Manchester City are counting on a key man to play a big role next season
Manchester City are counting on a key man to play a big role next seasonAs the Real Madrid presidential elections continue, one of the candidates, Enrique Riquelme, went big with his election promises. Riquelme promised that Rodri and Erling Haaland would be signed by Real Madrid if he wins the upcoming election. Riquelme’s promises infuriated Manchester City. City reacted angrily to Riquelme’s claims about Erling Haaland. Yesterday, they quickly refuted anything that Enrique Riquelme said and also provided clarity on Rodri’s future. Manchester City’s comments on Rodri are positive for next season.Manchester City are planning for Rodri to play a key role at the club next season. The Manchester Evening News’s chief Manchester City writer Simon Bajkowski posted Manchester City’s response to Enrique Riquelme’s claims about Rodri on X. Bajkowski reported that City are planning on Rodri playing a key role for the team next season. Bajkowski’s tweet also stated that Rodri is contracted with City for next season.Rodri’s future may be uncertain but City aren’t planning for him to leave.Given that Rodri has a year left on his contract, his long-term future at Manchester City is in doubt. Rodri has previously revealed that playing in La Liga and for Real Madrid does appeal to him. City are determined to sign Rodri to a contract extension. What the future holds for Rodri remains to be seen. However, based on Simon Bajkowski’s post, City are planning on Rodri being with them for next season. The FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders need Rodri for the role he plays in midfield, and they also need his experience and leadership. Manchester City cannot tip all of their leaders out in one summer. With Pep Guardiola, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva having left the club, City need Rodri to remain at the club for next season when a new era gets underway. It seems that is what will occur based on Simon Bajkowski’s post.Rodri’s long-term future at Manchester City is far from certain. However, City do seem intent on keeping the Ballon d’Or winner for next season, so Enrique Riquelme’s claims are simply coming across as false promises from a Real Madrid presidential candidate.

Daniel Cormier Backs Justin Gaethje’s Controversial Ilia Topuria Divorce Jab Ahead of UFC Freedom 250
In less than 10 days, the UFC will make history by heading to the White House for the first time in its 33-year existence to host the Freedom 250 card, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. And it is safe to say the seven-fight spectacle is loaded from top to bottom. The main event will see Ilia Topuria attempt to defend his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje after capturing the belt at UFC 317 last June, with the opportunity to become the first fighter in UFC history to successfully defend championships at both 145 and 155 pounds. While the rivalry between Topuria and Gaethje has remained largely respectful, tensions have escalated in recent days. The interim lightweight champion recently took a personal jab at Topuria’s highly publicized divorce from ex-wife Giorgina Uzcategui. For those unfamiliar, ‘El Matador’ recently released a promotional video to build anticipation for the fight. In the clip, the Spaniard placed a symbolic white rose on a mural of Gaethje, alongside murals of Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway, and Alexander Volkanovski, former opponents he has knocked out in his last three outings. The insult from Gaethje came after Topuria further fired back at Gaethje following a viral video in which the American’s father analyzed the Spaniard and referred to him as being short.Speaking with Fox Australia, Gaethje did not hold back when asked about Topuria’s trademark habit of presenting a rose to opponents he has beaten. He said, “All that guy is a gimmick. He calls himself the king. He thinks he’s a God. What an annoying little bastard. I couldn’t imagine being in a room with him for 30 minutes, listening to him talk about himself. And I can say this: I would leave him. That’s all I’m saying. I would leave him. No way I would put up with his shit.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by MMA Fighting (@mmafighting)ALSO READ:Georges St-Pierre Explains What Stopped a UFC Superfight Against Anderson SilvaThe remarks appeared to resonate with Daniel Cormier, who knows a thing or two about deeply personal rivalries from his long-running feud with Jon Jones. The former two-division champion believes the added animosity only enhances the intrigue surrounding the June 14 showdown. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Cormier said, “I always like when there is trash talk accompanying a fight, especially a championship fight and a fight of that magnitude. You need to have those things that surround the fight that make the general fan go, ‘I’ve got to see this.”He further added, “To see now that the pleasantries aren’t as evident as they might have been before, I like it. I like the storylines… I am a fan of this thing… Now we’re starting to get that (the fight feels bigger).”June 28, 2025, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA: ILIA TOPURIA 17-0-0 of Ali-Cante, Spain defeats CHARLES OLIVEIRA 35-10-0-1NC of Guaruja, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil by KO in round 1 during UFC 317 at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Las Vegas USA – ZUMAo117 20250628_zsp_o117_094 Copyright: xMikaelxOnaxWhile many fans felt Gaethje crossed a line with his comments about Topuria’s personal life, some of the UFC’s most memorable rivalries have featured similar levels of animosity. Feuds such as Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir, and Cody Garbrandt vs. TJ Dillashaw all carried a deeply personal edge that helped elevate the stakes. Whether the growing hostility between Topuria and Gaethje translates into an unforgettable fight remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the build-up has become far more compelling ahead of their June 14 clash at the White House.

Senate in overnight session as Republicans debate limits on $1.8B Trump settlement
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., pauses for questions from reporters before votes on the immigration enforcement funding package, at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, June 4, 2026. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)2026-06-05T05:20:37Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is working overnight to pass legislation that would fund President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agencies as Democrats and some Republicans have tried to add language to permanently block Trump from creating a $1.776 billion settlement fund. Earlier in the day, Republicans turned back a Democratic effort to block the fund, which would compensate the president’s allies who say they have been politically persecuted. But there were potentially more amendments to come overnight as Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana has said he will try again to block the settlement. The amendments were a test of party unity and a threat to the immigration spending bill, as some Republicans have repeatedly voted to block the fund. The first vote on the settlement was held open for around three hours as several GOP senators decided whether to support it. “I feel optimistic that we’ll get there in the end,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Thursday evening, while acknowledging he was not sure how the votes would turn out. Thune has been pushing GOP senators for weeks to keep the bill focused on the funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol, which Democrats have blocked since early this year, and to avoid adding new provisions that could complicate its passage. If an amendment limiting the settlement were to pass, Thune said, it would be “problematic” when they send the bill to the House. It could also mean a White House veto of the immigration spending bill, which has otherwise unified Trump and Republicans. The last time the Senate abruptly changed a Homeland Security funding package, in March, the House simply refused to accept it and left town. Read More Settlement fund roils Senate GOP conference Trump’s judgment fund, which was part of a settlement that resolves his lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns, has angered many Republican senators. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said this week that the fund would not move forward. But Trump, who has been at odds with Senate Republicans in recent weeks, raised new doubts about the settlement’s future Wednesday afternoon — just after the Senate had voted to start debate on the immigration bill — when he told reporters that the settlement is “very important” and said “I don’t know” whether it is dead or on hold. “I’d have to ask the lawyers,” he said. The Senate rejected a second amendment from Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina on Thursday that would also have banned the settlement fund but would have moved the money to a separate anti-fraud fund at the Department of Justice. Most Democrats voted against the amendment, guaranteeing its defeat, but more than 10 Republicans supported it. Tillis said the settlement fund, some of which could potentially go to Trump supporters who beat police and attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, is a political liability for the party. “If Blanche says this is largely inoperative, why not use this moment to codify that?” Tillis said. “Otherwise, you’re exposing every one of our members who are in cycle to having to deal with this between today and Election Day, and that makes no sense for something that the DOJ says they’re not moving forward with.” Amendments will be offered late into the night It was unclear how Republicans would vote on additional amendments. Cassidy, who lost re-election last month after Trump endorsed his primary opponent, said he still planned to offer an amendment to ban payouts from the settlement. He told reporters he may also offer an amendment to block a separate part of the settlement that would grant Trump and his family immunity from IRS audits. Several Republican senators said they supported the idea but would have to see the final language before they decide. Sen. John Cornyn, who also lost reelection last month after Trump endorsed his opponent, said he agrees with the “thrust of it” but would wait to see the amendment. Republican Sen. John Curtis of Utah said the same. Thune said he believes the final bill should pass without language to prohibit the settlement. “This is about border funding,” Thune said. “It’s about law enforcement, it’s about ICE and CBP. So I’m trying to, you know, keep it about the main thing.” Democrats continued to offer amendments through the night, including on Trump’s tariffs, his war with Iran and his immigration enforcement campaign. “Amendment after amendment, vote after vote, Republicans are going to have to answer to the American people,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said at the beginning of the day. ICE and Border Patrol money has been delayed for months Passage of the roughly $70 billion bill to fund ICE and the Border Patrol would end the blockade by Democrats who demanded policy changes after the fatal shootings of two protesters by federal agents in January. The bill would fund the agencies for three years, through the end of Trump’s term. Senate Republicans are using a complicated procedural maneuver to get around the filibuster and pass the budget legislation with no Democratic votes. But it has taken weeks to get the bill to the Senate floor as Republicans navigated various obstacles to passage created by Trump and the White House — including a $1 billion proposal for White House security and Trump’s ballroom that they eventually scrapped and the fierce bipartisan backlash to the settlement fund. Democrats say any funding bill for the Homeland Security Department should place restraints on federal immigration authorities, including better identification for federal officers and more use of judicial warrants, among other asks. After federal agents shot Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Trump agreed to a Democratic request that the Homeland Security bill be separated from a larger spending measure that became law. But bipartisan negotiations went nowhere, and the department funding lapsed in mid-February with no agreement on changes to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics.Congress eventually funded the rest of the Homeland Security Department at the end of April with Democratic support, but ICE and Border Patrol remained without regular funding. ___Associated Press writers Kevin Freking and Lisa Mascaro contributed to this report. Cole Palmer, Estêvão, and Didier Drogba star in Nike’s latest World Cup ad-extravaganza
COBHAM, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 2: Cole Palmer and Estevao Willian of Chelsea during a training session at Chelsea Training Ground on December 2, 2025 in Cobham, England. (Photo by Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images) | Chelsea FC via Getty Images Neither Cole Palmer nor the injured Estêvão will get to actually play in the World Cup, and Didier Drogba’s long retired, but they are still some of the biggest names associated with Nike, so they all get cameos at least in the latest ad-extravaganza from the company ahead of the World Cup, which starts … next week already!Nike were late entrants, relatively, to the world’s game, but their quadrennial World Cup ads have become legendary, starting with 1998’s Mas Que Nada-soundtracked Brazil-at-the-airport scene, or, still my personal favorite, 2002’s “Secret Tournament”. (The Athletic have a very nice oral history of that amazing three-minute video, which you should read if you have access.) 2014 was another memorable year, with David Luiz and Eden Hazard among the cavalcade of big names all on the same pitch (or at least appearing to be on the same pitch), but these things are always bigger than just an ad campaign.Anyway, 2026’s effort doesn’t really break any new ground — except maybe in length, clocking in at a whopping six minutes — but it does have a few funny moments, including Channing Tatum cosplaying as Erling Haaland. Estêvão’s only in it for a couple touches while Palmer shows up alongside his buddy Central Cee in what is a rather ironic sequence given that he wasn’t even selected to go. Drogba checks in as a pundit, though I’m not aware of him being one this time around for any outlet. (César Azpilicueta and Olivier Giroud will be part of the BBC’s coverage though.)Enjoy:

Barcelona not interested in Juventus fullback despite recent reports
Barcelona not interested in Juventus fullback despite recent reportsBarcelona are in the market for multiple players this summer, with the likes of Julian Alvarez being closely linked with a move to the Camp Nou.However, apart from signing a top striker, Barcelona are also keen on shoring up their ranks in the left-back unit, especially amid Alejandro Balde’s inconsistent form. While Joao Cancelo is expected to sign a permanent deal, Barcelona have also been linked with a move for Juventus fullback Andrea Cambiaso.Barcelona not pursuing CambiasoCambiaso not an option for Barcelona. (Photo by Chris Ricco/Getty Images)According to Mundo Deportivo, Cambiaso is not currently being considered as a potential reinforcement by Barcelona’s sporting management, despite widespread reports. The 26-year-old Italian international holds a contract with Juventus until 2029 and carries a release clause of around €50 million, having joined from Genoa for €15.5 million in 2022. This is not the first time his name has been connected with Barcelona, having surfaced in similar reports back in March, but on both occasions the club’s position has been the same.Cancelo remains the priorityBarcelona are prioritising a move for Cancelo. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)Barcelona’s clear preference for the left flank is Joao Cancelo, whose loan from Al-Hilal expires on June 30.The club intend to sign the 32-year-old Portuguese international permanently, and with one year remaining on his Saudi contract, negotiations are ongoing.Another left-back name that has since fallen away is Nathaniel Brown of Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year-old German has attracted serious interest from both Arsenal and Bayern Munich, with the Gunners reported to hold the advantage, effectively ending any Barcelona involvement in that particular race.

The Manchester City chairman promises that City aren’t going anywhere despite Pep Guardiola leaving the club
The Manchester City chairman promises that City aren’t going anywhere despite Pep Guardiola leaving the clubAs Pep Guardiola has now left his post as Manchester City manager, a new era is set to get underway at the club. Part of Pep Guardiola’s legacy is that he has established City as the dominant force in English football. Also, City are well-placed for what lies ahead under a new manager. Guardiola has left City in a great position for the future. In a new interview, Manchester City’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has warned City’s rivals that his club is built to win. Manchester City’s high standards will not be allowed to slip despite Pep Guardiola having left the club.Khaldoon Al Mubarak has reminded everyone that Manchester City is built to win.In his annual end of season interview with mancity.com, Manchester City’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has reminded the football word that Manchester City is a club built to win. Despite the fact that Pep Guardiola is no longer Manchester City’s manager standards won’t be allowed to slip at the club. Khaldoon Al Mubarak explained: “This is a club that is designed and built to win. We are used to being successful, because it’s in our DNA, winning.”“I look at where the Club was in 2008, and then I look at every part of these last 18 years. Roberto Mancini brought that first Premier League title to this Club, we will never forget those moments. It was a great period then, [after] a first FA Cup win in many, many years. Then Manuel [Pellegrini] came in, [the] same thing, another Premier League title and more success.”“And then Pep came in, and it was getting that mindset, that DNA of a winning club. And now, this Club is the way we all know it right now. What Pep has given us has taken us to the next level, and I think we’re so thankful for what he’s helped build here.”City are well-established after Pep Guardiola’s reign as manager, and the challenge for the club is to remain where they are and grow.No one expects Manchester City to continue winning trophies at the level they did under Pep Guardiola. That is next to impossible, and Guardiola’s achievements were unprecedented. They will never be matched. However, outside of the trophies won, Pep Guardiola has taken City to the next level as a club. It is a club set up to contend for and win major trophies. That standard won’t be compromised when a new era gets underway at City.Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak is right to point this out. While Pep Guardiola is gone, City remain one of the best-run clubs in English and European football. Everything is now established at the club. Manchester City’s facilities are second to none, and they remain a club where everyone is pulling in the same direction. The goal is success at Manchester City and that will not change with a new manager.Khaldoon Al Mubarak has warned Manchester City’s rivals that City are a club built to win. Pep Guardiola has lifted City to new levels and raised the bar for the club as a whole. However, City will continue to live up to their high standards, which sets the club up brilliantly for their new era.

Japan change World Cup training sites in Mexico over conditions
Japan's players take part in training session at the Club Monterrey Training Center on June 4 (Julio Cesar AGUILAR)Japan's World Cup squad had to twice change their training pitches in Mexico because of the poor condition of the fields, Japanese media said, in a turbulent start to preparations.Hajime Moriyasu's side initially earmarked a practice pitch belonging to Tigres UANL in Monterrey after landing in Mexico this week. But the condition was poor after recent bad weather and the team switched to a field reserved for Japan's under-19 team, the Sports Hochi newspaper said.Dissatisfied with that one, the squad moved again to a practice ground used by Club de Futbol Monterrey on the second day of practice, the report said. The tournament in North America starts on June 11 and Japan's first game is against the Netherlands in Dallas three days later.Masakuni Yamamoto, technical director of the Japan Football Association, told reporters the players were "calm" about the logistical issues."We came to this conclusion (to change practice venues) because we searched for a better environment," he said, according to Japanese media."It's because of bad weather, so you cannot help it. We want to make sure we prepare thoroughly."From early next week the squad will start practising in its base camp in Nashville, Tennessee. "We have been told that all the preparations are going smoothly in Nashville," Yamamoto said.Japan also face Sweden and Tunisia in Group F.hih/pst

How Adam Silver reacted to Donald Trump’s plans to attend NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden
Photo by Roberto Schmidt/Getty ImagesNBA commissioner Adam Silver welcomed Donald Trump’s reported plan to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden as another sign of New York’s excitement around the Knicks. The Knicks’ return to the Finals has already made New York the center of the basketball world. Trump’s expected appearance would only add to the sense of occasion on a night that already felt historic.Silver chose to focus on the moment rather than the politics. His answer highlighted Trump’s ties to New York and the unique buzz around the Knicks’ first home Finals game in nearly three decades.Photo by Soobum Im/Getty ImagesAdam Silver welcomes Donald Trump’s interest in New York Knicks Finals gameBen Golliver on X shared Adam Silver’s reaction to Donald Trump’s reported NBA Finals plan, with the commissioner tying the potential appearance to the city’s excitement around the Knicks.“President Trump is very much a New Yorker. I’m thrilled another New Yorker wants to participate in the enthusiasm and the joy around this Knicks team,” Silver said.Silver’s response was measured, but it still showed the league understands the scale of the moment. A Knicks Finals game at Madison Square Garden already carries massive attention, and Trump’s presence would only increase the spotlight. He avoided making a political statement, instead presenting Trump as another New Yorker joining the city’s celebration. That kept the focus on the Finals rather than the wider debate around the president.Donald Trump Game 3 plan adds another layer to New York Knicks spotlightTrump is reportedly planning to attend Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on Monday, June 8. The game would be the Knicks’ first home NBA Finals contest in 27 years. The setting makes the visit notable even before the security and media attention are considered. Madison Square Garden will already be charged by the return of Finals basketball, and a sitting president in the building would turn the night into a larger national event.Trump has said he wants to support his hometown team, and reports have linked the planned visit to an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan. Silver’s comments suggested the league is prepared to embrace the attention rather than treat it as a distraction. The Knicks still have the basketball work in front of them, but Game 3 is now carrying more than normal Finals pressure. Midfielder rejected by Arne Slot now begging Andoni Iraola for a chance
Midfielder rejected by Arne Slot now begging Andoni Iraola for a chanceArne Slot is OUT as Liverpool head coach. The 47-year-old got his marching orders last weekend having failed to convince Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes in his end-of-season review. The Reds entered the 2025/26 season as runaway favourites to defend their Premier League title - adding £450m worth of talent in the summer transfer window. But Slot slumped from top spot to FIFTH - enduring humiliation in both domestic cups along the way.Liverpool only managed to secure Champions League football on the final day of the season and that didn’t bode well for the Dutchman’s prospects.Harvey Elliott wants a second chanceAccordingly the decision was made to curtail his spell one year out from the expiration of his contract. Liverpool will pay around £7m in compensation and a replacement has been quickly sourced.Andoni Iraola is finalising his appointment as Liverpool head coach and big changes are coming to Anfield this summer.Iraola, 43, may opt to take a closer look at players passed over by Slot - and according to a report in Sports Boom Harvey Elliottbelieves he’s got a chance.Elliott, 23, endured a torrid spell on loan at Aston Villa - who declined to purchase the England under-21 midfielder for £35m on a permanent deal.Following a campaign in the wilderness the playmaker returns to the AXA Training Centre with one year left on his contract.Elliott wants to stay at LiverpoolAlthough it’s been mooted that Richard Hughes would listen to bids of around £30m for the versatile midfielder Elliott wants to stay and fight for a role in Iraola’s lineup.“Harvey Elliott is determined to drag himself back from the football wilderness after Arne Slot's shock Liverpool exit handed him a surprise Anfield lifeline,” the report reads.“The Reds still regard the former Fulham youngster as a valuable asset and, with a new manager set to arrive following Slot's departure, Elliott believes he has a genuine opportunity to force his way back into first-team plans rather than seek a permanent move elsewhere.”Clubs from around the Premier League - most prominently Leeds United - have been linked with a move for Elliott. Overseas interest comes from RB Leipzig - who could not agree terms with Liverpool over a permanent fee last summer.

Superstar in Spain, doubted in Brazil: Can Vinicius convince a nation?
Carlo Ancelotti's news conference was coming to an end when he addressed the elephant in the room in his typically subtle, elegant way."People sometimes say Brazil don't have a star right now. Maybe that's true," the Brazil manager said before the friendly against Panama in late May."We don't have a Pele, a Romario or a Ronaldo, but we can have a shared sense of responsibility, and that can be a very powerful thing."The expectation was for Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior, by now, to have become the Selecao's leading figure.Yet, four years on from a penalty shoot-out exit against Croatia in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals, doubts remain around the 25-year-old forward.Such is the situation that, following Brazil's 2-1 defeat by France in March, the debate in his homeland pivoted to whether Vinicius still deserved a place in the starting XI."Should Vinicius be dropped?" asked one of Brazil's most traditional football panel shows, ESPN's Linha de Passe.Even with the arrival of former Real Madrid serial winner Ancelotti, arguably the most impactful coach Vinicius has had in his club career, the question that has defined his national team story so far continues to follow him.Its gist is simply this: "Why can't Vinicius reproduce his Madrid form with the Selecao?"Vinicius is the Brazil player with the most goal involvements in this World Cup cycle, but his numbers are still modest – seven goals and six assists in 28 matches."Playing at the same level as he does for his club is complicated," Cleber Xavier, who worked as Brazil's assistant coach in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, told BBC Sport."Once you get to the national team, the reality is much harder than it looks from the outside. At your club, it's different training, a different way of playing, different team-mates, the day-to-day where things happen and develop."The clearest example is [Lionel] Messi with Argentina. He was always questioned about that and only managed to do it in 2022. But that's because Argentina managed to build a team. In Qatar, we faced Croatia and they were almost like a club side because they repeated so many players. That's how you give a player a proper structure."Vinicius has never shied away from the conversation."At our clubs, every three days there's a new opportunity," he told Caze TV in a recent interview."So if I play badly in two games out of 10, nobody is going to talk about it that much. With the national team, it's a long time between one match and the next. The pressure is always huge and people always expect me to perform at my best."If I go to the World Cup, score four or five goals and we become champions, the whole story changes. Then people will say I was preparing myself for the World Cup all along, even in the games where I didn't play well."Injured Neymar could miss Brazil's World Cup openerWorld Cup: Every squad as they are announcedCan Vinicius make Brazil fans love him?Playing for Brazil has never been straightforward for Vinicius.A former international manager, speaking anonymously to BBC Sport, said it is his belief that the 2024 Ballon d'Or runner-up suffers from "the anxiety of wanting to be the protagonist".Being the protagonist is of course the status Vinicius has been used to throughout his career. And that is partly reflected as he heads into his second World Cup. He has 14 commercial deals, more than any other Brazilian player. For all his success off the pitch, however, Vinicius has yet to inspire the same emotional connection Neymar still has with the country's football-loving public. It's a paradoxical situation: one superstar, past his peak but still loved; another, at the top of his game but still waiting for the same level of affection."I believe Vinicius is loved by Brazilian fans – just not at the same level as Neymar," argued Eduardo Musa, a marketing specialist and a former adviser to the former Barcelona and Paris St-Germain forward."There are a few important differences between them. Neymar already has a very clear legacy with Brazil. He is the national team's all-time top scorer. Vinicius, meanwhile, still hasn't had the chance with Brazil to deliver what he delivers for Real Madrid."That's one point. The other, from a more technical perspective, is that Neymar stayed at Santos from 2011 to 2013 and had two wonderful years there. Brazilian fans watched him every week. Vinicius left earlier. He was playing at Flamengo, but he was not yet an undisputed starter and there were still doubts about his technical level simply because he had not had enough time to prove himself."A recent poll from Datafolha, one of Brazil's leading research institutes, showed the majority of fans - albeit a slender majority - still trust veteran Neymar, as 53% backed his inclusion in the World Cup squad."I think that remains very vivid in their minds, what Neymar did in Brazil before moving abroad," said Musa. "And there is also the personality factor, the charisma, those things matter a lot too."I'm someone who absolutely admires Vinicius. I think he is a fantastic player, truly fantastic. But Neymar has had more years at the top and, because of that, more time to build unforgettable moments."'I'm the one everyone talks about now'For some time, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has been working to give Vinicius a more central role within the Selecao. In March, after the serious injury that ruled Rodrygo out of the World Cup, Vinicius was handed the famous number 10 shirt and selected to appear at a news conference before the France match, something that had not happened for two years. The plan was clear: for Vinicius to become the face of Brazil. But with Neymar's surprising return, the number 10 has gone back to the 34-year-old Santos forward.Despite that, Neymar's litany of physical issues in recent times means expectations of him are not what they once were. Many eyes will be trained on Vinicius as he aims to shine in Brazil's quest for a sixth title and leave the doubts behind for good."He improved a lot when he started doing more individual work, improving his finishing, his collective game, his combinations and one-twos. It was through that work that he matured a lot, with plenty of goal contributions," explained Xavier, currently an assistant coach for the Venezuela national team."But for him to really maximise his individual qualities, which is what happened at Real Madrid, he depends on the collective structure around him. In 2022, we were still in a rebuilding process. Now maybe is the time."Vinicius says he is ready for the spotlight."I'm the one everyone talks about now because I've had five or six positive seasons at Real Madrid and have already spent years among the best players in the world," he said."That naturally brings more responsibility. And that's the responsibility I want, because I know I can do more, improve, keep evolving, and I know where I can reach because my ceiling is always very high."World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

Graham Platner to hold Maine rally with Rep. Ro Khanna as scandals shake up campaign

