SPORTS.YAHOO.COM👀 I'm not finished here: Rüdiger's message after his extension👀 I'm not finished here: Rüdiger's message after his extensionAntonio Rüdiger has officially renewed his contract with Real Madrid through a forceful message on his social media. The German centre-back, leader of Los Blancos’ back line, put any doubts about his future to rest at a time when the team is facing a demanding stretch of the season. The international defender did not hide how happy he is to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabéu, although he focused his message on self-criticism and hard work: "Renewing my contract with Real Madrid is a source of pride, but above all, it is a commitment to turn the situation around together with my teammates".The recent period has not been easy for the player, who has had to deal with injuries that sparked debate about his performances. Far from letting it get him down, the centre-back made it clear that outside doubts have been his fuel: "Some may have written me off after my injuries, but that has only motivated me even more. So, thank you for that".True to his competitive and charismatic character, the defender said that adversity is the ideal stage to show what this club is made of: "We are going through a demanding period. Setbacks have put us to the test, but this is exactly where I want to be".Rüdiger ended his statement by sending a message of total confidence to the dressing room and the Madrid fans to turn the current situation around: "We are united, we fight together, and we will overcome it together. Now more than ever. Hala Madrid!".This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇪🇸 here.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal admirers of Bournemouth midfielder Alex ScottArsenal admirers of Bournemouth midfielder Alex ScottArsenal are admirers of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott as Gunners manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his options at the Emirates Stadium club, according to The Athletic. Arsenal are preparing for next season’s Premier League title defence and want to make quality additions to their squad this summer. Scott has caught the eye of the Gunners after he enjoyed an outstanding Premier League campaign last term. The 22-year-old is also a target for Manchester United and Bournemouth are desperate to hold on to him.Scott was invited to the England camp last month to train with the team after not making the final 26-man World Cup squad. Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel claimed he was delighted to have the Arsenal target at the camp and an international debut is on the cards after he received his first senior England call-up last November. The North Londoners also have West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes on their radar, but the Red Devils are the favourites to sign the Portuguese.Arteta wants quality cover and competition for Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard is expected to leave after failing to impress on the pitch. Scott fits the bill having proved himself in the Premier League, but Arsenal also have Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi on the radar. The 18-year-old midfielder was one of the best players on the pitch in the 1-1 draw between Morocco and Brazil in their World Cup opener, completing 60 passes and three successful dribbles.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPaddy Pimblett issues expletive-laden response to rival Ilia Topuria’s defeat by Justin GaethjePaddy Pimblett has issued a scathing response to Ilia Topuria’s defeat by Justin Gaethje, as the Liverpudlian’s rivalry with the Spanish-Georgian continues. On Sunday, Topuria defended his lightweight title against Gaethje in the main event of the UFC’s remarkable White House event, with Gaethje pulling off a huge upset.Topuria, 29, retired on his stool between the fourth and fifth rounds, as his American opponent, 37, unified the lightweight belts. Paddy Pimblett cageside at UFC London in March (PA)Gaethje had twice failed to win undisputed-title fights in the UFC, but he earned this third chance by outpointing Pimblett in January, dominating the Briton to become a two-time interim champion. Despite the one-sided nature of Pimblett’s own loss to Gaethje, “Paddy The Baddy” was delighted by Topuria’s defeat – the first of his professional career. His rivalry with Topuria stems from an altercation in London in 2022, when “El Matador” confronted Pimblett over allegedly anti-Georgian tweets.“Oh, my god, you quit, you little b***h,” Pimblett said on his YouTube channel. “Justin Gaethje, man, the ultimate spoiler. What did I tell you? I said he was gonna win, didn’t I?“Oh, my God. Oh, my God. You quit like a little b***h. My face was worse than yours, you little p***y. “Justin Gaethje, well in, lad. Undisputed champion, you deserve it after your career, but now I want that rematch. I am gonna finish BSD, and I want that rematch with Justin Gaethje for the undisputed title.”Pimblett was referencing his upcoming fight with Benoit Saint-Denis, which is scheduled as the co-main event of Conor McGregor’s comeback against Max Holloway on 11 July.“I told you, didn’t I? It was fate,” Pimblett continued. “Justin Gaethje, man, hats off to you, you deserve it for the f***ing heavy career you’ve had. You absolutely deserve it, lad. Ilia Topuria (centre) after his stoppage loss to Justin Gaethje (Reuters)“Everyone gave me s*** for getting beat by him. What now? What now, lad? Thought he was ‘finished’, thought he was ‘38’, thought he was ‘over the hill’, and then he’s just beat you – greatest fighter of all time, Ilia Topuria, you f***ing gang of gobs***e.“I went five [rounds] with him. I took every f***ing shot that he threw at me and kept walking forward. This little b***h has just quit after four rounds, that’s what this little b***h has just done. Look at him sat on his stool. I kept f***ing walking forward at Gaethje for five rounds and didn’t have an ounce of quit in me.