SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAlex Anzalone believes Todd Bowles' defense will unlock opportunitiesOne of the most intriguing additions the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made this offseason was veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone, and it sounds like he's already excited about the opportunities that await him in Todd Bowles' aggressive defensive scheme.Speaking to the media, Anzalone noted that Bowles' defense should give him opportunities to attack the quarterback and create turnovers, specifically by forcing fumbles. Throughout his career, Anzalone has established himself as a reliable linebacker capable of defending the run, dropping into coverage, and serving as a leader in the middle of a defense. But the one aspect of his game that has often gone underutilized is his ability to impact the pocket as a blitzer, where he's racked up 13 total sacks and 3 fumbles even as a primarily coverage backer.Few defensive coordinators in the NFL have built a reputation for creativity quite like Bowles. His defenses are known for sending pressure from every level of the field, often utilizing linebackers as key components of exotic blitz packages. Bowles consistently finds ways to create favorable matchups for his defenders. That could put Anzalone in a position to produce some of the splash plays that have become staples of Tampa Bay's defense over the years, much like Lavonte David did.Speaking of David, the Buccaneers are entering a new era at linebacker following the retirement of franchise legend Lavonte David. Replacing David's leadership and production won't be easy, but Anzalone brings plenty of experience and should immediately step into a significant role within the defense. His ability to rush the passer could become particularly important as Tampa Bay continues searching for consistent complementary production alongside Yaya Diaby off the edge. While outside linebackers and defensive linemen will still carry the primary pass-rushing responsibilities, interior pressure from linebackers often forces quarterbacks into mistakes. If Anzalone's early impressions prove accurate, Buccaneers fans may see much more than a traditional off-ball linebacker in 2026. They could see a defender capable of impacting games as both a tackler and a playmaker whenever Bowles dials up the pressure. This article originally appeared on Bucs Wire: Alex Anzalone is excited to be in Todd Bowles' defense in Tampa Bay0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAncelotti criticised after Endrick snub during Brazil vs. MoroccoAncelotti criticised after Endrick snub during Brazil vs. MoroccoCarlo Ancelotti has already faced backlash for his decision to leave teenage talent Endrick on the bench for the entirety of Brazil’s World Cup draw against Morocco on Saturday night, but the coach says that he will not discuss ‘individual players’, only the team’s collective performance.Brazil supporters frustrated by Ancelotti’s decision to leave Endrick on the bench against MoroccoBrazil opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco in New York: Ismael Saobari opened the scoring after 21 minutes, Vinicius Jr. provided the response 10 minutes later.Though Morocco had reached an historic World Cup semi-final in 2022, Brazil were still considered the favourites by many heading into Saturday’s showdown. A 1-1 draw was still considered slightly underwhelming by fans of the most successful nation in World Cup history.Ancelotti has faced criticism online for one particular decision he made during the 1-1 draw with Morocco, namely the choice to leave 19-year-old Endrick on the bench for the whole game while Brazil were going in search of a goal.Endrick came into the World Cup having scored five times and having provided seven assists for his teammates from 16 appearances while on loan with Lyon in Ligue 1, but the teenager had struggled to break into the Real Madrid first team under Ancelotti in 2024-25 and now some fans are concerned that the same thing is happening with the Brazil national side.NEW YORK, NEW YORK – JUNE 3: Endrick #19 of Brazil during training at Columbia Park Training Facility on June 3, 2026 in Morristown, New Jersey. (Photo by Ira L. Black/Getty Images)“I am not going to comment on individual players, I am here to talk about the team,” said Ancelotti when quizzed about his decision to leave Endrick on the bench during his post-match press conference.Still, many fans across social media still disagree with Ancelotti’s decision: “Whenever you mention Endrick, this is usually his response, even from when he was managing Real Madrid. This is unfair,” one supporter wrote on X.“Endrick wins them that game. Vini, Endrick and Raphinha should be the starting attackers,” another added.EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY – JUNE 13: Carlo Ancelotti, Head Coach of Brazil, reacts during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match between Brazil and Morocco at New York New Jersey Stadium on June 13, 2026 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPREVIEW: Japan prepare for tasty clash World Cup clash with the NetherlandsPREVIEW: Japan prepare for tasty clash World Cup clash with the NetherlandsTom Coopey, World Cup correspondentJapan kick off their World Cup campaign against Group F opponents the Netherlands when the sides meet for the first time in over a decade on Friday evening in Dallas. It’s dubbed to be one of the most intriguing group stages clashes at the 2026 World Cup, one that hasn’t been seen since 2013, with a red hot Japan facing off against one of Europe’s best sides in Ronald Koeman’s side. The Dutch head into the tournament off the back of a successful European Championship campaign, reaching the semi-finals only to be knocked out by England, yet Japan could take advantage of some flaws that arose before the tournament.Draws with Poland and Ecuador and losing to Algeria in their pre-World Cup friendlies matches has exposed their vulnerability to get hit on the break and inefficiency against teams who are notoriously tough to break down. This is the epitome of what Hajime Moriyasu’s side have been all about in the build up to a seventh consecutive appearance, with impressive victories in the build up to this game over Brazil and Ghana.Japan also became the first ever Asian side to beat England, winning 1-0 at Wembley in March when Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma rounded off a ruthless counter attack to make history for the Blue Warriors. But Japan have never beaten the Netherlands, losing a friendly match in the lead up to their 1-0 group stage defeat to the Dutch at the 2010 World Cup courtesy of a 53rd-minute striker from retired great Wesley Sneijder. It is just the form they need to carry into the tournament if they are to go through to the knockouts and potentially beyond the round of 16 for the first time in their history as a World Cup nation. They suffered some devastating news this week, however, with Liverpool midfielder Watura Endo announcing that he wouldn’t be able to feature in the tournament after a battle with a foot injury that forced his international retirement.Captain Ko Itakura stressed how important it is to remain united for tournament football, saying: “Getting united is the most important thing in these short-term competitions.”Karou Mitoma and Takumi Minamino are also unavailable for the match through injury, yet Japan could be boosted by the potential return of former Arsenal full-back Takehiro Tomiyasu to the side.On the injury front for the Netherlands, Bart Verbruggen is available after doubts over a hip injury whilst Xavi Simons and Jurrien Timber are big absentees for the Dutch after not making the finals squad through their respective injuries.Despite that, Koeman is confident heading into the tournament and believes his side have the tools at hand to put together a memorable run.The 63-year-old said: “We want to go far in the tournament. We have a strong team and we know what we need to improve to have a real chance.”Japan haven’t conceded in their last five matches, whereas Netherlands netted 27 times in their eight qualifying games. So, it could well prove to be a clash of footballing styles that’s already been seen several times so far.You would expect Netherlands to have a healthy amount of ball possession, yet Japan have been renowned for their efficiency on the ball and ability to spring fast breakaways. For more detailed reports, reaction, and analysis of the World Cup as it happens, head to our website and favourite our page on OneFootball.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTeen shot and buses torched in Manhattan after historic NBA championship win for Knicks[Reuters]A teenager was shot and buses destroyed during chaotic scenes in New York City that marred jubilant celebrations for the Knicks' historic NBA championship win.The New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94–90 in game five on Saturday to clinch the title for the first time in more than half a century. The game was in Texas, but New Yorkers took to their hometown streets in droves to toast the milestone for fans and the city.As crowds swelled into the early hours, gunfire rang out near Times Square, a 17-year-old was wounded and a school bus that had transported World Cup fans was torched. It is unclear if anyone was hurt in that incident.Knicks owner James Dolan had called for restraint following his team's victory against the Spurs in San Antonio on Saturday night."We need to tell everybody in New York that we know that they're celebrating, we want them to have a great time," said Dolan, interrupting Knicks player Josh Hart's news conference. "Please be safe. Don't get hurt, don't hurt anybody."But celebrations turned violent as fans spilling out of bars and viewing parties clashed with officers in Midtown Manhattan. In a statement to the BBC, the NYPD said crowds became "increasingly destructive" with "many incidents of incredibly reckless and dangerous behaviour".Five yellow school buses were set alight or destroyed with bats and people jumping on them, the force said. They had been used to shuttle World Cup football fans back to Times Square following a match between Brazil and Morocco.Revellers were photographed swarming and climbing on to the roofs of the buses, with some also getting inside the vehicles and posing for photos.Bystanders gathered around one of the buses, some taking pictures and videos, as it was engulfed in flames.Police cars were also targeted, the NYPD said, with some people using bats to damage them and jumping on top of them, shattering windshields.Gunshots were reported near 42nd Street and Broadway at around 02:00 EDT (06:00 GMT), prompting people to run for cover.A 17-year-old boy was shot in the foot, officials said, although preliminary reports indicated no fatalities.Other instances of disorder included four slashings and stabbings, destruction of private vehicles, people lighting fireworks in large crowds, brawls and crowds refusing to disperse, police said.Sixty-three people were arrested, the NYPD said. Charges included assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.