AP Was There: 1975 summit at French castle plants seed for future G7 club of wealthy nations

(AP Photo, File)2026-06-13T07:02:09Z EDITOR’S NOTE: When U.S. President Gerald Ford and leaders of five other leading democracies gathered for talks at a castle outside Paris on Nov. 15, 1975, they planted the seed for what subsequently became the Group of Seven nations. The initial six industrial powers that huddled at the Château de Rambouillet for three days of brainstorming about fixes for the global economy became the G7 the following year when Canada joined the elite club.During and after the Cold War, the G7 became a powerful tool of influence, enabling Western allies and Japan to hammer out common positions not only on economic issues but also their foreign policy and security priorities. The combined economic, industrial, military, and diplomatic strength of G7 nations ensures the summits they hold annually, rotating hosting duties, are always major news events. The next G7 summit is in France next week. As part of its coverage, The Associated Press is republishing extracts of the story that AP correspondent Arthur L. Gavshon wrote on the first day of the inaugural summit in 1975, hosted by French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and also including the leaders of West Germany, the U.K., Italy and Japan, as well as Ford. ___By ARTHUR L. GAVSHONRAMBOUILLET (AP) — President Ford called on leaders of five other major industrial nations Saturday to set themselves the task of transforming the world’s economic slump into prosperity by 1977. Read More Addressing the opening session of an economic summit meeting amid the splendor of the 14th-century Chateau de Rambouillet, Ford “categorically rejected the view” that expansion in the industrial world is impossible at pre-recession rates, an aide told newsmen. He added that Ford said America’s economic recovery has been stronger than anticipated and forecast a growth rate of between 6 and 7 percent through 1976.The first meeting with leaders of France, Britain, West Germany, Japan, and Italy began shortly after the President arrived at the historic chateau, 30 miles south of Paris. The free-flowing talks broke nearly three hours later for dinner, and the host, French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, told newsmen: “I am optimistic. I think we can arrive at something concrete.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. A French spokesman said the leaders were reaching “a remarkable convergence of views.” British officials indicated a consensus was emerging that the worst of the economic downturn might already be over.Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger struck the same positive note, saying the meeting “went very well.”The dinner was remarkably simple in comparison with the usual fare for a state occasion in France and was in line with the low-key approach favored by the French.Stuffed chicken was the main course, with wines that were good but not spectacular. In other developments at the six-nation talks:— Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki who reported his country has been hurt by a decline in world trade, began pressing immediately for a freer flow of international commerce.— British Prime Minister Harold Wilson disclosed through aides he wants his fellow leaders to back up a plan for a new and strengthened world code to check the spread of nuclear know-how, equipment, and weapons. — Ford will join Giscard d’Estaing and Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro Sunday morning for services at the Roman Catholic church in Poigny la Forêt, a 10-minute drive from the chateau. The setting was priceless furniture and statuary trucked from the Louvre for the occasion, but the mood at the start of the summit was that of a relayed businessmen’s weekend seminar.“It’s just a beautiful place here,” said Ford as President Valery Giscard d’Estaing of France led the participants from six nations into the pink and gray hall of marble at the chateau where Louis XVI passed idle hours and Napoleon his last night in France before banishment to St. Helena.“The facilities are really gorgeous,” Ford said to Giscard d’Estaing. “It’s very comfortable.”“I hope you feel as positive about all this afterwards,” Giscard d’Estaing shot back with a laugh. Then he called out “Helmut, oh Helmut,” as West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt entered the room. The relayed mood also was apparent in the dress of the leaders. Giscard d’Estaing wore a greenish tweed weekend suit, and Schmidt had on a light gray one. Ford was the most formally dressed of the leaders in a dark blue suit with a vest and white shirt. The group, 18 in all including the finance and foreign ministers of participating nations, was spread out nine on each side of a 30‑foot long table. Giscard d’Estaing and Ford faced each other across the chestnut-colored upholstery covering the table, as did Harold Wilson of Britain and Aldo Moro of Italy, and Takeo Miki of Japan and Schmidt. Each of the participants had earphones on which to follow proceedings. There were five closed-in interpreters’ booths at one end of the smallish room, and a bust of King Francois I of France, who died at the chateau, at the other end. The leaders do not expect to reach firm decisions at the three-day seminar but to define directions their individual governments can take in fighting inflation, unemployment and declining world trade.Presidential press spokesman Ron Nessen said during Ford’s flight across the Atlantic that the summit may result in an improved performance in the American economy.“The President has always thought of it in practical terms – what it means to the American consumer,” Nessen said. Each of the visiting leaders was assigned an apartment in the chateau, home of French kings and rulers from the 14th century. Moving men had worked until the early hours Saturday uncrating furniture and paintings brought from the Louvre to spruce up the rooms.More than 3,000 armed French police were deployed around the wooded grounds and gardens of the palace.Ford was given the top room of the Francois I tower, which a French spokesman described as “the most comfortable apartment in the chateau.” It has a Spanish-made bed with a working fireplace at the foot and a direct telephone linking Ford to the White House.Prime Minister Harold Wilson of Britain was given an apartment done in mahogany and satin overlooking the garden ponds; Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki was down the hall in an apartment with heavy beams and Louis XVI furniture; Chancellor Helmut Schmidt of West Germany was in an apartment furnished in Directoire style, and Premier Aldo Moro of Italy had rooms furnished in Empire style. With the idea of achieving general economic growth – and a cutback of the 15 million jobless in Western countries – the six nations intend to try to align their policies on such big issues as:— The old French-American dispute over reform of the world monetary system. The French dislike the present floating exchange rates and want to return to a more rigid system while the United States and Britain would as soon leave the system flexible.— The formulation of a common energy policy. Ford can count on majority backing for his view that the economic and political future of the industrial democracies cannot be left to the mercy of the oil producers. New sources of supply and new conservation programs should be jointly and quickly developed.— The general world economic outlook and ways of tackling the inflation which is undermining political stability many places.— Relationships between the older industrialized nations of the West, the newly rich producers of oil and other scarce raw materials, and the poorest developing lands.

