How good is Cristiano Ronaldo now? What to know about Portugal soccer legend's skills at age 41
How good is Cristiano Ronaldo now? What to know about Portugal soccer legend's skills at age 41 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Cristiano Ronaldo is making sixth World Cup appearance. Barring something unforeseen, this one will represent his final chance of hoisting the famous trophy above his head. The Portuguese supernova has danced atop pitches for more than 20 seasons, enjoying one of the most impressive runs in top-flight soccer in history. All good things come to an end, however, including his splendid career. After lackluster showings at the 2022 World Cup and 2024 European Championships, Ronaldo is hoping to leave his mark on the stage he coveted so desperately across his career.Casual audiences are privy to the fact that Ronaldo took his talents to Saudi Arabia in 2023. Just how has he performed since swapping sides? And what can audiences expect out of the aging wonder at the 2026 World Cup for Portugal? Here's what you need to know.2026 WORLD CUP HQ:Latest World Cup news | Full World Cup schedule | Buy World Cup ticketsHow old is Cristiano Ronaldo?Ronaldo is 41 years old. He turned 41 on Feb. 5. He is the second oldest player at this year's World Cup, only surpassed by Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon (43 years and 162 days). The Portuguese superstar is one of eight 40-years old set to take part in the midsummer spectacle. He's by far the most-decorated figure of that bunch — although players like Manuel Neuer, Luka Modric and Edin Dzeko have impressive resumes in their own right. Nevertheless, Father Time comes for all, including the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.MORE: A look at each World Cup hat trick in tournament historyIs Cristiano Ronaldo still good?Ronaldo still produces goals in bunches. He ranked third in the Saudi Pro League in scoring, recording 28 goals in the 2025-26 season. In his prior two seasons, he was the competition’s leading scorer, tallying 35 and 25 goals, respectively.Ronaldo also shined in Portuguese colors during World Cup qualifying, tallying a team-high five goals to lead Portugal to four wins in six.All of that is to say, Ronaldo is still a top-tier goal scorer. He’s not at the level he once was, though, offering little in the way of all-around play. At 41, Ronaldo is not the most adept at pressing or providing defensive support or structure. His days of being the creative fulcrum of his team are long over, having faded as the years have gone on. He’s a finisher — and a damned good one at that. But his waning physical attributes mean he’ll need his chances created for him.Portugal has a series of playmakers capable of doing just that — namely Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, PSG’s Vitinha, Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and AC Milan’s Rafael Leão. Still, Ronaldo’s game takes a far different disposition from the style of play that suited him 10–15 years ago.MORE: Where is Ronaldo ranked among World Cup goalscorers?Cristiano Ronaldo stats 2025-26Stats per 90 mins2025/26 (Al-Nassr)Goals0.97Shots5.57Shots on target2.08Shot conversion rate14.00%Cristiano Ronaldo role on Portugal's World Cup teamRonaldo will likely serve as Portugal's starting striker during the 2026 World Cup. He is certainly capable of finishing chances — his showcases at Al-Nassr and Portugal make that abundantly clear. However, his limitations out of possession mean Roberto Martinez's side will likely have to make concessions elsewhere. Expect the midfield to be combative, with Joao Neves and Joao Palhinha likely called to shore up fires in the middle third of the pitch.Furthermore, Ronaldo's waning pace suggests the team could attempt to whip crosses into his as opposed to playing him in from behind — a strength of his game in the past. Fernandes and Vitinha are some of the best passers in world soccer, well-equipped at finding their targets in the eye of storm. Ronaldo will need all the help he can get if he hopes to get on the scoresheet during Portugal's World Cup run.MORE: Why Cristiano Ronaldo's best chance of winning World Cup with Portugal is as a back-upWho's better, Messi or Ronaldo now?Ronaldo's gaudy numbers could suggest that he's a more productive player than Messi at this stage in his career. That assessment would be wrong, however. Messi is quite comfortably the MLS' best player in the twilight of his career, a goals-and-assists maven who has recorded at least double-digits in each stat category every full season since he arrived in Vice City. Saudi Arabia's Pro League has made strides in recent years. But it doesn't offer quite the same competition as is present in MLS, spattering of marquee signings be damned.Furthermore, Messi just became the oldest player to record a World Cup hat trick. It seems unlikely that Ronaldo — who contributed just one goal and zero assists in five World Cup matches in 2022 — will reach the same accolade. We'll give this advantage to Messi. Is Cristiano Ronaldo the greatest of all time?Ronaldo's goal-scoring plaudits are undeniable. He is arguably the finest goal-scorer in soccer history, pairing impressive ball-striking with dancing feet to collect nearly 1,000 career goals across his professional career. That's not quite enough for him to claim the title of soccer's greatest-ever player, however. Ronaldo was a strong playmaker during his prime. He wasn't Messi, though, who mixed effortless dribbling and an all-seeing passing eye with splendid scoring chops to become the sport's grandest talent. Messi isn't able to equal Ronaldo in terms of goal-scoring — although he comes close. But his passing gifts give him the edge over the hulking striker, at least in the minds of most. The Messi show: Football great equals record for most World Cup goals
Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick in Argentina's 3-0 win against Algeria to equal Miroslav Klose's record of most World Cup goals, reaching a tally of 16.At the age of 38, Messi had already made history as he became the first player to make six World Cup appearances. But the football legend went even further and had a sparkling performance in title holders Argentina's tournament opener on Tuesday."As a child, I could never have imagined all the things I would experience. All of this is a bonus. I've achieved everything and more, and I'm enjoying it," Messi said."This wonderful team and the feeling of being completely in my element on the field again, just as I've always loved."Messi found the net in the 17th and in the 60th minutes before scoring the record-equalling goal in the 76th. He benefited from a great build-up and polished it off with a superb left-footed strike."I don't have the words to describe Messi. For 20 years, he's had us used to seeing things like this, and he inspires everyone who watches him play," Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said.Messi and Klose are tied for the all-time record of 16 goals. Former Brazil striker Ronaldo comes in second with 15.Earlier, Kylian Mbappé scored two goals in France's 3-1 win over Senegal to take his World Cup tally to 14.The Messi showThe game had some intense first minutes, with Messi having a goal ruled out for offside in the fifth minute. Three minutes later, Fares Chaibi thought he had given the lead to Algeria but his effort was also disallowed. From then on, it was Messi's show and he eventually got his first in the 17th - and what a stunner that was.The number 10 collected the ball in midfield, surged towards the area and unleashed a dazzling left-footed strike to beat goalkeeper Luca Zidane. The son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane denied Alexis Mac Allister on the hour mark - only for Messi to clean up the rebound and sweep home his 15th World Cup goal.Mesis's big moment came in the 76th, as he collected Nicolas Gonzalez's pass and fired a low effort into the bottom corner.Expectations whether he could score a fourth goal and take sole possession of the record were quickly dropped as Messi was subbed off in the 80th."There are no words left to describe him. If anyone thought this team was better without Leo, today it became clear that he is the most important player of all, and we need to put together a team in which he feels comfortable, because he is the most important player of all," Mac Allister said.World champions Argentina's top Group J standings with three points ahead of Austria v Jordan later on Tuesday."We're going to take it one game at a time. The team is happy, we gave playing time to a lot of players. Hopefully we can win the next one so everyone can be in the third group stage match," Scaloni said.It was Messi's 200th appearance for the national team, with which he won the World Cup title in Qatar four years ago.Cristiano Ronaldo can soon join Messi as a player with six World Cup appearances if he plays for Portugal against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday.Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has also travelled for his sixth World Cup but was only on the bench during his team's 2-0 win over South Africa last week.Messi made his World Cup debut at the age of 17 in 2006 in Germany during Argentina's 6-0 win against Serbia and Montenegro, a match in which he scored a goal.

Red Sox proven right by trading Rafael Devers after trade deadline update
Red Sox proven right by trading Rafael Devers after trade deadline update originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. When the Boston Red Sox moved on from Rafael Devers, it seemed to be one of the worst moves the franchise has ever made. While the most recent bad move the Red Sox made prior to that was moving on from Mookie Betts, this was right up there. Nobody agreed with the decision to move Devers, though fast forward to a year now, and it doesn't seem to be as bad a decision as it once was. The only problem is that the Red Sox didn't move on from Devers because they didn't think he was going to be a good player anymore, but because they didn't know what to do with him and Alex Bregman at third base.Interestingly enough, the Red Sox are actually being proven right about that decision, with reports now indicating that the San Francisco Giants are very willing to move on from Devers in a trade at the deadline.“The most obvious players for the Giants to move would be two of their potential free agents, second baseman Luis Arraez and left-hander Robbie Ray. It’s doubtful they could swing quality deals for expensive and underperforming veterans such as first baseman Rafael Devers and shortstop Willy Adames. The team has zero plans to part with ace right-hander Logan Webb, one source said,” Ken Rosenthal wrote. It's crazy to see how poorly Devers has played this year, especially after what we saw him do in Boston for most of his career. Devers has never been a great defender, but he can really swing it, so to see him struggle on the offensive side of things really doesn't make a whole lot of sense.More MLB news:Blue Jays were geniuses for letting Bo Bichette walkMets get reality check after Bo Bichette contract reportPhillies trade rumors for 32 home run slugger continue to heat up after injury newsPhillies make Andrew Painter decision that most fans will never agree withMets’ Freddy Peralta being traded to this team makes sense

Iran star may miss next two World Cup games over terrible US visa fiasco after World Cup opener
Photo by Harry How/Getty ImagesIran’s chaotic World Cup campaign has hit another snag, with winger Mehdi Torabi caught up in a visa issue following the opener against New Zealand. The problem adds to a growing list of frustrations for Iran, who drew 2-2 with New Zealand and are already dealing with travel and recovery issues linked to their base across the border in Tijuana. With matches against Belgium and Egypt looming, even a single paperwork error can have significant consequences.Torabi’s situation is especially unusual because it involves a different visa arrangement from the rest of the squad.Photo by Richard Heathcote – FIFA/FIFA via Getty ImagesMehdi Torabi’s visa issue leaves Iran facing World Cup travel headacheAccording to James Ducker on X, Torabi’s US visa expired after he entered the country for the opening match.“It gets worse for Iran. Winger Mehdi Torabi’s visa to the US expired following his entry to the country on Sunday ahead of the New Zealand game,” Ducker said.He added, “While multiple entry visas were issued for the Iran players to travel to the US, Torabi’s visa was valid for only one entry.”This poses a clear problem, as Iran are based in Tijuana, Mexico, but need to travel into the US for matches. A single-entry visa becomes invalid once used, leaving Torabi unable to re-enter the country without new clearance.Although Torabi, who plays for Tractor, did not feature against New Zealand, his situation has quickly become part of a bigger story around Iran’s World Cup logistics.Iran work to resolve Mehdi Torabi’s visa before Belgium and Egypt fixturesDucker also reported that the issue could force Torabi to miss Iran’s next two group matches.“It means the Tractor winger will be unavailable for Iran’s next two group games against Belgium and Egypt and will have to remain behind at the team’s camp in Tijuana, unless he obtains a new visa,” he continued.“A spokesperson for the Iranian Football Federation said action had been ‘to obtain a new visa for Torabi so that he can continue to accompany the national team in its upcoming matches,’” Ducker concluded. That statement is important because the story has moved quickly. Later reports indicated Iran had secured a new multi-entry visa for Torabi, clearing him to rejoin the squad for upcoming fixtures.Even with the issue apparently resolved, the incident highlights the challenges Iran face. Cross-border travel, tight schedules and visa complications have all contributed to a difficult start, and Torabi’s case shows how quickly things can unravel.Read more:‘I know what you’re going through’ – watch the moment FIFA president addresses Iran World Cup team in locker room‘This is madness’ – Iran World Cup coaches watch from hotel in Tijuana after being denied US visasFIFA president Gianni Infantino’s promise to Iran players in locker room after World Cup opener

Call for statue of England's 'forgotten' captain
Jack Hunter made his debut for England against Scotland in 1878 [Hulton Archive/Getty Images]Campaigners are calling for a statue to celebrate the life of a Victorian footballer who became one of England's first ever captains.John Hunter was born in Sheffield in 1851 and went on to make seven appearances for England between 1878 and 1882, including leading the team out against Wales in 1881.According to the Football Association, Hunter, who was more commonly known as Jack, was the tenth man to captain England, and is regarded by some as England's "first working class captain".Now, Sheffield Home of Football - who recently installed a plaque in the city in honour of Hunter - say they would like a statue to commemorate his role in the game.At the time Hunter broke into the England set-up the team was almost entirely made up of players from the upper classes and public schools.Hunter, who worked as a cutler and a butcher during his footballing career, was among the first working class players andFootball historian Graham Curry, who has a PhD in the early development of association football, said: "Jack Hunter was the first working class captain of the England football team."To be captain of people with the real social power, from Eton, from Harrow, the southern amateurs, it was just incredible."The only thing that can I think is, he must have been a great player."Hunter was recently recognised with a blue plaque on the street where he was born [BBC / Mia Fitzpatrick]Hunter made his England debut against Scotland in 1878, losing 7-2 in Glasgow. He went on to play six more matches for England, winning just once, and captained the side in a 1-0 loss to Wales on 26 February 1881 at Alexandra Meadows in Blackburn."If you look at the results against England, some of them are quite embarrassing, so Hunter was surviving on an international stage when England were not brilliant," said Steve Wood, historian and trustee of Sheffield Home of Football.Despite his lack of international success, Wood still thinks Hunter should be celebrated."We put on the plaque, he's the first working class captain of England," he said."When you consider the game, the international side was dominated by players from the upper class. It was a fantastic achievement for a working class player to break through into the England side."While Hunter's international achievements were limited to a handful of games, he enjoyed success at a domestic level, winning the FA Cup in 1883 with Blackburn Olympic, where he was both a player and a coach.Olympic's victory marked the first time the competition had been won by a working class side."[Hunter] took a group of basically working class mill workers from the North down to London to beat the highly fancied Old Etonians," Wood said."Hunter was a real breakthrough, because after 1883 it was all the Northern clubs who won the FA cup from then on."Before 1883 football was watched by the upper class and played by the upper class."It is this achievement, alongside Hunter's role with England, that has prompted Wood to call for a statue in Sheffield."Somebody who creates, or is part of the spark that creates, something followed by six billion people needs a statue," said Wood."When you see those photographs of people chucking beer around because England have scored, and when you see those scenes of people celebrating in the streets because their team has won, think Hunter - Hunter did that."Listen to highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North. Mateus Fernandes: How much United are willing to pay revealed
Mateus Fernandes: How much United are willing to pay revealed Things appear to have gone cold on the Mateus Fernandes trail, but Manchester United remain on course to finalise the deal soon. With the Portuguese midfielder keen to link up with his idol Bruno Fernandes, it initially seemed like an easy deal to complete on paper. But West Ham’s valuation has slowed things down, while the entry of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and other Premier League rivals have further complicated matters. There have been reports that the Red Devils are preparing their first offer, but the Hammers will insist on £80 million and are likely to reject the opening bid.INEOS keen to avoid repeating Glazer mistakesHowever, the 20-time English league champions remain confident of getting their man, but as the reliable Sully pointed out, INEOS are determined not to overpay.“Focus is on Mateus atm. Deal advancing well but we don’t want to overpay like we’ve done in the past,” Sully wrote on X (formerly Twitter). It was a common occurrence under the Glazers, with United often being fleeced by teams across Europe, with the deal for Rasmus Hojlund a recent example.Atalanta could not repeat the same trick during negotiations for Ederson, which shows the new co-owners have learnt their lesson. How much United are willing to pay for Mateus FernandesPlenty of fans will want United to pay what the London side are asking and get done with it, but that might set a wrong example on the market. And as revealed by The Manchester Evening News, United will not exceed the £70 million mark but they will likely have to pay more than £58 million and break the Championship sale record in the process.“The 21-year-old is certain to leave this summer, and West Ham are aware of that, which is damaging their negotiating power.“Fernandes will become the record holder for a sale for a Championship club (£58m), but United will not want to pay in excess of £70m for him.”United looking to play hardball for Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio SummervilleThe report further adds that with Crysencio Summerville also on the club’s radar, United could offer a combined £110 million for the duo.“West Ham are highly unlikely to turn down around £110m for Fernandes and Summerville, despite what Kretinsky may say.”The Hammers value the winger at £50 million, which means United are hoping to reduce the Championship’s valuation by nearly £20 million for both.It will be interesting to see if this ploy works out. Vikings Sign Pair of New Players
Eric CanhaThe Minnesota Vikings hired a new general manager, Nolan Teasley, earlier this month, and it didn’t take long for Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s replacement to tweak the roster. Teasley onboarded a new tight and defensive tackle, with about six weeks to go before the start of training camp.NBC Sports‘ Josh Alper wrote Tuesday, “The Vikings did some roster shuffling on Tuesday. They announced that they have signed tight end Marshall Lang and defensive lineman Jahvaree Ritzie.”“The two players are joining the team at the end of the offseason program and will have more work to look forward to at this summer’s training camp. The Vikings waived offensive tackle Caleb Etienne and defensive lineman Monkell Goodwine in corresponding moves.”Here’s what to know about those additions.Vikings Add More Size to Both Sides of the BallSeattle Seahawks tight end Marshall Lang is brought down by Green Bay Packers linebacker Kristian Welch during second-half preseason action at Lambeau Field. The play occurred on Aug. 23, 2025, in Green Bay as Lang continued his push for a roster spot while showcasing his versatility and toughness against an NFC opponent in exhibition competition. Mandatory Credit: Kayla Wolf-Imagn ImagesMarshall Lang (TE)Lang is a big tight end who will firmly fit on the roster bubble. He spent five seasons at Northwestern, gradually increasing his involvement after a quiet freshman year. From 2022 to 2024, he developed into a reliable receiving option, concluding his college career with 48 catches, 491 yards, and 4 touchdowns. While these statistics aren’t utterly spectacular, they were sufficient to attract NFL interest. He was also a teammate of new Vikings offensive tackle Caleb Tiernan at Northwestern. His physical attributes are also a plus. Lang stands 6’4″, weighs approximately 250 pounds, and possesses solid athletic test results. His size is adequate for a backup tight end role. Following the 2025 NFL Draft, Seattle initially signed him, then cut him in August, re-signed him, and cut him again. New England also cycled him through their practice squad, eventually signing him to a futures deal before releasing him in April 2026.His career path thus far has been typical for an undrafted tight end: bouncing between practice squads and aspiring to some long-term staying power, without securing a permanent NFL roster spot. The Vikings are likely evaluating him as a low-risk option, considering his size and blocking potential. That’s what June free-agent signings are for. Lang has never taken an NFL snap in the regular season. Jahvaree Ritzie (DT)Ritzie, a developmental defensive lineman, brings enough collegiate production to add a bit of intrigue to the Vikings’ summer roster. He played four seasons at North Carolina, appearing in 51 games and evolving from a rotational player into a significant contributor on the front seven. His senior season was particularly impressive: 40 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, an interception, 2 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles. Mandatory Credit: Mark Smith-Imagn ImagesUndrafted in 2025, Ritzie initially signed with the Patriots, landed on their practice squad, and was released in early September. Pittsburgh later signed him to a futures contract in January but waived him in May.Ritzie obviously isn’t a can’t-miss superstar. His journey reflects the typical NFL grind for players on the roster bubble: possessing good size and some college highlights, experiencing short tours with teams, and continuously searching for the right fit. For Minnesota, his appeal is apparent. Ritzie offers power and sufficient pass-rush production to warrant a closer look. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores can always utilize another big player capable of disrupting opposing offenses. Flores did the same thing in recent months by signing Isaiahh Loudermilk, Eric Johnson, Smith Vilbert. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein noted on Ritize before the 2025 NFL Draft, “Ritzie put together solid production in his first season as a full-time starter. He plays with adequate early hands and good base width to take on blocks but sets shallow anchors against add-on blockers that prevent him from effectively defending his turf.”“Ritzie isn’t quick enough or explosive enough for me to project disruption from him in either phase. He might be fighting for a back-end roster spot in camp.”Like Lang, Ritzie does not have regular season experience. The Updated TE RoomThe Vikings have a full house at tight end, which is why Lang must stand off the page at training camp and in the preseason to have a shot at the active roster. Here’s the pecking order in mid-June:T.J. HockensonJosh OliverBen YurosekGavin BartholomewBryson NesbitMarshall LangLang will basically have to outperform Yurosek or Bartholomew in the coming months, a task most wouldn’t consider insurmountable. Minnesota, too, could keep four tight ends on the 53-man roster, strengthening Lang’s case for the first regular season action of his young career. Northwestern Wildcats tight end Marshall Lang celebrates after scoring a touchdown during third-quarter action against Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium. The moment unfolded on Sep. 18, 2021, in Durham as Lang helped provide an offensive spark for Northwestern and added one of the early scoring highlights of his collegiate career. The DTsMinnesota has been on a heater in adding new interior defensive linemen since April. The club cut ties with Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave in March, but that was just the beginning. However, like Lang, a practice squad assignment is within reach. Lang will turn 25 in October, and Ritzie celebrated his 23rd birthday in January.

📸 6am? No problem! Nothing fazes Austria fansFrom an Austrian perspective, the first World Cup match since 1998 is kicking off at the extremely inconvenient time of 6 a.m. So is Vienna, Salzburg and the rest completely dead? Not at all! Despite the ungodly circumstances, the red-white-red supporters are fired up and backing their team from afar.Austria had plenty to cheer about early on: against a strong Jordan side, their team took a 1-0 lead thanks to a wonder goal from Romano Schmid. However, the final word is still a long way off here. Interim US-Iran deal leaves the thorniest issue still to be negotiated: Tehran’s nuclear program
Vice President JD Vance appears on "Hannity" on Monday, June 15, 2026, in New York. (Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP)2026-06-17T04:01:10Z WASHINGTON (AP) — The interim deal between the U.S. and Iran is supposed to usher in a two-month period that would address the most divisive issue between the longtime adversaries — Tehran’s nuclear program.Preventing Iran from attaining a nuclear bomb is a key reason that President Donald Trump said he launched the war alongside Israel in February, but the tentative agreement he has trumpeted leaves little runway to negotiate the long-running sticking point. The previous nuclear pact between Iran and world powers, which Trump pulled the U.S. from in his first term, took many months to negotiate.Few details have been publicly released about the initial deal, set to be officially signed Friday in Switzerland, but it generally calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz to global oil shipments, financial incentives for Iran if it meets certain benchmarks, and a 60-day period for talks on ending the country’s nuclear program. There is deep skepticism among both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, pro-Israel advocates and Israel itself that the deal is realistic, workable or would have any effect on nuclear talks. “My skepticism is Iran itself. What would a good deal look like? No enrichment. And we’ll see if we can get there,” Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a close Trump ally and longtime Iran hawk, said Tuesday. “But whether or not we can get phase two, I don’t know.” A nuclear deal takes commitment to the detailsDavid Schenker, director of the Arab Politics Program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said that “this administration has proven that it has a hard time keeping its attention on these issues.”Schenker, who served as assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs in the first Trump administration, questioned whether the current administration would have the wherewithal to reach a nuclear deal even if the agreement is signed Friday.“This is the kind of thing that requires dogged attention, attention to detail and numerous technical experts involved,” he said. “Trump loses his attention, moves on, and so does the administration. It’s like they don’t understand Iran’s strategy. They didn’t get it the first time, or the second.” Read More The Trump administration has maintained its confidence. Vice President JD Vance said much of the technical detail must be negotiated but that the U.S. must see action for Iran to receive incentives like sanctions relief. “Our plan under this deal is, again, the Iranians are getting a lot of benefits so long as they dismantle that nuclear weapons program,” Vance told Megyn Kelly on her podcast Tuesday. “People always ask me, ‘Why do you believe it this time?’ I don’t believe them,” he added. “I don’t trust anything that anybody says. I trust what people do. And the way this deal is structured is that as they do more, they receive more. As they do less, they receive less.”Iran has long maintained its nuclear program is peaceful. It took over a year and a half to get the previous nuclear dealThe 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, took more than 18 months to negotiate, starting with secret talks between U.S. and Iranian officials in Oman at the end of then-President Barack Obama’s first term. They required dozens of direct high-level interventions from Secretary of State John Kerry and Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, not to mention a team of dozens of technical experts traveling to Europe and elsewhere before the conclusion of the negotiations in Vienna, Austria.Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 before most of its more contentious concessions had come into effect, and there is no indication now that Iran is willing to offer much more. The JCPOA relied on very technical language and understandings, including limits on uranium enrichment, advanced centrifuges and heavy water production. In exchange, Iran was granted significant sanctions relief, amounting to billions of dollars. As unhappy as critics were about the JCPOA — Trump called it the “worst deal ever negotiated,” while all Republicans and a number of prominent Democrats voted against it — all sides acknowledge it took more than 18 months to get to an even imperfect agreement. Republicans say Congress must approve any dealRepublicans say any nuclear deal with Iran should be brought to Congress, as required by law. GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas said he “would certainly anticipate that” the Senate will get the final say.GOP Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said he had little confidence Iran would abide by any agreement. But Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., one of a handful of senators who has spoken to Vance about the agreement, said the shortened timeline could be an advantage.“Iran’s modus operandi is to negotiate for the purpose of delaying, so they can rearm themselves,” Marshall said. “I think the president has to give them some type of a finite amount of time, or there’s going to be consequences. So I think it can be done.”Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., noted that what could help Trump’s negotiators to hammer out a nuclear agreement in such a truncated timeline is that there is “a base” to work from following the Obama-era talks. Still, the JCPOA “took years to put together. You had allies and even adversaries — China and Russia — around the table, you had the IAEA at the table, the Obama chief negotiator had a Nobel Prize in physics, Ernie Moniz,” Kaine said. “I don’t know that either Jared Kushner or Steve Witkoff have a Nobel Prize. So it’s going to be hard.”Trump envoys Witkoff and Kushner, neither of whom had any prior experience in nuclear negotiations, made numerous but ultimately unsuccessful attempts to reach an agreement under Omani mediation during the first months of Trump’s second term. Those tapered off after the U.S.-Israel attacks on Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025 — after which Pakistan emerged as the main facilitator. There also is uncertainty about other issues besides nuclear that have been of concern to Arab countries, Israel, Europe and the United States. It is not clear that any of those issues, including Iran’s ballistic missile program, its support for militant proxies in the region or repression of its own people, will be addressed by either the interim or potential longer-term agreements.Without significant capitulations by Trump up-front, it is hard to imagine that nuclear negotiations with Iran will take only several months.“A deal is better than more fighting, but the war America and Israel prosecuted against Iran has fallen short of achieving its stated objectives,” said Brian Katulis, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute. “This agreement is mostly about cleaning up an unnecessary mess and putting the best face on it.”___Associated Press writers Seung Min Kim and Nathan Ellgren contributed to this report.

Yankees’ George Lombard Jr. gets huge timeline update on MLB debut amid Anthony Volpe’s .211 batting average
Yankees’ George Lombard Jr. gets huge timeline update on MLB debut amid Anthony Volpe’s .211 batting average originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. You just never know what the New York Yankees are going to do at the trade deadline, and the same can be said for a lot of teams around Major League Baseball. The reason is rather simple: the Yankees and other teams around the league have to decide whether to call up some of their top prospects. Top prospects are definitely factors at the trade deadline, especially when we start to factor in how some of them could be traded. Right now, it doesn't seem like the Yankees are going in that direction with George Lombard Jr., with one reporter, Robert Murray, going as far as to say that it's even a possibility that he could be a late-season call-up.“I know there's a ton of guys across the spectrum of positions that are available, but I want to lean into catching relief pitching. Those are probably the two big areas where I think the Yankees would look. Maybe shortstop, although I think Lombard has picked it up enough that he could be a late-season call-up, maybe,” Murray said.Lombard, being a late-season call-up, wouldn't be that big of a surprise if Anthony Volpe continues to struggle. However, as Murray touched on, there were some struggles outside Lombard over the past year or so. Fortunately, he's picked things up, but that's no guarantee the Yankees are okay with how he's played elsewhere.More MLB news:Brian Cashman predicted to make strong move at trade deadlineYankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr trade deadline update makes no senseBlue Jays have perfect trade opportunityAngels slugger would be perfect fit to replace Aaron JudgeYankees’ Tarik Skubal update has everything to do with Aaron Judge

Yankees’ Brian Cashman predicted to make strong move at trade deadline for reason no one is talking about
Yankees’ Brian Cashman predicted to make strong move at trade deadline for reason no one is talking about originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New York Yankees have to feel like the American League is theirs for the taking. Right now, the Yankees haven't even played that well and are 43-27, and looking around the American League, there hasn't been a slew of teams that are too impressive. In fact, I'd still go as far as to say that the one team I'd be most worried about as a Yankees fan is the Toronto Blue Jays. At the same time, the Blue Jays are 34-38 and 10 games back in the American League East. Outside of that, we see some similar teams to those we've seen in the past, with the Cleveland Guardians tied for first place in the American League Central and the Seattle Mariners 0.5 games ahead of the Athletics in the American League West. However, there's no Houston Astros, no Detroit Tigers with Tarik Skubal that I'm worried about, and no Boston Red Sox.To put things lightly, this is really the year for Brian Cashman to go all out, and according to the recent report from Robert Murray, there's an expectation that Cashman is going to go all out this season.“I expect them to be plenty active,” Murray added. “This is a season where, if I’m Brian Cashman, I try to be aggressive on the market because, if you look at the American League, obviously the Guardians have been good, and the White Sox have been good.“They’ve been good, the Rays have been good, but besides that, that’s a very winnable American League. If I’m Cashman, this is the year I’m going all out.”Right now, it just makes far too much sense for the Yankees to be active, so unless Brian Cashman doesn't believe his team has a chance to win, which they seemingly do, I'd be shocked not to see some major changes coming.More MLB news:Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr trade deadline update makes no senseBlue Jays have perfect trade opportunityAngels slugger would be perfect fit to replace Aaron JudgeYankees’ Tarik Skubal update has everything to do with Aaron JudgeDodgers could make Tarik Skubal trade for historic Yankees reason

Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr trade deadline update makes no sense
Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr trade deadline update makes no sense originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. There have been some strange reports suggesting that the New York Yankees could move on from Jazz Chisholm Jr., their All-Star second baseman who can swing it at a very high level. Chisholm had a slow start to the season, and I understand he's set to hit the free agency market at the end of the year, but for a team that already has problems in the infield, moving on from their best offensive player in the infield outside of Ben Rice just doesn't make any sense. However, it hasn't stopped people from suggesting it could happen, with Robert Murray recently reporting that there will be strong interest from other teams in Chisholm at the deadline.“There should be [interest from other teams in Chisholm],“ Murray said. “Like obviously he’s a very he’s a polarizing guy. He’s super talented, but he’s someone who if you add him, I think it makes a team a whole lot better. If I’m the Yankees, though, I don’t mess with that. I keep him on the roster. I try to continue to add on the roster.”I'm glad that Murray said the quiet part out loud, suggesting that the Yankees have absolutely no reason to let him walk at the deadline. Free agency is completely different, as New York will have to see whether they want to keep him around, but it doesn't have to deal with that for another couple of months, and the idea right now is to win a World Series, so moving on from an elite offensive player doesn't help them get any closer to that.More MLB news:Blue Jays have perfect trade opportunityAngels slugger would be perfect fit to replace Aaron JudgeYankees’ Tarik Skubal update has everything to do with Aaron JudgeDodgers could make Tarik Skubal trade for historic Yankees reasonBraves heating up as potential suitor for Tarik Skubal

World Cup 2026: Why Cristiano Ronaldo may need the tournament of his life to lift Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portugal icon and one of the best soccer players ever. He may also be an anchor on the team's chances of winning the 2026 World Cup.As Portugal opens its World Cup campaign on Wednesday against DR Congo, Ronaldo is set to become just the second player to play in six different World Cups after Lionel Messi became the first on Tuesday night against Algeria. On one hand, it's a fitting achievement for Ronaldo's career. He and Messi have been endlessly compared throughout their careers before Messi and Argentina's 2022 World Cup win effectively ended any and all debate about who was better. On the other, Messi, at 38, is still the fulcrum of Argentina's attack and the focal point of the team. Portugal could be even better without Ronaldo on the field. The 41-year-old is still a capable striker, but he's not the player he once was. He doesn't press all that often, and doesn't have the blazing speed he once did. Sure, he's still capable of a magical moment, but he's also been plying his trade in the Saudi Arabian Pro League for the past four seasons after his second tenure at Manchester United went south in 2022. Can a player in his fifth decade who plays in a middling domestic league really be a difference-maker at a World Cup?Portugal sure hopes so.When Ronaldo played in his first World Cup at the age of 21, he started all six matches on the wing and scored the clinching penalty kick against England in the quarterfinals as Portugal finished fourth.Cristiano Ronaldo has eight goals in 22 World Cup games for Portugal.Carlos Rodrigues via Getty ImagesBut since he's become the focal point of the Portugal attack, the country has failed to make it out of the group stage twice and hasn't gotten past the quarterfinals again in the other two tournaments. Those failures aren't all on Ronaldo. Portugal can be faulted in many recent World Cups for playing too conservatively. In 2018, he scored four goals in the group stage before the Portuguese lost to Uruguay in the Round of 16.However, Ronaldo is, somehow, still searching for his first goal outside of a group stage game. In 22 World Cup games, Ronaldo has eight goals. All eight have come before the knockout rounds. His lone World Cup assist came in the group stage too.Messi, meanwhile, has six World Cup assists. Yes, the two play different positions — Messi is much more of an attacking midfield playmaker while Ronaldo is a true forward — but the disparity in that stat is also telling. Ronaldo is a player who hardly ever passes up the chance at a goal. That's obvious in his domination of Portugal's free kicks and penalty kicks, even as his free kick success rate has cratered. He's scored just one goal from a direct free kick in a major tournament. That came in that 2018 World Cup.Recently, Ronaldo has started to share free kick duties. Bruno Fernandes, the reigning English Premier League Player of the Season, is a free kick specialist himself. And he's also assumed the crown of Portugal's most dangerous attacker.Fernandes, 31, will play a role similar to Messi's as an attacking midfielder for Portugal. Across 35 EPL games in 2025-26, Fernandes scored nine goals and set the league record with 21 assists. He's a master at incisive through balls, whether it's to his Manchester United teammates, Ronaldo, or any of his other incredibly talented national team teammates. Will Fernandes take a larger role on set pieces than Ronaldo at the World Cup? We'll see. He's also far from the only star in midfield for Portugal, either. The country may have the best midfield of anyone at the tournament with Bernado Silva, Vitinha and João Neves. The defense is incredibly solid too, as Ruben Días and Gonçalo Inácio occupy the middle with Joáo Cancelo and Diogo Dalot on the flanks. There's also not a clear alternative to Ronaldo, either. Even if you think that Ronaldo is now better-suited to a role off the bench as a sub who can run around for 30 minutes and be on the field in case the game goes to penalty kicks, there's not a central attacker who is a surefire option ahead of Ronaldo. Sure, his status as Portugal's greatest player ever is helping to keep him on the field. But there's no one pushing him off the pitch, either. If Ronaldo wasn't going to start up front, Gonçalo Ramos would be the most obvious option to take his place. But Ramos scored just 12 goals across 15 starts and 45 appearances for PSG in 2025-26. If he was closer to the form he showed in 2024-25, when he had 18 goals across 40 appearances, there might be more of a debate.Instead, this World Cup — again — is going to be all about Ronaldo for Portugal. If he's going to climb the mountain Messi summited four years ago, he may have to play the best tournament of his life.

Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul make MLS history together in World Cup win
KANSAS CITY, MO — It’s safe to say Rodrigo De Paul has a connection with Lionel Messi. Messi led Argentina to glory with a 3-0 win over Algeria in the opening game of the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday, June 16. Messi netted a hat trick, which helped him tie the all-time goal scoring record in World Cup history. “He’s an animal,” De Paul told DSports. “What makes me happiest is I feel that he’s enjoying it, that he doesn’t feel that pressure that he had for so long.”The first goal was set up by De Paul. He received the ball at the halfway mark and perfectly played a pass between four Algerian players. Messi collected the ball and turned. He took several dribbles before rotating the ball to his favored left foot. He drilled a shot to the corner of the net coming off of Algerian keeper Luca Zidane's finger tips and into the net. Arrowhead Stadium exploded in appreciation for Messi.Messi's opening strike came in the 17th minute of play. The two Inter Miami players celebrated together enjoying the team’s opening goal of the tournament. “It’s hard to explain. We are amazed with him (Messi) even though we see him on a daily basis,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. “He’s been the best for 20 years, he still pulls it off every single match. You don’t have to be an Argentine fan to admire him at age 38.”It was the first time, outside of the United State national team, that two MLS players combined for a goal in World Cup history.Five of De Paul’s last seven assists have scored Messi a goal for both club and country since November 2025. When De Paul made his transfer to Miami, Scaloni was not discouraged at him making the move to the MLS from Atlético Madrid. “When he left for Inter (Miami), we are not interested in the leagues,” Scaloni said. "We care about the growth. He is playing at a very good level, his physicality is very good. When he plays with the people he knows, he plays well.”During the first hydration break, Scaloni spoke to De Paul. He wanted more out of him when it came to intensity and focus. The conversation came mere minutes after Messi’s opening goal. De Paul delivered meeting his coach’s demands by playing all 90 minutes.“He is very decisive,” Scaloni said. “When he relaxes, we all feel it. I asked him to give a little more. I am happy because I never hesitated to have him play in the game.”In the stands, MLS commissioner Don Garber watched on as Messi made history and De Paul produced another strong performance. “MLS is a league that represents the rest of the world,” Garber said. “When I watch Argentina play, I might love the way that they play and love that they are world champions. But, Leo Messi and Rodrigo De Paul play for an MLS team in Miami and they are representing our league.”In the midst of Messi madness, his teammates are playing with smiles on their faces, too. When Argentina plays with joy together, the team is unstoppable, a version they showed four years ago. In the first game of Argentina's World Cup title defense, De Paul met the moment with a precise pass setting Messi’s record night into motion. "We all know his mentality, and he doesn’t let himself enjoy it much because he’s focused on helping us, the team." De Paul said. "I think he’s good, happy, and I think that’s contagious in the group."Liam Keating covers the World Cup in Kansas City for USA TODAY. 'It's very Bond': Fashion experts on the England squad's off-pitch look
[Marks & Spencer]All eyes may be on the pitch when England men's team line up for their opening World Cup game against Croatia in Dallas. But it's their fancy threads, as well as their fancy footwork, that's had people talking – from their official off-duty smart casual look to collaborations with a skateboard brand that's seen designs sell out within days of being launched.Gone are the days when the team would be seen in a traditional three-piece suit.Instead there is a collection of 12 mix-and-match pieces in navy and cream from Marks and Spencer, the FA's official partner, with not a tie in sight, all accessorised with loafers.A tie-in with Nike and skateboarding brand Palace saw many items sell out on their launch – with the team having worn a pale grey Palace tracksuit to arrive for a pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica. And there were baby blue Nike tracksuits on show as they stepped off their plane on arrival into the US for the tournament. What does their current look say about where England – and its fashion – are at?'Italian chic'Jordan Pickford, Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice pose in Marks and Spencer pieces [Marks & Spencer]Celebrity stylist Alex Longmore, who has worked with stars including Vogue Williams, Little Mix and Jamie Laing, said the overall vibe was "quite commercial" and covered "every aspect" of men's clothing."You've got your smart casual, very Tom Ford, very Bond look – it's relaxed, it's incredibly wearable, it's aspirational."I think it's very modern, Italian chic, very of-the-moment."She compared their slip-ons to boating shoes by Tom Ford and Jimmy Choo."They're very Upper East Side, Hamptons – it's kind of European, which is an interesting look and obviously very easy to wear and on trend."It's not shouting mega-formal, 'we're the England squad and here we are feeling a bit awkward because we're sportsmen'. It's more like luxury, with wool and sports jackets."As for the fact the team isn't wearing a formal suit, which some on social media complained was not smart enough, Longmore says: "Not many men wear suits unless they're going to a wedding or funeral. "And with more working from home, smart-casual is more relaxed now on every level."Athletes' bodies don't look their best in suits, they can look a bit bulky, so trousers can fall a weird way. This look is moving with the times."[Marks and Spencer]'Individuality and style'Celebrity stylist and Vogue contributor Marian Kwei says the modular look, with interchangeable pieces, is "designed with players in mind, but more importantly to push the narrative of individuality and style. "Sports athletes have become visible with brand influencing, they're content creators in their own right," she adds. She says the choice of loafers helps the look appear "approachable" and easy, alongside "a more relaxed cut" of their jackets and trousers, and notes that the players "have their own spin on what they're wearing".Some of the England teams previous looks over the years, including 1990 (top right) and 2022 (bottom left) [Corbis via Getty Images / Allsport / Getty Images / FA / M&S]Carolyn Mair, a chartered psychologist and author of The Psychology of Fashion, says the team uniform from Marks and Spencer is "a very smart, business-casual look – it is masculine but absolutely not aggressive".She adds: "It's showing their confidence, they're successful – quite discerning with the styling."And not overly corporate, because they're not wearing ties – they have polo shirts and round-neck tops. It reduces the social distance from people, we feel closer to them."She highlights the consistency of their look, saying this shows not only group identity but also "shared values"."We imagine these people are very much cohesive not just in their values but their behaviours," she adds."It doesn't look like any one of them is out there trying to get attention as the superstar of the group. It's a levelling of the playing field."Players wear Nike's X2 collection before a friendly against Costa Rica earlier this month [Getty Images / Reuters]As for the collaboration with London-based Palace, Longmore says: "It's going to be massive. They've been so clever with their marketing campaign. There are some really cool pieces."She said the 90s feel could have been inspired by England's performance in the 1990 tournament, when they came fourth."There's a big fashion moment with the 90s coming back – but also in the World Cup, 1990 was when England got a long way. I think there's a nod to that as well," she adds.Kwei describes it as "a seamless partnership" - citing a Palace pair of trainers inspired by a football boot. "It's a perfect instance of how to translate sportswear into desirable streetwear."She adds that the new partner could appeal to Gen Z - "helping introduce football and the World Cup to a new audience".Mair says the Palace tracksuit in grey again shows unity, with the chosen colour "very modern". "It's a neat move to work with a skateboarding brand," she adds. "They look fashionable, but it's not a trend." [Getty Images/AP]And their baby blue Nike tracksuit, worn as they arrived in Kansas City, Missouri, their World Cup base, also shows a lot of thought has gone into it, Kwei says, with the choice of colour being both formal and accessible."It's quite fashionable - for a reason," she adds. "It's more youthful, it's easier to connect with."Longmore says the tracksuit is "ticking all the boxes", made with recycled materials and "super trending" tapered-leg trousers."It doesn't necessarily shout 'I'm an England supporter' with a number seven on the back." Not everyone has praised it though. Anna Murphy, fashion director for the Times, called the "pale blue polyester tracksuit" a "monstrosity". But it's how they play on the night that's going to count. Mair says the uniformity of the squad's look shows they are "working together". "This is about performance, not being performative," she adds."It looks like they are prepared to do a good job."Will this translate onto the pitch on Wednesday - and in the rest of their group matches? It's all to play for.Find your local World Cup hero with our postcode lookup Staying up for the football? Here's how to survive a World Cup all-nighter

Knicks should learn from past, move on from Mitchell Robsinon, and trade for this disgruntled center
Knicks should learn from past, move on from Mitchell Robsinon, and trade for this disgruntled center originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.If we've seen anything over most of the past decade in the NBA, it's that running things back with the championship core typically doesn't lead to another championship. We've had a different champion every year for nearly a decade now, and there is something to be said about that. The NBA is at its height in terms of parity, and that's a good thing for the league. However, it's also something the New York Knicks have to consider, as after winning a championship, there's definitely a feeling that New York wants to get back to the mountaintop, and rightfully so.One name in particular that could make a lot of sense to move on from is Mitchell Robinson. Robinson had a brutal NBA Finals, and aside from his game-winning offensive rebound in Game 5 against the San Antonio Spurs, it was largely a terrible series for him.Making a move for a center to pair with Karl-Anthony Towns should be a priority, and somebody like Walker Kessler could make sense. Kessler is reportedly frustrated with not having an extension in Utah, and it could make ideal sense for a team like the Knicks.“Difficult day for the Jazz on the optics front,” Sam Amick wrote on X. “Here you have Darryn Peterson refusing to work out for the team with the No. 2 pick, one year after Ace Bailey did the same. Meanwhile, sources tell @TheAthletic that a player who does want to be there — big man Walker Kessler — is at odds with the front office over his lack of an extension offer last summer and the current handling of his restricted free agency.”A lot of this will come down to what Kessler wants, as it isn't exactly like the Knicks have a slew of money they want to spend, or can even spend. Unfortunately, that's the one harsh reality the Knicks will have to deal with as they try to get better this offseason. However, if they can make it work, Kessler would be a perfect player.More NBA news:Major NBA report should be of interest for Lakers and CelticsLakers get firm trade price tag on star to pair with Luka DoncicLakers expected to at least make one upgrade this offseason in major wayLakers get bad news on Knicks NBA champion Lakers trade proposal replaces Deandre Ayton, but there’s much more to it

