APNEWS.COM70 seconds, 26 passes and an iconic World Cup moment for the US and Gio ReynaUnited States' Giovanni Reyna, right, reacts after scoring his team's fourth goal during the World Cup Group D soccer match between the United States and Paraguay in Inglewood, Calif., near Los Angeles, Friday, June 12, 2026. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)2026-06-13T17:55:18Z It might go down as one of the iconic moments of the 2026 World Cup.It will certainly take something special to eclipse it as the goal of the tournament, even only three days in.Deep into added time at Los Angeles Stadium and with virtually the last kick of the game, Gio Reyna capped a spectacular 4-1 win for the United States against Paraguay on Friday with an exquisite finish to a wonderful team move. This was Pochettino-ball at its finest. “This might be one of the best back-to-front team goals this country and this team has ever put together,” Fox TV analyst Stu Holden said.It might’ve been even better than that.Done in 70 secondsWith the clock on 96 minutes and 10 seconds, the U.S. just had to see out time and ensure a Paraguay team that had already pulled one goal back in the second half didn’t spark a late rally.Over the course of the next 70 seconds, Mauricio Pochettino’s team put together a 26-pass move from left to right, through defense and attack and left Paraguay’s players chasing shadows. Not one Paraguayan got a foot on the ball. Then it was over to Reyna, who went on for a cameo as an 82nd-minute substitute for the outstanding Malik Tillman. Receiving a pass from Alexander Freeman outside the box, Reyna took one touch to control the ball and another to carry it into the area. Then, with the outside of his right boot and with a touch of curl, he swept the shot past Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill into the far corner to send the U.S. supporters wild one last time. And they weren’t the only ones going crazy. As Reyna wheeled away in celebration, hands covering his ears, he was mobbed by teammates, substitutes and even Pochettino, who raced across the field to join in the moment.“There’s not a whole lot of words to describe the feeling,” U.S. captain Tim Ream said after the team’s biggest ever World Cup win. Read More Just like watching Brazil Such was the U.S. control of the ball that it brought back memories of what many believe to be the greatest ever team goal in the World Cup when Brazil’s Carlos Alberto finished off a multi-pass move against Italy in the 1970 final. That game also finished 4-1 and Carlos Alberto’s strike, like Reyna’s, came late, in the 86th minute.A nine-pass move ended with Pele laying the ball off to Carlos Alberto, who drove a low shot into the corner. The stakes were much higher for Brazil, but for the U.S. it was an opening statement performance against a Paraguay team that had one of the best defensive records among the South American teams during qualification. Pochettino’s team already has more goals than the U.S. managed in the entire 2022 tournament where it scored just three and was eliminated at the round of 16.“Congratulations to Team USA on their Big Win, 4-1, over a very good Paraguay team,” President Donald Trump wrote Saturday on his social media site. “Keep it going!” A taste of what’s to comeThe U.S. Men’s National Team went big when it hired Pochettino, the former Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham coach in 2024.There was a run to the Gold Cup final last year and he has not been shy about his ambitions at the World Cup. “Why not us?” has become something of a motto going into the tournament. With extended time to work with the players ahead of the opening game, Pochettino believes the full potential of the team will be seen. “When you only have few days, you know, to reunite and to play, you only select players, but you cannot coach players,” he said Friday. “Only in this type of tournament like the Gold Cup or now the World Cup, because you have preparation, two, three, four weeks, I think that is the only moment that we can coach.”Reyna’s goal was a perfect example of Pochettino’s insistence of concentrating on the team over individuals.“One thing we need to praise is the collective effort,” the coach added. Reyna erases pain of 2022It was a triumphant return for Reyna after controversy in Qatar four years ago for alleged lack of hustle, which nearly got him sent home from that World Cup by then-coach Gregg Berhalter.Pochettino made the bold call to include Reyna in his squad even though he made just four league starts last season for Borussia Mönchengladbach and none after Dec. 19.Reyna also took the opportunity to announce that his wife was pregnant by putting the ball under his shirt and sucking his thumb.“Celebration was for the little one on the way,” he later posted on Instagram. The US has had great goals in the pastFans will debate whether this was the greatest goal by the USMNT. In 1989 Paul Caligiuri struck a long-range volley against Trinidad and Tobago that qualified the U.S. for the World Cup for the first time since 1950.In 1994, the last time America hosted the tournament, Eric Wynalda’s free kick against Switzerland earned the U.S. its first point in the World Cup since 1950.There was also Benny Feilhaber’s volley that won the Gold Cup in 2007.___James Robson is at https://x.com/jamesalanrobson___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 18 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWeston boys tennis completes revenge tour with D3 state championshipCAMBRIDGE — Just a bump in the road.Weston bounced back from a defeat last year to reclaim the Division 3 boys tennis state championship with a 3-2 win over rival Wayland. The top-seeded Wildcats captured a state championship for the seventh time in the past eight years. Weston won all three singles points. Senior Weston Starrett clinched the match at No. 2 singles.“It’s a culmination of four years of hard work to be a senior playing on these courts,” Starrett said. “To win my last match ever as a high school player feels so great.”The win gave Weston its 14th state championship.“We got beaten pretty badly in the finals last year to Bedford, so that gave us inspiration to go back to work,” Weston coach George Conlin said.Weston seniors Peter Chen (No. 1 singles), Starrett and Nate Ko (No. 1 doubles) reached the state final every year of their careers.Wayland, the No. 2 seed, won both doubles matches. The Warriors’ No. 2 pair Arya Nheala and Max Zhuang earned the match’s first point.Revenge, again: Westborough boys tennis wins state championship against Duxbury“Just slamming a ton of balls,” Nheala said. “When it goes in, it’s fun, and if it doesn’t, you still have the next point.” Kiyoshi Niimi and Charlie Haddad ended the match with a three-set win at No. 1 doubles. The loss was Wayland’s first state final defeat in 10 trips. They fell against a Weston team they lost to twice during the regular season. The towns border each other, and many of the players and coaches know each other and play against each other outside of high school.“It brought the two schools together and it drew in a bigger crowd. We all know each other, and there was some friendly smack talk. That’s what makes it interesting and that’s what made me excited to play here, that energy and atmosphere.”One team gets bragging rights until next spring, though. This article originally appeared on MetroWest Daily News: Weston boys tennis claims MIAA D3 state championship over Wayland0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 17 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM“I would say, like five assists a game maybe to start …Already, Lendeborg can see his fit on the Warriors and how he would make an impact from Day 1 if they were to take him with the No. 11 pick. His answer wasn’t about himself. More so, it was about how he can help everybody else. “I would say, like five assists a game maybe to start off,” Lendeborg said Thursday after his Warriors workout. “A lot of defense, fastbreak opportunities for me. Depending on if I’m here or anywhere else, my role will be a lot different. But if I was here, I’ll be more like a secondary ball-handler. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJ Batt, Michigan State AD, is finalist for Kentucky job after 1 yearAlready with a president on his way out, Michigan State University might be in the hunt for a new athletic director after a little more than a year.J Batt reportedly is a finalist for the athletic director job at Kentucky, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Batt was hired away from Georgia Tech by outgoing MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz on June 2, 2025.Guskiewicz, amid turmoil within MSU’s Board of Trustees and upper leadership, last month accepted the president position at Clemson. He does not have a timeline for his departure from East Lansing. The 44-year-old Batt reportedly is Kentucky’s primary target, but ESPN reported a deal has not yet been finalized. Batt’s six-year, $12.6 million-plus contract had a provision in it that cuts his buyout to take another job in half with Guskiewicz no longer being MSU’s president. The buyout drops from $5 million to $2.5 million from now until June 30, 2027. The following year, it decreases to $2 million, then $1.5 million in Year 4 of his deal and $1 million in Year 5. He does not have a buyout in his final year of his contract, which expires June 30, 2031.INCOMING: Pat Fitzgerald lands first 4-star in Michigan State's 2027 classBatt is making $1.85 million in base pay this year, with a $100,000 annual bump scheduled for July 1; he also gets raises in each year of his deal, up to a projected $2.35 million in the final year of the contract (2030-31).Batt met Guskiewicz while the two were at North Carolina, when Batt was a student and soccer player and Guskiewicz was a doctor doing concussion research. Guskiewicz, a native of Pittsburgh suburb Latrobe, eventually returned to Chapel Hill and served as chancellor at UNC from 2019-24. Batt – who grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia – worked at a several schools, including Alabama and Maryland, that all are below the Mason-Dixon Line.In May, Batt said there were two reasons why he left Georgia Tech to join Guskiewicz at MSU, citing “alignment” and their previous relationship. The two were working closely together to create both a new Spartan Ventures fundraising arm for the athletic department and to create a new district around Spartan Stadium. Batt also said in May that they were beginning initial planning phases for upgrades to the football stadium, which were slated to cost around $500 million and be completed in 2029.Batt is MSU’s 21st athletic director and replaced Alan Haller, who was fired by Guskiewicz on May 1, 2025. Batt is the school’s first athletic director who was hired outside of MSU since 1995 (Merritt Norvell).Haller on Friday told WILX-TV in Lansing that he will join the NFL as its senior director of Collegiate Flag Football Development for women.Contact Chris Solari: csolari@freepress.com. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMChris Redman recalls Super Bowl season, lifelong Ravens bondsChris Redman’s time in Baltimore remains a defining part of his football story, something he reflected on during his conversation on The Lounge with Ryan Mink and Garrett Downing.“I enjoyed winning a Super Bowl my rookie year,” Redman said, reflecting on his early years with the Ravens. He also spoke about the relationships that emerged from that era, which still carry weight decades later.“I met some incredible guys along the way that are lifelong friends of mine,” he said.Redman pointed to names like Brandon Stokley, Tony Banks, Todd Heap, and Brad Jackson as examples of bonds that have lasted long after their playing days in Baltimore ended. While he acknowledged the success of that team, he also admitted the offensive system didn’t always align with his strengths.“It probably wasn’t the best fit as far as an offense for me,” he said, looking back on the early 2000s scheme.Even so, Redman emphasized gratitude for the experience, the city, and the championship foundation that shaped his career. This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Chris Redman reflects on Ravens roots, Super Bowl start0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 17 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJays Lose A Frustrating GameJun 13, 2026; Toronto, Ontario, CAN; Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman (34) throws a pitch against the New York Yankees during the first inning at Rogers Centre. Mandatory Credit: Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images | Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images Yankees 2 Blue Jays 1Let’s talk about the eighth inning, because that’s the one that interests me.Kazuma Okamoto walked on six pitches to start it off.Jesús Sánchez walked on four pitches. Now John decided to pinch run for Sánchez. Seemed weird, as he wasn’t the lead runner. But then Okamoto had a pretty good chance of hitting in the ninth. Personally, thought, I’d have ran for Okamoto or no one, but I guess having Straw running reduced the chance of a double play.Ernie Clement, asked to bunt, and popped it up for an out.I HATE sac bunts. I wish I had the ability to underline things on this site, but I HATE THE SAC BUNT. To me, outs are the most precious thing in baseball, and handing one to the other team is dumb. Add in that Clement isn’t (apparently) good at bunting (well maybe he is, he had 7 last year) and that you just saw two guys walked, the last on four pitches…..I hate bunting after walks. Give the pitcher a chance to walk another. I know Ernie doesn’t tend to walk. But still, he does tend to make good contact. To add to the issue of the bunt, you have rookie Brandon Valenzuela up next. Yes he’s been very good, but he would be in a tough spot. And he was still in a tough spot and he struck out. Might have been a good spot to pinch hit with Kirk? Maybe. I don’t know, Valenzuela’s been one of out best hitters.Valenzuela struck out.Next up is Charles McAdoo is up next. Could, again, pinch hit with Kirk. That would cause a lot of issues in the defensive half of the inning. Tough call. I think I’d have used Kirk for Valenzuela. But I would have used him for McAdoo for sure and dealt with the defensive issues later. McAdoo popped out.Another in a string of missed chances today. Then, in the bottom of the inning Louis Varland comes in and gives up a single to Cody Bellinger and a home run to Paul Goldschmidt. Varland hasn’t giving up a home run this season, until today. And it is the first time Varland has given up more than a run in an outing. The bottom of the ninth was three strikeouts, Giménez, Springer and Lukes. Beyond that, we had 6 hits and 7 walks, so you would think we could score more than one run. Okamoto homered in the third. We had chances:Loaded bases in the second (with two outs). We had runners on second and third, with one out in the fourth. Being fair, McAdoo hit a liner up the middle but Jazz Chisholm made a terrific catch. We had the first two batters walk in the fifth and got a double play (Okamoto) and a strikeout (Jesús Sánchez).A one out single in the sixth, then a double play.A one out bunt single by Giménez (who seemed to jam fingers diving into first. Generally, you should never dive into first, but Giménez may have wanted to avoid a possible tag on the play). But a ground out (Springer) and a strikeout (Lukes) ended that one. And the eighth we talked about. Cam Schlittler is a very good pitcher, who had a bad day, but we should have may him pay (by the way, had you gone to school with that last name when I went to school, you would have had to change it). We did seem to have a good game plan against him, until we got runners on base. 1 for 10 with RISP. Kevin Gausman was terrific. 7 innings, 1 hit (a home run by Jasson Domínguez), 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Tyler Rogers pitched the eighth, getting two quick outs and then had a very soft ground ball roll up the middle and into center field. That’s going to happen to a ground ball pitcher occasionally to a ground ball pitcher. Then a much harder ground ball to put runners on the corners. But McAdoo made a terrific diving play on the next ground ball that looked like it would be another single. Jays of the Day: Gausman (0.31 WPA), Rogers (0.11, though he owes some of that to McAdoo), and Piñango (0.09, for a hit and two walks). Other Award: Varland (-0.41), McAdoo (-0.23, but he had a couple of nice defensive plays), Giménez (-0.15) and Clement (-0.13, some of that on the stupid bunt, but if you are asked to bunt, put it on the ground). Tomorrow we have Patrick Corbin (2-3, 4.55) vs. Will Warren (7-1, 3.41). A win please.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 17 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWe watched Phoenix's U.S. World Cup watch parties erupt in celebrationYou’ve seen the videos by now. Fans packed into bars on Friday night, June 12, or in parks, or stadium watch parties, flinging their beers in the air and hugging strangers. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” or Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA" blaring, inspiring a collective sing-along.The energy built first with a seventh-minute own goal, then with Folarin Balogun’s brace and coming to a crescendo when Gio Reyna tucked a shot into the far corner, punctuating a 4-1 win for the United States over Paraguay — the Americans’ largest victory at a World Cup since 1930.The U.S. plays next in Seattle at noon Friday, June 19, against Australia.Across the country, a nation seemed to fall in love with its team all at once. On Fox, an average of 15.986 million viewers watched the game, peaking at 18.86 million late in the second half. With an additional 8.9 million Spanish-language viewers on Telemundo, total viewership averaged 24.9 million — the most-watched U.S. men's national team game ever, and more than each game of the NBA Finals. And on this occasion, Phoenix was no exception. The night’s biggest watch party was at Tombstone Brewing Company in Arcadia, where the American Outlaws — the national team’s largest supporters club — hosted its event for the opener. Hours before kickoff, fans gathered in their U.S. jerseys and American flags, singing songs in anticipation. For many, this was something of a consolation prize. When FIFA announced, back in 2018, that the U.S. would host this World Cup, many of the 350 members of American Outlaws Phoenix envisioned that they would travel around the country, going to games. And with the U.S. opener in Los Angeles, this game seemed like the perfect opportunity — that is, before ticket prices were revealed. After backlash, FIFA made a small handful of tickets to each game available for $60, but for most fans, the cheapest ticket available for the opener was listed at an astronomical $1,120 — a price in line with tickets to the final of previous tournaments.Jamara Saah, the president of American Outlaws Phoenix, had long been among those planning to attend the U.S. matches — as he did at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar. But when he priced out a trip to Los Angeles for the opener, he discovered that it would cost nearly as much as his trip across the world to Qatar, where he watched seven games in 10 days.“With the pricing, people couldn't afford to go,” Saah said. “And it's very, very frustrating, because for somebody that's been to a couple of World Cups, FIFA has never done this before. That's one of the things that's always been good.”At the same time, FIFA made fewer tickets available to official supporters’ groups, while scattering those fans throughout the upper deck, rather than in their usual congregation behind each goal.“Supporters are always right around the goal,” Saah said. “You put them there to create the atmosphere. But FIFA saw the shining dollar and they decided to chase the money.”But at Tombstone Brewing on Friday night, the upshot of all of this was that the biggest die-hards were in attendance for the watch party, singing their support for the national team throughout.