SPORTS.YAHOO.COMStrasbourg and Newcastle target Pierre Mounguengue set to join Dynamo KyivStrasbourg and Newcastle target Pierre Mounguengue set to join Dynamo KyivParis Saint-Germain’s Pierre Mounguengue (18) is expected to sign for Dynamo Kyiv shortly, according to reports from Onze Mondial.Having previously been targeted by RC Strasbourg Alsace and Newcastle United, the forward has ultimately decided to prioritise the Ukrainian club’s project, won over by the determination of club chairman Ihor Surkis, who has offered him a three-year contract and guarantees of playing time in the first team. The prospect of competing in the Champions League should they qualify was also a factor.Author of a highly successful season (21 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions) with PSG’s Under-19s – and even making his debut under Luis Enrique against FC Lorient in early May – Mounguengue is now set to set off for new horizons, having visited Dynamo’s training facilities in recent days.Yet another loss for PSG, who, despite offering a contract, failed to provide the young striker with a clear and convincing vision for the future.GFFN | Léo Aschi0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMParo dethrones Crocker to land welterweight titleParo claimed a unanimous decision victory to become a two-weight champion [Getty Images]Australia's Liam Paro is the new IBF welterweight champion with a points win over Belfast's Lewis Crocker at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane, Australia.Paro, who previously held the IBF's light-welterweight title, becomes the first Australia-born boxer since Jeff Fenech to become a multi-weight world champion, earning a 115-113 nod on all three cards after a gruelling battle. The 30-year-old produced a display of skill and heart to dethrone Crocker who was making the first defence of the title he won in Belfast last September, improving his record to 28 wins with one defeat.Crocker, 29, appeared on the brink of a stoppage late in the fight but just couldn't find the finishing shot with Paro reeling, suffering a first career reverse in his 23rd contest and will now seek to rebuild.Paro won his first world title when passing the considerable challenge posed by the big-punching Subriel Matias in June 2024 before losing it in his next fight against Richardson Hitchens. After moving up to welterweight last year, his dream to become a two-weight champion has been realised, but was pushed to the brink by the Northern Irishman."This means everything," Paro told broadcaster Main Event"I climbed the mountain before [at light-welterweight] but it's been a long, hard road. I got knocked off and here I am again."I had to dig in. Lewis Crocker is a great champion and held himself like a true champion."I had so many people telling me I couldn't, what now? I want all the big fights now Down Under. I want it all. This life is about testing yourself so bring it on."There were no complaints from the outgoing champion who grew into the contest after a slow start and while so close to pulling it out of the fire late on, Paro managed to survive the onslaught"It was a great fight, respect to Liam," he said."It was a very close fight. I think a bit more could have been done about the holding but congratulations to Liam, he's a fantastic fighter."Paro makes a fast startParo's skills shone in the opening rounds [Getty Images]Crocker had new head coach Huzaifah Iqbal in his corner for the first time, but there were no major changes in approach although he did deviate from the back-foot tactic he employed in his title win over Paddy Donovan.Paro made his customary fast start, throwing out his southpaw jab, a bundle of energy and feints to set up his left, finding a home downstairs on several occasions as he settled in well. The defending champion's approach was reminiscent of his first fight with Donovan, standing in the pocket as he sought to make it a gruelling battle on the inside, and while he had his moments, Paro remained busy and was able to vary his attack, spinning to create the angles.Crocker's pace increased in the third, putting his punches together a little more as Paro was warned for a second time for use of the head, yet the Australian seemed happy to match fire with fire.Paro's work-rate was higher as he varied his attacks and a solid left snapped Crocker's head back in the fifth. The Belfast man did not appeared stung, but it was further evidence the speed and variety was giving Crocker problems, yet the Belfast man found two solid rights at the end of the round which Paro certainly felt. The momentum seemed to carry into the early part of the sixth with Crocker beginning to impose himself much more, finding a home for the overhand left towards the end of the round.Crocker mounts a charge in the second halfCrocker seemed close to a stoppage in the closing stages [Getty Images]It left this fight finely poised heading into the second half with Paro having a better seventh, but noticeably less eager to stand in front of Crocker who was beginning to walk the challenger down. The big left hook that Crocker had been seeking landed flush in the eighth and left some swelling over Paro's left eye that was badly damaged in his last outing against David Papot. The Australian's corner were calling for "feints" and "defence", perhaps aware the heavy hands of Crocker were beginning to cause problems and he landed some thudding hooks after Paro had made a quick start to the ninth.Paro's skills were telling in the 10th and perhaps the winning of the fight as he regained some control, but Crocker lifted it again in the 11th, landing with an uppercut on the inside that hurt the Australian who was on the back foot and clearly in trouble with the champion sensing he had made a major breakthrough.Crocker perhaps knew he had to go for it and continued to rock Paro who was seeking to tie up as another monster left spit his left eye.The Australian was hanging on desperately but survived to hear the final bell with his fast start ultimately paying off against Crocker's strong finish.Paro seeks the big names as Crocker must rebuildParo is now seeking the welterweight division's biggest names [Getty Images]Liam Paro insists his win on home soil should be the beginning of a wave of big Australian fight nights. Now a two-division champion, the 30-year-old has proven he is a force on the world stage once again and is now eyeing a unification against one of the division's other champions: Devin Haney [WBO], Ryan Garcia [WBC] or Rolando 'Rolly' Romero [WBA].Ireland's Paddy Donovan is now his mandatory challenger, but considering his title win was a mandatory defence for Crocker, Paro may have the luxury of a voluntary defence of unification before facing the Limerick man who pulled out of a final eliminator between the pair in January due to injury. As for Crocker, it's back to the drawing board, but perhaps his stock may have increased a little in defeat, losing by the narrowest of margins a long way from home. However, there is always the danger he slips into the 'who needs 'em club' as his power makes him a dangerous prospect, but may now need to gamble to get back on track.Perhaps a rematch with Conah Walker - whom he beat in a thrilling battle two years ago - may be a natural step as there were rumours of a voluntary defence against the Wolverhampton man before the IBF mandated he face Paro.At 29, he has plenty ahead of him, so his next move will be crucial.Boxing schedule and results 2026Watch every Born to Brawl episode More boxing from the BBC Notifications, social media and more with BBC Sport0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWales boss Bellamy in talks over Burnley jobCraig Bellamy was appointed Wales manager in 2024 [Getty Images]Wales manager Craig Bellamy is in advanced talks with Burnley over becoming their new head coach ahead of next season. The Clarets have approached the Football Association of Wales with a view to appointing Bellamy as Scott Parker's successor, with the 46-year-old now understood to be in contract talks with the Championship side. While a final agreement is yet to be reached, talks have accelerated in the last 48 hours with significant progress made.BBC Sport revealed on 30 April that Bellamy was a leading contender to replace Parker after his sacking.Initial indications were that Bellamy preferred to stay on with Wales to guide them through a home nations European Championships in 2028.But Bellamy is now giving serious consideration to leaving the FAW and is engaged in talks with Burnley. The former Manchester City, Liverpool and West Ham winger was appointed Wales boss in 2024.Wales failed to reach the 2026 World Cup, losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina during a penalty shoot-out defeat in Cardiff. Bellamy's contract had been due to see him through until 2028, including the European Championships being held across England, Scotland, Wales and Republic of Ireland. Any move to Burnley would see Bellamy return to Turf Moor for a second time, having previously worked under Vincent Kompany as assistant manager at the club before his move to Bayern Munich.Bellamy was briefly named acting head coach following the Belgian's move to the Bundesliga club , but he left shortly afterwards. Cooper and Edwards among Wales targetsSources have told BBC Sport that Burnley are willing to meet the compensation clause in Bellamy's contract with the FAW.But Bellamy's departure would come as a blow to the governing body, who had been hopeful of the 46-year-old remaining at the helm after he indicated a preference to stay."Everything's in place, I get completely backed and it's going to give me the opportunity in the next two years to improve again," Bellamy said before his side's 1-1 draw with Ghana in Cardiff on 2 June."Links? I understand it but I don't look too far. I love what I have here."I've been offered that elsewhere as well, but I have this here already."Wales gave me this opportunity and one or two might not have because I was conscious I haven't managed before. Wales have given me this opportunity and I'm really grateful for that."I am ambitious, trust me. I want to earn loads and loads of money but there's a time and now, at this present moment, it just doesn't feel that time."Former Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Swansea City boss Steve Cooper and ex-Wolves head coach Rob Edwards are among the contenders to succeed Bellamy should he depart. Cooper has been out of work since leaving Danish club Brondby earlier this year while Edwards was sacked by Wolves a few weeks after the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.Latest Burnley news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Burnley - what do you want to know?0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRemember when Trump began pushing several new “big lies” that will devastate the country? If one were to fact check all of Donald Trump’s misstatements, exaggerations, lies, and redefinitions of established traditions before, during, and between his two terms as President of the United States, one would not have enough time to sleep more than two or three hours in a 24-hour period. From his hyperbolic claim, through his first term Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, on January 21, 2017, that “That was the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period,” even after aerial views showed far fewer people upon the Washington Mall in attendance at Trump’s inaugural ceremony compared with those of Barack Obama. Related Trump doesn’t care about drug trafficking. All he cares about is distracting us. Then to what has come to be referred to as “Sharpiegate” arising from Trump’s attempt to cover up his misstatement in September 2019 that the approaching storm, Hurricane Dorian, would hit several Southern states while incorrectly including Alabama. Local weather bureaus had previously reassured Alabama residents that the hurricane would not affect their state. Rather than admit his mistake, Trump showed reporters a weather map, which he altered with a black Sharpie pen, by expanding the possible path of the hurricane to include Alabama. Most of us have read by now that the Washington Post had recorded 30,573 “untruths” during his first term, which averaged approximately 21 invalid claims a day. The most egregious claim, which had deadly consequences, was the “Big Lie” that he had been swindled out of beating Joe Biden for the presidency in November 2020, which resulted in an insurrection by his staunch supporters upon the Capitol of the United States. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Trump’s second term is no different for this Misstater-(Lier)-in-Chief. As the lies continue piling up, as he attempts to grab more power and his wealth through grifting soars, he again has attempted to redraw the maps and redefine the definition of “professional.” He issued an executive order on the day of his second inauguration (January 20) directing U.S. federal agencies to officially change what is called the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.” This body of water was given the name “Gulf of Mexico” in the 1550s, derived from Mexica, the Nahuatl term of the Aztecs. This name became internationally recognized. As part of Donald Trump’s attempts to dismantle the Department of Education and its funding to the states — in particular, for special education programs and student college loans. A key provision of Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Law” is reducing or eliminating loans to students who are not enrolled in degree programs classified as “professional.” This change has major implications for students as tuition costs continue to increase and family income has either remained static or has decreased. The Electronic Code of Federal Regulations states that a professional degree signifies the completion of academic requirements needed to begin practice in a profession. This requires skills beyond a bachelor’s degree – with some involving a master’s degree or a multi-year Doctoral degree — and generally involve professional licensure. Under the Trump administration, several former professional college and university degree programs have been downgraded to “non-professional.” Even though they generally require advanced training or degrees past a bachelor’s degree, and they also require licensure, by entering these academic programs, students’ risk significantly reducing their loan caps or forfeiting entirely their ability to obtain government loans or grants. A list of programs no longer defined as “professional” include, but are not limited to the following: Healthcare: Nursing, Physician Assistant, Public Health, Dental Hygiene, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology, Speech Pathology Architecture Accounting Education Social Work, Counseling Engineering Business Master’s Programs It is no mere coincidence that women comprise the majority of practitioners in many of these fields and especially in healthcare, education, and social services. What we truth-tellers and realism-seekers here on Earth 1 refer to as “Healthcare,” “Food and Shelter Assistance,” “Climate Control Regulations,” and “Education,” the Republicans over on Earth 2 in Congress, in the Oval Office, and on right-wing media define as “Waste,” “Fraud,” and “Abuse.” The so-called “One Big Beautiful Law” the Republicans recently passed in both houses of Congress (and signed by President Trump) not only redefines and limits student loan programs, it also cuts essential services like the SNAP program (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly called “Food Stamps” for people in need of food assistance. Approximately one in eight Americans receives nutrition assistance through SNAP, and most of them are children. Though the president and most congressional Republicans promised ad nauseam not to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid in the current budget — surprise of all surprises — the House Republicans cut $600 billion from Medicaid and from the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The bill makes significant reductions to Medicaid by imposing work requirements, mostly unreasonable and unrealistic, on many of those receiving benefits. While taking from the poorest and most needy, the bill provides a multi trillion-dollar tax breaks package with the majority going to the richest among us. The bill makes permanent the $4.5 trillion in enormous tax breaks for the rich, which was passed in Trump’s first regime. The “Big Lie” so far in Trump’s second term relates to his misrepresentation of how his priorities and policies are raising the economic fortunes of all U.S.