3 red cards mar opening World Cup match between Mexico and South Africa
The opening match of the World Cup delivered a rarity in international soccer: three players sent off with red cards. No World Cup match has had that many players ejected since a 2006 game between Portugal and the Netherlands, when four players received red cards — a World Cup record. The last World Cup in Qatar in 2022 had only four red cards in the entire tournament. On Thursday at the Azteca Stadium, Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off for South Africa while César Montes was shown a red card for the tournament co-host.It’s the first time three players have been sent off in the opening match of a World Cup – and all three were straight red cards, meaning none of the ejected players were given two yellows.Mexico won the match 2-0.Sithole was red-carded after taking down Mexico’s Brian Gutierrez on the edge of the box at the start of the second half. Things got worse for South Africa when Zwane was sent off following a video review for striking Roberto Alvarado in the face in the 84th minute. Finally, in stoppage time, Montes saw red for bringing down Khuliso Mudau. The red cards mean the three players will be suspended for at least one more match. South Africa’s next match is against the Czech Republic and Mexico next faces South Korea in Guadalajara. The match between Portugal and the Netherlands at the 2006 World Cup in Germany stands out with its four red cards – two for each team. That game in Nuremberg also had 16 yellow cards.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

School fires art professor after student complains about queer-related assignment
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) suspended tenured art therapy professor Savneet Talwar after a student complained about her assignment asking students to develop an ethical treatment plan for a hypothetical queer, Muslim woman living in the United States, The Guardian reported. The two-page assignment mentioned the hypothetical woman’s case study, her family history, relationships, and legal immigration status. The assignment mentioned that the woman “felt deeply affected by the violence against Palestinian civilians” and felt “critical of her home government’s limited response,” but it contained no additional references to Palestine or Palestinians, and no mention of Israel, the publication noted. Related She came out to a homophobic student. The school quickly forced her to resign. Soon after issuing the assignment, the school’s dean called Talwar to ask whether she had assigned work about Palestine. The school’s provost then called Talwar into an “urgent” meeting, and issued a message the following day stating that Talwar had been put on paid leave and was forbidden from talking to students or colleagues about the issue. A letter to the professor from the school official said that she had given “an academic assignment that focused solely on the issues of a Muslim woman with strong sympathies for the Palestinian cause.” A school official told Talwar that her assignment might constitute “discrimination, harassment and/or retaliation.” Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The Jewish-Israeli student who complained about the assignment had already issued multiple complaints about alleged antisemitism in the school’s art therapy department. Department faculty were subsequently forced to undergo anti-bias training to address the departmental “climate.” In a May 13 letter explaining the circumstances around Tawal’s suspension, school officials said that Talwar had previously mentioned the December 14, 2025 Bondi Beach terror attack in Australia without acknowledging the role of antisemitism in the attack. The letter also said that Tawal had once encouraged the Jewish-Israeli student to “consider” attending a lecture from a guest described as a “strong anti-Zionist activist.” Talwar denied that her assignment was antisemitic or discriminatory in any way. She said she plans to file a formal employment discrimination complaint against the school. Conor McGregor reportedly used 'powerful, banned drugs' to recover from gruesome 2021 broken leg
Conor McGregor will make his long-awaited return to MMA competition next month in Las Vegas against Max Holloway at UFC 329. During his time away, the former two-division UFC champion gained noticeable size throughout his recovery process and stint in the acting world as part of the movie "Roadhouse."It's been five years since McGregor, 37, last fought. In the trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier, he suffered a first-round TKO loss at UFC 264 in July 2021. It marked the Irishman's second straight defeat to his rival, but ultimately ended much more gruesomely than the previous. Stepping back toward the cage, McGregor broke his leg in the round's final seconds before the bell sounded and ended the fight.A New York Times investigation revealed Thursday that McGregor took "powerful, banned drugs," with the support of notable surgeon Neal ElAttrache. McGregor's use of performance-enhancing drugs led him to evade UFC's drug testing, which was conducted by the United States Anti-Doping Agency at the time, per the report. ElAttrache performed the surgery to repair McGregor's leg, but didn't directly aid in the PED use, as he sent McGregor to a bone-healing specialist to receive drugs that are universally banned but help with faster muscle building than the human body can naturally achieve. The UFC and USADA drug-testing partnership ended at the end of 2023 with McGregor notably absent from testing as the UFC aimed to book his return sooner than permitted under the testing rules. Under USADA testing, athletes were required to test negative twice six months prior to a fight.Late last year, McGregor was suspended by Combat Sports Anti-Doping for 18 months, retroactive to June 13, 2024 — the first of three dates on which he failed to complete a whereabouts check for drug testing within a 12-month window. The other dates were Sept. 19 and 20 of that same year. Per the suspension, McGregor was ineligible to compete until this past March.McGregor's upcoming return bout against fellow former champion Holloway will be a rematch of their 2013 clash. McGregor won the bout via unanimous decision before going on to recover from a torn ACL.

Fact that several rumored suitors haven't pursued him. …
Barry Jackson: In all seriousness, my cautious optimism is based on 1). Heat pursuing this relentlessly. 2). Giannis' interest in joining Miami and willingness to commit to extension. 3). Fact Bucks are intrigued by Miami's offer; as I reported Feb. 5, Heat was last team eliminated by Bucks before trade deadline and Miami's offer was seriously considered. Shams subsequently confirmed that. 4). Fact that several rumored suitors haven't pursued him. But I am NOT certain by any means, and certainly not betting the farm on this, because, as I've said, nobody on Earth (besides Bucks GM and owners) know if there's a mystery team or good Celtics offer. NC State IT specialist's Canes-themed office a 'labor of love'
A North Carolina State University IT specialist is showcasing his loyalty to the Carolina Hurricanes in a way you can't miss -- by turning his office into a tribute to the Canes.Dan Cass has gradually transformed his workspace with Hurricanes memorabilia. What started as a small display has grown into a full-room showcase of team pride."It's been a work in progress, a labor of love," said Cass. "Being a part of the experience with the fans, the energy the team puts out. I love the nail-biting anxiety of winning or losing hockey. Let's get the series!"Any time someone walks in, usually they joke, wondering what team I'm supporting, and if I'm a hockey fan.Cass said the collection began modestly, with a few pieces of Hurricanes gear on one wall. In time, it expanded to include a hockey stick mounted on another wall and rally towels from games he has attended hanging from the ceiling."Any time someone walks in, usually they joke, wondering what team I'm supporting, and if I'm a hockey fan. That's usually the biggest question, which is pretty obvious. They also like to say that I have a little bit of a man cave here," Cass said. His display continues to grow. Cass has already added new gear featuring the Hurricanes as they compete in the Stanley Cup Final. The office, filled with team colors and memorabilia, reflects a level of enthusiasm shared by many Hurricanes fans who proudly support their team wherever they go -- even at work.

