SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Eriksen's heart device kicked into action[Getty Images]Footballer Christian Eriksen is in "good spirits" and is expected to be discharged from hospital soon, after he collapsed during an international match between Denmark and Ukraine on Sunday. The 34-year-old Dane, whose heart stopped following a cardiac arrest five years ago, was able to walk off the pitch after regaining consciousness - thanks to a tiny device implanted in his chest, called an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator).Denmark's national team doctor Morten Boesen said the device - which he called a pacemaker - "responded as it should".How does an ICD work? The ICD is a small life-saving device which detects problems with the heart's rhythm and immediately tries to correct them. It's a treatment rather than a cure. There are two main types of ICD - one is fitted under the skin, usually near the armpit and acts like a mini defibrillator with wires running under the skin to the chest. The other main type is connected directly to the heart and, like a pacemaker, also sends regular electrical signals if the heart is beating too slowly. In Eriksen's case, the ICD is likely to have delivered an electrical shock after detecting a dangerously fast or abnormal rhythm, to restore the heart to its normal pattern. And it would have been quite a jolt."It feels like being thumped in the chest," says Prof Aneil Malhotra, sports cardiologist at the Institute of Sport, Manchester Metropolitan University.Resetting the heart "is like switching a computer off and on again", he explains, adding that ICDs are "highly effective devices".In 2021, mid-match at the European Championships, Eriksen had a cardiac arrest - when blood stops pumping around the body. He collapsed and lost consciousness.Surrounded by concerned and emotional teammates, he was given CPR on the pitch, before a portable machine called a defibrillator was used to reset his heart.Experts say the immediate medical attention he received saved his life. This time, the defibrillator was inside his body - implanted during an operation several days after his previous collapse. It acted as a safety net and kicked in straight away when his heart was in trouble, allowing him to recover much more quickly. "Because he had the ICD in place, he didn't have to wait," explains Prof Malhotra.Prof Michael Papadakis, cardiology expert at St George's, University of London, calls the device a "shock box". "It looks after your [heart] rhythm and, if it detects a very fast, life-threatening irregularity, it will shock you out of it and jump-start the heart," he says.[BBC]Why do heart problems like this happen?A cardiac arrest, which is different from a heart attack, can happen for a number of different reasons. These include when the electrical impulses that regulate heartbeats don't function properly, or when the walls of the heart become inflamed or damaged. In young people, the underlying cause can either be genetic or acquired in some way - after an infection or an allergic reaction to medication, for example. Very rarely, the cardiac arrest can be a one-off with the reason never properly identified.Heart problems affecting young professional athletes are unusual but not unheard of.Eriksen's first collapse came nine years after Fabrice Muamba's near-fatal injury at Tottenham and 19 years after midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe collapsed and tragically lost his life playing in Lyon.Former Bolton midfielder Muamba retired aged 24 on the advice of his doctors, but others have continued to play with an ICD - including former Manchester United midfielder Daley Blind, who returned to play for Ajax and the Netherlands after being diagnosed with a heart condition in 2019.Luton Town's Premier League match at Bournemouth was abandoned in 2023 after the club's captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch. Two years on from suffering his cardiac arrest, Lockyer returned to football with Bristol Rovers. How common are these conditions?Eriksen had a cardiac arrest in 2021 while playing in the European Championships [Reuters]Outside of professional sport, sudden cardiac arrests kill 12 people a week under the age of 35 in the UK, according to charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)."This second, sudden collapse of Eriksen is a reminder of the potentially devastating impact that cardiac conditions can have on so many young people every day in the UK and across the world," says chief executive Dr Steve Cox.He adds that in around 80% of cases, there are no signs or symptoms before collapse.Screening programmes in the UK, where healthy 14-35 year olds' hearts are tested to look for dangerous underlying issues, have found that around one in 300 could be affected. If left untreated, those conditions could become life-threatening.Prof Malhotra says that his research on young footballers suggests that one in 250 could have a heart condition that requires monitoring. And black athletes tend to have a higher incidence of cardiac death than white athletes, although it's not clear why.Dr Cox says that there is still much to learn about these conditions, although major advances have been made in preventing and managing them.Every player across England's 92 Premier and Football League clubs is now screened when they sign their first professional contract, and again at the ages of 18 and 20, using an electrocardiogram to check the heart's rhythm and electrical activity. An ultrasound can also look at the structure of the heart itself to see if there are any defects. The tragedy of the 'invisible killer' of the youngChecks reveal young women with deadly 'silent' heart riskDoes it stop you from playing sport? Not any more.Research shows that many people with ICDs can return to sport, whatever level they play at, after taking medical advice. In fact, studies suggest that around 10% receive a shock from their device after it detects an abnormal heart rhythm. This means the device is working, says Prof Rachel Lampert, sports cardiologist and an electrophysiologist at Yale School of Medicine."We used to spend a lot of time telling people what they should and shouldn't do," she says. But now, doctors talk to athletes about the risks and benefits of having an ICD, and together they decide on a way forward, she adds. The rules do vary in different countries. In Italy, footballers are strictly forbidden to play at amateur or professional level with the device fitted. Whether Eriksen continues to play professional football after this latest scare is not yet clear. Prof Lampert says Eriksen's doctors will need to work out why his heart rhythm changed during the match, and if there is anything they can do to make it less likely to happen again."Shocks can happen at any time," she says."People who aren't athletes have them [ICDs] so it doesn't mean if he stops [playing], he won't get another one."Eriksen said in 2022, when he returned to playing football at Brentford, that he knew the ICD would one day save his life."There was always the possibility this could happen," Prof Lampert says.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM49ers’ QB Mac Jones viewed as a trade chip by NFL executivesPHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JANUARY 11: Mac Jones #10 and Brock Purdy #13 of the San Francisco 49ers interact prior to the NFC Wild Card playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on January 11, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Lauren Leigh Bacho/Getty Images) | Getty Images Mac Jones was the last San Francisco 49ers player to speak at the podium before the team ended OTAs. Despite not throwing due to soreness in his shoulder, Jones said all the right things.“It’s Brock’s team.” “I’m not in the business of leaving good people.” “I also love it here.”According to NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, Jones is more likely to hit the incentives in his contract with another team, provided Brock Purdy stays healthy:The 49ers were never going to seriously entertain dealing Mac Jones this offseason, as team and league sources maintained to us throughout the winter. But there’s also nothing in his reworked contract with the 49ers that will preclude clubs from inquiring about him between now and the midseason trade deadline.Jones is a more than competent starting quarterback and is cerebral and has matured from his early stint in New England, and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is famous for altering the trajectory of quarterback careers for the better. He is a valuable commodity to the 49ers and has more than filled in admirably when starter Brock Purdy has been injured. But rival execs believe Jones could also end up being a luxury to the 49ers by the deadline. The NFC West is the toughest division in football, with Seattle primed to defend the Lombardi Trophy and the Rams building a super team in Los Angeles after trading for Hall of Fame pass rusher Myles Garrett and elite corner Trent McDuffie this offseason.Competition will be tougher than ever before, and the 49ers’ defence had the best pass rush in the NFL a year ago, and it might not be nearly good enough entering this season, either. It would take an injury to a quarterback on a playoff team or a team