How a hospital dream transformed adaptive mountain biking
Tom Wheeler's prep for a mountain bike ride is a little different to most.As well as putting on his helmet and gloves, he straps on a one of a kind arm brace - a piece of adaptive technology he built himself.Fifteen years ago Tom lost the use of his right arm in a crash at a race in Rheola, near Neath in south Wales."Right at the end of a track my hand caught a branch and I went flying over the handlebars," he said."It was a huge impact. I just assumed I'd dislocated my shoulder. Then we realised that I couldn't feel my right arm."In fact, Wheeler had pulled out 80% of the nerves connecting his right arm to the rest of his body, losing sensation and movement. But even from his hospital bed, Wheeler was plotting his return to the sport he loves.Tom Wheeler designed his arm brace with the help of the suspension company he worked for at the time [BBC Sport]Dreamt up in hospital"The brace was something I dreamt up in hospital. I just pictured myself with this arm brace and getting back to doing what I always did," he said.Working with colleagues at the suspension company where worked at the time, Wheeler created the first prototype of his brace, which is based on a mountain bike damper - part of the suspension system. "It was about three days since I got back home and I was already in the garage having a look at my bike and working it out," he said."I was familiar with other riders who'd had similar injuries and they'd set their bikes up to use with just one hand. It wasn't easy."Wheeler has spent around 15 years perfecting his design, and it features Velcro to keep his fingers in place, shoulder strapping to keep him stable and an emergency release in the event of a crash - something he has tested extensively."There's nothing worse than being strapped to your bike when you're going down with it," he adds.Former Wales Para-athlete Morgan Jones had a prosthetic hand made for him [BBC Sport]Worldwide appealSince first creating his brace, Wheeler's design has received global attention."It became really super apparent early on that this stuff doesn't exist. Almost instantly I'd got people reaching out going 'I want what you've got'," he said."So that's kind of what I've been trying to aim to do. Just get people riding on adaptive set-ups all around the world."One of those is former Wales Para-athlete Morgan Jones. After finishing fourth in the T47 100m track sprint at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast, Jones discovered mountain biking during the Covid pandemic. Jones said: "I was getting into riding myself and starting to look for advice or support on how to get the most out of riding with one arm. This has transformed my riding."Jones uses a one of a kind hand, designed by Wheeler: "This integrates into my existing prosthetic and then gives me control on the (handle) bar that I didn't have before. "I currently have the title of top tester, which means I'm the most frequent crasher!"Jones said the technology has transformed the way he rides."I feel so much more confident with it, able to keep up with my mates in a way that I never have before," he added.Meanwhile for Wheeler, 15 years on from the crash that changed his life, things are better than ever.He said: "I still have to pinch myself. I can do stuff now I never thought would be possible."

Noussair Mazraoui announces himself at the world cup, and the Moroccan press took notice
Noussair Mazraoui announces himself at the world cup, and the Moroccan press took notice Brazil versus Morocco was a match that most Manchester United fans never wanted to miss. And indeed, what an exciting contest it turned out to be. Despite ending 1-1, the end-to-end action left many entertained and, moreover, the match lived up to the hype.Man United were well represented, tooInitially, Matheus Cunha and Casemiro were both expected to start for Brazil. However, Carlo Ancelotti only handed Casemiro a starting berth, while Cunha had to settle for a place on the bench before being introduced in the second half to deliver a decent cameo.Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui, who had been an injury doubt in the lead-up to the game, passed a late fitness test to earn a starting spot for Morocco, and he certainly impressed. As covered in The Peoples Person’s World Cup coverage, Mazraoui was a force to be reckoned with. In fact, the way he kept Raphinha in his pocket needs to be studied.Moroccan press react to Noussair Mazraoui’s performanceAs influential as he was, the United full-back received praise from the Moroccan press, with Sport.le360 best capturing the complete performance he delivered, handing him an 8/10 rating:“Mazraoui has once again confirmed he is world-class and his importance in the Moroccan system. Very solid in the duels, he was able to respond to the Brazilian offensives while providing his technical quality and his ease with the ball in the possession phases.“Valuable in the construction of the game, he was at the origin of the action that led to the opening of the Moroccan score, thanks to a key pass that launched the offensive movement.“Precise in his choices and always available, he delivered a complete match against the Selecao.”Consequently, United fans will have left impressed by what they saw from Mazraoui, though one thing remains obvious: such top performances in a United shirt have been a rare sight.Carrick needs this Mazraoui to show up next seasonYes, he has delivered in patches: the games against Chelsea last season spring to mind, but his persistent injury absences have robbed him of any real consistency.Mazraoui is a fantastic player, of that there is no doubt. Ultimately, if he can return to United next season and reproduce the kind of influential display he produced in that World Cup opener, he will be a massive asset to Carrick’s revolution.Feature image Michael Regan via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. 'He said it's fine': Shubman Gill reveals Rohit Sharma's reaction after costly mix-up in Afghanistan ODI
Shubman Gill has revealed what Rohit Sharma told him after their costly mix-up resulted in the former India captain's run-out during the first ODI against Afghanistan, saying the veteran opener brushed aside the incident after watching the replay.Rohit was looking in ominous touch before a misunderstanding with Gill brought his innings to an abrupt end in the sixth over of India's chase in Dharamsala on Saturday. The dismissal briefly threatened to derail India's pursuit, but captain Gill's unbeaten 84 eventually guided the hosts to a comfortable seven-wicket victory.Speaking after the match, the Player of the Match disclosed that Rohit had no complaints about the unfortunate incident."He saw the replay, he said it's fine. Even in the last match that we played against Afghanistan, T20s, he got run out there as well," Gill said during the post-match media interaction.Rohit had scored 16 off 16 balls, hitting two fours and a six, and shared a brisk 46-run opening partnership with Gill in just 5.4 overs before the mix-up ended his stay.Gill's reference was to an earlier mishap against the same opponents in January 2024, when a mix-up between the two in a T20I in Mohali had resulted in Rohit being run out for a duck in the opening over.Gill shines as India overcome Gurbaz masterclassThe rain-hit contest was reduced to 25 overs per side, and India initially appeared to have Afghanistan on the ropes after reducing the visitors to 26/3.However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz launched a sensational counterattack with a superb century, stitching together a 116-run stand with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi to take Afghanistan to 194 all out in 24.5 overs.Gill admitted that India had briefly lost control of the game due to Gurbaz's brilliance."The way we started, they pulled the game away from us. Gurbaz was brilliant and took the game away from us, but we fought back well," Gill said.Debutants impress as India take 1-0 leadIndia's comeback was engineered by debutants Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey, who claimed three wickets apiece. Gill reserved special praise for both bowlers, highlighting their ability to bounce back under pressure."Gurnoor, the way he bowled with the new ball and then came back at the death. Harsh as well, the way he came back after conceding 16 runs in his first over," Gill said.He stressed the importance of controlling the middle overs in ODI cricket, saying maintaining pressure with the ball and rotating strike while batting are key principles discussed in team meetings.Gill then capped off a memorable outing with a match-winning unbeaten 84 off 66 deliveries, while Ishan Kishan contributed 34 and KL Rahul blasted an unbeaten 39 off just 19 balls.Their efforts helped India chase down 195 in 22.5 overs and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. 131716248

Commanders' WR battle one of most interesting ahead of training camp