Major NBA report should be of interest for Lakers and Celtics
Major NBA report should be of interest for Lakers and Celtics originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. There have been many reports that the Los Angeles Lakers have been interested in Walker Kessler over the past few seasons. Kessler, who has proven to be one of the better young centers in the NBA, has yet to be traded by the Utah Jazz. While there are some questions about what his future looks like in Utah, it doesn't sound like he wants to leave, but is more looking for a new contract.According to the latest report, there are questions about his contract, and to me, that could be good news for teams like the Lakers and even the Boston Celtics.“Difficult day for the Jazz on the optics front,” Sam Amick wrote on X. “Here you have Darryn Peterson refusing to work out for the team with the No. 2 pick, one year after Ace Bailey did the same. Meanwhile, sources tell @TheAthletic that a player who does want to be there — big man Walker Kessler — is at odds with the front office over his lack of an extension offer last summer and the current handling of his restricted free agency.”Amidst all of the questions that the Celtics will also have to answer this offseason, figuring out a long-term center should be at the top of the priority list. Not that the Celtics have a major problem at the center position, but I definitely go as far as to say that they could use some help at the five, and Kessler would do just that. The Lakers have a bigger need than the Celtics in that regard, but I can see both getting involved here, so it should be of interest to them. At the very least, I wouldn't be too surprised if there's a trade to come for Kessler in the near future.More Lakers news:Lakers get firm trade price tag on star to pair with Luka DoncicLakers expected to at least make one upgrade this offseason in major wayLakers get bad news on Knicks NBA champion Lakers trade proposal replaces Deandre Ayton, but there’s much more to itLakers proposal makes major trade including first-round pick

Federal judge temporarily blocks Idaho law threatening prison for trans restroom users
A federal judge issued a temporary injunction against Idaho’s new law, which would’ve given prison time to transgender people who use government and business restrooms that differ from the sex that they were assigned at birth. Idaho’s attorney general, Raul R. Labrador, has pledged to appeal the decision. Though the law was set to go into effect on July 1, U.S. District Judge Amanda Brailsford of the District of Idaho issued an injunction against its restroom enforcement portion after six trans state residents, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), sued to stop it. Related High school wrestler files lawsuit for sexual assault after finding out opponent was transgender Brailsford, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, said the law is “unconstitutionally vague” because it requires police officers to individually assess a person’s biological sex without any specific guidance on how to do so. Though the allow includes an exception for trans people in “dire need” who access a “reasonably available” restroom to relieve their needs, the law “furnishes no standards by which those facts are to be evaluated,” Judge Brailsford wrote. “It does not identify any objective benchmark, specify what evidence may establish such a need, or explain how an officer is to assess whether the exception applies,” the judge wrote in her 30-page decision, according to The Hill. “Instead, enforcement largely depends on an officer’s subjective assessment of an individual’s physical condition at a particular moment.” Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today She wrote that the law “imposes criminal penalties — up to a felony for repeat violations — yet leaves critical enforcement decisions to the unguided discretion of individual officers,” The New York Times reported. Last week, Idaho Solicitor General Michael Zarian suggested that police could figure out people’s gender by forcing suspected violators of the law to undergo forced DNA testing, something that usually requires a warrant. Nevertheless, Judge Brailsford also acknowledged that although the state has a “valid interest in promoting bodily privacy and protecting women and children in public restrooms from those who may seek to do harm,” she said existing laws already do that. Paul Carlos Southwick, legal director of the ACLU of Idaho Legal Director, said in a statement, “This ruling means trans folks in Idaho can continue participating in public life without the threat of being arrested for using the bathroom.” “Trans Idahoans have been understandably anxious about the disruption this unconstitutional law would cause in their daily lives,” Southwick added, noting that both the Idaho Sheriffs’ Association and the Idaho Fraternal Order of Police called the law impractical and unworkable. A first-time violation under the law would’ve resulted in a misdemeanor charge and up to a year in jail, while a second violation within five years would be a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. A fourth violation of the law would constitute a third felony conviction, punishable under Idaho’s persistent violator statute by a mandatory minimum of five years and up to life in prison. The ACLU notes that analyses of public safety data have found policies inclusive of transgender people’s access to public accommodations have no impact on rates of harassment or violence, while policies that restrict access actually increase the risk of harassment and violence. Trans people are four times as likely as their cisgender peers to be the victims of violence. In his statement pledge to appeal the judge’s ruling, Labrador noted that the part of the law barring trans people from sex-segregated locker rooms and showers remains in effect. “Biological sex is not vague, and neither is this law,” Labrador said. “The good news is that this ruling is narrow.” Currently, 21 states have passed transphobic bathroom bills, according to the Movement Advancement Project. World Cup 2026: Austria nabs win over Jordan after handball and own goal drama
Austria is playing in its first World Cup since 1998. Jordan is playing in its first World Cup ever. Victory was on the side of the returnees on Tuesday. The heavily favored Austrian side came away with a 3-1 win at Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium, surviving a back-and-forth match against a team ranked 67th in the world. The victory gives them a leg up to advance out of Group J, where Argentina and Algeria also reside.Austria struck first, scoring its first World Cup goal in 28 years when Romano Schmid scored on a screamer from outside the penalty area. Jordan's first goal ever in the tournament came early in the second, with similar beauty as a counter-attacking Ali Olwan weaved his way through the Austria defense. The drama came in two stages, later in the second half. Austria appeared to re-take the lead when some ricochets on a corner kick led to a clear net for Marko Arnautovic, but Jordan successfully argued that Stefan Posch had committed a handball in the chaos. A VAR review overturned the goal, and Austria clearly disagreed. They got their “ball don’t lie” moment minutes later when another corner saw Yazan Al-Arab accidentally head in the fifth own goal of the tournament.Tempers flared soon after that, with players needing to be separated and Austria’s Marcel Sabitzer getting a yellow card.Another handball, this time in favor of Austria, sealed the game in stoppage time. Arnautovic got his goal back on a penalty kick after VAR found a handball.Austria won the possession battle, but this was absolutely a winnable match, or at least tie-able, for Jordan, which actually recorded more shots and shots on goal. Austria had the better chances overall, but its aggressive pressing style gave the underdogs plenty of opportunities.Austria's next match will be a clash with Argentina next Monday in Arlinton, Texas, while Jordan will face Algeria in Santa Clara that same day. Argentina opened its tournament earlier Tuesday, behind a hat track by Lionel Messi.

"He's the best player of all time": Why Wrobleski's words carry weight
Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17) reacts after hitting a home run during the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Dodger Stadium. LOS ANGELES — Some baseball games are loud. Some are tense. And then there are games like Tuesday night at Uniqlo Field at Dodger Stadium, where every pitch felt like it mattered and one swing was all it took.In 1 hour and 52 minutes, the Dodgers' fastest game since August of 1992, the Dodgers blanked the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0, improving to 47-27 and further cementing their place among baseball's elite."It was a really fun baseball game to be a part of," Dave Roberts said afterward.Fun, yes. Old-school, absolutely. And in the end, it belonged to the two players who have become impossible to ignore: Shohei Ohtani and Justin Wrobleski.Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen (57) throws a pitch during the third inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesTampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen (57) throws a pitch during the third inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The game was scoreless through five innings as Wrobleski and Rays ace Drew Rasmussen traded zeros in a classic pitchers' duel. Rasmussen was brilliant, allowing just one run over seven innings while striking out seven."Rasmussen is a very good pitcher. We don't see him very often," Roberts said. "This guy's an elite pitcher and for us to find a way, Shohei hitting a homer to win an old-school baseball game, one to nothing under two hours, it was a really fun baseball game to be a part of."Then came the sixth inning.Shotime! pic.twitter.com/um1pN9etut— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) June 17, 2026With one swing, Ohtani launched a towering drive to straightaway center field that finally broke the deadlock. The ball left his bat with the authority Dodgers fans have become accustomed to seeing, disappearing over the wall for his 15th home run of the season and seventh in his last 17 games. When Ohtani is doing things like this, it feels inevitable. Not because the moment was dramatic, but because he has normalized the extraordinary.Roberts isn't surprised by the latest power surge."When he uses the big part of the field, there's no one better," Roberts said. There may not be a truer statement in baseball.Ohtani finished 1-for-4, raising his average to .297, but the box score doesn't capture what he represents. Every opposing pitcher knows one mistake can change a game. Every teammate understands his presence alters the energy of an entire lineup."It's a domino effect," Alex Freeland said. "It goes all the way down. If he gets hot, then the next person gets hot, and it just goes down the line."The numbers already place Ohtani among the greatest players the sport has ever seen. The combination of elite power, speed, offensive production and pitching accomplishments is unlike anything baseball has witnessed. But inside the Dodgers clubhouse, the debate might already be over.Asked whether he's impressed by Ohtani's impact on games, Wrobleski didn't hesitate."He's the best player of all time."Strong words?Maybe.Wrong words? That's becoming increasingly difficult to argue. Yet Ohtani wasn't the only reason the Dodgers won Tuesday night.Wrobleski delivered one of the finest starts of his young season, carving through Tampa Bay's lineup with remarkable efficiency. The left-hander didn't allow a hit until the ninth batter in the Rays lineup reached safely in the third inning.By the time his night ended, Wrobleski had thrown six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five and walking nobody. His final line:6.0 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts.Just 67 pitches. The decision to remove him after six innings raised some eyebrows, but Roberts later confirmed the plan was tied to circumstance rather than performance. Wrobleski was pitching on four days' rest and coming off a right hamstring contusion suffered in his previous outing."He gave everything we needed," Roberts said.Indeed he did.Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Justin Wrobleski (70) throws a pitch during the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Dodger Stadium. Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesLos Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Justin Wrobleski (70) throws a pitch during the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Dodger Stadium.Wrobleski attacked hitters from the first inning through the sixth, throwing 50 strikes among his 67 pitches and never allowing Tampa Bay to establish any offensive rhythm."My goal is to go out there and pitch til they take the ball away from me," Wrobleski said.On this night, the Dodgers took the ball away because they could afford to.Will Klein, Kyle Hurt and Tanner Scott combined for three perfect innings out of the bullpen, preserving the shutout and completing one of the cleanest victories of the season. The Dodgers now own 47 wins, the most in Major League Baseball, and their lead atop the National League West has grown to nine games over the San Diego Padres. More importantly, they're winning in every imaginable way. They can overwhelm opponents with offense. They can slug their way through shootouts. And on nights like Tuesday, they can win a game that feels transported from another era, a dominant starter, airtight bullpen work and one swing from the game's biggest star. One run. One home run. One masterpiece from Wrobleski. And once again, one reminder that Ohtani continues to do things no player in baseball history has ever done. The Dodgers will try for the sweep Wednesday afternoon, with Ohtani scheduled to start on the mound. Roberts confirmed after Tuesday's game that Ohtani will pitch but will not serve as the designated hitter.