in the mix. Kyler Murray going down for the Minnesota Vikings is the easiest target to pinpoint. You don’t go out and sign Murray unless you’re terrified of the idea of having to play J.J. McCarthy.Patrick Mahomes going down for the season changed the AFC landscape. However, that didn’t occur until late in the season. That’d be the worst-case scenario in the hypothetical situation for the 49ers: A quarterback of a playoff team getting injured after the trade deadline. The Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals, if Joe Burrow is hurt, are two other logical landing spots. In an ESPN article last week, Dan Graziano listed Jones as a trade option ahead of the deadline:He’s in the final year of his contract and would cost an acquiring team $3.15 million in 2026.You can see why teams would be interested, but the 49ers have told anyone who has asked this offseason that they value him and aren’t trading him. In order for Jones to be moved, a contender would need a significant enough injury at the quarterback position to convince them to overpay the Niners to let him go. If something happened to, say, Justin Herbert with the Chargers or to Joe Burrow in Cincinnati, or if none of the Vikings’ options work out, those are all examples of places where Jones could conceivably step right in and help their Kyle Shanahan-inspired offenses. There’s no way to know when or whether those types of teams would have that type of need. Are the 49ers in the trade market for an edge rusher?According to La Canfora, the 49ers could use Jones as a trade chip for another pass rusher:Teams have been trading for pass rushers like never before in recent years, and the 49ers, despite some cap issues, have been identified to me by multiple general managers as a team they believe is primed to try to land one.Dealing Jones wouldn’t aid their cause from a cap standpoint, given his manageable salary (the 49ers added in some incentives that he frankly would be more likely to hit elsewhere if Purdy stays healthy). What he could provide is additional draft capital that could be used as part of a package for a pass rusher. There’s always the potential that the team dealing the pass rusher could need a QB as well, though that seems remote.“You think Kyle’s going to sit back and let his buddy (Rams coach Sean MvCay) have all the fun?” said one longtime personnel executive.“They’re going to have to get creative, too. The Rams keep raising the stakes… You have a backup QB who isn’t helping you win games, and somebody else wants him; it’s time to sell… Kyle will find another project to rehab. He always does.”The latter part is why it was confusing that the 49ers’ asking price for Jones was so high. There are dozens of Mac Jones out there. The NFL knows as much. Kyle Shanahan will find another reclamation project next offseason. As for pass rushers, Ian Rapoport poured water on any Josh Sweat rumors. It’s unlikely the Cardinals would’ve moved Sweat within the division. Maxx Crosby is another option, as is Kayvon Thibodeaux.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMPride-goers boo Democrat who tried to blame 2024 election loss on trans kids in sportsAttendees at Boston’s annual Pride parade on June 6 booed Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) as he marched down the street, likely due to prior comments the lawmaker has made about trans rights. In a video posted to social media, Moulton and his supporters can be seen marching with rainbow signs while onlookers boo and chant, “trans lives matter.” Moulton and the team appear unfazed, ignoring the criticism as they continue smiling and waving to those cheering. Related Vivian Wilson walks off red carpet after reporter says her father Elon Musk is “the best” In the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election, Democrats began fighting over the role the party’s support for trans rights played in Kamala Harris’s loss. While exit polls indicated that inflation and an unpopular incumbent president both doomed Harris’ 107-day run for president, some Democrats were convinced it was all about trans people. I have two little girls, I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat, I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.” Yes there is a video and yes it is glorious https://t.co/vnKdpSWyyf pic.twitter.com/FN86ChPtDz— Aidan Kohn-Murphy (@AidanKohnMurphy) June 6, 2026 Moulton has supported legislation to protect trans rights, including the Equality Act — a federal law that would ban anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination — and has opposed anti-trans legislation. Moulton is also a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, which supports LGBTQ+ equality and cosponsored House Democrats’ Transgender Bill of Rights, which would enshrine trans rights, including the right for trans athletes to play on sports teams matching one’s gender identity. Moulton’s campaign manager and political committee director resigned after Moulton’s comment, but Moulton doubled down, telling CNN he “may not have used exactly the right words” but was “speaking authentically as a parent about one of many issues where Democrats are just out of touch with the majority of Americans.” “We try to cancel people rather than actually having debates about issues that Americans care about,” he said. Republicans invested about $215 million into airing anti-trans TV ads that repeated claims about Democrats wanting “boys to play girls’ sports” and supporting taxpayer-funded gender-affirming surgeries for inmates. One ad — aired repeatedly during football games to reach male voters and suburban women — showed pictures of Harris next to a drag queen, a trans woman, and a nonbinary person; and ended with the tagline, “Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you.” Democrats largely avoided engaging with this issue. The Democratic National Convention didn’t have a transgender speaker and only mentioned trans issues once during a speech by Human Rights Campaign (HRC) President Kelley Robinson. In one of her first TV interviews, Harris briefly said that the Constitution requires the government to provide medically necessary care, including gender-affirming care, to all inmates. This is not the first time Moulton has been booed for his comments. In October 2025, the crowd gave Moulton a cold reception when he took the stage to speak at a 100,000-person No Kings rally in Boston. Moulton did not acknowledge the crowd’s displeasure. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrendan Sorsby gets injunction vs. NCAA and could play for Texas Tech after gambling ineligibilityLUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Brendan Sorsby has been granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA that could clear the way for him to play for Texas Tech this fall, even after the transfer quarterback was declared ineligible for wagering on college sports. Some of the bets were made on his own team while at Indiana. The ruling Monday by Judge Ken Curry immediately prevents the NCAA from being able to block Sorsby's eligibility for what will be his final college season.Sorsby will still miss the first two games, which was a penalty that had been proposed by his attorneys.Curry's ruling came a week after a two-hour hearing in the 99th District Court in Lubbock County, where Texas Tech is located. The NCAA can appeal to a higher court in Texas, though there was no immediate word on if or when that would happen, or the possible timeline for a different ruling. Texas Tech is nearly three months from its season opener Sept. 5 at home against Abilene Christian. In a statement, the NCAA said it strongly disagrees with the court's ruling and “is deeply concerned about the damaging, far-reaching and broadly destabilizing ramifications of this outcome — which undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports.”___AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-football0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIndia vs Afghanistan: Manav Suthar stars on debut as India script biggest win in Test historyNEW DELHI: Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar announced his arrival on the Test stage in stunning fashion, weaving a web around Afghanistan's batters as India registered the biggest victory in their Test history with an innings-and-300-run win in the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Monday.Making his Test debut, the 23-year-old from Rajasthan was the standout performer, claiming 6/33 in the first innings and adding another wicket in the second to finish with match figures of 7/62. His performance not only set up India's crushing win but also strengthened his case as a potential long-term successor to Ravindra Jadeja in the Test side.Suthar shines on dream debutAfghanistan never looked comfortable against Suthar. Bowling with impressive control and consistency, the left-armer repeatedly landed the ball in the right areas and extracted turn and bounce to trouble the visitors. His figures of 6/33 made him only the 10th Indian bowler and seventh Indian spinner to claim a five-wicket haul on Test debut. He also joined an elite list of Indian bowlers to take six wickets in an innings in their maiden Test. The 23-year-old registered the best bowling figures in an innings on Test debut by an Indian in 38 years. The last Indian to better that mark in his debut Test innings was Narendra Hirwani, who produced a legendary performance against the West Indies in Chennai in 1988, claiming 8/61 and later finishing the match with 16 wickets. — BCCI (@BCCI) Suthar also joined an exclusive club of Indian bowlers to register six-wicket hauls on Test debut. Before him, only Hirwani, Ravichandran Ashwin, Dilip Doshi and Syed Abid Ali had achieved the feat in an innings during their first Test appearances. With Ravichandran Ashwin retired and Jadeja in the latter stages of his Test career, Suthar's emergence could not have come at a better time for Indian cricket.Rahul, Gill power India to 564/8 declaredIndia's dominance began with the bat after they were asked to bat first. KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill struck commanding centuries, while Sai Sudharsan, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar contributed valuable half-centuries.The hosts eventually declared on a massive 564/8, putting Afghanistan under immediate pressure.Afghanistan crumble against spinThe visitors had no answers to India's spin attack and were bowled out for 152 in their first innings, conceding a huge 412-run lead.