USA ‘94: How Tomas Brolin’s Sweden became the World Cup’s great entertainers
Italia ’90 didn’t get the football it deserved. It created iconic sights and sounds – Gazza’s tears, Milla’s hips, Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma – but the action was dismal. It produced the lowest goals per game (2.21) of any World Cup, rewarded miserly tactics, and was capped by an abominable final described by sports writer Brian Glanville as “probably the worst, most tedious, bad-tempered final in the history of the World Cup”.All of which made USA ’94 seem like a hedonistic festival of football. The back-pass rule had freed the game from its shackles and modern formulaic patterns weren’t yet figured out, making for a riotous American summer. Goals per game rocketed to a heady 2.71 and it all played out in vast open-air amphitheatres, like the Giants Stadium in New York and the monstrous 92,000-seater Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. More than 3.5m people saw a match and the average attendance of 69,000 remains the biggest ever World Cup show.On the pitch, collective stoicism gave way to individualistic flair; solo artists like Dennis Bergkamp, Gheorghe Hagi and Hristo Stoichkov took centre stage and one of the great World Cup duos, Romario and Bebeto, became the headline act. But no team epitomised USA 94 more than Sweden, a carefree rock and roll group fronted by Tomas Brolin who finished third and were the tournament’s top goalscorers – and with a little more luck might just have become world champions.Sweden’s popularity grew through the group stage as they produced an entertaining 2-2 draw with Cameroon in LA, an impressive 3-1 comeback win over Russia in Detroit, and a far more disciplined 1-1 draw with the favourites, Brazil. Thomas Ravelli was enjoyably erratic in goal, Roland Nilsson led from defence, the rangy Kennet Andersson sniffed out several brilliant goals in the box, Martin Dahlin’s vast forehead proved a potent goal threat, and the raw pace of the coolest man at the tournament, the dreadlocked Henrik Larsson, threatened from the bench. In the centre of it all, Brolin made Sweden tick to an unpredictable rhythm. He had a magnetic touch and an inventive streak best illustrated by his goal in the quarter-final against Romania; he lurked behind the defensive wall at a free-kick, then darted to receive a blindside pass before smashing the ball into the roof of the net. He demanded to be front and centre and started the opening game in attack alongside Dahlin, but the team shape changed in the second game – much to Brolin’s annoyance, as Andersson recalls.“For the second game our manager said Brolin was playing on the right wing and me and Dahlin were up front,” Andersson tells The Independent. “Brolin was not that happy in the beginning! I didn’t know at the time but later I found out our right-back Roland Nilsson had told him: ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to take care of the defence, you do what you have to do’. So it was kind of new for Brolin, but really it was a very good move because after that he just played fantastic football, together with the whole team.”Roger Ljund scores in Sweden’s 2-2 draw with Cameroon (GBrolin and Andersson combined to give Sweden the lead in their final group game against Brazil only for Romario to wriggle away from the attentions of Larsson and midfielder Stefan Schwarz to toe-poke a brilliant equaliser. It was a well-earned point against the eventual champions, but Larsson doesn’t remember it that way. “I played as a right midfield player against Brazil which wasn’t really my best position, and I just ended up chasing the game,” Larsson recalls of his first World Cup start. “I never really came into it. I was excited to play Brazil but I wasn’t too pleased about my performance that day.”Even so, Sweden finished second in the group and progressed to the round of 16 where they met the tournament’s surprise package, Saudi Arabia, in the oppressive Dallas heat. Nilsson recalls fearing the sun more than the Saudis, but they got through 3-1 after two well-taken strikes by Andersson and one throb of Dahlin’s forehead. The quarter-final is the game that stands out in both Larsson and Andersson’s mind: a trip to Stanford to face Hagi’s talented Romania side. Sweden went in front thanks to Brolin’s cleverly disguised set-piece with 12 minutes remaining, but Florin Raducioiu snatched a scrappy late equaliser to send the match to extra-time.Sweden came through a draining quarter-final against RomaniaThen in a seemingly damning 101st minute, English referee Philip Don sent off Schwarz moments before Raducioiu added a second to leave Romania a goal and a man ahead. Sweden were out on their feet and heading out of the tournament, but in the final throes Andersson leapt to head home his favourite goal and send the game to penalties. “They were all fantastic feelings but my most important goal was against Romania in the quarter-final,” he says. “We were really down because they were coming back from 1-0 down, playing really hard. Not only was it a crazy game but also in that very peculiar moment in the quarter-final of the World Cup, so it was really special.”Sweden had prepared meticulously for penalties and although Hakan Mild missed their first, Andersson and Brolin both converted in a run of four goals before Larsson – facing “the most pressure of my life” – scored in sudden death to give Ravelli the stage. Sweden’s goalkeeper teetered on his line like a drunk before lurching to his left to make a brilliant acrobatic save with one hand to set up a semi-final against Brazil.Romaria’s late header would prove the semi-final winner (GIt came only three days later, and for Sweden it was a match too far. The small core of their squad had clocked up hundreds of minutes on the pitch and thousands of miles across America. They were without the suspended Schwarz, they had just played 120 draining minutes in San Francisco, with 24 hours less rest than Brazil, and so they set about chasing Romario and company across the cavernous Rose Bowl in hope, not expectation.Brazil missed several sitters in the first half including a near-open goal for Romario which Patrik Andersson cleared off the line. Sweden clung on in the blazing sun for an hour until the most efficient and polite sending off you are ever likely to see: the wonderfully handsome midfielder Jonas Thern clattered into Dunga, the Colombian referee standing five yards away immediately arched his back and flourished red, and Thern calmly shook Dunga by the hand, clasped a few more Brazilian palms and departed. As the pressure mounted Ravelli made several spectacular saves, but finally, in the 80th minute, Romario found a pocket of space to head Brazil into the World Cup final.Thomas Brolin celebrates after winning the third place play-offSweden rallied themselves for a third place play-off, producing a brilliant show to thrash Stoichkov’s Bulgaria side 4-0 with goals from the brilliant Brolin (as well as two assists via typically measured through-balls), Mild, Larsson and Andersson – his fifth goal of the tournament and Sweden’s 15th. Larsson admits luck played its part along the way, particularly at the end of their dramatic quarter-final with Romania, but Andersson puts both their success and their popularity down to a spirit fostered for more than a decade. “I had been playing with Martin Dahlin since we were 15 years old in the national team, so we knew each other and everybody knew each other,” says Andersson. “When you’re in a tournament you’re in a bubble. You don’t hear anything, you don’t feel anything, but afterwards I got this sensation because I had so many letters from all over the world, not only Sweden. Me and Dahlin scored more than Bebeto and Romario together, it was fantastic. And of course – everybody loves a team who scores a lot.”

Return for Liverpool star dismissed by journalist
Return for Liverpool star dismissed by journalistSalah Liverpool Return Talk Dismissed After Slot Exit ClaimEl-Shenawy Claim Lacks ConvictionMohamed Salah and Liverpool remain a story capable of bending logic, sentiment and speculation into one neat transfer swirl. This latest chapter, however, feels especially flimsy.Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy has suggested Salah could yet remain at Liverpool following Arne Slot’s exit, claiming the forward has not made a final decision. Speaking to ON Sport, he said:“He spent a long time there. He got used to the club, gave them everything, lived many happy moments there, won a lot of trophies. Naturally, leaving would affect him. That’s normal. But who knows? Maybe things could still change and he could stay. Nobody knows. He said exactly: ‘Honestly, I still don’t know.’ That’s what he told me. So I really don’t know where he’ll go. He hasn’t made a decision yet.”It is an emotional quote, certainly. It also says very little. “Nobody knows” is not a transfer update, it is a holding pattern.Crook Dismisses Salah Staying TalkAlex Crook of talkSPORT has dismissed the idea of Salah staying at Liverpool, and frankly, that reading feels far more grounded. The Egyptian’s exit was not presented as a routine pause or a contract stand-off. It was framed as a rupture.Salah terminated his Liverpool contract a year early after serious tensions with Slot, despite producing a remarkable final full season at Anfield. A player delivering 34 goals and 23 assists does not normally walk away unless something has broken beyond simple repair.Slot’s departure may remove one obstacle, but it does not automatically rebuild the bridge.Liverpool Cannot Live on SentimentThere is a temptation, especially with a player of Salah’s stature, to imagine every door remains slightly open. Liverpool supporters know what he gave the club. They know the goals, the trophies, the authority, the fear he carried into every defensive line.Yet football decisions at this level are rarely romantic. Salah was on a deal worth up to £480,000 a week. His future now appears tied to Egypt’s World Cup campaign, with agent Ramy Abbas Issa urging patience and making clear that private plans will remain private. That does not sound like a player edging quietly back into Kirkby.World Cup Focus Comes FirstFor Salah, the World Cup now provides the obvious staging post. Any major decision before Egypt’s campaign ends would be a distraction, and Abbas has made it clear that non-committal answers should not be treated as confirmation.Liverpool, meanwhile, must plan without drifting into fantasy. Salah may still love the club. He may still feel the emotional weight of leaving. None of that means a return is likely. This feels less like a comeback trail and more like transfer noise built around one uncertain quote. Crook’s dismissal of the idea sounds right. Salah and Liverpool had their era. At some point, even the greatest eras have to stay closed.

Refugee who quit Bayern to create Aussie World Cup dream
Nestory Irankunda may have wrote his name into Australia football history books but he was a player already creating his own remarkable story. The 20-year-old Watford forward became the youngest scorer in the World Cup for the Socceroos when he netted their opener in a 2-0 win over Turkey in Vancouver."It is unreal and a dream come true," Irankunda said shortly after full-time. But it is just the latest step on an incredible journey for the once refugee who just a year ago was learning from Harry Kane at Bayern Munich.Irankunda was born in a Tanzania refugee camp in 2006 to Burundi parents who had fled their homeland due to a civil war.He was still a young child when they moved to the country he now represents on the biggest stage of world football.Irankunda found football in Australia and eventually came through the ranks at Adelaide United in the A-League.After 16 goals and eight assists for the senior side, an eye-catching move to Bayern followed in 2024. Bold decision to leave BayernThere was never a first-team appearance in Germany but there was plenty of time on the training pitch with some of the best players in the world, including England striker Kane.Yet those lack of minutes threatened his dream. That was to play for Australia at this World Cup. He had made his debut in a World Cup qualifier in June 2024 against Bangladesh and became the second youngest scorer in the country's history when he netted against Palestine in just his second appearance. After a loan spell at Swiss side Grasshopper last season, he had a decision to make in the summer. It wasn't an easy one when the opportunity came to move to Watford for an undisclosed fee and leave the Bundesliga giants but he needed to play if he was to get his World Cup chance having fallen out of the Australia squad."It was a hard decision but obviously my biggest goal for me is to play at the World Cup," Irankunda told Sky Sports last summer. "The 2026 World Cup is around the corner and I have to play minutes, I wasn't playing minutes."It has always been a dream of mine to play in England."He has been called "Houdini" by team-mate Mohamed Toure and said he could have the same impact on Australia as Jude Bellingham on England. "I've seen a lot of good players but sometimes you have a special talent and he's that," added Toure. "If he puts in the work and stays grounded I think he'll go beyond the potential many people already say he has. He'll surpass that."Irankunda replicated Tim Cahill's iconic celebration with the corner flag [Getty Images]Irankunda makes history as impressive Australia beat Turkey'Your whole world can change'He played 42 games for the Championship club, scored four goals and made five to ensure he was selected for the World Cup.Now he has created history for his country and in style, too. His finish was superb after he showed pace and power to create the opening in the 27th minute against Turkey in the Group D clash."It doesn't matter what level of football you play at, in the park or World Cup, that is fantastic speed," former Australia and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou told ITV.It meant he was the first player born outside of Australia to score a World Cup goal for the Socceroos. He has in the past mimicked Michael Jackson in celebrating goals, even donning a white glove in March when he netted against Curacao. This time he opted to copy former Australia and Everton midfielder Tim Cahill by giving the corner flag a couple of punches."Timmy Cahill is my biggest inspiration when it comes to football," Irankunda said after the win over Turkey."Him and Lionel Messi. Tim Cahill, Australia's greatest in my opinion. I just thought if I scored, I'll do the same as him and I got to do it."Postecoglou believes the goal may have an impact on Irankunda's future career. "A massive moment," added Postecoglou. "Sometimes in World Cups, you just need a good couple of weeks and your whole world can change. Let's hope that is the start for him."World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

