Marcus Rashford: What’s The Feeling Inside Camp Following Anthony Gordon’s Barcelona Move?
Is there a way for both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon to co-exist at Barcelona?PA Images via Getty ImagesMarcus Rashford’s FC Barcelona future is further under threat by the €80 million ($93.3 million) arrival of England teammate Anthony Gordon before the weekend. On June 30, Rashford’s loan deal expires meaning he will return to Manchester United if Barça don’t activate his €30 million ($35 million) buy option before said date. There have been plenty of reports about Flick telling Rashford and the club that he wants the Mancunian in his 2026/2027 squad after a La Liga-winning return of 14 goals and 14 assists last term.It all comes down to money at a club like Barca, though, which might have returned to making the big signings of yesteryear but is also battling to return to the 1:1 rule under Financial Fair Play limits.Gordon’s FC Barcelona arrival isn’t a surprise for Marcus RashfordThere’s already a case made for Rashford working out cheaper than Gordon in the long run because of the former’s huge wages despite a €50 million ($58 million) difference in their transfer fees.Yet according to Mundo Deportivo, the feeling in the Rashford camp is that Gordon’s arrival doesn’t change anything. His camp says that it already knew Barca would sign his Three Lions teammate and therefore he hasn’t been affected by it. He isn’t giving up his Catalan dream, and still prioritizes staying with his temporary employers above all.Furthermore, despite them sharing the same position on the left wing, Gordon for Rashford can’t be seen as a like-for-like swap.Providing an excellent assist there for Robert Lewandowski during a key win over Alaves recently, we’ve also seen Rashford excel on the right where Lamine Yamal has been injured as of late and Roony Bardghji has struggled to make the role his own.Lewandowski departs on the same day Rashford’s loan deal ends as well, meaning there’s a vacant number 9 spot though that could be filled by Julian Alvarez.Barça made a €100 million ($116 million) offer to Atletico Madrid for the Argentine on the same day Gordon was unveiled. But it’s believed that the Catalans will have to up their bid to get their man. Back to Marcus Rashford, however, a much lower price tag for a multifunctional player and established international already familiar with Hansi Flick’s system seems like a good opportunity to pass up if he can considerably lower his salary demands. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Tony Parker reveals why Gregg Popovich chose Boris Diaw over Tim Duncan in the final second of Finals Game 7
Bibi: Exactly. LeBron misses his shot, the Spurs play the possession, and I have someone next to me who was not only on the floor, but also on the bench and may have some insight. One of the best rebounders in NBA history is not on the floor. The Spurs are playing smaller. I understand it was to defend the three-point line, but— Tony Parker: It was to defend the switch. It was not to defend the three-point line. It was to defend the switch. Pop preferred having Boris for the switch rather than Tim. After that, with coaching choices, you never really know. That has been said and repeated. It is clear that most people would have preferred Duncan to be on the floor. But as a player, with things like that, you never know. It is difficult.YouTubeThis article originally appeared on Hoops Hype: Tony Parker reveals why Gregg Popovich chose Boris Diaw over Tim Duncan in the final second of Finals Game 7

Oleksandra Oliynykova will not separate her Grand Slam success from advocacy for Ukraine
PARIS — First you notice the body art.Stars across the cheeks. Piercings in the upper lower lip. Tattoos on her neck and chest and down her left arm. Then, Oleksandra Oliynykova’s game captures the imagination, a throwback approach that mixes moonballs and slices and drop shots, making her powerful putaways and searing attacks even more striking. Then the 25-year-old from Ukraine starts speaking about Russia’s invasion of her country, and the impact it has had on her, her family, her people, and her sport, and the full force of her fearlessness comes through.During this year’s Australian Open, Oliynykova directly criticized leading tennis players, including Belarusian world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and 2021 U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev. She described them as “dangerous people,” and has continued to level broadsides at figures in her sport who, she says, engaged with or praised state-sponsored activities, or the leaders of the Russian and Belarusian governments.“I want peace, and if I could change anything, I would definitely do that,” Sabalenka said in a news conference. Medvedev said he respected Oliynykova’s views, which have placed her at the intersection of sports and free speech. In late April, Oliynykova said in social media posts that the WTA Tour had “threatened” her with “fines of tens of thousands of dollars” and disqualification from tournaments for criticising specific players.“I will continue to speak as things are. I will not let them break me, and I will not let them silence me. In the end, I simply cannot accept this level of pressure and censorship — because then I see no point,” she wrote. In a statement on Oliynykova’s allegations, a WTA spokesperson said via email that “the WTA recognizes that the ongoing war in Ukraine continues to have a profound and deeply personal impact on many of our athletes. We remain unequivocal in condemning Russia’s war on Ukraine and have consistently supported our Ukrainian players since the start of the conflict.“This is an extraordinarily sensitive situation, and we understand players will have strong personal views. All WTA athletes have the right to express themselves. At the same time, the WTA is committed to maintaining a professional and respectful environment for all athletes, regardless of nationality or country of origin. Our Code of Conduct exists to uphold this standard consistently across the Tour.”“I don’t care about their opinions,” Oliynykova, one of the only players from Ukraine who still lives and trains there, said of anyone who criticizes her outspokenness, in an interview following her second-round French Open win over Kimberly Birrell of Australia Thursday.“I just want to stay alive and I want to bring attention to Ukraine and to the things these people are doing so we can finish this war faster, in the fair way.”During the French Open, Oliynykova has adorned her racquet bag with the triton symbol of the Ukraine army, and another with the flag of Ukraine. On the second, she also has a white-red-white flag, a historical flag of the Belarusian Democratic Republic which is now used as a symbol by separatist movements in the country. Oliynykova said that her father, Denis Oliynik, who serves as her coach and also in a volunteer with Ukraine’s army, has been part of those movements too.At the end of her post-match news conference on Thursday, Oliynykova pointed to the patch and explained its meaning for the video recording.“I’m still wearing it, I’m bringing this on my matches here,” she said, saying that officials had told her she could not use it. “I’m playing for my values.”The WTA rulebook states that logos, slogans and symbols associated with political movements are not permitted for display before, during and after matches. The Grand Slam rulebook does not include a provision. For Oliynykova, that was a relatively benign moment compared with a few minutes before. Oliynykova’s fourth-round opponent is Diana Shnaider, a young Russian who played in a tennis exhibition sponsored by Gazprom, the Russian energy magnate that has supported the Russian war effort, toward the end of last year.Oliynykova went after Shnaider once again Thursday.“The Gazprom tournament is a company which is financing the war crimes” she said.“I think it’s the same as playing in Nazi Germany for Gestapo officers, on the tournament organized by company which built Auschwitz. There is no difference for me.”A representative of Shnaider, and officials at the FFT and WTA Tour, did not respond to messages seeking comment on Oliynykova’s statements nor whether she had violated rules with the patches on her bag, but a member of her team met with WTA Tour communications Friday afternoon. In January at the Australian Open, when Oliynykova initially criticized Shnaider’s participation in the Gazprom event and expressing support on social media for what she described as Russian propaganda, Shnaider defended her decision to participate.“We’ve been on tour for the whole year, and I rarely see my family, rarely being home, so my only motivation is to be playing in St. Petersburg is just to visit my family, to show some great tennis for my fans who have been following us through the year, rooting for us and supporting us,” Shnaider said in a news conference. “If I have this opportunity, I’m taking it.”Through her advocacy, Oliynykova has been riding a late-bloom rise into middle of the top 100. She’s currently the world No. 65, though that’s up significantly from well outside the top 200 a year ago. Her two wins at the French Open this week were her first at a Grand Slam. Her father said it has been a two-year process of growing up and gaining the necessary patience. Not just to harness the power of her main motivation to succeed, but to play with her unique style, which demands intense concentration and discipline.“She has a stronger motivation than any player, he said in an courtside interview after her second-round win.“Also, her style requires growth. She plays tennis. Most other players these days hit tennis, not play. The big serve and then the forehand.”Oliynykova can do some of that, but more often she is attempting to beguile opponents with her variety. She hit underarm serves — a rarity in tennis and especially the women’s game — on match point two consecutive matches. One worked, the other didn’t.“For me, it’s nothing special,” she said. Her outspokenness has also become a kind of soundtrack to success in Ukrainian women’s tennis, which has been going on all spring and has continued at this tournament. Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina have won three tournaments, including the two at the highest level outside the Grand Slams, the WTA 1000s in Madrid and Rome. Those two, plus Oliynykova and Yuliia Starodubtseva, gave Ukraine four players in the last 32. All of players still have family in Ukraine. Kostyuk and Svitolina won Friday to make the last 16, while Starodubtseva, who beat world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the previous round, lost a tight duel to Wang Xiyu of China.A graduate of Old Dominion University, Va., Starodubtseva has not been home since the start of the war. Her mother has moved to Ireland and her sister is playing college tennis at Louisiana Tech University. Her father and grandparents live in what is at the moment Russian-occupied territory.“It’s hard to balance both lives,” she said in an interview Friday. She and Kostyuk both said they are behind Oliynykova in her statements about the war.“I fully agree with everything she says,” Kostyuk said of Oliynykova after beating Viktorija Golubic in straight sets, for her 15th consecutive win.“It’s something that, you know, she feels like she should be doing, I’m fully supportive of this. I don’t think she says anything bad about anyone. She’s usually just talking about facts and what actually happened, which I don’t think it’s ever a bad thing.”Kostyuk still talks about her country’s plight, but no longer leads with it, as she did in the first 18 months after the 2022 invasion. She found it too straining, with the emotional weight of competing with the war front and center in her mind knocking her off course. After her first-round win in Paris, she said that a missile had landed ”100 meters” from her parents’ home in Kyiv just hours before.“I really couldn’t do it back then, I could not separate it,” she said of Oliynykova. “And she’s doing it, and congrats. I mean, it’s very impressive.”Oliynykova said that so far, it’s no problem for her.“It’s a lot of motivation for me to be here, to speak, and to do the best I can for my country, for my people,” she said.“For me, tennis is just a game.”This article originally appeared in The Athletic.Culture, Tennis, Women's Tennis2026 The Athletic Media Company

