BATON ROUGE – All the time and work put in on the sidelines during his first spring practice with LSU football back in March and April for Sam Leavitt was all about delayed gratification.No immediate results. Just work. What would stem from it would come later. And Leavitt was OK with that after the initial four-five months of his recovery from a Lisfranc injury he suffered in October of 2025 while at Arizona State. When he came out of his follow-up surgery back in April when the surgeon removed the pins placed in his foot during the first operation, the new LSU quarterback thought he'd be cleared shortly after.SAM LEAVITT Why did Sam Leavitt transfer to LSU? What to know about LSU football QB"It was definitely more challenging within the first four or five months," Leavitt told reporters following the Tigers' fifth fall camp practice Aug. 10. "I had a second surgery where I got the pins pulled so I have no hardware in my foot right now. Initially after that, I thought it was kind of just going to snap back into being full-go. That's just how my brain works. But just going through the process and keeping my head down and putting in the work. "Delayed gratification was a big thing for me. How much I can put in the work without seeing immediate results."While his new quarterback recovered from two foot surgeries, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said it was unrealistic at first to expect Leavitt to look good on the field during that time."We have high standards on how we want things and what we want them to look like. It was probably unrealistic what I was expecting him to look like when he can't move and he's, you know, just throwing without really having his weight to be pushed into," Kiffin said. "So now that he's healthy, he's had a great week (of practice). We're really excited about him."Leavitt was fully cleared before the team officially transitioned to its summer conditioning program back in June. He's been healthy since.In his first five practices with LSU, Leavitt has displayed his accuracy and ball security when the teams goes to 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills. Kiffin said he's "extremely pleased" with how he looks.The expectation from the head coach on how his projected starting quarterback should look during the first week of fall camp is there. How Leavitt feels has come a long way as well. Out on the field, he doesn't think about the foot injury at all. However, he's had to change up his pre-practice routine a bit to warm up his foot beforehand."After, I kind of figured out something with this whole medical staff on what kind of was limiting some of my foot coming back after that surgery. It kind of just like popped from there," Leavitt said. "It's just been incredible. I really don't think about it out on the field at all. Just have to warm it up a little bit before practice, just keeping my routine everything at night. It's really a zero thought process for me."With the start of the season four weeks away and the past 10 months behind him, Leavitt is ready to cash in on that delayed gratification."I mean, I'm 100% right now and I've been 100% for the past few months. You know, just want to show a lot of love to Dallas and the whole staff, just constantly grinding, getting me back. My health is one thing that I take very seriously," he said. "Whether it's the food I eat, the way I sleep, the way I recover. It's really never a question for me. (AP) — The hanging death of Tasia Fortune, whose body was found outside an abandoned house, has shaken her family and community in Mississippi, where two other people have been found hanging from trees in less than a year.Police have not indicated whether they consider the 29-year-old Black woman’s death suspicious, saying only that they are actively working “to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.”A week after her body was found, a memorial with a photo of her face surrounded by pink and white balloons, flowers and teddy bears remained Monday behind the home in a predominantly Black neighborhood.Jackson police officers responded to the home on Aug. 3 and discovered a body hanging in the backyard. Hinds County chief medical examiner investigator Jeremiah Howard later confirmed the identity as Fortune. Her body is now in the custody of the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death. Here’s what we know so far about Fortune’s death: What was Fortune doing when she was last heard from?Christy Spivey, Fortune’s mother, told ABC News on Sunday that she last saw her daughter on July 26. Fortune, a mother of four who had lived in Mississippi for more than 10 years, had traveled to Kentucky for a family reunion.She described her daughter as a loving mother who was not behaving out of the ordinary. “She did not do this to herself,” Spivey told the outlet. “I know my daughter, and she did not do this to herself.”On Wednesday, Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes wrote a letter to Mississippi U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger asking for assistance in the case. Where were the other hangings in Mississippi?Fortune’s death comes less than a year after the hanging deaths of 21-year-old Trey Reed, a Black student at Delta State University in Cleveland, and Cory Zukatis, an unhoused white man in his 30s, in Vicksburg.Police in Cleveland concluded Reed’s death was a suicide. Autopsy results were consistent with a preliminary examination of the body by the Bolivar County coroner, which found no evidence of foul play. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey was held out of practice on Monday with what the team described as general tightness.The 30-year-old McCaffrey had participated in every practice so far this summer for the 49ers as the team altered its schedule for training camp this year to eliminate stretches of three straight full practices.Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said McCaffrey was “doing fine” and the team was managing his workload. “Christian always kind of has his rep count in any camp,” offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said. “You guys are aware of the adjustments we’ve made to our schedule to kind of keep them from having too many off days. But in terms of his rep load, we’re right on track where we want to be. He’s a veteran player, so you got to monitor him and get him ready for the first week.” San Francisco is hoping to find a reliable backup for McCaffrey to lighten his workload after he led the NFL with 413 touches from scrimmage in the 2025 regular season.But the team has been short-handed at running back with the top three projected backups to McCaffrey also out with injuries. After retiring from the NFL on eve of the 2026 season, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has shed some light on his decision.Bridgewater, 33, officially announced his retirement in an Instagram post that explained his left knee – which he severely injured during a 2016 practice with the Minnesota Vikings – simply wasn't recovering the way it needed to for him to continue playing."It's so crazy 10 years ago around this time, I suffered one of the most gruesome knee injuries the game itself, it’s players and some doctors had ever seen," Bridgewater wrote. "Everything football related since 2016 had been fueled by the 'experts' predicting that I would never play football again. We really showed them by playing 10 more seasons!""However, this wheel of mine can no longer deal with something so simple as standing around on the turf field," he continued. "This thing just doesn’t recover the same way it did years ago so [I'd] rather officially hang it up. He returned to the field in 2017 but never started another game in Minnesota.From there, Bridgewater spent time with seven different organizations and logged action with six. He notably posted a 5-0 record in place of an injured Drew Brees with the New Orleans Saints in 2019, a stint that he parlayed into a starting job with the Carolina Panthers.Bridgewater made 15 starts for the Panthers before being traded to the Broncos ahead of the 2021 season. He started 14 games in Denver before spending his final four seasons as a backup quarterback with the Miami Dolphins, Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Bridgewater posted a 33-32 career record across 65 starts while completing 66.3% of his passes for 15,182 yards, 75 touchdowns and 74 interceptions. He earned only one career Pro Bowl nod, which came in 2015, but his 90.3 passer rating ranks 31st all-time among qualified quarterbacks.Bridgewater did not provide a concrete update about what would be next for him. He simply stated he is looking forward to spending time with "this sweet little angel of ours that’s coming in a couple of weeks." The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition is heating up now that training camp is here, and no one is backing down on social media from defending who they think should win the job. Through it all, the coaching staff has remained steadfast in their execution of this quarterback competition, while some on the outside consider it already Kyler Murray's job to lose.Despite those predetermined thoughts by some, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell doesn't seem worried about making a decision anytime soon, it seems. Speaking ahead of their night practice on Sunday, O'Connell gave his first true comments on the quarterback battle. He said, "Nothing has really changed from a standpoint of the timeline and things like that. So we'll see how the reps continue to go and when we feel like we're at that place, we're going to make sure we communicate that both in house and internally and obviously to you guys as soon as possible."He also added that he is surprised by where Murray is mentally in terms of handling his offensive system at this point in camp. "I think mentally he's definitely probably ahead of where I thought."The first preseason game should open this battle wide open and put someone in the driver's seat. WATERTOWN — Standouts Jackson McClemans and Markus Pitkin of Watertown Post 17 and Jehiel Aviles of the Aberdeen Smittys have each again earned all-state baseball honors.McClemans, a pitcher, and Pitkin, a center fielder, are among the 29 players who haved been named to the 2026 South Dakota Class A All-State American Legion Baseball team released on Monday, Aug. 10. The team is picked by the state's Class A coaches.McClemans is one of 15 players named to the all-state first team. Pitkin is one of 14 players selected to the second team.2026 POST 17 SEASON RECAP: Post 17 had top-3 finishes in both Class A high school & Legion seasonsMcClemans also earned first-team honors and Pitkin second-team honors on the South Dakota High School Baseball Association's Class A all-state team this spring.The second team also includes outfielder Jehiel Aviles of the Aberdeen Smittys, who received honorable mention on the 2025 South Dakota Class A All-State American Legion Baseball team.McClemans, Pitkin sparked solid season for Post 17McClemans and Pitkin helped lead Watertown Post 17 to a combined 38-25 record over the high school and American Legion Baseball seasons.After finishing second in the the state Class A high school tournament in May, Post 17 tied for third recently in the state Class A American Legion tournament at Rapid City.Over the spring and summer, McClemans went 11-5 on the mound with 80 strikeouts in 97 innings and a 1.22 earned-run average. He broke the program's season ERA record of 1.26 that was set in 1996 by Spencer Waite.Pitkin spearheaded Watertown's offense, batting .358 with 30 extra-base hits, 48 runs scored and 60 RBIs. McClemans is heading to play baseball and basketball at Mount Marty University in Yankton. Pitkin plans to play college baseball at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA.Aviles also shined for the SmittysAviles, also a center field, led the way for an Aberdeen squad that went 12-24 and did not qualify for the state tournament.Aviles batted .387 with a .511 on-base percentage. He also stole 23 bases and scored 39 runs.Rapid City Post 22, Sioux Falls West top squadState champion Rapid City Post 22 and runner-up Sioux Falls West each had five players named to the squad.Brothers Wyatt and Jaxson Reeder and Aiden Roberts each made the first team for Post 22. Texas’ rabidly anti-LGBTQ+ Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) tried to mock the Christianity of his U.S. Senate competitor, Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D) while speaking at a San Antonio political rally last Saturday. It immediately backfired when a heckler pointed out Paxton’s own religious hypocrisy. “[Talarico] said that you cannot be a Christian and support the oil and gas industry,” Paxton said, mischaracterizing Talarico’s remarks which called it a Christian value to protect the Earth from greenhouse gas emissions caused by a reliance on fossil fuels. Related Ken Paxton forced a children’s hospital to open a “detransition clinic.” Here’s what it will offer. “Now, I think that’s in Leviticus,” Paxton continued, mentioning a book of the Bible’s Old Testament. His crowd laughed. “If you can help me with it, I’m still looking, but that’s where I’m guessing [it is],” he continued. But as Paxton tried to move on, a heckler in the audience loudly and clearly said, “You cheated on your wife!” The audience quickly groaned and started chanting “USA!” as others led the heckler out of the venue. A woman has died and some 20,000 people have fled their homes so far.For days, scores of wildfires have burned across the province, nearly half of them out of control in hot, windy weather and prolonged drought. Thousands have fled on jammed roads as officials said even more communities could be threatened.The mayor of Summerland — home to about 12,000 people, which was ordered evacuated on Saturday night along with about 8,000 people in and around nearby Peachland — warned that the affected areas remained too dangerous to enter and that it was impossible to determine the scope of the destruction. The blaze — known as the Bald Range wildfire — remained out of control after racing toward Summerland and other communities along Okanagan Lake over the weekend. “It’s going to be quite a bit,” Mayor Doug Holmes said of the expected destruction. “We need to brace ourselves for that bad news when it’s time to go back. Everybody will know somebody who has lost a home.”Defense Minister David McGuinty said the Canadian Armed Forces were in constant contact with provincial and federal officials and were ready to respond if British Columbia formally requested military assistance. The federal government has already approved provincial requests for help with shelter and accommodations. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said an 80-year-old woman died while trying to escape the fire near Summerland. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the death was heartbreaking and that the federal government would continue supporting British Columbia. ESPN and the NFL Network reported that the extended pact has a base value of $16 million with incentives that could push it up to $20 million.It ends a period of limbo for Henry, who was about to enter the final season of the previous three-year extension he signed in 2024.“It means a lot,” Henry said. “They Kraft family has taken me in. They’ve been so good to me and my family, giving me a chance kind of in the middle of my career and we’ve just appreciated it kind of the whole time.”Signed as a free agent in 2021 following his four-year run with the Los Angeles Chargers, Henry has seen both ends of the success spectrum during his run with the Patriots. In his first season in New England, Henry was part of former coach Bill Belichick’s final playoff appearance with the team, which ended with a quick wild-card round exit. He then endured a three-year postseason drought that included back-to-back 4-13 finishes. Last season, Henry was a big part of the reason Maye finished second in MVP voting during New England’s run to the Super Bowl under new coach Mike Vrabel. Henry led the team with seven receiving touchdowns in 2025 and his 60 catches and 768 yards were second only to Stefon Diggs. Along the way Henry developed a close relationship with Maye off the field, a major factor in him wanting to remain in New England.
