NHL playoff overtime explained: Longest games, rules, 2026 OT results
The Stanley Cup Final is nearing the end and just like last year, there has been some overtime. With the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights evenly matched, we had the first overtime in this year's Final in Game 2. It was followed by double overtime in Game. 3.The Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers went to overtime three times in the first four games. The Oilers won Games 1 and 4 while the Panthers won Game 2 in double overtime. Games 5 and 6 were settled in regulation as the Panthers beat the Oilers for the second year in a row.Unlike the Olympics and world championships, where 3-on-3 overtime is played even in the gold medal game, the NHL switches things up in the postseason when the games matter more. There won't be any more 3-on-3 play. It is 5-on-5 instead, just like in regulation play. There won't be any more shootouts. There is sudden death, and it could last a very long time. This postseason, there have been 22 overtime games, including four double-overtime games. Here's what to know about playoff hockey overtime, including the format, longest games and 2026 results. How does OT work in NHL playoffs? If the score is tied after three periods, the teams go to the dressing rooms for 15 minutes while the ice is resurfaced. Overtime periods last 20 minutes or until someone scores. It's 5-on-5 play (barring penalties). If no one scores in the first overtime, the process repeats and continues until someone scores. The teams change sides for each overtime period. The first overtime is the long change to get back to the bench. The NHL Situation Room reviews all goals to make sure they are legally scored, such as the goal that ended Game 4 of the Anaheim-Edmonton series or the overturned goal in Game 4 of the Vegas-Utah series.2026 NHL playoff overtime resultsJune 6: Golden Knights 5, Hurricanes 4 (2OT): Shea Theodore scored the winner at 5:38 of the second overtime as Vegas took a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final.A crazy goal to end a crazy Game 3 in double overtimeShea Theodore launches a slapshot that smacks the endboards, bounces back, and goes off of Brandon Bussi's skate--IN MID-AIR, MIND YOU--and into the net#SoundTheSiren#ForgedInFire#NHL#StanleyCuppic.twitter.com/owiUGMzBBJ— Queen of the Puck (@rbarkleyhockey) June 7, 2026June 4:Hurricanes 4, Golden Knights 3: Seth Jarvis scored the winner at 3:56 of the first overtime as Carolina tied the Stanley Cup Final 1-1.May 25: Hurricanes 3, Canadiens 2: Andrei Svechnikov scored the winner at 14:06 of the first overtime as Carolina took the series lead in Game 3.May 23: Hurricanes 3, Canadiens 2. Curacao have nothing to be ashamed about, says Advocaat
Curacao can hold their heads up high said head coach Dick Advocaat despite a 7-1 hammering by four-time World Cup winners Germany (Paul ELLIS)Curacao's World Cup debut may have ended in a reality check of a 7-1 hammering by four-time champions Germany on Sunday but it "is nothing to be ashamed of" said their head coach Dick Advocaat. The 78-year-old, the oldest coach to appear at a World Cup finals, had been out of his seat when a deflected strike from Livano Comenencia levelled the match at 1-1.However, Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz with a double, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav scored to put to bed any possibility of one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history."It is not embarrassing to lose like that against such a team," said Advocaat at the post match press conference in Houston."This team (Germany) is worth 850 million and Curacao, 25."Curacao, the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for the tournament, had hoped to pull off a giant-killing exploit "but it was not to be" said Advocaat."They were simply too strong and we gave away too many easy goals," lamented Advocaat, who was also present at the previous World Cup hosted in the US, 32 years ago, when he was in charge of the Dutch. Advocaat, who returned to take charge of Curacao after stepping aside in February when his daughter fell ill, said his and his staff's task was to restore morale ahead of next Saturday's Group E game against Ecuador."Obviously 7-1 is a heavy defeat," he said."We must make sure no one's head drops, that they do not remain in a bad state of mind."But I am not too worried about that happening."Advocaat, who wiped away tears before the kick-off, said the heavy defeat was made up for by the "fantastic scenes of happiness in the stands" from the fans fondly known as the 'Blue Wave'. "It is already formidable what we achieved in qualifying for the finals," he said."And we should be conscious of that."All we need to do is simply show the best of ourselves here."Advocaat added even if Curacao does not cause an upset in the remaining group games -- Ivory Coast await in the final match -- "we will still be happy to have competed at the biggest event in the world."jta/bm/pi/rcw

Troy ramps up its offense to rally for 12-8 win that knocks Mississippi out of College World Series
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jabe Boroff hit the tiebreaking double in a four-run seventh inning and Troy and its potent offense kept the program's first College World Series appearance going with a 12-8 win over Mississippi in an elimination game Sunday. The Trojans (39-31) erased a four-run deficit to post their 18th come-from-behind win of the season and advance to a game Tuesday against the loser of the West Virginia-North Carolina game Sunday night.Mississippi (41-23) went two-games-and-out in its first trip to Charles Schwab Field since winning the national championship in 2022. Southeastern Conference teams had won 16 straight against non-SEC opponents in the CWS before the Rebels lost to North Carolina and Troy.Troy, which lost 7-5 to West Virginia on Friday, ramped up an offense that arrived in Omaha averaging 10.6 runs per game in the NCAA Tournament. The conditions were perfect for the 3-hour, 54-minute offensive free-for-all — sunny, 70 degrees at first pitch and a 15-mph wind blowing out. The teams combined for 26 hits and six homers, second-most in a game at the 15-year-old stadium. It was the first time since 2001 at Rosenblatt Stadium that each team went deep three times. Noah Thigpen (1-5) pitched five innings of relief for the win and JP Robertson (5-2) took the loss. The Trojans were down 6-2 after Brayden Randle and Collin Reuters launched two-run homers to almost the same spot in the right-field seats.Troy's Sean Darnell, who homered in the second inning, came up in the fifth with two outs and bases loaded. Hunter Elliott balked to bring in a run and Darnell singled in two more to cut it to 6-5. Jimmy Janicki's team-leading 21st homer tied it at 6 in the seventh and Boroff, after his two-run double, scored on Houston Markham's base hit to put the Trojans up 9-6.___AP college sports: https://apnews.com/hub/college-sports

