Royals vs. Nationals June 16 game discussion
WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 15: Royals shortstop Bobby Witt, Jr. (7) waits for a pitch while fielding in front of the royal blue digital scoreboard behind him during the Kansas City Royals versus Washington Nationals Major League Baseball (MLB) game on June 15, 2026 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.. (Photo by Randy Litzinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Royals are at the point in the season where it’s only the sickos who are watching on random Tuesday weeknights, especially when there’s also a World Cup game in Kansas City the same evening. If any bandwagon fans are left, I question your judgement—unless you’re really, really bored. In any case, we welcome you, no matter your fandom history. It’s another interleague game against the Washington Nationals. Thankfully, the Royals have been able to score some runs over the last week or so. Even if they lose, there are at least some moments of baseball joy.Tonight, it’s Michael Wacha on the mound against the Nationals, who are starting old friend Foster Griffin. I’m so happy Griffin is back in the big leagues—I remember him finally getting to the big leagues in 2020 only for him to get hurt in his very first appearance.Royals 6/16 lineupNationals 6/16 lineup

Umpire hilariously urged Padres manager to show more passion if he wanted to get ejected
Padres manager Craig Stammen had mentioned earlier in the season that he would cover his mouth during arguments in order to avoid ending up on a Jomboy lip-reading breakdown video. Well, he deployed that strategy on Saturday, and it didn't matter. Jomboy got him anyway. But the real star of the show was umpire Chris Conroy who basically mocked Stammen for his disingenuous argument. The entire saga started after Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts took a 93 mph sinker to the head in the fifth inning against Orioles pitcher Trey Gibson. Bogaerts left the game but would return to the lineup Sunday. But after seeing a star player take a pitch like that to the head, it was obvious that the Padres would attempt some payback. The problem: They were really bad at it.San Diego needed three attempts over two at-bats to hit Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson. And when Ron Marinaccio finally hit Henderson in the ninth inning, the Padres pitcher was ejected after a quick conference. That was what brought Stammen out of the dugout, and really, Conroy saw through the entire charade. (Warning: Video contains NSFW language)Conroy said something to the effect of, "Do something a little more, and I'll get ya." He knew Stammen wanted to get ejected for show, but he needed to make it more convincing than that. Stammen obliged and ramped up the intensity. That drew this response from Conroy: "All right. That's good. A little passion. I like it."Conroy was too funny for that. More umpires should get in on the joke when managers are being performative. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Umpire urged Padres manager to show more passion in argument breakdown video

'He's earned the right': Michael Vaughan's powerful message amid Ben Stokes captaincy crisis
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed Ben Stokes to remain England skipper despite the controversy that led to his suspension from the second Test against New Zealand.Stokes was left out of England's squad for the ongoing Test at The Oval after breaching a team curfew following the opening match of the series at Lord's. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson was also stood down after both players violated the midnight protocol set by the England and Wales Cricket Board. The incident has generated intense debate about Stokes' future, with speculation ranging from a possible resignation as captain to retirement from international cricket. The 35-year-old has not yet publicly addressed the matter.Speaking on The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show, Vaughan acknowledged that Stokes had made a serious mistake but insisted that the all-rounder deserved the opportunity to continue leading England because of everything he has contributed to the national side.“I think Ben Stokes has done so much for English cricket: he screwed up, he knows that,” Vaughan said. The former England captain admitted the situation reflected poorly on the team, particularly because the breach involved the captain himself.“We all know he screwed up and it’s a terrible look for the team when the captain breaks the protocol."However, Vaughan also questioned whether the ECB could be considering a longer-term move away from Stokes as leader.“But there’s something in me that just wonders whether the ECB have kind of gone: ‘OK, is it time to move Ben Stokes out of the way?’”Despite those concerns, Vaughan made it clear that he hopes Stokes is given another chance.“I hope not. If there’s someone that’s earned the right to come back as the captain of this team, it’s Ben Stokes.”The ECB's decision to suspend Stokes and Atkinson came after a night out in London that reportedly ended in a confrontation involving Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa. While backing Stokes' return, Vaughan also praised the ECB for acting decisively once the incident emerged.“I actually think this week they’ve dealt with this really well,” said Vaughan, referring to the ECB.“They’ve got it out there into the public domain quickly.”Vaughan acknowledged that handling the issue would have been particularly difficult for England managing director Rob Key, who had spent recent months working closely with Stokes on improving team standards and culture.“I don’t think it will have been easy for Rob Key [England’s managing director] to deal with this because he’s been working with Ben for three or four months on this protocol of making sure the culture is a little bit better.”At the same time, Vaughan felt disciplinary action was unavoidable.“I do think they had to suspend him.”With Stokes unavailable and questions continuing over his future, Joe Root has stepped in to captain England for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval.