World Cup kicks off in Mexico with Shakira, vibrant fans, and protests
[Reuters]The 2026 World Cup has begun in Mexico City with an opening ceremony filled with colour, culture and a performance by global music star Shakira.Thousands of fans arrived at the legendary Azteca stadium in Mexico City with a real sense of excitement and anticipation to watch the World Cup on their home turf for the first time in 40 years. It's been a complicated build-up, from the renovations of the airport and Azteca stadium, to protests and clashes around the event, and the cartel violence seen in Mexico only months ago.On Thursday, those issues appear to have been mostly pushed to the side as football takes centre stage in Mexico, and the country emerged victorious in its first game. The BBC saw at least one person being detained outside the match. It appeared, however, to be a number of smaller incidents as the anticipated possibility of a major demonstration was averted.Javier Pérez came with his family for the opener and told the BBC that the excitement now outweighs any hassles experienced up to this point. "We were lucky to get hospitality tickets and it's a unique experience. I have never been to a World Cup before so to bring my family is wonderful," he said. Jets want to break their infamous no-interception streak. Can David Bailey help them?
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — By the rules of football stats-keeping, David Bailey did not get a sack on the play.Texas Tech’s defensive end did not register a takeaway. The play-by-play in the game book does not credit Bailey with a quarterback hit.But in the third quarter of Texas Tech’s playoff game against Oregon, as Dante Moore dropped back on fourth-and-2, Bailey charged toward left tackle Isaiah World and closed quickly on Moore. The quarterback needed to get the ball out quickly before Bailey made him pay. So he threw up the middle of the field, toward his tight end. Texas Tech linebacker Ben Roberts jumped the route to secure the interception. The Red Raiders would lose the game, their offense shut out. But against an expected 2027 first-round quarterback in Moore, Bailey was once again flashing.“David Bailey about ripped him in half on that play,” Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood told Yahoo Sports by phone this week. “He knew it was coming and he had to get rid of the football and I think he got sped up. …“Even if he's not the one per se knocking the ball out or stripping it out of the quarterback’s hands or whatever, he's going to cause the football to be put in harm's way. And it's going to allow the guys around him to capitalize on it when it does.”No team needs that this season more than the New York Jets.Play 2026 Soccer Pick 'Em with FOX One and make your picks for the world's biggest soccer tournamentThe Jets selected Bailey with the second overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft amid needs at several premium positions including quarterback, pass rusher, receiver and secondary. Their most glaring — and, as players acknowledged this week, their most infamous — downfall in the 2025 NFL season was exiting the year without a single interception for their defense. No team had failed to secure an interception since the NFL began tracking the stat in 1933. And the last team to record fewer takeaways than the Jets’ four in 2025 was the 1934 St. Louis Gunners, per Pro Football Reference … who played just three games as an independent team due to league membership controversies. As with most football trends, context around injuries, luck and traded-away players (hello, All-Pros Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner) color the Jets’ story. But the zero nonetheless stands in the history books, a frustration motivating Jets decision-makers and players alike entering this season.New York Jets' David Bailey speaks at a news conference during rookie minicamp at the NFL football team's practice facility Friday, May 8, 2026, in Florham Park, N.J. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)ASSOCIATED PRESS“All the guys kind of taking that personally, because that’s now a part of our names, you know what I mean?” cornerback Brandon Stephens said Wednesday. “And so, how do we want to rewrite the story after that?”The Jets hope Bailey will contribute to the solution. While the Jets’ secondary has undergone a makeover, a pass rush glow-up that begins with Bailey will influence their takeaway trends.Bailey prefers to list off his teammates as reasons why improvements will come. But he’s willing to share in the responsibility.“Obviously if we're able to get a little bit of pressure on the quarterback, maybe it’s not always a sack, but if we can get him off his mark, we could help the coverage out and help them get interceptions,” Bailey told Yahoo Sports in a Wednesday interview. “It's going to be a team effort.”In one Tech season, Bailey led FBS in sacksPerhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that Bailey transitioned so quickly and so effectively in his lone year at Tech after three seasons at Stanford.Sure, Bailey was moving from a part-time role that transitioned him from an outside linebacker dropping in coverage on first and second down to an every-down defensive end rushing the passer. And sure, Bailey’s first-step quickness and well-tailored explosiveness drive his ability to out-leverage offensive tackles with speed from his 6-foot-3, 251-pound frame. (Bailey is essentially the same size as the 6-3, 250-pound Micah Parsons, another effective but undersized rusher compared to heftier edge players like the 6-4, 272-pound Myles Garrett). But also: Bailey has an unusually refined set of study habits for a 22-year-old in football or any industry. He’s already made his own Quizlet digital flashcards for his Jets responsibilities, a second layer of his learning process to complement his tendency to “bucket” or categorize plays in a defensive system as he learns them conceptually and creates connections.“I use play call as the term and then I’ll have my responsibility as the [definition],” Bailey said. “I’ll see it, and I’ll be like, ‘OK, what do I do?’ And then I’ll go through my responsibilities, flip the card and then see if I get it.”At Tech, he got it. The Red Raiders' staff wanted to pare down their edge rusher’s responsibilities to ensure he could play quickly and maximize his production. They weren’t concerned that he couldn’t drop into coverage, but they also couldn’t fathom why they’d sacrifice his quarterback-pressuring potential to drop him on any regular basis.Bailey dropped into coverage just once all season, on a third-down simulated pressure vs. Oregon, Wood said.As an every-down rusher, his 14.5 sacks led the FBS last year — and tied his combined three-year sack mark at Stanford. In all, Bailey finished his season with 52 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, three pass deflections, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. His pressure helped Texas Tech to the opposite luck of the Jets last year: The Red Raiders led all FBS teams with 32 takeaways. Can Bailey bring some of that trend with him to New Jersey?“You put pressure on the quarterback and we talk about tips and overthrows, we got to have them,” Jets defensive line coach Karl Dunbar told Yahoo Sports. “And if you can get the quarterback off his mark, you got a chance for some of them errant throws from quarterbacks.”Stephens said the secondary recognizes their role in helping the pass rush, too.“Everything works hand in hand,” he said. “If we don’t do our jobs in the back end, the d-line can’t eat, they can’t get their sacks, they can’t do what they get paid to do.”Transitioning to pro, Bailey knows which mistakes he can’t afford anymoreTakeaways were not the Jets’ only defensive weakness last season. The Jets’ 26 sacks ranked second-worst in the league as did their 30 quarterback knockdowns (consider the Super Bowl-winning Seahawks had 80). No team had fewer quarterback pressures (87) or quarterback hurries (31) than the Jets. The Jets ranked second-worst allowing 29.6 points per game and seventh-worst allowing 355.6 yards per game. After drafting Bailey second overall, the franchise wants him to suit up as an outside linebacker in its 3-4 base defense and a defensive end when the Jets move to four-man front packages.“It’s a little bit of a different role than I played at Tech,” Bailey said. “I’d say fairly similar to what I played at Stanford in terms of that SAM [strong-side linebacker] position. And then at Stanford, third down I was coming into that box playing a true end, basically what I’m playing during that nickel.”Expect Bailey to move from across the line of scrimmage and between rushes, blitzes and coverage. At Tech, he rushed from both the right and left edges. The Jets value that versatility, Dunbar referencing his Steelers days coaching Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt to move across the line. “That’ll make him a more potent player and the offense can’t just say, ‘Well, he’s always going to be here and you got to do this and do this,’” Dunbar said. “Pick your poison.”While Bailey’s continuing to hone his explosiveness, he and the Jets view his eye discipline as a key area for growth. The Jets’ defense will require him to think more than Tech’s did. NFL offenses tend to throw more gimmicks and disguises at defenders than those of college. Bailey said Jets veterans have offered tips on hand placement and step efficiency during the OTA portion of the NFL offseason that limits physicality and contact. Bailey’s twitch and athleticism are already standing out even as strength tests will come more when training camp brings pads. Then will come the need to hone in on block destruction and run-defense principles that Wood says were new to Bailey upon arrival at Tech but soon became more comfortable. Leverage and toughness at the point of attack improved over his season at Tech, Wood said. Integrating those with mental cues will be a 2026 challenge.“Obviously now I'm on the next level, people are a lot faster, more physical, smarter,” Bailey said. “So maybe some of the things that I got away with in college in terms of looking in the backfield or trying to process more than what I need to be processing, sometimes maybe I got away with that. But now I'm playing with professionals so obviously I can't be making those mistakes or taking those risks.”Flashcards should help. Stern coaches unafraid to press Bailey on growth areas could, too. “This is the time you want to work on some things that you might not feel comfortable with,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Wednesday. “So he’s working on some of his weaknesses but you do see the strong points of what he has and I don’t ever want him to lose sight of that …“Man, let’s make sure we use that speed rush that you have, but also understand that you can rush with power and you have a spin move that can be pretty deadly in [your] arsenal.” Before long, perhaps, the pressure will help the Jets to an interception.

New York keeps winning — and rioting
New York Knicks fans react during a watch party inside Central Park for Game 4 of the NBA Finals basketball series between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in New York. | Heather Khalifa, Associated Press Following a disappointing Monday night in New York, Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs looked primed to even the series on Wednesday, going up 29 late in the first half. But late-game heroics from OG Anunoby secured the largest NBA Finals comeback ever.“We always have a chance if we go out there and take it to another level,” Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns said. “Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you make your luck. We made our luck today.”Towns remarked teammate Anunoby’s tip-in was a “right hand from God.” New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns celebrates with guard Mikal Bridges (25) and enter Mitchell Robinson (23) after Game 4 of the NBA Finals basketball series against the San Antonio Spurs, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in New York. | Ross D. Franklin, Associated Press A win for the agesFor New Yorkers, it very well may be interpreted as divine intervention. The city’s arena, dubbed basketball’s mecca, has done very little to live up to the name, at least when it comes to performance on the court. The last time the Knicks reached a Finals was 1999, and the last time they took the trophy was 1973.In the final seconds on Wednesday, Knicks star Jalen Brunson missed a 3-point shot that was followed by a tip-in by Anunoby, a play that will be immortalized in Knicks lore. Players and fans celebrate after the New York Knicks' victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals basketball series, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in New York. | Frank Franklin II, Associated Press “That has to be the most iconic shot in the history of New York basketball,” New York coach Mike Brown said.If Brown’s team wins one more game, he might be right. Losing this game would have shifted momentum to San Antonio as the series heads back to the Lone Star State for Game 5.Instead, Brunson and company are positioned to win the series.Wembanyama hit walking into team hotel New York Knicks forward Og Anunoby (8) tries to shoot over San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) during the first half of Game 4 of the NBA Finals basketball series, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in New York. | Frank Franklin II, Associated Press The drama did not end on the court. Wembanyama has not endeared himself to New York during the series. When asked at the end of Game 3 if he takes being New York’s newest villain as a compliment, Wembanyama brought back sour memories for New York.“I guess, I’m nowhere near Trae Young level, though.”Young famously eliminated the Knicks in 2021 with a bow in the final game. Throughout the series, he antagonized Knicks fans, and in return, Knicks fans made colorful chants toward him. MIDDLEBURY — Northridge High School is looking for a new head baseball coach. The school issued a release on Thursday that Chad Gerard is stepping down from that position.Gerard informed the athletes and coaches of his decision Tuesday at the team’s postseason awards banquet. The search for a new head coach will begin immediately. The Raiders won the Northern Lakes Conference title in Gerard’s first year in 2021. This past season Northridge finished 12-15 and fell to Concord, 3-2, in eight innings in Class 4A sectional semifinal action.“We are appreciative of coach Gerard for his professionalism throughout his five years at Northridge,” said Northridge athletic director Ryan Bales.“There are several ups and downs with coaching, but through it all, he maintained of level of integrity while leading the program. Men's College World Series: Ole Miss leads Rocco's Jello Shot Challenge early in Omaha
The 2026 Men's College World Series is officially here. But it won't be the only heated competition in Omaha. The Rocco's Jello Shot Challenge is returning for its seventh year of pitting the wallets and livers of the MCWS fanbases against each other, with tens of thousands of Jell-O shots set to be sold in the coming week-and-a-half. The tradition goes back to 2019 and has escalated in recent years, with top SEC programs regularly leading the pack. This year's field consists of West Virginia, Troy, Ole Miss, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Alabama and Oklahoma, a field that figures to be competitive thanks to its litany of power programs.Rocco's Jello Shot Challenge leader on Day 1A day before the games begin on Friday, Ole Miss already holds a sizable lead with 1,437 shots sold. That’s nearly 1,000 more than second-place West Virginia at 490. Bringing up the rear: Oklahoma at five.Obviously, there is still plenty of competition to go.The Jell-O shots are sold at $5 a pop, with $1.50 of that going to food banks associated with the eight participating institutions, in addition to a local organization. The contest has gone from a fun little event at Rocco's Pizza and Cantina to a social media obsession, with multi-daily updates posted via dry-erase board. The event has a correlation with the actual baseball being played as well. The past five winners of the Jello Shot Challenge also won the Men's College World Series, including LSU last year with a two-game win over Coastal Carolina and 52,390 Jell-O shots sold. That correlation can be explained by A) the final teams having more time to add to their score and B) every champion being an SEC team, as that conference in particular has taken both competitions quite seriously.Past Rocco's Jello Shot Challenge winners2025: LSU, 52,390*2024: Tennessee, 38,799*2023: LSU, 68,888*2022: Ole Miss: 18,777*2021: Mississippi State, 2,965*2020: N/A (COVIID-19)2019: Arkansas, 864* denotes a team that won the Men's College World Series