— BCCI (@BCCI) Asked to follow on, Afghanistan fared even worse in the second innings. Washington Sundar starred with 4/36, while Kuldeep Yadav picked up 3/30 as the visitors were dismissed for 112 in just 35.5 overs.Afghanistan's batters struggled both against quality spin and their own poor shot selection, allowing India to wrap up the match midway through the third day.India's biggest-ever Test winThe innings-and-300-run triumph is India's largest victory in Test cricket history, surpassing the previous record of an innings and 272 runs against the West Indies in Rajkot in 2018.India's biggest Test wins:Innings & 300 runs vs Afghanistan, New Chandigarh (2026)Innings & 272 runs vs West Indies, Rajkot (2018)Innings & 262 runs vs Afghanistan, Bengaluru (2018)Innings & 239 runs vs Bangladesh, Mirpur (2007)Innings & 239 runs vs Sri Lanka, Nagpur (2017)The win is also among the 10 biggest victories in Test cricket history, jointly ranking as the 10th-largest innings victory overall.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexas outfielder Aiden Robbins' clutch HR puts him in elite companyFor Aiden Robbins, his first year in the burnt orange has been full of milestones. That continued on Sunday when the Longhorns beat Oregon to punch their ticket to Omaha. Texas moved closer to winning a national title, partly due to Robbins, who continued to be a home run machine. In the first inning, the Longhorns' star crushed a home run to left center to give Texas a 1-0 lead. It was the 24th home run of the season for the Pennsylvania native, which is the third most in a single season in program history. The only people ahead of Robbins are Kyle Russell, who hit 28 in 2007, and Ivan Melendez, who finished the 2022 season with 32. late-night Longhorns 📽️#HookEm | @LonghornNetworkpic.twitter.com/CHE6UrjJHR— Texas Baseball (@TexasBaseball) June 8, 2026With the Longhorns' championship run is far from over, Robbins has more time to climb up the record boards. He has been on fire at the plate during postseason play with no signs of slowing down. That has made the Longhorns' offense far from an ideal matchup against some of the best pitching staffs in the nation. After joining Texas through the transfer portal, Robbins has shattered expectations. During his only season at a Seton Hall, Robbins posted a .422 batting average in 53 games. He also drove in 38 runs while hitting six home runs. In the Forty Acres, Robbins has taken his game to a new level, tripling his home run total. in elite company 🤘#HookEm | @AidenRobbins43pic.twitter.com/ezFcqbKKDv— Texas Baseball (@TexasBaseball) June 8, 2026If the Longhorns are to continue their postseason run, they will need Robbins to stay hot at the plate. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPadres' No. 1 Prospect Ethan Salas Shockingly Isn't UntouchableSan Diego Padres prospect Ethan SalasThe San Diego Padres are a club that isn't afraid to ever make a splash ahead of the trade deadline.Padres president of baseball operations AJ Preller is one of the most aggressive decision-makers in professional sports and is always looking to make a deal. Right now, the Padres are spiraling out of control and are 2-8 over their last 10 games, but this is a club with star power. Mix that with the fact that Preller isn't afraid to make a deal, and all of a sudden, there are reasons to believe fireworks could be on the way this summer. On top of this, The Athletic's Dennis Lin noted that with other executives, Padres No. 1 prospect Ethan Salas would likely be "relatively untouchable," but no one is off the table with Preller."But, since 2015, Preller has already moved on from six managers and eight lead hitting instructors," Lin wrote. "Even if he is contemplating a potential change to the coaching staff, his hiring history does not inspire much confidence. Meanwhile, his trading track record suggests this season is far from over. At each of the past two deadlines, Preller acquired significant help while operating with a strict budget and a seemingly depleted farm system.Do you have a take to get off your chest? Do you want to engage in a growing Padres community? Comment on our content alongside staff and fans alike!"The executive might consider catcher Ethan Salas relatively untouchable — with Preller, no one is ever off the table — but he could dangle any number of lower-level prospects. And some teams have been led to believe that, this year, the Padres are willing to take on payroll."If Salas ends up being available, all of a sudden the Padres would be a club that could be in the mix for any available star ahead of the trade deadline. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEx-Brewers star Corbin Burnes suffers 'major setback' during rehabFormer Milwaukee Brewers Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes won't be back for the Arizona Diamondbacks until at least late this season after a new injury sustained as he rehabs following Tommy John surgery.Burnes won't return until September at the earliest after suffering a teres major strain behind his right shoulder, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic said.An MRI revealed the issue last week after he felt tightness while throwing live batting practice in Arizona, his first opportunity to throw BP since elbow surgery last year. Once healed, Burnes will have to restart his throwing progression from the beginning.Burnes was initially targeting a return around the all-star break. He signed a six-year, $210 million deal with Arizona before last season but made only 11 starts before suffering the elbow injury. He had a 2.66 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 64 innings.Milwaukee traded Burnes, an all-star with the Brewers three straight years from 2021 through 2023, after the 2023 season in a deal that brought back Joey Ortiz and DL Hall from Baltimore. In his one and only season with the Orioles, Burnes was again an all-star, posting a 2.92 ERA over 32 starts with 181 strikeouts in 194 innings. Burnes won the NL Cy Young in 2021 with a 2.43 ERA, the first Brewers pitcher so honored since Pete Vuckovich in 1982. That season, he struck out 234 batters in 167 innings, and he led the National League with 243 strikeouts over his 202 innings in 2022.Both Burnes with the Orioles and the Brewers were eliminated in the first round of the 2024 postseason. The Diamondbacks momentarily sit in second in the National League West with a 34-31 record, 7½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and a half-game ahead of the San Diego Padres in the standings. This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Former Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes sidelined further during rehab0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

