AP WAS THERE: Journalists chronicled the Nazi surrenders and end of World War II in Europe
Some of the AP Paris staff join Paris Bureau Chief Ed Kennedy, seated center left, for a farewell get-together in the early hours of May 18, 1945, just before he embarked for the United States at the request of AP General Manager Kent Cooper. (AP Photo/Pete Carroll, File)2025-05-07T09:57:30Z REIMS, France (AP) When Allied forces brought World War II in Europe and the Holocaust to an end 80 years ago this week, AP reporters and photographers were there, chronicling the Nazis historic defeat. Here are excerpts of AP news reports that momentous week:___EDITORS NOTE: On May 7, 1945, APs Edward Kennedy witnessed the German surrender in a French schoolhouse, and was the first to announce it to the Allied public, defying authorities who wanted to delay the news. The news was broadcast unofficially over German radio, but U.S. President Harry Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had agreed to suppress news of the capitulation for a day, in order to allow Soviet leader Josef Stalin to stage a second surrender ceremony in Berlin.Kennedy published anyway, angering U.S. authorities. Kennedy was called home by AP and later fired. AP issued a public apology in 2012, saying Kennedy did everything just right, because the embargo was for political reasons, not to protect the troops. The world needed to know, APs then-President and CEO Tom Curley said. Kennedy stood up to power. ___ REIMS, France, May 7 (Delayed)FLASH: ALLIES OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED GERMANS SURRENDERED UNCONDITIONALLY___Through an iron-faced Prussian general, speaking after he had finished signing the unconditional surrender of the Nazis, Germany today pleaded for mercy for the German people. On the wall behind his back was a huge chart tabulating Allied casualties. He was Col-Gen. (Alfred) Jodl, chief of staff of the German Army.He was standing in a room of a red school house in Reims, where Gen. Eisenhower had his advanced headquarters. On a big wooden table in front of him lay four identical documents to which he had just affixed his signature one each for the United States, Britain, France and Russia. ...Seventeen correspondents were present at the signing and heard Jodls plea. After he had signed the four instruments of surrender, and after the military representatives of the four Powers had signed them, Jodl asked for permission to speak. He was told that he might. He held himself stiffly erect. His voice was low and soft. He said: With this signature, the German people and armed forces are, for better or worse, delivered in the victors hands. In this war which has lasted more than five years, both have achieved and suffered more than perhaps any other people in the world. I express the hope that the victor will treat generously with them. His face was expressionless. So were the faces of the American, British, Russian and French generals who represented the Allies. All had seen the German murder camps and all knew the furious cruelty of German occupying forces.Jodl finished speaking and sat down. A moment passed in dead silence. Then the German representatives were taken down the hall to meet Gen. Eisenhower. ....Again, there was a moment of heavy silence. Then Eisenhower spoke. He was brief and terse as always. His voice was cold and stern. His steel blue eyes were hard. In a few clipped sentences, he made it plain that Germany was a defeated nation and that henceforth all orders to the German people would come from the Allies. He said they would be obeyed. Then the Germans filed out. It was over.Nazi Germany has ceased to exist. The war had ended.___The great bells of St. Peters Basilica rang out over Rome soon after the Associated Press report that peace had come to Europe, while several Allied capitals proclaimed V-E holidays for today, and Tokyo announced continuation of The Sacred War.Many of the worlds cities went wild at the news, and even neutral capitals were bedecked and filled with celebrating crowds. Masses of people gathered in front of loudspeakers and newspaper offices, which were frantically answering inquiries and rolling out extras.Only in the unnatural calm of the European fronts was the news reported to have been taken soberly, by soldiers who had seen the fighting taper off in one sector after another for the past two weeks. ___War-scarred London burst into jubilant celebration of the end of the war in Europe today, its millions of citizens unable to wait for the governments official V-E Day proclamation tomorrow.Millions surged into the streets, from Buckingham Palace to the sedate East End.The Picadilly Circus, Whitehall and Westminster areas filled with a laughing, shouting throng. Some old-timers said the scene eclipsed those of the 1918 armistice.Pubs were jammed, Champagne was brought up from deep cellars and long-hoarded whisky and gin came out from hiding. The great bells of Big Ben tolled the hours of the historic day.___In Washington, crowds gathered in Lafayette Square across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House in anticipation of an announcement by President Truman to proclaim Allied V-E Day. A dispatch from the United States 9th Army front said withdrawal of American troops toward a previously established line of demarcation between them and the Russians had begun, with the first-move evacuation of the Yanks from their bridgehead of the banks of the Elbe River. The Elbe became the temporary line between the Allied armies.