IPL captaincy churn: Rishabh Pant steps down, Hardik Pandya may be on way out
IPL-2026 isn’t over yet, but heads have already begun to roll at franchises that fared disastrously this year. On Friday, Rishabh Pant stepped down as captain of Lucknow Super Giants, which finished at the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya's tumultuous tenure as Mumbai Indians skipper is set to come to an end after the five-time champs finished second-last.In fact, the all-rounder wants to leave MI and could be traded to another franchise when the trading window opens, according to a reliable source. Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders are potential destinations for him, though other franchises could also be interested.LSG had made Pant captain after bidding Rs 27 crore for him, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. On the other hand, MI stirred a controversy when they brought Hardik back to their fold from Gujarat Titans and named him captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, then India’s captain across all three formats.Unfortunately for both Pant and Pandya, the poor results of the teams coincided with their own indifferent personal form. After two below-par seasons, Pant decided to call it a day. LSG director Tom Moody announced on social media that Pant had requested the franchise to relieve him of captaincy duties.“Rishabh approached the franchisee with this request and we have respectfully accepted it,” Moody was quoted as saying in the media release. “These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on collective rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” the statement added.TOI understands that Pant wants to focus on cricket with a crucial international season coming up. He was also recently removed as Test vicecaptain, besides being dropped from the ODI side after spending two years on the bench with Team India.“Pant wants to have a clear head going forward. He has staged many strong comebacks in his career. At the moment, his focus is to be the best cricketer that he can be and help his team win. A good international season can help his confidence going into the next IPL. He had bounced back from a poor IPL last year and had a stellar Test series in England. The LSG management believes if he can regain that momentum, that may help him going forward,” sources close to the development told TOI . “It’s better for both the franchise and Pant to take some time out and calm down before planning for the next season,” sources added.A formal announcement of Hardik's exit as MI captain may also not be too long in coming. “Yes, Hardik is done with MI and is exiting the franchise. He has had enough. He could either go to Delhi Capitals, who could trade their captain and India leftarm spinner Axar Patel for him, or he could be traded to KKR against Cameron Green or Varun Chakravarthy or Rinku Singh. However, don't rule out some other franchise being interested in him," a source told TOI on Friday.Another source revealed that "During a mid-season review, a senior player suggested that India's young batter Tilak Varma, who has been with MI for a few years now, is the ideal person to be appointed captain next year. However, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav and pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who made his IPL captaincy debut for MI this season in one game, are also MI captaincy candidates. The management is also likely to phase out a senior batter and give him a ‘different’ role. Basically, MI need a reset, and that refresh button needs to be pressed as soon as possible," the source told TOI .While both Surya and Bumrah could be strong candidates, Surya's prolonged lean patch and the need to manage Bumrah's workload would have to be considered before a final call. The buzz is that Pandya and Pant may not be the only two IPL captains who could end up losing their crowns. Some other captains may also face tough questions from disappointed managements. 131406686

OGC Nice criticise Marseille in Grégory Lorenzi saga
OGC Nice criticise Marseille in Grégory Lorenzi sagaOGC Nice look to have won the race to sign former Stade Brestois sporting director Grégory Lorenzi. The Corsican even signed a contract with Le Gym but then ultimately ended up joining Olympique de Marseille, as confirmed this week.Speaking in a mixed zone interview attended by Get French Football News, Nice co-president Jean-Pierre Rivere evoked the saga and didn’t hold back in his criticism of OM. Lorenzi goes back on his word and signs with OM“We negotiated with Grégory for many long weeks so that he would come to Nice. There was also Marseille in the race. I was at the match (against OM on 26th April). At the hotel, it was agreed that on Monday morning, at the latest, we would make a decision. He (Lorenzi) phoned me on Sunday afternoon to say: ‘I have made my decision. I had a family meeting, during my parents’ 45-year wedding anniversary. I am joining you.’ I told him that I was happy. I asked him if he was sure of his decision because I understood that OM were in a different dimension. He responded: ‘You have my word. I am joining you.’ In advance, I told Florian Maurice (current SD), with whom there is great harmony,” began the Nice co-president, who confirmed that he would be leaving the club after they ensured their safety in Ligue 1 thanks to a 4-1 win over AS Saint-Étienne on Friday night. He continued, “We took a week to sign the contract, with a clause that said that, if we were relegated to Ligue 2, there was a possibility to pull out. 15 days later, he calls me asking to see me. I read it in the press and understood that Marseille had come back into the frame. He comes to my office and says, ‘I’m sorry to do this president; it is the first time that this has happened, but I am going to go back on my word. I am choosing Marseille.’ For us, it wasn’t neutral.”Lorenzi resigns from OGC Nice role“I said I would call him back. I should have done it earlier, but I didn’t do it because I thought that Marseille would respect the contract that we signed with him. I told Greg that I understood, that there was pressure from OM. Marseille know full well that we have a contract with him. Despite that, they announced that Greg Lorenzi would be their new sporting director. We won’t look to retain him, but OM know that we have signed a contract and we need to be able to talk about it because this isn’t what you do. I honestly thought that Marseille were talking with him in the event that we were relegated to Ligue 2. I think that they have signed a contract with him. We will talk with OM.”“He has resigned, but there is a notice period, and then for us, there are financial repercussions that are not negligible. The other club could have taken precautions and called us to see if we had a contract.”GFFN | Luke Entwistle – reporting from Nice

There are a lot more teams that have motivation to go …
Ramona Shelburne: "I think as much grief as the Milwaukee Bucks took for not trading Giannis Antetokounmpo the last year and a half, this postseason has completely reframed the trade discussions for Giannis because of how good Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs are. Every single person watching these playoffs says, maybe we better get Giannis. Maybe we need that guy. I don't know how we're going to compete with the Spurs for the next five to 10 years if we don't have another star like Giannis. There are a lot more teams that have motivation to go trade for a Giannis Antetokounmpo to try to compete with the San Antonio Spurs and this looming giant who is going to dominate the league for the next 10 years."YouTubeThis article originally appeared on Hoops Hype: There are a lot more teams that have motivation to go …

I would expect him to opt out of that contract and …
Bobby Marks: "Harden's in a unique situation. He's got a $42 million player option and there's only $13 million of that guaranteed. So if Harden did opt in, Cleveland could certainly waive him and save a ton of money here. I would expect him to opt out of that contract and both sides to negotiate a a little bit of a longer contract, whether it be two years. And why opting out makes the most sense is that that would put Cleveland potentially under the second apron. If you drop 42 to let's say 30, that puts them under the second apron and gives them some flexibility moving forward with with Harden there."YouTubeThis article originally appeared on Hoops Hype: I would expect him to opt out of that contract and …

Does Caffeine Work Differently For Women? What New Research Shows
Caffeine has long been one of the most studied performance-enhancing (aka ergogenic) aids in sports science. But the vast majority of that research has been conducted on men. Of course... Does it hold up the same way for women? A new systematic review and meta-analysis is working to change that, taking a focused look at how caffeine affects athletic performance specifically in women who play intermittent sports, and whether the menstrual cycle plays any role in those effects.About the studyThe researchers set out to determine whether caffeine supplementation improves performance outcomes in female athletes competing in intermittent sports, and to explore (for the first time in a systematic way) whether those effects differ depending on where a woman is in her menstrual cycle.Women's sex hormones (like estrogen and progesterone) fluctuate in a relatively predictable pattern during the menstrual cycle. Estrogen peaks during the follicular phase, a time when many women feel more energized and strong. It's also an anabolic hormone, which means it helps build muscle and bone. Progesterone, on the other hand, peaks during the luteal phase, and many women report feeling more fatigued during this window. Progesterone has been shown to have catabolic effects on protein metabolism (which means muscle protein breakdown could be higher during this time). Based on this, it's reasonable to think that caffeine may impact the body differently across these phases. For this analysis, researchers included 9 studies with a combined 118 female athletes across intermittent sports including handball, volleyball, and basketball. Six of those studies contributed data to the meta-analysis. Performance outcomes measured included vertical jump height, agility, and sprint speed. Caffeine doses across the included studies ranged from 3 to 6 milligrams per kilogram of body mass, taken approximately 60 minutes before exercise.Caffeine sharpened agility & explosive powerThe meta-analysis found that caffeine supplementation significantly improved two of the three performance outcomes measured. Agility improved, and vertical jump height improved, both considered small-to-moderate effects. Sprint performance, however, showed no significant effect. However, the non-significant sprint finding is still worth paying attention to. Sprinting is a highly anaerobic, fast-twitch-dominant effort, and the mechanisms through which caffeine typically helps (adenosine receptor blockade, improved neuromuscular signaling) may not translate as cleanly to maximal short-burst efforts as they do to agility and power tasks. It's also possible that the limited number of studies and small sample sizes reduced the statistical power to detect a sprint effect, even if one exists. What the follicular phase data actually tells usWithin-phase subgroup analyses suggested that agility improvements were more pronounced in trials conducted during the follicular phase (the first half of the cycle, when estrogen is rising). Luteal-phase effects were less consistent. This aligns with what research on women and muscle gains has also found — that the follicular phase may represent a window of heightened physical responsiveness for some women. That said, the between-group comparison showed no statistically significant difference between phases, and the researchers were careful to note the limitations of this data. None of the 9 included studies verified menstrual cycle phase through hormonal testing. All of them relied on calendar tracking or self-reported cycle apps. That's a meaningful methodological gap. Without confirmed hormonal status, it's difficult to draw firm conclusions about phase-specific effects. The researchers acknowledged that the evidence base is too small and too methodologically limited to support cycle-specific caffeine recommendations at this time.RELATED READ: Craving More Energy But Want Less Caffeine? Try This For A Jitter-Free BoostHow women can use this informationThe clearest takeaway from this review is that caffeine is a legitimate ergogenic aid for women in intermittent sports, particularly for agility and explosive power like vertical jump. For athletes in sports like basketball, volleyball, or handball, where quick directional changes and jump height matter, caffeine supplementation at the doses studied (3–6 mg/kg body mass, taken about 60 minutes before activity) appears to offer a real performance edge. That's about 190–380 milligrams of caffeine for someone weighing 140 pounds — a decent amount, and one that may not mesh well with everyone's tolerance. As for cycle syncing caffeine intake, the current evidence doesn't support firm recommendations about timing supplementation to a specific phase. Women who are curious about this can experiment with tracking their own responses across their cycle, but should do so with the understanding that the science isn't there yet to say one phase is definitively better than another.TakeawayThe fact that this review could only identify 9 eligible studies with 118 total participants speaks to how little research has been done on female athletes in this space. That gap is slowly closing, and studies like this one are an important step toward sports nutrition guidance that actually reflects women's physiology. If you're looking for performance and recovery without that much caffeine, then consider a creatine supplement. Women swear by this one for building muscle and strength without the bloat.

