Following a family tragedy in Pakistan, Azra is launched into a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories real and imagined, from her mothers youth in 1969 Karachi to her own coming of age in rural Canada.Luckily, the film is premiering today with a limited theatrical release, but to tide you over until you can get to the theater, we have an adorable clip from the film. While the film is filled with family drama and countless nods to old Bollywood films, we also get to see Azra fall in love and become her own person. In the exclusive clip, not only do we witness Azra having a blast dancing alongside a film, but we also see her flirting and being sweet with the young woman shes dating. Its enough to have you swooning!Mizra drew inspiration for the film from her own relationship with her mother, who she describes as having an infectious smile, the high-fashion sari, the bouffant hair, the winged eyeliner, her eyes shimmering with confidence and mischief, in photos from the '60s that the director would pour over when she was growing up.My mother is conservative. I am not. As a very out, proud, queer Muslim, Ive grappled with identity, self love and belonging," Mizra explained. "But I dont anymore. I know who I am. But the journey of getting to write this screenplay and making this movie was a part of that knowing, and also a deep dive into understanding those who came before me. Because to understand the present, you have to understand the past. The Queen of My Dreams has already screened at TIFF, BFI London Film Festival, and SXSW and won 14 awards.