Vikings to start training camp with the Murray-McCarthy turn-taking at QB before declaring a starter
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The challenge for Kyler Murray as a newcomer to the Minnesota Vikings learning a complex offense has an extra dimension. He has to take turns.Committed to staging a legitimate competition for their starting quarterback position, at least during this less-urgent part of the offseason, the Vikings have divided the time in drills with the first team between Murray and incumbent J.J. McCarthy. That's the way they'll start training camp next month, too.“You’ve got to put it together in a way that challenges those guys and see who responds, see who handles adversity well, and ultimately see who elevates the offense,” coach Kevin O'Connell said after the last practice of minicamp on Thursday. “It’s an open competition, and I want to see these guys in very unique and in many ways difficult circumstances elevate themselves and their games to help the Minnesota Vikings.”There's no deadline for the decision, O'Connell said, though for the Vikings to be at their best for the Sept. 13 regular-season opener against the Green Bay Packers they'll likely declare their starter at least a couple of weeks in advance of that. The frequency and quality of repetitions during open-to-the-public practices in training camp will undoubtedly stoke the embers of speculation that fuel the popularity of this sport, but the coaching staff has a plan for putting both quarterbacks in as many meaningful situations as they can once the pads come on in camp.“I wouldn’t read much into who gets what on which days,” O'Connell said, well aware of the intense scrutiny on this team's quarterback depth chart for a third straight year since McCarthy was drafted 10th overall in 2024. “I know me saying that was the waste of the time that it took to say it, but we’re going to put together a way where we can put them in the different aspects of situational football that they need to get.”Murray, the first overall pick in the 2019 draft who was cut by the Arizona Cardinals and signed with the Vikings for the veteran minimum salary for this year so he can try to cash in as a free agent for 2027, has been the presumptive favorite for the job even if he’s newer to the system.“Now having to split reps, me already being behind, not getting the amount of reps you would typically want a guy to get learning an offense, that’s probably the toughest part,” Murray said this week.Offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said McCarthy's offseason has “been a continuous upward arrow or him.” From O'Connell to wide receiver Justin Jefferson, all of the Vikings who've been publicly asked about McCarthy's progress from his mostly rough 2025 debut have remarked about sharpened skills and fundamentals. But at some point if Murray becomes the team's long-term choice, McCarthy might well find himself playing elsewhere.“I think I’ve made it very clear I wanted to be here, before I got here. I love this organization. I love the coaching staff. I absolutely love these players to death," McCarthy said. "This is where I want to be. I feel like I can thrive in this system.”The Vikings clearly still believe that to some degree, at least if patience were not part of the equation.“It’s probably going to end up being a difficult decision,” O'Connell said, “just based on where I know those guys are going to go.”___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

Was the 2025-26 NBA MVP Race Sneakily the Deepest Ever?
On May 17, Shams Charania broke the news that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had been voted as the 2025-2026 NBA MVP. While a majority of both fans and insiders saw this coming, not enough people are talking about just how strong a case each of the top six finishers had to win the award. Each individual seemed deserving of the NBA MVP, each in their own unique way.6. Jaylen BrownThe one-two punch of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown has slowly become one of the most iconic duos in the rich history of Boston sports. The two led the Celtics to an impressive six Eastern Conference Finals appearances, two trips to the Finals, and one NBA Title in 2024. So when Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in May of 2025, many expected a subpar upcoming season in TD Garden. Those people couldn’t have been more wrong. Thanks to Jaylen Brown’s season averages of 29 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, Boston was able to lock down the two seed in the East and win 56 games. Brown became just the eighth Celtic ever to eclipse 2,000 points in a regular season, and did it while being guarded by the opposing team’s best defender on a nightly basis. While his future in Boston is uncertain, the way he proved the doubters wrong and put the team on his back this season will forever be remembered.Jaylen Brown placed 6th in MVP voting, which might matter a lot when All-NBA teams are announced. pic.twitter.com/szT1lA2dq9— Celtics Lead (@CelticsLead) May 18, 20265. Cade CunninghamJust two seasons ago, Cunningham “led” the Pistons to a dreadful record of 14-68. Despite averaging 23 points and 7 assists, Cade was at the helm for the worst Detroit season and longest losing streak (28 games) ever. However, in one of the quickest and most impressive turnarounds in NBA history, Cade Cunningham averaged 24 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds in an MVP-caliber season that was topped off by securing the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Jumping from 14 wins to 60 in the span of two seasons is something out of a Disney movie, but thanks to the heroic play by Cunningham, it became reality for the Detroit faithful. As if the speedy rise from bottom-to-top wasn’t impressive enough, Cade Cunningham came back from a collapsed lung that he suffered in March in less than a month. The future is brighter than ever for Cade and the Detroit Pistons.4. Luka DoncicAveraging over 33 points per game in the NBA is something only five players have done in the past 25 years. Luka has now done it twice. In his first full season playing alongside LeBron James and Austin Reaves, who both averaged over 20 points per game, Doncic averaged 33.5 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists. Putting up these kinds of numbers on a team that went 43-21 when he played really makes one wonder how many more seasons he needs to do this until he brings home his first MVP. It is no secret that Luka is one of the best scorers and passers in NBA history, but outside of stats and a singular Finals appearance, he doesn’t have nearly enough to show for it. With Doncic going into his ninth season next year, along with potentially his last one with LeBron, there’s a strong chance his first MVP will be in his hands at this time next year. 3. Victor WembanyamaWembanyama is often compared to an Alien. While most think it is because of his unique play style and stature, it could also be because he continues to do things no NBA fan has ever seen before. At the young age of 22, Wemby led the Spurs to their first 60+ win season in a decade, averaged 25 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks (somehow his career low), and unanimously took home the DPOY, becoming the first player in NBA history to do so. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman also shot 35% from three and 83% from the stripe, showing that there are truly no flaws in his game. It is hard to watch Wembanyama’s dominance on both ends of the court, along with his veteran-esque leadership skills, and think he won’t end his career with a full trophy case.2. Nikola JokicIt feels like at the end of every season, Nikola Jokic breaks a new record. This season, he became the first player in NBA history to lead the league in both rebounds and assists. His 13 rebounds and 11 assists both stood far and away from second-place finishers in both categories. His slow, sluggish style of play continues to impress fans and make defenses look silly year after year. On top of the rebounds and assists, Jokic still managed to average 28 points on 57% shooting from the field. If it were not for Shai, Jokic would probably be a 5x MVP. To add on to that, Jokic also became the third player in NBA history to finish top two in MVP voting for 6 consecutive seasons. He joins a prestigious club that includes only Larry Bird and the late, great Bill Russel as members. Now a 3x MVP who has completely changed the game and made the triple-double just a statistical norm. It is hard to deny that Jokic has already cemented himself as one of the greatest players of all time.MVP HIM pic.twitter.com/1ENyqBVuhY— Nuggets Lead (@NuggetsLead) April 7, 2026The MVP: Shai Gilgeous-AlexanderWhile numerous players might be deserving of the award, only one can actually take the trophy home. For the second straight season, that player is SGA. When reviewing Shai’s season stats, the biggest thing that stood out was his unbelievable efficiency. As a 6’6” Point Guard, he shoots over 55% from the field. Once again, he is not a low block, post-playing center; he is a point guard shooting at that clip. On top of that, he averaged 31 points, 7 assists, and only 2 turnovers a game. Everything he does is consistent, clean, and productive. He doesn’t force bad shots or bad passes or gamble on steals, which is why his team locked down the best record in the NBA for the second straight season. There is a reason he stood out above the rest in this year’s MVP race and raked in 83 of the 100 first-place votes. Just like every other player on this list, it is safe to say that Shai isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.UNDENIABLE. INEVITABLE. MVP. pic.twitter.com/zOxbKSEAZ6— Thunder Lead (@ThunderLead) May 17, 2026The post Was the 2025-26 NBA MVP Race Sneakily the Deepest Ever? appeared first on The Lead.