📹 Australia punish Turkey's profligacy: the highlights
📹 Australia punish Turkey's profligacy: the highlightsDespite an incredible amount of possession and a clear edge in chances, Turkey lost 0–2 to Australia in their World Cup opener. Here you can watch the highlights of the match: While Güler, the substitute Yildiz & Co. were among those left frustrated, often by their own finishing, the Socceroos focused very early on, after taking the lead, on uncompromising defending. That worked until the final whistle, and instead of Turkey scoring their first goal in a World Cup comeback after 24 years, Australia even added a second. By the way, this match was the last one before the German team’s World Cup opener. That finally kicks off later at 7 p.m. We’re already really excited and hope you feel the same! This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. 2026 World Cup, Day 4: Germany vs. Curaçao; Netherlands vs. Japan; Côte d’Ivoire vs. Ecuador; Sweden vs. Tunisia
COLUMBUS, OHIO - JUNE 10: (EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE) (EDITORS NOTE: This image has been digitally altered.) Moises Caicedo #23 of Ecuador poses for a portrait during the official FIFA World Cup 2026 portrait session on June 10, 2026 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Joosep Martinson - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) | FIFA via Getty Images Day 3 was the first day with a full slate of games, four in total, back-to-back-to-back-to-back. For once, it paid to be on the West Coast, with the game starting at noon and then every three hours after that. Perfect timings. But, by and large, all four were worth staying up late (or getting up early), headlined by the 1-1 draw between Morocco and Brazil — though both teams ran out of ideas in the second half — and capped off by a highly entertaining 2-0 win for Australia over Turkey in front of a raucous crowd in Vancouver, BC (and an energetic broadcast team on Telemundo). Group D bringing it! And there was history made, too, with Qatar picking up their first ever point at a World Cup thanks to a late equalizer against a disappointing Switzerland and Scotland recording their first win at the tournament since 1990, beating Haiti, 1-0. Scotland have never played a knockout round match at a World Cup; they just might finally get to do so at the ninth try.Today, we’ll finally have some Chelsea involvement, too, so get those eyeballs ready!GERMANY vs. CURAÇAOContrasts don’t get much greater than a four-time champion against a tiny island nation who have never been to the World Cup before, but the gap may not be as massive as it seems at first glance. Germany failed to make it out of the group stage in both 2018 and 2022, while Curaçao, who are part of the Kingdom of Netherlands, are managed by legendary Dutch manager Dick Advocaat, with much of their squad based the Netherlands as well. There is still sizeable gap of course, but it’s not quite the size of the Grand Canyon.Date / Time: Sunday, June 14, 2026, 1pm EDT; 6pm BSTVenue: NRG Stadium, Houston, TX, USAReferee: Jalal Jayed (Morocco)On TV: FOX, Telemundo (USA); ITV 1 (UK); elsewhereStreaming online: FOX One, Peacock (USA); ITVx (UK)Chelsea interest: We’ve got a few ex-Chelsea friends on Die Mannschaft this year, including Antonio Rüdiger and Kai Havertz, both of whom love the big stage, as we know. Former Chelsea prospect Jamal Musiala is fully recovered from the nasty injury he suffered last summer at the Club World Cup and could be key to any deep run from Germany. As alluded to above, Curaçao are not just a collection of unknowns, with most of their players based in the Netherlands or around Europe. Former Manchester United prospect Tahith Chong is one of a few with some Premier League experience under his belt, even.NETHERLANDS vs. JAPANSpeaking of the Netherlands, their actual team spring into action as well, taking on popular dark-horse candidates Japan. This one’s the headline matchup of the day.Japan have made it to the knockout rounds in four of the past six World Cups — though they’ll have to do so without Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring surgery) this time around. The Netherlands have finished second, third, and fifth in the last three tournaments that they didn’t fail to qualify for like in 2018. and in fact, they lost just one game in those three tournament, the 2010 final to Spain, going out on penalties in both 2014 and 2022 (both times against Argentina).Date / Time: Sunday, June 14, 2026, 7pm EDT; 12am BSTVenue: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX, USA (a.ka. Jerry World)Referee: Ismael Elfath (USA)On TV: FOX, Telemundo (USA); ITV 1 (UK); elsewhereStreaming online: FOX One, Peacock (USA); ITVx (UK)Chelsea interest: Jorrel Hato is the youngest member of the Dutch squad, so he may not end up playing a lot of minutes. But hopefully he gets a few looks. Former Chelsea youngster Nathan Aké is still here as well of course. There are no Chelsea players on Japan.CÔTE d’IVOIRE vs. ECUADOREcuador are another popular pick for a potential surprise semifinal run, with perhaps the best defensive unit in any national team on the planet, conceding just 5 goals in South American qualifying. Unfortunately, their attack is rather poor and still relies on Enner Valencia, now 36 years young, to score the goals. Côte d’Ivoire are back for the first time since 2014, and though they are no longer the vintage Drogba-era outfit, they did win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.Date / Time: Sunday, June 14, 2026, 4pm EDT; 9pm BSTVenue: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA, USAReferee: François Letexier (France)On TV: FOX Sports 1, Telemundo (USA); BBC One (UK); elsewhereStreaming online: FOX One, Peacock (USA); BBC iPlayer (UK)Chelsea interest: Veteran midfielders Franck Kessie and Jean-Michaël Seri used to be frequent subject of Chelsea transfer rumors, but these days the closest we can come to claiming someone is Guéla Doué, who plays right back for our BlueCo sister club, RC Strasbourg. (Yes, he’s the older brother of PSG’s Désire Doué, who represents France.)La Tri meanwhile count two Chelsea players among their number, key midfielder Moisés Caicedo and young prospect Kendry Páez. SWEDEN vs. TUNISIASweden’s best ever World Cup was the last time the US hosted, back in 1994, when the likes of Thomas Ravelli, Martin Dahlin, Tomas Brolin, and a young Henrik Larsson got all the way to third place. Sweden hadn’t qualified for three of the last four World Cups, so they’ll be looking to make some noise now that they’re here. This is Tunisia’s seventh World Cup; they’re still looking for their first knock-round game. Scotland set themselves up yesterday to break their own futility in the area, so perhaps that’ll serve as inspiration.Date / Time: Sunday, June 14, 2026, 10pm EDT; 3am BSTVenue: Estadio BBVA, Guadalupe, MexicoReferee: Yael Falcón (Argentina)On TV: FOX Sports 1, Telemundo (USA); ITV 1 (UK); elsewhereStreaming online: FOX One, Peacock (USA); ITVx (UK)Chelsea interest: There are no Chelsea players, current or former, on either of these two teams, though we do have a certain Graham Potter standing in the Swedish dugout. He took over there at the start of last season, on the heels of his disappointments at Chelsea and then at West Ham. But he’s a hero in this case just for getting the Swedes back into the biggest dance.

Report: Newcastle Eye £60m Liverpool Winger In Busy Summer
Report: Newcastle Eye £60m Liverpool Winger In Busy SummerNewcastle Transfer News: Cody Gakpo Interest Signals Summer IntentGakpo Links Raise Bigger Newcastle QuestionNewcastle United’s reported interest in Cody Gakpo feels like the sort of story that belongs at the start of a defining summer. According to CaughtOffside, the Magpies are among the clubs monitoring the Liverpool forward, whose future at Anfield is said to be uncertain after a difficult 2025-2026 campaign.Tottenham are reportedly ahead in the race and willing to pay around £60m, a figure that would make any pursuit serious rather than speculative. Newcastle, though, being in the conversation matters. It points towards ambition, but also towards need. After finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League, Eddie Howe’s side cannot afford another window of good intentions and mixed results. They need players who immediately raise the level, sharpen the attack and restore a sense of momentum.Liverpool Uncertainty Could Open DoorGakpo’s situation is intriguing because he remains a player of obvious quality. Described as “elite”, the Dutch international has shown flashes of technical elegance, intelligence between the lines and the ability to operate across the front line.Liverpool’s likely desire to reshape their attacking options this summer may leave Gakpo vulnerable. If new arrivals push him further down the order, then a move could become logical for all parties.Yet that does not make it simple. At £60m, Newcastle would not be buying potential alone. They would be buying expectation. Gakpo would arrive needing to influence games quickly, not merely fit into a longer development plan.Howe Needs More Than NamesThe wider issue for Newcastle is not simply recruitment, it is integration. The original report rightly notes that players such as Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade struggled to make the desired impact during 2025-2026.Photo IMAGOThat matters. Signing good footballers is one part of rebuilding a side. Creating a structure in which they thrive is another. For Howe, the question is whether Gakpo would be given the platform to look like the player who once seemed so composed and dangerous at Liverpool. Would he play from the left, drifting inside? Would he be used centrally? Would he complement the striker, or compete with him? Those details will decide whether this is smart planning or another expensive gamble.Summer Window Carries Huge PressureNewcastle need reinforcements across the pitch, not only in attack. A stronger forward line helps, but it cannot cover structural weaknesses elsewhere.Still, Gakpo would be a fascinating statement. He is Premier League tested, technically refined and still capable of becoming a major figure in the right environment. For Newcastle, this summer is about more than adding talent. It is about rediscovering direction. Our View – EPL Index AnalysisFrom a Newcastle fan’s perspective, this is exactly the kind of link that excites and worries you at the same time.Gakpo is a serious footballer. You can see the quality. He is smooth in possession, clever with his movement and versatile enough to give Howe different attacking shapes. If Newcastle are serious about climbing back up the table, they need players with that kind of ceiling.Yet the £60m figure is the part that makes you pause. After a poor season, Newcastle cannot spend big simply because a player has a strong reputation. They need certainty, or at least something close to it.The concern is whether Gakpo solves the most urgent problem. Newcastle need pace, creativity, depth, defensive stability and better balance. If the budget is limited, every major signing has to be close to perfect. There is also the Howe factor. If he stays, he has to get more from new arrivals than he did last season. Gakpo could be brilliant, but only if there is a clear plan. This would be an ambitious move. It could also become a defining test of Newcastle’s recruitment maturity.

Manu Kone: “My future? We’ll see after the World Cup.”
Manu Kone: “My future? We’ll see after the World Cup.”Manu Koné has put transfer rumors to rest, at least for now. The French midfielder, linked to several European clubs in recent weeks and at the center of numerous rumors regarding his future, prefers to focus exclusively on his national team. When asked about the rumors surrounding him, including those regarding Inter Milan and a possible departure from Roma, the player chose not to comment.“Honestly, right now I’m only thinking about the World Cup. It’s my first major international competition, a tournament I’ve always dreamed of playing in. I want to stay focused exclusively on that.”These words confirm the Frenchman’s desire to put any transfer-related discussions aside at least until the end of the competition. Koné then postponed any evaluation until the coming weeks, without closing or opening up any specific scenarios: “We’ll talk about the future after the World Cup and see what happens.”

Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez Vs. Antonio Vargas Results, Highlights And Reaction
Jesse "Bam" RodriguezCredit: Chris Esqueda/Matchroom BoxingJesse "Bam" Rodriguez is him. The pound-for-pound star walked through a determined Antonio Vargas en route to a sixth-round, one-punch KO to become a three-division champion on Saturday night in Glendale, Arizona. I’ve seen some impressive performances from Bam, but this one gets a gold star from me for several reasons. Let’s talk boxing.Bam stepped up in weight to a third division — which is just four pounds smaller than Naoya Inoue — and Vargas was prepared and gave Rodriguez all he could handle through the first four rounds. However, Bam again proved he was special with this deliciously dangerous right hand that ended the fight.Key Facts At A GlanceResult:Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez def. Antonio Vargas, sixth-round KOTitle: WBA bantamweight (118 pounds)Records: Rodriguez 24-0 (17 KOs); Vargas 19-2-1 (11 KOs)Milestone: Rodriguez becomes a three-division champion (112, 115, 118)Venue: Desert Diamond Arena, Glendale, ArizonaWhat Happened In Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez Vs. Antonio Vargas?Vargas came out throwing hard combinations straight down the middle. He seemed to have an answer for Rodriguez's lateral movement and flanking. Through the first four rounds, it appeared as though he may have cracked Bam's code. Late in the fourth, Bam appeared to shift into a higher gear and in the sixth, he scored the clean KO win. That surge changed the fight on the canvas. Rodriguez dropped Vargas in the fifth round, the knockdown that flipped a competitive contest, then closed the show a round later to seal his three-division milestone. What Were The Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez Vs. Antonio Vargas Highlights?Vargas' gameplan delivered some strong moments, and it's things Bam's future opponents will likely study. However, the young champion's resilience and power stole the show.On offense, Rodriguez snapped Vargas’s head back with clean left hands and built combinations off shifting footwork and southpaw angles. The finishing right hand was the exclamation point, the same variety that carried him past Fernando Martinez and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai at 115.READ MORE about Naoya Inoue:Naoya Inoue vs. Junto Nakatani Full Card: Date, Time and How To WatchNaoya Inoue vs. Junto Nakatani Full Card: Ringwalk TimesHow Did Fans And Pundits React To Bam Rodriguez's Win?The talk after the fight is about whether Bam should chase Inoue immediately or defend his newest title at 118 pounds. Rodriguez's trainer Robert Garcia says he wants another fight in this division. The broader reaction cast it as an elite pound-for-pound fighter doing exactly what he should against a live underdog. There was fresh talk of Rodriguez sitting second only to Naoya Inoue among the sport’s best smaller men.Is Naoya Inoue Next For Bam Rodriguez?I'd say it's probably not, at least not Naoya. It is more likely Rodriguez faces Naoya's brother Takuma who holds a title at 118 pounds.Takuma Inoue currently holds the WBC bantamweight title, having beaten Tenshin Nasukawa and Kazuto Ioka, which makes a 118-pound unification with Rodriguez a cleaner near-term fight than chasing Naoya Inoue up at 122. The Monster still looms as the eventual prize, but Bam may gather more bantamweight hardware first. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Man United take drastic financial measures to fund summer business as Mateus Fernandes becomes primary target
Man United take drastic financial measures to fund summer business as Mateus Fernandes becomes primary targetManchester United’s summer rebuild appears to be gathering pace, with West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes earmarked as the club’s primary midfield target.According to the Daily Mail, the 21-year-old has moved to the top of United’s shortlist, and they’re already making major moves to fund the transfer.United have been linked with a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. However, United are reluctant to enter an expensive bidding war with Manchester City, who have already seen a £120 million offer rejected for the midfielder. That has forced United to look elsewhere in their search for midfield reinforcement, and Fernandes is seen as a promising option.Despite missing out on a place in Portugal’s World Cup squad, Fernandes is still one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe.Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have all been linked with Fernandes, but reports suggest United have moved into a strong position in the race for his signature. While no official offer has been submitted, discussions have already taken place with the player’s representatives, and personal terms are not expected to present any difficulties should negotiations advance.West Ham’s situation could also play a major role in any potential deal.Following their relegation from the Premier League, the Hammers are under pressure to generate revenue through player sales before the end of the month in order to meet financial regulations.Fernandes is one of the few high-profile assets on West Ham’s roster, and he could be the key to straightening out their financial issues. However, clubs are reluctant to match their £80m asking price, with United hoping that West Ham would shift their stance as the transfer window progresses.United have already brought in Ederson from Atalanta in a £39m deal, but they’ll need to sell players to fund any further additions.Meanwhile, United are already taking steps to improve their financial outlook. They recently completed a refinancing package that extends part of the club’s debt until 2031 while increasing overall borrowing. The agreement also provides additional cash that could be used for general operations and potentially give them more wiggle room in the transfer market.

Jubilation as Scotland fans celebrate first World Cup win in 36 years
There were celebrations at a massive fan zone in Glasgow [Getty Images]Jubilant Scotland fans are celebrating a first World Cup victory in 36 years.Supporters had gathered in bars and venues across the country with a sense of anticipation to watch the opening match against Haiti - despite the 02:00 BST kick-off time. There were roars of delight at the John McGinn goal which proved to be enough to earn a crucial 1-0 victory - and then relief when the final whistle blew at the stadium thousands of miles away in Boston. It is estimated that up to 30,000 thousand fans travelled to the US for the match, filling up both the stadium and the fan zone.Back home, those fans who stayed up late - or got up very early - emerged blinking into the early morning sunshine as they reflected on a result which sees Scotland top their group. The nation has been gripped by the build-up to the men's team's first match in a World Cup since 1998.Fans had packed out the pubs and other venues which had been granted late licenses to show the game. They ranged from the thousands who descended on the OVO Hydro in Glasgow for what was billed as the country's biggest fan zone, to small community events across the country.About 500 people watched the action on big screens at a fan zone at Aberdeen's Beach Ballroom. The doors had opened at 22:30 BST on Saturday under a beautiful orange sunset sky, as the fans were played in by a bagpiper.Hours later daylight greeted those happy supporters, many kitted out in Saltires and Scotland tops, as they spilled back out onto the street.Fans Jim Stewart, David Stewart, Craig Stewart, and Alex Stewart watched the game at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen [BBC]Nineteen-year-old Alex Stewart, from Forfar, was among those who were celebrating."For me it's the first time seeing Scotland at a World Cup and watching us win a game is unbelievable."We're sitting top of the group. It opens the group up entirely."Looking ahead to the next two games in the group, he added: "You've got two big names in Brazil and Morocco... just go for it."Craig Stewart, 31, also from Forfar, was "ecstatic" about the result. While he admitted the performance had been "shaky", he said the result was what mattered at the end of the day.Fans in Glasgow celebrated the victory which took Scotland top of their group [Getty Images][Getty Images]Lefika Duncan Taukobong, 36, predicted a Scotland win - and is positive about the nation's chances at the World Cup."Miracles happen - Scotland are going through to the knockouts," he said.Greens Sports Bar was one of the 50 premises in Dumfries and Galloway which took up the option of opening late for the Haiti game.More than 200 fans watched the drama unfold in the early hours of Sunday morning.Liam Logue, who runs the Dumfries pub with wife Cas, said the World Cup had been a welcome boost for business."It would be great to see us get through to the next round for the first time," he said.Shaun McGeachan said it was one of the biggest football moments for his generation [BBC]Shaun McGeachan was one of those who roared when the full-time whistle blew."It's by far one of the biggest football moments for my generation," he said."It was great to see the sea of navy shirts and hands holding pints in the air."We've got to keep on getting behind the team and hoping they can push on through."Ryan Kerr (left) watched the match with friends Matthew and David Smith. [BBC]It was a first time watching Scotland at a World Cup for Ryan Kerr and his friends Matthew and David Smith."The whole week building up to it has been amazing," said Ryan. But he was a bit worried by what he saw from the other two teams in Scotland's group earlier in the night."We'll need to play well against Brazil and Morocco," he said."A point against Morocco might take us through."Those watching the game in the fan zone on the other side of the Atlantic included Chris Goodman from Stirling. He said he was feeling "euphoric" after watching the victory with his son Jack."It's something I never thought I'd see again, so to be here with my son... I'm over the moon."David Grindlay from Glasgow was there with his friend Alistair Fleming."We've waited 28 years for this moment and it feels fantastic," he said."This is my third World Cup, and this one is special. I'm over the moon."Amy Devine, 30, from Pollokshields in Glasgow, is staying with her friend Izzie Schmaltz, 27 who is from Boston but used to live in Glasgow.Amy said: "I'm so emotional, I've cried about 10 times today."My husband is at the game and he's sent me photos of his crying too."Izzie said she was celebrating wins for both her teams - Scotland and the US."Everything I touch turns to gold. I mean, we've basically won the World Cup now, right? We're top of the group," she said."It's an amazing atmosphere, it's like being back in Glasgow. Marcus Rashford: Major update on Bayern’s move for United ace
Marcus Rashford: Major update on Bayern’s move for United aceManchester United’s quest to permanently offload Marcus Rashford this summer appears to have hit another setback. The English forward was deemed surplus to requirements during the reign of former head coach Ruben Amorim, and INEOS’ stance has not changed following the Portuguese’s departure.Rashford spent six months on loan at Aston Villa before joining Barcelona on a season-long temporary deal last summer. The 28 year old enjoyed an excellent stay at Camp Nou, winning the league and the Supercopa de Espana. Rashford finished the campaign with 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish champions. Marcus Rashford Stats: 2025/26 SeasonSource: Transfermarkt. United were hopeful that Barcelona would exercise their option to sign the Englishman permanently at the end of the season for €30 million. However, the Catalans opted against the move, signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United instead. United desperate to move Rashford onBarcelona’s decision was a big setback for United, who are eager to cash in on Rashford to raise funds for a busy summer. While the Catalans opted out of a move, they could return for the Englishman later in the window and try to sign him on their terms. However, the Red Devils will be reluctant to let this saga drag on and affect their window, especially since there is no dearth of interest in the player. Chelsea have been mentioned as an option, while Bayern Munich have also been named among his suitors. A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person suggested that the Bavarians are preparing to offer €25 million for the Englishman this summer. However, acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano has now arrived with an update on the situation that will not please United fans. Rashford not a priority for Bayern MunichSpeaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that Bayern have Rashford on their wish list, but insisted that the player is not a priority target for the Bundesliga giants. He said: “Many questions on what’s happening with Rashford.”“Some of you asking me if Bayern is a possibility. My understanding is that they were some calls from Bayern in the past two, three weeks to understand the situation of Marcus Rashford.”Romano went on to add that the Bavarians are looking for a different profile of attacker, mentioning PSV Eindhoven’s Ismael Saibari as an option. He continued: “So, asking in general, if Rashford could be an option, but at the moment, Bayern are more oriented on a different kind of player. For example, Saibari.”“Saibari is, obviously, in terms of technical skills different from Rashford, but in terms of salary, in terms of cost of the deal, is way less compared to what Bayern should spend in order to sign Marcus Rashford. So, it’s a completely different kind of deal, and that’s why the situation with Rashford and Bayern is appreciation, yes.”“There is some people at Bayern appreciating Rashford, but at the moment, no negotiation, no bid, and the focus at Bayern is on different players. So, let’s say that Rashford in this moment is not the first choice at Bayern.”Final ThoughtsUnited would have preferred to sort out Rashford’s future early in the summer to prevent it from becoming a distraction. However, all signs indicate that this saga could drag on until the final weeks of the window. Titans' Tony Pollard gaining offseason fantasy buzz
The Tennessee Titans have almost completed their offseason work, with only the team's mandatory minicamp on the horizon, followed a few weeks later by training camp. While the Titans have made some significant changes this offseason, running back Tony Pollard will return and once again take the majority of snaps in the backfield. While he isn’t flashy, he is a consistent back who will make an impact. This consistency and the improvements made during the offseason are some of the reasons that Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus picks Pollard as one of his “must draft’ players in fantasy circles heading into 2026.Tony PollardPollard is one of two running backs who have produced four straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons, finishing as a top-23 fantasy running back in each of those years across stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans. Most of Pollard's rate stats have been average, but there are signs he is a very good running back held back by his situation. He has averaged 3.3 yards after contact per carry over the last four seasons, tied for fourth-best among running backs with at least 500 carries, behind only De'Von Achane, Derrick Henry and Bijan Robinson. His 1.1 yards before contact per carry rank tied for fifth-worst over that span. He has also generated explosive plays at a high rate, earning a +1.0 run grade on 4.2% of his carries, eighth-best among running backs. The good news is that Pollard is positioned to be Tennessee's clear starter for a third straight season. The Titans passed on Jeremiyah Love with the fourth overall pick, and their only backfield additions were Michael Carter and fifth-round rookie Nicholas Singleton. While the Titans added Carter and Singleton during the offseason, head coach Robert Saleh has made it clear that Pollard and Tyja Spears will be the primary backs heading into the season. This should be great news for fantasy owners who could land a quality under-the-radar back in their upcoming drafts. This article originally appeared on Titans Wire: Tennessee Titans' Tony Pollard gaining offseason fantasy buzz