“Arman [Tsarukyan] can fight Ilia now, they’ve been arguing for ages. Me vs Justin, let’s do it. No eye pokes, and we’ll see how the fight goes.”Pimblett, 31, was referencing the fouls that Gaethje got away with in their January bout, although it was largely one-way traffic in Gaethje’s favour anyway. Gaethje beat Pimblett in a one-sided fight in January (Getty)In comparison, Topuria dropped Gaethje with a body shot in the second round of their fight, which was competitive in stretches. However, Gaethje dealt Topuria considerable damage in round one, and that damage almost led a doctor to force the end of the fight after round three. The doctor changed his mind after speaking to referee Marc Goddard, but Topuria retired after round four anyway. “Justin, congratulations,” Topuria wrote on Instagram on Monday. “You said you’d leave your mark on my face… and you did. You took the sight from my right eye in the first round, and by the end of the second, from my left too. “No excuses. I had one of the best camps of my life. I came in sharp, prepared, and ready. Last night was your night. That’s the nature of this game. Glory and pain walk side by side.“I’ll heal. I’ll rest. And I’ll return stronger, wiser, and far more dangerous. And trust me… this story between us is far from over. We will have our rematch.”0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCBS views Lions as potential Brendan Sorsby NFL supplemental draft fitAfter one of the most controversial college sports sagas in recent times, Brendan Sorsby plans to enter the 2026 NFL supplemental draft.Sorsby's decision to enter the NFL supplemental draft comes on the heels of a well-publicized fight against the NCAA to regain his eligibility with Texas Tech for the 2026 college football season.Sorsby had been ruled ineligible by the NCAA after it discovered he had placed more than 9,000 bets, totaling at least $90,000, on professional and college sports over four years while enrolled at Indiana and Cincinnati, including at least 40 wagers involving Indiana football when he was a freshman with the Hoosiers in 2022.Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA by a Texas judge on June 8 that appeared to pave the way for Sorsby to play college football in 2026. But, that was met with fierce backlash across the college football landscape and by the Big 12 Conference. With Sorsby pivoting to the NFL supplemental draft, CBS took a look at eight NFL teams who may have interest in Sorsby, including the Detroit Lions:Jared Goff turns 32-years-old during the upcoming season and his primary backups are 33-year-old Teddy Bridgewater and undrafted free agent Luke Altmyer. The team had previously used a third-round pick on Hendon Hooker in 2023, but Hooker had never been a threat to Goff's claim as the starting quarterback and is now on his fourth team. Sorsby could be Goff, but three years later on the timeline. The Lions are likely to be too competitive to find themselves within striking distance of a top quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, so this represents an opportunity to address the position at a value rate.Detroit did give Goff a four-year extension in May of 2024, but the dead cap hit drops below $40 million -- a paltry sum in comparison to recent figures from Tua Tagovailoa and Russell Wilson -- after the 2027 season. At some point down the road, the Lions will be looking for a Goff replacement. Unless things really spiral, moving on from Goff after the 2027 season still feels unlikely. In his college career, Sorsby passed for 7,208 yards and 60 touchdowns against 18 interceptions.Sorsby would have to be granted entry by the NFL in order to be eligible to be selected in the supplemental draft later this summer.A league spokesperson declined to comment when reached by NFL.com on Monday night. For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWyclef Jean ‘sikes’ notorious Premier League hardman Duncan Ferguson in awkward encounterPhoto by John Lamparski/Getty ImagesThe 2026 World Cup arrived under a cloud of doubt, yet the tournament has delivered more warmth than worry at least in relation to all things football.Beyond the ongoing grumbling about hydration breaks and off-field politics, the mood and coverage around the competition has been positive — and the latest viral moment only added to it.That moment came after Scotland edged Haiti 1-0, when former striker Duncan Ferguson found himself on the receiving end of a prank from one of Haiti’s most famous supporters. The culprit was Wyclef Jean, the Grammy-winning musician and proud Haitian, who decided to have a little fun at Ferguson’s expense — seemingly unaware of exactly who he was dealing with.Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt – AMA/Getty ImagesWyclef Jean picks the wrong man to teaseFor anyone who followed his playing days, Ferguson was no ordinary target. The Scotsman built a reputation as one of the game’s genuine hard men, feared by defenders and famous for a no-nonsense streak that trailed him long after retirement.Wyclef, it seems, had no idea.In a clip shared on Instagram, the singer approached Ferguson and extended his hand as if to make peace — then snatched it away at the last second. He said: “I’ll shake your hand, man… sike! Nah man, you messed up. You guys done cheated on me — you know we should’ve won that game. The referee, you set up the game. No!”To his credit, Ferguson took the ribbing in good spirits. The Haitian circled back moments later to offer a proper handshake, which the big Scot accepted with a smile. The presenter, clearly enjoying the exchange, promised viewers she would explain exactly who Ferguson was during the break — hinting that Wyclef might think twice before trying that again. It was, all things considered, sound advice.READ MORE: David Beckham’s mum ‘trying to be funny’ with brutal McDonald’s Thierry Henry swipe0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