Denny Hamlin wins the NASCAR Cup race at Pocono for his third straight victory
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — With every Denny Hamlin victory, speculation about his future grows and talks of retirement are questioned. He signed a two-year extension with Joe Gibbs Racing that runs through 2027 and he insists it will be his last season. At 45, he’s the oldest full-time Cup Series driver in the field, but he can’t stop winning.Hamlin won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway on Sunday for his third consecutive victory and passed the late Kyle Busch for sole possession of ninth place on the all-time wins list.Hamlin last week won his 63rd race in NASCAR’s top series to tie his former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate on the all-time wins list. His eighth career victory at Pocono pushed him ahead of Busch for sole possession of ninth. His recent success — it is his fourth win of the season, not including the non-points All-Star race — has renewed talk that Hamlin should reconsider retirement when his deal with Gibbs expires.“I think for Denny, he wants to leave on top, right? He doesn’t want to leave where it was one year too long,” said JGR co-owner Heather Gibbs. “At this rate, what he’s producing out there, it’s not something you would not consider. We want the best drivers in our cars. Our teams work to put the best cars on track.“If it works out and he’s still producing and he wants to, it’s a huge commitment for him, he’s got his own team that he kind of wants to run. It’s hard when you dangle checkered flags in front of him, too. He so far has put a stop to such talk despite performing at the highest level of his long career.”Hamlin, who wasn’t even sure he wanted to return to honor this two-year extension after losing the championship in last November’s season finale and then the December death of his father in a house fire, understands he’s performing at a high level. But as far as continuing past 2027? It’s not yet on his radar despite how strong he’s been on the track.“I would certainly say it’s the best we’ve been,” Hamlin said. “We come to the racetrack every week knowing we got a great shot to win. The team’s doing an amazing job giving me exactly what I need in the car every single week. That’s why we’re winning.”Sunday’s win comes nearly 20 years to the date after his first career victory, which was at Pocono on June 11, 2006. He swept the races at the Pennsylvania track that year.Hamlin said Pocono has become “like a second home for me.”“First win here, so special here. Pocono has mastered the fan experience from the crowd in the stands to the infield here,” Hamlin said. “Just so happy for this whole Joe Gibbs Racing team. The pit crew is flawless right now. We got it all going.”Despite 64 career victories, this marks the first time in his career that Hamlin has won three consecutive races. The feat tied Richard Petty, who did it in 1966 and 1967, Bobby Allison in 1971 and Darrell Waltrip in 1981. Petty, Allison and Waltrip are all in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.He also took a jab at NASCAR, noting that it was technically his ninth victory at Pocono, but he was stripped of the victory in 2022 when NASCAR said he and Busch’s car’s failed post-race inspection.“They aren’t getting that checkered flag back,” Hamlin said.Tyler Reddick, who drives for the 23XI Racing team owned by Hamlin and Michael Jordan, finished second as Toyota took the top two spots. Hamlin is now 19 points behind Reddick in the Cup Series standings.“Everyone is racing hard for track position. Some of it’s just bad luck, I guess, where you catch cars,” Reddick said. “It’s a bummer. I mean, if the 11 wasn’t the winner, you could consider this a good day. I know we finished second. Scoring the points we did just didn’t get the job done.”When Hamlin tied Busch for all-time wins last week, Hamlin celebrated with a special tribute to Busch. On Sunday, he collected the checkered flag and skipped any tributes to Busch, who died unexpectedly of sepsis at age 41 last month.Toyota drivers have won 10 of 16 races this season, and JGR has accounted for five of them.William Byron finished third in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.“I think this is probably the first time in four months that I’ve been able to drive the car this way, just be able to make moves and have the balance stay with me,” Byron said.Byron was followed by John Hunter Nemechek in fourth in a Toyota for Legacy Motor Club. Nemechek led 42 laps Sunday — double what he’s led the last two years.Kyle Larson was fifth for Hendrick and Erik Jones was sixth for Legacy as Toyota drivers took four of the top six spots.Bell fights through painChristopher Bell, driving with a broken wrist after a horrific wreck last weekend at Michigan that registered as the hardest hit in the era of NASCAR’s new car, led 18 late laps based on strategy but faded to a 26th-place finish.“Certainly we were mired back in the 20s and so I think it was an amazing gamble,” Bell said. “The situation is so hard because you don’t know if you’re racing for the win, if you’re racing to finish the race, and so I don’t stop shifting until about 10 to go. Certainly adverse conditions, like whenever people make quick moves on restarts and get put three-wide or the car gets loose, things like that are very difficult.”Bell expected his injured arm will be a hindrance the next two weeks as NASCAR races the street course in San Diego and the road course in Sonoma, California — two tracks where shifting is heavily used.No rainNASCAR moved the start of the race up two hours to avoid expected rain in the Pocono Mountain region that could alter the completion of the 400-mile race. By doing so, all inclement weather was avoided and the race was run without interruption.Up nextNASCAR makes its inaugural visit to San Diego with a first-of-its-kind street race at Naval Base Coronado. The NASCAR San Diego weekend marks the first NASCAR event ever contested on an active military base, with races Friday, Saturday and Sunday.San Diego will host just the second street course in NASCAR’s modern era. The Chicago street course hosted two national series each of the past three seasons. The race weekend will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy.

Who is Ismail Elfath? What to know about American referee
It's no surprise that America's interest in soccer rises exponentially with the World Cup. However, with the 2026 World Cup being held primarily in the United States, coupled with the fact that the U.S. men's national team won their first game by a dominant 4-1 score over Paraguay and, suddenly us pigskin-loving, baseball-chucking yankees are all about this fancy version of football. That isn't to say that America has had zero influence on the soccer world though. In fact, a very prominent sight throughout this tournament will be referee Ismail Elfath.Elfath was the head referee for the match between Group F opponents Netherlands and Japan, where he handed out a yellow card to the Netherlands' Memphis Depay. Elfath is a very well-respected figure in the soccer referee world, and yes, he's an American; Moroccan-American to be specific.Elfath has been a staple of Major League Soccer officiating ever since he joined the league in 2011. Elfath quickly drew attention on the international circuit as well, becoming a FIFA-listed referee in 2016. Elfath's familiarity with American geography and respect in the soccer world is sure to make him a vital figure in the 2026 World Cup. Here's what to know about him:Who is Ismail Elfath?Elfath, 44, is a Moroccan-American referee, who came to America in 2001 at the age of 18 after winning a diversity visa lottery. Elfath graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in mechanical engineering in 2006. He still resides in Austin. When did Elfath join Major League Soccer?Elfath joined the MLS officiating crew as a fourth official in 2011, making his refereeing debut in 2012. Throughout his years in Major League Soccer, Elfath has accrued numerous honors and accolades, and even a few world firsts. For example, Elfath was the referee for a 2016 USL match between the New York Red Bulls II and Orlando City B that saw the first ever usage of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during a match. The system was still being tested in the United Soccer League at this time.Elfath has been tasked with numerous high-impact games including the 2013 USL Championship, 2015 MLS All-Star Game, and 2022 MLS Cup between Los Angeles FC and the Philadelphia Union. He has been named MLS Referee of the Year twice as well, winning the award in both 2020 and 2022.What work has Elfath done on the international stage?Elfath is not just an American referee either. He's well-established internationally as well, working as a referee in the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He has worked numerous other international tournaments as well.More recently, Elfath was also tasked with refereeing the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup final. That honor itself somewhat distinguishes Elfath as one of the best referees in the North American and Caribbean region.Elfath was in a bit of danger of missing the 2026 World Cup due to an injury he suffered during the 2024 Copa America. However, Elfath underwent numerous tests and evaluations to ensure he was not only fit to referee in the World Cup, but also healthy enough that his injury would likely not flare up again. What games will Elfath referee during 2026 World Cup?It is unknown which games Elfath will referee throughout the tournament as FIFA selects the officiating crews incrementally as the tournament progresses. However, given Elfath's pedigree and FIFA's trust in him to referee in high-pressure situations, it would not be surprising to see Elfath get the nod in numerous important group and knockout stage games throughout the tournament. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY Sports: 2026 FIFA World Cup: What to know about American referee Ismail Elfath