___BERLIN, May 10, 1945:By HAROLD KING, former Moscow bureau chiefThis town is a city of the dead. As a metropolis, it has simply ceased to exist. Every house within miles of the center seems to have had its own bomb. The scene beggars description. I have seen Stalingrad; I have lived through the entire London blitz. I have seen a dozen badly damaged Russian towns, but the scene of utter destruction, desolation and death which meets the eye in Berlin as far as the eye can rove in all directions is something that almost baffles description.Dozens of well-known thoroughfares, including the entire Unter den Linden from one end to the other, are wrecked beyond repair. The town is literally unrecognizable. The Alexander Platz, in the east end, where the Gestapo headquarters were, is a weird desert of rubble and gaping, smoke blackened walls. From the Brandenberg Gate, everything within a radius of two to five miles is destroyed. There does not appear to be one house in hundred which is even useful as a shelter. ...The only people who look like human beings in the streets of what was Berlin are the Russian soldiers. There are two million inhabitants in this town, the Russian authorities told me, but they are mostly in the remoter suburbs. In the center part of the town, you only see a few ghostlike figures of women and children few men queuing up to pump water. If Stalingrad, London, Guernica, Rotterdam, Coventry wanted avenging, they have had it, and no mistake about it.The Red flag, or rather several red flags, fly on top of the Reichstag which is burned hollow. The Tiergarten opposite the Reichstag looks like a forest after a big fire. There was heavy street fighting here. ...The population and the Red Army soldiers are attempting to clear some of the main streets. The Russian command has already erected at all main squares and crossings huge sketch maps without which it would be impossible to find ones way about.Except for an occasional Russian army car or horses drawing Russian army carts, there is a complete silence over the city, and the air filled with rubble dust. One sign of life, however, are the interminable columns of displaced persons of all European nationalities who seem to be marching through Berlin in various directions, carried forward by a homing instinct more than any clear idea where they are going. These columns of freed slaves are sometimes a mile long.___Follow APs coverage marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II at https://apnews.com/WorldWarII

National Endowment For The Arts Lays Off 30,000 Muses
WASHINGTONIn a move the Trump administration claims will reduce government waste and remove redundancies from federally funded programs, the National Endowment for the Arts announced a sweeping round of layoffs Wednesday that terminated the employment of roughly 30,000 muses. An independent audit of the NEA revealed a significant glut of unnecessary sources of inspiration, all of which are reliant on taxpayer funding, read a statement from the White House addressing the cuts, which are said to include an additional 35% reduction in the ingenues, figure drawing models, and strikingly beautiful baristas currently providing full-time inspiration to the agency. This unchecked creativity has gone on for far too long, and our independent audit of the agency found that the NEA can easily make do with a mere dozen muses. Under this new budget, American taxpayers will no longer be forced to foot the bill for the inflated levels of inspiration formerly enjoyed by lazy poets, novelists, and painters. The statement went on to advocate for additional budget cuts that would eliminate the agencys 10,000 superfluous copies ofThe Artists Way.The post National Endowment For The Arts Lays Off 30,000 Muses appeared first on The Onion.

Teacher Can Tell Child With Spiky Hair, Sunglasses Comes From A Rad Home
TUCSON, AZExpressing concerns after she observed several of the telltale warning signs, fourth-grade teacher Patricia Cormac told reporters Wednesday that she could tell a student in her class with spiky hair and sunglasses came from a rad home. When youve been in this profession as long as I have, little behavioral tics like skateboarding into school 10 minutes late or repeatedly hitting classmates with a thumbs-ups can be a red flagthat a child is experiencing some totally sick behavior behind the scenes, said Cormac, confirming that her suspicions began when she saw markings around her students arms and shoulders that were likely left by a badass temporary tattoo of a dinosaur. At this point, its too early to say how severe the situation is. It could just be that the family is going through a pretty awesome period and things will settle back to normal, but it could be something larger. I remember we had a case a couple years ago where it turned out a student had nothing to eat at home but Mountain Dew Code Red and triple pepperoni pizzas with extra cheese. Cormac added that in this case it was likely a social worker would eventually be called in to do a chillness check. The post Teacher Can Tell Child With Spiky Hair, Sunglasses Comes From A Rad Home appeared first on The Onion.