Monica McNutt apologizes for assuming Taylor Swift wasn't a Knicks fan
New York Knicks game analyst Monica McNutt is on an apology tour after she questioned why superstar singer Taylor Swift was at Game 4 of the NBA Finals.Speaking with TMZ Sports, McNutt addressed the viral hot-mic moment and the wave of Swiftie backlash that followed June 11, saying that she was "wrong" about Swift not being a Knicks fan."Swifties, I appreciate your passion. I said what I said," McNutt said. "And here's the deal, if I'm wrong. I am wrong, apparently, because she's got an OG Amar'e Stoudemire jersey.""I misspoke. I did not know. But here's the deal, context, I literally just did a piece on celebrity row. I've been with this organization for five years. I know these folks. Ben Stiller. His wife, Christine (Taylor). Spike Lee. All of them. Fat Joe," she added.McNutt offered additional clarity, telling the outlet that she had not seen the "New Romantics" singer at a Knicks game this year, or last year."And we just saw her in Cleveland with her fiancé (Travis Kelce). Obviously, Travis supports the Cavs. She didn't have any Knicks paraphernalia, so I did not know of her Knicks loyalty. But shoutout, T-Swift. We can be united in orange and blue, like, it's fine."McNutt's backpedaling came less than 24 hours after she was caught dissing Swift to fellow Knicks colleague Tyler Murray shortly after spotting her: "She's not a Knicks fan. Get outta here, girl."Taylor Swift's support of Knicks predates appearanceUnbeknownst to some, including McNutt up until recently, Swift has been a Knicks fan for a while. In a 2014 interview with TIME, Swift opened up about her love of the Knicks shortly after she moved to New York City.Responding to a comment made by TIME correspondent Jack Dickey about how bad the Knicks were doing then, Swift made it clear that her love of the team didn't depend on how well they're playing."I love them, though," Swift said. "Why does that matter?" Swift told TIME that her interactions with Stoudemire and his then-wife Alexis at the Met Gala helped cement her love of the Knicks, noting that the couple were the "most normal people at that event, every single time.""I talk with them and hang with them every time I’m there. So I’ve always had this sort of love of the Knicks, just because Amar’e is so cool," Swift said. "And also I performed at the Knicks’—at Madison Square Garden’s—Kids Talent Competition at halftime when I was 12 or 13. And ever since then I’ve had this kind of sparkly, magical opinion of Madison Square Garden and the Knicks, since they let me sing when I was a little kid," Swift added. Swift, who donned a "Stevie Knicks" tee, was one of a dozen A-listers spotted rooting for the Knicks on June 10. She sat courtside with Haim sisters, Alana and Este, who were also wearing shirts with Knicks-related puns. Browns' Jared Verse career stats against Myles Garrett's first years
This story needs to be prefaced by saying that Jared Verse is not Myles Garrett, and the Browns on Monday are not a better team, right now, than they were on Sunday. However, the difference is not as big as people may think. The initial, emotional reaction throughout the league was that the Browns were "fleeced" in a deal for the best defensive player in football. Inherently speaking, there is simply no deal out there that would be an even agreement for one of the greatest defenders to ever play football. Now, with that said, getting Jared Verse in return is nothing to be overlooked. Verse is entering year three, and his stats in years one and two are quite similar, and in some cases better, than what Garrett had in his first two seasons. While Verse only has 12 sacks to his name, he has been a menace all over the field. He has 124 total tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and 44 quarterback hits. He has five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries to boot. Garrett, in his first two years, had 20.5 sacks, just 77 total tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 47 quarterback hits. Through two years, the two players are not all that different, and that is with Verse playing technically as a linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. When he gets to Cleveland, he will be an every-down edge rusher, just the same as Garrett was. From a stature perspective, Verse is actually a very similar body type. Both players stand at 6'4" while Garrett tips the scale at 270 pounds, and Verse is at 264 pounds.I'll reiterate and say that Verse is not Myles Garrett. Garrett is truly one of one, but if there was anyone who was close to him, it would be Jared Verse.Cleveland acquired him along with three top-100 draft picks to go along with it. It's hard not to look at this trade as a major positive for Cleveland. If not a "major" positive, certainly as good as they could have done if they were dealing with one of the best defensive players in the game. This article originally appeared on Browns Wire: Browns' Jared Verse career stats against Myles Garrett's first years

Sights and sounds from day 2 of Browns mandatory minicamp
A growing theme throughout the Cleveland Browns' offseason workouts and the first two days of mandatory minicamp is how good second-round pick Denzel Boston has looked. He isn't always getting the most accurate passes thrown his way, but he manages to make impressive grabs day after day and looks like a guy who can make a major impact if he keeps this up once the pads come on. For the first time since his Achilles injury in 2024, quarterback Deshaun Watson talked to the media; it wasn't a long interview, but he did speak. Shedeur Sanders also spoke on Wednesday as the two continue to battle for the starting quarterback job. Another bright spot is seeing Quinshon Judkins look healthy after a bad injury cut his rookie season short. If this offense wants to be successful in 2026, the run game led by Judkins will be crucial. Let's take a look at some of the sights and sounds from Wednesday's practice. Fitzgerald says MSU will be 'toughest' Spartans team ever, expects to contend for Big Ten titles
Michigan State football fans should get ready for the "toughest" team we've ever seen.New Spartans head coach Pat Fitzgerald was an honorary guest at the Detroit Tigers game on Thursday, which included throwing out the first pitch. Once the game began, he joined the Tigers' broadcast team in the booth to discuss the Spartans and his expectations for the upcoming season and beyond. When talking about this particularly season, Fitzgerald said he's excited about the offense Michigan State will possess."I hired Nick Sheridan to run our offense, was at Alabama and Alessio (Milivojevic) is going to be a heck of a quarterback for us," Fitzgerald said. "We have a lot of weapons. We are excited about the talent we have and I'm really excited about us continuing to come together here over June and July, and then training camp in August."Fitzgerald would later go on to say that the Spartans are going to be the "toughest" team Michigan State has ever had and has expectations of getting back to contending for Big Ten championships."I can expect them to see the toughest Michigan State football team that we've ever had," Fitzgerald said for fan expectations. "I expect us to be competitive and to win a Big Ten championship. We aren't going to back away from those two expectations."Fitzgerald has a full rebuild ahead of him, with the Spartans failing to finish above .500 in each of the last four seasons. Michigan State currently owns the longest bowl drought in the Big Ten at four seasons, and their win total over-under is set at only 3.5 for this upcoming season. But with that being said, it at least appears Michigan State has the right guy in position to bring the energy needed to get things back on track.Check out the full Fitzgerald interview during the Tigers' game below:"Fans can expect to see the toughest Michigan State football team that we've ever had." Browns' Shedeur Sanders reveals mindset during team's QB battle
The Cleveland Browns have once again found themselves in the middle of a quarterback battle during the 2026 NFL offseason. After adding just one quarterback to the room this offseason in 2026 sixth-round pick Taylen Green, the competition for the starting job has come down to veteran Deshaun Watson and second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders leading up to Week One.When asked about the current climate of the Browns’ quarterback battle on Wednesday, Sanders told reporters that he is “focused on developing as a player” and becoming comfortable in head coach Todd Monken’s offensive scheme."We come to practice every day focused on being the best players we can be individually and the best teammates we can be,” Sanders claimed. “You all [the media] look at it as a competition. That's not what I'm focused on. I'm focused on developing as a player and getting as comfortable as I can in the offense and the scheme."The Browns’ quarterback battleSanders, a former fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, will look to retain the starting quarterback role after earning the spot as a rookie. Despite being behind veteran Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, the former Colorado standout would eventually play in eight games for Cleveland in 2025, finishing with 1,400 passing yards, 10 interceptions, and seven touchdowns. However, Sanders’ quest to once again be named the starting quarterback hit a bump in the road this offseason with Watson's return. The former three-time Pro Bowler has fully recovered from his brutal Achilles tear during the 2024 season, which sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. And while Watson ahs underperformed for a majority of his time with the Browns, there’s a chance the veteran could land one more shot as a starting quarterback for the struggling franchise in 2026.Sanders’ mindset regarding the battle between him and Watson should not take away from the fact that there is genuine competition between the two quarterbacks this offseason. In addition to spliting up the first-team reps through minicamp, Monken told reporters earlier this week that he is not going to name the No. 1 quarterback anytime soon.“I really don’t know,” Monken stated. “I’m not going to name a No. 1 ... chances are, I will not... Now, once we get to the fall, we’ll have to dissect the reps how we see fit. I just don’t see it after the way Shedeur’s played and Deshaun’s played, they’ve both played well enough to earn the right to compete to start.”This article originally appeared on Browns Wire: Browns' Shedeur Sanders reveals mindset during team's QB battle