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels had his eyes on Patrick Mahomes this week
You can bank on the fact that Jayden Daniels knows what Patrick Mahomes did this week. The third-year Washington Commanders quarterback enters the third year of his rookie contract. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs veteran quarterback agreed with the Chiefs on a contract extension. Think about this: the upcoming season is 2026. Well, on Wednesday, the Chiefs made sure Mahomes is their man through the 2033 season. That's eight seasons more of Patrick Mahomes wearing the Kansas City red.More important to Mahomes and yes, Daniels is the fact that the contract extension is worth $504.75 million. Yes, you read that correctly, $504,750,000! The NFL now has a starting quarterback with a contract of over half a billion dollars! Can't you imagine Jayden Daniels' agent picking up the phone and calling him to tell Jayden about Mahomes' new contract extension?Oh, wait, you didn't forget, did you? Jayden Daniels' agent is his mother, Regina Jackson. Daniels had been previously represented by agent Ron Daniels before his mother, Regina, became Jayden's primary representative. Miss Regina has made it perfectly clear in the past that she is looking out for her youngin' to get a good contract after his rookie contract expires. Hey, a good mother who loves her child is to be commended in this day and age.According to some players around the league, there is belief that #Commanders QB Jayden Daniels has a chance to become the next “Patrick Mahomes 2.0”, per @JamesPalmerTV. pic.twitter.com/nOIPlCJrzE— brandon (@JayDanielsMVP) December 31, 2024If Jayden has a very good third NFL season, then the Commanders could possibly look to renew his contract next offseason. I understand coaches, media, and fans are more concerned with how Jayden plays this upcoming season. Hey, Commanders Wire is as well. Yet, we can't be naive. If we put ourselves in Jayden's and Regina's shoes, can't we understand that they can't help but think about, and perhaps will discuss during the season, Jayden getting a new contract next offseason? As her son's agent, Miss Regina is already aware that Mahomes' new contract guaranteed Mahomes $150,250,000 and that Mahomes now will average $63,093,750. Let's all hope Jayden can remain focused on his 2026 on-field challenges, not get sidetracked by the big payday that will definitely come his way if he continues to be productive. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels knows what Patrick Mahomes did

Patrick Beach takes over as Australia's goalkeeper and stars in World Cup opener
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — For Australia’s opener against Turkey, the Socceroos’ presumed starting goalkeeper was Mathew Ryan, who entered this tournament as a veteran of three World Cups and the team's captain.Manager Tony Popovic instead turned to a 22-year-old keeper, who would be playing in just his third ever international match: Patrick Beach.“A couple of days ago, the boss and our keeper coach pulled me aside and told me that I’d be playing,” Beach said. “They had confidence in me, and that became the confidence I needed to get out there and do my job tonight.”In the 30th minute, while the Socceroos held an unexpected 1-0 lead over Turkey, Beach made his first save of many, quickly justifying Popovic’s bold decision. As Turkey’s Abdulkerim Bardakci launched a blistering long-range shot destined for the goal, Beach made a fully outstretched save to redirect the ball off the post and away to safety. He added another pair of excellent saves in the second half, diving to deny Arda Guler's free kick from outside the box and turning away Kerem Akturkoglu’s shot from near the penalty spot.Beach finished with eight-saves and a clean sheet. The Sydney native has only played two professional seasons to Ryan’s 16, both as the starting keeper for Melbourne City of Australia’s A-League. Beach started in the Socceroos’ final friendly match before the World Cup, a 1-1 draw to Switzerland, but did not appear in any of his nation’s nine other friendlies dating back to June 2025. “You get out there, and you’re in front of 50,000 people, and how many (more) around the world,” Beach said. “So, there’s those, but at the end of the day you just keep it simple. It’s a game of football, and two teams just going at it.”The inexperienced goalkeeper remained poised while Turkey controlled 72% of possession and attempted 30 shots, with eight on target. In by far the biggest match of his life, Beach said he was nervous, but the strong defense in front of him and the confidence of his teammates and coaches helped him pull through.“It’s a team selected to perform well,” Popovic said when asked of his decision to start Beach over Ryan. “Regardless of the result it was the right decision.”The upset win moved Australia to second place in Group D, just behind the United States on goal differential. More significant than its position in the standings, however, was that the victory represented one of Australia’s most impressive World Cup starts in decades. Much of the credit belongs to its young goalkeeper.“He looked very at ease on the big stage,” Popovic said of Beach. “He made the saves he had to make. The quality they have, and the wonderful free kicks he took — he was up to the task.”___Ben Kule is a student in the University of Georgia’s Carmical Sports Media Institute.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

Chris Redman praises Lamar Jackson’s leadership, work ethic
Chris Redman has watched the Louisville quarterback pipeline evolve from his own playing days to Lamar Jackson’s rise, and during his conversation on The Lounge with Ryan Mink and Garrett Downing, he focused less on talent and more on what sustains it. Redman said the first time he saw Lamar, the athletic ability stood out immediately—but it wasn’t the only thing that caught his attention.“I was like, whoa, this guy—an incredible athlete,” he said. But what ultimately defined Lamar in Redman's eyes was his approach to preparation and consistency behind the scenes.“The biggest thing I probably remember and still think is amazing is his work ethic,” Redman said.He added that leadership is something earned over time, not manufactured.“The guys love him. You can’t just fake that,” he explained. For Redman, that combination of talent, work ethic, and respect is what separates good quarterbacks from great ones—and it’s why Lamar’s success at the NFL level feels like a natural continuation of what started at Louisville and now thrives in Baltimore. This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Chris Redman says Lamar Jackson’s leadership cannot be faked

NEW DELHI: India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy produced one of the most wholesome moments of the day following India's victory over Afghanistan in the opening ODI in Dharamsala, briefly pausing his post-match press conference to attend a phone call from his mother. The light-hearted episode quickly won hearts, with the BCCI sharing a video of the interaction on social media with the caption: “The post-match presser can wait but a call from Mom simply cannot.”Nitish, who was answering questions from reporters after India's seven-wicket victory, suddenly received a call from his mother. The youngster politely picked up the phone, telling her that he would call back in five minutes before apologising to the journalist for the interruption, drawing smiles all around the room. The heartwarming moment capped another memorable day for the 23-year-old, who made valuable contributions with the ball during India's comfortable victory.WATCH:— BCCI (@BCCI) Nitish Reddy chips in as debutants shinePlaying in a rain-curtailed 25-overs-per-side contest, India elected to bowl first and reduced Afghanistan to 26/3.However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz launched a stunning counterattack, smashing a brilliant century and sharing a 116-run stand with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, who contributed 27.Nitish struck two key blows, dismissing centurion Gurbaz and veteran all-rounder Mohammed Nabi, finishing with figures of 2/31 from four overs. The star performers with the ball, however, were debutants Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey. Gurnoor impressed with figures of 3/27, while left-arm spinner Harsh claimed 3/47 after recovering strongly from an expensive start.Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 194 in 24.5 overs.Shubman Gill leads India's chaseIndia made light work of the target despite losing Rohit Sharma for 16 after a brisk opening stand.Player of the Match Shubman Gill anchored the chase magnificently with an unbeaten 84 off 66 deliveries, striking 11 fours and two sixes. He first shared a 70-run partnership with Ishan Kishan, who made 34, before KL Rahul's unbeaten 39 off just 19 balls helped India seal victory in 22.5 overs and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.Gill praised the debutants after the match, saying their ability to pull things back in the middle overs had been "very impressive".But while Gill's match-winning knock and the debutants' exploits stole the headlines on the field, it was Nitish's touching exchange with his mother that provided the day's most memorable moment. 131716524