    The AI Slop Presidency
Trump has found an aesthetic to define his second term: grotesque AI slop.Over the weekend, the Trump administration posted at least seven different pieces of AI generated or AI altered media, ranging from Trump imagining himself as a pope and a Star Wars Jedi (or Sith?) to Obama-esque Hope posters featuring people the administration has deported. This has become the Slop Presidency, and AI-generated images are the perfect artistic medium for the Trump presidency. They're impulsively created, grotesque, and low-effort. Trumpworlds fascination with slop is the logical next step for a President that, in his first term, regularly retweeted random memes created by his army of supporters on Discord or The Donald, a subreddit that ultimately became a Reddit-clone website after it was banned. AI allows his team to create media that would never exist otherwise, a particularly useful tool for a President and administration that has a hostile relationship with reality.Trumps original fascination with AI slop began last summer, after he said legal Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating the catstheyre eating the pets in his debate with Kamala Harris. The internets AI slop factories began spinning up images of Trump as cat-and-dog savior. Since then, Trump and the administration have occasionally shared or reposted AI slop. In his first week in office, Trump shared an AI-generated GM car image that was promoting $TRUMP coin. What a beautiful car. Congrats to GM!, he posted. At the end of February, Trump shared a video on his Truth Social account that imagined a world where Gaza was turned into a Trump Casino. But this weekend, Trump began sharing AI slop on a level weve not seen before.Trumps AI-tinged weekend began on Friday night with a photo-realistic picture of himself as the Pope on his Truth Social account. The White House reposted a screenshot of the image on X, which pissed off the Catholic Church. This is deeply offensive to Catholics especially during this sacred time that we are still mourning the death of Pope Francis and praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the election of our new Pope. He owes an apology, Thomas Paprocki, an American Bishop in Illinois, said on X.During a press conference on Monday, Trump dismissed the accusation that the Trump Pope was offensive and then said he didnt post it. The Catholics loved it. I had nothing to do with it, Trump said. Somebody made up a picture of me dressed like the Pope and they put it out on the internet, Trump said. Thats not me that did it, I have no idea where it came from. Maybe it was AI. But I know nothing about it. I just saw it last evening. All political movements are accompanied by artists who translate the politics into pictures, writing, and music. Adolf Ziegler captured the Nazi ideal in paintings. Stalins Soviet Union churned out mass produced and striking propaganda posters that wanted citizens about how to live. The MAGA movements artistic aesthetic is AI slop and Donald Trump is its king. It is not concerned with convincing anyone or using art to inform people about its movement. It seeks only to upset people who arent on board and excite the faithful because it upsets people. Not content to just aggravate Catholics, the Trump administration then used AI to offend adherents of another of Americas major religions: Star Wars fans. On May the 4th, the official White House X account posted an AI-generated image of a muscle bound Trump wielding a red light saber and flanked by two bald eagles.Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to to [sic] bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, & well known MS-13 Gang Members, back into our Galaxy. Youre not the Rebellionyoure the Empire, it said in the post. May the 4th be with you. As the replies pointed out, red light sabers are typically used by villains. This was just one of a series of Star Wars related AI-generated cringe that went out from official Trump admin accounts over the weekend. DOD Rapid Response on X (an account that publishes propaganda on behalf of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth) posted a five minute video that contained a Star Wars intro style scroll of Trumps accomplishments before treating viewers to a pic of Trump and Hegseth as Jedi. The account for the U.S. Armys Pacific Command sent out an AI-enhanced image of soldiers doing a training exercise. Both of the soldierss weapons were replaced with lightsabers.Trump and the people who created AI-image generators do not respect artists. There is no style that either will not exploit or sully. OpenAI reduced Hayao Miyazaki's lifes work to a gross meme, and the White House played along. For years the Lofi Girl has sat in windows on screens across the planet while people studied, read, and worked. Over the weekend the White House YouTube channel ran Lo-Fi MAGA Video to Relax/ Study To while an animated President Trump sat at a desk, mimicking the Lofi Girl.Maybe you dont like Star Wars, are unmoved by Studio Ghibli films, or have never chilled to lofi beats. It doesnt matter, the message is clear: if you love something Trump will pervert it. Nothing will be untouched. Sacred objects and beloved art exist only to be desecrated. AI has made that as easy as pushing a button.AI generated slop content is part of a brute force attack on the algorithms that control reality and the Trump administrations constant use of AI art reflects its own brute force attack on American democracy. Its not just that its aesthetics are useful for Trump, its entire mode of being is useful for how his administration has governed so far, by brute forcing the Presidency with a slew of executive orders, budget cuts, attacks on institutions, and sloppily executed deportations. The strategy is to overwhelm the American