SPORTS.YAHOO.COM❌ Nightmare start at the World Cup! Sithole at fault for goal, sees red❌ Nightmare start at the World Cup! Sithole at fault for goal, sees redThings could hardly have gone much worse for South Africa’s Yaya Sithole in the World Cup opener against hosts Mexico. The 27-year-old endured a real nightmare on his World Cup debut. In a way, his name says it all. After just under nine minutes, the man wearing number 13 miscontrolled the ball just in front of his own penalty area, which ultimately led to Mexico taking the lead. Shortly after the half-time break, Sithole was once again in the spotlight. After losing a foot race with Gutierrez, he made a last-man challenge and was accordingly shown a red card. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArmada softball stuns Lakeshore, advances to first state final since '79This is a developing story. Check back for updates. EAST LANSING — This wasn't David and Goliath, although the tale of the tape made it look similar. If the Armada High School softball team was to reach its first MHSAA state final since 1979, it would first have to vanquish Stevensville Lakeshore, a program that's won eight state championships since 1995.But as the Tigers have done so often this postseason, they discarded the pregame notes and slayed yet another softball dragon.Freshman pitcher Megan Cox was superb, going the distance to guide Armada past Lakeshore, 4-2, in an Division 2 state semifinal at Secchia Stadium on Thursday, June 11.The Tigers improved to 36-8 overall and advanced to Saturday's state final — their first since 1979 — Ogemaw Heights or Farmington Hills Mercy.Armada wasted no time and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lilyana Piconke hit a one-run double to center field that scored Helena Fettue from second base. A few batters later, Cox sent Piconke home on an RBI single to left field.Meanwhile, Cox was dealing on the mound. She retired the first 17 Lakeshore batters, including 12 on strikeouts. The Tigers added another run in the third thanks to a Lancers error. With Piconke on second base and two outs, Taylor Capozzo hit a pop fly that was dropped by Lakeshore's shortstop. Piconke, who had tagged up, scored with ease.In the fourth inning, with runners on second and third, Addy VanHoeck hit a bloop single to shallow center field that drove Ava Kuroski home from third. That put Armada in front, 4-0.The Lancers' first hit — and baserunner — was a two-out double in the top of the sixth on a pop fly to left field.Lakeshore then scored on an error (a dropped pop fly to left field) with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. The Lancers drew closer, 4-2, with another run on an RBI single to right field.First pitch for Saturday's state championship game is 12:30 p.m.--Armada is 35-8 overallThe winner advances to Saturday's state final against Ogemaw Heights or Farmington Hills Mercy.Contact Brenden Welper at bwelper@usatodayco.com. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTottenham Hotspur Are Hoping To Land This Paris Saint-Germain Keeper: Should De Zerbi Snap Him Up?Tottenham Hotspur Are Hoping To Land This Paris Saint-Germain Keeper: Should De Zerbi Snap Him Up?In a recent report, L’Equipe claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to land Paris Saint-Germain keeper Lucas Chevalier. It has been revealed that Spurs could face competition in the form of Besiktas in the race to land the French custodian this off-season.Chevalier’s Important Role At Paris Saint-GermainThe 24-year-old was a good rotational piece in PSG’s squad last season when he produced a series of solid displays for them in Ligue 1. Chevalier made 26 appearances for the French outfit in the previous campaign, conceding 28 goals and earning ten clean sheets on all fronts. The French sensation is currently among the most talented keepers in Ligue 1. Thus, it is no wonder that Spurs are showing interest in recruiting him in this summer transfer window. His current contract at the Ligue 1 club will run out in the summer of 2030, which could make it difficult for Tottenham Hotspur to sign him on the cheap later this year.PARIS, FRANCE – NOVEMBER 04: Lucas Chevalier of Paris Saint-Germain warms up prior to the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD4 match between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Bayern München at Parc des Princes on November 04, 2025 in Paris, France. (Photo by Franco Arland/Getty Images)Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Roberto De Zerbi Snap Chevalier Up This Summer?Chevalier is a solid handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make some important saves at the back for his team. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when being chased down by the opposition and is a good passer of the ball as well.Standing at 1.89m, the French sensation can use his commanding frame to dominate his penalty area when defending the opposition’s set-pieces. However, it remains to be seen whether he can cope with the high intensity of the Premier League if Spurs manage to get him on board this off-season.We can expect Chevalier to add more quality to Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi’s backline. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting place at the North London club in the coming years. At 24, Chevalier has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a worthy target for Spurs to pursue this summer. However, De Zerbi has to give him some time to adjust to life in England. All in all, Tottenham would be wise to go all out to snap Chevalier up before the end of this transfer window.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 31 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDoes one Colts' positional battle have an early leader? One less talked-about positional battle taking place for the Indianapolis Colts is at kicker.During Thursday's final minicamp practice, both Spencer Shrader and Blake Grupe attempted a handful of field goals, with one kicker perhaps taking an early lead into training camp.According to Jake Arthur of Colts Roundtable, Shrader would go just 3-for-5 on his attempts, missing one to the left and another to the right. Grupe, meanwhile, went 5-for-5.Arthur added that it was unclear how far each field goal attempt was from.Of course, the caveat here is that this was only one day, and there is a long way to go before a final decision has to be made.Notes from the #Colts' final day of mandatory minicamp.https://t.co/wLmcRqY9mt— Jake Arthur (@JakeArthurNFL) June 11, 2026Shrader missed most of last season after sustaining an ACL injury. Before that point, he was 14-for-14 on extra points and 13-of-14 on field goals, which includes hitting a game-winner against Denver.Grupe joined the team in Week 14 and was a perfect 10-for-10 on field goal attempts and 11-for-11 on extra points, according to PFF. The Colts then re-signed him earlier this offseason.Special teams coordinator Brian Mason said earlier this offseason that this year's kicking competition between Grupe and Schrader will be structured similarly to last year's.Grupe is the far more experienced kicker of the two, which could prove to be an advantage for him. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Is Colts' competition at kicker taking shape early on?0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 31 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDodgers place Will Smith on IL with neck inflammation; catcher had missed past 4 gamesCatcher Will Smith was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, a move that appeared to be inevitable for the past week. Smith, 31, hasn’t appeared in a game since June 5 due to stiffness in his neck. His IL stint is retroactive to June 8, making him eligible to return on June 19. The Dodgers announced that Smith was going on the IL with neck inflammation. He told reporters that he’s dealing with an inflamed disc in his neck, but termed the injury as “minor,” according to the California Post’s Jack Harris.Smith has played in 52 games, compiling a slash average of .249/.338/.382 with six home runs, five doubles and 23 RBI in 201 plate appearances. Behind the plate, he’s thrown out five of 29 basestealers while allowing three passed balls and seven wild pitches. Advanced metrics credit him with 4 Defensive Runs Saved, the second-most among MLB catchers. While Smith has missed the past four games, the Dodgers were playing with Dalton Rushing as the only healthy catcher on the roster. To fill for Smith on the major-league roster, Chuckie Robinson was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he was batting .260/.321/.442. The Dodgers apparently hoped to avoid putting Smith on the