“All the hoopla, once that whistle blows, we're focusing here,” Saah said. “We're gonna support the U.S. no matter what. The World Cup is here. Let's enjoy it.”The American Outlaws’ watch party wasn’t the only joyous congregation across the Valley. In downtown, Crown Public House — a year-round soccer bar — had been pushing its World Cup watch parties for weeks, and the event delivered. With all seats taken an hour before kickoff, fans stood shoulder to shoulder, belting out the national anthem and an impromptu set list of supporters’ songs. When the first goal went in, beers flew through the air. And after the dismantling of Paraguay was complete, fans stood on chairs, singing along to patriotic anthems like Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.”"Phoenix just provides such a special experience when it comes to watching sports," said Anahi Jaramillo, one fan at Crown. "... It's awesome to see this excitement."No matter where the party was, the goal was the same: share in collective joy. And for the American Outlaws, there’s a tangible belief that this month can provide a long-term boost to the sport’s popularity in the U.S.“We can have people show up and it'll be their first time,” Saah said. “And they're gonna get sucked in. They're gonna be like, 'I came to a bar, now what is it like to go to a stadium?' … That's getting more people to go to the stadium and follow U.S. soccer.”This article originally appeared on Arizona Republic: Phoenix watch parties erupt in World Cup celebrations0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 20 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWaukee Northwest beats Valley for second straight girls soccer titleAMES — There is no better way to go out than on top.And that’s exactly what Waukee Northwest coach Tony Gabriel got to do, when his No. 1-seeded Wolves beat No. 2 Valley, 2-1, in the Class 3A championship game June 13 at the Iowa high school girls soccer state tournament.Northwest (14-0-3) finished the season without a loss and in the process became the first team to repeat in Iowa’s largest class since the state added a third division in 2011.So, while Gabriel wants all the credit to go to the girls, this title-winning moment felt unique.“This is my last game … so it feels a little bit different because it’s on my way out,” Gabriel said after the victory. “The kids were fantastic all year long. Never at any point did we put pressure on ourselves about repeating. They wanted it.“And to be the No. 1 team all year, that’s not easy. The semifinal had four teams that have all won a championship in the last five years, that’s how brutal this class is. To come out on top, it’s a symbol of the heart and determination that these girls had, and I’m just proud of them.”With the two conference foes meeting for the second time this season, Northwest and Valley fell into a rhythm on the field. The Tigers picked up the first shot on goal — off the foot of Sabrina Rogers — and then the Wolves responded with a shot of their own, which sailed over the top of the net.Three yellow cards — two against Northwest, one against Valley — were handed out in the final 20 minutes of the first half, and that’s when all the scoring happened as well. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the opening frame, Northwest sophomore Natalie Elliott sent a cross pass in front of the net, and Cora Sundet came in from the left side to knock it into the back of the net.Less than a minute-and-a-half later, there was a bit of déjà vu, and Elliott connected with Sundet in the same fashion, except this time Sundet headed the ball in to put the Wolves up, 2-0.The Tigers wasted little time cutting into Northwest’s lead. Following a free kick, Bryn Kenworthy headed in Valley’s first goal of the game, cutting Northwest’s advantage to 2-1, which held through the end of the first half.“We just wanted to find success on the outside,” said Gabriel, reflecting on seeing his players’ hard work pay off. “And getting around (Valley’s) back line that way, and being able to do it consecutively, it was poetic.”With two goals on the board — but only a one-point advantage — Northwest clung to that lead for the final 40 minutes of the game. The Tigers picked up some opportunities in the second half, but for the most part the Wolves remained in control. The ball bounced up-and-down the field in the final few minutes of the game, with the rain picking up and Valley fighting to get an evener on the board. But the minutes ticked away, and the Tigers struggled to keep the ball on Northwest’s side of the field.Even with the lead, the Wolves never stopped battling.“They’re realistic,” Gabriel said of his team’s ability to remain focused after Valley’s goal. “That came from a set piece of a silly foul that we gave up, and we knew that we wanted to limit their set pieces, because that’s where they’re dangerous. It was a lesson learned, and we were smarter about how we played.”The Wolves took down the Tigers (17-3-1) for the second time this season, beating them 2-1 in the regular season as well. And with the amount of youth of Northwest’s squad — 13 returners on the roster — there is a chance that the Wolves’ dominance carries into next season.“I’m gonna sit back and enjoy this,” said Gabriel. “The future is bright for this program. The youth and the ninth-graders that stepped up this year, they’re fun to watch. To see them be so impactful in their first year of high school has been great … and it’s fun to be around.”Alyssa Hertel is the college sports recruiting reporter for the Des Moines Register. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Rams are clearly in a Super Bowl window right now. The team has one of the most loaded rosters in the NFL and should be a force to be reckoned with, even in the tough NFC West. Naturally, because the Rams play in LA and feature one of the best rosters, the team is frequently named as a landing spot for the top free agents. That's been the case this offseason, and there's a very talented free agent weapon who should be signing with a team soon. Rams named among best landing spots for Stefon DiggsJordan Dajani of CBS Sports recently picked out the best landing spots for Stefon Diggs, and of course, the Rams made the list. At first glance, it seems like the Rams are set at receiver with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. However, Adams is 33 and just turned in his worst season in a decade. There's also not much to get excited about behind that duo, so it makes sense to add another piece. Regarding Rams and Diggs, Dajani offered the following: The Rams had the No. 1 offense in the league last year with MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford and star wideouts Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. Despite that talented room, the Rams showed interest in A.J. Brown earlier this offseason, so they could still be in the market for a new weapon. Diggs isn't the same player as Brown, but he could join a loaded offense and chase a ring with the Rams. Maybe Aaron Donald comes out of retirement to do the same.As Dajani mentioned, the Rams already had the No. 1 offense with just Nacua and Adams, so adding a player like Diggs could truly get the team over the top. In 2025, Diggs played in 17 games for the New England Patriots and helped lead the team to the Super Bowl. Diggs caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns and even received some Comeback Player of the Year votes. In Los Angeles, Diggs would join Nacua and Adams to form possibly the best WR trio in the league. It would also be Diggs' best shot at landing a ring, which is something he's failed to do so far. Do Rams need Diggs? When you look at the Rams' depth chart, you start to realize that receiver may actually be a need after all. In 2025, no wide receiver other than Nacua or Adams had more than 303 yards, and the team didn't do much to add to the room. Rookie sixth-rounder C.J. Daniels is the only notable addition so far, and while he looks promising, you probably don't want to rely on him immediately. Adding Diggs would take some pressure off Nacua and Adams and also give Stafford another reliable target. Now that Diggs' legal troubles seem to be over, I think he makes perfect sense in Los Angeles. He has the big personality that would seemingly fit in, and he could finally get that elusive ring. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDo The Milwaukee Bucks Benefit From The Celtics Interest In Giannis?Trade talk revolving around the Boston Celtics and Giannis Antetokounmpo has reached a fever pitch in the past few days. The internet has been awash with multiple reports linking the Celtics to significant interest in the 2021 NBA champion, and the common consensus is that any deal for Giannis would likely mean Jaylen Brown's tenure with the Celtics will come to an end.During a recent appearance on the "Rich And Ken With Ted Johnson" show for WEEI, Sports Illustrated's John Karalis detailed the current reporting surrounding Boston and the Milwaukee Bucks, while also sharing his thoughts on the rumors. Karalis also noted how the Bucks could be using the Celtics' reported interest to try to increase the overall market value for Giannis. After all, if the Celtics are reportedly willing to part with Brown, maybe that could increase what teams such as the Miami Heat are willing to trade in order to get a deal over the line. You can watch the full interview by clicking on the embedded video above.Watch or listen to the "Celtics Chronicle" podcast on:YouTube: https://bit.ly/3QnlPcSSpotify: https://bit.ly/40JRevfApple: https://apple.co/45sAUBGSubstack: https://bit.ly/3WoA0CfThis article originally appeared on Celtics Wire: Do The Bucks Benefit From The Celtics Interest In Giannis?0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 16 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWas this offside? Fifa under pressure to release VAR imagesWas Switzerland's Remo Freuler offside before he was brought down by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada? It is the question that remains unanswered. And it led to a penalty, converted by Breel Embolo, as the teams drew 1-1 in Saturday's World Cup Group