A camera caught him tearing down a citys Pride decorations. Now hes in trouble.
D.C. police have arrested 30-year-old Michel Isaiah Webb Jr. for allegedly destroying Pride decorations next to Dupont Circle Park, a popular LGBTQ+ meeting place. He is also suspected of spray-painting an anti-LGBTQ+ message on a private residence. He now faces hate crime charges and possible fines and jail time.Police said Webb pulled down and destroyed rainbow-colored cloth ornaments from Dupont Circles light poles on June 2. Two days later, he allegedly was caught on surveillance cameras spray painting the messages F**k the LGBT+ ABC! and God is Real its unclear what ABC stands for. Police arrested him on June 8, The Washington Blade reported. Related Three kids viciously threw acid on a trans woman. Her community has rushed to support her. Three kids between ages 8 and 12 attacked her while she was on the way to a Pride celebration. Now, shell need multiple skin grafts. Webb was charged with destruction of property and defacing private property, both of which included hate crime enhancements. He has pleaded not guilty and claimed not to know anything about the alleged offenses. He is scheduled to return to court on June 24 and faces up to 180 days in jail and up to $1,000 in fines. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Despite his not guilty plea, he reportedly told investigators, Its not a violent crime, several times during the interview, a police affidavit said.Sadly, this isnt the only attack on Pride decorations to have allegedly occurred during this years Pride Month celebrations.Police in State College, Pennsylvania, recently arrested 27-year-old Markos Bejiga for allegedly lighting a churchs Pride flag on fire and trying to burn others while shouting anti-LGBTQ+ slurs at passers-by. He now faces five criminal charges, but the church whose flag he allegedly vandalized offered a surprising response.On June 6, Bejiga allegedly ignited a Progress Pride flag hanging over the entrance of the Faith United Church of Christ, which said, A just world for all. Photos of the flag show its lower left-hand side partially burned. He also reportedly damaged Pride-themed decorations in front of Chumleys gay bar and the Caf West 210 restaurant.Bejiga also allegedly climbed a light pole to try to ignite another rainbow flag, a police affidavit said. The affidavit added that police received multiple calls accusing Bejiga of shouting homophobic slurs at bystanders as well. Ina public Facebook post,the churchs Rev. Jes Kast said that the house of worship had displayed the flag just three days before the vandalism.To the arsonist who did this, Kast added, I pray for you. I pray for any who think this type of vandalism is morally ok. It isnt. I pray that whatever anger or distress you are experiencing that you receive loving support and I do pray you may understand that this action is wrong and we will not accept this as a community.