Trump’s ambassador mocked over warning that jet skis pose “serious risk” of sexual assault
In a bizarre video that is being compared to a Saturday Night Live sketch, the office of the U.S. Ambassador to The Bahamas, led by appointee Herschel Walker, warned Americans visiting the archipelagic country that “Jet ski rentals pose a serious risk of injury, death, and sexual assault.” In the video, Walker said that injuries and deaths have been caused by people riding jet skis in shallow waters. He then clarifies, “Americans have also been sexually assaulted by jet ski operators who take victims to isolated islands,” and adds that operators may be unlicensed, uninsured, and may not properly maintain the skis. Related Anti-LGBTQ+ Muslims tried to go to a GOP convention. Christian conservatives bullied them to tears. Numerous social media users mocked the message for its awkward phrasing, with many saying they couldn’t tell if the video was real or a parody, and at least one person claiming that Walker, a former NFL player, has brain damage. One commenter jokingly asked, “Jet ski rentals pose a risk of sexual assault?? How wrong are you using a friggin jetski?” SAFETY ALERT: Ambassador Herschel Walker has an important message for Americans visiting The Bahamas: Jet ski rentals pose a serious risk of injury, death, and sexual assault. CINCINNATI — Kodai Senga said he was ready to go, and the Mets are hoping that he can carry over his latest success in the minor leagues. After missing nearly two months with lumbar spine inflammation and a brief pause with ulnar nerve irritation, Senga will return to the mound for the Mets' Tuesday matchup with the Reds at 7:10 p.m. at Great American Ball Park. The Mets could use a serious lift following Monday's news that Christian Scott had been placed on the injured list with a right hip impingement. The club is now leaning more heavily on Sean Manaea, who has one start under his belt this season, and Senga, who has allowed 20 earned runs in 20 innings this season. There is another void in the rotation, which was occupied by Tobias Myers on Monday. Myers allowed seven earned runs in 1⅓ innings in a 12-0 loss. The Mets could use a positive result form one of their back-end starters to try and garner some momentum. England beat Ireland but Sciver-Brunt in injury scare
Women's T20 World Cup, Group 2, Southampton Ireland 118-9 (20 overs): Prendergast 26(18), Little 26* (15);Ecclestone 3-22,Dean 2-11, Gibson 2-10England 119-6 (17.3 overs): Sciver-Brunt 48 (38); Prendergast 2-17England won by four wickets Scorecard. Tables.A major injury scare around captain Nat Sciver-Brunt overshadowed England's four-wicket victory over Ireland at the T20 World Cup in Southampton. With nine runs needed, Sciver-Brunt, who has only just returned from a calf injury, retired on 48 and walked straight to the dressing room.England later said she had suffered "tightness" in her left calf - the same leg as the recent injury - and left the field as a precaution. After Sciver-Brunt left the field, England also lost Freya Kemp for two before edging home in pursuit of 119 with 15 balls to spare. But, while the hosts now have two wins from two at begin their home World Cup, they now have a significant worry about the fitness of their captain. She had previously appeared untroubled in putting on 64 with Heather Knight after Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Amy Jones and Alice Capsey fell in the space of 10 balls.Earlier, Sophie Ecclestone took three wickets and Dani Gibson and Charlie Dean two apiece, as England dominated much of Ireland's innings of 118-9.England have four days until their next match - a meeting with Scotland at Headingley.Ireland, who have lost two from two, stay in Southampton to play winless New Zealand on Friday.Sciver-Brunt gives England major cause for concern From what looked like a routine win, to an issue that could have major implications for England's quest to win a first World Cup since 2017.England beat New Zealand and India at the start of the summer while Sciver-Brunt was absent but she remains their best and most important player. Vice-captain Charlie Dean had not led the side three months ago. There were no signs of any issue until she walked off, having just hit a four to square leg.Sciver-Brunt played the issue down but walking off two runs away from a fifty, with her side two hits from victory, is obviously a concern.England were 35-3 when their captain and Knight came together.Earlier openers Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Amy Jones, who made 16 and nine respectively, had sliced catches to the ring off spinner Amy Maguire and Alice Capsey bowled by an Orla Prendergast yorker for five.Sciver-Brunt's measured counter won the game for England but the state of her left calf could be far more significant. What else happened in Southampton?England's late wobble comes with the caveat of the confusion caused by Sciver-Brunt's retirement. England were solid for large parts of the remainder of the game.Faced with a low total, Wyatt-Hodge and Jones can face little criticism for continuing to attack. Their departures also gave others an opportunity. The only player who had a real off day was seamer Lauren Bell. She conceded a boundary with the first delivery of Ireland's innings and was hit for four fours by Louise Little in a final over that cost 17 and boosted Ireland's score. In between, Ireland were unable to counter as England mixed spin with seam through the middle.Dean bowled accurately and found turn to induce false shots with 36% of her deliveries. Ecclestone mixed her pace to have Rebecca Stokell stumped with a quicker ball and Arlene Kelly and Cara Murray gave looping catches for figures of 3-22 and Gibson, who took 2-10 in two overs, had Ireland's best batter Prendergast bowled via an inside edge for 25.Ireland have now lost 19 T20 World Cup matches from 19, but this performance was more encouraging than Saturday's defeat by Scotland. They were good with the ball - Prendergast, who dismissed Knight lbw for 26, again impressive - but did not have enough runs to defend.Notifications, social media and more with BBC Sport

'Very very important': India's spin coach reveals how Rohit Sharma remains crucial to Shubman Gill
NEW DELHI: Ahead of the second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow, India's spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule backed Rohit Sharma amid renewed discussions over the veteran opener's future. The 39-year-old has endured a dip in form recently and concerns have resurfaced because of his age, a recent hamstring injury and modest IPL returns. Rohit managed only 16 runs in the first ODI against Afghanistan after being run out.Despite the scrutiny, Bahutule stressed that Rohit's experience and leadership continue to be vital for the team, especially with Shubman Gill now leading the ODI side."I think Rohit is definitely an experienced player. He's a champion cricketer. I think he is somebody who adds value to this team with his experience, not only batting-wise, but his leadership qualities also rub off on all the boys, with Shubman also. So I think him being on the side is definitely very, very important, and he's somebody who understands each game, who understands what is expected from him and from the team," Sairaj told reporters. "I think he is just looking forward to every match and all the work he is putting in is like he has just started playing."Praise for KL RahulBahutule also lauded KL Rahul, who has been in excellent form across formats. After scoring a century in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, Rahul made an unbeaten 39 off 19 balls in the rain-shortened first ODI."I think he is a fabulous player. I think he is somebody who adapts to conditions really quickly and the formats as he has proven in these two games," he said."I just feel that you send him at any number, he is somebody who will perform for you, understands the situation, understands what is needed for him at that particular moment, adapts to the conditions and delivers. So I think wherever he decides to bat or wherever he is given that opportunity, he will be an important member of the team."

Floyd Mayweather faces felony charges in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boxer Floyd Mayweather faces two felony charges in Las Vegas over allegations that he wrote a bad check to purchase a watch from a luxury resale store.Mayweather was scheduled for an initial appearance Monday in Las Vegas Justice Court. He was not physically present for the hearing, but an attorney represented him on his behalf, according to the Clark County District Attorney's office. His case is scheduled for a hearing in September.Mayweather, 49, was charged in April with theft as well as drawing and passing a check without sufficient funds with the intent to defraud, according to court records. Prosecutors in Clark County allege that in December 2024, Mayweather wrote a $200,000 check through Wells Fargo Bank to Las Vegas designer resale store Gold and Beyond, despite having insufficient funds in his account, according to the criminal complaint. Mayweather's attorney and representatives did not immediately return requests for comment. The felony charges come as Mayweather faces other legal battles. He was sued in New York over his alleged failure to pay rent at a Manhattan apartment earlier this year, and he was in financial disputes with multiple jewelers. He also filed a lawsuit in New York against his former business manager, alleging a yearslong fraud scheme. Mayweather, the former five-division world champion, announced earlier this year that he was coming out of retirement and returning to competitive boxing this summer. Mayweather was scheduled to be in Athens, Greece, for the “Battle of the Legends” boxing match on June 27, according to an earlier press release. In April, Mayweather confirmed he would be at a match in Athens.