IL, perhaps hoping he could catch Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday. Ohtani allowed four runs (three earned) with six hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings in a 9-8 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rushing batted 0-for-4. But after Smith missed four games, the team decided that they could backdate his stint to the last time he played, meaning he would miss another 10 days. Rushing will start Thursday’s matchup with the Pirates, but Robinson will get the nod on Friday against the Chicago White Sox, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 31 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMexico 2-0 South Africa: 10-man World Cup hosts beat 9-man Bafana BafanaMexico 2-0 South Africa: 10-man World Cup hosts beat 9-man Bafana BafanaRaul Jiménez ended his wait for a World Cup goal on his first full start for Mexico as the co-hosts coasted to a bizarre 2-0 win over South Africa that saw three red cards on opening night at the Mexico City Stadium.Julián Quiñones got the co-hosts to the perfect start by slamming a powerful shot home after centre midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was caught taking a heavy touch 20 yards from goal, and came close to a second when he hit the base of the post.Target man Jiménez headed in the second to put the game beyond doubt either side of red cards to Sithole and Themba Zwane, before César Montes was shown red for the same offence as the former’s as El Tri achieved a first win over South Africa for 26 years. As it happenedJiménez saw the first chance go amiss when Ronwen Williams got down low to palm aside his first time shot connecting with a dangerous low ball in from the right, denying the 35-year-old Wolves forward the dream moment.South Africa didn’t heed the early warning as Sithole took a heavy touch on the edge of his own box and was dispossessed by Érik Lira, before left midfielder Quiñones punished him with an emphatic finish.Jiménez was in behind with a hint of offside as he flicked a smart ball over the top towards goal but was kept out by an Williams for a second time in the first half. But the visitors had little time to organize themselves and appeared in need of a regroup at half time when Quiñones was picked out by another low ball into the box and he side-footed his effort against the post.Guitiérrez had the chance to add a deserved second in stoppage time but toe-poked a tame effort wide of goal, yet Mexico were well and truly in control on home soil.Bafana Bafana were reduced to 10 men mere moments into the second half when Sithole compounded a disastrous start to his World Cup campaign by pushing Gutiérrez to ground as the last defender, denying a clear goalscoring chance.Jiménez finally put an end to his long wait for a goal at the World Cup, sending Roberto Alvarado’s pinpoint cross into the net with a bullet header from point blank range, wheeling away in tears while the fans behind the goal went into a frenzy.Referee Wilton Sampaio was then called over to the pitch-side monitor after VAR spotted second-half substitute Zwarne appearing to take a swipe at the head of an opponent off the ball, resulting in his prompt dismissal. But that was the not the last sending off, as the referee also dismissed Mexico centre-back Montés in additional time for a foul to the right of goal, claiming that he had teammates covering the anticipated cross into the penalty area.South Africa, who had little penetration all game, did not improve since regaining the one-man advantage, as El Tri secured the three points to go top of Group A in the strangest World Cup game in recent memory to open the tournament.Mexico analysis: home advantage takes full effect in bizarre openerMexico’s players arrived in the capital knowing full well what their fans’ expectations were. Win the game, and win it well.Being the hosts and kicking things off always adds an extra layer of pressure, but El Tri hadn’t beaten South Africa for nearly three decades.Worse than that, they exited the last tournament in Qatar at the group stage, having reached the knockouts in the seven tournaments prior. But seeing defensive midfielder Érik Lira pressing as high as South Africa’s own box, it was clear the co-hosts were evidently embracing said pressure. And it proved key to the opener from Julián Quiñones, as Lira robbed Sphephelo Sithole of the ball in a dangerous position and the Al’Quadsiah striker slotted it into the net.Quiñones outscored both Cristiano Ronaldo and Ivan Toney in the Saudi Pro League, with 33 goals to his name this season, and struck with the confidence of having done so.Jiménez got his dream moment with all of the thousands of home fans behind him, but there was perhaps more to Mexico’s home advantage than the fans and, indeed, two reds.At 2,200 metres above sea level, the Mexico City Stadium is considerably higher than South Africa’s national home, the FNB Stadium, making the air quite thinner than most places. The Mexican players will have been well-acquainted with the environment, and took full advantage of it with their brave high press and ruthless finishing. Now the side tipped as favourites to top Group A are off to the dream start in their third tournament on home soil. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWho won Mexico or South Africa? Mexico soccer wins in World Cup openerMexico was so much better than South Africa in its 2026 FIFA World Cup opener that it didn't need a gift from the guests. El Tri got one anyway in the 9th minute and rode it to a comfortable 2-0 win against a 9-man team, giving Mexico the fast start to the tournament they had coveted. The hosts dominated throughout and could have won by a much larger margin, but they got the goal they needed early when South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole, attempting to play the ball out of the back, gave the ball away under pressure from Mexico’s Charly Lira.More: Who will win the 2026 World Cup? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJustin Jefferson plans to work with Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy ahead of training campVikings head coach Kevin O'Connell told reporters on Thursday that the team's quarterback competition will continue into training camp, but that won't be the next time that Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy get to work with their top wide receiver. Justin Jefferson declined to share any of his views about where things stand between the two quarterbacks at the end of the team's offseason program and said it is going to be O'Connell's call about which way to go heading into Week 1. Given the uncertainty, Jefferson said that he feels it is important to get as many reps as possible with both quarterbacks and that he'll use the time before training camp to address that desire. “For sure, both. Just carrying on what we have been doing for the past couple weeks and just continuing that throughout the summertime," Jefferson said. "It definitely would be impactful. Just to continue to see my route running, to continue to get that timing down pat is really key so we're not really starting over back in training camp. We'll just continue to do the same things that we're doing here but at a different location."After some tumultuous seasons at the position, Jefferson said recently that he'd like to play with the same quarterback for multiple years. It remains to be seen if that will happen, but building a close relationship with whoever winds up with the job in 2026 would probably help the chances of making that happen.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 32 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTwo former Revolution play each other in Canada vs. Bosnia matchCanada plays its first home match of the 2026 World Cup against Bosnia and Herzegovina Friday afternoon. Former Revolution star Tajon Buchanan will make his second World Cup appearance for Canada. Buchanan was a great player in New England from 2019-2021. His speed made him a tough matchup for defenders and helped lead the Revolution to the best record in Major League Soccer in 2021. Buchanan had 13 combined goals and assists at just 21-years-old. Since then, Buchanan has gone on to play for clubs in Belgium, Italy and Spain. He had a breakout year for Villareal in La Liga this past season, scoring seven goals in twenty-one starts.