SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWolves sack Edwards after seven monthsRob Edwards made more than 100 appearances for Wolves as a player [Getty Images]Wolves have sacked head coach Rob Edwards after just seven months following their relegation from the Premier League. The club had previously put on a united front and insisted they were behind the 43-year-old, appointed last November.Cesar Peixoto, who guided Gil Vicente to sixth place in Portugal's Primeira Liga during the season just completed, has been linked with the job at Molineux.Edwards' assistants Harry Watling and Paul Trollope are also leaving Molineux. In announcing Edwards' departure, Wolves said: "Following a comprehensive review at the conclusion of the season, the club has determined that a change in leadership is necessary as Wolves enters the next stage of its development."The club added they recognised the "significant challenges faced by Edwards and his staff during their tenure" and paid tribute to their 'commitment and professionalism throughout'."However, the decision was taken having "ultimately concluded that a different sporting direction would provide the strongest platform for future success."Wolves had already started planning for the Championship by signing Kieran Trippier on a free from Newcastle, with Edwards key to the deal, while Raul Jimenez returned, with his Fulham contract expiring at the end of the month. Technical director Matt Jackson said last month that the club's hierarchy was aligned in supporting Edwards as they looked to rebuild the squad. "The plan and the goal is to get promoted straight away but we understand a lot of change has to take place," Jackson said."If there isn't alignment here, we're dead in the water before we start, so that discussion has been going on for months already."Edwards left a Championship promotion race with Middlesbrough, replacing Vitor Pereira, but won just five of his 30 games in all competitions, losing 16.Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League - and the former Forest Green, Watford and Luton boss called for change at the club recently. "We're a collective and I'll take responsibility of course but it's not an effort thing, it's the fact that we're the worst team in the league. That's the bottom line," said Edwards at a Q&A hosted by BBC Radio WM last month. "I'll be careful what I say because I've got to work with the boys as well for the next couple of weeks but we're not good enough."That's the situation we came into. I knew coming here in November, I might be sitting here in front of a lot of very angry people because this place is in a mess. I wanted to come here, I wanted to try and help."Edwards was onto a no-win situation - BullAnalysis: Staff stunned - a gamble Wolves need to pay offStaff at Molineux have been stunned by the decision which also blindsided Rob Edwards and his coaching team. Technical director Matt Jackson was given the job of dismissing Edwards just weeks after saying they were united. His "if there isn't alignment here, we're dead in the water before we start" comment at the fans' Q&A last month could come back to haunt him and the club. Edwards called Wolves a mess and had been working to change the culture of the club and squad but that blueprint will now be ripped up. Midfielder Andre signed a new deal while Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez have joined on free transfers. A large part of the three committing their future to Wolves was because of Edwards. He left Middlesbrough to join Wolves in November when they were second in the Championship and five points behind leaders Coventry. He was planning another promotion assault and this time had a better squad and would have been backed financially, so why sack him now?Wolves had been planning for the Championship since January, a strategy was in place and there appeared to be clear thinking. Edwards did only win three Premier League games and there were doubts from the fans but it did at least feel the club was finally on the same page.It cost Wolves close to £4m to bring him and Watling to Molineux from Boro and it will not be cheap to pay them off. Reported replacement Cesar Peixoto, currently manager of Gil Vicente in Portugal, will also cost money. He is a client of Jorge Mendes' Gestifute agency - who have a close relationship with Wolves owners Fosun.Peixoto has never managed outside of the country and would come into one of the toughest leagues in Europe. That does not mean he cannot be a success but it is a gamble Wolves desperately need to pay off.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Really??': Lisa Sthalekar calls out claim that Nikhil Chaudhary would be Australia's first India-born cricketer in 60 years'Really??': Lisa Sthalekar calls out claim that Nikhil Chaudhary would be Australia's first India-born cricketer in 60 years originally appeared on Cricket News. Replying to the post, the former Australia all-rounder wrote:"Really?? First in 60 years 😜"Really?? First in 60 years 😜— Lisa Sthalekar (@sthalekar93) June 11, 2026Sthalekar's response soon went viral, prompting Vohra to issue a clarification. In a follow-up post, he wrote: "*first Indian born to represent Australia in men's cricket in more than 60 years."The correction acknowledged an important distinction in Australian cricket history.Sthalekar was born in Pune before being adopted by Australian parents. She went on to become one of Australia's most successful women's cricketers, representing the national side in 187 international matches and winning four World Cups during a decorated career.MORE:Australian cricket in crisis? Reigning world champions' dismal ODI form continues as they stare at a rare series loss against BangladeshNikhil Chaudhary could still make history as first Australian men's cricketer since 1964Long before Sthalekar, Gujarat-born leg-spinner Rex Sellers had already represented Australia in men's cricket. Sellers played a Test match during Australia's 1964 tour of India and remains the last India-born player to feature for the Australian men's team.If Chaudhary is selected in the playing XI during the Bangladesh T20I series, he would become Australia's first India-born men's international cricketer since Sellers' appearance more than six decades ago.The 30-year-old's journey to the verge of an Australia debut has been anything but conventional.Chaudhary has previously played domestic cricket for Punjab alongside India stars such as Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. After moving to Australia, he worked his way through grade cricket before earning opportunities with Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes. So while Chaudhary would not become Australia's first India-born international cricketer, a debut against Bangladesh would still see him achieve a milestone that Australian men's cricket has not witnessed since 1964.Why Sthalekar's correction mattersIt matters because achievements in women's cricket are often forgotten when discussing historical milestones. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Andoni Iraola wants Liverpool to sign world-class defenderReport: Andoni Iraola wants Liverpool to sign world-class defenderBastoni emerges as key Iraola target in Liverpool defensive rebuildLiverpool’s summer plans appear to be gathering pace, with Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni reportedly emerging as one of the primary targets identified by Andoni Iraola as he begins shaping a new era at Anfield.According to an exclusive report from SportsBoom, Bastoni has been earmarked as the ideal candidate to strengthen Liverpool’s defence during a period of significant change. The Italy international has established himself among Europe’s elite centre-backs over the past seven seasons at Inter Milan and is now being linked with a move to the Premier League. For Iraola, who has built his reputation on intensity, organisation and aggressive football, the attraction is obvious. Bastoni combines physical presence with technical quality and possesses the ability to initiate attacks from deep positions, qualities that would fit naturally into the Spaniard’s tactical framework.Photo: IMAGOBastoni profile suits Iraola visionOne of the defining characteristics of Iraola’s teams has been their willingness to play on the front foot. His defenders are expected not only to defend aggressively but also to contribute significantly during possession phases.Bastoni’s development at Inter Milan has made him one of the most complete defenders in European football. Comfortable carrying the ball forward, capable of breaking opposition lines with his passing and experienced in high-pressure environments, the 27-year-old appears to tick many of the boxes Liverpool are seeking. The former Atalanta academy graduate joined Inter Milan for around £27 million and has since accumulated close to 300 appearances for the club. During that period, he has helped establish Inter as one of Italy’s dominant forces while consistently competing at the highest level in Europe. His trophy collection reflects that success. Bastoni has won three Serie A titles and featured prominently in two Champions League campaigns that ended in heartbreak as runners-up.Those experiences have elevated his standing across European football and explain why any move away from San Siro would require a substantial financial commitment.Inter Milan determined to keep prized assetDespite growing speculation, Inter Milan are under no pressure to sell one of their most valuable players. The Italian giants view Bastoni as a cornerstone of their project and would be reluctant to sanction his departure without receiving a fee that reflects his status and importance.SportsBoom reports that any potential deal could exceed £70 million, a figure that highlights both Bastoni’s quality and the challenge Liverpool would face in securing his signature.Inter’s negotiating position is strengthened by the defender’s long-standing connection with the club. Having spent his entire senior career in Italy, Bastoni remains deeply respected within the Nerazzurri dressing room and among supporters. That said, the possibility of testing himself in a new environment could become an important factor if Liverpool’s interest develops further.Premier League challenge could tempt Italy internationalSources cited by SportsBoom suggest Bastoni could be intrigued by the opportunity to experience Premier League football. For many elite players, England’s top flight represents the ultimate test, combining relentless intensity with global exposure. Bastoni has already achieved considerable success in Italy, both domestically and internationally, having been part of Italy’s victorious Euro 2020 squad while earning more than 40 senior caps.A move to Liverpool would offer another opportunity to compete for major honours while testing himself in one of football’s most demanding environments. That prospect could become increasingly attractive should Iraola present a compelling vision for Liverpool’s future.Liverpool statement signing gathers attentionSpeaking after arriving at Anfield, Iraola delivered a message that reflected his approach to the challenge ahead.“For me, you’re all new signings.”He also spoke about his determination to “earn the right to belong” at Liverpool, underlining his desire to build a squad capable of challenging for the biggest prizes in the game.Securing a player of Bastoni’s calibre would certainly represent a statement of intent. Beyond his defensive qualities, the Italian would bring leadership, experience and a winning mentality to a squad entering a new chapter.Whether Liverpool can convince Inter Milan to part with one of their most influential players remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that Bastoni’s name is likely to remain prominent throughout the transfer window as Iraola looks to put his stamp on Liverpool’s future.