Arsenal step up efforts to sign Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi
Arsenal step up efforts to sign Lille’s Ayyoub BouaddiArsenal are stepping up their efforts to sign Lille OSC midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi (18), according to a report from Sacha Tavolieri. Arsenal have a long-standing interest in Bouaddi, who, despite playing for France at youth level, recently committed to the Morocco national team and is set to compete with the Atlas Lions in the FIFA World Cup. However, the Gunners are now stepping up their efforts and are in frequent contact with the midfielder’s entourage in order to steal a march on the competition, which notably comes in the form of Paris Saint-Germain. The Premier League champions have indicated to the player’s entourage that he would immediately have an important role in the side. In recent talks between the parties, it was indicated that, on Bouaddi’s part, there was an interest in making the move to the Emirates Stadium. Further talks are planned for after the World Cup.Lille’s asking price is set at €70m. Arsenal have a strong relationship with LOSC’s president, Olivier Létang, whilst the French club may prefer to sell to the English club, rather than a domestic rival. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Former Gunner with sell-on clause scores World Cup brace
Former Gunner with sell-on clause scores World Cup braceFormer Gunner Folarin Balogun starred in the USA’s opening-game World Cup win over Paraguay on Friday night, keeping up his excellent form in 2026 so far.Photo by Harry How/Getty ImagesFormer Arsenal academy striker Folarin Balogun made a start in the USA’s first game of the 2026 World Cup on Friday night, with the tournament hosts playing against Paraguay.Paraguay got an early warning of the dangers Balogun posed when he had a goal disallowed for offside in the 28th minute, but it wasn’t a warning they heeded.Three minutes later, Balogun pounced on a low deflected cross for fire home a first-time finish for 2-0, before curling home another finish later in the half for his second goal and 3-0. The USA ended up winning the match 4-1.Arsenal sold Balogun to AS Monaco for around £35m in August 2023, with approximately £26m guaranteed and the rest in potential add-ons.The striker had a somewhat underwhelming first campaign, only scoring eight goals in 2023/24, and an injury-hit season in 2024/25 halved that tally to just four goals. But after a stop-start beginning to 2025/26, Balogun finally began to find his stride in the second half of the campaign.Since the start of 2026, Balogun has scored 12 goals and assisted three in 24 matches for Monaco, as well as now scoring three in five games for the USA. At one point, the striker went on an eight-game scoring streak in Ligue 1.Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty ImagesIt was generally a disappointing season for Monaco, who only scraped into the Europa Conference League qualifiers with their seventh-place finish, despite being in the Champions League race in April. They were ultimately lucky not to miss out on Europe entirely. The team will also be disappointed to have taken a 2-0 first-leg lead in their Champions League tie against PSG, with Balogun scoring both goals, only to go on to lose both the game and the tie.If Balogun continues to impress at the World Cup, perhaps there might be some interested buyers. Arsenal will be keeping an eye on things, due to their 17.5% sell-on clause in the player’s contract.Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images

The ‘Soccer Capital of America’ hosting England’s bid for World Cup glory
There is every chance this year’s World Cup winners will be celebrating their triumph from Kansas City, with contenders England and reigning champions Argentina both based there for the summer’s football spectacular. The city, which calls itself the “Soccer Capital of America”, is also playing host to the Netherlands and dark horses Algeria, with all four teams based in and around the Midwest metropolis for the 48-team tournament.Kansas City was only awarded host-city status when it stepped in following Chicago’s withdrawal but it is big on the football scene, having invested almost $700million (£522m) in infrastructure, with MLS side Sporting Kansas City and NWSL outfit KC Current having purpose-built stadiums. The Hendon Hall hotel in north London hosted England when they won the World Cup in 1966 but the Inn at Meadowbrook will be their home if Thomas Tuchel’s side add a second star to the shirt, with training based at Swope Soccer Village – the home of Sporting Kansas City’s second team. The Football Association wanted the Compass Minerals National Performance Center to be England’s base, but lost out to Argentina due to the defending champions playing in the city. Two of the six fixtures in Group J - which includes Lionel Scaloni’s side - will be played in Kansas City. The Netherlands are using KC Current’s facilities while Algeria are based at the University of Kansas.“We are delighted to welcome England,” the chief executive of KC2026, Pam Kramer, told PA. “The arrival of one of the world’s most followed national teams is a significant moment for our city.“England’s decision to base themselves in Kansas City reflects our passionate sports culture, our spirit of hospitality and the world-class facilities that define our region. We are also proud to be hosting the Netherlands, Argentina and Algeria during the tournament, meaning four nations have chosen Kansas City as their home away from home.An aerial view of Swope Soccer Village, England’s official base for the World Cup (Getty)“It is a powerful endorsement of the investments in our region and proof that the global game has become part of the fabric of life here.“Kansas City has proudly earned its reputation as the Soccer Capital of America. Soccer has deep roots here.”The city is also priding itself on embracing the tournament more than any other and believes its Fifa Fan Festival will be the best in the tournament.Around 25,000 fans flocked to the site in the shadows of the WW1 Memorial and Museum to watch the United States’ opening match against Paraguay on Friday night, a sparkling 4-1 win for the tournament co-hosts. Organisers have attracted big-name performers such as Flo Rida, Sheryl Crow and The Chainsmokers.

India vs Afghanistan: Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya injuries open doors for Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy
TimesofIndia. com in Dharamsala: The injuries to Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya have left coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill with several questions to answer as India's road to the 2027 ODI World Cup begins on Saturday at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala, where they take on Afghanistan in the first ODI of the three-match series.Who will bat at 3?If bowling coach Morne Morkel is to be believed, the management is looking to rotate two or three batters in Virat Kohli's No. 3 role."As for the No. 3 slot, that's something we'll explore during this series. Whether it's Ishan (Kishan), KL (Rahul) or Yashasvi (Jaiswal), it's a nice opportunity," he told reporters."We've got a few one-day games coming up and we'll give guys opportunities in different positions to get a better idea of how we want to structure the team and what options we have."Filling Virat's shoes at the No 3 is going to be a big challenge for all three of them. Ishan Kishan was picked as backup opener and wicketkeeper into the squad before Kohli's injury. The TimesofIndia. com can confirm that the team management for long has wanted to have a southpaw in the top three. Now with Virat's injury, they will have a chance to pick either Ishan or Jaiswal. However, Ishan Kishan looked set to don the gloves as he had an extended session with fielding coach T Dilip after his batting session. Which means Jaiswal will have to wait.Meanwhile, KL Rahul, who has kept wicket in ODIs for the past three years and has made No 6 his own, is going to be India's most experienced batter in the middle-order. Will the management ask Rahul to bat at 3 in Kohli's absence, in that case India's middle-order will look fragile.NKR set to replace Hardik Hardik Pandya's absence has accelerated India's search for alternatives ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, and bowling coach Morne Morkel believes Nitish Kumar Reddy has earned his chance."You always look at your options, whether it's batting, bowling or all-rounders," said Morkel."Unfortunately, Hardik is missing this series after picking up quite a niggle just before joining camp. But again, it's another opportunity for Nitish Kumar Reddy."He's been playing beautifully over the last couple of years and has done a lot of work on his game. Like the new bowlers coming into the squad, it's an opportunity for players in that role to put their hands up and maybe make life difficult for the selectors."Nitish Kumar Reddy is by no means a ready product. He has definitely worked on his bowling with Steffan Jones but is he Hardik Pandya? The one-word answer to that question is: no.However, bowling Morne Morkel showered praise on the young all-rounder and tipped that he is going to play on Saturday."I always encourage players to work on their games and identify areas where they can improve," said Morkel."Nitish did that. From a technical point of view, it was about getting him into a better position, creating more balance so that the energy flows down the wicket. We believe there's improvement in both departments of his game."We're excited for him to get an opportunity and see how he puts it together on the international stage," added Morkel.Gurnoor and Prince to get their chanceWith Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj being rested for this series, it has opened the door for India's next generation of fast bowlers, with bowling coach Morne Morkel viewing the Afghanistan series as an important step in building depth ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa."That's definitely part of our thinking and our vision: to give ourselves options for the World Cup in South Africa," Morkel said. While acknowledging that "we know what Bumrah can do with the new ball," he stressed the importance of exposing young bowlers to high-pressure international cricket.Morkel was particularly encouraged by his early impressions of Prince and Gurnoor, with the duo he worked tirelessly during the one-off Test against Afghanistan."It almost felt like they'd been part of the squad for five years," he said, praising the duo's composure and work ethic. "They were accurate and on the money," he added. 131699436