Detroit Edison baseball season ends in heartbreak in D-3 semi
EAST LANSING — Detroit Edison baseball coach Mark Brown had a succinct explanation after his Pioneers' season ended on a Kalamazoo Christian walk-off single in the MHSAA baseball Division 3 semifinals."That's baseball," Brown said after Edison fell, 6-5, at McLane Stadium on Thursday, June 11.Edison jumped ahead in the first inning. They then rallied to tie it in the later innings after Kalamazoo Christian surged ahead in the middle frames. The Pioneers took a one-run lead in the seventh on a clutch two-out single by senior Jerrell Crosson.Kalamazoo Christian, however, triumphed in the bottom of the inning. The Comets strung together a single, an RBI triple, an intentional walk, a hit-by-pitch and, finally, the winning single from junior Max Johnson to advance to Saturday's state championship.THE SCHEDULE: Michigan high school baseball playoffs state semifinals schedule, scoresEdison (23-9) lost in the margins of an incredibly tight and compelling semifinal. The Pioneers slightly outhit Kalamazoo Christian, 12-11, but had two runners thrown out at home plate and issued six walks, to just one from KC. The Comets delivered in the clutch, scoring four of their six runs with two outs in the third and fourth innings."That's how it goes," Brown said. "We had opportunities in the game, left a lot of guys on base. That's baseball. In the quarterfinal game, it went the other way. "And that's baseball. Sometimes it goes your way. Sometimes it doesn't."SOFTBALL: Kresbaugh sisters push Walled Lake Northern into finalEdison's third trip to the state semifinals in the last five seasons ended like the first two – on the losing end. The Pioneers have consistently knocked at the door of the D-3 final over the past half-decade, but have yet to be invited in."We have to learn from this to get better," Brown said. "Right now, we are just not good enough. No excuses, we are just not good enough right now. So, hopefully the young guys going through this learn and understand what it takes to finish."Edison enjoyed an early 2-0 lead thanks to runs in the first and third. But, starting pitcher Jamir Campbell was thrown out at home in the first inning, which stopped a potential crooked number. The same mistake popped up in Edison's final at-bat. With two outs and runners at second and third, Crosson hit a groundball that bounced once and soared 10 feet in the air over Kalamazoo Christian's third baseman. The runner from second, DaiJon Brooks, was thrown out at home after having to sidestep his third base coach while heading toward the plate."That was real big," Brown said. "We scored one run when we could have put up two or three."It exacerbated the impact of Kalamazoo Christian's bats. After two runners reached via walk, catcher Jace Rarick hit a towering drive off the left-center field wall, followed by an RBI double by Noah Zichterman to take the lead.In the seventh, it was two straight hits followed by two free passes to set up Johnson's walk-off single through the left side of the infield."Give credit to them," Brown said. They got a lot of two-out hits, and we did not. That's baseball."Though a strong senior class will now depart, Edison has plenty of returning players who now know what it takes to reach East Lansing. The question now becomes how to sustain and elevate. It is a tremendous level to sustain given that Edison does not have its own baseball field and practices on their turf football field on Mack Ave., but a hunger remains to go one step further."I don't know if you understand what we go through just to play baseball and to play at this level," Brown said. "It's just tremendous what these guys accomplished this year."Nominate a high school athlete for the Detroit Free Press boys and girls athlete of the week.Jared Ramsey covers high school sports for the Detroit Free Press. OG Anunoby's game-saving block on De'Aaron Fox deemed clean by NBA last two minute reports
Following the Knicks' incredible comeback in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, two questions emerged from New York's 107-106 win over the Spurs.First, what was Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox thinking going for a layup in the waning seconds with his team up one? (We will get to that later.) And second, was OG Anunoby's block a foul?On that second point, you'd think it was a blatant foul if you follow Spurs Twitter, Reddit and message boards. A subsection of Spurs fans are convinced Anunoby fouled Fox on the layup attempt. It wasn't called such during the game and it wound up costing San Antonio a chance to survive their 29-point collapse. Well, the NBA's last two minutes report on Game 4 came out Thursday evening and revealed that the call on the court was correct."Anunoby makes a legal attempt to block Fox's shot and dislodges the ball from his control before making incidental arm contact," the report read. All De’Aaron Fox had to do was run the clock out 😭He not welcome back in San Antonio lmao pic.twitter.com/Gqri2gTDIE— Hater Report (@HaterReport) June 11, 2026Now, on Fox's reason for the layup attempt. With the Spurs up one with 20 seconds to go, Jalen Brunson's shot attempt went too high off the glass and a footrace for the ball ensued. Fox used his impressive speed to track down the ball with about 11 seconds to go. Instead of holding the ball and letting the Knicks foul him to go to the free throw line, Fox went up for the dagger and was denied.“I just thought I’d be able to outrun him,” Fox told reporters after the game. “That’s it.”Anunoby's block kept the Knicks deficit at one point, and allowed the forward to tip-in a Brunson miss in the next possession to give New York the lead and, ultimately, the win.Fox was asked why he made the choice he did and the 28-year-old explained himself, and ultimately gave credit to Anunoby.“Try to get a layup, get up three and force them to need a three,” Fox said. “OG made a good block.”The play will now go down in NBA Finals/Spurs infamy, especially if San Antonio is unable to bounce back. They'll try to stave off elimination in Game 5 on Saturday and try to even up the series back at MSG on Tuesday.

Jaguars could cut ties with 109-game starter who could garner interest from Packers
Jaguars could cut ties with 109-game starter who could garner interest from Packers originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. One of the Jacksonville Jaguars' free agency splashes in 2024 was the addition of defensive tackle Arik Armstead.Armstead signed a three-year deal with the Jaguars during the 2024 offseason, and though his first year with the team didn't go very well, primarily due to a weird position change, the veteran had a bounce-back season in 2025, recording 5.5 sacks, 48 quarterback pressures, and 12 defensive stops.Though Armstead is coming off a solid 2025 campaign, there has been some talk about whether Jacksonville could release the 32-year-old this summer, and that discussion isn't going away.Armstead named cut candidate by Bleacher ReportBleacher Report's Alex Kay believes Armstead is a premier cut candidate ahead of training camp in late July, and cites Jacksonville's trade for defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro from the Atlanta Falcons earlier this offseason as a reason for the team to cut ties with Armstead."While Armstead was a quality contributor to the NFL's top rushing defense last year and recorded 5.5 sacks—his highest total since 2021—he's set to enter an age-33 season and could be due for a sharp regression. Jacksonville also traded for Ruke Orhorhoro this offseason and could slot him into Armstead's spot in the lineup," Kay wrote. The Jaguars are in a dire cap situation, and cutting Armstead could be a tough decision. Jacksonville would save nearly $14.5 million by moving on from Armstead, who has no guaranteed money left on his deal and will be a free agent next offseason.Additionally, trading for Orhohoro could be a sign that Jacksonville is already planning for life after Armstead. Orhohoro is under contract until 2028 on a much cheaper deal and is a developing player who has shown signs of brilliance so far in his career.Packers named possible landing spot for ArmsteadIf the Jaguars do end up cutting Armstead and roll with Orhohoro and DaVon Hamilton on the interior of their defensive line, the Oregon product would immediately hit the free-agent market as one of the top players available. As for where he could land in that scenario, Kay pinpoints the Green Bay Packers as a potential landing spot."The Green Bay Packers have been looking to get over the playoff hump after several fruitless trips and could benefit mightily from a grizzled veteran like Armstead joining their side. The Pack have a talented but young defensive line, one that could use a mentor and part-time rotational piece like Armstead to push them to the next level," Kay wrote. The Packers already have their interior defensive line starters solidified with Javon Hargrave and Devonte Wyatt. However, Armstead could slide in as a fantastic rotational piece on the interior who would provide some pass-rushing juice and stout run defense.Armstead also shouldn't be too expensive to sign if he enters free agency. His current contract with Jacksonville pays him $14.5 million a season with a $19.3 million cap hit in 2026. The 2015 first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers would go for much less than that on the open market.Overall, the Jaguars could look to keep Armstead on their roster this year, as he played a valuable role on their defense in 2025. However, if he gets cut, Green Bay should look to pick him up and add a savvy veteran to the defensive tackle room who can play valuable snaps alongside Hargrave and Wyatt.