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDalglish, Souness & Rod Stewart - Scotland's World Cup '86 rememberedMichael Laudrup and Denmark faced Scotland at the 1986 World Cup [Getty Images]On a veranda at the Scotland squad hotel, captain Graeme Souness is discussing the players he is trying to sign for Rangers. Manager Alex Ferguson is in his room mulling over interest from Arsenal and Tottenham. And thousands of miles away, Kenny Dalglish - the country's most-capped player - is sitting idle.To say the national team's Mexico 1986 campaign was infused with intrigue would be doing the dictionary a disservice. After all, this was a campaign in which the manager died in the dressing room before qualification was clinched. His replacement was the greatest the game has ever seen. Three future national team bosses were on bibs and cones duty. The player-managers of two of Britain's biggest clubs were named in the squad. As, belatedly, was a striker from European Cup finalists Barcelona. And the Scottish FA president almost sparked a diplomatic incident by labelling opponents "scum".Furthermore, in the build-up you had players drinking mudslingers with Rod Stewart, hanging out of stretch limos on Sunset Boulevard, appearing on Grandstand drunk and - apparently - heckling John McEnroe at the Australian Open.World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World CupDavid Coleman, sunstroke & cheerio KennyThe latter two incidents took place in Melbourne, scene of the qualification play-off second leg with Australia.Scotland had set up that tie on a wretched night in Cardiff, their joy stolen by the death of Jock Stein in the immediate aftermath of a 1-1 draw. That left assistant Ferguson to take charge for the play-off, leading the side to a 2-0 aggregate win after a goalless meeting down under.Goalkeeper Alan Rough remembers "a right good carry on" on the flight home after a four-day trip that included a night out at a Scottish social club, intoxicated striker David Speedie having to be carried back to the hotel for a live BBC interview with David Coleman, and the same player passing out from sunstroke after a putting competition got a little too heated.Speedie would be excluded from Ferguson's squad for the finals, but it was the absence of another name that caused controversy. Alan Hansen had won the English double with Liverpool but failed to make the final 22, with the then-Aberdeen manager preferring Pittodrie partnership Willie Miller and Alex McLeish. "I don't think Alan had been playing much," says Miller. "I don't know if conversations were had but it's a long way to go if you're not starting."Within days, Hansen's close friend and Liverpool player-manager Kenny Dalglish - 35 and preparing for a fourth finals - withdrew with a knee problem. Some said the two events were not unrelated.'I'll never forget wee Charlie hanging out of that limo'Dalglish's place would be taken by Barcelona's Steve Archibald as the squad travelled to Santa Fe in New Mexico for an altitude training camp. Those involved speak fondly of those two weeks, which started with an irate Ferguson demanding the Scottish FA suits vacate their first-class seats on the plane for the players, and ended with an eventful two-day stay in Los Angeles.Winger Eamonn Bannon recalls scoring twice in a friendly against "Mickey Mouse local team" LA Heat before a reunion with his brother. Others tell conflicting tales about meeting with Rod Stewart...Miller believes his invitation got lost in the post; coach Craig Brown said Ferguson gave the players the night off on the condition they didn't go to a party at the singer's house; Bannon reckons a select group were permitted to show face and were a little worse for wear the next day. But Rough has a more vivid recollection."It was fantastic," he says. "We never made Rod's house, though. We met him at some restaurant and he started making us mudslingers. Within an hour, we were all half cut and he disappeared. "Then a stretch limo turned up to take us home. There was a phone in it and I'll never forget wee Charlie Nicholas hanging out of the sunroof calling his maw in Maryhill while we were driving down Sunset Boulevard."Rod Stewart wearing a Scotland shirt while performing with The Faces at Wembley in 1986 [Getty Images]Tiny caves & Berti going undercoverAfter all that, Scotland were the last team to arrive in Mexico and took up residence in the middle of an Aztec heritage site.Miller describes it as "a wee bit more spartan" than the squad had grown accustomed to, while Bannon remembers a hairy police escort from the airport and "individual rooms that were like little caves with a tiny window".But the focus was on the opening game with Denmark. They might have been among the best in Europe but the Danes were also adept at the other side of the game, successfully hobbling Nicholas, whose selection with Paul Sturrock caused Archibald to storm out of a team meeting in a huff.As it was, the Scots were left to rue their profligacy as Preben Elkjaer Larsen's goal gave the Danes victory. "I always thought the first game was the one," says Rough. "You have to take something, especially with West Germany next."After impressing from the bench, Bannon started against Franz Beckenbauer's side in a game best remembered for Gordon Strachan's attempt to hurdle the hoarding after giving Scotland an early lead. The eventual finalists would ultimately recover to win 2-1 in a game played in the stifling midday sun. Miller describes it as "like playing on a different planet"; Bannon remembers being unable to muster the energy to join the celebrations for Strachan's 18th-minute goal; while third-choice goalkeeper Rough "had the Ambre Solaire on" in the stands.Archibald had been restored to the XI, with Strachan playing off him. The ploy was designed to deceive the Germans, but it later emerged they had managed to watch a Scotland closed training session."Wee Berti Vogts told us he tried to get in but was turned away," the late Brown previously said of the then Germany assistant and future Scotland boss. "But then he saw a guy going into the stadium to set up a Coca-Cola stall, so he took a shot of his uniform and barrow and rolled it in so he could watch."'Souness said he was trying to sign Woods & Butcher'Two defeats in two games left Scotland needing to beat Uruguay to advance to the last 16 and Ferguson with a decision to make.Captain Souness, by then 33, had struggled with the heat and the altitude and, after a meeting of the coaches, it was agreed he would be left out. The manager went to the midfielder's room to break the news, which was apparently met without fuss.A couple of months before, it had been announced Souness would be leaving Sampdoria to revolutionise Rangers. A Rangers side that would threaten Ferguson's Aberdeen and a Dundee United team represented in Mexico by five players.Neither Miller nor Bannon recalls any tensions as a consequence, although the former suggests the dynamic had shifted given more than half the squad were Scotland-based, and the latter recalls whispered conversations between the captain and defender Richard Gough, who would arrive at Ibrox the next summer."His room was two doors down from mine and I chatted to him a lot," says Rough. "He told me he was trying to sign Chris Woods and Terry Butcher, who were both in the England squad, and I just laughed. "But you could see he was really trying to learn about the Scottish game."Getting a savaging & being wired for soundBeing confined to the sidelines for the final game with Uruguay would afford Souness further opportunity to do so, with seven domestic-based players in the XI. And they would face just 10 South Americans for almost the whole contest, after Jose Batista was dismissed inside a minute for assaulting Strachan.Bannon "didn't think wee Gordon was going to get up" after what Miller calls a "savaging", while Rough says such treatment extended to the Uruguay fans, who spat and threw coins at the Scotland bench. So incensed was Scottish FA president Ernie Walker, he told the global media that "we found ourselves on the field with cheats and cowards and we were associated with the scum of world football".None of that changed the fact Ferguson's side were unable to muster the goal that would have put them through. The best chance fell to Liverpool's Steve Nicol, but his effort was clawed clear and the Scots were out after a goalless draw. There would be further disappointment for Rough after he arrived home. An imposing hi-fi, bought "for a right few bob" by himself and room-mate Graeme Sharp, became the prize for the winner of a series of inter-squad games. Rough was the victor and lugged the device all the way home as a present for his son. "He was delighted," he recalls. "Then he plugged it in and it blew up."[BBC]Scotland squadGoalkeepers: Leighton (Aberdeen), Goram (Oldham Ath), Rough (Hibernian)Defenders: Albiston (Man Utd), Gough (Dundee Utd), Malpas (Dundee Utd), McLeish (Aberdeen), Miller (Aberdeen), Narey (Dundee Utd)Midfielders: Aitken (Celtic), Bannon (Dundee Utd), Bett (Aberdeen), Cooper (Rangers), McStay (Celtic), Nicol (Liverpool), Souness (Sampdoria) Strachan (Man Utd)Forwards: Archibald (Barcelona), McAvennie (West Ham), Nicholas (Arsenal), Sharp (Everton), Sturrock (Dundee Utd)0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWilliams' Queen's run over as injured Mboko withdrawsSerena Williams' doubles campaign at Queen's has been curtailed as her playing partner Victoria Mboko has withdrawn with a left knee injury. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, 44, made her return to tennis on Tuesday after almost four years away from the sport. The pair had been scheduled to play their quarter-final on Thursday but Mboko, 19, suffered a nasty fall in her singles match on Wednesday, which forced her to retire from the match.Trailing 6-2 3-4 against Karolina Pliskova, the Canadian teenager cried out in pain as she went down clutching her knee and she limped off the court in tears. It means her compatriot Leylah Fernandez and Germany's Laura Siegemund, who they were scheduled to face in the doubles on Thursday evening, advance to the semi-finals.Williams returned with a winning performance on Tuesday as she and Mboko won 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 to upset third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.Playing 1,375 days after her last competitive match, Williams - one of the greatest players of all time - didn't look a touch out of place as she rediscovered her powerful serve and groundstrokes.Despite her Queen's campaign coming to an end, Williams' comeback is set to continue as she has signed up to play doubles in Berlin next week. The Times has reported that she will team up with Czech Karolina Muchova, the world number 10, in the German capital.Williams has also said she is considering playing doubles at Wimbledon, which starts on 29 June, and she has yet to rule out a return to singles in the future.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFC Barcelona President Laporta Makes Another New SigningRecently re-elected FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta has made another new signing in his reign according to El Confidencial.Getty ImagesRecently re-elected FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta has made another new signing in his reign according to El Confidencial, which cited anyonmous sources. The past fortnight has already seen Barça complete two new transfers. Out of nowhere, the Blaugrana signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United and agreed to pay a $80 million (€70 million) fee plus add-ons for the England left winger. The move has contributed to Barça reportedly deciding not to trigger Marcus Rashford’s $35 million (€30 million) buy option, meaning he should return to Manchester United after the World Cup.On the same day news about Rashford broke, however, it was also revealed that Barça will pay $1.72 million (€1.5 million) to Al-Ahly for striker Hamza Abdelkarim. Also set to feature at the FIFA tournament in North America like Gordon and Rashford, Abdelkarim might get the chance to train with Hansi Flick’s first team group in preaseason giving the lack of central 9 options. We’ve seen that with other reserve stars such as Marc Bernal and Marc Casado in recent camps. They’ve then been able to stay with the senior group for the upcoming campagin, after impressing in friendlies in the United States.Laporta has made another signing for FC BarcelonaWinning the election on March 15, Laporta is about to start his second term as the club’s leader and is already ringing changes.According to ‘El Confidencial’, Laporta has hired an executive at Banco Sabadell - one of the largest banks in Catlaonia and Spain - to become his new financial director.Sergio Serrano, the man in question, will lead the final phase of the restructuring plan Laporta launched when initially voted in by Barça members in 2021 for his second reign overall. The effects of the pandemic thrust the Catalans into a financial crisis which almost destroyed them as a club. On Laporta’s watch, however, FC Barcelona has returned to its Spotify Camp Nou stadium while also winning three La Liga titles and a number of other domestic honors. SPORT explains that Serrano’s main task will be refinancing Barça’s debt, which is currently estimated at $2.88 billion (€2.5 billion).Barça’s current credit rating is reportedly “on the borderline of what is considered a solvent company” according to the Catalan newspaper, meaning Serrano has “a lot of work ahead of him”.The mentioned amount includes a loan for $1.67 billion (€1.45 billion) from