“He did extremely well here and just blossom. We sold him to Club Brugge and then he continued to move on,” Revolution Sporting Director Curt Onalfo said. He’s a great player for the Canadian National Team and an exciting player to watch. He keeps getting better so really excited to see how he does."Onalfo says the winger has “superior athleticism” and is very quick. The Revs drafted Buchanan 9th overall in the 2019 MLS Draft. One of his former teammates, Andrew Farrell, is not surprised to see how important Buchanan has become to his club and country. “We all saw the raw talent, the physicality, the physical attributes he had,” Farrell said. “Every time he beat the guy one time in a game it was over. We knew feed the ball to Tajon. Once he like beat the first guy one time, he knew he could beat him every time.”Farrell was a veteran starting defender when Buchanan was young and making a name for himself. Farrell is eager to see what Buchanan will do for Canada this summer. “Amazingly talented player who’s done it in so many different leagues at a high level and with the national team. I’m sure he’s so pumped to be able to play in front of his whole friends and family,” Farrell said. “Canada has a really good team. They’ve given the USA a run for their money in this side of the World Cup qualifiers. I think they have a really good team.”On the other side, Bosnia and Herzegovina will showcase a young, confident player Esmir Bajraktarevic. He was born in Wisconsin but decided to join Bosnia in order to play more minutes. At just 21-years-old, Esmir hit the game-winning penalty kick to eliminate Italy from World Cup contention back in March. The goal sent Bosnia to the country’s second-ever World Cup appearance. The midfielder was signed into the Revolution Academy at 15-years-old. He spent four seasons in New England before he was sold to a Dutch club. Revolution Captain Carles Gil knows what makes a good midfielder. “Amazing talent. He was very young here with us. He improved a lot, and now he’s doing very good in Europe,” Gil said. “It’s a guy who has a big personality. He likes the big challenge, so he feels good in this type of moments of games.”Onalfo says it’s awesome to see Esmir in big moments for a national team. “I’m very proud of him. He was very ballsy. He was on a pathway to potentially be on the U.S. team, and he chose to go to Bosnia. Sure enough he ends up being the deciding factor to play in a World Cup here in the U.S. This is an incredible story,” Onalfo said. Onalfo says he has exceptional skill. “I’ve been doing this my whole life and guys like him play at the highest level. They play on the national teams, and I’ve been around those players and he has all those qualities,” Onalfo said. “You have to have exceptional ball handling skills and that’s what he has. But he’s also got a major edge. When you combine that mentality and that edge with that exceptional talent, amazing things happen.”Buchanan and Esmir are both going to play attacking roles in the midfield. During the game, we could see the two making chances or even scoring for their countries. For Farrell, it’s cool to see former teammates on soccer’s biggest stage. “It’s so cool to see like former players you train with and play with being at high stages,” he said. “It’s cool seeing these moments for these guys who we shared a locker room with for a couple years.”Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.Follow Boston 25 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch Boston 25 News NOW0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 32 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy the Texas attorney general warned the Big 12 about punishing Texas Tech, Brendan SorsbyPregame preparations are made before the Big 12 championship game between BYU and Texas Tech held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News The Brendan Sorsby saga has added a new key figure — Texas attorney general Ken Paxton. In a letter sent to Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and board of directors chairman Douglas Girod, Paxton informed the league that it could face significant legal and financial consequences for punishing Sorsby, according to a Thursday report from Mark Schlabach of ESPN.Paxton claimed the Big 12 would be held liable for “Texas Tech’s lost football revenues, damages to its alumni contributions and damages to its recruitment, plus attorneys’ fees,” per Schlabach, with the total cost being “substantially more than $200 million.”Sorsby, who transferred to Texas Tech from Cincinnati in January, was previously ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA following investigations of his gambling activity, which included him betting on Indiana football games while a member of the Hoosiers’ program in 2022.However, retired Texas judge Ken Curry granted the senior quarterback a preliminary injunction earlier this week, rendering Sorsby eligible to play in 2026.Curry’s ruling has proven controversial around the sports world, with Big 12 athletic directors meeting Tuesday to express their frustration on the matter.According to Schlabach, leaders from around the Big 12 met on Thursday to discuss the possibility of using league Bylaw 3.6 to punish Texas Tech for playing Sorsby. The Bylaw grants the Big 12 authority to discipline a member institution “engaged in any action or a course of conduct materially adverse to the best interests of the Conference taken as a whole” and can be carried out through a supermajority vote. But Paxton said exercising Bylaw 3.6 in this situation would be “unlawful” and “expose the Conference to substantial liability.”“Texas Tech is confident the Big 12 will choose to act within the confines of the law and respect both the judicial process and its own Rules and Bylaws,” Paxton wrote. “However, should the Big 12 seek to sanction Texas Tech for acting consistent with the Order, Texas Tech will pursue all legal avenues to protect its interests and those of Texas Tech’s student-athletes.”Yormark has confirmed that he received Paxton’s letter.“Shortly before the start of (Thursday’s) Big 12 Executive Board meeting, the Conference received a letter from the Texas Attorney General’s office notifying the Conference of potential legal action from Texas Tech if the Conference pursues certain actions under its Bylaws,” Yormark said in a statement. “We are taking time with our legal counsel to understand the concerns of the state and will meet again with the full Board next week. We moved forward with our Executive Board today in preparation for our full Board meeting on Monday. We had a good and informative discussion. Sentiment among the Executive Board was no different from what we heard from the (athletic directors) earlier this week. Our discussion with the full Board will determine our course of action, and all options remain on the table.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark speaks as part of a press conference before the Big 12 championship game between BYU and Texas Tech held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 32 Visualizações 0 Anterior

He is the scheduled keynote speaker for the Iowa Democratic Party’s Liberty & Justice dinner on July 12, the state party’s largest event of the year, and one that often draws big-name political figures, The Des Moines Register noted. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) headlined the 2024 event, possibly signaling his own interest in running for president in 2028. Related Pete Buttigieg will be the next president. Here’s why. “Pete has shown time and time again that he effectively communicates with all kinds of voters: independents, Democrats, and Republicans alike — just the kind of coalition we need to build to win in Iowa this year,” Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart said in a statement about Buttigieg’s upcoming keynote speech. Last month, Buttigieg held a town hall event in Cedar Rapids, setting off talk of a possible 2028 presidential run. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “His speech sounded like he was preparing for a second White House bid,” wrote the AP’s Thomas Beaumont, noting that Buttigieg criticized the current administration and said that Democrats need to make their agenda clear and to reach out to swing and moderate voters, a message has has been delivering regularly lately in media appearances. Buttigieg also endorsed Iowa state Rep. Josh Turek (D) for Iowa’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary. Turek won, raising both Buttigieg’s and the state’s importance in Democrats’ plans to reclaim the U.S. Congress and the presidency. During Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign, Buttigieg campaigned a lot in the state and won its Democratic presidential caucuses in 2020, back when Iowa still hosted the Democratic Party’s first-in-the-nation presidential nominating caucuses. The national Democratic Party rescinded that honor from Iowa after state Democrats used a defective smartphone app to tally the 2020 caucuses’ results, delaying them for days. Buttigieg has pretty much admitted that he plans on running for president. He has been touring the country, holding town hall events, speaking at local Democratic functions, and showing his support for candidates up for reelection this year. These appearances have notably included several early primary states, like New Hampshire. A poll from May showed that Buttigieg and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) are the Democratic frontrunners among Americans who were asked about voting in a 2028 presidential primary. An early poll of New Hampshire Democratic primary voters also showed Buttigieg coming out on top of other potential Democratic candidates — Buttigieg spent three days during February in the state, holding town hall events and campaigning with local Democrats. The website AllInForPete.com is run by a PAC not run by Buttigieg himself which says it has “the single goal of encouraging Pete Buttigieg to run for President of the United States by demonstrating the broad support he has in every corner of this great nation.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 32 Visualizações 0 Anterior -