The shirt followed a video of Pope Leo, or Papa Leon in Spanish, saying that he was a Real Madrid fan as he traveled to Spain.Over a million people took to the streets in Madrid over the weekend to see the Pope Leo XIV visit the city and hold a mass. His motorcade also went past the Santiago Bernabeu on its way towards Plaza de Cibeles, where has to hold a mass. Before he arrived though, he was asked if he preferred Real Madrid or Barcelona. “That’s easy, the Pope is for all teams, but Prevost is Real Madrd – and Atleti!” he responded. In much of Spain though, the latter comment about Atletico Madrid was omitted from reports.Real Madrid release Leon XIV jerseyImage via EFE. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNew president Mike Gansey addresses Joel Embiid, Sixers timelinesCAMDEN, N.J. -- New Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey entered the team's practice facility in Camden, NJ with his family beside him as he takes on a new challenge in his career. The former GM of the Cleveland Cavaliers will now be running his own basketball operations department as he looks to lead the Sixers to new heights. After 14 years with the Cavaliers, Gansey is now ready to take on a new and much bigger role in Philadelphia than he had with Cleveland. It comes with new challenges, including figuring out what to do with the roster around Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe, but Gansey feels like he is ready for what comes next."I don't like talking about myself, but I just feel like I can lead, you know?" said Gansey on Monday. "I can lead a group of people. There's going to be alignment throughout the building. I'm going to be very collaborative with the head coach. I mean, me and Nick (Nurse) are going to be attached to the hip. Every decision we make, Nick's gonna be involved, and obviously, up to ownership, and obviously, the group that we have and that we retained is really, really exciting, and we got really good players. Like, we got some young players, we got some vets that can really play, so I'm just excited to get this thing started."Alignment was a word tossed around a lot during Gansey's presser. He and Nurse, along with Bob Myers, will be looking to get the Sixers over the hump and have enough to go deep into the playoffs. The Sixers have not reached the Eastern Conference finals since 2001 mostly due to the fact that Embiid and George have not been able to stay on the floor and help the Sixers get to where they want to go. One has to wonder what comes next now for this group. Embiid, 32, can still play at a high level, but he is also missing a ton of time due to a variety of issues and a 3-year $193 million extension kicks in now. George, in a similar position with the games missed, has two years left on his deal at 36 years old. With the rise of Maxey, 25, and Edgecombe, 20, one has to wonder if this is a shift in timelines for Gansey and Co."I don't look at it as a timeline," Gansey said. "I just look at like we have those four and we got to maximize those four. Obviously, VJ and Tyrese are younger, but Paul and Joel can still play at a high level. We were 24 and 14 when Joel played, and obviously the playoffs coming back from Boston. Like, we gotta rely on those four, and obviously keep on the floor, and then just build around them."Mike Gansey is here #Sixerspic.twitter.com/VsuQnDWCFg— Ky Carlin (@Ky_Carlin) June 8, 2026To Gansey's point, the Sixers were able to win games when they had their guys out there. Both players were big parts of the 3-1 comeback against the Celtics in Round 1. Unfortunately, Embiid and George have missed so much time in the past. It's not feasible to really count on either guy to lead them to where they want to go in the coming season when considering Embiid hasn't played in 40 games in a season since the 2022-23 season and George has played a combined 78 games in his first two seasons in Philadelphia."I just want to get the best out of them, you know?" Gansey stated. "Obviously, I haven't had a lot of conversations with Joel and Paul yet, and Tyrese and VJ. We've connected, you know, obviously, everyone's all over the world right now. My world's spinning right now, so I just want to get to them and kind of see what they're feeling too, you know? Get coach’s input, get their input, and see if we can get this thing together, but again, I just don't look at it as two timelines. Like, there are four guys, they're under contract, and we've got to do the best to get them to their best self, because I think every night at 7:00, we've got to get them to their best."An interesting offseason is set to begin for Gansey in year 1 in Philadelphia. This article originally appeared on Sixers Wire: New president Mike Gansey addresses Joel Embiid, Sixers timelines0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘That’s ridiculous’: Knicks star Josh Hart not happy with ‘crazy’ ticket pricesJun 5, 2026; San Antonio, Texas, USA; New York Knicks guard Josh Hart (3) reacts to a call during the fourth quarter against the San Antonio Spurs during game two of the 2026 NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center. Mandatory Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn ImagesWith a 2-0 lead in the series and the next two games played in New York City’s Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks have a chance to win their first NBA Finals in over 50 years on their home court. However, some of their most loyal fans won’t be able to see it in person, and one New York Knicks star isn’t happy about that.In an interview leading up to Monday night’s Game 3 showdown with the San Antonio Spurs, Knicks guard Josh Hart expressed his displeasure at the prices of tickets, acknowledging that some of the team’s biggest fans will not be able to attend.Soaring Ticket PricesWith a 2-0 lead in the series after the two games in San Antonio, the Knicks are in position to potentially secure the championship in front of their home crowd with two wins in New York City. Unfortunately, for most fans, being there to witness history comes at a price that’s simply unattainable. As Game 3 tips off Monday night, ticket prices have soared to extraordinary levels. On the secondary market, prices have consistently been over $5,000 for the cheapest tickets to the game, and that’s actually significantly cheaper than they were before it was announced that United States President Donald Trump would be attending the game.Prices are even steeper for Wednesday’s Game 4, which could see the Knicks capture their first NBA Championship since 1973 depending on the outcome of Monday’s contest. The lowest-priced tickets for Game 4 are currently selling for more than $11,000 just to enter the building, while the majority of seats are listed for upwards of $20,000.Considering the median annual income for an individual in New York City is roughly $41,000, these ticket costs are well outside the financial reach of the average New Yorker. While NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed some frustration at the high prices that prevented average New Yorkers from attending the game, he also acknowledged that the market simply dictates the price.Josh Hart Not HappySpeaking to reporters on Sunday afternoon, Knicks guard Josh Hart expressed frustration at the high ticket prices as wish, calling them “crazy” and “ridiculous.”“I kind of wish the ticket prices weren’t as crazy as they are,” Hart said when speaking to reporters on Sunday.“I feel like a lot of people who have been waiting for this moment for a very long time unfortunately aren’t able to get into the building,” he added. “The cheapest ticket $7,000, $8,000. That’s ridiculous.”Of course, no amount of frustration from Hart will change the reality that many of the team’s most loyal fans will have to watch from outside of the arena. But it’s clear that he empathizes with them. The post ‘That’s ridiculous’: Knicks star Josh Hart not happy with ‘crazy’ ticket prices appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMPope’s historic speech to Spain’s parliament demands respect for migrants and gets 7-minute ovationPope Leo XIV delivers his speech as he meets with members of the Spanish Parliament at the Congress of Deputies, in Madrid, Monday, June 8, 2026. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)2026-06-08T09:51:25Z MADRID (AP) — Spanish lawmakers gave Pope Leo XIV a standing ovation on Monday after he called for respect for migrants’ rights and international law in a historic address to parliament that signaled a new level of acceptance of the Catholic Church in the overwhelmingly secular country. In the first-ever papal address to Spanish lawmakers, the American pope said a “moral renewal” was necessary in legislatures and public life to ensure respect for the inherent dignity of all people, including migrants, the unborn and the most vulnerable.“The moral greatness of a nation is manifested, above all, in its capacity to accompany, protect and love those lives that are most fragile,” Leo said.Speeches by popes to foreign legislatures are rare, since they can imply recognition of a religious leader by lawmakers. Pope Francis addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress in 2015, and Pope Benedict XVI addressed his native German Bundestag in 2011. That Leo was invited to speak to Las Cortes Generales showed a level of acceptance for the Catholic Church in a political setting that might have been unthinkable even a few years ago. The Catholic Church was a pillar of Gen. Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, enjoying broad control and influence over Spanish society, but that waned after democracy took root in the 1970s. While many Spaniards still identify as Catholic, religious observance has dropped sharply amid secularizing trends seen in other once-staunchly Christian countries. Pope calls for peace as Israel and Iran trade strikesLeo’s speech came Monday as Israel and Iran traded fire, threatening to drag the Middle East back into a full-scale regional war. The pope repeated his demand for dialogue, “diplomatic courage” and the “the obligation of states to resolve their disputes through the peaceful means offered by international law.” He also lamented that European defense budgets were being built up as countries confront the threat posed by Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the Trump administration’s threats to reduce financial and military support for the continent.