Kylian Mbappé on Michael Olise: ‘He saves his words; his feet do the talking for him.’
Kylian Mbappé on Michael Olise: ‘He saves his words; his feet do the talking for him.’Ahead of France’s FIFA World Cup opener against Senegal, captain Kylian Mbappé (27) has spoken to L’Équipe about the 25 other players included in Les Bleus’ squad, including Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise (24). Olise goes into the World Cup as one of the most in-form players. At club level, the former Crystal Palace forward had an exceptional campaign, registering 22 goals and 31 assists in 52 games in all competitions. Including games with Les Bleus, he is now on 60 goal contributions after he netted a hat-trick in France’s 3-0 win in Lille on Monday night. Speaking in a post-match press conference attended by Get French Football News, Deschamps was full of praise for Olise: “He is radiant through the season he has had at Bayern and with us as well. He is full of confidence. He is so decisive.”‘Olise is the player of today and tomorrow’ – MbappéDeschamps added that Olise was an “introverted” character, and that isn’t lost on Mbappé either. “Now, we speak French together. He speaks well. But he has this personality that means that you, in the media, you’ll never know if his French is improving or not because he won’t speak to you too much! He doesn’t like that; that’s how he is. Michael is introverted. He saves his words; his feet do the talking for him,” said Mbappé.The Real Madrid forward added, “Accept him how he is. He will never change. In addition to being an extraordinary player, he is a great person […] Olise is the player of today and tomorrow. He has this elegance, this vision in his game. I get on very well with him.”GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Lions DC comments on Detroit's new group of edge rushers
Upgrading its group of edge rushers was a key area of emphasis for the Detroit Lions this offseason. In his media remarks this week to wrap the Lions' OTAs, second-year defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard said adding length was one of the organization's focuses as it went about revamping its group of edge rushers."On the first look at it, it's like, 'Oh, it's changed over there.' In that corner, you look during individual, there's a lot of big, long, tall (players). The biggest thing that stands out to me is length. That's something that we kind of attacked, and we saw that we needed. Like always, we mentioned it and the front office did a great job trying to go out and kind of attain and attract some of the top guys per what we were looking for, and I thought they did a great job."It is a good mix and blend. You have some long, you have some more shorter, powerful, so to say, type players. So, the first thing I think, it's going to be a lot of competition come training camp with that unit. I mean, it's six, seven guys right now I'm looking at and they all look like they can play and have potential. It's just a matter of when the pads come on and kind of how does that look," Sheppard said. The Lions signed DJ Wonnum and Payton Turner in free agency, Detroit drafted Derrick Moore in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft and inked Anthony Lucas as an undrafted free agent."We're very excited for that group. But, when it comes to the length, that's what you look for on the edges nowadays, especially what complements the werewolf that we have. What does that look like? A lot of guys want this juiced up, speedball type player, but does that truly complement what that player does well? And that's something that we had to sit back as a staff, as a front office and look at, and I think we all are on the same page as far as what we're looking for to complement that player," Sheppard said. For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like. They put six past Panama in a 6-2 win before beating Egypt 2-1 in their final match before the tournament.Unlike many other nations Morocco played four warm up fixtures before the tournament, winning three and drawing one. They beat Paraguay, Burundi and Madagascar but draw 1-1 with Norway. What’s been said?Carlo Ancelotti did not play down the test that Morocco will be for Brazil.“Don’t forget, tomorrow we are facing the champions of Africa, Morocco. They’re a great team,” he said.“Morocco are a great team and they have complete players who perform in Europe. In order to beat them, we have to defend better and attack better, otherwise we will be in trouble.”Morocco boss Mohamed Ouahbi said he is not scared of Ancelotti’s Brazil side.“It’s a match that will tell us where we stand, but I think we’re in a good place to start this competition,” said Ouahbi, who replaced Walid Regragui as Morocco boss in March.“We’ve got to be in confident in ourselves and what we’ve done. We shouldn’t fear Brazil but treat them with respect.“Lots of people say it’s not the Brazil of old, but it’s still Brazil.”

ASK IRA: If Heat had the choice, would/should it be Jaylen or Giannis?
Q: Ira, since you are part of the noise, one more question for you: Would you rather have Giannis Antetokounmpo or Jaylen Brown? – Herman.A: First, no one is sure that even would be a choice, with nothing definitive about Jaylen Brown being available, or, for that matter, nothing definitive about the Bucks trading Giannis Antetokounmpo (which is why this is all such a waiting game). But if you do want to consider some sort of wheel, where it’s Giannis to Boston, Jaylen to Miami and the Heat’s best package (plus possible pieces from Boston) to the Bucks, it does create pause. Giannis is the better player than Jaylen. But when it comes to chemistry, a case could be made for Brown being the better Heat fit alongside Bam Adebayo. Basically, either would make the Heat better (which is not saying much, considering the Heat are coming off consecutive 10th-place finishes). But as with all trades, it typically is about the best player in play, which, in this case, would remain Giannis.Related Articles Submit your “Ask Ira” question here! Q: This is all a strategy by Milwaukee to fleece more out of Pat Riley or whatever organization wants to trade for Giannis. – Spencer.A: Which is what any organization should be trying to do. The difference here is the Heat’s starting point basically has been anything and everything the Bucks could want shy of Bam Adebayo. So if Milwaukee is pushing for even more, there isn’t that much more there to give.Q: When is the last time you have answered this many questions about a player who wasn’t on the Heat? – Nathan.A: Easy, that would have been the Summer of ’23, when you simply could have subbed out the amount of times “Giannis” has been used in this space in recent weeks for the name “Dame.” The reality is that the Damian Lillard chase went on for months, until he finally was dealt by the Trail Blazers to the Bucks in September 2023. The expectation with Giannis Antetokounmpo is resolution by the June 23 first round of the draft. (Of course, if you also factor in the amount of times Giannis was mentioned prior to February’s NBA trade deadline, the count would be pretty darn close.)

