Anti-LGBTQ+ official says separation of church & state is a weapon to dismantle our Republic
Indianas uber-conservative Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith (R) recently stated openly what many on the right have implicitly communicated for years: the belief that America is a Christian nation that should be governed by Christian values.Separation of Church and State is and always has been a lie a dangerous falsehood weaponized to dismantle our Republic, Beckwith, a pastor and self-described Christian nationalist, wrote on social media. From its very inception, this phrase was twisted to marginalize Christian values and strip away the moral foundation that has held America together. Related Unhinged GOP official rages about LGBTQ+ people performing ritual child sacrifice during Pride They want you to believe that faith and patriotism are separate that you must choose between God and country. That is unacceptable. Dont fall for it. We are a Judeo-Christian nation. Our Founders did not intend to erect a secular barrier between God and government they understood that faith and freedom are inseparable. We must reclaim that truth and not let secular agendas undermine what it means to be American.Separation of Church and State is and always has been a liea dangerous falsehood weaponized to dismantle our Republic. As LGBTQ Nation writer Dr. Warren Blumenfeld has outlined, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson were both staunch supporters of keeping religion and government separate.Every new and successful example, therefore, or a perfect separation between the ecclesiastical and civil matters, is of importance, Madison wrote in 1822, and I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in showing that religion and Government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together. And Jefferson wrote Virginias An Act for the Establishment of Religious Freedom, which became state law in 1786 and which, experts have argued, laid the foundations for the creation and passage of the First Amendment. The GOPs recent rise has coincided with a rise in the power of Christian nationalists, who have been emboldened and supported by the political right to use religion to accomplish a set of bigoted policies promoting white, Christian, and hetero-cis supremacy.Beckwith, for example, as godly as he claims to be, recently shared a postfrom Indianapolis Sure Foundation Baptist Church leader Justin Zhong inviting him to a church service, appearing to approve of the invitation. The Sure Foundation Baptist Church made national headlines recently when lay pastor Stephen Falco used slurs and called for murdering gay people during a mens preaching night. Beckwiths repost has since been deleted. The Lt. Gov. also said in Junethat LGBTQ+ people in ancient history and all the way up to today have a demonic spirit associated with the Mesopotamiangoddess Ishtar. That same month, he sent an alert to his followers on social media that Pride Month is a sign of Pagan Conquest that will bring ritual child sacrifice with glitter and hashtags. He claimed that Pride Month is part of a state-corporate-pagan alliance to reprogram society that forced people to listen to Harvey Milk sermons and support government-sanctioned grooming. Grooming is a word for tactics used by child molesters to gain the trust of their victims. When running for lieutenant governor in 2024, he referred to pro-choice voters as demonic. He said that Democrats had the Jezebel spirit and a boldness for immorality during a podcast interview last year. The host of the podcast said that the Jezebel spirit was ultimately about control, which is the spirit of witchcraft, as we know. Thats what Jezebel operated in. Beckwith nodded along. MAGA host says Taylor Swift must submit to Travis Kelce after wedding: You are not in charge
Anti-LGBTQ+ MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk went on a sexist tirade about Taylor Swifts engagement to Travis Kelce, saying that he hoped getting married would make her more conservative and less empowered. I think theres actually something here that we should all celebrate, Kirk said on his Real Americas Voice show. How often do we on this program talk about the three Ms make you a better citizen and more conservative, which of course is mortgage, marriage, and mating. Related Centrist think tank suggests banishing these words in order to fight back against MAGA He said Swifts liberalism could be explained by the fact that shes not yet married and she doesnt have children but that marriage could de-radicalize her.I want them to have lots of children, Kirk said. We want Taylor Swift on Team America. We want you to leave the island of the wokies. He then encouraged Swift to reject feminism and submit to your husband. How many more wars will we justify in the name of something humans canneverprove?
Someone on social media posed the question: Do you love God? I responded in the negative. The concept of god(s) is a human construction in the realm of concepts like race and gender roles. Related Inclusive church turns hateful graffiti into Pride mural: We make beautiful things out of the dust Some people may claim that their conceptualization of God helps them cope with the struggles and changes in their lives in an uncontrollable world. Thats fine for them. But I think that the concept of was constructed to divide us by imposing a hierarchical positioning of people and groups into us (the ingroup) versus them (the others, the marginalized, the heathens, the unbelievers, the outgroup). That question on social media could have asked whether we like the concept of race or gender roles, and I would have given the exact same response. All of these concepts divide people into hierarchical positions, creating a dynamic of power and privilege versus marginalization and oppression. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today God is certainly not in the same category as the natural elements of earth, water, fire, and air, which all living things on this planet have discovered uses for to sustain and enhance life. Gods, on the other hand, were invented by humans in their attempt to explain the mysteries of life and to justify their supposed place in the cosmos.Humans have raised major questions as the world spins around. Individuals and nations since recorded history have attempted to explain the mysteries of life through spiritual and religious consciousness. As people have come to believe their way as the right way, with all others as simple pretenders that could never achieve the truth or right connection with the deity or deities, individuals and entire nations are raped, pillaged, enslaved, and exterminated for believing differently. How many wars are we going to justify in the name of our God versus their so-called false gods? Someone said to me once that throughout the ages, more people have been killed in the name of religion than all the people who have ever died of all diseases combined.I doubt whether this is actually true, but I do think it highlights a vital point: We continually kill others and are killed by others over concepts that humans canneverprove.Throughout history, Jews and Muslims have killed each other, Christians and Muslims have killed each other, Christians and Jews have killed each other, Hindus and Muslims have killed each other, Catholics and Protestants have killed each other, Sunni Muslims and Shiite Muslims have killed each other, many faith communities have killed Atheists and Agnostics, and on and on and on. In psychology, there is the notion that insanity is doing something repeatedly while expecting different results. The insanity of the world continues because human beings do not know their history. They do not understand that we are doing something over and over again while expecting different results, namely, that peace will break out.Individuals and entire nations continue to believe that their reality fits all and that it is proper and right to force their beliefs onto others. They all claim to have God on their side. In reality, all religious doctrine stems from uncertainty and conjecture, from multiple gods and hybrid gods, to Adam and Eve, to the burning bush, to the parting of the Red Sea, to the immaculate conception and resurrection, to Muhammads rising to heaven from the rock, to the golden tablets. And it all began with thehumancreationof gods. So, rather than asking the question on social media, Do you love God? I prefer to ask instead: What do you think about any religion that justifies discriminatory treatment of other human beings?Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

3 friends allegedly called fa***ts, beaten & choked by mob. Theyre facing charges.
Three gender nonconforming patrons at a brewery in York, Pennsylvania, on Friday night were chased down and attacked by a group of men screaming at us and calling us fa***ts, according to one of the victims. In a Facebook message posted from the ER where one of their friends was under observation, Brady Pappas detailed the attack, which included an accusation that police responding to the incident dismissed everything that we said. Related Man burns 100 LGBTQ+, Black, & Jewish library books on social media video We are taking it very seriously, said York Mayor Michael Helfrich in response.According to Pappas, the confrontation started in the beer garden at Gift Horse Brewing Company, where Pappas and two friends, Tragedy and Vayne, were enjoying a night outside when a table of 5 near us began making comments towards the end of our meal. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today I was in the bathroom at the time, Pappas wrote, and Tragedy was on a smoke break when the table and Vayne exchanged a few words. We had already paid our tabs, left the bar, and were making our way across the street when the table began screaming at us and calling us fa***ts. The group then ran out of the bar, across traffic, and circled us on the sidewalk, saying things like If you wanna dress like women, act like women. They were threatening us and getting in our faces for a few minutes while staff and some bystanders were watching from across the street. As the three de-escalated the situation to our best ability and walked away from the group, Pappas said their harassers continued provoking them, screaming, Leave fa***ts! Get out of here! After exchanging yells from down the street, the group, led by one of the men, began running after us and attacked Vayne, Pappas wrote. After a struggle, one attacker threw Vayne to the ground and choked them to the point that they turned purple, passed out, and began seizing after coming back to consciousness about 5 seconds later. Tragedy and I were trying everything we could to help. I truly did not know what was going to happen to my sister as I was sobbing, trying to pull them off of Vayne, begging for them to stop.Thats when a Gift Horse staffer pulled the attacker off Vayne and restrained him until police arrived.Im so grateful for the witnesses who came to our aid, and consoled us. They were queer and ally community members who actually knew us, Pappas wrote.Unfortunately, from the moment we got Vayne off the ground, the group began blaming us for the entire thing, Pappas added. I heard them lie several times to bystanders and the police. And used because theyre gay as an excuse. The interactions with the cops were disappointing as they dismissed everything that we said. And this guy got to walk away with him and Vayne both getting charged with disorderly conduct. This was hate. Vayne never laid a hand on the guy until they had to defend themselves.York City Police Capt. Daniel Lentz said that no charging documents in the incident are currently available, according to the York Daily Record. Gift Horse management corroborated Pappas account the next day.Several despicable, poor excuses for human beings followed, harassed and violently attacked 3 people solely because they (the disgusting individuals) viewed the 3 as different and not conforming to the norm,' the Gift Horse posted Saturday. The brewery stated that staff members provided statements to the police, and management provided the attackers names based on information retrieved from their tabs.Needless to say, the individuals involved in this violent act of hate are permanently banned from Gift Horse property, the brewery said.Community outrage over the police response and a disorderly conduct charge for one of the victims had York City Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow on defense over the weekend. ANY incident where Hate Fueled Violence is alleged (in this community) will ALWAYS be a priority to myself, this Department, and York City Government as a whole, the commissioner posted Saturday. To that end, after consulting with Downtown Inc. Leadership (who were on top of this incident from the start, advocating for the Victims and the safety of the Downtown Community); (1) Ive ordered our Detectives back in (today) to do a thorough review of the case (i.e.; meeting with responding Officers, studying available surveillance video, speaking to victims, witnesses and persons involved as needed, reviewing the circumstances, and consulting with the DAs Office to make sure the most appropriate charges are filed) (2) Notified the Human Relations Commission about the incident, and (3) Deployed our departments new Trauma Responder Counselor (to follow-up with the individuals affected during this incident, to help them safely process through what occurred).Writing from the ER at 2 a.m. on Saturday, Pappas summed up the anxiety many not conforming to the norm' are struggling with today. Life has gotten so much scarier in this political climate and there are almost moments daily where Im made so physically uncomfortable and feel scared from negative interactions with strangers. Everywhere feels unsafe. A place I once felt on top of the world with my friends is unrecognizable, Pappas wrote. This was one of the scariest moments of my life. And I am just so glad my sisters and I are OK. As Vayne has said, its important we stand up for each other, but please be safe because these people do not know when to stop.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Chinas Xi seeks expanded role for Shanghai Cooperation Organization with development bank
Chinese President Xi Jinping gives a speech during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit at the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Center in Tianjin, China, Monday, Sept. 1, 2025. (Suo Takekuma/Pool Photo via AP)2025-09-01T05:23:22Z TIANJIN, China (AP) Chinese President Xi Jinping said China would accelerate the building of a SCO development bank at the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Tianjin on Monday, as he seeks to expand the organizations influence and scope. Currently, as the global situation becomes more complex and turbulent, member states are facing more arduous safety and development responsibilities, Xi said in opening remarks to the forum. Xi pledged $1.4 billion in loans in the next three years for members of the SCO, not specifically designated for this new bank.Xi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of a few dozen nations are meeting as part of the SCO. The group, originally seen as a foil to U.S. influence in Central Asia, has grown in size and influence over the years, but remains largely a security forum. With the addition of the bank and an emphasis on providing loans, Xi is attempting to expand the scope of the organization. China on messageHe wants to provide an alternate world order, because the US led-world order is very much in decline. This is the main narrative, said Alfred Wu, a professor at the National University of Singapores Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.Xi also said states should oppose the Cold War mentality, bloc-based confrontation and bullying, and safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core while advocating for an equal and orderly multipolar world, an inclusive economic globalization, and promote the building of a more just and reasonable global governance system. Xis messaging did not stray far from Chinas past comments, as opposition to a Cold War mentality is a reference to the U.S. opposition of China, as well as its withdrawal of funding from some U.N. agencies. But at this moment in time, its consistency is the message, Wu said. Founded in 2001, the SCOs membership now includes Russia, Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan and Mongolia are observer states, and 14 other countries, mostly from Southeast Asia and the Middle East, serve as dialogue partners. The summit comes days ahead of a planned military parade that Beijing will host, and the country is taking the opportunity to invite its allies and neighbors. Focus on conflictOn Sunday, Xi met with Modi where they vowed to resolve their differences about the border dispute, which had led to a freeze in relations in 2020. The disputes revolve around three points in their vast border in Indias northern Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh regions as well as near Bhutan.Putin, who arrived Sunday in China, will also attend a major military parade in Beijing on Wednesday for the 80th anniversary of Japans World War II surrender. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who is not attending the SCO summit, will be present for the military parade, along with Myanmars junta chief Min Au Hlaing.Putin spoke to Xi on Sunday, ahead of the bilateral talks the two were scheduled to hold Tuesday, where he updated him about the Russia-U.S. talks on the Ukraine war in Alaska last month. I would like to note that the understandings reached at the recent high-level Russian-American summit in Alaska are also, I hope, moving in this direction, opening the way to peace in Ukraine, Putin said.Development has been a large part of the messaging in recent days. Putin said Russia and China were jointly against discriminatory sanctions that hurt the socioeconomic development of the world at large in a written interview released by the Chinese official news agency Xinhua on Saturday. He said Russia, alongside its Chinese partners, supports the reform of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. It is essential to end the use of finance as an instrument of neo-colonialism, which runs counter to the interests of the Global Majority, he said. Security is still keyWhile China is eager for the SCO to take a growing role on the global stage, it remains to be seen how effective the organization will be. Its focus in the past has always been on propping up the security initiatives of its member states, including China which said the SCO was effective in combating what it refers to as the three forces: terrorism, separatism and extremism. Those threats are what Beijing cited after it swept more than 1 million Uyghurs, Kazakhs and members of other largely Muslim minorities into camps, prisons, and other detention facilities in 2018. Their anti-terrorism exercises are more about countering threats to authoritarian regimes rather than countering terrorism in its own right, said Derek Grossman, a professor of international relations at the University of Southern California.Theres competing organizations, said Grossman. If anything, BRICS might have much more luck in competing against the West because there are major economies involved. Even if the SCO summits reach and influence is ultimately limited, one thing is clear, he said: China is on a diplomatic uptick and the U.S. is self destructing.____AP researcher Shihuan Chen in Beijing and AP writer Kanis Leung in Hong Kong contributed to this report. Weapons regains the top spot as the summer box office winds down
This image released by Warner Bros. Pictures shows promotional art for the film "Weapons." (Warner Bros. Pictures via AP)2025-08-31T17:49:10Z LOS ANGELES (AP) Weapons found its way back on top during the Labor Day weekend, culminating a summer box office thats likely to fall right below meeting last years earnings. Zach Creggers horror proved its staying power as a late-summer viral success and regained the top spot after last weekend saw Kpop Demon Hunters give Netflix its first box-office win. Weapons generated $10.2 million during its fourth weekend in theaters. Universals 50th rerelease of Jaws also made a splash in theaters, securing the second spot. Steven Spielbergs 1975 film took a bite out of the box office, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore, earning $8.1 million in 3,200 North American theaters. How appropriate that a movie thats celebrating its 50 years, an all-time classic, Jaws, should be as relevant today as it was when it opened, Dergarabedian said. Its so great because we need every dollar to contribute to the bottom line for this summer. The rerelease helped boost a summer with earnings likely coming in at $3.7 billion, just under last summer. Still, this year will miss the typical pre-pandemic summer box office benchmark of $4 billion, Dergarabedian said. There were casualties this summer. Its a very crowded summer, very competitive, Dergarabedian said. At the end of the day, you cant get to that four billion mark unless every movie just clicked and is performing at or above expectations. This summers earnings were front-loaded, with May releases like Thunderbolts and Lilo & Stitch becoming box office wins. However, the latter half of the summer struggled despite the success of movies like Weapons.Dergarabedian said the summer succeeded in provided high-quality movies and marketing, but its kind of limping a bit to the finish line in terms of the summer movie season. The crime caper Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler, generated $7.8 million domestically and snatched third place its debut weekend. Set in 1998 and directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film follows Butler as a New York City bartender who is unexpectedly wrapped up the citys crime world. Freakier Friday, which debuted alongside Weapons early this month for a successful humor/horror double feature, took fourth place, earning $6.5 million domestically. The Roses, another newcomer, came in fifth with $6.4 million. The Fantastic Four: First Steps landed in sixth place with $4.8 million. The Marvel superhero film hit box office gold during its late July entry, debuting at $118 million. The film, however, experienced a downward trend in earnings since its release. The Bad Guys 2" came in just below First Steps, with $4.7 million, followed by Superman, an early July entry that generated $2.6 million during the Labor Day weekend. Top 10 movies by domestic box officeWith final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:1. Weapons, $10.2 million.2. Jaws (1975), $8.1 million.3. Caught Stealing, $7.8 million.4. Freakier Friday, $6.5 million.5. The Roses, $6.4 million.6. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, $4.8 million.7. DHS Secretary Noem confirms more ICE resources are heading to Chicago for immigration crackdown
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem speaks during a television interview at the White House, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2025-08-31T16:51:59Z WASHINGTON (AP) Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Sunday said that the Trump administration will soon expand immigration operations in Chicago, confirming plans for a stepped up presence of federal agents in the nations third-largest city as President Donald Trump continues to lash out at Illinois Democratic leadership.Noems comments come after the DHS last week requested limited logistical support from officials at the Naval Station Great Lakes to support the agencys anticipated operations. The military installation is about 35 miles north of Chicago.Weve already had ongoing operations with ICE in Chicago... but we do intend to add more resources to those operations, Noem said during an appearance CBS News Face the Nation.Noem declined to provide further details about the planned surge of federal officers. It comes after the Trump administration deployed National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., to target crime, immigration and homelessness, and two months after it sent troops to Los Angeles. Trump lashed out against Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker in a social media posting Saturday, warning him that he must straighten out Chicagos crime problems quickly or were coming. The Republican president has also been critical of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. Johnson and Pritzker have pushed back against the expected federal mobilization, saying crime has fallen in Chicago. They are planning to sue if Trump moves forward with the plan. Johnson has already signed an order barring the Chicago Police Department from helping federal authorities with civil immigration enforcement or any related patrols, traffic stops and checkpoints during the surge.Chicago is home to a large immigrant population, and both the city and the state of Illinois have some of the countrys strongest rules against cooperating with federal government immigration enforcement efforts. That has often put the city and the state at odds with Trumps administration as it tries to carry out his mass deportation agenda. Pritzker in an interview aired Sunday on Face the Nation charged that Trumps expected plans to mobilize federal forces in the city may be part of a plan to stop the elections in 2026 or, frankly, take control of those elections.Noem said it was a Trump prerogative whether to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago as he did in Los Angeles in June in midst of immigration protests in the California city.I do know that LA wouldnt be standing today if President Trump hadnt taken action, Noem said. That city would have burned if left to devices of the mayor and governor of that state. AAMER MADHANI Madhani covers the White House for The Associated Press. Jude Law debuts portrayal of Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin at Venice Film Festival
This image shows Jude Law, as Vladimir Putin, left, and Paul Dano, as Vadim Baranov, in a scene from "The Wizard of the Kremlin." (Carole Bethel/Cinetic Media via AP)2025-08-31T04:42:02Z VENICE, Italy (AP) Jude Law transforms into Vladimir Putin for Olivier Assayas The Wizard of the Kremlin, which has its world premiere Sunday at the Venice Film Festival.Law said Sunday before the premiere that he didnt enter the project naively, and that he also does not fear repercussions for his portrayal. I felt safe in the hands of Olivier, Law said. This is a story that was going to be told intelligently with nuance and consideration. We werent looking for controversy for controversys sake. The film is an adaptation of Giuliano da Empolis bestselling book of the same name, an account of the Russian presidents rise to power alongside a fictional adviser called Vadim Baranov, who is played by Paul Dano. Its partially set in the early 1990s amid post-Soviet chaos and continues through 2014.Danos character was inspired by the real political strategist Vladislav Sourkov, who was considered the architect of the tightly controlled political system created under Putin. In 2013, he resigned his post of deputy prime minister. Much of the story is centered on Danos character, recounting his own rise in political maneuvering and the world he helped create. The wizard is the person who is in the background, so theres a casting of a spell that is happening, Dano said. The Wizard of the Kremlin is sure to provoke conversations as Russias three-year war in Ukraine continues. Efforts to stop the fighting with a ceasefire and end Europes biggest conflict since World War II through a comprehensive peace settlement have made no progress despite intense diplomatic maneuvering. The film is very much about how modern politics, 21st-century politics were invented, Assayas said. Whats going on right now is not only terrifying but its even more terrifying by the fact that we have not found the answer. The book was written before Russias full scale invasion of Ukraine, but da Empoli said that even if its about an earlier period, it was right. Its still relevant today, three years later, under different circumstances, da Empoli said. Winners will be announced on Sept. 6.The Wizard of the Kremlin does not yet have a release date in North America. Actor Jeffrey Wright, who plays the journalist Vadim Baranov is telling his story to, made a plea for why the film needs to be seen, especially in America.Even within the time frame of the original sins of Americawe had an idea that we could be better. This idea that we could aspire toward some sort of utopian perfectibility, Wright said. If that is lost, as it is now, than we become what we see in this film.___For more coverage of the 2025 Venice Film Festival, visit https://apnews.com/hub/venice-film-festival. A lot has happened since Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff last played each other at the US Open
Coco Gauff, right, of the United States, wipes away tears while talking to Naomi Osaka, of Japan, after Osaka defeated Gauff in the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019, in New York. (AP Photo/Adam Hunger, File)2025-08-31T13:19:56Z NEW YORK (AP) So much has happened for Naomi Osaka in tennis, away from tennis since she first played Coco Gauff at the U.S. Open back in 2019.Over that time, Osaka has won two Grand Slam trophies to raise her career total to four, helped spark a global conversation about mental health by revealing she felt anxiety and depression, taken a series of breaks from the tour and become a mother. The Gauff vs. Osaka matchup in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows on Monday serves as both a reminder to them, to others of that night six years ago, as well as all thats transpired since.Just to be at this point of my life and to be playing her again, Osaka said, is, honestly, for me ... kind of special.Osaka was 21 and the reigning champion at the U.S. Open and Australian Open; Gauff was 15 and playing in only her second Grand Slam tournament and first in New York. Osaka won in straight sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium, but what was most memorable was what happened after the last point. Gauff was crying, and Osaka walked over to console her and suggest that she address the crowd highly unusual for the loser of a match. But Osaka knew the fans would want to hear from the young American who already was showing signs of becoming the star she is today. I remember it was a tough moment for me, because it was a hyped-up match. I remember looking back at it. I guess I put way too much pressure on myself thinking I maybe had a chance in that moment to actually do something, which I definitely did, Gauff said Saturday, but I think it was just I felt more expectation that I should, than maybe belief. Osaka recalls recognizing how much talent and poise Gauff possessed for such a young player.I thought she just handled herself really well, said Osaka, who is seeded 23rd at Flushing Meadows and recently began working with Iga Swiateks former coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, and I knew she was going to be back there. After winning the U.S. Open again in 2020, Osaka triumphed at the Australian Open in January 2021. At the next Grand Slam tournament, she pulled out before her second-round match and explained the off-court struggles she had been dealing with, then took the first of a handful of mental health breaks. The Australian Open, 4 1/2 years ago, was the last major where Osaka made it to the fourth round until now. She was off the tour for part of that stretch while on maternity leave. On Saturday, she spoke about the journey getting back here. I just feel happy, said Osaka, 27, because I feel like all of my hard work is amounting to something.Gauff, now 21, won the U.S. Open in 2023 and the French Open this June and is seeded No. 3 in New York while working with a biomechanics expert to retool her problematic serve.Naomi and I, we arent super close or anything, but were definitely friendly with each other. I support her from afar in all the things that shes done on and off the court, Gauff said.It would be a cool kind of deja vu-type of situation, she said, guessing that this rematch will be in Ashe, too, but hopefully it will be a different result.___Howard Fendrich has been the APs tennis writer since 2002. Out Attorney General issues stark warning to cowardly hospital eliminating trans health care
Gay Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) has issued a warning to the University of Michigan after the schools medical center announced Monday it will no longer provide gender-affirming care to patients under 19 due to threats from the federal government. The announcement from the University of Michigan that they will no longer provide their transgender patients with all of the healthcare options available is shameful, dangerous, and potentially illegal, Nessel said in a statement. This cowardly acquiescence to political pressure from this president and his administration is not what patients have come to expect from an institution that has labeled itself, the leaders and the best, and my Department will be considering all of our options if they violate Michigan law. Related Puerto Ricos transition care ban is driving trans kids into exile State anti-discrimination law bans discrimination on the basis of gender identity. Nessel told health care providers that the availability of federal funding has no bearing on Michiganders right to seek and receive healthcare services without discrimination. Moreover, access to federal funds does not relieve Michigan healthcare facilities and providers of the obligation to comply with Michigan laws, she added. Please know that we are committed to working with our patients/clients to ensure appropriate, individualized care plans, it continued. We will offer to meet individually with impacted patients/clients to explore options for ongoing care. We understand how impactful this change is. If you are uncertain about how this change might impact you or your clients/patients, please discuss this with your supervisor. At least 21 hospitals and health systems have suspended or reduced health services for transgender minors and young adults in 2025, according to anNBC Newsanalysis. Manyproviders citedfears of federal investigations and the potential loss of government funding. In January, the presidentsigned an executive orderdirecting federal agencies to cut off funding for gender-affirming care for minors and instructing the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate and criminalize providers and health centers that offer such care. In April, Attorney GeneralPam Bondi orderedthe DOJ to investigate providers, hospitals, and clinics that provide gender-affirming care to trans youth. The crackdown escalated earlier this summer when federal prosecutorsissued subpoenasto more than 20 hospitals and clinics. In August, sixteen states and the District of Columbiafiled suitin an attempt to block the administrations investigations. However, several providers that received subpoenaschose to suspendoffering gender-affirming care instead of waiting for the outcome of the lawsuit.According to theNBC Newsreview, twelve hospitals have either stopped or announced plans to stop prescribing puberty blockers or hormone therapy to patients under 19, four hospitals have ended surgeries for minors, and one facility halted all gender-affirming care for trans youth under 18. At least six other university-affiliated health systems, includingStanford Medicine,University of Pittsburgh Medical Center(UPMC),University of Chicago(UChicago Medicine),University of Pennsylvania,Rush University Medical Center, andYale New Haven Hospital, have ceased offering some or all trans-related health services. An additional five hospitals havescrubbed their websitesof pages advertising transgender services for minors.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Straight people think religion is a good force in society. Queer people see through that.
New numbers released by the Pew Research Center show that LGBTQ+ people are a lot less likely to be religious than their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts. While this statement is unlikely to shock many readers, the gap between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ people in terms of religiosity is rather large.About 73% of non-LGBTQ+ people identify with a religion, but fewer than half (48%) of LGBTQ+ people said the same. Non-LGBTQ+ people were over twice as likely to say that religion is very important in their lives than LGBTQ+ people (42% vs. 17%). Non-LGBTQ+ people were twice as likely than LGBTQ+ people to attend religious services at least monthly (31% vs. 16%) and to pray daily (46% vs. 23%). Related Conservative Christians are driving more Americans away from religion altogether | Pew Research CenterThe results were taken from a poll of the Pew Research Centers American Trends Panel. The poll was conducted in July and August 2024, and included 751 LGBTQ+ U.S. adults. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Pew also looked at the results it got from its 2023-2024 Religious Landscape Study, which involved 2,402 gay and bisexual respondents. (The survey didnt ask about transgender identity.). Both data sets showed some results that could explain why queer people are less religious. They found that LGB people were a lot more likely (46%) to believe that religion does more harm than good than straight people were to believe the same thing (17%). | Pew Research CenterLGB people were more likely to believe that religious institutions are too concerned with money and power, too focused on rules, and too involved in politics. They were less likely to agree that religious institutions have positive outcomes, and the biggest difference came to protecting and strengthening morality in society. Only 35% of LGB people agreed that religious institutions do that, but two-thirds (67%) of straight people agreed with that statement. This makes sense considering that many churches preach that being queer or trans is inherently immoral, which is at odds with the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people, who generally see their identities as facts of life without a moral dimension. | Pew Research Center Pew also found that LGB people were less likely to hold a wide range of religious beliefs. LGB people were somewhat less likely to believe in a soul or to say they thought about God and religion. But they were about 20 percentage points less likely than non-LGB people to say they believed in God or a universal spirit (85% vs. 64%) and nearly 30 percentage points less likely to say they believed in an afterlife that could involve heaven, hell, or both (72% vs. 46%).LGB people were also less likely to practice spirituality at least once a week in a wide range of ways, including feeling a strong sense of gratitude and thankfulness and feeling the presence of something from beyond this world. LGB people were more likely to say they did yoga or visited something in nature for spiritual reasons. | Pew Research Center Pew notes that LGBTQ+ people tend to be much younger than the population as a whole, which could explain part of the results, since younger people also tend to be less religious. But even controlling for age, gender, politics, education, income, race, and ethnicity, LGBTQ+ people were still found to be less religious than non-LGBTQ+ people. A survey by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) last year found that about a quarter of Americans now identify as religiously unaffiliated and that LGBTQ+ people were more likely to have left their religions, even citing reasons not related to their identities, like sex abuse scandals and mental health.Religions negative teaching about LGBTQ people are driving younger Americans to leave church, PRRI executive director Melissa Deckman said at the time. We found that about 60% of Americans who are under the age of 30 who have left religion say they left because of their religious traditions teaching, which is a much higher rate than for older Americans.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Republicans are attacking symbolic speech because they know its an effective tool of protest
This week, Donald Trump released yet another executive order, this time aimed at prosecuting the burning of the American flag. The Republicans want to play this off as a patriotic act, and the order claims it preserves our rights, liberty, and security. But this is all about limiting ways to express discontent with this administration. This is the latest move in a two-pronged strategy against symbols and symbolic speech. While the flag-burning executive order works to criminalize a symbol of discontent with those in power, the federal government is also attacking street art symbolism that helps to show support for marginalized groups that the administration wishes to target. Related Texas Republicans perfectly represent the death of the Republican Party It is important to note that the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that burning the flag is a protected form of free speech. While many hold the flag as a near-sacred symbol, the ability to protest through its visible destruction is a powerful statement that is built into one of the most basic tenets of this country.Trump and his team are well aware of this and they want to dissemble around that point in the executive order, suggesting that flag burning is used to incite lawlessness, an idea hoping to bundle it in with shouting fire in a crowded theater. They clearly know that this argument has no teeth, as the order doesnt ask the Department of Justice to arrest people for flag burning, but rather to see what local laws might be used to target them instead, such as violating burning restrictions. This is all a weak attempt to hide behind patriotism while criminalizing an aspect of protest that the Founding Fathers would support. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today All of that is well illustrated in the actions of the combat veteran who burned a flag outside the White House the day after the order was released. As he pointed out, he fought for every one of your rights but was protesting the impingement of the First Amendment. If anyone has more right than someone else to burn a flag, it is likely to be the person who was willing to give their life for what it represents. He was arrested (and later released) for igniting a fire.People can get very sensitive about the flag, and it is crucial to understand that the flag really isnt the point here. If Trump and his team were worried about the sacred defense of the flag, then they would be looking at any number of commercial violations of the Flag Code, such as it being printed on paper napkins and bikinis and flown in disrepair. Were at a point where Vermin Supreme is making more sense than the president. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vermin Supreme (@verminsupremeofficial) This order will be used as a way to attack and incarcerate protestors who are exercising their First Amendment rights to voice displeasure with the government. When an administration has to resort to attacking protestors and refusing to let people speak, rather than seeking to address problems and listening to the will of the people, it is fair to say that they have failed in their duties. But the thought policing by Republicans goes further than trying to prevent people from speaking against them. They also want to stop people from supporting those whom they wish to attack. At the start of July, the Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told governors of all 50 states that they had to remove from crosswalks political messages of any nature, artwork, or anything else that detracts from the core mission of driver and pedestrian safety.Increasing road safety is a laudable goal, but Duffys order had nothing to do with that (his own tweets make that plain). In fact, data from multiple studies suggests that unusual crosswalks that are themed, contain messaging, or include artwork may well reduce accident rates. Its theorized that, as drivers notice the crosswalks for being different, they are paying more attention to other cars and pedestrians in the area rather than being zoned out and thinking about their day. This is all to do with that political messages part of the order, and its pretty clear which political messages theyre targeting. If you think about road artwork you may have seen in your neighborhoods, its probably mostly Pride flags, rainbows, and BLM messages, and not so much in the way of Confederate flags and white supremacist messages. As we approach the deadline for governors to comply with the order, most states have refused to comply. But, of course, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has been happy to step up and perform his role as Trumps loyal toady in the most abhorrent way possible. Last week, during the night, the rainbow crosswalk outside the site of the Pulse nightclub mass shooting was painted over.In response to the detestable act of painting over a memorial like this one, the local community came out in protest and re-chalked the rainbow on the crosswalk. That could have been the end of it, but instead, police were deployed to stare at the patch of road that had once been a memorial to victims of a mass shooting to ensure that no one dared to restore that memorial again. If your administration has to deploy armed guards to prevent peaceful support for victims from a marginalized community, they have failed in their duties. How is any of this in line with the basic concepts of free speech? We can hope that the backlash will prevent further actions or compliance from other state governors, but if not, we can safely assume that Black Lives Matter street art will be next on the chopping block. Trump has been pulling moves from the authoritarian playbook for a long time now, whether thats plastering his face on a building, demanding a sad military parade for his birthday, or deploying the national guard in an unnecessary show of force. Its exhausting to keep track of all of the steps towards fascism that we are taking as a country, but every one of them needs to be remembered and fought back against. This isnt about road safety or respect for the flag or the country. Its about attacking symbolic speech so that there is less space for dissent from what Trump and his cronies would like people to believe. Like so much of the anti-DEI push and the censorship of books and schools, this is another nail in the coffin of the ability for people to speak their minds. The message is clear. Dont protest the government. Dont support the queers. Just bow to the supreme leader.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Activist warns that the rise of Gavin Newsom is an ominous sign for trans people
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has been the talk of the town recently. His social media trolling of Donald Trump has captured national attention and has skyrocketed his popularity among Democrats both in his home state and around the country. With many wondering if this social media strategy could catapult him into the next presidential race, journalist and activist Erin Reed made it clear that many trans people are less than thrilled by the possibility. Related Analyst shocked by voter response to Gavin Newsoms Trump trolling: My goodness gracious Newsom inspires discomfort at best and outright hostility at worst, Reed wrote. Their reaction is telling. In recent years, trans people have learned how quickly politicians can turn on them, and many see Newsoms brand of politics as a flashing warning sign.Reed acknowledged that Newsoms trolling tactics have indeed been effective. Hes gaining followers, driving news cycles, and picking fights where he knows he can land punches, she said. Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today On substance, hes also taking steps Democrats should applaudleaning hard into Californias redistricting fight after Texass mid-cycle power grab, and pressingCalifornia universities not to caveto Trump administration demands for monetary payments to the government and policy changes, including those for transgender people. These moves are good, or at the very least, refreshing. But she also reminded her readers that Newsom has made it clear he believes trans people can be sacrificed to win over moderate voters. She mentioned the fact that in March, aides in his office were busted trying to discourage Democratic lawmakers from introducing any pro-LGBTQ+ legislation. There was also the appearance of right-wing extremist Charlie Kirk on Newsoms new podcast. In the episode, Newsom ceded to aligning with Kirks views on transgender athletes in womens sports, claiming that trans women and girls participating in sports matching their gender identity is deeply unfair.Newsom also joined Kirk in targeting transgender incarcerated people and agreed that society must be more sensitized to what Kirk called the butchery of transgender youthright-wing shorthand for gender-affirming care, Reed explained. She also brought up his appearance on the far-right podcast, the Shawn Ryan Show, where he expressed skepticism about allowing trans young people to transition before age 26 and said he is still trying to understand as much as anyone else the whole pronoun thing. Newsom is following a pipeline transgender people have seen time and again, Reed wrote. Transphobia rarely stays confined to one small corner; its almost never just a one-off statement. Those who embrace it even slightly almost always end up sliding further into opposition to nearly every facet of transgender existence. She pointed out that weve seen many people become radicalized before our eyes, like JK Rowling and Elon Musk. Its a pattern so well known that even anti-trans activists acknowledge it, Reed said, quoting Terry Schilling of the Republican American Principles Project, who said, The womens sports issue was really the beginning point in helping expose all this because what it did was, it got opponents of the LGBT movement comfortable with talking about transgender issues.Reed said she knows the counterargument to all of this is that Trump is worse, but she thinks there is more nuance to it than that. Right now, the community has one thing going for it: one major political party still passes protective legislation and has not joined the litany of anti-trans policies escalating in red states. If that fragile dichotomy collapsesif Democrats too decide that transgender people can be sacrificed for political gainthe result will not be a lesser evil. It will be a political consensus that our rights are gone, and that outcome could be even worse.Transphobia inside the party is not a treatable wound inflicted by the far rightit is a malignancy, slow-moving but devastating, one that threatens to hollow out decades of progress from within, she added. If it spreads unchecked, it could mark the end of so much our community has fought to preserve.Reed said that for many trans people, Newsoms rise provokes as much fear as the Republican party itself because in a political environment where both left and right agree that your existence is negotiable, there is no one left to fight for you.It is untenableand if such sentiment takes root inside the Democratic Party, it could take generations for transgender Americans to claw back even the most basic of rights.Subscribe to theLGBTQ Nation newsletterand be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