Aguirre says Mexico beat cramps and stage fright in World Cup opener
Javier Aguirre said his Mexico players had to overcome severe nerves in the opening match of the World Cup (CARL DE SOUZA)Mexico coach Javier Aguirre revealed his team had overcome a bout of stage fright before clinching their first victory in a World Cup opener with a 2-0 defeat of South Africa on Thursday.Mexico had never won their opening game of World Cup in seven attempts, registering five defeats and two draws during their previous appearances at the tournament. But Aguirre’s side were always in control against a poor South African team at the Estadio Azteca and bagged three points that puts them firmly on course for the knockout rounds from Group A.Aguirre though revealed his team had had to set aside some opening day nerves to achieve the result."When you’re starting out the World Cup, of course your legs will shake," Aguirre said. "Never in 25 years had anyone had any cramps but three of them had cramps today."We were in awe when we saw the stadium and they got a little bit of stage fright. But we never suffered. We could have scored four and it would have been completely different.”The final minutes of Thursday’s game saw some sections of the restless home crowd boo the World Cup co-hosts.Aguirre said while he hadn't heard the catcalls, the crowd were entitled to vent."I didn't hear boos. But it could have been a 4-0 game. 2-0, is not so much. But we got three points, which is amazing," Aguirre said."If someone is booing, it's the Mexico players' obligation to make sure that doesn’t happen again. But it didn’t have an impact on us."Mexico now look ahead to games against South Korea and the Czech Republic -- but Aguirre snuffed out any suggestion that his team were targeting finishing first in their group."We're zero obsessed to win the group," he said. "Today we're just focused on Korea. It’s not relevant. It’s not our priority. Our priority is to focus on Korea, to keep going step by step and prepare for the future."South Africa coach Hugo Broos meanwhile had no complaint with the red card that saw Sphephelo Sithole dismissed after half-time, but took issue with the dismissal of substitute Themba Zwane late in the game."The first red card, I don't think we have to say something about it but the second red card I think the Mexican player blocked my player, the referee decides something else," he said. "So it is a pity that we have to finish this game with nine players."I think my team played a good game, some moments in the game Mexico even desperate, they didn't know how to find the spaces. But we must try and be better in the next game when we have the ball."rcw/gj

Brendan Sorsby's lawyer warns Big 12 to not circumvent court order
With plenty of noise coming from the Big 12 and Texas Tech regarding the conference's potential reaction to Monday's court order restoring the eligibility of quarterback Brendan Sorsby, Sorsby has gotten involved. His attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, has sent a letter to the Big 12 explaining the conference's obligation to honor the ruling of the court."Given some of the misleading reports in the media, it is important to emphasize that Mr. Sorsby brought breach of contract, declaratory judgment, breach of duty of good faith and fair dealing and breach of fiduciary duty claims against the NCAA based on the NCAA's failure to apply its own Bylaws, Reinstatement Guidelines and related rules and procedures when evaluating whether to reinstate Mr. Sorsby's eligibility," Kessler writes, via Amanda Christovich of Front Office Sports. "The Lubbock County District Court judge initially assigned to the case recused himself. A different judge, from Tarrant County-nearly 300 miles away—was assigned to the case. He reviewed the evidence presented by both Mr. Sorsby and the NCAA and concluded, among other things, that Mr. Sorsby 'has demonstrated a probable right to the relief he seeks on his claims.' . . . Mr. Sorsby did not, and does not, challenge the NCAA's gambling-related rules more generally."Kessler explains that the Big 12 is bound by the court order as an entity "in active concert or participation" with the NCAA. "Any attempt by the Big 12 to circumvent the Order — including by sanctioning Texas Tech . . . under Bylaw 3.6 of the Big 12's Bylaws, encouraging or facilitating its member schools to boycott Texas Tech football or Texas Tech athletics more broadly, or otherwise taking steps to prohibit Mr. Sorsby from 'practicing, playing, or otherwise participating on Texas Tech's football team for the 2026 football season' — would violate and be in contempt of the Order," Kessler explains.More from Kessler: "Any such action would also expose the Big 12 to liability for tortious interference with Mr. Sorsby's existing and prospective contractual relations, including name, image and likeness deals with Texas Tech and third parties. The Big 12 would be liable for all resulting damages." Kessler poses a broader question to the conference: "What does it say about the Big 12 if it decides to lawlessly violate a court order? What message does it send to its students if its response to a lawful court order is to be contemptuous of its terms? One would expect something more honorable from the Conference and its member schools."Despite the huffing and puffing from the Big 12, there's no easy workaround to the court order. Sorsby is eligible to play, and Texas Tech is entitled to play him. Any effort by the Big 12 to punish Texas Tech for Sorsby exercising his rights under the order restoring his eligibility violates the order. So tread lightly, Big 12. Turning your temper tantrum into action against Texas Tech will be expensive — and it will be wrong.

Maple Leafs turned down a Morgan Rielly, Nic Roy trade offer for Darnell Nurse from Oilers originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Edmonton Oilers have been trying to trade Darnell Nurse for a while, it appears.NHL insider David Pagnotta reported Thursday that the Toronto Maple Leafs tried to trade for Nurse before the trade deadline in March."The noise around him grew louder near the trade deadline when the Oilers offered him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a larger deal that is believed to have included Nic Roy and Morgan Rielly," Pagnotta wrote for The Fourth Period. "The Leafs rejected Edmonton’s attempts at least twice and subsequently moved Roy to Colorado."MORE: Dylan Larkin's trade request points out a major NHL flawNurse has now requested a trade.Pagnotta reports that the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins may be two of the teams that Nurse would waive his no-trade clause for, but it's not clear if that's the full list or if there are more destinations Nurse could want.Another report points to the Philadelphia Flyers. There's plenty of time for this to continue to develop."Nurse and the Oilers spoke after the season and it became clear, at that point, that a change of scenery was inevitable," Pagnotta writes. "Fast forward to early-June and another discussion between the two sides, which has led to a reported trade request, as pointed out by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman earlier today. According to Friedman and Mark Spector, the Nurse camp have given the Oilers a list of three-to-five teams he would waive his no-movement clause for. As per sources, TFP has learned the Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings are two teams he would be willing to sign off for, and the connections seem clear as to why."Nurse has joined Dylan Larkin as big names to request a trade. There might be more coming, too.More NHL news:Canadiens had a trade agreed to, but they missed by 1 minuteHenrik Sedin's son is excelling in a different sportElias Petersson trade plans may be missing a key pointWould the Maple Leafs trade Easton Cowan?Alex Ovechkin's mom is playing a role in his retirement decision

Alex Pereira makes daming revelation about Josh Hokit being cut from the UFC
The hostility between Alex Pereira and Josh Hokit refuses to die, allegedly forcing the UFC to take unprecedented measures to bury it.Made famous by many before him, with Colby Covington as one of the standout pioneers, Hokit has taken a professional wrestling approach to his early mixed martial arts career. Creating several larger-than-life characters that capture the spotlight and demand attention each time he has a mic in front of him has slingshot the 28-year-old into the limelight, but not everybody is a fan of his antics.Throughout his quick rise to fame, Josh Hokit has made some enemies. One who refuses to engage with Hokit's performances is former middleweight and light heavyweight kingpin Alex Pereira. The South American has remained stoic during his altercations with the California native, believing Hokit's disrespectful approach to the fight game has him on the UFC chopping block."I try not even to think about it or entertain anything about him because there is no reason for it," Pereira said. "But we cannot remove him out of the card on Sunday. He is already there, so he is going to fight.""But I have just heard some things that I don't even know if he will be part of this organization going forward. I mean, he is going to fight, but I don't know. I have heard some things here or there that I don't even maybe not even worth talking about because I don't even know if he is gonna be there."Freedom of speech has always been preached by Dana White, regardless of the beliefs and views of his fighters. But if controversial comments and damning behavior potentially damage the UFC product, how long will it take for those in charge to act? That is what Alex Pereira trusts is being discussed among the company's overseers, with Josh Hokit's future in the promotion a topic of some very uncomfortable conversations."There is a huge audience that watches this. There are children, there are families, there are people, and a lot of the things he does and says are just very disrespectful. So, I think, I don't know [what will happen with Hokit's UFC future]." https://youtube.com/shorts/IsXvLf0EAVI?si=1hSJNO4khZ8c5BAl