Mike Macdonald predicts Seattle's reaction to Kenneth Walker's return
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald. In his interview with Easton Jr., Macdonald discusses his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe and air on NBC and Peacock. He discussed Super Bowl LX MVP Keneth Walker III signing with the Kansas City Chiefs during the offseason."I'm just learning who is actually in the (American Century Championship) tournament. So all these people look awesome to meet. Just going in with an open mind and have a good time," said Macdonald, "Take a deep breath on the first tee and take some of the coaching that we give our guys, not to let the pressure get to you. But everyone that I've talked to who's played in this tournament loves it. A good opportunity to play some great golf, be around family and friends, and meet some cool people."Walker signed a maximum of $45M over three years, with $28.7M of his contract fully guaranteed to join the Chiefs' backfield. Seattle will host Kansas City in Week 7 on Sunday Night Football. Macdonald believes there will be positive energy from the Seattle crowd that night, especially after Walker returned for the Seattle ring ceremony."There's so much that needs to happen between now and then," said Macdonald, "We're all looking forward to seeing Ken (Kenneth Walker). I know he's excited to come back. We love Ken. We're rooting for him. Obviously, we'll be competing against him that night."Last season with the Seahawks, Walker rushed for 1,027 yards and five touchdowns. He was also impactful in the passing game with 31 receptions for 282 yards."I'm sure the 12s will cheer him on. He's done a lot of great things for our team, our organization, and our fan base," said Macdonald. "We're rooting for him, but obviously we'll compete against him that night." I'm looking forward to seeing him tonight and seeing the smile on his face. I'm glad he got the contract that he did. He deserves it."The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, over $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC/Peacock and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in golf.Check out the website for more information about the American Century Championship. This article originally appeared on Chiefs Wire: Mike Macdonald predicts Seattle's reaction to Kenneth Walker's return

What is it like to play for Scotland at a World Cup?
Surreal. Special. The stuff of dreams. Some of the replies from those lucky enough to know what it's like to play at a World Cup for Scotland when asked the question we all fantasise about. This is uncharted territory for every one of the 26-man squad who will end Scotland's 28-year absence from the men's tournament this weekend.A large proportion of Steve Clarke's players do have European Championship experience, but don't know what it's like to play on the biggest stage of them all. To have the eyes of the world on the boys in dark blue.No pressure, lads. This is also a new thing for a whole generation of Scots - players and fans alike - who have grown up meticulously making their case for their tournament team in the absence of their home nation. No need for a second team this time.So for those of us experiencing all this for the first time, what can we expect to see? What is it like to play at the World Cup with Scotland?Scotland return to centre stage at last in must-win World Cup openerThe rise and rise of 'Meatball' McGinnIs Shankland finally the striker Scotland have been waiting for?'When Ronaldo is standing next to you, reality kicks in'BBC Sport Scotland called on the knowledge of 1998 World Cup squad members Darren Jackson and Paul Lambert, as well as the last player to captain Scotland at the women's finals in 2019, Rachel Corsie, to enlighten and excite us.All three said it was "surreal".Lambert and Corsie explained the build-up - the bit where the fans are frantically booking planes, trains and automobiles - as perhaps being the most "stressful" part of the process from qualifying."You're like, I want to be in the best condition of my life," said Corsie, who skippered Scotland in France seven years ago said. "I don't want to get hurt, I want to get selected, I want to be playing for my club, there's so many things that you're thinking and you just think, I just want us to get there.""It feels like endless build-up," Lambert added."Then, when you're selected, that's when it really sinks in that you know the summer could be the greatest tournament for the national team. It's the best tournament."For Jackson, who didn't make his international debut until he was 28, said it wasn't until he lined up in the Stade de France for the tournament opener against Brazil that things started to feel real."When you're standing in the tunnel and the guy standing next to you is Ronaldo, reality kicks in," he explained.Add Rivaldo, Dunga, Roberto Carlos, Cafu and the rest and you've got a point, Darren. Gulp.'A moment to cherish the rest of your life'No disrespect to Haiti, but it's not quite the same opening glamour game 28 years on for Scotland, although the occasion is just as outrageously cool."It's what you dream of when you're playing in the streets with your mates," Champions League winner Lambert said."There's no fatigue. You don't have time for fatigue and you don't think about the season that's going to come up on you in a few months' time. "All you do is think about the games and the occasion you're going to play."It can be a bit of a balancing act, though, as Corsie experienced. "I probably leaned too heavily into trying to not let the occasion be something that threw me off," she said."I probably felt I probably didn't let myself enjoy it enough, and that would be the one thing I would say, that I hope the players do manage to enjoy it. "Because this is going to be a moment in your career you're going to cherish for the rest of your life. Your family and friends will be so proud. "Everyone wants to make sure the players who are there performing actually go and enjoy the moment, because what a special thing to go and do."'Club atmosphere key'The word 'go' there is a big one. It's a long time to be away from family and spend with a squad and staff. The good thing is, this crop can't wait to do it. They never tire of telling us that. The class of 1998 had the same togetherness - Lambert cited the "club atmosphere" Craig Brown built - which made the long hours and downtime much easier."We were like clubmates," Jackson said. "We didn't all just sit in the same seats in the meetings or at dinner, you just came in and sat with anybody and everyone got along. It was brilliant."Much like the squad now. They enjoy meeting up, seeing each other and playing alongside each other."Nowadays, they don't only do that, they have a round of golf when they can and play the PlayStation together. Didn't have that in the 90s.For Corsie in France, where a lot of travelling was also involved, there were "a lot of card games and lots of coffee trips".John McGinn did call John Souttar the barista...'Embrace it; enjoy it'The world has changed a fair bit since the Scots last graced the big stage in the men's game so it's safe to say almost everything is going to be different this time - including the goodies. We've heard from the squad this week that a picture of their younger selves in a Scotland shirt greeted them in their room at their base camp in Charlotte, while captain Andy Robertson delivered a gift box and hand-written message to each team-mate.Jackson and Lambert didn't get the same from their skipper, Colin Hendry. Free agent Wales players put themselves in shop window
Forwards Elise Hughes (left) and Hannah Cain (right) scored eight of Wales' 17 goals in their Women's World Cup qualifying group [FAW]Rhian Wilkinson says Wales' free-agent internationals gave potential suitors a glimpse of their qualities by helping her team finish top of their Women's World Cup qualifying group.Gemma Evans, Hannah Cain and Elise Hughes all featured against both Montenegro and the Czech Republic amid uncertainty over their club futures. It has since emerged that defender Evans is in line to join Newcastle United after leaving Liverpool, but there is no news yet on what the future holds at club level for either Cain or fellow forward Hughes."I think they've done everything they can to put themselves in the shop window," said Wales head coach Wilkinson.Cain, 27, scored her sixth goal in six World Cup qualifying games in Montenegro, just three days after announcing that she is leaving Leicester City this summer following their relegation from the Women's Super League (WSL).Fellow striker Hughes, 25, revealed in the lead-up to Tuesday's crucial win over the Czechs that she is departing Crystal Palace having helped them win promotion to the WSL.Wilkinson's Wales give themselves World Cup chanceWales can reach Women's World Cup - WilkinsonAnother Wales forward, Tianna Teisar, is also currently without a club.Bristol City Women announced in May that the 20-year-old academy product would be leaving the club this summer, having spent last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle.Wilkinson says she has to accept that waiting to discover where some members of her squad will end up is part of "life at the end of the season"."It's tough because I want my players to be in the best possible situations at club [level] and equally in situations that are nurturing them and supporting them," she added."I hope very much I can give them any support possible to make sure that they have a club as soon as it works for them."Wales will return to action in October, when they will play a two-legged play-off semi-final as they bid to reach a first Women's World Cup.Wilkinson's side will discover their opponents in that tie when the draw takes place on 18 June.