Nia Coffey is the latest newcomer thriving with the Lynx under Cheryl Reeve
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nia Coffey has changed teams five times in a 10-year WNBA career. Landing with the Minnesota Lynx was a fitting reward for the journey. The 31-year-old forward is from the Twin Cities area, so it's not quite right to declare she's found a home. The combination of returning to her native state and joining the powerhouse Lynx, however, has created an ideal scenario for Coffey, who entered the league in 2017 as the fifth overall pick in the draft out of Northwestern.“It feels good. I always loved how the Lynx played. It just felt weird because I was always on other teams,” Coffey said after Minnesota's 107-74 victory over Portland on Monday. “I’m glad it was a possibility for me to be on this team. I love the way we play. I love our coaching staff and our players. It’s great. So I’m glad it worked out.”With 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks, Coffey became just the fifth different player in franchise history to hit those minimums in a game as the Lynx set a team record with seven players in double-digit scoring on the way to their fourth 100-point output in 14 games this season. Coffey, who had the crowd at Target Center roaring with three first-quarter 3-pointers and a layup off an inbound pass to beat the halftime buzzer, was awarded the game ball from coach Cheryl Reeve and her staff afterward.“Her level of compete, her ability to play so vertically, shot-blocking, rebounding — she gives you all that energy and sets the tone for us,” Reeve said. “She’s such a big part of our defensive identity and our toughness, and then shooting the 3 as we’ve asked for. Happy for her. We do ask a lot from her at both ends.”Reeve also spoke of her fondness for Coffey's coachability.“There are so many things. I think what I appreciate about her — probably because I don’t get it from the rest of the starters — is she listens," Reeve said. “She really looks at you dead in your eye and receives the information and goes out there and does exactly what you’re asking her to do.”Coffey laughed when told of her coach's positive assessment of her listening skills.“I like to do a good job, so you kind of have to know what they’re asking for,” she said.Coffey's father, Richard, was a paratrooper in the Army who starred in college at Minnesota and played briefly in the NBA. Her younger brother, Amir, has played the last seven seasons in the league, most recently with Phoenix. She played at Hopkins High School, the powerhouse program in suburban Minneapolis that later produced Paige Bueckers, the first overall pick in the 2025 draft. For whatever the reasons, Coffey's WNBA career never truly took off. Much more of a role player than a key contributor prior to signing with the Lynx, Coffey has only one prior season of averaging more than seven points per game. This season, she's got career-best averages going in just about every category — minutes (26.4), points (8.7), rebounds (5.9) and assists (2.1) per game and field goal (50%) and 3-point (43.9%) shooting. With star Napheesa Collier yet to play following ankle surgery, Coffey has started every game for the league-leading Lynx (11-3).After losing several key players to free agency and the expansion draft, Reeve needed to restock the rotation — and Coffey was an ideal get.“She’s a great coach and I’ve always known that from afar, so the fact that I can see it first-hand is really cool,” Coffey said. “I'm still learning a lot.” ___AP WNBA: https://apnews.com/hub/WNBA-basketball

Antwan McCoy commits to Georgia, gives Bulldogs another big win on the defensive line
Kirby Smart and Georgia continue to stockpile talent in the trenches. This time, the Bulldogs landed a commitment from Antwan McKoy, the powerful defensive lineman from St. Pauls (N.C.) who chose Georgia after taking official visits to both Athens and South Carolina. The 6-foot-2.5, 310-pound interior defender had no shortage of options throughout his recruitment. South Carolina made a strong push down the stretch, while Miami and NC State also spent considerable time in the mix. In the end, though, Georgia’s relationships, culture and defensive line tradition proved too much to overcome.“Coach Scott is a great coach who puts defensive linemen out every year,” McKoy told Rivals. “He is a great teacher and I like how he coaches his defensive linemen. “Coach Smart is a great coach too. He is a winner, he has Georgia competing for championships and I know he has the program playing at a high level.”McCoy had visited Athens multiple times before making his decision, and each trip reinforced why the Bulldogs had become one of his top choices. The intensity inside the program stood out.“The culture, the coaching and just seeing guys show up ready to work all stood out [at Georgia],” he said. “I loved the energy of the coaching staff and how the team plays together.”Georgia’s championship standard and the expectation that every practice is a battle helped separate the Bulldogs from the rest of the field, giving McCoy confidence that Athens was the best place to develop his game.Scott made McCoy a priority throughout the recruiting process, that connection ultimately played a significant role in the decision.“Coach Scott treated me like family,” McKoy added. McKoy is commitment No. 17 for the Bulldogs.

UFC star Conor McGregor responds to report of alleged PED use
Conor McGregor has issued a response to a recent report that alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs in a partial allowance from the UFC.The biggest draw in the sport's history, McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) was accused of taking prohibited substances during a two-year period of his recovery from a nasty leg break he sustained during a 2021 UFC bout. The New York Times reported last week that McGregor's alleged PED use was in part aided by the UFC, as the promotion permitted the Irishman to withdraw from their then drug testing partner, United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). NYT said this situation caused a rift between the UFC and USADA, and it eventually led to the end of their relationship starting in 2024."Shocking. Shocking," McGregor said Tuesday on The Ariel Helwani Show. "A man's private medical (information): the most devastating injury that you could see in combat sports. The whole thing is strange to me. You have an injury like that, you're not going to walk again. The objective should be to get that athlete, that fighter, who's given his life, his limb, his livelihood for the entertainment of the people and the profit of the company, it should be to get this man back on his feet, and that was not the case. Not with the UFC, but the former body (USADA) that was there prior – and I find that strange, and I find that wrong. All I cared about was... I'm airlifted out of this f*cking arena with my leg hanging off, 'How am I going to walk again?' A bar, 'Do this, does that, do it.' That's it. That was that. The fact that five years after the fact, I just find it strange, to be honest. I feel the game has changed to accommodate a situation like that."McGregor was surprised by the report. He didn't confirm or deny taking banned drugs, but added that USADA wasn't accommodating to the gravity of his situation. He said he only followed medical guidance exclusively to recover from his gruesome injury."If a doctor is prescribing certain things and medications and stuff like that, otherwise you're not going to walk again, There's like a 20 percent chance that leg doesn't join together," McGregor said. "It's called nonunion when the bone doesn't join, and you're left on a wobble forever. That's what's at stake here? F*ck this fighting game. Are you crazy? I have children to raise and play with. I was a bit shocked that was the case. So whatever, I took myself out of the pool and listened to my doctors. I didn't even ask questions. If you're going to ask what was it, I don't even know. I don't want to know. All I want to know is what's going to get me back on my f*cking feet to be able to play with my children in a normal capacity again. That was it."In late 2023, USADA CEO Travis Tygart announced that his company would in 2024 no longer continue running the anti-doping program for the UFC and that McGregor had re-entered the testing pool. In an unprecedented move, McGregor had withdrawn from the testing pool, yet, he was still a UFC fighter and had not officially retired – the only two conditions that would remove a UFC athlete from the USADA testing pool at the time. The USADA-UFC relationship didn't seem to end in great terms. Tygart said in his statement that USADA had been "clear and firm" with UFC in not allowing McGregor back into competition unless he had negative drug test results and had been in the USADA testing pool for at least six months. He also said with their partnership coming to an end that USADA did not know if the UFC would "ultimately honor" that guideline.Months after the announcement, in December 2024, the UFC announced a new partnership with Drug Free Sport International, who currently oversees their anti-doping program. Under that program, McGregor has been tested 19 times, more than any other athlete on the roster. The UFC also posted an official statement regarding New York Times' investigation:In 2021, Conor McGregor sustained a potentially career-ending injury and sought medical guidance from leading orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who advised the appropriate recovery and rehabilitation protocol. As a result, McGregor did not compete for five years and maintained proper communication with our team throughout, remaining in full compliance with the rules of our comprehensive drug program.McGregor has been tested 19 times over the past two years, including 12 times in 2026, making him the most tested athlete during this time.Any suggestion that UFC's decision to end its partnership with USADA was related to Conor McGregor is categorically false. Internal communications and documentation clearly show that discussions regarding a transition away from USADA began months before any conversations involving McGregor. This narrative is a continued attempt by USADA leadership to misrepresent the facts surrounding UFC's unilateral decision to terminate our agreement with them and instead choose to partner with a far more competent, organized, and sophisticated testing group comprised of Drug Free Sport, Combat Sports Anti-Doping, and SMRTL laboratories.McGregor, 37, will compete this summer in his first fight since his 2021 leg break. Knicks' Walt Frazier honors Yonkers Montessori team at Stew Leonard's
Walt "Clyde" Frazier, who powered the New York Knicks to two 1970s NBA championships, was at Stew Leonard's Yonkers grocery store Tuesday, June 16, to help honor a basketball team that did something not achieved in decades. The Knicks legend was part of the celebration for Yonkers Montessori Academy's girls team, which became the first Yonkers school basketball team to win a state championship since the Yonkers High School boys team did it in 1932. That's 94 years. For the Knicks, their wait for another title clocked in at 53 years, winning the 2026 NBA title last week (Frazier, who was part of the 1970- and 1973-winning Knicks, was on hand Saturday, June 13, to celebrate the Knicks' return to the pinnacle as well).Read more: Yonkers Montessori rallies in OT for 1st girls basketball state titleYonkers Montessori Academy players and coaches received championship medals at the store Tuesday and the store made special blue and white ice cream, which matches the team’s championship colors.“Getting to meet Walt Frazier, and having him know about our team, was insane," said Arsela Mustafaj, Yonkers Montessori senior. "The girls were joking during the (NBA) finals like, ‘Yonkers hadn’t won a title in forever and neither have the Knicks. They’re gonna win because we did.’ For them to actually win it all, and then for us to get to meet a Knicks legend, I can’t wrap my mind around it. It’s been a great year.”Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, schools Superintendent Aníbal Soler Jr., and others were among those at Stew Leonard's for the celebration.Members of the YMA team went up to get their medals from Frazier.'No 'I' in team'Frazier told the YMA team that they "know about teamwork — you're champions. There's no 'I' in team. If you ever heard about the team I played on, a guy named Willis Read, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, Earl 'the Pearl' [Monroe] —we personified team. And that's why we were champions."In March, the YMA girls were greeted by a police escort as their team bus got back to Westchester County from upstate Troy."It’s amazing," Elie Moise, YMA girls basketball coach, told the Journal News/lohud.com Tuesday before the Stew Leonard's event. "From the second we stepped off the bus in Yonkers, it’s been nothing but congratulations. We’ve gotten kudos from all over, been recognized by some incredible people, and it’s made all of us feel special. We feel blessed and honored, and we’re grateful for all of it.”As for meeting Frazier, Moise said: “I’m a big Knicks fan, so I’m already on Cloud 9, and this is awesome. Meeting a Knicks legend after the Knicks championship makes this all the more meaningful.”Sweet victory: Stew Leonard's debuts New York Knicks-themed ice cream cones and coffeeMustafaj, the Yonkers Montessori senior, said that "most athletes never get to experience this, especially in Yonkers. A girls team from here had never done it before. I’m so thankful to have the teammates and coaches we did, and get to experience all of this with them.”Since their season ended, Mustafaj said, "We’ve had a lot of appearances and heard from so many people, and now even an event at Stew Leonard’s. It’s been a lot, but I’m so grateful to be a part of it."Besides its Yonkers location, Stew Leonard's has stores in Connecticut, on Long Island and in New Jersey.Contributing: Peter CarrThis article originally appeared on Rockland/Westchester Journal News: Knicks icon Walt Frazier honors Yonkers hoops team at Stew Leonard's

