SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRumfield gets gift homer when flyball bounces off Adell's head as Rockies top Angels 8-2ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — TJ Rumfield got a gift when his long flyball bounced off Jo Adell's head for a most unusual home run, and the Colorado Rockies defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-2 on Tuesday night.Willi Castro hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Hunter Goodman had a solo shot in the second. Tomoyuki Sugano (5-4) allowed two runs in five innings for the win.Castro and Rumfield hit back-to-back homers in the fourth off starter Grayson Rodriguez (2-2), who gave up eight runs, eight hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. With the Rockies holding a 7-0 lead, Rumfield sent a flyball to deep right-center, where the ball grazed the outside of Adell's glove before hitting his head and bounding over the wall. There was brief confusion on the field when the ball caromed back into the outfield. Rumfield stopped at second base, initially unsure of the ruling, before proceeding around the bases.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMUS says it plans extra tariffs of 10% or more for most trading partners after forced labor probeU.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer arrives for the G7 trade meeting in Paris, Wednesday, May 6, 2026. (AP Photo/Aurelien Morissard, Pool)2026-06-03T03:52:13Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is proposing that tariffs of 10% or more be imposed on products from dozens of major trading partners following a probe into imports of goods allegedly made with forced labor. The report released early Wednesday by the U.S. Trade Representative said Canada, Mexico, Taiwan and the United Kingdom and some other countries would face 10% additional tariffs for allegedly failing to enforce a forced labor import ban. A 12.5% additional tariff would be imposed on China, Japan, India, South Korea, Brazil and Switzerland and dozens of other countries. “The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced labor is unacceptable. This creates a dynamic where American workers are forced to compete globally on an unlevel playing field,” USTR Ambassador Jamieson Greer said in a statement. He added that “each of our trading partners must do more to ensure that trade does not perversely encourage and entrench forced labor globally.” This latest barrage of tariffs is likely to unsettle key trading partners that have been hit by waves of tariffs since President Donald Trump returned to office early last year. Just two weeks ago, the European Union approved a tariff deal with the United States to cap tariffs on most EU exports at 15%. It followed intense debates among the EU’s 27 nations and threats by European lawmakers to block the agreement. Read More Trump recently returned from a visit to China, where he and its leader Xi Jinping discussed expanding market access for American businesses in China and increasing Chinese investment into U.S. industries. The two leaders agreed to set up separate boards of trade and investment — though few details were provided. The new tariffs would not take effect immediately. They are subject to public comment and review. The investigation into alleged failure to prevent imports of goods allegedly made by forced labor was conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The strategy would enable Trump to skirt limits on his tariffs imposed by the Supreme Court. The report defined forced labor as “work or service exacted from a person under the menace of any penalty for its nonperformance and for which the worker does not offer himself voluntarily.” The Supreme Court ruled in February that Trump had overstepped his authority by using a different law – the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 – to impose sweeping tariffs on U.S. trading partners. The Trump administration has said it would appeal a federal judge’s order making all companies that paid the duties on those earlier tariffs eligible for refunds.Earlier this week, the administration separately proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Brazil, charging that the world’s 10th-biggest economy engages in trade practices that are “unreasonable’’ and that “burden or restrict U.S. commerce.’’The USTR said its investigation showed Brazil had lax anti-corruption enforcement and unfair tariffs of its own, among other things.0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReporter on how much the Warriors could offer LeBron JamesIt seems like, in all likelihood, LeBron James will either stay with the Los Angeles Lakers or return to the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer. But according to at least one report, the Golden State Warriors could be lurking as a threat to snag the 41-year-old.James is good friends with both Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and based on his history, he does seem to love to stack the deck in his favor as far as teaming up with a couple of other superstars or stars. The Warriors lack the salary-cap flexibility to make James a big offer, but according to Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, they could be able to pay the future Hall of Famer roughly $15 million for next season."If they maneuver their roster and payroll just enough, the Warriors could offer LeBron the $15.1 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception," Kawakami wrote. "And, very importantly, the Warriors would not have to trade anything or unload any major salaries to do it. This would be a direct add."Again, I don’t think LeBron ending up with the Warriors is the likeliest scenario. I think it’s set up for him to return to the Lakers; they’re the one likely option that could pay him a lot more than $15.1 million. Also, LeBron could retire."Midway through last season, the Warriors traded for six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler and finished the season in strong fashion, which led to higher hopes for this season. But they won just 37 games this year and failed to reach the play-in tournament. It is always possible that both James and Golden State feel that joining forces would reopen the team's championship window for at least one more year while James and Curry are still playing at a superstar level. But as Kawakami noted, the Lakers could offer James a lot more money than any other team. In fact, they could even offer him at least something close to a max salary, although whether they would actually do so is a big question, given the multiple roster roles they need to fill and other incumbent free agents they will want to keep.Los Angeles is projected to have as much as roughly $50 million in salary cap space this summer. It paid James $52.6 million this season, and it also wants to retain rising star guard Austin Reaves, who could command as much as $40 million a year this summer in free agency. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Reporter on how much the Warriors could offer LeBron James0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Bayern Munich’s supervisory board is behind withdrawal from Kennet Eichhorn raceKennet Eichhorn (Hertha Berlin) looks on during the DFB Pokal match between Hertha Berlin and 1. Kaiserslautern at Olympic Stadium, Berlin, Germany on December 2, 2025. (Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty Images) | NurPhoto via Getty Images The news that Bayern Munich have exited the race to sign 16-year-old sensation Kennet Eichhorn came as a real surprise. The Bavarians had been chasing the young German for many months and it all seemed to be a great fit. A spot in the midfield has opened up due to Leon Goretzka’s departure, Bayern wish to sign German talent again and Eichhorn needs a step up from the 2. Bundesliga. But it seems two camps have formed at Bayern over the pursuit of the youngster. Bild claims that (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) while board member for sport Max Eberl, sporting director Christoph Freund and head coach Vincent Kompany are all aligned on signing Eichhorn, the supervisory board is not as certain:It currently appears that Kennet Eichhorn will not be joining Bayern. No further negotiations with the player are planned at present. Internally, Bayern bosses are divided over the transfer. Sporting directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are said to be very impressed with the youngster, and coach Vincent Kompany has been involved in trying to convince Eichhorn. However, there are concerns within the supervisory board over the financial terms of the deal. The club’s highest committee is currently unwilling to meet the demands of the player’s representatives.BFW AnalysisIt is important to note that the reported €10 million Eichhorn’s camp is, very purposefully, asking for is the difference between his release clause and his Transfermarkt value. The player simply wants the buying team to pay the full price for him. This is standard practice in football, just as how players signed on free transfers usually get a much higher sign on fee due to there being no transfer fee.Eichhorn is a top talent and is already knocking on the door to play in the Bundesliga. Giving up on a player Bayern’s sporting directors and coach are dead set on, especially such a German talent, because the deal is a little too expensive could prove to be one of those moments Bayern look back on in a few years with a lot of regret. If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor… Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMClose But No Cigar: Dbacks 5, Dodgers 6Jun 2, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Michael Soroka in the second inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images | Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images The Dodgers evened the series on Tuesday night by narrowly beating the Dbacks 6-5. The Dbacks had plenty of runners on base, but were 1 big hit short Tuesday night.Michael Soroka struggled early in this one allowing 2 runs in each of the first 2 innings. He allowed a 2 run HR to Freeman in the first and Ohtani tripled in 2 runs in the second. After the second inning however, Soroka locked it in and cruised through the next 4 innings. After giving up the 4 runs through 2 innings, it was huge for him to be able to get through 6 innings and keep his team in the game.Offensively, Corbin Carroll homered in the 3rd inning. Nolan Arenado also delivered a big 2 run double in the bottom of the 7th that narrowly missed a home run as it was hit a little to flat but plenty hard at 104 mph. Pavin Smith had a big at bat in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded, drawing a big walk to bring the Dbacks within 1 run. Unfortunately though, the team would leave them loaded.I also thought it was worth noting that Juan Morillo and Kevin Ginkel were really good yet again. Ginkel had a fantastic 1,2,3 inning to maintain the momentum and shut down the Dodger offense after bringing the game within 1 run. Juan Morillo came in in the 9th and proceeded to strike out Ohtani and Freeman in dominant fashion. Just really impressive stuff from these guys once again and I think its worthy of a shout out.The achilles heel of this Dbacks team tonight aside from the early runs surrendered by Soroka was the lack of timely hitting. The offense did a great job of getting traffic on the bases but this Dbacks offense once again struggled to have the big at bat and get the big hit. They were just 2-12 with RISP. It is tough to win games with at bats like that with RISP. One such at bat that will certainly get discussed a lot is Geraldo Perdomo’s perplexing bunt in the bottom of the 9th down 1. Ildemaro Vargas had just singled ahead of him putting the tying run on first base with one out, and Perdomo with a 3-1 count laid down a bunt and got thrown out at first. What makes this even more scratching is that lefty Pavin Smith was on deck due to face a lefty. Im sorry, but as the regular 3 hole hitter on this team, you have to be more situationally aware than that and have the confidence to swing the bat in that situation. Major red flag for me the lack of situational awareness as well as the lack of confidence.Overall, this was yet another game the Dbacks could’ve won and there is something to be said about that when you are playing one of the top teams in the league. They will look to take the lead back in the series tomorrow night but will have the tall task of trying to do so against Shohei Ohtani. Tomorrow is a big night for Zac Gallen. This team really needs him to start stepping up and tomorrow would be a great time to start.