Will the Washington Commanders make a big addition to their wide receiver corps before the 2026 season? That question has followed the Commanders since March after their unsuccessful attempts to sign free-agent receivers Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs. Washington did sign a pair of free agents, Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson. It's a return home for Brown, who played his first four seasons with the Commanders before signing a one-year deal with the Jaguars last offseason. Brown had his best NFL season in 2024, coinciding with quarterback Jayden Daniels' record-breaking rookie season. The most important member of Washington's receiver room, Terry McLaurin, is back and completely healthy this offseason. New offensive coordinator David Blough is on record saying he wants to get McLaurin at least 10 targets per game in 2026. That's great news. Another newcomer to Washington's WR room is rookie third-round pick, Antonio Williams. The Commanders are excited about Williams, given his ability to play inside in the slot or outside. Also returning in 2026 are Treylon Burks, Luke McCaffrey, and Jaylin Lane. There is a lot of potential here, but, at least for now, a true standout No. 2 opposite McLaurin, which is why there has been so much talk surrounding the Commanders and Brandon Aiyuk, once the 49ers eventually release him. That potential, combined with the Aiyuk intrigue, is why ESPN's Ben Solak called Washington's wide receiver battle one of the 10 best in the NFL to watch in minicamps and training camp. Washington has struggled with WR depth behind Terry McLaurin for years now. Last year's solution -- Deebo Samuel -- remains a free agent as the Commanders search for a more dynamic alternative. A free agent or trade (Brandon Aiyuk?) could still fill the spot, but the Commanders need someone to emerge from this smattering of veterans and recent middle-round picks. Williams, the 2026 third-rounder, is the one to watch with his high ceiling and inside/outside versatility.GM Adam Peters addressed the position this offseason. However, his pursuit of pricier options like Pierce shows just how committed he was to adding more receiver help. The potential Aiyuk move feels like a matter of when — not if — he's released by the 49ers. Until then, players like Burks, McCaffrey, Brown, and Lane can use next week's minicamp and training camp to show Peters that the Commanders will be just fine at receiver. Solak was right: this is an interesting battle. A player to watch early is Burks. The former Titans first-round pick is finally healthy and will have the chance to show the Commanders he can be a quality No. 2 receiver. Monken holds off on Browns QB1 as healthy Watson and rising Shedeur Sanders turn heads
Monken holds off on Browns QB1 as healthy Watson and rising Shedeur Sanders turn heads originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Cleveland walked away from its offseason program without resolving the one issue that matters most: who will line up behind center when the season opens. Offensive coordinator Ken Monken handed first-team snaps to both Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders during OTAs and minicamp, came away encouraged by each, and still declined to anoint a winner. His reasoning is rooted less in indecision than in evidence he simply doesn't have yet. Padless practices, he believes, cannot replicate what a starting job demands.Watson's physical comeback stands out. He looks recovered not only from the Achilles tear but from the shoulder problem that ended his 2023 campaign and required surgery that November.Notably, he appeared readier to attack downfield than during his last stretch of meaningful football. Sanders, meanwhile, grew steadier inside the scheme as the weeks passed, with the staff crediting sharper footwork and quicker reads. Here lies the wrinkle most coverage glosses over: Monken's patience is itself a verdict. By refusing to pick, he's signaling that neither passer has disqualified himself, which is rarer than it sounds for a team this unsettled at the position. He'd prefer to crown a starter by training camp yet feels no urgency."It would feel different if I didn't feel like their progression hadn't gotten to this point where I think they both can start and play winning football," Monken said. "I'm convinced of it. And I'd say it if I didn't. I mean, I can't decide now because I think both have earned the opportunity to continue to compete once we put the pads on."Why pads, pass rush, and preseason will decide the Browns' quarterbackThe next layer of evaluation will look nothing like spring drills. Monken wants to watch both quarterbacks operate against a genuine pass rush, in pads, and possibly across preseason games before committing. That preference reframes the whole competition: spring told him who could function, but only contact will tell him who can win.An unexpected window into Sanders' progress arrived off the field. On his Speakeasy podcast with Emmanuel Acho, former NFL running back LeSean "Shady" McCoy relayed intel from a teammate of the rookie."I had a chance to talk to Jerry Jeudy, and he was saying, 'right now, Shedeur looks really, really good. You can tell he's getting more comfortable in the offense, comfortable in the scheme, comfortable for not being in college and actually being a pro,'" McCoy said.Strip away the obvious part of that scouting report, and one phrase carries real weight. Of course, a young passer grows easier with a new system by the day; that's expected. The meaningful piece is his adjustment to professional life, a transition that cuts deeper for Sanders than most. He spent his entire college run playing under his father, Deion Sanders, and his first season away from that orbit exposed how unprepared he was. What he did about it matters. The tape from a year ago fell short, he knew it, and he spent the offseason grinding. If the reports about his growth hold true, he's positioning himself for a real shot.More Browns news:Todd Monken missed NFL head coach photo thanks to getting a haircut for said photoWhy Shedeur Sanders is changing Browns jersey to No. 2 after wearing 12Browns back out of A.J. Liverpool have no plans to make Mo Salah U-turn
Liverpool have no plans to make Mo Salah U-turnLiverpool have no plans to reverse the decision to let Mohamed Salah leave this summer, despite change in head coach at Anfield.Salah announced that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the campaign, following nine decorated seasons with the club. Though the Egyptian is contacted until 2027, a mutual decision was made to allow Salah to pursue a new challenge as a free agent.Salah’s exit comes following a downturn in performances in 2025/26, in addition to a strained relationship with former Liverpool manager Arne Slot. However, the decision to sack Slot and appoint Andoni Iraola has led to suggestions a U-turn on Salah’s future could take place. This week, Egypt teammate Ahmed El-Shenawy suggested that “things could change”.El-Shenawy told ON Time Sports: “The prospect of leaving Liverpool has affected Mo psychologically, but the situation might change and he could still stay with the team,“He even told me that he doesn’t know anything about his future yet.”Journalist Ben Jacobs has shut down those suggestions and has said Liverpool have ‘no plans’ to keep Salah next season. The 33-year-old has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League and Turkish Süper Lig side Fenerbahce. New Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildrim claimed he could bring Salah to the club, while director of football Ertan Torunogullari said ‘positive talks’ have been held with Salah’s camp.Read – Italian clubs express interest in Liverpool winger GakpoSee more – World Cup Day 3: Brazil unconvincing, Scotland end wait, Swiss snoozefestFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

Qatari mediators travel to Tehran for final touches on a possible deal to end war
A woman walks past an anti-American mural on the wall of the former U.S. Embassy, now a museum, in Tehran, Iran, Friday, June 12, 2026. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi)2026-06-14T09:48:23Z ISLAMABAD (AP) — Iran and the U.S. inched closer to a deal to end the Iran war, as Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran on Sunday to finalize the agreement, according to two regional officials. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, expressed cautious optimism that the U.S. and Iran were finally approaching an agreement that could halt hostilities that have killed thousands of people and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, whose closure has thrown world markets into disarray.U.S. President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Saturday that the deal would be signed on Sunday, while Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said it could happen in the coming days. Trump said that the Strait of Hormuz would open immediately after the signing. The deal is expected to be signed electronically, without an in-person ceremony, though it’s unclear when or how the signing will take place. Nuclear and other issues still to be finalized The deal does not solve the thorniest issues between the U.S. and Iran, including Iran’s nuclear program or its frozen assets, but offers a 60-day framework for technical discussions on those issues, according to Pakistani and regional officials familiar with the ongoing negotiations who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The officials described Pakistan’s monthslong effort leading the negotiations, struggling to keep both sides from walking out of the room and a total collapse of the negotiations on multiple occasions.Under the current deal being discussed, U.S. and Israel appear to have fallen short of their original goals of destroying Iran’s missile and nuclear programs and ending its support for proxies. It is not clear how the deal will address these issues, or if they will be part of the final agreement.Meanwhile, Trump was expected to discuss demining the Strait of Hormuz during the Group of Seven summit that starts Monday. The waterway is crucial to significant shipments of oil, natural gas and related products like fertilizer, and its effective closure rocked the global economy. The apparent breakthrough came after Iran exchanged fire with the U.S. and Israel earlier in the week, threatening to rupture the ceasefire and push the Middle East back into full-scale war. A tenuous ceasefire has been in place since April 7. Read More Iran’s nuclear program and highly enriched uranium have long been at the center of tensions with the U.S. and Israel and an international source of concern. Trump on social media asserted that “when all is calm,” the U.S. would go in and “downblend and destroy” the enriched uranium in Iran or in the U.S. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Iran has 440.9 kilograms (972 pounds) of uranium that is enriched up to 60% purity, a short, technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90%, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.Iran has long maintained its nuclear program is peaceful and has not publicly committed to giving up the enriched uranium, which is believed to be buried under three nuclear sites that were badly damaged by U.S. strikes last year. Iran wants Lebanon included in the deal Meanwhile, fighting has continued in Lebanon between Israel, which has pushed its invasion deeper than at any point in over a quarter-century, and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group despite a ceasefire.Iran has wanted a ceasefire deal to include the fighting in Lebanon. Tehran also has sought the release of billions of dollars in frozen funds. The deal in its current form is a deep disappointment to Israel’s government, which has been sidelined in negotiations led by Pakistan and others. Even critics in Trump’s own Republican Party, struggling with an unpopular war ahead of the midterm elections, criticized the deal. Some said it did not improve on the terms of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that Trump withdrew the U.S. from during his first term and which he still describes as “bad.” __Magdy reported from Cairo and Lidman from Tel Aviv, Israel. Interview | Elye Wahi says Ivory Coast ‘can be one of the favourites’ for the World Cup
Interview | Elye Wahi says Ivory Coast ‘can be one of the favourites’ for the World CupIn the aftermath of OGC Nice’s 4-1 win over AS Saint-Étienne, which guaranteed the club’s place in Ligue 1 for next season, and just hours before his departure for the FIFA World Cup, Get French Football News spoke with Elye Wahi (23).You arrived at Nice in January and your goals have ultimately kept the club in Ligue 1. How would you evaluate your return to France?Honestly, there were highs and lows. I got injured too, and so that stopped my momentum, but in any case, I managed to come back in time to help the team, and that’s the most important thing. Thanks to your goals with Nice (18 games, seven goals), you arrive at the World Cup in top form. Do you think you can go far in the competition? We will do everything to do just that. We mustn’t set ourselves limits on what we can do and give everything that we have in every match. Is it a dream for you to compete in a World Cup?It’s a dream and, at the moment, it doesn’t feel real. I think it will be the moment that I step onto the pitch that it will feel real. Who do you think are the favourites?I think that there are several. Are we one of them? I think the Ivory Coast is one, or at least we can be. This interview is a repost from Get French Football News and can be found HEREGFN | Luke Entwistle – reporting from Nice

Why Omar Artan will receive full World Cup fee despite being denied USA visa for tournament
Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesOmar Artan will still receive his World Cup fee, even though the Somali referee’s tournament ended before he ever reached the pitch. That matters because Artan was not removed for performance, fitness or discipline. He was blocked by an immigration decision, and FIFA now appears to be separating that from the appointment he had already earned.Omar Artan will receive World Cup fee in gesture from FIFAIn a BBC MOTD post, it was reported that Artan will receive his full tournament fee despite being unable to officiate at the World Cup.“Somali referee Omar Artan, who was denied entry to the United States to officiate at the World Cup, will receive his full tournament fee. Sources told BBC Sport that even though Artan will take no part in the World Cup, FIFA has committed to paying his salary. Referees do not know the actual fee they will receive for officiating at the World Cup, which is paid after the tournament is over.”No concrete public explanation has been given for why FIFA made that decision. The likeliest reading is that this is a goodwill gesture and a recognition that Artan’s World Cup place was lost through a visa and entry process outside his control.Photo by Abuukar Mohamed Muhidin/Anadolu via Getty ImagesReports say Artan had been selected for the tournament, traveled through Istanbul to Miami, was questioned for hours, and then denied entry. U.S. authorities cited vetting concerns, while FIFA said immigration decisions sit with host governments and that Artan’s status would not be changed.Omar Artan’s career will thrive despite losing World Cup chanceThe optics were brutal for FIFA and the United States because Artan was not just another official. He was set to become the first Somali referee to work at a men’s World Cup, had been named Africa’s best male referee, and had recently handled the CAF Champions League final.Somali officials and critics argued that the decision undermined football’s fairness and global image. The backlash grew because no detailed evidence has been publicly released to support the most serious suggestions around the denial.UEFA then moved quickly to give Artan another elite stage. The governing body appointed him to referee the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg on August 12, with Aleksander Ceferin framing it as a show of respect for his ability. That appointment does not replace a World Cup dream, but it does protect Artan’s standing.FIFA paying the fee now does something similar. It cannot undo the missed matches, the public embarrassment, or the lost historic moment for Somalia. It can, however, make clear that Artan is being treated as a selected World Cup referee whose absence was not his professional failure.Read more:How much England’s stolen World Cup training gear was worth as two men chargedUSMNT star Tyler Adams reacts as New York Knicks win first NBA Championship in 53 yearsHow to Watch Sunday’s World Cup Fixtures in the UK, Including Germany vs Curacao

NBA mock draft 2026: Who should OKC Thunder select with No. 12 pick?
The OKC Thunder has three picks in the 2026 NBA Draft, which will be from June 23-24.OKC owns picks No. 12 (via the Los Angeles Clippers), No. 17 (via the Philadelphia 76ers) and No. 37 (via the Dallas Mavericks). It's looking to add to a roster that reached the Western Conference Finals this past season. There's a chance that the Thunder doesn't use all three picks since roster spots are limited. It could package some to move up in the draft or trade for future picks. But in this article, we'll look at five prospects OKC could select with pick No. 12:More: 2026 NBA Draft workout tracker: Who have OKC Thunder targeted?Who should Thunder select with No. 12 pick in 2026 NBA Draft?Nate Ament, TennesseeAment fits a player prototype that every team is looking for. He's a 6-foot-10 forward with a 6-11.5 wingspan, and he's a capable ball handler and shooter. Of course, his game still needs to be polished. The 19-year-old wasn't efficient in his lone season at Tennessee, going 39.9% from the field and 33.3% from deep, and he isn't a very aggressive finisher around the rim. But OKC develops young talent as well as any team in the NBA, and it could have a gem on its hands if it can maximize Ament's potential.Aday Mara, MichiganMara is another prospect with elite measurements. He's a 7-3 center who boasts a 7-6 wingspan and a 9-9 standing reach. That alone is enough to get a team's attention, especially an OKC team that just had its hands full defending San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama. And while Mara could certainly help in that matchup with his rim protecting and rebounding, there's also an impressive level of skill to his game. He has good floor vision and passing skills at his position. Mara still needs to get stronger and be more physical, but the potential is there.More: Five biggest questions for OKC Thunder entering 2026 NBA offseasonYaxel Lendeborg, MichiganOKC's wings are really guards who can size up defensively, from Lu Dort to Jalen Williams to Alex Caruso. It could use someone with more traditional size, and Lendeborg could be that guy. He's a 6-9 forward with a 7-3.25 wingspan, and he can defend multiple positions. Lendeborg is also a great connecting piece on offense, capable of making passes and spacing the floor. He even shot 52.9% from 3-point range in his last 11 college games. Lendeborg is 23, but that shouldn't deter an OKC team that has plenty of young talent. He's someone who could plug in and play right away.Morez Johnson Jr., MichiganJohnson is another intriguing Michigan product. He's a bit undersized as a 6-9 forward/center, but he makes up for that with a 7-3.5 wingspan. He also has a valuable combination of speed and strength, making him a switchable defender. Johnson is mostly a play finisher on offense. He's a rim runner and a putback pro, which helped him shoot 62.3% from the field as a sophomore last season. Johnson is still working on extending his range and reading the floor better with his passes, but his defensive versatility and energy would make him a good fit in OKC.Hannes Steinbach, WashingtonSteinbach is a bruising big man who averaged 11.8 rebounds as a freshman last season, which led all Division I players. He's immovable down low, and that also helps him finish around the rim with good efficiency. But Steinbach isn't all brute force. He has solid mobility, good touch and even some upside as a floor spacer. The latter will be a key part of his development, along with becoming a better rim protector. Still, his work on the glass could help an OKC team that has struggled in that department, and his offensive skills at that size are promising.More: Here's what OKC Thunder GM Sam Presti said during end-of-season news conferenceJustin Martinez covers the Thunder and NBA for The Oklahoman. Big Ten program now a 'legitimate threat' to land 2027 5-star CB
Texas A&M's ongoing battle to land 2027 five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson will reach its conclusion in the coming weeks, knowing that the blue-chip defender will announce his commitment on Wednesday, July 1, but one of the top programs out of the Big Ten has laid out the red carpet this weekend, which could make things interesting down the stretch.Michigan has been the program to watch since the Aggies received a prediction to land Dobson, and under new head coach Kyle Whittingham, the Wolverines have been even more aggressive, taking advantage of their blue-blood status and development background at the cornerback position. Still, most recruiting experts, including Rivals insider Chad Simmons, still like the Aggies' chances, but it's getting tight."The Aggies still have the edge, but Michigan has become a legitimate threat to make this one interesting."After taking his A&M OV, some, including myself, believed that Dobson was close to shutting down his recruitment and committing to the Aggies, but as we've seen with several of the Aggies' 20 commitments in the class, taking every official visit has become a trend, and no one can blame Dobson for wanting to take advantage of his once in a lifetime chance to visit one of the most historic college football programs. Third-year coach Mike Elko has not been shy in stating that Dobson is essential to completing the elite secondary haul that already includes safeties Kamarui Dorsey and JayQuan Snell, paired with five-star cornerback Raylaun Henry. This is definitely something to watch, but right now, I agree with Simmons that the Aggies still lead the charge. World Cup: Calhanoglu in action for Turkey
World Cup: Calhanoglu in action for TurkeyIt was a disappointing start to the World Cup for Hakan Calhanoglu and Turkey, who lost 2-0 to Australia at BC Place in Vancouver. The Socceroos secured all three points thanks to goals from Irankunda in the 27th minute and Metcalfe in the 75th, leaving Vincenzo Montella’s side frustrated after a night in which they struggled to find a way through Australia’s well-organised defense.Making his World Cup debut, Calhanoglu became the second Inter player to feature at this year's tournament. The midfielder was also making his first start in nearly two months, having last been named in the starting XI in Inter’s Coppa Italia semifinal against Como on April 21. He played the full 90 minutes, trying to pull the strings in midfield and spark Turkey’s attack, but Australia defended stubbornly to preserve its lead. The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when Okon-Engstler threaded a pass to Irankunda. The Watford forward burst clear and beat Cakir. Turkey responded by taking control of possession and pinning Australia back in its own half, but despite creating pressure and firing in several attempts on goal, could not find an equaliser. Instead, the Socceroos doubled their advantage in the 75th minute, as Metcalfe drilled a low left-footed effort into the corner from outside the area to put the result beyond doubt.Turkey will return to action on Saturday 20 June, at 05:00 CEST, against Paraguay in a match that could already prove crucial in the race for qualification from Group D. The United States and Australia currently top the group with three points each.TURKEY'S UPCOMING FIXTURESTurkey vs Paraguay, Saturday 20/06, 05:00 | World Cup 2026 Group Stage | Santa ClaraTurkey vs USA, Friday 26/06, 04:00 | World Cup 2026 Group Stage | Inglewood

OKC Spark's AUSL debut serves as reminder of franchise founder's impact
Tina Floyd squatted down and locked her eyes on the big screen in right field as the Oklahoma City Spark’s pregame hype video rolled. It might’ve been the only time the professional softball team’s founder stopped moving in the hour before the franchise made its AUSL debut. Wearing her blond hair back in a ponytail, her white Spark shirt and her sneakers, she was there to work. There was no time for reflection. No time for sentimentality.“Later,” Floyd said. But whenever that time came, after the mascot wrangling and the ticket system fixing and the million other things that Floyd found herself doing Tuesday night, here’s hoping she realized this: Oklahoma City wouldn’t have a seat on the pro softball rocket ship that is AUSL without her.Four summers ago, Floyd decided she wanted to own a pro softball team in OKC, but the league the Spark first joined was on shaky ground and the first season was difficult. Floyd ultimately decided to leave Women’s Professional Fastpitch and be independent. Two more difficult years followed. But this past offseason when the AUSL decided to capitalize on the success it had and add two more teams, the Spark was the league’s first call.More: Meet 2026 Oklahoma City Spark players for inaugural AUSL season“She took a leap of faith on her own and decided to start a pro team,” said Spark coach Amber Flores, who has been with the franchise from the start and has become close with Floyd. “We’ve been through the ups. We’ve been through the really hard times. We’ve been through the moments where we weren’t sure we would ever end up here.”On Tuesday, the move to the AUSL became real.Playing in front of a packed house at Oklahoma Christian University’s Tom Heath Field, the Spark made quite a statement in its season opener.Spark 13, Volts 5 in six-inning, run-rule fashion.Floyd, of course, was excited about the result, but really, the opener was about more than rookie Maya Johnson getting the complete-game win or superstar Maya Brady going 3 for 4 with a grand slam and five RBIs.“Just seeing how well the athletes are treated and the difference in this next level has just been amazing for us to watch here,” Floyd said.“They have good benefits. They have health insurance. They have everything to help them play this game longer and be more professional. That’s been probably the greatest thing for me to see.”Player well-being has long been near and dear to Floyd’s heart. Before the Spark’s first season in 2023, when funds were limited and futures were unknown, Floyd launched a nonprofit to pay for childcare for any player. That first year, she only had one taker: Keilani Ricketts, the former Oklahoma superstar who had just had her first child, Lizzo.More: OU softball legend Tiare Jennings brings 'calming factor' to Volts in AUSLBut if not for Floyd and the Spark being willing to cover care, Ricketts might not have returned to competitive softball. She is still playing, by the way, pitching now for the AUSL’s Blaze. That’s exactly the type of impact Floyd hoped to have.“I want that to be the standard,” she said back in 2023. “It should be a standard that women do not have to take a backseat just because they have a family.“It’s not a soapbox. It’s a passion for me.”Trying to do right by the players, no matter the circumstance, has been Floyd’s guiding light. It’s why she left the WPF. Why she went independent, then stayed that way for a second season, even when it was difficult to find opponents and sponsors, stability and optimism.“I don’t think the Spark could’ve gone on much longer just independently,” Floyd said. “Just because that wasn’t world-class softball.”She stopped herself.“It was,” she corrected. “We faced some amazing opponents. But to have (the AUSL) behind us, it’s just going to keep growing our brand.”More: Former OU softball star Sydney Romero savors facing sister in AUSL season debutA few weeks ago, Floyd went to Texas to visit family, and as they were watching NCAA softball tournament games on ESPN, a commercial for the AUSL came on. Many of the league’s games will be broadcast on ESPN’s family of networks this summer.During the spot, Floyd saw some familiar faces in familiar jerseys.“That’s the Spark,” she suddenly realized. “That’s my team!”That moment hit her like nothing else had.“My dad, who can barely make it out to the ballpark, can now sit at home and watch the game,” she said. “It was such a weird a-ha moment.”It was surreal and big and weighty. But at the same time, the day-to-day of running a fledgling franchise in a still-up-and-coming league brought Floyd back to reality. There was a water leak at the office last week that had to be fixed. Then on Tuesday night before the game when the ticket-taking software went down just as the gates were opening and the Oklahoma wind tried to pull the Sephora tent out of the ground, Floyd was in the middle of it all.More: OKC Spark No. 1 overall pick Maya Brady is new face of AUSL entering 2026 season“Oh, I saved some lives,” she joked when she told her staff how she grabbed one of the tent poles and held on for dear life. And when she saw rookie pitcher Peja Goold’s dad looking anxious and standing at the gate to a restricted area of the park, Floyd immediately perked up. He wanted to see if Goold was in the bullpen but didn’t have the right credentials.“Wait right here,” she said. “You’ll be with me.”After taking the team mascot, Moxie, to meet with some young fans, Floyd returned and walked to the bullpen where waves were exchanged and photos were taken.“Your daughter’s in the pros,” Floyd said to Goold’s dad when he thanked her for the access. “I’m here for it.”Truth be told, Tina Floyd has been here for all of it. All of OKC’s pro softball journey. All the ups and downs. All the milestones, too.Nothing, though, has been bigger than this move to the AUSL.“To see today, for it to all come together and know where we started and know what she built,” Flores, the Spark coach, said after the opener, “this one’s for her.“She’s earned every moment of this.”Jenni Carlson: Jenni can be reached at jcarlson@oklahoman.com. What do the stats say about Scotland's win over Haiti?
Scotland won their opening match at the World Cup for the third time (also 1974 and 1982). All three times they won their first match they were top of the group after one matchday with all three groups also featuring Brazil. This was Scotland's fifth World Cup win, their first since a 2-1 victory over Sweden in 1990 – also their first ever with only one goal scored in the tournament.Scotland have kept a clean sheet for the fourth time in a World Cup match (W2 D2) – three of them were against opponents from the Americas, including this 1-0 win over Haiti and 0-0 draws against Uruguay in 1986 and Brazil in 1974.Angus Gunn is the third Scottish goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at the World Cup, following David Harvey (twice in 1974) and Jim Leighton (1986).Haiti recorded their best defensive performance in goals conceded (1), shots faced (9), shots on target faced (2) and expected goals conceded (1.05) in their four-match history in the World Cup.At 31 years, 238 days old, John McGinn is the oldest player to score for Scotland at the World Cup, surpassing Kenny Dalglish (31y 103d) v New Zealand in 1982.Scotland had more possession (59% to 41%) and total attempts (6 to 3) until McGinn opened the scoring. However, after the 29th minute, Haiti dominated possession (60% to 40%) and had more total shots (12 to 3).Andy Robertson led Scotland in touches (68), passes in the final third (18) and line-breaking passes in the final third (6). He also had Scotland's joint-most chances created (2).

Leicester close in on Martin appointment
Russell Martin played for Wycombe, Peterborough, Norwich, Walsall and MK Dons during his career [PA Media]Russell Martin is close to being appointed Leicester manager. The former Scotland defender, 40, is due to return to management for the first time since being sacked by Rangers in October.A final decision was due this weekend.Leicester were keen on appointing Martin last summer before he joined Rangers. The Foxes went on to appoint Marti Cifuentes, who was sacked in January after six months in charge.Under interim boss Gary Rowett, Leicester dropped into League One, suffering back-to-back relegations after their Premier League demotion in 2024-25.They were docked six points for breaching English Football League financial rules.Martin lasted only 17 games at Rangers - he was sacked when they were eighth in the Scottish Premiership - and had a number of options this summer.Martin, who has also managed MK Dons and Swansea, led Southampton to the Premier League by winning the Championship play-offs in 2023-24.He will be Leicester's seventh manager in just over three years since the departure of Brendan Rogers in April 2023.

Trump tried to block state AI regulations, but some states are forging ahead
Flanked by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, left, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, second right, and White House AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks, President Donald Trump displays his signed AI initiative in the Oval Office of the White House, Dec. 11, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)2026-06-14T09:07:26Z HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Six months after President Donald Trump warned states not to regulate artificial intelligence, they are increasingly doing just that.Congress has stalled on producing federal regulation of artificial intelligence as states forge ahead and scrutinize how chatbots interact with children, how AI systems are used by employers and what developers must do to try to prevent an AI-caused catastrophe.State lawmakers have stepped back from earlier, wider-ranging attempts to regulate AI that were vetoed or otherwise derailed by governors who viewed the measures as too onerous toward the industry’s development, including efforts to hold developers accountable for bias in AI systems. But they are returning with legislation that is more targeted and, often, probes the corners of life where Americans interact with AI but may not know it. Presidential power versus state powerTrump’s move to restrain states’ actions on AI drew criticism from members of both political parties and civil liberties and consumer rights groups who worried that banning state regulation would amount to a gift to AI giants, who enjoy little to no oversight.Trump has made AI a top national and economic security priority, and he said that letting states clutter the regulatory playing field for an industry that’s spending trillions of dollars and driving the economy is too risky in the race with China for AI superiority.Trump issued an executive order that directed the attorney general to create a task force to challenge state laws that are more than “minimally burdensome,” and directed the Commerce Department to draw up a list of problematic regulations. It also threatened to restrict funding from a broadband deployment program and other grant programs to states with AI laws. The White House said it wouldn’t target state laws that seek to prevent fraud and protect consumers and children. Read More In the meantime, the Trump administration released a “national policy framework” in which it urged Congress to preempt state AI laws that are out of step with its regulatory worldview and to pass legislation to protect children, intellectual property rights and free speech. In recent days, a new bipartisan draft proposal in the House met withering criticism from key Democrats and Republicans. The White House has given no indication that it has made good on its threat to enforce the president’s executive order by going to court against a state’s AI law or withholding money. In a statement, it said the Trump administration is “eager to work with partners” to enact its policy framework. States seem largely unrestrained by TrumpTrump’s executive order didn’t seem to discourage states from trying to regulate how AI is used. More bills have been introduced this year than last, including by Republicans, said Justine Gluck, policy director of the Future of Privacy Forum, a nonprofit that advocates for data privacy in technology and whose members are from industry, academia and civic groups. In Illinois, legislation on the desk of Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker piggybacked on elements of laws passed last year in California and New York that require developers of large advanced AI models to create protocols to prevent their systems from causing a catastrophe, such as a biological weapons attack, power outage or large-scale hack. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. Illinois added a requirement that AI developers must get an independent auditor to review whether they are complying with their own policies. Analysts see it as a step toward requiring AI developers to take greater accountability for their products. The bill’s sponsor, Democratic state Sen. Mary Edly-Allen, brushed aside Trump’s threat.“I don’t know if you’ve met Illinois, but we’re pretty independent,” Edly-Allen told The Associated Press. The bill drew nearly unanimous support, signaling a willingness by members of Trump’s party to cooperate with Democrats in filling the AI regulatory vacuum left by the federal government. This kind of legislation is expected to expand to other states. Regulating chatbots, especially for childrenA growing number of states are imposing restrictions on how AI chatbots can interact with people, especially children. A mix of Republican- and Democratic-led states have passed such laws this year, including Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska and Oregon. In many cases, states want companies to tell people when they are interacting with AI instead of a human. Many want chatbots to be restricted in how they interact with minors, parents to have control over their child’s access, and data given to chatbots to be kept private. In recent weeks, Connecticut enacted provisions for companion chatbots that sustain an ongoing relationship with a human. Under them, chatbots must not be able to interact with someone under 18, unless it is programmed against encouraging self-destructive behavior and provides parents with tools to manage the child’s use. Transparency in AI and decision-makingColorado in May required companies that deploy AI systems in important areas such as employment, education, housing or banking to tell people when it’s being used to influence a decision about them. It was a stab at regulating what researchers say is the bias inherent in AI systems that sort through a consumer’s data and render consequential decisions — including who gets hired, a home loan or medical care. But it watered down a 2024 law aimed at preventing AI’s penchant to discriminate, amid pressure from Democratic Gov. Jared Polis. In Connecticut, lawmakers required employers who are using employment-related AI systems to tell employees or job applicants that they are interacting with AI.Meanwhile, Connecticut, Washington and Utah required AI developers to embed data into digital content that will allow users to determine whether the content — such as photos or video — has been created or altered by AI. More laws are possible this year.In California, lawmakers are advancing the “No Robo Bosses Act of 2026” to prohibit employers from relying solely on AI to fire or discipline workers, and an expansion of how the state regulates AI chatbots, including banning chatbot outputs to children from being used for advertising. Some Republican-led states have held backIn Florida, the state House refused to advance what Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis called his AI “Bill of Rights” legislation. It included provisions to give parents control over their children’s access to companion chatbots and to require companies that use chatbots to tell consumers when they are interacting with AI instead of a human.Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez said Trump had made it clear that the federal government should be in charge of AI regulation. DeSantis panned that idea, noting that the federal government isn’t acting. In Utah, progress stalled on legislation modeled on laws in New York and California after the White House sent a one-sentence memo to lawmakers there to warn that it was “categorically opposed” to the bill.___Follow Marc Levy at http://twitter.com/timelywriter MARC LEVY Levy covers politics and state government for The Associated Press. Early results show Swiss voters reject right-wing’s bid to cap population at 10 million
A poster reading "Isolate ourselves from Europe? Certainly not now! - No to the SVP/UDC Chaos initiative" featuring images of President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, urging people to vote against the Swiss People's Party (SVP) referendum titled "No to a Switzerland with 10 million inhabitants" photographed in Lausanne, May 27, 2026. (Laurent Gillieron/Keystone via AP)2026-06-14T06:09:27Z GENEVA (AP) — Voters in Switzerland have cast their final ballots on Sunday on an initiative championed by the top right-wing party to cap the rich Alpine country’s population at 10 million. Early results showed Swiss voters were leaning against it.The populist Swiss People’s Party, which has the most seats in parliament, has stirred up and fostered anti-migration sentiment over the years, notably about an influx of workers from the neighboring European Union. Critics call the bid a self-inflicted wound, saying the boom in migration over the last generation has brought foreign labor and skills to sectors such as healthcare, finance, pharmaceuticals, and technology. Some also worry the proposal, if approved, will weaken critical ties with Brussels. The EU is Switzerland’s top trading partner.Recent polling from the gfs.bern agency suggested that it could be a close contest. Preliminary results shared by the federal government showed that nearly 54% of voters rejected the proposal, with turnout exceeding 57% nationwide. Results were still pending from many of Switzerland’s 26 cantons. The Swiss People’s Party put forward the “sustainability initiative” measure, saying Swiss infrastructure, housing, social programs, natural resources and way of life have been strained by demographic growth. The federal government and Parliament oppose the idea.Swiss democracy gives voters a direct say in policymaking through referendums typically held four times a year. Most ballots are cast through the mail, and in-person voting ends at noon local time on Sunday. Read More A “yes” vote would require the Swiss government to take action to cap the population by 2050. If the population reaches 9.5 million before then, the government would be forced to restrict asylum, family reunification and residency permits, and may have to scrap Switzerland’s EU deal on the free movement of people. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has reported that Switzerland had a foreign-born population of 32% as of 2024, behind only Luxembourg and Australia among the group’s 38 member countries. International migration has long been a sensitive issue in Europe, as nations grapple with an aging population and increasing anti-foreigner sentiment. While that sentiment in other European countries centers on migrants from the developing world, most foreigners in Switzerland are Europeans.Since Switzerland and the EU eased restrictions on citizens living and working across their borders in 2002, the Swiss population has grown by 23%, to 9.1 million as of the end of last year. Economic output has also increased, up 24% over the same period, government data show.Swiss voters have repeatedly tackled the immigration issue over the last half-century. Only one such referendum — “Against mass immigration” in 2014 — narrowly passed, after campaigners stoked fears about overpopulation and rising numbers of Muslims in the country. While many countries have limits on immigration, none has ever voted to limit its population, Swiss experts say. Ukrainian drone strikes kill 1 and spark fire at oil facility in Russia
Servicemen of Ukraine's defense intelligence set up the Peklo (Hell) missile drones against Russian in an undisclosed location in Ukraine late Thursday, May 28, 2026. (AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky)2026-06-14T09:45:38Z A Ukrainian drone attack killed one person in Russia’s southwestern Oryol region, local officials said Sunday, while a separate strike hit an oil facility as part of Kyiv’s campaign of strikes on military and energy targets deep inside Russia. Oryol regional Gov. Andrei Klychkov said Sunday that one person died and nine were wounded when a Ukrainian drone struck a residential building overnight in the regional capital, also called Oryol.Local authorities in Russia’s Yaroslavl region, around 700 kilometers (440 miles) from the Ukrainian border, said fuel storage facilities caught fire after being hit by a drone.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country’s forces had “struck an oil facility that was important for the reserve of the aggressor state” in the Yaroslavl region. Ukraine has stepped up its attacks on Russia’s oil and gas facilities in recent months, arguing the energy sector funds and directly fuels Moscow’s more than four-year invasion. Meanwhile, Britain is investigating a sanctioned tanker that is suspected of being part of the Russian “shadow fleet,” shipping oil in violation of international sanctions over Moscow’s war on Ukraine, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Sunday. British armed forces boarded and detained the vessel, the Smyrtos, on Sunday in the English Channel, in what the country’s Defense Ministry called “the first U.K.-led operation of its kind.”Russia is believed to be using a fleet of hundreds of ships to evade sanctions over its war against Ukraine.“This operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin’s war in Ukraine that they cannot hide,” Starmer said.

Downtown Geneva boards up as drastic security tightens ahead of anti-G7 protests
Construction workers board up a shop window, ahead of expected protests for the G7 summit, in Geneva, Switzerland, Monday, June 8, 2026. (AP Photo/Baz Ratner)2026-06-14T06:00:09Z GENEVA (AP) — Scores of shops and businesses in downtown Geneva boarded up their storefronts with wooden panels ahead of planned anti-G7 protests on Sunday. French and Swiss authorities have imposed extensive security measures as U.S. President Donald Trump and other leaders attend a G7 summit of leading industrialized nations starting on Monday. There are concerns the gathering could trigger violent unrest. The June 15-17 summit of some of the world’s richest nations being held in the French town of Evian-les-Bains, on Lake Geneva, is meant to discuss the Middle East, Ukraine and global economic imbalances. Activist groups including environmentalists, feminists and foes of capitalism have called for a big demonstration later Sunday. A flotilla of around 20 boats appeared on Lake Geneva off the coast of Evian on Saturday, displaying anti-G7 and pro-Palestinian banners. Some 20 protesters were detained on Friday evening, according to Swiss media reports. Earlier, between 100 and 150 people had gathered in Geneva for a protest bicycle ride, slowing down traffic and chanting anti-G7 and pro-Palestinian slogans, public broadcaster RTS reported. Business owners and local leaders are worried of a repeat of violent protests that smashed storefronts on the sidelines of the G8 summit in 2003, when Russia was in the club of nations. Local resident Robin Hedz lamented the “mess” and expressed bafflement about the “wood-wall everywhere,” while acknowledging the memories of the trail of damaged property at the summit over a generation ago. Read More The Swiss government said the army will deploy some 4,000 personnel to support police during the summit. Operations will include airspace and road restrictions as well as patrols on Lake Geneva. Seven of the 35 roadway border crossings will remain open. Geneva also is closing a major park where activists wanted to congregate. France will deploy more than 13,000 police and gendarmerie officers to ensure security in the summit area just across the border. Over 800 French border control officers will be active, up from about 60 normally. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. French gendarmes buzzed around in motorboats off the coast of Evian on Saturday, and one officer hoisted up a bulky drone-interception device in a display of the security measures being rolled out for the summit.Protests are nothing new around such elite gatherings. This time, activists want to demonstrate frustration with Trump’s leadership on issues as diverse as tariffs, the war in Iran and the climate, or even highlight his past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.“We are very afraid of the policy and the politics of Mr. Trump and also of the other leaders of the G7, because they are fighting, making war all over the place,” said Francoise Nyffeler, spokesperson for the NoG7 coalition, which has organized the demonstration and march on Sunday. “The planet is in danger and we are very scared about it and we want to protest and say that the people of the world are against their policies,” she added.

In Tijuana, Iran's tiny diaspora agrees on little — except Team Melli
By Emily Green and Herbert Villarraga TIJUANA, Mexico, June 14 (Reuters) - Some 25 miles (40 km) south of the U.S.-Mexico border, nestled between taquerias in the suburbs of Tijuana, hangs a flag in the Mexican colors of green, white and red. But its design is far from common in these parts. Inside is what owner Saied Assadi says is only the second Iranian restaurant ‌in all of Mexico. "Food is one of my passions," he said when Reuters visited this week, as he served up a traditional Iranian platter of rice, grilled tomatoes, mixed meats and salad. But not ‌all Iranians in the area are eager to visit Assadi's restaurant. The Iranian community in Tijuana only numbers about 20 people – out of a city population of some 2 million. Even in this tiny community, however, differing politics epitomize the split in the diaspora and the challenges facing the Iranian team on the eve of their World Cup campaign. Dara Makoipour, an Iranian who moved to Tijuana in 2018, is put off by the flags that decorate Assadi's restaurant. "We have different views," said Makoipour, who prefers to cross the border to eat at Iranian restaurants in California. Featuring a lion and sun motif, the flag decorating Assadi's restaurant was Iran's national flag before the 1979 revolution and is associated with the country's previous Shah-led government. It has become a subject of controversy ahead of the World Cup, as supporters attempting to take it into stadiums may breach FIFA rules restricting political paraphernalia. In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, security denied entry to fans carrying the flag. Asked about Iranians ‌who find the flag off-putting, Assadi said: "Whether that person wants to come eat Iranian food or not because of the flag, that's his choice. Some people are extremists." But there is something that unites Makoipour and Assadi, and that is their support for Iran's soccer team, known colloquially as Team Melli, or "national team" in Persian. TIJUANA: AN UNUSUAL CHOICE Uncertain about whether the U.S. would issue the team visas with the two countries at war, the Iranian squad announced last month it was relocating its training base from Arizona to Tijuana. The selection made some sense. This Mexican border city is relatively close to the team's group-stage games in Los Angeles and Seattle, and Mexico was happy to host. Still, for a squad representing a country where alcohol is banned and women are required to wear hijabs, a city famed for strip clubs and gambling dens was a bold choice. If the team had doubts, they seemed to be assuaged by the warm welcome they received from supporters when they arrived at 5 a.m. last Sunday, nearly four hours behind schedule. Since then, a small number of fans have gathered outside the hotel every day ‌seeking autographs. "Tijuana and especially the Mexican people – they've been amazing," Iran national soccer player Saeid Ezzatollahi told Reuters. So far, Team Melli hasn't ventured far. They are traveling with a private chef, Mexican soldiers guard their hotel, and their only excursions have been by chartered bus to a nearby stadium to train. LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT The Iranian community in Tijuana is so small it doesn't even register on the census - a stark difference from nearby Los Angeles, which boasts the largest Iranian community outside of Iran. But Sadegh Galavi said he felt immediately at home when he and his wife visited in 2022 from Tehran. "Literally, we fell in love with Mexico," he said. "And then Tijuana makes me feel that there is a lot of opportunity to work, to do many things, to build a life." Galavi found a job after seeing a car on the street with vanity plates that read TEHRAN. He left a ‌note on the windshield; the owner turned out to be Makoipour. Galavi is now a mechanic for an auto restoration business Makoipour owns. Makoipour and Galavi were ecstatic when they heard the team was coming to Tijuana. "As long as the other side" – the U.S. – "doesn't give them a hard time, the rest is going to be easy peasy," Makoipour said. FIRST MATCH On Sunday, the team will travel by private plane to Los Angeles one day ahead of their first World Cup match, against New Zealand. Support staff and soccer federation members denied U.S. ‌visas will stay behind, including the team supervisor, analysts and press liaison. The U.S. State Department has said it will not allow the Iranian team to "abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the U.S. under false pretenses." Iran's ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, responded that the Trump administration believes "anybody who doesn't think the same as them is a terrorist." The Iranian flag remains a flashpoint. A California non-profit has filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent any restrictions on bringing the pre-revolutionary flag into stadiums, under freedom of expression protections. FIFA previously directed Reuters to its stadium code of conduct, in which it prohibits any flags "of a political, offensive ‌and/or discriminatory nature." FIFA didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about the lawsuit. Assadi, whose restaurant displays that flag, said he believes the Islamic Republic is "not giving people the freedom" they deserve. But he will be cheering the national team on Monday, regardless of his – and the team's – political views. "Pretty much everyone in Iran plays soccer," he said. "I hope all Iranians will support the team as soccer players." (Reporting by Emily Green and Herbert Villarraga; Editing by Stephen Eisenhammer and Rosalba O'Brien)