APNEWS.COMAlabama asks US Supreme Court to allow Thursday’s blocked nitrogen gas executionAbraham Bonowitz, of the group Death Penalty Action, leads a demonstration outside the Capitol in Montgomery, Ala., on Monday, June 8, 2026, to oppose an upcoming execution in Alabama. (AP Photo/Kim Chandler)2026-06-11T04:05:46Z ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama is waging a last-minute legal fight to execute a man with nitrogen gas Thursday night, asking the U.S. Supreme Court to set aside a judge’s finding that the method violates the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.Jeffery Lee, 49, is scheduled to be executed at 6 p.m. However a federal judge ruled Tuesday that nitrogen executions are unconstitutional and blocked the state from using the method to put Lee to death. The state filed an appeal Thursday asking the Supreme Court to set aside the ruling and allow the execution. “If that ruling stands, it would be unprecedented in American history. Not only does it portend the first-ever permanent ban on a legislatively enacted method, but it would expand the concept of cruelty well beyond the bounds of the Eighth Amendment,” lawyers with the Alabama Attorney General’s Office wrote. The Supreme Court has never ruled that a state’s execution method violates the Constitution. Lee’s lawyers asked the high court to keep the execution on hold, saying in a response that Alabama is asking it to intervene at the eleventh hour “to allow an execution that has been found unconstitutional to proceed.” The case has put a spotlight on the nitrogen execution method and the sharp disagreements over its use. AP AUDIO: Alabama asks US Supreme Court to allow Thursday’s blocked nitrogen gas execution The state of Alabama is appealing a ruling on nitrogen gas execution. AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports. The execution method involves strapping a respirator to the person’s face and replacing breathable air with pure nitrogen gas, causing death from a lack of oxygen. Nitrogen has been used in eight executions in the United States — seven in Alabama and one in Louisiana. Lee was scheduled to be the ninth person put the death by nitrogen. Read More U.S. District Judge Emily Marks ruled Tuesday, after an appeals court reversed her initial finding that the method was constitutional, that Lee had shown by a “preponderance of the evidence that the protocol constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment.” The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 2-1 decision Wednesday night, rejected Alabama’s request to stay the ruling. The court earlier said the three minutes that it could take for an inmate to lose awareness is an “intolerable” time frame, “given the suffering that would likely take place under Alabama’s nitrogen hypoxia protocol.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. During the previous Alabama nitrogen executions, the inmates shook, pulled at the restraints and exhibited labored breathing. During the state’s last execution by nitrogen gas, 30 minutes elapsed between Anthony Boyd exhibiting signs of being impacted by the gas and state officials closing the curtain to the viewing room to signal the execution was complete. The state has maintained that the method is constitutional and causes no more suffering than other execution methods. A jury convicted Lee of two counts of capital murder for killing Jimmy Ellis and Elaine Thompson while robbing a pawnshop on Dec. 12, 1998. Prosecutors said Lee entered Jimmy’s Pawnshop with a sawed-off shotgun and shot Ellis, the owner of the store, and Thompson, a store employee. A jury voted 7-5 that Lee should receive a sentence of life imprisonment. However, a judge overrode that recommendation and sentenced Lee to death. Alabama in 2017 ended the practice of judicial override and no longer allows a judge to disregard a jury’s sentencing decision in death penalty cases.Bestselling author John Grisham called on Gov. Kay Ivey to honor the jury’s decision and commute Lee’s sentence to life without parole.“The practice of a judge overriding a jury was declared unconstitutional and so indefensible that Alabama itself abolished it in 2017,” Grisham said in a statement. “Jeffery Lee’s jury made its decision, the Alabama Legislature later agreed that juries, not judges, should decide life or death sentences.”Marks did not block the state from using its other authorized execution methods, lethal injection and the electric chair. However, it is unclear if the state could swiftly change the method.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 33 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRed Sox's Aroldis Chapman reportedly says if Yankees trade for him, GM Brian Cashman should apologize to LHP firstAroldis Chapman's disdain for how the New York Yankees handled his final season in the Bronx is well known at this point. This past October, three years after his last go-around with the Yankees came to a premature end after he was left off the playoff roster for missing a mandatory practice leading up to the team's 2022 ALDS, the flamethrowing reliever said he would "retire on the spot" before pitching for the franchise again. He uttered that remark, and others, while appearing on the "Swing Completo" podcast. That hypothetical has resurfaced this season now that Chapman's Boston Red Sox have the look of a trade-deadline seller. The left-handed hurler said that if the Yankees do in fact trade for him, they'll owe him something, ESPN's Enrique Rojas reported on Thursday."What happened, happened," Chapman said, per ESPN. "If something like this were to happen, I believe someone from this organization should apologize first."Chapman was then reportedly asked if that "someone" is Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. The 38-year-old Cuban southpaw answered, "Yes," according to ESPN. The contentious final chapter of Chapman's second stint with the Yankees is layered. Of course, his first stay in New York occurred in 2016 before he was dealt midseason to the Chicago Cubs, whom he helped win a World Series title later that season.Following that momentous championship in the Windy City, he signed a then-record reliever deal with the Yankees, inking a five-year, $86 million contract. That marked the beginning of Chapman's second, and significantly lengthier, run with the club. Over the next six seasons, he appeared in 284 games for New York, piling up 133 of his now-380 career saves, as well as 409 strikeouts. Amid that span, he earned All-Star nods in 2018, 2019 and 2021.In 2022, though, he struggled mightily. Early in the season, Chapman missed time due to to Achilles tendinitis. He wound up losing the closer job to Clay Holmes. Later, he landed on the injured list because of an infection on his left leg he got from a tattoo. The fallout of his missed practice, in particular, seems to have left a lasting stain on Chapman's relationship with the Yankees' front office. Chapman claims that, back then, he had the green light to skip the workout and go to Miami, but Cashman accused the pitcher of insubordination, as chronicled Thursday by ESPN.Since leaving New York, Chapman has acquired another World Series ring. He was part of the Texas Rangers squad that won it all in 2023. His time with the Rangers was sandwiched brief stints with Kansas City Royals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s given Father Time a run for his money in Boston, where Chapman’s excelled with the Red Sox. Last year, he made his eighth All-Star team. This season, he’s given