Tyra Banks sues Netflix over ‘America’s Next Top Model’ documentary, alleging defamation
Tyra Banks arrives at an event, April 24, 2025, in Beverly Hills, Calif. (Photo by Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP, File)2026-06-14T20:34:43Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tyra Banks has filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix and the directors of its docuseries “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” alleging that the producers stripped down hours of interview footage to construct a false narrative. In the lawsuit filed Saturday in Los Angeles federal court, the model who created and hosted “America’s Next Top Model” said she was interviewed for 3 ½ hours, during which she took responsibility for some of the show’s controversial decisions. Those interviews were edited down to 16 minutes and manipulated “to support a false and defamatory narrative unrelated to what she actually expressed,” the lawsuit said.“The accountability Ms. Banks took ended up on the cutting room floor. It was there, but viewers were never given the opportunity to see it,” her lawyers wrote. Banks is seeking damages in her lawsuit against Netflix, the directors Daniel Sivan and Mor Loushy and EverWonder Studio. She’s also seeking an injunction barring the use of her image in connection with the docuseries’ soundtrack, released as an album. Emails seeking comments were sent Sunday to the defendants’ representatives. “America’s Next Top Model” launched in 2003 and ran for 24 seasons. In recent years, the reality competition series has undergone a critical reevaluation over accusations of body shaming, manipulation of contestants and problematic photoshoots. Banks has previously addressed those criticisms, acknowledging “the insensitivity of past ANTM moments” and “some really off choices.” Read More The lawsuit contends that the producers of the Netflix docuseries used “selective editing, deliberate omission, and surgical manipulation of continuous footage” to formulate a narrative that Banks allowed a contestant to be sexually assaulted on the show, used the contestant’s trauma to drum up ratings and then couldn’t remember it when asked during the interviews. “Defendants edited the Netflix Series to make it appear that Ms. Banks knew she was being asked about a sexual assault and was intentionally trying to evade the topic,” the lawsuit stated, contending that Banks hadn’t been told — or asked — about the assault during the interview.Banks’ lawyers wrote that she wasn’t permitted to review the docuseries until a day before its Feb. 16 release. According to the lawsuit, she had not been contacted for fact-checking after her interviews, and was not given an opportunity to respond to accusations from other participants. Other judges from the show, including one her lawyers contend holds a grudge against Banks, consulted on the docuseries.“Had Ms. Banks known these individuals were so deeply involved in the formulation of the Netflix Series, also serving as consultants shaping the editorial direction, and that she had been excluded from such a role, it would have raised a red flag,” the lawsuit read. “She would have known she was being set up. She would not have participated.”Banks’ lawyers reached out to Netflix in March to request access to the full footage of her interviews. Netflix and EverWonder denied that request, according to the lawsuit. Since the docuseries’ release, public reaction has been “swift, harsh, and directed squarely at Ms. Banks” — even SMiZE & DREAM, her ice cream shop in Sydney, Australia, has been subject to review bombing on Google, the lawsuit read. The Associated Press sent an email seeking further detail from Banks’ lawyers and representatives on Sunday.“Every other conversation about ANTM’s legacy — including the candid reflection Ms. Banks came prepared to have — is now drowned out by an accusation she was never given the chance to answer,” her lawyers wrote. “This lawsuit is that answer — particularly after her efforts to resolve the matter directly with Netflix and the producers were refused.”

Daichi Kamada’s late header gives Japan a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in World Cup opener for both
Japan celebrates a goal during the World Cup Group F soccer match between the Netherlands and Japan in Arlington, Texas, near Dallas, Sunday, June 14, 2026. (AP Photo/Jessica Tobias)2026-06-14T22:10:47Z ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Daichi Kamada scored on a header off Koki Ogawa’s corner kick in the 88th minute, sending the Samurai Blue fans into a frenzy and giving Japan a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in their World Cup opener on Sunday. While the Dutch extended their unbeaten streak to 16 games in group play, the orange-clad Oranje supporters were stunned by the late goal that left them at 21-2-11 in group play at the World Cup.Virgil Van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville scored off each post for the Netherlands early in the second half, while Keito Nakamura had a goal between those as part of a three-goal flurry in just 14 minutes. An uneventful first half changed quickly after the break for a crowd evenly split at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Dallas Cowboys with the retractable roof that offered relief from the muggy Texas heat, and the giant video board that fans had a hard time keeping their eyes off. Summerville gave the eighth-ranked Dutch the lead in the 64th minute, and Japan was running out of hope when Ogawa sent the corner that Kamada timed perfectly. The ball deflected slightly again on its way toward Bart Verbruggen, who got his hands on it with a sprawling dive but couldn’t keep it from going in. Van Dijk sent a header toward the far post on the right in the 50th minute, bending forward from inside the penalty area as he stared at the ball before it caromed in for the Dutch captain’s 13th international goal. Read More Nakamura answered seven minutes later for 18th-ranked Japan, turning and rifling a shot past Verbruggen from the left side of the arc after taking a pass from Takefusa Kubo.Another seven minutes later, Summerville took a pass from Ryan Gravenberch and sent a left-footed shot to the far left post past Zion Suzuki, where it caromed in again. The Dutch’s most recent loss before the elimination round came the last time the World Cup was in the United States in 1994, when a group play defeat was followed by a quarterfinal loss to Brazil at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. In Group F, the Netherlands plays Sweden on Saturday in Houston, while Japan goes to Monterrey, Mexico, to face Tunisia on Saturday.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