Goldman Sachs to help complete the Espai Barça project around the Spotify Camp Nou.Ara and SPORT have reported that Laporta will look to increase the loan and seek member approval for it. If given the green light, that move should see the debt increased by $346 million to $461 million (€300 million to €400 million).Meanwhile, Barça have to remain competitive on the pitch. Flick has managed this with a mixture of La Masia youth talents and the odd big name. The Gordon transfer is perhaps an indicator that FC Barcelona can make the marquee signings of a pre-pandemic yesteryear. Yet the current Julian Alvarez saga highlights the need for increased financial muscle as Barça need to up their $116 million (€100 million) bid for the Argentine. This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMQuick learner Caleb Lomu full steam ahead on move to right tackleFOXBOROUGH, MA - JUNE 09: Caleb Lomu #74 of the New England Patriots walks onto the field before New England Patriots Minicamp on June 9, 2026, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. (Photo by Summer Lamont/Icon Sportswire) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images One year after selecting a left tackle in the first round of the NFL Draft, the New England Patriots… selected a left tackle in the first round of the NFL Draft. A key difference between 2025’s Will Campbell and 2026’s Caleb Lomu, however, is that the latter was brought in with the intention of eventually changing positions. With his first offseason workout program coming to a close — at least in a full-team capacity, the rookie program will continue beyond minicamp — Lomu’s transformation from left to right tackle is full steam ahead. The rookie, after all, saw extensive action as the Patriots’ starting RT during both organized team activities and over the first two days of mandatory minicamp. The quality of reps might not be of the same variety as it will be come training camp, the volume is certainly making for an easier transition.“It definitely took some getting-used-to, just playing left all of college,” Lomu said following Wednesday’s practice at Gillette Stadium. “But just like I’ve said before, it’s just a thing where you got to just get used to it, get a few practices in. The first practice was a little weird at first, just because I wasn’t very used to it, but I feel very comfortable at right tackle right now, so it just feels natural now”For Lomu, the key in his development is not just maximizing the reps he is getting but also putting in extra work before and after practice. Hand usage needs to be refined, and footwork fine-tuned.“It’s just being able to get in there,” he said. “At left tackle, you’re striking with your left hand. At right tackle, it’s the opposite; you’re striking with your right. Footwork’s just completely opposite, too, so it’s just getting used to that, getting lots of reps before practice, during practice, and also after practice. Just getting down the rhythm of your feet, your hand and feet timing together. Basic thing is just reps, doing it over and over until it feels comfortable to you.”What has helped Lomu in that regard is nominal starting right tackle Morgan Moses being on a snap count this spring. This, in turn, has allowed the youngster to hoard practice opportunities with the starting offense and next to guard Mike Onwenu.Even when the first-team offense is not on the field, Lomu is getting his fair share of reps in: he has been lining up at left tackle with the second-stringers. Given that he ultimately projects as a backup swing tackle this season behind the Campbell-Moses bookend pairing, his ability to line up in more than one spot will be crucial. And despite the Patriots throwing a lot at him, the 21-year-old has fared well if his head coach is to be believed.“He is getting a lot of reps. I love the versatility,” Mike Vrabel told reporters on Wednesday.“When you get a young player, their willingness to learn and just adapt and adjust — there hasn’t been, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so used to this.’ I think it’s all new to him. So, his flexibility and versatility has been something that I think has stood out. He learns quickly, usually doesn’t make the same mistake twice. And it is different, so the guys that you are trying to put in different places and say, ‘You have got to get as much reps on the left as you do on the right,’ that’s important. He has done a nice job of that.”0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

While I probably won't watch all 104 matches, it's fair to say much of my summer is scheduled around this. For those who don't know, I'm an avid follower. I don't often get to enjoy sports purely as a fan, but soccer is my outlet. Weekend mornings are usually filled watching games.I attended a few games as a youngster at the 1994 World Cup and cannot wait to see it again on home soil! So, here's my guide to get the most out of the World Cup!Don't be an anti-U.S. Soccer snobThere's a weird sub-culture of soccer fans in the States who actively rain on the parade of the men's U.S. team (USMNT for short, by the way). It's weird.Yes, politics in this country are complicated but this is more a snobbery, often from folks who think they have a more sophisticated soccer palate and feel putting down the USMNT proves it.Don't do that. It's good for soccer in the country and for this World Cup if the USMNT does well. Just enjoy it.Root for the hostsThis merges from the last one. World Cups always carry an extra level of buzz if a host team does well. Japan and South Korea co-hosted in 2002 and South Korea's dream run to the semifinals was incredible. The U.S. had a surprisingly strong showing in 1994, pushing eventual champs Brazil to the brink in the knockout stages.Ideally, all of the U.S., Mexico and Canada teams get out of the group stage and at least one gets to the quarterfinals or further.Find a fun way to watch a big gameI'm fortunate enough to be able to get to see part of this World Cup in person (for fun, not work) as I drag my wife into the fray (she's excited about it, I promise!).But even if you're not getting to a game itself, find a fun way to watch one of the big games. Watch parties at bars or outdoor viewing areas can be awesome. More: Best bars to watch the World Cup at in Fort Collins? Here are 7Some places will have watch parties for a specific country, which can be quite fun to adopt some fandom. Cliche, but who you watch with is as much of the fun as anything. One of my best World Cup memories is the opening USMNT game of the 2014 World Cup (played in Brazil). Myself and a friend watched at a bar and spilled drinks in excitement a minute in as Clint Dempsey opened the scoring in the first minute. It was then jubilation as the Americans beat Ghana 2-1 with an 86th minute winner from John Brooks. Our celebration from that game lasted far into the night at a bowling alley bar in Minnesota. Unforgettable.Go to a good watch party. You won't regret it.Soccer or football?Want to call it football? Go for it. Want to call it soccer? Go for it.Find a random country to root forAnother way to build some interest and knowledge is to find a country beyond your own to latch onto. It's a low-stress way to get engaged in the tournament. The rules for this are simple: Don't pick one of the favorites (more on them below). It's fine to have your pick for who you want to win it all, but for this find someone fun to root for against all odds.Curacao? Yeah, I'll support the smallest nation to ever qualify. Austria? Went there on my honeymoon, yeah I'm a fan. Ecuador? Overshadowed in South America by powerhouses Argentina and Brazil but an absolutely excellent team. Japan? Fun football and great fans. Norway? The best pre-tournament team photo you'll ever see.Norway is coming🇳🇴 pic.twitter.com/SjESCYPLMd— Fotballandslaget (@nff_landslag) June 4, 2026Pick someone random and root like hell.Who will win the World Cup?Want to look smart at your watch party? Know that only eight nations have ever won the men's World Cup, Uruguay was the first winner and there hasn't been a repeat champ since Brazil won in 1958 and again in 1962 (Argentina won in 2022).I think only these teams can win this year: Spain, France, Argentina, England, Brazil, Germany and Portugal. It won't be England, history of historical choking says. France probably has the most top-to-bottom talent, but Spain is my favorite. Argentina and Portugal are sentimental picks for many as Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) sign-off on their (presumably) last World Cup.Follow the German guy on social mediaThere's so much noise around this World Cup outside the games themselves (understandably so in many ways) but don't forget at its core it's something to connect the world. No one is doing that better than random German guy (presumably) Freddy on X (@FreddyLA7) who is posting his marvels of travels around the States. Just had our first Waffle House experience at 1am. Great food, great prices, and friendly staff. 10/10, we will be coming back.😋 pic.twitter.com/QHgftpqfoX— Freddy🇩🇪 (@FreddyLA7) June 8, 2026It's quite innocent and fun. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEdwards sacked by Wolves following relegationEdwards sacked by Wolves following relegationWolves have sacked Rob Edwards as head coach after seven months in charge.Edwards took over at Wolves last November with the club bottom of the Premier League, and could not steer them clear of relegation to the Championship.“Following a comprehensive review at the conclusion of the season, the club has determined that a change in leadership is necessary as Wolves enters the next stage of its development,” Wolves said in a statement.“While the club recognises the significant challenges faced by Edwards and his staff during their tenure, and acknowledges the commitment and professionalism they demonstrated throughout, it ultimately concluded that a different sporting direction would provide the strongest platform for future success.”Executive chairman Nathan Shi said: “I would like to personally thank Rob and his staff for everything they have given to Wolves during what has been a very difficult period in the club’s recent history.“Rob accepted the challenge of returning to Wolves at a time when the situation was extremely challenging, and throughout his time here he has conducted himself with professionalism, integrity and commitment.“This has been an extremely difficult decision. Following the end of the season, we undertook a thorough review of every aspect of the football operation.“This process involved careful consideration of many factors and extensive reflection on what we believe is required to help the club progress over the coming years.“Our decision was not about character, professionalism or dedication. It was about determining what we believe gives Wolves the strongest opportunity to move forward from a sporting perspective.“While there were positive signs and areas of progress, we ultimately concluded that a different football direction would better align with the style, identity and level of competitiveness we want to establish at the club.“It would have been easier to continue with what was familiar. However, leadership is not about choosing the easiest path, but about making the difficult decisions we believe are right for the future of the football club which will put Wolves on the strongest platform to move forward.“Our ambition is to build a football club capable of achieving sustainable success. That requires clarity of vision, alignment throughout the football operation and the courage to make difficult decisions when we believe they are in the best interests of the club.”Gil Vicente boss César Peixoto is believed to be the frontrunner to take over from Edwards.