QB Brendan Sorsby seeks entry into NFL supplemental draft
The Brendan Sorsby story is taking another turn. After being granted an injunction that would make him eligible for the 2026 college football season and able to play, the Texas Tech quarterback is now planning on entering the NFL. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, he is applying to be part of the NFL supplemental draft. Sorsby, who played two seasons for Indiana and then was the starting quarterback the last two seasons for Cincinnati, admitted to a gambling problem in which he placed tens of thousands of dollars of bets on college football and the teams for which he played. He transferred to Texas Tech, entered into a treatment program in Arizona and then was ruled ineligible to play by the NCAA. Sorsby went to court and was granted an injunction to restore his eligibility while the case played out. However, the NCCA filed suit to have a stay of the injunction. Per Thamel, Sorsby plans on withdrawing his suit, which would make him ineligible again. So instead of fighting to play another season in college, he now is turning his sights on an NFL career. He was expected to be a top quarterback prospect in the 2027 draft. The supplemental draft has been around for decades and exists when otherwise draft-eligible players lose eligibility for the coming college season. The league must approve his entry into the supplemental draft, and if so, teams place a sort of draft pick claim like with waivers. The highest pick using the same order as the 2026 draft is used to know who is awarded the player. Sorsby will hold a pro day for teams to watch on July 10. We will see if he is someone the Arizona Cardinals will be interested in. Michael Olise elevates Kylian Mbappe to new heights in frightening World Cup performance
Kylian Mbappe had just pulled level with Olivier Giroud as France’s all-time top scorer, but the glint in his eye revealed far more than the impressive finish. The French superstar whipped his head back towards a gleeful Michael Olise, grinning after the through ball that had just sliced Senegal open and banished a testing start to the World Cup 2026 for Les Bleus. It sent France on their way to a 3-1 victory, an imperfect performance but one that has confirmed perhaps the deadliest combination world football right now. Indeed, it took a rousing second-half performance to confirm a winning start for Didier Deschamps’ side, and it stemmed from Olise’s appetite to control the game and change the pace at will. A moment before breaking the deadlock, Olise had drifted to the right, exchanged passes with Jules Kounde and assessed the French options buzzing around the Senegalese area. The Bayern Munich star placed a magnificent pass into a channel for Mbappe to surge onto. Merely redirecting the ball, without adding any more power, Mbappe beat a sprawling Edouard Mendy to send Les Bleus on their way.The noise has rightfully swirled around Mbappe in the build-up to this tournament; an opportunity for the 27-year-old to forget a turbulent season at Real Madrid and complete a meteoric rise as arguably the greatest World Cup player ahead of Pele already, should he in fact win two titles and feature across three consecutive finals. And his brace in this 3-1 victory in New York only underlines that trajectory.A second, thumping finish from range moved him past Giroud as France’s top goalscorer (58) and ahead of Just Fontaine (13) for most World Cup goals by a Frenchman, with Miroslav Klose’s record (16) likely to go in the coming weeks. But despite a wealth of experience in Deschamps’ ranks, as Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue completed France’s Fab Four, while Bradley Barcola, who struck France’s second, the former Crystal Palace forward stands tall on football’s grandest stage. Mbappe’s partner in crime, the duo could resemble Romario and Bebeto’s combination that inspired Brazil’s triumph at USA 1994, though France have absurd depth and more options than that Selecao. A teammate willing to harness Mbappe’s express pace, Olise married vision and the most exquisite weight of pass to take over this Group I game and claim the Player of the Match award in the process.France's Kylian Mbappe celebrates scoring their third goal with Dayot Upamecano, Bradley Barcola, Adrien Rabiot, Michael Olise and teammates (Reuters)In fact, Olise’s World Cup debut started by demonstrating his peculiar movement as one of the most creative forces in the final third, occupying the space between Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba and gazing upfield at this colossal MetLife Stadium.“It's what he [Michael Olise] does off the ball, he’s a dream for a manager,” Thierry Henry, his coach with the French Olympic team, said. “He doesn't play the game, he thinks about the game, you can play him in a lot of positions. You don't have to change your team to adapt to him, he will fit in. Of course he does [have the potential to be the best in the world]."Mbappe had shrugged off a scrappy first half that included several clunky touches, with France producing an all-time low of one first half shot in a World Cup group stage match since 1966, according to Opta. But it was Olise who provided the spark. Michael Olise #11 of France chases after a loose ball (Getty)It started with a powerful run after the restart, drifting past Kalidou Koulibaly, only to see his shot blocked by Mendy’s sprawling leg. A moment later he brought back memories of Zinedine Zidane, attracting pressure in midfield before spinning in behind and laying on a majestic pass into the path of Mbappe. That potent combination was merely a step away from breaking the deadlock, but Senegal had been warned. How you stop Olise in this form will become a fundamental part of the tournament and just how far France go. His power and stature afford him the ability to deal with aggressive tactics from opponents, while Didier Deschamps’ liberal approach to his fab four’s positions enabled the opener, too. Should teams venture forward, then Olise can come alive and punish teams in transitions, yet this was an example of what can happen if you sit off and operate a deep block. His gluttony for production in the final third remains on a relentless pace, too, having produced 27 assists last season. And this decisive impact in a 3-1 victory for France further shows just how Olise can help take Mbappe to new heights.

