SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIPL 2026: With bizarre dismissal, Sai Sudharsan scripts unwanted IPL record, becomes first ever to...NEW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bengaluru crushed Gujarat Titans by 92 runs in IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 and booked their place in a second straight IPL final. But one of the biggest talking points of the match was Sai Sudharsan’s strange dismissal, which also created an unwanted IPL record.Sudharsan got out in bizarre fashion during the chase. While trying to play a shot off Jacob Duffy, his bat slipped out of his hands, hit the ground and then crashed into the stumps. He was ruled hit wicket and became the first player in IPL history to be dismissed this way twice. The opener managed only 14 runs before walking back stunned.Batting first, RCB posted a massive 254/5 thanks to captain Rajat Patidar’s explosive unbeaten 93 off just 33 balls. After surviving two dropped catches, Patidar completely changed the game with nine sixes and five fours. RCB smashed 114 runs in the last six overs, leaving Gujarat bowlers helpless.Virat Kohli added a quick 43 while Devdutt Padikkal scored 30 to give RCB a strong start. Later, Patidar and Krunal Pandya stitched together a rapid partnership that pushed the score beyond 250.Chasing such a huge total, Gujarat needed a fast start but quickly fell apart. Soon after Sudharsan’s unusual dismissal, captain Shubman Gill was bowled for just two by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Jos Buttler also failed to make an impact as wickets kept tumbling. At one stage, GT were struggling at 51/5 and never really recovered. Rahul Tewatia fought with a 68-run knock, but the target was too big. Gujarat were eventually bowled out for 162. 131342675With this win, RCB entered their fifth IPL final, while Gujarat Titans will get one more chance to qualify when they play the winner of the Eliminator.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNoni Madueke opens up on relationship with Arsenal and England rival Bukayo Saka before Champions League finalNoni Madueke is not quite Mikel Arteta’s super-sub. Gabriel Martinelli has made the most appearances from the bench this season (27), while Max Dowman and Gabriel Jesus have been used almost exclusively as substitutes. But if Arsenal need a goal in the latter stages of Saturday’s Champions League final against PSG, there’s a very good chance Arteta will send for Madueke. It has been a strange season for Madueke, whose involvement has tended to go hand in hand with Bukayo Saka’s fitness. They have occasionally played together, with Madueke on the left or Saka trialled through the centre. But typically it has been one or the other. Madueke averages 53 minutes per appearance in a role which has been more understudy than competitor, despite Saka’s occasional struggles for form.It is a dynamic that is likely to continue beyond the Champions League final into the summer, when Saka is expected to be Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice right winger at the World Cup. This despite Madueke’s starring role in England’s best game under Tuchel, the 5-0 win over Serbia in September. “It’s been different for sure,” Madueke says. “But B is a top player. We kind of fight on all fronts – same for England, same for Arsenal. But it’s been good. We know that we’re pulling in the same direction.”Arsenal ended the Premier League season with victory at Crystal Palace (John Walton/PA) (PA Wire)Tuchel often talks about having a variety of “profiles” to choose from and in Madueke, both he and Arteta have an alternative to Saka – someone fast and direct who will drive towards the byline over and over again. “It’s amazing to have two high-level players, but completely different,” Madueke says. “There’s definitely parts of his game I try and implement into mine, he probably says the same. We’re so close off the pitch.”One natural consequence of modern football’s characteristics – the hard running and intense pressing, the five substitutions and the increasingly elongated stoppage time – is that the game has split in to two phases: the first hour when the two first XIs battle, which has become increasingly tactical and stilted; and the last half an hour or so, when the “finishers” enter the field and half the outfield players change. This game tends to be more spontaneous, and it is a situation for someone like Madueke to thrive. It is a role, dovetailing with Saka, that he may have to get comfortable with. “I know I want to be here, I know he wants to be here, so it looks like that’s going to be our gig for the foreseeable.”Madueke, centre, picture with Bukayo Saka, second right (Getty)Madueke played a central part in Arsenal’s Premier League celebrations, taking responsibility for being MC and “rapping the whole night”, according to an Arsenal fan who paid a small fortune to get inside the exclusive Tape nightclub in Mayfair where the players partied that night. Even Arteta let his hair down, show his “fun side,” Madueke smiles. “Not that I haven’t seen it before. He can be really fun. Yes, he’s very intense, but he’s a good guy, a great guy.”Has Arteta’s coaching surprised Madueke? “No, I knew from the first conversation I had with him I knew what type of manager he was. Someone very humble, very hard working, very intense in a positive way. So I wasn’t surprised by him.“He just helped me to be diligent, he’s helped me to really care about little details that count a lot towards winning games and fighting for major trophies.”Madueke has played his part in Arsenal’s Champions League success this season, scoring his first Gunners goal in the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich which effectively booked their place in the knockout rounds.Noni Madueke scored in the impressive win against Bayern Munich (John Walton/PA) (PA Wire)There is only one game left and the task now is to find the right balance ahead of the meeting with PSG in Budapest, to sense the occasion. More history can be made. After winning the Premier League, is the pressure off? “No, it’s separate,” says Madueke. “The pressure of the Champions League is there, but pressure is with us all the time. This is Arsenal Football Club, one of the biggest teams in England.“It’s definitely better that we won the Premier League, for sure, before we go into the Champions League final. I just don’t know if we will be thinking about that. We will be thinking about getting another one. I think the Premier League will be irrelevant on the night. It will be full focus on the Champions League, just giving our all and trying to make sure we bring that to the final.”0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCrystal Palace’s day of destiny arrives with a sombre note after unconventional pathAs Oliver Glasner bade farewell to Selhurst Park on Sunday, Crystal Palace chair Steve Parish paid tribute on behalf of his fellow fans. “You gave us one of the best days of our lives,” he said, citing last year’s FA Cup final. Only one of the best? Perhaps Parish had exercised a little caution because he felt something still better was yet to come.Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were beaten at Wembley last May; the champions Liverpool at the national stadium in August’s Community Shield. Glasner’s third and last final comes against a Rayo Vallecano team who finished eighth in LaLiga. But there is a case for arguing victory in Leipzig on Wednesday would be the best of all, not just the completion of a reign but the culmination. For clubs such as Palace, strangers to continental competition, Europe can feel mythical, something only experienced by others. A brief foray into the 1998 Intertoto Cup aside, they had never ventured abroad for meaningful matches. Now Palace stand on the brink of a European trophy; even benefiting from Premier League revenues and starting the Conference League as the competition favourites, it will be a seismic achievement.Oliver Glasner led Palace to their greatest day in the FA Cup final last year (Nick Potts/PA Wire) And one that underlines the reality the departing Glasner is a history-maker. Not since the Habsburg emperors has an Austrian achieved more at a Palace. They had not won a major trophy in the 120 years of their existence. Now they could get three in 13 months. Only one Austrian manager had ever won a European competition – the great Ernst Happel, the first coach to lift the European Cup with two clubs and reach the final with three – but now he could have company. Glasner, too, is showing his expertise in different environments. He is one game away from a personal double. Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2021-22 Europa League glory can look the greater feat, given the competition; after all, they knocked out Barcelona in the quarter-finals, winning in Camp Nou. It wasn’t Eintracht’s first continental silverware – there was the 1980 Uefa Cup – but it was another indication of Glasner having a transformative impact at a club who rarely won much. There is other evidence he is the exception, not the norm: on Monday, Wolfsburg were relegated from the Bundesliga. Five years ago, Glasner steered them into the Champions League. His career path is to stay for a good time, not a long time. When his Palace contract expires, it will be a fond farewell, not the fractious one that seemed on the cards in January. Glasner’s unhappiness at his captain Marc Guehi’s sale left him to say he felt “abandoned”. Yet there was a mutual interest in patching up relations. And certainly Palace have taken an unconventional road to this point. Their demotion to the Conference League was part of John Textor’s legacy, the former co-owner’s involvement in Lyon being deemed a breach of Uefa’s multi-club ownership rules. Yet it put Palace into a more winnable competition; though it may not have looked that way when they stumbled in the league phase, losing to AEK Larnaca and Strasbourg. Include an FA Cup defeat to non-league Macclesfield in Palace’s troubled January and this had threatened to be an unhappy ending. Palace supporters’ anger at the Austrian’s comments led to a banner: “Fans disrespected – Glasner finished.” Except he wasn’t. To his irritation, Palace sold and did not replace Guehi but Jaydee Canvot has stepped up. Jean-Philippe Mateta, who almost joined AC Milan as it seemed that, along with Guehi and Eberechi Eze going, Palace would be punished for building too good a team, instead stayed. Ismaila Sarr, an inspired choice as a replacement for Michael Olise, struck in both legs of both the quarter-final and the semi-final; should Palace lift the trophy, the Senegalese will surely be named the player of the competition.Ismaila Sarr has been the inspiration for Palace on their travels around Europe (Getty) And, Macclesfield apart, Glasner has shown he knows how to plot his way through a knockout competition. He has done it, typically, with a small core. This is Palace’s 60th game of the season. Maxence Lacroix has started 54. Four players are past 4,000 minutes, six more past 3,000. There are questions if Glasner’s reluctance to rotate would equip him for life at a superpower; or if his 3-4-3 would, with Palace having a relatively low share of the ball – 45.9 per cent in the Premier League, still only 52.9 in the Conference League – but his players are expertly drilled. They know the system. Some of Glasner’s finest triumphs have come as underdog and on the counter-attack. A personal spikiness with his bosses may alienate some potential employers, too, but the last few years suggest he is one of the finest managers in the European game now, an impression that will be underlined if Palace claim the Conference League. After all, only three managers have won two major European trophies in the 2020s: Carlo Ancelotti, Unai Emery and Jose Luis Mendilibar. Even adding in those who have done so since 2010 only brings in Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane. In the Palace pantheon, meanwhile, top spot belongs to Steve Coppell, for his four spells, two promotions, third-place finish in the old Division 1 and feat of taking the Eagles to their first FA Cup final. But silverware had eluded him, and every Palace manager. Until Glasner came in. He has two medals already. Now for the hat-trick, and to sign off in style.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBenjamin Sesko: Man United star builds perfect strikerBenjamin Sesko: Man United star builds perfect strikerManchester United forward Benjamin Sesko has enjoyed a strong first season in England.SeasonThe Slovenian joined last summer from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £66.3 million. He started slowly, scoring just two goals before Christmas, but came to life in 2026, finishing the season with 12 goals in all competitions. This is even more impressive as, under Michael Carrick, he has often been used as a bench striker but went on a run of scoring crucial goals to earn valuable points. This included a run of nine goals in 14 matches before he picked up an injury against Liverpool and subsequently missed the last three matches of the season.Sesko’s Slovenia did not qualify for the World Cup, so he will now enjoy a summer break and be back nice and early for pre-season to try and consolidate his place in United’s first eleven from the very start of next season.Perfect strikerIn an interview with GIVEMESPORT, he was asked to create his perfect Manchester United striker. When asked about right-footed ability, he chose Cristiano Ronaldo, and then when he had to choose a left-footer, he went for Robin van Persie. Two excellent finishers who were crucial in different league-winning campaigns.Sesko was then asked about which striker he would choose to copy for their finishing level; it would be the one and only Ruud van Nistelrooy, who smashed in 150 goals for the club in just five seasons. The Slovenian then selected Dimitar Berbatov as the player with the silkiest skills and decided his perfect United striker would possess the Bulgarian’s first touch. Finally, when asked to choose for pace, he went for United’s all-time leading goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, and when it came to strength, he looked no further than the magical Zlatan Ibrahimovic.Interestingly, when asked to choose a celebration, he selected his own “Air Sesko” celebration, where he shows off his impressive leap.Benjamin Sesko season statsSource: transfermarkt.comFeatured image by Michael Regan/Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWe need complete reset, says Tottenham chiefVinai Venkatesham joined Tottenham in the summer of 2025 [Getty Images]Vinai Venkatesham was upbeat when he began his new job as Tottenham Hotspur chief executive last summer. His outlook quickly changed. To