up only one run in 19 2/3 innings of relief work.Right now, he’s on a one-year, $13.3 million deal that that includes a vesting option for 2027. "I'm in a position right now where I'm under contract, and I don't have any control over my contract," Chapman said, per ESPN. "I don't have any clauses or anything with any team, but [going to New York] would be something that, first of all, I would have to talk to the manager about. Sit down and talk and see what would happen."0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMLB expansion buzz grows in Raleigh as Canes make playoff push and captivate cityAs the Carolina Hurricanes draw national attention with their postseason run, momentum is building behind a push to bring Major League Baseball to Raleigh.Team owner Tom Dundon has made clear his interest in helping land a franchise in the capital city, as MLB explores potential expansion in the coming years."The Hurricanes' success here couldn't come at a better time," said Lou Pascucci, co-founder of MLB Raleigh, a grassroots group working to attract a team to the area.Pascucci said the excitement generated by the Hurricanes' run to the Stanley Cup Final reflects the strong sports culture in the region."If you live here, you're feeling this excitement. This is amazing," he said. The area's fervent embracing of the Hurricanes has shown that the Triangle is more than just a college-sports hotbed."One of the knocks the Triangle area has always gotten is that it's a college sports market. I think (support of the Canes) demonstrates at one level that when a team wins, when there is an ownership, when there is a venue experience that is at a certain level, when the team connects with the local culture, that there is an appetite for professional sports," said Dr. Michael Edwards, a Professor of Sport Management at NC State University.MLB Raleigh has focused on promoting not just the Triangle, but the broader state as a potential market."We're weaker if we build a fence around this. We're stronger if we can pitch Raleigh as an amazing market and then turn around and say, and you know what else you get -- you get the state of North Carolina. Eleven million people. The No. 1 largest state without Major League Baseball," said Pascucci.MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has said he would like to announce two expansion teams by 2029, potentially positioning Raleigh as a contender in the process. The surge in attention comes as the Hurricanes continue to generate strong television ratings and large crowds at watch parties, signaling growing demand for professional sports in the region."Turn on ESPN. Turn on ABC. All they can talk about is this market. How loud the fans are, they're talking about the tailgating. They're talking about the passion for hockey in a non-historic hockey market," said Pascucci.Edwards noted that financial backing in ownership is a strength for Raleigh's bid, but challenges remain."I think the biggest thing they're looking at right now is going to be the corporate market, which Raleigh certainly lacks in terms of comparison to some of the other cities that have been talked about," he said.An unknown in any bid at this juncture is the level of public funding that would be available to support a stadium."There's going to have to be some level of public financing in the stadium development. I say that because I think that's what Major League Baseball is going to want. You've got multiple owners that are also out there looking for public financing, and what they don't want is a situation where an owner comes in, even if that's the right thing to do, to build the stadium themselves because that puts them in a bad situation where now they've got to go back and ask for public financing," Edwards shared. As those details are ultimately worked through, the region's enthusiasm on a national stage has only validated Pascucci's beliefs."If I'm Major League Baseball, and I'm looking at this Canes run, and looking at this market, (I'm saying) OK, yeah - we need to be there," Pascucci said.Download the ABC11 News app0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘Ridiculous conceit’: Commercials during World Cup broadcast spark outrageJune 11, 2026; Mexico City, Mexico; Mexico players pose for a team group photo before the match. Mandatory Credit: Pawel Kopczynski-REUTERSThe 2026 World Cup in North America, with Mexico, Canada, and the United States playing host, started on Thursday with a fixture between Mexico and South America in Mexico City. The host nation went on to win 2-0, scoring a goal in each half. As exciting as the action on the pitch ended up being, with three red cards being issued, fans who were watching at home were incensed by one of Fox’s mistakes during its broadcast. For the first time, every World Cup fixture has mandatory hydration breaks in each half, regardless of weather. These breaks serve to make sure athletes are safely hydrated, but also, rather conveniently, allow broadcasters to feature commercials during the break.Unfortunately, during the second half of the Mexico-South Africa game, Fox missed some of the game action after commercials ran a bit long during the second-half hydration break.Growing pain of the first match or not, people were incensed with the gaffe.“All it took was literally the second hydration break for FOX to run too many commercials and miss some live action. Absolutely ridiculous conceit,” wrote The Athletic’s Tom Bogert on X.“Fox Sports was playing so many commercials during the hydration break that the game restarted before they were done. Enough, man. Stop this f*cking nonsense,” author and sports writer Zito Madu added. However, according to sports business writer Joe Pomliano, fans will have to hope broadcasters nail handling the hydration breaks, because they will be going anywhere.“It feels increasingly obvious that FIFA will keep hydration breaks for future World Cups regardless of the weather,” Pompliano wrote on X. “FIFA loves money and adding in commercial breaks is the easiest way to guarantee higher media rights fees. It’s that simple.”It feels increasingly obvious that FIFA will keep hydration breaks for future World Cups regardless of the weather.FIFA loves money and adding in commercial breaks is the easiest way to guarantee higher media rights fees. It’s that simple.— Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) June 11, 2026It seems like a fairly easy fix; hopefully, the producers for the World Cup’s broadcast partners don’t take too long to figure out how to properly time their commercial breaks for the rest of the event. The post ‘Ridiculous conceit’: Commercials during World Cup broadcast spark outrage appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMAnti-LGBTQ+ MAGA candidate jailed for threatening to harm Black teenagerJake Lang — a racist Republican candidate for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat who was jailed for allegedly assaulting Capitol Police officers during the January 6, 2021, riots — is in jail on a $1 million bond for allegedly “making terroristic threats” by threatening to harm a Black teenager. Police booked Lang into Dallas County jail after allegedly stating that if a North Texas jury did not find 19-year-old Black teen Karmelo Anthony guilty for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at an April 2, 2025 track meet, he “would take care of it himself,” The Dallas Morning News reported. A jury did indeed find Anthony guilty. Related GOP candidate struggles to burn rainbow flag on top of U-Haul truck while screaming at 2 people Earlier this month, Lang was arrested for criminal trespass attached to a “sparsely attended” “Protect White Americans” rally outside of the stadium where the stabbing occurred, Raw Story reported. Lang broke into the stadium and recorded a video showing a dark streak on the ground where he claimed that Metcalf had bled out after the stabbing. However, school officials noted that the stabbing and Metcalf’s subsequent death had occurred in other areas of the stadium. Last January, Lang threw a Nazi “Sieg Heil” salute during a racist and antisemitic rally that he held outside of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) headquarters in Washington, D.C. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today At the rally, Lang declared, “Congressmen and women that have been taking AIPAC money, we suggest you stop now before the crusaders really start…. Treasonous traitors will be hanging from the gallows, rightfully and justly prosecuted and hung for treason.” He also said, “White Christian men are not gonna sit around while [AIPAC and pro-Jewish activists] turn our children into a bunch of [n-word]-lovers.” Despite Lang’s racist display, last January, a Black transgender woman helped rescue him from an angry mob of 100 anti-racist counterprotestors in Minneapolis. In that incident, Lang had promised to lead a march through the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood (which has Minneapolis’ highest concentration of Somali-American residents) before burning a Quran on the steps of City Hall. But he reportedly didn’t get to do either because the counter-protestors — who outnumbered the 10 attendees at Lang’s event — cornered him outside City Hall before attacking him and chasing him away. The anti-racist counterprotestors threw objects and water balloons at Lang before a 30-year-old Black Minneapolis resident named Isaiah Blackwell helped Lang escape. Trump pardoned Lang after he had served four years in prison for attacking a U.S. Capitol police officer during the January 6, 2021, riots. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMQueer businesses are cleverly fighting Trump’s anti-immigrant raidsCommunity advocacy, protest, and mutual aid weren’t new concepts for queer businesses and their employees before Donald Trump unleashed Operation Metro Surge on Minnesota late last year. When the brutal immigration raids began, queer businesses were as ready as they could be for the chaos, financial hardship, and grief it brought to Minneapolis. Businesses like the Smitten Kitten, a queer sex shop in the Uptown neighborhood, became crucial parts of the community’s infrastructural support and resistance in response to the unprecedented immigration crackdown, Courier Minnesota reports. That support continues in various forms throughout the community, as federal immigration agents continue their anti-immigrant arrests citywide. Related Minneapolis’s anti-ICE movement is very queer. This lesbian pastor & activist says it’s no surprise. The community couldn’t wait for some imagined cavalry, says Anne Lehman, who runs the Smitten Kitten’s mutual aid effort, “because they’re not coming.” The sex shop isn’t far from where Renee Good was shot and killed on January 7, mere blocks from her home. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today “This stuff doesn’t exist in a vacuum to us, it affects our business and community,” Lehman says of the queer-owned and staffed store. Pedaling pleasure at the sex shop became secondary to the business of relief and resistance, Lehman says. “It was just like, ‘Oh s**t, Renee Good just got murdered. I don’t want to talk about lube right now. I want to go down to the vigil and the memorial and see what’s going on in our community,’” Lehman recalls. “I remember yelling at people: ‘If you have $300 to spend on a luxury sex toy, you have $300 to put towards people’s rent or their groceries or their medical bills,’” Lehman adds. The prodding worked. The Smitten Kitten became a major hub for donations towards groceries and essential household items for immigrants holed up at home during the crackdown. We don’t care about business in that aspect, because there’s people being f**king murdered in the street. That’s what matters.Anne Lehman, who runs the Smitten Kitten’s mutual aid effort The shop was so packed with donated supplies that “you couldn’t even reach the shelf,” Lehman says. They enlisted Wrecktangle Pizza, the pizzeria store next door, to handle the overflow. “Every 15 minutes, there was an SUV pulling up,” they recall. “Like ‘I just got a car full of stuff, where am I gonna put it?’” There was also cash: “We have people coming in to donate to rental assistance, being like, ‘I’m on the verge of getting evicted right now, but here’s 10 bucks.'” A few days after Good was killed, staffers witnessed someone get abducted by ICE in an unmarked vehicle right near the store. “Having these thugs drive around our city, pointing guns at people, literally assassinating people in the street. We don’t care about business in that aspect, because there’s people being f**king murdered in the street. That’s what matters,” Lehman says. They say the shop probably lost thousands of dollars with the shift in focus, but says, “That’s okay, because that’s part of the messy process. But we’re going to be recovering from that for a long time.” They’re quick to add that Smitten Kitten is just one part of “a huge group of the people that have ended up being the most giving and helpful.” The staff at a Knit and Bolt — a low-fi, queer-owned knitting store in northeast Minneapolis — are some of them, practicing “craftivism” with every knitted bear they drop into a bag of groceries destined for delivery to immigrants trapped at home during Metro Surge. Lehman says the queer “craftivists” are typical of the community response. They’re “usually the people that have the least, and have been through the most.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

(Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)Getty ImagesNBA legend Dwyane Wade gave his thoughts on the NBA Finals series between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs ahead of Wednesday’s nail-biting Game 4. Hours before the game tipped off at Madison Square Garden, Wade starred in a panel at the TriBeCa Film Festival and told Forbes SportsMoney “the unknown” is what he has enjoyed most about the Knicks-Spurs series. “I don’t think [any] of us expected the Knicks to go on to San Antonio and win two,” Wade shared. “And then turn around and San Antonio to win one [in New York]. The unexpected, the unknown.“That’s what we love about sports,” the 13-time All-Star added. “We don’t know the outcome. I love that these great athletes have put everything into this. Everything into their performance, into their individuality and also, everything into [their] team.” NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 10: OG Anunoby #8 of the New York Knicks celebrates after scoring the go-ahead basket against the San Antonio Spurs in the final seconds with Karl-Anthony Towns #32 and Jordan Clarkson #00 during the fourth quarter in Game Four of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 10, 2026 in New York City. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe series began with the Knicks overcoming a 14-point second-half deficit. Led by Jalen Brunson’s 30 points, 13 of which came in the fourth, New York capped off regulation with an 11-0 run to stun the young Spurs and win 105-95. Game 2 saw San Antonio open a 16-point gap, another one which the Knicks overcame thanks to stellar performances from Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. The contest came down to a crucial turnover from Victor Wembanyama, parlayed with free throws from Brunson, who ultimately won the game 105-104 for the Knicks. Trailing by two games, San Antonio made a statement and spoiled the party at Madison Square Garden for Game 3. A physical affair dimmed the first Finals game at the Garden since 1999. Led by Wembanyama’s 32 points and nine boards, the Spurs’ resilience allowed them to narrowly escape, 115-111, and avoid getting swept. “It’s game to game, possession to possession,” Wade said. “The Knicks have habits that’s been built over years, especially this season with this unit. Obviously, with coach [Mike] Brown and his staff coming in, you gotta leave it to the fans to look at the outcome.NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 08: Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs looks on during the fourth quarter against the New York Knicks in Game Three of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 08, 2026 in New York City. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)Getty Images“You guys’ job is to look at the steps that you need and the habits that you built,” the three-time NBA champion continued. “Make sure you continue to work those and continue to work the game. The Knicks have given themselves a chance to win every game, and if you do that for seven games, you could possibly walk away with four wins." “It’s not as complicated as it is for the fans, but inside you know who you are, you know what you can do. There’s gonna be a lot of ebb and flow, and they gotta stay the course.” Wednesday’s Game 4 was historic as the Knicks overcame the largest deficit in NBA Finals history, erasing a 29-point difference in the second half. The game was sealed by a crucial putback from OG Anunoby after a three-point miss from Brunson in the dying seconds. Despite questionable officiating and Towns getting in foul trouble early, the Knicks secured a 107-106 win behind Brunson and Anunoby scoring 36 and 33, respectively. The series shifts back to San Antonio for Game 5 on Saturday. This article was originally published on Forbes.com0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