-Americans. “You know, I just might add, this is also the golden age of America, because we are doing better than we’ve ever done as a country. Prices are coming down and all of that stuff,” Trump said during a speech at the McDonald’s Impact Summit in Washington, DC on November 17. I wonder how many misstatements and lies the Washington Post will accumulate during Trump’s second regime. APNEWS.COMCamp Mystic in Texas files for bankruptcy after catastrophic floods killed 28 peopleA broken heart sign is displayed near Camp Mystic on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, after a flash flood swept through the area in Hunt, Texas. (AP Photo/Eli Hartman, file)2026-06-24T12:56:28Z Camp Mystic filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization on Wednesday, nearly a year after catastrophic floods killed 25 girls and two teenage counselors at the all-girls Christian camp in Texas. In paperwork filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of Texas in Houston, the camp listed its debt as exceeding $10 million. The camp along the Guadalupe River said it had assets in the range of 100,001 to $500,000.Families of the victims filed a lawsuit in November saying the camp operators failed to take the necessary steps to protect the girls as life-threatening floodwaters approached on July 4. Camp owner Richard Eastland also died in the flood. All told, the destructive flooding killed at least 136 people along a several-mile stretch of the river, raising questions about how things went so terribly wrong. The bankruptcy filing comes weeks after Camp Mystic halted plans to reopen this summer in the face of outrage from victims’ families and lawmakers that the century-old camp intended to welcome girls back while lawsuits and investigations remained ongoing.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAvalanche 2026 Draft PlanLAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 29: Louka Cloutier meets team personnel after being selected 132nd overall by the Colorado Avalanche during the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft Rounds 2-7 at Sphere on June 29, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Vinnick/NHLI via Getty Images) | NHLI via Getty Images Again, and for the foreseeable future, the NHL Entry Draft is of a different relevance to the Colorado Avalanche as they don’t have a first round pick until at least 2029. Even their lone remaining second round selection for the foreseeable future (in 2027) likely won’t make it through the next trade deadline so picking later in the draft is the new normal for Colorado. Still, this draft offers more intrigue than usual because the Avalanche hold nine draft picks, though Colorado won’t be on the clock until day two. That might not sound exciting or important but if the Carolina Hurricanes can get a Jackson Blake at 109th overall then it’s no excuse to write-off the goal of getting an impact player outside the top 100 picks.Colorado’s 2026 draft class splits evenly into two different tiers. First, the newly acquired third round pick from the Ross Colton trade plus a duo of fourth and fifth round picks make for a nice mid-round cluster and then there’s four remaining Hail Mary lotto tickets in the seventh round. Both sections of the draft require a bit of a different strategy but it is still possible to get NHL contributions in each portion of the draft as shown below. Candidates at 74th OverallHuzzah! Joe Sakic procured a relevant draft asset in the aforementioned recent Ross Colton trade. This was Nashville’s own third round pick and holds some decent value especially as it sits in the top third of the round. There’s a lot of thought that this pick should just get traded because the Avalanche have made horrendous picks in the third round (and later) as shown below but that shouldn’t be an excuse to stop trying. A good pick needs to be coupled with a development plan and organizational commitment but it can be done to try and reverse previous failures. Let’s be honest, whoever gets selected at 74th overall is in all probability instantly a top five prospect in this organization.Perhaps it’s time to go back to the Rouyn-Noranda well to look for options in the third round with this rare opportunity for Colorado to pick early on the second day of the draft. Enter Lars Steiner who is a 5-foot-10 right winger import to the QMJHL from Switzerland. He can shoot the puck as evidenced by his 30 goals in 44 games this season and produced 55 points overall. Steiner played on the Swiss team at the World Junior Championship and contributed four points in five games. As a late birthday he will turn 18 this fall and should have many options available to him on where to play next season. Steiner is ranked 89th on NHL Central Scouting’s North American list but many other rankings have him in the third round. He’s the type of talent the Avalanche might be intrigued by as they value goal scoring in their prospects highly.Candidates at 126th, 128th, 149th, and 152nd OverallWith this much mid-round draft capital it is possible the Avalanche package some of these picks to move around the draft board. This isn’t something the organization has done much of in the past, in fact the only draft selection in the Joe Sakic era they have moved up for was when they ascended ten spots to 139th to select Ryder Rolston in 2020. Of course the idea is contingent on not trading these picks away in other deals for immediate needs on the Avalanche roster. It is difficult to identify any particular targets 100 picks deep into the draft but there will always be some fallers who were expected to go a round or two higher. Those types of players should be the target here in hopes to rebuild the prospect system. Forecasting particulars, though, Colorado loves their specific targets of overagers, NCAA players and Russians. Potentially a combination of two or three of those attributes would be perfect if they can find it.One player actually does fit all three criteria and that is Egor Barabanov, ranked number one on The Althetic’s top overager list as the left shot center was fourth in the OHL in scoring for Saginaw with and has recently committed to UMass. We know the Avalanche have a lot of familiarity with that program and have a prospect in defenseman Francesco Dell’Elce heading into his junior year at the school. Listed at 43rd on NHL Central Scouting’s rankings for North American skaters Barabanov might fall out of reach for Colorado but the value of overagers is tough to peg. Still, no doubt the young Russian is on their radar.🆕 at @TheAthletic: Ranking the top 20 overagers in the #2026NHLDraft. 🎁 Free to read, with full reports: https://t.co/9TXucxxpLTpic.twitter.com/jgXPuP9Of8— Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) May 27, 2026Candidates at 195th, 214th, 215th, and 222nd Overall There has been an interesting draft factoid for the Avalanche is that almost all seventh rounds picks they have taken in their history drafted out of the CHL have been signed to a NHL Entry Level Contract (the lone exception being goalie Ivan Zhigalov drafted in 2022). The CHL produces a deep talent pool will always have some options late in the draft, Nikita Prishchepov’s selection at 217th overall in 2024 as the latest example. While the impetus is to use very late draft selections on long-term projects from either Russia or the NCAA, it’s interesting to note that the CHL seventh round picks have made it a worthy investment.Speaking of Russian goaltenders, Yegor Rybkin has Avalanche prospect written all over him. He is the second ranked international goalie, stands at 6-foot-7 and was injured for most of the year, which might make him drop in the rankings. He plays in Russia’s MHL for the Nizhny Novgorod system so his NHL rights will be held indefinitely by the team that drafts him. The organization loves large goaltenders and long-term projects. With four seventh round pick at their disposal some selections will fit that criteria. Croskery. Zurawski. Hrenak. McLaughlin. Olsson. Ruzicka. Sparks. Sivertson. 30 intriguing #2026NHLDraft prospects who just missed the cut for my upcoming final draft board. 🎁 Free to read: https://t.co/MGdcZYzCkgpic.twitter.com/HBtf9GcY7x— Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) May 28, 2026What type of targets would you like to see the Avalanche pick on draft day?Let us know in the comments!0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTottenham makes “significant progress” in Mateus Fernandes dealLONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 24: West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes at the end of the match during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Leeds United at London Stadium on May 24, 2026 in London, England. (Photo by Rob Newell - CameraSport via Getty Images) | CameraSport via Getty Images Mateus Fernandes is one of the two main midfield targets for Tottenham Hotspur this summer along with Sandro Tonali. Both deals are “in process” but a new report in the Telegraph yesterday suggested that things are coming along nicely for Fernandes, with Spurs having “positive talks” with West Ham on a deal that could cost as much as £85m.Miguel Delaney, chief football writer for the Telegraph, says that Spurs are moving quickly to lock down a deal for Fernandes, knowing that Manchester United is interested and was at least at one point the player’s first choice for a destination. Delaney writes that Spurs’ transfer fee package is bigger than that currently offered by United, and Spurs are also offering bigger wages, which could tip the balance. He also writes that Fernandes is open to the possibility of moving to Spurs this summer, Between him and Tonali, Fernandes is the player whom I think makes more sense for Tottenham’s midfield going into next season. He’s younger, moderately passy, and a good deep lying playmaker. He’s no Adam Wharton, but there hasn’t been a lot of movement on that front, suggesting Wharton might be a backup option if deals for Fernandes or Tonali fall through. Frankly, I’d be fine with Tonali falling through considering he’d likely cost between £85m-100m to buy from Newcastle and is very similar in profile to the multiple midfielders we already have. In short — we have Lucas Bergvall at home!Fernandes, however, I’d be okay with. Let’s hope this gets done sooner rather than later.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDocherty has 'good feeling' Scots will avoid 'glorious failure'[Getty Images]Tony Docherty has "a good feeling" that Scotland will at last put to bed their reputation for "glorious failure" when they face Brazil in World Cup Group C on Wednesday. The Scots will almost certainly qualify for the knock-out stages of a major tournament for the first time if Steve Clarke's side avoid defeat in Miami."I've actually got a good feeling," former Dundee and Ross County manager Docherty told the BBC Scottish Football Podcast. "I'm positive about it."Docherty expected the win over Haiti but pointed out that Morocco and Brazil were always going to be tough as they are the seventh and sixth ranked sides in the world. "But what I've got an opportunity now," he said. "People might view this as a threat or as an opportunity. I see it as an opportunity."They'll approach this game like any game, with the same attacking principles, same defensive principles, hoping that the footballing gods look down on us a wee bit. "I don't think they did against Morocco. I think decisions went against us, I think the referee was poor."We're still in a position that we can qualify for the next 32 and make history."Docherty pointed out that playing in the heat of Miami will be "like playing in the oven" where "you're gasping for breath". However, he added: "Everybody has that feeling of you know, Scotland historically, we've had that glorious failure. "I feel this group of players are different and I've felt it for a while. They show real resilience and a real strong mentality and that's going to be required tonight."Playing in a World Cup against Brazil for qualification, it doesn't get any better than that. I can see us coming away with a one each."0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMA dazzling show of Pride in a ruby-red state keeps hope alive for this loyal residentRetired electrician Richard Hunt, a St. Louis native, had always said, “I would not live my life out in St. Louis. And 68 years later, I am still here!” Hunt is one of the biggest boosters of the blue oasis in ruby-red Missouri. Related This gay dad felt incredible love & acceptance on his 65th birthday with his entire family Hunt cites St. Louis’ vibrant arts community (he saw Bernadette Peters with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra just a few nights ago), status as a sports town (“crown jewel”: the St. Louis Cardinals), and civic institutions like The St. Louis Art Museum and the St. Louis Zoo — both still free to the public — among a long list of attractions that have kept him in the Gateway to the West. And “don’t get me started on food,” he adds. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “Whatever you are looking for, you can find that cuisine in St. Louis, as well as many you may never have heard of. Everyone knows of the historical food items introduced in St. Louis: ice cream cones, cotton candy, and iced tea were supposedly introduced first at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. However, Toasted Ravioli, Gooey Butter Cake, and barbequed pork steaks are things many people have never heard of.” And the provel cheese on St. Louis-style pizza is “manna from heaven!” But Hunt has grown to appreciate something else over the last few years in St. Louis: the city’s unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, especially as much of Missouri has fallen under MAGA’s spell — including its enmity for queer people. “Missouri is very much Trump country,” Hunt says. “When you drive outside the metropolitan areas, you see farmland with Trump signs everywhere. Barns with Trump signs painted on their entire sides. Trump billboards.” “For some reason, rural residents still think Republicans are looking after their best interests.” Those voters could heed the advice of Mark Twain, perhaps Missouri’s most famous native son, when he said, “Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason.” In St. Louis, however, the MAGA message seems to have fallen on deaf ears over the last decade, in particular when it comes to the animus shown toward trans and gay people. Residents and officials alike have been unequivocal in their support for the LGBTQ+ community, Hunt says. Start with just the sheer multitude of Pride celebrations around the St. Louis area, Hunt explains, with a list: “In the Soulard neighborhood of South St. Louis; St. Charles Pride just west of St. Louis; Metro-East Pride in Belleville, Illinois; Alton, Illinois Pride; Tower Grove Pride in Tower Grove Park; and, of course, there is also St. Louis Black Pride.” Tower Grove’s celebration “rivals the official St. Louis Pride Festival happening at the end of this month,” Hunt points out. One annual ritual in particular, though, remains Hunt’s favorite display of LGBTQ+ affirmation. It happens in St. Louis’ dazzling Citygarden. The downtown urban sculpture park fills two city blocks with gardens and fountains, including a (pristine) reflecting pool, multiple waterfalls, and three signature fountains, among them a splash pad with over a hundred jets lit every June in the colors of the rainbow. It dazzles Hunt with every visit. “This is just a spectacular show of how St. Louis celebrates Pride,” he says. “Citygarden is right in the center of downtown St. Louis, near City Hall, Busch Stadium, and other notable St. Louis attractions and buildings. The Gateway Arch National Park is about a half mile to the east. To the west is the St. Louis Civil Courts building, with its columned upper floors, also lit in a full rainbow.” Hunt described the public show of Pride as “special, knowing that in deep-red Missouri, St. Louis still cares about the LGBTQ+ community.” That care might be food for thought for voters in the rest of the Show-Me State, enjoying St. Louis staples like cotton candy and Gooey Butter Cake at county fairs everywhere. Missouri’s keenest political observer comes to mind again. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority,” Mark Twain said, “it is time to pause and reflect.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima -
WWW.404MEDIA.COSnap's AI Specs: LOLI am staring at a painted portrait of King Charles, who is wearing a red suit. The comically oversized and heavy Snap Specs I am wearing have basically created a digital version of the real painting and overlaid it over the real thing. A narrator speaking through the glasses asks me to reach out and touch a butterfly perched on his right shoulder. Through the glasses, I see a digital version of my hand reach out. The butterfly takes off and floats toward my ghostly hand. It lands on my fake fingers, and clips through them. Imagine yourself as royalty, a narrator in the Snap Specs says to me. King Charles’ face morphs into a version of my own, though it’s been run through an AI filter to look thinner, smoother, yet somehow older. I walk to the next painting and stand on the black dot I’ve been told to stand on. The painting looks like a blank-ish canvas. I am positive I am about to see the same magic trick I’ve seen several times in the last few minutes; my face is going to be “painted” on the canvas the way it has been on several other portraits. The narrator starts talking to me. His voice is much fainter. He starts talking, and I look slightly away from the painting. The experience stops. I get a staffer to help me reset the glasses. I look back at the painting. The narrator begins talking. I slightly turn my head. The experience stops. I look at the painting again. It starts over. I remember that a staffer had told me not to look away from the paintings or the experience would stop. I do not move my head this time. Another AI version of my face appears on the canvas. I walk away, and do not feel as though I have just tried transcendent futuristic technology.Snap let people try the glasses at “Spectacular, The Art of Jonathan Yeo in Augmented Reality,” a museum takeover at the Cannes Lions advertising festival in France, where nearly every big tech brand was pitching its platform’s advertising capabilities, and where I am working on a few stories for 404 Media. I don’t write about gadgets all that often, but with the Snap Specs getting lots of mostly negative attention and with investors actively begging CEO Evan Spiegel to not make them, I figured that, given the opportunity, I would put them on my face. Snap’s experience was tightly curated (the glasses don’t come out for four months), and was basically an audio/video tour of a few paintings of celebrities. The flagship augmented reality experience for Snap’s new, widely clowned-upon glasses is essentially the same thing that brands have been doing at museums for 15 years now. Rather than use your phone to make art pop off the wall, it uses the $2,195 glasses that weigh “just 132 grams,” a Snap press release says (most regular glasses weigh between 25-50 grams) to make paintings of celebrities blink at you. At the beginning of the experience, my face was scanned on an iPad and then was presumably run through various AI filters to let me replace celebrity faces with my own. A portrait of Jony Ive in which he is holding an iPhone put my face on that iPhone, for example. A portrait of David Attenborough allowed me to “look into the past” and “look into the future” by running my face through different age filters; the result was an AI-ified version of me with a tiny head and a goatee as a child, wearing an enormous hat, and an older version of myself that I could flick back and forth to with my hand. This was the type of brand experience I’ve done a million times at different conferences and it was so surface level as to be barely notable, but the glasses are indeed very heavy. They didn’t hurt to wear on my big head for 10 minutes, but I couldn’t imagine wearing them much longer than that. The visuals didn’t make me dizzy or nauseous like some virtual reality glasses have, but the visuals and audio also weren’t that great, and the glasses are augmented reality rather than fully engrossed virtual reality. There were clipping issues and, again, the experience stopped if I even slightly turned my head away from a painting—it is hard to imagine these things working well in real life. I have tried other VR and AR demos. So many are like this. They all have problems even in highly controlled environments and barely do anything more than your phone can do, with the added bonus of being incredibly expensive, uncomfortable, and branding you as an asshole. It was hard to imagine trying these and not dunking on them and, indeed, what I thought would happen did come to pass. This is to say nothing of the privacy concerns associated with shoving AI into a camera and pair of comically large display glasses. We have written repeatedly about these dangers and they are not worth delving back into in a Snap-specific context, because these glasses are so big, heavy, dorky, and expensive that it is impossible to fantasize a world in which anyone wears them.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima -

Under the terms of the deal, the Gunners are entitled to 17.5% of any future transfer fee if Monaco sell Balogun before his contract runs out.Monaco are reportedly open to offers and could demand around £43m. Should a club meet that valuation, Arsenal would receive roughly £7.56m without having to lift a finger.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMichigan coach calls Savion Hiter a special talentWhen it comes to freshman hype, Michigan football running back Savion Hiter isn't spoken of as a first-year player -- he's spoken of as a player who's been around for a lot longer and already has a track record. That's because he's already built as someone who has been going through strength and conditioning much longer than he has, and has the innate traits that many do not.Hiter is expected to see the field early and often, already discussed by offensive coordinator Jason Beck as being worthwhile to not just split time with Jordan Marshall, but perhaps be on the field at the same time.Assistant running backs coach Fred Jackson has been in Ann Arbor for quite some time, as this will be his 28th season with the program. And, with that, he's seen quite a few talented tailbacks, whether recruited or inherited, from Tyrone Wheatley, Tim Biakabatuka, Chris Perry, Mike Hart, or Blake Corum. And as he sees it, Hiter stands above them all. Jackson spoke to Jon Jansen on the In the Trenches podcast, and shared a little more insight on what Hiter brings to the table."Talent-wise, and I told him this yesterday, I brought in a lot of good football players over the years, but as a freshman, he's probably the most talented guy I've seen that I brought in here as a true freshman," Jackson said. "He's already beyond what I think a freshman is capable of doing, and the guys that I have history of bringing in. He is such a tremendous competitor, a worker, a tremendous talent, can run, can catch, can block. I mean he's got it all at a young age. I've had to develop guys to get him there, maybe in his sophomore year. He's there now and that's very unique to me. And I wanted him to know that because he really knows a lot of the guys who played before him here and he understands where they ended up someone's first round, some the second. However, you look at NFL drafts and for me to say that to him, I was just saying it to let him know, 'Son your expectation level gonna be very high here and you've got some shoes of the try to fill that has gone before you (that) have been highly, highly successful. But here's -- hey, here's the things you got to do to get better even now.' "So but as a talent, he's special -- as a talent very special."But just because there are high expectations for Hiter doesn't mean that Jackson wants him to rest on his laurels. In fact, he's always working to ensure that he's improving daily, and with that comes honing different traits or working on different elements of his game."You've gotta daily have a plan for what you expect him to do," Jackson said. "The things that he may think he's good at, you always got to find something. And sometimes it's hard. You got to find something to say, man. 'You're not doing this. You can do this better. If you do this, you will be better at that,' kind of deal. You got to always, every day, find something because you can't let his mind wander and think, 'Hey, man, I've arrived. I would never as a football coach, let a kid think he's arrived as a back -- even the guys in the senior year. I'm still trying to find things daily to make them better, and I think that's what you do with a guy like him."Michigan is currently in summer conditioning and will start fall camp on August 1 with eyes on the season opener on September 5. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat is a fair contract extension for Jets DT Harrison Phillips? The New York Jets have shown a willingness to sign in-house talents to contract extensions this offseason. Running back Breece Hall got his extension after being franchise tagged, and more recently it was offensive lineman Joe Tippmann who signed a lucrative long-term deal. It has since been speculated that defensive tackle Harrison Phillips could be next. The Jets acquired Phillips in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason for 2026 and 2027 sixth-round picks. Phillips was immediately productive for Aaron Glenn's defense, registering a career-high five tackles for loss and 60 total tackles (second-most in his career). Now, it's clear the Jets should keep him around. The Jets inherited an extension Phillips previously signed with the Vikings, a two-year deal worth $15 million. Phillips earns an average annual salary of $7 million, and the upcoming 2026 season is a contract year. Now would be the time to negotiate an extension with the run-stuffing defensive tackle.Phillips is 30, so the Jets would want to discuss a reasonable extension. A two-year deal in the neighborhood of $19 million sounds plausible. Phillips would earn a career-high $9.5 million per season while staying under contract through 2028. His 2025 performance deserves a pay-raise.The Jets made a concentrated effort to get beefier across the defensive line this offseason. Phillips still fits Glenn's new identity. Holding discussions with Phillips over a reasonable extension would benefit all parties involved. This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: What is a fair contract extension for Jets DT Harrison Phillips?0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Draft: Thunder nearly finish Paul George trade, and it completely reshaped the franchiseThe Oklahoma City Thunder were pushed into an unfortunate situation in 2019. Despite finishing in the top-3 of MVP voting and leading the team to a playoff appearance, Paul George wasn’t happy.George, reportedly due to his relationship with then-Thunder star Russell Westbrook, demanded a trade. Once Kawhi Leonard signed a free-agent deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, all the pieces started to fall into place. Leonard pushed the Clippers to add another star and George made it known he wanted out of Oklahoma City. That July, the deal was completed. George was leaving the Thunder to help Leonard and the Clippers try and win an NBA championship. In exchange for George, the Thunder received four unprotected first-round picks, one protected first-rounder and two pick swaps. The team also received two players from the Clippers. It was quite the haul, one capable of completely reshaping the Thunder … but only if the team made the right moves. Following the Thunder’s selection of Aday Mara in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft on Tuesday, the George trade has nearly come to a close. It’s safe to say the deal worked out extremely well for the Thunder. That’s because one of the two players acquired for George was — at the time — a promising, young rookie named Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Here’s what the deal looked like when it was made back in 2019:Thunder’s Paul George trade, revisited The Clippers receive:• Paul GeorgeThe Thunder receive: • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander• Danilo Gallinari• Clippers 2022 first-round pick• Clippers 2024 first-round pick• Clippers 2026 first-round pick• Heat 2021 first-round pick• Heat 2023 first-round pick (lottery protected)• Clippers 2023 first-round pick (right to swap picks)• Clippers 2025 first-round pick (right to swap picks)So, how did those players and picks work out for the Thunder … let’s take a look.Right off the bat, the Thunder very easily won the deal. Getting Gilgeous-Alexander, who has since blossomed into a two-time MVP and a top-3 player in the NBA, was a masterstroke. Gilgeous-Alexander has been the best player on the best team in the NBA and still has a few years left in his prime before he presumably loses a step. Most trade analysis would end there. Getting a future franchise icon and potential Hall of Famer out of the deal makes it a clear win for the Thunder … but the rest of the