World Cup hydration breaks, explained: What to know about FIFA's controversial pauses for 2026
World Cup hydration breaks, explained: What to know about FIFA's controversial pauses for 2026 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The World Cup is underway, and so are FIFA's hydration breaks. The new addition to the matches — and the broadcasts — is intended for the players and fans but isn't popular with fans, to say the least. Here's what you need to know about hydration breaks and why FIFA's new rule change has generated controversy.MORE:Breaking down the new World Cup rules for 2026World Cup hydration breaks rules changeFIFA implemented mandatory three-minute pauses during each half of World Cup matches, labeled "hydration breaks," for the 2026 tournament.According to FIFA, hydration breaks were implemented in anticipation of high temperatures throughout the World Cup, though not every host stadium is outdoors. The breaks extend to all 104 matches and occur 22 minutes into each half, though they can start slightly earlier in the event of an unrelated stoppage. This is the first time FIFA has made hydration breaks mandatory at the World Cup. In past tournaments, certain matches were subject to breaks depending on temperature or the referee's decision. When announcing the rule, FIFA said the impact of the heat during last year's Club World Cup in the United States was a factor. Hydration breaks are "part of a focused attempt to ensure the best possible conditions for players, drawing upon the experiences of previous tournaments, including the recent FIFA Club World Cup," FIFA said.MORE:See every team's World Cup rosterWhat are hydration breaks in soccer?Hydration breaks in the World Cup are three-minute pauses during each half to allow players to hydrate and avoid becoming overheated. While not every World Cup game will be played in an open-air stadium, the breaks were implemented across each match to ensure competitive balance across the board.During the three-minute pause, players can hydrate while TV networks are allowed to run commercials in a departure from the way World Cup matches have been presented in the past. When did hydration breaks start in soccer?Cooling breaks, at the discretion of the referee, were allowed during the World Cup in 2014 and 2022, as well as during the Euro 2020 tournament. Hydration breaks first started in earnest at the Club World Cup in 2025, but the 2026 World Cup is the first time FIFA has mandated a pause during the middle of a half. Rather than referees determining whether to pause the half, fans can expect each half to pause after about 22 minutes for players to hydrate regardless of the temperature or the venue.MORE:Fox catches early criticism for ignoring Shakira's opening ceremonyWhy FIFA hydration pauses are controversialFIFA's announcement earlier in 2026 that TV networks would be allowed to run commercials during hydration breaks gave away a major motivation behind the rule change, in the eyes of some fans. While player safety is undoubtedly a priority for all, some fans believe three-minute hydration breaks are a way for networks to sneak more ads into the broadcast. Fox took advantage in the World Cup's opening match, running commercials during the two hydration breaks and at one point missing some live action. Some believe the breaks simply break up the match in a way that isn't traditional to the sport, which is played with two 45-minute halves. With hydration breaks in the middle of each half, the cadence of a World Cup match might resemble the four-quarter setup of basketball or football in the United States.

Warriors predicted to land absolute star who many consider the next OG Anunoby
Warriors predicted to land absolute star who many consider the next OG Anunoby originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. With the NBA Draft approaching, it seems like there's a possibility that the Golden State Warriors can go in a few different directions. If the Warriors want to be smart, taking somebody in the first round who can make an immediate impact for them might be the top priority, though it's also fair to mention that trading the pick for win-now talent wouldn't be the worst idea, either. The unfortunate part for the Warriors is that bringing in a rookie with their current roster might not always be the wisest plan. The Warriors need to win right now, and often, aside from a few rookies each year, they aren't the top pieces on contending rosters. There could be one player who's in that mix, however, with Yaxel Lendeborg, the big man out of the University of Michigan, being floated as a potential option. One reporter recently predicted that he'd end up in Golden State, and it makes plenty of sense even if they decide to keep their current roster.“Lendeborg’s draft stock is one of the most difficult to figure out. He is going to be 24 before he plays an NBA game, and several of the teams in the lottery will be hunting for more upside. I’ve gotten the impression that there is potential for him to slip out of the lottery despite being among the most NBA-ready players in the draft."The Warriors are somewhere in that middle ground, and he could be useful in one final ride for Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler III and Draymond Green,” Sam Vecenie wrote. If the Warriors are looking for one last ride, moving Jimmy Butler would make the most sense. Even in that regard, it shouldn't be unlikely to see them go in a multitude of ways, which should and could include Lendeborg.More NBA news:Mavericks predicted to replace Kyrie IrvingLakers’ LeBron James reveals what will finally cause him to retireLakers’ LeBron James makes feelings clear on next contractSpurs’ De'Aaron Fox gets trade update during NBA FinalsMavericks’ Kyrie Irving update has a major impact on Cooper Flagg

Indonesian Messi superfan welcomes World Cup
54-year-old Indonesian fisherman Muhammad Yusuf is a superfan of the Argentina national team and Lionel Messi (Muhammad SALIM)On the balcony of his house in Indonesia, Muhammad Yusuf swayed to blaring music and waved a replica of the World Cup trophy as hundreds paraded past, many decked out in Argentina's colours. The 54-year-old fisherman from a small village in Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi, has been a superfan of the Argentine football team since the 1980s and adores superstar Lionel Messi. His two-storey wooden house is painted in the white and sky blue of the Albiceleste.Muhammad also painted the pebbles in his yard, the fence -- even his slippers."I've liked the Argentine team since the Maradona era, and now we have Messi," Muhammad told AFP of his football hero.Posters of Messi and the Argentine team jersey adorned every corner of his home a world away from South America.Outside his house, surrounded by poles flying the Argentine flag, festivities were underway ahead of the FIFA World Cup kickoff on Thursday.A large replica of the golden World Cup trophy boasted pride of place in the centre of Muhammad's front yard, attracting visitors from neighbouring villages.Muhammad's love for the World Cup-winning captain runs deep and is shared by his family. His three-year-old grandson is named Muhammad Messi. The boy was born on the day Argentina beat Mexico in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.That year, Muhammad went viral in Indonesia for walking six kilometres (3.7 miles) from his house to visit his newborn grandson in a neighbouring village -- which he had promised to do only if Argentina won football's top prize.Football-mad Indonesia participated in the World Cup just once, in 1938, when it was known as the Dutch East Indies, losing 6-0 in the final 16 to Hungary. The Southeast Asian country was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying race last year.Muhammad said he plans to watch every Argentina game in what is likely to be Messi's last World Cup. "I hope Messi can be a world champion again in 2026," he told AFP.str-dsa/hol/ane

Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho reach total agreement to sign Bernardo Silva on free transfer
Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho reach total agreement to sign Bernardo Silva on free transferBernardo Silva to Real Madrid confirmed with a here we goFormer Man City captain agrees two-year deal plus one-year optionMourinho pushed for the signing with the deal closed in 36 hoursBernardo Silva will join Real Madrid as a free agent this summer after his recent departure from Manchester City, as per reports. The 31-year-old brings the curtain down on a saga that had appeared destined to end at Barcelona for the best part of a year, with the Catalan club having reached an agreement in principle earlier this year and Silva understood to have accepted a substantial wage reduction to facilitate a move that he has wanted for years.Silva departed Manchester City last month after nine years at the Etihad Stadium, having lifted 20 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League en route to a historic treble in the 2022-23 season.Bernardo Silva discusses Barcelona transfer after agreeing Spain move in principleThe Portugal international had insisted last week that no final decision had been made on his next destination, naming Barcelona as one option among several.Report: Silva agrees two-year Real Madrid dealHowever, as reported by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Silva to Real Madrid is a done deal, with the former Manchester City captain agreeing a two-year contract plus the option of a further season at the Santiago Bernabeu. The speed of the agreement is remarkable, with Madrid’s pursuit having started just 36 hours before the deal was closed and an official proposal only emerging on Thursday as Los Blancos sought to hijack Barcelona’s pursuit of the midfielder.Real Madrid’s newly-appointed manager Jose Mourinho is understood to have personally driven the move, with the 63-year-old identifying his compatriot as a priority addition and Silva saying yes once the approach arrived. The development leaves Barcelona empty-handed after years of groundwork, with the Catalan club’s long-standing agreement in principle ultimately counting for nothing once Madrid moved with speed and conviction. What does Silva’s Madrid move mean for City fans?Silva’s decision closes the chapter on one of the great Manchester City careers, with supporters now set to watch their former captain in the white of Madrid rather than the colours of long-rumoured destination Barcelona.Manchester City confirm four-man released players list after 2025/26 seasonThe Portuguese described City as “my family” in his farewell on the final day of last season, calling Pep Guardiola his “father of football” in an emotional send-off at the Etihad Stadium.Mourinho’s role in the deal adds a layer of intrigue, with the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss having long admired Silva and now handing him a leading role in his rebuild in the Spanish capital.City, meanwhile, continue their own midfield restructuring in Silva’s absence, with the pursuit of Elliot Anderson central to director of football Hugo Viana‘s plans for filling the void the Portuguese leaves behind.

UFC Freedom 250 start time could change due to White House weather reports
Photo by Win McNamee/Getty ImagesUFC Freedom 250 is still scheduled to go ahead at the White House, but weather reports have made the start time worth watching closely. The event is planned for June 14 on the South Lawn, making it one of the strangest and most ambitious fight cards UFC has ever staged. That ambition is also the problem. Holding an outdoor combat-sports event on White House grounds means weather is not a small detail. It is part of the event’s risk profile.Photo by Ed Mulholland/Zuffa LLCUFC Freedom 250 start time depends on White House weatherNo official start-time change has been confirmed, but forecasts around Washington, D.C. have created real concern before UFC Freedom 250.The main card has been reported for Sunday night, with the event built around a temporary outdoor setup on the South Lawn. That leaves UFC exposed to rain, heat, humidity, wind, and lightning in a way a normal arena card is not.Rain alone may not force a change. Dana White has publicly taken the usual UFC stance that the show will go on, even if the weather is ugly.Lightning is different. If lightning moves into the area, officials would have to pause the event and wait for the danger to clear, which could push fights back and change the rhythm of the broadcast. That is why the start time could become flexible. UFC can prepare for rain, but it cannot safely stage live fights during active lightning near a high-security outdoor venue. The canvas is another issue. Heat and humidity can make fighters sweat more, while rain can affect footing and grip. In MMA, one slip can change a takedown, scramble, or finish.White House UFC card creates unusual logistics challengeUFC Freedom 250 is tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and is expected to be staged in front of an invitation-only crowd on White House grounds. That makes the event more than a normal fight night. Security, broadcast timing, guest movement, fighter access, and weather monitoring all have to work together. The outdoor setting also creates smaller but real problems, including bugs around bright lights and possible delays if storms affect equipment or crowd safety.UFC has handled difficult venues before, but this is a different kind of pressure. A White House card cannot operate like a standard arena show with a roof, fixed entrances, and controlled conditions. For now, the schedule remains in place. The bigger takeaway is that weather may decide how smooth the night feels.Read more:Arman Tsarukyan coach breaks silence on rumoured $1m UFC betting controversyNo trading card, no mercy: Steve Garcia vows revenge on Diego Lopes after Topps snubWeather update eases Dana White’s concerns for UFC White House event

🎥 Tequila, fiesta, faces in South Africa... day one’s funniest bits 😂
🎥 Tequila, fiesta, faces in South Africa... day one’s funniest bits 😂The World Cup is already underway. And beyond whatever happens on the pitch, the tournament always leaves behind images that get people talking. The opening day was no exception, and we already have moments that will make this World Cup something unique.Korean brother: you’re Mexican nowThe good relationship between Mexico and South Korea at World Cups was bound to give us some beautiful scenes. And we didn’t have to wait. Before the South Korea-Czechia match, Mexican fans in the Guadalajara fan zone spotted a South Korean supporter and knew exactly what to do: toss him in the air and applaud a country that is almost like a brother to Mexico. No tequila? No problemNothing goes to waste here. That’s what this group of South Korean fans must have thought before entering Akron. As expected, security wouldn’t allow a bottle of tequila into the stands. So what did they do? Down it went. Empty bottle, fans inside the stadium, and pure happiness. Time to enjoy.Tequila as fuel for workOne way or another, tequila was yesterday’s star beyond the playing fields. Just ask this Brazilian reporter. In the middle of a live hit, he was not only offered a shot of tequila, but they ended up putting a fake mustache on him too. Judging by the message he sent his mother, though, he didn’t seem to mind. Do you hear it? It’s silenceThere was no mood for a party in South Africa, though. The image Bafana Bafana showed in the opening match against Mexico was far from the best. And the proof was on the faces of several legends on local television. Benny McCarthy, Quinton Fortune... they were in no mood for smiles after conceding a 2-0 defeat.Haaland, at the hockeyYes, Norway are back at a football World Cup 28 years later. But there’s an even more popular sport in the Nordic countries: ice hockey. And with a World Championship being played in the United States at the same time as the NHL’s Stanley Cup, it would be a sin not to go in person. Just ask Erling Haaland, who was there for Game 5 of the finals. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇪🇸 here.