bureaucracy and the legal system, and to exhaust his enemies with an endless stream of bullshit; by the time we shake out whats legal and whats not, much of the damage has already been done. One of the wonderful things about making art is the process. A lot happens between conception and execution. An idea pops into an artist's head and it changes dramatically while they attempt to render that idea into reality. That doesnt happen with AI-generated images. There is no creation process, there is only instant gratification. Whatever impulsive and grotesque thought pops into the mind of the creator can immediately be realized. And so every revenge fantasy Trump and his followers ever wanted can be made real at a moments notice. On March 27, the White House X account posted a Ghibli-style AI image of a crying woman being arrested by ICE.Here is a real woman who has been accused of a crime, her image appropriated by the state and rendered into a cartoon. America has total power over this woman. Arrested for drug trafficking, her image has been plastered all over the internet. Shell be deported. Not content with total control over her body and future, the administration has made her into a caricature and invited its followers to mock her online.

Dora the Explorer Teaches About Sigma, an Extremely Toxic Male Aspiration
Dora the Explorer, the cute Nickelodeon cartoon character, is teaching kids what it means to be Sigma, a slang term describing an extremely toxic male archetype which originates in the darkest corners of the so-called manosphere.Hola, grown-ups! Today I have a super cool word for you! Sigma, a 3D rendered version of Dora says in a video uploaded to the official Dora the Explorer Instagram account yesterday. Sigma is a word for someone whos confident, independent, and does things their own way! Think of it as someone whos a leader and a trendsetter. Lets say your friend is doing their own thing, focusing on their goals, and not worrying about what others think. You can say, youre such a SIGMA! View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dora (@officialdora) As Dora explains this, the video cuts to different Nickelodeon characters like Spongebob Squarepants and Aang, the main character from Avatar: The Last Airbender. The video, which was also shared from the official Nickelodeon Instagram account, has 2.8 million views, 156,000 likes, and almost 7,000 comments, most of which are incredulous or joking about Dora defining a term even mildly online users recognize as inappropriate for children.Dora thats not even Spanish youre losing the PLOT, one user said.Doras definition of Sigma isnt wrong, but its missing some very important context. In the world of toxic masculinity, incelhood, and the manosphere, men fit into one of a few rigid categories. There are Beta males, who are viewed as weak, effeminate, and generally losers who cant get women, and Alpha males who are strong, masculine, and can dominate women as well as other beta males. And then there are Sigma males, who are so masculine they ascend these categories and the normal social hierarchies and become something more powerful. It is very similar and sometimes overlaps with the community of Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW).Know Your Meme attributes the origin of the term to the far-right misogynist and white supremacist Theodore Beale, known mostly for his online persona Vox Day. In 2010, Beale defined Sigmas on his blog as:The outsiders who don't play the social game and manage to win at it anyhow. The alphas hate sigmas because they are the only men who don't accept or at least acknowledge their social dominance. (NB: Alphas absolutely hate to be laughed at and a sigma can enrage an alpha by simply smiling at him.) Everyone else is vaguely confused by them. At the party, it's the guy who stops by to say hello to a few friends accompanied by a tier one girl that no one has ever seen before. Sigmas often like women, but also tend to be contemptuous of them.To be fair, Sigma went through another evolution before Doras video. It is now part of the brainrot meta meme, which takes a bunch of online terms like Skibidi, Rizz, and Sigma, and blends them all into a soup which is regurgitate in various forms to express that you spent too much time on the internet and can prove that by referencing these words.I dont know if Nickelodeon or the people in charge of these social media accounts are ignorant of Sigmas origin, if they dont care, or if its some irony-poisoned cynical wink at an audience that is obviously responding to the provocation.I can easily imagine this being a case of brands trying to be and online for engagement but going too far, especially because its workingthis post is getting a lot more engagement than most things the Dora account has posted. It also reminds me of something thats been bugging me for months but I have not had an excuse to write about yet, which is that the TV brand TCL has been promoting its products with ads calling their customers gooners and inviting them to goon with their TVs. Technically, TCL is an official partner with the Arsenal Football Club, which has called its fans gooners for years, but the TCL posts are obviously playing on the fact that today, at least online, gooning more commonly refers to the practice of hedonistic masturbation and excessive porn consumption. TCL also invites its customers to be Alpha.Ultimately it doesnt matter if the Dora post is a mistake that cant tell the difference between skibidi toilet and a racist Pepe the Frog, or if its an ironic joke. While the video addresses grown-ups, Dora is a giant kids media brand, and she is currently introducing them to a toxic philosophy that glorifies misogyny and the desire to be above and outside social relationships.Nickelodeon did not respond to a request for comment.