Bukaty)2026-06-05T04:01:42Z PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Graham Platner, the insurgent Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine, will hold his first major campaign rally on Friday night as reports continue emerging about his history with women.Last weekend, his campaign wrestled with stories about sexually explicit messages that Platner sent to several women while he was married. Then on Thursday, The New York Times reported about his relationships with previous girlfriends. Some viewed him positively but others described him as volatile and insulting. One woman said Platner twisted her arm during an argument and locked her in a room. Platner called that allegation untrue. But with Maine’s primary around the corner Tuesday and Democrats desperate to rally behind a candidate who can defeat Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November, there’s been little sign of voters or political allies backing away from Platner, who has pitched himself as an imperfect person who has redeemed himself. Some dismissed news of the text messages as a private matter, one that should be addressed solely by the married couple. Others argue that the need for Democrats to take back control of the U.S. Senate from Republicans is too important to cast aside imperfect candidates. Yet they’re also wrestling with the question of whether more controversial information surrounding Platner could come out ahead of the November election.“I think a lot of people are afraid,” said Deb Dagnan, chair of Maine’s Piscataquis County Democrats. “They’re waiting for the other shoe to drop after he gets the nomination. Then what do we do?” Read More Key to the SenatePlatner is key to Democrats hopes’ to take back the U.S. Senate this year. Yet he’s been bedeviled by near-constant controversies involving his disclosure of a since-covered tattoo of a Nazi symbol, his history of inflammatory online comments and the texting revelations.Nevertheless, Platner’s most prominent supporters have continued to back the candidate, including Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Ruben Gallego. Platner is scheduled to appear in Bar Harbor Friday evening with progressive Rep. Ro Khanna of California, as well as Democratic candidates for U.S. House and governor, as a part of a “get out the vote” rally in the coastal resort town. The event is taking place just days ahead of the state’s June 9 primary election, where Platner is expected to secure the Democratic nomination. His top opponent, Gov. Janet Mills, suspended her campaign in late April. He’ll do so under reignited scrutiny amid reports that he and his wife, Amy Gertner, have had marital difficulties and sought counseling after he allegedly sent sexually explicit text messages to other women. According to The Wall Street Journal, Gertner had told the campaign in August about the messages, which she had discovered on his phone last year, to make sure they weren’t a liability to the campaign. Platner’s campaign team reportedly decided that the texts were private and being handled by the couple, who were married in 2023. Genevieve McDonald, a former campaign staffer for Platner, told The Associated Press that the candidate was “sexting multiple women while married” and that “the campaign tried to assess that as an election vulnerability.” Shortly after the news came out, Platner posted a five-minute video taken by Gertner, who avoided speaking directly about her husband’s reported texts but dubbed the broader coverage as “gossip” and said “being married is hard.”Voters worry that more scandals lurkGertner’s emotional comments about working on her marriage have resonated with some women, who say they are shocked that a former campaign aide would betray someone’s trust and the issue should remain between the couple. “It’s none of my business as far as I’m concerned,” said Joanne Mason, a local Democratic leader from south-central Maine. “And I would hope that people wouldn’t judge any one person on their own private marriage.”Valerie Tate, a Democrat from Belfast, described Gertner’s honesty about trying to work on their mental health and marriage as admirable. “That is not a scandal,” Tate wrote in an email. “That is integrity. Personal growth is not a disqualification from public life. For many of us, it is precisely what made us worthy of it.”However, Tate conceded that her mind wasn’t fully at ease. With the public still learning about Platner’s past, there is a chance something could emerge as a dealbreaker for voters.“Of course, there is that concern as there would be in any race with somebody we don’t know all the dramas and the journeys they’ve been on,” she wrote. “Something could come out that would be disqualifying.” Past controversies simmerThis isn’t the first time Platner has faced questions about his past. He had a tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol, which he had covered up after starting his campaign. Platner has said he didn’t realize the meaning of the tattoo. However, a former girlfriend told the Times he joked about it being a Nazi symbol and called it “my Totenkopf.”There’s also been much attention on Platner’s former Reddit posts, which were dismissive of military sexual assaults and used homophobic slurs, for which he has apologized.Platner has never held elected office and has fashioned a straight-talking, progressive, populist-style campaign focusing on issues such as income inequality, lack of health care accessibility and the rising cost of housing. In return, he’s attracted thousands at his rallies and campaign events and collected millions in campaign funds to further boost his messaging.“People want somebody new,” said Paige Zeigler, a former Maine Democratic lawmaker and head of the Waldo County Democrats, on why Platner’s staying power has remained strong. “They want somebody that they feel that they can embrace. And Platner is riding that wave.” ___Kruesi reported from Providence, Rhode Island. PATRICK WHITTLE Whittle is an Associated Press reporter based in Portland, Maine. Longtime CBS correspondent Scott Pelley lived many workers’ fantasy: Telling your boss off
Scott Pelley, anchor of "CBS Evening News," at the CBS Upfront in New York, May 15, 2013. (Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP, File)2026-06-05T04:04:21Z NEW YORK (AP) — As if Scott Pelley’s years in a glamorous, globetrotting, seven-figure dream job weren’t enough, he’s pulled off one more thing to stir your envy: a cutting takedown of his boss that went loudly public. The “60 Minutes” correspondent’s searing rebuke of CBS management this week, in which he questioned his bosses’ credentials and motives, may have ended in his firing, but amounted to the sort of mouthing-off that workplace peons typically only fantasize about.“That’s the American dream — to be able to tell off your boss and walk out the door,” says Zach Tyra, a 40-year-old data analyst from Jones, Oklahoma, who found a kindred spirit in the newsman, recalling his own experience with a former boss he said was clueless. “I couldn’t do what Scott Pelley did because I didn’t have the safety net or the resources or the network that he has. I couldn’t tell my boss to stick it. I just had to sit there and eat it.” Pelley’s message may have been delivered in the measured baritone of someone polished by decades on the airwaves. But his backtalk stirred many who’ve felt the simmering rage of feeling a clueless boss was turning their days into a nightmare.“It’s also kind of weird, like, Pelley isn’t some blue-collar hero. There’s a wide gap between, like, Pelley and your local everyday guy down at the hardware store,” Tyra says. “But I think everyone can relate to standing up for what they believe.” A staff meeting that went deeply awryPelley’s dressing-down came in a Monday staff meeting with the new executive producer of “60 Minutes,” Nick Bilton, brought aboard by Bari Weiss, who became CBS News’ editor-in-chief in October. The correspondent reportedly grilled Bilton about the firings last week of Bilton’s predecessor, Tanya Simon, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, accusing management of “murdering” the program, a revered cornerstone of TV journalism and a mainstay of Sunday nights for nearly six decades.“She has no qualifications for her job,” Pelley said of Weiss, according to the media news site Status, which reported he then turned his ire at Bilton. “You have slender qualifications for this job.”In firing Pelley, Bilton called his outburst an “ambush” of “remarkable incivility and contempt.” But, with Pelley becoming a proxy for the American worker, others cheered. Read More Parry Headrick, who runs a public relations firm in Boston, was immediately transported to his days as a young reporter at a small newspaper, where he had been carefully chronicling the trials of people who fell ill from what was believed to be exposure to toxic waste. He had earned the trust of one family only to find editors plastered a headline on the story that reduced the sick child to a “toxic boy” and caused Headrick to lose all faith in his bosses. He screamed at the paper’s publisher and editor-in-chief before quitting.“I lost my goddamn mind when they did that. And the story with Pelley resonated so hard specifically because of that,” says 57-year-old Headrick, who thinks many people can see Pelley’s point of view. “There exists in most Americans the desire to speak truth to power.” That such an outburst arose in the news business may be no surprise; journalists pride themselves as a truth-to-power, voice-for-the-voiceless bunch. Staff meetings with reporters sassing editors are common, and in newsrooms everywhere, managers have been subjected to the type of tough questions they pay their people to ask others. The threshold for dismissal varies from place to placeThe line separating acceptable discourse with fireable offense is as different in each workplace as the settings themselves, whether a dive bar or diocesan chancery.“In the real world, there are layers of politeness and cordiality that don’t really exist in journalism,” says Headrick, who cheered Pelley “pushing back on something larger.”Clare Haynes had a middle-management role at a nonprofit when she had her Pelley moment two decades ago. She was three weeks into a job where she thought she’d been brought aboard to institute changes that would achieve an innovative work culture. But every suggestion she made was dismissed. Her boss said his boss wouldn’t buy the idea. “Are you saying you’re too weak to ask?” she snapped. His mouth fell open. He stared at her silently for a full minute.Haynes survived, lasting three more years at the firm, but things were never the same.“I didn’t lose my job, but I paid the price, being seen as maverick,” says 55-year-old Haynes, of Royal Leamington Spa, England, who now runs a coaching firm that trains executives how to handle difficult workplace conversations.Johan Konst was working at a Swedish media company when he felt pushed to the limit seven years ago. After years of high-stress, hard-selling days pushing advertising he didn’t believe in, he finally said his piece, delivering a blunt, profanity-dotted message to his boss. He was promptly shown the door.“It’s the best thing that ever happened to me,” says 34-year-old Konst, of Amsterdam, who walked away with a nice severance check. “At some point, this had to happen.”___Matt Sedensky can be reached at [email protected] and https://x.com/sedensky MATT SEDENSKY Sedensky is a national writer for The Associated Press. twitter mailto 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

Chinese leader Xi Jinping will travel to North Korea next week in first visit since 2019
People watch a TV screen showing a file image of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, right, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, Friday, June 5, 2026. (AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon)2026-06-05T02:19:26Z BEIJING (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping will travel to North Korea next week, both countries announced Friday, in what will be his first visit in nearly seven years. His trip will the latest in a series of steps by China to reinforce its close ties with its nuclear-armed neighbor, whose leader Kim Jong Un has reached out to Russia in recent years, notably by sending troops and conventional weapons to support its war against Ukraine. Kim has likewise been cozying up again to China, the North’s biggest trade partner and aid provider, in the past year.“As North Korea builds closer ties with Russia, China seeks to use Xi’s trip to reassert its influence over Pyongyang and safeguard its strategic interests in northeast Asia,” said William Yang, an analyst for the International Crisis Group.Xi will make a state visit from Monday to Tuesday, state media from both nations said in brief dispatches. His last visit was in June 2019. The trip will come just weeks after Xi hosted U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in quick succession in Beijing.North Korea’s nuclear weapons program has long been a major concern for the United States, which opposes it. The U.N. has imposed economic sanctions on North Korea because of its nuclear and missile development. The announcement of the trip came a day after North Korea unveiled a new facility to produce the ingredients for nuclear bombs. South Korea’s military has assessed the new nuclear facility as a uranium enrichment plant. Read More During a visit to the plant, Kim announced plans to bolster the country’s nuclear forces “at an exponential rate.” Experts say the plant’s disclosure implies that Kim was eager to cement his country’s status as a nuclear weapons state ahead of Xi’s visit. The experts say Kim wants international recognition as a nuclear state so that he can demand the lifting of the sanctions. They say Kim would ultimately push for arms reductions talks with the U.S. to win concessions in return for a partial surrender of his nuclear capability. Kim has been focusing on expanding his nuclear arsenal since his high-stakes diplomacy with Trump collapsed in 2019. Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to restore diplomacy with Kim, but the North Korean leader has said the U.S. must first drop its demand for North Korea to denuclearize as a precondition for talks.Xi and Kim met in Beijing in September and pledged mutual support and enhanced cooperation. Kim was in the Chinese capital to attend a Chinese military parade alongside other foreign leaders including Putin.Russia and China, both veto-wielding members of the U.N. Security Council, have previously frustrated the U.S. and others’ efforts to toughen international sanctions on North Korea, despite its banned weapons tests. At their meeting in Beijing last month, Putin and Xi expressed their opposition to “foreign policy isolation, economic sanctions, military pressure and other methods of creating threats to the security” of North Korea, according to a statement from the Kremlin. Embracing the ideas of a “new Cold War” and a multipolar world, Kim has pushed for a more assertive foreign policy by expanding ties with countries locked in confrontations with the United States.Xi, who traveled widely in his first years in power, has curtailed his international trips sharply since the COVID-19 pandemic. His last overseas trip was to South Korea last fall for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, where he talked with Trump.___Kim reported from Seoul, South Korea. Asian shares drop, with South Korea’s Kospi down more than 5%
Currency traders watch monitors near a screen showing the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) and the foreign exchange rate between U.S. dollar and South Korean won at the foreign exchange dealing room of the Hana Bank headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, Friday, June 5, 2026. (AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon)2026-06-05T05:03:35Z HONG KONG (AP) — Shares have fallen in Asia, with South Korea’s benchmark dropping more than 5%, after sharp declines for some big artificial intelligence-related stocks in the U.S. U.S. futures also retreated. On Wall Street on Thursday, computer chipmaker Broadcom’s shares sank 12.6% when it gave a forecast that fell short of investors’ expectations, raising concerns over the wider AI and technology sector. U.S. memory chip maker Micron Technology dropped 7.7%, and cybersecurity company CrowdStrike Holdings fell 3.8%.Still, the benchmark S&P 500 climbed 0.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.7% to a record. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite edged 0.1% lower. But in Asia, investors dumped key AI-related shares, with South Korea’s SK Hynix plunging 8.4% and Samsung Electronics shedding 5.4%. The Kospi dropped 5.1% by midday to 8,185.62. The index has roughly doubled in the past year lifted by gains for such big tech companies. Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 1.4% to 66,532.35, with technology shares leading the decline, even as official data showed that Japan’s real wages rose for the fourth straight month. Chip equipment maker Tokyo Electron’s shares fell 7.2%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.8% to 25,047.83, while the Shanghai Composite index gained 0.4% to 4,075.31.Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.5% to 8,639.50.Taiwan’s Taiex gave up 1.5%, while India’s Sensex was up 0.2%. Read More Oil prices stabilized after falling on Thursday. Brent crude, the international standard, was up 0.4% to $95.42 per barrel. It fell to around $95.03 a barrel on Thursday, and was approximately $70 per barrel before the start of the war in late February.Benchmark U.S. crude was 0.1% higher at $93.15 a barrel.Strong corporate earnings and excitement about AI demand have helped pushing some stock markets to new heights, despite repeated jolts from the Iran war. Oil prices are still under pressure as the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway crucial for global oil and natural gas transport, remains effectively closed, and the war-caused energy shock is threatening to slow economic growth and fuel inflation in many countries. American and Iranian negotiators reached a tentative deal last week to extend their ceasefire, but the agreement has not been finalized, as meanwhile developments in Lebanon have cast doubts on prospects for a permanent end to the conflict. On Thursday, the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah rejected the latest ceasefire agreement between the Lebanese and Israel governments.“While there are few signs of progress in US-Iran talks, the oil market continues to trade on expectations of an imminent deal that would resume flows through the Strait of Hormuz,” ING commodities strategists Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey wrote in a report. Hopes regarding the U.S.-Iran negotiations may have been “overly optimistic,” they said.In other dealings early Friday, the U.S. dollar fell to 159.97 Japanese yen from 160.03 yen. Actors’ union approves 4-year contract with studios and streamers
The SAG-AFTRA building is pictured following a press conference announcing a strike by The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists on July, 13, 2023, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello, File)2026-06-05T05:56:18Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — Television and movie actors on Thursday voted overwhelmingly to ratify a four-year contract with studios and streaming services, a month after their union leaders negotiated a deal they say provides protections against synthetic actors created by artificial intelligence. The ratification was widely expected and a walkout never seemed to be in the cards during drama-free negotiations, but the vote assures there will be no repeat of the 2023 actor and writer strikes that seriously shook the entertainment industry.More than 90% of votes from members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists approved of the agreement, with about 19% of eligible voters casting ballots. Like the Writers Guild of America, whose members approved their own contract on April 24, the actors’ new deal is for four years instead of the usual three, providing an extra layer of labor stability in the industry. Actor Sean Astin, president of SAG-AFTRA, said in a statement that the contract “delivers meaningful gains in compensation, strengthens protections around artificial intelligence and digital identity, reinforces the long-term security of members’ benefit plans and recognizes the realities of how performers work today.” The contract says AI performers must bring “significant additional value” over a live actor or a digital capture of them if producers are to use them. Union leaders say this and other provisions will keep use of AI actors minimal. Read More The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which negotiates for a coalition of Hollywood’s major studios, streamers and production companies, congratulated the union on the ratification. “SAG-AFTRA’s leadership brought a genuine commitment to partnership, and together with the WGA agreement, these deals demonstrate what is possible when the industry works toward practical solutions,” the alliance said in a statement. AMPTP negotiators have been in contract talks with the Directors Guild of America since May 11. The negotiations are the first under new DGA president Christopher Nolan. That contract is set to expire June 30. ANDREW DALTON Dalton covers entertainment for The Associated Press, with an emphasis on crime, courts and obituaries. Tom Heaton: Man United veteran gives thoughts on club’s future
Tom Heaton: Man United veteran gives thoughts on club’s futureManchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton has secured his future at the club for one more season.New dealThe 40-year-old keeper is Manchester United’s number three goalkeeper but plays an integral role as part of the club’s leadership group.Heaton started his career in the Manchester United academy before playing first-team football for Cardiff City, Bristol City, Burnley and Aston Villa. He rejoined Manchester United in 2021 and has played three senior matches for the side.It was reported yesterday that Heaton signed a new one-year deal at the club that will take him into his 41st year.DelightThe veteran keeper explained to the club’s official site why he was so happy to sign a new deal and believes the club is heading towards good times again. He explained, “I think any time spent at this football club, as a player, is incredible. So to extend for another year, I’m absolutely delighted.”Heaton added, “I think the club’s in a really good place, we’ve had some really good results this season. We’re back in the Champions League, looking forward to moving forward, so it was a very easy decision.”The keeper has played an important role in supporting the goalkeeping unit, particularly in helping Senne Lammens settle as the new number one keeper.Evolving roleHe claimed that providing his experience and knowledge of the game is “an important part, especially as a senior player. But to be brutally honest, I think a lot of that comes from competing every day.”Heaton also spoke about his desire to see the club get back to the top. He asserted, “we all know what the requirements are at this football club, and that’s winning. And I think, for me, yes, helping players is part of it, developing players is part of it, but it’s all geared towards getting this football club to be in a successful place.”Whilst the Englishman knows his main job is to get the other keepers ready for action, he insists he is still ready to be called upon if needed as a player. He claimed, “as the role has evolved, as it’s moved on, I think you start to look at winning through people maybe a little bit more. You know, can you influence players? Can you offer something here and there, support, demand a little bit more? But that is secondary to making sure you’re ready to play and you’re ready to compete.”Support for Michael CarrickMichael Carrick, who was a teammate of Heaton during the keeper’s first spell at the club, took over the first team in January.Heaton only has positive words to say about the manager and claimed, “it’s been fantastic actually. You know, the gaffer, I played with him in my first stint at the club for a few years, so I know him very well, I have the utmost respect for him. An impressive, impressive player and obviously an impressive manager. He’s been fantastic to play for.”He claimed the results have backed up the manager’s credentials and said that the club is “a fantastic place to be at the minute” after Carrick and his staff had their contracts extended.Tom Heaton career statsFeature image Orlando Ramirez via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. The Hoddle of Coffee: Tottenham Hotspur News and Links for Friday, June 5
BRIGHTON, ENGLAND - MAY 16: Toko Koga of Tottenham Hotspur celebrates after scoring the teams second goal of the game during the Barclays Women's Super League match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur at Amex Stadium on May 16, 2026 in Brighton, England. (Photo by Charlie Crowhurst - WSL/WSL Football via Getty Images) | WSL Football via Getty Images There were times in 2020 and 2021, when Covid-19 sank into the darkness, that I would visit a park in Connecticut, stare across the pond and out into the sky, look beyond the darkness and ask what lay beyond it. Beyond the darkness there was one voice I heard: Bruce Springsteen’s.For months I prayed this terrible pandemic would end. I prayed for a sunny day, for the clouds to pass and for the sun to shine through my world. As I dreamt the moments where I crept towards the light on the edge of town, I heard Springsteen’s voice on the other side of it.And I resolved, dammit, I resolved to see The Boss when the Darkness gave.It was only four years before then where my father’s copy of Born In the USA became. I would spin it in my flat on Mazenod Avenue, a stone’s throw away from Kilburn High Road and an eternity away from where I wanted to be. I felt so lonely but, as the needle touched the vinyl, the sounds of Springsteen’s America perforated through my tiny flat. I felt less alone. I felt like dancing.Fitzie’s track of the day, part one: Dancing In the Dark, by Bruce SpringsteenBruce Springsteen sings for the kids born on the wrong side of the tracks, for the youths whose draft cards were pulled during the Vietnam War, and for all those running down a last-gasp chance at the American Dream – whatever that Dream might be.And wherever it might be.I would sit in my flat, all by myself in London, and dream of a better life. And I would sit on that park bench in Connecticut for this Darkness Got To Give. I dreamt of Springsteen.Six years later – and after a 70-minute queue to get into the stadium – the Darkness gave.I missed the first handful of songs of Springsteen’s concert in Washington DC. I entered the Promised Land as The Boss played on the harmonica in the aforementioned song. And then, as Hungry Heart played across the rain-soaked ballpark, the clouds that darkened the skies of Connecticut all those years ago broke wide open. The sun shone through, the rain filled the air.Because, to me, listening to Springsteen is like listening to the triumphs of a journey and the journey’s destination to come. To listen to him is to listen to sunlight. And, as the rain fell down in Navy Yard, I felt my eyes well up.Fitzie’s track of the day, part two: Hungry Heart, by Bruce SpringsteenPerhaps this was the accumulation of years, so many years, of one of the kids to whom Springsteen sings to.That, no matter what, there’ll be Better Days. The Glory Days may come and go, but Springsteen’s music is inherently optimistic and joyful. And what better, more powerful song to break through the darkness than the fist-pumping Badlands?Listen to the song, rev up your motorcycle, drive up the I-95 and into the sunset. Break through into the darkness. Break into the night and god dammit, crank up the Springsteen baby.Fitzie’s track of the day, part three:Badlands, by Bruce SpringsteenAnd now for your links:Alasdair Gold: “Why Tottenham want to sign Van Hecke and Senesi and what transfers mean for Vuskovic and Romero”

Juventus eyeing Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario
Juventus eyeing Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo VicarioTottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was on the cusp of a move back to Italy, but despite talks reaching an advanced stage, Inter Milan turned elsewhere. However, the Spurs shot-stopper is still attracting interest back home, with the 29-year-old now on Juventus’ radar, per Gianluca DiMarzio. After failing to attract their initial targets, they now have eyes on the Tottenham man, but there is no confirmation of whether he is interested in the move.Tottenham were expected to move on from Vicario this summer. He had an excellent debut campaign but has struggled over the past two seasons.Antonin Kinsky has usurped Vicario’s place in the first team, forcing the Italian international to consider his future.Interestingly, Vicario is not the only Tottenham player attracting interest from the Black and Whites. They have been keeping tabs on defender Radu Dragusin, who needs to leave the club in search of consistent playing time after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.Tottenham should look to capitalise on the interest and secure permanent sales of both players.Vicario deserves credit for the standards he set during his first season in north London, but it has been downhill since then. His value is unlikely to increase, especially after two inconsistent campaigns in which he has lost his starting spot.Spurs have already shown faith in the younger goalkeeper, and the focus should now be on building around him rather than keeping an unhappy back-up on the books.A loan move (which the Italians have a penchant for) would only delay the inevitable.Tottenham need clarity in the goalkeeping department and should pursue a straightforward transfer to secure a respectable fee while interest remains strong. The funds could then be reinvested into signing a proven goalkeeper capable of genuinely challenging Kinsky for the number one shirt.

How Hendry's Saudi experience can help him stay cool in US heat
Jack Hendry is one of the more experienced players in Scotland's squad [SNS]John McGinn was slathering on sun cream. T-shirt lines aplenty were on show. And the Scotland players were making a beeline for the sprinklers. The humidity and heat hitting Inter Miami's training ground on Tuesday was not what most of these Scots were made for.The barrels of ice being bundled to the side of the pitch and cold plunge tubs waiting for them at the end of their intense session was sweet relief for Steve Clarke's squad, who were tested to the max under the Miami sun.One man who was less fazed, though, was Jack Hendry. The defender has a head start of coping with such conditions having played in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq for the past three years. "Stay hydrated," is the top tip from the 31-year-old, who reiterated this squad's desire to be the first Scotland squad to progress beyond the group stages."It's about maintaining fluids, making sure you're very concentrated because you can lose a lot of sweat in the humidity. "The game can be a little bit different because you maybe can't run about as much, getting tired very quickly and energy going from you, so it definitely impacts."'It hits you as soon as you come off the plane'They call this place the Sunshine State for a reason. It beats down with a fierce intensity, allowing little air to puncture it... until a fierce thunderstorm hits.Such sweltering conditions were exactly what Clarke wanted, though, as he stressed the importance of "acclimatising" this week to the conditions his squad will face throughout their tournament. The Scots start against Haiti (Sunday, 14 June, 02:00 BST) - live across the BBC - and also play Morocco in Boston, before returning to Miami to face Brazil on Wednesday, 24 June (23:00)."It maybe would have been a shock if we had came out to the Miami game because it hits you as soon as you come off the plane, the humidity and the heat," Hendry told BBC Scotland at the team's hotel in Fort Lauderdale."So it's good that we can come out here for this week, prepare and get used to it and I'm sure that will put us in really good stead going into the game."Water breaks will be in operation, and Hendry stressed the importance of "using them efficiently". "They're certainly going to help us from a recovery point of view, but maybe tactical. as well," he said."I'm accustomed to it in Saudi; we have these water breaks and it might disrupt the rhythm of the game a wee bit, but from the players' point of view it definitely helps."By the time the Scots return south following back-to-back games in Boston, it could be they have already done what no other Scotland side have by reaching the knockout stages of a World Cup.It's undoubtedly the aim for this talented, together squad, but they're not looking too far ahead. They're still Scottish after all."It's just trying to get as far as possible, I think," Hendry said of what success for the country looks like this summer."It's difficult to look too far ahead. The main ambition is going to be trying to get out of the group. Then we see where we can go afterwards. "We can't look too far ahead, just take it game by game and if we do that, enjoy it and play the best we can, then we should be able to achieve that."We've got to make the most of it and make sure we don't come out of this with any regrets."World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

US employers likely added 105,000 jobs in May with labor market stable despite costly Iran war
A job seeker waits to talk to a recruiter at a job fair Aug. 28, 2025, in Sunrise, Fla. (AP Photo/Marta Lavandier, File)2026-06-05T04:01:06Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The American job market has climbed out of a rut. But it’s still trudging along tepidly, frustrating young people and others out of work. The Labor Department is expected to report Friday that companies, non-profits and government agencies added 105,000 jobs last month, according to a survey of forecasters by the data firm FactSet. That would be solid by the labor market’s recent, diminished standards -- but down from 115,000 in April.Hiring has bounced back this year from a miserable 2025, showing unexpected resilience in the face of economic uncertainty and painfully high energy prices caused by the Iran war.Unemployment is expected to have remained at a low 4.3% in May, FactSet says. But despite the improvement from last year, job creation is way down from the boom that followed pandemic lockdowns.Workers, jobseekers and employers are stuck in an awkward “no-hire, no-fire’’ labor market. “Those who have jobs are clinging to them, while those without are left wanting,” Diane Swonk, chief economist at the tax and consulting firm KPMG, wrote in a commentary ahead of the jobs report. “The result is a sense of being frozen or left in a sort of labor market purgatory.’’ Many young people are finding it tough to break into a stagnant job market. And workers who have been laid off struggle to get back to work. More than a quarter of the unemployed in April had been jobless for more than six months, up from less than 20% two years ago. Seeing their prospects diminished, Americans are reluctant to leave their jobs and seek something better elsewhere. In April, the number of people who quit dropped to the lowest level since the frightening days of August 2020, when the COVID-19 was running rampant. Read More Last year, employers added 9,700 jobs a month, fewest outside a recession since 2002. This year, hiring has rebounded, averaging 76,000 new jobs a month from January through April. Big tax refunds — the product of President Donald Trump’s 2025 tax cuts — have given the economy a lift, offsetting the impact of higher energy prices since the United States and Israel attacked Iran in late February. But the refunds have mostly been pocketed, and gasoline prices remain above $4 per gallon. Healthcare companies have been propping up the job market. Over the past year, they’ve added more than 456,000 jobs; all other U.S. employers have collectively cut 205,000. Martha Gimbel and Ryan Nunn of Yale University’s Budget Lab note that strong healthcare hiring isn’t surprising as Americans age and need more prescriptions and trips to the doctor. In fact, the industry’s job growth is in line with Labor Department predictions from a decade ago. “The question is not why healthcare has kept hiring—it is why other industries have not,’' they wrote in a report published Tuesday, suggesting that one explanation might be an immigration crackdown that has reduced the supply of foreign-born workers. At least the United States doesn’t need as many new jobs as it used to. The drop in immigrants and rising Baby Boomer retirements mean that fewer people are competing for work. As a result, the so-called break-even point — the number of new jobs required to keep the unemployment rate stable — has likely dropped to near zero, from the 155,000 new jobs per month that was typical two or three years ago, according to a Federal Reserve report. Some analysts fear that artificial intelligence will wipe out entry-level jobs. But economists Gregory Daco and Lydia Boussour of the tax and consulting firm EY-Parthenon wrote in a commentary Tuesday that AI “adoption is proving more gradual and costly than many anticipated. Firms are increasingly using AI to enhance productivity and control labor costs.’' But AI, they wrote, has reduced hiring rather than “triggering broad-based layoffs.″ And a new study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York identified a different culprit for young people’s struggle to land jobs after college: the rise of remote work. Businesses, it seems, are reluctant to hire new grads for work-at-home jobs because it is harder to train and mentor them when they aren’t coming into the office.

House passes bill to aid Ukraine and impose new sanctions on Russia
The U.S. Capitol, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Allison Robbert)2026-06-04T17:34:04Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed legislation Thursday that would aid Ukraine and sanction key segments of the Russian economy, overriding objections from Republican leaders who warned the bill would undermine negotiations designed to achieve a comparable but stronger result. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., seeks to cement U.S. assistance for Ukraine by providing more than $1 billion in security and reconstruction aid. It would make another $8 billion available for Ukraine’s defense through loans. The 226-195 vote is a sign of impatience with President Donald Trump’s approach to the war and represents the House’s second major foreign policy break with Trump this week. The day before, the House, for the first time, approved a war powers resolution aimed at halting U.S. military action against Iran.Supporters were able to force action on the Ukraine bill by gathering 218 signatures on a discharge petition, a legislative tool that allows a majority of the House to effectively bypass leadership. Once rarely successful, House members have used the petition tool this Congress to pass bills on releasing the government’s files on Jeffrey Epstein and to extend health care subsidies to many of those who get health coverage through the Affordable Care Act, though the latter measure faltered in the Senate. Meeks said the question before the House was simple. Would it help Ukraine negotiate from a position of strength or help Russia outlast American resolve? Read More “We all want this war to end,” Meeks said. “The question is how. Will we abandon Ukraine and force it into a terrible deal? That is what Vladimir Putin is counting on. Or will this body live up to the commitments we’ve made since the start of this war?”The vast majority of Republicans opposed the measure. Rep. French Hill, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said he is a steadfast supporter of Ukraine. However, the Arkansas Republican said the House was confronted with a flawed, outdated measure that actually calls for less funding for Ukraine security assistance compared to what Congress had agreed to as part of this year’s defense policy. Another section could lead to a decrease in defense spending by some NATO members, he warned. Rep. Brian Mast, the chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said he believed the bill was “a cudgel to fight against President Trump.” “This bill, in my opinion, is an unserious bill that was crafted basically a year-and-a-half ago,” Mast, R-Fla., said.Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., broke with most of his Republican colleagues in voicing support for the measure.“Are we going to stand with good or are we going to stand with evil? That’s what this is about tonight,” he said.In the end, 18 Republicans, 207 Democrats and one independent voted for the bill. Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar joined with 194 Republicans in voting against it. Lawmakers want to send a messageSupporters are hopeful that the House’s passage of the Ukraine bill would put pressure on the Senate to do the same. But they also know the Senate likely won’t go along unless Trump endorses the bill. “It’s probably not going to get 60 votes in the Senate, but it’s going to hopefully force the Senate to address the issue,” said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., who signed the discharge petition and voted for the bill. “It’s going to send a great message to the soldiers of Ukraine.”He said the vote would also send a message to Putin that “we do have a pulse here, that we do care about Ukraine and that we are going to utilize our authority to help them.”As the war has dragged on, it’s gotten more difficult for supporters of Ukraine in Congress to provide additional financial support to help Ukraine defend itself. The U.S. has approved some $195 billion for the Ukraine response, according to the latest quarterly inspector general report for Operation Atlantic Resolve, with roughly a quarter of that going to replenish weapons stockpiles for the U.S. military. The last major legislation designed to bolster the Ukraine response occurred in April 2024, though modest amounts have since been included in annual appropriations bills. Republican leaders tried to stop the billRepublican leaders urged their members to oppose the legislation. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said there are good-faith negotiations between members of Congress and the White House to boost Ukraine. He described the negotiations as complicated.“I think they are going to yield positive results, but you set that back if you pass legislation that doesn’t go as far as the negotiations are going,” Scalise said. The war that followed Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor is more than four years old, with no end in sight. In recent days, both sides have sought an edge by launching long-range missile strikes.U.S.-led peace efforts have fizzled out as the sides made no progress on key differences and after the war in Iran grabbed Washington’s attention. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accepted an unconditional ceasefire demanded by Trump, but Putin refused. Action in the Senate on Ukraine has revolved around a bill that would impose sweeping tariffs and secondary sanctions on countries that purchase Russia’s oil, gas, uranium and other exports, which are crucial to financing Russia’s military. But the bill has languished.___Associated Press congressional correspondent Lisa Mascaro contributed to this report.

Pope Leo’s visiting Europe’s migration hot spots. Catholics hope he’ll ease political tensions
Migrants react as they arrive at the port in La Restinga on the Canary island of El Hierro, Spain, on, Aug. 19, 2024. (AP Photo/Maria Ximena, File)2026-06-05T04:05:45Z BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Pope Leo XIV is delving into the hotly contested issue of migration by visiting two flashpoints — Spain’s Canary Islands in the Atlantic next week, and Italy’s Lampedusa island in the Mediterranean in early July. These rocky, remote outposts of Europe have struggled with the arrival of tens of thousands of mostly African migrants through some of the world’s deadliest migration routes. Even as numbers decreased this year, especially in the Canaries, the issue continues to roil politics in these historically Catholic countries. Many Catholics and migrants hope the upcoming papal trips will refocus attention on solidarity and support — and away from divisive political debate that is splitting the right in addition to pitting it against the left. “Stuck in the middle are the migrants,” said the Most Rev. José Mazuelos, the bishop of Canarias, whose diocese includes several of the islands. “So the church says, ‘Let’s give them a face, because we’re talking about people, not numbers.’” Among them is Eslim Jallow, 27. Dreaming of a more prosperous future, Jallow and his younger brother left Gambia and landed in the Canary Islands in 2023. At first, Jallow struggled to adapt, but he quickly learned Spanish, took courses and now earns a living as a programmer and web developer in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. “Perhaps the pope will change the way in which people here look at immigrants,” Jallow said. “Immigrants should be treated with dignity and respect, not ignored.”Like most migrants arriving in the islands, he isn’t Catholic. But he feels that Leo “speaks for us, he reminds the world we are also human beings.” Read More The Catholic Church’s ministry to migrantsAdvocating for migrants globally was a priority for Pope Francis. He went to Lampedusa in 2013 on his first pastoral visit outside Rome and, three years later on the Greek island of Lesbos, he brought back with him a dozen Syrian Muslim refugees.Under Leo, the Catholic Church has continued to call for their humane treatment around the world, including decrying mass deportations in his home country, the United States.“Pope Leo is signaling how important immigration is to him by doing these two trips early in his papacy,” said Michele Pistone, a Villanova University professor who leads its new center on immigration. In the Canaries, Leo is expected at the port of Arguineguín, on the island of Gran Canaria, on June 11 to pay homage to thousands of migrants who died or disappeared en route. The next day, he will meet migrants at a camp on the island of Tenerife. The archipelago has been the epicenter of a humanitarian crisis that in 2024 saw the arrival of nearly 47,000 migrants from North and West Africa, including several thousand unaccompanied minors. Like Jallow, half of them landed in El Hierro island — nearly triple its population, said the Most Rev. Eloy Santiago, bishop of Tenerife, whose diocese includes that smaller island. Its resources were strained to a breaking point, even though most migrants only stayed a few days. “If a boat arrives, the couple of local doctors have to go out running to take care of them, and then the local residents who had their medical appointments can’t have them,” Santiago said. Catholic organizations are among those that aid migrants from the moment they step out of rickety, overcrowded boats.Arrivals have slowed dramatically this year, in part due to stricter controls along the African coast. But the most challenging task remains — how to help those who arrived as minors, were entrusted to state care, and are thrown out into the streets when they turn 18, often with no job prospects and no support.Jallow fears what will happen to his younger brother when he reaches adulthood next year. He’s been paralyzed from the neck down since he had an accident soon after arriving in the Canaries and lives in a Catholic hospital in Las Palmas. Caya Suárez, secretary general for the Catholic charity Caritas in the Canaries, has seen firsthand how migrants coming of age on the islands are the most vulnerable. “That’s a very bad moment, even though they’d been waiting for it with hope, because they see they are still stuck without alternatives,” she said. Caritas tries to help the young adults find housing and jobs, she added. It’s also relocated a few young migrants to Madrid, a small village in the largely rural region of Galicia, and elsewhere on the mainland, with the help of parishes there even as the governments of other Spanish regions have been reluctant to take on underage migrants. Spain’s migrant amnesty and continuing challengesMany residents in the Canaries feel like they’ve been abandoned to cope with an unsolvable problem — how to stretch even farther resources for migrants who thought they’d be within reach of economic prosperity and free to travel across the European Union, and instead end up on the street, struggling to send remittances home but also to leave.Compounded with the perception that national and European political institutions tend to see it as an exclusively “island problem,” the situation is generating a growing malaise even among generous islanders who have long been accustomed to migration to and from Latin America, the Canaries’ bishops said.“The pope’s word can help so that in the middle of this fatigue, people can buck up again because they see they are supported,” said Santiago, who was born and ordained a priest on the islands. At the national level, Spain’s Catholic Church also backed a new measure giving temporary residency permits to potentially more than half a million foreigners in the country illegally, many from Latin America. They often work in hospitality, agriculture and eldercare, boosting the economy, according to the socialist government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez — and to the church.“In the matter of immigration, the church’s position gets into a head-on collision with the position of the right,” said Pablo Simón, a political science professor at University Carlos III in Madrid. That has created a rift between the church and far-right parties, like Vox in Spain, which has criticized the church on immigration, despite often couching its anti-migrant rhetoric in religious terms. The Rev. Fernando Redondo, who leads the migration department of the Spanish bishops’ conference, said the church’s stance is in line with the Christian mandate to welcome the stranger. But he added it needs better understanding among the many faithful who believe migrants come to steal jobs or live off welfare.“We have a big challenge, which is raising awareness among our faithful … that from the viewpoint of faith, to welcome a migrant person is to welcome Christ himself,” Redondo said. “Then, of course, there needs to be ways, proper social and political ways, so that migration doesn’t become a total mess.”Hoping for words of reconciliation in the Canary IslandsIn the Canaries, ordinary people have been on the frontlines of that often life-endangering chaos — fishermen who hand out drinking water to migrants on ramshackle rafts, sunbathers who run into the sea to help landing migrants, the volunteers who greet them in more than a dozen languages. But they have also seen that integration can work, as in a small mountain village that was emptying out until a center for three dozen migrant children was opened, creating jobs and filling up the school — and the local church’s annual feast day procession. That’s why many look forward to Leo bringing a simple but crucial message of reconciliation that focuses on the people impacted, not on the politics.“The pope doesn’t support this slogan of ‘let’s go, open doors for the whole world here.’ Nobody supports that,” Mazuelos said. “When here comes a gentleman in a wooden boat after five days in the Atlantic, what are we supposed to do, kick him back? We’ve got to find a way to welcome him.”___Dell’Orto reported from Minneapolis.___Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. Five players who could be Perez’s secret ‘superstar’ signing – Romano
Five players who could be Perez’s secret ‘superstar’ signing – RomanoLast night, Florentino Perez dropped a bomb that has sent waves through the football community and seemingly could be enough to see him win the upcoming presidential election.Despite stating that he would announce his star signing on the night, Perez played the perfect marketing ploy by keeping the suspense. Instead, he teased the name, revealing that it was a superstar signing on the level of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane transfers, who is currently playing in the top leagues and in the UEFA Champions League. He said the official offer will go out on Tuesday, but his idea of keeping the suspense open is working wonders and has seen him win back the spotlight.Five possible playersVitinha could be Perez’s trump card. (Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images)At this point, no leaks are suggesting a particular player is the one Perez is targeting, but Fabrizio Romano has analysed the market to draw up a list of five players who could be the target.Looking at players in the €150 million bracket, the Italian journalist names the following players to be potential targets for Real Madrid: Vitinha, Joao Neves, Desire Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Jamal Musiala.Surprisingly, four out of the five players star in Luis Enrique’s back-to-back UCL winning side and it is clear that Perez highly rates the players in Paris. Musiala, meanwhile, currently stars for Bayern Munich. What is also clear from the list is that Perez is only targeting midfield and attacking targets and that he sees the biggest value addition to be a creative profile. A long summer aheadPerez has announced a blockbuster signing for Real Madrid. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)As further confirmed by the Italian journalist, the €150 million mark is just the starting bid Real Madrid will offer for the said target and that negotiations can take it further. It will, thus, likely be the most expensive signing in the club’s history if it goes through.Having already secured agreements with Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, Perez has made a statement of intent in the summer and both will likely be announced after the elections. The club’s transfer window, however, is anything but closed. The announcement of the blockbuster signing likely opens the door to a long negotiation, while the club are also eyeing further defensive recruitments, including Josko Gvardiol.

‘I feel fortunate’ – Barcelona midfield prodigy elated after making Spain debut
‘I feel fortunate’ – Barcelona midfield prodigy elated after making Spain debutAs Spain gear up for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Luis de la Fuente’s men played one of their two friendlies against Egypt this midweek.Spain were notably held to a 1-1 draw, but it was Marc Bernal, who was the key talking point of the game, after he was granted his debut in the senior team by de la Fuente.Speaking to reporters after the game, Bernal was emotional and elated at the same time, admitting that the occasion meant a lot to him. What Bernal said after debut for SpainBernal made his debut for Spain vs Egypt. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)“I’m very happy to have made my debut with the senior team. I think I improved a bit as the game went on, and I did show a little nerves in the first match. “But that’s normal. It’s a day I’ll remember for the rest of my life because I’ve been dreaming about this since I was little,” he said (h/t Mundo Deportivo). The Barcelona midfielder, who is set to stay at the club for the foreseeable future, was also humble when reflecting on the fact that he was called up ahead of others who did not make the final World Cup squad.“Others deserved it and couldn’t be here, so I feel fortunate,” he said, adding that he held no envy towards those who earned a place in the tournament. “It’s my first call-up and I’ve already been able to make my debut.”De la Fuente full of praiseDe la Fuente was impressed by Bernal’s display. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was equally effusive in his assessment of the youngster after the final whistle.“He’s a very young lad with a lot of personality and great judgment to play in such an important position for us as central midfielder. “He has so much potential that he has enormous room for improvement. How far he can go will depend on him because he looks like a very important player for the future,” the coach said.Meanwhile, Bernal also took a moment to defend his Barcelona teammate Joan Garcia after the goalkeeper’s error led to Iraq’s goal. “It was a play he’ll have to analyse, but we know the goalkeeper he is, and anyone can make a mistake,” he concluded.

If Kincaid breaks out, Bills offense could reach another level
ORCHARD PARK - When the time came to make a decision on whether to offer tight end Dalton Kincaid the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, Buffalo Bills president/general manager Brandon Beane didn’t even have to think twice.“Yes, I’m turning the fifth-year option in,” Beane said in late March at the NFL owners’ meetings, announcing his decision weeks before he exercised the maneuver. It was a show of faith in Kincaid, a player Beane picked in the first round of the 2023 draft after trading up two spots to ensure that he would get him, but also a player who has struggled to stay healthy the past two seasons, mostly due to a knee injury suffered midway through 2024.What the Bills see in Kincaid entering a key seasonWhen Beane picked Kincaid, he believed he was going to be the type of tight end the Bills have never had - someone who could get down the field and make game-altering plays the way Travis Kelce, Dallas Goedert, George Kittle and Mark Andrews did in their peak years, and younger players like Brock Bowers, Tyler Warren, Sam LaPorta and Tucker Kraft are doing now.Kincaid has flashed the potential to be included in that group, but missing nine games the past two years and being far below 100% in so many others has prevented Kincaid from joining the club. Now it’s on the 26-year-old to deliver on the promise he showed as a rookie when he set a Bills record for most catches by a tight end with 73, albeit for just 673 yards and two TDs.“It’s probably the best I’ve felt in my career at this point in the year,” Kincaid said recently following an OTA session. “Not having those thoughts of the knee - especially last year - I feel really good not even thinking about it out there.”If he truly is past his injury woes, it will be interesting to see what that looks like as Joe Brady’s offense continues to evolve with new pieces added to the mix.Where Kincaid may fit in a crowded Bills passing gameJosh Allen now has a No. 1-type wide receiver in DJ Moore, something that was lacking since Stefon Diggs left the building. One can assume that Moore is going to be a high-snap, high-target player.Khalil Shakir will remain a trusted target for Allen, and Joshua Palmer - who had his own injury issues in 2025 - is back and could still become the player the Bills envisioned when they signed him as a free agent last year. Then you have the enigma that is Keon Coleman and the potential of rookie fourth-round pick Skyler Bell, plus the other two tight ends, Dawson Knox and Jackson Hawes, who will vie for snaps as well. That’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen, so it’s fair to wonder how much of an impact can Kincaid have, and will he ever be able to live up not only to his draft status but now the fifth-year option that guarantees him $8.1 million in 2027, nearly doubling his 2026 salary.“He looks really fresh, he's moving really well,” Allen said. “He's such an integral part of our offense. We know that, I think everybody knows that. And when he's on the field, we’re a better team. So it's been great to have him back, moving at full health, and just excited to continue to progress with him as well.”What a breakout season from Kincaid would mean for the BillsBeane came armed with numbers during a sitdown interview early in the offseason when the discussion surrounding the fifth-year option began.“Our record with him (in 2025) was 9-2, and that counts the Miami game we lost that he didn’t finish,” Beane said. “Our record when he did not play was 2-3. Average points, 30.1 when he started and played, average points when he didn’t, 23, so a full touchdown more (when he played).”True, the Bills’ offense was markedly more effective when Kincaid played and that was evidenced by the fact that 27 of his 39 catches resulted in first downs, and his average yards per reception of 14.6 dwarfed 2023 (9.2) and 2024 (10.2). However, he needs to play more than 38% of the offensive snaps.“We had to manage him,” Beane said of their strategy of limiting his usage in the regular season hoping that he could play more in the postseason. To a degree that worked as he played 28 snaps in the wild-card victory over Jacksonville and 38 in the divisional round loss to Denver, his fourth- and second-highest totals of the year. The result was nine catches for 111 yards and two TDs.In his role as Brady’s right-hand man, Pete Carmichael has spent the first four months of his employment as offensive coordinator learning all he can about the players on that side of the roster. Before the offseason program began in April, it was strictly via film study; now it’s hands on in meetings and the practice field, and Kincaid has opened his eyes.“He's obviously a big part of this offense and when he's on the field we’re looking for ways to get the ball in his hands,” Carmichael said. “He obviously brings a lot of value to this team, and I think he's a guy that, when we have the opportunity, make sure that he's a big part of what we're doing. I’m excited about the player, he's moving around great out there.”No one has been more frustrated about the last two seasons than Kincaid, which is why he’s on a mission to get right, stay healthy and make a leap forward.“Setting a foundation for strength in the lower body was a big emphasis early on,” he said. “I just got a lot stronger, and then from there implemented movement and everything. It’s more just playing it by ear. Seeing how things go from now to training camp, and then into the preseason and season. But right now, I feel really good. It’s all in a good spot. Them pouring confidence into me only will make me a better player.”Sal Maiorana has covered the Buffalo Bills for more than four decades including 37 years as the full-time beat writer/columnist for the D&C. Big cash prizes await at the Canandaigua Lake derby
Here’s something about the Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby that Jon Betrus would like to clear up. You don’t have to catch lake trout to win a prize in the 45th annual derby, which will be from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6 and 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 7 on Canandaigua Lake. That said, last year’s grand prize winner was a 21.16-pound laker — big money for a big fish! But brown trout and rainbow trout are also eligible for prizes, said Betrus, who in addition to serving as a biology teacher and coach in the Naples Central School District is chair of the South Bristol Fish and Game Club's derby organizing committee. The grand-prize-winning brown and rainbow trout were nothing to sneeze at, weighing in at 11.34 pounds and 7.03 pounds, respectively. Canandaigua Lake never ceases to amaze when it comes to the fish swimming in its waters. “It’s neat what’s in there,” Betrus said. Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby prizesWhen the fishing is done the afternoon of June 7, cash prizes will be offered in all three categories of trout; $100 for first, followed by $100 and $50 for second and third. The grand prizes for the humongous fish range from $1,000 to $500 and are enough to have you call in sick to work on Monday with the fish flu.New this year is a youth division for anglers 16 and younger, also with cash prizes. Anyone who enters under the age of 16 is eligible for a drawing of a lifetime sportsman’s license, sponsored by the Ryan Rector Youth Opportunity Foundation. Should you catch and release at the Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby?Leaderboard updates will be available in real time on the Facebook page of the Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby to encourage anglers to catch and release their fish. That’s important for Betrus because Canandaigua Lake has the only self-sustaining rainbow trout fishery in the Northeast. “They naturally spawn successfully in the feeder creeks off Canandaigua Lake,” Betrus said. “The population sustains, and they don’t have to continually stock rainbow trout. It’s really cool.” Besides the anglers, who benefits from the Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby? The bulk of the proceeds will be presented to Hospeace House Comfort Care in Naples and Light Hill Comfort Care in Canandaigua. The money raised in the derby also helps the South Bristol Fish and Game Club sponsor kids who want to attend state Department of Environmental Conservation youth summer camps. In fact, the derby last year presented $7,500 each to the two comfort care homes and used $2,500 for the camperships. Over the past 44 years, the Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby has raised more than $275,000 to support local organizations. How to take part in the Canandaigua Lake Trout DerbyEach year, 250 to 300 people take part in the derby, but organizers are always looking for more. The entry fee is $30. To register, visit https://canandaiguatroutderby.org/. Those who take part also should familiarize themselves with the rules, which are also posted on the website. How's that possible?! National team actually turns up with 98 players
How's that possible?! National team actually turns up with 98 playersBefore naming his 26-man World Cup squad, Didier Deschamps once again had an embarrassment of riches. Despite the many spots available, France’s national coach still had to leave out several stars, including Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga and Randal Kolo Muani. The French currently have such a strong talent pipeline that, at least in theory, they could almost field 98 players at the upcoming World Cup. How is that possible?Alongside the 26 professionals officially representing Les Bleus, another 72 players are taking part in the finals who would also have been eligible to play for France. All of them were born in the country of the two-time world champions and now mainly represent France’s former colonies.Especially large numbers of players will be turning out in just under a week for Algeria (13), Haiti (12), DR Congo (11), and Senegal (10). Will France soon be staging its own internal World Cup? One thing is certain: the tournament will not fail because of a lack of players. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇩🇪 here.

Bills wide receiver lands on lists of NFL players facing the most pressure
Keon Coleman called it a make-or-break season.National analysts agree. The Buffalo Bills wide receiver was named one of the NFL players with the most at stake entering the 2026 season by both NFL.com and Pro Football Focus. Both sites included Coleman on lists of players facing pivotal seasons after an inconsistent start to his NFL career.“Simply put, if Coleman doesn’t at least present glimpses of the physical presence we saw at Florida State, he may swiftly run out of opportunities in Joe Brady’s rotation,” Pro Football Focus’ wrote.Coleman, the No. 33 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has 67 receptions for 960 yards and eight touchdowns through two seasons.PFF pointed to the underlying numbers as a concern, noting Coleman ranked 50th out of 54 qualifying wide receivers with at least 150 targets over the last two seasons in receiving grade. He ranked in the 0th percentile in separation rate.NFL.com also named Coleman among the league’s make-or-break players, writing that the 23-year-old needs to take “a step or two forward” entering his third season, or else he'll "face the possibility of moving elsewhere in 2027."The national attention comes after Coleman already acknowledged it's a crucial season.“For me, it’s make or break,” Coleman said during organized team activities. “If you s---, you might not be here, simple as that. I know what I’m capable of. So, if I fall anything short of that, I’m doing myself a disservice and my team.”Coleman’s first two seasons have been a mix of flashes and frustration. He recorded a 100-yard game in last year's season opener and scored a touchdown in the Bills' final playoff game, but he also struggled with consistency and was a healthy scratch multiple times last season. The Bills added competition this offseason, trading for D.J. Moore and drafting Skyler Bell in the fourth round. But Buffalo has continued to publicly back Coleman.General manager Brandon Beane said after the draft that teams contacted the Bills about a possible Coleman trade, but those conversations were quickly shut down.“We’ve hit the reset button with him,” Beane said. “I think his best year is yet to come here in 2026.”Brady has discussed finding new ways to use Coleman, including moving the 6-foot-4 receiver around the formation and potentially creating matchups from the slot.Coleman said he's aware of the criticism and it doesn't bother him."I ain't scared of s---," Coleman said. "I just what they saying. I hear it. I just don't care.'This article originally appeared on Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: Keon Coleman named one of NFL players with most at stake in 2026

Liverpool advancing on generational transfer as new talks begin
Liverpool advancing on generational transfer as new talks beginMichael Edwards is closing in on a generational midfielder. Liverpool are expected to prioritise midfield reinforcements this summer as uncertainty continues to surround several key members of the squad.Among the biggest question marks is Curtis Jones. The academy graduate is entering the final year of his contract, and with little visible progress made in negotiations over an extension, speculation regarding his long-term future has intensified. As a result, there is a growing sense that Liverpool could consider offers for Jones should a suitable opportunity arise. The situation has prompted the club to reassess its long-term plans in midfield, with maintaining depth and stability in that area becoming an increasingly important objective ahead of the transfer window.Liverpool are also aware of external interest in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, despite both players being contracted until 2028. While neither is expected to depart in the near future, their performances have naturally attracted attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs. However, the circumstances surrounding the pair differ significantly. Szoboszlai's future appears particularly encouraging, with discussions over his long-term commitment progressing positively. There is growing confidence within the club that an agreement will eventually be reached, securing the Hungarian midfielder's future at Anfield for years to come.By contrast, Alexis Mac Allister's situation appears less straightforward. Reports suggest discussions over his long-term future have slowed in recent months, creating a degree of uncertainty despite the midfielder's importance to Liverpool's plans. That uncertainty may explain why the club is already beginning to consider its options for the future. While there is little indication that Liverpool are actively looking to part ways with Mac Allister, succession planning is an inevitable part of operating at the highest level.Any move this summer would be difficult to imagine. The Argentine remains a crucial figure in the side, regularly starting when fit and playing a key role in the team's midfield structure. It would likely take an extraordinary offer for Liverpool to even contemplate a sale. However, the longer-term picture is more complex. Mac Allister's current deal runs until 2028 and, by the end of that contract, he will be approaching 30. Liverpool have historically been cautious when handing out lengthy contracts to players in that age bracket. With that in mind, the club must begin evaluating potential alternatives, particularly as this summer may represent one of the last opportunities to command a truly premium transfer fee should circumstances change in the future.Long-term, Liverpool are also making plans to bring in an exciting German who could replace the Argentine.According to Florian Plettenberg Liverpool are pushing hard to sign Kennet Eichhorn with new talks beginning over the last 48 hours to finalise his move to Anfield.Who is this exciting young midfielder? He's only 16-years-old and he's already a regular for Hertha Berlin, who are playing in the 2.Bundesliga.Eichhorn has become a key pillar there over the course of the campaign. Born in 2009, he actually became the youngest player to score in the DFB Pokal, which is the German equivalent of the FA Cup. He won't be eligible to move to Liverpool until next summer with the Reds likely having to send him out on loan until then.If Liverpool could get this over the line, it could be huge. Eichhorn is one of the best 2009-born players playing in Europe right now.Even if Liverpool have to wait a year for him to join the Reds, it's worth securing his signature now, and it is something to be excited about for Liverpool supporters.

Cardiac Canes! Hurricanes Overcome Multi-Goal Deficit in Game 2 Overtime Thriller
IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectThey call them the ‘Cardiac Canes’ for a reason…The Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights have simply been must-watch television in this Stanley Cup Final, and for Game 2, the Hurricanes claimed their first win of the series in about as dramatic a fashion as you could imagine.Carolina fell behind early, but before the Golden Knights put a number on the board, they lost top-pairing defenseman Brayden McNabb after taking Nikolaj Ehlers’ 87.3 MPH slapshot to the face. It was reported later in the game that he had left the building and gone to the hospital for the injury.Moments later, Brett Howden got the Golden Knights ahead – nabbing himself the lead for most goals scored leaguewide this postseason. In the second period, Howden scored yet again, extending Vegas’ lead two-to-zilch.It seemed as though the Hurricanes couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to generate anything, with the Golden Knights blocking shots and defending their zone proficiently.Things Got Real in the Third PeriodHowever, with just 9:40 left in the third period, Carolina finally cracked open the game as Logan Stankoven got his team on the board. It was his 10th goal of the playoffs, returning him to the second-most goals leaguewide, as well as tying him with Eric Staal for the second-most goals scored in a single postseason in franchise history.Less than two and a half minutes later, Mark Jankowski found the back of the net to even the score, notching his first official goal of the postseason after his previous two were removed in the first and second rounds.Soon after, Frederik Andersen stopped a shot, leading to the whistle being blown. However, the puck still trickled in as players continued to push and prod at Andersen. Despite being declared on the ice as no-goal, Golden Knights coach John Tortorella challenged the goalie interference call, which ultimately failed and led to a Hurricanes power play.Despite their less-than-stellar showing with the man advantage throughout the postseason, a shot from Shayne Gostisbehere found a tip-in from Jordan Staal to give them their first lead of the night with just 4:35 remaining on the clock. However, before things were said and done, Vegas pulled goaltender Carter Hart from the net and managed a crazy goal, scoring as a shot went off the leg of Mark Stone, then off the stick of one of Carolina’s own defenseman – Jaccob Slavin – and then into the net to tie the game.Overtime commenced soon after, and a tripping call to Tomas Hertl led to another Hurricanes power play. Once again, the Hurricanes converted on the opportunity, with Seth Jarvis netting the first overtime game-winning goal of his NHL postseason career – effectively evening the series.Hurricanes Game NotesThursday’s match was Frederik Andersen’s 100th playoff game in his NHL career.Going scoreless through two periods, it was the first time the Hurricanes had done so in 49 games. The Hurricanes are the first team to overcome a multi-goal deficit in the last 10 minutes of a third period in the Stanley Cup Final since the 1944 Montreal Canadiens. This has been the first Stanley Cup Final in NHL history to feature two teams winning with multi-goal comebacks in the first two games of the series.Related HeadlinesHurricanes vs. Golden Knights: Stanley Cup Final, Game 2 – Lines, Notes, Goalies, and How to WatchHurricanes Drop Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final…but It Wasn’t as Bad as You’d ThinkHurricanes vs. Golden Knights: Stanley Cup Final, Game 1 – Lines, Notes, Goalies, and How to Watch

‘We are fighters’: Iraq aim to shock rivals at 2026 World Cup
Twenty hours on a bus, a charter plane out of the Middle East, and a one-off game carrying the expectations of 48 million people: Iraq’s journey to the 2026 World Cup was not for the faint-hearted.The Lions of Mesopotamia were the final country to secure their spot at this summer’s tournament, after a gruelling qualification campaign that saw them play 21 matches over the space of more than two years. If that process wasn’t difficult enough, the team then had to undertake a mammoth journey to Mexico for their intercontinental playoff final, after the US-Israel attacks on Iran caused travel chaos in the Middle East. Many of the players made an overland trip from Iraq to Jordan before waiting 24 hours to board a delayed flight out of the region.“By the time they got to Mexico, I had to give them three days off to recover from the whole trip,” Iraq coach Graham Arnold told Al Jazeera.“It was a tough trip. But I said to them, ‘Don’t use it as an excuse’.”His players were certainly listening. Iraq shut out all of the distractions to defeat Bolivia 2-1 in Monterrey and secure World Cup qualification for the first time since 1986. The first goal scorer on that famous March night was Ali Al-Hamadi, a 24-year-old forward who has spent the season on loan at English side Luton Town.He first arrived in the United Kingdom at age one after his father was released from prison in Iraq after being jailed for protesting against Saddam Hussein. His family fled shortly after the US invasion in 2003, settling in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. Despite the distance from home, they brought a slice of Iraqi culture to the northwest of England.“We spoke the language in the household growing up, and still ate the same food, listened to the same songs. We had Iraqi TV, a separate thing to get the channels back home,” Al-Hamadi told Al Jazeera. That connection to his native country was evident as he roared in celebration after scoring from a corner to set Iraq on their way against Bolivia.“I’m super grateful to have that moment, and I’ll take that with me for the rest of my life,” Al-Hamadi said. It’s a moment that Iraqi fans have waited 40 years for. Decades of conflict, sanctions and political instability have tamed the Lions as a footballing force, with the national team largely playing their home games abroad.A rare positive moment came in 2007, when Iraq lifted the Asian Cup after beating Saudi Arabia in the final. But a place on the world’s biggest stage remained elusive, adding to the enormity of the playoff final in northern Mexico.“The weight of that shirt is immense, being a national team player for Iraq. You feel it when you’re there; you feel the pressure of people wanting you to win, to succeed,” said Al-Hamadi.He describes football as a “vehicle for happiness” for Iraqis and a way of escaping the numerous issues that have dogged their country.“Considering what’s going on in that region at the moment, it’s nice to see the joy on people’s faces after the game and after qualification,” he said.‘Mindset of shocking the world’As the final name on the World Cup wallchart, Iraq have the least amount of time to prepare for the tournament and will look to cram a lot into a training camp in Spain with friendlies lined up against La Roja and Andorra. They will then travel to the US, with the Lions of Mesopotamia stepping into an even bigger den after being drawn in a “group of death” featuring France, Norway and Senegal. It is a daunting prospect for an Iraq squad with no World Cup experience, although their Australian coach certainly knows how to handle the unique pressure of tournament football.Arnold led Australia’s Socceroos to the round of 16 at Qatar 2022, bowing out after a gutsy 2-1 loss to eventual champions Argentina. He was also assistant coach in 2006 when Australia lost at the last minute to Italy in the same stage of the tournament. This experience of competing against higher-ranked opposition will be pivotal if Iraq are to find their way out of Group I.“We’ve got to go there with a mentality of, it’s man against man, it’s human being against human being, and go out there with a great mindset of shocking the world and have that belief and confidence in yourself that you can do something,” said Arnold.Norway will test that philosophy in Iraq’s opening game, as the Lions face a team containing Erling Haaland, a football forward who has been anything but a normal human being in the last few seasons. One Iraqi player who is relishing the challenge of taking on the Scandinavian dark horses is Aimar Sher. The 23-year-old midfielder spent much of his childhood in Sweden and now plays for Norwegian side Sarpsborg 08.“If I could choose one game to start the World Cup with, it would be this one,” Sher told Al Jazeera.“It’s the dream to play against the country I live in right now, and all of my teammates always talked about this game even before our game against Bolivia,” he said.Like many Iraqis, Sher, who is named after Argentinian midfield wizard Pablo Aimar, had to forge a new life in a foreign land after arriving in Sweden at age four. His footballing talent did not go unnoticed, and he played for the Swedish national team at the youth level, before opting to represent Iraq.Despite no longer living in the country of his birth, Sher has a deep understanding of what World Cup participation means for his compatriots.“Iraq has been through pretty much everything the last 40 years since they were in the World Cup, and to be part of the team that gives them joy, gives them hope and gives them love – I’m really, really grateful for that and I’m really humbled,” he said. When Iraq take to the field in Boston in the US on June 16, it will mark the end of a monumental journey to reach the finals, but also the start of a new adventure. This troubled Middle East nation has the chance to show the world a different side of their country, away from conflict and chaos. They’re an un-fancied outfit with unenviable group stage fixtures, but as Al-Hamadi explains, Iraqis are not afraid of a battle.“It’s in our blood as people that we’re just fighters. I think at the World Cup people will definitely see that,” he said.“They’ll see a team that runs, that can make stuff happen. If there’s one team that can pull off an upset or that can come and spoil a party, it would be Iraq.”

Loyal or foolish? Why Charles Leclerc has bet big on Ferrari – despite the warning signs
For the devoted group of Formula 1 fanatics who follow the trials and tribulations of Charles Leclerc, the Monegasque’s irritable echoes over team radio at the last race in Canada were not a new occurrence. In fact, Leclerc’s frustration with his race engineer – and his Ferrari team in general – blew up to such a point that, two years ago, Leclerc swapped man-in-ear Xavi Marcos for Bryan Bozzi. Yet still, the snappy remarks continue. “Let’s stop speaking until the last lap,” came the plea from Leclerc, after Bozzi informed his driver of teammate Lewis Hamilton’s superior pace. “You tell me the last lap – and anything absolutely critical.” Received and understood, Charlie. In the end, Leclerc finished fourth, 34 seconds behind Hamilton, who recorded his best-ever finish in second. It may seem intriguing timing, then, when news of Leclerc’s Scuderia contract extension came on Wednesday morning. Fast-forward a fortnight and the malaise in Montreal is seemingly all forgotten and put to bed. While F1 teams seldom disclose contract lengths now, it is understood the 28-year-old has penned a deal until the end of 2028. Ahead of his home race – the scene of surely his most joyous triumph in 2024 – the Monegasque has reaffirmed his commitment to scarlet red. For a driver who is, undoubtedly, one of the quickest in the sport, it is a firm showing of faith in Ferrari. It will extend his time in the prancing horse hotseat to a decade and means he is set to overtake Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari record for the most grands prix completed. Despite no world championship since 2007 and years of underperformance, Ferrari have kept their star asset. And Leclerc was willing to reveal on Thursday that other suitors had shown their hand. “There were, yes,” he said of rival bids. “I’m not going to say who.” Such a shame. He continued: “They can say it if they want. For me, Ferrari was always the choice.”Leclerc’s loyalty – in the face of Scuderia strategy screw-ups and sporadic showings of competitiveness – is commendable. Quite rightly, the eight-time grand prix winner would be one of the most coveted names on the driver market. In the past, he has been linked with Mercedes (though both seats look well tied up right now with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell), McLaren (perhaps as a replacement for Oscar Piastri, should the Australian move to Red Bull) and Red Bull (if Max Verstappen calls it a day). All the big boys, then. Yet Leclerc’s devotion to the prancing horse is longstanding, dating back to signing for the team’s driver academy in 2016. From that point on, he stormed to victory in junior championships GP3 (now Formula 3) and Formula 2 before debuting in F1 with Ferrari-powered team Sauber. He was there only a year before receiving the promotion of all promotions. “Winning in red for me has got a very unique feeling,” he said. “It’s something that I’ve dedicated all these years to.” But then, the pointed statement to those back at the Maranello factory. “We didn’t manage to achieve that [winning] yet, at least in a full season.” Charles Leclerc has signed an extension with Ferrari (Getty)"It's been a good start to the season. Obviously not as good as we want because we want to target the world championship, but there's been a lot of innovation on the car."We know where we are lacking and that's more the engine side. We have a plan coming up and hopefully that will help us get back to where we want to be.”There is a clear blueprint in recent memory for Leclerc to pin his hopes on. Prior to the 2024 season, many eyebrows were raised when Lando Norris penned a contract extension with McLaren. Why, some argued, would he not keep his options open? Surely he could move to the then-dominant Red Bull if he let his deal wind down? Was Norris being too loyal? Lando Norris was rewarded for his loyalty to McLaren - will Leclerc have similar luck? (Getty)Lo and behold, Norris’s faith was rewarded. McLaren were right in the title fight in ‘24, claiming the constructors’ championship, and had the speediest car come 2025. By the finale, McLaren had given Norris the platform to conquer his ultimate racing quest: a world championship was his. In many ways, Leclerc has felt like the unluckiest driver on the grid in recent years. His only glimpse into a title fight came in 2022, when he claimed two wins in the first three races. Then, it was actually a combination of tactical mishaps and driver errors which contributed to that tilt going astray, with Max Verstappen ultimately romping to victory. In the years since, Ferrari have largely been in no man’s land. Indeed, Leclerc has not won a grand prix since Monza in September 2024. Ferrari are now over 18 months without a Formula 1 grand prix victory. It is why some onlookers in the paddock, irrespective of Leclerc’s deep-rooted commitment, may paint a different picture of Leclerc’s extension. They may even say it is a foolish move. Yet the reality is that Leclerc, recently married to long-term partner Alexandra Saint Mleux, has not tied himself down for too long on the racetrack. On the contrary, his own words infer that Ferrari’s competitiveness over the coming months – at the start of this new battery-focused era – will dictate his long-term future. And there would be no better place, at home on the streets of Monte-Carlo, to savour that unique winning feeling in red once more.

Charles Oakley exposes Adam Silver’s massive lie about Michael Jordan over James Dolan feud
Photo by Arturo Holmes/WireImageFormer New York Knicks forward Charles Oakley has accused NBA commissioner Adam Silver of twisting Michael Jordan’s role in the long-running James Dolan feud.Silver recently said both he and Jordan tried to broker peace between Oakley and Dolan, only for those efforts to fail. Oakley pushed back on that version, especially with the dispute still unresolved nearly a decade after the Madison Square Garden incident. For Oakley, the issue is not only that Silver brought Jordan’s name back into the story. He believes Silver made the 2017 meeting sound cleaner and more meaningful than it ever became.Photo by FRANCK FIFE / AFP via Getty ImagesCharles Oakley accuses Adam Silver of using Michael Jordan in James Dolan feudTMZ Sports shared Charles Oakley’s response to Adam Silver, with the former New York Knicks star claiming the commissioner was dragging Michael Jordan into the James Dolan issue unfairly.“He’s throwing Michael Jordan out of the bus from what he’s really doing. He’s trying to have a conversation like they just talked yesterday. He’s making something,” Oakley said.Oakley’s frustration is tied to timing and framing. Silver’s comments came during the Knicks’ NBA Finals run, when Oakley’s absence from Madison Square Garden has again become part of the franchise’s wider story.Jordan’s name makes the issue bigger because of his history with Oakley. The two were close from their Chicago Bulls days, which is why Oakley bristled at the idea that Jordan was being used to support Silver’s version of events.Charles Oakley says Adam Silver never solved James Dolan issue in 2017Oakley also pushed back on the idea that the 2017 meeting created real peace. The meeting followed his removal and arrest at Madison Square Garden, with Silver involved and Jordan reportedly joining the conversation by phone.“He is coming back out with something from 2017 when we met with that guy from New York, Michael, and himself, and he tried to act like they tried to solve a problem and he went to the public in 2017 and said we met and we came to an agreement that it’s over with,” Oakley continued.“And now, you look in the paper, he made another statement about that. You didn’t solve the problem in 2017 because it’s nine years later, it’s still going on,” he concluded. The unresolved nature of the feud gives Oakley’s criticism its force. He still has not returned to the Garden in the way many Knicks fans want, and the tension with Dolan continues to follow every major moment around the team.Silver may view the failed mediation as an effort that simply did not work. Oakley sees it differently, and his latest comments show he believes the league’s old attempt at peace is being repackaged as something it never truly was.Read more:Charles Oakley rips apart ‘coward’ Patrick Ewing, reveals ‘last straw’ in their relationship

"Lesson learned” – The real reason Max Verstappen criticised Red Bull in Canada
Motorsport photoAfter qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen raised eyebrows by publicly stating that Red Bull had not followed his set-up feedback. The four-time world champion explained that he had ultimately gone along with the team’s preferred direction, partly to show that it would not work.“I’ve pointed it out so many times already, but sometimes you just have to let them feel for themselves that it doesn’t work,” Verstappen said in Canada.Team principal Laurent Mekies later clarified that such “I told you” games are part of the team’s culture and, according to him, even necessary in order to progress.Ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen revealed that the situation has been discussed internally and that a lesson has been learned for the upcoming race weekends.“We talk about it all the time, but that's always the case. We're always trying to find the optimum or at least make progress,” Verstappen said during his Dutch media round in Monte Carlo.“I just think that the direction in Montreal wasn't progress at all. But it was analysed properly and I think it became quite clear. Hopefully it's just a lesson learned for the coming races, to make sure we head in the right direction.”According to Verstappen, publicly addressing the issue also served another purpose: keeping Red Bull and its technical team sharp.“I always try to keep everyone sharp anyway. I simply wasn't happy during that qualifying session because things weren't working well. And that's why I gave my honest opinion.” Asked whether the lesson learned is that Red Bull will follow Verstappen’s feedback more closely again during upcoming race weekends, the Dutchman clarified that this is normally already the case.“They usually listen very well to what I have to say. It was just one of those moments where I had to be very clear that this wasn't the right direction.”First win of 2026 still a long way off for Red Bull?Laurent Mekies, Red Bull Racing Team PrincipalLaurent Mekies, Red Bull Racing Team PrincipalIn Montreal, Verstappen already looked ahead to the Monaco Grand Prix by joking that he would need to “order a new back” for the race, given that the RB22 remains weak over bumps and kerbs.Verstappen now adds that little has changed over the past few weeks, meaning he is still expecting a challenging weekend in the principality and not counting on a second consecutive podium finish.Red Bull’s engine partner Ford has indicated that the first podium of the year has whetted its appetite and that it hopes to secure a victory this season, but Verstappen does not believe that is realistic at this stage given the current pecking order.“Quite a lot of things still need to happen for us to get a win. You can say it, but you have to stick to the facts. We're still too slow to win, and I think that will also be the case here.”For Monaco, Verstappen agrees with McLaren’s prediction that Ferrari heads into the weekend as the favourite.“If you look at the last few races, Ferrari has been extremely strong in the slow corners. So I think they'll be very good here. That's my feeling. Here you need to be good in the slow corners, but you also need to be good over the kerbs, over the bumps, and in terms of drivability.“Those are exactly the areas where – well, the slow corners are okay – but those other things are where we're not quite optimal at the moment. And that simply costs lap time.”Finally, Verstappen expects the new-generation cars to make little difference in Monaco. Visibility from the cockpit may be slightly better, but he still does not expect overtaking opportunities to improve.“The cars are smaller, you can see more of the tyres. But on the other hand, the drivability is a bit more difficult than last year, so I don't think it will make a huge difference,” Verstappen said when asked by Motorsport.com.“And the cars are still too big. You can't overtake in Formula 2 either. You can't overtake in Formula 3 either. You can't even overtake in a Porsche Cup car either. If you're fighting the cars around you, then you can't overtake.” Read Also: Fernando Alonso "optimistic" Aston Martin has fixed cockpit issue for Monaco GP "I think we'll see him this weekend" – Adrian Newey to return to F1 paddock in Monaco Five things to look out for at the F1 Monaco GP To read more Motorsport.com articles visit our website.

'If you remove seniors, how will juniors learn?': Shaheen Afridi defends Babar Azam and Pakistan's veteran stars originally appeared on Cricket News. This was their third consecutive ODI series triumph against the world champions, with the earlier wins sealed in 2022 at home and the next one in Australia. Pakistan bowled Australia out for 157 in 42 overs in the third and series decider fixture at the Gaddafi Stadium. Josh Inglis held the Australian innings together with a fighting 65 off 71 balls, which included eight fours and a six.Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey each contributed 19, but Australia found little else of substance as Pakistan's bowlers controlled the game from start to finish. Shaheen led the attack with three wickets for 30 runs from eight overs, and was adjudged the Player of the Match.MORE: 'They gave us a green wicket in Australia': Shaheen Afridi defends Pakistan's spin pitches after PAK vs AUS ODI series winWhat did Shaheen Afridi say defending Babar Azam? While chasing 158, Pakistan were not without their own difficulties, but Babar Azam played a composed 40-run knock that helped his side get over the line in 41.5 overs and four wickets to spare. It was not the only time that Babar delivered with the bat, as in the first ODI at Rawalpindi, he had struck a half-century under difficult conditions. “I have a request for you all. You always speak about the seniors not performing. When they do, you ask, ‘Why have you performed?’ Unhe ek haal pe chddh de (Just let them be). Everyone is trying their best. No one is going to their home,” Shaheen told reporters in the post-match press conference.MORE: Has Ellis figured out Babar? Aussie reacts after dismissing PAK star again“In the Rawalpindi ODI, Babar scored a fifty in difficult conditions. He also guided Ghazi Ghori. If you remove seniors from the side, how will you build up the juniors? When I made my debut, seniors were there, and I learned from them. Even the best player in the world will only do well in 3-4 games out of 10. No one can do well in all ten games, so just give everyone a chance."Beyond the individual debate, Shaheen was careful to credit the squad as a whole. He acknowledged that batting had been demanding throughout the series and that the bowlers had risen to the occasion consistently across all three games.“It was a team effort throughout the series. It was very difficult for the batters. We put in the effort and are happy with the win. We used the conditions to our advantage,” Shaheen said.MORE: 'Only for a job extension': Shoaib Maqsood slams Hesson over 'dusty' Lahore trackThe Cricket News Opinion: Shaheen Afridi is right to defend Babar AzamThere is a pattern in Pakistani cricket coverage where senior players are held to an almost impossible standard. They were celebrated briefly when they succeeded, then dismantled the moment they struggled. Shaheen's plea was a reasonable point about how cricket teams actually function. Babar Azam is not finished, and neither are the others being written off after a handful of quiet outings.Consistency takes time, and no team builds for the future by cutting its most experienced voices out of the room the moment results wobble. To keep up to date with all the latest cricket news and share your opinion on the biggest topics visit our Facebook, Instagram and X (Twitter) pages.

Patriots’ AJ Brown admits he leaked stories about Eagles to the media, says it was ‘okay to do’
Photo by Summer Lamont/Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesNew England Patriots wide receiver AJ Brown admitted that some of his public comments during his Philadelphia Eagles tenure were made purposely to create pressure inside the team.Brown’s time in Philadelphia ended with a trade to the Patriots, but his reflection on the Eagles added fresh context to the noise that followed him during his final season there. He did not describe the media attention as an accident.Instead, Brown framed it as a leadership tactic that he believed could push the Eagles to respond, even if he now says he would not handle it the same way again.Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty ImagesAJ Brown admits Philadelphia Eagles media pressure before New England Patriots move7PM in Brooklyn featured A.J. Brown explaining that some of his comments to the media while with the Philadelphia Eagles were made to force a response from the locker room.“It was done purposely to give us [Eagles] a push. I knew if I said something in the media, it’s going to propel us to work harder,” Brown said.He added, “If you say what you need to say to the media, which I won’t do anymore, It gives everything legs to push everyone to be better. Because pressure isn’t always a bad thing, it can be a good thing. Honestly, I felt like it was okay to do.”Brown’s admission helps explain why so many Eagles stories gained momentum during his final stretch in Philadelphia. He believed public pressure could make problems harder to ignore and force the team to deal with issues directly. The risk was obvious. Once those messages left the locker room, Brown could no longer control how they were framed, and the same tactic that was meant to motivate the Eagles also fed the perception that he was a source of tension.A.J. Brown starts New England Patriots chapter after Philadelphia Eagles exitBrown was traded to the Patriots on June 1, with Philadelphia receiving a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. The move ended a dramatic Eagles chapter and sent him to the team he supported as a kid.The trade also reunited Brown with Mike Vrabel, who coached him during the early years of his career in Tennessee. Brown described the Patriots move as a dream and said wearing the uniform at Gillette Stadium would mean everything to him.His Eagles comments still matter because they show how he viewed leadership in Philadelphia. Brown saw himself as someone willing to create discomfort if it helped the team improve, but he also admitted the approach had limits.New England now gets the talent and the lessons that came from that experience. Brown is still an elite receiver, but his first major Patriots interview made clear that he wants his next chapter to be quieter, cleaner, and focused on football.Read more:The real reason why LA Rams chose to trade for Myles Garrett over AJ Brown should worry PatriotsNew England Patriots OC compares AJ Brown to Tom Brady’s phenomenal teammateAJ Brown admits he’s not ‘as close’ with Jalen Hurts as before, answers if there’s any ‘bad blood’