Ilia Topuria's Gruesome Facial Injuries Revealed After Brutal TKO Loss
WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 14: Ilia Topuria of Spain faces Justin Gaethje in the UFC lightweight championship fight during the UFC Freedom 250 event on the South Lawn at the White House on June 14, 2026 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC)Zuffa LLCIlia Topuria suffered two broken orbital bones as a result of his fourth-round TKO loss to Justin Gaethje on Sunday at the White House in the main event of UFC Freedom 250. Gaethje finally captured the elusive undisputed UFC championship after falling short twice before.Topuria, who was previously undefeated and on a historic run, was gracious in defeat on Instagram. Details about his facial injuries spread on Wednesday after Topuria was released from the hospital. Let's talk MMA.Key Facts At A GlanceResult: Justin Gaethje def. Ilia Topuria, fourth-round TKO (corner stoppage), for the undisputed lightweight titleEvent: UFC Freedom 250, White House South Lawn, June 14, 2026Injuries: Non-displaced fractures of both orbital bones, right eye worse than the leftTreatment: No surgery required; discharged from the hospital and recovering at homeOutlook: Extended layoff; a 2026 return looks unlikelyWhat Injuries Did Ilia Topuria Suffer? Many expected to hear Topuria had at least one fractured orbital, but two was at least a mild surprise. Per the medical report relayed by MARCA, he suffered non-displaced fractures of both orbital bones, with the right eye taking the brunt of the damage. Because the breaks are non-displaced and the bone stayed in alignment, doctors determined no surgery is needed, which is the best-case read on an injury that looked far worse live. That outcome ended the unbeaten run the former champion had built over his entire career. The fractures explain the vision problems that ultimately forced the stoppage, with his eyes swelling badly as the fight wore on.What Happened In The Topuria vs. Gaethje Fight?Gaethje's uppercut in the clinch was the tone-setter. The shot popped Topuria when they were in close proximity and it dealt El Matador damage early. In the second round, Gaethje survived an all-out assault on his body. Topuria landed crushing body punches that nearly finished Gaethje. However, Topuria made the mistake of chasing a submission rather than forcing Gaethje to stand. That miscalculation likely cost him the fight. In the third, Gaethje recovered and pounded Topuria with nasty lead right hands and more uppercuts. The Octagon doctor nearly stopped the fight after the third, but was convinced to keep it going.Topuria fought well in the fourth, but took even more damage and ultimately his corner stopped the fight before the fifth round. What Did Ilia Topuria Say About The Loss? After the loss, Topuria took to Instagram to congratulate Gaethje on his performance. He made no excuses and said he wanted a rematch. In the post, Topuria told Gaethje "you said you'd leave your mark on my face… and you did," and said he lost vision in his right eye in the first round and his left by the end of the second. He insisted there were "no excuses" after one of the best camps of his life, and signed off vowing the two would “have our rematch.”When Will Ilia Topuria Return? It's hard to say for sure. Thankfully, he doesn't need surgery to repair his injuries, but there is no question he's likely looking at a lengthier absence than normal. A return in early 2027 seems most likely. As for the rematch Topuria wants, Gaethje has been cool on the idea, arguing he won decisively and made Topuria quit on the stool. Whether the UFC books it will likely depend on how Gaethje’s reign and Topuria's recovery unfold over the coming months. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Commanders' 2026 minicamp: Sights and sounds from Day 1
The Washington Commanders opened their three-day minicamp on Tuesday. Head coach Dan Quinn informed the media ahead of practice that Washington would complete all three days of practice before breaking for training camp in just over a month. Quinn emphasized what he wanted to see from this week's minicamp. He wants the players who didn't get as much work in OTAs to get more this week. It's all about building depth. In some good news, wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Antonio Williams, as well as running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, were back on the field participating in every drill. Croskey-Merritt had worked on the side field during OTAs, while McLaurin and Williams missed some time last week. Outside of the four players recovering from last season's injuries, everyone practiced fully. As far as what happened on the field, here are some of the best videos and images, courtesy of those in attendance in Ashburn. England will not adapt style despite USA heat - Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel says that he is "not ready to adapt" England's playing style at the World Cup despite the heat - as it would mean forfeiting the team's strengths.Since starting his job as head coach in January 2025, Tuchel has made a point of saying how much he likes the physicality of English domestic football and that the national side should replicate that style. The 52-year-old's squad selections have followed that thinking with an emphasis on strength and powerful running when he picked his 26-man squad for the tournament."They want to be active with the ball," the German told BBC Sport about his England side before their World Cup opener against Croatia on Wednesday (21:00 BST)."We have a young group. We have a courageous group. We have a brave group of players."So let's go for it. I mean, no-one guarantees you that we win. So we want to at least try it, our style and our belief."The temperatures in the USA, Mexico and Canada are extremely high and mandatory hydration breaks have been introduced in all matches, effectively breaking them into quarters.Speaking at the news conference before the Croatia match, Tuchel said hydration breaks can "change the character of each half".He acknowledged the three-minute intervals give coaches chance to "change and reset" during games while delivering "group messages".Temperatures in Dallas will be more than 30C by the time England kick off their opening Group L game - but the effects of the heat will be reduced because the Dallas Stadium is one of the air-conditioned indoor venues being used at this World Cup.Starting the tournament in that stadium has given Tuchel belief that his side can impose their style on Croatia "because we play indoors".But the England boss did reference the impact that the heat has had on his players at their Kansas City training base."Yesterday, it was very hot even here in training," Tuchel said."And we could feel that it has a more impact than, for example, today. So let's see."I'm just not ready to adapt into a different style of football because of circumstances that we cannot influence. I think we would just give up our strengths."Thomas Tuchel's England side play their first match in Dallas on Wednesday [Getty Images]Tuchel came to the US for last year's Club World Cup and, with the support team at the Football Association, used that tournament to plan England's World Cup preparation."Research about the Club World Cup showed us that the style is pretty much the same, but maybe the repetition is less often," he said."So maybe a player who has maybe 10 to 15% less sprints, less distance. It [the conditions] influenced the volume and the intensity but the style of play not so much."In the end we need to have an answer anyway to every scenario."So, will we be a lot in possession or will we attack a lot the last third of the opponent? Barcelona superstar eager to start in Spain’s next World Cup against Saudi Arabia – report
Barcelona superstar eager to start in Spain’s next World Cup against Saudi Arabia – reportOne of the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup this summer, Spain’s campaign started out on a concerning note as they were held to a goalless draw by debutants Cabo Verde.A missing link in the Spanish armada was Lamine Yamal, who had to start on the bench on account of concerns over his fitness and the fact that he was not 100% ready to feature.Yamal’s absence in the Spain frontline was evident as La Roja struggled to completely dominate Cabo Verde’s deep defensive line, ultimately failing to break the deadlock.Yamal desperate to start vs Saudi ArabiaAfter a draw in Spain’s first game, Yamal is now desperate to help his nation by starting in their second World Cup group stage match against Saudi Arabia.Lamine Yamal did not start vs Cabo Verde. (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)According to El Chiringuito, Yamal no longer wants to sit on the bench or have limited time on the pitch. He is obssessed with the idea of starting a World Cup match. However, the winger is facing some pushback from Spain’s technical team, which believes Yamal is not fully fit to be able to start matches for La Roja.It must be noted that the explosive winger was suffering from an injury during the last phase of the campaign and was initially ruled out for first few matches. But Yamal has pulled him back into condition, although the technical team wants to maintain a cautious and not take too many risks with the forward.Do Spain really need Yamal in group stages? All eyes on Yamal (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)Spain’s disappointing result against Cabo Verde was a reminder that the team, despite all its talents, still lacks the presence of an explosive winger who can turn the game on its head. Although the likes of Ferran Torres, Gavi and Mikel Oyarzabal started, their performances were overshadowed by Yamal after he came on as a substitute in the second half. That being said, Spain still have enough firepower to power through at least the group stages, especially with the new rule changes that would allow even third-placed teams to have a chance of reaching the final 32.Therefore, resting Yamal for the Saudi Arabia game could be a good idea as Spain look to have him fully fit for the knockout round of the tournament.

Austria beat Jordan for first World Cup win since 1990
FIFA World CupAustria 3 - 1 Jordan FTAustria have won a match at the World Cup finals for the first time since 1990 as they beat debutants Jordan in San Francisco. The European side took the lead with a stunning 21st-minute strike from Romano Schmid but Jordan equalised five minutes into the second half thanks to a curled effort from Ali Olwan.Former Stoke and West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic thought he had restored Austria's lead when he finished a loose ball after Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila had failed to deal with a corner. However, following an intervention from the video assistant referee, the goal was disallowed as television replays showed the ball had hit the arm of Stefan Posch. But it did not matter as Austria, managed by former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick, went back in front in the 76th minute as Yazan Al Arab flicked the ball into his own net after a corner.Arnautovic then sealed the win when he converted a penalty in the 12th minute of injury time after Saleem Obaid handled the ball.Austria face reigning champions Argentina on Monday (18:00 BST) after Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick in their 3-0 win over Algeria. Messi needs one goal to become the outright top goalscorer in World Cup finals as his treble left him on 16 goals, the same as previous record-holder Miroslav Klose of Germany.Jordan, 67th in the world rankings, will be encouraged by their performance but will need a positive result against Algeria (Tuesday, 04:00) before ending their group campaign against Argentina.Austria are playing in the finals for the first time since 1998, and this victory was their first since they defeated the United States 2-1 on 19 June 1990.Austria's best performance at a World Cup came in 1954 when they finished third [Getty Images]World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