say the his first season in charge did not go to plan would be an understatement. And in a wide-ranging interview with BBC Sport, Venkatesham has spoken about:Why the club needs a "reset"Why they kept Thomas Frank for as long as they didThe wrong call in appointing Igor TudorThe personal abuse he has faced from supportersRoberto de Zerbi's "extraordinary" impactThe club's recruitment plans Speaking after a final-day victory over Everton clinched Tottenham's Premier League survival, Venkatesham discussed the emotional strains of a relegation battle that went to the season's closing minutes."I think it was just a huge outpouring of relief," said Venkatesham, who said that the club would not have made anyone redundant in the event of relegation. "But obviously feeling relief at the end of the season is nowhere near the standard of the football club."Venkatesham's first words were praise for the supporters who he says got the team "over the line" in their relegation battle. But he knows he will need more than words to appease supporters who have turned on him this season.Spurs admit 'football success was not driving decisions''Spurs avoid humiliation but elation of fans will soon turn to anger''I don't think there was a relentless obsession with football success'When Venkatesham started work on 1 June last year, he had high hopes."On my very first day, what I thought would be a realistic target for the men's first team would be competing for European places," he said.Even though Tottenham had just finished 17th under Ange Postecoglou, they had won the Europa League, their first trophy since 2008, while the squad was packed with seasoned internationals. But reality quickly struck."If you'd have asked me a few months after I joined, when I was no longer an outsider, I would have told you the club was in a significantly worse state in some places than I thought," said Venkatesham."That is absolutely not meant to be a criticism of anyone or anything. It was just what I found. It was very clear that this wasn't some form of turnaround that was required of the club in quite a few areas. It was really a complete reset."Asked to expand on that, Venkatesham said: "If I had to generalise, I would say on the non-football side of the club, in particular around stadium operations and commercial, that the club was and is really strong."I think if you look at the football side of the club, over a timeframe of five years or so, there has just been an explosion in progress across the Premier League."I'm not saying that Tottenham didn't improve in that period. But what I can tell you is that when you look at where Tottenham were in many of those areas, compared to where I believe other Premier League clubs are, there was a significant gap. In some areas really quite worryingly so."I don't think that there was what I would call a relentless obsession with football success."Our training centre is amazing, one of the best, if not the best in the world. But when you look around, it looks more like a five-star hotel than it does a performance environment. That will change over the summer."I think there are many areas where the club hasn't got the right level of expertise."'Tudor a risk that didn't work out'Igor Tudor was sacked as Tottenham interim head coach after 44 days and seven matches. [Getty Images]It means nothing now, but Frank's ill-fated reign started quite well following his appointment last June. Tottenham lost just one of their opening 10 matches of the season in all competitions. But when Tottenham finally sacked Frank in February, the only surprise was that it didn't happen sooner.Indeed, Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange faced heavy criticism from fans for prolonging Frank's tenure for as long as they did."There's been plenty of coverage that the club was passive during this period. And that's absolutely not true," insisted Venkatesham. In weighing up Frank's future, Venkatesham says the club considered results, the probability of the Dane turning their failing season around, concerns changing managers may create in the January transfer window, the fixture calendar and concerns over entering the interim head coach market.Venkatesham confirmed to BBC Sport that Tottenham tried to entice De Zerbi, who was leaving Marseille, to become the club's full-time head coach after Frank was dismissed. The Italian, however, was originally unwilling to take the job mid-season, which led Spurs towards making the left-field appointment of Tudor – who left Spurs by mutual consent after just seven games."Obviously, we were very disappointed when it became clear that we wouldn't be appointing Roberto on a permanent basis [in February]," said Venkatesham."We were then, in the interim market, which is generally not the not the broadest. There was a number of reasons why Igor was selected: he had managed in very high-profile and high-pressure environments - we didn't want somebody that was going to wilt under that pressure."He has a history of making an immediate impact. He has managed in big clubs. He has quite a different personality to Thomas and we felt like something different was needed."But of course we were really aware he had no Premier League experience. Was it a risk in appointing him? Absolutely."Asked if he would accept the Tudor appointment was a mistake, Venkatesham responded: "It didn't work out. I think it's very clear it didn't work out. And I don't think that is in question. I don't think anybody would argue anything else."'I understand the supporters' frustration'Former executive chairman Daniel Levy, who left Tottenham in September after 25 years, was generally the target of supporters ire during his long reign. But since Levy's exit, Venkatesham has attracted increasing anger from irate sections of the fanbase.Asked if the abuse from supporters has forced him to consider his own role at the club, Venkatesham said: "I understand the frustration around supporters. I think Tottenham supporters have been frustrated for some time. This is two 17th-place finishes in a row."It's clearly not good enough. I think that is rational, normal, sensible, and, is what we would expect from supporters."The club had some serious challenges that it needs to address on the football side. We know what those are. We are addressing them. We are fixing them. Those challenges have not disappeared overnight."They built up over many years. I wish I could wave my magic wand and fix them overnight, but that is not possible. It takes some time to fix those issues."So I have complete confidence in what we're doing, how we're doing it. But supporters are rightly impatient. So I have to weather that storm."On dealing with intense criticism from fans, Venkatesham - who previously worked for Arsenal - added: "It's not easy. You have to develop a thick skin."I'm helped by the fact that I've been in football for a while, for the last 15 years, so it's not new to me."It's a game of opinions, and I have absolutely no problem with being criticised. I've got no problem what anyone in the game being criticised, it's just part of the job."The challenge in football is that that criticism frequently goes way past the line for players, referees, executives."De Zerbi's 'extraordinary impact'Roberto de Zerbi has picked up 11 points from his seven games in charge [Getty Images]Speak to those behind the scenes at Tottenham, they will tell you that De Zerbi's impact has been profound. Not only in picking up 11 points from seven games to preserve the club's top-flight status, but his growing influence is instilling belief in the squad."I think he has made an extraordinary impact so far," Venkatesham said."We have to recognize that it's early days, and we also need to recognize that he's come into a very specific situation."It is hard to underestimate the scale of the challenge he walked into. And it's hard to describe what a significant impact he has had in the dressing room with all the players."I think he's an excellent coach, and we think that he plays the style of football that our supporters and the broader football public want to see."De Zerbi is expected to have full involvement in the club's recruitment this summer.Tottenham have held talks with Borussia Dortmund's departed sporting director Sebastian Kehl, while Venkatesham confirmed the club have raised their wage ceiling in the hope of attracting top-quality players."The squad needs work and the squad hasn't got the right balance," he said. "We need experience and leadership and also that kind of physical robustness to play in the most demanding league that exists. "We need to strengthen the club over multiple transfer windows but this transfer window, in particular, is going to be critical."Latest Tottenham news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Tottenham - what do you want to know?0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGasperini contacts Mason GreenwoodGasperini contacts Mason GreenwoodMason Greenwood is the dream of Gian Piero Gasperini’s new Roma. And this time, the Giallorossi coach has taken action himself. According to the latest rumors, the Piedmontese coach, who left for Turin yesterday, has made direct contact to try to convince the English striker to join the Giallorossi project, obtaining an initial opening from the player. This is reported in today’s edition of Leggo. He is the first name identified by Gasperini to build a Champions League-caliber attack. An attacking unit that the coach wants to revolutionize and finally bring to life his footballing vision after a season often characterized by emergencies up front, due to injuries and a shortened squad. Greenwood, thanks to his technical skills, speed, one-on-one ability, and finishing ability, is considered the perfect candidate to lead the new Roma attack alongside Malen. The English striker, coming off a very positive season at Marseille, could leave the French club in the coming weeks, partly due to financial concerns related to their failure to qualify for the Champions League, but the Roman club will require a record investment. And Roma’s return to top-flight Europe has been crucial in truly reopening the door.Naturally, the operation remains complex, especially financially, but in Trigoria, there’s a sense that this time the club is ready to make a significant effort to bring the coach a top-notch signing. This is also because the message the club sent after finishing third is clear: to definitively raise the level of the squad.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOhtani, Hernández injuries cloud Dodgers' blowout winLos Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17) reacts after being hit by pitch from Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland (21) during the fourth inning at Dodger Stadium. LOS ANGELES — Another dominant performance by the Dodgers’ offense at Dodger Stadium turned tense in a hurry. On a night that began with towering home runs, a great Dodger debut from Eric Lauer and another lopsided Dodgers victory, concern quickly shifted toward Kiké Hernández and Shohei Ohtani after both left Tuesday night’s 15-6 win over the Rockies with injuries. The Dodgers improved to 35-20 with their 11th win in 13 games and secured another series victory over Colorado, but the clubhouse mood afterward centered around Hernández’s left oblique strain and Ohtani taking a pitch off his right pitching hand.Mexican Heritage Night at Chavez Ravine brought plenty of celebration. By the end of the night, however, the Dodgers were holding their breath.Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Enrique Hernandez (8) celebrates with Los Angeles Dodgers two-way player Shohei Ohtani (17) after hitting a solo home run during the third inning against the Colorado... Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn ImagesLos Angeles Dodgers first baseman Enrique Hernandez (8) celebrates with Los Angeles Dodgers two-way player Shohei Ohtani (17) after hitting a solo home run during the third inning against the Colorado...Hernández appeared headed for one of his best games of the season before exiting early. He went 2-for-2 with a solo homer in the third inning and a double in the fourth, though it became increasingly obvious something was wrong as he grimaced while running the bases. After the game, Hernández revealed he originally injured the oblique during batting practice Monday but attempted to play through it.“I did it during batting practice and I was pretty embarrassed that I did that,” Hernández said. “I didn't really tell anybody about it. I just thought it was a small tweak.”That optimism disappeared quickly Tuesday night.Hernández admitted his home run swing came with pain, and the discomfort worsened after his double in the fourth inning when he felt it both swinging and running. Sitting in the dugout beside Dave Roberts, Hernández already appeared to know the outcome.“I feel pretty defeated right now, and hopefully we get somewhat good news tomorrow,” Hernández said. The utilityman added he is hoping for a Grade 1 strain.“I’m hoping best-case scenario, it’s a Grade 1 and at least 2-3 weeks and I’m back,” Hernández said.Roberts confirmed Hernández is headed to the injured list, though the Dodgers do not yet know the severity of the injury.“It’s a bummer,” Roberts said. “Not a season-ending thing.”The Dodgers are already moving quickly to fill the roster spot, with Alex Freeland en route to Los Angeles. The timing is particularly brutal for Hernández, who battled through injuries last season and spent the offseason working his way back into form. Tuesday night looked like he was back with an offensive performance he was having then it abruptly ended. The other scare came in the fourth inning when Ohtani was hit by an 85 mph changeup on his right hand, the same hand he is scheduled to pitch with Wednesday.Fortunately for the Dodgers, it appeared the ball mostly struck the protective guard near Ohtani’s wrist and clipped his pinky rather than hitting flush on the hand.Dalton Rushing later pinch-hit for Ohtani as the Dodgers opted for caution in a game that was already well out of reach.Roberts said Ohtani will not require X-rays and is still expected to make his scheduled start Wednesday, though the Dodgers have not yet decided whether he will also serve as designated hitter.