26 USMNT Moments, Past to Present: Building Toward 2026
26 USMNT Moments, Past to Present: Building Toward 2026This is 26 USMNT Moments: Past to Present, a U.S. Soccer content series that covers 26 defining moments in U.S. Men's National Team history. From inspired victories to stunning goals, and the stars and hidden heroes who made them possible, each chapter reminds us that our dreams on the pitch are worth chasing. Together, they’ve built toward the biggest moment yet: the 2026 World Cup on home soil.U.S. Soccer won the bid to host FIFA World Cup 2026, a significant moment in the trajectory of soccer in America. But on the pitch, the journey to the sport’s biggest tournament didn’t begin with triumph. It began with lessons. The first was the 2024 Copa América, the premier soccer tournament for South American nations. The longest-running international competition in the world usually consists of the 10 members of CONMEBOL, the South American governing body, plus two invited teams from other confederations. In 2024, the U.S. was not only invited to participate, it hosted the tournament for a second time after the wildly successful Copa América Centenario in 2016.Copa América on American soil was viewed as a warm-up for what was to come two years later. The USA was drawn into Group C along with Bolivia, Panama and Uruguay. The USMNT entered the tournament as the second favorites in the group, and many thought the U.S. had a very strong chance to advance to the knockout stage. And the team got off to a strong start with a 2-0 win over Bolivia at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Forward Christian Pulisic and striker Folarin Balogun scored in a match where the U.S. dominated with 18 shots compared to Bolivia’s six.But after that potent start, things quickly went south. After the opening win, the USMNT stumbled. The group lost 2-1 to Panama at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta after forward Tim Weah was issued a red card in the 18th minute. In the group stage finale, the U.S. fell short to South American heavyweight Uruguay 1-0 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. With two losses, the U.S. was eliminated. Despite expectations the Americans failed to advance out of the group stage.“To see the guys’ faces in the locker room and see the emotions of the staff and players, we’re bitterly disappointed with the result,” then-head coach Gregg Berhalter said after the loss to Uruguay. “We know that we’re capable of more, and in this tournament, we didn’t show it.”Berhalter, who was relieved of his duties following the Uruguay match, went on to call the response an “empty feeling.” Pulisic described frustration and a need for the team to re-find its identity. Fullback Antonee Robinson said the result was “truly disappointing.”Two years out from the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil, Copa América proved to be a wake-up call. It showed where the USMNT program was compared to other top teams around the world. Though the margins in that tournament were slim, the team had under performed in a major tournament on home soil. It led to a drastic change.U.S. Soccer made a monumental move and brought in a new head coach to manage the Men’s National Team on Sept. 10, 2024. Mauricio Pochettino had been a star at the club level, leading major clubs like Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and of course, Tottenham Hotspur.“I’m confident that we have secured not only the best coach but the best person and the best leader to take our program forward, a coach with a real mentality and a winning reputation, and a coach that matched our ambitions as we work and move forward toward 2026,” said then-sporting director Matt Crocker.Crocker explained the three criteria that U.S. Soccer used to locate its new head coach: 1) a coach with a history of winning, 2) a coach with experience developing both young and senior players, and 3) a coach that matched the Federation’s ambitions.“I am so happy,” Pochettino said in his introductory press conference. “I hope that we can enjoy a great journey. The objective is always to win, respect our values and try to evolve soccer in the USA. We are here to try to help and to enjoy a very nice journey together.”With a new head coach came a new identity. As a native of Argentina, Pochettino brought a fresh perspective into the fold. He preached passion and commitment. He deepened the roster and pushed the team hard at training.Pochettino made his managerial debut with the U.S. Men’s National Team on Oct. 12, 2024, just one month after being hired. His tenure started with a bang in Austin, Texas. Goals from Yunus Musah and Ricardo Pepi helped the U.S. to a 2-0 win over Panama, a side that played a role in the USMNT’s elimination in Copa América just months earlier. Not long after Pochettino’s hire, less than one year in fact, he would face his first major test with the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. The team was without several stars including Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah, Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun and Weston McKennie for various reasons. The situation opened up a chance for other players in the pool to step in and for Pochettino to flex his managerial muscles. Five players earned first-time callups and the roster averaged just 16 caps entering the tournament.“We are extremely excited to work with this group of players and compete for the championship,” Pochettino said when the 26-player roster was announced. “Of course, our priority is to win the tournament and to show the right mentality and approach, and we are confident these players will take advantage of the opportunity.”The team entered the tournament looking to rebound from a dip in form and four straight losses. The tournament offered the chance for a clean slate, for a group of young and bright American players to show something the summer before FIFA World Cup 2026.The tournament built new stars out of several lesser-known players in the program. Midfielder Malik Tillman scored a brace in the dominant 5-0 opening win over Trinidad and Tobago. Defender Chris Richards delivered the game-winner in the victory over Saudi Arabia. Goalkeeper Matt Freese played the hero in the penalty kick shootout against Costa Rica. The U.S. advanced from the group stage of the Gold Cup with flying colors and conceding only once. The U.S. continued to advance, culminating in a gritty run all the way to the Final where it would take on a storied rival. In front of a sold-out crowd of 70,925 at NRG Stadium in Houston, the U.S. fell short to ElTrî, 2-1. An early header from Richards put the U.S. ahead 1-0, but a more experienced Mexico side clawed its way back to secure back-to-back titles. The belief built during that Gold Cup run carried over into the side’s fall friendlies. The U.S. went unbeaten in five straight matches against World-Cup qualified opponents. It closed out the year with a resounding 5-1 win over Uruguay, the same opponent that provoked the disappointment and frustration a year-and-a-half prior. The U.S. Men’s National Team was on its way toward building confidence, cohesion and belief as the World Cup moment drew closer.“You can see the competitiveness today – or against Paraguay, Ecuador and Australia,” Pochettino said. “Of course, the World Cup is going to be different, but I think we need to prepare ourselves to be there and to really believe in our chance.”“We’ve always felt confident, but performances like tonight and our last match against Paraguay, it shows the direction we’re going and the way the team is growing,” echoed center back Mark McKenzie. “It’s a day-by-day, camp by camp thing, but ultimately we’re building something special.”It was clear with the way the team finished 2025 that confidence was growing. An identity was forming – one of passion, belief, commitment, bravery – all the characteristics that Pochettino desired for his team to emulate when he took the job. The players began to build their own legacy, a legacy we’ll see unfold in the coming weeks as FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off on home soil. But to reach this point – the exciting, current moment we’re living in now – it was important to learn those lessons. Each one was a step in an incredible journey that’s really only just begun.Sandy McAfee is the Digital Editor at U.S. Soccer and will be covering the U.S. Men’s National Team at FIFA World Cup 2026. With new five-year contract in hand, Sean Payton plans to keep going as long as he enjoys it
Three years after signing a five-year contract with the Broncos, coach Sean Payton has a new five-year deal. On Thursday, he was asked by reporters how much longer he plans to coach.“Well, five years," Payton said with a laugh. "I think most importantly, aligning with [G.M.] George [Paton] and the working relationship. We enjoy coming to work together and going through this together. I think we think a lot alike. But, no, you guys heard that story a year ago in Vegas, the week prior Bo [Nix] asked me, ‘How long?’ And I was like, ‘Shoot. Plenty of time. Eight years, nine years. Whatever.’ Then we had one of those gameday moments and I said, ‘Well right now it feels like one year.’"Fair question, but I haven’t really given any thought to the end game. I think I have a lot of juice left and enjoy what we’re doing. Someone asked the other day, ‘Do you enjoy it?’ I think when that stops is when you have to look at it. I’m not at that spot right now.”Payton, now 62, first became an NFL head coach in 2006. And he has a chance to become the first coach to win a Super Bowl with two different teams.Others in the league who currently have a chance to do that include Steelers coach Mike McCarthy and Giants coach John Harbaugh.

Mexico send Fifa a telling reminder of what the World Cup must never lose
If we are honest, as football fans, we needed this. We needed an end to the gouging and the politicking and the shambles, to the power games and the bad faith actions of those who run the show. What we needed was the show. Thankfully that show has now begun and with the arrival of football the conversations can change a little. Are Mexico contenders to win it all? No, not on this performance. And yet we can confidently say they will have the greatest home advantage of any team playing at this World Cup, not just because they have easily the most fervent support of the three co-hosts, but also the altitude and potentially the heat, which could benefit them against visitors to this beautifully chaotic, football-mad country. And as football finally takes centre-stage, a word for the stage itself. How magnificent is this glorious Estadio Azteca, blending the scale and steepling heights of the Bernabéu with the culture and traditional feel of the Maracaná. The way that top tier keeps rising into the sky, almost an exponential curve, creates a cauldron in which passion reverberates and the past echoes. One of football’s true cathedrals, history seeps from its creaking, though recently cleaned, pores: Carlos Alberto's galloping strike, Pele lifting the World Cup in 1970, the Hand of God, the goal of the century and Diego Maradona hoisting his own Jules Rimet all happened here. What a blessing. The top photos of the week by AP photojournalists (The Associated Press)In turn, what a crime to football that that final of this bloated tournament will take place at a soulless tin box in New Jersey rather than one of sport’s greatest and most historic arenas. What a neat summation of the cultural barbarism Fifa has inflicted upon the tournament in the name of commercial gain. The game, though. As discussed, Mexico didn’t send a message today but they did do what was necessary. It has become apparent in recent international breaks that Javier Aguirre would seek more control in games, hence his selection of Erik Lira in a holding role that had shades of an old-fashioned libero. Julian Quiñones may not be a household name around the world but he is Mexico’s best player, and he comes into the tournament positively brimming with confidence after finishing as top scorer in the Saudi Pro League. Given the talent there, that's not an achievement to simply ignore. Jimenez celebrates scoring Mexico's second against South Africa (Getty)It was he who had the first chance, which would have settled the nerves of a buzzing home crowd, only to go one better and successfully calm them in the ninth minute with the tournament’s opening goal. This wasn’t an iconic goal out of the Siphiwe Tshabalala drawer when these teams met in this same opening fixture in 2010. A heavy touch from Sphephelo Sithole gifted Mexico the goal from which they were always going to struggle to recover from, and when the South Africa midfielder got himself sent off minutes after the break, this game felt as good as over. A second from an emotional Raul Jimenez secured the win, and Mexico were able to throw into the fray a few of the young talents who may, one would hope, end up making this team of relative control and calm a bit more energetic and exciting. Mexico's Cesar Montes reacts after being shown a red card by referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio (Reuters)Gilberto Mora is chief among those. The youngest player at the tournament, and the only 17-year-old, he will be playing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs within the next year and is very much a player to watch. Armando Gonzalez replaced the veteran Jimenez up front as some would argue he should have done from the start. The Chivas youngster is another player destined for bigger things and likely Europe this summer. Pining for these younger, more electric talents is not to say that Mexico played badly, far from it. But with the desire for control came what, at times, felt like circulation of the ball that was far too slow. César Montes’ late red card gives them an opportunity to try someone else at centre-back, perhaps the ball-playing Luis Romo, while there are also more attacking options available at right-back. Mexican fans cheer in the stands during the Fifa World Cup 2026 opener (Getty)In the end though, Mexico did what was necessary. With the absurd format of this tournament they are already 94% likely to reach the knockout stages and the priority now must be winning the group in order to avoid a tough draw in the round of 32. Even winning the group and finding their way through a knockout game would likely set up a round-of-16 tie with England. What a night that would be at this historic arena. And as the lights go out on the first match of this World Cup and we are ushered towards the exits, you can’t help but feel that just as football deserves better than Fifa, this stadium, the Colossus of Santa Ursula, deserves better than for its final World Cup match this time around to be in the round of 16.It’s up to Aguirre to ensure the same is true for the Mexican team.