But after repeated frame-by-frame replays, the third umpire concluded that part of the ball had brushed the turf as the catch was completed. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia subsequently urged the squad to stay focused on cricket and avoid what he termed "collateral issues."The Bigger Picture: The hype needs to cool down around SooryavanshiUpon careful inspection, it can be seen that none of this is really about Sooryavanshi's talent, which has never been in question. It is about the noise that follows a 15-year-old wherever he goes right now.A controversial catch becomes a headline, a scuffle becomes a story, and a string of starts without a big score becomes a talking point rather than what it actually is. In the end, he is still a teenager adjusting to a new level of cricket. Would New York Yankees Trade No. 1 Prospect For A Lefty Slugger?
TAMPA, FL - FEBRUARY 28: George Lombard Jr. of the New York Yankees poses for a photo during spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Field on February 28, 2024 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images)Getty ImagesNew York Yankees three-time most valuable player, and seven-time All Star, Aaron Judge, remains sidelined while dealing with a stress fracture on the first rib of his right side. Most teams can withstand a an injury to a major team contributor. Most players can be replaced. But this is Aaron Judge. When the injury was first announced, sporting news.com indicated Judge…”will be re-imaged in four to six weeks.”When Judge played his last game May 31, 2026 against the Athletics, he had had 10 doubles, 17 home runs, and had driven in 38 runs for New York. While he was hitting only .248, Judge had scored 43 runs. The Yankees, while they lead the tough American League East Division slightly over the Tampa Bay Rays, can ill afford to go into an offensive slump.DETROIT, MI - JUNE 10: Detroit Tigers Kerry Carpenter prior to game between Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers on June 10, 2026 at Comerica Park in Detroit, MI (Photo by Allan Dranberg/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesWill The New York Yankees Turn To The Trade Market?Might the Yankees seek to trade their top prospect, George Lombard Jr. , 21, in hopes of upgrading their offense, their catching room, or their bullpen?A player like Lombard Jr., a right-handed infielder, might fetch just the veteran player that can make a difference for the Yankees down the stretch. For this old scout, the name of Detroit Tigers left-handed hitting Kerry Carpenter comes to mind as a power-hitting veteran that might appeal to New York.Carpenter, 28, is in the prime of his career. At 6-1, 220 pounds, Carpenter is strong and dangerous as a slugger. The Yankees would gain a considerable amount of control over Carpenter’s contract.Carpenter is working on a one-year, $3.28 Million contract. He is still arbitration eligible, until he can become a free agent in 2029.Carpenter crushes right-handed pitching. He would be an ideal fit as a designated hitter or in right field, especially in games at Yankee Stadium.Carpenter hit 26 home runs for the Tigers last season. He drove in 62 runs.Carpenter missed time with a barking shoulder this year, but he is back healthy. He has nine homers in 157 plate appearances this season.Fansided.com has looked at several potential Tigers trade chips. This is among what they said about Kerry Carpenter: Carpenter is…”a destroyer of worlds against right-handed pitching who posted an .812 OPS in such matchups last season.”The Tigers have platooned Carpenter, removing him against left-handed pitching. That’s not to say he wouldn’t find success against lefties, if data quantifies a particular lefty or two as a favorable matchup for Carpenter. But Lombard Jr. is the Yankees No. 1 prospect, as noted by MLB.com.So yes, Lombard Jr. would be a steep price to pay for a hitter like Carpenter. But Lombard Jr. is an unproven prospect. Carpenter is a proven power hitter, capable of ending a game with one swing from the left batter’s box.ARLINGTON, TEXAS - MAY 28: Jeremy Peña #3 of the Houston Astros runs the bases after hitting a solo home run against the Texas Rangers during the first inning at Globe Life Field on May 28, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ron Jenkins/Getty Images)Getty ImagesWith the Rays, and potentially additional teams breathing down the necks of the Yankees for supremacy in the AL East, it make sense for New York to explore the trade market to find a player or players that can add some immediate pop in their lineup. The team does have the powerful Ben Rice, steady Cody Bellinger, and possibly even Jazz Chisholm and Paul Goldschmidt capable of delivering the long ball.None of those equal the threat of Aaron Judge. If the Yankees can’t find a big bat to add some clout to their lineup, maybe they look to upgrade shortstop, catcher, or the bullpen. In those cases, it isn’t likely George Lombard Jr. would be the right trade chip. Maybe it would take a different player or mix of players to fetch a lineup upgrade.Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is likely kicking the tires on several teams.ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 08: Josh Hader #71 of the Houston Astros pitches during the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on June 08, 2026 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Katelyn Mulcahy/Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe Houston Astros come to mind.As noted by si.com, the Astros could make shortstop Jeremy Pena, and left-handed reliever, Josh Hader available. Both Pena and Hader would extract a hefty price. As sports.yahoo has pointed out, the Yankees may want to upgrade their catching room with the addition of veteran Carson Kelly. The article noted, “”But while he might not be too expensive, he would be a huge upgrade for the current catching room.”Conclusions About New York Yankees Trade Needs:It is impossible for the Yankees to replace All World Aaron Judge during the time of his injury absence. However, a player like Detroit Tigers outfielder, Kerry Carpenter might offer just the type of firepower the Yankees need heading to the second half of the season.Carpenter, a left-handed hitter, would be ideal with the right-field friendly Yankee Stadium porch.Money should not be an issue for the New York Yankees to obtain Carpenter. To obtain a player like Carpenter, the Yankees may have to trade top prospect George Lombard, Jr. to add the pop the New York Yankees need for the stretch run. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 was 0.8% higher at 69,926.08 near its all-time high set this week, after official data showed Japan’s exports jumped 17% in May from a year earlier, helped in part by strong demand for high-tech products.South Korea’s Kospi edged 0.2% lower to 8,706.10 with losses in big technology stocks tracking a sell-off of artificial intelligence-related shares on Wall Street. Rex Heuermann to be sentenced in New York’s Gilgo Beach serial killings
Rex Heuermann appears in Judge Timothy Mazzei's courtroom at Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, N.Y., for a status conference, Feb. 25, 2025. (James Carbone/Newsday via AP, File)2026-06-17T04:19:34Z RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island architect who lived a secret life as New York’s Gilgo Beach serial killer is being sentenced Wednesday after admitting in court that he murdered eight women.Rex Heuermann faces the likelihood of a life prison sentence when he goes before a judge in Riverhead, New York. Family members of his victims are expected to address the court. The sentencing caps an extraordinary investigation that solved one of New York’s most perplexing mysteries — one that began as a series of seemingly unconnected, and largely unmarked disappearances of young women, but became the focus of true-crime documentaries, books and podcasts after police began discovering the victims’ skeletal remains in the sandy scrub along a coastal parkway.Heuermann, who has remained largely silent through multiple court appearances since his 2023 arrest, will also have a chance to speak Wednesday, but it’s not immediately clear if he will. His lawyers didn’t respond to messages seeking comment. Asa Ellerup, his ex-wife, and their two grown children have said through their lawyers that they won’t be attending the sentencing out of respect for the victim’s families. Heuermann, 62, of Massapequa Park, pleaded guilty in April to charges that he murdered seven women: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. Read More Though he was never charged in her death, he also admitted in court to killing an eighth victim, Karen Vergata. Heuermann said he strangled his victims, many of them sex workers, and dismembered some of their bodies. Most of the women disappeared between 2000 and 2010, and most of their remains were found on a desolate parkway not far from Long Island’s Gilgo Beach, some 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Manhattan. But two of the killings took place years earlier. Costilla’s remains were found in 1993, more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) away in the Hamptons, while Vergata’s remains were found in 1996 on Fire Island, more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Gilgo Beach. The case spilled into view in 2010, when investigators started to find remains along Ocean Parkway while looking into the disappearance of another sex worker, Shannan Gilbert, whose death was ultimately ruled an accidental drowning. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. The search for the killer of the other women, though, went cold for years until a renewed investigation identified Heuermann as a potential suspect in 2022.Detectives linked him to a pickup truck that a witness reported seeing when one of the victims disappeared in 2010. Eventually, they matched DNA from a pizza crust Heuermann had discarded in a Manhattan trash can to genetic material extracted from highly degraded hair fragments found on the women’s remains.Investigators amassed other evidence against Heuermann, including cellphone and tracking data showing Heuermann arranged meetings with some of the victims shortly before their disappearances. Then in 2024, after Heuermann’s arrest, prosecutors recovered what they described as a “blueprint” for the killings from his computer files. Among the documents was a series of checklists with reminders to limit noise, clean the bodies and destroy evidence. As part of his guilty plea, Heuermann has agreed to cooperate with the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit to help catch other serial killers. He’s been housed in the county jail in Riverhead since his arrest in July 2023, but will serve out his term in a state prison to be determined later.Heuermann has spent the past three years alone in a segregated cell, reading crime novels, occasionally being visited by his lawyers or family, and striking up a brief correspondence with the infamous “Happy Face Killer,” according to Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, who oversees the Riverhead jail.___Follow Philip Marcelo at https://x.com/philmarcelo PHILIP MARCELO Marcelo is a general assignment reporter in the NYC bureau. US strike on an alleged drug boat kills 1, leaves 2 survivors in the eastern Pacific Ocean
President Donald Trump speaks during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Wednesday, May 27, 2026, in Washington, as Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, looks on. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)2026-06-17T00:53:41Z The U.S. military attacked a boat accused of smuggling drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, killing one man and leaving two survivors, as the Trump administration continues its monthslong campaign against alleged traffickers in Latin America. The latest attack brings the number of people who have been killed in boat strikes by the U.S. military to at least 208 since the Trump administration began targeting those it calls “narcoterrorists” in early September. As with most of the military’s statements on strikes in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, U.S. Southern Command said it targeted the alleged drug traffickers along known smuggling routes. The military did not provide evidence that the vessel was ferrying drugs. A video posted on X showed a boat traveling in the water before being hit by the strike and bursting into flames. Southern Command said it “immediately notified U.S. Coast Guard to activate the Search and Rescue system for the survivors.”President Donald Trump has said the U.S. is in “armed conflict” with cartels in Latin America and has justified the attacks as a necessary escalation to stem the flow of drugs into the United States and fatal overdoses claiming American lives. But his administration has offered little evidence to support its claims of killing “narcoterrorists.” Critics have questioned the overall legality of the boat strikes as well as their effectiveness, in part because the fentanyl behind many fatal overdoses is typically trafficked to the U.S. over land from Mexico, where it is produced with chemicals imported from China and India. Read More The strikes have drawn intense scrutiny from some Democratic lawmakers and military legal scholars. The U.S. military’s first strike in early September drew particular concern from some lawmakers and those who study military law. Two men on the boat initially survived the attack that killed nine others, and they were clinging to the wreckage when the vessel was struck again, killing them. The White House confirmed the follow-up strike, insisting it was done “in self-defense” to ensure the boat was destroyed and in accordance with the laws of armed conflict. But some legal scholars said a second strike killing survivors would have been illegal under any circumstance, armed conflict or not.The Pentagon’s watchdog said in May that it plans to look into whether the U.S. military followed an established targeting framework when carrying out the strikes. However, the evaluation is focused specifically on what’s known as the six-phase Joint Targeting Cycle and not on the legality of the strikes, the inspector general’s office said.