“Clipped his pinky,” Roberts said. “I haven’t decided if he’s gonna hit on Wednesday.”The injuries overshadowed what otherwise was another overwhelming offensive performance.Mookie Betts, dropped into the cleanup spot by Roberts, immediately responded with one of his best games of the season. Betts launched a two-run homer in the first inning off Rockies starter Kyle Freeland before adding another blast in the sixth inning for his 32nd career multi-homer game.Betts finished 3-for-5 with two home runs and continues to look increasingly comfortable in the four-hole. He now has four homers since being activated.Mookie Betts homers out of the cleanup spot in the @Dodgers order! pic.twitter.com/O2Yzjkbsr2— MLB (@MLB) May 27, 2026Andy Pages kept rolling as well. The breakout outfielder crushed his 12th homer of the season in the third inning before adding a two-run double in the fourth that scored Hernández and Ohtani.Pages now has 49 RBIs, tied for the MLB lead. Will Smith added another homer during the Dodgers’ six-run sixth inning while Miguel Rojas chipped in an RBI as Los Angeles crossed the 10-run mark for the 10th time this season.By night’s end, the Dodgers had piled up 17 hits and built a 15-1 lead before Colorado added late runs against Rojas, who pitched the ninth and allowed five runs on eight hits.Lost somewhat in the offensive explosion was an impressive Dodgers debut from Lauer.Recently acquired from the Blue Jays, the left-hander gave the Dodgers exactly what it needed, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out four. His lone mistake was a solo homer to Hunter Goodman in the second inning.Lauer’s final line: 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts on 96 pitches.“Yeah, it was fun,” Lauer said. “It was nice to get back out there and play some ball again. It’s always fun playing at Dodger Stadium, now I get to do it a lot more so I’m excited about that.”Lauer also praised his chemistry with catcher Will Smith.“I think it was good. I think me and Will work really well together,” Lauer said. “I have no complaints, just one not great pitch.”When asked what the outing might mean for his future role with the Dodgers, Lauer laughed off the question.“That’s a weird question,” Lauer said with a smile.“I think the goal for me is to put together a bunch of good outings. After that, we’ll see what the need is and where the need is, we’ll go based on that. My goal as far as I’m concerned is to go out there and have good outings.” Lauer said.Still, performances like Tuesday’s are exactly why the Dodgers brought him in.For now, though, the Dodgers leave Tuesday night with far bigger concerns than rotation depth. They have won four straight games and widened their NL West lead to 3½ games over the Padres. The offense is surging. The pitching staff continues finding answers. But as the Dodgers prepare to go for a sweep Wednesday night, all attention turns toward Hernández’s MRI results and ensuring Ohtani’s pitching hand is truly okay.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWho is Section V's all-time boys lacrosse player? VOTE in the poll sponsored by Faber BuildersWhether it's the long history with the high school game, numerous successes of local colleges, or the presence of a local professional team, the Rochester area has always had strong ties to lacrosse. And it's no secret that Section V is one of the top talent producers, not only in New York state, but the entire country. The United States' 250th anniversary has prompted our mission to find the top players across several high school sports, and boys lacrosse's time is here. We parsed through lists of All-Americans and All-Greater Rochester selections, and sought input from several local high school coaches in an attempt to answer this question: Who is the best boys lacrosse player in Section V history?Of course, there is no right answer. One historian's preference surely wouldn't match another's. In a sport that's evolved to such a drastic degree, how can one possibly compare excellence back in the heyday to now? Regardless, that's the task at hand. We've whittled our list down to 20 players, though many more could warrant consideration. See an obvious omission? Let us know.Drew Coholan, IrondequoitCoholan was named to three All-Greater Rochester teams and was a two-time All-American for the Eagles while flipping between attack and midfield. He played at Hofstra after high school. Jared Conners, PittsfordOne of the top defenders to step foot in Section V, Conners' resume includes two AGR picks, two All-American selections and was twice named Section V's top defenseman. At one point during his high school career, Conners was considered the No. 4 defenseman in the nation according to Inside Lacrosse. After his time at Pittsford, Conners competed at Virginia for five seasons and was a three-time All-American. In 2021 he led the nation in ground balls among non-FOGOs. Terry Corcoran, Corning EastBelieve it or not, Corning was a member of Section V from the mid-1960s through the early 1980s. The Corcoran family fingerprints are all over New York state's lacrosse history. Terry Corcoran, prior to numerous coaching stops in both high school and college including Aquinas and McQuaid, was a two-time All-American in high school. He later starred at Hobart, helping the Statesmen win two Division III national titles (which included an undefeated season in 1977). Thomas Gravino, VictorThe most recent Section V player on this list, Gravino is still competing collegiately at Maryland. The midfielder helped Victor reach the state final during his senior year in 2023, scoring 73 goals from the midfield position. He was named an All-American twice, and All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year his final varsity season. Dan Groot, CanandaiguaGroot led Canandaigua to back-to-back Section V titles in 2004 and 2005, and was named an All-American, Finger Lakes Player of the Year and Section V Offensive Player of the Year the latter season. Groot then attended Maryland, where he was considered one of the nation's top midfielders. Jack Hinderland, Webster ThomasAnother two-time All-American during his high school career, Hinderland was Monroe County's Player of the Year as a senior when he led Section V with 79 goals. After high school, he attended the US Naval Academy. TD Ierlan, VictorArguably the sport’s greatest FOGO at any level, the 2016 Victor graduate’s list of accolades is long. A few of note: Ierlan was a two-time USA Lacrosse All-American, two-time All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year and the Democrat and Chronicle’s All-Decade top player for the 2010s. His sterling performance at the faceoff X helped Victor capture state titles his junior and senior seasons. Ierlan had collegiate stops at Albany, Yale and Denver and holds several NCAA records.Jeff Long, IrondequoitOne of a few players on this list to compete in the Upstate Lacrosse League, it'd be impossible to tell the history of Irondequoit lacrosse without Long. A member of the USA Lacrosse, Greater Rochester Lacrosse and US Naval Academy hall of fames, Long's success on the field can be traced back to his time with the Indians in the 1970s, when he exited high school as Section V's all-time scoring leader. That scoring ability continued at the Naval Academy, where he became the team's all-time leading scorer and a three-time All-American. Michael Manley, Penn YanWhen the Democrat and Chronicle resurrected All-Greater Rochester for boys lacrosse in 2007, the then-senior Manley was an obvious choice for inclusion. A long-stick midfielder, Manley still managed to contribute 21 goals and nearly 50 points to Penn Yan's dynastic program. Prior to his professional career, Manley was also a key player for Duke University. Paul Murphy, PenfieldRecently named to the Greater Rochester Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Murphy was a two-time All-American at Penfield in the late 1980s. In college he helped Princeton win two national titles and was a team captain for one of those groups. Brice Queener, Penn YanThe Queener family is well-known for its contributions to local boys and girls lacrosse, and it's Brice that receives the nod in this respect. Queener was a member of Penn Yan's state title-winning team in 2001. That year, he recorded seven points and was named section tournament MVP in the Class B final, and was named an All-American after the season before heading to Georgetown. Queener became heavily involved in the women's game as a coach following his playing career. He is currently the head coach at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Ben Reeves, Pal-MacThe most prolific scorer in Section V history, Reeves' 585 points rank third all-time in New York state history. The 2014 Pal-Mac grad is also the only local player to exceed 500 career points. He amassed 86 goals and 170 points his final varsity season, while leading the Raiders to their first section final appearance. The offensive production continued at Yale, where he is the Bulldogs' all-time leading scorer and in the top 10 in NCAA history. Reeves won the Tewaaraton Award as the nation's top player in 2018. Blaze Riorden, FairportThe 2012 All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year, Monroe County Player of the Year and All-American selection led Fairport to a 20-1 record and state semifinal appearance his final varsity season, when he posted a 68.4 save percentage. Riorden later backstopped UAlbany. During the 2017 NCAA tournament, Riorden became a viral sensation when he became one of the few known goalies to go coast-to-coast for a goal. That play was nominated for an ESPY.Tom Rosa, Rush-Henrietta (Sperry)Rosa won nearly 300 faceoffs in 1982, an eye-popping total for the sectional championship team. But Rosa wasn't a typical faceoff specialist, as he stayed on the field and contributed strong offensive numbers too. In college, Rosa led Hobart to four consecutive national titles and was the Division III Player of the Year in 1986. Brent Rothfuss, PenfieldRothfuss was a star player for Penfield in the early 1990s, leading his team to two straight Section V titles. Rothfuss later attended Nazareth, where he pushed the Golden Flyers to national titles in 1996 and 1997. He graduated as the program’s all-time leading scorer and was the Division III Player of the Year in 1997. Rothfuss has also had a major impact in the youth lacrosse circuit. In 2017, he founded the Aces girls club program, home to many of the area’s top high school players.Tim Soudan, FairportSoudan is the only player on this list to make the inaugural All-Greater Rochester team in 1986. He helped Fairport win consecutive Section V titles his sophomore and junior seasons, scoring a then-school record 56 goals the latter year. Soudan's greatest success, though, might've been as a professional. He competed for both the Rochester Rattlers and Knighthawks, and was named to the latter's inaugural hall of fame class in 2009.Jamie Trimboli, VictorThe second player on this list from the Blue Devils' 2010s dynasty, Trimboli won a pair of state titles and was twice named All-Greater Rochester and an All-American. Trimboli also played for Syracuse, where he was an impact player from Day 1. The midfielder was a four-time All-American and two-time captain for the Orange. Guy Van Arsdale, GenevaGeneva is the region's oldest program, so it's only appropriate such a program is represented. And who better than Van Arsdale, a two-time All-American goalie for the Panthers. Van Arsdale played collegiately at Hobart, and has enjoyed several coaching stops including RIT. Joe Walters, IrondequoitA decorated high school player, Walters was the top scorer on Irondequoit's championship team in 2001 and led the Indians back to the final in 2002 as a senior. His playing career really took off in college at Maryland. He was named the ACC's top rookie in 2003, then the conference's top player in 2004 and 2006. He was drafted No. 1 overall in the Major Lacrosse League after his final college season. Walters' professional career also included three league titles with the Rochester Knighthawks. Andrew Whipple, IrondequoitBefore his time leading a powerhouse program at Pittsford, Whipple was a star in his own right for a storied team in Irondequoit. A sectional champion each year of his high school career, Whipple was a two-time All-American (1992, 1993) who exited high school as Section V's all-time leading point-getter. After high school, Whipple enjoyed a strong collegiate career at Maryland, where he competed in three NCAA championship games, was the ACC's Freshman of the Year in 1995 and an All-ACC selection in 1997. More so with Juventus, given that they missed out on Champions League football. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMManchester City midfielder actively exploring summer exit after FIFA World Cup snubManchester City midfielder actively exploring summer exit after FIFA World Cup snubNico Gonzalez struggled for minutes under Pep Guardiola in the second half of the recent seasonSpanish midfielder failed to make FIFA World Cup squad as he played second-fiddle to RodriBarcelona academy graduate assessing Man City future after disappointments over game timeManchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez will exploring a summer exit after frustrations over a lack of playing time, as per a new report. The 24-year-old enjoyed an impressive first half of the recent season by establishing himself as a capable stand-in for Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who spent the campaign in and out of the side owing to recurring fitness setbacks.Gonzalez arrived at the Etihad Stadium in January 2025 from Porto as an emergency signing, helping the Blues record a third-place Premier League finish in the challenging 2024-25 season to qualify for the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League campaign.Hugo Viana faces major Nico Gonzalez dilemma as clubs line up for Manchester City midfielderWith Pep Guardiola departing as Manchester City manager and talks progressing with Enzo Maresa to replace the Catalan, a summer of major changes lies in store at the Etihad Stadium.Report: Nico pursuing Man City exitHaving missed out on Spain’s FIFA World Cup squad, Gonzalez is understood to be eyeing a summer departure for regular first-team football away from Manchester City, as reported by Times Sport’s Paul Hirst.Despite receiving huge plaudits for his role in the side during Rodri’s absence in the last 18 months, Guardiola often decided to look past Gonzalez in midfield as he leaned on departing captain Bernardo Silva in the number six position.Gonzalez was also frequently left out of City’s matchday squads in the final weeks of the season and as contract talks progress with Rodri, it is likely that the former will leave City this summer. The Spaniard has his best years ahead of him and will benefit from a fresh start wherein he is playing week-in, week-out after a formative year-and-a-half of learning from the likes of Guardiola, Rodri and Silva at the Etihad Stadium. Will Man City sell Gonzalez this summer? It is highly likely that City will look to cash in on Gonzalez this summer as the midfielder looks for an exit to progress his career, frustrated with a bit-part role in Manchester.Pep Guardiola issues career advice to Nico Gonzalez as Manchester City avoid Southampton FA Cup scareCity sporting director Hugo Viana is spearheading the club’s pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who is expected to learn from Rodri and develop into the Blues’ long-term number six – should he arrive at the Etihad Stadium this summer. The likes of Mateo Kovacic, Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly can all comfortably play at number six so Gonzalez leaving will not fret Manchester City, who will sanction a sale if a suitor club can match their valuation of the midfielder.