For the first time in 53-years, the New York Knicks are the champions of the NBA. On Sunday night in San Antonio, the Knicks hoisted the Larry O'Brien Trophy, beating the Spurs in five games to become the new champs of the association. At the helm of the Knicks title run was former Golden State Warriors assistant coach, Mike Brown. Brown played a key role on Steve Kerr's coaching staff during the Warriors' championships in 2017, 2018 and 2022. Along with winning a title as an assistant with the Warriors, Brown was also on the coaching staff when the Spurs won the title in 2003. However, Sunday's 94-90 win over the Spurs gave Brown his first championship as an NBA head coach. "WHO LET THE DOGS OUT" 😂🐶The entire Knicks team did Mike Brown's bark chant again 😭 pic.twitter.com/oJCyrDBahj— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) June 14, 2026Brown spent six seasons as an assistant on Kerr's coaching staff before leaving the Warriors to become the head coach of the Sacramento Kings. Brown has been coaching in the NBA since 1997 as an assistant. In 2005, Brown received his first chance as a head coach, taking over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Under Brown, the Cavs made it to the NBA Finals in 2007, but lost to the Spurs. Along with the Cavaliers and Kings, Brown served as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Brown has been named NBA Coach of the Year twice, first in 2008-09 season and then in the 2022-23 season. Brown can now add NBA champion as a head coach to his already decorated basketball resume. Aleksandar Pavlović gets geography lesson as Germany readies for Curaçao
HOUSTON, TEXAS - JUNE 13: Aleksandar Pavlovic of Germany during the press conference of Germany one day ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E match between Germany and Curacao at Houston Stadium on June 13, 2026 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images) | Getty Images Admit it, you would have trouble finding Curaçao on a map.Even with that, you would be one step ahead of Bayern Munich midfielder and projected starter for Germany, Aleksandar Pavlović.Pavlović had never even heard of Curaçao prior to the World Cup draw. Now, though, he will be an expert on their football team as the Germans are ready for their World Cup opener vs. the island nation. “At the time of the draw, I didn’t know the country, I have to admit. But it’s certainly a great event for them, and we’re looking forward to the game. We’ve seen some footage of them. They try to counter-attack and sit very deep. We have to watch out for that. I’m looking forward to getting started and we’re all excited,” Pavlović told ZDF (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). While Germany is expected to be a big favorite, this is widely-regarded as the best team from Curaçao ever, which should make this one fun. Watch every World Cup goal from Day 3 as Vinicius Jr rescues Brazil and John McGinn earns historic win for Scotland
Brazil's forward #07 Vinicius Junior celebrates with teammates after scoring his team's first goal during the 2026 World Cup Group C football match between Brazil and Morocco at the New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford on June 13, 2026. (Photo by CHARLY TRIBALLEAU / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images World Cup 2026 delivered more thrills and spills on Day 3 as eight teams shared seven goals and there wasn’t a goaless draw in sight. Switzerland and Qatar kicked things off and the Swiss may just be still kicking themselves after throwing away the win by conceding late on.Brazil were up next in their first appearance of the tournament so far. The Selecao failed to impress but still showed the star quality they possess by scoring one of the best goals we’ve seen so far from Vinicius Jr to rescue a draw. There was also plenty of history made in the final two games. Veteran midfielder John McGinn wrote his name into the history books with the only goal in a nervy win for Scotland over Haiti, while a youthful looking Australia stunned Turkiye to claim an impressive victory.Time to check out all the goals from Day 3.Vinicius stunner rescues BrazilThere’s no doubt the game of the day was in New York where five-time champions Brazil faced AFCON winners Morocco. There was early drama too, as Morocco dominated the early exchanges and took the lead when Brahim Diaz played a perfectly-weighted ball through for Ismael Saibari to run on to and lift the ball over Alisson and into the back of the net. The goal was just reward for a great start to the game by Morocco.MOROCCO SCORES ITS FIRST GOAL OF THE 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP! 🇲🇦It's Saibari with the goal to take the lead over Brazil pic.twitter.com/OOLsI4aPdC— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) June 13, 2026Brazil had been second best but levelled in spectacular style just after the half hour mark. Swiss stunned by late, late Qatar showDay 3 of World Cup 2026 had kicked off with Switzerland against Qatar and the first penalty to be awarded at the tournament so far this summer. The Swiss were the beneficiaries after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada clattered into Remo Freuler.Referee Said Martinez pointed straight to the spot and the decision was confirmed by VAR despite strong suspicions of offside. Breel Embolo then made no mistake, casually strolling up to the ball and sending Abunada the wrong way with a coolly-taken spot-kick.SWITZERLAND HAS ITS FIRST GOAL OF THE 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP! 🇨🇭Embolo converts from the spot to score his 3rd career FIFA World Cup goal pic.twitter.com/60ZMrcwxk7— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) June 13, 2026Switzerland went on to dominate the game, racking up 26 shots, but couldn’t put away Qatar and were made to pay deep into stoppage time. Knicks vs. Spurs NBA Finals: It all started with Jalen Brunson, and it all ends with him as well
SAN ANTONIO — As Jalen Brunson wended his way through the bowels of Frost Bank Center in the wee hours of Sunday morning, he did so laden with gold. Everywhere he went — from interview to interview, from embrace to embrace, from moment to celebratory moment — the New York Knicks captain toted the Larry O’Brien Championship trophy and the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP trophy that he’d just won. Those suckers — especially the Larry O’B — are pretty damn big. They didn’t seem too heavy, though, in arms that have been carrying a hell of a lot more than that: the weight of expectations, the fate of a franchise, the hopes and dreams of millions upon millions of New Yorkers. When Brunson finally made his way into the visitors’ interview room, and set his newly won trophies down on the podium, he wondered aloud about setting something else down, too.“The question is,” Brunson asked the assembled media, “do I be myself? Or do I talk my s***?”When presented with the opportunity to do so, though — to describe how he was feeling, to discuss everything that led him to this point, all the slights and slings and arrows that fueled him and brought him to the top of the mountain — Brunson made the simple read, the easy play.“Words can't describe it,” Brunson said. “But I'll say: I put a lot of time and effort into trying to be the best player I can be to try and help a team win. Just really thankful to have the organization, the coaching staff, my teammates, to have my back every single day.”That Brunson even considered choosing violence, though, showed just how much this remarkable moment — the overwhelming emotion he’d felt on the court after the game, the thrill of reaching the pinnacle of his profession — had thawed his typically icy exterior. The king of the anodyne quote, forever preaching “0-0 mindset” and “one possession at a time” and all that, had finally reached the point where there were no more games to prepare for, no more possessions to lock in for — nothing to do but bask in the glow of the achievement he’d worked for his entire life. For the first time in 53 years, the New York Knicks are the champions of the NBA, and Jalen Brunson is the Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals, an honor he’d earned unanimously after authoring a Game 5 for the ages: 45 points on 14-for-27 shooting from the field, 4-for-7 from 3-point range, 13-for-15 from the free-throw line in 41 peerless minutes.Yet again, the Knicks had trailed the San Antonio Spurs by double digits in these 2026 NBA Finals. And yet again, Brunson and his teammates just steadily walked the Spurs down, chipping away at the deficit until — yet again — Victor Wembanyama and Co. found themselves wondering what the hell had just hit them. What hit them was No. 11, who scored 29 of his 45 after halftime, including 16 in the fourth quarter, continuously applying pressure to the younger, less seasoned Spurs until, eventually, they broke. What hit them was weaponized stubbornness, internalized rage at being told all the things you can’t do — a chip on the shoulder sharpened into a blade dangerous enough to slice through any defense, even one led by a 7-foot-infinity unanimous Defensive Player of the Year. What hit them was the entirety of what Brunson had to give. And in Game 5, with a championship on the line, what he had to give was …“Everything,” he said with a laugh. “I was just trying to go out there and just will us to win. Wasn't focused on anything else besides trying to win the game. Getting stops. Getting out and running. Just figuring out how to cut that lead, or to gain it when we got it. Really exciting moment, knowing we won't give up.”That relentlessness, that indefatigability became the defining quality of these Knicks. They came back from a pair of 20-pointdeficits on the road against the favored Boston Celtics last spring. They came back from down 2-1 in the first round to the Atlanta Hawks, punctuating that surge with a historic 51-point beatdown. They came back from down 22 in the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. They came back from double-digit deficits four times in these Finals — most notably in Game 4, when they erased a 29-point Spurs lead in what will go down as the greatest comeback in NBA history. And on Saturday, they did it again.“Tonight, we played like we wanted to go home champions,” Brunson said, before clarifying: “To finish the game. Not to start the game.”The Knicks got off to another slow offensive start in Game 5, struggling to create space and good looks against a snarling Spurs defense that smothered every action, every pass, every rim attack, every catch-and-shoot chance. The Knicks had more turnovers (five) than made shots (four) in the first quarter, shooting a dismal 18.2% from the field in the opening frame. Things improved in the second, but only marginally; New York went into halftime down only five, but that owed as much to San Antonio’s own offensive struggles as anything that any Knick besides Brunson (who had 16 of the Knicks’ 37 first-half points) was doing. “Yeah, we owe him,” said Knicks guard Landry Shamet, who scored five points on 2-for-7 shooting. “We weren't great offensively tonight. But he is generationally great offensively.”He proved that in the second half, when it seemed like everything that had made the Knicks so incredible over these past two months was being stripped away. Karl-Anthony Towns — a revelation earlier in the postseason as a high-post playmaking hub, and a dominant stretch-5 who’d outplayed Wembanyama in the early stages of these Finals — was racked with foul trouble, contributing just two points on 1-for-7 shooting (albeit with 10 rebounds and three steals) before fouling out in just 23 minutes. OG Anunoby — so brilliant and efficient all series long, and the hero of that Game 4 stunner — was similarly limited offensively, chipping in just 11 points on 11 shots. The Knicks’ entire bench was scoreless until the final minute of the third quarter.Nothing else was working. So Mike Brown had to rely on his fastball. Good ol’ No. 11.“I've said it, and I hope you guys will listen to me, but he's a top-three MVP candidate,” Brown said. “You know, everybody kind of mentions his name in passing. They don't do it seriously enough. You know, people say he's too small. People say he's a 1B or a 2B or whatever. He is a freaking 1A. He is an MVP candidate. [...] You know, he understands what winning is about.”Brown then spoke about the decision that helped shape this Knicks roster: Brunson deciding to sign a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension in the summer of 2024, rather than waiting a year, when he would have been eligible for a five-year pact that could have topped out at an estimated $269 million. That decision — that $113 million haircut — created the financial conditions that enabled the Knicks to pony up to retain Anunoby when he hit free agency, to bring in and later extend another college buddy in Mikal Bridges, and to fit in the supermax salary of All-NBA stretch-big Towns — all without going over the second apron.“You know, he comes and he probably takes a pay cut that I wouldn't have taken,” Brown said. “Every time they would've thrown that number in front of me, I would have said no — and I feel like I'm a good guy! He set the bar before he even stepped on the floor.”It was a choice that came with some risk; there’s no guarantee that a player will make up the nine figures of guaranteed salary he’s forsaking for flexibility and roster functionality. But Brunson said Saturday that he had this night in mind when he put pen to paper — that he believed this outcome was “very possible.”“With a lot of hard work and effort, I knew it was achievable,” he said. “But that was only a small portion of it. I think everyone bonding, coming together, having the mindset of just believing in each other, never giving up, no matter what the situation was, made this all possible. Yes, it may look like [the contract] had something to do with it, but it's a credit to my teammates.”Brunson just kept carrying it all until his teammates could catch up. Josh Hart, who spent so much of the series — and this postseason, really — fighting through the mental challenge of being intentionally left alone by centers cross-matching onto him so that they could ignore him to muck up driving lanes elsewhere, stepped into a pull-up 3 that kept the deficit within single digits early in the fourth. After missing 14 of his previous 15 shots stretching back to Game 3, Shamet finally hit a pair of huge shots — a pull-up 3 off a dribble handoff with Bridges to cut the deficit to six with just under nine and a half minutes to go, and a hard drive for a layup a minute later. Anunoby found a pocket of space in transition, cutting baseline for a dunk that was ruled a goaltend, putting the Knicks up three with 2:07 to go.But through it all, it was Brunson who gave the Knicks what they needed when they needed it. Pump-faking defender after defender into the air, drawing contact, and getting himself to the line — the unglamorous, engine-room work that chips away at a big lead. Pushing the pace off Spurs misses whenever possible, seeking the opportunity to attack a lane not filled by Wembanyama. Pulling up from 3 in Wembanyama’s face, drilling it, landing on Wembanyama’s foot, turning his ankle … and just getting back up, getting back in the game, and keeping it pushing.“I'm hurting right now,” Brunson admitted after the game. “I'm not going to lie to you. I'm hurting right now. But like I said before, the opportunity presented itself. Whatever you've got to do.”“That's who Cap is — Cap always find a way to get back on the court and produce,” Towns said. “That's a testament to who he is, and just his story — never giving up, always have been the underdog, always been looked down upon. It always takes one person to believe in you. This organization believed in him, and we believed in him. We were going to do whatever it takes to get him to the next level.”A personal 10-0 Brunson run tied the game at 83 with 4:48 to go. When a Devin Vassell pull-up put San Antonio back on top, Brunson got himself back to the line to give the Knicks the lead. When ace rookie Dylan Harper hit a short jumper to tie it at 88, Brunson pushed the ball right back down the floor, drove right around Stephon Castle — a monstrous defender who’d been draped all over Brunson all series long — and got into the paint for a patented floater to regain the advantage.“I don't think it took a toll on me mentally,” Brunson said of the Spurs’ defense, which came in waves, hectoring him the full length and width of the court, minute after minute, game after game. “Maybe a little bit physically, obviously, just because of the game and what they are trying to do. Mentally, I feel fresh. I feel like that's where I thrive.”The numbers bear it out. Through the first two games of the Finals, Brunson averaged 25 points on 33.9% shooting, including 23.5% from 3-point range — woeful efficiency, even if he was nails in the clutch when it counted. Over the final three games, though, after he’d felt the Spurs out and decided on a plan of counter-attack: 37.7 points per game, 48.1% shooting, 52.6% from 3-point range and 85.3% from the free-throw line.“That was unreal — just, literally, unreal,” said Knicks center Mitchell Robinson. “I'm speechless. I seen it a couple times here and there, but to do it in a closeout game against a good team like that … it's different. His mindset, his work ethic, his energy that he just brings — you know, he just brings joy, and you know, we need that.”Time after time, possession after possession, that was the difference: For all the incredible young talent the Spurs have, all the ascendant athletic marvels who might soon run this league, the Knicks had Jalen Brunson. And that meant they had enough.“He got going, then he got going later on,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He's a heck of a player. He deserves everything he's got.”“That was a good team,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. “I mean, we lost. Super tough. That’s a credit to them. They’ve got a great superstar in Jalen Brunson that gets the job done.”Superstar. Funny word, that. It’s not a title many would have ascribed to Brunson when he fell to the second round in the 2018 NBA Draft, even after all the collegiate accolades he’d accrued at Villanova. It’s not one many would have believed he’d grow into during his first few years in Dallas. Frankly, it’s one many wondered if Brunson would be able to live up to when Knicks president Leon Rose first signed him — his former client, later his son Sam’s client, and the son of his first client, former Knicks player and current Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson — in unrestricted free agency in 2022.A nine-figure deal carries with it a certain amount of pressure. A nine-figure deal to be the starting point guard of the New York Knicks, one expected to restore the franchise to a glory it had rarely seen in the previous half-century? That’s a very, very different proposition.“People don't understand — we don't really talk about it — but the weight of that jersey, the expectations, the pressure of that jersey,” Hart said. “And like I say: Today, right now, it's the lightest it's ever felt.”Brunson, though, insists that it never feels that heavy to him. Because, as he puts it, he grew up with an up-close-and-personal look at what real stress looks like.“My dad [Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson] being on eight or nine unguaranteed contracts throughout his career and not knowing when you're going to get cut, when a team is going to move on from you, while your family is on the East Coast and you are wherever you are in the country? That's pressure,” Brunson said. “Working out three times a day in the summertime and watching him push himself just to get a training camp deal, that's pressure. I'm very fortunate to be in the position I am, and I definitely think I worked pretty hard. So when the opportunity presented itself like it did today, I just trust my work. And if we win, we win. If we don't, we learn. We move forward.“But I'm just never afraid to fail.”That’s why he succeeds, again and again — and why, on Saturday, he did so to a degree that etched his name into the history books.Brunson is the first Knick ever to score 40 points in an NBA Finals game. He’s one of just 11 players in NBA history with a 45-point game in the Finals, joining a who’s who of the greatest of all time: Jerry West, Michael Jordan, Bob Pettit, Elgin Baylor, Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo. He’s one of just six players ever to hang 45 in the Finals on the road. One of just four ever to do it in acloseoutgame. On the road and in a closeout? It’s just Michael Jordan, Game 6 in Utah, 1998, and Jalen Brunson, Game 5, in San Antonio, on Saturday. It was arguably the greatest individual performance in Knicks history — one that, in the mind of his coach, cemented Brunson’s place in the upper echelon of franchise legends.“I love Pat[rick Ewing],” Brown said. “Pat's up there. I hope Pat doesn't kill me. He's bigger than me. We're both old and slow but because he's got a longer reach, he might be able to kill me. But Brunson … he is him, man. When it comes to New York basketball, he is freaking him.”After Game 5, Ewing — who’s been a fixture at Madison Square Garden for years, who’d been traveling with the team during this playoff run, and whom Brown said had become a valuable sounding board for current Knicks players throughout the process of pursuing a title — didn’t seem too concerned about chasing Brown down to argue for his place in the pecking order. (Maybe that’s because Rick Brunson was busy doing it for him.)Ewing looked … ecstatic, actually.“I’m doing great,” Ewing told Yahoo Sports. “I’m feeling so blessed.”Like, decades after his Knicks teams fell short and he was eventually traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, a weight had at long last been lifted off those massive shoulders.“Oh, definitely,” he said, in between hugs with friends and Knicks staffers. “It took 53 years. … Yes, it feels great.”Ewing was hardly alone in that feeling in San Antonio on Saturday; there were thousands of Knicks fans feeling it, too.It was the first thing you noticed, as you walked around Frost Bank Center: all the jerseys. And shirseys. So many friggin’ Knicks shirts. It wasn’t the Brunsons or the Harts or the Anunobys or the Townses that stood out (although there certainly were plenty of those). No — it was the Ewings, the Oakleys, the Masons. The Sprewells, LJs, Kurt Thomases and Charlie Wards. The Melos, Amar’es and Lins. The Porzingii, Barretts and Quickleys. The Alec Burks and Kevin Knox (singular). It was how worn they looked. Not carefully distressed vintage; just, y’know, distressed. Naturally. By the ravages of time, and by rooting for the team they represented. Yards, miles even, of fabric-as-testimonial — threads as throughline, all telling the story of a lifelong love that was so often unrequited by a franchise that, for the better part of 30 years, could never seem to get out of its own way, but that continued to captivate generations of city kids and Tri-State suburban ex-pats all the same. That’s why they travel like this. OK, yes, it’s partly because it’s more cost-effective than actually getting into Madison Square Garden, which would require taking out a second mortgage on the house you can’t afford to buy anywhere within an hour of Midtown. But it’s also because some things you do for money — like, say, sell your ticket to some dude from Jersey who’s willing to crack open his 401(k) for it — and some you do for love, love, love. It’s that love that had Jose Alvarado sprinting toward the Knicks locker room, a Puerto Rican flag that Knicks PR had procured for him draped across his shoulders, screaming about how he was going to party. That had Fat Joe walking back to the locker room sweating, accepting congratulations, saying that he’d “played a hard one tonight.” That had Ben Stiller, who’s spent months documenting this incredible Knicks run, beaming as he walked toward the bus home, holding Mike Brown’s whiteboard as a souvenir from a night he’ll never forget. That had centers Robinson and Ariel Hukporti, already bottle in hand and goggles on minutes after getting off the court, leaping into the other with joy, body-bumping so hard that they knocked a nearby photographer’s phone out of his hand. That had a shirtless Jeremy Sochan leaping in to join them. That had Knicks staffers bumping Ja Rule’s “New York” in the visiting locker room, where the celebration had long since wrapped up by the time the media was allowed in, with spent magnums of Moet and Ace of Spades littering a soaked carpet as cigar smoke curled toward the fluorescent lights in the ceiling. It’s that love that led Brunson back to the franchise he’d grown up inside, and that led said franchise to move heaven and earth to surround with a team worthy of his talents.“I see a man that's grown up and took the challenge of being in the biggest market in the world, being with a team that hasn't made it to the NBA Finals in 27 years and hasn't won in [53] years, and knowing that he could do it,” Towns said, flanked by a nodding Anunoby. “Shoutout to everybody who told him he couldn't do it, because it gave him fuel for the fire. For him to welcome both of us here into this organization and trust that we were here for him, it means a lot. It means a lot to have a person like that who has been handed the keys to the city and was willing to have the door open for both of us to join.”It’s that love that was on display as Brunson accepted the honors he’d earned, his father watching him, his teammates serenading him, droves of Knicks fans chanting his name.“It’s everything we dreamed of,” Brunson told ESPN’s Ernie Johnson during the championship ceremony after the game. “It’s why I came to New York.”He came, he saw and he conquered. The Knicks’ path toward a championship started with Brunson, and it ended with Brunson hoisting the trophy as the best player on the best team in the world. After the game, Brunson was asked what that fact said to those who’ve wondered about whether or not he was a “1A” player.“I didn't respond to them then,” Brunson said. “And I'm damn sure not going to respond to them now.”It took him a while. But the king of New York finally talked his s***.

