The Christian rock world is reeling after multiple investigations, social media accusations, and an admission titled My Confession on Instagram that have brought down Christian rock band singer Michael Tait.Tait, the longtime front man for iconic Christian rock band Newsboys, allegedly led a double life of drug and alcohol abuse and sexually abusing young white men, according to separate investigative reports by Christian media outlet The Roys Report (TRR) and The Guardian. Taits behavior had been Nashvilles worst-kept secret for decades when TikToker Azariah Southworth made a viral post in January claiming the singer was gay. The post reached over 250,000 views before it was removed from the platform for violent extremism. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Tait announced he was leaving Newsboys the very next day, without explanation.While this may come as a surprise given Ive been touring ever since college, Ive made for me what is a monumental and heartfelt decision that it is time to step down from Newsboys,he wrote in an Instagram poston January 16. This decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but amidst prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision.Since then, multiple men, all who said that they were in their early 20s when they met Tait, have come forward to say he abused them. Conservative news outlets described his alleged behavior as grooming, a term that means building a relationship with someone to sexually abuse or manipulate them. Two men stated that they were drinking alcohol with Tait and later woke to him fondling their genitals, according to The Roys Report. One alleged that Tait also offered him cocaine while on the Newsboys tour bus.The third toldTRRthat Tait gave him a back massage while skinny dipping and later invited him to share his king-size bed. There, Tait allegedly non-consensually massaged his anal region.Its not an exaggeration to say that for many evangelical teens who came of age in the nineties, the Newsboys were a core part of their evangelical Christian experience, Leah Payne, professor of American religious history at Portland Seminary, told TRR. Theyve really had a second life that gives voice to American conservatism.The Newsboys hit song Gods Not Dead became an anthem for the MAGA movement and has long been in rotation at Trump rallies. Tait laid hands on Trump in prayer with other evangelical leaders at the King Jesus International Ministry church in Miami in January 2020.Before the Newsboys, Tait, a Liberty University alum, was one of three bandmates in another Christian rock supergroup, DC Talk. That band earned four Grammys and a description as the Beatles of Christian music for one of Christian rocks most enduring singles, Jesus Freak.In his confession posted two days ago, Tait said he was already on a path to healing from his sin.He quoted King Davids prayer of repentance: Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