[Getty Images][Getty Images][Reuters][Reuters]A large number of police officers were deployed in Manhattan, including some on horseback, who were tasked with dispersing crowds later in the night. Some of those out on the streets threw objects, including street cones and bottles, at police officers.Ten police officers were injured overnight, the force said, including one member of the NYPD who was punched in the face and another who was struck with a glass bottle.Earlier a party atmosphere had taken hold across the city.Emergency service workers shouted "Let's go Knicks" through loudspeakers, while strangers hugged and shook hands, and drivers honked their horns."Oh my God. It's like New Year's Eve times 20," Carol Marino, who had watched the game in a bar, told Reuters news agency."I'm so overwhelmed. I'm so happy," added Mathieu Ogno, who spoke to the Associated Press news agency at a watch party in Central Park following the Knicks' win.Official celebrations will take place in the city on Thursday with a parade and a city hall ceremony, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's office announced.[Getty Images][Getty Images][Getty Images]0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJalen Brunson pleads with Swifties to cut Monica McNutt slack after winning titleBefore the New York Knicks became champions Saturday, they had to win Game 4 of the NBA Finals in front of a raucous home crowd that included the usual row of celebrities, including one Taylor Swift. And somehow that became one of the lasting storylines after New York's miraculous 29-point comeback, all because a hot mic caught Knicks broadcaster Monica McNutt dismissing Swift's allegiance to the home team."Get out of here, girl" gave Swifties someone to direct their ire for the unfair treatment of their favorite pop star. But McNutt didn't fit the description of their usual target, according to finals MVP Jalen Brunson.jalen got a message to all the swifties pic.twitter.com/izMcwQ6UHt— sports live tweeter yadira (@jonmoxIeys) June 14, 2026"I just want to say something to all the Swifties. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)One player who has long been admired by the Nerazzurri is Nico Paz. The Argentine attacking midfielder has impressed since joining Como and continues to attract interest from several clubs. However, both Como and Real Madrid are reluctant to consider a sale. Even though his return this summer is no longer on the agenda, Los Blancos retain a strong interest in the player’s development and view him as part of their long-term plans, making any deal particularly complicated.More players on the agendaMoreover, as per the report, other Real Madrid players are also being considered as potential targets by Inter Milan. The report claims that Rodrygo Goes, Endrick and Franco Mastantuono have all appeared on the Italian club’s radar.Mastantuono could leave on loan. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images)Of those names, Mastantuono is the most realistic subjects of speculation. The youngster faces an uncertain situation ahead of the new season, with increased competition for places in Real Madrid’s attacking line.Any decision regarding his future will likely depend on manager Jose Mourinho’s assessment during pre-season.For now, there is no evidence of formal negotiations between the clubs, but Inter’s interest in several Madrid players highlights the strong relationship between the two institutions and the opportunities that may emerge during the transfer window. As the summer market gathers momentum, Rodrygo, Endrick and Nico Paz could all remain names to watch, even if any potential deal would require significant movement from both clubs before becoming a realistic possibility.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona veteran makes honest admission – ‘Every training session is more painful’Barcelona veteran makes honest admission – ‘Every training session is more painful’Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has never been the kind of footballer who hides behind predictable answers. He has always been a character throughout his illustrious career and has spent the last two seasons at Barcelona as a valuable member of the squad. The Barcelona shot-stopper, now 36, has opened up about how much harder daily training has become as the years pass. His remarks arrive at a time when Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation beyond Joan Garcia is still very much up in the air.Szczesny spoke to Polish television during his holidays and was asked whether the passage of time is easier to handle in his personal or professional life.As quoted by SPORT, he said: “In personal life, the passage of time is even a pleasant experience, something that does not happen in professional life.”Szczesny admits age is catching up with him. (Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images)Szczesny then went on to offer further insight into how difficult each training session has become. He said:“In my professional life, I will not deny that every training session is more painful for me, it is suffering. It requires much more energy from me. It takes mental energy for me to get up in the morning, my body finds it harder every day.”A veteran still willing to sufferSzczesny’s honesty is striking, but the ex-Juventus man has also made it clear that he embraces the difficulties of playing at the highest level.“It is something that I also accept as a challenge that I set myself every day: to get up, go to training and give everything,” Szczesny noted. That mentality explains why he remains valued inside Barcelona’s dressing room. Even if his body is no longer responding with the same ease, his professionalism and experience continue to carry weight.Barcelona still have decisions to makeSzczesny’s contract expires in 2027. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)Szczesny has one year left on his contract, and everything indicates that he will continue for at least one more season, but that could change in the coming weeks.Barcelona are still working through a crowded goalkeeping department, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future uncertain, several younger keepers needing clarity and Alex Remiro mentioned as a possible option.Szczesny, if he stays, will continue to be professional. Whether he is the second- or third-choice goalkeeper, he will continue to contribute a lot as a leader in the dressing room.Players like the Pole are hard to find, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him in the coming weeks.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMarcus Rashford handed United career lifeline after stunning Carrick updateMarcus Rashford handed United career lifeline after stunning Carrick update Marcus Rashford may not be quite done at Manchester United yet, following a new major update on his situation.Barcelona snubRashford spent the 2025/26 season out on loan at Barcelona, where he contributed an impressive 14 goals and as many assists across all competitions. He helped the Blaugrana retain their La Liga crown. Yet despite this, Barcelona opted against exercising the £26m buy-option to make his stay a permanent one. This clause expires tomorrow, Monday, 15 June, and there is little to suggest that Barcelona will make a U-turn.Following confirmation that the Catalan giants will not keep him, Rashford reacted by removing all mention of the side from the bio of his social media handles.A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United have no desire to welcome Rashford back. It was said that the Red Devils have instructed intermediaries to engineer a permanent exit for the forward. Clubs like Atletico Madrid, Inter Miami, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been made aware of his availability. However, The Sun report that there is a possibility of Rashford continuing at United, with Carrick open to the arrangement.Rashford latestAccording to The Sun, “MICHAEL CARRICK has left the door ajar for Marcus Rashford to resume his Manchester United career.”“Old Trafford gaffer Carrick has been in regular contact with the 28-year-old England winger.”The report also claims that Rashford has sounded out some leaders in the dressing room about a possible return. He has received positive feedback.Carrick has indicated that he is open to working with Rashford as United prepare to play in the Champions League next season and potentially mount a title challenge. It remains to be seen whether the hierarchy, led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will be receptive to the idea of Rashford returning. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJalen Brunson had the coldest response after proving Becky Hammon's theory wrongBecky Hammon wasn't the first or last person to say a small guard can't be the best player on an NBA championship team. But she certainly became the face of that theory back in 2023 after dismissing Jalen Brunson as a "1A dude" capable of leading the New York Knicks to a title. So, when Brunson was asked about that very topic after clinching the title and finals MVP for the Knicks on Saturday, it wasn't a secret who he was being asked about: "What's your message for people saying that you're not a 1A guy?" the reporter asked. But if you were expecting Brunson to pile on Hammon, you haven't been paying attention to the humble star over the years. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRemember when Jeffrey Epstein photos showed Trump with victims & Trump-branded condoms?Democrats on the House Oversight Committee today released photographs from the Jeffrey Epstein estate confirming the close ties President Donald Trump had to the late child sex trafficker, and documenting his proximity to the young women who were victimized. Committee Democrats released 19 photos revealing some of the most notable figures in Epstein’s orbit, including Trump, former President Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and former Prince Andrew. Out Rep Robert Garcia (D-CA), the ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee who’s been leading the charge for the full release of the Epstein files from Trump’s Justice Department, said in a statement that the latest production from the estate contained “over 95,000 photos, including images of the wealthy and powerful men who spent time with Jeffrey Epstein” and “thousands of photographs of women and Epstein properties,” CNN reports. “Right now, our demand is that the president release the files,” he said on the steps of the Capitol this morning. “We’ll see what he does on the 19th. But again, I think these pictures, some of these photos, are really disturbing. And I know we put some out today, there are many others, and some of the other photos that we did not put out today are incredibly disturbing.” Garcia may have been referring to those produced by the Epstein estate — but not yet shared publicly — that depict nudity. “The Estate has provided minimal redactions to these photographs,” lawyers for the estate wrote to the committee on Thursday. Garcia: "Some of the other photos that we did not put out today are incredibly disturbing"— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2025-12-12T15:32:54.604Z A spokesperson for the Republican-led committee accused Democrats of “cherry-picking photos and making targeted redactions to create a false narrative about President Trump.” “We received over 95,000 photos and Democrats released just a handful. Democrats’ hoax against President Trump has been completely debunked. Nothing in the documents we’ve received shows any wrongdoing. It is shameful Rep. Garcia and Democrats continue to put politics above justice for the survivors,” the spokesperson said. Garcia sees it differently, calling the administration’s slow-walk to releasing the complete files a “cover-up.” “It is time to end this White House cover-up and bring justice to the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and his powerful friends,” he said. “These disturbing photos raise even more questions about Epstein and his relationships with some of the most powerful men in the world. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTornado warning? Here’s your detailed day-of weather report for tonight’s UFC Freedom 250 at the White HouseWASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 13: A general view during the UFC Freedom 250 ceremonial weigh-in at The Ellipse on June 13, 2026 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Matt Ferris/Zuffa LLC) It’s Sunday, June 14th, 2026 which means tonight the big UFC Freedom 250 event will go down on the White House lawn featuring some of mixed martial arts’ (MMA’s) biggest stars. We could also be getting some cameos by unwanted guests like rain, lightning, or even a tornado! After months of forecast speculation, we finally have today’s weather report to look at … and it’s pretty iffy. Those who showed up for the UFC White House press conference on Friday at the Lincoln Memorial had to wait for thunderstorms to pass over Washington D.C. for the show to begin, pushing the presser until 9 p.m. ET. Saturday’s fan event and ceremonial weigh-ins were smoother, providing loads of sunshine during the day and clear skies for a fireworks celebration following face-offs.Now for Sunday June 14th’s weather forecast. A lot of editorializing and sensationalizing has gone into these from mainstream news sources, as a lot of people clearly want this ‘deeply corrupt’ UFC event / Trump’s birthday party to fail. Let’s look at the raw numbers directly from the National Weather Service (compiled at 10 a.m. ET) without all the catastrophizing. There’ll be a mix of sun and clouds up to 3 p.m. ET and then it’ll be overcast until 7 p.m. when the real risk of rain and thundershowers / lightning starts. Between 7 p.m. and midnight the risk of rain runs from 50% to 60%. It’s mostly expected to be light rain, except at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. where the potential rainfall amount is classified as moderate. Wind looks like a non-factor, never going above 9mph after 8 p.m. That could change if a thunderstorm rolls right over the White House. The temperature ain’t bad, dropping from a high of 92 degrees at 3 p.m. down to 81 degrees by 8 p.m. By midnight it’ll be down to 74 degrees. Humidity will sit around 40% through the day and afternoon and then start climbing at 6 p.m to 50% and ten percent more per hour: 60% at 7 p.m., 70% at 8 p.m., and 80% at 9 p.m. From there, it will slowly creep up from 80% to 90% from 9 p.m. to midnight. As for that tornado we’ve seen reports about on social media? Forecasters say it has a 1-2% chance of occurring. So don’t worry about that … worry about the lightning, which could result in delays and fans being pushed out of the Ellipse for safety reasons. From what we’ve heard, any lightning within an 8-mile radius of the event will force a 30 minute freeze, and we’re not sure even Dana White could stop that. We’ll keep you updated as meteorologists get us an update on how likely thunderstorms and lightning strikes are. And of course, we’ll also be here to share all the amazing highlights from the fights (remember the fights?!) going down in the cage tonight starting at 8 p.m. on Paramount+.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid not prepared to pay asking price for Jose Mourinho targetReal Madrid not prepared to pay asking price for Jose Mourinho targetReal Madrid have been very busy in the transfer market over the last few weeks, but their work is far from over. The signings of Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries are already wrapped up, and in the coming weeks, they hope to seal further transfers. After addressing Jose Mourinho’s defensive options with the additions of Konate and Dumfries, Real Madrid have now turned their attention to midfield. A deal to bring Bernardo Silva to the Bernabeu is close, but a more defensive-minded option is also wanted – and it could be another Portuguese that is the chosen one.Recent reports that stated that Mourinho has asked Real Madrid to sign compatriot Mateus Fernandes, with the West Ham United midfielder having impressed the new head coach. He will leave the English club this summer after their relegation from the Premier League, and Los Blancos are said to be in the race at this stage. However, they could quickly fall out of it, considering they are unprepared to pay West Ham’s £80m (€93m) asking price, as reported by El Debate (via TEAMtalk). It’s a figure that Real Madrid consider to be too expensive, and with the likes of Manchester United involved, they could quickly be left behind.€93m Fernandes signing would be a big riskImage via Richard Pelham/Getty ImagesReal Madrid have the money to spend this summer, as was shown by their bidding of €150m for Julian Alvarez, which was knocked back by Atletico Madrid. Reaching €93m for Fernandes would be very achievable, but for a player that does not have too much experience at the highest level, it would be a risk. However, a deal would align with the club’s transfer policy, so it is a question of whether Real Madrid deem Fernandes the ideal player to address their midfield concerns of the last few seasons.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Champions League winning striker's move to MLS on the cardsFormer Champions League winning striker's move to MLS on the cards originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. One of the bigger storylines in the last week has been the revelation of a possible move to the MLS for Robert Lewandowski, who has been linked with the Chicago Fire. The move comes after the Polish striker's contract with La Liga outfit Barcelona expired at the end of the season, bringing a four-season stint in Catalonia to an end, a stretch of time that saw Lewandowski record 120 goals and 22 assists. In the initial reports of Lewandowski's interest from the MLS, it was stated that he had been in direct contact with Chicago, but nothing more. It appears that more information regarding the Polish striker's demands has started to surface, with a two-year contract being one of the bigger asks from his camp, according to a recent report from Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur.🚨#ChicagoFire Robert Lewandowski’s potential move to the United States is not yet finalized.🔥 Talks are ongoing, with several clubs showing interest in the Polish striker.👀 The experienced forward is demanding a 2‑year contract. https://t.co/nINWNAAv5Jpic.twitter.com/3u8Zyxovyh— Ekrem KONUR (@Ekremkonur) June 14, 2026Per Konur, the deal between the two sides isn't complete, with the aforementioned contract length being a hurdle, as well as the vast interest in the 37-year-old's talents not being understated. The arrival of the former Champions League winner could be what takes Chicago to the next level, as they've already been making a good account of themselves in the opening stage of the MLS season, seated in third place in the Eastern Conference standings, well within the spots allocated to playoff teams.Another potential star signing for the MLSIf Lewandowski is to make the move to the Windy City, it'd be yet another star player making the move stateside, as there has been a mass influx of former European greats making the move in recent years. Most famously, Lionel Messi made the move to Inter Miami after a stint with Paris Saint-Germain, former Bundesliga star Marco Reus made the move to the LA Galaxy a few years back, which is in the same city as LAFC, who acquired the signature of Heung-Min Son.Above all the previously mentioned moves, one of the more impactful signings has been of Lewandowski's former link-up partner from Bayern Munich, Thomas Müller, who completed a move to the Vancouver Whitecaps after a 17-year stint in Bavaria, helping the Canadian side to the MLS Cup Finals in 2025, dropping the match to the aforementioned Inter Miami and Messi. The Polish striker wasn't even the first former European player to be linked to the MLS this week, as former Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin completed a move to Charlotte FC in the last few days, joining fellow ex-Premier League talent Wilifred Zaha in The Queen City. For now, it will be another storyline to watch in the months to come as the Summer transfer window rolls along.MORE TRANSFER NEWSAston Villa among six Premier League teams eyeing Barcelona wingerManchester United star striker completes move to NapoliChelsea linked to Juventus defender amid potential Cucurella exitLiverpool, Manchester United tied to relegated West Ham starChelsea reveal hefty price tag for defender amid La Liga interestManchester United, Inter Milan being linked to ex-Aston Villa starLiverpool, Bayern Munich lose race to sign German wonderkid0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Ohio State basketball guard Mathieu Grujicic transfers to RadfordAfter one year at Ohio State, Mathieu Grujicic has found a new home. The 6-foot-7, 210-pound guard has transferred to Radford, he announced on social media. An accomplished scorer on the youth international level, Grujicic struggled to acclimate to the Division I game and then was slowed by injuries during his season with the Buckeyes. He appeared in six contests at Ohio State, scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds in 33:29 of playing time. He appeared in five of the first six games of the year, then played one minute in a Dec. 23 win over Grambling State.Grujicic was raised in Germany and played for the country's youth basketball teams, where he played his way onto Ohio State's radar during the spring of 2025. He was a late signee for OSU's 2025-26 season and was unable to enroll in time to participate in summer practices with the team. That lost time proved significant as the season got underway."I’d say it’s been full of ups and downs," he said March 18, one day before Ohio State's season-ending loss to TCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. "Obviously, my health has been an issue during the season, and then also not being here this summer didn’t make the situation any easier. Overall, still a nice experience though. I’m happy I met a lot of new people, made a lot of new connections and got better."Radford went 16-16 overall last season and 9-7 in the Big South Conference.Ohio State men's basketball beat writer Adam Jardy can be reached at ajardy@dispatch.com, on Bluesky at @cdadamjardy.bsky.social or on Twitter at @AdamJardy.This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Mathieu Grujicic transfers from Ohio State to Radford after one season0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLewis Hamilton wins the Barcelona-Catalunya GPBARCELONA, SPAIN - JUNE 11: Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Scuderia Ferrari looks on during previews ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Barcelona-Catalunya at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on June 11, 2026 in Barcelona, Spain. (Photo by Mark Sutton - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty Images) | Formula 1 via Getty Images From the day he shocked the Formula 1 world, and announced his stunning move from Mercedes to Ferrari, this was the moment the Tifosi were waiting for.Lewis Hamilton’s first Grand Prix victory in red.Hamilton and Ferrari secured that win in Sunday’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, injecting the seven-time champion fully into the Drivers’ Championship fight, and giving Ferrari fans the world over the moment they were waiting for.At the outset, it looked like it was going to be his former Mercedes teammates’ day. George Russell started on pole position, one spot ahead of Hamilton, but did what he needed to do at the start. Ferrari looked to have the advantage on paper before the race, with Mercedes opting for a set of C3 medium tires, and Ferrari bolting a set of C4 soft tires onto Hamilton’s challenger. With Hamilton on softer rubber, and with the fact that under the new regulations this year, Ferrari was stronger off the line than Mercedes, you had a potential problem for Russell right when the lights went out. Both drivers got a good launch off the line, but Russell held the position through the opening lap:LIGHTS OUT IN BARCELONA!! 