Matthaüs hits out at Müller and Klopp's plea for Undav to start Curaçao game
Matthaüs hits out at Müller and Klopp's plea for Undav to start Curaçao gameDuring a World Cup broadcast on Magenta TV, Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Müller put together their ideal Germany lineup for Sunday, picking Deniz Undav instead of Jamal Musiala. The idea was that Musiala could be substituted on later against the tired legs of Curaçao to help spaces open up – safe to say Lothar Matthäus was is clearly against this notion.“I was very surprised when I saw that Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Müller advised playing Deniz Undav instead of Jamal Musiala in the opening match," Matthaüs told BILD."I accept their opinion, but I don't want to let it stand. I feel it lacks sensitivity. Jürgen Klopp, of all people, should know better. To have a successful World Cup, Germany needs the quality of Musiala."That's why he needs to be given trust and playing time. Klopp's comments aren't exactly making Nagelsmann's job any easier. I'd like to see what Klopp would have said if a pundit had advised him to bench one of his regular starters before an important Champions League match.“Such interference isn't well received, especially among fellow coaches. We all know that Musiala isn't yet at his best. But instead of creating unrest around him, we should be supporting him,” he saidThe 1990 FIFA World Cup winner also took aim at ex-Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller, questioning why someone with his level of experience would speak out against a former teammate."I also found it somewhat odd how Thomas Müller was talking about Jamal Musiala, his former teammate with whom he has recently been playing. I'm a TV pundit myself and I know that criticism is part of the job.“But not a single minute of the World Cup has been played yet, and already this kind of discussion is being started. And especially now, when Musiala showed improving form in the second half against the USA,” he concluded.

Real Madrid no longer prioritising move for Barcelona’s priority signing – Romano
Real Madrid no longer prioritising move for Barcelona’s priority signing – RomanoReal Madrid’s ambitious attempt to sign Julian Alvarez appears to have entered a period of uncertainty after Los Blancos emerged as candidates for the Argentinian earlier this week.According to Fabrizio Romano, communication between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid regarding Alvarez has now stopped.Los Blancos have not submitted any new offer since their initial proposal earlier this week, leaving negotiations effectively at a standstill.Real Madrid had officially revealed that they had submitted a €150 million bid for the Argentine forward. Atletico responded on social media, brutally mocking their cross-city rivals.Alvarez has established himself as one of the most complete forwards in European football since arriving at Atletico Madrid.Real Madrid are no longer interested in Julian Alvarez. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)His goalscoring ability, relentless work rate and tactical intelligence have made him one of the most admired players in La Liga, naturally attracting attention from clubs across the continent.Atletico Madrid remain in a strong positionAtletico have been very clear in their stance that a sale is not on the cards this summer.Alvarez remains one of the cornerstones of Diego Simeone’s project, and the club know they hold a valuable negotiating position. That reality appears to have contributed to the current silence between the clubs. Barcelona are also interested in the 26-year-old, but there is no movement on that front either. If Atletico open the door at all, which in itself is a big question mark, it could see the two biggest clubs in Spain go head-to-head to try to sign Alvarez.Real Madrid may need to look elsewhereReal Madrid made an audacious attempt for Alvarez. (Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images)If Real Madrid were actually interested in signing Alvarez, and if this was not just political play from Florentino Perez to win the elections, they may have to recalibrate their plans.Alvarez is widely regarded as one of the few forwards capable of leading an elite attack for the next decade. That quality naturally comes with a price tag that places him among the most expensive players in world football.Madrid also have a stacked attack. The club have the likes of Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo and Endrick all vying for a spot in Mourinho’s team, and adding Alvarez to the mix could result in further confusion.Whether Atletico’s stance changes later in the summer remains to be seen, but for now, the club’s pursuit of Alvarez has reached a temporary standstill.

Fernando Alonso Torches F1 Critics: “Verstappen Is the Best Driver”
Fernando Alonso has officially run out of patience for fans and pundits who judge Formula 1 drivers purely by their Wikipedia statistics. In a blisteringly honest interview with Mundo Deportivo, the two-time World Champion delivered a harsh reality check regarding the current state of the grid. While Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli is currently running away with the 2026 World Championship thanks to a massive machinery advantage, Alonso made it incredibly clear who he believes is actually the most talented man behind the wheel. And more importantly, he explained exactly why that talent won’t be enough to win the title this year. The Ultimate Verstappen DefenseWhen asked about how drivers are perceived based solely on their win columns, Alonso did not mince words. He pointed directly to the current struggles of World Champion Max Verstappen, who is fighting a brutal uphill battle in an inferior Red Bull chassis.“There’s no need to waste time explaining to people who don’t want to understand either,” Alonso told the Spanish outlet. He then dropped a massive quote that perfectly summarizes the harsh engineering reality of modern Formula 1: “Verstappen is the best driver on the grid, and this year he’s going to finish 5th or 6th in the World Championship.”May 22, 2026; Montreal, Quebec, CANADA; Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen (3) during practice session before the Lenovo Grand Prix Du Canada at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Mandatory Credit: David Kirouac-Imagn ImagesIt is a devastatingly accurate assessment. As we have covered throughout the 2026 season, the FIA’s controversial ADUO engine regulations have effectively handed Mercedes a golden development ticket. Verstappen isn’t losing because he forgot how to drive; he is losing because he is bringing a knife to a gunfight. The “Pink Mercedes” Reality CheckTo hammer his point home, Alonso pulled a brilliant anecdote from the 2020 season involving his current Aston Martin teammate, Lance Stroll.During that season, Racing Point (the team that would eventually become Aston Martin) showed up with the RP20—a car so visually and mechanically identical to the 2019 championship-winning Mercedes that the paddock universally dubbed it the “Pink Mercedes.” The car was an absolute rocket ship, and it instantly catapulted Stroll to the front of the grid.Alonso recalled the sheer absurdity of the media’s reaction to Stroll’s sudden surge in pace.“Lance went to the FIA press conference, and they asked him: ‘Lance, you improved by three and a half seconds. What did you change this winter?'” Alonso explained. “And he said: ‘I didn’t change anything, I improved by three and a half seconds because I have the car of these two guys next to me’.”Deconstructing the Hamilton DominanceAlonso didn’t stop at Stroll. He took the argument a step further, taking a direct shot at the era of absolute dominance enjoyed by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas during the peak of the turbo-hybrid regulations.According to Alonso, the machinery advantage was so severe during that era that it completely skewed the historical perception of driver talent across the entire grid.“If the drivers who are out in Q1 had had that Mercedes from Hamilton and Bottas at that time, they’d always be on the Formula 1 podiums,” Alonso stated bluntly. It is the ultimate taboo statement in Formula 1, but it is exactly what makes Alonso such an invaluable voice in the paddock. As the 2026 season continues to be dictated by the gaping development chasm between the top teams, Alonso is making sure everyone remembers that the man standing on the top step of the podium isn’t always the best driver on the track.Sometimes, he just has the best engineers.