Raptors predicted to replace Immanuel Quickley with 20-year-old 22.0 PPG scorer
Raptors predicted to replace Immanuel Quickley with 20-year-old 22.0 PPG scorer originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Toronto Raptors had an impressive season, though it's still fair to mention that they're a bit away from where the New York Knicks have played throughout the past month and a half. The same can seemingly be said for most teams in the NBA, but Toronto will have to ensure it improves and does so in both the immediate and long-term future. In this upcoming draft, the Raptors will select 19th overall and have a strong chance to add a player who can make a major impact. One reporter recently predicted that they would do so in the form of Labaron Philon Jr., a guard out of the University of Alabama.“The Raptors are always difficult to get a gauge on this time of year. Under the Bobby Webster regime, they have done a nice job keeping things in-house on their feelings about prospects. One thing that I’ve gotten from a couple of teams is that they are still surveying the market for veteran, star-quality bigs. “But in terms of prospects, they tend to keep things hushed. Philon would give them another creator of offense, something they could use to take the next step into the second round of the playoffs. As long as his jumper holds up, he would be terrific next to both Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley,” Sam Vecenie wrote.Philon is one of the tougher players in the draft class to evaluate. He's shown he can be a dominant scorer with multiple ways of doing so, averaging 22.0 points at Alabama last season. He also shot 39.9% from three-point range on 6.2 attempts. Finishing the year with 50.1/39.9/79.8 shooting splits, there's a ton of talent to like from the young man.More NBA news:Warriors predicted to land the next OG AnunobyMavericks predicted to replace Kyrie IrvingLakers’ LeBron James reveals what will finally cause him to retireLakers’ LeBron James makes feelings clear on next contractSpurs’ De'Aaron Fox gets trade update during NBA Finals

'There's a World Cup happening?' Are Americans excited about tournament?
Will Americans catch World Cup fever? [AFP via Getty Images]There were wild celebrations throughout New York City, some fans standing on their cars on the streets of Manhattan, while thousands of miles away in Santa Monica roars could be heard from bars that lined the beach. But this wasn't for a World Cup game. This was for the New York Knicks as they staged a stunning comeback on Wednesday - the greatest in NBA Finals history - to beat the San Antonio Spurs. It served as a reminder of what global football's most prestigious tournament is up against in the USA as the country's national team prepares to kick off against Paraguay (Saturday, 02:00 BST).Football - or soccer - does not hold the same level of love as sports such as basketball and American football in the USA and a recent poll has suggested half of Americans surveyed do not care about the tournament. After a build-up dogged by political issues and expensive tickets, just how excited are people in the country about it?'I don't care about anything other than the Knicks'New York Knicks fans took over the city to celebrate their win against San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night [AFP via Getty Images]This is the second time the USA has hosted the men's World Cup, having done so in 1994.That tournament had a significant and lasting impact on the football culture in the country, boosting its popularity and paving the way for the creation of Major League Soccer. But fast forward more than three decades to the present day and the World Cup's return has yet to capture the public imagination. In New York, there is evidence if you look closely that this monster tournament has begun. There are subway trains decked out in national team colours. Lionel Messi's face appears on a giant billboard in Times Square and there are fans walking around the Big Apple in the shirts of Morocco and Brazil, who meet on Saturday in the first of eight World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium - rebranded New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament. But it is basketball - not football - that New Yorkers are besotted with right now.The New York Knicks lead in the NBA Finals 3-1 against San Antonio Spurs and will clinch the the national championship for the first time since 1973 if they win on Saturday."You've seen Batman, right? You've seen Gotham, right? Man, Saturday night is probably going to be like that if the Knicks win," one fan told BBC Sport."To be honest I haven't really kept up with anything about the World Cup. I don't care about anything other than the Knicks."Frank, another fan, added: "I've been concentrating on my Knicks but once it's over I will definitely turn my focus to the World Cup."It's just that the Knicks have taken over everything right now in New York."Another, wearing a royal blue and orange Knicks shirt, said: "I'm going to be honest. I don't know much about soccer."World Cup kicks off in Mexico with Shakira, dancing, and protests'Slow build that is leading to a frothy frenzy'Inter Miami and Argentina star Lionel Messi features in much of the World Cup promotion in the USA [AFP via Getty Images]Over in Los Angeles - where hosts USA will play two of their three group games - it has been a similar story with regards to promotion of the World Cup.There are banners on the streets coming out of Los Angeles Airport promoting 'LA26' and the tournament, while electronic billboards rotate the various members of the USA squad and a large mural in downtown LA features Argentina legend Lionel Messi. Some convenience stores also sell World Cup-related merchandise. However, for non-football fans, it would be quite easy to be oblivious to the fact that the tournament is about to get under way.One taxi driver transporting BBC World Service colleagues expressed their surprise that such an event was set to begin, saying "There's a World Cup happening? Who's playing?"But for organisers the expectation is the excitement will grow as the tournament goes on."I think we have had a slow build that is leading to a frothy frenzy," says Larry Freedman, co-chairman of the Los Angeles World Cup Host Committee. "It has been such a long time coming and with so many other sports and activities in LA people have been thinking about what they will do tomorrow, not two or three years out."But now we are on the eve of it kicking off people are getting very, very excited. We have a very diverse community here and people from all over the world who will have teams participating in this tournament."For the fans, there is certainly more excitement among them for being in the city where their country will play their games, even if they aren't necessarily die-hard football supporters. In Santa Monica, Isaiah and Husna - both from Sacramento County - were looking forward to experiencing the tournament."I'm pretty excited," Isaiah told BBC Sport."I've never actually watched the World Cup but I will watch it this year."I think it will be exciting because it is here in LA now and LA is where it is at. It will be something different."Husna added: "Many people don't know what the World Cup is here, but now it is in LA and this is a big popular place they will know about it and watch it."Both, however, admitted they were unaware of who the USA faced in their opening game. The younger generation of Americans BBC Sport spoke to - ones who did not experience the tournament when it was last held in the USA 32 years ago - certainly seemed to be excited. One such fan, Mahon, said: "We have watch parties set up so we are very excited for it."We do have a few friends who are not really into soccer but we are trying to get into them that we are Team USA - country pride."I think it has surpassed baseball in popularity here, but I don't think it will get as big as American football or basketball."People will get into it."'I don't think anyone knows a World Cup is on'Scotland return to the World Cup for the first time in 28 years and their fans have been arriving in Boston this week excited to witness their return to this level of football.Their first game is against Haiti (Sunday, 02:00 BST), but some of the Tartan Army have arrived to be greeted by Americans oblivious to why they are here."I went and posted a letter from America 10 minutes ago and the girl asked me what I was doing here and asked if I was on holiday," one Scotland fan told BBC Sport Scotland."I had a Scotland top. She didn't even know the World Cup is on."Another supporter added: "The pubs are brilliant but I don't think anyone knows that there is a World Cup on."Home fans priced out, but success could have lasting impactOne of the biggest issues for fans both native to the United States and from abroad has been ticket prices. In the days before the USA's opener, there were still tickets available for the game. But with the cheapest going for $1,120 (£836), many fans - particularly families - have been priced out.In downtown LA, family of four Chris, Angie, Layla and Lauren said they were thrilled to have World Cup football in their home area."We have two girls in club soccer so we are very much fans," said Chris."Unfortunately we will watch at home. The ticket prices and availability are a whole other subject.""If it was more affordable for families we would definitely go and check it out," says Brennan, who was with wife Erica and children Stephanie and Marcel."Despite that, we will still be excited and watch it from home."How well the USA national team do at this tournament will also play its role in building spectator interest - the longer they stay in it, the more the support is likely to build. That support has increased with the USA's opener approaching and earlier this week, the team held a 30-minute open training session for which 30,000 fans registered their interest for the 5,000 tickets available.Different methods have been employed to try to reach out to a different audience and recently USA international Malik Tillman featured on the cover of a fashion magazine wearing a hat that resembled an elongated mushroom."It's been sent around the group chat a few times ... there's some questionable pictures!" USA and Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards said.Fellow centre-back Mark McKenzie added: "Ultimately it's about exposure. I'm always up for expressing ourselves in different ways."If such methods work and a different audience is reached then that, coupled with a strong run by the USA at this World Cup, could have a lasting and changing impact on the sport in the country, as it did in 1994.USA '94: The World Cup that changed everythingWorld Cup kicks off in Mexico with Shakira, dancing, and protestsPlay BBC Sport's new World Cup predictor gameWhich World Cup team are you? US Open could be second-successive major to have new grand slam winner
Golf waited 25 years for another career grand slam winner but the US Open will be the second-successive major at which a new member has a chance to be inaugurated.Jordan Spieth’s shot at joining Rory McIlroy in the elite group of six golfers to have achieved the feat at last month’s US PGA Championship was an outside bet considering his form. But Scottie Scheffler stepping up at Shinnecock Hills seems far more likely. The world number one has the knack of bringing his best to the big events as his joint-14th at Aronimink last month was the first time he had not registered at least a top 10 in his last seven majors.Golf’s Mr Consistent has four top-seven US Open finishes in his last five outings at an event regarded as the toughest test in golf.In 12 tour starts this season he has only twice finished worse than 14th and even then he was still no lower than 24th.Those results, however, mask the fact Scheffler’s game is short of his best form and he knows he has some work to do before Thursday’s start. After finishing joint-12th at the Memorial Tournament, the American was asked what the issues were.“Just little things, little mistakes that I don’t typically make, I felt like I was making,” said Scheffler, who could become the third-fastest to the career grand slam behind the game’s two greatest players Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.“So a few things to clean up in the off week, but overall, I feel pretty comfortable with where my game’s at.”McIlroy also has some fine-tuning to do with his driving, which has been an issue all year even though he still managed to successfully defend his Masters title in April. The Northern Irishman has spent the week at his new Wentworth home but will fly back to the States on Saturday to ramp up preparations after a Shinnecock scouting trip last week.“My iron play was better, wedge play was good. Off the tee still wasn’t where I want it to be,” he said after his joint-12th finish at the Memorial.“Thankfully the fairways at Shinnecock are a little wider but I still need to work on that. I need to work on how I’m hitting it off the tee.”McIlroy’s major performances – two Masters victories and a couple of joint-seventh places – in his last six events point to him peaking at the right time as his six regular tour events have been underwhelming. But in terms of consistency, even he cannot match Adam Scott, who is set to feature in his 100th consecutive major. Nicklaus – 146 in a row – is the only other to reach three figures.“I would rather win some stuff, so let’s celebrate winning the US Open than just playing in it,” said the Australian.“I can give myself a pat on the back for hanging in there and playing all these events. I think there’s some luck in it.”Last year he was in the final group at Oakmont, having finished the third round one off the lead, but played his last 11 holes on a near-waterlogged course in seven over and wished he had lodged an objection.“I feel in the moment I was like, ‘I’m not going to be the guy complaining’, but looking back on it, of course, I think I should have,” said the mild-mannered 45-year-old.“Maybe not complain but spoken up after my shot at 11 (when hitting through casual water his wedge flew well over the green from where he made double bogey).”