Three thoughts from Scotland's win over Haiti in the World Cup
FOXBORO — The night transpired as expected.Scotland found a welcoming start to its World Cup run at Boston Stadium vs. Haiti. Scotland’s return to the tournament, after nearly 30 years away, saw its fans fill each corner of Boston Stadium on Saturday night. John McGinn provided the winning goal in a 1-0 result that surged Scotland to the top of the Group C table.Scotland’s alternate red kits dotted Boston Stadium in an unintentional nod to the New England Patriots and the football team’s success in the building. It certainly had the backing of a crowd of 64,146 and returns to Boston Stadium on Friday, June 19th for Game 2 against Morocco. Haiti meets Brazil on Friday at Philadelphia Stadium. For more on Scotland vs. Haiti, read on below:Scotland did what it needed toScotland couldn’t leave the first night of the tournament without three points. Brazil and Morocco are the tougher sides in the group and a win against Haiti was a necessary result to advance to the knockout round.McGinn struck in the 28th minute as he returned a rebound past Johny Placide. The initial shot from Che Adams found McGinn just beyond the penalty spot as the midfielder settled with his right foot and knuckled in the winner off Haiti's Jean-Ricner Bellegarde for the advantage.Ben Gannon-Doak initiated the sequence from the right side — a spot Scotland found success in over the first 45 minutes. Scott McTominay, from Gannon-Doak, nearly announced himself to the tournament in the 17th minute with a strike that clipped the right post.McGinn’s goal, though, was all Scotland needed to book a win in its first appearance since 1998. And Scotland’s second win in last 12 World Cup games (2-1 vs. Sweden in 1990 group stage).Haiti plays tough despite lossThe second half provided a different experience for the Haitians. They weren’t the underdog that trailed in their first World Cup appearance since 1974 and just second overall. Scotland was tagged with three yellow cards over the final 45 minutes. Frantzdy Pierrot’s header that was pushed wide in the 85th minute nearly equalized in a nervy finish.Haiti finished with more shots and matched Scotland with two attempts on target. It was dangerous on the counterattack and could’ve left Boston with a draw. The Haitians might not win a match in this tournament with meetings against Brazil and Morocco on deck. But neither side should enter those matches believing that it’ll walk to three points.Group C after the first nightScotland jumps atop the table with the win. Brazil and Morocco’s 1-1 draw earlier in the day sandwiches the two powers with Haiti rounding out the group.Brazil and Morocco, on goals from Vinícius Júnior and Ismael Saibari, are in position to advance if the rest of the group slate plays to its billing. Scotland’s never advanced to the knockout round in eight tries at the World Cup. A win vs. Morocco, at a welcoming stadium, would ensure history for the Scottish. This article originally appeared on The Providence Journal: Final result from Scotland and Haiti in the 2026 World Cup

WNBA gameday discussion: Is your favorite star one of the league’s most gifted grifters?
Breanna Stewart. | NBAE via Getty Images Just yesterday, our Eric Nemchock highlighted how the Phoenix Mercury, despite their disappointing overall record, are, in fact, winning. They’re winning the foul game, as the Mercury, led by Alyssa Thomas, are drawing fouls at a high rate, while committing them at a low rate. As Eric notes, free throw rate is one of the “Four Factors,” meaning one of the four areas of the game that some analysts believe most influence winning. Such wins aren’t coming for Phoenix. At least not yet. And on Saturday night, they lost both the game and free throw game to the Los Angeles Sparks in an epic overtime thriller. We could watch AT and ones all day, like seriously pic.twitter.com/OuZJmY9ehT— Phoenix Mercury (@PhoenixMercury) June 14, 2026Phoenix’s situation, however, does not nullify the overall importance of the foul game, especially in a WNBA now overflowing with whistles. More than ever, drawing fouls is a valued skill, earning teams extra possessions and points. That means being a grifter is a good thing. Yes, “grifter” often is applied as a pejorative, an unsavory accusation fired by the fans of a team that is being felled by a player who is drawing tons of fouls and living free throw line. Yet, when the players on those same fans’ team find themselves benefitting from the blowing of whistles, every drawn foul is, naturally, well-deserved. Sunday’s two-game WNBA slate features of a number of players who, fair or foul, frequently are finding their ways to the line. So, let’s take a moment to appreciate some of the most gifted grifters in the W. In the comments, share your thoughts on whether or not you see foul drawing as a skill. And be sure to also share who you think will draw the most fouls on Sunday.Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty): 8.1 free throw attempts per gameCan Breanna Stewart seal the New York Liberty’s spot in the Commissioner’s Cup championship game from the line?Since the Washington Mystics, the Liberty’s opponent on Sunday afternoon, commit an average of 23.1 fouls per game, the the third-most in the league, and thereby send their opponents to the line 24.5 time game, which also is a top three mark, that might be a safe bet (3 p.m. ET, NBA TV).The current league-leader in free throws per game, Stewie is taking and making the most of her career, not only getting to the line over eight times per game but also drilling a career-best 89.5 percent of her opportunities. She also owns the two highest free throw-attempt games of the seasons, with games of 21 and 17 free throws.Another milestone for Stewie 📈With this free throw in the third quarter, Breanna Stewart passes Angel McCoughtry (1,512) for fifth place on the WNBA’s all-time free throws made list.2026 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup presented by @coinbasepic.twitter.com/twwJ7EpXzJ— WNBA (@WNBA) June 9, 2026Stewart’s enhanced foul drawing is a testament her willingness to adapt in order to win. As her 3-point shot continues to trend the wrong direction, she’s maintained her offensive productivity by scoring in whatever way is necessary. As she put it after her season-high 21 free throw game against the Indiana Fever:Listen to me. We didn’t shoot the ball well? Like, f*** it. Honestly, we want to win games, whether they’re pretty or they’re ugly, and that’s going to be the separator down the lineBreanna Stewart: "Listen to me. We didn't shoot the ball well? Like, fuck it. Honestly, we want to win games, whether they're pretty or they're ugly, and that's going to be the separator down the line." (Q: @GeoffJMags)— Myles (@MylesEhrlich) June 7, 2026Brittney Sykes (Toronto Tempo): 7.8 free throw attempts per gameSeeing Brittney Sykes at No. 2 in free throw attempts per game should not be a surprise. Sykes’ gift for the grift has been a foundational aspect of her offensive game. Last season, when she was still a member of the Mystics and before the WNBA prioritized freedom of movement for offensive players, Beckett Harrison wrote about Sykes’ voracious free throw game. Two teams, another country and a new season later, the playbook is the same for Sykes. With a combination of power, craft and guile, she induces hacks from opponents and makes her home at the line. This season, her resume includes a 15-for-15 and 13-for-13 free throw performance, both of which were in wins for the Toronto Tempo. Brittney Sykes strikes again 🚨Count the bucket + the foul for her! She's up to 14 PTS today!CHI-TOR | League Pass | 2026 WNBA Commissioner's Cup | @coinbaseTap to watch: https://t.co/0z3uyULrWqpic.twitter.com/dpqQ1qmkhY— WNBA (@WNBA) June 7, 2026On Sunday, she and the Tempo host the team where she began her WNBA career with: the Atlanta Dream (3 p.m. ET, WNBA League Pass).Although an aggressive defensive, the Dream have succeeded in limiting fouls, sitting in the top three for the fewest fouls committed and free throws surrendered. Can Sykes cause Atlanta to deviate from their low-foul standard?Sonia Citron (Washington Mystics): 6.1 free throw attempts per gameAs a team, the Mystics take a league-leading 26.7 free throws per game, with Sonia Citron leading the squad with 6.1 attempts per contest, which is the sixth-highest mark in the league. That number is reflective of the more aggressive offensive mindset that has defined the sophomore’s season. She’s not just a shooter, although she’ll still drain a sweet game-winner. Empowered as an on-ball offensive initiator, Citron is putting pressure on defenders and forcing them to foul her. Last season, she attempted 3.4 free throws per game, with less than 20 percent of her points coming from the line. Now, over 30 percent of her scoring is via free throws. COUNT IT 😮‍💨Sonia Citron gets the bucket + the foul!WAS-ATL | League Pass | 2026 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup | @coinbaseTap to watch: https://t.co/LJYOrc0bz6pic.twitter.com/f1XHWIaVPz— WNBA (@WNBA) June 6, 2026Shakira Austin also ranks in the top 10 in free throws per game at 5.7, a career-best number that, as with Citron, is indicative of her expanded offensive role. So, fair warning, Barclays Center might be hosting a free throw fest on Sunday afternoon, with the Mystics and Liberty trading trips to the line. Allisha Gray (Atlanta Dream): 6.1 free throw attempts per gameAllisha Gray matches Citron with 6.1 free throws per game. Similarly known as a shooter, Gray has furthered leaned into her aggressive driving instincts to generate scoring opportunities, especially as her 3-ball has been a bit off to start the season.Last Sunday, when the Dream hosted Citron’s Mystics, Gray scored 12 of her 15 points at the line, unafraid to risk her goggles going askew in order to earn those points. (Lish, however, needs to start making her freebies like she did at Unrivaled, when she won the 3×3 league’s second $50k free throw challenge.)Add another milestone to Allisha Gray’s résumé. With her second made free throw of the night, Gray surpassed 1,000 career free throws made, continuing to cement her place among the WNBA’s most consistent scorers. pic.twitter.com/GGDBMxq8Qo— Atlanta Dream PR (@ATLDreamPR) May 30, 2026Angel Reese also sits just inside the top 10 in free throws per game, ranking ninth with 5.9. It’s Reese’s relentless that results in all those whistles, although Dream fans surely believe more should be going in her favor. Whereas players that operate from the perimeter may intentionally seek fouls, those committed against Reese are a credit to her effort. The only way to slow her is the foul her.Count the bucket + the foul for AR5 ⭐️Angel Reese finding her flow in the paint as she scores the and-1NYL-ATL | League Pass | 2026 WNBA Commissioner's Cup | @coinbaseTap to watch: https://t.co/qb9xEIRtdfpic.twitter.com/aTtMMLeX8W— WNBA (@WNBA) June 12, 2026Not only is Toronto a high foul team, committing 22.8 fouls per game that thus far have result in opponents shooting 23.5 free throws per game, but they also are the second-worst rebounding team in the league. Notre Dame gets crystal ball for recruit while on official visit
It’s pretty safe to say that Notre Dame football’s recruiting weekend has been successful, even though it has yet to receive a commitment. On Saturday afternoon, 247Sports Brian Dohn made a crystal ball prediction for the Irish to land 2027 defensive lineman Brayden Parks. The 6-foot, 3-inch and 305-pound Chicago native is currently on campus for his official visit, and it’s not often that you see these happening during a recruits trip. If Dohn is correct, the Irish would be landing the nation’s No. 192 overall prospect in the class according to the 247Sports Composite. Notre Dame has done a great job with recruiting its neighboring state, as it already has a commitment from Illinois top overall prospect in David Folorunsho. While more than a few of their top players highly considered the Irish, not all of them have ended up committing. However, those misses could all be put behind them if Parks lands in South Bend. Dan Burn explains what England can learn from Argentina’s 2022 World Cup success
Dan Burn explains what England can learn from Argentina’s 2022 World Cup successDan Burn believes England can take inspiration from the way Argentina “fought for each other” at the last World Cup.Argentina lifted the trophy in 2022, and Newcastle and England defender Burn says the togetherness they showed in that tournament should be an example to the Three Lions players.“We’ve made a big thing about that since the very first camp we had together, about having this brotherhood and being together and I feel like a lot of the times the team that end up winning tournaments, these are the teams who are closest,” Burn explained.“You look at Argentina and the last World Cup, you felt as if they were really fighting for each other, So that’s what we’re wanting to do. “And I think it’s hard sometimes. You don’t see each other for a long amount of time and you have quite superficial conversations. It’s normally just, hi, how are you? But it’s about trying to get to know each other on a deeper level.“So what the staff have created at the hotel that we’ve got now should help along with that. Obviously, there’s people that we’ve played together with before, which always helps. So, yes, just keep trying to build on that.”

Nottingham Forest Loanee Could Be Included in Mario Gila Package
Nottingham Forest Loanee Could Be Included in Mario Gila PackageNapoli could try to tempt Lazio by offering two players in exchange for Mario Gila, who has emerged as the Partenopei’s top target.Napoli Keen to Sign Mario GilaThe 25-year-old defender still has one year left on his Lazio contract. While Gennaro Gattuso has asked club president Claudio Lotito to keep him, a lucrative proposal could prove too enticing to resist. The Biancocelesti have reportedly set their asking price at €30 million, but they would only collect half of the figure, as Gila’s former club, Real Madrid, is entitled to a 50% sell-on fee.Since reaching an agreement with Massimiliano Allegri, Napoli have been considered as the Spaniard’s main suitors. The Tuscan manager was already planning to bring the centre-back to AC Milan before his dismissal.Napoli Could Offer Lorenzo Lucca to LazioAccording to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Napoli have two cards that could help them land Gila. The first is Lorenzo Lucca, a 25-year-old Italian striker who made the move from Udine to Naples last summer, but found limited chances at the Stadio Maradona. The giant centre-forward joined Nottingham Forest on loan in January, but only scored one goal in nine appearances.Gattuso considers signing a new striker as a top priority for Lazio this summer, and Lucca is said to be on his shortlist.Cyril Ngonge is an Alternative OptionThe pink newspaper also names Cyril Ngonge as another fringe Napoli player who has been linked with Lazio in the past. The Belgian is an inverted right winger who made a name for himself at Hellas Verona before joining the Partenopei in January 2024.The 26-year-old spent this campaign on loan between Torino and Espanyol. All in all, he contributed with a single goal and four assists in 32 appearances.

Santos secure youth ranks, speed up renewals to avoid losses
Santos secure youth ranks, speed up renewals to avoid lossesSantos has changed its approach in the transfer market and has adopted an aggressive pace to extend the contracts of its main youth academy prospects. The board’s objective is clear: to prevent the “Meninos da Vila” from earning space and recognition in the first team only to soon leave for free or for lower-than-expected fees to clubs abroad.Over the last year, Santos’ board secured contract extensions for at least 13 youth players. The coaching staff and football management have been carrying out individualized monitoring of each young player, designing specific career plans to maximize each one’s performance. The Latest Targets of This Protective StrategyThe most recent wave of renewals involved players who had been gaining prominence under coach Cuca before the break for the FIFA World Cup:Miguelito: The Bolivian midfielder had his contract extended until May 2029. Under Cuca, he was moved into a central playmaking role and responded with one goal and two assists in the last four matches.Gabriel Bontempo, Samuel Pierri and Gustavo Henrique: The trio had been used frequently by the coach, with Gustavo Henrique and Bontempo standing out as they ended the semester as starters.Robinho Jr.: The forward also renewed his contract and has been going through a tactical adaptation process similar to Miguelito’s, being tested by Cuca as a playmaker.Long-Term Contracts SecuredIn addition to the names above, Santos ensured the stay of a core group from the academy with deals running at least until 2028. The list includes:Goalkeeper: João PedroCenter-backs: João Ananias and João AlencarLeft-backs: Rafael Gonzaga and Vinícius LiraMidfielder: Pepê FerminoForwards: Mateus Xavier, Davizinho and David NogueiraOn the other hand, some names from the under-20 squad are still waiting for talks to begin over renewals, such as midfielder Vinícius Fabri, defensive midfielder Nicola Profeta, center-back Marcelo Contreras and forward Fernando Pradella (who recently made his professional debut against Chapecoense). The Past Traumas That Sounded the AlarmSantos’ urgency in registering new contracts is justified by bitter sagas experienced this decade:Kaio Jorge (2021): The club took too long to act, the forward ended up signing a pre-contract with Juventus, and Santos had to accept an immediate sale for just 3 million euros so as not to lose him for free.Marcos Leonardo (2022): A long and exhausting saga meant that the renewal agreement was only completed five months before the striker became free to sign with another club at no cost. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence.