First appearance in super regionals. First College World Series appearance. And on a broader scale, first 30-loss team to make the College World Series.Troy competed in the brutal Sun Belt, headlined by Hattiesburg Regional hosts Southern Miss. Though the Golden Eagles were bounced without winning a game, the Trojans were able to survive Gainesville by way of 26 runs over two games against the Gators to make it out of the loser's bracket and get to supers. From there, they drubbed Little Rock by a combined score of 19-4 as super regional hosts.REQUIRED READING: Who's eliminated from College World Series? The third baseman posted a photo of herself in a Florida Gators uniform on social media as she looks for her new home in the portal. It would be a shocking move for Beachum, who not only played at FSU for three years, but is from Tallahassee.Beachum is one of the most coveted players in the portal after her time with the Seminoles, where she was named the NFCA Division I Freshman of the Year, made multiple All-American teams, and All-ACC teams over three seasons in the program. She is ranked as the No. 3 overall player and No. 1 corner infielder in the transfer portal by Softball America. She had an excellent junior season and is entering her final season of eligibility. She was named First Team All-ACC and a Second Team All-American by Softball America.Beachum ended her FSU career with a .375 batting average, 37 home runs, 35 doubles, 180 RBI, 158 runs scored, and 202 hits. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM2015 Panthers ranked 2nd-best team to not win Super Bowl in last 20 yearsThe 2007 New England Patriots are universally acknowledged as the greatest NFL team to never win a Super Bowl. In fact, they were significantly better than a lot of teams that did win one. Tom Brady, Randy Moss and the rest of the gang have been put at No. 1 on a new list from Pro Football Focus ranking the best squads to miss out on the Lombardi Trophy over the last 20 years. So, who's at No. 2?Well, contributor Bradley Locker has Cam Newton and the 2015 Carolina Panthers right behind those nearly-undefeated Pats. Locker writes the following of those Panthers, who went 15-1 before falling short to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50:The 2015 Panthers assembled a similar oh-so-close year, going 15-1 before falling to the Broncos in Super Bowl 50. Carolina’s 94.4 overall PFF grade unsurprisingly led the NFL. Boasting the league MVP in Cam Newton along with Greg Olsen, Ron Rivera’s bunch provided endless offensive fireworks. But its defense was potentially even better, as Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis and Josh Norman placed second in scoring drive rate allowed. Balanced, star-powered and incredibly energetic, the 2015 Panthers continue to live on. Their +192 point differential ties for 15th all time.Newton, of course, had the best season of his career as a pro and rightfully gets a lot of the attention for this group—especially considering the lack of help he had at the skill positions outside of Olsen. His efforts helped him become the only Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year in franchise history. However, it was Carolina's defense that really powered this train. An absolutely lethal front-seven was the heart of it, led by their phenomenal linebackers in Kuechly and Davis. Up front, the Panthers were also loaded with the criminally underrated Kawann Short and host of other seasoned veterans and got standout campaigns on the backend from the likes of Norman and safety Kurt Coleman.Collectively, the Panthers ranked sixth in points allowed and yards allowed that season, and also finished sixth in sacks with 44. They were opportunistic as well, leading the league with an incredible 39 takeaways. The problem was that they ran into the best defense in the sport that year. Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was a shell of his former self at this point, but Denver ranked first in sacks (51), fourth in points allowed per game and first in yards allowed per game—even edging out Seattle's "Legion of Boom" in the last category.Carolina's best hope for an upset was winning the turnover battle decisively, but instead they lost 4-2 in this department. If that dynamic had been reversed, there's a really good chance they would have come out on top.Even still, this was a truly special team that deserves credit—even if their magical run didn't end with a ring.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: 2015 Panthers ranked 2nd-best team to not win Super Bowl0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Miami football won the weekend in Florida recruitingAnother busy weekend of official visits resulted in several high school football players on the USA TODAY Florida Network top 100 making college decisions.Among the top commitments were North Miami Beach safety Andre Hyppolite (No. 32, Miami), Palm Beach Lakes athlete Turmarian Moreland (No. 43, Virginia Tech) and Lakeland edge rusher Drew Sapp (No. 59, Colorado). The UCF Knights football program landed a pair of in-state commitments, while Wake Forest and Vanderbilt both added impact players to their secondaries.USA TODAY Florida Network recruiting reporters Jon Santucci and Nick Wilson gave their takeaways from the second weekend in June:Who was the weekend's biggest winner?Santucci: Miami. I absolutely love Andre Hyppolite's game. If the North Miami Beach safety was at another school in South Florida, everyone would know his name and his ability. He's long, rangy, physical and has the ability to add muscle to his 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame. This commitment wasn't a surprise as most expected Hyppolite to stay in Miami, but this still is a big win.Wilson: Miami has been pushing hard for Hyppolite for some time, and closing on him over Florida, Georgia, and Notre Dame was yet another statement win for this 'Canes class. He's the