SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPackers know cost of trading for Dillon GabrielPackers know cost of trading for Dillon Gabriel originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Cleveland Browns are setting up to make a quarterback trade by the end of the offseason, and if the Green Bay Packers felt like upgrading on their backup situation of Tyrod Taylor and Kyle McCord, maybe they could get involved.Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are competing for the starting QB job, and Taylen Green is the new, athletic draft pick.Dillon Gabriel? He seems to be on the outside looking in. Maybe in reality, he'd be QB3 ahead of Green, but if the Browns are keeping Green, then Gabriel is even less key to have on the roster.MORE: Chiefs' new contract makes it even harder to release Patrick MahomesThat sets him up as a trade candidate. While he wouldn't fetch a huge return, Gabriel is probably worth a little something on the trade market.Bleacher Report's Moe Moton assessed Gabriel's value in a new article and suggested that he'd be worth a 2027 sixth-round pick and 2028 seventh-round pick in a trade. The Packers signed Taylor after a bunch of other QB options were off the board, and they needed someone like him to replace the departed Malik Willis.Taylor isn't a guy who would be around for the long haul, though, and McCord is less proven in the NFL so far than Gabriel.MORE: Jahmyr Gibbs, Bijan Robinson playing a funny game of chickenIf the lefty came that cheap, maybe he'd be worth considering."As Watson and Sanders battle for the lead position, the Browns can shop Gabriel, who, in limited action, posted solid passing numbers," Moton writes. "At 5'11", 205 pounds, he's a smaller quarterback, but teams may see him as a solid backup or potential fill-in starter."Jordan Love gets hurt often for the Packers, and as long as that keeps happening, the backup position will be quite important.Gabriel isn't a perfect answer, but he certainly looks like he'll be available.More NFL news:A.J. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLewis Hamilton Explains the Brutal Tyre Reality Destroying Second Run AttemptsQualifying at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix is officially in the books, and while the grid is locked in, the drivers are opening up about the absolute tightrope they had to walk to secure their positions.Speaking to Sky Sports F1 immediately after the session, Lewis Hamilton shed light on the intense pressure of the final shootouts, exposing a brutal thermal reality that completely eliminates any safety net for the drivers. On this track, you either nail the peak performance of the rubber on lap one, or your session is effectively over. The Single-Lap CliffIn modern Formula 1, drivers occasionally rely on a “prep lap” or a mid-session cool-down lap to take a secondary stab at a flying lap on the same set of soft tyres. However, the blistering track temperatures and abrasive track surface in Barcelona have completely eliminated that luxury.Hamilton explained that the compounding thermal degradation turns a second push lap into an exercise in futility.May 3, 2026; Miami Gardens, FL, USA; Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton (44) before the Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix at Miami International Autodrome. Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images“These tyres only last one lap, right?” Hamilton stated bluntly. “So you only have two shots at it in each session. And even if you do a cool-down lap to go again, the car balance is completely off, so it’s not a good reference.”This one-lap limitation introduces a massive psychological burden during Qualifying. Because the light grey, sun-baked asphalt of the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit naturally triggers severe understeer and sudden rear-end snaps, sliding just a fraction of an inch too wide immediately cooks the surface layer of the tyre. Once that thermal threshold is crossed, the balance of the chassis completely disintegrates.Hamilton Clambering Out of a Practice HoleThe single-lap window made Hamilton’s eventual qualifying position even more impressive, given the mountain he had to climb during practice. After sitting out the opening FP1 session on Friday, Hamilton found himself completely at sea during the subsequent representative runs, desperately hunting for compliance from his Ferrari chassis.“Honestly, this weekend’s been so difficult,” Hamilton admitted. “Missing FP1—not that it’s necessarily an excuse to miss FP1—but I had a few setbacks, so every time I went out in FP2, I was just over a second off, and I just didn’t feel quite comfortable enough.”The deficit didn’t magically disappear on Saturday morning either, leaving the seven-time World Champion severely doubting where his starting position would be heading into the high-stakes knockout sessions.“So then I went into FP3 and again, I was easily four tenths, five tenths off, and I was thinking, ‘Jeez, where am I going to get that pace?'” Hamilton revealed.Ultimately, finding the sweet spot under extreme pressure when the tyres offer exactly 60 seconds of peak performance is what separates the elite on Sunday. Hamilton managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat when it mattered most, but his technical breakdown proves that managing thermal degradation will be the defining battle of the Grand Prix.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM5-star OT Immanuel Iheanacho arrives on campus for Oregon DucksOne of the top players in the Oregon Ducks' incoming freshman class has arrived on campus. On Friday, 5-star offensive tackle Immanuel Iheanacho posted a photo of himself in Eugene on social media, signifying his arrival and enrollment for the start of summer. Iheanacho, one of the top-ranked players in the Ducks' 2026 class, was unable to get enrolled for the spring season, but he will hit the ground running over the next couple of months and work to find his way into the rotation on the offensive line. 5-Star Oregon OL Immanuel Iheanacho (@immanueli24) has arrived in Eugene 👀 🦆 Could be a big contributor this season pic.twitter.com/amQHvhruBB— Oregon Updates (@oregon__updates) June 13, 2026"Nacho" stands at 6-foot-7, 345 pounds, and is rated as the No. 11 overall player in the 2026 class; the No. 1 OT in the nation. At that size and with his skillset, it's not hard to imagine a world where he competes for a rotational role on the OL this year, at the very least. If he's going to crack the starting lineup, there is some serious competition, particularly with fellow true freshman OL Tommy Tofi, who made some waves this spring with his stellar play. 5-star Oregon WR signee Jalen Lott is on his way to Eugene 🦆 pic.twitter.com/4J7V8cZOaH— Oregon Updates (@oregon__updates) May 28, 2026This is the second big addition that the Ducks have made over the last month, with fellow 5-star Jalen Lott, the No. 19 player and No. 3 WR in the class, showing up on campus earlier this month as well. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLongtime Marlborough High football coach Sean Mahoney passes awaySeated next to his grandson on the gridiron on Nov. 27, 2025, Sean Mahoney was all smiles. After being wheeled out to the 50-yard line of the Morgan Bowl by his trusted confidant, Jeff Rudzinsky, Mahoney, seated in a wheelchair, joined his grandson, Sheamus, for the opening coin toss of a Thanksgiving Day football tussle between Marlborough High and Hudson High.Nearly seven months later, Mahoney, the longtime Marlborough High football coach, lost his battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare and aggressive neurodegenerative disease.Mahoney died on June 12. He was 63 years old. He is survived by his wife, Nikki, three children, Dan, James and Michaella, and two grandkids, Charlie and Sheamus. Information on funeral services is expected to be announced shortly.“Rest easy papa,” wrote Sheamus Mahoney on his Instagram story Friday morning with an old picture of him pulling a wagon full of hay with his grandfather seated on top.“Sean was a special guy,” said Rudzinsky, the former Marlborough High athletic director. “He was that friend that someone may not see for a long time, but when they did meet up, it was as if they never skipped a beat. He will be missed for his quick wit and sense of humor but most because he always thought of others first and made others feel good.”Sean Mahoney had a standout football and baseball career at Worcester State before embarking on a Hall of Fame career coaching high school football.Mahoney started his coaching journey with the Shrewsbury High football team in 1994 and then spent six seasons as the head coach at Assumption University. The longtime Marlborough resident took over as head football coach at Marlborough High in 2004 — just a few years before his grandson, Sheamus, was born.Across 20 seasons on the Panthers’ sideline, Mahoney won 154 games. He was named the MIAA 2020-21 Football Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2024.“He brought stability to the football program but then, being in the building, he was somebody the kids always knew they could talk to about anything,” Rudzinsky told the T&G last fall. “He was just that kind of person who had an open-door policy and he did the right thing for the kids. That’s the legacy that he’ll gladly leave.”Mahoney, who also taught history at Marlborough High, was inducted into the Worcester State University Hall of Fame in 2018 alongside his daughter, Michaella.A former standout softball pitcher at Worcester State, Michaella Mahoney-DaSilva teaches in Marlborough and coaches field hockey and softball at Marlborough High. Her dad previously coached girls’ basketball (among other sports) and, for a time, some of Marlborough’s female athletes played for a Mahoney across all three seasons.“The kids would joke, ‘You sound just like Mahoney,’” Michaella told the T&G last fall. “I would say, ‘I am a Mahoney.’ They got a lot of the same metaphors and motivational quotes from both of us.”During the middle of the 2024 high school football season, Sean Mahoney started to experience symptoms that made it hard for him to get out of bed. He thought he had a bad back. It was worse than that. He was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease with no cure.Mahoney’s last win as the Marlborough football coach came on Oct. 12, 2024, a 27-14 victory over Fitchburg at Kelleher Field.“In my eyes, (Sean) is Marlborough football,” current Marlborough football coach Ken Stukonis told the T&G last fall. Stukonis knew Mahoney for 25 years and served as his assistant coach for four seasons. “One thing about Sean, if you know him, he’s a solid person. He just does everything the right way, and that’s what he did with the program, and that’s why they had the success they had the last 20 years.”Michaella Mahoney-DaSilva and her son, Sheamus, moved from Derry, N.H., back to Marlborough nearly a decade ago. Having dad and “papa” nearby helped the transition.“My dad used to rock Sheamus to sleep humming fight songs,” Michaella told the T&G last year. “I'm never going to be able to hear a marching band drum and not think of my dad.”And seven months before he passed, Sean Mahoney got to share one final football memory with his grandson and family on Thanksgiving.“I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of Sheamus’ last game,” Mahoney wrote, along with his wife, Nikki, in an email to the T&G last fall.“He’s the guy that taught me everything I know,” Sheamus Mahoney said. “It’s an honor.”—Contact Tommy Cassell at tcassell@telegram.com. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMilan making progress to hire Matthias Jaissle as managerMilan making progress to hire Matthias Jaissle as managerSerie A side Milan have faced some problems in hiring a new manager and a new sporting director. But once again, things are looking bright for the Rossoneri. This is because Daniele Longo has reported about good progress in the hunt for Matthias Jaissle. The Al-Ahli boss had a meeting with Gerry Cardinale in London and this turned out to be quite promising. From the very first contacts that took place over Zoom, there has been optimism that he could be the next Milan manager. This is also helped by how the German is willing to give up a big part of his huge €11 million salary. The only drawback is his release clause of €6 million.Cardinale is not keen on paying the amo, with Ruben Amorim also waiting in the wings.Deal not done yetThis, for now, feels like another attempt from Milan to send the feelers about hiring a new manager. They have been in this loop before, where they touch base with many individuals and after promising signs, deals fall through. In this case, the release clause seems to be holding things up. Saudi clubs are usually in no need for financial impetus and it would be unlikely if they accept a lower fee to let Jaissle depart.Kaustubh Pandey I GIFN0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTennessee legacy Kenneth Simon II flips his commitment from Alabama to the VolsKenneth Simon II is coming home. The four-star linebacker from Nashville (Tenn.) Brentwood Academy flipped his commitment from Alabama to Tennessee on Saturday, giving Josh Heupel and the Vols a major in-state recruiting win and adding the No. 138 prospect in the Rivals Industry Ranking to the class. For Simon, whose family ties to Tennessee run deep with his father playing there, the decision wasn’t sparked by an official visit or a hard sell from the coaching staff. Instead, a return trip to Knoxville with longtime friends reminded him where he truly belonged.“My brother had a baseball tournament in Knoxville last weekend, and Kesean Bowman was on his official visit and invited me over,” Simon said. “Being around him and those guys just brought me back to the realization that my family’s here. The dudes I’ve known since I was 11 or 12 years old, they’re all right here. They know more than football. They know Kenny personally.”The weekend planted the seed, but the decision wasn’t immediate.[ $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage ]Simon returned home, talked it over with his parents and spent the next week thinking through every aspect of his future before reopening communication with Tennessee.“When I have something on my mind, it’s hard for me not to think about it,” he said. “I thought about it pretty much every second of every day this week. After that, we opened things back up with Tennessee, and even talking to the coaches again, it all just felt natural.”Relationships with Heupel, linebackers coach William Inge, Jim Knowles and the rest of the staff quickly picked up where they had left off.“They reached out, and it didn’t feel like we’d been apart. It was just natural,” Simon said. “It was easy. Those guys know me. It is just like when I was on campus last weekend. The relationships run deep with the people at Tennessee.”Decommitting from Alabama was not an easy decision, but Simon believed he had to make the choice that best fit him and his family.“It was definitely hard,” he said. “You build relationships with people. Those are real with Alabama. But at the end of the day this is the business side of football, and I had to do what was best for me and my family.”Ultimately, Tennessee’s pull proved impossible to ignore.Simon spent much of his childhood in Knoxville and grew up dreaming of wearing orange. The idea of running through Neyland Stadium alongside close friends and longtime teammates became too powerful to pass up.“Sixteen and a half years of my life has been spent in Knoxville,” he said. “I’ve been around Tennessee since I was a baby. Growing up, I always said I wanted to play at Tennessee. To be able to achieve that dream means a lot.”He also believes the experience will be different because of the relationships waiting for him on campus.“Imagine making a play and coming back to the sideline with guys that aren’t just your teammates—they’re your brothers,” Simon said. “That’s what makes this special.”0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJuventus agree personal terms with Aston Villa’s Emi MartinezJuventus agree personal terms with Aston Villa’s Emi MartinezSerie A side Juventus have been pushing for a goalkeeper signing and they have made some progress in a move for Emi Martinez.Tuttomercatoweb’s Niccolo Ceccarini has reported that they are continuing to push for the Argentine, having spoken to his entourage. This has led to some progress, as personal terms have been agreed with the player. He has agreed to sign a four-year deal, with Aston Villa proving to be the only problem in the deal. Their demands have proved a bit difficult to meet, which is making Juve consider some alternatives as they don’t want to be caught off-guard.As a result, Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario and Atletico’s Jan Oblak are also options. Things not promising yetEven if the player is keen on the move to Juve, the Old Lady have been struggling to meet Aston Villa’s demands. It feels like this could be unlikely to change, as Martinez still has a long-term deal in Birmingham. Juve would have to pay a significant amount to afford him but that will be difficult due to their failure to qualify for the Champions League. This can hinge on Martinez’s own demands too.If he pushes for a transfer, things can get easier. But for now, that push isn’t quite there.Kaustubh Pandey I GIFN0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

The current reserve slot receiver had a wild high school career. He threw for 3311 yards and 41 touchdowns as a junior and then only attempted 59 passes as a senior, with 1 touchdown and 5 interceptions, before returning to the wide receiver position, where he played as a sophomore. I’d love to know how that happened. I have no evidence, but my theory is that he banged up his shoulder. I’m not sure I’ve seen a high school QB who threw for over 3,000 yards and 40 touchdowns get moved to slot receiver. If you have any insight into this mystery, please let me know in the comments. As far as his Purdue career goes, he’s the type of player every roster needs, even if he never leaves the bench. The former preferred walk-on shows up to practice, kicks ass in the classroom, and will go pro in something other than football. He could probably drop down a level and play, but it appears this you man is a student-athlete and not an athlete who is forced to be a student.I have no idea whether he will make any impact on the field, but don’t underestimate the value of having solid program guys in practice and on the scout team. It’s hard to keep developmental prospects around, and having guys like Nolan on the roster helps with continuity and leadership.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNASCAR Changes Pocono Cup Series Race Start Time Due to WeatherNASCAR isn’t waiting until Sunday to react to the weather. With forecasts showing the potential for rain and thunderstorms later in the day, NASCAR announced Saturday that the start time for Sunday’s Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway has been moved up by one hour. The Great American Getaway 400 presented by VisitPA.com will now begin at 1 p.m. ET, giving officials a larger window to complete the 160-lap event before weather potentially becomes a factor. The move comes less than 24 hours before the green flag is scheduled to wave and underscores just how closely NASCAR is monitoring conditions heading into one of the most important race weekends of the summer.NASCAR Takes Action Before Race DayRather than waiting to see how the forecast develops on Sunday morning, NASCAR elected to make the adjustment in advance.Forecasts for Long Pond, Pennsylvania, continue to show the possibility of showers and thunderstorms developing later in the afternoon. By moving the start time forward, NASCAR improves its chances of completing the full race distance before weather arrives. The decision impacts Sunday’s Cup Series race only. While weather-related schedule changes are not uncommon in NASCAR, they typically occur much closer to race time. Making the move on Saturday provides teams, fans, broadcasters, and track officials additional time to adjust plans before race day. It’s also a sign NASCAR believes the weather threat is significant enough to warrant proactive action. For fans attending the race, the earlier start means gates, travel plans, and race-day schedules may need slight adjustments. For teams, it creates a clearer picture heading into Sunday’s event.Weather Adds Another Variable at the ‘Tricky Triangle’Pocono Raceway already presents one of the toughest challenges on the NASCAR schedule.Known as the “Tricky Triangle,” the 2.5-mile speedway features three distinctly different corners, forcing teams to compromise on setup more than at nearly any other track. Strategy, track position, fuel mileage, and tire management often play major roles in determining the winner. Now weather has entered the equation as well.Sunday’s race arrives at a critical point in the regular season, with playoff positions becoming increasingly important as drivers chase victories and valuable points before the postseason begins. An earlier start could help ensure the race runs uninterrupted, but teams will still be keeping a close eye on the forecast throughout the weekend. For now, NASCAR has made its move. The sanctioning body saw enough concern in Sunday’s weather outlook to adjust one of the weekend’s biggest events before race day even arrived.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat Christopher Bell said about massive Michigan crash, injury updateChristopher Bell's No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota hit the wall at Michigan on June 7 with 63 Gs of force, Bell said during a media availability on June 13 at Pocono.Bell suffered a fractured left wrist in the crash, in which a NASCAR official said this week was the hardest hit in the Next Gen era in the Cup Series.Bell said his left wrist was jammed as he continued to grasp the wheel as his car made impact with the wall.Under normal circumstances, Bell said, his injury would take about six weeks to heal and remove the cast. But he will attempt to drive with the injury starting at Pocono, and will plan to race the full 400 mile this weekend.PRACTICE AND QUALIFYING UPDATES: NASCAR Pocono qualifying live results, Cup Series sets starting lineupJoe Gibbs Racing O'Reilly Auto Parts Series driver Brandon Jones will be the driver on standby if Bell needs to be relieved on June 14. Bell said he would know after practice if he would run the full race or start the race for points and be replaced early in the event by Jones.Bell also said that he will be able to hold the wheel with his left hand on the straightaways at Pocono, allowing for shifting, but will be driving primarily right-handed.The Cup Series moves on to two road courses after Pocono, the Naval Base Coronado course in San Diego and at Sonoma. With right and left-hand turns, plus shifting, road-course racing will be more demanding."It's certainly going to be hard," Bell said, noting that his sim sessions went OK earlier this week in preparing for the San Diego course. This article originally appeared on Nashville Tennessean: What Christopher Bell said about massive Michigan crash, injury update0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLewis Hamilton Lifted by 8-Part Ferrari Upgrade: “We Have a Race” After Successful QualifyingLewis Hamilton arrived at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya expecting to spend the weekend chasing a four-tenth deficit to Mercedes. He did not expect to qualify within a whisker of them.Ferrari brought its most extensive upgrade package of the 2026 season to Barcelona – eight new components in total – yet Hamilton still finished ninth in FP2, over a second off the pace. He had also missed FP1, with F2 driver Dino Beganovic running the car in his place.By FP3, he was still four to five tenths adrift and, by his own account, completely unsure where the pace was going to come from.“Again, I think all weekend we’ve been kind of like four tenths off these guys. So we really thought, even with the upgrade, that maybe that’s where we were,” the seven=time champion said. “But for us to be that close—less than a tenth between us—is just a real showing of the hard work that everyone at the factory has done to bring these upgrades to this track.“So a big, big, big thank you to everyone back in Maranello. And yeah, we’ve just got to keep pushing, keep developing, and I’m hoping tomorrow we can squeeze some more out of this and hopefully keep up with these guys for once.”What the Upgrade Actually DoesIn Miami, Hamilton had been publicly critical of the SF-26’s front wing, specifically that the endplates lacked the diveplanes fitted to cars from McLaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull – components that manage airflow at the front and reduce turbulence from the front tyres. Ferrari addressed that for Barcelona. The nose also received a new straight mode mechanism, and both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc gained a redesigned floor and diffuser.Per Ferrari’s own estimate, the full package was worth around two tenths of a second per lap. The issue was that Hamilton had almost no meaningful running to understand any of it.Back in the car for FP2, he set the ninth-fastest time, more than 1.2 seconds off Lando Norris and eight-tenths behind Leclerc, struggling with grip and the overall handling of the SF-26. The upgrade and the circuit simply hadn’t clicked yet.His explanation of the turnaround following qualifying:“We’ve got a great crowd here by the way. The weather’s always incredible out here in Barcelona, so it feels great to be up here. Honestly, this weekend’s been so difficult. Missing FP1—not that it’s necessarily an excuse to miss FP1—but I had a few setbacks, so every time I went out in FP2, I was just over a second off, and I just didn’t feel quite comfortable enough.“These tyres only last one lap, right? So you only have two shots at it in each session. And even if you do a cool-down lap to go again, the car balance is completely off, so it’s not a good reference. So then I went into FP3 and again, I was easily four tenths, five tenths off, and I was thinking, ‘Jeez, where am I going to get that pace?’“I actually left the track between FP3 and qualifying—went back to my motorhome. Came back, and then in Q1 I was first. So I knew that I had a good balance and was really comfortable in that first session. Q2 was a little bit harder with traffic and everything. And then, you know, these guys did a great lap—naturally, congrats to George. But we’re in a good position to have the fight for tomorrow, so we have a race.”Hamilton arrives in Barcelona off back-to-back second-place finishes, the best consecutive results of his Ferrari career, with the team sitting second in the constructors’ championship behind an unbeaten Mercedes outfit. The gap in the constructors’ stands at 79 points, with Hamilton 66 adrift of championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the drivers‘ standings.A sub-tenth gap in qualifying doesn’t close any of that. But it does suggest that Maranello’s development direction is finally pointed the right way, and that Sunday’s race, on a circuit where tyre management increasingly separates the results, could be far more interesting than Friday suggested.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMESPN puts pair of Gators on center stage among nation's top WRsESPN surveyed more than 20 college football staffers, including general managers, scouting directors, and personnel executives, to help rank the top receivers entering the 2026 season. Mentioned in the compilation were a pair of Gators receivers, Eric Singleton Jr. and Dallas Wilson.Florida was one of only a handful of programs with multiple names appearing on the list. While Singleton Jr. and Wilson were both honorable mentions, the recognition highlights the dynamics within Florida's skill-position room. College football writers Eli Lederman and Max Olson highlighted the Gators' pass-catching unit as one with emerging talent, Wilson being the poster for upside.Singleton prepares for his first season in Gainesville after stints at Georgia Tech and Auburn. Earlier this spring, the Atlanta, Georgia, native ranked among the top transfers in the country by ESPN. Wilson enters his second season as a redshirt freshman despite coming in as a top-10 prospect, as his position has yet to be fully established.Notably left off this list is Vernell Brown III, who led Florida in receiving yards last season in his first year with the Gators, making history by becoming the first true freshman in program history to earn All-SEC honors at three different positions in a single season. The Gators have one of the most intriguing receiving corps in the nation, but their potential may hinge on consistency at the quarterback position.Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Gators Wire: Florida football boasts two names in ESPN's best receiver conversation0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOG Anunoby’s whole life prepared him for this Knicks momentNEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 10: OG Anunoby #8 of the New York Knicks celebrates after scoring the go-ahead basket against the San Antonio Spurs in the final seconds with Karl-Anthony Towns #32 and Jordan Clarkson #00 during the fourth quarter in Game Four of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 10, 2026 in New York City. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this photograph, User is consenting to the terms and conditions of the Getty Images License Agreement. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images) | Getty Images At first, you don’t see him. Like the rest of the 19,812 people in the Garden, or the 23.2 million viewers watching elsewhere, you’re following the ball. Jalen Brunson takes one jabbing step forward before Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox rush to converge on him, and then he uses the momentum from springing back to jump and lightly launch the ball on a rainbow arc toward the basket. There are a few milliseconds where nobody on the floor appears to move or react and then, as they reflexively all fall in toward the basket, OG Anunoby is there. It’s hard to track even in replay because Anunoby is moving so fast there isn’t a point you can pause the tape and his body won’t be blurred. All the regular metaphors don’t work. He’s not an arrow, nor a missile (easy, warmonger), maybe the closest is a diving bird of prey, but then we can’t know for sure if a raptor factors in faith with its instincts. In about five strides, starting from the end of the scorer’s table where he inbounded to Brunson, Anunoby catches up with the ball. By then Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper are also jumping after him, so that three long arms are tangling toward pebbled orange leather. Anunoby is not first because he’s fast, or because he didn’t hesitate to start his thundering run toward the rim, or because he’s stronger or more athletic. They’re all factors, but the main reason is that each component — the long stride, knowing when to lift from the floor, the ability to soften touch just enough to tip a ball rather than swat it with momentum’s full force — is reflexive. Practiced alone or in sequence hundreds of times. In games, in actual practice, in his head, stakes varying but stakes not really a factor. He did it all not knowing whether Castle or Harper would throw him off course with their bodies, or whether the ball might bounce wide. He did it because Anunoby’s career arc that led to, well, that arc, has been one of effort, willingness and the ability to take himself out of any given moment as its main actor, even if he is. Benevolence, you could say (Karl-Anthony Towns did: “The right hand of god, can’t spell god without OG”), but mostly, very mortal work.OG Anunoby didn’t officially play in the AAU tournament where he was discovered and recruited by Indiana University. He was on the floor grabbing steals, sprinting up and down the court, dunking, hitting threes, and of course, tipping the ball, but his name wasn’t listed in any of the Atlanta tournament’s programs. Tom Crean, Indiana’s then-coach, was posted at the baseline with his assistants to watch a couple other highly touted prospects and found themselves instead captivated by Anunoby. They flipped through the tournament’s compiled player guides and found no record of him. Anunoby had initially been scratched because of a broken wrist that ended his junior year at Jefferson City early, so his name wasn’t in any of the tournament material. Crean tracked him down through the tournament’s director and invited Anunoby to campus, then recruited him. There is the sense with much of the NBA draft and scouting pipeline that beyond the more highly touted names, you have to go searching. Not only for talent, but for fit, style, skill, all weighed against a young athlete’s health and longevity, prospects must be “future-proofed.” Even the very best at this kind of scouting get it wrong, and the very best also acknowledge how much luck and timing play a part. When you really start to consider the conditions necessary for a person to get drafted, and then land on a team that will have a complementary development program or a plan for that person at all, it becomes even more of a wonder who makes it and who sticks around in the league.Anunoby wound up being drafted by the Toronto Raptors because he was coming off a devastating ACL injury that ended his sophomore year at Indiana after 16 games. Masai Ujiri, then the Raptors President, admitted it, saying on draft night that “If he doesn’t have that injury, I don’t think we have a shot.” Anunoby had slipped to 23rd. Even if the Raptors weren’t expecting Anunoby, they were ready for him. A group that had doggedly lost in only the most wrenching ways for seasons, even before the three sequential postseason defeats that coined the term “LeBronto”, the locker room Anunoby joined had a particularly honed hard-nosed ethos with the bone-deep understanding of what it means to chip away. The Raptors were pests. For an athlete who used to call his high school coaches relentlessly to let him into the gym, and then call the middle school coaches when the high school coaches stopped answering, the fit felt like home. The Raptors’ style was all ugly intangibles, cumulative play that pushed high-touch, share-the-ball offense that while not blistering, was as relentless as the defense that sparked it. All of it backed by high-IQ decision-making, driven by floor savant Kyle Lowry. There is perhaps more elegance in the way the 2025-2026 NBA Finals Knicks are playing — have evolved throughout the postseason to play — but there is also a familiar DNA coursing through the team. Jalen Brunson is the engine and the ballast, Karl-Anthony Towns the wily big able to shift opponents around him at whim; Mikal Bridges the ace shooter, and Josh Hart the Swiss Army knife skillset deploying what’s needed beyond the boxscore. If trying to mirror this Knicks team with that Raptors group, then Anunoby is the player he was comp’d to in his own draft’s scouting: Kawhi Leonard. And yet, he’s more. In his rookie season, Anunoby started his first NBA game on November 14th because Norman Powell suffered a hip injury that had him out for four games. A month later, Anunoby led all starter rookies in offensive and defensive rating, had the best turnover-to-assist ratio for a non-guard position, and held the third highest true shooting percentage.“Sometimes, as a young player, you think too much and you try to get everything right. But when he comes in, he just plays,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said at the time. “That young man is doing a good job.”Anunoby cut his professional teeth on basketball that required repetition, work for the sake of the work. Those Raptors also had the kind of self-awareness that only comes after suffering big losses together, the sort of knocks that force the ego out of you. The team had plenty on the court, then lost DeMar DeRozan, and just before his second season began in Toronto, Anunoby’s father, his namesake, died. Anunoby was away from the team twice that fall, for a memorial for his father in Jefferson City and then for his burial in Nigeria. As in life, lows — and loss — can bring clarity. There was a deep level of care and regard for each other within that Raptors group. It only crystallized as the season continued. The saying “play for each other” is leaned on a lot in basketball, but with how changeable NBA rosters are teams don’t consistently do it; unlikelier still that when watching, you can actually see it happening. Anunoby also missed Toronto’s championship run with what felt like flukiest appendicitis timing on earth; there’s a sensation watching him win for, play for his Knicks teammates now that it’s that past version of Anunoby merging with the present one, finally unleashing the moves and motivation he had to put on ice in 2019.Of course, that’s oversimplifying it. As The Athletic’s senior Raptors writer Eric Koreen laid out, Anunoby has come this far, improved to this point, because he works steadily on what needs improvement until he fixes it. It sounds simple, but it’s a rare and mercurial trait. It’s common for a player to add one skill to their utility belt at a time – a passable three-point shot, or getting better playing through contact – and be finished for a while. Anunoby has worked with the same quiet persistence on his entire toolkit, and has flashed one or more of those sharpened and polished improvements in each game of this series.Going all the way back to his ghostly appearance in that AAU game, where he was a presence without a name, Anunoby has always been good at unsettling his defensive mark. He’ll hang out in the corner, lulling opponents to think the defense is set, only to pop in and deflect the ball, or suddenly be behind them, a brick wall of a screen they turn right into. He’s been menacing Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, even Victor Wembanyama the same way. But Anunoby’s also guarded every NBA superstar with the cool unflappability on display now. It’s been beautiful to see so many more people get acquainted with Anunoby’s nonplussed demeanour, a trait that’s either a long-running bit or goes back to Anunoby Sr., who told his children to choose their words precisely and that “if you have to talk, you should say something that doesn’t take away from the conversation, but enriches it.” There’s so little space given to one of the most common emotional phenomena felt as a fan, which is when a favorite leaves you. Whether the departure is drawn out or abrupt, amicable or acrimonious, the only constant is the recognition that it’s all part of the NBA’s larger machine. A churning system. A system that, in its speed and mechanisation, enforces the idea that you are not supposed to care so much about what happens to a person whose footwork you memorised like steps to a dance.Perhaps that’s the silver lining in losing a favorite player to a trade, that when they go on to bigger things, on much larger stages, you see flashes that take you back in your own fandom. Still, it’s disingenuous to Anunoby to suggest that what he’s showing in this series is somehow out of nowhere, or wholly unexpected. It’s just as false to point to the draft, or development, as ways to get the same result in a new form.NBA arcs aren’t replicable, as much as GMs and scouts pine for that to be true. There are beautiful, fleeting moments where an athlete’s past lines up with the present to flash a clear view back to potential as it unfolded, but that clarity is all in retrospect. The chain of events that led Anunoby to what could be his second title and first played-in Finals run are so individually keyed to his development: the physical setbacks, the group he grew with in Toronto, patience he had playing behind Pascal Siakam, then Kawhi Leonard; arriving in New York and to some degree starting again — then again with Mike Brown. His competitive profile is just as tied to his lived experience, his family and upbringing, the dual confidence and necessity to be of service to others instilled in him by his father and mom, a Nigerian national track athlete, who he lost at just a year old. It’s the singularity that makes him — any athlete’s arc that traces these unique-as-fingerprint highs — so special, that makes watching it happen all the more astonishing. It’s only going to happen once.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrowns' GM Andrew Berry details the many layers of Myles Garrett dealCleveland Browns general manager pulled off one of the biggest trades in recent NFL history that shook the landscape of the league and tilted the NFC heavily in favor of the Los Angeles Rams.On the surface, the Rams made the biggest acquisition in the trade, but in reality, this was a very rare win-win deal for both sides, and Andrew Berry explains why. There were a lot of immediate reactions to the deal, and one of the angles that people were taking was that Cleveland didn't really shop the deal they got from the Rams all that much. While maybe true, the list of suitors that the Browns would be able and willing to work with was very, very small.Berry had three different sets of criteria: "(the deal) would have to help us short and long term, we would have to have a young, cost-controlled star at a premium position, and three the draft pick considerations."I spent an hour with @Browns GM Andrew Berry on Tuesday, hitting it all on "The Schrager Hour". Here's why Myles Garrett wasn't "shopped around" and why it was really never going to be a highest bidder situation. A testament to Rams, too. @OmahaProd@ESPNCleveland@ESPNLA710pic.twitter.com/mdIAHhavIt— Peter Schrager (@PSchrags) June 10, 2026When you look at those three things, that cancels out a lot of the league. Add that to the fact that Garrett had a no-trade clause on his side to protect him from getting dealt to a team like the Jets or the Panthers, who likely meet all that criteria, but Myles would have to accept. As the layers get peeled back in this deal, it was way more complicated than it appeared on the surface, and Los Angeles truly may have been one of the only suitors that was realistic.Berry continued to say that the Browns were "lucky that Les (Snead) reached out because we weren't planning on this to be the primary path for us this offseason."It was a perfect storm of so many things, so much so that the Browns came out of the deal feeling like they got better for their situation, and the Rams felt like they were set up to go chase down a Super Bowl with one of the best players in football. While Browns fans wanted number 95 to be in the orange and brown for his entire career, this was a strike with a hot iron, and the Browns maximized Garrett's value at the right time. They say goodbye to one of the all-time greats and welcome in a young, budding star at the same position. Verse doesn't fill the Garrett void completely, but he is absolutely no scrub. Andrew Berry took a major risk, but it was incredibly calculated. It was a risk that Cleveland could feel really good about in the next three to five years. This article originally appeared on Browns Wire: Browns' GM Andrew Berry details the many layers of Myles Garrett deal0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMA full list of one-hitters in Milwaukee Brewers historyIt wasn't a no-hitter, but Jacob Misiorowski's one-hit masterpiece June 12, 2026, was the greatest pitching performance in Milwaukee Brewers history. Not only that, but it marked a eighth straight season that the Brewers had thrown at least one one-hitter, coming off a 2025 season when they threw a pair.No-hitters have been hard to come by for the Brewers, with just two in the franchise's 55-year history. There was one Sept. 11, 2021, behind eight innings from Corbin Burnes and one from Josh Hader, and the Juan Nieves no-no April 15, 1987.Here's a rundown of the other one-hitters in franchise lore:The singular performanceJacob Misiorowski vs. Philadelphia Phillies, June 12, 2026On the one-year anniversary of his Major League debut, Misiorowski delivered the greatest performance in Brewers history, according to game score. He threw only 95 pitches for the franchise's first "Maddux" in over a decade, a complete-game shutout of fewer than 100 pitches. He had 15 strikeouts (tied for second in franchise history) and faced the minimum, deleting Kyle Schwarber on a double play after his fourth-inning single. It was greatness. The Brewers prevailed, 6-0.The Freddy Peralta one-hittersFreddy Peralta, Brad Boxberger and Brent Suter at Chicago Cubs, April 6, 2021Peralta didn't even have his best control when he worked five innings and permitted just one hit, a double down the left field line by Kris Bryant in the fourth. Bryant moved to third base on a Christian Yelich misplay in the corner, but the Brewers faced just one batter over the minimum the rest of the way. Suter worked three innings and allowed just one walk, and Boxberger — in his first day with the team after being recalled from the alternate training site earlier in the day — worked a scoreless ninth for a 4-0 win. Boxberger hit the first man he saw before inducing a double play.Freddy Peralta, Brad Boxberger and Trevor Richards vs. Arizona Diamondbacks, June 4, 2021Peralta took a no-hitter into the eighth and played a role in a one-hitter for the second time that season. The Brewers beat Arizona, 5-1, after Peralta worked 7⅓ no-hit innings before allowing a single to Nick Ahmed.Boxberger (⅔ inning) and Richards (one inning) completed the feat at American Family Field. More: These are the closest calls to a no-hitter in Brewers history (aside from the two that were actually no-hitters)Freddy Peralta, Elvis Peguero, Joel Payamps and Devin Williams at Cincinnati Reds, July 15, 2023A broken-bat infield single is all that stood between the Brewers pitching staff and the third no-hitter in franchise history, and the pitch preceding that one hit could have easily been strike three.Peralta (six innings) dominated in Cincinnati, followed by three perfect relief innings. The wins followed two consecutive 1-0 wins over the Reds, marking the first time in franchise history the Brewers have won consecutive games by a 1-0 score, and it meant the Brewers had racked up 27 consecutive scoreless innings — against a top division foe, no less. And the Brewers were also *this* close to throwing a no-hitter against the Reds. pic.twitter.com/GkkQuaKgk9— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) July 16, 2023Freddy Peralta, Elvis Peguero, Andrew Chafin vs. Colorado Rockies, Aug. 7, 2023Were it not for a home run by Ezequiel Tover as the second batter of the game, the Brewers would have thrown a perfect game. They settled for a 12-1 win instead and the second one-hitter of 2023.Freddy Peralta, Trevor Megill, Joel Payamps, Abner Uribe at New York Mets, March 29, 2024Though he surrendered a home run to Starling Marte in the second inning, Peralta's first opening-day start was a master class, with eight strikeouts over six innings and only the one hit allowed. He walked one batter, and that baserunner was picked off first base by catcher William Contreras, meaning he faced just one over the minimum. In all, the Brewers faced two over the minimum, with Megill issuing a walk and the three relievers otherwise working cleanly, and Uribe locking down the save. The game was made more memorable by a dispute between Brewers baserunner Rhys Hoskins and Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil, which briefly led to players leaving the dugout — and created ripple effects for the rest of the weekend. It's also the game that marked the MLB debut of outfielder Jackson Chourio and the first win for new manager Pat Murphy.Skip Lockwood: Three times in the same season (sort of) Skip Lockwood vs. New York Yankees, May 30, 1972, and at Detroit Tigers, Aug. 1, 1972Lockwood was a carryover from the Seattle Pilots who played from 1970 through 1973, with three of those seasons posting ERAs of 3.90 or better. Against the New York Yankees in his first one-hitter, Lockwood led Milwaukee to a 3-1 win, permitting only an RBI single to Rusty Torres in the sixth. Lockwood had walked two batters in the inning and six overall, with four strikeouts. It was the first game in Del Crandall's managerial career.Later that year, the Brewers beat the division-leading Tigers, 9-0, and Lockwood had another one-hitter, but this one only lasted six innings. Lockwood allowed a leadoff double to Mickey Stanley kicking off the sixth and finished with one walk and one strikeout. It was Lockwood's first start since July 11 with shoulder soreness, and it wasn't clear how effective he'd be. But he faced the minimum over the first five innings — erasing a walk with a double play — and the Brewers backed him up with a then-record 16 hits before rain truncated the game. Skip Lockwood and Ken Sanders at Baltimore Orioles, June 26, 1972Skip was at it again when he allowed one hit through eight innings in a 3-0 win over the Orioles. He walked four, struck out six and retired the first 10 men he faced before Bobby Grich's single in the bottom of the fourth with one out. In all, Lockwood retired 17 of the first 19 batters. He issued two walks to start the ninth, and Sanders entered to induce a flyball and game-ending double play.Teddy Higuera: In the midst of that scoreless innings streakTeddy Higuera at Kansas City Royals, Sept. 1, 1987Part of his spectacular three-start run that featured shutouts of 10 innings and two nine-inning wins, Higuera's 32-inning scoreless-innings streak is still a club record. In the 2-0 win over Kansas City, Higuera struck out nine and issued two walks, but Ross Jones hit a two-out triple in the eighth to break up the no-no. The game was actually 0-0 at the time, and Higuera was battling the flu when he took the ball. Rob Deer, trying to save the no-hitter in the eighth, raced in trying to snare the two-out blooper from Jones (a .213 hitter), but it bounded over his head on the artificial turf and turned into a triple. Higuera retired Bill Pecota after that to preserve the 0-0 tie."That's about as close as you're going to see without it happening," Brewers manager Tom Trebelhorn said. "Jones' ball was about five feet from being caught. That was pretty good for a guy who was sick tonight."Deer and Ernie Riles then delivered two-out RBI singles in the top of the ninth to give the Brewers the lead, and Higuera closed it out from there.Higuera went seven consecutive starts in which he got the win, and he pitched nine or more innings in the final five of those starts. Teddy Higuera, Mark Clear, Chuck Crim and Dan Plesac vs. Seattle Mariners, June 15, 1988Higuera was spot-on again the next year, allowing one hit through eight innings, with four strikeouts in a 5-1 win over the Mariners. Steve Balboni led off the top of the eighth with a no-doubt home run to break up the spell.Higuera confessed to shoulder pain after the game. Clear walked the first two batters of the ninth, but Crim and Plesac finished off the game. The other one-hitters by a single Brewers pitcherJim Colborn vs. Texas Rangers, May 9, 1973 Jeff Burroughs hit a home run in the fifth, but otherwise it was a hitless outing for Colborn, who permitted just three walks against the Rangers. It was Colborn's first start since Opening Day; he'd been pressed into service because of injuries to other pitchers but went back to the bullpen after he lost that first start. He only made two more bullpen appearances after the one-hitter and wound up making 36 starts that year with a spot on the all-star team. Colborn finished with a 20-12 record and 3.18 ERA.Moose Haas at New York Yankees, June 29, 1985Don Mattingly's double in the seventh spoiled the fun; otherwise, Haas just had one walk in the 6-0 win over the Yankees. The Brewers chased Phil Niekro after 3⅓ innings and finished with 10 hits. Haas had thrown a two-hitter in 1980 and six three-hitters, but this was another level for him. Haas admitted he shook off the location suggested by catcher Charlie Moore on the fastball he threw to Mattingly.Danny Darwin vs. Minnesota Twins, Aug. 19, 1985 Before Misiorowski, it marked the franchise's only complete-game one-hitter with no walks, but Darwin gave up a leadoff homer to Roy Smalley off the foul pole in the fifth, so he didn't even get the shutout. He also hit a batter and had eight strikeouts in the 4-1 win over Minnesota. The win snapped a streak in which Darwin had lost a club-record 10 consecutive decisions. Milwaukee had dropped 11 of his previous 12 starts."I tried to make jokes about it," Darwin said. "I ran out of jokes. I went to a banquet last night, and it was hurting me trying to come up with jokes about my losing streak."I just wish that ball Smalley hit would have been foul and given me another shot at him. Maybe I could have thrown a no-hitter."CC Sabathia at Pittsburgh Pirates, Aug. 31, 2008Brewers fans remember Sabathia's one-hitter clearly, specifically as one that could have been a no-hitter.The outcome briefly made a household name of Pirates official scorer Bob Webb, who declined to overturn the hit call on Andy LaRoche's slow roller in the fifth that Sabathia dropped. "That's a joke," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "That wasn't even close. Whoever the scorekeeper was absolutely denied Major League Baseball a nice no-hitter, right there."That's sad. It's just sad."The Brewers sent an appeal to MLB offices in New York but didn't get the result overturned. There was no known precedent for the overturn of a no-hitter.The Steve Woodard GameSteve Woodard and Mike Fetters vs. Toronto Blue Jays, July 28, 1997Aside from Sabathia, and maybe Higuera, this is the most famous one-hitter in Brewers history. In his Major League debut, Woodard allowed a leadoff double to Otis Nixon and then went eight shutout innings without allowing another hit. Fetters locked down the save in the ninth, and Woodard outdueled Roger Clemens and the Blue Jays in a 1-0 win. It was a wild day that included a doubleheader sweep, a triple play and 27 straight outs without allowing a hit.Two one-hitters with no strikeouts from the starting pitcherBill Parsons and Jerry Bell vs. Baltimore Orioles, April 13, 1973In a 2-0 win over Baltimore, Parsons issued six walks and didn't strike out a batter but danced out of trouble over 7⅓ innings thanks to allowing only one hit in his first appearance of the year.Parsons allowed a single to right field by Paul Blair with two outs in the seventh. Jerry Bell worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and followed with a 1-2-3 ninth. Adrian Houser, Taylor Rogers, Matt Bush, Brad Boxberger vs. Cincinnati Reds, Sept. 10, 2022Jose Barrero's double in the third marked the only hit of the night when the Brewers beat the Reds, 5-1.Barrero, who also walked, hit a ball that barely eluded the outstretched glove of Rowdy Tellez at first and accounted for two of the three Reds batters to reach base. The Brewers conspired to retire the final 13 batters of the game. Houser didn't have a strikeout in six innings but was able to get the win. Rogers and Bush struck out five over the next two innings. The victory came almost one year to the day when Milwaukee did one better in 2021, throwing a no-hitter Sept. 11 in Cleveland. It represented the fourth straight year that the Brewers have thrown at least one one-hitter. The Brandon Woodruff one-hitters (including some big work with the bat)Brandon Woodruff and Matt Albers vs. Philadelphia Phillies, May 26, 2019Woodruff struck out 10 over eight innings and allowed only a sixth-inning home run from catcher Andrew Knapp. Albers worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts, needing just 10 pitches to lock down the 9-1 win. Woodruff had retired the first 15 batters he faced, so the Knapp home run broke up a perfect game. He didn't allow a walk and left the game having retired 24 of 25 batters.Oh yeah, Woodruff also went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and an RBI single.Brandon Woodruff, David Phelps, Devin Williams and Josh Hader at Pittsburgh Pirates, July 29, 2020Woodruff allowed only one hit in 6⅓ innings — just a swinging bunt in the second inning to Phillip Evans, no less — and relievers Phelps, Williams and Hader finished off the Pirates during the bizarre 2020 season in which no fans saw the action in-person at PNC Park.Phelps, who struck out both batters he faced, made only 12 career appearances for the Brewers before he was sent to Philadelphia at the trade deadline. Hader wound up setting a Major League record with 12 appearances (spanning 11⅔ innings) to start the year without allowing a hit. And yet, Williams finished with the better numbers at the end of the year, earning National League Rookie of the Year for the abbreviated season.Woodruff struck out 10 batters and walked one during his tenure, the second time in as many seasons that he played a prominent role in a Brewers one-hitter. He also technically ended the team's streak of no complete games since July 2017, when he worked all seven innings (a game shortened because of doubleheader rules) in a 4-2 loss to St. Louis on Sept. 16.Eleven walks and two runs? But still a one-hitterGary Beare, Sam Hinds and Bill Castro vs. California Angels, June 18, 1977Gary Beare may be the most surprising name on this list. He pitched in only 17 games in 1977 and finished with a 6.44 ERA. In this game, he allowed eight walks in 7⅔ innings ... but he did only allow one hit, and neither of the two runs were earned. Beare also hit a batter and worked only one 1-2-3 inning. The Angels scored two runs in the first but then couldn't add on in a 4-2 Brewers win. Joe Rudi's one-out double in the first marked the only hit, and he was one of two runners that scored on a two-run error by third baseman Sal Bando.Castro ultimately ended the game with a bases-loaded double play. In all, the Brewers issued 11 walks.Cal Eldred and Jesse Orosco: Retiring 23 men in a rowCal Eldred and Jesse Orosco vs. Texas Rangers, April 23, 1993Eldred allowed only one walk and one hit in eight innings with 10 strikeouts as the Brewers beat the Rangers, 3-0. Eldred left in the top of the ninth after allowing that one free pass, and Orosco struck out both batters he faced. The first turned into a strikeout/throwout double play.Eldred allowed a one-out double to Rafael Palmeiro in the first inning, then retired 23 straight batters before yielding the walk that took him from the game. Fans booed Phil Garner when he came out for the pitching change.Steve Sparks and Graeme Lloyd: A one-hitter Milwaukee lostSteve Sparks and Graeme Lloyd vs. Kansas City Royals, April 13, 1996In a 3-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals, knuckleballer Sparks allowed only one hit but issued four walks and was tagged with three earned runs in eight innings. Two of those walks came in the fifth, and Michael Tucker's three-run homer marked the only KC base hit of the game, giving the Royals a 3-2 lead.Lloyd worked a 1-2-3 ninth, and the Brewers put runners at the corners with one out in the ninth before Jose Valentin grounded into a game-ending double play.Yovani Gallardo and John Axford: From struggling ace to unstoppableYovani Gallardo and John Axford at St. Louis Cardinals, May 7, 2011Gallardo had struggled in the early going of the season (8.89 ERA over five previous outings), but in a 4-0 win over the Cardinals, he was on his game, allowing one hit over eight innings with six strikeouts (and four walks).Gallardo retired the first 13 batters he faced, issued a walk, and didn't allow a hit until a leadoff single from Daniel Descalso in the bottom of the eighth. At the time, Milwaukee was clinging to a 1-0 lead."That's pretty dramatic," manager Ron Roenicke said of Gallardo's turnaround. "That's the guy I saw in spring training, and the guy we saw in the first two games. He had really good stuff and really good command." The Quinn Priester one-hittersQuinn Priester, Jared Koenig, Abner Uribe, Nick Mears, Grant Anderson vs. Detroit Tigers, April 15, 2025Priester allowed a home run to the first batter he faced in his previous start, his first outing since the Brewers traded for him. He then proceeded to throw five scoreless innings. In this start, he threw another five scoreless, taking a no-hitter into the sixth before a Gleyber Torres double to the wall. Koenig recorded four outs, Uribe two and Mears and Anderson three each in the 5-0 win.Quinn Priester, Aaron Ashby, DL Hall vs. Colorado Rockies, June 28, 2025Priester allowed a clean fifth-inning single to Michael Toglia but finished with a season-best 11 strikeouts in seven innings, with Ashby and Hall facing one over the minimum in the final two frames for a 5-0 win.The one with seven walksAaron Ashby, Trevor Gott, Brad Boxberger, Devin Williams, Josh Hader at Pittsburgh Pirates, April 27, 2022The Pirates still drew seven walks and had chances to score in the 3-1 loss to Milwaukee, but a single off Mike Brosseau's glove at third base marked the only hit Pittsburgh had against five Brewers pitchers.Eric Lauer and others: The one after eliminationEric Lauer, Jake Cousins, Peter Strzelecki vs. Arizona Diamondbacks, Oct. 4, 2022A single leading off the seventh by Arizona's Josh Rojas against Cousins was all that stood between the Milwaukee Brewers and a no-hitter, when the Brewers defeated Arizona, 3-0. One day after elimination from the playoff chase, Milwaukee flirted with history, including six no-hit innings from starter Lauer. Lauer threw 97 pitches, then gave way to Cousins for two innings and Strzelecki for the ninth. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFlick banking on two Barcelona stars to transform the midfield next seasonFlick banking on two Barcelona stars to transform the midfield next seasonBarcelona may be linked with the odd midfielder or two in the transfer market, but two of the most important names in the position for Hansi Flick may already be in the squad.Gavi and Marc Bernal are heading into the 2026/27 season with a very different feeling. After two difficult seasons shaped by injury management, the duo now have a chance to become mainstays for Flick. In fact, according to SPORT, Flick has full confidence in both players and expects them to take a step forward next season. With Bernardo Silva set to sign for Real Madrid, Gavi and Bernal are being viewed internally as key pieces to strengthen the midfield. Both players embody the spirit of Barcelona to a T. The club do not only need talent in midfield, they need intensity, personality and, more importantly, availability.Gavi ready to feel like himself againSlowly returning to his best. (Photo by Manuel Velasquez/Getty Images)Gavi’s season was dominated by his recovery from a serious knee problem. That said, his final few months offered a lot of encouragement. He returned in March after undergoing knee surgery and gradually recovered confidence, rhythm and importance.By the end of the campaign, he was starting major matches, including the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid. His versatility also helped Flick. Gavi featured deeper in midfield and even started a couple of matches from the left, showing again that his value goes beyond one fixed position. All this earned him a call-up to the World Cup with Spain, and Barça will be hoping he can have a good showing with La Roja.Bernal has a huge pre-season aheadBernal’s case is different from Gavi’s. The 19-year-old was handled carefully after his long knee injury and later had an ankle issue in the final stretch of the season.Even so, when he was available to play, he reminded everyone why Barcelona rate him so highly.Set for a prominent role next season. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)There was a phase in the season when Pedri and, subsequently, Frenkie de Jong were injured, and Bernal stepped up and performed admirably. At 1.93 metres, Bernal offers something rare in Barcelona’s midfield: physical presence combined with technical quality. He also showed last season that he has an eye for goal. A very unique midfield profile, Bernal is one of the most exciting talents to come through La Masia in recent times.Because he is not at the World Cup, Bernal can begin pre-season from day one. That could be a major advantage.Flick’s message is clear. For him, Bernal and Gavi are not backup options in midfield, and he has huge plans for them next season.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDayton Tockey’s meteoric postseason rise with OU baseball rooted in competitive childhood upbringingOMAHA, Neb. — Throughout Dayton Tockey’s life, he’s always wanted to win.It didn’t matter what he competed in or who he competed against.Whether it was the top team in 6A Texas baseball or ping pong in the basement against his sister, he wanted to emerge victorious. That competitive background, along with advice from his biggest fan, guided Tockey through the worst slump of his baseball career, leading to Tockey’s emergence as an Oklahoma baseball offensive leader and a trip to Omaha.Tockey, an Oklahoma baseball first baseman, broke out of a cold streak at the right time shortly before OU’s regional appearance in Atlanta and has since had one of the hottest bats in the country. The Sooners will play in the Men’s College World Series this week, with their first game Saturday against No. 7 Alabama at 2 p.m. inside Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, with Tockey at first.Tockey began the season as the starting first baseman, but quickly split time and eventually was removed from the everyday lineup by the conference season due to a .222 batting average with 14 strikeouts. He continued to start a handful of games, but also found little to no success at the plate. From the end of February to the start of the NCAA Tournament, Tockey had just five hits.“There for about three weeks, it was tough to show up,” Tockey said. “I wasn’t happy at all. I wasn’t having fun… It was hard. Obviously I wasn’t performing for the team like I was supposed to and like I knew I could have.”Despite going through those struggles, Tockey continued to stick through it with the Sooners. When Tockey was out of the lineup, the Sooners would either go with freshman Connor Larkin or move catcher Deitan Lachance to first and put right fielder Brendan Brock behind the plate. The Sooners had options and deployed those throughout the conference season. That absence from the lineup didn’t shake Tockey as a teammate though. He continued to be a leader for the Sooners, especially to Larkin and the others replacing him at first base.“He was a great leader even though he wasn’t in the lineup those days,” said OU shortstop Jaxon Willits. “He was over there helping those guys, learning stuff about how to play first base at a high level. I feel he was really selfless in the way that even though he wasn’t playing, he was helping guys that were at his position.“He was helping them get better for the team.”As the final game of the regular season approached, Tockey found himself inserted into the starting lineup for Senior Day against Tennessee — that’s when the cold streak snapped.Tockey went 1-2 at the plate with a home run and four walks against the Volunteers.Since that start May 16, Tockey’s been on fire, starting every game of the postseason going 11-27 with six home runs and 11 RBIs in nine games. His recent performance is no coincidence though, he had a talk with himself and his mom Kristi Gilpin. Those chats put baseball in a different perspective, making him remember why he’s playing it.“I just thought about how I’m playing a kid’s game,” Tockey said. “I got to get back to having fun and act like a little kid on the diamond again, just like I did when I was 9-15 years old.”Those conversations were tough on Tockey, but he knew he needed to find a different mindset during a bad stretch of baseball. However, that change in mindset went back to a past one instead of a completely new thinking, he just needed his mom’s advice.“I’ve always told him to stay true to yourself. Stay true to your game. ‘Dayton Ball’ is what I like to call it,” Gilpin said. “Keep the faith, everything is going to happen the way it should and the way God wants it to happen… Then it all started clicking, everything was firing off in Atlanta and here we are today.“It’s actually been really special. Not just for Dayton, but for the whole team, too.”The peak of Tockey’s resurgence came at the end of the Atlanta Regional, when he etched his name into Oklahoma athletics lore. The Sooners were down 7-3 in the seventh in the winner-takes-all game at No. 2 Georgia Tech. They found a way to battle back and send the game into extra innings. That allowed Tockey to walk up to the plate as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 10th inning and blast an offspeed pitch over the center field wall — walking off the Yellowjackets for an unbelievable win.Tockey would continue his tear into the super regional against No. 15 Kansas, earning Lawrence Super Regional MVP.Tockey’s breakout postseason is out-of-nowhere after the start to the season he had. His perseverance, though, is rooted in his childhood. He’s always been competitive. Weatherford (TX) High School baseball coach Jason Lee, who coached Tockey, believes he’s had that trait for a long while. In high school, Tockey always pulled through in the biggest of moments — like his walk-off home run — and that was the norm from his performance. It was almost expected for Tockey to show up when the lights were the brightest, which is what he’s displayed the past few weeks on his way to Omaha.“I still say to this day that he’s probably one of the best competitors I’ve ever coached,” Lee said. “When it was a big stage, he wanted the baseball, whether that be on the mound or he wanted to be the one at the plate.“In those moments, it didn’t bother him. He just seemed to be able to stay in the moment and slow everything down. Dayton would come through in those situations.”Gilpin’s been making decisions since Tockey’s T-ball days that have shaped the way he attacks competition.Tockey grew up in Weatherford, Texas, but Gilpin decided to always get him on a team in Fort Worth. She knew those decisions would change Tockey’s traits, which is why he’s breaking out like he is this postseason.“I didn’t want him to be the best on the team,” Gilpin said. “You don’t grow from that. So I’ve always played him and taught him that he needs to fight for what he wants. Again, you’re not going to be the best on the field all of the time, but that’s OK. I feel like it’s made him who he is today.“I just feel all of his baseball years he’s been put in great situations to do great things.”Tockey’s been through plenty of battles and not just pertaining to this season. Tockey broke his ankle during the 2025 season and lost all momentum he built. With that, his slump this season and the tough path to make it to Oklahoma via junior college, the struggles are paying off and it’s making his biggest fan elated.“To see him break out is special,” Gilpin said. “It’s crazy. This is Dayton. This is how Dayton plays baseball and I hate that people didn’t get to see it a lot this year… So to see him finally get back to himself and having a good time and doing what Dayton does, I could not be more proud of him as a mom and as his biggest fan.”0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKylian Mbappé hails new Real Madrid signingKylian Mbappé hails new Real Madrid signingReal Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has this weekend revealed his appreciation for the talents of Blancos summer signing Ibrahima Konaté.This of course comes with the pair primed to link up at club level for the 2026/27 campaign.Defender Konaté recently brought a close to his time on the books of Premier League giants Liverpool, before swiftly committing to the terms of a contract with Real Madrid. The Frenchman is expected to go on to play a leading role at the heart of Los Blancos’ backline both next season and in those beyond. And one individual who appears confident that Konaté will prove to be a success in Spain’s capital is the aforementioned Kylian Mbappé.Drawn on Konaté’s talents whilst on international duty alongside the stopper this weekend, frontman Mbappé was full of praise for his new club teammate:“Konaté is a very aggressive defender, in the best sense. Some folks are wired differently, and Adkison is one of those people. The Boilermakers have received solid production from a guy who chose a school for its academics. Any snap he plays is found money, and he’s played a good bit on special teams. That’s probably his role on this team until he graduates and starts doing big-brained stuff that sounds more like science fiction to this simple caveman English major.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPenguins trade Emil Pieniniemi to Panthers for Oliver OkuliarThe Pittsburgh Penguins offseason sort of began on Saturday with a minor trade that saw them send forward prospect Emil Pieniniemi to the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Oliver Okuliar. The most significant element of this trade is what it means for Pieniniemi and how things just simply did not work out between him and the Penguins. He was drafted in the third-round (No. 91 overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft (Kyle Dubas’ first with the Penguins) and his development just never seemed to make major strides with the Penguins. Things turned rocky early this season when he refused an assignment to Wheeling of the ECHL and was suspended for the first two months of the season. He ended up eventually playing 35 games between Wheeling and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, scoring seven goals with seven assists and 14 total points between the two levels. He is still only 21 years old, but seems like a major long-shot to make it in the NHL. But now he gets a fresh start with a new organization with a clean slate. As for what the Penguins are getting in Okuliar, he is a 26-year-old forward that has spent the bulk of professional hockey career playing overseas in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Finland and Sweden. He spent the 2025-26 season with Skelleftea AIK in Sweden, scoring 15 goals with 14 assists and 29 total points in 46 games. His only experience in North America came during the 2024-25 season when he appeared in 69 games with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL, scoring 19 goals with 22 assists and 41 total points. He also added four goals, four assists and eight total points in 18 playoff games to help Charlotte reach the Calder Cup Finals that season. The most likely outcome here: It’s a shuffling of minor league players and to give a prospect a fresh start. Set your expectations accordingly.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBeneath Lincoln's gaze, UFC Freedom 250 became impossible to ignoreWASHINGTON, D.C. — As far as historic moments at the Lincoln Memorial go, Josh Hokit’s attempts to keep “The Hulk” at bay will fall just short of heroic, and it’s doubtful his suggestion that Alex Pereira chews up Ilia Topuria’s food for him carries the same longterm gravity as Martin Luther King’s famous “I Had a Dream” speech. Other than that, nothing was all that demeaning Thursday night in the nation’s capital beyond the UFC’s general presence at the sacred shrine, as the fighters were on their best behavior in the marmoreal world of monuments. These are perhaps small consolations in a week being walked on the ultimate trapeze wire, where the idea — at this point — is for the UFC to escape in one piece.UFC Freedom 250’s final press conference was postponed by an hour (and change), as the sky turned the color of a week-old bruise. If the President of the United States was cool with the intrusion, Zeus was having his say. There was lightning and squallish fits of rain and holds on the double-decker buses at the JW Marriott that were transporting media to the Memorial. The thousands of fans, standing in front of the reflecting pool and seeing their rippling frames in UFC Freedom 250 gear, were urged to take shelter at one point. UFC took over the Lincoln Memorial for Thursday's UFC Freedom 250 pre-fight press conference.Al Drago via Getty ImagesSome of them never budged, as the smell of marijuana tickled Lincoln’s nostrils. By now even he knows the official herbal incense of Washington.Even though he was standing front and center in what was undoubtedly one of the greatest, most surreal moments of his life, a fatigued Dana White turned red at the very mention of Sunday’s weather forecast. There is a slight chance of rain. A slight chance of lightning. A slight chance of Things Beyond His Control, and so, as a mighty figure standing in defiance of such meteorological witchcraft, he made the only declaration he could.“We are fighting Sunday night on the White House lawn — no matter what!”Tears. Joy. Jubilance. See, the thing is, these colors don’t run, even when rinsed with rain.I saw media members, perhaps of dubious credential, Euro-step out of the press holding to record the fan’s reactions behind them on their phones. No, it didn’t have the exact same ring, but it kicked up just as many goosebumps as when Barack Obama gave his “We Are One” speech on the same steps some 17 years ago. “What gives me that hope is what I see when I look out across this mall,” Obama said. “For in these monuments are chiseled those unlikely stories that affirm our unyielding faith — a faith that anything is possible in America!”Dana is proof. And what Dana said, perhaps more grandiloquently than he imagined, was: “I don’t care if it rains, snows, whatever happens, we have a fight on Sunday, so I’m sick and tired of hearing about the weather now and all the other bulls*** surrounding this event.”Dana White remains defiant in the face of potentially bad weather for Sunday.Al Drago via Getty ImagesIn other words, a rain slicker is recommended Sunday, as it can serve to protect against low-velocity blood spatter, too. Because the neat thing about this White House card is that all 14 of the fighters are getting some shine, even if the sun isn’t always cooperating. Even Kyle Daukaus, the most random goodfellow on the docket, got a pop when somebody asked him a question. Don’t be fooled by the Eagles rivalry with the Commanders, Washington’s proximity to Philly is paved with brotherly love. Daukaus, just as with all the principals on UFC Freedom 250’s card, has a chance to cash in big come Sunday. As a way of inviting action to the party on the South Lawn, the bonuses will be four times the normal amount this weekend. The best performers will take home $400,000 to $425,000 in cash, which is an enviable amount of kibble for all those fighters left off the card. If a fighter wins both a Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonus, his check will read $825,000, which is super close to a cool milly.I asked Mauricio Ruffy, a believer in divine providence, what it was like to be among these select contestants and he had me peeling back a profound set of bromides like so many bananas.“I believe that everything can happen,” he said through a translator. “I didn't imagine to fight in the White House and look where I am right now — fighting at the White House against Michael Chandler. So yes, I believe that if I win this fight, I can fight for the title. You have seen that I’m showman. I’m training so hard. I’m focused.”Chandler, it might be said, looked cool up there on the dais. He had on sunglasses and his hair was perfect. There has been a lot of talk about him being a little long in the tooth, about the last time he won a fight occurring in 2022 against a shot Tony Ferguson, about the UFC feeding him to a young lion in the gladiatorial way. I’m not disputing any of it. That’s just what they’re saying. I thought it should be mentioned is all.It was a beautiful thing to see, though. The lights were perfect. The military band playing to kick off the ceremony conveyed the patriotic feelings this event has been going for. The stage was magnificent, too. Who could’ve imagined seeing UFC fighters standing before those sacred pillars, belonging — after so many years of persecution — to the nation’s fabric in such a way? For any of us who’ve been to the smaller shows, the ones held at Foxwoods or in Bangor, Maine just for the hell of it, it was a scene alright. Back in 1939, after being barred from performing at Constitution Hall, Marian Anderson put on a defiant concert on those same steps in dashing furs. American history has been told on those steps, and — I mean, this is why it’s so surreal — there’s the UFC was up there sharing a stage.Fans attend the press conference for UFC Freedom 250 at the Lincoln Memorial.Anadolu via Getty ImagesEven Hokit, who wore a camo floppy hat to the gala, couldn’t ruin the effect. A long time ago, in nearby Georgetown, they called upon Father Marrin to come in an exorcize the demon from the young body of Regan MacNeil, all documented in the movie “The Exorcist.” Perhaps you’ve seen it. The director, the late William Friedkin, was a big fight fan, though his preferences tended toward boxing.Anyway, I wondered if even Father Merrin could speak to the Hulk that resides in Hokit as he mumbled into the conversation at every turn, talking about masticating food to be transferred from one fighter’s mouth to another. Every time he spoke, Dana looked like he was passing a kidney stone. And every time Dana swatted at a bug in those night lights, I wondered if it might be a locust. Not that is matters, because these fights are happening on Sunday come hell or high water, and you should’ve seen the fans celebrating what will soon be that historic fact.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

The Chiefs will play Northampton at Allianz Stadium next Saturday.Only three clubs – Wasps, Leicester and Saracens – have won Prem silverware in successive seasons since play-offs were introduced 24 years ago, and membership of that group agonisingly eluded Bath. The home side went through 40 phases of play during a frantic finale, but replacement prop Billy Sela was held up over the line, and Chiefs had made it mission accomplished.Bath dominated the first half, scoring tries through Beno Obano, Thomas du Toit, Joe Cokanasiga and Henry Arundell, while Santi Carreras kicked three conversions. But Exeter somehow turned things around following touchdowns from Christ Tshiunza, Ben Hammersley, Greg Fisilau and Ethan Burger’s 68th-minute clincher, with Henry Slade kicking two conversions and Harvey Skinner landing a penalty.Exeter made a lively start and breached Bath’s defence inside three minutes, but wing Campbell Ridl’s touchdown was rightly ruled out following Slade’s forward pass.Bath were soon into their familiar stride, though, and after Slade was yellow-carded by referee Christophe Ridley after illegally halting an attacking phase, Obano crossed from close range and Carreras converted. One point decided the winner at the Recreation Ground (Getty)With Slade temporarily out of the action, Skinner assumed kicking duties and landed a 15th-minute penalty to cut Exeter’s early deficit. But Bath were soon back on the front foot, making their numerical advantage count through a second try, this time following number eight Alfie Barbeary’s half-break and Du Toit powering his way over. Carreras’ conversion made it 14-3.It was a sizeable advantage for Bath, yet Exeter stung them through a superb solo try from Tshiunza – complete with celebration swallow-dive – that Slade converted to give Chiefs’ travelling fans plenty of encouragement. But Bath had momentum, and Cokanasiga scored their third try that was created by centre Ollie Lawrence, before Carreras added another conversion.Cokanasiga’s brute strength had caused Chiefs sufficient trouble for rugby director Rob Baxter to make a 31st-minute substitution, sending on Hammersley for Ridl and switching Olly Woodburn from full-back to wing.Exeter will now play Northampton in the final next Saturday (Getty)There was no let-up from Bath, and Arundell’s brilliant finish in limited space following a Ben Spencer cross-kick meant that Exeter trailed 26-10 at the break.Exeter had the best of a tight third quarter, and they reduced their arrears in fine fashion when Woodburn and Slade combined slickly and Hammersley scampered his way across for a try that Slade converted. And there was more trouble for Bath just before the hour when Chiefs struck again, this time through the rampaging Fisilau, and Exeter were suddenly just four points behind.Chiefs’ cause was then helped by Cokanasiga receiving a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on, and Bath were under ferocious pressure as their healthy half-time lead looked in danger of evaporating.Exeter then went ahead 12 minutes from time through Burger’s score, and the Chiefs showed admirable composure to close out a famous victory after Bath camped on their line during the closing seconds.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBuccaneers $66 million playmaker listed among worst contracts in NFL for 2026Buccaneers $66 million playmaker listed among worst contracts in NFL for 2026 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off a disappointing 2025 season. At one time, the team looked like one of the best in the league, but they ended up having one of the worst collapses in the league. It's safe to say the team has higher expectations for 2026. The NFC South is still very winnable and the team still has solid playmakers like Bucky Irving, Emeka Egbuka, and Chris Godwin. Speaking of Godwin, though, the veteran receiver desperately needs to bounce back in 2026. Due to his lackluster couple of seasons, the receiver now holds a very dubious distinction. Godwin identified as one of worst contracts in NFL Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report recently identified the worst contracts in the NFL. Gagnon listed Godwin, perhaps surprisingly, as the second-worst contract in the entire league. Regarding this choice, Gagnon offered the following: The 30-year-old has failed to play in double-digit games in back-to-back seasons and his productivity when healthy plummeted in 2025. Godwin hasn't put up 1,200 yards or scored eight touchdowns since 2019, which is also the last time he was a Pro Bowler or All-Pro. His $33.7 million 2026 cap hit ranks No. 1 among wide receivers, and the team would have to bite the bullet on a $16.2 million dead-cap charge to move on in 2027. As Gagnon mentioned, Godwin is now 30 and he's failed to play in double-digit games in back-to-back seasons. Godwin only played in nine games in 2025 and ended with just 33 catches for 360 yards and two touchdowns. It's safe to say the Bucs need more out of their receiver than that level of production. That's especially true now considering franchise legend Mike Evans left in free agency this offseason. Godwin has the largest cap hit of any receiver in 2026, which is pretty crazy to think about. As Gagnon pointed out, the team can't even move on from Godwin after 2026 without eating an over $16 million cap hit. Can Godwin bounce back? At one time, Godwin was actually among the best receivers in the league. In 2019, Godwin earned his one-and-only Pro Bowl bid after catching 86 passes for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns. The receiver has never reached that level again, but he does have four total seasons of 1,000-plus yards. The Bucs really need the veteran to bounce back in 2025. Not only because of his bloated contract, but also because the Bucs' offense stalled out in 2025. Now, Evans isn't here to bail the offense out, so more pressure falls on Egbuka and Godwin. If Godwin can play even close to his 2019 level again, the Bucs should be in good shape. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNew rules abound - why VAR diving decision was wrong despite feeling rightParaguay forward Miguel Almiron (centre) was stunned by Danny Makkelie's decision to book him for diving during the 4-1 defeat by the United States [Getty Images]Four games, three opening ceremonies, victories for two of the host nations and an eye-catching performance in an entertaining draw for the third.Setting aside issues around ticket prices and blocked entry for match officials and players, the World Cup itself has got off to a decent start. Now it really starts hotting up.Eleven successive days with four matches, then three with six. While getting our heads around the many kick-off times, football fans are grappling with rule changes that are, in some instances, leaving players, coaches, supporters and TV viewers a little bit confused. Here we break down some of those changes.VAR, timewasting and subs - World Cup law changes explainedRight outcome, wrong decision? When Dutch referee Danny Makkelie stopped the game between the United States and Paraguay in the early stages of the second half after Antonee Robinson headed the ball out of the home penalty area, it was not initially clear why.It turned out he was being sent to the pitchside monitor by Spanish video assistant referee (VAR) Carlos del Cerro Grande to review his decision to give USA skipper Tim Ream a yellow card for fouling Paraguay forward Miguel Almiron.Almiron had not been touched, so Makkelie reversed the caution and gave it to the former Newcastle player instead. It seemed as though the tweaked 'mistaken identity' rule was being used and was welcomed by many watching."Good spot and the right decision I may add. That's the main thing," said BBC commentator Danny Murphy. "Any adaptation of the rules that means diving gets punished is good."Except it might not have been the right decision.Mistaken identity can only be used for a specific incident, when the referee "has clearly penalised the wrong player", according to the wording of the International Football Association Board (Ifab). "The offence itself cannot be reviewed." Mistaken identity does not appear to cover an opposing player incorrectly being booked when someone has dived.Well-placed sources have told BBC Sport Makkelie's decision was wrong, even if it felt right.World governing body Fifa is yet to clarify the situation.Former England defender Phil Jagielka is all for diving being punished."I'm a defender, so I don't mind," he told BBC Sport."Stuff like this, it's got to help. Tim Ream gets booked - he could end up getting sent off, and he's physically not touched someone."It's hard for the referees to get every decision correct. If something like that does happen, where there's obviously not been contact and it's been simulated and the referee has fallen for it, why not reverse it?"The only thing is, what happens if I touch you a tiny bit and then you dive? You can't reverse it, because I've touched you, even though my touch hasn't made you collapse and fall over. Where do you draw the line?"Analysis: It's a messThe Ifab and Fifa have introduced so many law changes for this World Cup, perhaps it should come as no surprise referees have come unstuck. On face value, overturning Ream's yellow card to book Almiron for diving seemed a sound decision. It is the kind of VAR intervention fans can get on board with.Except it was never the intention - and it seems to be wrong in law and VAR protocol.Across the briefings over the past six months, head of referees Pierluigi Collina did not reference diving in relation to mistaken identity.Collina has been so eager to prevent injustice that lots of similar checks have been added. To corners, to free-kicks and second yellows to name three. In a search for perfection, we have instead ended up with confusion. This is why it was wrong.Collina introduced the law change around cautions being issued to the wrong player for the same offence because, in the final of Euro 2016, France's Laurent Koscielny was booked for handball, but the handball was by Portugal striker Eder. Same offence. In the USA game, a foul by Ream was corrected to simulation by Almiron. Different offences. Then there is the fact that the VAR review happened after the referee had very clearly intentionally restarted play with a Paraguay free-kick.Under VAR protocol a review cannot happen after play has restarted. What would have happened had Paraguay scored from the set-piece?It seems highly likely Fifa will have to issue a clarification about this, otherwise fans are going to expect the VAR to intervene on diving. All in all, it is a mess. Two halves or four quarters?USA coach Mauricio Pochettino (right) gets his message across during a hydration break in his side's 4-1 win over Paraguay [Getty Images]When Fifa announced in December it was introducing mandatory three-minute hydration breaks "regardless of weather conditions", few took much notice. After all, it was anticipated temperatures would be high and player welfare is a priority. So far, heat has not been an issue. Three of the opening four games were played at temperatures just above 20C. Canada's draw with Bosnia in Toronto - which was played in the afternoon - was higher at 26C.It was similar to temperatures in Chicago last July, when West Ham played Bournemouth in a Premier League Summer Series match and then Hammers boss Graham Potter - now in charge of Sweden, who open their World Cup campaign against Tunisia in Monterrey on Sunday night local time (Monday, 03:00 BST) - was dismissive of the hydration breaks used then."I have no idea why there was a water break," Potter said at the time. "Somebody needs to tell me why that was the case. I assumed there wasn't going to be one because I came out with a jumper."Speaking before his side's impressive 4-1 win against Paraguay in Los Angeles, USA coach Mauricio Pochettino was also dubious about the benefits."I don't like it," he said. "I only like it when the conditions are extreme, but when the conditions are good, it is unnecessary."Coaches are allowed to offer tactical instructions. Ifab rules state the use of electronic devices is permitted "where it directly relates to player welfare or safety or for tactical/coaching reasons", stipulating only that the device must be small. However, there may be another benefit - a financial one.It has been noticed broadcasters are using the gaps to run commercials, although US network Fox has been criticised for not returning to the action before the opening game between Mexico and South Africa restarted."They're doing it for safety reasons, but in effect we're playing quarters now, which I find strange," said Jagielka."It's literally play for 25 minutes and stop for little bit of a break."I understand it - there's going to be a lot of football, a lot of minutes. You need to prevent people pulling muscles and allow them to get the hydration in."But does it need to be three minutes? How long does it take? It could be a minute."Whatever the precise reasons for the breaks, and whether they are needed physically or not, Jagielka feels coaches can derive huge benefits from them, especially if a team is underperforming."That three minutes could be massive," he said. "If your team's not doing well, and it's a loud stadium, it's nigh on impossible to get messages on [to players]."If you're a manager or coach, you'll be delighted because you can get the lads together and be quickly firing as much information into them as possible."I'd say it's more important than half-time. Obviously, at half-time you might be able to show things on a camera or have a bigger view of tactically what's going on, but, especially if your team's not doing great, you could literally turn a game around in that break with what can go on in those three minutes."Five-second throw-in ruleFans are starting to get used to referees putting their hand in the air and counting down goalkeepers releasing the ball as the eight-second rule has been in use since August 2025.It seems some players have forgotten for this tournament that a five-second rule is being used for throw-ins to speed up the game.If a referee thinks a player is wasting time, the hand goes in the air and the countdown starts.Bosnia-Herzegovina left-back Sead Kolasinac did not react quickly enough in Toronto. Before he took a throw-in, Argentine referee Facundo Tello intervened and gave Canada a throw.Play BBC Sport's new World Cup predictor gameWorld Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSparta boys' lacrosse team makes history with 9-5 title winEWING — Sparta defeated Ocean City, 9-5, in the Group 2 boys lacrosse final on June 13 at The College of New Jersey. The win marked Sparta’s first group title in program history.Sparta advanced to Saturday’s Group final with a dominant 12-4 upset win over top-seeded West Morris in the North Jersey Group 2 final. Goalie Jake Alliegro made 16 saves, while three Sparta players had hat tricks. The Spartans also defeated No. 15 Paramus, No. 7 Mendham and No. 3 Holmdel on their way to the title.Scoring was sparse to start on Saturday, as both teams netted just one goal in the first quarter. The two squads entered halftime with Sparta up 2-1. The score remained close at the break, partly due to goalies Jake Alliegro (Sparta) and Tim Windfelder’s (Ocean City) play in net and Sparta’s perfect 3-for-3 rate on killing man-up chances.More: Mountain Lakes lacrosse family rallies to another titleIn the second half, though, Sparta took over. It outscored Ocean City 7-4. Five of those goals came in the third quarter, courtesy of a three-goal run in a little over a minute, catalyzed by faceoff man Johnny Palmer. That helped the Spartans cruise to a victory in the fourth quarter and claim their first-ever group title. This article originally appeared on New Jersey Herald: Sparta boys' lacrosse gets historic win over Ocean City in finals0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMExeter fight back to stun Bath and reach Prem finalThe PremBath (26) 26Tries: Obano, Du Toit, Cokanasiga, Arundell Cons: Carreras 3 Exeter (10) 27Tries: Tshiunza, Hammersley, Fisilau, Burger Cons: Slade 2 Pens: Skinner Exeter Chiefs produced a sublime second-half turnaround to stun defending champions Bath 27-26 at the Recreation Ground and reach their first Prem final since 2021.The Chiefs became just the second side in the past decade to win a semi-final away from home and will go to the Allianz Stadium next Saturday for the seventh time in their history to face Northampton Saints for the title.Exeter were 26-10 down at the break but scored 17 unanswered points in the second half as Ben Hammersley, Greg Fisilau and Ethan Burger all crossed as Bath fell apart, and Joe Cokanasiga was sent to the sin-bin.Bath had a chance to win the match in the closing minutes and went through more than 40 phases right in front of Exeter's try line, but rather than go for a drop-goal they were ultimately held up over the line with their season coming to an abrupt end.Exeter's victory caps an impressive campaign for Rob Baxter's side, who placed ninth in the 2024-25 season for their worst-ever finish in the league. They spent a summer rebuilding and now go to London in search of a third Prem title and a return to their trophy-laden glory days. For Bath there are major questions of what if as the dream of a second consecutive title and third Prem final slipped through their fingers.Exeter confidently beat Bath just a few weeks ago at Sandy Park and they could have had the first score in the semi-final shortly after the kick-off had a pass to Cameron Ridl not been forward.Bath had a chance of their own but Santiago Carreras, in for the injured Finn Russell at fly-half, threw the ball straight to Ridl to intercept in their first real attack on the Exeter line.Much like in the second half a turning point came when Henry Slade was shown a yellow for thoughtlessly slapping the ball out of Bath scrum-half Ben Spencer's hands. Bath capitalised from the restart as Beno Obano barrelled over from a few metres out. While Harvey Skinner's penalty put Exeter on the scoreboard, Thomas Du Toit added Bath's second try on his final appearance at the Rec before leaving the club in the summer, powering over under the weight of three Exeter tacklers.Slade returned and got Exeter over the line, but this time the try was denied for Paul Brown-Bampoe's foot hitting touch seconds before. But there was no denying Christ Tshiunza, who produced a moment of individual brilliance as the forward sidestepped Tom de Glanville, raced into space, and dived over to make it 14-10.Under Johann van Graan, Bath have grown accustomed to big occasions such as this and they reestablished control instantly, as Ollie Lawrence broke through and spun the ball wide to Cokanasiga and he slid into the corner.Henry Arundell then clinched Bath's fourth try to make it 26-10, collecting a Ben Spencer kick to the corner and dabbing down.Exeter needed fresh impetus and Baxter brought on a whole new front row in the opening minutes of the second half. It renewed the visitors' momentum and turned the tide their way.Winger Hammersley, on for the injured Ridl before the break, drifted through a gap to run under the posts for a crucial score.Exeter were growing in confidence and Skinner then threw a dummy to ghost past two Bath players and make ground, with Fisilau getting the ball down to bring them within four points again.Bath finally made changes of their own but it seemed too late. The mood firmly turned inside the Rec when Cokanasiga was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on with 64 minutes on the clock and Exeter continued to ramp up the pressure. Burger capped the turnaround, scoring from close range, and although Slade missed his second conversion, Exeter led by a point, their first lead of the game. Still Bath had one final roll of the dice in the closing minutes, and as they crept in front of the Exeter posts, with Carreras sat in the pocket, ready for a drop-goal attempt, the team stuck with their usually reliable forwards and chose to continue through the phases, only to get held up at the death.Bath: De Glanville; Cokanasiga, Lawrence, Ojomoh, Arundell; Spencer (c), Carreras; Obano, Dunn, Du Toit Roux, Ewels, Bayliss, Underhill, Barbeary.Replacements: Tuipulotu, Van Wyk, Sela, Molony, Hill, Van der Linde, Redpath, Reid.Sin-bin: Cokanasiga (64 mins)Exeter: Woodburn; Brown-Bampoe, Slade, Ikitau, Ridl; Skinner, Varney; Sio, Norey, Iosefa-Scott, Jenkins (c), Zambonin, Hooper, Tshiunza, Fisilau.Replacements: Dweba, Burger, Tchumbadze, Tuima, Vintcent, Cairns, Wimbush, Hammersley.Sin-bin: Slade (10).Referee: Christophe Ridley.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHull FC end losing run with win over HuddersfieldBetfred Super LeagueHull FC (12) 36Tries: Moy, Arthur, O'Neill 2, Bourouh, Barron Goals: Sezer 6Huddersfield (6) 12Tries: Russell, Wrench Goals: Flanagan 2Hull FC ended their four-match losing streak in Super League with a win which piles on the misery for bottom side Huddersfield Giants. The visitors to the MKM Stadium had lost their previous six matches but sparked some hope among their travelling supporters by taking an early lead as Olly Russell, returning from injury, scampered over for a try. That optimistic start soon faded in the face of some defensive laxity and poor handling by the Giants, and Hull ground their way back in front by half-time through tries from the excellent Logan Moy and Jake Arthur.Hull opened up in the second half to take the game away from the Giants with makeshift centre Ethan O'Neill scoring his first two tries of the season, while scores from Amir Bourouh and Harvey Barron ensured Huddersfield slumped to a seventh straight defeat. The win moved the Black and Whites up to ninth place on points difference, but they are still eight points adrift of the play-off places. However, an improved performance, especially in the second half, lifted the crowd. They were a little stunned to go behind 10 minutes into the game as Russell finished off a sharp Giants move, but Zach Woolford accelerated from dummy half and had full-back Moy inside him to score under the posts and level the score six minutes later.Hull edged ahead in a dull first half as Jed Cartwright's break and neat offload fed Arthur to go under the posts.A try-saving tackle on Lee Kershaw by Cartwright and Tom Briscoe thwarted Huddersfield as they sought to hit back early in the second half, but once Leeds Rhinos loanee O'Neill had run on to Arthur's grubber kick to extend the lead, the visitors' resistance flagged.Bourouh, who had a fine game, dashed over from dummy half for another try, and when Moy's pace again proved too hot for Huddersfield to handle, Barron was on hand to finish. With the game won, Hull began to enjoy themselves and O'Neill, normally a second-row forward, showed he was growing into his new role with a sidestep and two hand-offs before claiming his second try.Connor Wrench gave the visiting fans something to cheer with a fine solo try late on but the problems keep mounting for new head coach Jim Lenihan.'Really nice balance' - reactionHull FC interim head coach Andy Last told BBC Radio Humberside:"We spoke about the importance of this match on the back of an important week for us, with it being Hull and Proud Week, and we certainly got a strong performance."I was really pleased we scored some point, and some nice tries, and thought we had a really nice balance to our game. When we had to do the hard work, we did that well, and when we had to open it up and play a bot more expansively, we did that really well."We thought we had to play the long game against Huddersfield. They're a little bit like us, a little bit out of sorts and low on confidence, so we had to make sure we put the necessary fatigue into the opponent before we tried to play expansive."They scored early but what was pleasing was that I didn't sense it in the crowd, they were still fully behind us and celebrating anything that they could. That made a difference to the mindset of the players and we ended up getting in at half time in front."Hull FC: Moy; Barron, O'Neill, L. Kemp, Briscoe; Arthur, Sezer; Mata'utia, Bourouh, Hill, Batchelor, Cartwright, Kirby.Interchanges: Ese'ese, Hutchinson, Salabio, Wood.Huddersfield: Flanagan; Kershaw, Wrench, Gagai, Milne; Lolohea, Russell; Powell, Greenwood, O'Donnell, Rogers, Woolford, Patolo.Interchanges: Burgess, King, Cozza, Geyer.Referee: Tara Jones.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHarsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar handed maiden ODI caps as India opt to field in 25-over contestIndia handed maiden ODI caps to Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar ahead of their clash against Afghanistan, with the two youngsters marking a special milestone in their careers.Dubey received his cap from KL Rahul, while India captain Shubman Gill presented Gurnoor Brar with his debut cap before the start of play. After earlier concerns over the weather, conditions improved significantly and the skies cleared in time for the match. The contest would be reduced to 25 overs per side, setting up what promises to be an intriguing encounter. Under the revised playing conditions, each team can use a maximum of five bowlers, with each bowler allowed to deliver up to five overs. The batting powerplay will last for the first five overs of each innings. At the toss, Gill called correctly and elected to field first, citing the overcast conditions and the possibility of early assistance for the seamers."We will bowl first. It's a bit overcast, so the bowlers might get some help. Looks like a good surface, good wicket to bat on, could be something early on for the pacers. It's all about trying different combinations to see what works for us. We're playing around 15-20 ODIs before the World Cup, so it's about trying things. We're going with two debutants. Jaiswal, Prince and Kuldeep miss out," Gill said.Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi admitted that his side would also have preferred to bowl first but remained confident about putting up a strong performance."We wanted to bowl first, but it's not in our hands; we need to start well with the bat. We did very well in the recent past. This is the first time we're playing India in their home conditions, we're excited and hopefully we'll do well. There are three seamers and three spinners, one seamer is an all-rounder," Shahidi said. With two debutants in the Indian XI, favourable weather conditions returning and a shortened 25-over format adding an extra layer of unpredictability, the stage is set for an absorbing contest.Teams:Afghanistan (Playing XI): Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil(w), Rashid Khan, Mohammad Saleem Safi, AM Ghazanfar, Zia Ur Rahman SharifiIndia (Playing XI): Shubman Gill(c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan(w), Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harsh Dubey, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna 1317053970 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTST Best Bets: NBA Finals Game 5 editionJun 10, 2026; New York, New York, USA; New York Knicks forward OG Anunoby (8) makes a game-winning tip shot against San Antonio Spurs guards Dylan Harper (2) and Devin Vassell (24) during game four of the 2026 NBA Finals in the final second of the fourth quarter at Madison Square Garden. If tonight is the last game of this rollercoaster of an NBA season, then expect it to end on a high note. These NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks have been nothing short of fantastic. Through four games, the Knicks lead in the aggregate by just eight points despite being up 3-1, as each contest has been decided in the closing moments. Game 4 gave us what will likely be remembered as one of the greatest NBA Finals games of all time, with the Knicks storming back from a 29-point deficit in the third quarter to win in stunning fashion, as OG Anunoby’s tip-in with 1.2 seconds left put New York on the doorstep of its first championship since 1973. In Game 5, the NBA world eagerly awaits the response of Victor Wembanyama. After leading his team to the NBA Finals in his first-ever playoff appearance, this series has seen several legacy-defining gaffes from the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, such as his indefensible turnover late in Game 2 and his pair of missed free throws in the closing moments of Game 4. We’ve seen just one elite performance from the Frenchman in this series, when he dropped 32 points, eight rebounds and six assists in Game 3, the Spurs’ lone victory. Can he replicate that in Game 5 to prolong this series, or will a new world champion be crowned this Saturday night? For all of your NBA Finals betting picks, here are tonight’s TST Best Bets brought to you by BetOnline.ag. Click here to join. All new players get a 50% welcome bonus and up to $250 in free bets. First Pick: San Antonio Spurs vs. New York Knicks – Under 216Rundown: While the winner of this game is incredibly difficult to pick, the over/under is not. These teams have both shown they have answers to the opposing team’s biggest offensive threats. The Spurs have made it difficult on Jalen Brunson with their aggressive perimeter defense, and likewise, the Knicks have done an excellent job keeping Wembanyama from getting to his spots on the interior through their collection of lengthy, physical defenders. Shooting variance can often swing an over/under in the modern NBA. However, despite both teams lighting it up from beyond the arc in Game 4, with the Knicks shooting 47% and the Spurs shooting 40%, the under still hit as neither team surpassed 107 points. The under has hit in three of four games in this series, and has shown to be safe from even a three-point barrage from both teams. As the pressure mounts in this pivotal Game 5, with the Spurs fighting for their playoff lives and the Knicks getting an opportunity to return to New York as world champions, expect offense to be at a premium tonight. Second Pick: San Antonio Spurs -3 1H over New York KnicksJun 10, 2026; New York, New York, USA; New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (11) controls the ball against San Antonio Spurs guard De'aaron Fox (4) and forward Victor Wembanyama (1) during the fourth quarter of game four of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden. Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesJun 10, 2026; New York, New York, USA; New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (11) controls the ball against San Antonio Spurs guard De'aaron Fox (4) and forward Victor Wembanyama (1) during the fourth quarter of game four of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.Rundown: What makes picking this game so difficult is that by every metric, the Spurs and Knicks are too close for this series to be done in five games. However, the tidal wave of momentum the Knicks are riding following the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history is incredibly daunting to bet against, especially considering the youth and inexperience of this Spurs team. Because of that, we’re going outside the box here by picking the Spurs to cover the first half spread of three points. If NBA games were 24 minutes instead of 48, this series would be flipped on its head, as the Spurs have been the significantly better first half team, before their inexperience catches up to them in the closing moments. The Spurs are averaging 60 points while shooting 49% from the field and 42% from three in the first halves of this series, while averaging 14.5 assists to only five turnovers. San Antonio has had no trouble getting out to hot starts in this series, and that should continue with a raucous home crowd behind them in Game 5. Much has been made about Wembanyama’s conditioning in the national conversation of this series, as he has seemed to wear down late in games. The Spurs have kept Wembanyama’s minutes low throughout the regular season, as he averaged just 29 per game, and the Frenchman has seemed to struggle with the requisite ramp-up of the postseason, as he played 44 minutes in his 9-for-25 shooting Game 4 performance. However, San Antonio has benefited from two days off between tonight and Game 4, and the last time there was a two-day break in this series was when Wembanyama put together his best performance in Game 3. Expect Wembanyama to come out firing in Game 5 with his season on the line, as the Spurs build a big first half lead before their championship mettle is once again tested late by the resilient Knicks.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

She only hit .244 as a redshirt freshman and then hit .275 this season. Dodge logged 46 RBIs, 18 home runs, 20 doubles, 50 walks and 82 runs scored over two seasons with a .518 slugging percentage and a .383 on-base percentage.Dodge is the third departure of the offseason for Tennessee. Sophomore outfielder Saviya Morgan and freshman pitcher Kailey Plumlee also entered the transfer portal, and Plumlee committed to Alabama on June 10.Dodge was ranked No. 65 as a utility player in the 2024 class out of Bradenton, Florida, and she enrolled early to redshirt the 2024 season at Tennessee. She won a pair of Florida 7A state championships in 2021-22 at Lakewood Ranch High School. The 5-foot-8 infielder was a true utility player that Tennessee coach Karen Weekly said she felt like she could play anywhere. Dodge started at second base as a redshirt freshman and for the entirety of this season until the NCAA regionals.Weekly needed to shift the batting lineup and ended up moving Dodge from second to third base, and she thrived despite the drastic position change going into regionals. Tennessee's defense was at its best en route to the WCWS semifinals, and Dodge played a significant role in that. But Dodge struggled at the plate in the NCAA Tournament. She only logged four hits in 29 at-bats for a .137 batting average with two runs scored and a walk over nine games.Tennessee has another strong incoming freshman class, which includes the top three ranked players in the state. Four of the five recruits are expected to play infield or are utility players.Avary Stockwell is the No. 1 player in Tennessee of the 2026 class, and Weekly said in the signing day release she expects Stockwell to play at catcher and corner infield. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSparks seek third straight win as they face Mercury in PhoenixMay 21, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Los Angeles Sparks guard Kelsey Plum (10) and Phoenix Mercury guard Jovana Nogic (29) talk in the first half at Mortgage Matchup Center.PHOENIX -- The Sparks (6-6) are trying to cancel that previous three-game skid with a third straight win. After wins against the Fire and the Storm, the Sparks are returning to Arizona to take on the Phoenix Mercury, a team that they have beaten earlier in the season. The story as of late for the Sparks has been Nneka Ogwumike. In the last two wins, she's averaged 22 points and 13 boards. Ogwumike has been more aggressive ever since she had a talk with Kelsey Plum and other Sparks teammates before their game against the Fire."KP actually kind of lit a fire under me," Ogwumike said during practice on Tuesday. "She said that she wanted me to be more aggressive. Erica (Wheeler) also told me that, too. I think I have a tendency to not try to overstep when I'm in a new system but I can't allow that to keep me from going out there and doing what I can do."Plum corroborated the conversation."I think of all, everything, just really reinforcing," Plum said about 'lighting that fire' after their win against the Storm. "We're gonna go as far as me and you take us and I think that I just encourage her. Sometimes, I'm dynamic and people can play a little passive but I just encourage her, like, hey, listen, I need you to be hyper-aggressive when you get the ball whether that's in the pocket or the post or in transition. I need you to think about yourself."While Ogwumike had quite the game, the team overall didn't shoot well against the Storm."We didn't have a great shooting night but I'm proud of the fact that we still were able to hang in there, get stops when we needed to, get rebounds when we needed to, and that's how we're going to build on that. Sometimes, you've got to win ugly, and you can gain some confidence and momentum from that," Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. They're going to have to shoot it better against the Mercury. They had a 60-point first half that helped them to the win in their previous encounter. Dearica Hamby went for 27 points and 15 rebounds in that win in Phoenix on May 21st.And believe it or not, the Sparks have been better defensively. Their last five games have them at a 103.7 defensive rating (which would be 7th in that period of time), which is much better than when they were the worst defensive rating in history. They did put it together the last two games on both sides and they're going to have to keep it going against a Mercury team that, while they're 4-10, are very capable. This is a team that went to the Finals last year, after all. The Merc still have Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and Kahleah Copper. Their starting point guard, Monique Akoa Makani, didn't play in the previous match-up with the Sparks and she'll be suited up on Saturday. Lexi Held was reacquired after being waived by the Tempo. Jovana Nogic is still a threat even though she's slowed down a bit as of late. And Natasha Mack is one of the more improved players this season. The Sparks continue to seek that balance on being a fiery team offensively and a steely squad on the defensive end. It's done them well the last two games. Let's see if they get it done for a third straight game. And if they do, it'll be their first time being over .500 this far (13 games) into the season since 2020.0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'You win a Test and can't celebrate?' : Former England cricketer blasts ECB amid nightclub row, backs Ben StokesFormer England spinner Graeme Swann has questioned the England Cricket Board's (ECB) decision to impose a midnight curfew on players, saying England captain Ben Stokes has become a victim of a culture that is more focused on policing players than allowing them to celebrate success.Stokes came under scrutiny after footage emerged from post-Test celebrations at a nightclub following England's win over New Zealand at Lord's. Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson were involved in an incident that also included Saracens academy rugby player Totoa Auvaa.Speaking to news agency PTI, Swann said he disagreed with the very idea of a curfew."My thoughts are very mixed on this. The fact that there's a curfew put in place is... I'm a former player. You will never, ever convince me that a curfew is a good thing. It's ridiculous that they even did that in the first place," Swann told PTI.Swann said the ECB appeared to be more concerned with optics than the realities of a dressing room environment."I understand why they did it, because they're trying to paint a good picture to other people, to a PR side of it. That doesn't work. I think they'll learn a lesson, the ECB, from that, that we shouldn't have done that at all," he said.According to Swann, it would have been better for the ECB to discuss team culture with players instead of imposing blanket restrictions."We should have come out, sat down and actually talked about what we're going to do as a culture and make sure we're moving forward.""But just to put a midnight curfew after winning a Test match, the day you're not allowed to celebrate winning a Test match for your country is a dark day," he said.Swann said he had no issue with Stokes celebrating a Test victory and believed the problem was with the rule itself."I don't think Ben Stokes has done anything wrong here, other than go against a rule that shouldn't have been implemented in the first place."He added that not enough facts about the nightclub incident were publicly known."I don't know the story, what happened. No one knows the story. So, I’m not even going to comment on that."Returning to the curfew issue, Swann said:"Like I say, he celebrated winning the Test match. I have no issue with that whatsoever. I do have a massive issue with the team curfew at midnight after winning a Test."The former off-spinner said professional cricketers should be trusted to act responsibly."Before a Test, fine. You shouldn't drink before or during a game. As a professional athlete, you shouldn't be doing that. But that doesn't need writing down on a piece of paper for me."Swann also compared the reaction to Stokes with how major sporting successes are often celebrated."I think England are playing in the Football World Cup at the minute. If they win that Football World Cup and went on a 10-day bender, we'd celebrate that as a country like you wouldn't believe."With Stokes left out of England's squad for the second Test against New Zealand, questions have been raised about his future in the game. Swann said he hoped this would not mark the end of Stokes' career."I don't know. I hope it's not the end because he's the best captain we've had, arguably, since Andrew Strauss. Alastair Cook's not going to like that. Sorry, Cooky,"The Northampton man drew parallels with previous incidents involving England players and suggested the public discourse had become increasingly toxic.“This is what happened to Ben Duckett in the winter (during the Ashes in Australia). Who recorded it and sent that? This is supposed to be an England fan and they'll pretend. They'll say, 'Oh, we're doing it because we love our country.' No, they're doing it to try and make money.”“The culture we live in at the minute, we're trying desperately to film someone doing it and knock them down, put them in the newspaper. I think it's a sad time we live in. I really do.”0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMInvicta FC, Karate Combat champ Elisandra Ferreira aims to collect another belt in PFLElisandra Ferreira wants to add another piece of gold to her history and display the PFL strawweight belt next to her past trophies and belts.Ferreira makes her debut under the PFL banner this Saturday at PFL Nigeria, battling undefeated Nigerian talent Juliet Ukah in Lagos, and does so after winning the Invicta FC and Karate Combat titles over the past couple of years. At age 28 and training alongside two-time PFL champion Larissa Pacheco, “Lili” feels ready for the spotlight.“[Being champion in other promotions] is very important because they look at me differently,” Ferreira told MMA Fighting. “They say, ‘Wow, the girl is a champion.’ And it’s not just any promotion. Invicta may not be as active right now, but it has a huge name in the market. Karate Combat speaks for itself, it arrived not long ago but has made a lot of noise. Being a champion in both of those organizations makes me very happy.”Ferreira started her MMA career in Brazil in 2019 and two years later won her first belt, the Nação Cyborg atomweight title. She flew to Canada months later to compete for the Pallas Athena Women’s Fighting Championship, but ended up losing a decision despite suffering multiple uncalled fouls. An attempt to overturn the result was denied, but Ferreira still felt like she has grown from that experience. The Brazilian prospect joined Invicta FC after that and won three in a row before winning and defending the atomweight belt, moving up to 115 pounds to add another championship to her career under Karate Combat rules.“Every promotion I enter I’m looking to become champion,” Ferreira said. “I want to walk away with a story. We’re athletes and our time is limited so we have to enter every promotion aiming to be the champion, to be the best. I’m not taking anything away from anyone else, but you have to be better than you were before. That challenge is what drives me. I always enter to become champion. I’m entering the PFL now, and I want the belt.”Ukah is 9-0 as a professional. Most of her wins have come via decision, much like Ferreira. The Brazilian, however, said she’s getting sharper on the feet after working with knockout artist Pacheco — and competing in Karate Combat.“That only helped evolve my game because it made me want to become even more of a striker,” Ferreira said with a laugh. “I enjoy striking. Now I’m training with Marcelo Bispo and Larissa Pacheco, and they both come from that striking side as well — Larissa used to be more of a grappler, but after she started knocking people out she really developed a taste for striking. So it has only helped my MMA game evolve.”PFL has yet to announce plans for the inaugural strawweight title, and “Lili” feels that her past accomplishments give her a good head start.“I’m going to fight an undefeated girl who already has three fights in the PFL,” Ferreira said. “If I beat her and put on a show and they want to give me a title shot next, I’m ready. But if I need one more fight, or two more fights, I don’t mind either. I came here to become champion and chase the title. No matter how long it takes, I’ll show them in every fight that I’m ready for the belt.”0 Comments 0 Shares 5 Views 0 Reviews