Texas A&M's starting pitcher on Saturday night is still undetermined
Texas A&M kicked off the College Station Regional on Friday afternoon against Lamar, looking to earn its first postseason win since the magical 2024 season, but it didn't come easy. Trailing 5-0 going into the fifth frame, junior first baseman Gavin Grahovac started things off with a solo home run, which served as one of six Aggie hits on the day, followed by Chris Hacopian's two-run home run that cut the lead to two. Thanks to pitchers Gavin Lyons and elite closer Clayton Freshcorn for coming through in relief after Shane Sdao allowed all five runs, Lamar was held scoreless for the rest of the game, while freshman third baseman Nico Partida's bases-loaded walk tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the 7th. Taking back momentum, Texas A&M took its first and final lead of the game after Lamar's error, resulting in Travis Chesnut's bunt attempt scoring Ben Royo. After Chesnut scored on another throwing error, Freshcorn shut down the Cardinals in the final two frames, as the Aggies head into the winner's bracket and will await to face the winner of Texas State vs. USC.While Shane Sdao was announced as the starting pitcher on Thursday, coach Michael Earley stated after Friday's win that he has yet to make a final decision on who will take the mound on Saturday, spurring more speculation surrounding star sophomore LHP Aiden Sims, who has been sidelined for the last four games with reported "tightness" without a clear update. However, Sims could return tomorrow night, depending on who wins Friday night's game between Texas State and USC, which will determine Earley's final decision. Texas A&M will face Texas State on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. CT.Texas A&M baseball coach Michael Earley said he has not yet made a decision on who will start on the mound tomorrow night. Mike Bianchi: Kyle Busch’s death exposes the ignorance of Stephen A. Smith’s NASCAR rant
ORLANDO, Fla. — Last week, NASCAR lost one of its giants.Kyle Busch, the winningest driver in the history of his sport, died after complications from bacterial pneumonia led to sepsis. He was only 41 years old.Yet even as his body was betraying him and even as he was experiencing symptoms of bacterial pneumonia for “days to weeks” before sepsis set in, Busch kept doing what racers do. He kept racing. He competed at Watkins Glen while feeling sick. He won a Truck Series race at Dover and raced in the All-Star Race just days before his death. He was still preparing for the Coca-Cola 600 and was testing in Chevrolet’s simulator on May 20 when he became unresponsive. He died the following day.And that is why bombastic ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith’s tired claim that race-car drivers are not athletes lands with such breathtaking ignorance.“Come on, man. That don’t count. You driving a car!” Smith scoffed recently when discussing why he doesn’t consider NASCAR drivers to be athletes. “You can drive a car at 75 years old.”Driving a car? That’s all he thinks they’re doing?Really?Seriously?Kyle Busch was coughing, sick and struggling physically, yet he still climbed into a race car because that’s what NASCAR drivers do. They don’t sit out because they’re tired. Unlike NBA players, they don’t embrace “load management.” Unlike pro golfers, they don’t take a week off because the schedule is inconvenient. No, they go to work because fans, sponsors and TV networks pay them to put on a show. And the show must go on.So they race no matter what. And that’s what makes Stephen A. Smith’s comments so insulting. Not because they’re controversial. Not because they’re provocative. But because they’re so profoundly stupid. It’s easy to sit behind a microphone in a climate-controlled studio and dismiss race-car drivers as non-athletes who merely “drive a car.” Come on, Stephen A., you’re better than that. Do you know how hard it is to climb into a 3,500-pound missile traveling 190 mph inches away from 39 other missiles and spend three hours knowing that one mistake, one blown tire, one mechanical failure can change your life forever? And if you want to talk about athleticism, endurance, heart rate, former NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick, in response to Smith’s comments, told the story recently of how he once wore a monitor that tracked calories burned during races. One event showed he burned more than 3,200 calories. The company thought the device was malfunctioning and sent him a replacement. The next week he burned 2,400 calories.“The only (athletes) we see with that much of a calorie burn and constant heart rate are marathon runners,” Harvick said. It’s no secret, the heat inside a race car can exceed 120 degrees and drivers can lose 10 to 15 pounds of water weight during a race. Their heart rates remain elevated for hours. They absorb relentless G-forces while maintaining concentration that cannot lapse for even a split second. One mistake doesn’t mean striking out.It could mean checking out.For good. The truth is NASCAR drivers don’t just compete against other drivers. They compete against fear, fate and mortality.Every.Single.Week.Basketball players don’t have to write a will before tipoff. Golfers don’t kiss their families goodbye before walking to the first tee wondering if they’ll make it home. NASCAR drivers understand the risks every time they fasten the belts and pull down the window net. That reality was never far from Kyle Busch’s mind. He grew up in a sport that buried Dale Earnhardt, Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin and countless others. He knew exactly what could happen every time he rolled onto a racetrack. And yet he raced.Even while sick.Even while struggling to breathe.Even while his body was fighting a battle he didn’t fully understand. Why?Because racers are wired differently. They don’t see racing as something they do. They see it as who they are.The greatest evidence that NASCAR drivers are athletes isn’t found in a fitness test or a heart-rate monitor. It’s found in the simple fact that they always get back in the car.Ernest Hemingway understood this decades ago when he famously wrote: “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”That quote isn’t literally true, of course, but it captures something profound. Most athletes compete against opponents.Race-car drivers compete against opponents while simultaneously battling physics, speed, exhaustion and the possibility of catastrophe.Every time they strap into a stock car traveling nearly 200 mph, they are accepting risks most professional athletes never have to contemplate.Ryan Preece said it best when responding to Smith’s comments:“I’d love for him to go tumbling 13 times, have black eyes, and show up next week doing what you gotta do.”Exactly.Because that’s what racers do.They show up next week.Richard Petty once raced with a broken neck.Ricky Rudd famously drove with his eyes swollen shut after a violent crash, taping them open with duct tape so he could see.Dale Earnhardt climbed into a race car with a broken collarbone and a dislocated sternum. And Kyle Busch himself won his first Cup championship in 2015 after suffering a broken right leg and a broken left ankle in a terrifying crash at Daytona. The culture of NASCAR has always been different. The week after Dale Earnhardt was killed at Daytona and drivers were getting to race at Rockingham, N.C., I wrote: “In racing, there is no sick leave, no bereavement period. You cry, you mourn. And you race.”Even if you’re Ken Schrader, the first man to reach Earnhardt’s car after the crash who discovered Dale motionless and slumped over the steering wheel. Even if you’re Dale Earnhardt Jr., who raced on the week after his dad died.I remember talking to former driver Kenny Wallace, who was getting ready to race at Rockingham that week after Earnhardt’s death, and I asked him why he did what he did.“We’re a different breed,” Wallace said. “We’re like F-18 fighter pilots. We know we’re going into combat. We know we could die. And we still get in the car.”Even former Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher understood what makes NASCAR drivers unique.Years ago, while he was serving as grand marshal at Daytona’s Coke Zero 400, Fisher expressed admiration for their toughness and reliability.“In NASCAR, they’re going to drive whether there’s rain, snow or sleet,” Fisher said. “You know, these guys are going to show up and race every week. That’s why many of us are such huge fans.”It seems Jimbo understood something Stephen A. does not.You see, Jimbo understood that Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt and NASCAR’s other amazing athletes literally love their sport to death.

Barcelona youngster receives key messages of affirmation from club and country
Barcelona youngster receives key messages of affirmation from club and countryMarc Bernal was always very highly rated in La Masia, and Barcelona have always seen him as a key part of the long-term project. An unfortunate knee injury just when he was getting started with his senior career, however, kept him out of action for 345 days and saw him spend a long time away from the field. This season, in that sense, was dedicated to helping him regain his rhythm and confidence. Barring an untimely injury around the time of Barcelona’s game against Atletico Madrid in the UCL, he largely delivered with high quality and consistency.Messages of affirmationAs reported by SPORT, Bernal could not have asked for a more optimistic scenario to end the season with as he has received strong messages of affirmation not only from Hansi Flick at Barcelona but also from Luis de La Fuente from the Spain national team.Bernal enjoys Flick’s complete trust. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)At the club level, Hansi Flick handed him minutes in all five of Barcelona’s games after his return until the end of the season. In the final three games, he was a starter and played almost the entire game. That, coupled with the overall prominence he enjoyed during the season, shows Bernal that he is loved by the manager and a critical part of his plans for next season despite Gavi’s return adding competition. On Spain’s radarThe second message of affirmation the youngster has earned is from the Spanish National Team. While De la Fuente did not include the player in Spain’s final World Cup squad, he has taken him as part of the support group accompanying the squad for the training camp.De la Fuente has called Bernal up for World Cup preparations. (Photo by Levan Verdzeuli/Getty Images)The player, thus, will be with the La Roja camp until June 4th and train and experience the atmosphere of the senior national team just ahead of the World Cup.His inclusion in such a call-up, needless to say, confirms that he is on De la Fuente’s radar and that he could well be with the senior Spain team in future tournaments. All in all, the trust shown by both managers is a signal to Bernal that he is on the right track and that next season can be massive for him.

Dan Campbell updates Detroit Lions' key injuries
With the Detroit Lions in the midst of OTAs, head coach Dan Campbell met with the media and addressed a number of topics. That included the Lions' group of injured stars: tight end Sam LaPorta and safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. Campbell confirmed that the trio weren't taking part in Lions OTAs."That's not the priority. And it's not worth all that anyway. Now LaPorta has taken some walkthrough, jog through, he's done some of that. He's not going to be out there today..."Listen, the most important thing is continuing to let them improve, rehab, all that. That'll take precedence right now. So, they're in meetings. They're getting the mental side of this and just take it day-to-day," Campbell said.Joseph missed the final 11 games of last season with a degenerative condition in his knee, while Branch and LaPorta suffered their own season-ending injuries.Branch tore the Achilles tendon in his right leg late in December in a win over the Cowboys. Meanwhile, LaPorta suffered a herniated disc in his back in November that required surgery. All three have been standouts for Detroit. Branch was a Pro Bowler and Joseph was a first-team All-Pro in 2024. Jospeh had nine interceptions during that 2024 campaign, while Branch added four. LaPorta set the rookie receptions mark for a tight end in 2023 and has registered 186 grabs for 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns in his three-season career thus far.Joseph inked a four-year, $86 million contract extension with Detroit ahead of last season that ties him to the Lions through the 2029 NFL season. The Lions just completed a contract extension with star linebacker Jack Campbell, paving the way for the franchise to perhaps finalize long-term deals with both Branch and LaPorta. For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like. Koby Altman looks back and ahead as Cavaliers head into big offseason
Was the 2025-2026 Cleveland Cavaliers journey to the Eastern Conference Finals a bust or a sign of hope for next season? For the Cavs front office, there's pride in what the team accomplished — its first conference final since 2018 — but disappointment remains after being swept by the New York Knicks."I always say two things can be true," Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman said Friday, May 29, in a season wrap-up news conference. "We hated the way it ended. We're disappointed with the way it ended. I think the reason for that is we have higher expectations. We've built this thing to a level of standards, of excellence, and we know we could be better. But the other thing that could be true is we could be proud of what we've accomplished here, be proud of what we've built."Altman was blunt when talking about Game 1 of the conference finals. The Cavs led by 22 points in the fourth quarter, only to lose in overtime."I think for us, if we're being honest and transparent, when we lost Game 1, that really impacted us," Altman said. "That was the time to sort of put them on their heels and stop that momentum that they had, and we gave that one away."In reviewing the conference finals, Altman saw one constant playing a significant role in the outcome."We missed a lot of open shots and that's not a get-better thing," he said. "I don't know what it was. You get to this level, shot-making matters. In that series in particular, we missed a number of open shots and so shot-making was big and matching [the Knicks] offense was a big part."Given the Cavs played every other day for a large chunk of the playoffs, Altman said the team must start preparing now to avoid fatigue playing a major factor in the future."We got to get better in terms of we want to play longer." Altman said. "If we're going to use [tired] legs as an excuse, then that means we got to start now in terms of our preparation, endurance, durability, because everyone's going through that right now."Altman understands fatigue can impact the game, but he does not want to see that as an excuse."I'm not saying there's not fatigue and mental fatigue, but you got to give yourself a chance," Altman said. "And that's why we're disappointed because we've built ourselves up to a level of expectation and standard now to where we want to get to the finals and compete for that championship and so anything less is just excuses. We can't go there."Altman said he's had various discussions with staff members, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and players about the next steps for the team. He said their conversations all align with bringing another championship to Cleveland."We have a foundation here to put us in a position to compete for championships. It's been a long road to get here. We have to figure out how to break through one more time," Altman said.Koby Altman praises players, Cavs' growth throughout NBA playoffsThe Cavs reached the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season. They went 52-30 this past regular season, earning the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference after being the top seed a year ago. Each year, as the Cavs have progressed, they have looked to elevate themselves through player development and acquiring key contributors from the outside, such as trading for All-Star guard James Harden in February."This group is still kind of new like when you talk about adding Harden at the deadline," Altman said. "Over the last five years, we've retooled and added to this roster. This is certainly not a place where we're like we need to blow this up and start again."Altman also spoke about guard Donovan Mitchell's personal impact on the team and the success it has brought the Cavs. The team acquired Mitchell ahead of the 2022-23 season to jump-start this run of playoff trips."Donovan is our guy," Altman said. "Four years without him, no playoffs. Four years with him, playoffs. He's elevated everything about this franchise and organization. He finally broke through to a conference finals, and he wants more. We're getting him at his peak right now."For center Jarrett Allen and forward Evan Mobley, they played a crucial role during the first two rounds of this year's playoffs against the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons. In the Cavs' Game 7 win over the Raptors, Allen totaled 22 points, 19 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. He dominated the third quarter, scoring 14 points and lifting the Cavs to a lead going into the fourth quarter."Game 7 JA, that's going to be etched in the walls somewhere in Cleveland history, and it really will be because we needed him at those times and at those moments when our season's on the line. He was incredible," Altman said.Mobley keyed Cleveland's first road win of the 2026 playoffs, Game 5 in Detroit, as he hit a big 3-pointer and made some clutch foul shots."Mobley ... you can argue was consistently our best player throughout the playoffs," Altman said. "He was tremendous for us. That 3 ball that went it gave us all the belief. We didn't see that from him two, three years ago."Mobely's name is prominent in any trade speculation involving the Cavs. Altman made it clear he was not going to talk about trade rumors. With what he considers a high-caliber roster heading into the offseason, he said any changes will need to be discussed extensively."If you have a really good deep roster, you have to make difficult decisions," Altman said. "And, so, we'll start to deliberate what that means and who we can bring back."The Akron Beacon Journal sports department can be contacted via email at bjsports@thebeaconjournal.com. 🎥 PSG v Arsenal, ultras clash in Budapest, Paris readies armoured glass 😰
🎥 PSG v Arsenal, ultras clash in Budapest, Paris readies armoured glass 😰Budapest is getting ready for Gala night. At 6 p.m., in fact, PSG and Arsenal will battle it out for the Champions League in a final that promises plenty of spectacle. On one side are the defending champions, without a doubt the strongest team in the world, led by the magician Luis Enrique; on the other are the Gunners, fresh off winning the Premier League and therefore riding sky-high morale. Not everything that glitters is gold, though. The Parisians and the English, in fact, have two of the most passionate fanbases around, and all too often that leads to scenes that are frankly avoidable.⚔️ Clashes in Budapest! Meanwhile, Paris gets ready...During the night, some of the ultra groups (or hooligans, if you prefer) of the two finalists clashed in the streets of the Hungarian capital. The risks, however, are not limited to Budapest. This morning, in fact, Paris woke up determined to avoid a repeat of what happened a year ago, when after the win against Inter, shops on the Champs-Élysées and in the city center were stormed by PSG fans. The toll was heavy, with smashed windows, stolen goods, injuries, and widespread chaos. That explains why, in the French capital today, barriers have been installed to protect the windows of the main shops, with glass that — according to local media — is supposedly even bulletproof. You can never be too careful, especially when ultras are involved. Unfortunately, this too is part of football. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇮🇹 here.