“It is therefore a cause for concern that, in various parts of the world — and in Europe as well — rearmament is once again being presented as an almost inevitable response to the fragility of the international situation,” Leo said.He repeated his demand for “rigorous ethical oversight” of automated weapons systems created by artificial intelligence “so that decisions regarding life and death are never left to automated systems nor removed from the moral responsibility of the human person.” Pope Leo XIV is welcomed by the President of the Spanish Parliament Francina Armengol upon his arrival at the Spanish parliament in Madrid, Spain, Monday, June 8, 2026. Pope Francis made the plight of refugees reaching Europe a hallmark of his papacy, and Leo has insisted especially on the dignity of migrants in his native United States amid the Trump administration’s crackdown.“This gives rise to a twofold demand for social justice: to offer safe and legal pathways, a respectful welcome and real opportunities for integration; and, at the same time, to promote the right to remain in one’s own land, working to ensure that no one has to leave their home due to a lack of peace, security or decent living conditions, including economic inequalities and the effects of the climate crisis,” Leo said. Leo references the Spanish conquest and the slave tradeLeo cited the 16th century Spanish intellectual tradition, known as the School of Salamanca, that gave rise to concepts of international law and inherent human rights after Spain’s colonial conquests of the Americas. He praised the theologians involved in the movement who “understood that reason could not be invoked to legitimize whatever force or self-interest that seemed convenient” and that there were “moral limits of power.”“It must be acknowledged that society and the church herself did not always live up to these insights found in their own Christian tradition,” Leo said. It was a reference to the Catholic Church’s own role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade and colonial conquest, and recalled Leo’s recent apology for the role the Holy See played in legitimizing slavery. WWW.404MEDIA.COMicrosoft Hacked to Deliver Malware to Claude and Gemini UsersMicrosoft has shut down a wave of its own repositories on GitHub, including those related to Azure and AI coding agents, as it investigates a data breach, according to research from cybersecurity researchers and a statement given to 404 Media by Microsoft. Hackers planted malware that would harvest peoples’ credentials when they opened it in AI coding tools like Claude Code or Gemini CLI, according to one set of researchers. The exact contours of the breach are unclear, but researchers say Microsoft has disabled more than 70 of its own repositories, and pointed to a particular package that was previously compromised.“We have temporarily removed some repositories as we investigate potential malicious content,” Microsoft told 404 Media in an emailed statement on Monday. At the time of writing, various GitHub repositories reads:“This repository has been disabled. Access to this repository has been disabled by GitHub Staff due to a violation of GitHub's terms of service. If you are the owner of the repository, you may reach out to GitHub Support for more information.” Last week, cybersecurity website OpenSourceMalware.com, which acts as a clearing house for indicators of supply chain attacks so defenders can secure their own networks, and which also publishes its own write-ups, wrote about the mass disabling of Microsoft GitHub repositories.“GitHub disabled 73 Microsoft repositories across four of its GitHub organizations—the entire Azure Functions org, the whole Durable Task family, and a row of AI sample apps—in a 105-second sweep on June 5,” the website wrote on Friday. Is it very unusual for any company, let alone Microsoft, to disable so many of its own repositories in one go. They include 49 related to Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing arm, and some concerning AI agents. The shutdown repositories also include ones related to durabletask, a Microsoft development tool. Researchers from StepSecurity wrote on Friday that the GitHub closures came after a malicious commit was pushed to the durabletask repository. That attack planted configuration files that would harvest peoples’ credentials when they opened the repository in Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Cursor, or VS Code, StepSecurity wrote. Hackers from the group TeamPCP previously compromised Microsoft’s durabletask, publishing three malicious versions of the tool in May. TeamPCP has performed a wealth of supply chain attacks in the first half of this year, impacting hundreds of organizations, WIRED reported. In practice, this means that any GitHub actions that used those repositories will no longer function. And coupled with the statement and research, indicates Microsoft did not fully protect itself and its users after the earlier compromise.“Why is this mentioned nowhere?” one commentator on a Microsoft forum thread discussing one of the repository closures writes.0 Comments 0 Shares 47 Views 0 Reviews -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMInsider Drops Discouraging Update On Celtics-Giannis Antetokounmpo RumorsInsider Drops Discouraging Update On Celtics-Giannis Antetokounmpo Rumors originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Rumors of Giannis Antetokounmpo being traded by the Milwaukee Bucks have been prevalent for almost a year, but the odds of him being moved this summer seem to be at an all-time high.As rumors grow and new reports continue to surface, it's hard actually know where Antetokounmpo prefers to be traded to, if he truly turns down an extension with the Bucks. During an appearance on CLNS Media on Sunday, NBA insider Brian Windhorst dropped an unfortunate update on Antetokounmpo's chances of joining the Celtics."I have not heard that Boston is on Giannis's list," Windhorst said. "I have not heard that Giannis is prepared to sign the extension with Boston. Just because I haven't heard doesn't mean it's not true. But until those two things are true, I don't think it's really something that's in the world of reality."He made sure to clarify that there is a chance that Antetokounmpo could want to join the Celtics, but he has not heard that from his sources yet. On paper, the Celtics seem like one of the best choices for him.The Celtics would have to move on from Jaylen Brown to accommodate Antetokounmpo's salary. However, they would be retaining Jayson Tatum. Tatum and Antetokounmpo could be one of the best duos in the league, and certainly capable of winning a championship. Meanwhile, the Miami Heat, who are seen as another contender for him, would have to gut their roster to land him since they do not have an asset like Brown to deal.More NBA: Celtics Still 'Paying Price' For Winning Title, Fans 'Should Be' Appreciative0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEDGE Kalib Spivey commits to Georgia Tech: ‘I love the program Coach Key is building’Georgia Tech continues to add talent to its defensive front, landing a commitment from Montgomery (Ala.) Russell edge rusher Kalib Spivey. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound defender chose Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets over finalists Clemson, Duke and Maryland, giving Georgia Tech another recruiting win in SEC territory.Spivey held over two dozen offers and emerged as a priority target for the Yellow Jackets after receiving an offer during the January of his sophomore year. From that point forward, Georgia Tech never let up.“They have been recruiting me nonstop,” Spivey told Rivals. “Coach Pope was constantly calling me, texting me and just telling me that I’m a priority to him. They just made me feel loved. They have brought me up there as many times as they could.”[ $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage ]That consistent message helped separate Georgia Tech from the competition.Spivey visited Atlanta four times throughout the recruiting process, giving him plenty of opportunities to evaluate the program, the staff and the direction of the Yellow Jackets under Key.Each trip reinforced the same feeling.“The environment there is very intense and you can tell the players and staff are hungry. They all want to win and bring Georgia Tech back to the national championship level.”The fit within Georgia Tech’s defensive scheme also played a major role in the decision.“I committed to Georgia Tech because I love the way they plan on using me in their defense,” he said. “Using me off the edge, inside some and even rushing from linebacker depth.“Another reason I’ve decided to commit is because they showed me nonstop love and constantly reached out to me every single day to make sure I could call Georgia Tech home.“I just love the program that Coach Key is building and I want to be a part of it,” he said.Key and Pope played big roles in the commitmentKey’s leadership style stood out throughout the process.“I really just love Coach Key’s mindset,” Spivey said. “You can tell all he wants to do is win and see his players achieve all of their dreams. He’s also very funny.”While Key set the tone, outside linebackers coach Kyle Pope played the biggest role in securing the commitment. The two developed a strong connection that extended far beyond football.“The main coach to recruit me was Coach Pope,” Spivey said. “I’ve talked to him all the time since they first offered me and it’s just very easy to talk to him about anything.”That relationship became one of the strongest in Spivey’s recruitment.