Fighter jet goes overboard from USS Harry S Truman. Yemens Houthis assess Sanaa airport damage
This frame grab from a handout video provided by the Ansar Allah Media Office shows smoke billowing from civilian aircraft following Israeli airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport in Sanaa, Yemen, Tuesday, May 6, 2025.(Courtesy of Ansar Allah Media Office via AP)2025-05-07T07:38:47Z DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) An F/A-18 fighter jet landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea went overboard, forcing its two pilots to eject, a defense official told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The incident Tuesday marks the latest mishap to mar the deployment of the Truman, which has been essential in the airstrike campaign by the United States against Yemens Houthi rebels. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Omans foreign minister both said that a ceasefire had been reached with the Houthis, who would no longer target ships in the Red Sea corridor something not immediately acknowledged by the rebels.Meanwhile, the Houthis continue to assess the damage after daytime Israeli airstrikes targeted Yemens rebel-held capital of Sanaa. Landing goes wrong on carrierThe F/A-18 Super Hornet landed on the Truman after a flight, but the arrestment failed, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they werent authorized to speak publicly about the incident now under investigation.Arrestment refers to the hook system used by aircraft landing on carriers, which catches steel wire ropes on the flight deck. It remains unclear what part of the system failed. The two pilots on board were later rescued by a helicopter and suffered minor injuries in the incident, the official added. No one on the flight deck was hurt.CNN first reported on the incident. Tuesdays incident was the latest to see the Navy lose an F/A-18, which cost about $60 million. In April, another F/A-18 fighter jet slipped off the hangar deck of the Truman and fell into the Red Sea. The crew members who were in the pilot seat of the Super Hornet and on the small towing tractor both jumped away. In December, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg mistakenly shot down an F/A-18 after ships earlier shot down multiple Houthi drones and an anti-ship cruise missile launched by the rebels. Both aviators in that incident also survived. And in February, the Truman collided with a merchant vessel near Port Said, Egypt. The Truman, based out of Norfolk, Virginia, has seen its deployment extended multiple times amid the Houthi airstrike campaign. It had been joined recently by the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier operating out of the Arabian Sea. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on the social platform X that an investigation was underway and that this aircraft was not struck by the Houthis. The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group remains fully mission-capable, he added.Rebels survey Sanaas devastated airportThe Israeli attack on Tuesday that targeted Sanaa International Airport devastated the airfield. Khaled al-Shaif, the head of the airport, told the Houthis al-Masirah satellite news channel that the Israeli strike destroyed the airports terminal and left craters in its runway. At least six passenger planes were struck, including three belonging to Yemenia Airways, the countrys flag-carrying airline, he said. That leaves the airline with only one functional aircraft, which was spared only because it had left earlier in the day on a flight to Amman, Jordan. He put overall damage there at $500 million. With the damage, the airport was now out of service, al-Shaif said. Houthi attacks on shippingThe Houthis had been waging persistent missile and drone attacks against commercial and military ships in the region in what the groups leadership has described as an effort to end Israels offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. From November 2023 until January 2025, the Houthis targeted more than 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two of them and killing four sailors. That has greatly reduced the flow of trade through the Red Sea corridor, which typically sees $1 trillion of goods move through it annually. The Houthis paused attacks in a self-imposed ceasefire until the U.S. launched a broad assault against the rebels in mid-March. Turkish Tufts University student detained by ICE can be sent to Vermont, appeals court rules
Hundreds of people gather in Somerville, Mass., on March 26, 2025, to demand the release of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish student at Tufts University, who was arrested by federal agents Tuesday night. (AP Photo/Michael Casey, File)2025-05-07T15:24:24Z A federal appeals court on Wednesday granted a judges order to bring a Turkish Tufts University student from a Louisiana immigration detention center back to New England for hearings to determine whether her rights were violated.A judicial panel of the New York-based U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in the case of Rumeysa Ozturk after lawyers representing her and the U.S. Justice Department presented arguments at a hearing Tuesday. Ozturk has been detained in Louisiana for six weeks following an op-ed she co-wrote last year that criticized the schools response to Israels war in Gaza. The court ordered Ozturk to be transferred to ICE custody in Vermont no later than May 14.A district court judge in Vermont had earlier ordered that the 30-year-old doctoral student be brought to the state for hearings to determine whether she was illegally detained. Ozturks lawyers say her detention violates her constitutional rights, including free speech and due process. The Justice Department, which appealed that ruling, said that an immigration court in Louisiana has jurisdiction over her case. Immigration officials surrounded Ozturk as she walked along a street in a Boston suburb March 25 and drove her to New Hampshire and Vermont before putting her on a plane to a detention center in Basile, Louisiana.Ozturk was one of four students who wrote an op-ed in the campus newspaper, The Tufts Daily, last year criticizing the universitys response to student activists demanding that Tufts acknowledge the Palestinian genocide, disclose its investments and divest from companies with ties to Israel.A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in March, without providing evidence, that investigations found that Ozturk engaged in activities in support of Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group.

Utah Mammoth is the permanent name of the NHL team in Salt Lake City
This graphic provided by the Smith Entertainment Group shows the new logo and branding for Utahs NHL hockey club, now called the Utah Mammoth. (Smith Entertainment Group via AP)2025-05-07T14:02:51Z The NHL team in Salt Lake City is now known as the Utah Mammoth.Owners Ryan and Ashley Smith unveiled the franchises permanent name Wednesday after more than a year of fan input and voting. From Day 1, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate todays launch with the entire state, they said in a statement announcing the name. The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from and the unstoppable force were building together. Mammoth replaces the inaugural season placeholder name Utah Hockey Club, which was also one of the three finalists. Yeti was taken out of consideration when the cooler company bearing that name could not come to a copyright agreement with Utah ownership, and Wasatch a reference to the states mountain range was quickly replaced as an option by Outlaws. The Mammoth are maintaining the same black, light blue and white color scheme and the road jerseys with UTAH diagonally down the front. The logo includes a nod to the mountains, the shape of the state and a curved tusk that forms a U. Mammoth fossils have been found throughout Utah, including a complete skeleton in Huntington Canyon in 1988. The team said Tusks Up will be its rallying cry.Utah has an exciting summer ahead holding the fourth pick in the draft, the first phase of arena renovations taking place and more than $20 million in salary cap space for general manager Bill Armstrong to make a splash in free agency and trades. With young talent like captain Clayton Keller, budding star forward Logan Cooley, two-time Stanley Cup champion Mikhail Sergachev and emerging goaltender Karel Vejmelka, the Mammoth could contend for a playoff spot as soon as next season. The rebranding comes less than 13 months since Smith Entertainment group bought the team previously known as the Arizona Coyotes from former owner Alex Meruelo and moved it to Salt Lake City. The Coyotes played in the Phoenix area since 1996 after moving there from Winnipeg, where the team was the original Jets.___AP NHL: https://apnews.com/NHL STEPHEN WHYNO Whyno has covered the NHL, Washington Capitals, the NFLs Washington Commanders and horse racing for The Associated Press since 2016. twitter facebook

Republican concedes long-unsettled North Carolina court election to Democratic incumbent
Judge Jefferson Griffin, the Republican candidate for the N.C. Supreme Court listens to testimony in Wake County Superior Court on Friday, February 7, 2025 in Raleigh, N.C. (Robert Willett/The News & Observer via AP, File)2025-05-07T14:04:32Z RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The Republican challenger for a North Carolina Supreme Court seat conceded last Novembers election on Wednesday to Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs, two days after a federal judge ruled that potentially thousands of disputed ballots challenged by Jefferson Griffin must remain in the final tally. In a statement provided by his campaign to The Associated Press, Griffin said he would not appeal Mondays decision by U.S. District Judge Richard Myers, who also ordered that the State Board of Elections certify results that show Riggs is the winner by 734 votes from over 5.5 million ballots cast in the race. Griffins decision sets the stage for Riggs to be officially elected to an eight-year term as an associate justice. While I do not fully agree with the District Courts analysis, I respect the courts holding just as I have respected every judicial tribunal that has heard this case, Griffin said. I will not appeal the courts decision. Myers delayed carrying out his order for seven days in case Griffin wanted to ask the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to review his decision. Democrats, meanwhile, had called on Griffin to accept defeat. Riggs is one of two Democrats on the seven-member state Supreme Court, and winning improved the partys efforts to retake a court majority later in the decade. Griffin is a state Court of Appeals judge whose term ends in 2028. I wish my opponent the best and will continue to pray for her and all the members of our court system here in North Carolina. I look forward to continuing to serve the people of North Carolina, Griffin said. While the Associated Press declared over 4,400 winners in the 2024 general election, the North Carolina Supreme Court election was the last race nationally that was undecided.Myers ruled that Griffins efforts after the Nov. 5 election to remove from the election total ballots that state appeals courts agreed were ineligible under state law would have damaged federal due process or equal protection rights of affected voters had they been implemented. Griffin filed formal protests that initially appeared to cover more than 65,000 ballots. Ensuing state court rulings whittled the total to votes from two categories, covering from as few as 1,675 ballots to as many as 7,000, according to court filings. Griffin hoped that removing ballots he said were unlawfully cast would flip the outcome to him.Democrats and voting rights groups had raised alarm about Griffins efforts, which in one category of ballots had only targeted six Democratic-leaning counties. They called it an attack on democracy that would serve as a road map for the GOP to reverse election results in other states. Griffin said Wednesday that his legal efforts were always about upholding the rule of law and making sure that every legal vote in an election is counted. Most of the ballots that state appeals courts found ineligible came from military or overseas voters who didnt provide copies of photo identification or an ID exception form with their absentee ballots. The appeals courts had permitted a 30-day cure process for those voters so their ballots could still count if they provided ID information. Myers, who was nominated to the bench by President Donald Trump, agreed with Riggs and her allied litigants that the retroactive invalidation of those ballots violated the rights of service members, missionaries, or others working or studying abroad who cast their ballots under the rules for the 2024 election. You establish the rules before the game. You dont change them after the game is done, Myers wrote in his order. The other category of ballots was cast by overseas voters who have never lived in the U.S. but whose parents were declared North Carolina residents. A state law had authorized those people to vote in state elections, but state appeals courts said it violated the state Constitution. Myers wrote that there was no process for people mistakenly on the list to contest their ineligibility, representing an unconstitutional burden on the right to vote.Griffin said Wednesday the rulings of state appeals judges still recognized that the state election board failed to follow laws and the state constitution. These holdings are very significant for securing our states elections, he said.

Moderna study shows immune response in older adults for a combo flu and COVID-19 shot
A vial of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine rests on a table at an inoculation station in Jackson, Miss., on July 19, 2022. (AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis, File)2025-05-07T15:00:14Z A combination shot for flu and COVID-19 using messenger RNA generated antibodies in a study, but U.S. government regulators want to see data on whether the new vaccine protects people from getting sick.Researchers from vaccine-maker Moderna reported in a study published Wednesday that the new combo shot generated a stronger immune response against COVID-19 and most strains of flu than existing standalone shots in people 50 and older. Side effects were injection site pain, fatigue and headaches. Moderna previously reported a summary of the results from the company-sponsored trial in 8,000 people. The mRNA technology is used in approved COVID-19 and RSV shots, but has not yet been approved for a flu shot. Moderna believes mRNA could speed up production of flu shots compared with traditional processes that use chicken eggs or giant vats of cells. A combo shot also might improve vaccination rates, the researchers wrote in the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Greg Poland, who studies vaccine response at Mayo Clinic and was not involved in the new study, said hes not convinced that a combo shot would be popular. And while flu comes in seasonal waves, COVID-19 has been spreading throughout the year, Poland said, posing challenges for how to time the shots to keep protection strong. Hed also like to see data on how well the new shot protected people from infection and hospitalization. The findings are based on measuring antibodies in participants blood after 29 days, an indication of short-term disease protection. Last week, Moderna pushed its target date for the vaccines approval to 2026 after the Food and Drug Administration requested a more direct measure: how much the shot lowered the risk of disease.I agree in this case with FDA that efficacy data are important to see, Poland said.Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has cast doubt on the safety of mRNA vaccines, but Moderna President Stephen Hoge told investors in an earnings call last week that talks with the FDA were productive and business as usual. Also last week, Novavax said the FDA was asking the company to run a new clinical trial of its protein-based COVID-19 vaccine after the agency grants full approval, sowing uncertainty about other vaccine updates.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institutes Science and Educational Media Group and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Signal Clone TeleMessage Deleted Video About How It WorksHeres What It Said