Lynch 'firmly believes' he can turn Derry form around
Derry City boss Tiernan Lynch said he "firmly believes I can turn this around" despite mounting pressure on his position. The Candystripes slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Dundalk at Oriel Park to stretch their winless run in the Premier Division to seven games.Lynch's side are sixth in the table, 18 points off pacesetters Shamrock Rovers despite being tipped to challenge for the title this season, but the manager is confident he is the man to get them back on track."I reflect every day. I don't need a break to reflect. As I said and continue to say, I look at everything that we do and the one thing I have to do is I have to keep believing that I can turn this around," he told BBC Radio Foyle."I do firmly believe I can turn this around and I know, nobody wants to hear it right now, we've just lost. If it's a matter of me reflecting, I don't think anyone needs to worry about me reflecting."Straight away we need wins. Dominant performances and dominating possession, that's all definitely the way I want my team to play and definitely what I think the fans want to watch, but we've got to score goals."It's been hugely frustrating with lots of things going on, we've got to win games, that's the bottom line." Derry without a win in seven after Dundalk defeatDundalk defeat 'hard to swallow'Defeat at Oriel Park leaves the Candystripes 18 points off table-toppers Shamrock Rovers [Getty Images]Derry fell behind on 20 minutes at Oriel Park as Daryl Horgan opened the scoring by firing beyond Eddie Beach.Cameron Dummigan levelled for the visitors with a stunning volley from outside the box on 58 minutes, but two minutes later they conceded again as Gbemi Arubi's goal condemned the Candystripes to a sixth defeat of the season.Lynch said the latest loss was "really hard to take" and he was "obviously disappointed and frustrated" with the result."The first half an hour of the game we were pinned back. I thought the second half we were much better, we changed our formation, we got a better handle of the game and we got ourselves back in the game," he explained."Then we conceded again, so early and it was a game that we felt if we could get one to get ourselves back in, we really would have kicked on from there because, as I say, I thought we were a lot more dominant at that stage."We huffed and puffed but we didn't cause them enough problems. We had plenty of possession and got into good areas but we didn't work the goalkeeper enough and that's frustrating. "The chances that they did create, they scored from. It's just really hard to swallow."

Rescuers free 4 men who had been trapped in a flooded Laos cave, search for 2 still missing
This image provided by the Association Of Volunteers For Lao People, shows rescuers after they safely evacuated the villagers, who had been trapped in a cave in Xaisomboun province, Laos, Saturday, May 30 , 2026. (Association Of Volunteers For Lao People via AP)2026-05-30T07:31:47Z BANGKOK (AP) — Rescue workers in Laos said Saturday they have safely evacuated four villagers trapped in a flooded cave for 10 days, the day after another one was successfully extracted. Two men remain missing.Lao and Thai rescue groups posted about the successful operation on social media, along with photos of the men lying on stretchers, wearing oxygen masks and being wrapped in foil blankets. The villagers had reportedly entered the cave last week to look for valuable minerals before being trapped by flash flooding that blocked their way out. One other villager escaped in time and alerted the authorities to the seven left behind.Lao organization Rescue Volunteer for People said on its Facebook page that the water level inside the cave receded low enough for them to leave with divers who had gone in to deliver food and water. They said they will continue their search for the two who remain missing. The first man was safely evacuated on Friday. According to rescuers, that operation took about 30 minutes. Videos showed the moment he emerged from the water alongside a diver, catching his breath before struggling to crawl through a narrow, flooded passage and rising unsteadily to his feet. As rescuers helped him away from the tunnel, one could be heard warning others to be careful because his hands were injured. He was then wrapped in a foil blanket and helped into a seated position. Another video showed the man getting out from the cave’s entrance with a lamp strapped to his forehead. He was walking unsteadily with the assistance of two men, who handed him over to other team members amid a waiting crowd. Read More The villagers had reportedly entered the cave last week to look for valuable minerals before being trapped by flash flooding that blocked their way out. One other villager escaped in time and alerted the authorities to the seven left behind. Five of them were found alive Wednesday. They were identified by their first names as Khamla, Mued, Ee, Ing and Laen. The men had been supplied with water, soft food and foil blankets to keep them warm, although videos shot inside the cave suggested that their conditions continued to deteriorate.Rescue teams from Laos and neighboring Thailand were joined by Japanese and Malaysian colleagues. Indonesian, French and Australian specialists also reportedly arrived at the site in a rugged area in the central province of Xaisomboun, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital, Vientiane.Several of them had taken part in the complicated 2018 cave rescue in northern Thailand of 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach. More risky tasks await rescuersIn a video shot Friday, just about an hour before the evacuation of the first man began, Thai rescuer Kengkaj Bongkawong of the Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin detailed the challenge they are facing in the operation. The team has set up a station in a large chamber inside the cave, accessible only by navigating more than 200 meters (yards) of twisting, narrow, flooded passages with jagged walls. From there, divers need to dive through a flooded tunnel about 30 meters (yards) before reaching the trapped men.“To dive in a cave, there are issues with the temperature, narrow areas, control of movement, and managing the panic of the survivor, which will be difficult, but we have to do it,” Kengkaj said. There is a significant risk for the team of guiding the survivors without diving skills through zero-visibility water.A video showed Thai diver Norrased Palasing and Finnish diver Mikko Paasi teaching the men how to use diving gear, including breathing techniques underwater.“All the way, breathe through your mouth only. Do not ever breathe with your nose, do you understand?” Norrased said during the session.Rescuers are also preparing to search for the two villagers who remain missing.Kengkaj said the team plans to explore an area deeper inside the cave, about 20 to 25 meters (yards) beyond where the survivors were found. However, he cautioned that the section is heavily flooded.

RCB’s Road to IPL 2026 Final: Table-toppers, most consistent side and favourites to defend title
NEW DELHI: After waiting 18 long seasons to finally lift the Indian Premier League trophy in 2025, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have backed up their historic triumph with another dominant campaign. Under captain Rajat Patidar, RCB have transformed into the most consistent side of IPL 2026 and now stand one win away from defending their crown. For Virat Kohli, who spent nearly two decades carrying the hopes of the franchise, last season’s title ended years of heartbreak. But rather than slowing down after finally winning the trophy, RCB returned this season looking even stronger, calmer and more complete.Playing as defending champions for the first time in IPL history, RCB embraced the pressure brilliantly. They finished at the top of the league-stage standings with nine wins from 14 matches before storming into the final with a crushing 92-run victory over Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1.As they prepare to face Gujarat Titans again in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad, RCB look every bit the favourites to win back-to-back titles.RCB’s Road to Final: Explosive start set the toneRCB began their campaign with an emphatic six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the season opener in Bengaluru. In what turned out to be an early sign of the batting madness that defined IPL 2026, SRH piled up 201/9, only for RCB to chase it down comfortably in the 16th over.Virat Kohli anchored the chase with an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls, while the aggressive batting approach immediately showed the intent with which RCB planned to play the season. The campaign gathered further momentum in the Southern Derby against Chennai Super Kings. Batting first at home, RCB smashed 250/3, with Tim David hammering an unbeaten 70 off just 25 balls. CSK fought hard with 207 in reply, but RCB still cruised to a commanding 43-run victory.Their first setback came in Guwahati against Rajasthan Royals. Despite posting another 200-plus total, RCB ran into teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose explosive 26-ball 78 helped RR chase down the target with two overs to spare. However, the defeat did little to disrupt RCB’s rhythm. They bounced back with consecutive wins over Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. At the Wankhede Stadium, RCB piled up 240/4 before restricting MI to 225/5 in a high-scoring thriller. Against LSG, they showcased their bowling strength by bowling the visitors out for 146.Those victories also helped RCB build a healthy net run rate, which later proved crucial in the standings.Mid-season wobble and champion’s responseRCB suffered their first home defeat when Delhi Capitals edged them out in a last-over thriller in Bengaluru. But once again, the defending champions responded strongly. They chased down another 200-plus target against Gujarat Titans before producing one of the most dominant bowling performances of the season against Delhi Capitals in the reverse fixture. Led by Josh Hazlewood’s stunning 4/12, RCB bundled DC out for just 75 in 16.3 overs and chased down the target in only 6.3 overs, significantly boosting their net run rate. The toughest phase of RCB’s season arrived soon after.Back-to-back defeats against Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants briefly put their playoff push under pressure. GT dismissed RCB for just 155 in Ahmedabad and chased the target down with ease, while RCB failed to hunt down a revised 213-run target against LSG in a rain-affected contest. At that stage, RCB had six wins from 10 matches and still needed at least two more victories to guarantee a playoff spot. That pressure, however, brought out the best in the defending champions.RCB responded with a hat-trick of victories to cement their place at the top of the table. They completed a season double over Mumbai Indians in a thrilling last-ball win in Raipur before comfortably defeating Kolkata Knight Riders to seal qualification for the playoffs.A 23-run victory over Punjab Kings in Dharamsala further strengthened their position at the top.Even a heavy 55-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final league match could not stop RCB from finishing first. Their superior net run rate ensured they topped the standings ahead of Gujarat Titans and SRH, despite all three teams ending on 18 points.Patidar leads from the front in Qualifier 1RCB then delivered their most complete performance of the season in Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans.Skipper Rajat Patidar produced a sensational captain’s knock, blasting 93 off just 33 balls with nine towering sixes to power RCB to a massive 254/5.The bowlers then completed the job clinically, bundling out GT for 162 to secure a crushing 92-run victory and book RCB’s place in their fifth IPL final.More importantly, the performance reinforced why RCB have been the standout team of the season. Ellet's Trey Carter sprints to title at OHSAA regional track meet
NORTH ROYALTON — Akron Public Schools has produced many great sprinters over the years.A new member to that club might have introduced himself at the Division II regional track meet May 29 at North Royalton.Ellet's Trey Carter won the 100 meters with a time of 10.74 seconds. Carter passed a few runners in the second half of the race, edging Canfield's Donnie Ferko at the line.Carter admitted he was motivated to excel in the sprints after just missing a state berth May 27 with an eighth-place finish in the long jump."I had a bad start, but I was able to make up for it in the second half of the race," Carter said. "That motivated me to put it all on the track, and that's what I did."Carter almost scored the spring double at North Royalton, as he ran a similar race in the 200 with a big second-half push. This time, Carter came in second in 21.47, nearly catching winner Luke McGovern of Aurora (21.4) at the line.Carter's exploits helped Ellet tie with Revere for 11th in the boys team race with 21.5 points. Given his entire squad returns next year, Ellet coach Kevin Gorby asked, "Why not us?" when he considered next year's team crown.Avon won this year's boys team title with 57 points, and Walsh Jesuit was runner-up with 49.5 points, despite not having any individual champions.Revere's Will Wells had a bit of an up-and-down day. It began with a perfect trip in the 1,600, which he won in 4:22.99."It went out of a little bit slower than I had hoped," Wells said. "The last two laps I just played it safe. I was pretty compact and lot of us got stepped on the back of our shoes, but it worked out."However, that contact was nothing compared to Wells' 800 race, as he came storming down the home stretch and crashed into another runner at the line.Wells finished sixth, but his time of 1:53.85 earned an at-large state berth. Twinsburg's Sam Hopp finished runner up in the 800 in 1:51.88.Tallmadge's Anthony Bontempo put up the top field performance of the day, winning the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches. Walsh's Zach Salata cleared 6-4 to tie for third place."It didn't feel the greatest at the start, but as the meet went on my energy picked up," Bontempo said. "The goal is to win [at state]. I'm ranked first right now, so hopefully I can come out on top. I think that's the reason I jumped good; I haven't had good weather in a long time."In the shot put, Hudson's Drake Vander Cica advanced to state in his second event, finishing runner-up with a throw of 58-9½.Along with McGovern's win in the 200, Portage County picked up a regional title when Kent Roosevelt's Kyle McQueen won the 110 hurdles in 14.38. St. Vincent-St. Mary's Ali Hann was second in 14.49. Suburban League shines in OHSAA Division II girls regional track meetThe girls meet at North Royalton ended the same way it began — with Suburban League teams sweeping the state berths in a relay.Twinsburg closed the meet by winning the 1,600 relay in 3:54.13, with Wadsworth (3.54.96), Aurora (3:56.36), Tallmadge (3:56.36) and Nordonia (3:58.45) all advancing to Columbus. It was an appropriate finish, as Aurora won the girls title with 66 points, while Wadsworth was second with 55 and Twinsburg third with 42.5.Three local individual champions participated in that 1,600 relay.Wadsworth's Hailey Otradovec put on a show in the 400, winning in 54.94 and beating the field by more than a second."Honestly, the nerves kind of kicked in, even though I've run the 400 a bunch of times," Otradvoec said. "I wa really just trying to be relaxed and trying to get down [to state], and I feel like I executed that well."Twinsburg's Nicole Smith recovered from a so-so prelim race to win the 300 hurdles in 44.02."I was bit nervous because I think I came in with [the] third seed," Smith said. "Once I got out there, I just relaxed and ran my race."Tallmadge's Allison Hay continued her big season, leading the 800 wire to wire and winning in 2:11.81."I just wanted to win. That first lap was fast, so I thought there was no way," Hay said. "I saw zeros coming down the stretch, so I said, 'We got it.' They put me in just just the right spot where I had fear mixed with confidence. I knew I could run with them."Aurora had no individual champions, but got runner-up finishes from Isabella Cicero in the 400 (56.05) and Audrey Miller in the 1,600 (4:55.73).In the field events, Kent Roosevelt's Kaidyn Harris just missed the 18-foot barrier in the long jump. Her best leap of 17-11¾ was good for second, and Walsh's Sofia Klue was third with a leap of 17-11.Hudson's Makenna Bode (second, 12-0), Highland's Bria Riedy (fourth, 11-4) and Green's Ella Sifferlin (fifth, 11-0) all advanced to state in the pole vault. Revere's Victoria Parish finished third in the discus (120-7).Michael Leonard can be reached at mleonard@recordpub.com.This article originally appeared on Akron Beacon Journal: Wadsoworth girls, Walsh boys finish second at OHSAA regional meet

Report: Jurgen Klopp could finally be set for managerial return
Report: Jurgen Klopp could finally be set for managerial returnLiverpool Legend Jurgen Klopp Could be Set for Managerial ReturnJurgen Klopp remains one of the most admired managers in world football, even two years after leaving Liverpool. The German departed Anfield in May 2024 after a transformative spell on Merseyside, having restored Liverpool to the summit of English and European football. His legacy includes the club’s first Premier League title, Champions League success, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.Now 58, Klopp is not currently working in club management. He has since taken on a role as Global Head of Soccer for Red Bull, a position that has kept him close to the game while away from the pressures of the dugout. That has not stopped speculation over his future. Klopp’s reputation, built across spells with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, continues to ensure his name is linked whenever major jobs become available.Al-Ittihad Interest EmergesAccording to talkSPORT, Al-Ittihad regard Jurgen Klopp as their “dream” managerial target as the Saudi Pro League club search for a new head coach.Al-Ittihad are assessing options following the departure of Francisco Conceicao. Club officials are said to hold genuine admiration for Klopp, although there is also recognition that any attempt to appoint him would be extremely difficult.Photo: IMAGOThe financial structure around such a move is considered complicated. Additional support from the Saudi Ministry of Finance may be required for any approach to become viable, and sources close to the situation have played down the prospect of advanced talks. For Al-Ittihad, the appeal is obvious. Klopp’s Liverpool teams combined intensity, recruitment clarity and emotional connection with supporters. That profile would carry enormous weight in Saudi Arabia, where clubs continue to pursue elite coaching names alongside high profile players.Real Madrid Links DismissedKlopp has also been linked with a possible return to management elsewhere, including speculation around Real Madrid. The Spanish club had been connected with a potential move amid uncertainty over their coaching plans, although reports now suggest Jose Mourinho is set to take charge. Klopp, however, has rejected suggestions that Real Madrid made contact. The German said: “If Real Madrid had phoned, we would have heard about it by now. But that’s all nonsense. They haven’t called even once, not once. My agent is there, you can ask him.“They haven’t called him either. Right now I’m not thinking about that, luckily there’s no reason to. For my age I’m quite advanced in life, but as a coach I’m not completely finished. I haven’t reached retirement age. Who knows what will happen in the coming years? But there’s nothing planned.”

Lexington's Hughes leads area state qualifiers in final home track meet
LEXINGTON — Latrell Hughes will never forget the final home track meet of his career. Especially if it leads to something even more memorable for the Lexington graduate next weekend. On Wednesday, just three days after donning a cap and gown, Hughes anchored Lexington’s 4x800 relay team to a Division II regional championship at the school. The meet concluded Friday with Hughes tacking on another title in the 800 run in his final race in front of the home crowd. It was all part of a master plan that will hopefully lead to repeat gold medals in both races at the state meet in Columbus next Saturday and Sunday.MADISON SOFTBALL STATE BOUND: Madison Rams win first regional softball championship since 1995It was the first time running regionals on my home track, so I wanted to come out here and have a good race for my last time being here,” said Hughes, a University of Oregon commit and track All-American. “The ultimate goal, though, is a state title.”With the OHSAA’s expansion from three to five divisions, Lex’s boys dropped from Division I – where they won the team runner-up trophy at last year’s state meet – to Division II this spring. That meant a chance to run regionals at home after years of heading north for DI regional competition.Hughes made the most of the switch in venues, using the home oval advantage to show why he’s a reigning state champ in two events. He joined forces Wednesday with Will Hooper and brothers Nate and Trevor Reed to run a 7:48.68 and win the 4x8 by six seconds over Anthony Wayne. Just as he wasn’t pushed on the anchor leg of the relay, Hughes cruised to victory in Friday’s 800, winning in 1:52.99.Hughes was the only Lex boy to earn an automatic state berth Friday with a top five finish, but pole vaulter Eli Barr qualified with a fourth place height of 13 feet on Wednesday and Lincoln Rice earned a wild card into the state meet with his sixth place finish in the 3200 (9:30.24) during the first day of the meet.As of late Friday, 800 runner Trevor Reed (1:56.5) and Lex’s 4x400 relay team (3:25.78) of Nate Reed, Cohen Lautzenhiser, Kingston Peterson and Cam Glennon were also hoping to become wild card entries after sixth place finishes. After earning that runner-up trophy in DI at last year’s state meet, Lex was hoping to ride Hughes and some complementary pieces to state title contention again this spring. But injuries have thrown a monkey wrench into those plans, even impacting Hughes’ season. His foot got stepped on at indoor nationals, leading to fears he might miss the entire outdoor season, and he’s never been completely healthy since. Hamstring issues have been the biggest problem, making for a challenging season.“This whole season has been up and down, but I’ve been training my butt off so that I can compete again for a state title,” Hughes said. “I think I’m close (physically). Mentally, I know I can still do it.“Last year’s state title definitely gives me confidence because I know I’ve done it before. I’d love to do it again, but nothing comes easy. I’ll have to go there and do my best.”In a freak accident, Hughes’ twin brother, Dantrell, nearly got impaled by a hurdle that got knocked into his lane at the Marion Night Invitational and he watched Friday on crutches after suffering a hamstring injury in Wednesday’s prelims. Not only did Lex lose its best hurdler, but also its best high jumper when freshman Jayden Perkins broke his ankle playing basketball just before the conference meet.“It makes you appreciate the year we had last year,” coach Mike Moore said. “It was our version of ‘perfect,’ and it shows everybody else how hard it is to be perfect. There’s Injuries … you’ve got seniors graduating, and everything going on in their lives. Perfect is hard. Last year was perfect.“This year we’ve been humbled a little bit. You know what? We’re going in next week with kids feeling good, and that’s the bottom line. Get kids where they’re feeling good, feeling confident and they’re running fast. Let the rest take care of itself.”Ashland state-bound in eight eventsIt was another productive week for Ashland junior Sadie Walter and the entire Arrows boys and girls program.Walter became a state qualifier in three open events, sweeping the hurdles races and grabbing the last automatic state berth in the 100 dash. Her winning time of 14.55 in the 100 hurdles was a school record and her first place time of 44.33 in the 300 hurdles was her personal best, just off another school mark. Her 12.44 in the 100 dash was good for fifth and a spot at state.“It’s exciting (to be going in three events),” Walter said. “I knew I could do it if I just stayed calm, just worked to the best of my abilities. I knew what I could do. I prayed that God would keep me calm. I really focused on that.”Walter broke the previous record of 14.6 in the 100 hurdles, set by Mary Sterle in the mid-1980s.“That’s when my mom was running (for Ashland),” Walter said. “When I started dropping time this year I knew I could get it. I was just about there on Wednesday (in the prelims), with a 14.64. That’s when I knew I could push, I could get it.”After losing to Wooster freshman Teagan Hafner in the 100 hurdles at the OCC meet, Walter has come back strong with district and regional titles.“As soon as that happened, I just went to practice and worked on my start, worked on my start,” Walter said, “and I think the last couple of weeks I completely got that down. Plus the weather was perfect this week, so I feel really good about where I am right now.”Fellow junior Oaklynn Burns should feel the same way. She won a regional long jump championship, tying the school record with a leap of 17-11.5.Eighteen feet has been the goal of this first-year jumper for quite some time now, and she believes she’ll have that added half inch in her at state after her approach left her well short of the board on her winning jump.“I think I do (have it in me),” Burns said. “If I had (hit) on the board more, I would have had it. It’s there. I had three more inches on the board to work with.”In winning her regional crown, Burns avenged her loss to Lexi Nelson of Fremont Ross at districts. Ross jumped 18-3 that day, six and a half inches better than Burns. This time around, Ross jumped 17-2.25 and had to settle for fourth.“I felt ready,” Burns said. “That loss (at district) motivated me a little bit, but I was more motivated about trying to make it to state. I just wanted to make the top five (as an automatic qualifier). Top five and school record. I didn’t expect the regional championship, but I’m happy it happened.”In all, Ashland has state qualifiers in eight events – four boys and four girls. Dakota Kruty won the boys long jump on Wednesday (21-5), while Braden Donatini, Greyson Blough and Ty Bates also landed automatic state berths.Donatini was fifth in the 300 hurdles (38.83), Blough was third in the shot put (53-11) and Bates was fifth in the pole vault (12-8).Rams send fiveHistory was made by the Madison Rams. The 4x4 team of Jayden Hall, Camden Moysi, Daniel Norris and Julius Walker placed fourth (3.23.87), becoming the first relay team in program history to qualify for the state meet. Also finishing fourth for the Rams was Jaxin Stancombe in the shot put (53-4). Stancombe could become a state medalist in two sports. He’s already a two-time medalist in wrestling.Liam Kuhn leads the wayCrestview’s Liam Kuhn cleared 14-8 in the pole vault Wednesday to win his fourth regional championship in the Division V meet in Marion. He’s already a three-time state medalist.Joining Kuhn at state will be double qualifier Max Durbin. He was third in both hurdles races, finishing in 14.9 in the 100s and 39.77 in the 300s.Three Crestview girls are headed to Columbus, all in field events. Kuhn’s sister Zoe cleared 10-4 in the pole vault for seventh, eventually getting in as a wild card. Chloe Ringler was third in the discus (115-7) and Kaelyn Weaver was third in the high jump, clearing 5-2.This article originally appeared on Mansfield News Journal: Division II and IV OHSAA state track and field meet to have local flavor

‘It’s like a dream’: Megan Grant makes history as UCLA dominates Arkansas
May 29, 2026; Oklahoma City, OK, USA; UCLA Bruins utility Megan Grant (43) hits a three run home run in the second inning against the Arkansas Razorbacks during the NCAA Women’s College World Series at Devon Park. Mandatory Credit: Brett Rojo-Imagn ImagesUCLA superstar slugger Megan Grant made history on the brightest stage on Friday night as she broke the UCLA career home runs record to help lead her team to a blowout victory over Arkansas in the College World Series.Grant’s home run came in the second inning as part of a UCLA barrage that saw every Bruins player score a run during the inning. Grant’s home run was the team’s third of the inning. The three-run bomb was the 91st home run of Grant’s career, pushing her past Stacey Nuveman for the most home runs in UCLA history.“It’s like a dream, honestly,” said Grant, who now has an NCAA-record 42 home runs this season, via ESPN. “I’m just incredibly honored. Stacey Nuveman was a powerhouse. To be able to say my name is next to hers, I’m truly grateful for it.”Thanks to the offensive barrage, UCLA eliminated Arkansas in just five innings, notching an 11-0 run-rule victory. With the blowout victory, UCLA will now face the loser of Saturday’s game between Tennessee and Texas Tech in another elimination game Sunday. The Bruins will look to keep their season alive once again, and Grant will look to extend her record-breaking season and career.“Whenever you’re not at your best, they’re going to expose you,” Arkansas coach Courtney Deifel said. “They exposed us tonight.”The post ‘It’s like a dream’: Megan Grant makes history as UCLA dominates Arkansas appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.

Nebraska guard works out for NBA team ahead of draft
A former Nebraska basketball player had an NBA pre-draft workout earlier this week. Sam Hoiberg worked out for the Indiana Pacers on Thursday.Hoiberg started 35 games this past season for the Huskers. He had 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.Sam's father, Fred Hoiberg, was selected by Indiana in the second round of the 1995 NBA Draft. He played for the Pacers for the first four seasons of his NBA career. After the workout, Hoiberg spoke to the media about his workout and the connection the Pacers have to his family. It's pretty cool. To see his name on the Pacers alumni wall. I didn't know it was on there... having played for him in college and having the success we had and growing as a player. I never expected to be doing NBA workouts... but it's pretty cool to do it with my dad's former team. The interesting aspect of this workout is that the Pacers currently have no draft picks. Indiana lost the No. 5 overall pick in a trade with the LA Clippers for center Ivica Zubac and does not have a second-round selection. The 2026 NBA Draft will occur June 23-24 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Why the Protect College Sports Act is the best thing for college sports
Apr 4, 2026; Phoenix, AZ, USA; A Wilson Evo NXT basketball with the NCAA Women's Final Four logo passes through the net at Mortgage Matchup Center. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images | Kirby Lee-Imagn Images If you’ve paid any attention to college sports over the last few years, you know the only steady thing is unsteadiness. Between the endless carousel of the transfer portal, NIL deals masquerading as booster slush funds, and conference realignments destroying century-old traditions, the landscape has become almost unrecognizable. Some people love it, and I think that’s fine. I hate it.A lot of fans have been begging for some common sense, and surprisingly, Washington might actually deliver on it. Senators Maria Cantwell (D) and Ted Cruz (R) have introduced the bipartisan “Protect College Sports Act,” and after reading through the fine print, I have to admit, this might be exactly what we need. Here is a breakdown of what the bill actually does, along with my take on why these changes are long overdue. The Breakdown: What the Protect College Sports Act Actually Does1. Roster Stability & Eligibility (Finally)One-Time Transfer Limit: Athletes will be limited to a single free transfer. This is a massive win. There is absolutely no reason a college athlete needs to transfer four times in four years. Serial transferring leaves kids without a degree, without a loyal fanbase to support them, and severely disadvantaged entering a highly educated workforce if they can’t make it to the professional leagues. Strict Professional Restrictions: Any athlete who has competed professionally and earned more than tournament prize money is barred from college athletics. It is a relief to see the NCAA’s muddied, case-by-case evaluation process cleared up here. Having one straightforward rule is easy to follow and eliminates the constant need for lawsuits. They may still come, but it would be much harder to break through.Five-Year Window: Establishes a firm five-year limit on collegiate eligibility. No mess, no fuss, 5 years and you’re done.2. Much-Needed NIL Reality ChecksCracking Down on Phony Deals: Empowers the NCAA and the newly proposed College Sports Commission to reject third-party NIL deals that lack a “valid business purpose.” These reforms are desperately needed. NIL was never supposed to be a slush fund where a booster pays a kid $2 million simply to commit to a school. It has become a complete joke, and this legislation finally targets the pay-for-play disguise.National Standard & Agent Caps: Replaces the chaotic patchwork of state laws with a unified national NIL standard and limits sports agent fees to a maximum of 5%.Floating Compensation Cap: Allows conferences to increase the school-to-athlete compensation cap (currently set at $21.3 million for next year) so player compensation doesn’t backslide.3. Serious Athlete ProtectionsGuaranteed Medical Care: Mandates comprehensive medical care and academic scholarships for athletes. While the bill adds several serious protections for students, cementing guaranteed medical care is a huge addition for player safety and long-term well-being.Medical Trust: Creates a specific trust fund to assist lower-resource athletic departments with providing proper medical coverage.Legal Recourse: Gives athletes a “private right of action” to file claims if they are being shortchanged on revenue sharing or NIL rights.4. Coaching Accountability & Anti-Monopoly RulesThe “Lane Kiffin” Rule: Prohibits head coaches from abandoning their teams before a season is completely finished, and blocks schools from hiring coaches mid-season. Holding coaches to their current seasons and stopping the chaotic early hiring carousel is a huge boon for the sport’s integrity.Stopping the “Super League”: Legally prevents conferences that generate over $1 billion in revenue (currently just the Big Ten and SEC) from merging. The preventative measures taken to stop a breakaway, monopolistic super league are fantastic for the health of college sports as a whole.5. The Grand Slam: Pooling Rights & Saving TraditionsRevenue Pooling: Offers conferences the option to pool their media rights together, much like professional leagues. I really love the idea of pooling the money together to raise the baseline revenue for everyone, creating a more sustainable financial model. The Best Part (The Triggers): If conferences agree to pool their rights, three mandates are triggered: games cannot be hidden entirely behind paywalls, Olympic sport scholarships/rosters must be preserved at current levels, and schools are forced to play historic regional rivals if conference realignment separated them. Mandating the return of real, historic rivalries and preserving Olympic sports is, without a doubt, the best part of the entire bill. For the first time in a long time, it feels like there is a real roadmap to fixing the fractured state of college athletics. By putting guardrails on the portal, cleaning up the NIL mess, and actually incentivizing the return of the regional rivalries that built these programs in the first place, this bill protects the core of what makes college sports special. But that’s just my read on it. What do you think about the Protect College Sports Act? Are you a fan of the one-time transfer limit, or do you think the federal government needs to stay out of it entirely? Drop your thoughts in the comments below. I want to hear where you stand on this.

From Germany: Roma in pole to land Oosterwolde
From Germany: Roma in pole to land Oosterwolde Roma’s transfer market is already in full swing, especially after qualifying for the Champions League seven years after last competing. The Giallorossi’s transfer window is only awaiting the arrival of Tony D’Amico, who will replace Massara, who was parted company just yesterday. One of the first names the new sporting director could focus on is Fenerbahçe defender Jayden Oosterwolde. A Dutch defender born in 2001, who can also play on the left flank, he is a lynchpin of the Turkish club’s defense, as evidenced by his statistics from last season: 47 appearances, including a starter, across the league and cup competitions. He is a key player for Fenerbahçe, which is why his value is also quite high. As reported in Germany by news portal Fussball Daten, Roma will need an offer between €30 and €35 million to land Oosterwolde. A significant valuation for a player who has already tasted Italian football during his time with Parma. He will spend a year in Emilia, from January 2022 to January 2023, before being sold to Turkey for €7 million. According to initial reports, Roma have already submitted an initial offer of around €20 million, leading the competition. Looking at the statistics, one figure stands out: in 47 matches played this season, he has received 18 yellow cards across all competitions. He is being eyed by numerous clubs across Europe: Leipzig and Schalke 04 in Germany, Porto and Benfica in Portugal, Lyon in France, and Everton in England.

'I need some grip tech': Sai Sudharsan's hilarious response after another freak dismissal
Sai Sudharsan created an unwanted and bizarre piece of IPL history by becoming the first batter to be dismissed hit-wicket in back-to-back matches. The Gujarat Titans opener suffered two almost identical dismissals during the IPL 2026 playoffs, first against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1 and then against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2.In Qualifier 1 against RCB, GT were chasing a record 255-run target when Sudharsan's bat slipped out of his hands while attempting a run and crashed into the stumps, dismissing him for 14. The freak dismissal triggered a dramatic top-order collapse as GT slumped to 51/5.— IPL (@IPL) Just three days later, history repeated itself in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals. Chasing 215 in Mullanpur, Sudharsan was in sublime touch, racing to 58 off just 32 balls. However, after slicing a boundary off spinner Brijesh Sharma, his bat once again slipped from his hands during the follow-through and struck the stumps, resulting in another extraordinary hit-wicket dismissal.— IPL (@IPL) Despite the bizarre setback, Gujarat Titans went on to secure a comfortable seven-wicket victory and book their place in the IPL 2026 final. Speaking after the match, Sudharsan took the unusual incidents in good spirits and joked that he may need to work on his grip technique before the summit clash in Ahmedabad." I think I should try some things. I'm going to try some grip tech now and just bat a few balls and see how it is. Seriously. Last game it just bounced a few times and hit the stumps. But this game, I just wanted it to hit straight, I think," Sudharsan said during the post-match presentation.— Maina_Singhx77 (@Maina_Singhx77) Gujarat Titans secured a place in the IPL 2026 final with a dominant 7-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur. RR posted 214/6, powered by a brilliant 96 off 47 balls from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and a late cameo from Donovan Ferreira. In response, GT captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a stunning 104 off 53 balls, while Sai Sudharsan chipped in with 58 off 32. Their massive opening partnership put GT firmly in control as they chased down the target in just 18.4 overs, finishing on 219/3.

The winger swapped Newcastle United for the Catalan club this week in a deal worth up to £69.3 million (€80m), inclusive of add-ons.The 25-year-old, who finished this season as the Magpies’ top goalscorer with 17 goals, had four years left to run on his contract after signing a long-term extension in 2024.Bayern Munich had been in talks to sign the England international, while Liverpool had been previously linked with him, but there was only ever one club he wanted to join.Anthony Gordon speaks fluent Spanish following Barcelona transferGordon went as far as learning how to speak Spanish and practiced with Newcastle’s physio on a daily basis, demonstrating how much he believed in his dream of playing for Barcelona.“I wanted to speak Spanish because, as I kid, I believed I would play for Barça, believe it or not,” Gordon told reporters.“I have a physio in Newcastle and we spoke every day and I told him that one day I would play for Barça, so I wanted to learn Spanish.”He added: “As soon as I knew Barça was a serious option, there was never any question. I always wanted Barça. Barça is the biggest club on the planet.“It’s the stuff I dreamed of as a child. It really is a dream come true to be here. Report – Milan Set to Open Talks with Conference League Winner to Replace Allegri
Report – Milan Set to Open Talks with Conference League Winner to Replace AllegriMilan have reportedly identified Oliver Glasner as the top candidate to replace Massimiliano Allegri in the dugout. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, they have scheduled talks with the Austrian for next week, making him the most concrete option on the table right now.The Rossoneri sacked Massimiliano Allegri a few days ago, refusing to forgive him for failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Even without the distraction of European football, the former Juventus coach, who’s now one step away from taking charge of Napoli, fell short of a top-four finish in Serie A.Unfortunately for Allegri, the club’s reaction was swift and ruthless. Milan are now on the lookout for a new manager, but after missing out on Andoni Iraola, they’ve switched their attention toward Glasner. Although Antonio Conte remains in the picture, the 51-year-old has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed the Italian tactician.Milan Set Sights on Oliver GlasnerFresh off lifting the UEFA Conference League title with Crystal Palace, Glasner is ready to open a new chapter in his increasingly successful managerial career. Indeed, only last season, he led the Eagles to their first-ever major trophy, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final. His style is direct, high-energy, and built on aggressive pressing and quick transitions. The kind of football the Milan squad, when fit and motivated, is quite capable of producing. Therefore, it’s fair to say that he would be a decent fit for Rossoneri, who must now find a way to bounce back from another disappointing season. What makes this move intriguing is the Ralf Rangnick subplot. Milan recently held talks with the German over a non-managerial role. Meanwhile, Glasner seems to be a perfect match for Rangnick’s football philosophy, making the pair a potentially compelling combination behind the club’s rebuild.

Real Madrid plan to announce first signing immediately after elections
Real Madrid plan to announce first signing immediately after electionsReal Madrid are involved in a shock election process this week, after Florentino Perez called a surprise vote on his future in response to criticism over his leadership over the past two years. It was expected that he would go unchallenged, but Enrique Riquelme has emerged as a surprise candidate, and the two will face off in the polls on the 7th of June. The elections have somewhat delayed Real Madrid’s planning for the summer. After Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed he would not be continuing in the job before the final game of the season, Los Blancos have not announced his replacement. Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly put pen to paper on a three-year contract, but the inability to complete the deal sooner has increased the cost of the deal. Perez is the heavy favourite to win the elections though, and if that is the case, Mourino will be confirmed as the new manager shortly after.Real Madrid to announce first signing after electionsAs will their first signing of the summer. Diario AS report that Real Madrid will execute their buyback option of €9m on Nico Paz from Como. The Argentina international, named this season’s Serie A midfielder of the year, has been heavily linked with a return, and AS say it will be announced as soon as the elections are over, regardless of who wins them. Los Blancos have been in regular touch with him, informing Paz of their plans.Florentino Perez promises more signingsPresidential candidate Riquelme has promised that he already has two international stars ready to sign for Los Blancos if he should win, while Perez declared this week that ‘the signings will come, as they always have.’ Real Madrid are expected to move for a midfielder and a centre-back, but beyond that, there appears to be little certainty on their next additions. Endrick Felipe will also return from his loan move to Olympique Lyon.

CBS shares 1 thing it hates about Iowa football entering 2026
The 2026 college football season is now less than 100 days away.As another highly-anticipated season creeps closer, CBS took a look at its post-spring top 25 rankings and shared one thing it hates about every team inside its top 25.It's a bit of a tale as old as time, but CBS isn't crazy about the methodology that the Hawkeyes typically employ in order to find the win column.Hate: The Hawkeyes' margin for error offensively remains razor-thin without explosive plays - CBSAgain, it's not a new criticism of Iowa, but it's not unreasonable either. Here's a little more of what CBS' Brad Crawford had to say about the Hawkeyes.Winning ugly works -- until it doesn't. If Iowa falls behind by multiple scores against the Big Ten's elite, skepticism remains about whether the Hawkeyes can mount a comeback offensively, even with transfer portal additions at wide receiver. The defense can only carry so much weight before cracks appear. Iowa hopes Anthony Hawkins and Tyler Brown can complement standout Zach Lutmer in the secondary. - CBSIowa is ranked No. 23 in CBS' post-spring top 25 rankings.