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM49ers, Kyle Shanahan were Kings of this type of offense in 2025The San Francisco 49ers were the best offense in the NFL when operating out of 21 personnel last season, according to ESPN analyst Matt Bowen. This personnel grouping includes two running backs, one tight end and two wide receivers on the field at once. Typically, one of those two running backs on the field is a fullback, who can create run-game leverage through key blocking assignments, while also setting up play-action plays that mirror backfield action to open up holes in coverage for the tight end and receivers. The look can also shift easily into 12 or 11 personnel to exploit matchup advantages against base defensive fronts. No team used it better than San Francisco. Per ESPN, the 49ers ran 179 pass attempts and 206 rush attempts out of the grouping, totaling 2,248 yards and 14 touchdowns — the most snaps of any team in the league. It's a staple of coach Kyle Shanahan's offense. The 49ers had a league-high 35.84 EPA, 21 explosive passes and 19 explosive rushes in the grouping last season. With the versatility of fullback Kyle Juszczyk, Shanahan can create run game advantages while leaning on his play-action pass concepts and the receiving traits of running back Christian McCaffrey.Juszczyk has been a cornerstone of Shanahan's system for years, and made the Pro Bowl in all nine of his seasons with the 49ers, as well as two first-team All-Pros in the past three years. McCaffrey, when healthy, is one of the most dangerous receiving backs in the league — a matchup problem that opposing defenses simply cannot account for with a single player. Most of the same offense is back in 2026, as well as new receivers and running backs. This should give Shanahan every reason to lean on his most productive personnel grouping once again. This article originally appeared on Niners Wire: NFL personnel groupings: 49ers dominated in 21 personnel in 20250 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCostacurta: ‘Leao has never been a leader, Milan aren’t losing a Kaka or Shevchenko’Costacurta: ‘Leao has never been a leader, Milan aren’t losing a Kaka or Shevchenko’Alessandro Costacurta feels that it is wrong to consider Rafael Leao a ‘leader’ of Milan, but has criticised the Portugal international for his inconsistency, claiming that he has ‘never been a champion like that, even if he thinks he is’.Leao is among the star players in line to leave Milan after a dismal end to the 2025-26 season, which saw the Rossoneri miss out on Champions League qualification despite the fact that they had spent a large chunk of the campaign in second place.Leao has recently given a series of interviews while away on international duty with Portugal, hinting rather heavy-handedly that his time in San Siro has come to an end: ‘I need a new challenge, I think the Premier League or LaLiga would make more of my talent,” he recently told Sport TV in Portugal.Costacurta on Leao: ‘I’ve never considered him a Ballon d’Or level player’Alessandro Costacurta Commissioner of FIGC looks on before the International Friendly match between Italy U21 and Belgium U21 at Friuli Stadium on October 11, 2018 in Udine, Italy. (Photo by Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images)Speaking in a critical, in-depth interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Costacurta claimed that it is wrong to consider Leao a true leader of Milan, but criticised his inconsistency and insists that he is not a Ballon d’Or level player, ‘even if he thinks he is’.“Personally, I’ve never considered him a Ballon d’Or level player,” said Costacurta. “I played with some of those: They are at an entirely different level. If he leaves, you’re not losing a Kaka or a Shevchenko. Rafa has never been a champion like that, even if he thinks he is.“If he changes his mind, and if the real leaders come in and he is given a different role, he could also still be useful in the right context. But he has to be seen for what he is: A very good player, not the star of the team.”Click here to read the full interview with Costacurta.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPlayer ratings: England sweep aside Costa Rica in final World Cup warm-upPlayer ratings: England sweep aside Costa Rica in final World Cup warm-upEngland capped off their 2026 World Cup preparations with a needed 3-0 victory over Costa Rica, marking a significant step up in quality from Saturday’s laboured outing against New Zealand.Goals from Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon, and Ollie Watkins reminded their supporters lining the stands and those that stayed up to watch on television back home that England can play football, and they can play it well. The result was made even more impressive in the context of an hour-long delay due to rain, followed by nearby lightening strikes, and though it wasn’t a vintage display it was enough to ease any nerves going into the tournament. This wasn’t quite a vintage display, but goals from Declan Rice, and ensured a perfect sign off for Thomas Tuchel’s side before kicking off their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Group L next Wednesday.FromTheSpot looks at who stood out ahead of that opening fixture on the 17th of June against Croatia.Starting LineupJordan Pickford – 5/10The only player on the pitch to arguably put a foot wrong. The Everton man’s goal was never troubled, but his sloppy pass in the first half gifted Fernando Batista’s side a good half chance they couldn’t take.Reece James – 7/10The Chelsea right back had very little to do defensively but looked dangerous down the right hand side, combining well with Noni Madueke and Declan Rice. If he can stay fit, he looks likely to be Tuchel’s first choice at right back going forward.John Stones and Ezri Konsa – 7/10These two have been grouped together because their performances were virtually identical. Both looked composed on the rare occasions they needed to be, and avoided drawing attention to themselves with silly mistakes. You can’t ask for much more from your centre back pairing, especially against such subpar opposition.Nico O’Reilly – 6/10The Man City starlet performed reasonably but got bullied off the ball a few times. Against better opposition he could struggle.Elliot Anderson – 7/10The Nottingham Forest dynamo didn’t produce much of note but looked energetic throughout, and played a couple of nice passes.Declan Rice – 9/10 (Man of the Match)Arsenal’s star midfielder opened the scoring within ten minutes with a well taken first-time finish, and looked a constant threat in the final third with some classy line-breaking through balls. No wonder he’s in the Ballon D’or conversation.Noni Madueke – 8/10Madueke’s end product was lacking at times, particularly when he hit the post with his weaker foot when faced with an open goal. But overall he looked lively and direct, and proved himself an able deputy for Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka.Jude Bellingham – 7/10Stourbridge’s answer to Lothar Matthaus started quietly but grew into the match as it wore on. He produced a moment of magic in the second half with a jinking run before squaring for Eberechi Eze, who’s shot won a penalty after being blocked by a Costa Rica elbow.Anthony Gordon – 9/10For the second successive game Barcelona’s shiny new £70m signing looked like one of England’s best players. The winger was a menace down the left flank, and set up Rice’s goal with his own solo run and cross before converting the aforementioned penalty in the second 45. Half a point has been deducted for an embarrassing first half swan dive, but other than that the ex-Newcastle man looked flawless and has surely sealed a starting spot against Croatia.Harry Kane – 7/10Bayern Munich’s number 9 didn’t score on this occasion but got into some good areas and went close a couple of times. He also produced a trademark crossfield ball for Gordon which the Liverpudlian wasted with his aforesaid dive.SubstitutesDean Henderson – 6/10Crystal Palace’s number one had nothing to do at all, so his middle-ground rating reflects that. Not bad, not outstanding either.Djed Spence – 6/10Similar to Henderson the right back had nothing to do defensively, but didn’t get forward as much as he is capable of. An underwhelming display overall.Marc Guehi and Jarrell Quansah – 6/10Again, like Stones and Konsa these two are being rated together because of how similar their performances were. Both had a quiet evening and saw little to no action in their final third. Next.Dan Burn – 7/10The ‘boy from Blyth’ did his job defensively when required and looked a danger from set pieces in the latter stages.Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10The Mancunian showed glimpses of what he is capable of here and there, and forced substitute keeper Abraham Madriz to be alert to a fizzing long-range effort.Bukayo Saka 7/10Despite not being fully fit the Londoner created some decent half chances, and came close to a goal of his own late on.Eberechi Eze 8/10Talk about making an impact. Tottenham’s terroriser in chief won a penalty, had multiple shots of his own blocked, and carved open the Costa defence with a sumptuous through ball for Morgan Rogers which the Villa man couldn’t take advantage of.Morgan Rogers 6/10Like Madueke the 23-year-old missed a sitter, but it was his parried shot which ultimately led to England’s third. Even so that howler has surely cost him a starting berth against Croatia.Marcus Rashford 8/10Gordon’s main rival fashioned a brilliant close-range opportunity for himself courtesy of a mazy run from out wide, only to be denied by a John Ruiz block. A promising performance to add to his outing against New Zealand.Ollie Watkins 8/10The forward was in the right place and the right time to head in the rebound after Rogers’ strike was batted out carelessly by the goalkeeper, and will do well to keep taking up similar positions in England’s group stage matches.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVery Strange Breakout Candidate Named for VikingsJeffrey Becker-Imagn ImagesExpecting big things from outside linebacker Dallas Turner in 2026? How about second-year wideout Tai Felton? Neither of those men is the most logical breakout candidate for the 2026 Minnesota Vikings — because that distinction belongs to left tackle Christian Darrisaw, says CBS Sports. It’s a bizarre selection for a breakout player, as Darrisaw broke out five years ago.H2Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw pursues a loose football during fourth-quarter action against the Los Angeles Rams at U.S. Bank Stadium. On Dec. 26, 2021, Darrisaw recovered a fumble during a pivotal sequence, showcasing hustle and awareness in a hard-fought contest late in the regular season. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports.CBS Sports: Vikings Breakout Player = Christian DarrisawZachary Pereles nominated a breakout player for each NFC team this week, landing on Darrisaw for Minnesota: “If you ask Vikings fans, they’d probably say it’s past time for Christian Darrisaw to become a star. The left tackle showcases elite talent when he’s on the field. The issue is he hasn’t been on the field enough: zero full seasons.”“He has played in just 17 games total the past two seasons after signing a four-year, $113 million extension in July 2024. He then tore his ACL and MCL in October and struggled with knee issues for seemingly all of 2025.”Pereles is correct with his first sentence. Minnesotans are not looking for Darrisaw to achieve stardom. They want him to be healthy. “He’s an absolute road grader in the run game; since Darrisaw arrived in 2021, the Vikings have a 46% rushing success rate with him on the field and a 41% rushing success rate without him,” Pereles added. “In 2025, that would have been the difference between the NFL’s 17th-best rushing attack and its 31st-best rushing attack.”DJ Record ScratchPereles is right about one thing — Vikings fans considering Darrisaw a stud. From their perspective, he broke out sometime in mid-2021 as a rookie. In fact, during the dark years of 2021 and 2023, Darrisaw was a bright spot, a player fans could tout as, “At least we have Darrisaw.” That crowd spends more time wondering why Darrisaw has never reached a Pro Bowl, despite a Pro Bowl resume, than labeling him as a breakout candidate. Most would’ve picked the aforementioned Turner for the “breakout” candidacy, as outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard was traded in late April. It’s finally time for Turner to start after the Vikings traded the farm to get him in 2024.But nope — CBS Sports says Darrisaw could be on the cusp of something big in 2026. Career Resume for DarrisawDarrisaw’s track record is clear: when healthy, he is one of the best left tackles in football.Since 2021, the Vikings have witnessed his prowess over 3,440 total snaps — 2,216 in pass-blocking and 1,224 in run-blocking. His performance has been exceptional, highlighted by an overall grade of 90.4 in 2022, followed by 82.4 in 2023 and 81.4 in 2024. PFF ranked him seventh among all offensive tackles after the 2023 season, noting his career-best 85.3 pass-blocking grade, which was third in the NFL.Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw prepares for the snap during a road matchup against the Washington Commanders at FedExField. On Nov. 6, 2022, Darrisaw anchored Minnesota’s offensive line while continuing his emergence as one of the NFL’s premier young left tackles during a successful Vikings campaign. Mandatory Credit: Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports. The 2023 season is particularly significant, as Darrisaw maintained his elite blindside protection despite Minnesota cycling through four quarterbacks: Kirk Cousins, Joshua Dobbs, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall. His run-blocking grades have been consistently strong: 90.6 in 2022, 73.9 in 2023, 82.3 in 2024, and 69.8 in 2025. His pass-blocking grades show even greater consistency: 82.4, 85.3, 79.9, and 71.3 from 2022 to 2025.PFF recognized his potential early, ranking him among rookie left tackles with the lowest pressure rates since 2010 after his first season. The primary concern, of course, revolves around his recent availability. Darrisaw has played in 58 games and started 56 over five years. His talent undeniably qualifies him as a franchise left tackle; the Vikings simply need him to complete a full season.Actual Breakout Candidates? If one classifies Darrisaw’s breakout label as bogus, here’s the real list of possible Vikings contenders in 2026:Tai Felton (WR)Jordan Mason (RB)Myles Price (WR)Bo Richter (OLB)Dallas Turner (OLB)Jay Ward (S)Rookies, too — the Vikings have about 30 on the roster right now — could break out, but no one considers a rookie shining for the first time all that remarkable. It happens. Minnesota Vikings linebacker Dallas Turner watches drills during minicamp at the team’s training facility in Eagan. On June 10, 2025, Turner continued his offseason development as coaches evaluated young defenders and installed schemes ahead of training camp, with expectations rising for the former first-round draft pick. Mandatory Credit: Matt Krohn-Imagn Images.Darrisaw said last week that his knee feels its best in two years, notable because he tore his ACL in October 2024. Mankato Free Press‘s Abbie Parr noted, “Darrisaw, who’s entering his sixth season with the Vikings after being drafted in the first round in 2021, wore a leg sleeve but no knee brace during Thursday’s organized team activities practice.”“He participated in everything from O-line drills to 7-on-7 work. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said the team had planned on Darrisaw being available in this part of the NFL calendar and that he’s been participating ‘pretty much in totality.'”He turned 27 last week.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPackers minicamp notes: 'Wow' throw from Love, strong day for BullardThe second day of the Green Bay Packers' mandatory minicamp took place on Wednesday and featured some big plays on both sides of the ball. Here is everything you need to know from the practice. The injury list remained essentially the same as Tuesday, with the only slight change Luke Musgrave joining the rehab group, after exiting the previous practice early. As was the case on Tuesday, Micah Parsons and Devonte Wyatt did not practice. The rehab group in full:Aaron BanksWarren BrinsonDrake DabneyKamal HaddenJavon HargraveDomani JacksonTucker KraftIsaiah McDuffieJacob MonkSkyy MooreLuke MusgraveCollin OliverJordon RileyBenjamin St-JusteZach TomThe starting skill position players on offense during team drills were Jordan Love at quarterback, Josh Jacobs at running back, Josh Whyle and Messiah Swinson at tight end, Matthew Golden and Savion Williams at wide receiver, as Matt LaFleur and his coaching staff continued to rotate there.Asked about Whyle before practice, LaFleur said: “He’s shown a lot of good things. I’ve always really liked Josh’s versatility in terms of being a moveable piece, but he’s gotten some opportunities on things that maybe Luke (Musgrave) would’ve done.“Yesterday he caught a little post route over the middle and made a great play on that. The more reps he’s getting, I think the better he’s getting."On the offensive line, the starters from left to right were Jordan Morgan, Jager Burton, Sean Rhyan, Anthony Belton and Darian Kinnard. John Williams, a seventh-round pick from last year who has mostly been at center with the second-team offense, replaced Burton at left guard for a spell. The highlight of the day on offense came early in practice, as Love rolled to his left, before unleashing a deep bomb back to his right, hitting Jayden Reed down the sideline for a 70-yard touchdown, after he beat Evan Williams. In his crossbody bag pic.twitter.com/hqPYXVRcw8— Green Bay Packers (@packers) June 11, 2026Later, Love fired another impressive throw on the left sideline to Christian Watson, who was covered well by Brandon Cisse on a comeback route, putting the ball where only Watson could get it between Cisse and Javon Bullard for a completion.Elsewhere on the offensive side, Savion Williams showed some explosiveness on a wide receiver screen, while Kyron Drones impressed in the 7 on 7 period, finding J. Michael Sturdivant between defenders on the sideline after the receiver ran a double move.In less positive news, the second-team offensive line struggled, with Williams making an error with a very high snap, and Dillon Wade false starting multiple times. These may be the knock-on effects of missing several starters on the O-line.On defense, the starters were Karl Brooks, Nazir Stackhouse and Chris McClellan at defensive tackle, Barryn Sorrell, Edgerrin Cooper, Zaire Franklin and Lukas Van Ness at linebacker, Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine at corner and Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams at safety. The battle is on for playing time in the defensive backfield this season, and both Cisse and Valentine impressed with their coverage at different times, with the rookie looking good in particular, breaking up a pass intended for Isaiah Neyor at one point.Bullard had a strong day, enjoying a battle with Watson throughout practice, including a leaping interception in front of him on a pass from Love which he undercut. Elsewhere, Kitan Oladapo had a pass break up working against Brenden Rice with the backups.Up front, rookie pass rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton caught the eye, beating Brant Banks and John Williams at different times for pressures on backup QB Tyrod Taylor and generally playing with energy and intensity. UDFA signing Nyjalik Kelly also beat Dalton Cooper well for a would-be sack.Edgerrin Cooper was active knifing into the backfield for what would have been a tackle for loss on Jacobs, and later breaking up a pass aimed for Swinson during the 7 on 7 period. On special teams, Savion Williams and Bo Melton got the first cracks at kick returns, with Pierre Strong and Jaden Nixon next up. Nixon showed some juice on a return, as well as on an inside run on offense.Skyy Moore, who was in the rehab group, was seen observing the kick return period along with Jacobs and MarShawn Lloyd. It was the kick coverage unit which was more impressive though, with Bullard, Arron Mosby and Nick Niemann all getting downfield in a hurry to make stops.Lucas Havrisik, who is hoping to compete with rookie Trey Smack this summer, went eight of eight on his kicks, including makes from 58 and 53, but it is worth noting the practice took place inside the Don Hutson Center due to inclement weather, so there was no wind to deal with. This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: Packers minicamp notes: 'Wow' throw from Love, strong day for Bullard0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup 2026 Group D Guide: US face Paraguay, Australia and Turkey in banana-skin groupPhoto by Omar Vega/USSF/Getty ImagesGroup D gives the United States a huge chance to make a statement on home soil, but it also feels like one of the more dangerous groups at the World Cup.Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be expected to progress in front of their own fans, yet Paraguay, Australia and Turkey all bring awkward problems. None of them should arrive fearing the hosts. For the US, the pressure is obvious. Pochettino has serious talent to knit together, and anything short of a strong run will feel like a missed opportunity to give home fans an unforgettable summer.Photo by Brad Smith/ISI Photos/USSF/Getty ImagesWorld Cup Group D guideUnited StatesThe USMNT have the home advantage, but they also carry the biggest pressure in the group. Pochettino has players with real pedigree, from Christian Pulisic to Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Malik Tillman. The question is whether he can make it work in an attacking sense. Pulisic is clearly the best player in the squad and is coming off a decent season with AC Milan, but the balance around him still needs to be right.Maybe the pressure of a home World Cup helps them, but it could just as easily weigh them down.ParaguayParaguay should not be underestimated. They finished level on points with Brazil and Ecuador in South American qualifying. They also had one of the strongest defensive records, behind only Ecuador, and have become very hard to break down. Since their manager came in, they have lost just one competitive game, a 1-0 defeat to Brazil. The problem is Julio Enciso’s injury. The former Brighton forward is their biggest attacking threat, and if he misses the tournament, Paraguay will have to find a different way to carry danger in the final third.AustraliaAustralia are unlikely to be the most exciting team in Group D, but they could still be a very awkward opponent. Tony Popovic has brought a pragmatic and defensively solid element to the side. The warm-up games have pointed toward a 5-4-1 shape. That will make Australia difficult to pull apart. The Socceroos also have tournament experience. They have been regulars at recent World Cups and reached the last 16 in 2022, so they will not be overawed by the stage.Photo by Ahmad Mora – UEFA/UEFA via Getty ImagesTurkeyTurkey look like the most talented squad in the group. Hakan Calhanoglu’s fitness will be important in that deeper midfield role. We’ll see how ready he is.Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz give them a level of individual talent that no other team in the group can clearly match. If those players click, Turkey should have enough to take control. There is always a risk with Turkey because expectation can bring volatility, but on pure ability they look the best side here. They should be aiming to top the group.Predicting Group D at the World CupFor the reasons mentioned, it looks like Turkey’s group to lose. But fear not, the US will rise to the occasion and take second place. They won’t get there on reputation alone, and Pochettino has to right his woeful European record quickly, but the quality they possess should be enough to see them through to the knockouts.Paraguay’s lack of attacking firepower sees them finish third, with Australia rounding out what looks like being one of the most competitive groups at the tournament.READ MORE: Arsenal legend Ian Wright feels sorry for ’embarrassed’ USA soccer fans ahead of World Cup0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid consider moves for Manchester City pair to meet Jose Mourinho demandsReal Madrid consider moves for Manchester City pair to meet Jose Mourinho demandsReal Madrid are set for a significant summer, with the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager for a second spell, and a numbre of players who have flattered to deceive over the last two seasons. The two areas that Mourinho is reportedly keen to address are defence and midfield, and Manchester City could provide a happy hunting ground to do so, following the exit of Pep Guardiola.Mourinho has reportedly told Los Blancos that he wants to bring in 4-6 signings this summer, and all of them relate to the backline or central midfield. For the latter position, Mourinho has seemingly requested the signing of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Ibrahima Konate, who is a free agent after leaving Liverpool, and Denzel Dumfries, for whom Real Madrid will pay a €20m release clause for, are expected to be the first two of those of arrivals.Real Madrid ponder move for Manchester City duoImage via EFEThere have been a number of links between Real Madrid and star centre-back Josko Gvardiol in recent weeks, and Caught Offside say that they are considering moves for two more of City’s backline. The names in question are Portuguese duo Ruben Dias and Matheus Nunes. Manchester City have little desire to sell either of them, but a number of clubs are knocking on the doors of City’s stars in case Guardiola’s exit has a major impact on their future.Mourinho keen on versatility and experienceImage via EFEMourinho is one of the main advocates for the deal, feeling that Dias could add significant experience and would be an upgrade on Dean Huijsen. Meanwhile the signing of Dumfries would presumably reduce the need to sign Nunes, who has often played at right-back under Guardiola, but of course by trade is a central midfielder, which is a position Los Blancos are keen on strengthening.