I’m confident that Christine’s vision and style will set us on the right path as we build into our second season and strive toward our goal of bringing the Walter Cup home to Seattle.” Bumstead is taking the helm from former head coach Steve O’Rourke, who was fired after the inaugural season. The Torrent ended their 2025-26 season 8-1-5-16. While they didn’t qualify for the playoffs in their inaugural season, they set multiple U.S. women’s hockey attendance records during the season.“Season one in Seattle was special, and I am humbled and honored to continue building on it,” said Bumstead. “I believe Seattle is the best city in the world for women’s sports. Our fans showed up night in and night out, and it has been a privilege to be on the bench representing them. I am beyond grateful for the trust placed in me to help lead this organization. Thank you to Meghan and the players for believing in me and for pushing me to be a better coach every single day. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFantasy football: Target this sleeper from the Chargers in your draftsAfter limited opportunities and injury setbacks with the Ravens, running back Keaton Mitchell signed a two-year deal with the Chargers this offseason, perfectly positioned to be a sleeper in fantasy football leagues. The pairing of Mitchell's elite, game-breaking speed with new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is a match made in heaven. McDaniel has proven himself at maximizing players of his archetype, recently turning Dolphins RB De'Von Achane into a fantasy powerhouse.Mitchell boasts an eye-popping career average of 6.3 yards per carry and a historic 14.9% explosive-run rate over his first three NFL seasons. Now fully healthy and two and a half years removed from his 2023 ACL tear, he is primed to reach his peak in Los Angeles. While Omarion Hampton will lead the Bolts' backfield, Mitchell does not need immense volume to dictate a fantasy matchup, as he has what it takes to take one touch to the end zone. If he commands the clear change-of-pace role over Kimani Vidal, Mitchell provides standalone high-upside RB2 value if Hampton misses time. This article originally appeared on Chargers Wire: Target this sleeper from the Chargers in your fantasy football drafts0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM4-star WR Lawrence Britt commits to Missouri: ‘It really felt like home’Missouri landed one of its top receiver targets in Memphis (Tenn.) Lausanne Collegiate standout Lawrence Britt. The four-star wide receiver, ranked No. 248 in the Rivals Industry Ranking, chose Missouri over Arkansas, Florida and Iowa after a recruitment that featured national attention and numerous scholarship offers.Missouri’s push started early. The Tigers became Britt’s second offer back in 2024, and that relationship never stopped growing.“When they first offered, Coach Peeler told me he watched all 16 minutes of my film,” Britt told Rivals. “That was very impressive to me. He showed me right away that he was very interested in me, and that never changed.”Over time, Missouri established itself as one of the schools to beat.A trip to Columbia for the Kansas game helped change everything. That put the Tigers in contention. Britt has visited Columbia eight times and developed deep ties to both the program and the community.“It’s a very alive environment. Everybody is supportive. The fans are really invested in the football program and they pour into it.”Missouri remained a consistent presence throughout the process, but the official visit sealed the deal.“This official visit was very important. We wanted to make sure everything was right and it was the right fit. Being there, it really felt like home.“It came down to the people, the relationships and the development. Those are the main reasons I committed to Missouri. It is the best fit for me.”The staff played a big role in Britt’s commitmentWide receivers coach, Jacob Peeler is a big part of this decision. “Just being with the best receiver coach in the nation played a big role,” Britt said. “It’s an honor to join that room. He coaches hard, he develops his players and I know he will be a great coach for me.”Britt feels the same about head coach Eli Drinkwitz. “I think Coach Drink is going to be one of the best when it’s all said and done,” Britt said. “His mindset is all about football and building you as a person. He runs a great offense, players play hard for him and he has Missouri playing great football.”In the end, Missouri checked the boxes for Britt. “I have family there, I have been there a lot, and it is just like home,” he said. “The coaches were a big part of my decision. They wanted me, they recruited me hard and on that official visit, I knew it was home.”0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMock draft explores how Marlins might maximize lone early selectionMock draft explores how Marlins might maximize lone early selection originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Miami Marlins started the season on the right foot. They went 5-1 right out of the gate, but some fans would soon see some struggles that knocked them off their feet. They don't have much of a problem being successful at home, holding a 23-16 record, but on the road is a different story. They have gone 11-19 outside of Miami, which has been a real killer. So, while the team is looking to figure out its road woes, the front office is busy getting ready for the draft. They were awarded the No. 14 pick, which means they will have to have a few options in mind, just in case the player they want gets taken before Miami hits the clock. MORE: Marlins shake up the power rankings after an impressive weekMock draft explores how Marlins might maximize lone early selection The Marlins have really operated as a team that looks to take the best player available in the draft, no matter if they are a high school or college athlete. Last year, they went with two college players, but the year before, they went with a prep outfielder. So, it's up in the air with who the team is eyeing closely. However, The Athletic's Keith Law took a shot at predicting the first round selections, and in it, he sees the Marlins selecting Arkansas pitcher Hunter Dietz. "The Marlins went heavy on college players with strong underlying data or characteristics last year, and I expect them to do the same again, especially since they don't have an extra pick until after the second round. Dietz's stuff grades out extremely well, although he has a medical flag from two prior arm surgeries."Dietz is electric on the mound, but he does come with some concerns. He's had two arm surgeries, the first being in 2023 and the second being in 2024 after experiencing a setback from the first surgery. However, he did not miss any time this season and led the club with his 131 strikeouts and held a 7-4 record. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat could Chris Cenac Jr. bring to the Boston Celtics? The NBA Draft is fast approaching, and that means the Boston Celtics' front office is likely whittling down its list of potential draft targets. Right now, the two clear holes on the roster are at the point guard and center positions. Therefore, Stevens may view the draft as an opportunity to plug a gap with a cost-controlled contract that boasts long-term upside. The center position projects to be especially deep in this year's draft class. Sure, there won't be any standout big men talents when Boston is on the clock with the 27th pick, but there should certainly be some solid options capable of eating NBA minutes for stretches of next season.During a recent episode of the "How 'Bout Them Celtics" podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance took a closer look at Chris Cenac Jr. The 6-foot-11 big out of Houston is expected to sit within the Celtics draft range, and could be a solid third-string big heading into the new season. Cenac is a one-and-done collegiate prospect, which may weaken his stock with Stevens, who has preferred longer-tenured collegiate talents at times. During the podcast episode, Simone and LaFrance dove deep into Cenac's game, exploring what he could bring to the Celtics, how he would fit with the roster and what areas of his game would need immediate attention to fit within Joe Mazzulla's system. You can watch the full episode by clicking on the embedded video above.Watch or listen to the "Celtics Chronicle" podcast on:YouTube: https://bit.ly/3QnlPcSSpotify: https://bit.ly/40JRevfApple: https://apple.co/45sAUBGSubstack: https://bit.ly/3WoA0CfThis article originally appeared on Celtics Wire: What could Chris Cenac Jr. bring to the Celtics?0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMGiant inflatable of Elon Musk