Iowa State's Mercyline Kirwa orchestrates upset, wins NCAA 10k title
Coming into the day, the battle for the 10,000-meter national title was viewed as a two-woman race.Mercyline Kirwa, however, had other plans. The Iowa State freshman from Kenya unleashed a devastating kick with 200 to go and sprinted away from a pair of collegiate distance stars to claim her first NCAA title, winning in 31 minutes, 54.88 seconds June 11 at the outdoor track and field championships at Hayward Field."Today, I was like, 'I can run with them and maintain their pace,'" Kirwa said. "'If they go fast, I'll just follow them.'"Indeed, she did. Kirwa closed the race with a blistering final 400 split of 1:01.84.New Mexico sophomore Pamela Kosgei, the meet record-holder, was second in 31:56.49. Brigham Young University freshman Jane Hedengren, the collegiate record-holder, took third in 31:57.94. The stage was set Thursday for a highly anticipated showdown between Kosegi and Hedengren. Their back-and-forth battle during the 2026 outdoor season has been one of the sport's top storylines; Kosegi swept the 5K and 10K outdoor titles as a freshman in 2025.Hedengren has burst onto the scene this spring, setting collegiate records in both the 5K (14:50.5) and 10K (30:46.8). At the bell, Hedengren appeared to be moving comfortably as she stepped into the lead. But when Kosegi and Kirwa made their move at the 200 mark, Hedengren was not able to match them. "No, never," Hedengren said when asked if she made a deliberate decision to let Kosegi and Kirwa go. "I want to do the very best I can. You always fight to the finish; it would be a disservice to yourself not to make the most of the gift. Definitely tried to fight through that line; the opportunity that maybe I could get back to them and have a strong finish. I was definitely expecting a hard close."Amanda Moll reclaims collegiate pole vault recordThe back-and-forth battle between University of Washington pole vault stars Amanda Moll and Hana Moll generated another thrilling chapter this week.Over the past three years, the twin sisters from Olympia, Wash., have rewritten the collegiate record book. Between indoor and outdoor competitions, they own the 12 best marks in collegiate history. In their latest showdown, Amanda got some long-awaited bragging rights — and another collegiate record in the process.Amanda won the NCAA pole vault title with a personal-best mark of 15 feet, 10 1/2 inches. Hana took second (15-6 1/2).Coming into the meet, Hana had the all-time collegiate outdoor record after vaulting 15-10 on May 17.As is typically the case, the sisters were the last two competitors standing after the rest of the 24-woman field failed to clear 15-4 1/2. Now, both Amanda and Hana have their sights set on what could be a big summer. "We're in for (the July 3-4 Prefontaine Classic at Hayward)," Hana said. "I think that will be a really good meet to try to jump those really high bars that we've been wanting to all season, just the way the competition is structured. ... We're looking at other Diamond Leagues in Europe, if we're still feeling like we have energy at the end of the season. We'll see."Georgia's Adaejah Hodge shatters NCAA 100 recordFor the second day in a row, a major college record fell at Hayward. During the first heat of the 100 prelims, Georgia freshman Adaejah Hodge smashed the NCAA record with a personal-best time of 10.63. She also anchored her team to a fourth-place preliminary finish in the 4x100 (42.44). Individual title winners from NCAA track and field championshipsTexas State junior Elisabet Rut Runarsdottir claimed her second NCAA national title in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 240-1. Her winning throw of 65-4 1/4 was well ahead of USC's Ashley Erasmus, who took second (59-6 1/4). Johansson won the 2023 NCAA outdoor shot put title and also claimed indoor titles in 2025 and 2026. Penalty trouble pushes Golden Knights to brink of elimination
Jun 11, 2026; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart (79) and right wing Mark Stone (61) react after losing game five of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes at Lenovo Center.Unfortunately for the Vegas Golden Knights, the Carolina Hurricanes would be the first team to figure out how to control a game in a wild Stanley Cup Final. On Thursday, the situation turned dire for the Golden Knights, who find themselves one game away from elimination after a 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes in Game Five.Game Five started out on a positive enough note for the Golden Knights. After forcing a delay of game penalty, two players Vegas desperately needed to get going did, as Jack Eichel would find Pavel Dorofeyev on the power play to get the Golden Knights out in front on their first shot of the game. From there, however, the Hurricanes would take over, as Jordan Staal would redirect the puck past Carter Hart for his sixth goal in five Stanley Cup Final games to level the game before the end of the first period.Despite the Golden Knights controlling play for a good chunk of the second period, it would be the Hurricanes getting out ahead. First, Andrei Svechnikov would make Vegas pay for penalty trouble with a power play shot of his own that beat Hart through the five hole. Just under six minutes later, Sebastian Aho would collect a pass from Sean Walker from his skate blade to his stick and roofed the puck over Hart to put Vegas down two.To make matters worse, William Karlsson would take a forearm injury behind the net, causing him to exit the game for a large chunk of the second period. He would not return for the remainder of the game and, according to head coach John Tortorella, may be out for the remainder of the series. The third would see the Golden Knights continue to pay for their lack of discipline. A double minor caused by Mark Stone would lead to Svechnikov effectively icing the game with his second power play goal of the game, pushing the Hurricanes to four goals for the fifth time in the series.Dorofeyev would keep the game interesting with his second goal of the contest, but it would be as close as the Golden Knights would get as the Hurricanes took their first lead of the series.Game Six at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday now gives the Golden Knights only two options: force a return to Raleigh for Game Seven, or watch the Hurricanes carry the Stanley Cup on their home ice.

Phillies predicted to move on from $98 million bust for CBA reason
Phillies predicted to move on from $98 million bust for CBA reason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.A few years ago, Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola was regarded as one of the more above-average starters in Major League Baseball. The veteran has been in the league for more than a decade, debuting with Philadelphia and staying with the team for all 11 years of his career.Unfortunately for the 33-year-old and the Phillies, he's struggled a bunch over the past two seasons. Nola posted a 6.01 ERA last year and currently has a 5.86 ERA. His strikeout numbers have also been down compared to years past, suggesting he's lost some ability to get outs at the highest level. Now, moving on from him probably won't be very easy, but if the new CBA comes intact, and it's what the owners want, which would require some teams to cut salary, he could be the perfect option to do it with. He's currently viewed as the most likely player to be moved on from because his contract still has four years and $98 million remaining.“Remaining contract: 4 years, ~$98 million"The Philadelphia Phillies are sort of stuck where they are team-wise for a while, especially if a salary cap is implemented, because of all the long-term contracts they have. Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo, J.T. Realmuto and Cristopher Sanchez are all making at least $15 million annually through 2028, and Zack Wheeler is set to earn $42 million in 2027. The player the Phillies would be most willing to move among that group is probably Nola,” Zachary Rotman wrote. It's always tough moving on from a guy who has definitely done a lot for an organization, though the time is probably right to trade him if possible. That's not to say Nola can't figure things out in a different uniform or eventually turn things around in Philadelphia, but the better plan would be to move on from him if the league requires it.More MLB news:Blue Jays predicted to cut ties with fan favoriteMets predicted to trade disgruntled youngsterBlue Jays top trade asset isn’t who you think it isBlue Jays told to avoid ‘nightmare’ tradeBlue Jays top trade target now being viewed as ‘nightmare’ option

'Can't question Bangladesh's ODI series win over Australia on good wickets' - Has Taskin Ahmed taken a dig at Pakistani pitches?
'Can't question Bangladesh's ODI series win over Australia on good wickets' - Has Taskin Ahmed taken a dig at Pakistani pitches? originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Key Takeaways:Bangladesh claimed their first-ever ODI series win against Australia.Taskin Ahmed dismissed critics who link Bangladesh's wins to poor pitches.Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin's pace duo wrecked Australia's top order early.Taskin Ahmed's subtle dig at Pakistan: Bangladesh beat Australia on a "Good wicket, not a paddy field"Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed took a subtle dig at Pakistan as he insisted that the Bangla Tigers sealed their first ODI series win over Australia on "good wickets" and not a "paddy field". The Aussies had visited Pakistan earlier in May, where they were greeted with slow-turning pitches. Josh Inglis and Co. fought hard but were beaten 2-1 by the Men in Green as the visitors struggled to find their feet on dust bowls. At the same time, Bangladesh's wins on home soil have repeatedly been dismissed because of their reputation for preparing slow, low, turning tracks in Dhaka. Critics have pointed to those surfaces whenever they beat heavyweights like Australia, England or New Zealand, often suggesting the conditions did more than the players.MORE: Have Bangladesh ever beaten Australia in ODI cricket? Full AUS vs BAN ODI head-to-head record listedTaskin tore apart that narrative and also took a sly dig at Pakistan, claiming that the victories were earned not on doctored surfaces, but on sporting wickets. “It’s a wonderful feeling … we aren't playing on bad wickets anymore. It's not like we are playing in a paddy field. We are playing on good wickets and winning against a good team. So, it's a great achievement,” Taskin said at the press conference.Bangladesh's lethal pace battery makes them dream about 2027 World CupUnlike the 2021 T20I series against Australia, where Bangladesh allegedly won on half-baked surfaces, the Mirpur wicket for this ODI series had genuine pace, carry and assistance for the fast bowlers. Bangladesh chose to back their seamers, and that decision paid off handsomely.Taskin and Mustafizur Rahman tore into Australia at the start, as the Aussies were reduced to 0/3 in two overs, with the latter dismissing Cooper Connolly and Matt Renshaw. “Fizz is always a chill guy. Experience matters a lot, and you can see that in his bowling. After playing for so many years, when the team needs him with the new ball, he tries his best,” Taskin said about Mustafizur.MORE: Australian cricket in crisis? Reigning world champions' dismal ODI form continues“He could probably do well whenever he wants, but if he bowls with the new ball more, he might get called for Tests!”Beyond the series win, Taskin spoke about Bangladesh's larger ambitions to flourish in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. “As a team, we’ve been gradually growing over the last year or so. We’re improving by playing on better wickets and in better conditions because our goal is only one thing: to perform well in major tournaments," he said.“In Australia or South Africa, wherever we play, there will definitely be extra bounce. The more we play on good wickets like these, the easier it will be to adapt. I’m sure it will help us in the future."MORE: 'Mouth-watering prospect': Ian Bishop predicts bright SENA future for Nahid RanaWhat next for Bangladesh cricket team?Bangladesh will be back in action for the third ODI match against Australia on June 14. Another big midfield move may be on the cards for Manchester City but is it the right one?
Another big midfield move may be on the cards for Manchester City but is it the right one?Although Manchester City have seen a second bid rejected for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson it is expected that Anderson will sign for City this summer. Tom Collomosse has reported for the Daily Mail that it is expected that Anderson will sign for City at some point this month. If, or when, City complete the signing of Anderson, that will be one hole in City’s midfield filled. It has now been reported that Manchester City could also be set to move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Tonali is a fine player and a proven performer in the Premier League. But is he a fit for what City need? That may be a question to investigate, especially considering Tonali wouldn’t come cheap.Manchester City appreciate Sandro Tonali reports Fabrizio Romano.Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano commented earlier this week on Manchester City’s interest in signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. Romano also touched on City’s bid to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. He explained: “Manchester City yesterday offered £121m add-ons included, for Elliot Anderson – £106m plus £15m as add-ons.”“The bid has been rejected by Nottingham Forest. Forest want guaranteed money and for Anderson to officially become the most expensive midfielder in the history of the Premier League, more than Declan Rice, and more than [Moises] Caicedo.”“Now let’s see what Manchester City decide to do because it was already a big proposal. Don’t forget what I told you last week, another player really appreciated, really, really appreciated by Manchester City is also Sandro Tonali.”“Man City have several options in midfield. On Tonali, there is interest from other clubs in England, including Arsenal. But for sure it’s going to be an interesting couple of days and weeks around midfielders because Man Utd are working on their deals.”Is Sandro Tonali the midfielder that City need this summer?Working on the assumption that Manchester City do sign Elliot Anderson, City’s midfield would have a completely different look. Alongside Anderson, City would have Rodri, Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders in their ranks. Also, Nico O’Reilly could move into midfield next season. Plus, there are also Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden to factor into the equation. Now, if one or both of Nico and Tijjani Reijnders leave City, that would change what type of midfielder City needs. But is Tonali the right fit?Sandro Tonali can play across midfield in a variety of roles. Particularly as a number six or an eight. He ticks that particular box that City crave in players, especially midfielders. In terms of passing, Tonali can play a quality cross-field ball and also keeps the ball moving quickly with one- and two-touch passes. Tonali is press-resistant to a degree. Sandro Tonali’s ball-carrying ability is also exceptional, so in possession, Tonali does seem like a midfielder Manchester City needs. However, as much as Tonali can keep the ball moving quickly which is a strength of Newcastle’s game under Eddie Howe, Manchester City are a possession heavy side. They were under Pep Guardiola. With Enzo Maresca expected to be Guardiola’s replacement, that won’t change at City. Does Tonali fit Maresca’s style of play in possession? Maybe not. Outside of possession, Tonali reads the game well, but isn’t strong in a challenge. Does that fit what City need? Perhaps it does if Tonali were to start alongside Rodri or Elliot Anderson. Perhaps Tonali couldn’t be a lonely number six in a City side. That seems to a query around his fit into a Manchester City team. The other factor is the cost. Newcastle United will not sell Sandro Tonali cheaply. Lee Ryder has reported for Chronicle Live that Newcastle will demand £100 million for Tonali. Would Manchester City spend up to £230 million on two midfielders? Perhaps not. Maybe if they sell Nico Gonzalez or Tijjani Reijnders, or both, that may be an option. That side of the equation may have to play out first. But on closer inspection it is hard to see City spending so much on two midfielders.Final thoughts.Sandro Tonali continues to be named as a potential summer transfer target for Manchester City. There are parts of Tonali’s game that would slot into a City side. However, there are aspects of Tonali’s play that may not be suited to a role in an Enzo Maresca team. Summer departures may shape Manchester City’s chase to sign Sandro Tonali, as will Newcastle’s reported transfer fee. But as good as Tonali is, you do wonder if there is another midfielder out there, aside from Elliot Anderson, that Manchester City could target this summer who may be a better fit for their midfield.