Everything you missed from day six at World Cup 2026: Messi magic, England’s late squad change, and VAR controversy
For 66 minutes it looked like everything was going wrong for Kylian Mbappe. While France toiled in their Group I opener against Senegal, the forward’s first touch was sloppy and he was denied what everyone apart from the officials thought was a penalty. Then Mbappe came alive, scoring two stunners to ensure lift-off for Didier Deschamps’ title chasers.Despite defeat, Senegal’s impressive performance piled some pressure on Norway to win against unfancied Iraq in the group’s later kick-off - which they duly did, courtesy of another impressive Erling Haaland performance as he bagged a brace on his tournament debut. Argentina and Lionel Messi also began their defence of the title won four years ago in an entertaining contest versus Algeria. It was the first competitive match played between the nations and kicked off with two disallowed goals inside the opening 10 minutes. Messi then took centre stage and rattled home a stunning opener, a second half tap-in and a delightful third to boost his own World Cup tally and kick start Argentina’s pursuit of another title in superb fashion. Here is everything you need to know from day six of the super-sized tournament:Mbappe double follows first major VAR controversyWhile Mbappe became France’s all-time record goalscorer with his double in New Jersey, a decision not to award him a penalty when the match remained scoreless was questioned by many - including several referees themselves, according to the BBC’s resident official Darren Cann.Iranian-Australian referee Alireza Faghani initially gave a corner – and then changed his decision to a goal-kick after watching replays. Mbappe had dribbled into the box where Senegal’s Sadio Mane slid in to make a tackle. As Mane reached Mbappe, the France captain touched the ball away from his opponent and then collapsed in a heap under Mane’s challenge.Referee Faghani was sent to review the decision on his pitchside monitor by his VAR, and as he stepped back on to the pitch, French players and coaching staff began to celebrate. But instead of awarding a penalty, Faghani announced: “The attacker initiated the contact.”There was bewilderment as Mbappe was denied a penalty (Getty)Partey loses Canada visa appealThomas Partey will miss Ghana’s match against Panama after a Canadian court on Tuesday dismissed his appeal against being denied entry. The 33-year-old had been refused a visa by the Canadian government last week, prompting his legal team to launch a last-minute challenge at the Federal Court in Ottawa. The Black Stars play Panama in their Group L match in Toronto on Wednesday. In dismissing the appeal, judge Roger Lafreniere wrote that Partey sought "extraordinary, mandatory interlocutory relief" that would have required Canada to set aside a "lawfully rendered inadmissibility finding and facilitate his entry for a specific event."Former Arsenal midfielder Partey denies seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault, relating to allegations by four different women between 2020 and 2022, and is due to stand trial next year. Injured Livramento replaced by ChalobahTrevoh Chalobah has been called up to replace the injured Tino Livramento in England’s World Cup squad.Livramento’s calf injury is an early blow for Thomas Tuchel’s preparations for the tournament, coming just one day before the Three Lions’ opener against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday.Tuchel was able to replace Newcastle full-back Livramento in the squad with a deadline of 9pm BST on Tuesday – 24 hours before England’s first game of the tournament – and Chelsea defender Chalobah was on his way to the United States on Tuesday. Chalobah will not be involved against Croatia, but will be available for subsequent group matches against Ghana and Panama. The injury-prone Newcastle full-back picked up a calf issue in training (Reuters)Erling Haaland scores double on near-perfect World Cup debutHaving seen Mbappe run riot against Senegal, this generation’s other star striker clearly thought ‘anything you can do, I can do better’. Making his World Cup debut, Haaland scored twice in the first half as Norway beat a spirited Iraqi side 4-1 to end the first matchday top of Group I. The 25-year-old is already Norway’s record goalscorer, now with 57 goals in 51 caps, and it looks like as well as duelling for top spot in Group I, he and Mbappe will be fighting for the tournament’s Golden Boot. He only had 11 touches in the first half - the fewest of any player on the pitch - but two of them were goals. The first was a tap-in from a Moller Wolfe cutback, with the second also coming at close range as the Manchester City striker closed down Iraq keeper Jalal Hassan, who dawdled on the ball after a poor backpass by Zaid Tahseen and paid the price. He missed a second-half chance for a hat-trick, too, and was narrowly denied an assist as he headed the ball across goal for Kristian Thorstvedt to bundle home Norway’s fourth on the night - but the strike was marked down as an Aymen Hussein home goal. Haaland ran riot against Iraq (Getty)Magic Messi equals Klose’s recordAlgeria were warned. A dainty pass slipped into the right side of the penalty area by Lautaro Martinez played Lionel Messi in on goal and he routinely found the back of the net by beating Luca Zidane on his near side. The crowd inside the Kansas City Stadium erupted in cheers only for the celebrations to get cut short as the football legend was ruled offside. It was a chance taken just five minutes into Argentina’s World Cup opener and looked as though the 38-year-old had picked up exactly where he left off when winning the tournament four years ago. But it was not to be and Messi had to wait a further 12 minutes before making his mark on the 2026 edition of the World Cup. Supplied by his close teammate Rodrigo de Paul, the little master spun towards goal before drawing a stunning effort from left-to-right, through the hands of Zidane and into the top, right corner with the pinpoint accuracy of his heydays. It is the type of goal that reminds the World Cup hopefuls that Messi may be heading into the twilight of his career but he retains all the prowess and skill of his younger self and, perhaps most importantly, the desire to achieve wonders on the biggest stage of all. A second goal of the game caame from a fortuitous tap-in before a slick move late in the second half set him up for a driving finish that takes him to 16 goals across his six World Cup tournaments. That puts him level with record holder Miroslav Klose who he will surely surpass before this tournament is done.Leo Messi fired Argentina into the lead against Algeria and sent a reminder that he wants to regain the World Cup (AP)Austria deny Jordan debut pointAn own goal and a late Marko Arnautovic penalty denied Jordan a dream debut point as they fell short to Austria in their World Cup opener.Romano Schmidt had given Austria the lead in the first half but that was cancelled out by Ali Olwan, who expertly bent home to score Jordan’s first ever goal at a World Cup finals. But there was heartbreak to come for the debutants, with Yazan Al Arab putting into his own net with 14 minutes to play to give Austria a lifeline, before Arnautovic converted from the spot with the last kick of the game to seal the win.

Mbappe becomes France's all-time top scorer in win over Senegal
FIFA World CupFrance 3 - 1 Senegal FTKylian Mbappe became France's all-time leading goalscorer with a superb double as Les Bleus beat Senegal in their World Cup opener in New Jersey.Mbappe broke Senegal's resistance in the second half with a low strike before rifling home a sensational long-range effort deep into stoppage time. The Real Madrid forward's second strike lifted him on to 58 goals for Les Bleus - one clear of former record holder Olivier Giroud.Bradley Barcola had earlier put France 2-0 up before Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back, but Mbappe's second of the game ended Senegal's hopes of a comeback. It had been an underwhelming display by France prior to Mbappe's opener as Senegal created the better opportunities and were perhaps unfortunate not to break the deadlock in an impressive first-half display.Nicolas Jackson went closest for the Lions of Teranga when he rifled a low shot against the base of the post - which rebounded off goalkeeper Mike Maignan's foot and trickled narrowly wide of the upright.Ismaila Sarr should have given Senegal the lead on the stroke of half-time but failed to steer his close-range effort on target after connecting with Sadio Mane's cross.France, though, emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and were controversially denied a penalty when Mane appeared to catch Mbappe inside the box.Referee Alireza Faghani initially awarded a corner for France, but the majority of fans inside the stadium were expecting the official to award a spot-kick after he was sent to his monitor by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).Faghani, however, decided that Mbappe had initiated the contact with former Liverpool forward Mane.It ultimately mattered little, though, as France - and Mbappe - responded in style to secure all three points."People will still criticise him," said Deschamps. "He can from time to time miss a game or two but on one action he really is able to tip the scales and bring his team to victory."People say he doesn't defend enough – well, he isn't here to defend. He is only 27, from the first day on, before he scored the two goals today, he does a lot for the group as a captain."I am happy for him. He wanted to score in a real match and especially this match with a global audience, he has a real aura."Project Mbappe - the road to becoming France's record scorerThe VAR call that dumbfounded the world's best refsAnalysis: France click into gear - eventuallySenegal famously beat Les Bleus in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup, with the late Papa Bouba Diop scoring the only goal in one of the biggest shocks in the competition's history. For a while, the Lions of Teranga looked capable of securing another memorable victory against the two-time winners, whose star-studded front four of Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Michael Olise failed to click in the first half.France managed only three touches inside the Senegal box before the break, and Mbappe struggled to have any impact on the game.Didier Deschamps' team, though, were a different animal after the break.Doue flashed a shot wide within seconds of the restart, while Olise and Mbappe were both denied by Mendy when clean through on goal. But the former Chelsea keeper was unable to prevent Mbappe, 27, from stealing the show. The former Monaco and Paris St-Germain striker is now on 14 World Cup goals – level with former Germany great Gerd Muller in the all-time charts.Jackson had a goal disallowed for offside not long after Mbappe's opener, before Barcola's delicate finish gave France a two-goal cushion late in the second half.Eighteen-year-old Mbaye - now the youngest African goalscorer in World Cup history - gave his side hope with a thunderous effort from a tight angle, but Mbappe's 25-yard effort clinched the win for France. What's next for these teams?France travel to Philadelphia to play Iraq in their next Group I game on Monday, 22 June (22:00 BST), while Senegal face Norway in New Jersey (01:00 BST on Tuesday, 23 June).World Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

The most goals in World Cup history as Lionel Messi equals record with stunning hat-trick
The most goals in World Cup history as Lionel Messi equals record with stunning hat-trickLionel Messi made history overnight as his hat-trick helped Argentina to a 3-0 win over Algeria in their 2026 World Cup opener.Messi's treble saw him equal the record for most World Cup goals, just hours afterFrance's Kylian Mbappe had scored twice against Senegal to break into the all-time top five scorers.FIFA World Cup all-time top scorersKylian Mbappe - France (14)Kylian Mbappe has scored 14 goals in just 15 games at the World Cup after netting twice against Senegal on Tuesday. At just 27, Mbappe has established himself as one of the most impactful players in World Cup history. He won the 2018 tournament as a teenager, scoring four times, including in the final win over Croatia. That goal saw him become only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final, after Pele.Mbappe won the Golden Boot in 2022 with eight goals, a return which included a hat-trick in France's final defeat to Argentina. It was only the second time a player had scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final and the first in a defeat. His brace against Senegal to open the 2026 tournament took him above Pele and Just Fontaine, while also setting a new record as France's record scorer (58).Gerd Muller - Germany (14)Gerd Muller averaged better than a goal per game at the World Cup, scoring 14 goals in only 13 games across two tournaments.'Der Bomber' scored 10 goals as WestGermany reached the 1970 semi-finals, a performance that saw Muller win that year's Ballon d'Or.Team success arrived in the following tournaments with triumphs at the 1972 European Championship and 1974 World Cup. Muller scored four goals at the latter, including the decisive goal in the final win over the Netherlands.Ronaldo Nazario - Brazil (15)O Fenômeno has one of the great World Cup stories. Having watched on as an unused member ofBrazil's successful squad in 1994, Ronaldo was the world's finest footballer when the tournament headed to France in 1998.He scored four goals on a seemingly unstoppable run to success, only for disaster to strike. Ronaldo was taken ill in the hours before the final and, despite returning to feature, was unable to impact the game as Brazil were beaten by the hosts. In 2002, he completed a remarkable redemption arc. Included in the Brazil squad despite missing much of the previous two-and-a-half years with serious knee injuries, he scored eight goals to win the Golden Boot and fire Brazil to the trophy. He added three goals in 2006, taking his career haul to 15 World Cup goals.Miroslav Klose - Germany (16)Miroslav Klose became Germany's all-time top scorer during an illustrious international career, with 16 of his goals scored at the World Cup.He broke into the team ahead of the 2002 tournament and marked his World Cup debut with a headed hat-trick against Saudi Arabia, scoring five times in Japan and South Korea. He added five more to win the Golden Boot on home soil in 2006, and four more as Germany reached the semi-finals in 2010.His fourth and final World Cup saw Klose break the goal record, while, crucially, claiming World Cup success. Germany beat Argentina 1-0 to be crowned world champions in Brazil.Lionel Messi - Argentina (16)Lionel Messi kickstarted his record sixth World Cup with a hat-trick to sink Algeria and tie Klose for the most goals in World Cup history.Messi had scored 13 goals in five previous tournaments, with seven coming during an unforgettable tournament in Qatar in 2022. After so many disappointments in his Argentina career, Messi finally got his hands on the World Cup. It was a success that he inspired, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.A fitting, and long-awaited, success on the world stage for perhaps the greatest talent the game has ever seen.

Guardians News: Twins Prevent AL Central From Being Swept
AYODHYA, INDIA - 2023/12/27: A man sweeps the street on a foggy winter morning in Ayodhya. The winter season, which starts in October and lasts till March, is the best time to visit Ayodhya. Temperatures during this season range between 20°C during the day and 5°C at night. (Photo by Biplov Bhuyan/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images) We usually start this type of post by talking about the Guardians, so I’ll do that briefly. If you’ve been following this team at all closely as of late, you probably had a strong feeling about how last night’s game was going to go. “But you can’t predict ball!” the naysayers will say. You can when the Guardians offense is involved, and last night’s game was one of the most predictable sporting events I have watched in my lifetime. Right down to the Brewers reliever who keeps lucking into Pitcher Wins lucking into yet another. And onto other stuff…• The Tigers, White Sox and Royals also lost. The Twins picked up a full game on all 4 of their rivals.• You may have already seen CTC’s depressing headlines about Jose being out 5-7 weeks and Angel Martinez being out a similar amount of time.• Also hitting the IL was Randy Arozarena.• Also getting injured was Colt Keith…• And Twins prospect Kaelen Culpepper…• And Michael Harris…• And Maikel Garcia.• And Luis Rengifo was DFA’d. Anybody who is a fan of a FO that has a Bad Hitter Fetish should be nervous.