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMorocco loses star winger Ezzalzouli and Aguerd to injuries for World CupBASKING RIDGE, N.J. (AP) — Morocco replaced two injured players in its World Cup squad ahead of an opening game against Brazil, including star winger Abde Ezzalzouli.FIFA confirmed late Wednesday that former Barcelona player Ezzalzouli and Marseille defender Nayef Aguerd were withdrawn from the Morocco squad for the tournament.Ezzalzouli helped Real Betis qualify for next season's Champions League and was a potential breakout star at the World Cup. Aguerd was a cornerstone of Morocco’s historic semifinals team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. They were replaced by Amine Sbaï of French club Angers and Marwane Saadane, who plays in Saudi Arabia for Al Fateh.Morocco opens against Brazil on Saturday at MetLife Stadium near New York, then plays Scotland on June 19 near Boston and finishes Group C against Haiti on June 24 in Atlanta.Ezzalzouli injured his right knee in a warmup game against Norway last weekend, though initial tests suggested he could be retained in coach Mohamed Ouahbi's squad to play in the knockout rounds.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe New York Knicks have stopped believing in impossible. They may be a team of destinyThe Knicks are one win from the third championship in their 80-year history and first since 1973.Photograph: Al Bello/Getty ImagesWhat does a team of destiny look like? You know it when you see it. The evidence has been mounting for weeks – months, even – that this year, despite decades of precedent to the contrary, that team is the New York Knicks. On Wednesday night, the proof overflowed in the hallowed halls of the Mecca. One of the most improbable comebacks in NBA history – and the largest ever in an NBA finals game – saw New York erase a 29-point deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4, leaving Taylor Swift and members of Haim leaping for joy courtside and the 58-year-old building shaking like a bounce house.Related: Knicks beat Spurs with largest NBA finals comeback to move to brink of first title since 1973The irony, of course, is that these same Knicks have so often found themselves on the wrong end of heartbreak in those very halls. As recently as last year, the Indiana Pacers reminded them of the sport’s cruelest lesson: no game is over until the clock hits zero. In some ways, those Pacers were the last team to carry the sense of inevitability that seems to surround this Knicks squad. Their run, however, ended in crushing fashion with a Game 7 defeat. The Knicks appear mindful of that history. “It’s still 0-0” and “still a long way to go” were common refrains throughout their post-game press conferences on Wednesday night. Some, including head coach Mike Brown and players Jose Alvarado and Karl-Anthony Towns, showed visible emotion.“I’m not going to sugarcoat this,” Alvarado said. “I was about to cry. I’m at Madison Square Garden, end of the fourth quarter, playing with these guys, and we’re playing for something special.”Others, such as team captain Jalen Brunson and game-winning playmaker OG Anunoby, were more stoic. But the message was unanimous: as extraordinary as this victory was, there is still one more game left to win.The Knicks have become something of comeback specialists in recent years. There have been multiple double-digit rallies during this 2026 playoff run alone, after a handful of stunning recoveries against the favored Boston Celtics last postseason. So they certainly have some experience in the art of the improbable. But perhaps the real preparation for nights like this comes from the heartbreak. Being on the receiving end of an unlikely comeback teaches you, in unforgettable fashion, that no lead is safe and no game is ever truly over. The scar tissue of past playoff disappointments, the callouses left by victories snatched away at the last moment – those can be life’s greatest teachers. And beyond the wins and losses (and Knicks fans will be the first to tell you there have been plenty of losses), this is, in many ways, a team of castoffs. The Dallas Mavericks let Jalen Brunson walk, and that was after he was passed over in the first round of the NBA draft as a two-time national champion at Villanova. Karl-Anthony Towns was abruptly moved by the Minnesota Timberwolves after years as the face of the franchise. Josh Hart bounced around the league. Alvarado went undrafted. Even Brown was dismissed as coach of the Sacramento Kings not long after helping them “light the beam”.Perhaps that’s why this group never seems to believe they are beaten. Too many of these players have spent their careers being told what they couldn’t do to accept that a game is over before the final buzzer sounds.“I think everybody, to a certain degree, at some point in life is overlooked,” Brown said late Wednesday night. “Just to have the ability to stay with it, stay with it, stay with it, stay with it, especially when you get knocked down, to me, that defines who you are. Even if you don’t have the quote-unquote ‘ultimate success’ that you think you deserve, if you get knocked down in life and you’re able to get back up and keep fighting, that’s a freaking win.”The idea of a team of destiny raises an interesting question: how much control do we really have over our own fate? Is destiny a path laid out before us, something inevitable and immutable? Or is it something we create ourselves? Maybe it’s a bit of both. The Knicks found themselves pondering those questions after their historic victory.“You’ve got to have a little luck in sports,” Brown said. “But you can also make your luck, too.”Towns echoed the sentiment.“Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes you make your luck,” he said. “We made our luck today.”For most of Wednesday night, it seemed as though New York’s luck had finally run dry. Team owner James Dolan had spent the previous few days making himself the center of attention on a decidedly ill-advised media tour, while some fans half-jokingly wondered whether the bad vibes lingering from the Commander in Chief’s controversial – and sleepy – appearance at Game 3 had cursed the Knicks’ title hopes. The Spurs certainly played as if they believed it. Victor Wembanyama even went so far as to proclaim “I’m in your head” to the Knicks during the first half, and he may not have been wrong. Until he was.Because that’s the thing about a resilient group like this one. That’s the thing about a team of destiny: however unconventional the path, however theatrical the punctuations along the way, it somehow arrives where it’s meant to. And for the 2026 New York Knicks, that journey is now just one win away from an NBA championship.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMColts mixing and matching at linebacker position during minicampIn a revamped linebacker room, the Indianapolis Colts are doing their due diligence as they search for the best starting combination. This is a room that experienced heavy turnover this offseason. Zaire Franklin and Germaine Pratt, who led the Colts in snaps last season at this position, are no longer on the team.Instead, the Colts signed Akeem Davis-Gaither in free agency and drafted CJ Allen and Bryce Boettcher, along with adding two undrafted rookies to the room as well. These new additions join Austin Ajiake and Jaylon Carlies, who returned from last season.Presumably, Allen will start at MIKE linebacker and is the projected favorite to wear the green dot on defense. There is less certainty, however, in regards to who will start next to him. Davis-Gaither, who has ample experience in Lou Anarumo's defense from their time together in Cincinnati, may be the front-runner, but it's not a given he secures that spot either. Boettcher or Carlies could push for playing time.So as the Colts search for stability at a position that has its share of unknowns, a lot of rotating is taking place in these minicamp practices. According to Jake Arthur of Colts Roundtable, a number of players have seen snaps with the starters."It appeared the coaches were being deliberate in trying to see different combinations with the starters. Boettcher, CJ Allen, Jaylon Carlies, and Akeem Davis-Gaither all saw first-team reps," Arthur wrote. At this stage of the offseason, there isn't a lot that we should read into this. It won't be until the pads come on and training camp begins to unfold that we will gain clarity around where things stand in the linebacker room. But considering the overall inexperience at this position and the number of new faces, the Colts are doing the right thing by experimenting with different combinations and vetting their starting options. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Colts casting wide net as they search for answers at linebacker0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSpurs labelled ‘dumbest basketball team in the history of civilisation’ after historic Knicks comebackCharles Barkley has called the San Antonio Spurs “the dumbest basketball team in the history of civilisation” after they squandered the biggest lead in NBA Finals history to leave the New York Knicks on the brink of a first title for more than 50 years. The Spurs looked set to level the best-of-seven series at 2-2 when they led by 29 points at Madison Square Garden, only to see the Knicks steadily whittle that advantage down and snatch a dramatic 107-106 victory when London-born OG Anunoby scored a tip-in basket with 1.2 seconds left on the clock. It sent the MSG crowd – which included the likes of Taylor Swift and Timothee Chalamet – wild and move the Knicks to within one victory of a first NBA championship since 1973.The Knicks celebrated the unlikeliest of victories (AP)The previous biggest comeback in the NBA Finals was 24 points, by the Boston Celtics against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2008, but the Spurs were up by 29 in the second quarter and still led by 27 at half-time – the largest such advantage for a road team in Finals history – yet only scored 30 points in the final two quarters. That prompted former NBA MVP Barkley, who was courtside as an analyst for ESPN, to lay into San Antonio.“We saw the dumbest basketball team in the history of civilisation,” fumed Barkley on the Inside the NBA postgame show."That was some of the most mismanaged, stupid basketball... Hey, when you blow a 29-point lead, the other team has to help you, and the San Antonio Spurs helped the New York Knicks win this game. That was some of the most stupid-ass stuff I’ve ever seen on a basketball court.”Charles Barkley was left unimpressed by the Spurs display (Getty)Another NBA icon, Shaquille O’Neal, agreed completely with his fellow analyst’s assessment.“Congratulations to the Knicks for coming back but Chuck, I agree with you,” said O’Neal. “They played terrible basketball, they got comfortable. “They got comfortable with the lead, they were already talking about going back to San Antonio and they just didn’t play smart. You never know what a champion is until you become a champion and, tonight, the Knicks fought like a champion.”Game 5 is Saturday night in San Antonio, where the Spurs will need to find a way to rebound with no margin for error – now requiring three victories on the spin to deny the Knicks the title.Spurs star Victor Wembanyama couldn’t stop his side falling to a harrowing defeat (Reuters)And San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama, the NBA’s defensive player of the year, was at a loss as to how his team squandered such an advantage. “I can’t really explain it right now,” admitted Wembanyama, who scored a team-high 24 points and claimed 13 rebounds.