🗞️ Between the World Cup and Bernardo Silva, Friday's front pages
🗞️ Between the World Cup and Bernardo Silva, Friday's front pagesA detailed analysis of the front pages reveals a fascinating split in coverage on this Friday, June 12, 2026. While the Barcelona-based press bursts with color in celebration of the start of the World Cup, the Madrid papers prefer to devote their opening headlines to a genuine earthquake in the Real Madrid offices.🇲🇽 Way to go! Mexico strikes first and sparks madnessThe opening of the World Cup spectacularly dominates the front pages of the Catalan press. Mundo Deportivo leads with a bold, emphatic "WAY TO GO!" over a large image of the replica World Cup trophy at the center of the pitch at the Azteca Stadium. Meanwhile, Sport follows the same path with the headline "LONG LIVE THE WORLD CUP!" over a green and yellow background, highlighting Mexico’s overwhelming superiority and the event’s cultural impact. Both outlets agree in praising a vibrant, colorful opening ceremony that turned into a celebration of global music, with Shakira, Maná, and actress Salma Hayek elevated as the main stars of the welcome. ⚪ Madrid’s counterattack: Bernardo Silva and Mourinho steal the spotlightCrossing the air bridge, the perspective changes completely. Although Mexico’s victory appears timidly in the top straps of MARCA and AS, the absolute focus of their front pages is single-themed and tinted white. "Bernardo Silva, imminent," headline both Madrid dailies in unison, illustrating their covers with the talented Portuguese footballer from Manchester City. According to the information revealed, Real Madrid has beaten FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid to the punch and is on the verge of completing the midfielder’s signing on a free transfer after he rejected a renewal or other offers. The Portuguese player’s arrival is described as an explicit request from José Mourinho, whose return to the Real Madrid bench until 2029 was officially confirmed just yesterday. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Mexico defeats South Africa in the 2026 World Cup’s opening match
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - JUNE 11: Raul Jimenez #9 of Mexico celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A match between Mexico and South Africa at Mexico City Stadium on June 11, 2026 in Mexico City, Mexico. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images) | Getty Images Mexico finally won a World Cup opening match as they defeated South Africa by a 2-0 score. After 7 tries, Mexico finally got the victory in a lively but accident ridden opening match. Mexico was the better team from the start and dominated the game but should have done better in the score and the game was a good but not great performance from the home side. Mexico will now travel to Guadalajara, where for the first time ever they will play a group stage match outside Estadio Azteca when they face South Korea. The 1st half started with Mexico coming out with no surprises, the only change from their last friendly being Israel Reyes getting the start over Jorge Sanchez. A cross into the area would find Raul Jimenez, who got off a great left footed shot but South Africa’s goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams made a great save. After Erik Lira would win a ball outside the area, Julian Quiñones got to the ball, got into the area and got off a right footed shot past the legs of Williams and into the net to score and give Mexico the early 1-0 lead. For the first time in history, Mexico had scored the first goal in a World Cup. From outside the area, Quiñones got off a right footed shot that went just wide. A longball was badly handled by Mexico’s goalkeeper, Raul Rangel, but the ball would eventually be cleared off by Mexico’s defense. After getting into the area, Jesus Gallardo got off a low cross that forced Williams to make a save before it could get to two Mexican attackers. A cross into the area from Alvaro Fidalgo was just missed by Jimenez but it bounced all the way thru and forced Williams to make a save. After a great combination between Brian Gutierrrez, Jimenez and Quiñones, the latter would get off a right footed shot past Williams but it would hit the post. Mbekezeli Mbokazi would get off a left footed shot from way outside the area but it was easily saved by Rangel. After getting a great pass from Quiñones, Gutierrez had a great chance but his right footed shot would go wide in a wasted chance. The halftime whistle blew with Mexico dominating but only having a one goal lead to show for it. The 2nd half started with neither team making a substitution. A mistaken pass by Williams would gift the ball to Fidalgo but he failed to take a shot and instead got off a pass that was blocked. The ball eventually fell to Gutierrez, who got off a right footed shot from outside the area but it went wide. From way outside the area Quiñones tried to lob the shot into the net but Williams easily saved it. A thru pass allowed Gutierrez to go on a 1 vs 1 but he was brought down by Yaya Sithole. As he was the last man, he would get a red card which left South Africa with 10 players. Aubrey Modiba got off a left footed shot from outside the area that Rangel would easily handle. South Africa subbed out Lyle Foster for Thalente Mbatha. While Mexico continued to dominate, they weren’t as fluid as they were in the 1st half. South Africa subbed out Jayden Adams for Themba Zwane. Mexico subbed out Brian Gutierrez and Alvaro Fidalgo for Luis Chavez and Gilberto Mora. Mora broke the record for the youngest ever Mexican to play in a World Cup. Roberto Alvarado would get off a great cross into the area where Raul Jimenez would get to it and head the ball past Williams and into the net to score and give Mexico the 2-0 lead. It was a very emotional moment for Jimenez, who not only survived a life threatening injury but had lost his father earlier in the year. Mexico subbed out Erik Lira and Raul Jimenez for Edson Alvarez and Armando Gonzalez. South Africa subbed out Aubrey Modiba and Iqraam Rayners for Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa. Mexico subbed out Julian Quiñones for Alexis Vega. After Alvarado got slapped in the area, the referee would go to VAR and decide to give a red card to Themba Zwane. Down to 9 players, South Africa completely sat back but Mexico kept being conservative going forward. Off a counter by South Africa, Cesar Montes would bring down Khuliso Mudau and incredibly the referee judged him to be the last man and gave him a red card. In a match that Mexico had completely dominated, Montes would get a red card that will make him miss the match against South Korea. The match would end and Mexico would get their victory to start the 2026 World Cup.Mexico started their World Cup on the right track although the feeling was left that it could have been better. Mexico won a World Cup opening match for the first time in their history. Previously Mexico had lost their first five times they opened the World Cup until the streak came to an end in the 1970 World Cup, where they tied the opening match against the USSR by a 0-0 score. While Mexico won their opening match in the 1986 World Cup against Belgium, it was during the time frame where the defending champion played in the opening game, not the host (The opening match was a 1-1 tie between Italy and Bulgaria). Mexico would only play the opening match in 2010, where they tied against South Africa by a 1-1 score. In an historic game today, as it was the first time in history that an opening matchup was repeated, Mexico would defeat South Africa. While the win is a great result on paper, the fact that South Africa went down to 9 players and Mexico could only win by two goals will sour people. What really soured the match for Mexico though was the red card to Cesar Montes, who will now miss a key match against South Korea. South Korea now looks as the toughest opponent for Mexico after they defeated Czechia by a 2-1 score in their opener late Thursday. Mexico will need to improve and a couple of key players should also get the nervousness off themself, which seemed to be a key cause for the lackluster performances of various players. Mexico will need to improve to make it better but at least they were able to get the victory and climb to first place in the group, hoping they can improve and not have a step back.

Lakers’ LeBron James sends NSFW message to Bronny James haters
Lakers’ LeBron James sends NSFW message to Bronny James haters originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Los Angeles Lakers free agent and future Hall of Famer LeBron James, arguably the greatest player of all time, definitely has a lot of pull around the NBA. All James has done throughout his career is prove why he might go down as the GOAT, though some have criticized him for many things. Perhaps the biggest of that bunch was when his son, Bronny James, was drafted in the second round by the Lakers. I understand why some were upset about that, but I also think it's important to look at what Bronny has done as a professional and say he's not as bad as some like to make him out to be.He's showing some signs on the defensive side of the basketball, and there's actually a bit to be excited about.LeBron has been asked about it a lot, and he typically keeps his feelings rather quiet. However, when recently speaking, he made it clear that he doesn't want to hear anything thrown at his family that's disrespectful, though he also knows that he's heard it plenty of times.“The kid has earned his right to be a professional athlete. The thing you’re not going to do is throw stones at us as a family. I’m not letting that s**t slide, because I know what I’ve created because of what I didn’t have. So, if you want to talk about the kid, that he shouldn’t be an NBA player, I don’t care about that. As long as you don’t get to the fatherhood piece. I don’t play those games,” James said, per Yahoo.Unfortunately for LeBron and Bronny, this is just the nature of fandom nowadays. Fans have a lot to say about things they might not know everything about, which causes a lot of hate on social media and other platforms. That's sadly something Bronny has to deal with, and he just needs to put it aside and keep playing basketball the way he has.More NBA news:Lakers predicted to finally add elite wing around Luka DoncicKnicks predicted to replace struggling Mitchell RobinsonRaptors predicted to replace Immanuel QuickleyWarriors predicted to land the next OG AnunobyMavericks predicted to replace Kyrie Irving

Browns’ Deshaun Watson responds to boos Cleveland fans have given him with perfect response
Browns’ Deshaun Watson responds to boos Cleveland fans have given him with perfect response originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Deshaun Watson has dealt with a lot of adversity during his time with the Cleveland Browns, some of it self-inflicted, but it's also important to recognize that for the Browns to be a better team, they probably need the veteran quarterback to be the guy they were expecting when they made a blockbuster trade for him and gave him all the money he was looking for. Watson hasn't been that, and as a result, has dealt with a lot of boos throughout his time with the organization. The last time those boos happened was actually when Browns fans saw him tear his Achilles, and instead of clapping for him and trying to support their quarterback, they booed him. When speaking about the backlash he's taken from the fan base, Watson gave a genuine response to the question, saying he can't control what others do and is focused on himself and the team.“At the end of the day, I can’t control what people support. I think that’s their own opinions. I think that all I can do is just put out the best person I am, showcase who I am as a person, as a player, as a teammate, and what I represent as an individual. So outside of that, I can’t focus on what the outside is saying or what they — I have no control over that other than just putting out the best product that I can put out as a person and as a player,” Watson said, per the team.In Watson's defense, it has to be tough to hear boos all the time, even if some of them are warranted for his play.Hopefully, some of the boos can be left behind if he starts playing better, though I understand fans' skepticism about that, given what we've seen over the past few years.More NFL news:Deshaun Watson quieted all doubt about him and Shedeur Sanders relationshipShedeur Sanders given vote of confidence from Browns decision makerJJ McCarthy makes feelings clear on whether he wants to play with VikingsBrandon Aiyuk just sent a crazy message to the 49ers49ers believed to have canceled mini camp for Brandon Aiyuk reason

