He threatened to shoot up a Pride festival. Then the FBI & cops showed up at his home.
Legal authorities have arrested 35-year-old Marion County, Florida, resident Michael Wilcox for allegedly threatening to shoot up a local Pride festival.Wilcox made his alleged threats on a Facebook and Instagram post from Goblin Market, a local restaurant and lounge, advertising its June 14 Pride festival at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. He allegedly posted an image of bullets being loaded into a revolver with the accompanying text: Cant expect God to do all the work. Another user commented, Please make sure security is upped it looks like someone in the comments here is plotting to do something, according to WESH. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The event was scheduled to coincide with the six-year memorial weekend of the Pulse nightclub mass shooting on June 12, 2016, in which a gunman killed 49 people and wounded 53 more.Someone reported Wilcoxs posts to the FBIs National Threat Operations Center, which alerted the FBI Tampa Division Orlando Resident Agency by June 13. FBI agents worked with the Orlando Police Department to locate and arrest Wilcox, who reportedly has a history of mental health issues. Wilton Manors is a southeast Florida city with a sizeable LGBTQ+ population.Monheit allegedly walked through a metal detector at the entrance of the citys Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival, setting off a detector alarm, which he ignored,according to theSouth Florida Sun Sentinel. A separate reportin 2023 found three times as many incidents of anti-LGBTQ+ hate and extremism during Pride events that year over 2022. Nearly half of the reported incidents were perpetrated by individuals associated with extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Patriot Front.Thirty-one members of a white supremacist groupwere arrestedin June 2022 in Coeur dAlene, Idaho, with police saying that they came to riot during the towns Pride festivities. In 2023,white supremacists protested a Pride eventin Bozeman, Montana, and the confrontation turned violent. Several other Pride celebrations faced protests from extremists targeting them for supporting trans children and drag performances. There has been a 112% increase in documented attacks on LGBTQ+ people nationwide, according to a November 2024 report from theAnti-LGBTQ Extremism Reporting Tracker (ALERT)from the queer media watchdog organization GLAAD.A fringe few extremists, domestically and overseas, are irrationally threatened by the rising tide of acceptance for LGBTQ people, GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement.