B match in Santa Clara. Before the tournament, Fifa put a lot of stock in its new, enhanced semi-automated offside system.World football's governing body scanned every player at the World Cup to create unique, lifelike avatars of each one.It was supposed to provide the most accurate illustration of offside decisions we have ever seen.Yet we are still waiting for the evidence to prove that Freuler was indeed onside."We all think it here [that it was offside]," Gary Neville said on ITV."Everybody at home thinks it. Fifa are the host broadcaster and they have the semi-automatic decision that they can show us."There is a massive question over that because it is offside in my eyes until they prove to me different."If there is one thing that is guaranteed to create doubt it is delay. It creates a vacuum that feeds conspiracy theories. It might give the impression Fifa is hiding something. We have seen the avatar animations in action in the opening games, and not just for overturned decisions. We saw an example on Friday, with Tani Oluwaseyi flagged offside before Bosnia-Herzegovina goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj clattered into the Canada striker. Fifa provided the semi-automated animation, even though the video assistant referee (VAR) had not got involved. It has been the same in decisions which are not close. In Saturday's later game, Fifa quickly showed the graphic for Morocco goalscorer Ismael Saibari against Brazil even though there was no real question about him being in an offside position.Fifa has largely been very quick with offside decisions at this tournament. With an audio alert sent to an assistant when a player is more than 10cm offside there is no need for a delayed offside flag. The speed of this technology means the more obvious decisions are made quickly - but this was a tight one and appeared to be under the 10cm limit.'Prove to us that it's offside'BBC Sport has attempted to get clarification from Fifa on the situation but as yet it has not been forthcoming. To add "It's like a dictatorship, this," added Neville. "The idea that they hold this evidence internally and don't show fans of countries who are playing in tournaments is absolutely ridiculous."To not show the evidence of an offside - prove to us that it's offside! Show it straight away. Why not have transparency?"In the domestic leagues which use semi-automated offside, they can fall back to drawing lines. That is because the semi-automated technology is not flawless. It can be impacted by many things, such as players being close together or even something as random as ticker tape on the pitch. If the more advanced technology fails, VAR can revert to drawing lines - and the supporters get the evidence they demand. As yet, that has not been provided for the Switzerland penalty.Play BBC Sport's new World Cup predictor gameWorld Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 18 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSamad Taylor’s first career home run, 5 total by Padres overpower OriolesSan Diego Padres left fielder Samad Taylor (0) celebrates with teammates after hitting a two run home run during the first inning at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It was another quick start for the Padres, as with a four-run first inning and a season-high five home runs, San Diego was able to outpace and out-slug the Baltimore Orioles in a 8-3 win on Saturday evening at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.Samad Taylor hit his first career home run as part of a 3-for-5, three RBI afternoon for the Padres (36-33), backing up a five inning start by Randy Vásquez. Pete Alonso homered for the second game in a row and had a double for two RBI for Baltimore (34-38), who had a winning streak halted at three for the fifth time.San Diego jumped all over rookie starter Trey Gibson from the get-go, as Jackson Merrill and Taylor each hit two-run home runs that cashed in Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts after drawing walks. Merrill has homered in four straight road series and 11 of his last 12 RBI have come as a visitor.Taylor’s home run was his first in the Majors, a 407-foot blast to straight away center on a 2-2 sweeper that hung over the heart of the plate. More importantly, it came with two outs and made it the Brown and Gold’s highest scoring opening inning of the season. But Baltimore was able to claw back a pair their first time up, as Pete Alonso hit a two-out home run and Leody Taveras hit a triple that scored Samuel Basallo after a walk. Both pitchers settled in after the rocky start, and the only RISP situation until the fifth inning came in the Orioles third, when a wild pitch on a third strike to Taveras got between Freddy Fermin’s legs and ricocheted away off the brick back wall to put men on first and second. But Vásquez was able to induce a flyout. Then in the fifth Merrill drew a leadoff walk and then Manny Machado was able to beat out a potential double-play, getting there in time after the Padres challenged the outs at both bases. Then Bogaerts took a 93.5 mph sinker off the earhole of his helmet, which got the Padres dugout hot and ended Gibson’s afternoon.Gavin Sheets then drew a walk off reliever Keegan Akin to load the bases, and Taylor blooped a fly to shallow right for an RBI single. Nick Solak, who was brought up from Triple-A El Paso as part of a roster move announced earlier in the day, followed up by hitting a sacrifice fly that scored Bogaerts.Vásquez was steady after the early two-spot, finishing with six hits allowed and five strikeouts to go with two walks. It was his sixth win, which snapped a string of four consecutive starts without securing one.Sheets added a solo home run in the seventh inning for his 11th of the year, which was his third hit of the series that has seen him drive in a trio of runs.Fermin left the game before the bottom of the sixth, as while Yuki Matsui was warming up a spiked pitch bounced up and caught the catcher on the side of the head. He was replaced by Rodolfo Durán, the second defensive change ahead of the inning as Sung-Mun Song replaced Bogaerts.Durán homered in his only at-bat of the game in the eighth for his second long ball, then Machado crunched his 12th of the season in the ninth. The last time San Diego hit five home runs was on May 10, 2025 at Colorado.Yuki Matsui allowed a hit and struck out a pair in the sixth, then Bradgley Rodriguez allowed a walk and an Alonso RBI double in the seventh. Jason Adam allowed a hit in the eighth, and Ron Marinaccio was ejected after hitting Gunnar Henderson with a pitch — Stammen was also given the boot for arguing with the umpires afterward. Adrian Morejon got the final out of the game.Gibson was charged with six runs in 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and five walks to go with seven strikeouts in his fourth MLB start and took his second loss. Prior to the game Miguel Andujar was placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain, retroactive to June 11, and selected the contract of Solak. In 54 games with the Chihuahuas, where he was listed as a first baseman, Solak was slashing .333/.412/.512 with nine home runs and a team-high 40 RBI.The series finale will see Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.33 ERA) face Orioles left-hander Trevor Rogers (3-6, 6.15 ERA), who has pitched through the fifth inning in each of his past three starts. First pitch from Oriole Park at Camden Yards is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. PT.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 16 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDodgers star Yoshinobu Yamamoto loses perfect game on Mookie Betts error in 8th inning, then loses no-hitter in 9thYoshinobu Yamamoto was an inning from his first MLB no-hitter, and an inning-plus from the 25th perfect game in MLB history. The Dodgers right-hander lost a perfect game bid against the Chicago White Sox in the eighth inning when shortstop Mookie Betts booted an easy ground ball from Chase Meidroth. Second baseman Santiago Espinal had a chance to make a play off the deflection, but couldn’t get the throw off. That error not only ended the perfect game big, it also broke a string of 45 straight batters retired by Yamamoto going back to his last start. That is tied with former White Sox ace Mark Buehrle for the second-longest such streak in MLB history, behind only Yusmeiro Petit’s 46 straight in 2014.Yamamoto recovered with a Jacob Gonzalez groundout to end the eighth, at which point he was at 103 pitches and still chasing a no-hitter. That bid lasted two more pitches, as White Sox center-fielder Tristan Peters hammered a homer to right field to take away both the no-no and the shutout. The Dodgers kept Yamamoto in the game at 105 pitches and had him get one more out on an Edgar Quero fly ball, then pulled him for Alex Vesia. He went a full three times through the White Sox order, allowing only a homer and a runner that reached on an error. This article will be updated with more information.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 16 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMUFC White House weigh-in results: 2 title fights set#UFCWhiteHouse main event is official!@Topuriailia weighs in at 155lbs 💪 [ SUN JUN 14 | LIVE on @ParamountPlus | Title Fights Presented by @Cryptocom ] pic.twitter.com/NkIs2vyo9W— UFC (@ufc) June 13, 2026 The Ultimate Fighting Championship's historic card is officially set for Sunday following the UFC White House weigh-ins. Headlining the first professional sporting event to take place on the White House lawn is a lightweight title unification fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, while Alex Pereira vs. Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight championship serves as the co-main event. All four fighters successfully made the championship weight without any issue. Now, all seven bouts on the monumental event are officially moving forward after no fighters on the card had issues on the scale. Additionally, Diego Lopes came back a second time to make lightweight championship weight of 154 pounds to qualify as a replacement for the headliner if disaster struck. The undefeated Topuria (17-0) enters the fight having torn through the UFC's featherweight and lightweight divisions since debuting in 2020. "El Matador" is coming off knockouts of Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira, cementing himself as one of the most dangerous and exciting mixed martial artists. Just 29 years of age, the Spanish fighter weighed 155 pounds on the dot for his first fight of 2026. Looking to cause a sizable upset is Gaethje (27-5). The American holds the interim lightweight championship, having battered Paddy Pimblett over five rounds to earn the title earlier this year while Topuria was out. "The Highlight" has won four of his last five fights, with a last-second knockout to Max Holloway in their iconic "BMF" title fight being his lone defeat. The American is 37, so this is realistically his last chance at seizing undisputed UFC gold. Gaethje stepped on the scale at 155 pounds exactly. Meanwhile, former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Pereira (13-3) moves up to heavyweight for an interim title fight against Ciryl Gane, whose illegal eye pokes injured champion Tom Aspinall last year. "Poatan" will look to claim a UFC title in a historic three divisions, while Gane (13-2) will look to gain interim titleholder status for a second time. The Brazilian weighed 251 pounds for his move to heavyweight, while "Bon Gamin" came in at 248 pounds. UFC White House will stream in its entirety on Paramount+ on Sunday, with the card starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.UFC White House weigh-in results:Ilia Topuria (155) vs. Justin Gaethje (155)Alex Pereira (251) vs. Ciryl Gane (248)Sean O'Malley (135.5) vs. Aiemann Zahabi (135)Josh Hokit (231) vs. Derrick Lewis (265)Mauricio Ruffy (155) vs. Michael Chandler (156)Bo Nickal (186) vs. Kyle Daukaus (186)Diego Lopes (146) vs. Steve Garcia (146)0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 15 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMYoshinobu Yamamoto Just Misses Out on No-Hitter vs. White SoxLos Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto was dominant on Saturday, June 13th, pitching 7.2 perfect innings and eight no-hit innings as well. Yamamoto has been trending upward on the mound, and after Saturday, it is safe to say that he is very close to his best, looking like his 2025 postseason self. The right-hander ended the night with 8.1 innings under his belt, allowing one hit, a home run for his only earned run, and notching seven strikeouts. He only pitched 109 pitches, meaning that he should not be compromised for his next start with an absurd pitch count. Jun 13, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto (18) throws the ball against the Chicago White Sox during the fifth inning at Rate Field. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesOut of his pitches, 74 were strikes, showing his ability to command the ball. Since he does not reach those crazy speeds or have outlier movement on his pitches, Yamamoto relies on his command and mix to pitch at an elite level. Both of those aspects of his game were totally in tune on Saturday, showing just how locked-in he can be as a pitcher. How did Yamamoto lose his perfect game and no-hitter?Jun 13, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto (18) throws the ball against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning at Rate Field. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn ImagesYamamoto was perfect through seven full innings and battled to get two outs in the eighth inning. On his third batter, he generated a soft grounder that looked like another routine out until Mookie Betts failed to field it, leading to an error on the play. His no-hitter is still on. pic.twitter.com/l38maPfcm5— Nelson Espinal (@nelson__espinal) June 13, 2026His perfect game was gone, but the no-hitter was intact after eight full innings. However, on the second pitch of the ninth inning, he gave up a home run, his first hit of the game, which cost him his no-hitter. On the second pitch of the ninth inning, Yamamoto loses his no-hitter. It does not take away from a great effort for the Dodgers' ace, who is looking dominant like he was in the 2025 postseason. pic.twitter.com/dWZXHCfBYL— Nelson Espinal (@nelson__espinal) June 13, 2026Manager Dave Roberts kept Yamamoto in the game to get one more out before Alex Vesia came in and got the last two outs. His ERA dropped to 2.52 after his start, and with the dominant outing, Yamamoto enters the Cy Young conversation, and he should be a player in the race as long as he maintains this level. For the rest of the MLB, it was a warning that Yamamoto is back to his best.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 15 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhat UNC’s players said after CWS win over Ole MissSeveral of North Carolina’s players spoke to the media after the Tar Heels defeated Ole Miss 6-2 on the opening day of the College World Series. The Tar Heels were powered by strong pitching performances from Jason DeCaro, who struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings, and Caden Glauber, who recorded two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Catcher Colin Hynek’s three-run homer in the eighth inning sealed the win for North Carolina. Here’s what Jason DeCaro, Owen Hull and Colin Hynek had to say after the game.Owen, tell me about the blast. What were you looking for? And was there kind of a tension there going into that at that because you guys couldn’t get anything going?OWEN HULL: First of all, that pitch was really good. The whole Ole Miss team is very good. So we came in with a game plan. And, yeah, we tried to execute every at-bat. I was sitting on heater. I got one up in the zone, so I put a good swing on it. Credit to Jason here, great pitcher. I’m really happy to have him on our team. And he did really well. And then Colin with the three-run blast was pretty cool. I was very excited for him.Colin, after the 3-0 hit given up by Caden, walking off the mound, you met him halfway. Was there a message to Caden about just calming down, big moment for a high school senior, really, but now a freshman, heading into that ninth inning?COLIN HYNEK: Coming off the mound, I just told him just simply good job, did a good job of bouncing back, getting the next guy and getting us in the dugout. And then just going into the ninth inning, was just you know, go out there and be yourself. He’s one of the best pitchers in the country. So there’s no reason to not act like it for him. So anytime he’s on the mound, we trust him. As long as he’s himself, he’s pretty much unhittable.Jason, that’s two starts in Omaha with one run each. Did you take anything from your Virginia start two years ago into tonight? And if so, what was that?JASON DECARO: Yeah, absolutely. Just trying to slow myself down a little bit. We talked earlier in the week about how we’re taking it one pitch at a time. I feel like I did a pretty good job with that. And then credit to the offense finding a way in the end there. Just happy to pull this one out.Owen and Colin, early on you guys were able to put the pressure on with walks. Did you guys feel that any time in the game you were going to break it open with the bats?OWEN HULL: 100 percent, yeah, we’ve got a really special offense, and we’re going to keep being gritty. And, yeah, we got his pitch count up pretty high. And that’s what our goal was. He’s a really good pitcher. He’s going to go pretty high in the draft this year. I expect for him to. And, yeah, we knew we would get to him eventually and we just that. COLIN HYNEK: Yeah, like what Owen said, we know that we’re never out of the fight especially with our pitching staff. That’s two games in a row that we’ve been pretty slow offensively until the end of the game and they’ve just held it in there until we could finally break through. I thought we were putting together some solid at-bats, like Coach Forbes said, just couldn’t get the big hit. Kind of like he says, we don’t look at the scoreboard, we just keep playing, stick to our process and see where we’re at at the end of the game. There’s a third H that had a big moment tonight, couple big moments with Tyler Howe. And it feels like maybe he probably gets overlooked a little bit here. But he started the rally in the seventh and then played a key part in the eighth inning rally as well. Talk to me about his development over the course of the year because he’s had his ups and downs as a freshman but he’s had some big-time at-bats?OWEN HULL: Yeah, he’s very mature for a freshman. I’m really happy to have him out in outfield. He’s a great player but he is also a great person off the field, and it’s really cool to be around him in the locker room as well. COLIN HYNEK: Again, to echo Owen, the kid works his butt off. Multiple times in the last couple weeks he’s been working on some things with Coach Wierz. And he’s the first guy back in the cage getting some extra work in, whether that be off the tee, whether it’s a drill that he’s trying to implement into his routine. So it’s not really a shock that the kid’s come up big. You look at some big other moments this year, that kid just kind of has a knack for it.After Jason got out in the sixth inning he gave that big fist pump coming off the mound, let’s go. It looked like you guys had kind of a meeting in the dugout. At least that’s what it showed on the TV. What was discussed in the meeting obviously it led to a good result because he hit the home run the next at-bat?OWEN HULL: That’s a secret. But we got our pitcher’s back. He’s working out there today and we knew that we had to get his back. COLIN HYNEK: Yeah, I guess it’s a secret. All things considered, Caden probably doesn’t need three runs of insurance there in the ninth, but what was going through your head in the eighth inning at-bat, putting three runs up on the board?COLIN HYNEK: Going into the at-bat, they took the visit, and Coach Wierz was just letting me know from the dugout, obviously we’ve got our scouting reports. The guy has a change-up that he likes to throw. It’s a pretty good pitch. So couldn’t play with him down at the bottom of the zone, so I was trying to see him up. And when I saw the change-up start up just got a swing off. And, yeah, seeing it go over is a pretty cool feeling to homer here. But, yeah, just stuck to my plan.Jason, after a couple of starts after against Virginia Tech and ECU that maybe weren’t your favorite, that’s 17 strikeouts compared to just seven hits in your last two outings. What’s gone right for you? Do you like playing on the big stage, or what have you found recently that’s being working?JASON DECARO: Just being a better job executing when I’m ahead in the count. I feel like even in those starts, I was ahead a lot and just didn’t make my pitch enough. Got punished for that. But that’s been a big focus for me over the last three or four weeks. And I feel like definitely doing a better job with that.Follow us @TarHeelsWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of North Carolina Tar Heels news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Tar Heels Wire: UNC Baseball: What the players said after CWS opener0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 18 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAlabama baseball's Tyler Fay on the pitch that was missing vs OklahomaOMAHA, Neb. − Alabama baseball pitcher Tyler Fay certainly wasn't at his best on Saturday in a 9-0 loss to Oklahoma in the College World Series. The reason? A pitch he relies on heavily was lost on him."It was a disappointing outing for me. I didn't really have the slider working at all," Fay said. "They had a lot of really tough at-bats early in the game and got some momentum built up. They did a good job of hitting everything."HIGHLIGHTS: Alabama baseball blanked by OU at College World SeriesGOODBREAD: Pat McAfee put Rocco's on blast, but business will boom onFay allowed five earned runs over six innings against the Sooners and struggled to retire the first batter in the opening innings. OU opened a 2-0 lead in the first and only added to it from there. But for Fay, the absence of his slider was a mystery, considering it was sharp in his pregame bullpen session."In the pen pregame, everything was really working. I was dotting everything, keeping everything low, the slider felt good there," he said. "When I got to the mound, everything felt good except the slider."The biggest blow for Fay came in the sixth, when he plunked the leadoff batter and then allowed a two-run home run to Deiten LaChance that roared into the left-field seats, extending OU's lead to 5-0. Fay finished the inning but was done for the day thereafter, and it could well be the last appearance of the season for the fourth-year junior. With the loss, Alabama (42-20) fell into the CWS loser's bracket and now faces an elimination game against either Texas or Georgia on Monday at 1 p.m. CT. UA coach Rob Vaughn did not indicate who will start the game for the Crimson Tide, but it is expected to be Myles Upchurch or Zane Adams.Reach Tuscaloosa News columnist Chase Goodbread at cgoodbread@gannett.com. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCowboys legend issues warning to Jerry Jones about another failed rebuildCowboys legend issues warning to Jerry Jones about another failed rebuild originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.It has now been 30 years since the Dallas Cowboys last hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. Every offseason since 1995, owner Jerry Jones has masterfully sold hope every single offseason, using "all-in" speeches, bold promises, and flashy red-carpet sound bites to keep fans invested. Before the 2024 season, he claimed the management was "all-in." Instead, the team signed no major free agents, finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs. The situation worsened before the 2025 season.Following a contract dispute, the 83-year-old traded star pass-rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft picks.Losing Parsons collapsed the defense and the Cowboys slumped to a 7-9-1 record. After missing the postseason again, Jones publicly admitted that management's roster-building philosophy had played a "big role" in extending the franchise's 30-year Super Bowl drought. Now, the 2026 NFL Draft has provided a new source of hope. By selecting consensus All-American safety Caleb Downs at No. 11 overall, the Cowboys have injected a dynamic playmaker into their secondary. While fan optimism is slowly creeping back into AT&T Stadium, nearly nobody in the national media is ready to call this retooling roster a legitimate title contender -- not even Cowboys all-time great Emmitt Smith, who was the 1993 NFL MVP and won three Super Bowls. In a recent appearance on "The Ross Tucker Podcast," Smith delivered a blunt message about what's at stake. He argued that another misfire on the Parsons trade would cost the franchise more than wins on the field. "If we don't capitalize on the Parsons trade, then I believe the Dallas Cowboys and the family could be losing fans for a lifetime," Smith said. "Those fans will feel like they have been taken advantage of. And that's when you will see an effect on ticket sales, suites, merchandising going down."“If we don't, then I believe the Dallas Cowboys and the family could be losing fans for a lifetime.”@EmmittSmith22 strongly feels that Dallas NEEDS to capitalize on the return from the Micah Parsons trade: pic.twitter.com/b2N8GW5Nf9— Ross Tucker Podcast (@RossTuckerPod) June 10, 2026Smith’s fear is justified because Jones has not stopped making promises that now feel like empty words. Despite a 7-9-1 record and one of the league's worst defenses, Jones insisted in January that Dallas can compete for a title in 2026. And, the community has been hearing this same narrative for the last 30 years. Like Smith, the majority of the community believes Jones is genuinely running out of time and another big swing-and-miss could push them to an absolute breaking point.More NFL news:No excuses for Dallas in 2026 with the second-best wide receiver group in the entire NFLPatrick Mahomes' $500 million deal puts the ball in Dak Prescott's court to help CowboysCowboys may have just answered their biggest backfield question without even tryingMaxx Crosby’s comments show there’s no chance he’s getting traded to the BearsRest of the NFC East is handing Cowboys a golden opportunity they can't afford to waste0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 13 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTough outing for Gibson sinks Orioles in 9-3 loss to PadresJun 13, 2026; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo (29) and pitcher Trey Gibson (43) meet on the mound during the first inning against the San Diego Padres at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Mandatory Credit: James A. Pittman-Imagn Images | James A. Pittman-Imagn Images Occasionally there are games where a bad first inning is enough to make you consider doing something other than watching Orioles baseball that day. That was the case here as the Padres scored four runs before the O’s even got a chance to hit and eventually prevailed to a 9-3 win on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore. It was a mixed day for rookie Trey Gibson. As mentioned, the first inning was brutal. He gave up two walks in the opening frame, and each one was shortly followed by a home run to get the visiting Padres out to an early four-run lead.Gibson found his footing a bit after that, working three straight scoreless innings from the second through the fourth. But the fifth inning was trouble once again. He walked the lead-off hitter. Later, he hit Xander Bogaerts in the head with a wayward sinker. Craig Albernaz pulled him at that point, but his line wasn’t quite wrapped up as Keegan Akin came on and allowed both inherited runners to cross the plate. When it was all said and done, Gibson tossed 4.1 innings and allowed six runs on three hits, five walks, and seven strikeouts. Missing bats had been an issue for him coming into this game. His 14.7% whiff rate was near the bottom of the league. He more than doubled that to 30% in this game, which was shown in the box score with the seven strikeouts. What he seemed to sacrifice to get there was control of the strike zone. The sky high walks and the bean ball to Bogaerts speak for themselves. This is the sort of game that a rookie is going to have. He’s still figuring things out. The whiffs and strikeouts are good. The home runs and walks are bad. Sometimes you have to suffer through the growing pains and hope it all pans out on the other side. The bullpen was not much better. Akin only recorded those two outs in the fifth inning, and while he wasn’t charged with any runs of his own, he failed to prevent any of Gibson’s runners from pushing the lead even higher. At least Albert Suárez was able to provide length. He worked the final four innings, but also allowed three solo home runs. The Orioles lineup showed some early life. They responded in the bottom of the first inning with two runs. Pete Alonso hit a two-out homer. Samuel Basallo followed with a walk and then came in to score on a Leody Taveras triple to right field. Maybe we had a game on our hands after all?Not really. The Orioles had runners on base throughout the afternoon. But time and time again they failed to cash in on them. As a group the team went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base. Alonso and Blaze Alexander were the two most active on offense. They each had three hits. Alonso had the homer, a double, and two RBI. Alexander’s three knocks were all singles, but he added a stolen base on top of it all. Tyler O’Neill and Coby Mayo both had a double each, but were stranded.Something to watch coming out of this game relates to Bogaerts being hit. The Padres, understandably, weren’t happy about it. Gibson had been wild all day, so there is no question about it being an accident. But it’s dangerous to pitch up in that area. If you don’t know where the ball’s going to that degree, you probably shouldn’t be in the game. Albernaz quickly pulling him was, at least in part, an acknowledgment of