Trump is raising expectations that this time he really will close deal with Iran to wind down war
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick speaks before President Donald Trump, in foreground, signs a proclamation about the fishing industry, in the Oval Office of the White House, Thursday, June 11, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)2026-06-12T04:05:16Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has long been looking for this weekend to be a big one for his presidency. The World Cup returns to the U.S. on Friday for the first time in 32 years after Trump threw himself into winning the bid to co-host the soccer tourney during his first term. He’ll be feted Sunday, his 80th birthday, during a UFC fight night that’s expected to draw thousands to the White House grounds. Hours after the final bout, he’s scheduled to jet off to the G7 summit in the French Alps for talks with several world leaders he’s been beefing with over war and tariffs. But Trump set expectations even higher for the coming days when he announced Thursday that the U.S. and Iran could come to terms this weekend on an agreement that would set the pathway to end the three-month-old war that’s been broadly unpopular with Americans and has rattled global oil markets. He said he plans to dispatch Vice President JD Vance to the signing of the agreement. Trump has said on several occasions in recent weeks that he’s on the cusp of a deal without anything coming to fruition. A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry told state television following Trump’s comments that mediators were active but nothing had been finalized to end the conflict. Still, Trump is claiming this time might be different. The breakthrough comes after he threatened to escalate the conflict with more intense bombardment of Iran and by seizing control of Iran’s oil industry, including capturing Iran’s vital Kharg Island oil facility. The president’s threats followed back-and-forth strikes this week that had rendered a temporary ceasefire agreed to in early April all but meaningless. Read More “They’ve taken a pounding like very few people could take,” Trump said in an Oval Office exchange with reporters as he explained why he was confident that, this time, a deal would come through. “And they want to make the deal a lot more than I do.” Trump offered scant details about the settlement he says is taking shape, but told reporters that he believed the Iranian supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who is believed to have been wounded on the first day of the war and has not been seen in public since, is ready to sign off on the deal.Trump is billing the deal as “very strong,” though he says it remains “a little conceptual,” and says it would ensure Iran is blocked from ever developing a nuclear weapon. Trump’s heightened threats are aimed at creating an off-rampWith the conflict intensifying over the past week, Trump’s threat to escalate U.S. military action seemed in part aimed at demonstrating to the hawkish flank of his political base that he was willing to play “hardball” with the Iranians if they didn’t come to a deal soon, said Ali Vaez, Iran director at the International Crisis Group. Trump in March warned he would target Iran’s infrastructure and put American troops on Kharg Island before he ultimately backed down, and the two countries agreed to the temporary ceasefire.Almost immediately after raising the idea again on social media Thursday, Trump appeared to back away. He called into a morning show on Fox News Channel and questioned whether Americans had the “stomach” for an option that would require putting U.S. troops in harm’s way. Hours later, Trump announced he had decided to cancel orders for “very hard” strikes on Iran and said a deal was close. Vaez said even as Trump was posting on social media Thursday about escalating strikes, mediators from Pakistan, Turkey and Qatar had been making progress in their talks with Iran.At the same time, Iran also may have reset the equation for Trump with its decision last weekend to attack Israel directly for the first time since the ceasefire after Israeli forces carried out military strikes on Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. With the move, Iran signaled that Israel could no longer bomb Lebanon without facing a meaningful reaction and in the process also raised the cost for the U.S. to follow through on its commitment to help safeguard Israel.“It really does appear to me that Trump wants to bring this to an end, but his real challenge is that he’s looking for a victory lap and an exit ramp and those two things are not necessarily compatible,” Vaez said. Trump expresses frustration with war narrativeTrump has been boasting since the early weeks of the conflict that he’d already won the war — much of the Islamic Republic’s leadership has been killed in the bombings and the Iranian navy and air force have been severely degraded. But Iran continues to effectively keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, choking a waterway through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply passed before the war, and has yet to agree to restart negotiations with the U.S. over its concerns about Iran’s nuclear program, the main reason Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave to justify launching the war. But the real problem, Trump grumbled Thursday, was largely a public relations issue. “They could wave the white flag of surrender. They could say: ‘We surrender, we surrender, we’re finished, we’ve had it. The United States is the greatest power, praise be to Allah,’” Trump said on Fox News. “They could say it loud and clear. And the fake news would say it was a great victory for Iran.”Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, a former chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Trump has grown impatient with Iran and the renewed strikes and threats on Kharg Island and Iran’s energy sector were intended to get the negotiations back to the “right place.”Polls show that the conflict is largely unpopular with Americans. McCaul said he believes the Iranians want to “try to drag this out as long as they can,” closer to the midterm elections in November, because they see that as being to their benefit.War will be high on agenda at next week’s G7Deal or no deal, the war will loom large during next week’s talks at the Group of Seven summit in bucolic Évian-les-Bains, France. Trump has frequently criticized some of the group leaders — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz — for resisting his calls to aid the U.S. and Israeli war effort. The four leaders have also angered Trump by criticizing how he’s gone about executing the war and his lack of consultation with allies before jumping into a conflict that’s hurt the global economy as oil prices have surged. But Trump said he is optimistic he could have an agreement before his talks with leaders in France.“The strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon — maybe over the weekend in Europe,” Trump said. Ukraine hits fuel supplies to Crimea, sparking a fuel crisis on the Russian-held peninsula

Tanker trucks attacked and left ablaze along the land corridor from Russia to Crimea. Motorists waiting in long lines at gas stations. In a new blow to the Kremlin’s narrative that Moscow is winning the 4-year-old war in Ukraine, Kyiv’s forces have targeted supplies to Crimea, triggering the worst fuel crisis on the Black Sea peninsula since it was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.The persistent attacks reflect the growing intensity and efficiency of Ukraine’s drone strikes and have caught Russia off-guard and struggling for a response. As the country marks the Russia Day national holiday on Friday, signaling the start of summer vacations, the gas shortages are threatening to cause further disruptions to the tourism-dependent region with its beaches and resorts. In a rare public acknowledgment, the Kremlin has recognized the scope of the problem and promised to address the issue quickly. Ukraine’s successes have highlighted its ability to inflict painful damage to Russia and change the course of the conflict while Moscow’s advances recently have ground to a near halt. On Thursday, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine reached its 1,569th day, surpassing the duration of World War I. Crimea’s importance to RussiaCrimea has been a jewel in Russia’s imperial crown since it was seized from Turkic-speaking Tatars in the 18th century after Moscow defeated the Ottoman Empire.Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea from Russia to Ukraine in 1954 when both republics were part of the USSR. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the diamond-shaped peninsula became part of newly independent Ukraine.Russia kept a naval base in Sevastopol, and when a Moscow-friendly Ukrainian president was ousted by a popular uprising in February 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent in troops to overtake Crimea. Weeks later, Moscow annexed the peninsula following a referendum that most of the world refuses to recognize. Read More Soon afterward, a Moscow-backed separatist insurgency erupted in eastern Ukraine, and fighting there raged with varying intensity until the February 2022 invasion. Russian troops concentrated in Crimea quickly seized large parts of southern Ukraine early in the war and secured the land route to the peninsula. Since early in the war, Ukraine has fired missiles and drones to try to dislodge Moscow’s hold on the territory. The Ukrainian military sank several Russian warships in the Black Sea and at their Crimean bases, crippling Moscow’s naval capability and forcing it to redeploy its fleet to Novorossiysk. Ukraine also methodically targeted munitions depots, airfields and Putin’s prized asset, the Kerch Bridge linking Crimea to Russia. The span was struck by a truck bomb in October 2022 that killed five people, blew up two sections of the bridge and required months of repairs. More attacks on the bridge followed in 2023 and 2025. Ukraine’s attacks on the land corridor to CrimeaSine the Kerch Bridge attacks, Russia has channeled most fuel and other supplies along the highway and railroad via the occupied territories along the Sea of Azov coast. Those shipments were interrupted last month, when Ukrainian drones hit fuel trucks on the highway that Moscow once deemed to be safe, leaving behind dozens of burning vehicles.Other relentless Ukrainian strikes hit refineries, oil depots and pipelines deep inside Russia, hurting its oil exports and causing domestic fuel shortages. The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War noted the synergy between the longer-range attacks and those disrupting supplies to Crimea and other occupied regions.“The long-range strike campaign is therefore reducing Russia’s production capacity, while the midrange strike campaign is hurting Russia’s ability to transport the gasoline Russia is still able to produce,” it said in an analysis.Making maters worse, Ukrainian drones this week repeatedly hit the Chonhar Bridge, which links mainland Ukraine and Crimea over a shallow strait. Authorities deployed pontoon bridges. The Ukrainian military said it struck the bridge to disrupt movement of troops, ammunition and fuel from Crimea. Queues and gas rationingIt’s not immediately clear how the fuel disruptions will affect Russian military operations, but residents of Crimea and other occupied territories are keenly feeling the blow. The peninsula has had periodic fuel shortages from Ukrainian strikes before, but this crisis is the worst since its 2014 annexation. At the end of May, authorities restricted the sale of gasoline to 20 liters (5 1/3 gallons) per vehicle owner per week using prepaid coupons. Those were snapped up immediately following their release on an official messaging app channel, and motorists lined up for hours, waiting to refuel.Social networks have been abuzz with requests and advice on where to find fuel, and authorities launched a hotline for tourists who have found themselves trapped. While fuel shipments over the Kerch Bridge long has been suspended for security reasons since the Ukrainian attacks, fuel also has been carried by ferries. Those shipments are expected to increase. Some motorists bring their own gas over the bridge from the mainland, but they are restricted to carrying 100 liters (about 26 1/2 gallons) per vehicle. Some speculators are selling gas at double the market price.Crimea attracted nearly 7 million tourists last year, and it had hoped to top that number this year. The business daily Kommersant reported that nearly 80% of hotel bookings were canceled in late May and early June. Some hotels offered gasoline as a bonus for new bookings, offers that were quickly snapped up.Some travelers were unsettled by a Ukrainian drone attack earlier this week on a passenger train traveling from Moscow to Crimea, injuring its driver and killing his assistant. That led to a brief suspension of service, with passengers taken by buses. An earlier attack on a commuter train in Crimea killed one person and injured three others, forcing authorities to shift schedules to limit service during daytime hours.Kremlin pledges actionKremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the Crimean fuel shortages earlier this week and promised that “measures were being taken” to deal with them. The Russian Defense Ministry has been silent about the Ukrainian attacks on the land corridor, while some war bloggers have harshly criticized the military for failing to anticipate the strikes and its slow response. Some suggested military escorts for fuel trucks while others urged stepping up strikes on Ukrainian bridges, fuel storage sites and other infrastructure.Amid the fuel crisis and the finger-pointing, Ukraine dealt another symbolic blow to Russia, striking a historic Sevastopol building that houses a huge panoramic painting that depicts the defense of the city during the 19th century Crimean War. The painting was effectively destroyed by fire during the attack, according to Mikhail Razvozhayev,, the Kremlin-appointed head of Crimea’s largest city.Given Putin’s focus on Crimea, military blogger Valery Shiryayev said, the attack would certainly anger the Russian leader.“It’s hard to find another work of art, another part of national heritage, whose destruction would be as painful for Putin,” he said.