deal is worth breaking down.Gallinari put up one solid year of production with the Thunder before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks for a conditional 2025 second-round pick.In the 2021 NBA Draft, the Thunder used the Heat’s pick on Tre Mann, who was later dealt to the Hornets for Gordon Hayward, who averaged 5.3 points in 26 games with the Thunder before retiring. In the 2022 NBA Draft, the Thunder used their own first-round pick to take Chet Holmgren at No. 2 overall. Ten picks later, the team used the pick it acquired from the Clippers to select Jalen Williams. After nearly winning the Rookie of the Year award in his first season, Williams has developed into an All-Star player and a tremendous second banana behind Gilgeous-Alexander. The Thunder did not swap the Clippers’ 2023 first-round pick, rendering that irrelevant to the George trade. The Heat’s 2023 first-round pick was later amended, and pushed to a future year. The Clippers’ 2024 first-round pick was shipped out of Oklahoma City in the Chris Paul for Westbrook deal. Various swaps and amended picks resulted in the Thunder taking Thomas Sorber in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Sorber has not played in the NBA yet due to an ACL injury. The team also used the pick it acquired in the Gallinari deal to select Brooks Barnhizer in the second round. Barnhizer didn’t see much playing time as a rookie, averaging 1.7 points per game. Additionally, the Thunder traded the Clippers’ 2025 first-round pick to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for a protected 2027 first-round pick from the San Antonio Spurs. Finally, the Thunder used the Clippers’ 2026 first-round pick on Mara. Thunder get SGA and Jalen Williams from Paul George tradeThat’s a lot to digest. But if you really wanted to break it down by who’s left on the Thunder, you get the following return for George:• Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (in the original trade)• Jalen Williams (drafted by Thunder in 2022)• Thomas Sorber (drafted by Thunder in 2025)• Brooks Barnhizer (drafted by Thunder in 2025)• Aday Mara (drafted by Thunder in 2026)• A 2027 Spurs first-round pick (which is protected)There were a lot of other moving parts in the deal, obviously, but those are the players still rostered by the Thunder. And depending on what happens with that 2027 Spurs pick, there’s even more to come. The jury is still out on many of the players acquired by the Thunder in the deal. Sorber, Barnhizer and Mara haven’t proven themselves in the NBA just yet. It’s possible they turn into useful pieces moving forward. It’s also possible they don’t become anything.Even in the latter scenario, it’s tough to argue against the George trade. The Thunder got Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams out of the deal. That’s a franchise-altering haul. The Clippers, meanwhile, enjoyed five strong seasons from George, but no championships. In the process, the team mortgaged away its future picks and watched as George left for the Philadelphia 76ers ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season.Worst of all, the Clippers traded away Gilgeous-Alexander. Regardless of how well George performed in his five seasons in Los Angeles, that’s a decision that will continue to haunt the franchise for many, many years to come.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCincinnati Reds: Elly De La Cruz's return provides a boost in several areasJun. 24—With Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz back on the active roster, a lot of pieces fall back into place for the team.A defining aspect of the Reds' offense so far this summer is that while the lineup has been producing homers, the middle of the order hasn't been stringing base hits together to create big rallies. The Reds' offense had been overly reliant on the long ball, and speed wasn't as much of a strength of the middle of the order without the two-time All-Star.De La Cruz's combination of ability to hit for average, power and speed makes him a focal point of the lineup."Having him back is nice," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "You don't know if a guy is going to get hot. If we keep him healthy and let him do his thing, it'll be really welcome."When De La Cruz was out, opposing managers were game planning to stop surging Reds' outfielder JJ Bleday. Teams would structure their bullpens to give Bleday the toughest left-handed matchups, which is a process that creates challenges for any hitter whose name is being circled by the opposing team.Leadoff hitter Blake Dunn also had to carry more responsibility in the lineup without De La Cruz. Dunn has done a nice job, but he has had some inconsistent stretches.De La Cruz's return should change the way that teams attack other hitters, including Dunn and Bleday."The strides he has made, to see him carry that into the season and the consistency he has shown have been great," Reds hitting coach Chris Valaika said about De La Cruz. "Hitting from the right side has been the biggest highlight. His overall game has been consistently improving."As much as anything, De La Cruz's return should help the Reds' defense. This year, De La Cruz has been playing the best defense of his career. His arm, range and improved consistency have been a big part of his next step. On top of that, his return should allow some other moving pieces to slide back into place.Matt McLain had been playing more shortstop during De La Cruz's absence. With the All-Star shortstop back, McLain has a chance to showcase why he's one of the best defensive second basemen in MLB.What is the Reds' plan at second base, where McLain, Edwin Arroyo and Spencer Steer are all options right now?"I don't know," Francona said. "That's just being truthful. We talked extensively for a while knowing Elly was coming back. Arroyo can move around, as we've seen. Just because we did this today doesn't mean we need to stay like this. We'll see how this works out."It was alarming how often the Reds struggled turning double plays in De La Cruz's absence. De La Cruz and McLain both have terrific arms, and the return of that duo when they're starting to next to each other in the middle infield should help the Reds convert a lot more outs. Also, De La Cruz's return will allow Spencer Steer to play his best positions more often. It will be easier for the Reds to get Steer off of second base and right field and play him more at first base and left field with De La Cruz in the mix.De La Cruz went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Tuesday's 2-0 loss to the Brewers.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBoston Celtics select Chris Cenac Jr. with No. 27 pick in 2026 NBA DraftThere were trade rumors aplenty on Tuesday, June 23, for the Boston Celtics, yet they held firm and kept the No. 27 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, using it to select power forward Chris Cenac Jr. out of Houston University. The first-round pick is just 19 years old and stands tall at 6-foot-11. The former five-star recruit committed to play for the Houston Cougars in 2024 and averaged 9.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in his freshman season spanning from 2025 to 2026. Despite his youth, he started nearly every game for the Cougars and declared for the draft in early April. He joins a long list of Celtics big men hailing from Louisiana, featuring the legendary Bill Russell, the great Robert Parish, and fan-favorite center Robert Williams III.Cenac Jr. made a name for himself with his rebounding, as he was a double-double machine for the Coogs and used his length and athleticism to corral boards on both ends of the floor. He's not the most efficient scorer, shooting under 49 percent from the floor and averaging a little less than one 3-point make per outing. His defensive statistics aren't remarkable either, but he has the strength and versatility to help the Celtics as a power forward or a stretch five. And if there's one thing Boston lacked during the 2026 NBA Playoffs, it was size. Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid punished the C's when it mattered most and that ended up costing Boston the first round. How Cenac Jr. fits in with his fellow Celtics bigs — including Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and Amari Williams — remains to be seen. Perhaps he'll spend some time in Portland, Maine with the G League Celtics.Regardless, Boston still has more draft work to do. It owns the No. 40 pick in the second round, which was set for Wednesday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This article originally appeared on Celtics Wire: Celtics go big by drafting Chris Cenac Jr. with No. 27 pick0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup: ‘Why not us?’ — Inside Mauricio Pochettino’s U.S. soccer revolutionDANA POINT, Calif. — Mauricio Pochettino is sitting in his makeshift office at the U.S. World Cup team’s hotel, the French doors opened to a patio overlooking the sun stubbornly dipping over the Pacific.Four lemons sit in a bowl, a practice the 54-year-old Argentine believes absorbs negative energy. An unused surfboard leans in the corner, decorated in ocean-themed designs by the hotel’s executive sous chef, who is also an artist.Down the bluff and in the blue water, surfers are catching the day’s last waves before darkness descends. Even the seagulls seem happy. This isn’t heaven, but it’s just around the corner from it.Pochettino’s 20-month coaching project is also in a state of bliss. His U.S. squad began the World Cup with two impressive victories and clinched first place in Group D with one match to spare. The Americans will play winless Turkiye on Thursday at SoFi Stadium before facing a third-place team in the round of 32 on July 1 in Santa Clara, California. While getting to the quarterfinals for the first time in 24 years would be celebrated, Pochettino has gotten his team to believe in more.Behind his desk, the team motto is plastered on the wall: Why Not U.S.In marker, Pochettino has written quotes and aspirational messages on the wall cover.“Every single quote represents our journey from day one to today,” he told a small gathering of reporters Tuesday evening. They include:“The talent has brought us here, but it is heart, effort and unity that will make us unforgettable.”“Heart turns effort into belief and when everything hurts, heart keeps us fighting together.”“Now is our time!” with the date, time and score of the three-goal victory over Paraguay in the June 12 opener.“Believe, work, compete” is strung together in a circle.“Without one,” Pochettino says, shaking his head, “disaster.”There are more.“Thank you for being more than a team – for being a family.”On a whiteboard, in both English and Spanish, a message reads: “Don’t fear the void; it’s where the soul learns to fly.”A cynic would dismiss them as corny and contrived, but to Pochettino, these quotes epitomize the mindset and attitude that his soaring squad has embraced leading to, and at, the World Cup.Mauricio Pochettino of the United States waves to fans after the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D match between the USA and Australia on June 19, 2026 at Seattle Stadium in Seattle, Washington.Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesDefying the public’s — if not the team’s — expectations, the Americans have performed with a pirate’s swashbuckling and an artist’s grace. They are playing — gasp! — quality soccer.Thoughts of a deep run in the tournament are no longer fantasy. Few if anyone is calling them a trophy contender, but after decades mostly in the wilderness, the U.S. is finding its way.It was not a smooth process. When he was hired, at a program-record $6 million salary, “we misjudged,” he said. “The situation was worse than we really believed. We were so excited, because we were telling the players from day one, ‘Oh, it's a World Cup! We start to play in one year and a half!’”While the staff was prepared for the World Cup, the program was not.“We receive a big punch. … We say, ‘What the f–k?’ Because we were so excited,” he said. The slow process of creating a fresh culture, identifying the right players and formulating a strategy took time.“When you put the first seed in the soil, you don't see nothing,” he said, “and then you start to grow the tree.”Before the situation could improve, it needed to hit bottom. That occurred in March 2025 at the CONCACAF Nations League’s final four outside Los Angeles, where the U.S. finished fourth out of the four qualified teams.Cameron Carter-Vickers from United States reacts after losing to Canada in the third-place game in the the CONCACAF Nations League at SoFi Stadium.Luiza Moraes/USSF via Getty Images“We expected it,” Pochettino said. “It was more of a plan. It was painful but it was necessary. … It was a good crash.”He then stripped the team down and started building it back up, beginning with a young squad at the CONCACAF Gold Cup that summer. From there, things began to take hold. The U.S. went unbeaten in the last five matches of 2025, all against World Cup-bound teams.“We challenge people, we challenge the organization, we challenge players, we challenge everyone,” he said. “That was the process. Now, it's not a coincidence of what is going on” at the World Cup.Winger Tim Weah said Pochettino introduced “South American grit.”“When you look at teams like Argentina and Paraguay, when you look at Brazil, the Colombias, they always have that edge because of their mentality, and they're just nonstop,” Weah said. “It's something I don't think we had before.”Having changed the team’s mentality, Pochettino began working on the group’s belief in itself and what was possible. In November, referencing South Korea in 2002 and Morocco in 2022 making the World Cup semifinals against all odds, Pochettino asked the players, “Why not us?”“It unified everyone,” Pochettino said Tuesday.Four months later, following back-to-back smackdowns by Belgium and Portugal, the U.S. looked anything like a team prepared for World Cup success. Pochettino, though, wasn’t troubled by the results. “We start to see the progress,” he said. The sparkling performance in the World Cup opener came at the same venue (SoFi Stadium) as the dreary Nations League effort in March 2025. The undercard to the Mexico-Canada semifinal, the U.S. match against Panama (which the Americans lost 1-0) was witnessed by just a few thousand. It was a similarly dreary turnout for the third-place game against Canada (a 2-1 loss).“I didn’t recognize [the stadium for the World Cup opener] because it was empty” the last time he was there, Pochettino said.Huge crowds supporting visiting teams was an eye-opener for Pochettino, a former Argentine World Cup defender accustomed to full support when the national team played at home.A pro-Mexican crowd for the 2025 Gold Cup final against the U.S. in Houston left him “crying in the dressing room because I feel so sad,” he said. “We play in our own country and 70,000 Mexican [fans] are singing.”He was heartened by the enthusiasm of U.S. fans at the final World Cup tuneups against Senegal in Charlotte and Germany in Chicago, followed by the raucous support for the Group D matches in greater Los Angeles and Seattle.