that.San Diego was intent on retaliating, which probably would have been fine if they succeeded the first time. Bradgley Rodriguez went up and in on Gunnar Henderson twice in the seventh inning, but missed both times. Henderson eventually walked. Then, in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Ron Marinaccio successfully nailed Henderson in the ribs with a 94 mph fastball. That got the Orioles’ hackles up. Henderson gestured something about trying “three times” towards Marinaccio. The umpires quickly got together and decided the San Diego pitcher was gone. His ejection riled up the skipper Craig Stammen, who clearly wanted to be thrown out himself at the point, when there was essentially nothing to lose. Eventually, he got his wish and was sent to the showers about five minutes before the rest of his team.Padres reliever Adrian Morejon came on to throw two pitches and get the final out without any additional fireworks. But it’s possible that more is brewing. The Padres got to throw at Henderson twice on purpose. The Orioles had only thrown at Bogaerts once, and it was by accident. Do they now get to throw at Manny Machado or Jackson Merrill in the series finale now? Hopefully not. The Padres are probably looking at suspensions for someone coming out of this. Intentional hit by pitches usually come with consequences. The best comeback from the Orioles perspective would be to go out and win the series on Sunday. The Padres aren’t some division (or even league) rival. Just beat them and wrap this series up on a positive note.Trevor Rogers (3-6, 6.15 ERA) will be on the bump as he continues to keep his encouraging June going. The lefty has a 3.18 ERA this month. He will be opposed by Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.33 ERA). Buehler has also been good recently, allowing just two runs over his last 10.2 innings. First pitch is set for 1:05 from Camden Yards.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 13 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMunster’s Tallamraju wins girls state tennis singles, Jasper reigns again in doublesINDIANAPOLIS — Jasper’s stranglehold on the IHSAA girls state doubles tennis championship was tightened on Saturday. For the fourth year in a row, the Wildcats won the state doubles title. The duo of senior Adaysha Smiley and sophomore Stella Knies were the latest pair to earn real estate in high school championship lore. They defeated Carmel seniors Madison Littell and Gabby Hall in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), at Park Tudor to complete the four-peat.“Obviously, we could’ve easily let go and be negative, but we just made sure to have each other’s backs,” Smiley said. “Just making sure that we really took deep breathes every point, not taking anything for granted, not let ups because they were undefeated. They were very good …“We were good at the net. We played our game. We didn’t stray away from that, so I think that’s also the biggest thing. Just playing Jasper doubles how we’re doing, it works out.”Smiley’s jubilation was reminiscent of last season’s win. As a junior, she was paired with then-senior Reese Mundy. They clinched the team’s third gold medal in a row before Knies, a sophomore, was plugged into the vacant role this season.“I mean obviously, I was hoping to play this spot,” Knies said. “Practiced a lot of doubles over the winter, not being in the lineup last year … I just kept going for it.”Knies and Smiley opened their state title quest with a tough battle against Silver Creek in the state semifinals on Saturday morning. They secured the first set, 6-2, before they lost the second set, 5-7. They closed out the match with a 6-1 win in set three. That clash turned out to be a prelude to what the Wildcats orchestrated in the state finals in the afternoon. They were the aggressors against a talented Carmel pair and didn’t panic when things went astray. “We felt pretty confident that we could win this morning’s match which almost didn’t go that way, but we prepared all week with different sets and we stuck to it,” said Jasper coach Scott Yarbrough. “We stayed with this I Formation which is on the one side. We didn’t go away from it, even though it wasn’t always working and we wanted to stick with that and really stuck to the gameplan really well.“Poaching when we were supposed to and I felt down the stretch we were the aggressor. I felt we got to the net, put more balls away than they did.”Jasper’s four-peat was started at Park Tudor in 2023. On Saturday, the Wildcats returned to their state title stomping grounds and laid claim to their dominance for the fourth straight time. It was a reminder to everyone watching that they are the team to beat in doubles.Smiley and Knies finished the season with a 17-2 regular season record and a 9-0 run in the postseason as a doubles team. They carried the torch for Jasper’s state dynasty.“The way we’re coaching doubles works,” Yarbrough said. “You’ve got players that listen and are coachable. You’ve got kids that buy into your system. You’ve got coaches that believe in their kids.”Munster’s Priyanka Tallamraju reigns supreme in singles actionTallmraju took a deep breath and tapped her racket on the fence before she walked up to the baseline to serve in set three of the singles state finals against Brebeuf Jesuit junior Chloe Wendowski. She had won set one, 6-0, before she plummeted to a 0-6 loss in set two. By set three, she fought through exhaustion and found a second wave. She was zeroed in on a state title. The sophomore dug down deep and triumphed in set three, 6-0.Tallamraju prevailed over Wendowski in three sets and became the first singles champion from Munster since 2009.“The second set was tough, she just really stepped it up,” Tallamraju said. “In the third set, I just came with the energy … Last year, I got (beat) by an amazing player, but I really wanted this win, so I had put all my effort in, and I did that.”Tallamraju’s resilience in set three showed how iron-willed she is. She is a motivated tennis player with a drive fit for a champion. Her work ethic is methodical. She’s aware of the work and mindset needed to play at a high level. She lost just one match in the last two years. Her last defeat was at last year’s state semifinals to eventual champion Samaya Smith from Warren Central. Her freshman demise powered her comeback in year two of high school. She orchestrated a 16-0 regular season record and 10-0 postseason run as a sophomore. Her winning edge didn’t waver when pitted against adversity in the state championship on Saturday.“She had to stay composed within herself,” said Munster coach Patrick Spohr. “The second set, fatigue started to set in a little bit. We had to calm her down after she lost that second set, going into the third. We just had to remind her that the other girl played in a full three-set match before this and it’s just going to come down to the third set. Whoever wants it more is going to have go out there and take it.”Tallamraju wanted it more. She dominated Wendowski in set three and followed the yellow brick road towards the state promise land. Her sophomore season is now dripped in gold. Her crowning moment was the byproduct of her hustle and heart.“This was my definitely my hardest match,” Tallamraju said. “I grew with mental toughness, and I knew I would had to give it my all here, to really put forth all my effort and just stay positive and keep going.”Marc Ray is a high school sports reporter at the IndyStar. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup: Saibari scores for Morocco in stunning draw with BrazilWorld Cup: Saibari scores for Morocco in stunning draw with BrazilIsmael Saibari scored a delightful lob in his World Cup debut for Morocco against Brazil. FC Bayern’s transfer target gave the African representative a shocking lead before Vinicius Junior leveled the score with an equally impressive finish before the half-time break.PSV’s midfielder reacted quickly to chip the onrushing Alisson after a delightful through pass by Brahim Diaz just before the first-half hydration break. Morocco were in total control of the game until that point, but the five-time winners responded with a solo strike by Diaz’s Real Madrid teammate.Brazil continued to grow into the game, while Morocco’s strong start faded away after they conceded the equalizer. The draw extended Brazil’s unbeaten start to the World Cup as they were only defeated in the inaugural competition in 1930. Morocco never won their first game in the World Cup in seven attempts.Saibari played the entire game, while Stuttgart’s winger Bilal El Khannouss was replaced in the 80th minute by Ayoube Amaimouni. Eintracht Frankfurt’s youngster made his competitive debut on the big stage against a star-studded opponent. The Spanish-born attacker produced a fine performance as he nearly won it for Morocco in the 99th minute.Former Bundesliga players Douglas Santos and Matheus Cunha also made their World Cup debut for Brazil, while Achraf Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui were Morocco’s fullbacks. Scotland and Haiti will go head-to-head in about an hour in the same group.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 12 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBraves predicted to part ways with $20M underachieving Gold Glove winner at trade deadlineBraves predicted to part ways with $20M underachieving Gold Glove winner at trade deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Atlanta Braves are off to a strong start this season, opening up a sizable lead in the NL East. However, not every player has matched that pace.Ha-Seong Kim has struggled since returning from injury. As Atlanta approaches the trade deadline, the organization is beginning to evaluate his long-term fit.“Sounds like the Braves may be approaching a crossroads with Ha-Seong Kim. The belief internally may still be there, but if this continues another couple weeks, it feels like a legitimate ‘what are we doing at shortstop?’ conversation is coming,” 680 The Fan’s Chris Dimino said.Kim has had every opportunity to find his rhythm but has yet to deliver consistent production. Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos has also hinted that the team could be active at the deadline.“I fully expect and hope that we will be engaged in trades come July. I'm not trying to overly excite anybody or promise anything. But if we're playing the way we are right now, we're going to be in there,” Anthopoulos said. With the deadline approaching, Kim could become a name to watch. There is growing belief that the Braves could explore moving him, especially given the production of Jorge Mateo and Mauricio Dubón.“Trading away Kim isn't about what you can receive in return for the infielder, but handing the veteran a needed change of scenery. For the Braves, it is a chance to clear a roster spot that could be used for a player who has a bit more of a chance of being an important contributor or making a postseason roster. Mateo and Dubon can play all over the infield and handle duties in left field, giving the roster an incredible level of flexibility,” HTHB’s Nick Halden wrote. The Braves are in a difficult spot with Kim, but he still has time to turn things around over the next month. Eventually, however, Atlanta cannot afford to simply wait indefinitely.Kim is making $20 million this season and will become a free agent afterward. If the Braves decide to move him, it would not be disastrous. He remains a strong defender, but his bat will need to improve if he wants to remain in Atlanta.More MLB news:Braves predicted to go all-in for $32M 2-time Cy Young winner after Spencer Strider injuryPhillies predicted to trade for $100M Gold Glove winner, Silver Slugger after Adolis Garcia injuryDodgers' Mookie Betts ruined Yoshinobu Yamamoto's perfect game bid and shot at MLB historyYankees predicted to trade for $4.5M 2-time All-Star, ending Anthony Volpe's time in New York0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 12 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOhio State basketball guard Mathieu Grujicic announces new homeThe fifth and final member of the Ohio State basketball team who chose to transfer this past offseason has found a new home. Mathieu Grujicic spent just one season with the Buckeyes before deciding to move on. The 6-foot-7 guard from Europe has committed to Radford University. Grujicic joined Jake Diebler's 2025 recruiting class as a late addition, not joining OSU until June after playing professionally in Spain. However, he never really found his footing in Scarlet and Gray, seeing only 33 total minutes on the year, shooting 1 of 8 from the floor and 3 of 7 from the free-throw line. Radford competes in the Big South Conference and went 16-16 last season. The Highlanders last made the NCAA Tournament in 2018. It would've been nice to see Grujicic stick around a little longer to see what he could become, but it wasn't to be. The young man was looking for a place where he could contribute immediately, and it didn't look like Ohio State was going to be that place in the foreseeable future.NEWS: Ohio State transfer, Mathieu Grujicic, has committed to Radford, his reps at @KINpartners tell DraftExpress. The 6’7” guard led the 2025 U18 EuroBasket in scoring after building a strong youth résumé with Alba Berlin and Barça.Potential Big South breakout on the horizon. pic.twitter.com/hwBwIq2mSF— Jon Chepkevich (@JonChep) June 12, 2026Grujicic joins Taison Chatman (Utah), Gabe Cupps (Illinois-Chicago), Devin Royal (Villanova), and Colin White (Akron), who left Columbus looking for greener pastures. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVinicius earns Brazil draw with Morocco in World Cup openerVinicius Junior (R) scored a superb equaliser (Jewel SAMAD)Vinicius Junior scored a brilliant equaliser for Brazil in a 1-1 draw with Morocco on Saturday as the five-time World Cup winners made an uncertain start to the tournament in New Jersey.Ismael Saibari ran through to give Morocco a 21st-minute lead with a clever scoop in the Group C opener, but Vinicius produced a moment of magic to ensure Brazil came away with a point.Brazil are chasing a record sixth World Cup title, 24 years after last lifting the trophy, but this performance suggests there is a lot of work to be done by Carlo Ancelotti's side.Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Kaka were all members of Brazil's 2002 World Cup-winning squad and were among those in attendance at MetLife Stadium.Brazil have turned to the hugely successful Ancelotti a bid to end the country's title drought. He is the first foreign coach to lead Brazil at football's biggest tournament.A fifth-placed finish in South American qualifying underlined the scale of the challenge facing Ancelotti. However, the Italian insists Brazil possess a squad capable of competing with anyone in the expanded 48-team tournament. He was without Neymar for the start of the competition, with Brazil's all-time record goalscorer still recovering from a calf injury, having not played for his country since 2023.Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi urged his players not to fear Brazil, and his message appeared to resonate as the 2022 semi-finalists started brightly in one of the standout matches of the first round. After Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi threatened the Brazil goal, Saibari made the breakthrough when he latched onto a fine pass from Brahim Diaz. The PSV Eindhoven forward raced beyond Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhaes, holding his nerve with a clincal chipped finish over the advancing Alisson Becker.Brazil drew level 11 minutes later through Vinicius, who will have a vital role to play if Brazil are to shine this summer. The Real Madrid star received the ball from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the area before cutting back onto his right foot and hammering into the far corner past Yassine Bounou. It belatedly breathed life into a lacklustre Brazil and Lucas Paqueta saw his acrobatic effort pushed away by Bounou before half-time.Bounou saved well from Igor Thiago as Brazil caught Morocco napping with a quick throw-in after the break, while Raphinha and Danilo shot right at Bounou as the Selecao pressed for a winner.Morocco nearly snatched it at the death when Alisson parried a long-range effort from El Aynaoui and had to react sharply to block the follow-up from Ayoube Amaimouni.Brazil remain unbeaten in World Cup openers since 1934. They next face outsiders Haiti while Morocco take on Scotland in their second match.mw/rcw0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 11 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA insiders reveal possible trade package for Heat to land Giannis AntetokounmpoNBA insiders reveal possible trade package for Heat to land Giannis Antetokounmpo originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Miami Heat seem to be planning something big. The team has been mired in mediocrity for several seasons now, and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018-19 this past year. It's clear the team needs to make some bold moves if they plan on contending again. There are some interesting pieces on the roster, but it's hard to imagine Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro being enough to win a title. As a result, the Heat have been heavily linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. It really seems like Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are headed for a divorce this offseason, and the Heat are an intriguing landing spot. The NBA insiders at ESPN recently identified some realistic trade proposals for this summer, and of course, there's a Giannis-Heat one. Heat give up multiple intriguing pieces for GiannisESPN's trade proposal looks like this: Miami Heat receive: Giannis AntetokounmpoMilwaukee Bucks receive: Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Nikola Jovic, 2029 first-round pick, 2031 first-round pick This is an interesting package. Herro makes sense in Milwaukee, as a Wisconsin native. The Bucks would love Herro's shooting and perhaps a change of scenery could help him rejuvenate his career. Ware is a player who has never seemed to stay in Erik Spoelstra's good graces. He's another perfect change of scenery candidate, as is Jovic. That's an interesting trio of talent to send to Milwaukee, and the two future firsts could be enough to get the deal done. Of course, many assume the Bucks will take into account what Giannis wants. It's long been rumored that Giannis would be happy in Miami, so that also makes this deal seem reasonable. Would Heat mortgage the future for Giannis? The Heat and Pat Riley have notoriously been reluctant to rebuild, so we can be pretty sure they won't do that this offseason. It's also unlikely they'll just stay the course and be mediocre again, so that makes a blockbuster like this seem likely. If Giannis wants to be in Miami, he probably will be. I think the Heat would gladly give up this package for a player of Giannis' caliber. We know the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Detroit Pistons will be tough, but this move would immediately put the Heat at the top of the East. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNBA insider calls Kings/Hornets Sabonis trade 'pretty unlikely'As the 2026 NBA Draft approaches, many teams are monitoring the Charlotte Hornets, who hold two first-round draft choices, the No. 14 and 18 overall selections. Earlier this week it was said that one of those picks could potentially be used in a trade to acquire Domantas Sabonis from the Sacramento Kings, shoring up Charlotte's frontcourt. However, according to NBA insider Sam Amick, the two sides may not come to a deal after all. Amick reported that although the Hornets have "genuine interest," a deal is "pretty unlikely" as Charlotte would rather hold on to both of their first-round draft choices this June. Either way, the Hornets will be a team to watch come draft night due to their unexpected success last season and their flexibility this summer. This article originally appeared on Rookie Wire: NBA insider calls Sabonis to Charlotte trade 'pretty unlikely'0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 11 Views 0 Anteprima