“I don’t know. I think it’s just execution, greediness of some sort. We clearly weren’t the most hungry in the second half.”0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMO'Neill confirmed as Celtic's permanent boss after double triumphCeltic manager Martin O'Neill has agreed to remain at the club on a one-year contract (THOMAS KIENZLE)Martin O'Neill has been named as Celtic's permanent manager at the age of 74 after leading the club to the Scottish double during his interim reign last season.O'Neill agreed a one-year contract with the option of a further year's extension. He spent two spells in temporary charge of Celtic during a chaotic campaign that ended in spectacular fashion."It is once again a great privilege for me to continue as Celtic manager," O'Neill said Thursday."Last season will live long in all our memories and to be part of that success has in a big way whetted the appetite to work again for more days like those and bring our supporters those moments."O'Neill, who had already enjoyed a successful stint at the Glasgow club from 2000-2005, first returned to Celtic Park in October after Brendan Rodgers's exit.Despite winning all eight of his domestic matches, O'Neill left when Wilfried Nancy was hired on a full-time basis. However, Nancy was quickly axed following a miserable run and O'Neill returned in January.O'Neill inspired a remarkable title-winning campaign as Celtic pipped Hearts on the final day of the season with a dramatic win against the Edinburgh club.Hearts, chasing a first title since 1960, led the way for much of the season but Celtic benefitted from a hugely controversial penalty to beat Motherwell in their penultimate game.O'Neill's men came back from a goal down to beat Hearts in Glasgow in a last-day showdown, securing the club's fifth successive title.Seven days later, O'Neill secured his ninth trophy as Celtic manager when the Hoops beat Dunfermline 3-1 in the Scottish Cup final.Former Celtic striker Robbie Keane had been linked with the job in recent weeks. But pro-Palestinian Celtic fans opposed that potential move due to Keane's spell in charge of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.Urging Celtic to build on last season's double, O'Neill said: "Celtic can never rest on past success so we are aiming to drive forward together as we aim to deliver again for the club and our fans."I thank our fans for their ongoing support, it means everything. I look forward to being back at Celtic Park, when we will come together and strive to bring our fans the success which that support deserves."Celtic's principal shareholder Dermot Desmond vowed the club will back O'Neill's vision in the transfer market. The Celtic hierarchy has endured criticism from fans over their failure to spend big money on signings in the past."Time and time again Martin has shown his qualities," Desmond said."We know he is a winner, we know what the club means to him and he continues to be the outstanding candidate."He knows the demands at Celtic and I know how determined he is again to bring success to the club and our supporters."The club will support Martin fully again across the close season to make sure we are well prepared to achieve domestic success and compete on the European stage."smg/jdg/pb0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJets praised for drafting David Bailey over Arvell ReeseThe New York Jets had a sizable decision to make during the 2026 NFL draft. As owners of the No. 2 overall pick, the Jets possessed the opportunity to take the best defensive player available. The thought leading up to the draft was that Darren Mougey would choose David Bailey or Arvell Reese. The Jets ultimately took Bailey and have received plenty of offseason praise for that decision. Meanwhile Reese slid all the way to the New York Giants at No. 5 overall. Bailey will be playing EDGE for the Jets, while the Giants are expected to keep Reese at off-ball linebacker.Bleacher Report recently singled out 25 offseason moves. They complimented the Jets for choosing Bailey over Reese."With the Las Vegas Raiders expected to take Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, the New York Jets had a tough decision between top pass-rushing prospect David Bailey and a versatile standout defender in Arvell Reese," Moe Moton wrote. "After trading Jermaine Johnson II to the Tennessee Titans, Gang Green made the right move to fill a void in its pass rush rather than figure out where Reese would fit in the defense."Bailey should have a profound impact on the Jets' defense. The former Texas Tech standout should be an immediate threat as a pass rusher. Hopefully all this offseason praise leads to a productive rookie season for Bailey. This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: Jets praised for drafting David Bailey over Arvell Reese0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘He’s happy here’: Barcelona defensive target’s agent shuts down exit talk‘He’s happy here’: Barcelona defensive target’s agent shuts down exit talkBarcelona have been linked with a number of central defenders ahead of the summer transfer window, with the area proving to be an Achilles heel for Hansi Flick’s men ever since Inigo Martinez left the club. One of the first names that the club were linked with was Inter Milan central defender Alessandro Bastoni. However, after a few weeks of optimism, talks surrounding the deal have cooled down. The Italian centre-back is reportedly one of the names admired by Deco and Hansi Flick as Barcelona assess possible defensive reinforcements. However, Bastoni’s agent, Tullio Tinti, insisted that the 27-year-old is happy at Inter and fully committed to the club.As quoted by MARCA, he said: “Bastoni is an Inter player in every sense. He has two more years on his contract. He always wears the Inter shirt. He respects the contract and is happy here, there has never been a problem.”Not going anywhere. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)Agent responds to Barcelona interestWhen asked directly about Barcelona, Tinti did not deny that Bastoni is admired by major clubs. He said: “A footballer like him is liked by all the big teams. But he is an Inter player and has a contract with Inter. He will surely stay here. In football anything can happen, but he is happy where he is.”Bastoni’s price, reportedly around €70 million, was already a major obstacle. Now, his agent and Inter are publicly closing the door.Barcelona may need other solutionsBastoni would be an excellent fit for Barca. He is left-footed, composed in possession and experienced at the highest level, exactly the type of defender who could strengthen Flick’s back line.Bastoni will not be joining Barcelona. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)However, there is no use in pursuing a deal when the door is closed, and it does look like Bastoni will be staying with Inter for the foreseeable future. What Barcelona need is a defender who has qualities like Bastoni’s. They cannot afford to be chasing a name this summer and should instead focus on the profile. The agent’s words now leave Deco with one less name to worry about on the defenders shortlist this summer. It remains to be seen whom Barcelona sign as their new central defender ahead of the new season.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTennis players banned from bringing their dogs to WimbledonTennis stars at Wimbledon will be unable to bring their dogs onto site despite many players now travelling with their pets. French Open champion Mirra Andreeva recently celebrated on court with her coach Conchita Martinez’s puppy Luna after winning her first grand slam title at Roland Garros. World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka also celebrated with her puppy Ash after winning the Miami Open, while Marta Kostyuk, Anastasia Potapova and Anna Kalinskaya were among the other players to bring their dogs into player areas at the French Open. (Getty)The French Open even employed two dedicated dog walkers as part of its player support services, as well as sitters to look after the pets with their owners were playing matches. Pets can offer emotional support and companionship for players during long and often stressful tournaments, with some tour events also now accommodating them on site. Wimbledon, however, only permits service dogs and search dogs to enter the grounds, with their policy communicated to the players before the start of this year’s tournament. The pets who are currently travelling in Europe would have to remain at home during the day, but Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton didn’t foresee the policy being an issue. “The only dogs that we permit on site are service dogs and those security and search dogs,” Bolton confirmed. “We're in constant communication with the players and we don't anticipate that being a problem, but that’s our policy and it always has been.” Aryna Sabalenka celebrated her Miami Open win with her dog Ash (Getty)Wimbledon, meanwhile, revealed that Andy Murray’s statue will be delivered by 2027, the 150th anniversary of the Championships. The All England Club also confirmed the arrival of ‘VAR-style’ video review and expressed confidence in their electronic line calling system, which malfunctioned last year and missed three calls in one game. “There was an issue last year that was rectified and the review was undertaken during last year's Championships, Bolton said. “We will always test our systems, every single system we have as we go into the Championships, but we're confident that that issue was in fact rectified last year, so certainly we'll be going into this year.” Visual indicators to complement live electronic line calling will also be introduced, showing out and fault calls on scoreboards across all courts during the main draw and qualifying.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAsotin County American Legion program back and rolling after year-long hiatusJun. 11—The silence lasted only one summer, but according to supporters, a summer too long. After the Asotin County Blues (17U) failed to field an American Legion baseball team in 2025, community members, parents, sponsors and American Legion supporters went to work to ensure the program's absence would not last long. The efforts paid off as the Blues returned in 2026 with strong local sponsorships, lower costs and a roster spanning three schools. Now, the program's leaders hope the revival is the first step toward rebuilding a long-term Legion baseball program.Looking at the diamond, Blues coach Jace Wessels said the Asotin County (2-4) is "looking pretty good" so far into the season. The Blues will next face the Lewis-Clark Cubs in Clancy Ellis Tournament action at 6 p.m. today at Harris Field.Bringing the Blues back to lifeDenetta Nugen, the president of the Blues American Legion program, said that the planning for this team goes back to 2025.She said that a board got together and started to brainstorm ways to bring the program back."What we noticed is that in 2025, last year, they weren't able to form a team for a variety of reasons," Nugen said. "There was a small group of us, along with a few of the members from the American Legion, and a few of us were like, 'Gosh, that is not right to not have an American Legion baseball team.' There are enough players out there who want to continue playing and bettering their skills, so we were like, 'OK, we're gonna find enough people that are interested in seeing what we can do to get this revitalized.'"AdvertisementIt started with a town hall meeting, pitching the program to the community. She said that the community immediately gave its support with sponsorships, parents and players.Sponsorships from businesses included: the Hughes Foundation, Rick's & Heights Family Foods, Lewiston Motor Company, Battles & Ells, P1FCU, Twin River Bank, Seekins Precision and the Pomeroy Babe Ruth program.A large part of the sponsorships were due to the fact that Nugen wanted to lower the cost of joining the team."We just have always tried to make sure from the beginning ... that it was providing an opportunity for any of our youth that (were) in that age group that had an interest in improving, and continuing playing baseball and being a part of the American Legion team," Nugen said. "We knew that that was going to come too from finding strong sponsorship because one of our goals — and we were able to accomplish it — was to lower player fees, lower cost."Rather than having parents question if they could afford to have their child play, the board tried to make it clear that they were lowering the price to join.Asotin County is pulling players from Asotin, Clarkston and Pomeroy."I'm proud of three different schools coming together," Nugen said. "Historically, the team was made up of Asotin and Clarkston, but now (we're) bringing in a third school, so seeing those players come in and get to know each other, (and) not only to get to know each other, but being able to play as a team and be teammates, and have fun on the field, off the field — very proud of that. The way that everybody has welcomed each other, very proud."She said that the Blues have "lofty goals" of adding more teams in the future, including a possible 15U team. An idea is to get the younger players who just finished Little League to join the Legion program and keep them involved in baseball during the summer. What the Asotin County team looks like in 2026First-year coach Wessels is leading the Blues in 2026. He spent the past spring as an assistant coach at Orofino.Wessels said that the effort that the team gives is "amazing," that the group is willing and wanting to learn and that they give it their all during games and in practice. The team is built of six Clarkston players, two Asotin players and five Pomeroy players."It's really a lot about development right now," Wessels said. "Obviously, we're trying to win games and do great, but it's a lot about development. It's getting these kids better, building this program back up. It's always been a great program."In discussing standout players, Wessels mentioned Conrad Nelson, who has "been everywhere for (the Blues)." Nelson plays catcher, middle infield and pitches. He said that Parker Nugen will be a key bat and arm for the team, same for Blyton Holman. He also said that Nolan Newberg is a great hitter and Jacob Ostermiller is a great catcher and middle infield player for the program.Wessels said those players are the leaders of the Blues."They're trying to help these kids get better," Wessels said. "Everyone's trying to help each other get better. They're doing the work, they're listening, they're the first ones here, the last ones to leave. They're getting extra work, they're doing everything they need to do to get better. It's always 100% with those guys. It's been showing on the field for them too."He said the goal from Day 1 with the team was to develop the players to become better for their high schools during the season. It takes buy-in from the players, but they seem to be responding well.Wessels was excited on how tight-knit the group seems to be."They've been bonded right now," Wessels said. "I mean, we just finished up practice, probably 20-30 minutes ago, and I still got a group of guys here hanging out, having fun being kids. So, I would say it's just they're here having fun getting better."Junt can be reached at 208-848-2258, tjunt@lmtribune.com or on X @TrevorJunt.