No sign of nerves for Cooper Pratt as he makes his MLB debut for Brewers
If Cooper Pratt was truly nervous heading into his major league debut on Tueday night, June 16, he sure was putting up a good façade. The 21-year-old prospect was officially recalled from Class AAA Nashville and immediately placed in the starting lineup at shortstop as the Milwaukee Brewers opened a three-game interleague series against the Cleveland Guardians.Infielder Luis Rengifo was designated for assignment to clear space for Pratt on the 26-man roster."I'm excited, man," Pratt told a gathering of reporters in American Family Field's media auditorium, answering questions with the ease of a 10-year veteran in a 12-minute news conference. "I wasn't like expecting to sleep, but I slept fine. Probably some of the better sleep that I've had. Everyone's like, "Oh, did you sleep last night?"Like, 'Yeah, I slept pretty good, actually.'"Truth be told, Pratt knew this moment would be coming probably sooner than later ever since he signed an eight-year, $50 million contract extension in early April. His placement on the 40-man roster in the wake of that move, combined with the continued offensive struggles of incumbent shortstop Joey Ortiz, had been anticipated by most ever since Pratt put pen to paper. And indeed, Pratt is now the man, with manager Pat Murphy explaining Ortiz will remain in the mix at shortstop, second base and third base."The pieces fit easily," he said. "This is a kid we signed for long term in Cooper. We feel confident that he will be our shortstop in the future. He's going to play now. We're well aware of a guy making his first trip into big leagues, that could go many different ways. 'When are they ready? When is it a perfect time?'"Right now, in my opinion, it doesn't really matter. It matters that he gets comfortable in the big leagues, understands it, starts to make his adjustments he needs to make, and then we roll from there. Joey is a huge part of our organization and has been. We will never forget what he's done for us at shortstop, and can do at shortstop again. But he also can play third, he can play second."We've got to think of ways to get (Brice) Turang more breathers. (David) Hamilton can go play second. We've got a pretty good combination there. We can play Joey at third against lefties, we can play Hamilton against righties, we can give Pratt a rest and go Hamilton at short that we have a cadre of people that can play third."Pratt arrives on the scene having hit .241 with six home runs, 32 runs batted in and an OPS of .735 with 17 stolen bases in 58 games at Nashville, where he also forged a .991 fielding percentage in 479 ⅔ innings as the Sounds' primary shortstop.News of Pratt's impending callup broke on Sunday, June 14 when he was shown being congratulated by teammates in Nashville's dugout during the Sounds' game, and he had a day to settle in and let it marinate a little with the Brewers being off on Monday."It didn't really quite hit me until like later that night," said Pratt. "I was like, 'Dang, it's going to be a little bit different than Nashville. Nashville still gets a lot of fans, and I remember playing in the Futures Game, and there were a lot of fans there. I'm going to look around for a second and be like, 'Oh my gosh, this is pretty amazing,' but then it goes back to baseball."Once the once the game starts, everything kind of starts to slow down, and it's been like that with every level."Pratt's ascent has been a quick one; it's been just under three years since the Brewers drafted him in the sixth round out of Magnolia Heights in Senatobia, Mississippi, and eventually convinced him to forego a scholarship to Ole Miss for a well-over-slot sum of $1.35 million."I was thinking about it," said Pratt. "Like, I was in high school three years ago."In a total of 286 minor-league games since then Pratt forged a .256 average and .733 OPS while rating out as a plus defender. His swing decisions have improved and his power continues to develop (22 total homers to date) with his 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame making him one of the bigger shortstops physically in the majors. The sum of his talents made him a fast riser on prospect lists as well; Pratt was ranked as the Brewers' No. 2 minor-leaguer in December by the Journal Sentinel."Really confident he can play defense," said Murphy. "It might take him a week or two to get adjusted, but I think we're very confident in what he can do. It's baseball IQ, just 'Give a crap,' and his competitiveness. I'm confident he can play. It might take a while, but we've got Joey right there, we've got Hamilton right there."We've got three guys that can play short pretty well, and we've got a number of guys that can play third. Yeah, I think we're strong when Cooper's at full strength and Cooper's doing his thing."Pratt, the first of two Brewers prospects to sign long-term extensions in the past two months – outfielder Luis Laradid so last week as well – admitted to pressing a bit in the aftermath of locking in his deal."I mean, at the beginning I was trying to do probably more than I should have," he said. "I was trying to get five hits every game. Obviously, I'm still trying to get five hits every game. That would be pretty fantastic. But no, it was a different kind of pressure."Once I finally started to play more games, it was like, 'Oh man, it's baseball. Who cares? I'm going to have bad games. I'm going to have good games.' And then, when I started to realize that, I started to see success, and I started to play better baseball and be more consistent."Pratt stepped into familiar environs when he arrived at the ballpark having been in major league camp each of the last two springs and also having played a couple exhibition games here in late March just prior to the Brewers' season opener. Now, he hops onto a train that's already well down the tracks with Milwaukee playing once again like one of the best teams in baseball and sitting in first place in the Central Division standings."I mean, you always want to play meaningful baseball," Pratt said. "Play in the playoffs, where every game is meaningful. You want to win a World Series, and this team's won the division three in a row. They know how to win, and I just want to be a small part of that in any way that I can."Murphy has known Pratt's family for many years – his uncle, Trent, played for Murphy at Arizona State and is currently head coach at BYU – and he feels more than comfortable with his new shortstop's competitiveness and reputation as a gamer.Even still, he delivered a strong message to Pratt in advance of his debut."I don't candy coat it. I'm not trying to look for a soft landing," said Murphy. "I said, 'Coop, if you're looking to take the pressure off, go someplace else, because there's pressure and there's standards here to play winning baseball. So, if you're not ready for that, this is going to be a lost cause."'I don't care about anything else. You've got to understand that. Then, offensively, you can't leave the zone. We don't leave the zone. So, if you're going to do that, you're going to find yourself back in Triple-A. You have to understand how we play the game, and the standards are high.'"Rengifo, meanwhile, departs Milwaukee having been a major disappointment after signing for $3.5 million early in spring training. He accounted for minus-4 Wins Above Replacement after hitting .205 with an OPS of .574. He failed to homer and drove in 19 runs in a total of 57 games as the primary third baseman. This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: No sign of nerves for Cooper Pratt as he makes his MLB debut for Brewers