touts his role in producing child pornographyA giant inflatable bust depicting the shirtless tattooed likeness of transphobic, white supremacist near-trillionaire Elon Musk appeared in New York City’s Times Square on Thursday morning. Its appearance foreshadowed the Friday debut of Musk’s space exploration company, SpaceX, on the NASDAQ, the digital stock trading marketplace headquartered in the city. The inflatable showed Musk smiling with a heart tattoo that says “ketamine” on his left shoulder (a reference to his high-profile use of the drug), and the phrase, “SpaceX’s Grok makes AI child porn” printed on his upper abdomen and back. The barricades around the inflatable repeated the phrase and contained the hashtag #StopSpaceXChildNudes. Related Elon Musk says his daughter being trans fueled his decision to get involved in right-wing politics The inflatable refers to the fact that Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot continues to generate child pornography and nonconsensual sexually explicit images of real-life people, including children and teenagers. Elon Musk Inflatable at Times Square, NYC [OC] by u/Kr0pr0X in pics The district attorney of Bucks County, Pennsylvania recently said Grok helped a man create more than 30 images of AI-generated child porn last April. Three teen girls in California recently sued Musk for allegedly allowing a Grok user to nonconsensually alter their photos and videos to generate nude and sexualized images of them. Lawyers for the girls said the chatbot’s ability to sexually alter images and video was created to increase use of the chatbot and of Musk’s social network X as well.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid make Jose Mourinho return official after 13 yearsReal Madrid make Jose Mourinho return official after 13 yearsAfter weeks of speculation and uncertainty, Real Madrid have finally confirmed the identity of their new manager. The process had been delayed by the presidential election, but after Florentino Perez retained his position, it has now been concluded.During Perez’s election campaign, he confirmed that Jose Mourinho would take over as Real Madrid manager in the event that he won the vote against Enrique Riquelme. He did, which has left supporters waiting for official confirmation of The Special One’s return to the Bernabeu 13 years after his first spell from 2010-2013.It has taken a few days for the announcement to come. Benfica have already noted that Mourinho is leaving after an agreement was reached for his exit, and on Thursday, Real Madrid confirmed that the Portuguese would be their new manager on a three-year contract.“The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C. F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11 and chaired by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as coach of the first team for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029. José Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day that the preseason will begin.”Is Mourinho the one to turn Real Madrid’s fortunes around?Image via EFEThere is no doubt that Mourinho will need to be The Special One if he is to turn things around at Real Madrid, who are off the back of two seasons without a major trophy. Furthermore, there was increasing dressing room discontent at the end of predecessor Alvaro Arbeloa’s tenure, so he will also need to silve that problem – but if anyone can, it’s him.It will be very interesting to see how Mourinho gets on during his second spell as head coach of Real Madrid, but right now, there is undoubtedly a lot of excitement among the fanbase at his return to the Bernabeu.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMA.J. Brown Implementing Drop-Punishment System, Changing Patriots' CultureA.J. Brown Implementing Drop-Punishment System, Changing Patriots' Culture originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.If you're a New England Patriots fan and you're tired of the A.J. Brown content, I don't know what to tell you. The Patriots haven't landed a star of this caliber in decades. The team is fresh off a Super Bowl run and got exponentially better over the offseason as they gear up for another. If you're not excited about that, you're doing it wrong. Trading for Brown added so much more than a No. 1 wide receiver in Foxboro. Brown brought a winning pedigree. The Tennessee Titans went a combined 32-17 in three years with Brown, including a trip to the AFC Championship. They have not had a winning season since trading him.The Philadelphia Eagles were a much more impressive 50-18, with two Super Bowl appearances and one victory in his tenure. All he does is win. Patriots wide receiver coach Todd Downing says he is bringing that culture to the room. "His second practice, he had a drop on a 'go' ball. And after practice, he wanted to do push-ups for the drop in front of the group. Everybody chose to do it together. So creating and augmenting that culture of mutual accountability has been awesome," Downing said as quoted by ESPN's Mike Reiss. Head coach Mike Vrabel also said that, above all else, he is looking forward to having Brown's leadership."I think he has showed up with a great attitude, and I have enjoyed watching his interactions with the other players on the team. I think that is probably the thing that I'm most excited about right now," Vrabel said.More NFL: A.J. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMA.J. Brown Already Blown Away By Drake Maye's Leadership At 23A.J. Brown Already Blown Away By Drake Maye's Leadership At 23 originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Drake Maye and the New England Patriots are on the verge of putting together a very special season in Foxboro. The newest trade acquisition, A.J. Brown, has only been with the team for a week and a half, but he is already thoroughly impressed with the 23-year-old signal-caller."The talent speaks for itself. He can make any throw," Brown said of Maye. "But I think what’s more impressive to me is that he knows what he’s doing. To be that young and to understand the defense, and to understand every little check, the hots, the blitz, all those things, so young and so fast, it’s very impressive. And so, I really admire that."Brown went on to say that not only does Maye know what he's talking about, but he also is not afraid to lead the team."He knows what he’s talking about. He demands everybody else to know as well," Brown said. "And he’s a true leader. He’s a true leader of men, and it’s crazy to see at a young age."He’s a true leader of men."A.J. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup VAR corner rule explained as South Africa denied corner vs MexicoPhoto by Carl Recine/Getty ImagesMexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa delivered plenty of drama for an opening match at the World Cup.There were three red cards, an electric Estadio Azteca crowd and a refereeing display from Wilton Pereira Sampaio that made it clear he was not afraid to make bold decisions. But one of the main talking points came just before half-time.In the closing moments of the first half, Sampaio awarded Mexico a goal-kick when South Africa’s bench believed they should have had a corner. The staff were calling for VAR to review the decision, but the protocol does not allow for that kind of intervention. The VAR new corner rule only works in one directionPhoto by Hugo Rivera/Jam Media/Getty ImagesThe recent IFAB change regarding VAR and corners was not designed to review every corner decision. Its main purpose is to prevent a team from scoring off a corner that should not have been given in the first place. Therefore, if a referee awards a corner and replays show it should have been a goal-kick, VAR can step in.On the other hand, if a goal-kick is given when it should have been a corner, VAR cannot instruct the referee to restart play with a corner under the protocol used in this match. The thinking is understandable to a point. Football wants to avoid teams benefiting from an incorrect corner, especially if it leads to a goal from a restart that should not have existed. What is harder to justify is why the opposite situation does not get the same treatment. Being denied a corner can also take away a genuine attacking opportunity, even if it is not as direct as a goal scored from a wrongly awarded corner.South Africa’s frustration made sense. But in this case, Sampaio and the VAR team followed the rule as it stands.Read more:World Cup suspension rules as Mexico vs South Africa sees three red cardsFive things we learned from World Cup opening ceremonySouth Africa set 20-year World Cup record in defeat to Mexico0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 34 Visualizações 0 Anterior