“There have been times we’ll talk on the phone and never talk about football once,” he said. “He just wants to see me become great.”0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMitch Johnson gets brutally honest about Spurs' ‘undisciplined things’ after falling 2-0 to KnicksMitch Johnson gets brutally honest about Spurs' ‘undisciplined things’ after falling 2-0 to Knicks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Mitch Johnson and the San Antonio Spurs find themselves facing a critical challenge as the 2026 NBA Finals shift to Madison Square Garden. As the Spurs are tailing 2-0 in the series against the New York Knicks, they are running out of room for error. However, the atmosphere around the team remains positive as they prepare for a pivotal Game 3 on the Knicks’ home court.Speaking to reporters ahead of the matchup, Johnson expressed confidence in his team's preparation."The biggest thing is we've put in some good hard work at times and have not taken advantage of that hard work, and that's been partially, some undisciplined things on us, and partially also, [the Knicks] stepped up and made some plays,” Johnson said. The first two games of the series have proved the difference between a seasoned Knicks squad and a talented but youthful Spurs roster. San Antonio showed its potential by building double-digit leads in both contests, only to see those advantages disappear under the Knicks’ relentless defensive pressure and late-game execution. The stakes could not be higher for the Spurs, as a loss in Game 3 would put them in a 3-0 hole. It is a deficit no team in NBA history has ever overcome in a playoff series.Meanwhile, Johnson also offered insight into how he and his coaching staff approach setbacks after difficult losses."You dig into the film, you argue, you beat yourself up, you give each other feedback, figure out how to help the guys for the next game,” Johnson said. The Spurs arrived at Madison Square Garden determined to change the narrative of the series. Dressed in black and embracing the underdog mentality, San Antonio enters Game 3 with the goal of stealing a crucial road victory from the Knicks in one of basketball's most iconic arenas. If the Spurs can limit their live-ball turnovers and hit a few more free throws, they have the talent to steal Game 3 on the road.More NBA news:Hall of Famer sees one outcome that could change Jalen Brunson vs. Kyrie Irving talkNBA legend urges Victor Wembanyama to reach a new level to beat Knicks in Finals10 of 13 analysts agree on one thing about the NBA Finals — and Knicks fans won't like itVictor Wembanyama at center of chaos as one professional wrestler fires back over MVP disrespect claimThe scary Knicks vs. Spurs scenario Caitlin Clark doesn’t want in NBA Finals0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMWith its efforts to placate Trump, business is proving once again that it is a fickle LGBTQ+ allyWith so many frontal attacks on the LGBTQ+ community coming from the federal government, it’s easy to overlook the impact from the private sector. But according to a new report from Out Leadership, which describes itself as “the global LGBTQ+ network,” it finds that the red and blue state divide matters and affects the ability of businesses to thrive. According to the 2026 State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index, “the gap between inclusive and hostile states is wider than it has ever been, and it is still widening.” Indeed, the current index, the eighth that Out Leadership has released, expanded its methodology to include 12 new measures, including trans athletes’ participation access, restrictions on drag queen events, and adult access to gender-affirming care. Related Republicans are going to go all in on anti-trans attacks in the midterm campaign Not surprisingly, blue states score strongly on the index, with Massachusetts at the top. The bottom five are (starting with the worst) Arkansas, Tennessee, Idaho, South Carolina, and Florida. Anti-LGBTQ+ policy creates a hostile environment for business, the report argues. “Discrimination against LGBTQ+ people creates serious challenges for talent mobility, retention, and development—and creates brand risk,” it states. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today All of which is true – as far as it goes. Business has always been a fickle ally. For years, corporations have proclaimed their affection for the LGBTQ+ community while at the same time shoveling money at politicians who are doing everything possible to make the community’s life hell. Companies that have supported LGBTQ+ events and brag about their LGBTQ+ employee resource groups (ERGs) have funded Republicans who are responsible for many of the new metrics that were added to Out Leadership’s index. With the second Trump administration, the two sides of business have increasingly tilted toward the wrong side. When Trump and his allies complained about diversity, multiple corporations suddenly eliminated their diversity programs. Companies like Lowe’s and Walmart made a point of walking back their DEI programs, taking their cue from Trump’s attacks. That included, specifically, dropping their LGBTQ+-inclusive programs. As a sign of just how much business has kowtowed to Trump, more than half the Fortune 500 companies that had happily participated in HRC’s Corporate Equality Index suddenly opted out this year. Apparently, the good PR the companies felt that they got from talking about how well they treat their LGBTQ+ employees was outweighed by their fear of becoming a Trump target. Unsurprisingly, businesses have shown their discomfort by using the language they speak best: money. Funding for Pride events this year has been drying up because the same companies that were happy to be seen as sponsors in the past are showing that they were fair-weather friends at best. To underscore just how much business is afraid of the administration, this year’s State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index omits the usual page of logo soup thanking sponsors. Instead, there is a page left intentionally blank. “To protect our members, their work, and their people, we have made the deliberate choice to keep their names private, shielding them from scrutiny they did not invite and do not deserve,” the report leads. Apparently, the closet is okay for business. Indeed, looking at the member companies in last year’s report shows just how unreliable their support can be. In addition to Walmart, at least three law firms have caved into Trump and promised his administration hundreds of millions of dollars in “pro bono” legal help. The CEOs of Amazon (Jeff Bezos) and Blackstone (Steven Schwarzman) have cozied up to Trump, recognizing the financial benefits. Unfortunately, the reality is that a business’s first loyalty is not to equality but to the bottom line. Yes, corporations want to attract top talent, and that talent often leans liberal. But it’s pretty simple to put a wall between HR policies and the C-suite’s interests. Supporting the LGBTQ+ community is decorative, like parsley. The steak is the big money, like government contracts, or freedom from government pressure, like Trump lawsuits. This isn’t to minimize the importance of an LGBTQ+-friendly workplace. But if you’re looking for bigger change, corporations aren’t dependable supporters. The question is, once things swing back in the other direction (assuming that they do), will business follow suit? How will they explain away selling out their supposed principles? The odds are that they will just revert to their previous behavior as if nothing had ever happened. And really, who can hold them accountable? Individuals may express their opinions with boycotts or cancellations, but those aren’t likely to make much of a difference to the bottom line. If anything, the Bud Light and Target controversies show just whose opinion corporations value. The current flight of business into the arms of the Trump administration is a useful reminder of where companies’ loyalties lie. In the end, there’s only one color in the rainbow flag that matters to them: green. Ideally, that shake-up would come on the offense with the release of a veteran player making $7 million this season.Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller named Josh Bell, the $7M signing, as the player the Twins are trending towards cutting ties with this season. "The only question is: When will a top prospect be ready to replace Bell?"The Twins are surely getting close to cutting ties with Bell, as the $7 million slugger has a .637 OPS on the season and is accounting for negative 0.5 bWAR this season. The 77 OPS+ he has this season is the worst mark of his 11-year MLB career, and bad enough that the Twins should seriously consider parting with him in the near future. But, as Miller notes, the question then falls to who they could promote from the minor leagues to replace Bell in the lineup.Walker Jenkins is the most obvious one, but his .785 OPS this season at Triple-A isn't exactly the most inspiring performance so far.MORE: Yankees’ Ryan McMahon problem has a $25 million release solution Emmanuel Rodriguez, who has a .923 OPS this season at Triple-A, might've been a great option, but he's out for a while due to injury.Gabriel Gonzalez would make sense as a long-term option if they release Bell, as would Hendry Mendez, both outfielders who could get long-term MLB spots if Bell is released. The Josh Bell experiment hasn't worked out, and the Twins should be looking for ways to move on from the veteran slugger. If they DFA'd Bell, the replacement option would be an intriguing decision for Minnesota's front office.Regardless of who the Twins decide to promote to the big leagues, there should be no reservations about Bell being DFA'd this season. He's not done enough to warrant a roster spot so far.More MLB news:5 reasons to believe in Jordan Walker's breakout for CardinalsEx-MLB GM projects White Sox to sell at trade deadline despite 2026 successTarik Skubal being traded by Tigers would help him in free agencyCubs’ cost to trade for Tarik Skubal from Tigers revealed by ex-MLB GMPhillies extending Cristopher Sanchez to his $107 million deal was genius0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