World Cup what to know: Ronaldo looks to make history by scoring in 6th World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo looks to make history by becoming the first player to score a goal in six World Cups when Portugal meets Congo on Wednesday. The 41-year-old Ronaldo has scored in each tournament dating to 2006.His debut comes one day after Lionel Messi opened his sixth World Cup for Argentina.Messi had 13 goals on 105 shots entering this World Cup, and Ronaldo had eight goals on 103 shots. However, Ronaldo has scored in all five previous World Cup appearances, while Messi failed to find the net in 2010.“Well, I wish him the best — I hope that he scores but not against us," Congo coach Sébastien Desabre said.Ronaldo's focus has been on his team's success.“We go match by match, but not with the expectations of winning it all,” Ronaldo told reporters in Portugal last week before the team’s departure. “It has to be step by step. A good start is the most important thing,”Some Portugal supporters question whether the aging star will be a help or a detriment to the team. After scoring just once in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ronaldo was upset after he subbed off against South Korea and benched for the club's first knockout-stage match against Switzerland. He also failed to score in the 2024 European Championship — the first time that has happened at a major international tournament. But Ronaldo has also shown signs of his old productivity. He scored eight goals during Portugal’s 2025 UEFA Nations League title, including an equalizer in the final against Spain. Conor McGregor reveals plans for remainder of current UFC contract
Conor McGregor is set for his long-awaited return at UFC 329. | Getty/UFCConor McGregor apparently has a timeframe in place for his next two UFC bouts. McGregor is scheduled to return for the first time since July 2021 when he faces Max Holloway in a welterweight contest at UFC 329 on July 11. In an interview on "The Ariel Helwani Show," the former two-division champion revealed that he has two fights left on his current deal — and the date for his final bout is also tentatively in place. However, McGregor isn’t necessarily pleased by the potential layoff between those two bookings."Right now, I am contracted, and I have both dates," McGregor said."I have both dates for my fights. I have July 11 and I have – where would you think they would put me back in? When would you think they would put me back in? April 2027. It's almost a year later. That's ridiculous to me. No? This is the way the contract was done. I have my second date in April 2027.”A Different Type of Deal McGregor also discussed how he was able to come to terms for his Octagon return. Under his previous contract, the Dublin native received points as part of the UFC’s previous pay-per-view model. With the new media rights agreement with Paramount+, all UFC numbered events are available through a subscription fee on the streaming platform. That made the financial aspect of McGregor’s contract a little different than in the past. With that being said, the “Notorious” appears to have hope for another UFC contract once the current one is fulfilled. “I’m happy, to an extent,” McGregor said. “There’s a lot more there. I hope it’s with the UFC. I hope we come to something. I hope I get honored even more. I’m going to prove even more so what I’m about."We met in the middle. We got a juicy one. Was it what my worth is? Probably not. Was it what they wanted to offer? Definitely not. Definitely not. We met in the middle. I'm a fair operator. I love the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and I'd love to continue. Let's see how it goes."

Paul Skenes Makes Stance Clear On Looming CBA Negotiations
Paul Skenes Makes Stance Clear On Looming CBA Negotiations originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes is adamant the MLBPA won’t accept a salary cap as part of the looming CBA negotiations. The current CBA is set to expire on Dec. 1, and the owners are pushing for a salary cap while players are adamant the league doesn’t need one. Although Skenes is just in his third MLB season, he’s also an MLBPA executive subcommittee member and said the players are united about what they want.“We are very united. I don’t think people understand how united we are and how on the same page we are,” Skenes said to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “But if we give in to certain things, it would be a disservice to the players who came before us.”The biggest issue for both sides is a salary cap, and Skenes told the Post-Gazette he’s hopeful a deal will be struck and games won’t be missed. But he said the players are fine missing games.“There’s a line that we’re not going to cross, and if we have to miss games, we’ll miss games,” Skenes said. “I’m sure the owners feel the same way, so we’ll see. It’ll be interesting. There’s probably not a whole lot that’s going to happen until the time comes where we have to miss games. Yeah, we’ll do it if we need to.”When asked if the line is a salary cap, Skenes wouldn’t confirm. But the Pirates ace is clear that the MLBPA is in this together and united with what they want to come from the negotiations.More MLB: How Long Is Konnor Griffin Out? Congo coach says Ebola outbreak 'not an issue' for team's World Cup preparation
Editor's note: Follow all World Cup matches liveHOUSTON — As the Congolese national team prepares to play its first World Cup game in 52 years on Wednesday, June 17 against Portugal, the African nation's ongoing Ebola outbreak might affect fan support in the stands. The CDC issued travel restrictions to prevent the Ebola virus from entering the United States. While members of the Congo World Cup team were cleared to participate and permitted to fly to the U.S. after a mandatory isolation period, many of the country's fans were unable to travel to watch the tournament. "We were very sad, to be honest," Congo coach Sébastien Desabre said on Tuesday, June 16. "Some of our supporters, some of our fans who have been with us since day one – they’ve always been with us, always been supporting us, so we are sad that they cannot travel and come here to attend the games. We will try to send out the right mood and make sure they see us wherever they are and feel happy about us."Although the majority of Congo's national team players were playing soccer outside the country, the Ebola crisis did disrupt its pre-World Cup schedule. Last month, the Congo national team scrapped its plan to hold a three-day training camp in the Congolese capital city of Kinshasa. The team instead trained in Belgium, where Desabre said they had a "completely normal preparation phase." But after playing one warm-up friendly match against Denmark in Belgium, Congo was forced to relocate its second friendly match against Chile after local authorities in Spain canceled the match because of public health concerns over the Ebola crisis. The match took place without spectators in France. At the request of American authorities, the Congolese team quarantined for 21 days before it flew from Paris to Houston, where it set up its World Cup base camp."For the team, for the preparation internally, it was not impactful," Desabre said. "Now for our fans, of course, when you play outside of the country typically we are very much followed. It’s something we love to share with our fans. There were highs and lows throughout our time together, they were always with us, so for us of course something will be missing. But I trust the diaspora, I trust all of those that love Congo. They will be there to support us." On June 16, Desabre said all 26 players on Congo's roster are healthy and available to play against Portugal. After that, Congo will face Colombia in Guadalajara on June 23 and Uzbekistan in Atlanta on June 27.This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Congo coach says Ebola 'not an issue' for team's World Cup preparation

What should Sixers do with Dominick Barlow's team option for 2026-27?
The Philadelphia 76ers have hired their new leader of the basketball department with Mike Gansey taking over as the team's President of Basketball Operations. Gansey will take over for Daryl Morey who held the position for six seasons in Philadelphia.Gansey will have some decisions to make in the coming offseason with the draft approaching on June 23 and then free agency starting just a week after. The Sixers will have until June 29 to make decisions on players with team options. It's time to look at the players with team options and predict what the Sixers will do with those players.Up next in this series is Dominick Barlow, who played so well in 2025-26 that the Sixers converted him from a two-way to a 2-year deal. The second year of the deal is a $3.4 million team option, and after playing 71 games with 59 starts, one has to wonder what the Sixers will do with the 4-year big man from Overtime Elite.Barlow's raw numbers aren't all that impressive as he averaged only 7.7 points and 4.8 rebounds, but when considering most of his buckets were either off hustle plays or dump off passes in the paint, those numbers are solid. He understands how to play team basketball as he does whatever it takes to help win games. He continued to show off a willingness to shoot the corner 3-point shot, which can be a useful weapon in his toolbox as he moves forward in his career.Defensively, Barlow had a steal percentage of 1.9%, which is good for the 77th percentile per Cleaning the Glass. He was somebody coach Nick Nurse could turn to on the defensive end and have him guard multiple positions. He can guard on the perimeter off the switch in pick-and-roll and he's strong enough to defend big guys as well. He's a valuable and versatile player for this group.Every team needs a glue guy. That somebody who can just do whatever it takes to help win basketball games. That is what Barlow brings to the table for the Sixers. He isn't some elite scorer, but what he can do is the little things. He's a good screener, somebody who grabs big rebounds, and can make the little plays that don't show up in the box score. Philadelphia should exercise his team option and bring him back. This article originally appeared on Sixers Wire: What should Sixers do with Dominick Barlow's team option for 2026-27?

Penn State now in contention with Nebraska for Khalil Taylor
As far as Penn State are concerned, Khalil Taylor is their number one priority. However, due to the flip of Jamir Dean to Georgia and Campbell's recruiting struggles within Pennsylvania, landing his commitment is far from a foregone conclusion. Now, Nebraska could be back in the race for his signature with a late push. All signs pointed to clear roads ahead for the Nittany Lions, but Taylor may have other plans.According to several reports, Taylor had canceled all of his remaining official visits, including those with Nebraska and Alabama, to focus on his visit to Penn State. However, his trip to Lincoln will be back on for this weekend. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule is known for his aggressive approach in recruiting when it comes to the Northeast, but Pennsylvania has seemingly been his forte. Most importantly is that Rhule will want to be aggressive after missing out on yet another four star PA recruit in Matthew Gregory, and has ample resources to do so. Matt Campbell on the other hand, is just trying to stay afloat when it comes to in-state recruits. He only has one top 20 player from Pennsylvania within the current class and despite its overall outlook, it does not project as a satisfactory haul for some Penn State fans.Taylor remains one of the Nittany Lion's only hopes at making amends. They cannot afford to miss out on him, or else there will be early questions about Campbell's recruiting methods in Happy Valley. This article originally appeared on Nittany Lions Wire: Penn State now in contention with Nebraska for Khalil Taylor

World Cup 2026 ticket prices: Mexico, not USMNT, has the most expensive remaining group play games
We are five days into the World Cup and we’ve already seen plenty of interesting matches, plus successful openers for both the USMNT and Mexico. With every team in the field still having at least two matches to play, one country stands above the pack when it comes to remaining get-in ticket price: Mexico. Per Gametime, the co-hosts have the most expensive ($4,027 against South Korea) and fourth-most expensive tickets remaining in group play. The USMNT’s remaining games are seventh (against Australia) and ninth (against Türkiye). The full top 10:Mexico vs. South Korea (June 18, Guadalajara): $4,027Columbia vs. Portugal (June 27, Miami): $2,999Uruguay vs. Spain (June 26, Guadalajara): $2,905Mexico vs. Czechia (June 24, Mexico City): $2,703Scotland vs. Brazil (June 24, Miami): $2,581Argentina vs. Austria (June 22, Dallas): $2,267USA vs. Australia (June 19, Seattle): $2,195Jordan vs. Argentina (June 27, Dallas): $2,124USA vs. Türkiye (June 25, Los Angeles): $2,013Portugal vs. Uzbekistan (June 23, Houston): $1,877It’s probably worth noting that supply is a significant factor when it comes to those games in Guadalajara, as Estadio Akron has a smaller capacity than any of the stadiums in the U.S.As for the remaining co-host, Canada’s most expensive game is against Switzerland on June 24 in Vancover, with tickets starting at $891.The cheapest ticket left in the field: Czechia vs. South Africa at $374, in Atlanta on June 18.The USMNT opened its World Cup with a dominant 4-1 win over Paraguay in Los Angeles, though the health of star Christian Pulisic remains a question after missing the second half due to a calf injury.Mexico also excelled in its first game against South Africa, while Canada fought to a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Terry Bradshaw insists he has no plans to retire from Fox: ‘That would be their call, not mine’
Credit: Stephen Lew-Imagn ImagesAt 77 years old, having spent 31 consecutive seasons as the most identifiable face of Fox NFL Sunday and absorbed plenty of scrutiny over his increasingly visible decline on camera, Terry Bradshaw settled, at least for himself, whether he intends to retire before someone makes him.“Retirement is not something that… I mean, I may not be with Fox,” Bradshaw said during a recent appearance on Sports Business Radio. “That would be their call, not mine. But I would still be speaking, but if not doing that, I’ll still work the bourbon trail.”Fox has given no public indication that it shares Bradshaw’s appetite for staying the course indefinitely, even as the network has continued standing by him through a season marked by a conspicuous run of on-air stumbles, from seeming to forget that Jordan Love and Micah Parsons play for the same team to losing track of which game Fox’s NFC Championship halftime show was even discussing, to rambling tangents that leave his colleagues befuddled. Whatever those moments suggest about his sharpness on a TV set, Bradshaw showed none of it when he ran circles around Joe Rogan earlier this month, spending two and a half hours refusing to budge on Rogan’s insistence that ivermectin was an effective COVID treatment.Bradshaw has floated his own retirement before, as far back as February 2025, when he proclaimed he expected to be finished within four years, a timeline that has since proven elastic. This isn’t even the first instance of his prognosticating his own exit. The four-time Super Bowl champion hadn’t yet turned 60 in 2008 when he announced plans to retire by 2011. And three years ago, Bradshaw furthered the goal posts by claiming he would like to die on-air in hopes of boosting ratings as a sort of macabre parting gift for Fox.“Billy Graham said that the day that you retire is the day you start dying,” Bradshaw added. “I do believe a lot of people, when they stop using their brain and keep their thought processes moving and advancing, I do think, for whatever reason, I believe you age, and people end up dying. I mean, people die within a year after retirement. So I don’t want to do that. I see myself staying fully active right up to the end, whenever that is.”Whatever Fox eventually decides, Bradshaw has made clear he isn’t going to be the one to volunteer for retirement.“It’s never gonna happen,” Fox NFL Sunday host Curt Menefee told the Daily Mail in late 2025 when asked if Bradshaw might eventually step aside. “They’re going to be carrying him out in a hearse. He is not leaving the show.”The post Terry Bradshaw insists he has no plans to retire from Fox: ‘That would be their call, not mine’ appeared first on Awful Announcing.