From white knuckles to open barbs, Trump and Macron bring a rocky history to the G7 summit
President Donald Trump shakes hands with French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting at the U.S. Embassy, May 25, 2017, in Brussels. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, file)2026-06-12T04:06:52Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron started simply enough, with a handshake, nearly a decade ago. But even then, there were signs of strain in their relationship — tensions that could be on full display during next week’s G7 summit in France.Back in 2017, Trump was a brash businessman just elected to America’s most powerful office, and Macron was an upstart politician who had won his race in a landslide. At a NATO summit in Brussels, they clinched hands far longer than most people do when they meet for the first time. Neither seemed to want to be the first to break a grip so tight that it exposed white knuckles.Nevertheless, a friendship was born. And early on, Macron seemed to be the one European leader with a knack for managing his mercurial, three-decades-older counterpart. Macron invited the Republican president to join him for Bastille Day celebrations in July 2017, including an Eiffel Tower dinner date with their wives. Trump reciprocated by making Macron the guest of honor the following year at his first White House state dinner, the highest diplomatic honor the United States can extend to an ally. But by the end of Trump’s first term, the bromance had faded. And in his second term, the leaders now openly trade barbs, disagreeing over tariffs, Ukraine and the Iran war. That dynamic will be scrutinized next week when Trump and the leaders of Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan join Macron in the French lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains for the G7 summit. Read More Trump’s long-simmering frustrations with US allies could be on displayThere could be awkward moments between Trump and Macron, as well as among Trump and the other G7 leaders he’s criticized for not joining him in Iran. “But I also think European leaders are quite professionals when it comes to politics, and in some ways diplomacy at this point, and will maybe see it as an opportunity as well,” Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said in an interview. Kurt Volker, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO, said the Trump-Macron relationship has been further complicated by the Iran war and Trump’s complaints “that Europeans weren’t helping, when they hadn’t been consulted, and their interests are very much affected by this.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. “I think that was a negative for Macron,” Volker said. Trump joined Israel in a war against Iran over its nuclear program back in February without consulting other U.S. allies. He then complained publicly when European countries spurned his requests for their help. Waning support for Ukraine in its war against Russia from the Trump administration “has really irritated the French,” Volker said. “They feel this is important and we’re not paying attention to it.” Macron invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to join the leaders’ discussions on Tuesday. Macron is the G7 member who has dealt with Trump the longestIn Trump’s first term, Macron appeared confident that he could persuade and influence the U.S. leader, but the relationship increasingly has come to be defined by their disagreements. Macron now says he is “careful” about Trump’s statements, suggesting he no longer takes them at face value. Their relationship remains cordial as each calls the other “my friend.” But the relationship has also experienced some ups and downs. As president-elect, Trump attended the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in late 2024 at Macron’s invitation. After Trump began his second term in 2025, Macron was an early Oval Office visitor. The president wrote on social media that he was “delighted” to welcome Macron back to the White House and said the relationship with France has been “very special.”But at one point during the meeting, the French president publicly corrected Trump after he wrongly suggested that Europe would recover the money it had provided to support Ukraine. With a smile, Macron touched Trump’s forearm and replied, “We provided real money.” Macron also condemned as “brutal and unfounded” new tariffs that Trump slapped on steel, aluminum and a broader range of European imports in early 2025. But there have also been some lighter moments mixed with the tensions.A documentary aired last year on French television showed Macron telling Trump during a phone call that Zelenskyy had agreed to a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal. Trump replied, “You’re the greatest.” Macron has often said he can reach Trump directly whenever he needs to — and proved his point during last year’s U.N. General Assembly session in New York. After police officers blocked the French leader from crossing a street because traffic had been halted for Trump’s motorcade, Macron whipped out his cellphone and dialed the U.S. president.“How are you?” Macron said. “Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you!” ‘This is not a show,’ Macron has said about Trump’s NATO ambiguityMacron has argued that Trump’s “America first” policies bolstered his case for a stronger European defense capability that would lessen reliance on the United States. In April of this year, as Trump sent mixed signals about Washington’s commitment to NATO after the start of the war in Iran, Macron delivered some of his sharpest criticism of the U.S. president. “There is too much talk, and it’s going in all directions,” Macron said. “We all need stability, calm and a return to peace. This is not a show.” “You have to be serious, and when you want to be serious, you don’t say the opposite every day of what you said the day before,” he said. Trump, while mimicking a French accent, recently has taken to reenacting a conversation he says he had with Macron over drug prices and tariffs. Trump also poked Macron by telling a private luncheon in April that his wife, Brigitte Macron, treats her husband badly. The comments were in a video the White House had posted on its YouTube channel before blocking access. Macron didn’t see any humor in Trump’s comments. “The remarks I heard were neither elegant nor appropriate,” he said. “They do not deserve a response.”Still, Macron has tried to accommodate Trump’s schedule to ensure his presence at the summit in Evian-les-Bains, knowing that he has a record of leaving such gatherings early. Macron originally had set Sunday, which is Trump’s 80th birthday, as the opening day of the summit, but he pushed the start back a day because Trump is celebrating the occasion with a UFC show staged on the White House grounds.___Corbet reported from Paris. What to know about the EU’s new rules on migration and asylum as they come into effect
Migrants rescued south of Crete walk after their arrival at the the port of Lavrio, Greece, on July 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris, File)2026-06-12T05:08:52Z BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is set to implement a new set of rules Friday governing how each of its 27 member states will deal with irregular migration and asylum seekers. The European Migration and Asylum Pact is the culmination of years of grueling negotiations that overhauled the previous system, which was widely considered a failure and gave far-right parties a potent issue to win votes. All EU members were meant to be prepared for Friday’s implementation by adapting laws, training staff and beefing up border infrastructure. But even the European Commission admits no member is completely ready. Human rights advocates warn the pact could add to the difficulties of asylum seekers face while trying to find safe haven in the EU.Here is what to know: Screening and fast-tracking border proceduresUnder the new rules, foreigners will be screened at EU borders for up to seven days before they are admitted.Asylum seekers from countries listed as “safe” by the EU or pose a “security threat” will go through faster asylum procedures of three months instead of six. Some applicants may be kept at the border while their cases are processed. They will be given only one chance to appeal a rejected application. The European Commission says some member states still need to implement a new biometric database called Eurodac that will register and store information of adults and children as young as 6. Many more countries need to set up border facilities to handle screening, asylum processing and detentions. Work also is needed to ensure there are independent rights monitoring at the border, the commission said. Read More Swiftly returning rejected asylum seekersOne of the pillars of the new pact is to speed up voluntary and forced returns of rejected asylum seekers by automatically issuing return orders when an application is rejected. A clear political priority of the center and far-right politicians who swept to power in 2024 across the EU, returnees are slated to be sent to countries deemed safe like Syria and Bangladesh. The European Agency for Asylum said there were about 802,000 pending first-time asylum applications in March.Member states also are working with EU lawmakers to allow for the creation of “return hubs” in third countries where they can send migrants who can’t be repatriated. Questions about deportation centers are being quietly negotiated between a group of five nations and potential partners abroad. Sharing the burden between member nationsAmong the most contentious issues that has divided EU countries was sharing responsibility for asylum seekers, especially in times of crisis. Because migrants must apply for asylum in the first EU country they enter, front line countries along the Mediterranean like Greece and Italy have long complained they bear the weight of irregular arrivals. Citing their inability to cope under pressure, these countries allowed passage of many migrants to northern and western Europe without permission. This shifted some of the burden onto northern countries like Germany and Sweden that saw asylum applications soar to record levels, bringing their migration systems to the brink of collapse. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. The new pact includes a solidarity mechanism to ensure border countries aren’t left on their own. Other EU members will either take in a share of asylum seekers or offer financial support to compensate. Countries can also offset their share if they receive migrants through secondary movements, meaning when a migrant arrives in one country and moves on to another. But not all member states were happy with this solution. Poland for example suspended the right to asylum since early 2025 citing the weaponization of migration on its border with Belarus. Originally a temporary measure, it has been extending the suspension since. Hungary’s new prime minister Péter Magyar is continuing many of the hardline immigration policies of his predecessor, Viktor Orbán, including a refusal to take in migrants. But Magyar has said he would realign Hungary’s asylum procedures to avoid being fined 1 million euros daily for Orban’s policy that broke the bloc’s asylum rules. Pact will not bring immediate changeThe commission has admitted work on implementing the pact will continue after June 12 since no country is fully ready. “It won’t be a like a light switch turning on on June 12,” said Susan Fratzke, a senior policy analyst with the Migration Policy Institute. “Some of these things will take time.”The lack of clarity and consistency is problematic, said Susanna Zanfrini, director of the International Rescue Committee’s Italy office. That ambiguity “creates uncertainty for both people seeking protection and the organizations supporting them at the very moment they most need clear information about their rights, options, and access to support to survive, recover and rebuild their lives,” she said. Human rights groups cry foulHuman rights advocates have criticized the new rules, arguing they undermine the right to seek asylum by rushing assessments. They say accelerated procedures introduce racial profiling while denying international protection to applicants with legitimate claims, while also warning of an expected spike in prolonged detentions at EU borders.Judith Sunderland, senior refugee and migrant rights adviser at Human Rights Watch, said the new pact “slams the door in the face of people who deserve to be treated with dignity and to have a fair hearing of their claims for protection.” Lukas Gehrke, the Brussels chief for the International Organization For Migration, said regardless of how many people are sent out of the EU, many migrants will remain while losing integration funding under the new budget for the pact.“If we under focus on this, the failure of integration becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy,” he said.___Hadjicostis reported from Nicosia, Cyprus, and Brito reported from Barcelona, Spain. Rodri breaks silence on incident involving Barcelona star that sparked injury fears: ‘We know he is a hothead’
Rodri breaks silence on incident involving Barcelona star that sparked injury fears: ‘We know he is a hothead’Spain’s preparations for the World Cup briefly took an uncomfortable turn after an intense training-ground challenge involving Barcelona midfielder Gavi and Manchester City star Rodri became one of the most talked-about moments from the national team’s camp. The incident attracted attention after footage showed Rodri in visible pain following a heavy challenge from the Barcelona youngster. Given the importance of both players to Spain’s ambitions, the moment sparked concern among supporters and coaching staff alike.Fortunately for Spain, the situation did not lead to a serious injury, allowing the squad to continue preparations without a major setback.Gavi’s competitive nature causes scareFew players in world football approach every game with the same intensity as Gavi, and that competitive spirit was on display once again during Spain’s training session. The Barcelona midfielder challenged for possession with his usual aggression, but on this occasion the tackle went wrong. The challenge caught Rodri heavily, leaving the Manchester City midfielder on the ground and requiring immediate attention from medical staff. For a brief period, there was genuine concern around the training pitch because Rodri is one of the most important figures in Spain’s midfield setup, and any injury ahead of a major tournament would have represented a significant blow to the team’s plans. As soon as Gavi realised the impact of the challenge, he reportedly apologised to his teammate while staff assessed the situation.Rodri reveals what happenedSpeaking later to El Larguero, Rodri addressed the challenge and offered his view on the situation. Looking back on the moment, the Spanish midfielder said,Gavi has no head feelings towards Gavi. (Photo by Manuel Velasquez/Getty Images)“Yeah, he really gave me a hard time. We all know Gavi’s a bit of a hothead. He doesn’t hold back. “That’s something we like about his personality, although we try to tell him that training sessions are different from matches. “I didn’t realise I was being filmed, but to be honest, I was absolutely gutted.”Despite the painful challenge, Rodri’s comments clear the air that there are no hard feelings between the pair. Instead, he appeared to view the incident as a reflection of Gavi’s competitive character rather than any malicious intent, just as Spain coach Luis de la Fuente did.

Fabrizio Romano confirms: Real Madrid will not pursue Rodri this summer after Bernardo Silva signing
Fabrizio Romano confirms: Real Madrid will not pursue Rodri this summer after Bernardo Silva signingReal Madrid appear to have surprised everyone in the market by snapping up Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese international, who was a free agent, was closely linked with a move to Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. But Real Madrid appear to have swooped in and are set to sign him on a free transfer, with Fabrizio Romano already giving his customary ‘here we go’.Silva’s arrival, though, could impact Real Madrid’s transfer strategy in midfield, with Romano himself confirming that any move for Silva’s ex-teammate Rodri is now completely off the table. No interest from either sideRodri no longer an option at Real Madrid. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)According to Romano, Rodri himself stated he had no knowledge of or involvement with the transfer rumours linking him to Real Madrid. Florentino Perez has also confirmed from his side that the Spanish midfielder was never a target for the club this summer. This should put an end to what was turning into a compelling transfer saga – the idea that Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or ahead of Vinicius Jr. in 2024, could soon join Los Blancos, especially after the exit of Pep Guardiola at Man City.Bernardo Silva closes the doorThe primary reason the move is now definitively off is the signing of Bernardo Silva. Bernardo Silva is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer. (Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images)With the Portuguese midfielder now joining Real Madrid, the need for a player of Rodri’s profile in the centre of the park has been addressed, at least in the short term.Mourinho’s midfield rebuild, which already includes the expected return of Nico Paz, now has Bernardo Silva as its marquee addition, leaving no room or appetite for a move of the scale and complexity that signing Rodri would require. What happens with Rodri nowWith Real Madrid out of the picture, the ball is firmly back in Rodri’s court regarding his own future.Manchester City have a new contract proposal on the table for the midfielder, and it is now up to him to decide whether to commit to an extension or run down his current deal, which would allow him to leave as a free agent in 2027.