While much of New York City and New Jersey celebrate the Knicks’ extinguishing New York’s long title drought across the Big Four sports leagues (stretching back to the Giants in 2011), Rutgers nation can take pride in seeing one of their own step up big time for the Spurs. Dylan Harper not only played extensive minutes, but he looked like the best Spur on the court for large parts of this series.Despite coming off the bench the entire series, Harper averaged 18 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. As the series got better, so did the rookie out of Rutgers, with his crowning performance coming in an elimination Game 5 at home. Harper led the team with 25 points while also contributing 5 rebounds and 4 assists while playing 31 minutes off the bench. While much of the team struggled, including De’Aaron Fox throughout the series, Harper stepped up in clutch moments and time again. His crafty finishing around the rim caught the eyes of fans nationwide, while his tenacious defending made things difficult for New York throughout the series. He was the second-leading scorer behind Victor Wembanyama in the NBA Finals as a rookie while coming off the bench, which says just about everything you need to know about his career trajectoryIf there is one area where the budding star guard could improve, it would be his three-point shooting. Harper got off to a slow start from deep this series, scoring 16 points in Game 1 on 1-4 from downtown. In Game 2, he missed all three attempts from deep while finishing with 15 points, before going 1-8 from long range during Game 3 at MSG. Coincidentally, that was the lone game the Spurs were able to win over the eventual champion Knicks. Some of those threes were wide open as well, which made me think about just how good Harper could be if he had even a respectable three-point jump shot. In Game 4, Harper went 8-12 from the field and converted 3 of 6 threes, coming up with 21 points despite the Spurs blowing an unfathomable 29-point lead, the largest in Finals history. Due to the catastrophic loss, San Antonio went from a possible 2-2 tied series to trailing New York 3-1 as the series returned to Texas. In Game 5, Harper put it all together when his team needed it most. On a night where starting guards Stephon Castle (1-10) and De’Aaron Fox (3-15) combined for 13 points on horrifically poor shooting, the New Jersey native came off the bench and dropped 25 points. As in Game 4, this time he cashed in on two of four from downtown while continuing to play aggressive defense, getting stops and forcing a backcourt violation.Despite this, Harper was relegated to the bench for some of the game’s most important swings, including when the Knicks roared back yet again. When the Spurs rookie returned to the floor, the Knicks were trailing, and Harper was unable to hit the game-tying layup. With San Antonio then trailing by three, Landry Shamet fouled Harper off an inbounds pass to prevent a three-point shot attempt, and Harper missed both free throws; the second one may have been an intentional miss. But none of that takes away from the series he had and the poise he showed as a rookie under pressure.During the Spurs’ postgame press conference, Devin Vassell told reporters, “I know that he’s gonna put so much work into the offseason. It’s not just offensively, but defensively, he’s made a lot of plays. He’s grown so much. And was he 20, 21 years old? I mean, the sky’s the limit for him.”With De’Aaron Fox going 24-70 from the field and contributing to some of the most head-scratching moments for the Spurs, many fans and analysts see him being traded this offseason, possibly to the Nets. Even if not, it will be hard to see how Harper does not crack the starting lineup next season after outproducing both Castle and Fox, all while coming off the bench in basketball’s biggest stage. To support me and my work, please follow @arnavsarkar100 on X!

Jets fans predict a surprising player will emerge as the second option behind Garrett Wilson
Nov 30, 2025; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA;New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell (15) reacts after a touchdown catch against the Atlanta Falcons during the second half at MetLife Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images | Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images This week in our SB Nation Reacts survey we polled Jets fans about which skill player would be the second option in the passing game behind Garrett Wilson. The results are in.I have to admit this is a result that surprised me quite a bit.The Jets selected two pass catchers, Sadiq and Cooper, in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft. Both will almost certainly step into the starting lineup. Immediate production will be expected.Mitchell has been in the league for two years. While he has shown flashes, most notably in the Jets’ 2025 victory over the Atlanta Falcons but only has 56 catches for 765 yards, and 2 touchdowns in 33 games. It isn’t that Mitchell lacks upside. It’s just a surprise for me to see Mitchell get this sort of love over the two players the Jets just selected at the top of the NFL Draft.Time will tell which target emerges as the second option.Bet on the game with FanDuel Sportsbook, SB Nation’s official sportsbook partner!

Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Pittsburgh Pirates got a positive update on Konnor Griffin and his recovery from an elbow injury.Griffin was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 31 due to a right elbow strain. Although he’s already exceeded the 10 days, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington revealed Griffin is set to go Pirate City in Bradenton, Fla. for a ‘legitimate throwing progression.’“It’s a good sign that he is throwing,” Cherington said on 93.7 The Fan, via TribLive. “He was able to do all the other baseball activity really the whole time. Throwing was obviously going to be the last thing to come. We wanted to make sure he was 100% asymptomatic before he started the throwing progression. We kind of got through that hurdle. Now he’s into that throwing progression.”Griffin was told to take two weeks off from throwing, as he hasn’t played shortstop since May 27.“With this particular issue that he’s coming off of, we want to make sure it’s a legitimate throwing progression. This is not going to be a two- or three-day thing,” Cherington said. “He’ll continue to build up volume and distance. At some point, assuming that goes well, he’ll probably hit a rehab assignment of some kind. We don’t have a specific date for that yet. The fact that he’s in his throwing progression means that, hopefully, that’s not coming too long.”Griffin is hitting .270 with four home runs and 22 RBIs in his rookie season.More MLB: Pirates 'Grinders' Lead Offense For Much-Needed Win

UFC Freedom 250: White House fights delayed as thunderstorm nears D.C.
UFC Freedom 250 was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET. Mother Nature has forced the UFC and White House to adjust course. With thunderstorms projected to hit Washington D.C. during the much-publicized card, the UFC has delayed its fights to approximately 9 p.m. The promotion announced earlier in the afternoon that "live event coverage" will began at 8 p.m. ET on Paramount+, but the actual fights are being held back for potentially an hour.Given how the weather forecast is looking, that might not be the only move the promotion has to make Sunday. The first fight of the night is supposed to be a featherweight bout between Diego Lopes and Steve Garcia.Concerns had built around UFC Freedom 250 in the past few days, as the weather forecast predicted potential rain. MMA events are almost always held indoors, with outdoor events fleetingly rare. The only other open-air event in UFC history was UFC 112 in 2010, which presented enough headaches that White didn't try a repeat until he was presented the White House South Lawn.White was defiant when presented with the forecasts, pledging Wednesday to hold the event as planned in the face of rain, snow or even lightning and doubling down on Friday, while also alluding to a legal challenge against the event:"Listen," he told reporters. "The show goes on, on Sunday, no matter what happens. We're going. I don't care if it rains, snows, whatever happens, we have a fight."I'm sick and tired of hearing about the weather now, and all the other bulls*** surrounding this event," White added, perhaps in reference to an unsuccessful lawsuit that the anti-corruption watchdog group, Public Integrity Project, filed on behalf of two plaintiffs on June 6.Judging from a tweet from its rapid response account, the White House also didn't appreciate how the weather was being anticipated. The White House card has been in the works since July 4 of last year, when the president publicly floated the idea and soon found a receptive audience in his friend, UFC CEO Dana White. The event was soon confirmed and had its lineup announced in March. The event was highly anticipated and represented a day in the sun for a sport that was once fighting for its life when Trump granted the UFC a lifeline by allowing it to host events on his properties while it faced regulatory scrutiny. White has said the event will cost upwards of $60 million, with the promotion footing the bill, though the actual finances behind the event have been heavily disputed.