The last time the Browns had a QB competition this hilariously bad
The Cleveland Browns are set to host yet another quarterback battle. This time, it is between Deshaun Watson, coming off two torn achilles, and Shedeur Sanders, who threw 10 interceptions in just six starts a year ago. This is quite the sell to the fanbase, who now see this season as a segue to a new quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, in the likes of Arch Manning, Dante Moore, or others who could rise. This raises another question: when was the last time we saw a quarterback battle this bad in Cleveland? Because we have seen many bad quarterback battles in Berea over the years. There is still one that stands above it all, and one that makes this year's battle look like a stellar one. This Browns' QB battle has nothing on the 2017 showdownIn 2017, the Browns hosted a quarterback battle not between two quarterbacks, not between three quarterbacks, but between four quarterbacks. This year, the Browns carried over two young quarterbacks from the year before: third round pick in 2016 Cody Kessler, and undrafted free agent Kevin Hogan. They then made an NBA trade with the Houston Texans, acquiring Brock Osweiler in a salary dump move. The Browns took on Osweiler's contract in exchange for a second round pick from the Texans as well. The Browns then drafted rookie Deshone Kizer in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft to add him to the quarterback room as well. The rest is history. Kizer won the starting job, who then led the Browns to an 0-16 season and the No. 1 overall pick and to the selection of Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick the following year. This battle takes the cake. Justin Wrobleski Leaves Dodgers Game Early in Pain vs. Pirates
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski left Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth inning. Wrobleski, after giving up two home runs in the fifth inning, a solo shot and then a two-run blast, was down to the last out of the inning when he caught a ground ball to the thigh. The ball bounced off Wrobleski, and Freddie Freeman went after it, with the pitcher covering first base for the putout when the back of his leg got caught. The lefty could have gotten hurt at different points in that play, either when getting hit by the ball or when getting his legs tangled with the runner. May 10, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski (70) reacts against the Atlanta Braves at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesWrobleski was notably upset after being taken out, which could have been either frustration over his early exit and inability to finish his fifth frame or a reaction to a possible injury. Will Klein came in and allowed two hits and a walk, leading to the game going from a 5-0 lead at the start of the fifth inning to 5-4 by the end of it. How did Wrobleski’s start go?He struggled with his command more than usual, not hitting the zone as often as he usually does. This led to more action on the bases than normally expected from Wrobleski this year. His velocity was up on the day as well, a trend that has been a positive development for a pitcher of his potential. Jun 11, 2026; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Justin Wrobleski (70) delivers a pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the first inning at PNC Park. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn ImagesHe gave up six hits on the night and two total walks, getting just one strikeout. It was a poor outing given his standard this year. He hung two sliders that were punished for home runs, and the baserunner that he left upon his exit ended up scoring when Klein entered the game. Wrobleski has plenty to be frustrated about, given how he has raised the bar for his performance baseline this year. This story will be updated as more information becomes available about Wrobleski’s status.

Grant Wahl’s loss is still being felt given his remarkable dedication into his craft. Grant’s work as a soccer journalist contributed immensely to the growth of the sport in the United States, and is a big reason for all the excitement this summer, and we miss him dearly,” Lowe said as pictures of Wahl flashed on the screen.Wahl was among the most consequential journalists covering the sport of soccer for an American audience at the time of his passing. In the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup, Wahl broke numerous stories about the human rights abuses taking place in Qatar. But he was an equally impactful reporter when it came to on-field matters, serving as a leading voice covering the U.S. Men’s National Team for many years across several outlets including Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, and Fox.Following his death in 2022, Fox led its World Cup coverage by sharing the news with viewers. The post Fox honors Grant Wahl during first day of World Cup coverage appeared first on Awful Announcing.

Pochettino preaches relaxation as USMNT’s World Cup debut looms
Mauricio Pochettino will make his World Cup debut as a coach on Friday. Photograph: Stu Forster/Getty ImagesMauricio Pochettino declared on Thursday that, after months of assessing his player pool and testing different formations and approaches, it’s time to trust that his staff have set up the team for the best tournament possible.“I was talking with a good friend that won the World Cup in 1986 with Argentina,” said Pochettino, who confirmed that all 26 US players are available for selection. “He said to me, ‘in relaxation, you become concentrated and focused.’ I think we try to be very professional in every single aspect of our preparation by creating a very good atmosphere where the player can feel comfortable and to embrace and, not to learn, but to understand what we expect”Related: Mauricio Pochettino: ‘No one sees the USA as a contender – but why not?’There have been tough lessons along the way, from the shock fourth-place finish at the 2025 Concacaf Nations League to March’s friendly defeats to Belgium and Portugal by a 7-2 aggregate. Even after the Belgian goal glut, Pochettino preached the importance of him presenting a confident demeanor so that his players would use it to guide their own thinking.Seemingly, that mentality has stuck. Throughout the past two weeks, the team has spoken with, if not swagger, then quiet confidence that they’re ready to represent their nation in front of the home faithful.“It’s special,” Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams said on Thursday, “and I think these are kind of the moments [where] you really need to stay present within it all, because no matter the circumstances, and no matter what happens, you’re going through it with your best friends. I think that connection, and that chemistry, and that bond is what has allowed us to grow over the past four years, especially since Qatar.”As the 2022 World Cup played out, Alex Freeman was a 17-year-old who hadn’t yet debuted for Orlando City. Matt Freese was ready to change clubs after years backing up Jamaica’s Andre Blake for the Philadelphia Union. Sebastian Berhalter had only just finished his first season with the Vancouver Whitecaps, where he had yet to lock down a spot as a starter. They, along with ten others, are now poised to make their World Cup debuts close to home.“Since Qatar, obviously the roster has changed,” Adams said. You get more fresh faces in, [and it] adds a little bit of a different energy and vibe. But the connection hasn’t wavered, and I think that’s the most important thing.”That cohesion had a viral moment on Wednesday night, as US Soccer posted video reaction of the players watching the New York Knicks’ record comeback over the San Antonio Spurs. Adams is one of a few lifelong Knicks fans among the bunch, while others (like Weston McKennie and Ricardo Pepi) hail from Texas. Others are just anti-Knicks; Adams named Haji Wright, a diehard Los Angeles Lakers fan, and Brenden Aaronson among this group.Related: The United States enter a charged World Cup asking: what is enough? “He’s a Sixers fan, he can’t say anything,” Adams quipped.Just as Philadelphia tried to “trust the process” all the way to a title, the US are making similar bets on the steps they’ve taken to earn a place on this squad. As a result, and perhaps supported by the sage wisdom of his World Cup champion pal, Pochettino doesn’t feel that he needs a Hollywood-caliber pep talk to send his group out in Los Angeles.“I think now they don’t need an external motivation or inspirational speech,” Pochettino said. “If you know the mindset of the player, they need before [the game is close] to get [to] their best. They need motivation and speech and inspiration when they go to train and improve in every single area. Tomorrow is late.”Following Mexico’s 2-0 win in Group A, the US will want to play with similar quality and confidence from the opening whistle. On Wednesday, Chris Richards set aims to be “the top dog” in Group D. On Thursday, Adams cracked a wry smile as he said he was “definitely not thinking about third place, that’s for sure.”Pochettino said he has already determined his starters for the Paraguay clash, though he said he’s keeping it to himself to keep outsiders from finding out. (“If I tell you they know, you are going to start to call them,” he said with a laugh.) All that’s left now is to play the games.“The most important [thing] is not to be disconnected with your emotional relationship with the game,” Pochettino said. “We were talking about that. They need to think tomorrow and play like they are a child – with no pressure, with no responsibility. It’s to play, doing what they need to do and what they know to do.”