“Different vibe, different energy, so engaged with us,” he said. “That was amazing.”Although Pochettino does not live in the U.S. — he has homes in London and Barcelona — he has acquired a greater appreciation for the nation. Last fall, he attended the Ohio State-Texas football game and, after witnessing the deep passion of the fan bases, he wondered, “Why not with us, with soccer?”He loves country music, in particular Lainey Wilson, whom he discovered by watching the TV series “Yellowstone.” He saw Teddy Swims in concert in New York last winter. He enjoys John Denver’s “Country Roads” — the team’s victory song that has players and fans alike singing in unison.“Difficult to follow the lyrics,” he said. “I am learning.”As for Pochettino’s future, his U.S. contract expires after the World Cup. He is sure to receive offers from clubs in Europe, where he made his coaching name with Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, among others. He said he hasn’t ruled out staying with the U.S. program.“We told the federation we are open,” he said, “but we don’t want to distract when all the energy needs to be with my players.”If he were to stay, he said he’d like to help strengthen the sport’s foundation.“If the American people start to show passion in our sport too, why not be here being part of something that can create a legacy?” he said. “For me, the most important legacy is the connection between the national team and the fans. For me, the legacy is not to win the World Cup. Of course, we want to win, but that [connection] is the legacy we need if one day we want to be very successful and be consistent. Why not be part of that?”0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrad Stevens emphasizes Jaylen Brown's importance to Celtics, but won't speak on futureThere are two people everybody wants to hear from right now in the Boston Celtics organization: President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and star guard Jaylen Brown. The former reportedly attempted to trade the latter in a blockbuster deal for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Miami Heat swooped in and landed the Greek Freak on Monday night. That change of events left plenty of questions. How does Brown feel about his role on the team? Does he want a trade? Will Stevens pursue another deal for Brown before the summer is over? On Tuesday night, Stevens had to face some of these inquires at the Auerbach Center during a 15-minute press conference following the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft. In fact, he was asked point blank if his longest-tenured player would be on the team to start next season."Jaylen Brown is a big part of us," Stevens began. "I'm never going to predict the future, but every indication, everything that I think about over the past few years has been building around those guys. So, obviously, you never know. But at the same time, the one thing I want to make very clear is how valued he's always been."This matched Stevens' tone for the rest of the presser and his style of responding to weighty questions. He'd answer, but he wouldn't divulge much information or say definitively whether or not Brown would remain a Celtic."He's been amazing," Stevens described of his five-time All-Star. "He's been an amazing teammate, great person to be around. And whether that run ends 10 years from now when he retires, or before, there's a lot to celebrate. We have a great relationship, an open relationship where we talk about everything. I don't want to predict the future. But, I look at it as this is our team."Stevens did reveal that he's had multiple meetings with Brown, including one at the end of May and another in June. The de facto general manager has also communicated with Brown's agent, perhaps signaling that the offer for Antetokounmpo wasn't a complete blindslide. When the 2026-27 NBA season begins, Brown will turn 30 years old and be a true veteran. He said on his Twitch stream in early May that he'd like to play for the Celtics for the rest of the career — if it was up to him.Jaylen Brown clears the air around Tracy McGrady’s “frustration” comments immediately on stream:“Me and Brad have a great relationship. I love Boston. If it was up to me I could play in Boston for the next 10 years.”Via @FCHWPO on Twitch pic.twitter.com/dSsfIoPDw6— Daniel Donabedian (@danield1214) May 7, 2026Brown knew what he was doing when he added that qualifier, as he's no stranger to trade rumors and that's part of the reason why some expect him to want out of Boston. However, all that's been reported so far is that the Celtics have participated in trade talks for Brown and that a move could happen, yet nothing is guaranteed, per ESPN insider Shams Charania."There is a level of intention behind (these talks) with the Celtics, but that doesn’t mean a trade will necessarily happen," Charania stated during ESPN's draft broadcast. After fielding and maneuvering around questions from the media, Stevens will focus on the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft, which takes place on Wednesday night. The Celtics used the No. 27 overall pick to select forward. Chris Cenac Jr. and own the No. 40 pick as well.Perhaps Brown will be up next to talk, though, his comments probably won't stem from a formal press conference. He could hop on Twitch at any time and either fuel or defuse the trade rumors he's enveloped in.Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on:Blue Wire: https://tiny.ee/CdKp iTunes: https://tiny.ee/RK47 YouTube: https://tiny.ee/cOW3This article originally appeared on Celtics Wire: Brad Stevens praised Jaylen Brown but wouldn't shed light on his Celtics future0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMMAGA pastor said LGBTQ+ books & flags harm kids. Now he’s going to prison for sex with a child.Anti-LGBTQ+ MAGA pastor Silas H. Shelton of Wilmington, Ohio — a man who said that LGBTQ+-themed books and Pride flags harm kids — was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Monday for unlawful sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl. The judge said he gave Shelton the maximum sentence because he showed “no remorse” for his crimes during his trial. Police originally arrested Shelton for 12 counts of rape, sexual battery, gross sexual imposition, and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. However, he ended up pleading guilty to three third-degree felony counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and will serve a combined 15 years in prison. Afterward, he’ll have to register as a as Tier II sex offender every 6 months for the next 25 years, according to WKRC. Related “A travesty”: Cop reinstated after being fired for using anti-gay slur on the job Judge Andrew McCoy explained to the court that he punished Shelton with the maximum sentence because he had shown “absolutely no accountability for your actions” and “no remorse.” “You choose rather to blame the victim and claim that you, incredulously … were the victim of abuse at her home, a 14-year-old child,” McCoy said. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The abuse started in 2019 and involved a 14-year-old girl who belonged to Shelton’s congregation at Blanchester Community Church. The abuse reportedly did not stop until a few months before his arrest last October 16. During the summer of 2019, his victim lived in Wilmington with her parents, and Shelton later asked the victim to start working for his construction business. “He would pick her up most weekdays and return her home on days that typically no one was present,” Assistant Prosecutor Andrew Sievers said. Sievers had sexual conduct with the minor while returning from a work site, as well as at Cowan Lake and the Holiday Inn at the Roberts Center, the indictment said. Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Shidaker told the court, “[Shelton] pulled off on a wooded back road with her and climbed on top of her. The factual basis stated that he took her virginity,” adding, “In this courtroom, he admitted those facts were true.” A probable cause statement from the detective involved in the case reportedly said that Shelton and his victim had a complex dynamic, suggesting that “the young woman felt groomed, trapped, and manipulated due to Shelton’s position as a religious authority,” WLWT5 reported. During his sentencing, the victim told Judge McCoy that no sentence could ever give her back what Shelton took from her. In 2023, Shelton spoke before the Little Miami Local School District board to decry the availability of LGBTQ+ books in schools. He was specifically angry that his 12-year-old daughter had seen the LGBTQ+ graphic novel series Heartstopper by Alice Oseman available at a book fair. “I don’t think kids should ever question their sexuality. I don’t think kids should ever explore their sexuality. I don’t think any of that stuff ever ought to be in our school,” Shelton said. “But [my daughter] come home asking me why certain books were in that book fair, which were pertaining to books of gay. One of them was Heartstopper, which is where a gay boy pressures a straight kid into kissing him.” “I don’t understand why we have this kind of stuff in our libraries, in our book fairs.” He spoke about the “health risk of being gay” and claimed the biggest risk is mental health. “We worry about drugs, we worry about alcohol… but we’re not allowed to talk about the health risks of kids being gay.” He also called Pride flags in classrooms “a disgusting display” and said they caused division. Shelton’s rant led the district to pause all book fairs and form a special committee to screen the books being sold. The district then stopped holding book fairs during the school day, only to reopen them during evening parent-teacher conferences so that kids were supervised by parents while browsing. “Shelton’s arrest shouldn’t surprise anyone,” wrote independent journalist and atheist activist Hemant Mehta on his blog, The Friendly Atheist. “For decades, men like him have stood at pulpits railing against love, hiding behind the Bible to mask their own bigotry. The louder they scream about protecting children from homosexuality, the more certain you can be that their own hands are unclean.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLeeds sign former Liverpool midfielder on free transfer following contract expiryLeeds sign former Liverpool midfielder on free transfer following contract expiryLeeds Set to Secure Harry Wilson on Free TransferLeeds United appear to have pulled off one of the more astute pieces of business of the summer, with reports from the BBC indicating that Harry Wilson has agreed a four year contract at Elland Road. The deal, subject to a medical and final paperwork, would see the Wales international arrive on a free transfer after his contract with Fulham expires. For a club returning to the Premier League, finding value is often as important as spending heavily. In Wilson, Leeds look set to acquire a player who combines top flight experience, creativity and a proven ability to contribute goals.Competition for his signature was reportedly fierce, making this a significant statement of intent from Daniel Farke’s side.Liverpool Academy Graduate Returns to SpotlightFor Liverpool supporters, Harry Wilson’s journey has long been a fascinating one. A product of the club’s academy, Wilson spent years building his reputation through successful loan spells before eventually leaving Anfield in 2021.Fulham paid £12 million to secure his services, and over the past four years he has developed into a dependable Premier League performer. While he never quite found a route into Liverpool’s first team during an era packed with attacking talent, his career trajectory has been impressive. Now 29, Wilson arrives at a stage where experience matters as much as potential. Leeds are not signing a prospect. They are signing a player who understands the demands of English football and who has consistently delivered in high pressure environments.Numbers Highlight Attacking ImpactWilson’s statistics from last season help explain why Leeds were so determined to complete the move. Across all competitions he produced 11 goals and eight assists in 38 appearances. That equates to a goal involvement roughly every other game, excellent numbers for a wide attacker operating in a Fulham side that often relied on collective organisation rather than individual brilliance. His ability from set pieces, willingness to shoot from distance and knack for producing decisive moments could prove invaluable for a newly promoted team expected to battle hard for Premier League survival.Fulham clearly recognised his value too. Reports suggest they made several attempts to persuade him to remain at Craven Cottage, making his expected departure all the more significant.Transfer Ambition Continues at Elland RoadWilson may be only the beginning of Leeds’ summer business. The Yorkshire club continue to monitor former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt, while Southampton’s Shea Charles remains another target despite reports of an initial £20 million approach being rejected. Those pursuits indicate a club looking to add quality throughout the squad rather than simply making up the numbers in the Premier League. For Harry Wilson, this move offers another chapter in a career defined by resilience and steady progression. For Leeds, it could be one of the smartest free transfers of the summer. Premier League survival often depends on players who can turn tight matches with a moment of quality, and Wilson has shown throughout his career that he possesses exactly that ability.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMateus Fernandes: Spurs’ plot to hijack Man United’s move explainedMateus Fernandes: Spurs’ plot to hijack Man United’s move explainedTottenham Hotspur are accelerating plans to hijack Manchester United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, according to a new report.Spurs on the huntHaving come perilously close to suffering relegation last season, Tottenham are prepared to spend big this summer to back Roberto De Zerbi after he steered them to safety on the final day with a 1-0 win over Everton. A £52 million deal has been struck to reunite the Italian manager with Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, while an £80 million offer for Sandro Tonali has been rejected by Newcastle United. However, the Lilywhites have also stormed into the race for Fernandes, despite Manchester United having established themselves as frontrunners for the West Ham United starlet, who enjoyed a stellar campaign despite his side finishing eighteenth.Mateus Fernandes Premier League stats: 2025/26 SeasonSource: SofascoreThe aggression Spurs are demonstrating in the market is understood to have taken rivals, including the Red Devils, by surprise. Their “bullish” willingness to meet expensive valuations is hard to compete with, or can make it difficult for others to negotiate.Manchester United’s pursuit of Fernandes is a perfect example, as West Ham have placed a prohibitive £80 million asking price on the 21-year-old’s head, despite only two seasons of experience in the Premier League. Spearheaded by sporting director Jason Wilcox, Manchester United have sought to strike a cheaper deal, having already received the green light from Fernandes over his desire to complete a switch to Old Trafford. There has been widespread interest in the one-cap Portugal international, with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid all making enquiries. Nonetheless, United have maintained a firm grip on the race as the player is believed to be prioritising first-team opportunities, and there is confidence in M16 that a deal will be struck.Ready to strikeThis assurance is set to be firmly tested, however, as TEAMtalk reveals Tottenham are “preparing to launch a formal bid” for Fernandes after making “significant progress” in negotiations with his representatives. “Sources have confirmed that discussions with both Fernandes‘ camp and West Ham have accelerated over the past few days, leaving Spurs increasingly confident that they can win the race for one of the Premier League’s most sought-after midfielders.“As a result, we can reveal that Tottenham are now readying an offer worth around £75 million (€87m, $99m), a figure that would move them very close to West Ham’s initial £80 million valuation of the 21-year-old.”The report does state United remain in a “strong position” as Wilcox has “longstanding ties to the player dating back to his time at Southampton”. West Ham signed Fernandes from the Saints for £38 million last year in a deal which included a 15% sell-on clause.“Manchester United are not going away, however. Wilcox continues to work behind the scenes, and sources insist Old Trafford officials remain optimistic that their groundwork will ultimately pay off.”Sky Sports corroborates the intent from Spurs to hijack a deal by outbidding United, who are said to value Fernandes in the £60m range, but “may be prepared to offer more” if needed. However, in an interesting twist, The Sun claims well-placed sources have “doubted the seriousness” of Tottenham’s pursuit, suggesting Jorge Mendes, Fernandes’ agent, is the origin of this ‘interest’ as much as executives in North London. The Sun concludes that one of the main competitors for the former Sporting CP star, Real Madrid, “expect [him] to join United”, further justifying the confidence in M16. Final ThoughtsShould the decision fall down to a straight choice between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, there is little doubt which team Fernandes would pick. He considers his compatriot, Bruno Fernandes, an idol and the chance to play alongside him in the Champions League, in comparison to no European football at all with Tottenham, is a strong sales pitch. But the question of price – and United’s willingness to match West Ham’s demands – is far less certain, and it is here where Spurs smell their advantage. If they strike a club record deal with the Hammers, while United only agree terms with the player, he looks unlikely to leave London this summer.Featured image Julian Finney via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThree-Team Trade Idea Involving Shedeur Sanders Would Bring Another Star Receiver To PatriotsThree-Team Trade Idea Involving Shedeur Sanders Would Bring Another Star Receiver To Patriots originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New England Patriots already made a trade for a star receiver this offseason, but a new trade idea from Bleacher Report would net them another one.The Patriots moved on from Stefon Diggs to sign Romeo Doubs and acquire A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. They have a crowded receiver room right now, and Kayshon Boutte's name is being tossed around in trade rumors. He has noted that he wants to be in New England, but it does not change the fact that he's in a contract year, and targets will be tougher to come by this season in New England.Three-team trades in the NFL are rare, but not impossible. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox proposed this three-team trade between the Patriots, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals that would move Boutte, but surprisingly bring another wide receiver to New England:Patriots receive: wide receiver Michael WilsonCardinals receive: quarterback Shedeur Sanders, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and Browns' 2027 fourth-round pickBrowns receive: quarterback Jacoby Brissett and Patriots 2027 third-round pickIt's unlikely the Patriots would look into adding another receiver if they got rid of Boutte, but Wilson is a star. He had a breakout campaign last season, with shaky quarterback play at best. He scored seven touchdowns and logged more than 1,000 yards. He took advantage of his opportunities when Marvin Harrison Jr. was out, and could be an elite player in New England. As for the other two teams, the Cardinals need a quarterback, and Sanders would give them one who could end up being a franchise player. The Browns are in a tough spot with Sanders this year, with Deshaun Watson healthy and two first-round picks in the next draft. They will reportedly be targeting one of the quarterbacks in next year's class, so trading Sanders would make sense.Ultimately, the Patriots would be unlikely to accept a deal like this. They will not want to part ways with draft capital after giving up a first-round pick for Brown. Additionally, they don't necessarily need Wilson after adding Doubs and Brown. Even though they could be an elite trio, the Patriots seem to like what they have in Kyle Williams and hope he develops into more than a role player.More NFL: Perfect Patriots 2027 Free Agency Target Signs Extension With Current Team0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAnother champion from Brockton, AJ Dybantsa makes historyHailing from Brockton, AJ Dybantsa was selected number one overall by the Washington Wizards in Tuesday’s NBA Draft. He’s the first athlete born and raised in Massachusetts to be selected number one overall in any of the four major U.S. sports drafts (NBA, NHL, NFL, and MLB).Dybantsa, 6’9, 217 pounds, averaged 25.5 points per game this past season with the BYU Cougars. In January, Dybantsa passed Celtics legend Danny Ainge for the most points posted by a BYU freshman in a game, recording 43 points in a 91–78 victory over Utah.Dybantsa played high school basketball at St. Sebastian’s School in Needham. He was offered scholarships from all the top universities, including Boston College, but Dybantsa said he chose BYU to play ball and keep a low profile off the court. The son of a Jamaican immigrant mother and a father from the Republic of Congo, Dybantsa is the latest athlete produced by the “City of Champions.” 80 years ago, heavyweight champion Rocky “the Brockton Blockbuster” Marciano trained at the old fire station on Pleasant Street - a building that had its electrical wiring installed by Thomas Edison. Fellow champion “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler also sculpted his legendary boxing career in Brockton. Both have statutes in the city. Brockton also produced Ken MacAfee, a 3x All-American tight end who caught passes from Joe Montana at Notre Dame. He was third in voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1977 and won the National Title that same year. He played two seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers.There’s plenty more on the list who were either born or raised in Brockton: Patriots WR Greg McMurtry, pro golfer Megan Khang, Cubs catcher Mike Gordon, and Lou Montgomery - the first Black athlete at Boston College. There’s a certain aura that comes with being the first overall selection in any major sports draft. The names of both successful players and those branded as “busts” are remembered almost equally. Notable number one picks in the NBA include newly crowned champion Karl Anthony-Towns, Allen Iverson, Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, and Bill Walton. Then there’s the names remembered infamously: Ben Simmons - taken before Jayson Tatum, Markelle Fultz, Anthony Bennett, and Sam Bowie - “the man drafted before Michael Jordan.”Dybantsa joins the Washington Wizards, a team that has lost nearly 200 games over the past three seasons. Their last series win in the playoffs came in 2017. Prior to Dybantsa, the franchise’s most recent number one selection was John Wall in 2010. Regardless of expectations from the Wizards, fans, pundits, or anyone else, it’s a good day for Brockton and for the state that invented basketball.Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.Follow Boston 25 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch Boston 25 News NOW0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMaple Leafs’ Morgan Rielly linked to Sharks, Ducks after trade list reportMorgan Rielly’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs has become a major NHL offseason storyline. The speculations have intensified even more after reports suggested the veteran defenseman is open to a move out of Toronto.TSN analyst Darren Dreger reported on X that Rielly’s agent, J.P. Barry, has submitted a list of four Western Conference teams that the defenseman would consider joining.MORE: Maple Leafs face fresh Auston Matthews questions amid Brady Tkachuk trade“Morgan Rielly’s agent J.P Barry has submitted a list of 4 Western based teams Rielly is willing to go to,” Dreger wrote. “This will be a team by team assessment and depending on the fit, there could be some flexibility to add teams to the list.”While the full list remains undisclosed, insider Chris Johnston pointed directly toward two emerging Pacific Division clubs.“I believe a move to San Jose or Anaheim, teams like that that are on the rise would have some appeal,” Johnston said on First Up on June 23.The speculation arrives during a dramatic organizational reset in Toronto. After a disastrous 2025-26 campaign, the Maple Leafs finished last in the Atlantic Division with a 32-36-14 record. The club allowed 299 goals, ranked near the bottom of the NHL defensively, and underwent sweeping front-office changes.Rielly, meanwhile, endured one of the toughest seasons of his career. He recorded 11 goals and 25 assists in 78 games while posting a career-worst minus-18 rating. The 32-year-old still has four years remaining on his contract, carrying a $7.5 million cap hit through 2029-30.Why do San Jose and Anaheim make sense for Morgan Rielly?Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly (44) before a game at Ball Arena. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn ImagesIt makes sense because both destinations offer logical fits.San Jose Sharks enters the offseason with significant cap space (over $40 million for 2026-27) and a young core led by Macklin Celebrini. The Sharks improved to 86 points last season and could benefit from adding an experienced puck-moving defenseman to support their developing roster.Anaheim Ducks appear even closer to contention. The Ducks reached the second round of the playoffs and feature rising stars such as Cutter Gauthier and Leo Carlsson. Their blue line still lacks a proven veteran capable of handling major minutes and driving offense from the back end.Rielly has spent 13 seasons with Toronto since being selected fifth overall in 2012. He became one of the defining players of the franchise’s modern era through leadership, durability, skating, and offensive production.MORE: Maple Leafs’ goalie plans include 2X Stanley Cup champ after Joseph Woll tradeIf Toronto fully commits to a youth-focused retool after winning the first overall pick and preparing to draft Gavin McKenna, moving Rielly could accelerate that transition. For San Jose or Anaheim, acquiring him would represent more than a hockey move. APNEWS.COMUS says chemical maker Chemours to pay $450M to settle ‘forever chemicals’ caseThe Chemours Company's PPA facility at the Fayetteville Works plant near Fayetteville, N.C., June 15, 2018. (AP Photo/Gerry Broome, File)2026-06-24T13:59:59Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has reached a multi-state settlement with chemical giant Chemours Co. over years-long, illegal discharges of synthetic “forever chemicals” used to make products resistant to water, grease and stains. The settlement is the first by the federal government to resolve enforcement claims against a manufacturer of harmful chemicals known as PFAS.The Associated Press learned details of the settlement ahead of an announcement expected later Wednesday. Under the agreement, Chemours will pay a civil penalty of $22.5 million for alleged violations and spend $90 million over 15 years to mitigate PFAS discharges in three states: West Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey. Chemours, a spin-off of chemical maker DuPont, also agreed to install PFAS pollution controls for and surface water discharges and air emissions at a West Virginia facility; supply clean drinking water to communities near its West Virginia and New Jersey sites; and implement controls to reduce releases of PFAS and other toxic chemicals from its facility in North Carolina. Combined, the penalties and relief programs are estimated to cost about $450 million, the Justice Department said. The settlement allows Chemours to continue manufacturing PFAS for commercial and military applications while preventing future contamination and protecting communities from existing pollution, said Adam Gustafson, principal deputy assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division. Read More Justice Department says settlement protects public health “The Trump administration recognizes the important role of Chemours for it commercial and military obligations,’' Gustafson said in an interview. “The settlement protects public health while preserving that important balance.” The settlement against a major PFAS manufacturer “delivers on the Trump administration’s promise to make polluters pay and stop PFAS contamination at the source,” said Jeffrey Hall, assistant EPA administrator for enforcement and compliance assurance. The agreement will greatly reduce PFAS contamination of water, land and air and even begin to mitigate past harm, Hall said. “This settlement brings Chemours into compliance with the law and holds it fully accountable,” he said. The settlement comes as the Trump administration is expected to propose softening Biden-era limits on “forever chemicals” in drinking water, while delaying but keeping tough standards for two common types of the substance. The proposal will start the formal process of rolling back parts of the first-ever limits on PFAS in drinking water finalized during former President Joe Biden’s administration. Officials at the time found they increased the risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and babies being born with low birth weight. The agency is committed to addressing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water while following the law and ensuring that regulatory compliance is achievable for drinking water systems, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said. Chemours discharged PFAS into rivers in three statesThe settlement determined that facilities Chemours operates in the three states have discharged PFAS into the Ohio River, Cape Fear River and Delaware River, respectively, in violation of permits required by the Clean Water Act and state laws. Chemours also violated legal requirements under the federal Toxic Substances Control Act at all three facilities. As a result of the alleged violations, people living near the facilities were exposed to illegal PFAS, officials said. PFAS are widely used and found around the world, with scientific studies showing that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals. The violations continued for over a decade, the Justice Department said. The facilities were previously owned for many decades by DuPont. The settlement announced Wednesday does not resolve DuPont’s liability for past PFAS violations, officials said.A federal judge last year ordered Chemours to stop discharging unlawful levels of cancer-causing chemicals into the Ohio River from the company’s Washington Works plant in West Virginia. The pollutants endanger the environment, aquatic life and human health, U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin wrote in the August 2025 order. The West Virginia Rivers Coalition had asked Goodwin to require the company to immediately comply with its permit limits after violating them for more than five years.DuPont, Chemours and another company, Corteva, agreed to pay New Jersey up to $2 billion last year to settle environmental claims stemming from PFAS. The federal settlement does not affect the state case. The federal consent decree calls for 14 specific treatment systems to reduce PFAS in wastewater, stormwater and groundwater from the West Virginia plant. Chemours will test drinking water near the West Virginia and New Jersey sites and provide treated or alternative clean water. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer U-M star Yaxel Lendeborg on MSU: 'Little brother to me forever'Former Michigan basketball star Yaxel Lendeborg is going to face harder questions now that he is in the NBA.Like, what exactly would he endure to get his No. 23?Lendeborg was drafted at No. 11 overall by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft on Tuesday, June 23, joining future Hall of Famers in Stephen Curry and Draymond Green on a star-studded roster. There might be some initial friction between the Michigan man Lendeborg and the Michigan State graduate Green, however, and not just because of the rookie-veteran dynamic.Green, who has spent all 14 NBA seasons with the Warriors, has worn the No. 23 since his rookie season in 2012-13. Lendeborg also wore No. 23 with the Wolverines last season, and so an intrepid reporter asked Lendeborg after he was drafted if he would consider some Spartan-related hazing from Green to get the number."What if Draymond says, 'You can have Number 23 if you rock Michigan State gear for the entire season?'" the reporter asked.Lendeborg thought about his answer for a few seconds before shaking his head."Nah," he said. "I'm not doing that, man. I hate those guys."Lendeborg was the Big Ten Player of the Year and a first-team All American in his one season at Michigan in 2025-26, helping lead the Wolverines to their second-ever national championship in April. Lendeborg played especially well in two wins over the Spartans, putting up 26 points and 12 rebounds in an 83-71 win at Breslin Center on Jan. 30 and scoring 27 points in a 90-80 home win at Crisler Center on March 8. "I went 2-0 against them this year, so they're going to be little brother to me forever and I'm not going to represent the losers, ever," he said. This is unreal 😂😂 pic.twitter.com/CRFzxKDQN0— Clayton Sayfie (@CSayf23) June 24, 2026Lendeborg was one of three Michigan big men to be selected among the first 12 draft picks, with Morez Johnson Jr. reuniting with former Michigan coach Dusty May as the No. 9 pick from the Dallas Mavericks and center Aday Mara selected at No. 12 overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was part of a historic day for Michigan basketball as the three became the first trio of U-M players to be selected in the top 15 of an NBA draft. Their selections highlight the complementary basketball that led to success with the Wolverines, something they will hope to take to the next step in the pros. But as Lendeborg pointed out, there are some steps he won't be willing to take. Fresh off a hat-trick in Canada’s emphatic 6-0 win over Qatar, David shut down any transfer rumors straight away: "I will stay at Juventus, I have five years left on my contract".After a difficult season in front of goal, the Canadian striker is now aiming for redemption, with the goal of becoming a key figure again in the Juventus shirt next season.Milan, keeping tabs on Evertton AraujoMilan continue to monitor the market in search of young talents to add to Amorim’s project. According to Brazilian outlet Coluna do Fla, the Rossoneri have set their sights on Evertton Araujo, a midfielder born in 2003 who currently plays for Flamengo. The report, echoed by journalist Leo José, mentions a €15 million offer along with a five-year contract proposed to the player.Flamengo are said to be considering the offer, given that they own 70% of the player’s economic rights, while the remaining 30% belongs to Volta Redonda, his former club. For now, there has been no official confirmation of the deal, so it remains a transfer rumor to keep an eye on in the coming days.Inter, Atletico swoop for SoletOumar Solet continues to attract interest from several top European clubs after an excellent season with Udinese. Long on Inter’s radar, with the Nerazzurri seeing him as a priority to strengthen their defense, Solet could now find himself at the center of a real transfer battle. According to footmercato.net, Atletico Madrid have also added the center-back to their list of targets for next season. The Spanish club are reportedly ready to speed things up and submit an initial official offer. Udinese, for their part, value the player at no less than €25 million. Napoli, Lang could help pave the way to DodôAn interesting transfer axis could take shape between Napoli and Fiorentina. The Partenopei have been closely followingDodô for some time, with the Fiorentina Brazilian full-back seen as an ideal profile to strengthen the right flank. Meanwhile, according to TMW, Fiorentina have set their sights on Noa Lang. The Tuscan club’s interest in the winger could spark a chain of transfer moves between the two sides. At the moment, there is no talk of a single deal involving both players, but developments in the respective negotiations could lead Dodô and Noa Lang down opposite paths during this transfer window.Roma, Bergvall and O'Riley in their sightsRoma are looking ahead to the future of their midfield while Koné’s situation remains one to watch. According to Leggo, the French midfielder could leave Trigoria during this transfer window. Among the profiles Gasperini is considering to replace him is Lucas Bergvall, the highly rated Swedish talent born in 2006 and owned by Tottenham. The young midfielder, currently on international duty with his national team, is valued at around €35 million by Spurs. Another alternative is Matt O'Riley, the Danish Brighton midfielder who has already been linked with the Giallorossi in the past. Fresh from a loan spell at Marseille, the player remains a profile appreciated by the Roma management.Lazio, Lotito continues to stand firm over GilaMario Gila is one of Napoli’s main targets to strengthen the defense. Despite Lazio’s firm stance, the Partenopei have reportedly not given up on the trail and have come back with a new proposal. According to the Messaggero, Napoli have put a €20 million offer on the table for the Spanish center-back. Lazio, however, continue to ask for between €25 million and €30 million to let the defender leave. The Biancocelesti, moreover, do not seem willing to accept alternative formulas such as loans involving Rafa Marin and Lorenzo Lucca, two profiles appreciated by Gattuso. However, that solution does not convince Lazio, who are interested exclusively in a suitable cash offer.Fiorentina, Thorstvedt in pole position, but also Ekkelenkamp and BernabéFiorentina continue to work on strengthening their midfield ahead of next season. According to La Nazione, the name at the top of the Viola management’s list is Kristian Thorstvedt, the Sassuolo midfielder who has reportedly already given his approval for a move to Florence. The Tuscan club are said to be focusing their efforts on the Norwegian and are ready to move into the decisive phase of the negotiations. At the same time, Fiorentina are also keeping other midfield options open. Among the profiles being monitored are Jürgen Ekkelenkamp of Udinese and Adrián Bernabé of Parma, a player already watched in the past and who now seems more willing to consider a new experience away from Emilia. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat's the latest on Bears RT Darnell Wright's contract extension? The Chicago Bears offense had immediate success under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, where quarterback Caleb Williams had a breakout year behind one of the best offensive lines in the league. While All-Pro Joe Thuney was the focal point of that revamped group, Darnell Wright continued to establish himself as one of the best right tackles in the league.Wright, selected 10th overall by the Bears in 2023, had the best year of his young career earning second-team All-Pro honors while being part of an offensive line that paved the way for the league's third-best rushing attack and allowed the second-fewest sacks in the regular season. Naturally, Chicago is expected to lock him down to a long-term contract extension, but it's all a matter of when as Wright heads into the final year of his rookie deal. ESPN's Courtney Cronin provided an update on an expected contract extension for Wright, and she believes a deal will get done before training camp kicks off July 28.The Bears would like to get an extension done with the former first-rounder before training camp, which is typically when they've struck new deals in the past (Cole Kmet in 2023, DJ Moore in 2024). Despite playing most of last season with a torn UCL, Wright put together the best season of his career and earned second-team All-Pro honors.Wright has been an anchor on the offensive line since his rookie season, and he's also earned respect from his head coach. Johnson had nothing but praise for Wright, who has directly impacted how the offense operates."He just continues to get better," Johnson said. "When you watch us on offense, we're certainly a little bit more righthanded than lefthanded, and that is with him in mind. I think he's one of those tackles that's a powerful player and can displace guys off the line of scrimmage."Wright has been one of the most important players on the Bears offense since 2023, and he's in the long-term plans as Chicago looks to establish their offense as consistently one of the best in the NFL.Follow Bears Wire on Twitter, Facebook and InstagramThis article originally appeared on Bears Wire: Bears RT Darnell Wright contract extension expected this summer0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.404MEDIA.COThe Trump Administration’s New Census Data Rules Are a Policy DisasterBehind closed doors and without expert input, the Trump administration issued a major policy change to how census data is released. Data experts are concerned the result will be less reliable public data related to redistricting, natural disasters, the workforce, housing, and more.On June 4, the Trump administration released an order, Disclosure Avoidance for Statistical Products, that forbids “any use of noise infusion” for statistical products. “Coarsening shall be the preferred category of Disclosure Avoidance methods for all statistical products,” the order states. “Suppression shall be permitted as a last resort, only to be used when coarsening is prohibited by law or would substantially defeat the accuracy or usability of a statistical product.” In statistical terms, noise infusion is a common and accepted technique for privacy protection when working with data: it creates “fuzz” or random values within a dataset, making the published statistics slightly different from the actual, sensitive data. Coarsening is the process of grouping and rounding data, or reporting it in ranges instead of potentially identifiable specifics. Suppression is what it sounds like: redacting information, replacing it with asterisks, or not releasing the data entirely. NPR’s Hansi Lo Wang first reported on the policy change and its implications. People who work with census data and statistical analysis are worried that limiting the ways the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) can release data will severely limit what information ends up available to the public.Data coming out of small communities and industries, especially, could be heavily affected by the change. “Because ‘coarsening’ (grouping, rounding, reporting in ranges) and suppression are the only not-prohibited tools named in the order, it means that to keep information safe, the Census Bureau and BEA need to group small things (like small communities or small business types) into larger ones, or they need suppress the data completely,” Beth Jarosz, a senior fellow at Georgetown University's Massive Data Institute and vice president of the Association of Public Data Users, told me in an email. “Small industries may get rolled into bigger industry categories. Small counties may get rolled into county groups or not reported at all.”On June 17, five groups — the Population Association of America, Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics, Association of Public Data Users, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, and Association of Population Centers — released a joint statement condemning the order. “This order subverts processes developed over decades to foster transparency and public trust and creates a scenario in which there will either be less privacy for our personal information, or less usable data, or both,” the statement says. The Director of Science Policy for the American Statistics Association Steve Pierson wrote that the order “handcuffs the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis in terms of the techniques they can use for protecting the privacy of respondents.” John Abowd, the former Associate Director for Research and Methodology and Chief Scientist at the Census Bureau, posted a list of data products on Linkedin that this order would affect. These include the OnTheMap for Emergency Management system, a public data tool that provides real-time U.S. population and workforce statistics for areas being affected by natural disasters; Quarterly Workforce Indicators which include data about employment, job creation and destruction, wages, hires, and more; business formation and dynamics statistics; veteran employment statistics; data related to post-secondary educational outcomes, and many more. Many of these use noise infusion, which Trump’s order just banned. There’s also confusion about how this order will even be enacted in practice. “Regarding the datasets that used noise infusion, it is unclear how this policy will impact public access,” Lynda Kellam, who leads the Research Data and Digital Scholarship team at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries and is a founding organizer of the Data Rescue Project, wrote following the order. “The policy is intended to be retroactive, raising concerns that data might be removed, but how that will play out is uncertain.” In the immediate fallout, at least, we’re already losing some public information. As Wang from NPR pointed out on Bluesky last week, multiple webpages related to noise infusion and differential privacy on the Census Bureau's website were removed following the order. Most of those pages have since been restored. At the Data Rescue Project, a team led by Lena Bohman has been proactively collecting and archiving Census Bureau working papers and making them available to the public. Jaroz said that along with the risk of unreliable or missing data, the abandonment of long-agreed-upon privacy protection methods can damage public trust in Census data. “When the Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis gather data, they promise respondents that they will keep responses confidential. When a person responded to the American Community Survey or a business owner provided information about their employees or sales, they expected that the Census Bureau and BEA would protect that information. By taking away tools that those agencies use to protect privacy and confidentiality, people may question whether or not Census and BEA can live up to that promise,” she said. “Similarly, the Census Bureau and BEA are producing information for public benefit. People respond, for example, to the American Community Survey (at least in part) because it will benefit their community. If the new rule results in cutting back how the data can be published and used, it also weakens trust and it is worth responding.” As Wang noted, America First Legal, a law group co-founded by Trump's deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller, attempted to force the release of new 2020 Census data in a lawsuit last year, by challenging the Census Bureau's differential privacy system. Judges ruled it was too late to sue, but they refiled the case in February. As NPR also reported last year, Trump and Republicans in Congress have been pushing to exclude people living in the U.S. without legal status in the 2030 Census. “People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in August 2025. This would be a radical change in how the Census has been conducted for more than 200 years. Redistricting and gerrymandering have been a massive fight for the Trump administration for years, and has ramped up ahead of the 2026 midterms, as the Supreme Court recently weakened the Voting Rights Act and allowed for more redistricting that would favor Republican control of the House. The data policy change is also happening in light of the Trump administration’s gutting of Census practice test locations in the South. In February, the Associated Press reported that the administration is eliminating four out of the six locations that were slated to test new methods for the 2030 census. “The Census Bureau would be essentially flying blind into communities that need testing most — tribal lands, rural areas with limited connectivity and places with historically low response rates,” Mark Mather, an associate vice president at the Population Reference Bureau, told the AP. “You can’t fix what you don’t test.”0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJoe Root reclaims no. 1 spot in ICC Test rankings ahead of Trent Bridge decider against New ZealandJoe Root has returned to the summit of the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings, reclaiming the No. 1 position in the latest rankings released on June 24, 2026. The England batting stalwart dethroned teammate Harry Brook, who had occupied the top spot for just two weeks after overtaking Root on June 10. Root's return to the pinnacle marks the 12th time in his illustrious career that he has held the No. 1 ranking in Test cricket.Root overtakes Brook and HeadThe latest rankings update follows the conclusion of the second Test between England and New Zealand at The Oval. Although England suffered a crushing 253-run defeat, Root's scores of 46 and 77 proved enough to propel him back above both Harry Brook and Australia's Travis Head in the batting charts. Brook's reign at the top therefore comes to an end after a brief two-week stint, with Root once again establishing himself as the world's highest-ranked Test batter.Trent Bridge decider awaitsRoot will now have the opportunity to strengthen his grip on the No. 1 ranking when England take on New Zealand in the series-deciding third Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, beginning on June 25. With the three-match series level at 1-1, both sides head into the contest with plenty at stake.England claimed the opening Test at Lord's by 115 runs before New Zealand responded emphatically with a dominant 253-run victory at The Oval, shifting momentum firmly in their favour ahead of the decider. One of England's biggest concerns will be finding a way to counter New Zealand pace spearhead Matt Henry, who tore through the batting lineup at The Oval with a remarkable match haul of 11 wickets, including figures of 5/80 and 6/29. The hosts will also be eager to make amends in the World Test Championship standings after being docked 12 WTC points and fined 50 percent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second Test.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

Sometimes it grows through years of shared experiences, major life events, and friendships that survive long after the final whistle blows.Training camp will arrive soon enough, bringing renewed expectations and another championship chase. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWednesday Open ThreadJun 23, 2026; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Kazuma Okamoto (7) hits a single against the Houston Astros in the seventh inning at Rogers Centre. Mandatory Credit: Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images | Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images Yeah, an Open Thread two days in a row. But I’m going to be gone most of the day.I rode 80 km yesterday and I feel fine this morning, maybe a little soreness in that foot. I’m going for 50-60 today, and then two days off and the MS Ride. I’ve raised $3702, so beat my goal. I might give another donation to get to $4000 because I like neat numbers. I’m 21st out of 362 riders for donations. I’m lucky to have friends. The MS Ride is on the weekend and the weather looks terrible. I’m a fair weather biker, but I’ll do this ride as long as the weather is safe. Most years we’ve had a very nice weekend.Thank you to the ones on here that donated. If you would like to give a last minute donation, I’d appreciate it. My page is here.Yesterday Shane Bieber was activated and Lazaro Estrada was optioned to Buffalo. Hayden Juenger was DFAed. I would have liked to see Shane pitch deeper into the game. Would also have liked Joey Loperfido to have stuck out in the 11th inning. Again, use the thread to chat about anything you’d like. Can also use it as a Game Thread for the Canada-Switzerland game. I wanted to get one of those black team Canada Jerseys but everywhere is sold out around here (unless I buy the 2XL). Enjoy your day.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima

APNEWS.COMHow Americans are feeling about the country’s 250th anniversary, according to new pollsA Ferris wheel is seen on the National Mall for the 250 Anniversary celebration, Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)2026-06-24T09:07:23Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Duane Mitchell has big plans for the United States’ 250th anniversary.Mitchell, a 78-year-old veteran in Montana, plans to take a red, white and blue 1954 Chevrolet pickup that he restored and drive it in local parades for the Fourth of July. In honor of the country’s milestone anniversary, he bought a decorative eagle to mount on the back of the truck, accompanied by American flags.“I’ll be driving my pickup,” he said, referring to his role in the parades. “Usually we freeze a whole bunch of candy, and I have a couple of kids from down the block who get in the back and throw candy out. Everybody loves it.” Mitchell isn’t the only one looking forward to this year’s festivities. About 4 in 10 U.S. adults feel “proud” about the country’s 250th anniversary, according to a new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Roughly 3 in 10 say “excited” describes their emotions. The milestone will be marked with events across the country, and President Donald Trump has planned several for the nation’s capital, including a fair on Washington’s National Mall. But as the celebrations begin, many Americans also feel indifferent or conflicted about celebrating the country. Other Gallup polling shows that most Americans now feel the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be disappointed with how the U.S. has turned out, a substantial increase from 25 years ago. Most Republicans and older adults feel proudMost Republicans say that “proud” or “excited” describes how they are feeling about the United States’ 250th anniversary. About 7 in 10 Republicans say pride describes their emotions, compared with about 3 in 10 independents and roughly 2 in 10 Democrats. Older Americans — those ages 60 and older — are also mostly feeling proud, with about 6 in 10 saying this describes how they feel about the nation’s anniversary. Mitchell, the Montana veteran, wants the country to be “celebrating it to the maximum.” As a Vietnam War veteran who was drafted into the war, he wants Americans to remember the men and women who have given their lives to protect the freedoms they have today. Read More “It was a sacrifice,” Mitchell said, referring to his service. “The most important thing about the celebration is understanding that freedom is not free, and it never will be free, so you need to celebrate that.” About half of Republicans, 54%, say they feel excited about the country’s anniversary. As the country marks 250 years of independence, most Americans believe the country has succeeded in achieving its founding ideals, according to new Gallup polling. About 7 in 10 U.S. adults say that America has succeeded “a great deal” or “a fair amount” in achieving the ideals for which the country was founded. That view is shared by a majority of Democrats, independents and Republicans — though Republicans are especially likely to say the country has succeeded. Democrats and young people feel conflicted or indifferentMore Democrats and young people say “conflicted” or “indifferent” describes their feelings about America 250.About 4 in 10 Democrats and roughly 3 in 10 adults under 30 say “conflicted” describes their feelings “extremely” or “very” well. About 3 in 10 in each case feel “indifferent.” Laura Davis, a 44-year-old in Chicago who identifies as a progressive liberal, has struggled with what she describes as the “American declarations of grandiosity” this year, including Trump’s White House ballroom construction and the repainting of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. She believes that money could be better spent on Americans in need, as well as international aid, and she worries the country’s reputation is being damaged by the Trump administration’s actions.“It doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the things that do make America a unique and in some ways exceptional place to be,” she said. “But I think it’s more nuanced than that, and I hope that doesn’t get lost in the celebration.”About 8 in 10 Americans say the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be disappointed with how the country has turned out, according to a new Gallup poll. Only about 2 in 10 say the signers would be pleased. That’s down significantly from 1999 — the first time the question was asked — when 55% believed they would be disappointed and 44% said they would be pleased. Sydney Crispin, a 39-year-old Democrat in Maine, believes the country’s “incredible” foundation is worth celebrating. Still, she is conflicted by what she sees as a decline in people’s ability to have respectful discourse, something she believes is at the heart of America’s identity. She hopes communities find ways to celebrate the remarkable parts of America this Fourth of July while still reflecting on its areas for improvement. Celebrating the 250th: Spending time with friends or family tops on listJust under half, 44%, of U.S. adults plan to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary by spending time with friends or family, according to a recent Gallup-With Honor poll. About 3 in 10 U.S. adults say they plan to watch coverage of America 250 events on television or social media. More than half of adults ages 65 and older plan to celebrate with friends or family, while nearly half plan to watch coverage of the event on television or social media. Adults under 30 are more likely to say they are not planning to celebrate at all. The Gallup-With Honor poll found about 2 in 10 U.S. adults plan to participate in a neighborhood or community event, while approximately 1 in 10 say they will be attending an official America 250 event.Lyle Nelson, a 67-year-old in Idaho, said he plans to maintain his tradition of watching the annual Macy’s firework show at home. Nelson — who agrees with a lot of what Trump has done in office — remarked that even though Trump was disappointed that he did not get reelected in 2020, he might be pleased that he’s the one in the White House during this historic event. “I wonder if he’s thankful that he gets to be president during the 250th anniversary,” Nelson said. “I think he’ll be excited for that.”___The AP-NORC poll of 2,596 adults was conducted April 16-20 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points. The Gallup-With Honor poll of 3,199 adults was conducted May 12-22 using a sample drawn from Gallup’s probability-based panel. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 2.1 percentage points. The separate Gallup poll of 1,001 adults was conducted May 1-17 using a sample drawn from Gallup’s probability-based panel. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 4.0 percentage points. LINLEY SANDERS Sanders is a polls and surveys analyst for The Associated Press. APNEWS.COMProgressive candidate concedes Colombian presidential election to Trump-backed outsiderSen. Ivan Cepeda, presidential candidate with the ruling Historic Pact Coalition, gives a press conference the day after the presidential election runoff in Bogota, Colombia, Monday, June 22, 2026. (AP Photo/Fernando Vergara)2026-06-24T14:30:57Z BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Progressive candidate Iván Cepeda on Wednesday conceded Colombia’s presidential election to Abelardo de la Espriella, a conservative outsider who was endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump.Election results showed de la Espriella, a businessman and lawyer who had never run for office, defeated Cepeda, a lawmaker, by 1 percentage point, or nearly 251,000 votes.“We assume with serenity, responsibility, and absolute resolve — and let there be no doubt about it — the role that circumstances demand of us,” Cepeda said in an address to the nation. “We will exercise a democratic, vigilant and constructive opposition.”The result effectively was an indictment of outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s government, whose policies Cepeda had promised to continue, including a largely failed effort to establish dialogue with multiple armed groups under a plan known as “total peace.” Electoral authorities published all but a fraction of the vote count hours after polls closed Sunday. Petro and Cepeda did not accept those results, with the latter saying he would wait for a recount to do so.___Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at https://apnews.com/hub/latin-america 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 1 Views 0 Anteprima