Tony Vitello on Tennessee baseball, return to the South as Giants manager
ATLANTA — Tony Vitello is back in the South, this time as an MLB manager. The former Tennessee baseball coach is leading the San Francisco Giants against the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series from June 16-18 at Truist Park, the closest MLB ballpark to Knoxville. As the Giants took batting practice pregame, some fans filed in wearing Tennessee orange, asking Vitello for autographs and pictures.“There’s plenty of Georgia fans floating around here, but also there’s so many Tennessee alums and people that have a background related to Tennessee and cheer,” Vitello said on June 16. “We (Tennessee) did a game here where they invited us and it was actually celebrating Vols alumni and the fan base. There was a ton of people with orange in the crowd, which was interesting because it’s not the Braves’ colors. But it’s awesome. Excited to play.”Vitello is in his first season managing the Giants after leaving Tennessee in October, becoming the first MLB manager hired directly from a college program without any experience as a professional coach. In his eight years as the Vols’ head coach, he presided over the most successful stretch in program history, which included three College World Series appearances and a national championship in 2024.Josh Elander, one of Vitello’s top assistants, was promoted and recently finished his first season as head coach. It ended in the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA Tournament with a 38-22 record. Vitello said that he followed the team “a little bit” and was communicating with the coaches throughout the season.Vitello mentioned that he always wanted his Tennessee teams to play at Truist Park and was working to set it up before he left. Now he’ll manage the Giants there as they try to reverse a difficult start to the season, holding a 29-43 record. Many of the questions he answered on June 16 related to his team’s ability to turn things around. For now, navigating the grind of a 162-game season remains his focus. When it ends, though, he’ll have a chance to check back in on the Vols.“Want to get through this as best we can and hopefully win as many games as we can,” Vitello said. “But definitely will watch some SEC football this fall.”Emmett Siegel covers Tennessee baseball for Knox News. Kernels' Audrey Miller takes triple jump talents to Nike Outdoor Nationals
Jun. 16—MITCHELL — Audrey Miller didn't expect her final track and field season to extend well into mid-June.But, given the opportunity in front of the recently graduated Mitchell High School product, she's hardly complaining. This week, Miller is set to compete in the triple jump at the Nike Outdoor Nationals high school track and field championships, hosted June 18-22, at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, aka TrackTown USA.Yet, just a few weeks ago, competing at one of the premier national high school meets wasn't even on Miller's radar."I've always known about the Nike Outdoor Nationals because a lot of past South Dakotan athletes have gone and competed there," Miller said. "But competing in it myself, that just never really was a thought in my mind."Scrolling on TikTok the night before the final day of the South Dakota track and field championships, Miller came across a post about the Nike Outdoor Nationals. Out of curiosity, she visited the meet qualifying page and discovered she'd already met the provisional standard twice during the season.Using the per diem provided by the MHS Booster Club to Kernel track and field athletes at the state meet to cover the national meet application fee, Miller submitted her credentials. The next morning, as she boarded the bus to the state meet, Miller got a prompt reply. She'd been accepted to jump."I was really excited at first, but I was also like, 'Oh my gosh. What am I going to do? I didn't even tell my parents I was applying, so they're going to be so confused,'" Miller said. "I first told my friend on the bus, and then we told the track coaches. They all said I have to go, because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."To qualify for the Nike Outdoor Nationals, the girls triple jump provisional mark is 36 feet, 4 inches. Miller first achieved that distance on May 2 at the Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls, leaping 36 feet, 5.5 inches, to take fifth place at the regional meet. She later added a half-inch to her personal best with a mark of 36 feet, 6 inches, on May 21 at the Wendelgass Relays in Huron. For the season, Miller ranked as the No. 10 overall triple jumper in South Dakota based on her best leap, and she placed seventh at the Class AA state meet.Miller will jump in the Emerging Elite girls division, with the event set for the afternoon of Saturday, June 20."It's such an awesome opportunity for Audrey. She's put in a lot of time and work to be successful as a jumper," said MHS head track and field coach Deb Thill. "It's going to be a great experience for her to go and compete at that level, but just getting to watch the rest of the track meet will be an experience, too. It's also exciting for Coach (Tayah) Waldera and her jumpers that we've got someone going to a national meet."According to Thill, the last MHS girls track and field standout to compete at a national meet was high jumper Carly Haring, a 2019 graduate. Haring jumped at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina during the summer of 2018, between her junior and senior years of high school, and later went on to compete at the University of South Dakota. For Miller, she's viewing her opportunity to jump the national competition as something of a second chance, as she hopes to end her senior season and prep career on a high note."I came out of the state meet a little disappointed. I was very happy to be on the podium, but I knew I could jump further," Miller said. "I'm really glad I get to push myself a little more and have another opportunity to finish jumping at a super fun atmosphere, basically the track capital of the U.S."To prepare for the national meet, Miller has had to organize times to train with MHS jumps coach Tayah Waldera and strength and conditioning coach James Dougherty."Keeping my routine as normal as possible has helped me relax with the whole process," Miller said. "It gets a little lonely, I'm not going to lie. It's still fun, but it's different without having teammates to chat and joke around with, for sure. But my training has been good, and I feel like everything is lining up. I feel great."While many of Miller's peers and soon-to-be competitors at the national meet are angling to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, Miller has decided not to pursue a future in track and field. In the fall, Miller will begin attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with plans to major in biology following a pre-health track. As such, Miller's trip to Oregon will be the final act in what was a standout prep career, and that's a decision she's made peace with."I'm really happy, but it's honestly bittersweet, and I'm not too nervous, which is surprising," Miller said. "I'm kind of like, whatever happens, happens. I just have one more chance, and after that, I'm done; I'll never jump again. I'm just going to go see what I can do."

World Cup what to know: Ronaldo looks to make history by scoring in 6th World Cup
Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo runs drills during the men's national soccer team training session ahead of their FIFA World Cup soccer tournament Saturday, June 13, 2026, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (AP Photo/Marta Lavandier)2026-06-16T23:04:01Z Cristiano Ronaldo looks to make history by becoming the first player to score a goal in six World Cups when Portugal meets Congo on Wednesday. However, Ronaldo has scored in all five previous World Cup appearances, while Messi failed to find the net in 2010.“Well, I wish him the best — I hope that he scores but not against us,” Congo coach Sébastien Desabre said.Ronaldo’s focus has been on his team’s success.“We go match by match, but not with the expectations of winning it all,” Ronaldo told reporters in Portugal last week before the team’s departure. “It has to be step by step. A good start is the most important thing,” Some Portugal supporters question whether the aging star will be a help or a detriment to the team. After scoring just once in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ronaldo was upset after he subbed off against South Korea and benched for the club’s first knockout-stage match against Switzerland. He also failed to score in the 2024 European Championship — the first time that has happened at a major international tournament. But Ronaldo has also shown signs of his old productivity. He scored eight goals during Portugal’s 2025 UEFA Nations League title, including an equalizer in the final against Spain. And, he recently won his first Saudi Pro League title with Al-Nassr, scoring a club-high 28 goals.