Japan twice come from behind to draw with Netherlands in World Cup
FIFA World CupNetherlands 2 - 2 Japan FTDaichi Kamada's late header rescued a deserved point for Japan against the Netherlands in their opening World Cup game in Dallas. One of the most anticipated games in the tournament's group stages was a slow burner before developing into a second-half thriller, after the Dutch side's Premier League contingent looked to have set them on their way to an important victory.Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and West Ham United forward Crysencio Summerville were on target before Crystal Palace's Kamada struck with a deft header to divert Koki Ogawa's effort with two minutes left and secure a draw.Ronald Koeman's side posed the greater threat in a subdued first half, with Donyell Malen the main danger, forcing three saves from Japan keeper Zion Suzuki. The game burst into life after the restart, captain Van Dijk heading the Dutch in front after 51 minutes with a precise header from Liverpool team-mate Ryan Gravenberch's cross.Japan were never out of contention and they were level six minutes later when Keito Nakamura's low shot carried too much power for Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen. The Netherlands responded with a moment of real quality to restore their advantage after 64 minutes, Summerville cutting inside the area before sending a low drive beyond the outstretched arm of Suzuki.Japan continued to press and got their reward through Kamada, to the delight of the thousands of Samurai Blue fans who were in Dallas to support their country.Analysis: Japan spirit earns rewardJapan have been labelled as World Cup dark horses, showing their quality by rising to 18th in the Fifa rankings with a record that includes a friendly win over England at Wembley in March. And in this entertaining opening Group F game, they showed all the qualities to suggest they can make a big impact in the tournament.Japan fell behind twice, but were never once out of contention as they demonstrated resilience, spirit and a relentless approach to earn what could prove to be a vital point. In contrast, there will be a feeling of disappointment in the Dutch camp for coach Koeman and his players after they twice squandered a winning position and were forced to settle for a draw.Even after Summerville gave them the lead for the second time they never looked comfortable - their side containing eight Premier League players in the starting line-up - and in the end they could not protect their advantage in the face of Japan's attacks. They will see this as a big opportunity missed. What's next for these teams? The Netherlands' next game in Group F is against Sweden on Saturday, 20 June (18:00 BST). The high school pitching rule was the only thing that was going to get Sullivan's Jaden Norris off the mound Saturday night at the Class 2A Lawrence Central Semistate for high school baseball — and unfortunately for the Arrows, it did.And in a nine-inning game whose last three frames were littered with twists and turns, top-ranked Evansville Mater Dei was happy to see him go, scoring three two-out runs in his forced absence and earning a trip to the state finals with a 5-2 win."It hurts to see anybody lose a game like that," Sullivan coach Tony Steimel said after it was over. "Really well played by both sides, both teams had shots to win it . . . you can't hang your head about anything like that."Norris, first of all, has five pitches he'd no doubt like to get back — the first five of the game. A hit batter, a four-pitch walk and then a double steal had runners at second and third with nobody out.Norris struck out one batter but then Dylan Murphy, the sophomore half-brother of recent West Vigo star Carter Murphy, turned a low-90s fastball around and ripped a line drive up the middle, glancing off Norris's calf and bouncing 20 feet in the air for an infield hit and an RBI. Norris turned the pain, which had to have been considerable, into fuel and retired the next 14 batters — although the first of those was an RBI bunt by Mater Dei's Nick Collins.Even after the Wildcats starting reaching base again, Norris showed he wasn't going to let them score, pitching out of bases-loaded, one-out and man-on-third, no-out situations."He just gets stronger as the game goes on," Steimel said, "and his velo [velocity] gets harder . . . he's just a winner, a flat-out winner."But while he was pitching so well, Mater Dei's Spencer Schiff took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh. Then things got interesting.Jaxon Zollman broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle, and Zane Abbott followed with an infield single, plus an overthrow at first that put runners at second and third with nobody out. Mater Dei's Darret Branson relieved Schiff and walked the first batter he faced and the winning run was aboard.Paul Ridgway dumped a one-out single into shallow center field for a game-tying single and continued to second on the throw home — second and third, one out — but Carter Mischler's grounder to the left side was backhanded and thrown desperately to the plate, where Schiff — who had moved to catcher when he was replaced on the mound — made a huge catch and diving tag to keep the winning run from scoring.Norris pitched a one-two-three eighth inning, and the Golden Arrows loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on two walks and another hit by Zollman. But two strikeouts followed, the latter of those a full-count pitch — that would have either forced in the winning run or retired the side — called a strike to much anguish by people wearing purple. And then Norris reached his 120-pitch limit.Asked about his team's 24-4 season, Steimel said, "I couldn't be happier. I couldn't say [the season] was beyond our expectations, because we aimed so high . . . and we could have won the state with one more hit. It's been the best season of my life, and I thank [the Arrows] for taking me there."• Sullivan 2, Heritage Christian 0 — In Satrday's second semifinal game, Ty Hamilton allowed his first hit in two weeks — but only one — and Sullivan got a pair of clutch two-out hits. Mater Dei beat University 6-2 in Saturday's first game.Hamilton, who combined with Jaden Norris for a five-inning no-hitter in last Saturday's regional, walked four batters but yielded only a ground-rule double by the Eagles' Alex Jackson with one out in the top of the sixth.By that time his team and its small-ball attack — "If we score three runs, we think we're in pretty good shape," Steimel had said earlier in the week — had produced the only two runs he needed.Zollman led off the bottom of the second inning with a single, was bunted to second by Abbott and scored on a two-out single by Spencer Hanks.Sullivan's other run came in the bottom of the fifth. Karsen Norris was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Mischler's two-out hit.HERITAGE CHRISTIAN (AB-R-H-RBI) — Benson lf 3-0-0-0, A.Jackson cf 3-0-1-0, Gregory 2b 3-0-0-0, Meriweather 3b 3-0-0-0, Sponseller rf 3-0-0-0, Marshall 1b 2-0-0-0, Perraut dh 2-0-0-0, Smith pr 0-0-0-0, Williams c 1-0-0-0, McVey ph-c 1-0-0-0, Wilhite ss 1-0-0-0. Davis-Woodhall doubles up at LA Grand Prix
American Tara Davis-Woodhall competes in the long jump at the Los Angeles Grand Prix athletics meeting (Meg Oliphant)Olympic long jump gold medallist Tara Davis-Woodhall dominated her signature event and added a runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles on Sunday at the Los Angeles Grand Prix athletics meeting.Davis-Woodhall won the long jump with a wind-aided leap of 7.25m, buoyed by a tailwind of 3.3m/sec, but also produced a jump of 7.20m, with an allowable wind of 1.2m/sec.That gave her the top mark in the world this season and the longest jump since Germany's Malaika Mihambo cleared 7.30m in 2019.Her heroics on the runway came less than an hour after the 27-year-old American finished second in the 100m hurdles in 12.47sec.Olympic gold medallist Masai Russell won 100m hurdles in an impressive 12.26sec and now owns the top three times of the season -- including a blistering 12.14 in Xiamen last month.Former world champion Sha'Carri Richardson won her first 100m of the season, 10.99sec in the face of a slight headwind of -0.2m/sec.Richardson out-distanced training partner Kayla White (11.08) and Tamari Davis (11.11) and said it "felt good" for a first outing at the distance."I definitely am just prepared to keep training, keep running and just finish out the season stronger than before and just work on the things that are my weaknesses," said Richardson, who was coming off back-to-back fourth-place 200m finishes in Diamond League meetings in China. The meet at the University of Southern California's Allyson Felix Field -- just a stone's throw from the Los Angeles Coliseum that will host athletics at the 2028 LA Olympics -- had Richardson and others thinking about the Games."Even though it's a ways away, it's still right around the corner," Richardson said. "Every race, every practice it's still in the back of our minds that is what we're truly preparing for."Every single time I get on the track, I'm thinking about LA," added Richardson, who won the 100m world title in 2023 but settled for silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics.American Kenny Bednarek, who has two Diamond League 200m victories this season, won the men's 100m in a quick 9.72sec, aided by a tailwind of 2.4m/sec -- above the allowable limit of 2.0.US veteran Christian Coleman was second in 9.84 and Ghana's Abdul-Rasheed Saminu third in 9.88, as Botswana's 2024 Olympic 200m gold medallist Letsile Tebogo placed fifth in 9.95.bb/ksb/dw

A’s Pitching Implodes in Las Vegas Series Finale Blowout Loss
Jun 14, 2026; Summerlin, Nevada, USA; Athletics pitcher Luis Medina (46) pitches in the fifth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Las Vegas Ballpark. Mandatory Credit: Boz Bloom-Imagn Images | Boz Bloom-Imagn Images The Athletics and Colorado Rockies met in the series finale of their three-game interleague series on a scorching afternoon in Las Vegas. The Rockies avoided the sweep, defeating the A’s 23-9 in an absurd game that served as a fitting cap to the A’s eventful week in their future home.Rockies Capitalize off A’s MistakeThe Rockies struck right away against A’s starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs. With one out in the first inning, A’s third baseman Max Muncy made a throwing error, allowing the Rockies hitter to reach second base. Springs retired the next batter before Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman hit his 19th home run of the season, a two-out, two-run shot to center field.A’s Offense Active EarlyA’s center fielder Lawrence Butler led off the bottom of the first with a single against Rockies pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano. Nick Kurtz drew a four-pitch walk, advancing Butler to second. Then, left fielder Tyler Soderstrom hit his 19th double of the season, a line drive to right field that scored Butler and cut the A’s deficit in half.Right fielder Carlos Cortes came up and kept the line rolling, lining a two-run single to right field to give the A’s a 3-2 lead. Sugano did not retire the first four batters he faced, immediately blowing his team’s lead.heating up 🔥#VoteAthletics | https://t.co/SBezYOtGtGpic.twitter.com/bzwx5xcHWT— Athletics (@Athletics) June 14, 2026With one out, A’s catcher Jonah Heim singled to right, moving Cortes from first to third. Muncy hit a sacrifice fly, knocking Cortes in for the host’s fourth run of the first.Colorado Back in FrontThe Rockies opened the second inning with two straight singles, making it first and third with nobody out. Athletics second baseman Zack Gelof made a diving stop and strong throw to retire Colorado left fielder Troy Johnston, but the visitors’ third run scored on that RBI groundout. A couple batters later, the Rockies re-took the lead. Springs gave up Willi Castro’s fourth home run of the season, a two-run blast just over the left field wall. Allowing five runs, including two home runs, over the first two innings was not the start Springs and the Athletics were looking for this afternoon.Kurtz Comes Through A’s shortstop Alika Williams singled to start the second inning, giving him six hits in his past six at-bats. Kurtz tied the game with an RBI double to the left-center gap, bringing Williams home from first base.Kurtzy ties it 👏#VoteAthletics | https://t.co/SBezYOtGtGpic.twitter.com/8DYc0vY2Ov— Athletics (@Athletics) June 14, 2026Springs Struggles ContinueBoth pitchers tossed 1-2-3 third innings, keeping the game tied at five. In the fourth, the Rockies jumped back in front. Center fielder Cole Carrigg hit an infield single and then third baseman Kyle Karros crushed an RBI double, putting the visitors up one.Colorado was not done tagging Springs. Johnston hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to extend his team’s lead to three. The A’s starter allowed a career-high eight runs over four innings of work, though two were unearned. Starting the fly-ball, home run–prone pitcher a second time in this hitter-friendly ballpark proved costly, as Springs gave up three more home runs in his latest losing effort.A’s Get One BackDown three, the A’s offense went right to work. In the bottom of the fourth, first baseman Jeff McNeil walked, followed by Williams’ second single of the game. Kurtz’s RBI groundout scored McNeil for the A’s sixth run of the game.Rockies Offense on FireRight-hander Luis Medina entered out of the A’s bullpen to pitch the fifth inning. With one out, Goodman hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to left field to restore his team’s three-run cushion. The Rockies scored their tenth run on Karros’ RBI single. The inning snowballed from there as the visitors scored four more runs, taking advantage of poor pitching from Medina and shaky A’s outfield defense. The Rockies’14th run scored when Butler dropped a catchable fly ball in center field that should have been the third out of the inning.Endless Scoring In the A’s fifth, Gelof doubled on a popup that was not caught, extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Muncy hit his third home run of the season, a two-run, two-out home run to bring his team a bit closer. In the bottom of the sixth, the Rockies brought in right-handed reliever Blas Castaño, who pitched a scoreless inning. The Rockies hit-parade continued in the seventh. They scored four runs off Basso, with one coming when Cortes became the second A’s outfielder to lose a fly ball in the sun.Soderstrom responded to the visitors four-spot by hitting his 12th home run of the season, a 462 foot solo shot to center. A few batters later, Gelof tried scoring from first on Heim’s double but he was thrown out at the plate. A’s reliever Scott Barlow gave up a single and then walked two to load the bases. Castro came up and hit his second home run of the game, a 444-foot grand slam, to make it 22-9 and set a new Rockies franchise record for runs scored in a game. With the score completely out of hand, the Athletics put position player Carlos Cortes on the mound. Cortes kept the circus going by allowing the first batter he faced to homer, pushing the Rockies’ lead to 23-9. Cortes recorded the final five outs, finishing with a better pitching line than any of the A’s’ actual pitchers who appeared in the game.It was only fitting that the A’s pitching staff saved their worst performance of the season for the Vegas finale. As the saying goes, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and the team will be more than happy to leave this one behind.Tomorrow, the Athletics start a new series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at their other temporary home. Right-hander J.T. Ginn, who is 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA, will take the mound at West Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park. He will be opposed by Pirates right-hander Jared Jones, who will make his fourth MLB start since returning from UCL surgery.

The fight is meant to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States (which is in 20 days), but just happens to be held on Trump’s 80th birthday.UFC organizers set up an eight-sided, 30-foot cage on the lawn (to the tune of $60 million) and gave out 85,000 tickets for a watch party. For those unable to attend in person, there are ways to watch online. The White House says UFC footed the bill, but noted both the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration “allocated significant resources and manpower” to the enterprise. How to watch the UFC Freedom 250 FightThe UFC Freedom 250 fight will stream only on Paramount+, which Dana White first announced in December. The event begins at 8 p.m. ET, and will be held rain or shine. That’s an especially important thing to note, as Washington D.C. is currently under a severe thunderstorm watch that will remain in place until 11 p.m. Forecasters have predicted it’s possible the city and surrounding area will be pelted by heavy rain and damaging winds. The worst part of the storms will roll through between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.“This first band of storms may produce damaging winds, large hail, torrential rain, and isolated tornadoes,” said WTOP Meteorologist Mike Stinneford. “We’ll probably see rapid development once storms start to form.”WTOP Meteorologist Matt Ritter also noted the area could receive “torrential downpours.”The post How to Watch Trump’s Birthday UFC Freedom 250 White House Fight appeared first on TheWrap.

Denny Hamlin takes late lead to capture 3rd straight season win, 8th Cup Series win at Pocono
LONG POND — Denny Hamlin adds to the Pocono Raceway legend as he wins the 2026 Great American Getaway 400, his 8th-career win at the Tricky Triangle and third consecutive win of the racing season. Hamlin was trailing Christopher Bell, who was leading for majority of the final 20 laps. But Bell, who was running dangerously low on gas, ran out in the final few laps and Hamlin passed him to secure the win.The 45-year-old proved why Pocono was his track, winning pole position during qualifying, then leading the field after Stage 1. But after finishing 9th in Stage 2, it was a concerted effort to make up that ground in the final stage."I gotta go past seven cars, it's not easy to pass here," Hamlin said after the race. "But the crew chief Chris Gayle had faith that we could do it, that we could get the restarts we needed. There were a few key ones that I gained, going from sixth place to second, and then from second to first. From that point on we got control of the race."Hamlin's win also marks the first time in his career he's won three straight races, and while he doesn't think it'll "go on the résumé," it'll be something he'll certainly remember.Sunday's Cup Series race was the cleanest of the weekend slate, aside from Zane Smith spinning out on Turn 1 (his day ended after 66 laps) and Casey Mears lost a front wheel early in Stage 3. John H Nemecheck had one of the strongest runs of the day, leading a race-high 42 laps before finishing in fourth place.More from race weekend: Justin Allgaier wins 5th race of season at O'Reilly Series run at Pocono2026 Great American Getaway 400 Race ResultsNameLaps Finished1. Yankees embrace 'chip on our shoulder' in series win at Blue Jays
The Yankees returned to Rogers Centre this weekend for the first time since Oct. 8 when the Blue Jays ended New York's 2025 campaign in the ALDS, winning the three-game series with Sunday's 8-3 victory and improving to 4-3 against Toronto after splitting the May 18-21 set at Yankee Stadium."It feels good to shake hands and be celebrating a win in here after -- which, obviously, that was very difficult for us in this building last year," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, whose 43-27 team leads the AL East -- one game ahead of the 41-27 Tampa Bay Rays -- entering this week's six-game homestand. "So, it is a new year. You've got to keep going all the time. But what a good finish to an outstanding road trip against a couple good teams heading into the off day."After Paul Goldschmidt's two-run home run broke a 1-1 tie in the ninth inning of Saturday's 3-1 win, Ben Rice did the same to put the Yankees ahead Sunday. Jose Caballero added a three-run shot to widen the 8-3 gap for good."It just speaks to the mentality of the group," said Rice, whose 2-for-5 afternoon brought his slash line to .293/.387/.611 with 19 home runs and 47 RBI through 65 games. "I feel like everyone's got that next-man-up mentality -- regardless of who's on the mound, regardless of the situation."Following Friday's 8-5 loss to open the series, the Yankees rallied in consecutive games and are positioned well entering this week's three-game set with the Chicago White Sox, which starts with Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. opener. New York does not play the Blue Jays again until a three-game series Aug. 14-16 in Toronto."Chip on our shoulder," said Will Warren, whose no-decision start included a season-high eight hits allowed while yielding two runs in four innings. "We don't like those guys over there and they don't like us. Finding any way to win is always a good one, especially on the road."

Peyton Manning's Omaha Productions is already getting roughly $60M per year from ESPN
Many eyebrows were raised at the news that ESPN is poised to pay Pat McAfee $60 million per year. One of his former Colts teammates, however, has already made it to that neighborhood.Via Brendon Kleen of Awful Announcing, Andrew Marchand said in a recent episode of his podcast that ESPN is currently paying Peyton Manning's Omaha Productions an annual fee in that same range.Omaha has an extensive relationship with ESPN, with the Monday night ManningCast serving as the centerpiece of the relationship. The added value of the alternate broadcast has always been a major question, since it's likely siphoning viewers who would watch the main broadcast in lieu of adding new eyeballs. In the years since ESPN beefed up the main booth to feature Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, the numbers for the ManningCast have consistently softened.Beyond the ManningCast, Omaha produces other shows and podcasts for ESPN.This news will serve only to make Stephen A. Smith even more determined to complete the $60 million trifecta.

Knicks future outlook: Free agency, draft, trade options for newly minted champions
Knicks future outlook: Free agency, draft, trade options for newly minted champions originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Knicks looked head-and-shoulders above the rest of the East during this year's storybook title run. That gap will shrink next season. While New York is set to return mostly the same roster, the Celtics will be adding a full year of Jayson Tatum. The Pacers will have Tyrese Haliburton return. The Pistons will be a year wiser. And other contenders may spring up. New York should still be the favorites to make it back to the Finals and defend their title. They will have limited flexibility to make improvements to their roster though. They are locked into eight guaranteed contracts next season, and they don't have the cap space or draft picks to make wholesale changes. Giannis Antetokounmpo ain't walking through that door. The Knicks don't have to make wholesale changes though, and they're not at risk of losing anyone who is absolutely critical to their success. Here's the situation that they are looking at this summer.NOH: Knicks heal decades of heartbreakKnicks offseason previewLimited free agency spendingThe Knicks will return all of their starters and most of their bench. They are already an expensive team, which limits their summer spending. They will not have cap space and are projected to be into the luxury tax for the third straight season, with concerns that they will be above the second apron. Those tax issues ideally shouldn't stop them from bringing back free agent Mitchell Robinson. New York has his Bird rights and the ability to pay him more than anyone. Doing so will severely hamper their flexibility going forward and push them into the dreaded second apron penalties, but the price is worth it. Robinson is a great defender, an outstanding offensive rebounder, and an important cog in the Knicks' machine. He earned $13 million this past season while giving New York about $20 million worth of production based on my salary model. At just 28 years old, he could earn a starting-level contract somewhere else if the Knicks decide that he is too expensive to keep. If the Knicks do let Robinson walk, then they don't have great avenues to replace him. Their spending this summer will be limited to minimum salaries and the $6 million taxpayer mid-level exception. There are some decisions deeper on the bench. Landry Shamet is an unrestricted free agent and should get a decent raise from the $2.3 million that he made last year. Jose Alvarado has a $4.5 million player option that he may opt out of. Alvarado could get a multi-year deal in the open market as an unrestricted free agent. Mohammed Diawara looked intriguing in limited minutes. He's a restricted free agent, and he may be a casualty of the team's limited spending options. MORE: Jalen Brunson becomes legend with Game 5 performanceDraft picks for 2026The Knicks have the No. 24 and 55 picks in the upcoming draft. Those picks have dropped in value dramatically as many players have withdrawn from the draft over the past month. The choices at 24 aren't particularly promising. Joshua Jefferson is an older prospect with limited upside, but he's the type of smart jack-of-all-trades forward who could step in immediately and provide quality minutes. Zuby Ejiofor and Tarris Reed are NBA-ready upperclassmen who can defend at a high level, but neither projects as much of a scorer. The back end of the second round looks even bleaker. It's exceedingly unlikely that the team finds someone who can help them this year. It may be wiser to try and trade that pick or select a draft-and-stash foreign prospect who may blossom down the road. MORE: SN's latest NBA Mock DraftWhat the Knicks can tradeThe Knicks emptied out most of the war chest in trading for Bridges two years ago. They can trade their 2026 picks on draft night. After the draft, their 2033 first-round pick becomes available to move. That's not a ton of ammunition to go after a big fish. Antetokounmpo expressed interest at some points in coming to New York, and he is likely to get moved. But the Knicks simply don't have enough to create the best package without trading multiple high-level starters and trying to create some sort of complex three, four, or five-team trade. New York doesn't have to make splashy moves in the trade market to get back to this stage anyway. The Knicks overachieved in large part due to their excellent chemistry, so it makes sense for them to run the same group back.

Iran World Cup coach says 'impacted' by politics but ignoring 'hype'
Iran's head coach Amir Ghalenoei said his team are simply at the World Cup to 'represent the respectful people of Iran, be it the Iranians inside Iran or the Iranian diaspora' (Patrick T. FALLON)Iran's coach Amir Ghalenoei said on Sunday political tensions and visa issues have damaged his side's preparations for the World Cup but insisted his players will not "pay attention to any of the hype."Iran have arrived at the tournament under the shadow of a bitter diplomatic row, after the United States -- in military conflict with Iran for months -- refused to issue visas for some team support staff. They play their opener against New Zealand in Los Angeles on Monday, marking the first time that a World Cup host has hosted a country with which it is at war.Protests are planned outside the stadium by members of the Iranian diaspora opposed to the nation's hardline regime, and there have been threats that the Iran team could walk off the pitch if anti-government banners are displayed."We are here to perform a good match, a high-quality match. We don't pay attention to any of the hype and anything that goes on around us," Ghalenoei said in a press conference in response to a question from AFP."Naturally, all teams have their own problems, and in many countries, many things happen that have nothing to do with football."The coach said his team are simply at the World Cup to "represent the respectful people of Iran, be it the Iranians inside Iran or the Iranian diaspora.""We are not political people... football is separate from politics," said Ghalenoei. The press conference took place barely an hour after a peace deal between the US and Iran was announced, bringing an "immediate and permanent" end to miltary operations on all fronts.Controversy surrounding the Iran team has drawn headlines but is far from the only political issue affecting the World Cup that the US is co-hosting with Mexico and Canada.Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry to the US for the World Cup, as have been many fans."It's not just Iran that has been impacted, as you know," said star striker Mehdi Taremi."Others, including a referee, have been impacted."He said the tension surrounding the tournament "undermines that joy and it undermines the message of FIFA or people, which is about football that brings about peace.""I have felt the tension from the first moment we arrived at this World Cup, and whenever at any tournament there is tension, of course, we don't have the same beautiful experience that we always talk about, about peace, joy for the people of every country."Iran was originally supposed to base their training camp in the US, but switched to Tijuana in Mexico at late notice."We arrived late, and we didn't have enough time to adjust... it will affect us, but God willing, I know that my players are very determined to do their utmost and show the highest quality," said Ghalenoei."Of course, our camp was changed twice, first it was in the United States, then we were transferred to Mexico and of course that impacts us," the coach added."But we Iranians make opportunities out of hardship, and we don't think about anything other than bringing joy to our people, and we will do our utmost, and the rest is up to God the Almighty."Iran has never reached the knockout rounds of a World Cup. Their Group G also contains Belgium and Egypt.amz/gj