Forty-four of his 54 pitches were strikes.“I think velocity was good,” Skubal told reporters. “Execution was good. I feel like I threw a ton of strikes. I was in the zone a lot today. Good day.”The 29-year-old left-hander had a non-invasive procedure on May 6 to remove a loose body from his throwing elbow. Skubal last pitched for the Tigers on April 29.Skubal is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts this season. He has struck out 45 and walked only six over 43 1/3 innings. Skubal has won the AL Cy Young Award each of the last two seasons.Skubal was asked when he might be pitching for the Tigers again.“There’s a plan in place,” Skubal said. “I need to wake up and feel better, feel good tomorrow and have a good week of work and then we’ll make that decision when we need to make it. It doesn’t really do me any good to tell you guys when I’m pitching next. I need to make sure that I bounce back from this one really well.”0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMPope meets with 6 clergy abuse survivors in Spain, hopes to improve responsePope Leo XIV meets with Spain's bishops at the Spanish Episcopal Conference, in Madrid, Monday, June 8, 2026. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)2026-06-08T13:59:52Z MADRID (AP) — Pope Leo XIV met Monday with six survivors of clergy sexual abuse in Madrid and vowed to consider their suggestions for how the Catholic Church can improve its response to the crisis, the Vatican said. The meeting, which followed in the tradition of popes meeting with abuse survivors during their foreign trips, lasted about an hour and took place at the Vatican embassy in Madrid, the Vatican said in a statement.Spain’s Catholic hierarchy has only recently begun reckoning with its legacy of abuse and cover-up after long dismissing the severity of the scandal that came to light thanks to reporting by the newpaper El País.During the meeting, the survivors told the pope their stories and recommendations for how the church should respond, the Vatican said.“The pope listened with affection and attention, assured them of his closeness — and that of the entire church community — and pledged his commitment to ensuring that the suggestions received serve as a foundation for further efforts, so that the church may truly be a safe and spiritually healthy place where wounds find comfort and healing,” said a statement from Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni. The encounter marked the first known time Leo had met with victims while on a foreign visit, but it by no means was his first time hearing first-hand from survivors. As a bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, the former Robert Prevost was in charge of listening to victims as the point of reference for the Peruvian bishops conference. In that capacity, he became intimately aware of the abusive practices in the powerful Peruvian group, Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, which Pope Francis formally suppressed last year. Read More As pope, Leo has insisted on the need to listen to victims but he has also demanded that the rights of accused priests be upheld. In his recent encyclical, he said the journey for justice for victims included “just reparation” and he included not only victims of sexual abuse but also spiritual, economic, institutional and power-based abuse, as well as abuses of conscience. Ahead of the expected meeting with Leo, several groups representing survivors that were not included said they were left in the dark about the encounter, and held a small protest outside the Vatican’s embassy in Madrid. Leo addresses abuse to bishops and parliamentBefore the meeting, Leo told Spanish bishops that they must offer reparations to survivors and that the entire church community should have an “ever more determined commitment to prevention and a culture of care.” “Faced with this scourge, the ecclesial community is called to respond with listening, truth, justice, reparation,” Leo said. “Every wounded person must be able to find sincere listening, welcome, protection and real paths to healing.”Amid public outrage over the abuse crisis, Spain launched a reparations system earlier this year for clerical abuse cases too old to be prosecuted that requires the participation of the Catholic Church and the Spanish government.Other countries and churches have set up reparations mechanisms to compensate survivors and provide therapy, but the Spanish one is unusual in that it gives the government a strong role in the process and the final say in payouts. The system, which is not legally binding, has drawn praise and some skepticism from advocacy groups and survivors. It gives people a year to apply.Leo reaffirms church’s right to confessional secrecyLeo also reaffirmed the right of the Catholic Church to maintain secrecy involving the sacrament of confession, amid efforts in Europe and elsewhere to force Catholic priests to report abuse that they learn about during the one-to-one conversations.Independent investigations into clergy abuse around the world have identified the seal of confession as a major impediment to exposing and preventing abuse, and called for it to be abolished. The investigations have documented how abusers used the confessional to solicit sex from minors and then relied on the seal of confession to keep it secret. In his speech to the Spanish parliament Monday, Leo framed the right of the church to keep priest-penitent conversations confidential as a matter of freedom of religion.“To protect it legally, as is done in a similar way in some professions, means preserving a sacred space of inner freedom, where the believer can open his or her soul to God without fear of external pressures,” he said. Former Opus Dei members say they couldn’t meet with LeoSome former members of the powerful Catholic movement Opus Dei, which was founded in Spain and remains influential here, were unable to get a meeting with Leo. They had sought to speak to him while he was in Madrid about psychological and other abuses they say they suffered in the movement.“We do not speak out of bitterness, nor do we seek any kind of revenge; rather, we speak out of a sense of responsibility and moral duty as those who have firsthand knowledge of a reality that has caused grave harm to the church and suffering to many people,” eight former members wrote to Leo on May 24 in asking for an audience.Leo’s office received their letter but was unable to arrange the meeting at such a late date, said Gareth Gore, an author who met with the pope at the Vatican in March about a book he wrote in 2024 on alleged abuses in Opus Dei that the movement strongly rejected as unfounded. In declining the meeting, Leo might want to avoid suggestions he was interfering in church and Argentine investigations into the movement. In 2024, Argentine prosecutors concluded there were grounds for launching a criminal investigation into its top South American officials on charges of human trafficking and labor exploitation against 44 women.Opus Dei in Argentina has denied the accusations. APNEWS.COMTony winners thank voice teachers and babysitters as Broadway crowns ‘Schmigadoon!’Ann Harada, from second left, Brad Oscar, Ana Gasteyer, Maulik Pancholy and the cast of "Schmigadoon!" perform during the 79th Tony Awards on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Radio City Music Hall in New York. (Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP)2026-06-08T09:02:06Z NEW YORK (AP) — The most infectiously joyous of awards shows, the Tonys often feel like a summer camp reunion — make that a theater camp reunion — except with tuxedoes and gowns replacing the shorts and tees. That was certainly the vibe on Sunday night, where the crowd delighted in familiar Broadway heroes finally winning their Tonys, and where the biggest award went to a Broadway musical that celebrates, well, Broadway musicals: “Schmigadoon!”There were reunions within the reunion, too. For example, the original cast of “The Book of Mormon,” including Josh Gad, Nikki M. James and Andrew Rannells, was on hand to perform a number marking the show’s 15th anniversary — a definite highlight of the night, especially seeing Gad move to the song “Man Up.”As for the acceptance speeches, many moms and dads and spouses