Earlier this week TeleMessage, the company that creates modified versions of messaging apps like Signal and adds an archiving ability to them, made a video private on its YouTube channel that explained how its Signal message archiving tool worked, and how the company says it is able to copy messages securely. The hiding of the video came after 404 Media revealed that a hacker had targeted TeleMessage, which is used by the Trump administration, and managed to obtain the contents of some users messages and group chats.404 Media made a transcript of what this video said and is now publishing it in order to preserve TeleMessages claims around the security and functioning of its Signal archiving product. The news comes after Senator Ron Wyden has demanded a Department of Justice investigation into the TeleMessage episode, including the national security risk the app poses. The letter demanding the investigation also points to TeleMessages marketing material which claims messages are protected with end-to-end encryption, a claim that both the hack and a subsequent technical analysis refute. The video said TeleMessages app keeps intact the Signal security and end-to-end encryption when communicating with other Signal users. This is not true, judging by the fact the hacker was able to obtain plaintext Signal messages. The video also says The only difference is the TeleMessage version captures all incoming and outgoing Signal messages for archiving purposes.404 Media originally embedded this video into our article first showing that then-U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz was using the TeleMessage tool. That embed now says This video is private. TeleMessages YouTube channel still includes videos about its Telegram, WeChat, and WhatsApp archiving tools.Do you know anything else about TeleMessage? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.In the demonstration video, the company shows copies of Signal messages in what appears to be an ordinary Gmail account. The video says the Gmail is for the demo and that TeleMessage works with other archiving platforms.Smarsh, the parent company of TeleMessage, did not respond to a request for comment. The company has not responded to any of 404 Medias requests for comment, except a LinkedIn message from TeleMessage CEO Guy Levit at the time of the hack who directed the request to a Smarsh press representative. The news also comes after Micah Lee, the journalist and security researcher who worked with 404 Media on breaking news of the hack, published a more indepth analysis of TeleMessages Signal clone which shows the company does not archive messages as securely as it has claimed in marketing material.NBC News reported on Monday that a second hacker targeted TeleMessage too. TeleMessage suspended service after the hacks. The transcript of the video follows below:Hello and welcome to TeleMessage's Signal Archiver introduction. In this video we will demonstrate how organizations can archive the Signal communication of their employees, thereby increasing productivity and satisfaction in today's innovative mobile environment, all the while remaining compliant with regulations.TeleMessage can capture and archive any Signal message and attachment, including images, videos and audio clips, as well as message deletions. Our Signal Archiver version supports iOS and Android phones on corporate or BYOD employee-owned devices, as well as the desktop version. In short, with TeleMessage, employees can keep using the standard Signal application while supporting full company archival and retrieval of all messages.Let's get started with our demo.In this demo we will use two phones, an Android smartphone on the right and an iPhone on the left. Both phones have the TeleMessage archiver installed, enabling full archival search and retrieval. TeleMessage's Signal Archiver is identical to the regular Signal application that you can download from Google Play or App Store. We keep intact the Signal security and end-to-end encryption when communicating with other Signal users. The only difference is the TeleMessage version captures all incoming and outgoing Signal messages for archiving purposes.Image: Screenshot of the TeleMessage video. We'll start by tapping the Signal Archiver icon on the two phones and, as you see, the standard Signal chat interface is displayed. We now share a series of messages, emojis and attachments which are received and responded to. We also create groups and again share messages and attachments. Now let's see how these chats appear in the archive.TeleMessage is integrated with numerous archiving platforms. For this demo we will display the messages in a simple Gmail web interface. The inherent robust capabilities in the TeleMessage Signal archive router fully captures message and employee metadata, making search and filter queries intuitive and friendly. In this demonstration, we have shown how TeleMessage's Signal Archiver looks, feels, and acts just like the original and offers a full range of archiving features and compliance with relevant judicial and regulatory requirements.Let us take care of your Signal archiving and recording requirements.