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMets lose again to the red-hot MarinersSEATTLE, WASHINGTON - JUNE 02: Carson Benge #3 of the New York Mets watches his two run home run during the third inning Mariners at T-Mobile Park on June 02, 2026 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Seattle Mariners proved once again why they’re the hottest team in baseball at the expense of the New York Mets. The Mets gave up three home runs and committed two errors as the Mariners won their eighth straight game. Meanwhile, the Mets’ lineup outside of Carson Benge couldn’t get much going in the 8-3 loss. Benge hit two home runs and accounted for all three of New York’s runs. Benge’s home runs came against Seattle’s starting pitcher Logan Gilbert, who finished with eight strikeouts across five and 1/3 innings. The Mariners’ bullpen took it from there, shutting New York down the rest of the way. Julio Rodriguez, Patrick Wisdom, and Jhonny Pereda added home runs for Seattle.Huascar Brazobán played the role of opener for Jonah Tong and went once through the Seattle order with poor results. He walked the leadoff man, J.P. Crawford, before getting three groundball outs to escape. He wasn’t so lucky in the second inning. Dominic Canzone’s single was followed up by Wisdom’s home run to put Seattle up 2-0. Brazobán gave up a double to Colt Emerson before being pulled for Tong, who struck out Crawford on three pitches to end the inning. The Mets’ rookie outfielders answered back in the top of the third. AJ Ewing hit his first big-league double, which was followed by Benge’s first home run of the night. Benge’s third-inning dinger was the hardest-hit ball of his career at 109.8 mph. Bo Bichette was then hit by a pitch, but Gilbert struck out Soto to end the inning. Soto entered the game 1 for 13 in his career against Gilbert. After he lined out and struck out, Soto got a single off Gilbert in the fifth inning before the right-hander was pulled. The Mets’ infield defense let Tong down in his first clean inning. Randy Arozarena hit a line drive at Marcus Semien that Semien was able to knock down, but he airmailed the throw to first base, allowing Arozarena to advance to second. Next up was Luke Raley, who hit a line drive to first baseman Mark Vientos, who dropped it, easily sending Arozarena to home plate. The Vientos error put the Mariners up 3-2, a lead they never gave up. Tong got into trouble all on his own in the fourth inning. He walked Wisdom, gave up a single to Pereda, then a walk to Crawford to load the bases. Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to score Wisdom and increase the lead to 4-2. It kept getting worse for Tong in the fifth inning when he gave up a three-run home run to Pereda. Buried 7-2 and short on arms, manager Carlos Mendoza left Tong in for the rest of the fifth before going with Cionel Perez to start the sixth. Perez immediately gave up Rodriguez’s solo shot, but didn’t allow any more runs across two total innings. AJ Minter pitched for the second night in a row, stranding a pair in the eighth inning.Benge’s second home run came in the sixth inning, but the Mets’ offense went quietly after the brief sign of life. A single from Brett Baty in the seventh and a walk from Benge in the eighth were all the Mets got going against Seattle relievers Eduard Bazardo and Cooper Criswell. Semien, Vientos, Bichette, Jared Young, and Hayden Senger all went hitless for the Mets. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCould the “New” DarkState Defeat Myles Borne and Tavion Heights on 6/2 NXT?For the past few months, DarkState had been dealing with fighting between two of its members. Dion Lennox has given up his half of the NXT Tag Team Championships in order to pursue a solo career. The only problem was that Saquon Shugars thought he was putting himself before the faction. Lennox actually did pretty well in his solo run, including an impressive performance at the Iron Survivor Challenge last November. But as his success grew, so did the resentment of Shugars.Tensions got even worse when he challenged Myles Borne for his NXT North American Championship. On Night 1 of NXT Revenge, he lost and disappointed everyone. On the May 19, 2026 episode of NXT, they challenged for the NXT Tag Team Championships against the Vanity Project and lost. Afterward, Cutler James and Osiris Griffin beat down Shugars, with Lennox following their lead. With DarkState down to three members, would they still be a strong unit, or would kicking out Shugars prove to be a mistake?New DarkState Take Care of Borne and Heights in a Great MatchEven though Borne beat Lennox two weeks ago, the members of DarkState still aren’t done with him, as they attacked him last week. With three of them versus just one of him, he had to figure out someone who could be his tag team partner. The one closest to him was Tavion Heights, his former faction mate in No Quarter Catch Crew. But things haven’t been good between them either. When Kam Hendrix and Mason Rook showed up to attack Tony D’Angelo on the April 28 NXT, they weren’t the first to do so. Heights was the first man to attack him, and he lost to him the very next week. Borne questioned why he would sneak up on D’Angelo, worried the same thing would be done to him. However, the match was in doubt as Shugars arrived when DarkState made their entrance and attacked James. Eventually, things got settled down, and things proceeded as normal. The match started with Lennox locking up with Borne and immediately shoving him into the turnbuckle. Both of them exchanged holds before Borne put him in a headlock. After about a minute, he escaped, and the two exchanged punches—Borne tagged in Heights, who grappled with him until Griffin was tagged in. Heights kicked him in the face before headbutting him in the stomach. He led him to the opposite turnbuckle, where more kicks were delivered.Borne tagged in, and the two dropkicked Griffin right before he tagged Lennox. The latter got dropped to the ground by them before being thrown into Griffin. After the chaos, Borne and Griffin were the legal competitors. Borne kicked Griffin, but got slammed into the turnbuckle. He responded with a kick and a clothesline, sending both men out of the ring. They got back into the ring, where Lennox was tagged back in. After a backbreaker to him, Borne kicked out of the pin attempt.Lennox then dragged him to the edge of the ring, where he tagged in Griffin, who immediately hit him with a ton of offense. He tried to tag in Heights, but was unsuccessful.Once again, Lennox was tagged in and started to stomp on him. He then flipped him to Griffin, who slammed him to the ground for the failed pinfall. Lennox got him in a headlock, but a backdrop led to him tagging in Heights. He then began to kick, punch, and toss both Griffin and Lennox in an energetic display. But after he got thrown into the turnbuckle and hoisted onto Griffin’s shoulders, Lennox dove onto him for the pinfall victory. However, Shugars was on the balcony, aware of their impressive win. DarkState might be celebrating now, but a confrontation with Shugars will come sooner rather than later.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCould a change of role be what an England international needs at Manchester City?Could a change of role be what an England international needs at Manchester City? The 2025-26 season was a disappointing campaign for Rico Lewis. Lewis fell down the pecking order at Manchester City and made only 22 appearances in all competitions. Matheus Nunes made the right-back position his own last season, and it did seem like Lewis’s lack of size counted against him as the Premier League evolved. Looking ahead to next season, perhaps a new role is in store for Rico Lewis. If not, a summer transfer may be exactly what Lewis needs to play regularly and grow into the player he’s always promised to become. With Bernardo Silva gone, could Rico Lewis step into the vacant spot in the Manchester City midfield?Bernardo Silva has departed Manchester City after establishing himself as a club legend. With Bernardo Silva gone, there is a vacancy in City’s midfield that needs to be filled. City are in the market for a midfielder this summer. However, the possibility exists that a player such as Rico Lewis could slot into midfield.Rico Lewis is a midfielder. He broke through at City as a right-back. However, he plays his best football in the middle of the pitch. Lewis, while small, is technically superb and thrives playing in the half-spaces that City are generally forced to operate in during matches. Lewis also knows Manchester City’s system intimately. While Pep Guardiola has left City, their system shouldn’t change too much with a new manager. Lewis knowing the City way could be vitally important next season. Also, Rico Lewis is highly regarded at Manchester City. He signed a contract extension with the club at the beginning of the 2025-26 season. Clearly, City rate him highly. The England international just needs a permanent role at City to prosper as a player. Perhaps moving into midfield is the opportunity that Rico Lewis needs. If a move to midfield doesn’t occur, a summer transfer could be on the cards for Rico Lewis. There is also a case against Rico Lewis moving into midfield: his size. The Premier League has evolved into a league where winning physical and aerial duels is key. At only 170 centimeters tall, Rico Lewis’s height does count against him. It shouldn’t, as Bernardo Silva never struggled in this regard during his time in England. Rico Lewis could similarly thrive in City’s engine room. However, if Manchester City and Rico Lewis don’t see a way for him to play regularly, a summer move may be best for him. Lewis needs to be playing regularly to fulfill his potential. Being a bit-part player for City doesn’t suit him. A move to the Bundesliga, or to a Premier League club like Brighton, for example, may suit Rico Lewis as a player. What Lewis won’t want is to suffer the same fate he did this season at City again. A summer transfer may be what Rico Lewis needs.Rico Lewis has shown he has the talent to play at Manchester City. That isn’t in question. The issue is he doesn’t have a defined role at the club. A move into midfield may suit Lewis best. That way he may get more opportunities to play. If not, a summer transfer may be on the cards. However, it would be better to see Rico Lewis make it at Manchester City, given that he has risen through City’s academy ranks and is a fantastic story for the club.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMets' Jonah Tong after rough outing in loss to Mariners: 'I just got to do a better job'After allowing just one run across his two previous outings combined, Mets right-hander Jonah Tong had a tough night on Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners. The 22-year-old entered in the second inning and allowed five runs (four earned) over 3.1 IP, with three coming on a home run in the fifth inning to Jhonny Pereda that blew the game open, 7-2. Following the loss, Tong acknowledged his fastball wasn't working against the Mariners' bats and struggled after a solid first inning on the mound, knowing he needs to be more consistent."I obviously didn't have my fastball command for most of the game, so moving forward that's the definitely be the thing I'll focus on the next few games, weeks," Tong said. "Just getting that dialed back in and I'm more than confident it'll rebound right out of it really nicely."He added on his overall performance: "Strong first little inning and then felt like I found my delivery and my stuff towards the end. Obviously it just boils down to that second and third up. I just got to do a better job."While acknowledging the defensive errors that occurred, manager Carlos Mendoza pointed to Tong's issues throwing strikes and getting ahead in counts as the main reasons for the poor outing. In total, Tong threw 83 pitches, but only 54 were for strikes. He used his fastball 35 times (42 percent of pitches), but only had three whiffs on 16 swings and four called strikes. "Having a hard time throwing strikes, that's where it starts," Mendoza said. "His ability to get strike one was below average today. And then deep counts, three-ball counts. Again, we don't make a couple of plays behind him and it cost him. But I think it's just like I said before the game, his ability to compete in the strike zone, and right now he's not doing it."Like Mendoza mentioned, Tong did have to work around two errors in the third inning by Marcus Semien and Mark Vientos that forced him to throw 27 pitches in the frame. After a long time on the mound like that, Tong said he needs to "find a way" to push through when heading back out there again quickly like he did."You just got to calm yourself down after that," Tong said. "There's a lot of pitches thrown a couple times throughout that inning, just got to find a way to settle down after. Just got to find a way. Right, at the end of the day, that's out of my control in a lot of cases and that's the reality we're in so I got to find a way."The home run pitch to Pereda came on cutter, which is something he's worked into his arsenal this year. He knows the pitch needs to improve, especially in big moments like Tuesday night."Part of it is just gonna be you're gonna have some really good ones and you're just gonna have one that gets away from you. And unfortunately had to be that one," Tong said. "But again, I have to do a better job with that pitch. That's plain and simple there."Tong's future as the team's bulk pitcher after an opener next time through the rotation is still up in the air, as they'll need him to improve if he gets another chance. For now, New York will look to avoid a sweep on Wednesday afternoon against the Mariners.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona defender likely to renew contract despite interest from Premier League, Serie ABarcelona defender likely to renew contract despite interest from Premier League, Serie AAndreas Christensen’s future at Barcelona has been the subject of significant uncertainty over the past few months, with clubs from across Europe making attempts to lure the Danish centre-back away from the Camp Nou.Despite his contract expiring on June 30th and a lengthy injury record casting doubt over his long-term role at the club, Christensen has been a wanted man this summer. The former Chelsea defender has been attracting interest from clubs in Greece, Italy and England.Christensen staying at BarcelonaChristensen is not going anywhere. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)According to Mundo Deportivo, none of those approaches appear have swayed the 30-year-old as it seems Christensen has made his decision. The Dane will renew his contract Barcelona for two more seasons and has no desire to leave Camp Nou right now.The defender is now simply waiting to receive the official contract documents from the club, at which point he will review them with his agent and set a date to sign. The formality of the renewal is considered a matter of when, not if.Why Christensen chose Barcelona over better offersAn important season awaits at Christensen. (Photo by Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images)The most telling aspect of the story is that the financial proposals on the table from interested clubs were more lucrative than what Barcelona are offering. Despite that, Christensen chose to stay. The report suggests the Dane feels extremely comfortable at the club and in the city of Barcelona, and his family share that feeling. He also has the full backing of Hansi Flick, who has been one of his most vocal supporters throughout his injury recovery and sees him as a versatile and experienced option in the defensive setup next season. After two seasons decimated by injuries, Christensen is eager to prove himself and repay the faith the coach has shown in him.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe anatomy of a Golden Boot winner - and who could win it in 2026?Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane are both bidding to become the first player to win the Golden Boot twice [BBC Sport]Kylian Mbappe couldn't smile as he collected his Golden Boot trophy at the end of the 2022 World Cup.France had lost the final, even though he had scored a hat-trick. Goals do not guarantee prizes, but a prolific striker gives his team a chance. With the next edition of the world's biggest football tournament imminent, we look at the common attributes of Golden Boot winners and examine some of the leading candidates to finish as the top scorer in 2026.BBC to show Scotland's first World Cup game since 1998The World Cup line-up is complete - here's what you need to knowThe Golden Boot was claimed by Oleg Salenko (left) in 1994, Harry Kane (middle) in 2018 and Davor Suker (right) in 1998 [Getty Images]Veterans need not usually applySome bad news for Harry Kane - history suggests it is unlikely the 2026 Golden Boot will be won by somebody aged 30 or above. It has only happened once, when Davor Suker scored six goals aged 30 at France '98 as Croatia took third place in their first World Cup since gaining independence.Suker is the exception to the rule. On average Golden Boot winners are 24.7 years old. Mbappe brought the average slightly down in 2022, the 24-year-old beating 35-year-old Lionel Messi's tally by just one goal. The record for the youngest player to claim the Golden Boot - which 18-year-old Lamine Yamal might have eyes on - is held by Hungarian Florian Albert, who was one of six joint-winners at Chile 1962 at 20 years and eight months old.You can't do it aloneA successful striker needs two things - a good supply line and for their team to progress deep into the tournament. It is not surprising, therefore, that five-time winners Brazil have provided six of the tournament's most prolific strikers.Their first Golden Boot winner was Leonidas in 1938 and their latest was Ronaldo in 2002.A prolific group stage is a good start for Golden Boot hopefuls, but if your team do not make progress in the knockout stages, you are at a huge disadvantage. That was the fate of Cristiano Ronaldo at Russia 2018. He scored four Group B goals before Portugal exited in the last 16, while Kane scored six times as England got to the semi-finals.There is an exception though - Oleg Salenko at USA '94. His work was done by the time he got on his flight home after Russia failed to progress from Group B, because he bagged five in a 6-1 thrashing of Cameroon and his six goals overall secured the boot for him.Get a head start at your clubThomas Muller had never scored for his country before he landed in South Africa for the 2010 World Cup."I basically got lucky, I hit form at just the right time," Muller said as he left with the Golden Boot.In the 2009-10 Bundesliga season, Muller expected to be sent out on loan or possibly even sold by Bayern Munich. However Louis van Gaal then arrived at the club and he suddenly became a regular.Muller scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists as he played every game of Bayern's league-winning campaign, thus arriving at the World Cup in prime form following a successful club season. His story is a familiar one among Golden Boot winners. Only twice has a player from a club that finished outside their domestic top four finished as the World Cup's top scorer.Be an all-rounderMuller beat more experienced players to the prize in 2010 - by a whisker. The 20-year-old and Diego Forlan of Uruguay scored a goal apiece in the third-place play-off to tie David Villa of Spain and the Netherlands' Wesley Sneijder on five.Villa and Sneijder had the chance to claim the boot in the final in Johannesburg but neither found the net and the quartet had to be separated by the number of assists they had provided.Muller's tally of three proved decisive. And if you're wondering what happens if players are tied on goals and assists, Fifa awards the Golden Boot to the man who has played the fewest minutes.Who are the 2026 Golden Boot favourites?No-one has won the World Cup Golden Boot more than once - but two men have a good chance to become the first to do so this summer. Mbappe scored four goals in World Cup qualifying and as one of the strongest squads in the tournament, it is likely that 2022 finalists France will reach the latter stages of the competition.Another striker seeking a historic second boot is Kane. At 32, he is as we know significantly older than the average winner - but with 54 goals for his club this season, Kane is no average player. If Thomas Tuchel's side go deep into the tournament, Kane is surely certain to score his fair share.Messi has claimed plenty of personal accolades in his career, but there is a Golden Boot-shaped gap next to the eight Ballon d'Or trophies in his cabinet. Aged 38, the 2026 tournament is his final chance. At the other end of the age scale, Lamine Yamal will turn 19 the week before the final. Spain have not progressed beyond the round of 16 since their 2010 tournament win, but Luis de la Fuente's men showed they have the mettle to go the distance at Euro 2024 and were impressive in qualifying.Premier League Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland has scored 26 league goals for Manchester City this season but his bid for the boot might depend on how long Norway stay in the tournament. Haaland scored 16 goals in eight qualifying games. The only player to have scored more than 100 goals for four different clubs and on the back of a successful season in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo will have his sights on the Golden Boot at the age of 41-year-old. Portugal's record of just one World Cup knockout win since 2006 does not bode well, but theirs is a strong squad - including assist king Bruno Fernandes - and there is every chance they could reach the latter stages.Amid a chaotic Real Madrid season, 25-year-old Vinicius Junior scored 21 goals and assisted 14 times across all competitions. But after finishing fifth in Conmebol qualifying and with a squad that is still relying on older players, Brazil might struggle to give Vinicius the platform for a Golden Boot challenge.Ousmane Dembele did not enjoy the same outstanding season as 2024-25, but still managed to score 19 times in all competitions for Paris St-Germain. France have a breathtaking array of attacking options but Dembele is likely to be a regular and could easily compete with compatriot Mbappe for the boot.Argentina could have two more challengers in addition to Messi, with Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez both strong candidates. Martinez scored the winner in the final and earned the Golden Boot with a five-goal haul at Copa America 2024 while Alvarez is one of Europe's most coveted strikers after a fine season with Atletico Madrid. The outsidersThose are the more predictable candidates, but do not be surprised if there are some surprise bids for the boot.Euro 2024 final match-winner Mikel Oyarzabal scored in all but one of Spain's World Cup qualifying games and struck 15 La Liga goals this season. Injuries permitting, he will have Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams providing him with plenty of chances.Could Alexander Isak benefit from being fresh after an injury-hit season with Liverpool and shine for Sweden? Or might his compatriot Viktor Gyokeres be a candidate?Raphinha has also had a season disrupted by injury but is a serious attacking threat and will likely play in Brazil's forward line alongside Vinicius and Igor Thiago, another potential boot winner.Michael Olise will go into the tournament after a season comprising 22 goals in all competitions for Bayern. Although he is principally an assist machine, with 30 for the German champions this season, France will create so many chances that he could be a boot contender too. Finally, what about another relative veteran, Romelu Lukaku? Belgium have got lots of creativity in their team and the Napoli forward can be unplayable at times, so is the sort of player who could have one prolific group game then adds a goal or two more in the knockout stages.Download your World Cup 2026 wallchartNo more delayed flag? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMan Utd agree £35m fee for Atalanta's EdersonEderson has been capped three times by Brazil [Getty Images]Manchester United have agreed a £35m (40.5m euros) deal with Italian side Atalanta for Brazil midfielder Ederson. The 26-year-old will sign a four-year deal at United, with the option to extend it by a further 12 months.Ederson is still to have a medical, with sources saying the transfer should be completed in early July before United's return to pre-season training begins. He will become the club's first signing since Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach last month. The deal will also be subject to £3.9m (€4.5m) in additional payments. It is the first of what could be up to three central midfield additions to Carrick's squad this summer.United are prioritising that area of the field, which has been weakened by the exit of Ederson's compatriot Casemiro, 34, whose contract expires at the end of the month.Ederson, who has three internaional caps, was named in Brazil's 55-man expanded World Cup squad but missed out on manager Carlo Ancelotti's final selection.United are also keen on West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, although the relegated London outfit are looking for a substantial profit on the Portugal midfielder who cost them in excess of £40m when he joined from Southampton last summer.United also covet England's Elliot Anderson, although the Nottingham Forest player would prefer to join Manchester City.In addition to strengthening their midfield, United are also looking to bring in a left-sided player, with Newcastle's Lewis Hall among the players on their radar, and striking support for Benjamin Sesko. They are also still to decide on the precise make-up of their goalkeeping team, which could include Radek Vitek, who enjoyed a superb campaign on loan at Bristol City, where he won all their player of the year prizes. The 22-year-old Czech told BBC Sport in April he is open minded about the future but wants to play regularly, suggesting he will not return to Old Trafford as back-up to Senne Lammens. It is understood former first-choice Andre Onana has been told he can find another club, although it is not clear how easily the Cameroon international's wage demands will be met given he will benefit in an increase from United qualifying for next season's Champions League.Ederson, 26, has proved adaptable across a number of central midfield roles for Atalanta, scoring 16 goals in 180 games for the Serie A outfit in all competitions.Driven by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United have revamped their data analysis operation under Michael Sansoni and the former high-ranking Mercedes Formula 1 performance engineer has had significant involvement in identifying the right targets, working alongside director of football Jason Wilcox.Carrick confirmed he had been involved in recruitment meetings from the point he was named as Ruben Amorim's temporary successor in January.Latest Manchester United news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Man Utd - what do you want to know?0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘Made Me Kind of Question Myself’ – Jalen Brunson Gets Honest About Playing Behind Luka Doncic’s ShadowJalen Brunson was a high-profile guard in college, leading the Villanova Wildcats to two NCAA championships in his three years there. Things changed dramatically when he decided to turn professional.Brunson was selected 33rd overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, a class widely regarded as one of the strongest in recent years. The worst part, at least from his perspective, was landing with the Dallas Mavericks, who also acquired Luka Doncic — arguably the most NBA-ready player in that draft.Brunson averaged 18.9 points while playing around 32 minutes per game in his final college season. Those numbers declined during his rookie year with Dallas, as he posted 9.3 points and roughly 22 minutes per game. The Mavericks also had guards such as Dennis Smith Jr. and J.J. Barea, making his role uncertain. He instantly became a back up with Doncic as the team’s main guy in terms of playmaking and scoring. Brunson shared that it was during these times that he felt unsure about his ability.“The only time is probably my rookie year … playing pickup with the team in Dallas and then obviously watching Luka doing his thing so effortlessly,” he said when asked by a reporter if ever dealt with imposter syndrome in his career..“That was probably the only time, and it made me kind of question myself to see how hard I actually had to work to be in the position that I wanted to be in.”Jalen Brunson addresses doubtersBrunson eventually became expendable for the Mavs. Doncic stayed a little longer. He found his home with the New York Knicks and now, he is playing in a starring role. There are still doubters. There’s one from a former NBA assistant coach saying he is not a 1A and his height is a disadvantage for a contending team. The three-time All-Star said he is aware of the naysayers but he and his team are all about putting in the work.New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson speaks with the media before Knicks practice on Media Day prior to the 2026 NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center. Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images“We’ve been doubted a lot. There’s been a lot of noise from the outside that we could talk about, complain about, do something about – but we’ve always gone back to the gym and worked on our game,” he said.“We can’t be satisfied just because we’re here.”Brunson has a chance to silence doubters once and for all starting on Wednesday when they start their 2026 NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCubs have to make this trade if they want to win NL Central, and Jed Hoyer wants to keep his jobCubs have to make this trade if they want to win NL Central, and Jed Hoyer wants to keep his job originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Chicago Cubs knew that the injuries were going to catch up with them at some point, but as usual, president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, hasn't done enough to ensure that his team has the best possible chance to win at the highest level. Now at 32-28, which still isn't that bad given all the injuries Chicago has dealt with, they sit in fourth place in the National League Central and are 5.5 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. It's pretty much do-or-die time for the Cubs at this point. Either they go out and make the necessary moves to improve this roster from top to bottom, or they continue to struggle and don't find much success toward the back end of the season and possibly even miss the playoffs after making multiple expensive moves over the past six months to ensure they're in a position to compete for a World Series. At this point, the Cubs have no choice but to continue going out and trying to land talented players, with right-hander Seth Lugo now being floated as an option.“Seth Lugo is 36 years old and he's still doing his thing, pitching to contact with dexterous variations on his fastball and curve, with an arsenal that can stretch as deep as eight-plus distinct offerings. He has a 3.55 ERA and 3.13 FIP despite his inflated WHIP (1.35) and low strikeout totals.“Lugo has at least one more year on his contract, so the Cubs can look to him for multiple postseason runs despite his advanced age,” Christopher Kline wrote.Lugo is one of those guys who probably isn't going to wow most when it comes to his stuff, but there's definitely something to be said about the numbers he's put up over the past few years. If there's one thing to question, it's certainly his age, as Kline touched on, but the Cubs aren't really in a position right now to be picky. If they can get him and another arm or two while improving this offense, even if only marginally, Chicago would be in a much better position than it is now.More MLB news:Red Sox should trade Aroldis Chapman to this one team, even if it doesn’t make sensePhillies have no choice but to make this trade to replace Andrew PainterGiants and Cardinals could make perfect trade to win NL Central from Brewers, CubsTigers need to make this non-Tarik Skubal trade with former No. 1 pickBlue Jays continue to be right about Bo Bichette, and this contract problem shows thatJohn Schneider sends message to Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette replacement who has been horrendous0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRed Sox should trade Aroldis Chapman to this one team, even if it doesn’t make senseRed Sox should trade Aroldis Chapman to this one team, even if it doesn’t make sense originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Boston Red Sox season continues to just go off the rails, and as of right now, it doesn't seem like anything is going to change. Even if the Red Sox start to play a bit better, they're already 11.5 games out in the American League East and would probably be better off just moving on from some guys over the next few months. It remains uncertain if that's the direction the Red Sox want to go in, though there seems to be a real feeling around Major League Baseball that at least a few players will be available. One of them should be veteran Aroldis Chapman, as the future Hall of Famer has thrown the baseball at a ridiculously high level this year, but, because of how old he is, he just doesn't make sense on this Red Sox roster any longer. While I think a trade is going to come sometime in the near future, I'm a bit uncertain about where he'll end up. Others don't seem to think there's much other choice but for him to land with the San Diego Padres, as he's continued to be linked to a bullpen that's already one of the best in baseball.“As for "dream destination," it really depends on what Chapman values at this point in his career. Does he want to pitch the ninth inning consistently and really anchor a bullpen? “Or does he want to compete for a World Series and round out arguably the most dominant bullpen in modern MLB history? Chapman setting up Mason Miller, with Jason Adam (0.90 ERA), Adrian Morejon (3.90 ERA) and Bradgley Rodríguez (1.63 ERA) also pitching high-leverage spots, could make San Diego unhittable late in games,” Christopher Kline wrote. The idea of building a super bullpen would make a lot of sense in San Diego. However, I also don't think a super bullpen would require them to land another closer. If anything, it would make more sense for the Padres to get some middle-relief help or even offensive help right now because of what they've done on that side of the baseball.San Diego is 32-26, but it has been one of the worst offenses in Major League Baseball this year. Trading assets for an aging Chapman wouldn't really help that.More MLB news:Phillies have no choice but to make this trade to replace Andrew PainterGiants and Cardinals could make perfect trade to win NL Central from Brewers, CubsTigers need to make this non-Tarik Skubal trade with former No. 1 pickBlue Jays continue to be right about Bo Bichette, and this contract problem shows thatJohn Schneider sends message to Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette replacement who has been horrendousFreddy Peralta’s feelings on staying with Mets revealed, but they don’t make sense0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘At risk of being sold’ – Enrique Riquelme questions Real Madrid finances and raises club sale concerns‘At risk of being sold’ – Enrique Riquelme questions Real Madrid finances and raises club sale concernsThe upcoming Real Madrid presidential election has taken an unexpected turn after candidate Enrique Riquelme publicly outlined the key pillars of his campaign while directly questioning several aspects of Florentino Perez’s leadership.Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Riquelme explained why he decided to enter a race that many observers believe will be extremely difficult to win. Despite Perez’s long-standing control of the club, the presidential hopeful insists some issues need to be openly discussed, particularly regarding transparency, spending and the future ownership structure of Real Madrid.“Well, that’s probably exactly why. Twenty years without elections. It’s a project I’ve been working on for a long time, hoping to be able to help Real Madrid whenever it was needed.“We realise that the club is at risk of being sold—and without any opposition, without a plan.“I told them first: listen, this is a red line. And we’re not going to allow it. Many members cannot allow this.“We’re not doing this for fun anymore. We’re doing it out of an ethical and moral obligation. “There are very few people who meet the requirements to run. Many people know it’s a risk and understand the reasons for opposing Florentino Perez. “But I don’t care, because in the end, I’m a Madridista. I’m a member of Real Madrid.”Riquelme outlines election promisesRiquelme has questioned Florentino Perez on several fronts. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)While acknowledging the scale of the challenge ahead, Riquelme remains confident that his campaign can gain support among club members. The candidate believes his platform offers a clear alternative and claims that his team has developed a series of proposals to strengthen the relationship between the club and its members.“Absolutely. Not only do we have a real chance, but we’re the only ticket with concrete proposals. “First, on the social front, putting the member at the centre of everything. We’ve put forward dozens of concrete proposals for members.“Then there’s the financial plan, where we need to bring in more revenue. That’s being handled well, but there are some absurd expenses. “There are over 140 million euros in non-sports-related expenses, which is absurd. There are many things that need to be done and carried out.”Questioning the financesA major focus of his criticism centred on Real Madrid’s finances and the cost associated with the Santiago Bernabeu redevelopment.Riquelme questioned whether supporters have been given the full picture regarding the club’s financial situation, saying:“If you’re saying this is the club with the highest revenue, the best club, is there something he hasn’t told you? “There’s something financially unclear because the debt hasn’t even begun to be paid off yet.“Of the 1.7 billion the stadium cost, is there anything else? If there is, now is the time to say so, because we have solutions if there’s a financial problem.“What can’t happen is that of the club’s approximately 1.2 billion budget, 45% goes to sports expenses and 55% to non-sports expenses—to corporate expenses.“The norm for a top-tier European club is 80% for sports-related expenses and 20% for corporate expenses. Here, there’s a huge difference.”The European Super League projectRiquelme also addressed Florentino Perez’s long-standing involvement in the European Super League project and argued that Real Madrid should focus on protecting its own interests when dealing with football’s governing bodies.Enrique Riquelme has once again questioned the role of Anas Laghrari. (Picture credit: Instagram/@enriqueriquelmev)Sharing his view on the controversial project, he said, “Let’s see, if Real Madrid is the club that generates the most revenue and contributes the most in terms of television rights, I understand that we need to put pressure on UEFA, the Spanish Football Federation, La Liga, FIFA, and all international organizations that provide or could provide revenue for Real Madrid so that we get as much as possible, because we really are the ones who generate the most.“What cannot happen is the creation of a vehicle where the owners are groups very close to Florentino Pérez on a personal level. “The club is being used to create a competition, but the ownership is at the personal level of people close to him, and he drags everyone in and announces it as he does, against everyone’s interests, harming Real Madrid.”Questioning Anas LaghrariRegardless of whether Riquelme can seriously threaten Perez’s position, his campaign is already bringing attention to issues that have rarely been debated publicly around Real Madrid. One of the strongest examples involves businessman Anas Laghrari, whose role around the club has become a recurring point of discussion among critics of the current leadership.Riquelme made it clear that transparency is his primary concern and called for greater clarity regarding Laghrari’s involvement.“Because there is a lack of clarity. He is making decisions at the club and we are concerned about how one person is bypassing all the usual channels and is a member, a delegate and a season-ticket holder without any transparency.“He does not hold a specific position at the club and we see that, furthermore, through his private companies, he is leading all the processes that are destroying Real Madrid, including now the sale of the club.“If nothing is going on, there’s no problem. Let this man come forward and explain how things stand. Well, there’s no problem, but that’s not what’s happening.”0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPhillies have no choice but to make this trade to replace Andrew PainterPhillies have no choice but to make this trade to replace Andrew Painter originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Philadelphia Phillies haven't been great over their last 10 games, going 5-5 over that stretch. Just a few months ago, the Phillies were one of the worst teams in baseball, and it almost sounds crazy to say, but with the Atlanta Braves going 6-4 over their last 10, the Phillies needed to take a bigger advantage of situations like that. That hasn't been the case, though it's a bit tough to blame the Phillies because of who they've played, with the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cleveland Guardians being their opponents in that span.Regardless, because the Phillies have played much better in May than they did for much of the beginning of the year, now sitting at 30-29, many are starting to believe that a trade will have to happen for this team to get to the next level and make the postseason. There are going to be multiple starters available, and it sounds like replacing youngster Andrew Painter will be at the top of the priority list. One trade in particular that could make sense is landing Kansas City Royals right-hander Michael Wacha, who has proven what he can do at the highest level for more than a decade at this point.“Kansas City has several veteran arms who could draw serious interest at the deadline. Michael Wacha is 34, with an additional year of club control on his contract. He has carried over his success from last season, with a 3.23 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 12 starts and 75.1 innings in 2026. Wacha mixes locations and speeds effectively, with a killer changeup as his signature weapon.“He's slightly outperforming his metrics right now, but Wacha can provide valuable stability for a deeper rotation in Philadelphia,” Christopher Kline wrote.I love Wacha as a starter, though it's fair to mention that the 34-year-old has had some strange spots throughout his career. Prior to the 2022 campaign, he really wasn't much of anything. Since then, he's been one of the more consistent starters in all of baseball.I'd be very interested to see what he ends up going for at the deadline, but if he's attainable for a rather reasonable price, there's really no reason the Phillies shouldn't be involved here.More MLB news:Giants and Cardinals could make perfect trade to win NL Central from Brewers, CubsTigers need to make this non-Tarik Skubal trade with former No. 1 pickBlue Jays continue to be right about Bo Bichette, and this contract problem shows thatJohn Schneider sends message to Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette replacement who has been horrendousFreddy Peralta’s feelings on staying with Mets revealed, but they don’t make senseBarstool personality believes Cubs season is dead, and for good reason0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'No hiding' as Haiti thrash New Zealand in pre-World Cup friendlyBad weather delayed the start of the friendly match between Haiti and New Zealand in Fort Lauderdale (Megan Briggs)Coach Darren Bazeley called it "really disappointing" as his New Zealand side suffered a demoralizing 4-0 World Cup warm-up defeat to fellow qualifiers Haiti on Tuesday, in a match delayed by lightning in Florida. It was New Zealand's heaviest loss in nine years and a rude awakening with a friendly against England next and the World Cup in North America just over a week away. The game at Inter Miami's stadium in Fort Lauderdale -- which teed up two of the lowest-ranked teams at the World Cup -- started 30 minutes late because of the weather. When it did begin, Haiti took the lead after 12 minutes through Ruben Providence. The 32-year-old New Zealand defender Tim Payne, who has become an unlikely social media star, was among a raft of players to come off at half-time.With much of the crowd behind them, Haiti scored after the break through Lenny Joseph, Frantzdy Pierrot and Duke Lacroix as the New Zealand defence capitulated. The All Whites' best opportunity fell to captain and Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood, who had a bicycle kick saved on the line in his 89th game for his country, a New Zealand record."My analyst has already told me that stats for possession, shots and chances were pretty similar (to Haiti)," the Englishman Bazeley said."But the scoreline is 4-0 and we can't hide behind a scoreline that's 4-0."He added: "We can be better, we definitely need to be better."We are at the biggest tournament in the world and we have England coming up in four days."New Zealand, who have yet to win a game in two previous World Cup appearances, are in Group G with Iran, Egypt and Belgium.Haiti, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, have been placed in a daunting Group C that includes Brazil, Morocco and Scotland.Despite the poor result in humid conditions, Bazeley attempted to strike an upbeat tone with Thomas Tuchel's England looming in another warm-up."On our day, when everyone performs to their best, we're a good team," he said."We have not shown that tonight and that's really disappointing."bur-pst/cms0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

Iranian drone attack hits Kuwait airport, wounding people2026-06-03T06:10:45Z DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Kuwait said Wednesday it had suspended commercial flights after an Iranian drone attack hit the country’s airport, wounding a number of people.Defense Ministry spokesperson Brig. Gen. Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi said that “a number of hostile drones” had targeted Kuwait International Airport’s passenger building, severely damaging the building and injuring “a number of individuals.”The drone attack came after Iran and the United States traded missile strikes late Tuesday, with the U.S. military saying it had launched strikes on an Iranian military facility in retaliation for Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait and Bahrain. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Comments 0 Shares 40 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMCalifornia governor’s primary pitted experience against promises of changeCalifornia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra thanks Amy Perez for her support as he passes out cookies at the Planned Parenthood headquarters in Sacramento, Calif., Monday, June 1, 2026. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)2026-06-02T04:02:48Z SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Two Democrats and a Republican were leading in early returns Tuesday in California’s crowded primary for governor, a campaign that tested voters’ appetites for an experienced politician or candidates promising change.Democrat Xavier Becerra, a former state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, pitched himself as a steady leader able to work the levers of government. Meanwhile fellow Democrat and billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer promised progressive change. And Republican Steve Hilton, a conservative commentator and former British political adviser, said he would give the famously liberal state a badly needed reset after years of one-party rule.“Change is coming to California, and it’s long overdue,” Hilton said in Southern California on election night.California puts all candidates on a single primary ballot regardless of party, and the top two finishers advance to the November general election. About 60 candidates were on the ballot, most of them largely unknown to the state’s roughly 23 million voters. The end of the voting period, which began in early May, concludes a chaotic contest without a clear front-runner. Candidates tried to elbow each other out in the final stretch as each sought to convince voters that they were best prepared to lead the most populous state and one of the world’s largest economies.Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and Democrats Katie Porter, a former member of Congress; and Matt Mahan, the mayor of San Jose were among other contenders in the race. Mahan conceded in a speech to supporters shortly after polls closed. Affordability has been a key themeThe through line of the race was how to tackle the state’s notoriously high cost of living. Drivers were paying $6.08 per gallon at the pump as of the end of May, $1.65 higher than the national average, according to AAA. Meanwhile the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office has estimated that the typical home is about $775,000, more than double the national average. And Californians pay the second-highest residential electricity rates behind Hawaii, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Read More Steyer campaigned as a progressive, promising to eliminate private health insurance in favor of a government-run system with no premiums and to raise taxes on corporations and the ultrawealthy like himself. “We should have a system based on fairness, not asking for fairness, where the most privileged pay their fair share, not by charity but by law,” he said.Meanwhile Hilton said he would make Californians’ first $100,000 free of income tax, increase oil production and freeze in-state tuition at public colleges and to try to make the state more affordable.Democratic leaders have not done enough to bring costs down, said Republican Rosamaria Cerezo, a 57-year-old substitute teacher who planned to vote for Hilton.“Both my husband and I have two jobs each just to make ends meet,” she said. Primary system creates uncertaintyEarlier in the race, Democrats worried about possibly being locked out of the general election even though they count 45% of the state’s registered voters compared to Republicans’ 25%. The concern was that their relatively crowded field of candidates could split the Democratic vote enough for the two Republicans to advance under the single primary system, which was first used at the statewide level in 2014. But in the race’s final days, it was Republicans who feared a potential lockout.Brett Christensen, a 55-year-old school safety monitor from Orange who is not registered in a political party but tends to vote Republican, chose Hilton.“He’s the only viable Republican candidate that can make it to the runoff,” Christensen said. Candidates squabbled over their recordsBecerra, who had struggled to gain traction early on in the race, started raising more money and picking up powerful endorsements in recent months. He says his years of political experience have prepared him to lead the state.“I ran for the job because I know how important California is as a shining light to the world,” he said in a speech Tuesday night. But that momentum also made him a target, and his rivals criticized his leadership as health secretary including his handling of an influx of unaccompanied migrant children at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2021, when Becerra’s Department of Health and Human Services was responsible for shelters where they were housed. Democrat Tamara Alton, a 65-year-old marriage and family therapist, was voting for Becerra because of his experience.“I’m going to go with him because I want somebody that knows what they’re doing,” Alton said. Steyer’s campaign spent or booked more than $203 million in ads for broadcast TV, cable and radio, according to tracker AdImpact. On the campaign trail, he was attacked over past investments in fossil fuels and private prisons at a hedge-fund he founded in the 1980s and left more than a decade ago to focus on political giving and climate activism. And some accused him of trying to buy the election. “Some folks are out to prove that they can actually buy elections,” Becerra said in an interview with a popular YouTube channel that he promoted on social media Tuesday. “We’re going to prove just the opposite — money does not buy you leadership in California.”But some Democratic voters said they chose Steyer despite uneasiness with his wealth because of his focus on tackling climate change.Jude Mayer, 24, said she was not thrilled about voting for a billionaire but Steyer “is talking about the environment in the way that I want to hear about it.”A final result could take a whileAll California voters receive a mail ballot, and election officials count those that are received up to a week after Election Day so long as they are postmarked by then. That often results in a drawn-out count, with no winners declared until days or even weeks later. It is the first time in over two decades that there has not been a political superstar in the governor’s race. In 2003, A-list actor and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger rocketed into office in a recall election that ousted then-Gov. Gray Davis; in 2010, former Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown cemented a political comeback by winning nearly three decades after his first two terms; and in 2018, Newsom had already established a national profile after stints as lieutenant governor and San Francisco mayor and won easily.___Associated Press writer Amy Taxin in Orange, California, contributed. APNEWS.COMScott Pelley fired from ’60 Minutes,’ deepening turmoil at CBS NewsScott Pelley, anchor of "CBS Evening News," at the CBS Upfront in New York, May 15, 2013. (Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP, File)2026-06-03T03:07:05Z CBS News fired longtime “60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley on Tuesday, a day after he reportedly said Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss was “murdering the show” and accused its new producer of having “slender qualifications” for the job. The move deepened the turmoil at the nation’s most influential TV news program, days after a leadership overhaul.Pelley, 68, criticized management Monday during a fiery staff meeting with Nick Bilton, the program’s new executive producer installed by Weiss last week, according to a detailed report on the Status website. In a termination notice obtained Tuesday night by The Associated Press, Bilton, a technology journalist and filmmaker with no traditional broadcast news experience, accused Pelley of carrying out an “ambush” against him.“Yesterday, you hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt,” the letter states. Pelley said in a statement that “60 Minutes” has lost its DNA under new management. He accused them of asking him to “inject falsehoods and bias” into his work, without sharing specific details.“Now, the new owner of our network is casting this legend aside, apparently to curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration,” he said in the statement. Pelley is accused of a ‘performative display of hostility’Status, which said it had a recording of the Monday meeting, reported that Pelley had said Weiss was brought in to kill the news outlet, “and she’s doing exactly that.” Weiss was not present for the meeting.Pelley reportedly grilled Bilton about the firings last week of Bilton’s predecessor, Tanya Simon, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Alfonsi had criticized Weiss last year for postponing a segment about deportees sent to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. Read More Pelley said in his statement that those colleagues “stood for fairness against the forces of political bias.”In the dismissal letter Tuesday, Bilton said Pelley’s “performative display of hostility” demonstrated that he has “no interest in contributing to the future success of the show.” An uneasy stretch for CBS NewsSince Weiss took over the network’s news operation last October, it has traveled a bumpy road. Pelley’s termination came just five days after Weiss, who has become a polarizing figure in the media world since taking the reins, told staff in a memo that it was time for a “new approach” at the top-rated newsmagazine. In the memo, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski said their goal for “60 Minutes” was “building a show that thrives in the 21st century.” That could include extending the show beyond a 60-minute broadcast, they said.“60 Minutes” first aired in 1968 and is the longest-running prime-time show in TV history. Its investigative journalism and probing interviews, sometimes with unwilling subjects, have given it the reputation of uncompromising journalism — precisely the trait that Pelley said he feared was under assault. Pelley started working for CBS in 1989. He was its chief White House Correspondent from 1997 to 1999, during Bill Clinton’s presidency, and anchored “CBS Evening News” from 2011 to 2017. He has won 51 Emmy Awards, according to his CBS bio. HANNAH SCHOENBAUM Schoenbaum is a national reporter for The Associated Press, based Salt Lake City, Utah. The dollar briefly surpassed 160 Japanese yen before slipping back slightly. Oil prices rose more than $1 a barrel. Buying of technology shares linked to the boom in artificial intelligence has been driving rallies worldwide.By midafternoon, the Nikkei 225 was up 2.9% at 68,634.74. Shares in computer chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron gained 13.4%, while those for chip testing equipment maker Advantest gained 5.9%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng lost 1.7% to 25,596.92, while the Shanghai Composite index added 0.4% to 4,092.53.Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.9% to 8,806.40 and Taiwan’s Taiex gained 2%.In India, the Sensex lost 1.1%. Markets in South Korea were closed for a holiday. On Tuesday, winners of the artificial-intelligence boom kept driving higher, pushing U.S. stocks to more records. “One thing that stands out in today’s market is how little investors seem willing to pay for protection despite a world overflowing with potential shocks,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. The S&P 500 rose 0.1% to 7,609.78 after drifting between small gains and losses through the day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.4% to 51,307.79, and the Nasdaq composite edged up by less than 0.1% to 27,093.90. All three set all-time highs. Read More A report said that U.S. employers were advertising many more jobs at the end of April than economists expected, a potential signal of continued health for the U.S. labor market. Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s stock soared 19.5% after it reported a profit for the latest quarter that blew past analysts’ expectations. It credited demand from customers building their artificial-intelligence capabilities.Marvell Technology leaped 32.5% for its best day since its stock began trading in 2000 after Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, suggested at a conference in Taiwan that Marvell could be “the next trillion-dollar company.” The last company to enter the expanding club of behemoths was Micron Technology, which is likewise riding the AI wave. Nvidia, which slipped 0.7%, has seen its total value top $5 trillion. Generac climbed 5.7% after saying it signed a deal to provide backup power generators to an unnamed “leading hyperscale data center operator.”Such “hyperscalers” are spending tremendous amounts of money to build huge AI data centers, which are powering what proponents believe is the next great revolution for the global economy. Alphabet is one of those hyperscalers. The parent company of Google said it’s raising $80 billion in cash to help pay for its investments by selling shares of its stock, which lost 3.9% on Tuesday. The company is planning to spend as much as $190 billion on equipment and other investments this year. That’s more than all the stock of The Walt Disney Co. is worth, and Alphabet is forecasting its spending on investments next year will “significantly increase.”Such huge sums raise the question about whether AI can produce the profits and productivity necessary to make all the investment worth it or if there is a bubble in AI investments. Analysts have been saying the broad U.S. stock market may be set for a slowdown following an unrelenting streak of nine straight winning weeks for the S&P 500, its longest since 2023. The rally has been largely due to strong profit reports from U.S. companies, and to hopes that the United States and Iran will reach a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. That would allow oil to flow freely again from the Persian Gulf and hopefully lower its price. In the oil market, prices resumed climbing. Brent crude oil, the international standard, climbed $1.10 to $97.10 per barrel early Wednesday. It’s still well above its roughly $70 level from before the war.U.S. benchmark crude oil advanced $1.17 to $94.93 per barrel. After briefly trading as high as 160.44 yen, the U.S. dollar slipped to 159.90 yen from 159.92 late Tuesday. The euro fell to $1.1625 from $1.1632. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA Insider Reveals ‘Strong’ Connection Between Knicks and Giannis Antetokounmpo And How It Will Play Out Come Next SeasonThe New York Knicks were among the most heavily-linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo throughout the season. Neither the Greek Freak nor his current team the Milwaukee Bucks confirmed it but rumors lived on.Shams Charania is among the reporters relentless in reporting about Antetokounmpo’s move away from Wisconsin and in his latest scoop, he revealed that the Knicks’ Giannis trade interests were strong.“They did make offers, but they felt the Bucks didn’t really want to move Giannis. The Bucks, meanwhile, felt the Knicks weren’t making strong enough offers to entertain trading Giannis,” Charania said during an appearance in Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter’s podcast. There was strong interest from the Knicks. Will they push through with it? Charania said they will set it aside now.“At the end of the day, they washed their hands of that situation. Now, they’re in the NBA Finals, and I think we can all safely say the Knicks are not going to be one of the teams Giannis will be on next season. There are going to be other destinations for that.”The Knicks were able to build a team around Jalen Brunson and they are now in the 2026 NBA Finals to face the San Antonio Spurs. Brunson sacrificed around $110 million during his contract extension signing the Knicks brought in players that complement his skills. The Knicks’ interest is dead for now but it will probably be only get killed ultimately if they win the NBA title.2 teams chasing Giannis AntetokounmpoAntetokounmpo did not play much in this ongoing season. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOne factor not expected to be considered in Vikings' decision to start J.J. McCarthy and Kyler MurrayOne factor not expected to be considered in Vikings' decision to start J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Minnesota Vikings have put themselves in a very strange position over the past two years, and all of that is because of their decision to move on from Sam Darnold and give J.J. McCarthy the keys to the quarterback room. McCarthy, who obviously hasn't proven that he can be a competent starting quarterback in this league, might even be replaced now with Kyler Murray in the mix. It sounds very weird to say that the Vikings would just have a guy like Murray on the roster and not start him. It's evident that Minnesota is in a win-now situation, and Murray probably gives them the best chance to win.According to the latest, there doesn't seem to be a guaranteed decision made just yet, though the prior history of both players isn't going to be taken into effect too much.“The interesting thing about it is that the roster needs to win now,” Albert Breer said about the Vikings QB battle during a June 1 appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show,” H/T Heavy. “So no one’s on scholarship anymore. His draft status doesn’t matter. Whoever is the best player for us to win right now is who Kevin O’Connell is going to pick.“That’s going to be Kevin O’Connell’s mindset in picking his quarterback now. So it’s different than it was last year. They’re not worried about the first-round investment in the player anymore. In fact, the GM who drafted J.J. McCarthy 10th overall is now gone, and there’s a new GM coming in.”Remember now, these are two guys who have proven throughout their football careers that they can be very good players. There was a time when Murray was viewed as one of the bright young quarterbacks in this league. McCarthy was a star at Michigan and one of the highly touted high school prospects in his class. Unfortunately, because both players have struggled a bit over the past few years, none of that will really matter, and honestly, that's good news for the Vikings fan base, as the best player right now should be the starting quarterback week in and week out.More NFL news:Broncos’ Bo Nix criticized and questioned for reason he can’t control49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk continues to be brought up for Jayden Daniels and CommandersDolphins 28-year-old with 183 tackles viewed as option to fix Cowboys’ defenseDolphins’ Tyreek Hill gets unfortunate injury update amid Chiefs and other rumorsBengals and Cowboys could battle for 12.0-sack defender after latest NFL rumorLatest NFL trade rumor should lead to Bears making trade for 12.0-sack star0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCeltics now viewed as free agent suitor for only player who has played well against Knicks in NBA PlayoffsCeltics now viewed as free agent suitor for only player who has played well against Knicks in NBA Playoffs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The NBA offseason isn't here just yet, as the New York Knicks will take on the San Antonio Spurs in what should be one of the more exciting Finals that we've seen in quite some time. However, after that, free agency and the draft will start, and there's a lot to be excited about. The Boston Celtics, in particular, are one of the more interesting teams in the NBA to watch out for this offseason. Boston has proven it will do whatever it takes to ensure it has a chance to win, which makes CJ McCollum a potential option for this organization. That player is none other than McCollum, who was excellent in Atlanta this past season.“Meanwhile, as the Celtics were struggling with the 76ers, the Hawks were giving the Knicks all they could handle, jumping out to a 2-1 lead before ultimately losing the series. And in those two victories, McCollum was brilliant, putting up 32 and 23 points, going toe-to-toe with Jalen Brunson, and hitting clutch game-winning shots…“McCollum’s $30.7 million contract is expiring, and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent. He’s not going to get that value as a 34-year-old, but how much of a discount will he actually have to take? The Hawks would likely love to keep him and will have money to spend, but maybe CJ values a chance at a ring more,” Ben Handler wrote.McCollum was part of a deal that sent Trae Young to the Washington Wizards, and while the veteran guard is a bit of a polarizing player, playing well at moments but not at others, he proved in his series against the New York Knicks that he can rise to the occasion and be one of the lead guards on a roster. The interesting part is that he doesn't have to be that in Boston because of all the talent already there, which makes a potential deal even more intriguing than it would be with other organizations.More NBA news: Knicks would be making worst decision in past decade after random Mikal Bridges trade rumorRaptors must move on from this one player if they want to be viewed as an East contenderKevin Durant now not being viewed as player teams want to deal with if Rockets trade himClippers’ Kawhi Leonard floated as trade optionLakers' chances of landing Giannis Antetokounmpo shut downCavaliers fan swears there's a 95% chance LeBron James returns to Cleveland0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBears have no choice but to make this trade after Myles Garrett deal with RamsBears have no choice but to make this trade after Myles Garrett deal with Rams originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. After multiple blockbuster moves on Monday, the Chicago Bears are now on the clock. The Myles Garrett trade definitely ruffled some feathers for Bears fans, as the hope was that if the Cleveland Browns were going to move on from him, Chicago would at least have a chance to land him. It sounds like Chicago wasn't willing to do what it takes to land a player of his caliber, though there are multiple other guys on the edge who could be a great fit for this organization. One of them is Maxx Crosby, who some think the Bears have no choice but to go after as a result of the blockbuster move that the Los Angeles Rams made.“Crosby is the one and only move to make, now. The Bears watched the team that literally sent them packing a few months ago go out and throw caution to the wind by acquiring Garrett. Why can't Poles do the same thing with Crosby?“We know the Raiders have been willing to let him go, and we know the Bears are arguably a legitimate pass rusher away from being a Super Bowl contender,” Ryan Heckman wrote. It's not crazy to say that the Bears need to improve their edge-rushing unit, and that's something that's been said over the past few months. If Chicago is serious about competing for a Super Bowl this year, there's no debate that adding a player of Crosby's caliber almost feels like a necessity. The Bears have a lot of talent, but missing that one player off the edge could be the reason why they don't work.More NFL news:One factor not expected to be considered in Vikings' decision to start J.J. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNuggets trade pitch sends Nikola Jokic’s 3-point shooter to Lakers for Luka Doncic helpNuggets trade pitch sends Nikola Jokic’s 3-point shooter to Lakers for Luka Doncic help originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Reports have begun to indicate that the Denver Nuggets are looking to move on from some of their top players, though it doesn't really make much sense.Unfortunately, the Nuggets seem to be taking the cheap way out, even though they have the opportunity to pay some of the current guys on the roster they want to keep around in the long term. It's unfortunate that Denver is going to take this approach, if it does, as it has Nikola Jokic and a clear opportunity to win an NBA Finals once again if it makes the right moves. However, other teams can't worry about that too much and can only look to get better if the Nuggets are willing to move on from their guys. One of those teams will be the Los Angeles Lakers, as Cameron Johnson could be a very nice fit on their roster despite a rough year with the Nuggets in his first season in the Mile High City.In a recent trade proposal, the Lakers would accomplish just that.Nuggets receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia, 2033 second-round pickLakers receive: Cameron Johnson“The Lakers have some salary cap to work with this offseason, depending on what they do with Austin Reaves and LeBron James, so taking on a more expensive expiring contract to boost their immediate championship chances could be their best move.“Johnson would be an ideal player to have next to Doncic. The 6-foot-8 forward shot an impressive 43% from three-point range for the Nuggets this season, and could be the perfect floor spacer to have in Los Angeles' starting lineup,” Logan Struck wrote. If the Lakers only have to move on from a second-round pick, LaRavia, and Vanderbilt, this feels like a trade that's too good to pass up on. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that Rob Pelinka would make this trade in a heartbeat. While Johnson didn't play too well last year, I'd bet on his fit and talent in the long term for this Los Angeles organization.More NBA news: Lakers trade proposal swaps two players and a first-round pick for $90 million All-Star to pair with Luka DoncicNew report shows how much Lakers will favor Austin Reaves over LeBron James in NBA free agencyLatest report considered ‘unfortunate’ news for Lakers, Luka DoncicThunder not expected to pursue Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they’re looking at another All-NBA playerCeltics now viewed as free agent suitor for only player who has played well against Knicks in NBA PlayoffsKnicks would be making worst decision in past decade after random Mikal Bridges trade rumor0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Lakers have many flaws on both sides of the basketball court, but the hope is that with Luka Doncic in the short and long term, they can address many of them by making the right moves. Unfortunately for the Lakers, those right moves won't be as easy as they sound, as teams are going to be looking for multiple assets to ensure they get the proper returns for the players the Lakers view as very good. One player who could make a major impact in Los Angeles is Jarrett Allen, and after the season the Cleveland Cavaliers just had, getting swept in the Eastern Conference Finals by the New York Knicks, there's definitely a feeling that Allen could be available. However, the recent trade proposal might be a bit expensive for Los Angeles to consider.Los Angeles Lakers receive: Jarrett AllenCleveland Cavaliers receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia, unprotected 2031 first-round pick“For Los Angeles, this move is about solving a problem that has existed for years. The Lakers have consistently searched for a reliable defensive anchor who can control the paint without demanding touches offensively. Allen checks every box…“Allen's impact goes beyond shot blocking, though. His presence would allow perimeter defenders to pressure opposing ball handlers more aggressively. Defensive rotations become simpler. Transition defense improves. Rebounding becomes a strength instead of a concern. Those are exactly the qualities championship teams need,” Enzo Flojo wrote. The only problem here for me is giving up a first-round pick. The Lakers don't have many future first-round picks at all, and with all the changes to the draft lottery, second-apron problems, and more, first-round picks have become more valuable than ever.At the same time, there's no debate that Allen is going to require giving up at least one first-round pick, as he's an All-Star-caliber starting center. I also think he can fit very well with Doncic, as the MVP candidate year in and year out has proven that he loves playing with centers who can make plays at the rim on both sides of the court.More NBA news: New report shows how much Lakers will favor Austin Reaves over LeBron James in NBA free agencyLatest report considered ‘unfortunate’ news for Lakers, Luka DoncicThunder not expected to pursue Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they’re looking at another All-NBA playerCeltics now viewed as free agent suitor for only player who has played well against Knicks in NBA PlayoffsKnicks would be making worst decision in past decade after random Mikal Bridges trade rumorRaptors must move on from this one player if they want to be viewed as an East contender0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNew report shows how much Lakers will favor Austin Reaves over LeBron James in NBA free agencyNew report shows how much Lakers will favor Austin Reaves over LeBron James in NBA free agency originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. It's unfortunate that the Los Angeles Lakers have gotten to this point with LeBron James, but the 41-year-old certainly is at the back end of his career, and there's absolutely no debate that at some point over the next year or so, it's going to be his final season in the NBA.The Lakers simply have to decide whether they want the final year of James, even if that comes at a ridiculously high cost. The fact of the matter is that James is still a very good player and has the opportunity to help a team win a championship, but he probably isn't worth $40 million to $50-plus million, which is what he can get.The Lakers also have to consider other players, including Austin Reaves, who could be in line for a $40-plus million contract. From the sound of the latest report, it seems like the Lakers are going to favor Reaves in these contract discussions over James, even if that's seemingly the unpopular thing to do in the fan base."There's two big differences between LeBron and Reaves right now. One, LeBron is a short-term solution. Reaves is viewed by the franchise as a long-term cornerstone. So if it comes down to, would you rather pay Reaves $40 million for the next five years, or LeBron $40 million for one year, they're going to prioritize the long-term contract here," Jovan Buha said."Reaves is more of a priority for the Lakers than LeBron is. That's just a fact. The second part of it is that Reaves is going to have a market. And LeBron—maybe he wants to go to Chicago, or Brooklyn, I do not foresee that—but the issue with LeBron is that all of the teams that are going to want LeBron are going to have somewhere between a vet minimum offer and a non-taxpayer mid-level exception offer.“So LeBron can't leverage the market against the Lakers the same way Reaves can. Reaves can go get a monster contract offer from Chicago or Brooklyn, and put pressure on the Lakers to be like, 'They're about to pay me $40 million annually. Maybe I'll take a [hair less] than that, but you need to give me that fifth year, and it needs to be pretty close to $40 million.' LeBron is not going to have the same leverage."In the Lakers' defense, it would make sense to keep Reaves on the roster over James, even if there's still an argument that James is a better player than Reaves. The Lakers and their fan base have to understand how much younger the Oklahoma product is, and that's going to be the biggest factor in most of these decisions.More NBA news: Latest report considered ‘unfortunate’ news for Lakers, Luka DoncicThunder not expected to pursue Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they’re looking at another All-NBA playerCeltics now viewed as free agent suitor for only player who has played well against Knicks in NBA PlayoffsKnicks would be making worst decision in past decade after random Mikal Bridges trade rumorRaptors must move on from this one player if they want to be viewed as an East contenderKevin Durant now not being viewed as player teams want to deal with if Rockets trade him0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAjax close in on €6 million deal for forgotten Real Madrid midfielderAjax close in on €6 million deal for forgotten Real Madrid midfielderDani Ceballos appears to be heading towards the Real Madrid exit door, with Ajax now closing in on an agreement that could finally bring an end to his difficult spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.According to an update from Matteo Moretto, negotiations between Real Madrid and Ajax are progressing well, with the Dutch giants emerging as the clear favourites to sign the Spanish midfielder this summer. The proposed transfer is expected to be worth around €6 million, a figure that would allow Madrid to move on a player who has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in recent years.Ceballos entered the summer knowing his future likely lay away from the Spanish capital. Despite remaining a valued squad member at times, opportunities have become increasingly limited, and both player and club now appear ready to part ways.Ajax advancing towards agreementCeballos is set to move to Ajax. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)Ajax have been working on the operation, with their technical director Jordi Cruijff playing a key role in discussions. The Dutch club see the 29-year-old as an experienced addition capable of strengthening their midfield while also bringing valuable experience from both La Liga and European competition.Although a return to Real Betis was reportedly the player’s preferred outcome, financial realities made such a move difficult. Ajax have instead moved quickly to position themselves at the front of the queue and are now close to securing an agreement.Notably, the midfielder is also expected to accept a reduction in salary in order to complete the transfer, which shows his desire to play regularly again after a frustrating campaign at Real Madrid.A difficult season for CeballosCeballos hardly played at Real Madrid last season. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images)Ceballos’ situation worsened towards the end of last season when he reportedly fell out of favour following an argument with Alvaro Arbeloa.Since that incident, Ceballos has not featured for the first team and has effectively been left on the sidelines as the club planned for the future.Last season, the Spaniard featured in just 16 La Liga matches and started only four of them. For a player entering what should be the peak years of his career, those figures simply are not enough, which is why a move to Ajax looks like a win-win situation.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMPolice locked in negotiations with man in Bakersfield holding hostagesFBI agents respond after a man barricaded himself inside a building with hostages Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Bakersfield, Calif. (AP Photo/David Dennis)2026-06-02T22:49:01Z Police were locked in negotiations Tuesday night with a man holding hostages inside a building that houses a Chase bank branch and school district office in the Southern California city of Bakersfield, officials said.Officers responding to a call of a bomb threat arrived at the scene around 1 p.m. at the Chase Bank building in downtown Bakersfield, and discovered a man had barricaded himself inside “with several community members,” the Bakersfield Police Department said in a statement. Through negotiations, two of the hostages were released and the rest are in “good health,” city police Sgt. Eric Celedon said. “We have every single resource at our disposal out here to bring this to the safest resolution possible,” he said.Nearby buildings were evacuated, including city hall and the police headquarters, and some roads were temporarily closed, according to officials. Officers established a perimeter around the building and nearby businesses, authorities said. Celedon warned the public to stay out of the area, explaining that this is still a very active situation.A spokesperson for JPMorgan Chase said its branch is on the ground floor of the building and is currently empty. The company is working with authorities. The department’s crisis negotiation team was in contact with the suspect by telephone. About a dozen police cars were on scene along with one tactical vehicle and multiple emergency responders, and FBI agents were on the scene. Read More Jacob Davidson, a livestreamer known as Dad’s Gone Live, was a block from the bank at his family’s tattoo shop when he started getting calls from his subscribers alerting him to the bomb threat.“I went into the bank’s parking garage and watched the cops enter the back of the bank. This is the biggest police presence I’ve ever seen in this town,” Davidson said. “Now I’m watching them set up the trauma tents with the green, red and yellow tags, and black tags too, along with a command center about a block away.” By Tuesday night, his livestream captured through a window in the building a woman rocking back and forth before crouching further down below the window. Later, two hands could be seen waving.Law enforcement agencies often protectively set up trauma tents — which are color-coded to help sort people based on the severity of injuries — just in case they become needed during an emergency situation.Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh said she is closely monitoring the situation.“The best way the public can help at this time is by avoiding the area and allowing law enforcement officers, negotiators, and other trained professionals the space and opportunity to safely carry out their duties,” she said in a statement.___Associated Press reporter Rebecca Boone in Boise, Idaho, contributed. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFlorentino Pérez: “I will announce Real Madrid’s first major signing on Thursday”Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who is expected to comfortably win the elections this weekend, talked in an interview with El Español and revealed that he is going to announce a major signing on Thursday, one signing that would come to fruition if he gets re-elected.This Thursday, I will announce Real Madrid’s first major signing for next season. Everyone is aware of my sporting vision: to acquire the finest players and continue our winning tradition. We anticipate player announcements before Sunday, rest assured. There is no doubt, people know me. I have consistently inspired enthusiasm during my 23 years as president. Those familiar with my tenure understand that the greatest players will join Real Madrid, and some Champions League titles will follow.Florentino also explained why he decided to call for elections.I detected a movement emanating from those associated with Real Madrid’s darkest period, the ominous years of 2006 to 2009. Riquelme’s father was also involved with Calderón. Two decades later, the children or relatives from that era are emerging. Here, all the unsavory elements have converged: those aligned with Calderón, with Tebas, with the Federation… Those from that sinister chapter are determined to reclaim Real Madrid at any cost. They seek to seize control of the club for their personal gain, an action I have never taken at any point during these 26 years since my victory. You can read the full interview here.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFarke and Ampadu futures are key[Getty Images]BBC Radio Leeds' Adam Pope believes two of the "key" issues for the club to sort this summer is the futures of boss Daniel Farke and captain Ethan Ampadu. Speaking on the Don't Go To Bed Just Yet podcast, Pope says he thinks Farke has been "essential" to Leeds' progress and the captain is this side's "most important player".Both are still under contract at Elland Road but only have a year left until their deals expire. On the issues the club must sort as soon as possible, Pope said: "The two things, Farke himself, the manager who is still under contract, so is Ethan Ampadu, and we know the relationship between the two of them is really important because he's his most important player. Farke's been essential to this progress for Leeds United as well. "For me, they're the two key things going forward, and it's retaining players."Pope thinks Leeds may also feel a "difficult juggle" in what players may leave in order to raise funds for transfers. He added: "I think that if they want to make some room to bring some quality players in, then they'd have to sell some players too. But I think this summer is very much about quality over quantity. "There are three key areas we've talked about a lot on this podcast, I'm including the goalkeeper in that too. That would be essential, and with the amount of money that we think we're talking, then it doesn't go that far. But Leeds have a core of players that can keep them in the division and have evolved this year as well and will probably be able to do a little bit better, but they just need that sprinkle of quality to go with them, and I think that's where they will be focusing this summer."Listen to the full podcast below or on BBC SoundsFind more Leeds content here0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBills newcomer fights to overcome brutal injury setbacksORCHARD PARK - Perhaps more than at any time since he beat long odds and made the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster as an undrafted free agent in 2023, the start of the 2025 season had Ben VanSumeren feeling like he was finally about to be part of something special. After suffering a season-ending knee injury midway through 2024, VanSumeren missed the Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl championship. Sure, he got a ring but it sure felt a little empty considering he played only 235 combined snaps as a fullback and special teams contributor.Having rehabbed his way back to full health, VanSumeren won a roster spot in training camp after making a full-time switch from linebacker to fullback, and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo were excited about utilizing him in a certain package of plays.Ben VanSumeren’s comeback was over on the first playBut VanSumeren never played a single snap as a fullback in 2025. As the defending champions, the Eagles hosted the league’s season-opening Thursday night game at home against archrival Dallas and as a core member of the kicking teams, VanSumeren was on the field covering the opening kickoff. It was literally the first play of the NFL season, and it was VanSumeren’s last.As Dallas’ KaVontae Turpin was breaking off a 27-yard return, VanSumeren was engaged with Dallas’ Marist Liufau when his right knee caught in the Lincoln Financial Field grass and bent in a direction it wasn’t supposed to. He was carted off the field with a torn patellar tendon, and all the excitement about getting to play in an offense that included quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley and wide receivers AJ Brown and Devonta Smith was blown up just like that ligament.“I don’t really think about it much anymore,” said VanSumeren, fresh off the practice field Tuesday at One Bills Drive where he is trying to win a roster spot with the Buffalo Bills. “It was really challenging for me, really for the past eight months or so, I've kind of just tried to disassociate myself from that moment.”Can’t blame him, especially after he’d worked so hard to not only get back from his first knee injury, but changing sides of the ball in the process.“There was a lot that had gone into that,” VanSumeren said. “I felt like I was in a position where I was really involved in the offense and we obviously had a good team going into the season. I was optimistic about what was to come. I was given a lot of feedback going into that game about how the season was going to look for me and what their plan was for me to do big things. And it was taken from me on the first play. So yeah, it's difficult; I still try not to think about it much.”VanSumeren was released by the Eagles in late February and the Bills signed him on April 29 at a time when the only fullback they had on the roster was undrafted rookie free agent Jackson Acker.Last year, Reggie Gilliam played a career-high 20% of the offensive snaps as Buffalo’s fullback as offensive coordinator Joe Brady used him primarily as a lead blocker for James Cook. Gilliam did an outstanding job and Cook won the NFL rushing title with 1,621 yards. When Gilliam signed a three-year free agent deal with the rival Patriots at a price point the cap-strapped Bills couldn’t compete with, it felt like a big loss for Buffalo’s offense.Bills are deciding whether fullback still mattersHowever, when the draft ended and the Bills still hadn’t replaced him, Brady - now in a new role as the team’s head coach - was asked if there was a need for a fullback and he said, “I don't think we necessarily have to have a fullback. We have such a unique tight end room that you can do a lot of different things with those guys. That's part of our job as coaches is to figure out what type of skill sets and the type of run schemes that you can kind of get creative with, without (a fullback). There is plenty of time for us to figure that out.”Well, it was barely hours after that comment that Brandon Beane signed both Acker and VanSumeren, and now they will compete for a roster spot, assuming they give Brady a reason to have a fullback.“At the end of the day you don't just keep one to keep one, they’ve got to make the roster,” Beane said. “And if not, maybe you keep an extra tight end or you keep an extra receiver. You can't just have a guy out there and the defenses aren't worried about him, or he's not a factor and he's getting in the way of James Cook.”How Ben VanSumeren made the move from linebacker to fullbackVanSumeren played linebacker and special teams at Michigan State but in his rookie 2023 season Sirianni saw that the athletic 6-foot-2, 231-pounder could have a future at fullback and started giving him practice reps. Those increased in 2024 and he eventually played 22 snaps at the position before getting hurt.“Originally, we were low on tight ends so it was going to be a game day thing where I could play defense and in the event that something happened on offense, I'd play offense,” he said of 2023.“I took that opportunity to rep it a little bit in practice and ran with it, and ended up making the full transition to fullback (in 2024). This will really be my third season going into it, because I did it in year two in Philadelphia as well. It's not foreign, it's something that I've been doing and studying so it's been a good transition and I like it and I feel natural.”Obviously, his injury history is a concern, but as Beane said, “Nothing's without risk, right?”Beane thought it was worth taking a swing because VanSumeren is a player he had noticed on film, particularly his work on special teams.“You’re tracking players that could or could not make the squad and the dude just stood out on teams,” Beane said. “We medically checked him out, but you get the risk, you do. At the same time, he's a football player. Now you're trying to figure out how good can he transition to fullback?”Sal Maiorana has covered the Buffalo Bills for more than four decades including 37 years as the full-time beat writer/columnist for the D&C. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona suffer major blow as top defensive target moves closer to new deal with current clubBarcelona suffer major blow as top defensive target moves closer to new deal with current clubBarcelona’s hopes of signing Josko Gvardiol may have suffered a significant setback after fresh reports suggested that Manchester City are already working on securing the defender’s long-term future.According to SPORT, the Premier League side has opened discussions with the Croatian international over a new contract, a move that would further strengthen their position amid growing interest from several European clubs. It must be noted that although strengthening the defence is not currently Barcelona’s main priority, the club has continued to monitor opportunities in the market. Gvardiol has emerged as one of the few defenders who perfectly match the profile Hansi Flick values, thanks to his ability to operate both as a centre-back and a left-back.That versatility, combined with his age and experience, has made him an attractive option for Barcelona’s sporting department. However, the latest developments suggest prising him away from Manchester City could become even more difficult.Manchester City moving to secure Gvardiol’s futureBarcelona were interested in Gvardiol. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images)Speculation regarding Gvardiol’s future increased recently after the defender was asked about his long-term plans. While discussing his situation, the Croatian left the door slightly open regarding what could happen in the future, stating,“I’m happy at Manchester City; I have everything I need. After the Club World Cup, we’ll see what happens,” he said while on international duty. However, the latest information points towards Manchester City’s desire to keep him at the heart of their project for many years to come. The report claims that the English club is extremely satisfied with the defender’s performances and have already begun negotiations over a new agreement. In fact, discussions are believed to include an improved salary package that would better reflect his growing importance within the squad.City are in no pressure to sell Gvarddiol. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)Reports also indicate that both parties are working in a positive atmosphere, with a long-term extension keeping him at the club for another four or five years.Barcelona may need to look elsewhereAt Barcelona, this development could force the club to reconsider their defensive plans.Even before the contract talks emerged, any potential deal for Gvardiol was likely to be extremely complicated due to the financial demands involved. Manchester City invested heavily to bring him to England and have little incentive to entertain offers. The situation becomes even more challenging when considering the ongoing transition taking place at the club. With several senior figures having departed in recent years and Pep Guardiola no longer leading the project, Manchester City are eager to build their next era around a core group of younger stars and Gvardiol is viewed as one of those players.0 Comments 0 Shares 39 Views 0 Reviews

The Dutch team will offer the Spanish midfielder a significant salary, which was the main obstacle preventing his departure from Real Madrid during the last few transfer windows. It has been a rough season for Ceballos, who could benefit from leaving Real Madrid once and for all.