Soccer-Empty seats at World Cup match renews concerns over ticket prices
By Natalia Siniawski and Miguel Lo Bianco GUADALAJARA, Mexico, June 11 (Reuters) - FIFA reported an attendance of 44,985 for ‌Thursday's World Cup match between South Korea and the ‌Czech Republic in Guadalajara, but swathes of empty seats around the stadium renewed concerns over ticket pricing and demand for the expanded tournament. While more than 80,000 squeezed into the Azteca stadium to watch the opener between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa, the optics of unoccupied rows ‌at the 46,000-seat stadium in Guadalajara, a city with a deep-rooted football culture, have intensified criticism of FIFA's commercial strategy for the first 48-team World Cup. Some fans at the stadium blamed the high ticket prices for the rows of empty seats and criticised FIFA for their pricing model. Reuters has contacted FIFA for comment. FIFA President ‌Gianni Infantino on Wednesday defended FIFA's ticket pricing following criticism from supporters who argued the cost of attending matches had become prohibitive. He said ticket prices were on a par with other major sporting events. FIFA has sold more than 6 million tickets ‌for the tournament and previously highlighted strong interest from across the Americas, with Infantino saying demand had exceeded expectations by "a factor of 10 or ‌more". However, groups such as Football Supporters Europe (FSE) had warned that "extortionate" pricing would exclude ordinary fans. According to FSE, ticket prices for this tournament have jumped fivefold compared to the 2022 World ‌Cup in Qatar. South Korea beat the Czechs 2-1 in the Group A match. Kennedy Center board seeks pause of ruling ordering removal of Trump’s name by Friday deadline
A man wheels a garbage bin outside of The John. F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Saturday, June 6, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Rod Lamkey, Jr.)2026-06-12T00:40:32Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s handpicked board at the Kennedy Center is mounting a last-minute effort to keep his name on the facade of the iconic performing arts facility before a court-ordered deadline to remove it by Friday. The board voted Thursday to seek a stay of U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper’s May 29 ruling that said Trump’s name was illegally added to the Kennedy Center, according to a person familiar with the move who requested anonymity to discuss a private meeting. The formal request was filed late Thursday. Cooper ruled that only Congress could institute a change to the Kennedy Center’s name and ordered references to Trump be removed by Friday. He also blocked the administration from closing the cultural and arts venue for major renovations that had been planned to start in July and last for two years. The board move marks a shift from a June 4 memo to staff from the Kennedy Center’s Office of General Counsel saying email signatures, letterhead and other documents must reflect the name as “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” or “Kennedy Center.” The Kennedy Center’s website has dropped the president’s name. And an email earlier this week sent to members offering ticket packages for the June 28 Mark Twain Award for American Humor ceremony came from the Kennedy Center without including Trump’s name. “The Trump administration’s 11th hour gambit after waiting nearly two weeks evinces desperation,” Norm Eisen, a board member at Democracy Defenders Action, and Nathaniel Zelinsky, senior counsel at the Washington Litigation Group, said in a statement. “That is what they should be feeling because they don’t have a legal leg to stand on. We will be vigorously contesting this latest ploy as we have throughout the case on behalf of Congresswoman Beatty and the American people.” Read More They represent Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center’s board who filed the lawsuit seeking to remove Trump’s name from the institution. After ignoring the Kennedy Center for much of his first term, Trump has wielded tremendous influence over the venue during his return to office. Just a month into his second term, he ousted the center’s previous leadership and replaced it with a hand-picked board of trustees that named him chairman. He brought in Richard Grenell to serve as president, a position he held until March when Matt Floca assumed the role. The center’s lineup has included more Trump-friendly programming, serving as the venue for events such as the premiere of first lady Melania Trump’s documentary, “Melania.” The board also announced it had renamed the facility the Trump Kennedy Center, a change scholars and lawmakers say must be initiated by Congress, and physically added the president’s name to the building’s facade. The fallout from the arts community was swift and intense. Actor Issa Rae, musician Bela Fleck and author Louise Penny were among the numerous artists who withdrew from appearances, while consultants such as musician Ben Folds and singer Renée Fleming resigned. Earlier this month, the executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra, Jean Davidson, left to head the Los Angeles-based Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.In addition to voting on the stay on Thursday, the board backed a resolution recognizing Trump’s “commitment to uphold this cherished American institution.” STEVEN SLOAN Sloan is the Washington correspondent at The Associated Press. Roma eyeing Lucumi in case of Ndicka’s exit
Roma eyeing Lucumi in case of Ndicka’s exitRoma could sacrifice Evan Ndicka on the altar of capital gains, given that he arrived in the capital on a free transfer. The Giallorossi have once again set their sights on Bologna’s Jhon Lucumì. The Colombian centre-back has already been linked with the Giallorossi, having been on Frederic Massara’s list a year ago. The 1998-born player finished the season with 43 appearances, scoring one goal and one assist. After a year, Roma could be back with a strong interest in Lucumì. As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, the Colombian defender’s future is up in the air, and the Giallorossi are evaluating his profile in the event of Evan Ndicka’s departure. The 1998-born defender would prefer to remain in Italy, avoiding a move abroad. Lucumì, however, isn’t just being sought by Roma. 17 T20 World Cup games, 17 losses - can Ireland break duck?
Ireland captain Gaby Lewis is hoping to lead Ireland to their first win in the T20 World Cup at their fifth appearance in the tournament [Getty Images]Ireland are preparing for their fifth T20 World Cup, but one thing has eluded them in their four previous appearances in the tournament - a win. They have exited in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2023 as the bottom side in their group and have lost all 17 games they have played in those four editions of the competition. While they missed out completely in 2024 as they failed to qualify, they are back in 2026 and ready to break new ground in England. They face Scotland in their opening game at Old Trafford on Saturday at 10:30 BST, hoping to break their duck and end that unwanted winless record.Captain Gaby Lewis, who has recovered from a quad injury to play in her fourth World Cup, was keen to acknowledge the big hurdle her side are desperate to try and finally clear."We've yet to have a win in a World Cup and that is a big thing that is hanging over us," she told BBC Sport NI."We really want to push to do that and get a couple of wins and not have to qualify for the next one."Scotland first up 'massive' for IrelandLewis missed the Tri-Nations series with a quad injury but said she is "back on track" to feature against Scotland [Getty Images]It would be fitting if Ireland's first win in the T20 World Cup came against the Scots given they denied the Irish a place in the tournament two years ago as they pulled off a shock win to reach the tournament for the first time.Lewis said there was "major heartbreak" in the Ireland camp after that sore defeat that forced the squad to have to watch the World Cup from home.Ireland are in a better place now and come into the tournament off the back of a productive Tri-Nations series in Clontarf where they beat both Pakistan and the West Indies."The series was a great success, we've got the results behind us. Confidence is high and that's exactly what you want going into a World Cup," Lewis added.Lloyd Tennant's side are ranked ninth in the world but are in a tough Group B which also has hosts England, holders New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies alongside the Scots. They will face all five sides with the top two in the group moving through to the semi-finals where they will face the top two from Group A.Scotland won by 39 runs the last time the two sides met in Nepal in January and Lewis believes getting off to a good start in their first game is "massive" for Ireland in terms of momentum."There's a big rivalry between us and them. They've probably got one up on us at the moment after beating us in Nepal. I think we're looking good and we're really excited for it."They've got a new addition in Kirsty Gordon (a former England spinner) which is a boost for them."If we get the win, then you never know against England."

West Ham want €50 million for Summerville
West Ham want €50 million for SummervilleRoma is interested in West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville. The English club was relegated to the Championship and may consider selling the Dutch winger, who will play in the World Cup alongside Malen. PSG is also interested in the 2001-born player, who scored five goals in the last Premier League season. This club has financial strength that Roma will find difficult to compete with.As reported by Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, PSG has contacted West Ham to inquire about Summerville and Mateus Fernandes. The Hammers have set their sights high on the Dutch winger: they’d need around €50 million to bring the 2001-born player away from London. The French club is also working with Summerville’s entourage. In short, PSG appears serious about the West Ham striker; Roma are unlikely to participate in an auction with one of the richest clubs in the world.

Why Trump is set to snub USA’s World Cup 2026 opener – and the one sporting event he will attend this weekend
Donald Trump is set to be absent from the Los Angeles Stadium when USA begin their 2026 World Cup against Paraguay on Friday night. The US are one of three co-hosts staging the tournament in North America alongside Mexico and Canada, and each nation’s opening game will feature its own opening ceremony.State figureheads usually appear at their country’s first match of the tournament and Trump was expected to be in the stands. Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani attended Qatar’s opening game against Ecuador in 2022, and Vladimir Putin watched Russia’s first game of the 2018 World Cup against Saudi Arabia in Moscow. But it has been widely reported that the US president will not attend, barring a late U-turn, instead leaving secretary of state Mark Rubio to travel from Washington with transport secretary Sean Duffy and secretary of homeland security Markwayne Mullin.Trump will be at the White House on Saturday evening, however, to host a UFC event, dubbed UFC Freedom, in celebration of his 80th birthday and the USA’s 250th anniversary.Donald Trump salutes before the college football game between the US Army and Navy at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore last December (AFP/Getty)The US president has regularly appeared at major sporting events during his two terms. He flew in to the Ryder Cup in New York last year and was present at the Club World Cup final in New Jersey last summer, inserting himself into Chelsea’s trophy celebrations on stage. His appearances have not always been welcomed. Trump was loudly booed at the NBA Finals last week after being shown on big screens. His vice-president, JD Vance, was booed at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan earlier this year. The start of the tournament has been clouded in controversy around high ticket prices and America’s strict border controls. Fans from more than half the qualified countries need visas to enter the United States, adding cost and uncertainty for travellers already wary of tight border enforcement. The Trump administration also denied a Somali referee entry over alleged links to “suspected members of terror organisations”.

Commanders new offensive weapon primed for breakout season
The Washington Commanders added plenty of new contributors on both sides of the ball this offseason. That was needed after a disappointing five-win season, but it's safe to say that vibes are definitely higher now. Most of the biggest additions came on defense, but there's some interesting offensive pieces as well, like tight end Chig Okonkwo. Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports recently identified one breakout player for each NFC team, and Pereles picked Okonkwo for the Commanders.Pereles offered the following rationale for picking Okonkwo:The Commanders' need to add speed and athleticism mostly focused on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, but they also added a player with both attributes to the tight end room in Chig Okonkwo. The former Titan is very good after the catch and has the burst to beat linebackers and safeties down the field, too. He set career highs in catches (56) and yards (560) last year in Tennessee. He's only 26, and he should fit well in David Blough's system, which will have more play-action rollouts and opportunities for Jayden Daniels to hit Okonkwo on the move, where he's at his best.As Pereles mentioned, the Commanders wanted to add speed and athleticism to the roster, and Okonkwo helps accomplish both of those things. The tight end has great speed for his position and has quietly been underrated in his career. In 2025, Okonkwo played in all 17 games and caught 56 passes for 560 yards and two touchdowns. That level of production was impressive considering how bad the Titans' offense was in 2025. Overall, Okonkwo has had at least 450 yards in each of his four NFL seasons.Another factor that could lead to Okonkwo breaking out is the relative lack of pass-catchers in Washington. Other than Terry McLaurin, there's not much to get excited about when it comes to Jayden Daniels' weapons. This should lead to Okonkwo getting plenty of targets, and I wouldn't be surprised if he hit a new high in catches or yards.Last year, the Commanders relied on Zach Ertz at tight end. It's not like Ertz was bad, but he was older and not the athlete Okonkwo was. Okonkwo should add an element to the team's tight end room that hasn't been there in years. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: TE Chig Okonkwo primed for breakout season

With the sale of Gordon, will this give us strong opportunity to compete for stronger players?Ciaran: A big sale was definitely a necessity to unlock some headroom and enable Newcastle to reinvest. So finalising Gordon's £69.3m switch to Barcelona before the window even opened felt like an important first step this summer. But Gordon will still leave a gap. There were a few penalties along the way, but he scored 17 goals for Newcastle last season - more than any other player. He is a regular starter for England. He was used to the intensity and physicality of the Premier League.Newcastle do not necessarily have the capability to bring in a replacement with an even stronger profile given the wages and fees such talents command. However, they are looking for younger players who would not cost as much as Gordon right now, but who have immense potential that can be realised in the right hands.Newcastle's pursuit of Victor Munoz is a case in point. He is already a Spain international, but the 22-year-old winger has just completed his first full season as a first-team player at Osasuna.By moving for him now, Newcastle could secure Munoz for nearly half the fee Gordon commanded and, potentially, before other clubs are prepared to step in.Danny asked: Does Eddie Howe believe he has any players in the reserves or academy like Miley who are ready to make a breakthrough to the first team?Ciaran answered: Miley really is the club's crown jewel. He is Newcastle's youngest debutant in the Premier League and Champions League and no-one in the club's history has scored a goal for the club in both competitions at such a tender age. That is quite a benchmark, but there are a few others who Howe has kept a close eye on.Sean Neave, Alex Murphy and Leo Shahar have obviously been in and around the first team for a while now and winger Park Seung-soo was named on the bench on the opening day last season.Beyond that quartet, Rory Finneran, who has already won a senior cap for the Republic of Ireland at just 18, has trained with the first team, as has fellow midfielder Mason Miley, the younger brother of Lewis.Newcastle's senior players at the World Cup will be given about three weeks off once they finish up at the tournament, so I could see Howe bringing several youngsters to the club's pre-season training camp in Spain in July. That will give them a chance to really impress. Then there could be decisions to be made as the summer goes on regarding who may benefit from a loan or who has impressed enough to stay around the first-team environment.Keep across this page on Friday for parts two and three of Ciaran's Q&A, which will look at subjects including the striker situation and whether Howe has dropped some hints about the coming season.

Barcelona tie down 18-year-old Egyptian wonderkid with long-Term deal until 2029 – report
Barcelona tie down 18-year-old Egyptian wonderkid with long-Term deal until 2029 – reportA day after it was confirmed that Barcelona had activated the purchase option included in Hamza Abdelkarim’s agreement, fresh information from Mundo Deportivo has now shed light on the player’s contract situation. As relayed by the outlet, the youngster will sign a three-year contract with the Catalan team, keeping him at the club until 2029.The deal marks another important investment in youth from the Blaugrana, who continue to search for emerging talents capable of becoming first-team stars in the years ahead.Barcelona complete permanent moveAny uncertainty surrounding Abdelkarim’s future has now disappeared following the confirmation of Barcelona’s decision to make his stay permanent.Al-Ahly officially announced the agreement through social media, confirming that Barcelona had exercised their option to purchase the young striker. View this post on InstagramA post shared by Hamza Abdelkarim (@hamzabdelkarim)The operation is expected to cost around €1.5 million plus performance-related add-ons, with the remaining paperwork set to be completed shortly. The latest update also reveals that Abdelkarim will sign a contract running until June 2029, giving Barcelona long-term control over one of the most promising young forwards to emerge from Egypt in recent years. The teenager initially arrived in Catalonia during the January transfer window and spent the second half of the season adapting to life at the club while continuing his development within the academy setup.Strong performances have convinced BarcelonaAlthough Abdelkarim has only been at the club for a short period, he has already managed to leave a positive impression on those overseeing his progress. The Egyptian forward featured for Barcelona’s Juvenil A side under Pol Planas and demonstrated why the club were willing to invest in his future. Barcelona have permanently signed Hamza Abdelkarim. (Photo courtesy: FC Barcelona official website)His performances, movement in attack and eye for goal reportedly convinced decision-makers that he was worth keeping beyond his initial spell.Notably, the striker arrives with significant expectations. Back in Egypt, he is already viewed as one of the country’s brightest football prospects and will play alongside Mohamed Salah at the World Cup.While the transfer may not generate the same headlines as a major first-team signing, it shows the type of operation that has often benefited Barcelona in the past. The club has increasingly focused on identifying young talents before their value explodes on the global market. And at just €1.5 million plus add-ons, Abdelkarim represents a relatively low-risk investment with potentially huge upside.

Diamond Necklace Can Sparkle In Prix de Diane
Diamond Necklace Prix de Diane 2026Diamond Necklace is set to take on ten rivals in Sunday’s Prix de Diane at Chantilly as Aidan O’Brien bids to complete a French Classic double. The unbeaten three-year-old filly heads an 11-runner field for the Chantilly Group One, with the Ballydoyle trainer returning to France with his Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas) winner following her impressive success at Longchamp last month.Run over 2,100 metres (1m 2½f), the Prix de Diane is due off at 3:05pm local time and offers a prize fund of €1 million. Restricted to three-year-old fillies, it remains one of the most prestigious horse racing contests in the French calendar.Diamond Necklace has been installed as the red-hot 8/11 favorite for Sunday’s Prix de Diane. With the William Haggas-trained Lilt next best at 11/2 and the English 1000 Guineas runner-up Evolutionist 8/1.O’Brien Expects Diamond Necklace to Cope With Extra DistanceAidan O’Brien Speaking to France Galop, O’Brien revealed he has been delighted with Diamond Necklace since her French Guineas victory and said a return to Chantilly had always been the plan if everything went smoothly after Longchamp. The trainer also expressed confidence that the step up in trip will suit the daughter of St Mark’s Basilica.Having raced exclusively over a mile so far, Sunday’s contest will see her tackle the furthest distance of her career.O’Brien’s only previous Prix de Diane success came in 2021 with Joan Of Arc, while last year’s renewal was won by Francis-Henri Graffard’s Gezora.Aidan O’Brien’s Previous Prix de Diane Runners 2006 – Queen Cleopatra (3rd) – K. It could be Moments Of Joy, we’re thinking of running.“With Diamond Necklace, since she won the French Guineas, everything has gone well. I’ve been very happy with her. The plan was always, if everything went well in the Guineas, to come back here. Everything has been very good since her last victory. I think she’s even better on better ground.“Obviously, she won nicely the last time and it’s her second run of the year. We were delighted. So if she did that again, we’d be over the moon. Everything has gone well and we’ve been very happy with her since. We always thought a mile and a quarter shouldn’t be a problem for her.” Aidan O’Brien told France GalopMoments Of Joy Provides Ballydoyle Prix de Diane Back UpDiamond Necklace is not O’Brien’s only possible runner in the race.As the top Irish handler is also sending Moments Of Joy as a likely Diane contender following her fourth-place finish in the Musidora Stakes at York. While Diamond Necklace remains Ballydoyle’s main hope on Sunday, Moments Of Joy adds further strength to the team. However, standing in their way is a strong British challenge led by Lilt and Evolutionist.Moments Of Joy was last seen finishing fourth behind Legacy Link in the Dante Stakes at York last month. Plus the runner-up in that race Felicitas is also expected to make the trip to Chantilly for British trainer Ed Walker. William Haggas’s Lilt caught the eye when landing a Listed contest at York on just her second career start, with Tom Marquand expected to take the ride once again.Evolutionist, meanwhile, arrives after finishing second to O’Brien’s Royal Ascot winner True Love in last month’s 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket (watch below). Her trainer Karl Burke said. “I was pretty disillusioned with racing over here [in Britain].“We thought about putting Spigot Lodge on the market, and we went and viewed property in France. I did the modules at the same time as Francis Graffard and I got to know him a little at that time. But it was not to be and, as it turned out, it was probably the right decision to stay.”O’Brien has already enjoyed French Classic success this season with Constitution River in the Prix du Jockey Club. And now Diamond Necklace now gives him the opportunity to add the French fillies’ Classic to an already impressive campaign. The Irish trainer will be hoping to take this, before turning his attention to the five-day Royal Ascot meeting next week – a fixture Aidan O’Brien has fired in a record 96 winners over the years.Prix de Diane Runners, Draw, Jockeys and Betting Odds Evolutionist, Shane Foley (drawn 5) – 8/1Moments Of Joy, Wayne Lordan (8) – 25/1Habibi, Cristian Demuro (2) – 66/1Evita, Christophe Soumillon (9) – 50/1Pink Panthera, Tony Piccone (6) – 33/1Esna, James Doyle (11) – 14/1Inis Mor, Oisin Murphy (4) – 20/1Diamond Necklace, Ryan Moore (3) – 8/11Felicitas, Kieran Shoemark (7) – 9/1Green Spirit, Maxime Guyon (1) – 14/1Lilt, Tom Marquand (10) -11/2Note: Odds are just a guide and subject to changeRelated HeadlinesDoes King Charles III Have Any Royal Ascot Runners In 2026?Outfielder Leads Wesley Ward’s Seven-Strong Royal Ascot ReturnFormer Derby Fancy Dies After Ballydoyle Training Accident

Liverpool rocked as Van Dijk green-lights sensational move away
Liverpool rocked as Van Dijk green-lights sensational move awayLiverpool are facing a centre-back shakeup over the summer. The outgoing Premier League champions are still coming to terms with the loss of Ibrahima Konate. Konate, 27, will be leaving on a free transfer having failed to agree a new deal and Real Madrid is expected to be his next destination.New head coach Andoni Iraola will be expected to integrate big-money new signing Jeremy Jacquet into the backline - while Giovanni Leoni’s return from injury will also have to be factored in.Liverpool could also lose Joe Gomez with the England international potentially available for sale just one year before his contract expires. In this context one would imagine keeping Virgil van Dijk on board at all costs would be the priority. The defender - about to turn 35 - is also under contract until 2027 having inked a two-year £400k per week renewal last season.Galatasaray locked in Van Dijk talksBut there are murmurings of a departure growing for the long-serving captain - with Galatasaray reportedly locked in talks with the Dutchman. The Turkish giants would like to take on Van Dijk - without paying a transfer fee. That kind of deal would surely be out of the question - unless Richard Hughes is in a rush to get the all-time great defender off the wage bill.“Efforts to sign Van Dijk, a player highly admired by head coach Okan Buruk, have been accelerated,” a report in Fotomac reads.“The Galatasaray management aims to complete the transfer of the famous star on a free transfer.“The experienced central defender, who is with the Dutch national team at the World Cup, has given his agent authorization to negotiate.“It was reported that Galatasaray has also intensified its contacts for the transfer of the 34-year-old star and expects a positive outcome soon.“The Dutch central defender, reportedly impressed by the atmosphere at Rams Park and the support from the fans, is said to be open to joining the yellow-red team.”Wesley Sneijder's key role in talksThe deal is set to be orchestrated by Wesley Sneijder - a Galatasaray favourite and compatriot of Van Dijk’s.“Sneijder, who provided information to the Dutch defender and expressed his desire for his compatriot to join Galatasaray, is said to play an active role in the transfer,” the report reads.Let’s hope nothing happens until Van Dijk is back from the FIFA World Cup where he is leading his nation. Having lost Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already on free transfers along with Konate surely this would be one deal too far.

Liverpool confirm landmark new contract for defender in official club statement
Liverpool confirm landmark new contract for defender in official club statementLiverpool academy defender Prince Cisse has signed his first professional contract on Merseyside.Earlier this week, the Merseyside club published the list of players to be released at the end of their contracts, and those who’ve been offered new deals.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! For now, we extend our congratulations to him on turning professional, and hopefully he’ll go on to have many great moments in a Liverpool shirt in the years to come!

Insider hints at chances of Kroupi joining Liverpool as transfer priorities mapped out
Insider hints at chances of Kroupi joining Liverpool as transfer priorities mapped outEli Junior Kroupi is set to be one of the hottest properties on the transfer market this summer, and Andoni Iraola’s appointment as Liverpool head coach has inevitably fuelled speculation over a potential reunion with the Bournemouth striker.CaughtOffside initially reported in February that the Reds had been ‘keeping a close eye’ on the 19-year-old, who enjoyed a terrific first season with the Cherries in which he scored 13 Premier League goals, the most by a teenager in their debut campaign in the division.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYHowever, Vitality Stadium chief executive Tiago Pinto insisted last month that the Frenchman won’t be sold at any price this summer, and it’s also understood that the youngster is happy at the south-coast club.Brown: Liverpool unlikely to move for Kroupi this summerThat hasn’t stopped the rumours over a potential move to Liverpool, but ex-Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has claimed that Kroupi isn’t among the Merseysiders’ transfer priorities for the upcoming window, with other positions being targeted instead. He told Football Insider: “Iraola is going to have to put transfer plans in place at Liverpool. There are a number of positions where they need to improve, but I’m told a new striker isn’t high on their list now, there are other positions they want to target.“There’s been some talk about Iraola wanting to sign Kroupi from Bournemouth, but I would be very surprised if that move happened. They’ve still got Alexander Isak, who they spent £125m on; and [Hugo] Ekitike, even though he’s out injured until next year, will come back into the side.“Bringing in another striker, where will he fit in? Kroupi will want to play regularly, so that’s part of the reason I can’t see it happening. They already have the players they want.”Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustLiverpool have other areas to address in the transfer windowWhile Liverpool will inevitably be linked with a host of Bournemouth players this summer after Iraola took the job at Anfield, Brown is probably right in downplaying the likelihood of Kroupi following his former boss to Merseyside in the next few months.Isak will surely be the go-to option at centre-forward next season so long as he’s fit (which admittedly hasn’t been the case often enough in recent months), and Ekitike will be pushing for an immediate recall whenever he returns from his Achilles injury. The Athletic reported this week that a ‘multi-functional attacker’ is set to be a priority for FSG in this transfer window, with a greater need for a winger than a central striker, with a new right-back also likely to be targeted.Bournemouth could reportedly demand ‘well in excess’ of £100m for Kroupi in the summer (The i Paper), an astronomical figure even when taking into account his brilliant debut season in the Premier League.Considering the other transfer business that’s needed at Anfield before the end of August, it’s hard to envisage Liverpool spending that much on the 19-year-old, whose future will no doubt continue to be the subject of much speculation over the next few weeks.

If you're alone, I wouldn't say I don't care about my life, but you are more relaxed and taking decisions is easier and faster."On the complications he experienced at the Iran-Azerbaijan border, he added: "I was stuck at the border for maybe 48 hours. They refused me, sent me back to Iran and I slept at the border."But I was so lucky because before the war started I bought an eSIM. After that, they cut the internet in Iran."So I had no contact and I was praying that when I reached the border I would get some signal - and it worked. This saved my life."I could talk to the French embassy and they helped me to get my passport. They spoke to the Azerbaijani forces and then I got out."St Mirren, Scottish weather & ticket pricesHaiti striker Nazon had a brief spell on loan at St Mirren in 2019 [SNS]With domestic football in Iran suspended because of the ongoing conflict, Nazon had to follow an individual training programme to prepare for the World Cup.The Haiti squad have become heroes for leading the nation back to football's grandest stage, where they will make just their second appearance at the finals.Nazon acknowledges that the players are now "part of the country's history" but insists they will play without "extra pressure", starting with their opener against Scotland."We are ambassadors of our country and we know we have a responsibility," he says. "We know the young people also see us as examples."But we don't have to put extra pressure on ourselves and, when we play for our country, it's more a mission and we do it with passion and with love."On loan at St Mirren from Belgian club Sint-Truiden for the second half of the 2018-19 season, Nazon "had a story" in Scotland. It was short-lived, though. The forward played 12 games, scoring twice, but said he was "not ready for this kind of aggression and fight" in Scottish football, while the weather also played a part."I remember one game we had sun, snow and rain," he recalls. "After this, I was like, OK, I'm done."Weather is unlikely to be an issue for Nazon this summer in North America. The striker, a friend of Scotland defender Dom Hyam - with whom he played at Coventry - did, however, voice concerns about inflated ticket prices for the upcoming World Cup matches."There is only one thing that starts to go in my brain - it's the ticket prices," he says. "Hopefully, this is not going to affect the crowd and people coming to the stadium, because we want this atmosphere."We want this energy around us. I'm looking forward to seeing Scottish people and Haitian people in the stadiums. This is going to be important."World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup