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow to fix Tottenham: Start by selling Cristian Romero, and follow this blueprintThomas Frank had called the task at Tottenham akin to turning around a supertanker. Instead, Spurs almost sank. Roberto De Zerbi just about kept them afloat in the Premier League. The non-executive chairman Peter Charrington was nonetheless compelled to write an open letter to supporters saying their last two league finishes were “not acceptable”. He didn’t mean the fourth place they occupied at the end of the Champions League’s league phase. Seventeenth again, ole, ole? Spurs could celebrate survival on Sunday whereas, with the bottom three distanced last season, their finishing position felt academic. That could have been called a one-off – and did seem to be when Frank’s team were among the early-season pacesetters – whereas now the first target could be summed up in two words: never again. De Zerbi’s job feels physical and psychological; his tactics, both on and off the field, and transfers can influence it. Over the last two seasons, Spurs have lost 47 games, 39 of them in the Premier League. Ange Postecoglou needs to shoulder some of the blame: losing became a habit on his watch. They need to shed the culture of defeats; in particular, after just three victories in their last 22 home league games, they need to rediscover the habit of winning at their deluxe stadium.Cristian Romero should be the first Spurs players out the door (Getty)They could do with keeping their players fit, too. One table Spurs did top was the number of days footballers lost to injury. That cannot all be chalked up to misfortune and was a reason why, despite having one of the largest squads in the division, they seemed to have one of the smallest. They were often short of options in key positions. De Zerbi provided a sure hand at the tiller of the supertanker, but Tottenham suffered from a crisis of leadership; and not just Frank’s flailing attempts to prevent being dragged under water or Igor Tudor’s appearance, as the ‘ferryman’ of Serie A looked more like the captain of the Titanic. Cristian Romero was an awful choice as skipper, his sendings-off and suspensions, injuries and interest in the Argentinian fixture list meant he often led by the wrong sort of example. The January interest in Andy Robertson was instructive, especially as Spurs have three left-backs, in Destiny Udogie, the versatile Djed Spence and the winter arrival Souza. The Scotland captain is expected to go to N17 – which carries the assumption De Zerbi shares the interest in a deal proposed before his arrival – and would look the obvious candidate for the armband; the love for him at Liverpool spoke to his character. James Maddison, a galvanising force even when semi-fit at the end of the season, could make a fine deputy to him.As for Romero, he should be sold. For all his undeniable ability on the ball, while he excelled in the Europa League triumph, Spurs may be better off without him. The suggestions are that another Argentinian, Marcos Senesi, is headed to replace him, fresh from a fine season with Bournemouth and on a free transfer. It appears, too, that De Zerbi is interested in a host of his former Brighton charges, in goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, midfielder Carlos Baleba and centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, with John Stones an alternative possibility as a ball-playing defender. A complication and a consequence might be that Tottenham could need to reduce the size of their squad and bring in money. (PA)In Charrington’s letter, he promised to build a squad to compete at the highest levels in England and Europe and spend in multiple windows. The books could also have to balanced. Consecutive 17th-place finishes bring far lower Premier League income than anticipated and they will not be in Europe next season. Fans have often bemoaned their famously low wages-to-turnover ratio. It has led to accusations Spurs have not invested in the squad. Yet they have spent about £700m in the last four years; they made a pre-tax loss of £121m last season. They could owe over £250m in transfer fees. So a clearout is required, especially given this is an underachieving team. Guglielmo Vicario is one possible departure, especially after Antonin Kinsky overcame his traumatic trip to Madrid to end the season in fine form. The Czech’s passing skills make him seem a better fit for a De Zerbi team. If Robertson arrives, the injury-prone Udogie could be the logical left-back to leave. The out-of-contract Ben Davies, a loyal servant but another who has been sidelined, might also go. With the highly-rated Luka Vuskovic earning a place in the Bundesliga team of the season while on loan at Hamburg, there are reasons to bring him back and sell Radu Dragusin.Further forward, Randal Kolo Muani’s unsuccessful loan offers no grounds to buy him. But Joao Palhinha, whose winner against Everton kept Spurs up, provides more of a dilemma. Bought as a destroyer, the Portuguese provided important goals and wants to turn his loan into a long-term deal. Yet Spurs already have a host of workmanlike midfielders, even with the out-of-contract Yves Bissouma another possible departure.A problem for the three managers this season was that their side had too little creativity. Much of that could be chalked up to injury, with neither Maddison nor Dejan Kulusevski starting a game, Mohammed Kudus’ campaign being curtailed in January and then Xavi Simons rupturing his cruciate ligament in April.Maddison could be like a new signing for Spurs – if they address their fitness and injury issues (PA Wire)The Dutchman will miss a chunk of next season. De Zerbi nevertheless faces a decision which of his flair players to prioritise and how to accommodate them. A season where Palhinha was the second top scorer in the Premier League and Micky van de Ven the joint second best in all competitions suggests Spurs could do with more firepower from the forward line. That might not be cheap. At least De Zerbi’s preferred style of play, attacking and ambitious, seems in Tottenham’s truest traditions. And the Italian could suddenly be in an advantageous position. A manager who can use time on the training ground to alter a style of play and whose sides can overwhelm opponents when fitter and fresher will have no Europe, perhaps only 40 games. Tottenham may only need a relatively small pool of players next season, if they can keep them fit, make the right choices in the transfer market and selection.Brighton played 46 in 2022-23 and, with no one who could really be called a De Zerbi signing, he steered them to sixth. There was the risk Tottenham would play 46 next year in the Championship alone. Charrington’s promise to get them back where they belong was a recognition at boardroom level that Spurs had lost their way. But at least, when they did, they were not found in the Football League.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

APNEWS.COMCornyn went to great lengths to avoid Trump’s wrath. The Texas senator lost his seat anywaySen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, center right, speaks alongside, from left, daughter Danley Cornyn, wife Sandy Cornyn and daughter Haley Cornyn, during a primary runoff election night event after losing the Republican party's nomination Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in Austin. (AP Photo/Ashley Landis)2026-05-27T04:06:17Z PLANO, Texas (AP) — As it turned out, it would never be enough. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn tried for more than a year to show Donald Trump and Texas Republicans that he and the president were on the same team. Cornyn posted a photo of himself reading Trump’s “The Art of the Deal.” He proposed legislation to rename a stretch of interstate in Trump’s honor. Perhaps most glaringly, the Senate institutionalist who long supported the filibuster reversed his position in a failed effort to advance voting restrictions that are a priority for the president. None of it worked. On Tuesday, Cornyn became the latest in a line of Republicans who lost their primaries after falling out of favor with a president with little tolerance for dissent and a seemingly insatiable appetite for retribution. The four-term senator lost by double digits to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who Trump endorsed last week as “a true MAGA Warrior.” Cornyn, on the other hand, “was VERY disloyal to me,” Trump wrote on social media. Trump’s intervention in the Texas runoff came after weeks of successfully backing primary challengers in Indiana, Louisiana and Kentucky as revenge against incumbents who broke with his agenda. Cornyn’s attempt to avoid the same fate made even some of his supporters wince.“You look at the positions he took to please the president and the groveling and whatever,” said former Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, a Republican and Trump critic who didn’t seek reelection during the president’s first midterm in 2018. “It was rather painful to watch.” Read More Cornyn started early with ad touting pro-Trump voting recordCornyn’s loss wasn’t for a lack of political gymnastics and astronomical campaign spending. His campaign began running an advertisement last summer — part of an astounding nearly-$100-million air war by the senator and allied groups — with Cornyn looking into the camera and saying, “I voted with President Trump 99% of the time.” On Cornyn’s campaign homepage, Trump and Cornyn stand side-by-side with thumbs pointed upward in an image aimed at projecting solidarity. Deeper in the website, the category titled “The Trump-Cornyn Record” notes the senator’s role securing votes for Trump’s signature 2017 tax cut bill. Cornyn has also been championing provisions in Trump’s signature tax-and-spending legislation to finance work on the U.S.-Mexico border wall. The senator had dismissed the project as “naive” during Trump’s 2016 campaign. But in January, he stood along a section of completed wall in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley touting the measure’s $11 billion for Texas contractors’ work at “the direction of the president of the United States, to whom I am very grateful.” Cornyn’s 2023 dismissal of Trump’s return glares in backgroundCornyn’s praise for his party’s leader and president were not unusual, but they clash with a statement Cornyn made in May 2023, when Trump was mounting his presidential comeback campaign. “Trump’s time has passed him by,” he told reporters. “I don’t think President Trump understands that when you run in a general election, you have to appeal to voters beyond your base.” Trump would go on to easily win the nomination and carry every battleground state in the general election. Cornyn would hew closely to the president for the first 16 months of his second administration, hoping at the outside chance of his endorsement or to keeping him from weighing in at all.But Trump did not forget the past slights.“John Cornyn is a good man, and I worked well with him, but he was not supportive of me when times were tough,” he wrote on social media while endorsing Paxton.Smaller gestures, and one big one Cornyn has playfully worked to promote Trump fandom, last year posting a picture on social media of himself thoughtfully peering into the pages of Trump’s 1987 memoir and business advice book, “The Art of the Deal.” In a more obvious gesture, he proposed designating a section of a U.S. highway from the Texas Gulf Coast to Montana as “Interstate 47,” to honor a 47th president with a well-documented love of naming things after himself. In a news release about the proposal, filed just over two weeks before Tuesday’s runoff, Cornyn said it would be known as the “Trump Interstate.” The more tectonic shift occurred in March, after Trump had teased a possible endorsement of either Cornyn or Paxton in the runoff. Paxton swiftly said he would consider dropping his candidacy if the Republican-controlled Senate lifted the filibuster and passed the SAVE America Act, a series of voting restrictions that Trump has described as an essential part of his agenda. The following week, Cornyn wrote an op-ed in the New York Post — Trump’s favorite hometown newspaper — backing away from his previous support of the filibuster. He vowed to “support whatever changes to Senate rules that may prove necessary” to get the bill “through the Senate and on the president’s desk for his signature.” Flake watched with unease.“I know John and his long-held positions on the filibuster and the Senate’s institutions,” he said. “No office is worth that.”___Bedayn reported from San Antonio. Detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he was on his fourth day of isolation in a Missouri jail as he battled the fevers and chills of COVID-19.His request for mental health treatment had been put off, records show, and staff had forbidden Rayo from making his nightly call to his mother as a precaution intended to prevent the spread of illness. He pleaded with his jailers in handwritten notes to arrange a conversation with her. “I feel in my heart that she’s very worried about me,” he wrote in Spanish.A guard collected the note and walked away. Share Share Facebook Copy Link copied Print Email X LinkedIn Bluesky Flipboard Pinterest Reddit Read More Rayo’s April 2025 death was the first suicide in a spike among ICE detainees that has alarmed public health officials and jail experts. They said the unprecedented number of suicide deaths is an indication that authorities are failing to properly oversee the detention of tens of thousands of immigrants swept up in the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation strategy. An Associated Press investigation found that at least 10 detainees, all men, have died by suicide since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, a pace that far exceeds the growth in the detainee population, according to a review of ICE data, autopsy reports, coroner’s rulings, and police records. Since October, seven deaths have been classified as suicides, a number that is already the most for any fiscal year in the agency’s history. ICE has usually recorded one or no such deaths annually. “Something is going profoundly wrong from any kind of public health or mental health perspective,” said Dr. Sanjay Basu, a University of California-San Francisco epidemiologist who cowrote a study documenting the increase in mortality and suicide rates among ICE detainees. “This is one of those alarming, sudden increases.” Read More ___EDITOR’S NOTE: This story includes discussion of suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, the national suicide and crisis lifeline in the U.S. is available by calling or texting 988.___Nine of the deaths were of Hispanic men who had arrived in the U.S. from four countries, the AP found. One man was a Chinese citizen. Their average age was 32. While Trump has characterized those facing deportation as the “worst of the worst,” seven of the 10 had no record of violent crimes in the U.S.The suicides account for nearly a fifth of the 51 deaths in ICE custody since January 2025. The majority of those deaths were from natural causes and experts say many of them would have been preventable with timely medical care.Department of Homeland Security acting assistant secretary Lauren Bies said suicide deaths in ICE custody remain “extremely rare.”Bies said detention staff follow protocols to protect detainees who show signs of self-harming and that ICE requires annual suicide prevention training. She said detainees receive comprehensive healthcare, including mental health services.Investigation finds violations of ICE detention standardsThe reasons behind any suicide are complex, and each death often has multiple contributing factors, according to experts. ICE detainees report intense stress after being detained, fear of being returned to countries where their safety may be jeopardized, and frustration and loneliness over the inability to communicate due to language barriers.Detainees can also feel helplessness because of the complexity surrounding immigration law. Unlike those in the criminal justice system, most detainees do not have lawyers and their detention on immigration violations is not meant to be punitive.ICE becomes responsible for their well-being when they enter detention, and experts say well-run lockups should have few, if any, suicides. That’s because staff can take steps to mitigate the chances that detainees harm themselves by identifying those at risk, getting them care and monitoring them closely, the experts said. AP’s investigation found that ICE detention centers have repeatedly fallen short in ways that violate ICE’s own standards. An examination of the 10 suicide deaths found the men died across ICE’s detention network, including at centers long run by private contractors and county jails who recently became ICE partners. The AP found that staff in the facilities ignored signs of distress, delayed mental health treatment and failed to monitor detainees who were already deemed at risk. They also permitted detainees to have access to materials that could be used for self-harm, according to AP’s review of ICE inspection reports and death records. In some cases, they jailed distressed detainees in isolation, which can exacerbate feelings of humiliation and helplessness, according to experts.ICE has repeatedly asserted that it screens detainees within 12 hours of arrival for medical, dental and mental health conditions. At least three of the nine facilities where ICE detainees died by suicide have struggled to meet that standard, according to ICE inspection reports and jail records.Dr. Homer Venters, former chief medical officer of New York City jails who previously consulted with ICE on preventing detainee deaths, called the rise in suicides terrifying. The increase “reflects failures in how the system’s being operated, and particularly failures in how the first stages of coming into detention are happening so that people aren’t being assessed adequately,” Venters said. “And then if that receiving screening picks up red flags, they’re not acted on in a way that reduces the risk of them having preventable death.”From border crossing to detention A photo of Brayan Rayo Garzon who died by suicide while in ICE custody in April 2025, is displayed in his mother’s apartment in St. Louis, on Friday, May 1, 2026. A third was a 45-year-old who had repeatedly crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally and had a long criminal record.Rayo, who took his own life after pleading to talk to his mother, was a veteran of the Colombian military who had worked as a street vendor in his home country. A week after he turned 26 in 2023, his family crossed the U.S. border in California. He was detained for three months before being permitted to settle with family in St. Louis, records and interviews show. His mother, Adriana Garzon, said Rayo caught on quickly to life in the U.S., making friends easily and working as a housepainter and food delivery driver. He wanted to save money to hire a lawyer to help him stay in the country after a judge in 2024 ordered that he be sent back to Colombia, she said.He was arrested in March 2025 by St. Louis police after being caught using a stolen credit card, which he had obtained from a friend, at a Vape shop, court records show. ICE then took him into custody. An ICE record obtained by AP classified Rayo as a laborer who was a low risk to public safety.ICE placed Rayo in the Phelps County jail in Rolla, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from St. Louis.Suicides reveal shortcomings across ICE’s detention networkThe deaths have revealed holes in treatment and oversight across ICE’s system, where the detained population has spiked by 50% to 60,000 during Trump’s second term.Five died in centers run by longtime ICE detention partners, CoreCivic and the GEO Group. A sixth died at a camp operated by an inexperienced contractor that ICE has since replaced. Three died in jails run by sheriffs, and one at a federal prison. “We are deeply saddened by and take very seriously the passing of any individual in our care,” CoreCivic spokesperson Brian Todd said.GEO Group spokesperson Christopher Ferreira said the company trains staff on suicide prevention and seeks “to maintain a safe and secure environment in compliance with the standards and requirements set by the federal government.” Officials at the three jails either declined comment or didn’t return messages.Leo Cruz Silva, a 34-year-old who had repeatedly illegally entered the country from Mexico, suffered an acute mental health crisis following his detention after an arrest for public intoxication last fall in a St. Louis suburb, records show. For two nights in Missouri’s Ste. Genevieve County Jail, Cruz screamed, hid under his bed and reported hallucinations, according to an ICE report on his death. Yet he did not get help quickly.A nurse ordered antipsychotic medications and planned to get him treatment the next week, the ICE report said.On the third day, he was found dead in his cell. Chaofeng Ge arrived in ICE custody last summer at a Pennsylvania facility run by the GEO Group in mental distress, having pleaded guilty to a minor gift card fraud and attempted suicide in state custody, said David Rankin, an attorney representing Ge’s family. In five days at the facility, he did not get mental health treatment and was unable to communicate because no one spoke Mandarin, Rankin said. Ultimately, Ge went unmonitored before he was found hanged in a shower stall.“It’s clear that ICE has taken very few steps to ensure the safety of these people,” Rankin said. “They appear to want to make this process as cruel and inhuman as possible. APNEWS.COMFor one Ukrainian war amputee, rebuilding is painful after a Russian strike killed her husbandIryna Nakonechna knits a toy capybara at her home in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, Saturday, May 9, 2026. (AP Photo/Evgeniy Maloletka)2026-05-27T05:07:44Z KRYVYI RIH, Ukraine (AP) — After Iryna Nakonechna lost her left leg last year in a Russian missile attack that also killed her husband, the Ukrainian woman decided everything tied to her former self had to go.She cut off her dark wavy hair and removed furniture, clothes, trinkets and photographs from her home. Just one reminder of her previous life remained: a portrait of herself and her husband, Serhii Nakonechnyi. Shedding her old identity was necessary, she said, to endure the painful reinvention required to build a life with a prosthetic.Today, Nakonechna is quick-witted and effervescent, her laughter loud and sudden. She wears a pixie haircut and bold red cat-eye glasses, and knits small toy capybaras — an animal that has become an unofficial symbol among amputees in Ukraine. But beneath the sparkle in her eyes lies a grief woven into the painful process of becoming someone new. It’s an often unspoken reality beneath the narratives of resilience surrounding the tens of thousands of people in Ukraine who have lost limbs in the war that began more than four years ago when Russia launched a full-scale invasion. “The hardest thing was accepting myself with these injuries, wounds that are not only physical,” she said. “Coming to terms with how much my life has changed has been very difficult.” The exact number of war amputees in Ukraine is unknown, but it continues to rise as landmines, artillery, and missile and drone strikes inflict catastrophic injuries on soldiers and civilians. The increase has fueled an expansion of rehabilitation and prosthetics services, while also reshaping Ukrainian society. Prosthetic limbs have become increasingly visible and powerful symbols of survival and defiance.Nakonechna, 50, still walks with a limp and uses a cane as she learns to trust the prosthetic that reaches her upper thigh. The airstrike also left her with limited mobility in her arms, making it difficult to lift heavy objects. Read More Walking with confidenceThe next step in Nakonechna’s rehabilitation is learning to walk without a cane, her physical therapist, Anastasiia Stetsenko, said. She must not only build her strength, but also her confidence. She must trust herself through movements most people take for granted: climbing stairs, squatting to pick something up, navigating uneven streets, or chasing after her 2-year-old grandson at the playground.Nakonechna’s weekly hourlong sessions with Stetsenko begin with removing her prosthetic and resting it against the wall. Then, Stetsenko has Nakonechna lift a plastic bar while seated, timing the movement to her breathing.“You are a demon,” Nakonechna says to Stetsenko, when the exercises become taxing.Later, Stetsenko has Nakonechna lie back and rotate her amputated limb in slow circles, testing the limits of her range of motion.“This feels like an extreme sport,” Nakonechna jokes. Finally, Stetsenko suggests she squat while gripping a ballet barre, one of the hardest movements for her to relearn.“I will respond as my grandson would,” Nakonechna says. “Just no.”The two women break into peals of laughter, sounding more like old friends than therapist and patient. The day of the attackThe attack happened on March 5, 2025. After dinner, Nakonechna and her husband took advantage of unseasonably warm spring weather with an evening stroll. They were near the entrance of hotel in central Kryvyi Rih when a Russian missile tore through the building, hurling them in opposite directions. Her ears rang as her husband, now several meters away, screamed. She pushed herself upright and felt her left shoulder crunch. The bones were broken. She reached for her left leg but couldn’t feel it. The couple ended up at different hospitals. Her husband died the next day. “I never got to say goodbye,” Nakonechna said. “I wasn’t even at the funeral.”Over the next two months, the days dissolved into a blur as Nakonechna underwent two surgeries a week.By May of that year, she could finally sit up again. She felt relieved, she said, but it was only the beginning. A new lifeThe apartment Nakonechna once shared with her husband is now almost unrecognizable.“I had to get rid of everything from the past,” she said. “And focus on living my life, even if it was half the life I had before.”Nakonechna invited her 77-year-old mother, who has dementia, to move in with her. At lunch, her mother carefully sets a pot of borscht on the table. Nakonechna said such tasks are no longer easy for her.She laments that she still cannot lift her grandson, Tymofii. One day, the boy placed a sticker of a cartoon capybara wearing a prosthetic leg onto her own prosthetic. She left it there.A meticulous craftswoman, she later began knitting toy capybaras through Superhumans, a modern war-trauma center specializing in prosthetics and rehabilitation. During the war, veterans started putting the toys and stickers of the fuzzy, playful animals on their limbs to put strangers at ease. The capybara has since come to symbolize resilience and the determination to reclaim joy after devastation. Nakonechna’s toys quickly became popular, and she spends hours knitting them. Her favorite part is assembling the pieces at the end, when the toy becomes whole.“When I count the stitches, I think only about the stitches, not about the life that could have been and unfortunately is not,” Nakonechna said.Recently, she marked a personal victory: For the first time since her injury, she wore shorts. The small act marked a powerful shift.“I accepted myself as I am,” she said.___Associated Press journalist Vasilisa Stepanenko contributed to this report. I’m very confident. “I’m disappointed and sad not to be able to go to the World Cup, but I’m happy to be among the goalkeepers of such high calibre.”Supporting SpainAlthough missing out on the World Cup was clearly painful for the goalkeeper, Remiro handled the disappointment with maturity and respect towards the players selected ahead of him.Remiro was not picked for the Spanish World Cup squad. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal star hints he is very unhappy with his game timeArsenal star hints he is very unhappy with his game timeGabriel Jesus is now firmly at the bottom of the striker pecking order at Arsenal, and, understandably, the Brazilian is unhappy with his current role at the Emirates Stadium following a difficult season for the forward. He returned from a long injury layoff at the end of last year and has remained an important figure within the squad since making his comeback. Despite that, Arsenal possesses several attacking players who have maintained strong form and fitness levels throughout the campaign, making it increasingly difficult for Jesus to secure regular playing time in the team.Reduced Role Under ArtetaThe competition for places in Arsenal’s attack has intensified in recent months, and Jesus has struggled to establish himself ahead of other forwards who have consistently delivered strong performances during the club’s successful title-winning campaign. As a result, speculation surrounding his future has continued to grow ahead of the summer transfer window. Reports have linked the former Manchester City striker with a possible departure from Arsenal, particularly as his opportunities under Mikel Arteta appear to have become increasingly limited during the latter stages of the season.Jesus Addresses Future UncertaintyThe Brazilian has now opened up about his lack of game time while speaking about his current situation at the club and the uncertainty surrounding his future at Arsenal.Speaking to ESPN Brasil, he said:“There’s a lot of talk (about the future) and I’m being very honest. It’s not easy for a player who is always looking to improve and help on the field with what’s happening… But like I said, I’m very respectful, I have a lot of respect for the coach, and especially my teammates.”His comments suggest frustration with the situation while also demonstrating his respect for Arteta and the rest of the Arsenal squad. With the summer transfer window approaching, questions will continue surrounding whether Jesus remains part of Arsenal’s long-term plans or whether the club could consider offers if an opportunity for a transfer emerges in the coming months._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCommanders could regret one move in 2026The Washington Commanders raised some eyebrows before free agency began, releasing center Tyler Biadasz after two seasons with the team. Since signing a three-year deal in 2024, Biadasz has anchored the interior of Washington's offensive line, starting 31 of 34 regular-season games and all three postseason games.Heading into the offseason, the Commanders' offensive line was seen as a team strength, with Biadasz viewed more as an extension candidate, rather than a potential release candidate. While we've never heard why Washington moved on Biadasz, the team reportedly believes backup Nick Allegretti can hold the position down as well as Biadasz for less money. For whatever it's worth, Biadasz's play did take a step back in 2025. Biadasz wasn't on the market long, as the Los Angeles Chargers signed him to a three-year deal worth $30 million, the same contract numbers Washington signed him for in 2024. If anyone kept up with the Chargers last season, you'd know their offensive line was a mess. Left tackle Rashawn Slater was lost for the season before Week 1, while right tackle Joe Alt, who moved to left tackle, was injured and missed 11 games, ending the season on injured reserve. This offseason, Los Angeles completely revamped the interior, signing Biadasz and guard Cole Strange in free agency, while spending a second-round pick on guard Jake Slaughter. The Chargers expect Slater and Alt back in 2026. So, here's the question: Are the Chargers right for being excited, or did the Commanders hastily release Biadasz, hoping they could lander former Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum?Bill Barnwell of ESPN believes signing Biadasz was the Chargers' best offseason move.Best: Signing Tyler Biadasz before free agency began. When the Commanders surprisingly cut their veteran center in late February, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz was wise to get involved. Before Tyler Linderbaum massively propelled the top of the center market forward, the Chargers were able to bring in Biadasz on a three-year deal for $30 million, guaranteeing $15 million of the $20 million he's owed over the first two seasons. It was no secret that Washington was in the bidding for Linderbaum until the Raiders blew everyone out of the water with a three-year, $81 million deal to land him. We'll never know if the Commanders cut Biadasz, expecting to land Linderbaum. If that's the case, it's a gamble they badly lost. Allegretti has played guard and center throughout his NFL career. He likes playing center, feeling it is more natural for him, and is ready for the opportunity. The only other center the Commanders brought in this offseason was Matt Gulbin, a sixth-round pick from Michigan State. Gulbin is no threat to unseat Allegretti, at least initially. Washington will run a more traditional offense in 2026, with new offensive coordinator David Blough. The Commanders promoted assistant offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton to offensive line coach. Perhaps, Blough and Stapleton simply liked Allegretti better. Biadasz would've been a good fit for the zone-blocking scheme that Washington plans to employ. Something else to watch is quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders plan to play him more under center in 2026. Biadasz has been a full-time NFL center for six seasons and would've helped Daniels make the transition smoother. Washington has had a productive offseason, revamping its defense and making the team younger and faster overall. However, Biadasz is one move that could come back to haunt the Commanders. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Steelers wide receiver says Aaron Rodgers played role in his Pittsburgh exitThe Pittsburgh Steelers lost out on one veteran wide receiver in 2026 free agency, and it apparently had everything to do with Aaron Rodgers — just not in the way some may think.According to ex-Steelers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, he was actually entertaining a return to Pittsburgh in 2026 to play with Rodgers another season, but the nature of the waiting game pushed him to see what other teams were interested.“I was still interested in playing for Pittsburgh,” Valdes-Scantling said via the Yahoo! Sports YouTube channel. “But I was very adamant on I wanted to play with Aaron if I was going to go back to Pittsburgh because he’s one of my best friends that I’ve made in this league over my nine-year career now. He was still undecided if he was going to go back and play or if he was going to hang it up. So, I was like, ‘Let’s see what else is out there.’”Valdes-Scantling, who played with Rodgers for four seasons in Green Bay (2018-2021), reunited with his former Packers quarterback in Pittsburgh for five games in 2025, catching just 10 passes for 80 yards and one touchdown in his short stint with the Steelers.MVS went on to sign a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys in April 2026, while Rodgers wound up returning to the Steelers on a one-year contract that reunites him with Mike McCarthy. For up-to-date Steelers coverage, including any offseason moves, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Ex-Steelers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling says Rodgers played role in 2026 exit0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAston Villa manager Unai Emery says PSG ‘the best team in the world’Aston Villa manager Unai Emery says PSG ‘the best team in the world’Two of Unai Emery’s former teams meet in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday night. Emery managed Paris Saint-Germain between 2016 and 2018 and Arsenal from 2018 and 2019. The former, the Spaniard believes, are now the best team in the world.PSG are the reigning European champions and go into the UCL final, which will take place in Budapest, as the favourites. Emery was full of praise for his compatriot, Mikel Arteta, for the work that he has done since taking the helm at the Emirates Stadium. “Arsenal are progressing more and more […] this year has been their best performance. To compete in the Champions League and the Premier League, as they have done, is very difficult,” began Emery in an interview with L’Équipe. He added, “The Premier League is the most difficult league in the world. There are the best managers, the best teams, the best players… so winning the league title and managing at the same time to get to the Champions League final is really good. Arsenal and PSG have shown that they are the two best teams in the world this year.” However, for the Aston Villa manager, who will once again get a taste for UCL football next season, one of his former sides is in better shape than the other. “Today, they are the best club in the world, the best team, the one that produces the best collective performance, with the best manager (Luis Enrique), even if, of course, there are lots of other great managers.”On Luis Enrique, who has led PSG to back-to-back Champions League finals, Emery added, “Luis Enrique has done an excellent job. His ability to create sympathy is fantastic. He has a lot of personality. He has completely transformed PSG. It is always incredible to watch them play.”GFFN | Luke Entwistle0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Direct Premier League rival plotting to raid Liverpool for ‘outstanding’ stalwartReport: Direct Premier League rival plotting to raid Liverpool for ‘outstanding’ stalwartLiverpool could find themselves fielding transfer interest for one of their players from a direct Premier League rival this summer.Last weekend saw Mo Salah and Andy Robertson granted an emotional send-off at Anfield after nine years with the Reds, and there now remains only one player who was in the first team prior to the arrival of that duo in 2017.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYJoe Gomez has just completed his 11th season with LFC, but with his contract about to enter its final year and the 29-year-old limited to seven starts in the most recent Premier League campaign, it’s unsurprising that his future has come under the spotlight.Aston Villa targeting summer move for GomezAccording to David Kent for the Daily Mail, the long-serving Liverpool defender has emerged as a potential transfer target for Aston Villa, with Unai Emery determined to enhance his squad as they prepare for a return to Champions League football for 2026/27.The newly-crowned Europa League winners haven’t yet made an official approach for Gomez, who appeals to the Villa Park hierarchy because of his ability to cover multiple defensive positions. The 29-year-old has also been monitored by Besiktas and AC Milan heading into a summer in which Anfield chiefs may be left with a significant decision over the Reds’ number 2.Want more Empire of the Kop coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trustLiverpool can’t afford to offload Gomez yetIt’s viable that FSG might take a pragmatic stance on Gomez, considering his age profile, contract situation, sparsity of starts under Arne Slot and worrying injury record, so we definitely wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a sale this summer. The defender recently admitted uncertainty over his own future, and with Jeremy Jacquet arriving from Rennes, competition for centre-back places at Liverpool is set to be heightened. However, Reds fans would surely be up in arms if the 29-year-old is allowed to leave for a direct rival in Aston Villa, who finished one place and five points ahead of us in the recently concluded Premier League campaign.LFC should be very careful with the decision they make on the Londoner, who’s previously been hailed by Slot for his ‘outstanding’ performances despite not being a regular starter under the Dutchman. The arrival of Jacquet could potentially be offset by Ibrahima Konate leaving if he doesn’t sign a contract extension in the next month. Even if the latter extends his stay at Anfield, the presence of an experienced figure like Gomez in the dressing room could be invaluable, especially now that Salah and Robertson have left.In our opinion, Liverpool can’t afford to offload their longest-serving current player just yet, and certainly not to a direct positional rival in Villa.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMO’Neill extends stay as Northern Ireland boss with four-year dealMichael O’Neill has signed a four-year contract to extend his stay as Northern Ireland boss just two weeks after turning down an offer from Blackburn Rovers.O’Neill, 56, finished the season juggling dual roles with Northern Ireland and Blackburn and entered talks with the English second-tier club over extending his stay at Ewood Park after guiding them to safety. But having turned down Rovers to stay in international football, O’Neill has finalized a deal with the Irish FA that runs until 2032.“This is a role that means a great deal to me,” O’Neill said in a statement on Wednesday.“I continue to believe strongly in the potential of this group of players and the direction we are moving in. There is a lot of work ahead, but I am excited by the future.”O’Neill is in his second spell as Northern Ireland boss, with a friendly draw against Wales in March his 104th match in charge. The highlight of his tenure was leading the nation into Euro 2016, and there are now genuine hopes that a young, talented squad is capable of returning to a major tournament at the Euros in two years’ time in the UK and Ireland.O’Neill’s commitment will be welcomed by the Irish FA, who had feared losing him for a second time when he accepted the role with Blackburn in February – an announcement that stunned many Northern Ireland fans as it came just a few weeks before their World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final against Italy, which they lost.O’Neill, first appointed as Northern Ireland boss in 2011, left for Stoke in early 2020, but returned to the role in 2022.Announcing the deal, IFA president Conrad Kirkwood said: “Michael has made a massive contribution to Northern Ireland so far. I am delighted that he will continue that work into the future and I look forward to more memorable achievements for the team in the future.”0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAnthony Gordon: Barcelona rock Man United with plan to sign Newcastle starAnthony Gordon: Barcelona rock Man United with plan to sign Newcastle starFC Barcelona have opened “club-to-club talks” with Newcastle United to sign Anthony Gordon in a double blow to Manchester United, Fabrizio Romano reveals.Another One Bites the DustManchester United are prioritising an overhaul of their midfield this summer. Casemiro‘s contract has expired, while Manuel Ugarte‘s poor performances will see him join the Brazilian through the exit door if a suitable offer arrives.Up to three new options are expected to arrive to fix the stalling engine room, with a deal advancing for Atalanta dynamo Ederson after United executives flew out to Bergamo this week. A host of other targets, including Nottingham Forest talisman Elliot Anderson and Real Madrid superstar Aurélien Tchouaméni, are also under consideration as United plan to invest up to £150 million in midfield. But reinforcements on the left-hand side are being considered as well, with options at left wing or fullback being explored. RB Leipzig breakout star Yan Diomande and Aston Villa wizard Morgan Rogers are the two leading candidates out wide, but prohibitive asking prices for both are likely to rule United out of the running.Gordon, Newcastle and England’s versatile 25-year-old attacker, is another long-term target at Old Trafford, with INEOS understood to “really like” the Merseyside native.United’s hierarchy are increasingly prioritising players with Premier League pedigree where possible, as the captures of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha last summer proved. Gordon fits this mould, while offering the age profile and work-rate INEOS want.Newcastle are increasingly open to Gordon’s sale this summer as the Magpies grapple with the need for an overhaul of Eddie Howe’s squad after a dismal season. The financial situation at St James’ Park means they will need to generate funds to do this — with the winger considered more expendable than players like Sandro Tonali and Lewis Hall, both also on the Red Devils’ radar. But United’s focus on midfield will drain the bulk of their summer war chest, leaving little left over for a big-money raid for a target like Gordon, even if his club is open to the deal. An option like Wolves starlet Mateus Mane may present a cheaper alternative.Double BlowOne key factor in United’s ability to spend big this summer is shifting the deadwood from Michael Carrick’s squad, including players not currently at the Theatre of Dreams, such as Marcus Rashford. The 28-year-old Carrington graduate joined Barcelona on a season-long loan last summer. A £26 million buy option was included in the deal, which the Spanish giant can trigger at any point up until 15 June.Despite 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions as Rashford helped them defend their LaLiga title, the Blaugrana have refused to pay up, instead trying to renegotiate the deal to strike a cheaper price or, preferably, another loan. United have steadfastly rejected these attempts, continuing to demand the terms of the original deal be honoured, or risk losing out on Rashford entirely, with a host of clubs in the Premier League interested in the England international. This makes Romano’s update that Barcelona have opened talks to sign Gordon so frustrating for the powerbrokers in M16. It simultaneously rules out an option to bolster Carrick’s forward line (Gordon), while majorly decreasing the likelihood they will be able to sell an unwanted player (Rashford).Tweet: “Barcelona are in direct club to club talks with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon. The player’s keen on the move but more clubs are also on it. This was the reason of Deco’s mission to the UK, as @mundodeportivo reports. Bayern and Premier League clubs are also keen.”Final ThoughtsUnited executives will undoubtedly be exasperated by the news that Barcelona have opened talks over a big-money move for Gordon, after months of protracted negotiations over a deal for Rashford at a fraction of the price Newcastle will demand. The fact that it will remove another highly-rated winger from the wish list at Old Trafford just pours salt on the wound, given Gordon is understood to be prioritising Camp Nou over alternative options elsewhere in Europe. online pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. APNEWS.COMBillionaire Tom Steyer’s ad spending breaks records in California governor’s raceTom Steyer speaks during a California gubernatorial debate hosted by CBS Bay Area and the San Francisco Examiner in San Francisco, Thursday, May 14, 2026. (AP Photo/Godofredo A. Vásquez, Pool)2026-05-27T04:06:39Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — Win or lose, billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer will leave a mark in the history books in his bid to become California’s next governor — he’s running the most expensive political advertising campaign in the country this year.Steyer — a former hedge fund manager turned liberal activist — has spent or booked more than $195 million in ads for broadcast TV, cable and radio with the tally still growing, according to data compiled by advertising tracker AdImpact. His torrent of ads have opened the one-time presidential candidate to criticism that he is trying to buy the governor’s chair, and his ad total represents more than 20 times the amount spent by his nearest rival, fellow Democrat Xavier Becerra, as the two duel for a spot in the November election. Nationally, no one is close. In Georgia, Republican health care executive Rick Jackson has spent about $83 million on advertising in his primary race for governor, which is headed for a June runoff, ranking him second. The third place spot is held by his Republican rival, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who has President Donald Trump’s endorsement and has spent nearly $31 million on ads, according to AdImpact.Following Jones was Democratic U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, who spent over $28 million on advertising in a failed bid for U.S. Senate. Trying to ‘buy the governor’s office?’Katie Porter, a former U.S. House member who is among seven established Democrats in the California race, has repeatedly criticized Steyer for dipping into his personal fortune to keep ads in front of voters with scant competition from rivals.“She isn’t spending hundreds of millions of dollars of personal wealth trying to buy the governor’s office,” her campaign wrote in an email to supporters. In raw numbers, Steyer ad blitz has eclipsed the 2010 record set by Republican Meg Whitman, who spent $178.5 million in total on a losing bid for governor, much of it her own money. At the time, it was the costliest campaign for statewide office in the nation’s history. When adjusted for inflation, however, Whitman still holds the state record, but that represented spending for the full election, not just the primary. A crowded field with no clear leaderSteyer’s record-level output has lifted him into contention in the crowded race but he’s not breaking away from the field. He’s among a leading group of several candidates — including Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton — as the campaign heads toward a June 2 primary. Mail voting started earlier this month.Still, Steyer’s cash advantage is giving him a publicity edge as the contest enters its crucial final days. He’s kept up a steady flow of advertising and online posts questioning Becerra’s credentials and record, with Becerra, a former state attorney general and Biden administration health secretary, lacking the funds to reply in kind. Read More One Becerra ad sought to connect with voters who might be getting bleary-eyed from the cascade of Steyer advertising. It used tranquil scenes of Joshua trees, waves curling on a beach and soaring redwoods with a gentle prod, “You can stop the endless Tom Steyer ads. Vote Xavier Becerra.” Steyer’s financial edge has allowed him to stretch the boundaries of his campaign far beyond traditional TV and radio ads, with steady posts on online platforms like YouTube and Instagram. The New York Times reported that his campaign paid a progressive Texas influencer $100,000 to help Steyer win the election. The Sacramento Bee reported that Becerra, too, had hired an influencer. Many voters have been slow to vote in a race without a star candidate and no clear leader. More than 50 names will be on the ballot. California uses a “top two” primary system that puts all candidates on one ballot, with only the top two vote-getters advancing to November, regardless of party.“In a race this close, it all matters,” said Democratic consultant Andrew Acosta.Money doesn’t always make the differenceHistory shows that money doesn’t always translate into votes.Billionaire developer Rick Caruso spent over $100 million in 2022 in his bid to become Los Angeles mayor, much of it his own money, but he was handily defeated by Mayor Karen Bass, who spent a fraction of Caruso’s total. Billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg spent more than $1 billion of his own money on his 2020 presidential bid before dropping out. And Steyer’s money was unable to lift him into contention in the 2020 presidential contest, when he dropped out early in the year after a poor finish in the South Carolina primary. Democratic San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s campaign for governor was supported by independent committees bankrolled with millions of dollars from tech leaders and venture capitalists, yet he failed to gain traction in the race.Steyer has never held elected office. In a 2019 interview with The Associated Press, Steyer was asked what he would say to people who think he’s trying to buy the presidency. “I don’t think that’s possible,” Steyer said at the time, before adding, “I’m never going to apologize for succeeding in business. That’s America, right?”The contest is unfolding as California struggles with a long-running homeless crisis, wildfire insurance shortages, projected budget shortfalls and housing costs that are out of reach for many working-class families. Voters, meanwhile, are saddled with growing everyday bills for groceries, utilities and gas.The AdImpact data does not include ads on some popular streaming services like Hulu and YouTube or mail advertising. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM🥹 Insigne, Mertens and Lavezzi together for charity! Goals at Maradona ❤️🥹 Insigne, Mertens and Lavezzi together for charity! Goals at Maradona ❤️The Maradona last night didn’t host a match. It hosted memories. “The Night of the Lions” was much more than a charity game; it was an Azzurri time machine. One after another, they all came back. Careca, Ferrara, Zola, Lavezzi, Cavani, Callejón, Insigne, Mertens. Different generations, same roar. Because in Naples time passes, but certain loves do not. The clash between “Napoli Legends and Friends” and “World Legends and Friends” had a truly important purpose: raising funds for the theater program at the Nisida juvenile detention center and for Naples’ Santobono hospital. In the stands, 47,000 showed up, while on the pitch there was only one watchword: nostalgia.🤩 Mertens, Insigne and Lavezzi: what a SHOW!When Insigne caressed the first few balls, for a moment the Maradona seemed to go back to the nights of curling free kicks and chants for 'Il Magnifico'. He repaid the crowd with assists and moments of magic, as well as a goal. Then there was the Pocho. And Lavezzi, as we know, never simply steps onto the pitch: he sparks something. The Argentine scored right away, and the crowd paid tribute with applause that took everyone back ten years. Everything the same. Everything frozen in time. Mertens, meanwhile, came onto the pitch to an ovation that was almost moving. Because there are players who stop belonging to football and start belonging directly to the city. Dries is one of them. In Naples last night, what mattered were the hugs, the laughter, the iconic shirts. Everything except the result, even though the "Napoli Legends" still won 8-7 thanks to their champions. One thing is certain: last night the Maradona looked less like a stadium and more like a huge blue family album. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMilan midfielder Modric could announce retirement after World CupMilan midfielder Modric could announce retirement after World CupLuka Modric is seriously considering retirement following the World Cup, with Milan’s failure to secure Champions League football and the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri combining to remove two of the key conditions the Croatian had set for continuing his playing career.According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via CalcioMercato, Modric will turn 41 in September and has always made clear he would only continue if the environment offered genuine competitive motivation. With Milan’s entire leadership structure dismantled and a project that must be rebuilt from the ground up, the prospect of a title challenge next season appears remote, far removed from the conditions the veteran midfielder had in mind.MILAN, ITALY – APRIL 26: Luka Modric of AC Milan is consoled by Massimiliano Allegri, Head Coach of AC Milan, as he is assisted off by medical staff after going down injured during the Serie A match between AC Milan and Juventus FC at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on April 26, 2026 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)Allegri exit accelerates Modric retirement thinking as Cardinale faces key decision at MilanThe situation is further complicated by Modric’s close bond with the outgoing coach. His relationship with Allegri was one of the primary reasons he had been open to staying, and the Tuscan’s departure removes a significant source of comfort and familiarity at the club.Milan do hold an option to extend his contract by one year beyond its June 30 expiry, and both Cardinale and Ibrahimovic are understood to be keen on keeping him.Whether they can persuade Modric to commit to another year in circumstances so different from those he had envisaged is far from certain. The World Cup in the United States this summer may ultimately serve as his farewell stage, a fitting backdrop for one of football’s greatest ever players to bring the curtain down on an extraordinary career.