🎥 Watch the race start #F1#BarcelonaGPpic.twitter.com/5DvjLJWi99— Formula 1 (@F1) June 14, 2026Then the Mercedes driver put the more robust rubber to use, pulling away from Hamilton over the opening stint of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. But from there, the moments slowly began breaking in Hamilton’s favor. The next challenge for Russell and Mercedes? Navigating the opening set of pit stops. Between the heat in Barcelona, and the decision by Pirelli to opt for a softer set of tires this year, tire degradation was more of an issue on Sunday. And with Hamilton starting on a set of C4 soft tires, Ferrari called him in for his first pit stop on Lap 12, bolting on a set of C2 hard tires. How would Mercedes respond? Would they leave Russell out, or call him in to cover off Hamilton, given the power of the undercut strategy?Mercedes called Russell in, and covered off Hamilton to perfection.Hamilton came in on Lap 27, for a second stop to take a set of medium tires and lock the Ferrari driver into a three-stop strategy. That put the question to Mercedes again: Bring Russell in to cover off the stop? The fact that Hamilton was laying down a tremendous out lap seemed to force the issue. But Mercedes left Russell out to start a new lap, and Hamilton continued around the circuit, lighting up the timing sheet on a tremendous first lap on the fresh set of medium tires. Russell was told to stay out, with the team deciding to stick to their two-stop strategy. Would it work? Complicating matters even further was Lando Norris. After Hamilton’s second stop, Norris was running in third behind Russell and Antonelli. The risk Mercedes had to balance was the fact that pitting to cover off Hamilton would open the door for the McLaren driver to perhaps steal track position, and maybe even a win. If that was not enough, by Lap 31 Antonelli had caught the rear wing of Russell’s W17. The young Italian driver was less than a second behind Russell, and closing fast. At the start of Lap 33 Russell had to go defensive, to keep his teammate behind him. But the battle between the pair was music to Hamilton’s ears, as it gave him even more of an opportunity to close the gap to the two Mercedes drivers. After his pit stop the gap to the leader was 22 seconds, but by Lap 33 Hamilton had cut that gap in half. Then on Lap 35 McLaren called Norris in, and that gave Hamilton some clean air to push even more around the track. Would Mercedes call Russell in to cover off Norris? They did, calling Russell in on the following lap. That released Antonelli into the lead on the track, and Mercedes needed a quality stop in the pits. They got that, getting Russell serviced in just 2.8 seconds. Russell covered off Norris, rejoining the fight in P4 ahead of Norris in P5. Antonelli was then told by his engineer Peter Bonnington that “it won’t be long,” as they too needed to cover off Norris.Mercedes called him in on the following lap, and Hamilton inherited the lead for the moment. Antonelli came out just in front of Norris, Mercedes having covered off the defending Drivers’ Champion. Hamilton was instructed that he had seven laps to extract the most he could out of those medium tires, as he would have to come in for one more stop. The C3 medium tires would not get him to the checkered flag. With a pit stop taking about 20 seconds to complete, from pit entry to pit exit, he needed to increase the lead over Russell in second as much as he could. On Lap 40, the gap from Hamilton in P1 to Russell in P2 was 16 seconds. But that is when the intervention Hamilton needed arrived, and the door for his first Ferrari Grand Prix win swung open. Fernando Alonso came to a stop just off the track, his Aston Martin suffering a failure, and the race officials called for a Virtual Safety Car. A stop under a Virtual Safety Car averages around 12 seconds in Barcelona, and with Hamilton having more than a 15-second lead over Russell, this was his chance to make that third pit stop.Max Verstappen stopped under the VSC, and then it was the moment for Ferrari. Would they pull him in, hoping the VSC would continue?Ferrari called him in, and the seven time World Champion roared down pit lane. Ferrari got him in and out with a 2.8-second stop, and Hamilton got him back onto the track in P1 just ahead of Russell, on fresh tires, and just as the VSC ended:Here's the moment Hamilton pitted and came out ahead of Russell 👇#F1#BarcelonaGPpic.twitter.com/6IN4Q0ccVD— Formula 1 (@F1) June 14, 2026“Great job guys,” exclaimed Hamilton from the cockpit. He had the race lead by more than two seconds over his former teammate, with 24 laps to go, on fresher tires and in a very fast challenger. Race officials then noted Hamilton for a yellow flag infringement, and that led to some nervy times at Ferrari. Would he be hit with a penalty, potentially spoiling what had been a perfect afternoon for him?As Ferrari waited, Hamilton pumped in the fastest lap of the race to that point on Lap 45, building his gap over Russell to 3.7 seconds. By Lap 48, that gap was up to 6.5 seconds, potentially giving Hamilton a five-second buffer if he needed it.But he did not, as race officials announced on that lap that the potential yellow flag infringement would need no further investigation.Hamilton was closing in on his first win in red.By Lap 51, that gap was up to 8.6 seconds from Hamilton to Russell. He was making the most of the fresher tires on his challenger, “15 laps, and you are doing a good job. So you can go on,” was the instruction to Hamilton from his engineer. By Lap 55, Hamilton had the gap up to 11 seconds over Russell, and he was closing in on that first Grand Prix win with Ferrari. With ten laps to go, Hamilton’s lead was more than 12 seconds. That win was within his grasp. Hamilton’s last Grand Prix win came at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2024, but that was a promotion after Russell was disqualified following the race when his car did not meet the minimum weight. His last chance to celebrate a Grand Prix victory came at the British Grand Prix that year, an emotional afternoon as it was his final race at Silverstone with Mercedes. But this was different. A victory that almost felt like it would never come during his tough opening season with Ferrari. Yet this year, the Hamilton we have seen for so many years was back, confident to fight at the front. And on this afternoon, Ferrari got the strategy exactly right, giving Hamilton and the Tifosi a chance to celebrate together unlike they had before.“I’m happy where I am, leave me to it,” was the message from Hamilton in the closing laps. He had a gap of almost 14 seconds over Russell, and the afternoon was almost his. With five laps to go, the Mercedes duo was battling behind Hamilton, as Antonelli fought his way by Russell to take P2. That brief battle allowed Hamilton to increase his lead, now over Antonelli, to more than 17 seconds. But Antonelli was dealing with some front-wing damage, and had already been shown the black-and-white flag for exceeding track limits. A penalty was possibly in his future. But the penalty would not arrive; instead, his challenger came to a halt on Lap 62, ending his afternoon. That brought out the yellow flag, and then race officials called for a Virtual Safety Car. He was not the only driver dealing with an issue, as Charles Leclerc lost the steering at Turn 2, sliding into the gravel. Leclerc came down pit lane to have his challenger serviced.Hamilton was able to take the checkered flag under green flag conditions, for his 106th Grand Prix win.And his first in red. “Lewis Hamilton is back,” declared Jolyon Palmer in the F1TV commentary box. “In this moment, he has been brilliant,” added David Coulthard. As things stand now in the Drivers’ Championship standings, Antonelli remains in the lead with 156 points, but with his failure in the closing stages, and Hamilton’s victory, the gap from P1 to P2 is now down to just 41 points. Hamilton now has 115 points on the season.Russell remains in third with 106 points.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGame Discussion: Milwaukee Brewers (42-26) vs Philadelphia Phillies (38-32)MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 02: Kyle Harrison #52 of the Milwaukee Brewers reacts during action against the San Francisco Giants during the fifth inning at American Family Field on June 02, 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images) | Getty Images It has been an up-and-down week for the Milwaukee Brewers. It feels as though they’ve continued playing their best baseball, but it’s been a sequence of close losses. But through it all, the offense has been looking stellar, and that’s promising enough as the Crew heads into another tough slate of games ahead of them this week. This afternoon’s rubber match is one for the ages as two of the best southpaws in baseball are handed the rock. For the Brewers, it’s Kyle Harrison who is in desperate need of a bounce-back game after last Monday. Against the Athletics, he gave up eight runs on eight hits, including three home runs. It was not only an outlier performance on the season but also his career, as eight runs were the most he had given up. The reigning National League Pitcher of the Month, Cristopher Sánchez, will face the Brewers for the first time since 2024. In all of his outings against the Crew, he has allowed only one run, enough for him to have a 2.03 ERA through 13.1 innings. After not allowing a run throughout May, Sánchez has come back down to Earth a little, as he has allowed three runs in his first two starts in June. With that, he has pitched seven innings in both starts this month and has accumulated 18 strikeouts during that span with just two walks. For the Brewers, this lineup has seen Sánchez a handful of times. The lone hitters that will be seeing him for the first time will be Jake Bauers, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, Brice Turang, and Andrew Vaughn. Outside of our core hitters, Blake Perkins has hit the best against Sánchez, as he’s gone 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Christian Yelich has faced him seven times and is batting .286, while William Contreras has faced him six times and is batting .167. First pitch is slated for 1:10 p.m., and you can catch the game on Brewers.TV and WTMJ 620.