‘You have to perform…’ – Vladimir Smicer says Liverpool star simply must deliver at the World CupVladimir Smicer has claimed that one Liverpool player in particular will be ‘under pressure’ to perform at this summer’s World Cup.It’s almost a year to the day since the Reds broke their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a £116m deal (later surpassed by the £125m signing of Alexander Isak), although the Germany international fell short of many people’s expectations in his first season at Anfield.DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL EMPIRE OF THE KOP APP FOR ALL THE LATEST & BREAKING UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON APPLE & GOOGLE PLAYThere were moments of brilliance from the 23-year-old throughout the campaign, but a return of just seven goals and 10 assists in 49 matches felt underwhelming for a player of his enormous talents.Smicer: Wirtz needs a strong showing at the World CupWirtz scored the first goal of Euro 2024 inside the early stages of the opening match against Scotland, but Smicer has warned that expectations on the Liverpool star to deliver at the World Cup will be higher than what they had been two years ago.The 2005 Champions League winner told Casinostugan (via Liverpool Echo): “I think the price tag and the transfer money from Leverkusen to Liverpool was big, and the pressure was on Wirtz with statistics about how much his goals and assists cost.“That pressure from the media and fans is behind him now. He’s preparing for the World Cup with his teammates for the national team, but a player like him will be under pressure all the time. “You have to perform for Liverpool, and now for Germany. A performance of similar conviction in Germany’s World Cup opener would go some way to answering his critics.

Where fans can buy the New York Knicks championship shirt
Photo by Ronald Cortes/Getty ImagesNew York Knicks fans did not have to wait long to buy championship gear after the franchise finally ended their 53-year NBA title drought. The official shirts went live quickly after the Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to win their first NBA Championship since 1973.For supporters who want the locker-room look, the safest route is sticking with official team, league, and licensed retailers.Photo by Dustin Satloff/Getty ImagesWhere to buy New York Knicks NBA Champions shirtsFans can buy official New York Knicks championship shirts through the NBA Store, Fanatics, Nike, and the official MSG Shop. The key item is the 2026 NBA Finals Champions Locker Room T-shirt, the style tied to the team’s postgame celebration. The NBA Store listed a Nike gray limited-edition locker-room tee at $45, while Fanatics also carried championship T-shirts, hats, and related title gear.MSG Shop is another useful stop because it is the official store of Madison Square Garden and has carried Knicks playoff and championship collections during this run.Fans looking for more options can also check Nike directly for official locker-room designs, while Rally House and other licensed retailers may carry shirts, hats, and hoodies depending on stock. The biggest advice is simple: buy from official or clearly licensed sellers. A Knicks title after 53 years creates instant demand, and unofficial shirts will flood online marketplaces quickly.Knicks championship win sends fans rushing for gearThe merchandise rush makes sense because the title game was historic.New York trailed by 16 in the first half in San Antonio and was still down 42-37 at halftime, but Jalen Brunson delivered one of the greatest games in Knicks history.Brunson scored 45 points, including 13 straight for New York in the fourth quarter, as the Knicks closed the Finals 4-1 and finally brought the trophy back to Madison Square Garden.Josh Hart added 13 points and 11 rebounds, Mikal Bridges scored 14, and the Knicks survived Victor Wembanyama’s 19 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks.Fans flooded New York streets after the final buzzer, while others immediately started searching for shirts, hats, and anything that marked the end of the long wait. After 53 years, this is not just another piece of merch. As 37-year TV career ends, Dan Lucy reflects on the Ozarks, new media
In November 1988, Dan Lucy, a sports anchor for the University of Missouri's news station KOMU in Columbia, met with KYTV reporter Ned Reynolds in Springfield to discuss coverage of the Missouri-Southwest Missouri State men's basketball preseason game. The two NBC-affiliate stations planned to broadcast the game and Lucy thought this was a good opportunity to establish a connection with someone who — unbeknownst to Reynolds — could soon be a regional colleague.Lucy didn't mention he was visiting Springfield to interview with KOLR10 for what would be his first job after college, but Reynolds somehow caught wind of it."When he was leaving, he goes, 'Oh, by the way, I know you're interviewing for a job across the street,'" Lucy recalled. "I said, 'Well, we'll see what happens with that.'""Why else would he be down here?," Reynolds said. "We'll put two and two together, and I knew that the job opening would be at Channel 10 ... The rivalries in a small market are nowhere near as intense as they are in bigger cities, so everybody knows what everybody else is doing."What came next was a 37-year career covering some of the biggest sporting moments in the Ozarks area. In that time, Lucy rode the waves of the ever-changing media industry — until earlier this month, when one of those waves forced an early exit.Lucy spent the first five years of his OzarksFirst tenure as a weekday sports reporter and a weekend anchor before being promoted to sports director in 1993. He occupied that role until his contract officially ended June 2. Lucy knew in advance the end was coming but didn't announce it to the public until his time ran out.In addition to not renewing his contract, Lucy said the news station is eliminating its sports director position entirely as it looks toward a new system for its sports coverage."The philosophical approach has changed, and when you're dealing in many cases with corporate America, then your decisions are being made from elsewhere and not locally," Reynolds said. "That's one of the byproducts of the profession that we're in and the corporate money that's being used."Lucy's departure highlights a growing shift within not just sports journalism but the professional media landscape as a whole. Gone are the days when television, newspapers and radio were the only places to get news. Now the day's news often rests in the palm of your hand.Just as smartphones allowed news to travel across the world in seconds, the rise of social media has seen a shift from traditional sources of information to short-form, entertainment-oriented alternatives. Some consumers would rather watch a short video and hear about the news from influencers rather than reporters. As a result, viewership is shrinking, which means ad revenue is going down, which means less money to pay the employees who staff local newsrooms and television stations."[The media landscape] is all changed," Lucy said. "Instead of having, like, three television stations, you've got 55 people that can give you stuff in the area on their own little YouTube or their own podcast. So, you know, that's where we're at now. Whether that's good or bad, I have no idea."One thing that can't be easily replaced is Lucy's longevity and the continuity he provided after spending nearly four decades learning, understanding, and honoring the stories of athletes in the Ozarks."There is a tendency to only stay in one area for a very short time, and to probably, or at least in that individual's perception, climb the proverbial ladder," Reynolds said. "But there's some of us who chose not to do that. I didn't, and I don't think Dan did either. Dan stayed in the market for what, 37 years, something like that. And more power to them because you really develop a certain level of understanding with the people and what they want to watch and hear."Like Reynolds and other longtime Springfield reporters, Lucy gained a loyal following through his tenure at KOLR. And while there were opportunities to move on, he chose to stay where he started. The son of an Army colonel who moved every few years throughout his childhood, Lucy said he finally found comfort in southwest Missouri. He found a community made up of kind people that offered everything that he needed and desired. In his mind, there was no reason to leave."I just kind of wanted to settle down a little bit," Lucy said. "This is a great town, a great place to raise a family, and I was able to, you know, stay in one place so my son [Scott] could go to the same elementary school and the same high school for all of his years."It just wasn't anything that I was like, 'I just got to stay here'... the sports just continue to grow, so I was enjoying my career here. And you know, that's kind of the plus, the added bonus of all that, was that my son was able to stay with his friends and everything through high school."Along the way, Lucy's work was recognized many times, including with his induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2018."Dan approached everything with the seriousness that a broadcaster should. There was no frivolity, anything of that nature," Reynolds said. "All the big events, he was always there and covering everything that needed to be covered ... So, from that standpoint, yeah, he was Johnny on the spot. He was always right there, and did I think a very credible job."Lucy doesn't see himself getting back into the television space anytime soon — a non-compete clause in his earlier contract limits what he can do. He plans to enjoy the summer on his own and hopes to find some form of work involving Missouri State in time for football season."Going to work around 1 p.m., get home at 11 p.m., I did that for almost 40 years with that shift. So now everything's kind of different," Lucy said. "It's more of a normal day. I'm not sure exactly what normal is for me, so I'm trying to figure that out. Got a lot of things to do, you know, around the house and stuff like that. So kind of just relaxing, letting the dust settle." Emma Raducanu vs Donna Vekić Preview: Head-to-Head, Prediction for HSBC Championships, Queen’s Club 2026
Jul 2, 2025; Wimbledon, United Kingdom; Emma Raducanu of Great Britain during her match against Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic on day three at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. © Susan Mullane-Imagn ImagesEmma Raducanu looks to win her first title since her 2021 US Open triumph as she takes on Donna Vekić in the final of the 2026 HSBC Championships. The Brit has surpassed all expectations with her run at Queen’s Club, making the final without dropping a set. However, Vekić has also enjoyed a strong week and will have her sights set on winning her fifth title on the WTA Tour.Emma Raducanu vs Donna Vekić Match DetailsDate: June 14, 2026Tournament: HSBC Championships 2026Round: Women’s Singles FinalVenue: Queen’s Club, London, EnglandSurface: Outdoor GrassCategory: WTA 500Live Telecast: Tennis Channel, Sky Sports, TSNRaducanu vs Vekić Head-to-Head RecordThis will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour. Raducanu goes into the title clash after claiming two impressive wins on Saturday. She defeated Kamilla Rakhimova and Iva Jovic in straight sets, all while dealing with a thigh issue.Raducanu has showcased incredible resilience this week, looking like a completely different player than the one we saw at the French Open, where she was sent packing in the first round. Her aggressive return game helped her overpower Jovic in the semifinals, and she will hope to use that to her advantage in the final.Lucky loser Vekić stunned home favorite Katie Boulter 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals, and has also overcome Karolína Plíšková and Marie Bouzková at Queen’s Club. She has used her experience to her advantage, going from losing in qualifying to a sixth grass-court final.Raducanu vs Vekić Prediction and PickRaducanu has yet to drop a set at Queen’s Club, powering into the final while showing great tenacity and playing on the front foot. She has looked efficient on her serve, avoided errors, and defended well on her return. This will be Raducanu’s second final of 2026, and she will hope that it goes better than the Transylvania Open, where she was soundly beaten by Sorana Cîrstea.Vekić has more big-match experience under her belt. She is an Olympic silver medalist and has a decent grass-court record, having been a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2024 and the Nottingham champion in 2017. But it remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old can finally overcome her disappointing record in finals. She has lost her last five title clashes on the WTA Tour and Challenger level. The key for Vekić will be to try and take advantage of any fatigue or lingering effects Raducanu is facing from her thigh injury. Her powerful groundstrokes allow her to dictate play, and she is very much at home on grass courts. However, we believe that the momentum is firmly on Raducanu’s side. If she is at 100% fitness, she will fancy her chances of finally ending her five-year title drought.Pick – Raducanu in three sets.

Roma not giving up on Fiorentina’s Dodo
Roma not giving up on Fiorentina’s DodoWhile all eyes remain on the big target of Greenwood, Roma continues to move decisively on other strategic fronts of the transfer market, particularly on the flanks, considered one of the key areas to strengthen to meet Gasperini’s needs. The trail for Fiorentina’s Dodò has not faded, and the Brazilian could join his compatriot Wesley at the Giallorossi. At Trigoria, Corriere dello Sport reports, the same intense discussion is underway regarding the wingers, where scouting work has already begun. On the left flank, interest in Ruggeri remains keen, a profile the Giallorossi management continues to like due to his potential and characteristics. However, the negotiations promise to be complex: Atlético Madrid appear unwilling to cut corners and are demanding a fee of no less than €20 million to let him leave. At the same time, the right flank has seen a surge in interest in recent hours. As mentioned, Dodò’s name has resurfaced here, having been closely followed in the past and now once again considered a solid prospect on Roma’s radar. His profile is intriguing due to his ability to provide attacking thrust, experience, and knowledge of the Italian league, qualities deemed essential to immediately raise the team’s level. This revival is also being favored by Napoli’s recent cooling of interest, which has reduced competition for the Brazilian full-back.

Team Liquid Alienware's "world-class" moments finding consistency ahead of MSI decider with LYON
Jo "CoreJJ" Yong-in celebrates Team Liquid Alienware's 3-0 sweep of Clouid9 Kia at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz.TEMPE, Ariz. – Jo "CoreJJ" Yong-in has seen everything an experienced League of Legends player can. He’s earned individual awards, winning the LCS MVP award twice. He played against and with some of the best players in the world, including the iconic mid-laner Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok. He’s represented Korea at the Asian Games. He’s even claimed a League of Legends World Championship in 2017.So, his words carry weight when assessing his team's potential. At LCS Lock-In, where the team failed to qualify for an international event, Jo saw glimpses of brilliance from his teammates during scrimmages that gave him confidence that the team had the right players and skills to compete at the international level.“Some of the plays we are making are definitely world-class, but we are not consistent yet,” Jo said prior to the season. “Our level is quite low compared to the other top teams. I will try to help, so we can consistently make good plays, so that we can beat them.”Team Liquid is making those plays a bit more consistently, stringing together a trio of series wins to earn a spot in the Mid-Season Invitational in Daejeon, South Korea. Their seed will be determined following their matchup against LYON at 1 p.m. at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz. The winner advances directly to the bracket stage, while the loser must navigate a daunting four-team play-in bracket featuring all the second seeds from four other regions.“The only thing I want right now is to win the final [today] and be the support player on the [first-place] team,” Jo said.Translating it on stageTeam Liquid earned the reputation of being a strong scrimmage team at LCS Lock-In. The results, however, didn’t match the reputation. They were on the brink of missing the LCS Lock-In Playoffs completely, defeating Dignitas in a one-game playoff for the final playoff spot. They managed to defeat Disguised in the lower bracket, but ultimately fell to the inevitable champion, LYON.It did give the team a point of emphasis to work on in the time leading up to the Spring Split.“We have really talented players, and sometimes our tempo doesn't match well,” Jo said. “So even during the scrims right now, the way we are winning is through more coordinated play as a team.”But even after Team Liquid got off to a strong start, winning their first five matches, there were still moments where the team didn’t play connected.“We made a bit too many mistakes. For our standards, so we're making sure why we are playing aggressively, we're nailing down getting perfect,” Jo said. “We know we cannot be perfect, but we are trying to get close to perfection.”Team Liquid limped into the playoffs, losing back-to-back games to close out the regular season, but the best was still to come for Team Liquid.Fluidity emergesTeam Liquid drew LYON in the opening match of the Spring Playoffs but fell into the lower bracket after a 3-2 defeat. They rolled in their first lower-bracket series, defeating Shopify Rebellion 3-0. Team Liquid followed it up with a 3-1 win against Flyquest, setting up a bout with Cloud9 Kia for a spot at an international on the line. They dominated, rolling to a seamless 3-0 victory against the undefeated regular-season champion in a complete team effort with the team playing well from top to bottom.Jungler Brandon Villegas finished second in MVP voting, behind Philippe “Vulcan” Laflamme. The award meant little to Villegas, who has been relaxed and been a stable force in the roaming position, especially with his attitude.“When I play, I just enjoy the series,” Villegas said. “I try not to think too much, ‘I must win him no matter what.’ … It’s been working out for us.”Mid-laner Lim "Quid" Hyeon-seung emerged as a stable force in the middle. Throughout the playoffs, Lim has 58 kills with 20 deaths and 81 assists. Additionally, Team Liquid is unbeaten if Lim doesn’t sustain three or fewer deaths.“I feel pretty good. We enjoy playing with each other,” Lim said. “I’m happy.”Park "Morgan" Ru-han is in his first season in the LCS after coming over from Korea. He played in his first playoff stage game, admitting that there was a small bit of nerves against Cloud9.“After Game 1, I just enjoyed the game and the mood,” Park said. “It was exciting to play today.”Jo credits Park for being flexible about how much impact he can have on a game.“‘Morgan’ is always very reliable,” Jo said. “Even though he’s in a bad situation, he doesn’t get tilted. He always has a good vibe, in general, in the game and out. Individually, he’s strong. He’s the type of top laner that every team wants. He will carry if he gets resources. He will get the job if he doesn’t get resources.Jo’s bottom lane partner Sean "Yeon" Sung, who is taking things one step at a time, has seen the team improve and is in the right position to finish the job and get a free bye into MSI.All in all, it was just a matter of time before a group of five players consistently made the right choices and felt like a cohesive team.“I would say the reason for our failure to be more connected has to do with being somewhat of a newer team. A lot of our ideas really clashed against each other at the start,” Sung said. “The vision that we saw in the game was not the same. But I think as time goes on, we keep talking about how we want to play the game, and I think we've aligned very well compared to the start of the year.”Something to proveJo watched First Stand in Sao Paolo, Brazil, through streams following Lock-In.He witnessed Europe’s G2 Esports’ biggest win against one of Korea’s top teams, Gen.G., in bracket play to earn a spot in the grand finals.“Watching the first stand, I was very jealous of the G2 doing well,” Jo said. “Even the CBLOL teams are doing well in the Americas Cup. It’s a bit of a shame that we didn't make it [last split].”Now with an opportunity to showcase its talents to LYON and beyond, Team Liquid isn’t passing up the chance to make some noise at the international level.Paul Delos Santos covers esports for The Sporting Tribune. The two teams have held meetings with Bouaddi's representatives in a bid to lure him to the Premier League.Paris Saint-Germain are also in pursuit of the Moroccan, with Lille aware of the considerable interest.TheLigue 1 side are understood to value Bouaddi at around €70m (£60.4m), and hope a bidding war can take the final fee past the £72m club-record sale that took Nicolas Pepe to Arsenal in 2019.Lille reportedly prefer to sanction Bouaddi's sale to a foreign side in a bid to avoid strengthening a direct rival.