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHaiti’s World Cup shirt banned after FIFA raises concerns over designPhoto by Leonardo Fernandez/Getty ImagesHaiti have been forced to alter their World Cup shirt design just days before opening their campaign against Scotland. The change came after FIFA raised concerns over imagery included on the shirt, which had been worn by Haiti during their pre-tournament friendlies. The original design featured an illustration of the Battle of Vertieres in 1803, which secured Haiti’s independence, alongside the country’s flag.FIFA equipment regulations prohibit political, religious or personal messages or slogans on kit, and the governing body requested changes to the design before Haiti’s opening fixture.Haiti begin their first World Cup finals campaign since 1974 against Scotland at Boston Stadium, Foxborough.Haiti kit changed before Scotland openerPhoto by Leonardo Fernandez/Getty ImagesThe issue has emerged at a significant moment for Haiti, who are preparing for their first appearance at a World Cup finals in 52 years. The Caribbean nation will face Scotland first before meeting Brazil and Morocco in Group C.According to the BBC, Haiti were forced to change their kit design after the shirt failed to comply with FIFA rules. The illustration on the shirt referenced the Battle of Vertieres, a defining moment in Haitian history. It had appeared on the shirts used in both of Haiti’s pre-tournament friendlies before FIFA requested modifications. The decision means Haiti will enter the tournament with an amended version of the kit, rather than the original design prepared for their return to the World Cup stage. The country last appeared at the finals in 1974, when they lost all three group matches and conceded 14 goals.Saeta says design was not politicalColombian manufacturer Saeta said the original shirt was intended as a tribute, not a political statement. The company said the design was created to honour “the men and women who contribute every day to Haiti’s future”.Saeta also said FIFA determined that certain visual elements could be interpreted differently under its equipment regulations. The manufacturer said it respected the process and implemented the final requirements communicated by FIFA.Football’s equipment laws state that equipment must not have political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. The case highlights the sensitivity around national symbols and historical references on international football kits. For Haiti, the immediate focus will now return to their opening match against Scotland and a difficult Group C campaign.Their return to the World Cup remains the central story, but the late shirt change has added an unexpected issue to their tournament build-up.Read more:US men’s national team couldn’t hide their excitement after Knicks’ historic comeback winJoseph Blatter referee remark exposes World Cup concernWorld Cup 2026 Group D Guide: US face Paraguay, Australia and Turkey in banana-skin group0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFury v Hall exhibition is boxing's latest surreal boutTommy Fury (left) has competed in 11 professional bouts but will face Eddie Hall in an exhibition contest [PA Media]The world of influencer boxing takes another surreal turn on Saturday when former World's Strongest Man Eddie Hall faces reality television star and professional boxer Tommy Fury in Manchester. The heavyweight contest at the AO Arena is understood to be an exhibition bout, meaning it will not count towards either fighter's professional boxing record. It is scheduled for six two-minute rounds, bringing together two Britons from entirely different worlds. The event is promoted by Misfits and is the latest example of a boxing show that increasingly blurs the lines between professional sport, entertainment and social media celebrity.Fury's professional resume includes high-profile victories over influencers-turned-boxers KSI and Jake Paul. He insists his ambitions remain tethered to world-title aspirations. In reality, however, the 27-year-old has cemented himself as the poster boy for the influencer boxing boom.Hall, 38, headlined what was billed as 'The Heaviest Boxing Match in History' in 2022 against rival Hafthor 'Thor' Bjornsson. After losing to the Icelander in the exhibition bout, Hall transitioned into MMA and scored a knockout victory over fellow former strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski last year. The undercard perhaps best illustrates the unusual crossroads at which modern boxing now finds itself.Sharing the bill is social media personality 'The Ibiza Final Boss', real name Jack Kay, who became an internet sensation in 2025 after videos of his confident dancing, distinctive bowl haircut and gold-chain-wearing persona went viral on TikTok.Also appearing on the card is two-time Olympic taekwondo gold medallist Jade Jones. A family feud and 100lb size differenceThe origins of this unlikely pairing lie in a simmering family feud better suited to the scripted world of World Wrestling Entertainment. Tensions began when John Fury - father of Tommy and Tyson - took exception to comments Hall made about wanting to fight Tyson. Hall accused John Fury of being a bully and Tommy eventually stepped forward to settle the dispute. Although there is no upper weight limit at heavyweight, Fury is still expected to give away significant size.Fury has spent the majority of his boxing career competing around cruiserweight and weighed 14st 4lb (94kg) for his most recent outing. Hall, meanwhile, tipped the scales at more than 28st 8lb (181 kg) during his strongest-man peak. The 2017 World's Strongest Man winner is expected to weigh around 5st lighter than at Friday's weigh-in, but it could leave as much as a 7st weight disparity between the two men when they step into the ring. The theatre of influencer boxing draws the crowdBut the sheer eccentricity of the event extends beyond the size difference. Influencer boxing has become a polarising development in combat sports over the past decade. While some celebrate the audience figures and attention it brings to boxing, others argue it diminishes the traditions of the sport. To add to the theatre of it all, former UFC fighter Darren Till claims he has been barred from attending the contest and has suggested he may attempt to enter the arena in disguise. Till and Fury have their own history after a proposed bout between the pair collapsed in 2024 when Fury pulled out when Till suggested he could resort to MMA tactics. There is also speculation Fury - who found fame on reality dating show Love Island - could reveal his new daughter's name on fight night. Yet despite all the questions surrounding the contest and whether it makes a mockery of traditional boxing, thousands are expected to fill the arena. For all its critics, influencer boxing continues to draw crowds and Saturday night in Manchester will be another reminder of that.Boxing schedule and results 2026Watch every Born to Brawl episode More boxing from the BBC Notifications, social media and more with BBC Sport0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

But Mike Brown closing with Alvarado instead of Mikal Bridges was a gamble that paid off massively. Alvarado is a frenetic ball of energy and has been completely unafraid of the moment. The Spurs were trying to hide Wemby on him on defense to allow the big man to stay parked in the paint. Alvarado wouldn't let that happen, moving constantly and hitting huge buckets. NYK scored 1.727 points per possession with these two on the court in G4.Alvarado just kept screening and moving when Wemby was "guarding" him in the 4Q. https://t.co/h8Ugh7wx2zpic.twitter.com/hD1htJggyx— Caitlin Cooper (@C2_Cooper) June 11, 2026Alvarado hit all three of his buckets in the fourth, including two threes and a layup that he sneaked in when Wemby's back was turned. He also chipped in three assists. The 6-foot guard took down Goliath. Victor Wembanyama was gassedAlvarado's play was so effective in part because of how little Wembanyama had left in the tank. He averaged just 29.2 minutes during the regular season. The Spurs have ramped that up for obvious reasons in the playoffs, and they rode him the hardest they have in this series as their lead slipped away. Wemby logged 44 minutes in Game 4, his most outside of his 49 minutes in a double-overtime victory in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. He played the final 17 minutes without a substitution and 29 of the last 30 minutes. He was missing plays he normally makes. Wemby had been getting breathers in fourth quarters from free throws and challenges. That didn't happen on Wednesday. Mitch Johnson was judicious with his timeouts, calling only one between the eight and four minute mark as the Knicks closed the lead from 15 points down to four. The fatigue showed up during those last eight minutes. Wemby looked a half step slow defensively, barely missing closeouts that he would have made earlier in the game. And he uncharacteristically missed both his free throws with under two minutes remaining. On offense, Wembanyama wasn't a presence. He took only two shots during that span: a jumper just inside the 3-point line set out of timeout and another one with three minutes remaining. Wembanyama wasn't getting deep catches due to a combination of the Knicks' physicality and the Spurs not doing a good job of running plays to get him better positioning. The Spurs didn't have anyone else who could pick up the slack. The Spurs' guards got rattledThe focus will be about Wemby, but the trio of Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and De'Aaron Fox had some bad mistakes in those last eight minutes.Castle lost track of the clock and barely got a shot up that didn't hit the rim. Harper made a bad overhelp on a drive, allowing the hottest shooter of the game in Anunoby an open corner 3. Harper then threw the ball away on a desperation pass when he had timeouts to use. Fox was the worst of the three. The Spurs were having extreme difficulty breaking the paint as their offense collapsed in the second half. A lot of that was on him.Fox had 44 touches in the second half, the most of any Spur. Only 5 touched the paint. San Antonio scored 0.387 points per chance out of his touches. With 1.2 seconds left and down 107-106, everyone in the building knew that the ball was going to go to Wemby, probably for a lob attempt. Mitchell Robinson was going to stay glued to him in order to prevent that from happening. That opened up a lob play for Stephon Castle, who was wide open coming off Wembanyama's rip screen. It was a brilliant play design by Johnson, using Wemby as a decoy. Towns saved the day by getting a hand on what would otherwise have been a wide open layup for the game-winner.Castle was so open pic.twitter.com/8uoN8OLXoN— Steph Noh (@StephNoh) June 11, 2026LeBron James' 2016 Cavs are the only team to have come back from a 3-1 deficit. They needed a Draymond Green suspension in order to do it. With Wemby only one flagrant foul away from his own suspension, the Spurs aren't going to get that kind of good fortune. This series isn't over, but it completely shifted after this game. The Spurs would have been in the driver's seat, regaining home court advantage. Instead, they'll need a miracle stretch.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 36 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση