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPREVIEW: Côte D’Ivoire face Ecuador in fascinating World Cup clashPREVIEW: Côte D’Ivoire face Ecuador in fascinating World Cup clashFormer African Cup of Nations winners Côte D’Ivoire take on Ecuador at the Philadelphia Stadium in a highly competitive Group E at the World Cup.Heading into their first World Cup since winning the AFCON in chaotic circumstances in 2023, Ivory Coast will be competing in just their third ever World Cup finals after qualifying on three occasions from 2006 to 2014.They seem to be in the midst of another golden generation after the heroics of Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré as dynamic wingers Yan Diomande and Amad Diallo aim to showacase their flare and dynamism on the biggest stage.Led by manager Emerse Fae, who took over following that AFCON win, Ivory Coast have become a solid unit and one of the best African sides, currently just behind the big names of Morocco and Senegal.Having the navigate the notoriously difficult CAF qualifying, Ivory Coast made lightwork of their group which contained the likes of Gabon, Kenya, Burundi, Gambia and the Seychelles. They won eight of their 10 qualifying games, drawing two and breezing past the group stages uninterrupted. They impressed in their warm up games prior to the tournament as-well, recording a historic victory over France which is the first time they have beaten their fellow Francophone country. They also beat Scotland at Evertons Hill Dickinson Stadium back in March, emphasizing their ability to compete at the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico. One of the great unknowns of this tournament, Ecuador arrive in North America as some peoples dark horses and you can see why given the talent that is littered throughout their squad.Competing in their fifth ever World Cup, Ecuador will at least be aiming to equal their best ever World Cup performance which was a round of 16 exit in 2006.Managed by Argentinian Sebastian Beccacece, Ecuador are in the midst of their own new golden generation much like their opponents this evening. With a back line of PSG’s Willian Pacho and Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie, and Chelseas Moises Caicedo anchoring the midfield, Ecuador’s spine is as strong as any side at this tournament.CONMEBOL qualification is a bit more straightforward than that of the CAF, renowned for it’s ruthlessness with six places in the finals up for grabs in a league-style format. But Ecuador’s position at the 2022 World Cup was almost jeopardized for a completely different reason, after Colombian-born winger Byron Castillo admitted in an interview that his birth documents his national team provided were fake.None of that mattered to Ecuador, though, as appeals from Chile and Peru claiming he was not eligible were dismissed by FIFA’s appeals committee and Ecuador retained their place in Qatar’s finals four years ago. This time around, Ecuador impressed by finishing second behind world champions Argentina, who they beat 1-0 in the final qualifying match courtesy of veteran striker Enner Valencia’s penalty in a game that saw a red card for both teams.Their two defeats in the 18 games was the lowest in qualifying, and they miraculously conceded just five goals during the entire campaign. Argentina and Paraguay conceded the second fewest, which was double Ecuador’s record.Ivory Coast have a series of exciting attacking talent in their ranks but they also have stability across the board which has counted heavily towards their success.Sporting Lisbons Ousmane Diomande and Evan Ndicka of Roma are the stalwarts at the back for Fae and Nottingham Forests Ibrahim Sangare will provide the cover just ahead of them in the midfield. In attack is where they really shine, Manchester United’s Amad Diallo and RB Leipzigs Yan Diomande will be the headliners for them however their strength is in depth as-well.Sunderland winger Simon Adingra has impressed on-loan at Monaco in Ligue 1 whilst Villareals Nicolas Pepe has the experience and technical ability to cause any team issues. As for Ecuador, their strengths lie less up front and more in their solidity at the back, with the likes of Pacho and Hincapie, who met in the Champions League final last month and are huge assets heading into the tournament.Caicedo has been one of Chelsea’s best players in a disappointing season, whereas Chelsea loanee Kendry Paez is being touted as the next big South American talent and will be eager to showcase his skills on the world stage. There is however still room for the 35-year-old former West Ham and Villareal forward Valencia in search of his 50th international goal in what will be his third World Cup with his country. He is not only Ecuador’s all time leading goal-scorer but the leading scorer at World Cups for Ecuador as well.Their Group E clash with the Ivory Coast kicks off at midnight (BST) in Philadelphia, with live coverage on BBC One, iPlayer, and the BBC Sport website. For more detailed reports, reaction, and analysis of the World Cup as it happens, head to our website and favourite our page on OneFootball.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, rival teams were certainly paying attention.“Hold those phone calls,” Nightengale wrote. “The Detroit Tigers went into an utter free-fall after Tarik Skubal went down with a bone chip in his elbow, losing 21 of 25 games, with teams salivating at the chance to acquire Skubal.”However, Nightengale noted that Detroit’s outlook has improved significantly in recent weeks. Since the start of June, the Tigers have begun to stabilize, posting a 7-3 record while welcoming Skubal back to the mound. The positive developments do not stop there. Nightengale also pointed out that starting pitchers Casey Mize and Justin Verlander are both nearing returns, giving Detroit hope that its rotation could soon resemble the group it envisioned entering the season.Because of that, the Tigers are reportedly not ready to make any decisions regarding Skubal’s future.“The Tigers plan to wait until around the All-Star break to see if they can get back in the race before pulling the plug on their season and trading Skubal,” Nightengale reported. At 29 years old and under team control beyond this season, Skubal would undoubtedly command one of the largest trade packages in recent memory if Detroit ever made him available. For now, though, the Tigers appear focused on seeing whether a healthier roster and a strong stretch of baseball can pull them back into contention before making any franchise-altering decisions.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM"You helped me achieve this dream" Lewis Hamilton's emotional message on first Ferrari GP winMotorsport photoLewis Hamilton thanked Ferrari for helping him "achieve a dream" after taking his maiden grand prix win as a member of the Scuderia.Hamilton and Ferrari went on the offensive in F1's tyre battle on a sweltering Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Unlike most other frontrunners, including poleman George Russell, Hamilton opted for a start of softs, with the excessive tyre degradation all but nailing him to a three-stop strategy. Read Also: F1 Barcelona GP: Lewis Hamilton takes maiden Ferrari win as Kimi Antonelli retires late That allowed the seven-time world champion to fully flex his upgraded SF-26's muscles, putting pressure on Russell and the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli as they were nursing their hard tyres, with Russell in particular struggling for pace with a lack of front load.Hamilton received an additional bit of assistance from old nemesis Fernando Alonso as the Spaniard parked his Aston Martin on lap 40, allowing the Briton to take his first and final stop under virtual safety car conditions. But the Ferrari's blistering pace in the final stint suggested either Mercedes would have struggled to contain the 41-year-old on his quest for a first Ferrari grand prix win in 31 attempts. On the outlap, an emotional Hamilton thank his team for helping him "achieve this dream" of winning in red."Grazie a tutti Maranello, thank you so much!, Hamilton said. "You helped me achieve this dream and I can't thank you enough. Thank you to everyone for pushing so hard back at home. "They're all special in their own way but this one is something else," he said in parc ferme. APNEWS.COMPalestinian death toll in Gaza tops 73,000, officials say, as Israel strikes despite ceasefirePalestinians clear the rubble of a building that was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike, at al-Maghazi refugee camp, central Gaza Strip, Friday, June 12, 2026. (AP Photo/Abdel Kareem Hana)2026-06-14T13:23:40Z DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Palestinian death toll from the Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 73,000, Gaza’s Health Ministry said Sunday, despite a fragile ceasefire that has been described as stalled.Israel has continued to strike inside the territory despite the deal reached in October, saying it carries out strikes against Hamas and other militants who pose a threat, and in response to ceasefire violations, including occasional attacks. Five Israeli soldiers have been killed since the truce.Confirmation of the latest Palestinian toll came from Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the ministry’s records department, and Hamza Salem from the ministry’s public relations department. The number of deaths since the beginning of the war is now 73,001. On Sunday, the ministry said, there were five deaths: two in the southern city of Khan Younis and one in central Gaza, in addition to two who died of earlier wounds. Over 173,200 people have been wounded since the start of the war, which was ignited by the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attack into Israel. That attack killed some 1,200 people and took 251 others hostage. The health ministry, part of the Hamas-led government, is staffed by medical professionals and maintains detailed records viewed as generally reliable by United Nations agencies and independent experts. It does not distinguish between civilians and militants but says women and children make up around half of all fatalities. Read More Israel says it tries to avoid harming civilians and blames their deaths on Hamas because the militants operate in densely populated areas. The U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal reached in October ended full-scale military operations and led to the return of all the remaining hostages. But other elements of the deal have stalled as Hamas has refused to disarm and Israeli troops have advanced in Gaza, rather than withdrawn. Both sides accuse the other of violating the agreement but say it is still in effect. Progress on all other issues — including reconstruction, Israeli troop withdrawals and the establishment of a new Palestinian government — is being held up by the deadlock over disarming Hamas, the top diplomat overseeing the U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov, has said. The war displaced most of the Palestinian population of over 2 million, left large parts of the territory in rubble and created widespread shortages of food, medicine and other basic supplies as the border crossings with Gaza — all but one controlled by Israel — slammed shut.___Magdy reported from Cairo. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy can't World Cup games kick off on time?Fifa's expanded pre-match ceremonies might be partially behind the delays [Getty Images]Scotland fans who had gone 28 years without seeing their team play at a World Cup probably didn't begrudge a further two-and-a-half-minute delay before their game against Haiti got under way. And after celebrating a 1-0 win - their first World Cup victory since Italia '90 - the Tartan Army can reflect that good things do indeed come to those who wait. But the delay to the Group C tie in Massachusetts continued a noticeable trend of tardiness at the 2026 tournament, with none of the first eight matches beginning on time.In fact, those fixtures have started an average of three minutes after the scheduled kick-off time.Thursday's opening game between Mexico and South Africa was the biggest culprit, getting under way six minutes late, while Saturday's match between Qatar and Switzerland was almost five minutes behind. The only games to begin within a minute of the official start time were Australia against Turkey (40 seconds) and South Korea versus the Czech Republic (51 seconds). What is behind late starts? While a minute or two may not matter too much in the grand scheme of things, it will be identified as an area for improvement by Fifa, who meticulously plan every detail of the build-up to games. Each match has its own dedicated running order, which is made available to the media, listing the exact timings of when - among other things - teams and match officials must assemble in the tunnel, when they enter the pitch and when national anthems are sung. The information helps broadcasters, particularly those who play commercials, to ensure they don't miss key pre-game moments. For example, Haiti and Scotland were due to take to the field precisely eight minutes and 40 seconds before kick-off. But at that point the Haitian players were not quite ready, with the match feed instead showing them being hurried along by a Fifa official.By the time both sides eventually left the tunnel, they were already 90 seconds behind. The other fixtures that have been significantly delayed also featured players entering the pitch late. While the games involving co-hosts Mexico, Canada and the USA were all preceded by opening ceremonies, those had all concluded well before kick-off and shouldn't have caused problems. But one factor that may have contributed to the issue is Fifa's decision to ramp up the pageantry immediately before matches start. The entire squad, rather than just the starting line-up, now gathers in the centre circle for the anthems, with enormous flags displayed in each half.World football's governing body believes the ceremony provides a "moment of unity, pride and emotion", but it is also more complex to stage. As teams, officials and organisers grow more familiar with the routine, the process may become slicker - though it may also be that Fifa has slightly underestimated how long it takes.Play BBC Sport's new World Cup predictor gameWorld Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHamilton wins first grand prix for FerrariLewis Hamilton has become the seventh oldest driver to win a F1 grand prix [Getty Images]Lewis Hamilton took his first victory for Ferrari in a compelling Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix as championship leader Kimi Antonelli retired from second place with four laps to go.It was a dramatic end to a gripping race that had tension and jeopardy throughout as Hamilton secured his first victory since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, when he was still driving for Mercedes. The win turned on a virtual safety-car (VSC) period which allowed Hamilton, on a different pit-stop strategy to Mercedes, to pit and retain the lead.Meanwhile, Antonelli had just passed Russell for second place with five laps to go after a race-long battle when his car ground to a halt because of an electrical shutdown.Russell finished second and McLaren's Lando Norris was third in the first all-British podium since the 1968 US Grand Prix.An emotional Hamilton said over the radio: "Grazie a tutti. You've helped me achieve this dream. I am so proud of you. To my family, I love you, and to the fans, thank you for continuing to remind me who I am."The key stories of a momentous race were:Confirmation of Hamilton and Ferrari's return to the frontAntonelli's first problem of the year providing much-needed luck for RussellA touch of irony as to the cause of the VSC that turned the race for HamiltonWithout the VSC, Hamilton's three-stop strategy, compared with the two of Russell and Antonelli, would have had him catching the two Mercedes and contesting for the victory in the closing laps.Instead, the VSC allowed him to save 10 seconds on a stop, and come out still in the lead, and then pull away on fresher tyres.Hamilton's victory, in combination with Antonelli's retirement, narrowed the seven-time champion's deficit in the championship to 41 points.Russell also closes in on Antonelli and is now 50 points behind the Italian.Alonso's retirement delivers win to HamiltonThe previous all-British podium was at the 1968 US Grand Prix when Jackie Stewart won from Graham Hill and John Surtees [Getty Images]For a long time, the race seemed to be heading the way of one of the Mercedes drivers, as Russell converted his pole position into a lead from Hamilton and Antonelli at the start and the two raced in that order for almost the first half of the race. The divergent strategies of the three cars became apparent as soon as Hamilton pitted on lap 11 to change his soft tyres.Russell and Antonelli had started on the medium compound, but Mercedes chose to bring them in after Hamilton to protect track position, even though the team's radio communications made it obvious they knew they were on a different strategy. When Hamilton pitted for a second time on lap 27, Antonelli began to pressure Russell for the lead, closing right up on his team-mate and trying a couple of times to pass into Turn One.But the two drivers were warned not to waste too much time fighting, in the context of their battle with Hamilton.Russell stopped for a final time on lap 36, Antonelli a lap later, handing the lead to Hamilton, who still had one stop to make.Hamilton's job initially looked like it was to lose as little time as possible to the advancing Mercedes on their fresher tyres, before pitting, dropping to third, and trying to catch them again. But Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin broke down at Turn Nine on lap 40, and that led to a VSC being deployed to recover the car safely.Under a VSC, cars have to slow down and maintain their gaps, but as they are travelling slower, it means a pit stop costs relatively less time than under racing conditions.Hamilton had a 14-second lead, and that was enough margin to stop under the VSC and come out still in front. It put him in a strong position, out front and with tyres that were eight laps fresher. Only a problem now could cost him a victory and the car ran like clockwork to the end for Hamilton's 106th grand prix victory and Ferrari's first since Mexico 2024.There were two small ironies. Hamilton's win was Ferrari's first in Spain since 2013, when the man who delivered it was Alonso, whose retirement caused the VSC that delivered this next one to his old arch-rival.And the post-race interviews were conducted by Nico Rosberg, Hamilton's former Mercedes team-mate, with whom he had also had an acrimonious relationship when they were in the same team - and 10 years since the pair crashed together on the first lap of this race when competing for the title.Andrew Benson Q&A: Send us your questionsLuck turns at MercedesAt Mercedes, it was a tale of mixed fortunes.Russell would probably have won the race had it not been for the VSC but until Antonelli's retirement it looked as if he would once again have to accept second best to his young team-mate, who has had such a sensational turnaround of form this year.Russell needed a good weekend after a difficult run of form and results, and on a competitive level he has had one.And for a long time, it looked like he would secure his second win of the year, only for the VSC to turn the race on its head.He weathered the first wave of pressure from Antonelli mid-race and looked on course for victory. But once the VSC vaulted Hamilton to the front, Russell remained under pressure from Antonelli and the 19-year-old passed him into Turn One with five laps to go.No sooner had Antonelli moved into second place, luck turned against him, and the car ground to a halt between Turns Five and Six.His retirement moved McLaren's Lando Norris into the final podium position. The world champion had been close behind Antonelli for much of the race but not quite close enough to challenge.Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fourth, from McLaren's Oscar Piastri and the second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRaducanu loses Queen's final as trophy wait continuesRaducanu was playing in the third tour-level final of her career, having won the 2021 US Open final but lost in Cluj earlier this year [Getty Images]Emma Raducanu paid the price for a slow start as she was beaten in the Queen's final by Croatia's Donna Vekic.Raducanu, 23, was beaten 6-0 7-6 (8-6) by Vekic - a Wimbledon semi-finalist two years ago - and has still not won a title since the 2021 US Open.Raducanu valiantly fought off three championship points at 6-5 in the second set - and saved a fourth on Vekic's serve in the tie-break - but could not deny her opponent on the fifth as she sprayed a forehand wide. Vekic, 29, was a lucky loser - meaning she was beaten in qualifying and put into the draw when French Open semi-finalist Marta Kostyuk pulled out injured - and has taken full advantage of her fortune to lift the trophy.Raducanu, ranked 42nd in the world, seemed hampered by a leg issue as Vekic cruised to the first set in less than half an hour. The British number one rallied superbly to move a double break ahead in the second set, but twice failed to serve out victory - and could not convert two set points at 5-4.Vekic, who is ranked 76th but is adept on the grass, is an experienced campaigner and held her nerve to level. Both players looked to be tiring in a physical encounter, but Raducanu - backed by a vociferous home crowd - dug deep to force a tie-break.Despite the defeat, Raducanu will take a lot of pride from an encouraging week on the British grass as she builds up towards Wimbledon. The ranking points she has earned will push her up to the brink of the world's top 30, which could be enough to ensure she is seeded at the All England Club."What a week - it's been an incredible week for me to reach the final," Raducanu said."Donna played superbly from start to finish."Watch Queen's final: Raducanu loses Queen's final to Vekic after epic second set - reactionRaducanu has enjoyed a productive week at Queen's, which is hosting the WTA event for the second year since returning after a 52-year hiatus. The question mark coming into Sunday's final was in relation to her fitness.Raducanu played two singles matches on Saturday because of rain disruption earlier in the week and slipped on the baseline during her quarter-final win over Kamilla Rakhimova. She wore strapping on her left thigh during the second match - her semi-final win over American teenager Iva Jovic. The taping was evident again when she walked out on to Andy Murray Arena to face Vekic and it immediately looked like her mobility was hampered. As well as being unable to move as freely along the baseline, Raducanu was not getting as low in her groundstrokes as she had over the previous days.Raducanu found herself 5-0 down after little over 20 minutes as Vekic produced an almost flawless returning game.Raducanu asked for more treatment from the physio at that changeover, but then Vekic broke again to wrap up the opening set in less than half an hour.At the start of the second set, Raducanu implored her team for more vocal encouragement - and the home crowd further increased their level of support.Raducanu suddenly had more spring in her step and took her third break opportunity in the third game.Raducanu was now able to elongate the rallies - which always felt like it would be the key to her success - as Vekic's level dropped.Another break for 5-2 provided further hope to the home crowd. Everyone could feel it was a different match.Vekic particularly looked like she would not have relished a third set, but Raducanu was unable to ensure a gripping second set went the distance.Live scores, results and order of playGet tennis news sent straight to your phone0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 10 Visualizações 0 Anterior