eighth Florida Top 100 player to commit to Mario Cristobal & Co., more than any other school in the country. As good as Hyppolite is as a player, this is a big win because it's another key recruiting win for a hometown player. What's your favorite commitment from June 12-14?Santucci: I feel like I already answered this with Hyppolite, so I'm going to cheat a little bit and say the running backs. Arwin Jackson to Appalachian State feels like a steal to me. The Carol City back has a lot of talent and was part of Chaminade-Madonna's ridiculously deep running back room last year. UCF quickly pivoted after Connail Jackson's decommitment by landing Atlantic back Omari St. Fort. He's got good size and legitimate track speed. Also really like Pace's Makael Williams going to South Alabama. Williams has been so productive at Pace the past two seasons and has a lot of upside. It was a good weekend for the running backs. I'm going to add one more since there's really nothing to stop me. Love Stanford landing edge rusher Duke Carpneter from the Geneva school. He's been rising up the rankings the past few months and has a really high ceiling.Wilson: I think Colorado is getting a real steal in Lakeland DE Drew Sapp (No. 59), and keeping him committed from now until signing day will a sneaky win in Florida for Deion Sanders and his staff. Vanderbilt added a strong, decorated track athlete in Riverdale S Levi McKenzie, their second speedster from the Sunshine State to join the class. UCF picked up two in-state commitments in Vero BEach EDGE Dontallis Render and St. Fort after losing out on Connail Jackson, noteworthy after the Knight's early struggles on the in-state recruiting trail. What schools are trending in the right direction?Santucci: Georgia Tech. The Yellowjackets keep loading up on Florida defenders. They added Niceville's Noah Renes, a physical linebacker this past weekend. They already have commitments from defensive linemen Jamar Thomspon (West Boca), Maleek Lee (Booker) and Adrian Williams (Trinity Christian). Georgia Tech now has five commits on the USA Today Florida Network top 100. Pitt deserves a nod here, too. I like the quick pivot to Miami Central quarterback James Perrone after Kevin Verpaele flipped to USF earlier in the week. Pitt always does well in Florida and this was another quality addition.Wilson: USF has had an impressive few weeks, flipping Merritt Island QB Kevin Verpaele (No. 70) away from Pitt while landing West Boca S Larry Morgan III. UCF has significantly improved their standing in Florida in recent weeks, now up to six in-state commits including Lake Wales ATH Kaneilius Purdy (No. 31). As Jon mentions here, Georgia Tech has really nailed some pickups and has positioned themselves well in the state. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe World Cup’s most unlikely star Tim Payne seals post-tournament transferPhoto by Megan Briggs/Getty ImagesA social media stunt that started with fewer than 5,000 Instagram followers has rewritten the final chapter of Tim Payne’s career. The New Zealand defender landed at the 2026 World Cup billed as the tournament’s least famous name, a label dreamed up online rather than earned on the pitch. Weeks later, he boasts an Instagram following of roughly 5.8 million — a figure that dwarfs most of the stars he is sharing the tournament with. That overnight fame is now translating into something more concrete. Payne has reportedly agreed a summer transfer, one that will carry the 32-year-old away from Australia’s A-League and toward the next stage of his career in South America.Photo by Hagen Hopkins/Getty ImagesWorld Cup viral star Tim Payne agrees to sign for Club OlimpiaThe right-back is set to join Paraguayan giants Club Olimpia, a switch that suggests he will see out the closing years of his career in Asunción rather than back home in Oceania.Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph broke the news, posting to X that an agreement is in place. For Olimpia — one of South America’s most decorated sides, with a record haul of Paraguayan titles and three Copa Libertadores crowns — the logic is easy to read. They land a seasoned 50-cap international who arrives with a ready-made global audience attached. The journey to this point is barely believable. Payne began the build-up to the finals with just 4,715 Instagram followers before he became a viral World Cup sensation overnight.Argentine content creator Valen Scarsini, better known as El Scarso, went hunting for the least recognizable player heading to the World Cup and pointed his audience toward the Kiwi.Payne took the chaos in his stride. Reacting in an Instagram video recorded partly in Spanish, he said: “It’s been a pretty crazy 48 hours, to say the least.”Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha pulled off a near-identical surge, climbing from around 50,000 Instagram followers into the millions after a heroic clean sheet against Spain — at one point overtaking NFL star Josh Allen’s following. With the group stage still throwing up new heroes almost daily, the question is no longer whether the World Cup can mint an overnight star, but who will be next.READ MORE: Wyclef Jean ‘sikes’ notorious Premier League hardman Duncan Ferguson in awkward encounter0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRoberto De Zerbi wants Tottenham to keep French forward Mathys TelRoberto De Zerbi wants Tottenham to keep French forward Mathys TelRoberto De Zerbi has assured Mathys Tel that he will be a key figure for Tottenham Hotspur next season, firmly shutting down speculation over a summer departure for the French forward. Despite a turbulent Premier League campaign that saw Spurs narrowly avoid relegation by just two points, the Italian has communicated his full trust in the 21-year-old attacker ahead of his first full season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.Tel’s future in North London initially appeared uncertain after a stop-start season under various managers, during which he started in just 13 of his 31 league appearances and scored four goals. Rumours began circulating linking the former Bayern Munich star with a move away, including strong interest from Bournemouth and several European clubs. There was even speculation that Tottenham might use Tel as a makeweight in a player-plus-cash swap deal for high-profile targets. However, before Tel departed for his summer break, De Zerbi held a private conversation with the forward to clarify his plans. According to Football.london, the manager made it clear he has no intention of letting Tel leave, explicitly stating that he is counting on him to be a central part of Tottenham’s frontline next season.De Zerbi’s firm stance is heavily influenced by Tel’s performances during the high-stakes final weeks of the season, including a crucial assist against Aston Villa and a spectacular 20-yard goal against Leeds United. Though that match also featured a costly, naive penalty conceded by the youngster, De Zerbi publicly defended him, emphasising that mistakes are part of a young player’s development and labelling him a “big talent” with immense mental resilience.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe last time Joe Root captained England in Test cricket before 2026 ENG vs NZ: A look back at the 2022 West Indies seriesThe last time Joe Root captained England in Test cricket before 2026 ENG vs NZ: A look back at the 2022 West Indies series originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.KEY TAKEAWAYS:Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson dropped for second Test; Joe Root named England's interim captain.Root resigned the captaincy in April 2022 after England won just one of 17 Tests.England's series defeat to West Indies in 2022 was the final chapter of Root's first stint.Joe Root returns as England test captain: A look back at his 2022 resignation after the West Indies seriesFew people would have bet on Joe Root captaining England in Test cricket again after he stepped down from the role back in 2022.However, following England's victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's, things have taken a turn for the worse in English cricket, and Root has been summoned to helm the boat. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were found to have visited a nightclub after the match and allegedly became involved in an altercation with a rugby player in the early hours of Monday morning.MORE: What really happened in Ben Stokes' nightclub incident: Timeline of England captain's potentially career-ending controversyDays later, the ECB announced that both had been withdrawn from selection for the second Test at The Oval, starting June 17, pending an ongoing investigation. With Stokes removed from the equation, Root was named interim captain for the Oval Test, stepping back into a role he vacated more than four years ago.Why did Joe Root resign from captaincy in 2022?The Caribbean trip in early 2022 proved to be the defining low point. Despite Root's personal insistence that the team had made "big improvements" and produced "some brilliant cricket" in that series, the results told a different story. After drawing the first two, England lost the deciding match in Grenada by 10 wickets, a scoreline that left no room for interpretation. By the time the squad flew home, Root had made up his mind. Across his entire captaincy, England won just one of their final 17 Test matches.MORE: McCullum opens up on Stokes' nightclub incident"After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England's men's Test captain," Root said."It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me, I know the timing is right. I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the past five years with enormous pride. It has been an honour to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket."I had loved leading my country but recently it's hit home how much of a toll it has taken on me and the impact it has had on me away from the game."MORE: England's cricket drinking culture has long stopped being funnyWhat is Joe Root's record as a Test captain?Root had taken up the mantle in 2017 after inheriting the role from Alastair Cook. His tenure included series wins against India at home in 2018 and against South Africa away in 2019-20. But the final stretch of his captaincy was brutal.England suffered a 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia, followed by series losses at home to New Zealand and India, and concluded with a 1-0 defeat to the West Indies in the Caribbean.Record CategoryAchievementMatches as Captain64Wins as Captain27Losses as Captain26Runs as Captain5,295Centuries (100s) as Captain14Half-Centuries (50s) as Captain26Catches as Captain87Stokes has held the captaincy since 2022, and vice-captain Harry Brook was bypassed for the role. Wisconsin could have up to four players taken in the Top 10, something that is relatively unheard of in a professional draft.Laila Edwards is a projected top-three pick, and she's joined alongside Kirsten Simms, someone who has a chance to go in the top five herself. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRandall Hill's 89-yard game winning TD is the Saints Play of the DayMike Ditka's tenure as New Orleans Saints head coach didn't turn out the way anyone expected -- after trading a king's ransom for running back Ricky Williams, Ditka went 15-33 over three years and was dismissed without a fraction of the fanfare he arrived with. But it wasn't all bad. The former Chicago Bears coach returned to the Windy City and came away with a rare win in 1997.That doesn't mean it was easy. The Saints jumped out to a 10-3 lead at halftime but were trailing 17-13 late in the fourth quarter. That's when quarterback Heath Shuler lobbed a pass down the sideline to wide receiver Randall Hill, who jumped up and caught it, slipped past the Bears defender covering him, and took off down the sideline. He scored the game-winning touchdown from 89 yards out, which you can watch for yourself right here.It was a really impressive moment at a time when the Saints were running short in them. Hill left the NFL after the 1997 season at just 28 years of age, and Ditka was out of New Orleans just a few years later (and he eventually wound up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame). There's a lot to be said for coming away with a win against Ditka's former team in such a high-profile Sunday night game during his first year on the job. This article originally appeared on Saints Wire: Randall Hill's 89-yard game winning TD is the Saints Play of the Day0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReliable journalist: Why Bayern ‘never pushed’ for Man City starReliable journalist: Why Bayern ‘never pushed’ for Man City starManchester City centre-back Josko Gvardiol is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium.Gvardiol joined Manchester City in the summer of 2023 and has already made over 120 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 goals.Following Pep Guardiola’s departure, several players’ futures came under the spotlight, with Gvardiol linked to a potential move to Bayern Munich and clubs in Spain.Bayern Munich were interested in Josko GvardiolThe Croatian is regarded as a top-class centre-back, and like other elite clubs, Bayern registered their interest, although they were well aware of how difficult it would be to prise him away from Manchester City.Christian Falk previously shared to CFBayern Insider that Gvardiol would like to return to the Bundesliga one day. Lothar Matthaus also suggested that Bayern were considering a move for the centre-back.However, the German giants knew any deal would be expensive, with reports indicating a fee in the region of £60.5m-£64.8m.Bayern were also aware that Manchester City had already tabled a lucrative long-term contract offer, and that the Croatian defender may consider staying at the club.Josko Gvardiol new deal – blow for Bayern? It has been widely reported that Gvardiol has now signed a new contract that will keep him at Manchester City until 2031.He is viewed as a key player by sporting director Hugo Viana and is set to play a major role under incoming manager Enzo Maresca. Is this a blow for Bayern? Not at all.The Bavarians did not make any concrete attempt to sign him.Christian Falk has exclusively told CFBayern Insider that Bayern are now concentrating on other targets — Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari — and are close to achieving their goals in those pursuits. The German champions will only consider signing a new centre-back if they manage to offload either Hiroki Ito, Kim Min-jae, or both. Both Ito and Min-jae have started the World Cup strongly for their countries. Should they continue to impress throughout the tournament, Bayern could demand a significant fee for either player.Only then, if squad space and finances allow, would Bayern look to bring in a new centre-back.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMiami Dolphins Q&A: 10 Questions That Will Define 2026, Part 1 of 10MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins have not won a playoff game since December of 2000.But in September they'll begin a new era.General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, coach Jeff Hafley and quarterback Malik Willis all come to South Florida from Green Bay.Miami hopes to build around running back De'Von Achane, center Aaron Brewer, linebacker Jordyn Brooks and a handful of youngsters like Kadyn Proctor, Kenneth Grant, Chris Johnson, Patrick Paul and Jacob Rodriguez. For now, there are far more questions than answers. But our Joe Schad hopes to set the table for the rebuild with 10 questions that will define the 2026 Dolphins season.Part 1 of 10: Miami Dolphins' 2026 Q&A with Joe SchadThe Question: How many Dolphins wins is realistic in 2026?The Answer: In 2019, the Dolphins exceeded expectations in a rebuild season under Brian Flores by winning five games. That should be Miami's target for Jeff Hafley's first season ― five wins. The over/under for most of this offseason for Miami has been 4.5 wins. So 5-12 is an over-performance. It also matches the way-too-early prediction we made on the day Miami's schedule was released. The Dolphins have one of the most difficult schedules in the NFL in 2026. They will also have one of the NFL's youngest team. That's a less-than-ideal match. We predicted Miami to defeat the: Raiders, Jets, Colts, Jets and Bears. In this scenario, Miami would start the season 2-4 and 5-8 before losing the final four games to finish 5-12.Nobody should judge Sullivan, Hafley, Willis or the Dolphins by their win-loss record in 2026. Would 6-11 or 7-10 be outstanding? Well, yeah, sure. Would 3-14 or 4-13 be disastrous? Nope. As long as Miami plays hard and demonstrates young player development, 2026 is a win.Miami Dolphins NFL Draft: Top 5 Instant Impact rookiesMiami Dolphins' Zach Sieler: New staff delivers 'candid truth.'Chris Simms: Take Malik Willis over Aaron Rodgers.Joe Schad is a journalist covering the Miami Dolphins and the NFL at The Palm Beach Post. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Clarke to drop Shankland for Christie or McLean' - McCallIt's Tuesday, 16 June 2026.If we rewind 36 years to 16 June 1990 and the Italian city of Genoa, Stuart McCall was busy scoring to help Scotland secure a 2-1 win over Sweden. The former midfielder jokes that he "was always deadly from a yard out" and ultimately that victory wasn't enough to ensure Scotland progressed to the knock-out stage, but up until this weekend, it was their last win at a World Cup finals. Now the 62 year-old is assistant to Paul Heckingbottom at Preston North End, but he's also enjoying absorbing all the action from the United States, Canada and Mexico. As a former Motherwell manager, he's been glad to see the Steelmen's Elijah Just scoring a brace for New Zealand in their 2-2 draw with Iran, but chiefly he's delighted that Scotland now have a more up-to-date World Cup win to look back on, albeit a nervy 1-0 triumph over Haiti."If you look at the celebrations that have been going on since the game, if we'd played brilliant football and created 20 chances but drawn 1-1, there wouldn't be the feeling there is going about the country at the moment," McCall told Radio Scotland Breakfast.Next up, it's Morocco in Boston on Friday and McCall, who won 40 caps between 1990 and 1998, is quietly confident."I've seen people say [head coach] Steve Clarke might go to a back five," he said."I don't see that. You need to get at least a bit of creative spark on the park, so I think Ben Gannon-Doak will start. "I would imagine they'll take Lawrence Shankland out and add another midfielder, whether that's Ryan Christie or Kenny McLean, who could sit in with Lewis Ferguson and let Scott McTominay play as a number 10 a bit further forward."It's going to be a difficult game, but the expectation levels are not the same as they were against Haiti. Against Morocco, we need a point. You can never set out to get a point, but that would be enough."0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFA chief outlines stance on Gianni Infantino’s controversial run for Fifa re-electionThe Football Association will decide their position on another term for Fifa president Gianni Infantino during a “board review... in due course”, according to chief executive Mark Bullingham.A number of federations have already endorsed the controversial Swiss official, despite numerous issues around this World Cup and growing dissent within Fifa as a consequence. The Independent reported last week that multiple sources had spoken of impressions being made on them to support Infantino. Gianni Infantino has been criticised for getting too close to Donald Trump (AFP/Getty)They also come amid some misgivings about term limits, given that the Fifa president again being re-elected in 2027 without challenge would ensure he eventually completes 15 years in the role – precisely the kind of longevity that predecessors Sepp Blatter and Joao Havelange had been criticised for. There is a growing feeling that Infantino has pushed the constants of his position too far, most notably in the proximity to the Donald Trump administration and the awarding of the Fifa Peace Prize.Bullingham nevertheless stated that the FA have not yet set out their position. “That’s a board review that we will do in due course,” the chief executive told media at England’s Kansas City base.Infantino is seeking re-election (Reuters)Mark Bullingham (right) says he will wait for an FA board review before committing to a stance on Gianni Infantino (Getty)There has been some frustration within fan groups like the Football Supporters Association that the FA have not used their position to be more vocal on ticket prices, which has been one of the major issues at this World Cup. The body would insist that their lobbying helped bring the introduction of the cheaper Category 4 tickets, although a further issue is that there have been so few of them, only going to the dedicated fans that attend the majority of away games.“All our fans are important to us but the most important fans are the top cappers who follow us everywhere,” Bullingham said. “My understanding is the vast majority of them are going to be able to make it. I think the $60 ticket has had a positive effect on that. If you add it up throughout the tournament it’s 130,000 so it is a concession. “Among the top cappers, you certainly want them there, they generate the atmosphere and as I understand it the vast majority of them will be able to make it.“We’re really confident this World Cup will be a success, I understand that before any major sports event – Olympics, World Cup, whatever – there’s a lot of stories that are flying around. Once the football starts in earnest it will be a success, the country will get behind it and our fans that do come out will have a great experience.”Many England fans have travelled out to North America for the World Cup (Reuters)Asked whether the FA’s position on Infantino was in any way determined by this World Cup’s success or failure, and meeting projected revenues of $14bn, Bullingham pointed to wider Fifa politics.“It’s funny though, when you look at it through the lens of other countries, there’s a lot of countries for whom Fifa is their main source of revenue,” added Bullingham. “So their priority is raising money. “Obviously we’re fortunate enough that the Fifa money that we get is a relatively small proportion of our money. I think it’s 0.5 per cent or something like that. For other countries, I’d say it’s probably 70-80 per cent. So if someone’s increasing their revenue, obviously it allows them to do more sport development, so they’d have a different perspective.”0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLos Angeles Memorial Coliseum transforms for World Cup fan festivalThe Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is home to USC football games. This past weekend, however, it hosted a very different type of football.Last week marked the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For the opening weekend of action, the Coliseum hosted a fan festival. Fans at the event had the opportunity to watch the games on big screens, participate in activations, and try food and drinks from different countries participating in the tournament. The festival was a massive success. I was able to attend for the United States-Paraguay game on Friday, and the atmosphere was electric. The fans were loud and passionate, and it genuinely felt like a big soccer party. And yes, we are calling it soccer. With all due respect to FIFA and the rest of the world, there is only one true football, and it is the sport played every fall in the United States that USC has won 11 national championships in.The good news is real football will be back before we know it. For the next month, however, fans should appreciate the historic nature of the biggest tournament in the world coming to the United States for the first time in 32 years. This article originally appeared on Trojans Wire: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hosts FIFA World Cup fan festival0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM2026 U.S. Open: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson among biggest names not competing in the major this week at ShinnecockIt's time for the U.S. Open, which is back at Shinnecock Hills outside of New York City this week. All eyes, of course, will be on Scottie Scheffler and his quest to claim the career grand slam with a U.S. Open victory. Back-to-back Masters champion Rory McIlroy and several other big names from LIV Golf, including PGA Championship runner-up Jon Rahm, are expected to be in the mix, too. But, of course, there are several notable golfers that are sitting this major out. Here's a look at some of the biggest names who did not make the trip to New York this week.Tiger WoodsTiger Woods may be back in the United States, but he's still away from the game. Woods was involved in a rollover crash and arrested in Florida earlier this year after he collided with a pickup truck and rolled his Range Rover. There were no injuries, but Woods was arrested and charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He has since entered a plea of not guilty.Woods then stepped away from golf to seek treatment, which he reportedly did in Switzerland in recent months. Woods was spotted back in Florida on Friday. He has missed both the Masters and the PGA Championship this season as a result. It's unclear when Woods will attempt to play competitively again, though he's not played much at all in recent years. Woods ruptured his Achilles and underwent a back surgery in 2025. He did return to play in the TGL indoor final in March. Woods has won the U.S. Open three times in his career, first in 2000 and again in 2002. He last won in 2008 at Torrey Pines, when he beat Rocco Mediate in a wild 19-hole playoff despite a major leg injury. Phil MickelsonPhil Mickelson is also not playing competitive golf right now while dealing with what he’s described as a personal family health matter.Mickelson has competed in just a single LIV Golf event this season, and he announced before the Masters that he was stepping away. He did not get into specifics.Mickelson was initially listed in the PGA Championship field last month, but he quickly withdrew and said he "unfortunately" couldn't play. It's unclear when he'll be able to return.Mickelson was also reportedly expelled from his Southern California golf club earlier this year after he allegedly made "nonconsensual and inappropriate physical contact" with a female employee before a round. Mickelson's team described it as a "misunderstanding" that has been cleaned up, and said he "continues to attend to a family health matter."Mickelson has never won the U.S. Open in his career, though he's come close several times. He's finished in second on six separate occasions, most recently in 2013, though Mickelson has missed the cut at the last five outings. It is the last tournament he needs to claim the career grand slam. His previous five-year exemption into the U.S. Open, which he earned for his 2021 PGA Championship win, has also expired. So if Mickelson wants to play in the U.S. Open again, he'll have to earn his spot like everybody else.Max Homa missed out on qualifying for the U.S. Open this spring. (Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images)Minas Panagiotakis via Getty ImagesMax HomaMax Homa came so close to a return trip to the U.S. Open. Homa tried to qualify for the major championship during Golf's Longest Day earlier this month, and he made it into a playoff at a qualifier in Canada. He had a 12-footer on the first playoff hole, but the putt just barely lipped out. That took him out of the running. Homa, who reached as high as No. 5 in the Official World Golf Rankings, has won six times on the PGA Tour in his career, most recently at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open. He's missed the last two U.S. Opens, and he missed the cut in both 2023 and 2024, though Homa did pull out a T9 finish at the Masters earlier this year. That was, however, his only top-10 finish on the season.Marco PengeWhile not the biggest name in golf, Marco Penge is the highest-ranked player in the world that is not teeing it up this week in New York. Penge withdrew from the U.S. Open last week due to lingering health issues. He suffered a viral infection in November, and has been dealing with ear, neck and nervous system problems ever since. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship earlier this season, and was hit with a sinus infection that led to vertigo symptoms shortly before that major. Penge, at No. 48 in the OWGR, has yet to win on the PGA Tour but has three DP World Tour wins to his name — all three of which came in 2025. He last won the Open de Espana in November, and he finished T4 at the Valspar Championship in March for his best Tour outing of the year. It's unclear when Penge will get to play again.Tony FinauTony Finau is out of yet another major.Finau missed both the Masters and the PGA Championship earlier this season, which ended a streak of 33 straight major appearances. He tried to qualify for the U.S. Open earlier this month, but missed out by two strokes at Springfield Country Club (Ohio). If he can't find a way into the British Open, it'll mark the first season of his career that he failed to play in at least one major. Finau is currently at No. 109 in the OWGR. He's got two top-10 finishes in his last six U.S. Open outings, and he was in the final group at the U.S. Open the last time it was at Shinnecock in 2018. Finau ended up finishing fifth that year, six shots back from winner Brooks Koepka.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews