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSpurs Set for Ruthless Rebuild With Brighton Stars on RadarSpurs Set for Ruthless Rebuild With Brighton Stars on RadarRoberto De Zerbi Transfer Plan Signals Ambitious Tottenham RebuildTottenham’s survival has changed the mood, but it has not softened the scale of the task. As reported by The Independent, Roberto De Zerbi now appears intent on reshaping Spurs with urgency, familiarity and a very clear idea of what his football needs. The names tell their own story. Carlos Baleba, Jan Paul van Hecke and Bart Verbruggen are not random targets. They are players who understand the demands, rhythms and risks of a De Zerbi side. That matters at a club where drift has become almost cultural. Spurs do not need vague potential. They need players who can walk into a structure and immediately recognise the language.Brighton Core Could Accelerate De Zerbi VisionDe Zerbi’s desire to raid Brighton is entirely logical. Baleba offers the dynamism and press resistance that can make midfield feel less fragile. Van Hecke brings composure in possession and aggression without chaos. Verbruggen, meanwhile, would give Spurs a goalkeeper already fluent in the most dangerous part of De Zerbi’s football, playing through pressure.Photo IMAGOThe Independent reports that De Zerbi sees the Brighton trio as “his players”. That phrase feels revealing. This is not simply a shopping list. It is a search for trust. After arriving in what was described as a “Hail Mary” appointment in April, and somehow keeping Tottenham in the Premier League, De Zerbi has earned a measure of authority.Baleba Fee Highlights Tottenham AmbitionCarlos Baleba may be the hardest deal to complete, with Brighton reportedly wanting more than £100m and Manchester United also interested. That valuation is daunting, but it reflects the modern market. Midfielders who can carry, recover, pass and cope under pressure are rare.If Spurs are serious about backing De Zerbi, this is the level of investment required. Half measures have defined too many Tottenham rebuilds. They have bought promise, paused, hesitated, then wondered why the project has frayed.Leadership Search Feels SignificantInterest in Andy Robertson and John Stones may be even more revealing than the pursuit of younger targets. Spurs require technical ability, yes, but they also require adults in the room. Robertson, following his emotional departure from Liverpool, would bring ferocity, standards and a winning edge. Stones would offer calm, intelligence and elite experience.James Trafford and Marcos Senesi fit a similar theme. This is about building a squad capable of playing De Zerbi football, while surviving its storms.Vuskovic Decision Shows Longer Term PlanningLuka Vuskovic’s expected new deal, followed by another loan to Hamburg, feels sensible. His numbers in Germany, six Bundesliga goals, a 69.1 per cent duel success rate and Team of the Season recognition, suggest Spurs may already possess a future defensive pillar. For now, De Zerbi needs reliability. Tottenham have survived. Now they must decide whether they want merely to recover, or truly to become dangerous again. Our View – EPL Index AnalysisFrom a Spurs supporter’s perspective, this report should create excitement, with a little anxiety tucked underneath it. De Zerbi kept the club up, which still feels slightly surreal given how desperate things looked before his arrival.Baleba would be a statement signing, no doubt. More than £100m is huge money, especially with Manchester United circling, but Spurs have spent years needing a midfielder who can turn pressure into momentum. If De Zerbi wants him, supporters will ask why the club would hire such a demanding coach and then deny him the player who makes the system function.Verbruggen is interesting because Antonin Kinsky had his heroic moments, yet De Zerbi clearly wants a keeper who already understands the risks. That may feel harsh, but sentiment cannot drive a rebuild.Robertson is the one that really catches the eye. Spurs have lacked that relentless, demanding presence for too long. If he still has the legs, he has the personality. Stones would bring similar authority. The worry? Trying to sign half of Brighton rarely feels simple. But for once, Tottenham appear to have a manager with a defined plan. Supporters will take that.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

So in back to back games the Nationals have just decided to throw strikes. Normally, you’d worry about those strikes getting hit, but… lol.One Guardian who is not seeing strikes is Kyle Manzardo. Because why would you throw him a strike when he’s swinging at 3 pitches in the dirt every time he comes to the plate? For the second straight game, the Nats only needed to use 2 pitchers. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYesterday Match Result: Rajat Patidar's unbeaten 93 blows away GT as RCB win Qualifier 1DHARAMSALA: Fans turned up in numbers at the HPCA Stadium here on Tuesday for the first IPL qualifier, many of them hoping to watch a Virat Kohli masterclass. Kohli’s promising innings, however, was cut short by Jason Holder for 43. What the crowd got instead was a stunning exhibition of strokeplay from Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Rajat Patidar. Riding on their underrated captain’s unbeaten 93 off 33 balls, RCB steamrolled Gujarat Titans by 92 runs to march into their second successive IPL final.Patidar’s whirlwind knock, studded with five fours and nine sixes, took RCB to an imposing 254/5, the highest total in IPL playoff history. RCB then bowled Gujarat out for 162 in 19.3 overs. More than the light and sound show at the break, the Titans seemed to be reeling from Patidar’s fireworks when they came out to chase. Their innings got off to a poor start as Sai Sudharsan was hit wicket off Jacob Duffy for 14. Skipper Shubman Gill soon followed, bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for just two. Jos Buttler briefly threatened with a 11-ball 29, but once Josh Hazlewood removed him, Gujarat’s chase unravelled quickly.Wickets tumbled regularly as Titans lost half their side inside the Powerplay, reaching only 51/5 after six overs. From there, the match became a formality and they were eventually bowled out in the final over. Rahul Tewatia offered the lone resistance for the Titans with 68 off 43 balls. For RCB, Duffy claimed three wickets while Bhuvneshwar, Rasikh Salam Dar and Krunal Pandya picked up two each. When RCB batted, Patidar walked in with the stadium briefly stunned after Kohli’s dismissal in the ninth over. The RCB fans soon found their voice again as Patidar began depositing balls into the stands with ease. Capitalising on a life offered by Kagiso Rabada when he was on 21, Patidar tore into the Titans attack and added 95 for the fourth wicket with Krunal Pandya. The Titans did not help their cause as they were sloppy in the field, while their bowlers lost discipline in the end overs. The momentum shifted decisively in the 15th over, when Patidar and Krunal launched an assault on Kulwant Khejroliya. The left-arm seamer bowled two noballs and a wide in the over as Patidar and Krunal collected 28 runs. Though Krunal fell for 43 off 28 balls, Patidar carried on. He brought up his fifty in just 21 balls and shifted gears with ease as RCB scored 86 runs in the last five overs. Standing deep in his crease, Patidar sent yorker-length deliveries over the ropes and pulled short balls into the stands with clinical precision. 131341869After being put in to bat, Venkatesh Iyer gave RCB a flying start by striking three fours in Mohammed Siraj’s first over. At the other end, Rabada put Kohli in a spot of bother by beating him off the first three balls he faced with steep bounce. Iyer was in no mood to rein in his attacking instincts, but after scooping Rabada for six, he fell off the next ball for 19.Kohli then found his rhythm, hitting Rabada for two fours and a six in the final over of the Powerplay.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 39 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHere are scouting reports of Louisiana baseball's Starkville Regional opponentsThe only college baseball team from the boot state heading to the NCAA Tournament is the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, who earned an at-large bid to the Starkville Regionals. The Cajuns (39-22) earned the No. 3 seed for their 20th tournament appearance in program history. It was a rollercoaster of a season for seventh-year head coach Matt Deggs, with high highs and low lows throughout Sun Belt Conference and non-conference play. At one point, UL was ranked in the Top 25 and at another point they weren’t even among the Top 10 in the Sun Belt.Through it all, the Cajuns just kept pounding away, earning a spot in the SBC Championship game where they finished as runner-ups to Southern Mississippi. That hot run landed Deggs and his squad in a familiar regional, marking their first appearance in Starkville Regionals since 1997. The season will start all over again as the Cajuns’ journey to Omaha begins on May 29.Here's a look at the opponents the Cajuns will be facing to open the tournament:CincinnatiNickname: BearcatsConference: Big 12Record: 37-20Tournament Appearances Before 2026: 8Players to Watch: DH Enzo Infelise, P Nathan TaylorThe Bearcats finished the regular season on a sour note, only playing one game of the Big 12 Championship Tournament. Despite that, they finished ranked above the Cajuns at No. 24 according to D1 baseball rankings. Cincinnati has picked up notable wins against West Virginia, UCF, Kansas and Auburn. The Bearcats, similar to the Cajuns, have a core of elite freshmen in Connor Blue, Enzo Infelise and Ryan Tyranski. All three made the All-Big 12 Freshman team, with Infelise being named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year.Mississippi StateNickname: BulldogsConference: SECRecord: 40-17Tournament Appearances Before 2026: 41Players to Watch: DH Noah Sullivan, P Tomas ValinciusPlaying host for the weekend are the Bulldogs, who earned the No. 14 seed in the Regionals bracket. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPlayers with Philadelphia Union ties dot World Cup soccer rostersThe Philadelphia Union’s success in recent Major League Soccer seasons, including earning the 2020 and 2025 Supporters’ Shield with the league’s best record, results from a fertile youth development system. That’s also reflected on the United States’ World Cup roster. The U.S team includes four homegrown players who came up through the Union's youth academy before excelling in MLS, with three of them then moving to European clubs. They head this alphabetical list of former and present Union players who are on teams in the upcoming World Cup:Brenden AaronsonAaronsen, 25, is an attacking midfielder from Medford, New Jersey, and came up through the Union Academy. He first played on U.S. under-15 teams and starred for the Union in 2019 and 2020. He was runner-up in the 2019 MLS Rookie of the Year voting after exhibiting precocious playmaking and finishing skills. That led to a 2020 season in which he made the prestigious MLS Best XI. That earned him a move to Europe and Aaronsen has since played at Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, Leeds United in the English Premier League, Union Berlin in Germany and now back with Leeds United. He has nine goals and seven assists in 57 U.S. senior team appearances.Matt FreeseFreese, 27 and from Wayne. Pennsylvania, is the likely starter at goalkeeper for the U.S. He is the homegrown player who found his opportunities elsewhere after backing up Andre Blake, the Jamaican international who has been entrenched as the Union starter since 2016. Freese, who also played two years at Harvard, has seen his career blossom since moving to New York City FC in 2023. He didn't make his senior U.S. team debut until 2025 but has seemed to move ahead of 2012 World Cup starter Matt Turner as the preferred shot-stopper. Danley Jean JacquesJacques, 26, is a midfielder now in his third season with the Union who is a key player for Haiti. He started his pro career in Haiti before moving to a French team, Metz. He then moved to the Union, where he has scored three goals in 44 career games. Jacques has played for Haiti teams going back to his under-17 years. He has been with its senior team since 2023 and has scored six goals in 29 games.Olwethu MakhanyaMakhanya is the other present Union player who could see 2026 World Cup duty, as he was named to South Africa’s preliminary 32-man roster, which will be cut to 26. Just 22, Makhanya is a defender who signed with the Union in 2023 after a promising start to his pro career back home. He played for Union II his first two years here but has been a Union regular the past two years, making 36 starts.Mark McKenzieMcKenzie’s family moved from New York City to Delaware when he was 5, and he has proceeded to become the state’s most accomplished soccer player in history. The defender came up through the Union youth system and was signed to the first team in 2018. McKenzie started for three years for the Union, making Major League Soccer’s Best XI in 2020 when he was also runner-up in its Defender of the Year voting. In 2021 he signed with Belgian First Division club Genk and in 2024 moved to Toulouse in France’s Ligue One. McKenzie played on the U.S. under-20 side before making his senior team debut in 2020. He has appeared in 27 games for the United States.Jamito MonteiroMonteiro plays for Cape Verde, an island nation off the west coast of Africa. The 32-year-old midfielder has played a key role in his national team’s ascent, having scored five goals in 49 games in 10 years. Monteiro, who was born in the Netherlands to parents who were from Cape Verde, played for the Union from 2019-21, getting nine goals in 75 games. He now plays for PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie, the top league in the Netherlands.Auston TrustyTrusty is a central defender from Media, Pennsylvania, and also came up through the Union youth ranks. He made his Union debut in 2017 and played in 56 games over three seasons before a trade to MLS’ Colorado Rapids. He moved overseas in 2022 and has played with Birmingham City and Sheffield United in the English Championship and is now with Scottish giant Celtic. Here is what you need to know about the matchup between the two squads, with the 3A title game kicking off the second day of the WPIAL baseball championships. When is the WPIAL 3A high school baseball championship? The WPIAL 3A high school baseball championship is at EQT Park in Washington, Pa. on Wednesday, May 27 at 1 p.m.What’s at stake?Beaver County has had a stranglehold on the Class 3A championship game, sending a school to the championship game five of the last six seasons. For the past three seasons, Riverside has reached the championship game, winning two of those games, most recently in 2025 when Zach Hare threw a perfect game in the 1-0 win over Quaker Valley. But this season, it will be Ellwood City in the championship game, looking to win its first district championship since 2012 when it defeated Riverside 9-7 for the 2A title. As for South Park, it is back in the championship game for the first time since 2022, when it won its second WPIAL title in program history with an 11-1 win over Mohawk. Last season, it fell to Riverside in the WPIAL semifinals and again in the PIAA semifinals. After a strong showing against No. 14 Ligonier Valley in the opening round, Ellwood City came back twice against No. 11 Burrell in the quarterfinals, erasing a one-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a two-run deficit in the seventh. Senior Jake Biskup sent Ellwood City to the semifinals with a single into center field to score Gino Biondi. Then in the semifinals against rival Riverside, the Wolverines once again erased a pair of deficits, most notably a three-run hole in the sixth inning when the team stormed back to take a 6-5 lead. Gino Biondi hit a two-RBI single to drive in Geordon Bokor and Dom Hogue. Nate Kennedy pitched a complete game for Ellwood City, allowing five runs on 10 hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. As for South Park, it has been another strong season for the program, with ace Cooper Hochendoner leading the charge. The senior southpaw kicked off the team’s playoff run with a no-hitter against Keystone Oaks in the 3-0 win. The team would then go on to handle business in the quarterfinals against Freeport 4-1, followed by an upset win over top-seeded Avonworth, 5-2 in the semifinals.