Leverkusen tipped to sell at least one central midfielder this summer
Leverkusen tipped to sell at least one central midfielder this summerKicker.de are reporting that Bayer Leverkusen will offload at least one defensive midfielder over the course of the summer transfer window. From a sporting perspective, Exequiel Palacios is the midfielder who, based on his profile, has the most secure place in the starting eleven. However, his compatriot Equi Fernández is deemed to be the first candidate for sale in the middle third area for the Rhinelanders.Fernández's refusal to be substituted on in the final minute of the 1-0 win in Dortmund to waste time has jeopardised his status.Meanwhile, Aleix Garcia could become a transfer candidate, but likely only if a lucrative offer comes in for the Spaniard. It remains to be seen how Tillman's status, who was determined to leave under Hjulmand, will develop under new head coach Martinez. Premier League clubs like Fulham are showing interest in the USA international, and a sale can't be ruled out of the price is right.

Let's find out. What games are on today?Germany v CuraçaoCuraçao are making their World Cup debut later today and what a match to do it in.Germany are tournament heavyweights but despite being knocked out in the group stage the last two tournaments are in a nice groove under coach Julian Nagelsmann.Expect a fair few goals in this one.Our prediction: Germany 6-0 CuraçaoNetherlands v JapanNetherlands are the World Cup bridesmaids and that could very well be the case again here.Japan come into this tournament as a true force and may well surprise a few people this summer. Who wins Netherlands vs. Japan? AI predicts every World Cup game today
Sunday Funday on the world stage. The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues on June 14 with another quartet of games on the slate, kicking off with Germany and Curacao in Houston. It's a day that will also feature one of the most intriguing games of the first round, with the Netherlands and Japan facing off in the Group F opener. No one will secure a spot in the next round with a win, but every team has a chance to make an early statement on Sunday. So who does artificial intelligence (AI) have winning? We asked Microsoft Copilot to make score predictions for every game and give a reason to stand behind that pick.Below is a look at Copilot's score predictions for Sunday's games, and a translation of the chatbot's analysis of each game.AI predicts the 2026 World Cup: June 14 matchesGermany 4, Curacao 0AI's take: Copilot noted that there is a large gap between the talent level of the two squads, adding that Germany will control possession to create clear-cut chances throughout the match. The chatbot pointed out that the score could be higher, but it expects Germany to ease the pressure once the game is won and instead elect to rest key players. Our take: If David vs. Goliath was being played in the World Cup, it would be this match. Curacao is making its World Cup debut on June 14 as the smallest nation to ever qualify for the tournament with a population of about 158,000 people. Against one of the greatest teams in the world, this isn't a fair fight – at least on paper.Netherlands 2, Japan 1AI's take: Copilot prefers Netherlands' depth and individual talent compared to Japan. It noted that, while both teams are strong defensively, the Dutch backline and midfield have a better chance to control the match. Our take: The two frontrunners to advance out of Group F meet with the idea that a deep run in the tournament awaits. It should be one of the better games in the group stage and a close contest figures to be on tap.Ecuador 2, Ivory Coast 1AI's take: Copilot believes in Ecuador's advantage in the midfield and the team's strong defense. Those two things, the chatbot says, will tilt the match in Ecuador's favor. It considers the group stage contest to be, "close, physical, and competitive."Our take: Defense is on the menu when these two sides meet and the expectation is that the margins should be minimal. A few chances can make all the difference. Sweden 1, Tunisia 0AI's take: Copilot believes that Sweden will control the tempo of the match with a defensive structure that is hard to break down, adding that Tunisia's attack is inconsistent and that will leave few chances to score for both teams. The chatbot said that it will be a "cagey, tactical match where Sweden’s structure and set‑piece strength make the difference."Our take: Both teams have some work to do to catch up with Netherlands and Japan in Group F. A loss could ruin either team's chances of advancing out of the opening round. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Predicting every World Cup game today using AI

    Bengals' realistic contention window analyzed
The Cincinnati Bengals want to win right now. Everyone has seen Joe Burrow’s quotes about the “window being his whole career” and similar comments. But the Bengals have moved like a team this offseason that wants to win right away. The big trade for Dexter Lawrence highlights this, to say the least. Realistically, though, the next few years are smack in the middle of Burrow’s prime. That’s why Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon suggested a 1-6 year window as prime Super Bowl contention years for the Bengals.Gagnon wrote: "Not sure this Bengals core can survive a fourth consecutive non-playoff season without major changes that cloud the future. But if Joe Burrow and Co. put it back together in 2026, we could have the recipe for runs well into the 2030s."Notably, the Bengals’ urge to win right now with Burrow makes for an interesting hot seat conversation around Zac Taylor. Regardless, the Bengals have done a good job of managing their cap space while moving like a modern franchise this offseason. That leaves them wiggle room to keep making big splashes that keep the window open for years to come. Keep in mind, though, that Burrow turns 30 in December, so a six-ish year estimation and the overall urgency both make plenty of sense. This article originally appeared on Bengals Wire: Bengals' realistic contention window analyzed

Looking ahead at 5 big Steelers training camp position battles
As the Pittsburgh Steelers roster currently sits, several positions are thin where the starter is established and there isn't much behind them, several spots are much deeper and we are looking forward to some big positional battles when the team gets together at training camp. Here are five of our favorites to watch.CornerbackAsante Samuel Jr. vs Daylen EverettWe went into mincamp assuming the No. 2 outside cornerback on either side would be Asante Samuel Jr. but the rookie Daylen Everett has come on strong and will put him for reps in camp.Right guardSpencer Anderson vs Brock Hoffman vs Gennings DunkerRight now, the veteran Anderson has the starting right guard job but we are rooting for the rookie Gennings Dunker to come on strong in camp and take the starting job before the start of the regular season.Right tackle Dylan Cook vs Max IheanachorWe haven't heard much from first-round pick Max Iheanachor but Dylan Cook seems to have settled in at right guard. Wide receiverGermie Bernard vs Roman WilsonBernard has wowed at minicamp as a rookie and Roman Wilson is fighting for redemption after a rough start to his career. Running backJaylen Warren vs Rico DowdleWarren is the incumbent but we don't think new head coach Mike McCarthy cares about that after bringing in Dowdle, who has played for him before. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: Looking ahead at 5 big Steelers training camp position battles

Former NFL defensive end Smith dies aged 36
Aldon Smith registered 228 tackles, 52.5 sacks, and 103 quarterback hits in 75 regular-season games [Getty Images]Former NFL defensive end Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36.The San Francisco 49ers, who selected Smith as the seventh pick of the 2011 Draft, confirmed his death, but the cause has not been revealed.Smith spent four seasons with the 49ers, helping them to three NFC Championship Games, and a season apiece with the Oakland Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys. He played 75 regular-season games in his career and retired in 2023."We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith," read a 49ers statement."Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organisation, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen."Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into."Smith was named in the NFL's all-rookie team in 2011 after registering the second-most sacks (14) by a rookie in a single season since 1982.The following season he was selected for the Pro Bowl and earned first-team All-Pro honours. However, his career was disrupted by off-field issues, with multiple arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI), possessing illegal weapons, and domestic violence.Smith was suspended in 2014 after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy before being released by the 49ers in 2015 following a DUI arrest.Joining the Raiders later that year, he made only nine appearances before receiving an indefinite suspension for substance abuse. He missed the 2016 and 2017 campaigns and was released by the Raiders in 2018.Smith returned to the NFL with the Cowboys in 2020 - he made 16 starts - and had a fourth-month stint with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021 without making an appearance.NFL fixtures and resultsGet American Football news sent straight to your phone

Barcelona World Cup spotlight: A tough outing for Raphinha and Brazil
Barcelona World Cup spotlight: A tough outing for Raphinha and BrazilIt took three days, but Barcelona finally had one of their players step onto the stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.After a quiet start to the tournament from a Barça perspective, Saturday finally gave supporters a reason to keep a closer eye on the action. Raphinha was the only Barcelona player involved on the day, starting for Brazil in their Group C clash against Morocco. It was a packed day of football, with four games spread across 12 hours and plenty of drama across the tournament.Switzerland and Qatar opened the day with a tense 1-1 draw, a result that will have frustrated the Swiss after they wasted several chances and allowed Qatar to snatch a late equaliser. The headline fixture came next, as Brazil faced Morocco in one of the most anticipated games of the group stage so far. The match began with real energy and promise, but gradually lost its edge as both sides settled for another 1-1 draw.Scotland then marked their long-awaited return to the World Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti. It was an emotional occasion for both nations, with Scotland appearing in the tournament for the first time in 28 years and Haiti ending a 52-year wait.Turkey and Australia brought the day to a close in the final fixture of the matchday. For Barcelona fans, though, the main focus was clear. Raphinha finally became the first Barca player to feature at this World Cup, and his performance against Morocco offered a mixed but interesting start to his campaign.Raphinha could not inspire Barcelona to a victory. (Photo by Darrian Traynor/Getty Images)Here is how the Brazilian winger got on.Raphinha vs MoroccoRaphinha’s display against the AFCON champions had plenty of effort, as is always the case with the Brazilian, but not enough of his clinical edge. The Barcelona winger went the distance against Morocco, in a game that never really settled into the rhythm one would have expected from Carlo Ancelotti’s side.Brazil had 51 per cent possession, 1.27 xG, five shots on target and 22 touches in the Morocco box, but the performance still felt short of real control. For Raphinha, the game was frustrating. He finished without a goal or an assist, and his clearest moment came late in the second half.Vinicius Jr., the goalscorer on the night, squared a cross-field ball to him, and his shot was comfortably saved by Bono. This, in essence, was Raphinha’s night. He was heavily involved and offered a lot of energy, but he was just not decisive enough. It was not a worrying performance, but with the Barcelona man one of the protagonists for Brazil alongside Vinicius Jr., it was not the kind of display they expected from him.A frustrating outing for Raphinha. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)Raphinha’s value at Barca has often come from his intensity, pressing and directness but also his ability to step up when the lights shine brightest. Against Morocco, he had the work rate, but that was it.Part of it also has to come down to the structure. Brazil struggled badly in midfield during the first half, and Morocco’s pressing made it difficult for the wide players to receive clean service.Raphinha started the game on the left, moved to the right, then to the No. 10 position and even played as the striker, not allowing him to settle into one position.Despite all this, there is a positive angle. Raphinha played the full game, stayed physically sharp and Brazil’s next fixture against Haiti could be the game where he comes into the tournament. This was not a disastrous start for Raphinha. It was a quiet one. Hopefully, it was the calm before the storm.