‘We tease each other a lot’ – Kylian Mbappe opens up on his relationship with Barcelona’s Jules Kounde
HAMBURG, GERMANY - JULY 05: Kylian Mbappe of France speaks with Jules Kounde as they warm up prior to the UEFA EURO 2024 quarter-final match between Portugal and France at Volksparkstadion on July 05, 2024 in Hamburg, Germany. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) | Getty Images Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he enjoys plenty of banter with France team-mate Jules Kounde due to the rivalry between their two club sides. The two players are currently with Les Bleus for World Cup 2026 and Mbappe admits that Kounde has the upper hand when it comes to bragging rights recently due to Barcelona’s success and Madrid’s lack of trophies.“Do I see him as a Barcelona player since I’ve been at Real Madrid? Yeah, totally!” he told L’Equipe.“We tease each other a lot more than when I was in Paris. Okay, he’s had the last word a bit more lately because we’re not winning, but we’ve always been able to separate things when it comes to the national team. “We get along well. He’s a guy I talk to about a lot of things, especially politics.”Kounde famously scored a brilliant winner against Real Madrid to seal the Copa del Rey in 2025 and has also picked up La Liga titles in the last two seasons.Mbappe, meanwhile, is yet to win a major trophy since joining Madrid from PSG in 2024.

Texas A&M 'definitely made a mark' for 2027 5-star CB after his OV
Texas A&M's future secondary is on pace to include one of two five-star cornerbacks in the 2027 recruiting class, as third-year coach Mike Elko and new CB coach Bryant Gross-Armiento have heavily pursued cornerbacks John Meredith and Joshua Dobson, who both took their official visit with the Aggies over the past two weekends. As things stand, just two weeks into June, the Texas Longhorns have now become the favorite to land John Meredith, while Texas A&M is the leader for Joshua Dobson, who has had nothing but positive things to say about College Station and the Aggie coaching staff, recently speaking with On3 recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong nearly a week after his A&M OV. Throughout his recruiting process, the message from Mike Elko has stayed consistent, centered on being a key part of the No. 1-ranked recruiting class that already features a nation-high 5 five-star commits. The combination of Dobson with five-star cornerback Raylaun Henry would be lethal on paper. “Man, the experience was great,” Dobson stated. “They really put on a big show and they are definitely on top. I can’t wait to see what the future holds. I’m looking at committing early July so definitely going to take these last two but they definitely made a mark.”After taking an OV to Auburn, Michigan, and South Carolina will receive visits over the next two weekends, and while the Wolverines still have a shot to land his commitment, Texas A&M's recent NFL Draft success, which included a record 10 players selected in late April, has likely made an impact on every current and future prospect, proving that Elko knows how to develop.Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. World Cup Day 2: Reyna wondergoal, Lalas gaffe, comical FIFA, Partey barred
World Cup Day 2: Reyna wondergoal, Lalas gaffe, comical FIFA, Partey barredNow that all three co-hosts have played their opening match, the 2026 World Cup is well and truly underway in Canada, Mexico and the United States. We’ve recapped all the happenings from matchday two, including what you missed overnight and the biggest stories from Friday. You can read our round-up of day one here.World Cup Day 2 recap:Reyna scores golazo as USA trounce ParaguayThe US made a dream start to the tournament on home soil as they beat Paraguay 4-1 in Los Angeles in their first meeting since the first World Cup in 1930.Folarin Balogun grabbed a brace in the first half, including a brilliant strike into the top corner, after Damian Bobadilla scored an own goal just six minutes into the match. Mauricio got one back for Paraguay, but substitute Gio Reyna restored the Americans’ three-goal lead with a stunning outside-of-the-boot finish deep into stoppage time. The only sour note from a terrific night for the US was the halftime substitution of star player Christian Pulisic, which was made after he took a kick to the leg. Manager Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful, however, that the attacker hasn’t sustained a serious injury.Read – How to watch World Cup highlights this summerCanada win first ever World Cup pointSuper sub Cyle Larin earned Canada their first ever point at a World Cup when he scored the equaliser just moments after coming off the bench on Friday.Bosnia and Herzegovina were looking to spoil the party vibe in Toronto when Jovo Lukic opened the scoring in the first half. But Jesse Marsch’s men were much better on the day and deserved more than a draw for their efforts.Lalas said what? For those who are not aware, Alexi Lalas is a former US international turned pundit who has been living off the cult hero status he cultivated at the 1994 World Cup. His ‘analysis’ of the sport is absolutely brutal and he often comes across as completely clueless. That was the case on Friday when he blurted out that James Corden (another insufferable personality) is a “full kit wanker”, entirely unaware that is an offensive term in Britain. The reactions of his colleagues are priceless. Thierry Henry’s eyebrows almost shot to the back of his head, presenter Rebecca Lowe is left stunlocked, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic lets out a typically reserved “woah”.The over-the-top reactions were amusing, given had this happened on British television, the presenter would have simply apologised for foul language and moved on. But I suppose hearing an American casually calling someone a wanker on live TV was shocking enough to warrant the shocked faces.Read – The youngest players to ever feature at a World CupFIFA fudging the figures?Tickets have been a hot button issue leading up to the start of the World Cup, with FIFA being accused of gouging fans by using dynamic pricing to charge exorbitant fees, both at the first point of sale and on their resale site. This led many to wonder how this would affect attendances, particularly at matches featuring smaller nations, with locals and travelling supporters being effectively priced out. These concerns were borne out when Korea Republic came from behind to beat Czechia in front of a swathe of empty seats in Guadalajara. Confusion reigned when the official attendance figure was announced to be 44,985, less than 700 people shy of the ground’s capacity.FIFA made a comical attempt to explain this incongruence away by claiming that “several ticketed fans could be seen standing in concourses rather than staying in their assigned seats throughout the match”. “We want to do something special.” Scotland boss Steve Clarke ahead of World Cup return
“We want to do something special.” Scotland boss Steve Clarke ahead of World Cup return“We want to do something special.” The words were uttered by Scotland head coach Steve Clarke ahead of his side’s first World Cup game in almost three decades, when they will take on Haiti.Clarke spoke with the media yesterday to preview his side’s opening game, which is almost certainly their best chance at three points in the group phase. Despite this, Clarke ensured his players would not take the occasion lightly, stating, “It’s important we respect the opposition, make sure we are properly prepared, which we are, we play to the best of our ability, and we see where we are.”There had been a shadow of doubt cast over Scott McTominay’s availability for the match, after the midfielder reportedly travelled to Boston separately from the rest of the squad due to an upset stomach. However, his boss put those worries to bed with just four words on the 29-year-old, “Perfect. Ready to go.”Clarke went on to try to alleviate some of the pressure surrounding McTominay’s performances by stating, “I think I have 26 superstars here. If you try to put so much on one player is not fair. Some daft coach put him as a centre-half five years ago, obviously, he’s not a centre-half. We are delighted with Scott’s abilities, but we’ll need another 15 if we want a positive tournament.” It’s safe to say, though, that this Scott McTominay is a very different player from the one included in Clarke’s Euro 2024 squad, where Scotland made a group stage exit with just a single point. He went on to reflect on that tournament by jokingly saying, “Germany one is easy… don’t get humped.” The Tartan Army lost 5-1 to the Germans in the opening fixture of the tournament. He also spoke on the fans and how he wants to make them proud, “The younger ones in the group are always showing me clips of back home. Everyone seems so excited. Let’s hope we don’t let them down.”The 62-year-old gave nothing away about his starting XI either, stating, “Team selection is always difficult…I still haven’t picked the team yet, to be honest. The team don’t know yet.”Andy Robertson followed shortly after Clarke and said, “I’ve been very fortunate to play in big games, win trophies, play for the biggest club in the world, but for me, playing for your country is that one step above. To do it at a World Cup is a dream come true. I’m so proud and happy that this group are the one who has done it.” Further emphasising just how big a moment this is for Scotland.

Undav "very pleased" over Müller's high praise ahead of Group E encounter
Undav "very pleased" over Müller's high praise ahead of Group E encounterDeniz Undav revealed he was “very pleased” to hear both Thomas Müller and Jürgen Klopp said he should start ahead of Jamal Musiala for Germany's clash Curaçao this Sunday.“That shows I'm doing something right. The coach has many options,” explained the versatile forward, who has largely been limited to a substitute role under Julian Nagelsmann.“In the end, it doesn't matter who starts. You can rely on those who will play. But I was happy to hear that from the two of them. And now we'll see who plays,” he said at a media round. The VfB Stuttgart marksman – coming into this tournament off the back of a 25-goal season – was extremely happy to receive 2014 World Cup winner Thomas Müller's seal of approval."I think it's good because Thomas knows a lot about football. If he has something to criticize or praise, then it's probably well-founded. I'm happy when someone like Thomas criticizes or praises me.“If he criticizes me, then of course he does it with a good intention, so that I can do better next time. Therefore, no matter what Thomas says, he's entitled to it,” Undav pointed out.

Lando Norris Teases Future Carlos Sainz F1 Pairing at Barcelona Grand Prix: “In a Few Years”
Carlos Sainz currently races for Williams. Lando Norris is the reigning world champion at McLaren. The two men haven’t shared a garage since 2020. And yet, standing on stage at a McLaren Mastercard fan event ahead of the 2026 Barcelona Grand Prix, Norris couldn’t resist hinting that their famous partnership might not be finished with Formula 1 just yet.Asked to say something in Spanish by the crowd, Norris played it self-deprecating first: “I’m sorry, I don’t know any Spanish. Carlos taught me a lot back in the days, but it’s been a long time.” He continued, adding an exciting moment for fans: “Me and Carlos were speaking the other day and we said one day in Formula 1, we will have a reunion of ‘Carlando’. So… in a few years, in maybe five… five years, six years.”The crowd reaction probably tells you everything you need to know about how much “Carlando” still means to fans.lando: “i’m sorry i don’t know any spanish. carlos taught me a lot back in the days but it’s been a long time. actually, me and carlos were speaking the other day and we said one day in f1 we will have a reunion of carlando in a few years, maybe 5-6 years”[:nats.formula] pic.twitter.com/NLCWEC9ugg— ray (@ln4norris) June 13, 2026Why This Pairing Still Has Such a Hold on F1 FansThe friendship between the two drivers took root during their shared years at McLaren in 2019 and 2020, with fans quickly branding them “Carlando” thanks to their competitive banter, golf rivalry, and genuine chemistry during media commitments.Sainz departed the team at the end of 2020, moving to Ferrari, where he spent four seasons before being replaced by Lewis Hamilton. That exit didn’t affect the friendship, though. Earlier in 2026, the pair reunited under Norris’ Quadrant motorsportbrand, swapping their usual machinery for a tour through a century of karting history. So when Norris mentions that a reunion on the F1 grid is something the two have actually discussed, it lands differently than a throwaway press-event line.Sainz is contracted to Williams through at least the end of 2026 , and while McLaren’s seat isn’t going anywhere, F1 grids have changed in stranger ways. Five or six years is a long runway in this sport. Before wrapping his address to the crowd, Norris called out to the sea of papaya ahead of him: “There’s a lot of papaya in the crowd today, so we appreciate it.”

Only Peter Gonzalez Until Penn State Football
Penn State wide receivers Peter Gonzalez (84) and Josiah Brown (19) laugh together during football media day in Holuba Hall on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in State College. | Dan Rainville / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images It’s Saturday, but there’s still another 12 weeks until Penn State takes the field to kick off the 2026 season. It’s been a long time coming for Peter Gonzalez to return to the field. Gonzalez took a redshirt season to learn the ropes in 2024, coming to Penn State as one of the top 10 prospects out of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, an injury took away his entire 2025 season. Gonzalez is now looking for his turn to prove himself under a new staff. At 6-2, 211 lbs., he has intriguing athleticism for his size and could become a factor for a new-look Penn State offense. It’s been a long time coming, but Gonzalez is preparing to show what he can do in front of a packed Beaver Stadium in another 84 days. WE ARE…

Arsenal international misses pre-World Cup training with ongoing injury
Arsenal international misses pre-World Cup training with ongoing injuryWilliam Saliba has now missed multiple France training sessions, in a worrying sign following previous reports on his ongoing injury problem.Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty ImagesL’Equipe report that William Saliba has now missed both of France’s training sessions since arriving in Boston ahead of the World Cup.Didier Deschamps squad held training on Thursday and Friday, and Saliba didn’t take part on either occasion. Saliba was present to do laps of the pitch alongside Adrien Rabiot, but he didn’t participate in the group session with the rest of the squad.Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty ImagesThe positive spin on this news is that Saliba is still fit enough to take part in individual training, and that France are clearly taking care with him to avoid aggravating his issue.Previous reports had confirmed that the defender has been struggling with a back injury in recent weeks, and though he isn’t expected to withdraw from the World Cup, he needs to be managed carefully, and he may require an operation after the tournament. The exact nature of the operation has never been specified, but Arsenal are reportedly aware that Saliba may miss the start of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images For Premier LeagueSaliba previously missed around three months of football in 2022/23 with a back problem, his longest absence since joining Arsenal. The defender made 50 appearances as Arsenal won the Premier League and reached the finals of the Champions League and League Cup this season, and the Gunners have often run into difficulties without him.The fans will now be sweating on Saliba’s involvement at the World Cup and the outcome of his potential post-season operation.Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images

Kayvon Thibodeaux: Giants defense 'almost cursed with too much talent'
New York Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux will enter a critical point in his career this season.Thibodeaux will need to be at his best in Year 5, as the linebacker has had an up-and-down start over the first four seasons of his NFL career. New York originally selected Thibodeaux with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, and despite flashes of elite potential, he has struggled to make a consistent impact on the Giants’ defense. The Giants will enter the 2026 campaign with one of the most talented defensive units in the NFL. New York in particular boasts significant depth at the outside linebacker position, which could quickly create an uphill battle for Thibodeaux in 2026 should he struggle early on.The talented linebacker recently addressed the Giants’ depth at the position, acknowledging just how stacked the group truly is.Kayvon Thibodeaux says the Giants have a "scary" defensive front:"We're almost cursed with too much talent. We have a matchup problem, no matter what team we face." pic.twitter.com/4nFGanPH8b— SNY Giants (@SNYGiants) June 9, 2026“It’s scary,” he said. “I love it, man. We’re almost cursed with too much talent. We have a matchup problem no matter what team we face. I think just being able to work together and play off each other, continuing to build that chemistry, will be key for us.”Thibodeaux recorded 25 total tackles and 2.5 sacks across 10 appearances on the Giants’ defense last season. The veteran will undoubtedly enter the most important year of his career in 2026, and Thibodeaux appears fully confident in both his own abilities and those of the group as a whole heading into training camp. This article originally appeared on Giants Wire: Kayvon Thibodeaux: Giants defense 'almost cursed with too much talent'

Titans' 1st-round WR thought he was 'locked in' with Commanders
Before April's 2026 NFL Draft, almost every fan and analyst predicted the Washington Commanders would make a significant move at wide receiver. The name most often linked to Washington was Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate. The Commanders did end with a Buckeye at No. 7 overall, selecting linebacker Sonny Styles. However, Tate wasn't an option, as he went No. 4 to the Tennessee Titans. The pick was a shock. Tate going in the top 10 was not a surprise. But many believed his ceiling was at No. 6 with the Cleveland Browns. Even Tate was surprised he went No. 4. In his gut, Tate thought he was "locked in" with the Commanders. "No, I didn't know I was going to go that early," Tate told Amon-Ra St. Brown and Equanimeous St. Brown on the St. Brown Podcast."We thought my draft started at four — and then 4 to 15 — but realistically, I thought I was gonna go 6, 7, or 8.Was he shocked?"I was shocked, for real," Tate responded. "I didn’t expect to go that high. And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Damn, let’s go play ball now.''"I thought I was locked in on the Commanders (at 7)."Carnell Tate speaks on his NFL Draft experience, noting that he didn't expect to go as high as No. 4 to the Titans 🏈 pic.twitter.com/Iyhwg87w4a— St. Brown Podcast (@StBrownPodcast) June 10, 2026Tate then mentioned the teams he believed were most interested in him. "I thought Cleveland, I thought they weren’t gonna pass up on me, and also the Commanders. So, I think I was locked in with the Commanders. And then they were saying, ‘Oh, the Chiefs, you’re not gonna get past them; if you’re there at No. 9, they’re gonna take you.’ But I thought I was going to the Commanders."Things worked out well for Tate and the Commanders. Tate was the first wide receiver chosen and goes to a team that also has a young quarterback in Cam Ward. Meanwhile, Washington found a defensive centerpiece in Styles, later adding Clemson wide receiver Antonio Williams to pair with Terry McLaurin as weapons for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Titans' Chimere Dike sees added competition as a benefit in 2026
In 2025, Tennessee Titans rookie wide receiver Chimere Dike burst onto the NFL scene and shattered the rookie all-purpose yardage record set by Hall of Famer Tim Brown that stood for multiple decades en route to Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. Now, heading into his second season, Dike is looking to make even more of an impact. While many don’t question his elite speed and return skills, there is a question of where he fits in the Titans’ receiving corps after the additions of Wan’Dale Robinson and Carnell Tate. In 2025, Dike started inside in the slot but also took snaps on the outside as the season progressed, and it is on the outside where he may be able to thrive in Brian Daboll’s offense. When asked about the added competition, he explained how it could benefit the Titans heading into the 2026 season.#Titans WR Chim Dike speaks after OTAs #TitanUppic.twitter.com/pgERG9Ckkd— 104-5 The Zone 📻 (@1045TheZone) June 11, 2026“I think iron sharpens iron,” Dike said. “We’ve got a lot of guys with different skill sets, but they all have high character, different experiences, and are fun to work with. They make it fun to come to work, and we all want to be better individually, and compete individually, and we want to be the best group we can be.”Dike does have the size and speed to be a mismatch on the outside, and could thrive both as a deep threat and on crossing routes, challenging the center of the defense. At 6-foot-1, Dike has the frame to work outside, and now having an offensive coordinator with the ability to gameplan and create mismatches with route combinations, he could be in line for an even bigger season in year two. This article originally appeared on Titans Wire: Tennessee Titans: Chimere Dike embracing competition in 2026

Find out Grêmio's top priority in the transfer window
Find out Grêmio's top priority in the transfer windowEven with more than a month to go before the next transfer window opens, Grêmio’s board is already mapping out squad moves for the second half of 2026. The main goal of the club from Rio Grande do Sul is clear: avoid major spending, focus on bargain deals and, above all, sell players to raise cash. After investing around R$ 100 million at the start of the year, the Tricolor will not do the same again. See how the club is structuring its priorities:The Search for ReinforcementsPriority at Right-Back: The main weakness of Luís Castro’s team is the right flank. At the moment, the specialists in the position (Marcos Rocha and João Pedro) have lost space, forcing the coach to use forward Pavon there as a makeshift option.Necessary Sales and ReplacementsGrêmio is not hiding its financial need to negotiate players in order to bring in funds.Highly valued assets: Midfielder Gabriel Mec and center-back Viery — both young and current starters — are the main candidates to be sold.Replacements: If those sales go through, the board will need to look for new replacements on the market so as not to weaken the starting team.Arthur’s SituationThe midfielder is only on a loan deal (from Juventus, Italy) until June 30.Despite the mutual desire for the player and Grêmio to continue together, there is still no agreement with the Italian club. Without a deal, the tendency is for the player to leave Porto Alegre.Cutting the Wage BillTo ease the pressure on its finances, the club also plans to move on players who have been little used by Luís Castro before this break in the calendar.Names such as Dodi, Monsalve, João Pedro and André Henrique are at the front of the line of possible departures.Center-back Kannemann has also been playing infrequently, but he has a different status because he is considered a key leader behind the scenes. Background: The 6 signings in the first half of the yearTo understand the current caution, it is worth recalling the club’s recent moves. Grêmio brought in six names at the start of the year:With financial investment: Leo Pérez and Nardoni (midfielders), Tetê and Enamorado (forwards).Without transfer fees: Weverton (goalkeeper, contract termination) and Caio Paulista (left-back, loan), both formerly of Palmeiras. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence.