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMIt’s Flag Day… so why don’t we celebrate our flags?June 14 is Flag Day. That’s right, smack in the middle of Pride Month – which celebrates a community that absolutely adores flags – there is a day celebrating a flag. I’m not the first person to notice this. A sketch in season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which aired in 2021, noticed it too. The challenge had queens perform in parodies of Hallmark Christmas films that were based on less-popular holidays, and one group got Flag Day. It’s not an official federal holiday, so no government offices close for it. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGeorge Russell Issues Stark Ferrari Warning After Hamilton’s Insane Race PaceThe celebratory champagne had barely settled on the podium at the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix before the reality of a shifting Formula 1 hierarchy began to sink in at Mercedes-AMG. While Lewis Hamilton’shistoric maiden victory for Scuderia Ferrari captured the global headlines, his former teammate was busy evaluating the structural threat now looming out of Maranello.Speaking to Sky Sports F1 immediately after finishing second in Barcelona, George Russell delivered a sobering assessment of the field, warning that Ferrari’s technical resurgence is officially a clear and present danger to Mercedes’ championship aspirations“The Pace Today Was Insane”Russell, who shared the Mercedes garage with Hamilton for three seasons, was quick to offer professional praise to the seven-time World Champion. However, the pleasantries quickly gave way to genuine concern regarding the sheer mechanical step forward Ferrari demonstrated over the 66-lap distance. When pressed on whether he was growing worried about the mounting technical challenge and raw pace being extracted by the Italian squad, Russell didn’t mince his words.May 23, 2026; Montreal, Quebec, CANADA; Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton (44) during Lenovo Grand Prix Du Canada qualifying at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Mandatory Credit: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images“Yeah, I mean, yesterday was a real surprise for us in the team, and then the pace today was insane from Lewis,” Russell admitted candidly. “So, um, yeah… they’re coming, I think.”The admission highlights a dramatic turnaround. While Mercedes appeared to hold a comfortable buffer over the rest of the field during the early European leg of the season, Ferrari’s recent aerodynamic and optimization upgrades have effectively erased that deficit under race conditions.A Disconnect Between Saturday and Sunday? What makes Russell’s warning so critical for the engineering base at Brackley is how quickly the W17’s competitive edge faded when moving from single-lap execution to long-run tire management.Russell enjoyed a stellar opening to the weekend, looking entirely dialled into the slippery Barcelona asphalt during practice and securing a front-row start. But once the heavy fuel loads and soaring track temperatures of Sunday took over, the car balance drifted away from him.May 24, 2026; Montreal, Quebec, CANADA; Mercedes driver George Russell (63) during the Lenovo Grand Prix Du Canada at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Mandatory Credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images“Friday and Saturday was a really strong and solid day for me,” Russell explained, reflecting on his early weekend confidence. “Today was a little bit more challenging. Everything started off quite well, I felt good in the first stint, and then the last two stints were a bit more difficult. But as I said, it’s good to be back here.”While Russell managed to bring the car home in second place to salvage a clean race and a heavy haul of points, the execution felt defensive rather than offensive. Mercedes was simply powerless to stop Hamilton’s alternate strategy and relentless pace from controlling the final stints.A Wake-Up Call for MercedesFor the past few seasons, Mercedes-AMG F1 has operated under the assumption that its primary intra-team rivalries would dictate the layout of the championship trophies. Russell himself noted that “Ferrari was mighty impressive today, and yeah, we need to keep on pushing.”With Hamilton finally unlocking the baseline sweet spot of his Ferrari chassis, the title fight is no longer an isolated internal affair for the Silver Arrows. If Russell wants to maintain his position at the top of the standings, Mercedes will have to fast-track their next aerodynamic upgrade package before the paddock arrives in Austria. Otherwise, the “insane” pace Russell witnessed in Barcelona might become a permanent fixture at the front of the grid.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 9 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMGuardians risk losing George Valera to new MLB teamGuardians risk losing George Valera to new MLB team originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.George Valera was a promising prospect in the Cleveland system for a long time.He made it to the majors with the Guardians last season, and he had one massive moment in the playoffs, too. Now, though, the Guardians are risking a loss of Valera from their organization entirely. As part of a sequence of roster moves on Sunday, the Guardians designated Valera for assignment.Guardians moves (so far):-- Gabriel Arias activated from 60-day injured list.-- Jose Ramirez placed on 10-day IL with hamate fracture.-- George Valera designated for assignment.— Tom Withers (@twithersCLE) June 14, 2026MORE: Guardians' Jose Ramirez situation is one that could change everythingThe DFA removes Valera from the 40-man roster, but to do that, he has to pass through waivers. While on waivers, the 25-year old outfielder could be claimed by any other team in MLB, which would move his contract to a brand new organization.Valera has just two MLB homers and a career .218 average in 78 at bats across the past two seasons. This season at Triple-A Columbus, he has put up a .784 OPS. The lefty-swinging Valera has impressive raw power, but the Guardians continue to try and figure out who can stick in their outfield at the major league level.Apparently, they have at least some doubt about Valera and are willing to risk losing him on waivers.More MLB news:Bo Bichette reveals his plans for his opt-out clauseA 'gentlemanly' baserunning move confused the umpires, and everyone elseOneil Cruz is Pirates' big trade deadline questionOutfielder retires from baseball to go play college footballDodgers have a very simple reason to trade for Tarik Skubal0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 9 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNovak Djokovic denied Barcelona GP entry before waving flag for Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari winPhoto by Mark Sutton - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty ImagesNovak Djokovic’s day at the Barcelona Grand Prix began with an awkward moment outside the gates but ended with him waving the chequered flag for Lewis Hamilton’s first win as a Ferrari driver.Even by Formula 1 standards, it was a unique journey through the paddock.Djokovic went from a pass issue to a role in one of Hamilton’s most significant victories in recent years.Novak Djokovic’s Barcelona GP pass drama came firstDjokovic arrived early on race day but was reportedly held up outside after forgetting his entry pass. According to F1 photographer Kym Illman, a member of Djokovic’s entourage ended up lending him their credential while they went back to retrieve his pass.“Novak Djokovic arrived early for race day this morning. However, the tennis great had forgotten his pass, leaving him temporarily stranded outside the gates. In the end, one member of his entourage lent Novak their credential to gain entry, before making the trip back to the car to collect his pass to use themselves.”It was a harmless moment, but also a reminder of how strict F1’s security can be, even for a 24-time Grand Slam champion.Djokovic’s day quickly turned around. By the end of the race, he was waving the chequered flag as Hamilton crossed the line for Ferrari, marking a new chapter in both of their careers.Lewis Hamilton’s seventh Barcelona win boosts title threatHamilton’s win was more than a headline moment. It was his seventh victory at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, breaking the tie with Michael Schumacher for the most wins at the track.Photo by Mark Sutton – Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty ImagesIt was also his first Grand Prix win in Ferrari colors. The team’s three-stop strategy paid off, helping Hamilton overhaul early leader George Russell and pull away in the closing stages. From a championship perspective, it was significant. Hamilton moved closer to Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who had been leading the drivers’ standings. The win added weight to Ferrari’s growing title challenge, especially as Mercedes continued to show signs of inconsistency.Antonelli suffered a late retirement, Russell lost ground after a strong start, and Hamilton kept adding points, quietly building momentum. That is why this race might be remembered for more than Djokovic’s missing pass. It was the day Hamilton won his first race for Ferrari, and the day their title hopes started to feel real again.Read more:Lewis Hamilton has one simple request for England fans before 2026 World Cup campaign beginsNew detail on Oscar Piastri’s McLaren exit clause emerges amid Red Bull interestDavid Coulthard pushes back on ‘sensitive’ Lewis Hamilton complaints about media criticism0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 9 Visualizações 0 Anterior

I’ve spent many years abroad. I remember the first time I joined the national team people were asking who I was, so for me it’s natural.“I am doing my job at my club to improve and be able to represent my country, which is the most important thing for me at the moment. To be here, to try and help the team as much as possible, and try and add a second star to our shirt. So I’ll leave the debate to all you guys (media).”Read – World Cup Day 3: Brazil unconvincing, Scotland end wait, Swiss snoozefestSee more – Ronaldo’s redemption at the 2002 World CupFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 9 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPotts takes eight wickets as Durham beat DerbyshireRothesay County Championship, Division Two, Banks Homes Riverside (day three)Durham 377: Raine 63, Clark 51, Bedingham 49; Aitchison 5-74Derbyshire 118& 237 (f/o): Came 105*, N Potts 42; M Potts 8-66 Durham (21pts) beat Derbyshire (2pts) by an innings and 22 runsMatch scorecardMatthew Potts fired Durham to their fourth victory of the season to extend their commanding lead at the top of the Division Two table and leave Derbyshire opener Harry Came high and dry after carrying his bat.Resuming on 99-4 and still needing 160 to make Durham bat again, Came batted throughout the morning session despite the efforts of the home attack. But Callum Parkinson broke the fifth-wicket stand just before the second new ball was due, and Potts did the rest with a spectacular burst of four wickets in 19 balls to complete figures of 8-66, the best in Division Two this season – although not his career best, falling just short of the 9-68 he took against Lancashire in 2024.Potts had match figures of 10-93, while Came was left unbeaten on 105 from 290 balls – the first Derbyshire opener to carry his bat since Billy Godleman at Lord's in 2018.Parkinson and Will Rhodes maintained Durham's control in the last 10 overs with the old ball either side of lunch, culminating in a superb delivery from Parkinson which removed Nick Potts' off-stump after a restrained innings of 42 from 108 balls, and a partnership of 84 in 38 overs with Came.Came reached his fourth first-class century 10 overs later with his 13th boundary and Derbyshire had reduced the deficit to 42 when Martin Andersson drove Potts uppishly to extra cover, and Ben McKinney used all of his height to take his third sharp catch of the match. That got rid of Came's last significant partner, Potts removing Brooke Guest's off stump two balls later with a ball that jagged back off the pitch, and then polishing off Shoaib Bashir and Mohammed Abbas in the space of three balls three overs later – after Kasey Aldridge had Ben Aitchison chipping to mid-off for his sixth wicket of the match.Report by ECB Reporters' Network, supported by Rothesay.Notifications, social media and more with BBC Sport0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 9 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTST Best Bets: June 14, 2026Jun 11, 2026; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Hurricanes right wing Seth Jarvis (24) dives for a loose puck against Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore (27) and right wing Pavel Dorofeyev (16) during the third period in game five of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final at Lenovo Center. After an electric first three games of the Stanley Cup Final that featured two overtime finishes, the Carolina Hurricanes have won comfortably in Games 4 and 5 and now have a chance to end the series on the road tonight. The switch to backup goalie Brandon Bussi late in Game 3 was where it all changed for Carolina, as Bussi has stabilized the Hurricanes defense with a .908 SV% through his three appearances.Vegas once held control of this series with a 2-1 lead, but can they defend home ice to force a Game 7?For all of your Stanley Cup Finals betting picks, here are tonight’s TST Best Bets brought to you by BetOnline.ag. Click here to join. All new players get a 50% welcome bonus and up to $250 in free bets. First Pick: Carolina Hurricanes ML (-115) over Vegas Golden KnightsRundown: We’re backing the Hurricanes as slight road favorites here, as Carolina’s growing momentum has started to feel like a storm Vegas can no longer contain. The Golden Knights got a tough break in the second period of Game 5 when forward William Karlsson suffered an injury that he did not return from. Karlsson has since been ruled out for Game 6, further adding to the sizable gap in depth between these two teams. Carolina’s offense has been firing on all cylinders, with center Jordan Staal leading the charge after becoming the first player since 1958 to score in each of the first five games of a Stanley Cup Final. The Hurricanes’ offensive attack has been an insurmountable challenge for Vegas goalie Carter Hart, who is now the first goalie in NHL history to allow four or more goals in each of his first five Stanley Cup games. Expect another tough night for Hart in the cage in Game 6, as the Hurricanes hoist the Stanley Cup for just the second time in franchise history. Second Pick: Vegas Golden Knights vs. Carolina Hurricanes – Over 6 goalsJun 11, 2026; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Brandon Bussi (32) freezes the puck against Vegas Golden Knights center Tomas Hertl (48) during the third period in game five of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final at Lenovo Center. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn ImagesJun 11, 2026; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Brandon Bussi (32) freezes the puck against Vegas Golden Knights center Tomas Hertl (48) during the third period in game five of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final at Lenovo Center.Rundown: We have yet to see the under hit through five games of these Stanley Cup Finals, and despite the increased intensity of a do-or-die Game 6, we’re rolling with the over once again here. Hart’s streak of goals allowed in this series makes it hard to envision the under hitting unless we see a much-improved performance from the seventh-year man, and Carolina’s offense has shown no signs of slowing down. With two of five games in this series needing overtime, the over does not necessarily need to cash in regulation, as another extra-period finish could provide the final push needed to get this total across the line.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 9 Visualizações 0 Anterior

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘It’s euphoria’: New York City celebrates Knicks’ NBA title win after 53-year waitMarvita Davis, 70, was a teenager in Harlem the last time the New York Knicks won a championship, in 1973.“I was like, Oh, I like this game. I can get into this game,” recalled Davis, who went on to play basketball at Northeastern University. She maintained her love of hoops – even though she had knee and hip replacements and can no longer play – and her love of the Knicks, despite their more than a half-century of futility. “I will support all my hometown teams, regardless of how bad they are,” said Davis, a retired computer programmer.Related: Ecstasy and chaos grip New York City after Knicks win long-sought NBA title – in picturesOn Saturday night, that longstanding fanhood paid off when the Knicks finally won an NBA title again by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games.Davis watched as the game was projected onto a screen on the front lawn of her apartment building with other residents in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn. Others watched from bars in the East Village and fire escapes in the West Village and erupted as the clock hit zero.“It’s euphoria,” Davis said. That was the feeling throughout all five boroughs. Car horns, fireworks, “Let’s go Knicks” chants and Jay-Z’s Empire State Of Mind and Frank Sinatra’s Theme From New York, New York filled the streets, subways and bars until well after midnight. (Some shouted an expletive directed at Spurs star Victor Wembanyama too.)“The city is alive, man, like never before,” said Nick Pineda, a 47-year Bronx resident who works in information technology and watched the game at Habana Outpost, a Brooklyn restaurant that also projected the game outdoors.Firefighters drove through the city holding a Knicks blanket. Even bus drivers got some love from residents.“B-52! B-52! B-52!” fans who filled sidewalks in Brooklyn chanted as a bus rolled past.Predictably, as after many championships – even ones less than a half-century in the making – some fans turned the occasion into an opportunity to riot, destroy property and commit violence.Tens of thousands of people gathered outside the Knicks’ home, Madison Square Garden, according to a New York police department estimate.Whereas many in the city were chanting “Go Knicks,” police in riot gear tried to clear the area outside Madison Square Garden, yelling, “Move Back. Move back. Move back.”There was a shooting and four slashings or stabbings amid fights in the city, the police reported. Five school buses were destroyed – including by lighting them on fire. The vehicles were slated to transport fans from the city to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for World Cup games, a police spokesperson stated. People also badly damaged five police cars, including by smashing them with baseball bats.Police arrested 63 people connected to the game. Ten police officers suffered injuries, including ones who were punched in the face and struck with a glass bottle. But the mayhem was no match for the fervor. Brooklyn native Rashid Taylor, 51, said Jalen Brunson was the driver that guided them to the victory.“They got the champion, fearless leader just taking them through all the fire,” Taylor said of Brunson, who scored 45 points in the Game 5 win. “This team is just heart and soul and passion and not backing down.”And it was not only lifelong Knicks fans who were thrilled to see them win. Jeremy Friedman grew up in St Louis and a decade ago moved to Chicago, where Brunson played in high school and has plenty of fans, including Friedman’s friends. Friedman became one too.Friedman, a headhunter, wore former Knicks star Jeremy Lin’s jersey and celebrated with friends on a sidewalk in Brooklyn.“The Knicks – 53 years!” Friedman said. “It’s an amazing time to be part of this city.”There is only more celebration ahead. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a ticker tape parade on 18 June, and said city hall will present the team the keys to the city – a symbolic gesture to recognize New York’s notable citizens.“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Through near misses, heartbreak and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks. And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart – just like the five boroughs itself.”0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 9 Visualizações 0 Anterior

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Cleveland Browns are a long way away from figuring out who their starting QB will be for the 2026 NFL season. The latest development for Shedeur Sanders, in the quarterback competition for Deshaun Watson, is a positive one, at least.ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi broke down the battle in a new article on Sunday."Both Watson and Sanders had their moments during OTAs and minicamp," Oyefusi writes. "Monken, though, acknowledged it's important to evaluate Watson and Sanders in practices with pads on, a more lively pass rush and possibly even preseason games before he decides on who will start."MORE: Jahmyr Gibbs, Bijan Robinson playing a funny game of chickenSanders got some starting experience as a rookie, but it wasn't all positive. He'll need to show continued improvement, especially under a new coaching staff. In reality, he'll probably get some starts this season, and Watson will probably get some starts this season, too."It would feel different if I didn't feel like their progression hadn't gotten to this point where I think they both can start and play winning football," Monken said, via ESPN. "I'm convinced of it. And I'd say it if I didn't. I mean, I can't decide now because I think both have earned the opportunity to continue to compete once we put the pads on."There's still much to figure out, and there's a strong chance neither of these guys is the long-term answer.