and kids were thanked, of course. But one winner refreshingly thanked all the babysitters that made their career possible. Some highlights of the night: Pink sure got that party startedIn the show’s first bit, new host Pink, who has not performed on Broadway, pretended she didn’t know what she was doing, and dangled uncomfortably from a wire, trying to be Peter Pan. Then Neil Patrick Harris, who’s hosted multiple times, came out and told her she just needed to be herself: “You’re Pink! You can do anything,”Of course he was right. The consensus was that Pink killed it, starting with the opening number, where she led an enormous ensemble of some 170 Broadway performers in a version of “Lady Marmalade” that was a love letter to this season’s shows, with current casts performing onstage and lots of actors name-checked in the audience, too. As in: “Gitchie Gitchie Lesley Manville, Gitchie Gitchie Carrie Coon.”The number was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the duo behind “Dear Evan Hansen” and “The Greatest Showman”) and Mark Sonnenblick (who co-wrote “Golden” in “Kpop Demon Hunters”), and the reaction in the theater was ecstatic. Thank you for … canceling us?This was a new kind of thank-you. When “Schmigadoon!” won best musical, producer (and “Saturday Night Live” creator) Lorne Michaels spoke first, saying “Sometimes singing, dancing, jokes and a happy ending are all you need.”Then producer Christine Schwarzman spoke and thanked Apple TV for canceling the third season of the TV show it was adapted from.“Without them dropping it, we couldn’t have picked it up and ran with it. So, thanks Apple TV,” she said, to laughs. Read More A voice teacher gets a deserved thank-youThere was no award that had the audience cheering louder and longer than when Joshua Henry finally won a Tony, after four nominations during a stellar Broadway career.Henry won best actor in a musical for his career-topping turn as Coalhouse Walker Jr., a Black pianist who suffers the horrors of racism in the current revival of “Ragtime,” an adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s novel. In addition to his wife and kids, Henry thanked his first voice teacher, which got huge applause from the crowd. He also thanked Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell, legendary Broadway actors who preceded him in the 1998 run of “Ragtime.” Babysitters deserve gratitude, tooHenry’s “Ragtime” co-star, Caissie Levy, was waiting for him for a long hug backstage. Levy, who was the original Elsa in the Broadway version of “Frozen,” had just won her own first Tony, for leading actress in a musical. In her own speech, Levy thanked a lot of people, but one unusual shoutout was to her family’s babysitters: “Thank you to … every babysitter who’s made it possible for me to be both a Broadway actor and a mother.” Levy, a mother of two, plays the character called Mother. A play about history makes some of its ownThe winner for best play, “Liberation” by Bess Wohl, toggles between the present time and the ’70s, exploring the roots of second-wave feminism through a consciousness-raising group that meets in an Ohio gym.But it was a different kind of history that playwright Wohl addressed in her acceptance speech — the fact that she was the first American woman to win the category since Wendy Wasserstein won for “The Heidi Chronicles” in 1989.She told women and girls who were listening; “May you speak your truth and may the world be wise enough to listen.”“Liberation” also won the Pulitzer Prize this year. If anyone can make ‘Oedipus’ funny, it’s Cole EscolaThere is literally not one single thing that is funny about the story of Oedipus, the Sophocles classic tragedy with a shocking ending. But Cole Escola, the mastermind behind the hit comedy “Oh Mary,” found a way. Presenting along with Maya Rudolph, who is now playing Mary Todd Lincoln in Escola’s play, the writer-actor noted of Oedipus:“(It’s) a play that asks the question: Can women really have it all?”If you don’t get the reference, ask Manville. The veteran British actor won for leading actress in a play for her devastating turn as Jocasta in Robert Icke’s modern retelling of the tragedy — her Broadway debut. As she noted in her own speech, she plays Oedipus’ wife and, also, it turns out, his mother. To which someone in the audience called out: “Spoiler!” This is New York. They support the KnicksWhen actor John Leguizamo introduced a segment on the show, he couldn’t resist ending his remarks with “Knicks in four!”The crowd at Radio City Music Hall gave a huge cheer. You thought they were going to root for the other guys? The Knicks lead the San Antonio Spurs by 2-0 in the NBA Finals.Learning some moves during commercial breaksThe audience at Radio City Music Hall doesn’t just sit there in silence when the Tony telecast goes to commercials. There’s usually something happening, and this time, there were opportunities to learn some moves. During one break, the audience was instructed on how to use the paper fans that many found under their seats, meant for the number featuring “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” which reimagines the 1980s feline musical as a celebration of queer ballroom culture. And during another break, the crowd was shown how to dance to the upcoming “Time Warp” number from “The Rocky Horror Show.” JOCELYN NOVECK Noveck is an Associated Press national writer specializing in culture and gender, and a film critic. twitter mailto 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Comments 0 Shares 33 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNYC imposes stringent security as Trump becomes 1st sitting US president to attend NBA Finals gameNEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is set to be the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, bringing strict security measures that will require New York Knicks fans to navigate an extensive safety perimeter around Madison Square Garden and an expected lengthy wait to get inside the building. The security for Game 3 between the Knicks and San Antonio Spurs and the scene around the arena more closely resembled New Year's Eve in Times Square, and for fans, it might seem more akin to a trip to the airport. They were asked to get to the game two hours early and will be required to provide a ticket to get past various checkpoints along with passing through a TSA-style magnetometer.Trump’s appearance led the New York Police Department and Secret Service to establish a multi-block security perimeter around the arena, cancel a watch party outside and institute a no-bag policy for ticket-holders. Fans had gathered around the Garden to watch games during this playoff run, during which the Knicks have won 13 games in a row to reach the final for the first time since 1999 and move two victories from their first NBA title since 1973.“The NYPD in coordination with the Secret Service made the decision for Game 3, where we have a presidential visit, that we could not support watch parties right outside of the Garden," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference Monday. "We are looking forward to bringing back watch parties for Game 4. But I think New Yorkers are used to presidents coming to town, and they understand that that generally means lockdowns of areas and that’s what you’re going to see tonight at the Garden.”Trump has attended several major sporting events in his time as president, and the security measures have created major hassles for fans.Thousands of fans missed the start of last year’s U.S. Open men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner because of lengthy security lines. Even though the U.S. Tennis Association pushed back the start of the match by a half-hour, many fans still couldn’t get in because added measures meant that they had to go through screening not only when they arrived at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center but again in front of the steps into Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Trump watched from a suite.Asked his thoughts on Trump attending, Knicks center Mitchell Robinson said: “Cool, I guess. We can still get out there and play (no matter) who’s here and who’s not.”Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other dignitaries are also expected to be at the game Monday night. It was already hard enough for Knicks fans to get inside Madison Square Garden because of astronomical ticket prices. The get-in price for a ticket is higher than the average cost of monthly rent in New York, surging over $6,000. The best seats are tens of thousands of dollars. Mamdani said he bought his ticket for about $1,000 directly from Madison Square Garden. The difficulty of seeing the game in-person has prompted fans to crowd bars, streets and watch parties all over the city. The watch party near the Garden has become a major event all through the playoffs, but with Trump attending, that event will be moved a few blocks away outside the security perimeter, at Bryant Park.“We improvise,” said Knicks guard Jose Alvarado, who is a New York native. "We're New Yorkers. We’re going to find a way to watch a game, and that’s what we’re doing.”___AP Sports Writer Brian Mahoney contributed to this report.___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA0 Comments 0 Shares 32 Views 0 Reviews
