SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTop of the Morning, June 17, 2026Jun. 17—On Wednesdays, we'll chop it up with our Golfer of the Week. Email nominations to .Nolan Wishall desperately wanted to share the news of his first hole-in-one with Dad, who was in a group playing three holes ahead on the University of Illinois Orange course in Savoy.Only problem: Jason Wishall wasn't picking up."I had to call him six times before he answered, and when he finally did, he didn't believe me," Nolan said.It was Dad's 51st birthday, and Jason figured the excited voice on the other end was pulling a prank. "He thought I was messing with him," said Nolan, who handed the phone to playing partner and best friend Noah Bryant to convince him otherwise.A 19-year-old sophomore at Iowa State, Nolan didn't play golf at Unity High because the school didn't offer it at the time. He got hooked at age 13 and is improving by the round, "getting to the point where I'm shooting in the mid 80s."No. 6 was playing 167 yards when Nolan skied his 6-iron toward the elevated green. He assumed "it went long and rolled off" so the foursome went looking for it. Told to check the cup, Nolan "went nuts on the green" when he realized what had happened. "My heart rate was going through the roof."While the ace doesn't change Nolan's plan of pursuing a career in mechanical engineering, it only spikes his interest in golf. The eight family and friends — playing a scramble as part of Dad's birthday bash — celebrated in the clubhouse afterward even though he was too young to spring for a traditional round of drinks. "Luckily for my wallet," Noah said.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 1 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
APNEWS.COMTrump delays Clayton’s nomination for intelligence director, but committee chairman promises hearingJay Clayton, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, listens during a news conference in New York, March 9, 2026. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig, File)2026-06-17T08:21:04Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was delaying federal prosecutor Jay Clayton’s nomination to lead the U.S. intelligence community in a bid to force Congress to act on a voter ID bill that currently lacks enough support for passage, but a key Republican senator vowed to push forward with a hearing anyway. The dueling statements from Trump and Tom Cotton, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, create uncertainty over the long-term leadership of the 18-agency intelligence community and dash hopes for a swift renewal of a crucial surveillance program that expired in Congress last week due to bipartisan anger over Trump’s pick of Bill Pulte, a top U.S. housing official, as acting director of national intelligence. The tumult began early Wednesday, when Trump, in a social media post just hours before Clayton’s scheduled confirmation hearing, said that he would keep Pulte as acting DNI. Democratic and Republican lawmakers had opposed Trump’s selection of Pulte, citing his lack of known experience in intelligence and his use of his current administration perch to target perceived adversaries of the president — resistance that last week forced Trump to turn to Clayton. Cotton, of Arkansas, followed up by saying he would hold the hearing unless Trump orders Clayton not to appear or withdraws the nomination. Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Sen. National security officials across both major political parties have for years described Section 702 as vital for gathering intelligence that can disrupt terror attacks and espionage operations, though some lawmakers and civil liberties advocates have raised concerns over the government’s use of information about Americans that is incidentally collected through the program.Clayton had been set to appear on Wednesday afternoon for a Senate confirmation hearing that was fast-tracked because of the program’s lapse. Democrats had said they would not renew the expired surveillance programs until Trump withdrew the selection of Pulte.Trump’s post suggested that debate to revive Section 702 could be indefinitely postponed. Lawmakers have sounded the alarm about the government operating without congressional authorization of the powerful spy tool. A court order from last March certified that the program could continue for another 12 months, though it’s possible that communications companies could challenge the government’s authority to force them to cooperate and share data. In his social media post, Trump accused Democrats of breaking a deal to renew the program after he nominated Clayton. Trump also said he does not want to remove Clayton from his current position as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York before his replacement, James McDonald, is approved. McDonald was named to the Justice Department post on Saturday. APNEWS.COMLionel Messi ties men’s World Cup goals record with a hat trick as Argentina tops AlgeriaArgentina's Lionel Messi (10) celebrates after scoring the opening goal during the World Cup Group J soccer match between Argentina and Algeria in Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday, June 16, 2026. (AP Photo/Ed Zurga)2026-06-17T01:37:11Z KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lionel Messi used the front of his white-and-blue, sweat-soaked jersey to wipe the tears from his eyes, a flood of emotions cracking his usually calm, confident demeanor after he gave Argentina an early lead in its World Cup opener against Algeria. Then he scored again. And again.Suddenly, any questions about Messi’s hamstring injury, or whether he could help Argentina become the third team to win consecutive World Cups — even as his 39th birthday approaches next week — had been answered. With a brilliant hat trick in a 3-0 win over Les Fennecs, Messi moved into a tie with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the career scoring record at the men’s World Cup. Read More Go inside the neighborhood soccer club where Messi’s magic began “My tears after the first goal? I’ve had some tough days. It wasn’t related to football. And those feelings were because of that,” Messi said afterward, without elaborating. “I thank my teammates, the coaching staff and the delegation for helping me.” Messi scored that emotional first goal in the opening minutes on a nifty feed from Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul, the second off an opportunistic rebound early in the second half, and the third on a crisp strike moments before subbing out to a standing ovation from a crowd of 69,045 tilted heavily toward the three-time World Cup champions.“At a loss for words about Leo. What can I say?” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. “He’s incredible.” Read More Messi has starred in the World Cup for two decadesHis incredible trio of goals came 20 years to the day that Messi made his World Cup debut in a match against Serbia and Montenegro — he scored in that one, too — and made the pride of Rosario only the second player to score in five editions of the men’s tournament. The hat trick was the 61st of Messi’s career, his 11th while playing in his national team colors and his first in the World Cup. It also was the fifth straight World Cup game in which Messi has scored.“It makes me very happy to have lived through everything that came my way. What I’m living though now is the cherry on top,” Messi said. “I’m very happy an grateful for this wonderful group. I enjoy it so much.”Messi upstaged two of soccer’s other stars — Kylian Mbappé of France and Erling Haaland of Norway — who had big games of their own on Tuesday. Mbappé scored twice in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal to move into a tie for fourth on the men’s World Cup goals list with 14, while Haaland scored twice for Norway in its 4-1 victory over Iraq.“Messi is a madman,” Haaland said in a post on Snapchat during Argentina’s game.Shaking off injury, Messi remains Argentina’s engineMessi had been dealing with a minor hamstring injury with Inter Miami that slowed him in the lead-up to the World Cup. But the eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, which honors global soccer’s best player, had no problems in a tuneup last week with Iceland, scoring on a penalty kick while playing 20 minutes in a sharp performance. And much as it has the rest of the world, Messi-mania has swept through the area ever since La Albiceleste’s arrival in the Heartland about two weeks ago.On match day, thousands of fans wearing his No. 10 jersey trekked into the home of the NFL’s Chiefs on the outskirts of Kansas City, singing odes to their hero. Meanwhile, during a watch party at the downtown Power & Light District, a goat accompanied by former NFL quarterback-turned Fox broadcaster Jameis Winston came on stage wearing an Argentina jersey. The humorous moment seemed to have foreshadowed a big night for Messi when he scored an hour later, and the argument that he’s soccer’s GOAT — the greatest of all time — is becoming no argument at all with every match he plays.“It’s an advantage to have Leo because of how he handles the group and pushes it forward. APNEWS.COM1 killed when small plane crashes on Texas highway. People leave vehicles to try to helpA passenger, top, jumps out of a plane after it crashed on a highway as other people help Tuesday, June 16, 2026, in Laredo, Texas. (Zayra Garza via AP)2026-06-17T04:05:51Z A business jet with six people on board crashed on a highway in Laredo, Texas, and caught fire Tuesday night, authorities said, killing one person and causing chaos as people left their vehicles to frantically try to smash the cockpit window and free those inside.Drivers who came upon the burning plane, which was nearly sheared in half and tipped on its side, captured dramatic rescue scenes on video or rushed toward the aircraft on foot to help. Two people came running with a sledgehammer and shovel, which they used to strike the cockpit glass and try propping open the plane’s door. The plane crashed on the Loop 20 highway near the Texas-Mexico border shortly after 10 p.m., said Jose Baeza, an investigator with the Laredo Police Department. He said one person on the plane died in the crash. A person in a car struck by the plane was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Dashcam footage posted on social media showed the aircraft careening down the highway, taking out a light post before coming to a stop. It came to a rest not far from the Laredo International Airport. “It looked like part of a movie. I was in shock,” said Zayra Garza, an esthetician who was driving her co-workers home when she came upon the crash. No injuries on the ground were immediately reported, though five officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The plane, a Cessna Citation Latitude twin jet, departed Tuesday evening from San José del Cabo in Mexico and was bound for Austin, Texas, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. Read More It’s not clear what caused the crash as it reached Laredo, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of San Antonio. Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez told KGNS TV in Laredo that the plane experienced a mechanical failure. He provided no details. Video posted to social media showed the plane on its side, smashed into a highway barrier. The tail was ripped from the fuselage and laying mostly intact on a lower-level road beneath where the rescue was taking place. Garza began shooting video as she approached the scene and then stopped her vehicle across from the crippled jet, which was on fire. She saw someone inside the plane trying to break the cockpit window to escape. Soon, people got out of their vehicles to try to smash the window from the outside as the fire on the fuselage continues to burn.Garza’s husband jumped out of their vehicle to help and Garza then saw the door of the plane open. She said three people who looked to be teenagers rushed out, followed by someone who appeared to be a pilot. Another member of the crew tried to pull out a person who seemed to be unconscious. As smoke billowed from the plane, a firefighter used a small ladder to climb into the aircraft to rescue the remaining passenger, while others shot water out of a hose at the wreckage. Rescuers can be heard calling for a rope as others use rods to hold up the plane door.Several times, officers helping prop open the door dart away from the plane and double over in coughing fits because of the intense smoke. “What was worrying me was the fire,” she said. “I was concerned that it could have just exploded at any time.”This was the third significant aviation accident in as many days. A B-52 crashed Monday during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California and killed all eight people aboard, while on Sunday, 12 people were killed when a plane on a skydiving outing in Missouri crashed.NetJets said in a statement that the crash involved one of its aircraft and it is working with authorities. APNEWS.COMZelenskyy says G7 leaders pledge more vital help for Ukraine against RussiaUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attends the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Tuesday, June 16, 2026. (AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda)2026-06-17T10:08:17Z KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday his country has won key pledges of further support from world leaders in defending itself from Russia’s full-scale invasion, now in its fifth year.Leaders attending the Group of Seven summit in France promised to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and ensure its energy supply, as well as step up international economic pressure on Moscow.“The G7 Summit in France delivered important results for Ukraine. Most importantly, we agreed on additional strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense,” Zelenskyy, who attended the gathering, said on X. “Our partners will ensure support for our defense and energy resilience,” he said, adding they will also introduce new sanctions on Russia.Zelenskyy has spent a lot of time since the war began in 2022 trying to secure international support and isolate Russian President Vladimir Putin diplomatically. Zelenskyy was expected at a European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday. Ukraine on Monday officially started its EU membership negotiations, launching a process that could take years even as it fights Russia. The Iran war has distracted Washington from its largely fruitless effort to end the fighting in Ukraine, and Zelenskyy sought to engage with U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 gathering where key European leaders were also present.Putin has tried to cut out Europe and Kyiv and negotiate Ukraine’s future directly with Washington. Read More G7 leaders praise Ukraine’s battlefield progressThe leaders of Japan, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Canada and the U.S. threw their support behind Ukraine in a joint statement published overnight.“We commend Ukraine for its resilience and progress on the battlefield in recent months and emphasize there is now a new momentum” in Kyiv’s resistance, it said.Ukraine’s performance against Russia’s bigger army has improved markedly in recent months, Western officials and analysts say.High-tech Ukrainian drones are pinning down Russian troops on the front line, choking Russian supply lines in occupied regions of Ukraine and disrupting oil production deep inside Russia that provides vital revenue for Moscow. That has made the war, which Moscow refers to as a “special military operation,” more visible to Russians and increased pressure on Putin. But Ukraine is short of U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles, in part because of American stocks being depleted by the Middle East conflict, leaving it vulnerable to Russia’s ballistic missiles. The G7 statement promised Ukraine more air defense capabilities, without specifying what type of weapons. The leaders also said they would consider granting Ukraine licenses for it to manufacture Western weapons. Kyiv has asked for permits to make Patriot missiles itself. The summit outcome shows that G7 backing for Ukraine is “as strong as seldom before” and sends a clear signal to Moscow, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said. Russia says Ukraine attacked a children’s bus but Kyiv denies itIn Russia’s Bryansk region, which borders both Ukraine and Belarus, Gov. Egor Kovalchuk said a Ukrainian drone struck a bus carrying a children’s soccer team. A woman among the 44 passengers, which authorities said included 28 children, was killed, according to Kovalchuk. Six people, including four children, were wounded as the bus returned to Russia from Belarus, he said. But Ukraine’s General Staff dismissed the Russian allegation, calling it a “fabrication,” and saying its forces did not conduct drone operations in the Bryansk region at the time. Its statement reiterated that soldiers aim only at military targets. In other attacks reported Wednesday, a Russian drone struck an equestrian sports school for children in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, hitting a stable and killing horses, a regional official said.Staff at the school were not hurt in the nighttime attack, according to preliminary information, said Oleh Hryhorov of the Sumy regional military administration.Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said that air defenses downed 157 Ukrainian drones from late Tuesday until early Wednesday. ___AP reporters Illia Novikov in Kyiv, Ukraine, and Barry Hatton in Lisbon, Portugal, contributed.___Follow the AP’s coverage of the war in Ukraine at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine HANNA ARHIROVA Arhirova is an Associated Press reporter covering Ukraine. (AP Photo/Angelina Katsanis, Pool)2026-06-17T13:58:52Z NEW YORK (AP) — Luigi Mangione will assert a psychiatric defense at his state murder trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a judge said Wednesday.Judge Gregory Carro said Mangione’s lawyers have informed him they will attempt to show that he was suffering from “extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the occurrence.”By asserting a psychiatric defense, Mangione would effectively be admitting that he killed Thompson but did so because of mitigating circumstances. If a jury finds that Mangione was emotionally disturbed at the time of the killing, it could convict him of manslaughter instead of murder, meaning he’d be sentenced to less time in prison. It is not the same as a not guilty by reason of insanity defense, which would allow a defendant to go to a psychiatric facility instead of prison.Carro’s ruling came two weeks after he held a secret hearing on the matter at the request of the defense. He said he will unseal records pertaining to the hearing and the defense’s move for a psychiatric defense. “The reasons for the sealing was to give the defense an opportunity to determine whether they were going forth with that defense and the nature of that defense,” Carro said. Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, said unsealing the transcript of the secret hearing and materials related to his psychiatric defense will harm him in his federal case. Read More “The reason why we asked for the sealing is that this defense is not available federally and Mr. Mangione is being prosecuted federally and this is prejudicial to his defense to the exact same facts,” Friedman Agnifilo said. The judge had been set to rule on the matter on Tuesday, but delayed it a day because prosecutors failed to inform Mangione’s jail that he was needed in court.Mangione sat between his lawyers wearing a blue suit and a light-colored button-down shirt. He is set to go to trial on Sept. 8. Mangione, 28, has pleaded not guilty to state and federal charges in the Dec. 4, 2024, killing. His federal trial, which involves stalking charges, is set to begin on Oct. 13. He could spend his life in prison if convicted in either case. Thompson, 50, was killed as he walked to a Manhattan hotel for UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference. Surveillance video showed a masked gunman shooting him from behind. Police say “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were written on the ammunition, mimicking a phrase used to describe how insurers avoid paying claims.Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from a wealthy Maryland family, was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 230 miles (about 370 kilometers) west of Manhattan. At a May 18 hearing, Carro ruled that a gun and notebook that prosecutors say link Mangione to the killing can be used as evidence against him.The gun, a 3D-printed pistol, matches the one used to kill Thompson, prosecutors said. The notebook describes wanting to “wack” a health insurance executive and rebelling against “the deadly, greed fueled health insurance cartel.” Also Wednesday, Carro dismissed a charge related to a gun magazine that he had ruled inadmissible because it was found during an initial search of Mangione’s backpack at the McDonald’s.__This story has been corrected to show that Mangione could receive less prison time as a result of a conviction using this defense, not be sent to a psychiatric facility. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFormer Houston RHP Connor Udland commits to Arkansas baseball as transferFor the second consecutive day, Arkansas baseball has landed a projectable righty out of the transfer portal who just wrapped up his freshman season.Houston's Connor Udland committed to the Razorbacks on Wednesday, June 17. Arkansas secured the commitment of Central Michigan's Luke Neiswonger on Tuesday, June 16.Udland made seven starts and went 3-3 with a 5.87 ERA for the Cougars in 2026. He struck out 44 batters in 38⅓ innings and issued 22 walks. He began the year as a midweek starter before earning innings in Big 12 action. The Texas native rotated between starter and reliever during the conference slate. He had some hiccups toward the end of the year, but he was still one of the key pieces on the Cougars' pitching staff as a freshman. According to Perfect Game, Udland's fastball sits in the low 90s. He has two different breaking balls and uses them both with his 6-foot-4 frame. The other five pitchers Arkansas has landed thus far through the portal are Neiswonger, Brayden Krenzel (Tennessee), Ridge Harvey (Belmont), Micah Henson (Crowder College) and Lance Alexander (Johnson County Community College). The Hogs are still searching for a bona fide weekend starter out of the portal. Neiswonger is an option, but Arkansas needs to add at least one pitcher who will come in and immediately compete for innings in the SEC rotation. Cole Gibler will return as another option, and Arkansas is awaiting clarification on Carson Wiggins future as the redshirt sophomore is eligible for the 2026 MLB Draft despite missing the most recent spring recovering from Tommy John Surgery. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBlue Jays-Red Sox trade idea has Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer problemBlue Jays-Red Sox trade idea has Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer problem originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Toronto Blue Jays have fought their way back into the postseason mix. Even with a losing record, the Blue Jays should emerge as buyers before this year's trade deadline unless something goes catastrophically wrong. They have Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer as their main first base and designated hitter options, so the AL East club being tabbed as a landing spot for a slugger from the AL East is confusing. ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel wrote Wednesday that Toronto could target Willson Contreras from the Boston Red Sox despite the presence of Guerrero and Springer. However, Contreras was given just a 25% chance of being traded this season by the Red Sox. The three-time All-Star also has a no-trade clause in his contract. "Contreras has been highly productive in Boston, thriving at Fenway Park -- where he has an OPS over 1.000 -- and mashing on the road," Passan and McDaniel wrote."Since he has been so good offensively for a team that has been so bad, trading him when he has two very reasonable years left on his deal and when the Red Sox intend to compete in the coming years gives them pause." MORE: 1 year later, new Rafael Devers trade rumors have arrivedAs detailed, the Red Sox may pump the brakes on trading away Contreras, even with how bad their season has gone. Even if the Blue Jays did acquire him, where would he play, and when? Springer would have to accept a regular role back in the outfield, and Guerrero would have to agree to split time at first. Contreras is no longer a reliable option at catcher, and Alejandro Kirk's defense is too good for that to even be a discussion. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFSU among three finalists for top safety targetThe FSU Seminoles have made several big additions to their 2027 recruiting class in June, and they are in the hunt for several more top targets. Their highest-rated target is four-star safety Ta'Shawn Poole, and they received some good news on Tuesday. Poole announced that he was down to three schools, and the Seminoles made the cut. They are battling the Tennessee Volunteers and Georgia Bulldogs for him, with a commitment coming "soon."While FSU and Tennessee have been recruiting him the longest, he is from Macon, Georgia, and the Bulldogs can not be taken lightly. APNEWS.COMTrump’s pick to lead FEMA pledges to be ‘fair and reasonable’ in assessing disaster aid requestsCameron Hamilton sworn during a Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing to examine his nomination to be Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, on Capitol Hill in Washington. (AP Photo/Mariam Zuhaib)2026-06-17T12:30:31Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Cameron Hamilton, President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Federal Emergency Management Agency, pledged to senators Wednesday to be “fair and reasonable” in assessing requests for disaster aid as he seeks to run an agency roiled by the administration’s threats to dismantle it.Hamilton led FEMA briefly last year until he was fired after defending its existence. His nomination comes as the Republican administration has increasingly signaled it is backing away from promises to dismantle an agency that has been heavily criticized by the president. Hamilton was named temporary head in January 2025, just days before the president floated the idea of “getting rid” of FEMA. Hamilton had never been a state or local emergency management director and had himself publicly criticized FEMA in the past.Once on the job, he said he was concerned about threats to abolish the agency. At a House hearing last year, he said he did not “believe it is in the best interest of the American people to eliminate” FEMA. He was fired the next day. “My focus will be to ensure that FEMA is objective, is fair and reasonable, follows the law, and is consistent” in how it reviews disaster declaration requests, Hamilton told Michigan Sen. Gary Peters, the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Peters had asked about partisanship in granting major disaster declarations. Hamilton, who did not give an opening statement, was one of 10 nominees being considering by the committee. Among the others were Trump’s pick for deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, Hal Duncan, and administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, David Cummins. Read More Peters criticized the committee chairman, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., for scheduling so many nominees at once, saying that made it more difficult for senators to properly screen them. “The lineup today severely limits our ability to have transparency for the American public,” Peters said. He noted that Hamilton was among two nominees whose FBI background investigations were not yet complete, and that two others had not submitted their financial disclosure reports.Paul said the committee would only vote on the nominees when their financial and background checks were complete. If confirmed, Hamilton would be the principal adviser to Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on emergency management. FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. He would be FEMA’s first permanent administrator in Trump’s second term. The agency has gone through four temporary leaders, including Hamilton’s brief tenure from in 2025 from January to May.Hamilton would take over an agency still reeling from Kristi Noem’s turbulent leadership at DHS. FEMA’s workforce has been worn down by mass staff departures, policies that hamstrung operations and a protracted DHS shutdown.Hamilton will need to ensure that FEMA is prepared for summer disaster season, while answering to Trump, who is likely to expect major changes after a council he appointed recommended sweeping moves at the agency. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 1 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCape Verde star goalkeeper Vozinha's mother gets visa to attend next World Cup matchThe mother of Cape Verde star goalkeeper Vozinha has been granted a visa to enter the United States in time for her 40-year-old son's next World Cup match, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Wednesday.Vozinha became an early sensation of the World Cup after making key saves in a 0-0 draw with Spain, one of the tournament favorites that was expected to rout tiny Cape Verde. After the match, Vozinha said his mother had not been able to secure a visa to enter the U.S. to see him play.Jeffries said he spoke to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and “asked the State Department to do everything in their power to ensure that his mother can attend Cabo Verde’s next match.”Jeffries said all fees have been waived and travel arrangements are being made to get her to Cape Verde's next game Sunday against Uruguay in Miami.“I thank Secretary Rubio, U.S. State Department officials, the government of Cabo Verde and FIFA for working together to make this possible,” Jeffries said.Vozinha made seven saves against Spain as Cape Verde delivered a stunning World Cup debut. Afterward, Vozinha said his mother had been unable to gather the money in time to secure a visa to enter the U.S.Cape Verde is among 50 countries whose citizens face bonds of up to $15,000 to secure a U.S. visa, part of President Donald Trump’s broader crackdown on travelers from countries that officials said had high rates of visa overstays. The Trump administration last month suspended the requirement for ticket-holders from Cape Verde and four other World Cup nations, but critics said it was too late for many fans. The State Department had said it had no record of her ever applying for a visa, but that it was working on resolving the situation with Cape Verde authorities. The department said it had notified all players from World Cup countries affected by the $15,000 visa bond requirement that they and their families would be exempt from posting the bond.A person familiar with the situation said that the State Department believes that Vozinha’s mother did not apply for a visa because she did not hold a valid Cape Verde passport, but that she is now in the process of getting one.The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential visa deliberations.___AP Diplomatic Writer Matthew Lee contributed reporting from Washington.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

There, the current and past Blue Devils combined to draft and coach a roster for a basketball tournament. During this time, current Duke guard Cayden Boozer had the chance to team up with a former NCAA champion, Quinn Cook.Cook later admitted in a video that he chose Boozer as one of his coaches to mentor the young guard. Cook also said that with many returning players, he expects Boozer and Caleb Foster to be leaders next season. A four-year Blue Devil point guard and a two-time All-ACC selection, Cook is the right guy to be around Boozer. He also had plenty of NBA experience, winning two championships in five seasons. There he was able to play with some of the best players in league history, winning a title with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors as well as LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, heading into his sophomore season, many are hopeful that Boozer can take what he learned from Cook and progress into one of the strongest guards in the ACC.This article originally appeared on Duke Wire: Former Duke alum mentors Cayden Boozer ahead of sophomore season0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAlex Pereira surprised by Jon Jones’ reaction to his lossAlex Pereira wasn’t expecting the reaction that Jon Jones had to his loss against Ciryl Gane. Pereira faced Gane for the interim heavyweight title at UFC White House last weekend. Gane hurt Pereira in the second round and finished him on the feet, albeit not without the controversy of some illegal blows. Jones reacted to Pereira’s loss by posting a video of himself wearing a GOAT necklace, signifying the greatest fighter of all time. Pereira was admittedly surprised by Jones’ reaction to his loss. Pereira doesn’t understand why Jones chose to kick him while he was down. Pereira also notes that he had never shown anything but respect towards “Bones.” Despite the reaction, “Poatan” claims he will continue being a fan of Jones.A Confusing Reaction “To be honest, I was very surprised,” Pereira said on YouTube. “If I was one of the guys that provoked him, then lose, and then he goes and says something, I’d understand. But I’ve never spoken bad about Jon Jones. I’ve always respected… For real, I don’t understand why he did that. In a moment so difficult, he decided to provoke someone who’s never provoked him. Look at the difference. When he was going through a difficult time, I sent him support… Even with all this I’ll not stop being a fan of him. I’ve always spoken well about him.” Pereira (13-4) and Jones (28-1) have been respectful towards each other in the past. Pereira had even0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση -
WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMIan McKellan shares hilarious way he channeled anger at Trump into his role as an Avengers villainIan McKellen channeled his fury at Trump into archvillain role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Iconic out actor Ian McKellen says he shouted “Mar-a-Lago” to get into his character’s destructive headspace while filming Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The latest installment in Marvel’s cinematic universe, due out in December, sees the 87-year-old Oscar nominee reprising his role as X-Men archvillain Magneto. While filming a scene in which his character destroys all of New Jersey, McKellen told The Guardian that directors Anthony and Joe Russo told him “to look more furious.” Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Related Ian McKellen said an iconic “Star Wars” actor discouraged him from supporting gay rights The actor and long-time LGBTQ+ rights advocate recalled the Russos telling him to “Make it look as if you hate what you’re destroying.” “So, I stood there, and I shouted: ‘Mar-a-Lago!’” McKellen told the outlet, referring to President Donald Trump’s Palm Beach, Florida, resort. McKellen has been involved in LGBTQ+ rights advocacy since the late 1980s, when he came out publicly in part as a reaction to Section 28, a proposed law later passed by Margaret Thatcher’s conservative government that banned the “promotion” of homosexuality. McKellen has also been a vocal critic of Trump. During the president’s first term in office, the actor criticized the administration’s refusal to recognize Pride Month and Trump’s formal rescission of President Obama’s Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order in 2017. “It’s appalling and quite unnecessary and very un-American,” McKellen told Variety at the time. McKellen also spoke about channeling his antipathy for Trump on the set of Avengers: Doomsday during a February appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “So, I’m standing up, pretending to [destroy New Jersey], and the wind is blowing in my hair, and I’m putting on a fierce look, and I’m trying to be magnetic. And the director, over the loudspeaker, says, ‘Ian, look more furious!’” McKellen said, while demonstrating his Magneto fury. “He said, ‘Shout the worst thing you can possibly think of!’ So, I said, ‘Mar-a-Lago!’” “Will I be allowed back in the country?” McKellen joked. “No guarantees. I don’t think I’m the right person to ask for that,” said Colbert, whose canceled show has been viewed, at least in part, as retaliation for his own criticism of Trump and CBS parent company Paramount Skydance owner David Ellison’s ties to the administration. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Lionel Messi Was in Tears During World Cup GameLionel Messi is seen on September 21, 2024 in New York City. - Gotham/GC ImagesLionel Messi scored the first goal for Argentina in the team’s World Cup game against Algeria on June 17, and he was noticeably overcome with emotion after the special moment. In fact, Messi was seen wiping away tears on the field following his first of three goals in Argentina’s 3-0 win.Afterwards, Messi explained his unexpected reaction. “Why did I cry? It was something completely unrelated to football,” Messi shared. “I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it.”Messi did not specify what happened during his “difficult” days leading up to the match.Scoring three times on Tuesday brings Messi’s total World Cup goals up to 16, which means he’s tied at the top of the list for all-time World Cup goals (Miroslav Klose also has 16.) Argentina still has two games left in the Group Stage of this year’s tournament (on June 22 against Austria and June 27 against Jordan), so Messi definitely has time to score one more time to put himself at the top of the list. And while he said it’s an “honor” to be on that list, Messi is not focused on the record. “In the end, it is statistics and nothing more,” he pointed out. “It is a source of pride to be able to compete with all of them, but it means nothing. For me, Ronaldo, from what I saw, was one of the greatest, and he is not first, so it stays as only a statistic.” Related Test Your World Cup Knowledge With These Brainteasers (QUIZ)He also noted, “I was lucky to achieve all my dreams and even more than I could have imagined, individually and as a group. Today I’m enjoying this. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFery beats Mannarino to reach Queen's quarter-finalsArthur Fery has a wildcard to play in the men's singles at Wimbledon [Getty Images]British number five Arthur Fery produced a superb display to beat Adrian Mannarino and keep home hopes alive in the HSBC Championships at Queen's.The world number 140 reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final with a 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 victory over the veteran Frenchman. The 23-year-old wildcard needed treatment for a nosebleed at the start of the second set but kept his focus to wrap up victory on Andy Murray Arena.Fery, who was ranked 461 when he upset 20th seed Alexei Popyrin on the opening day of last year's Wimbledon, was the last Briton left in singles after Cameron Norrie lost to fourth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday."It's special to be playing in London where I grew up and in front of all these British tennis fans," the British number five told BBC Sport."This is the best result of my career so far. It's not been easy, there have been lots of ups and downs, but I always try to put my best foot forward every match and try to improve."Fery started confidently by breaking Mannarino's serve at the first attempt but the 37-year-old Frenchman fought back from 3-0 down to take the opening set to a tie-break.An eye-catching cross-court backhand pass and two superb volleys at full stretch - celebrated with a crowd-energising fist-pump - helped Fery move to set point.World number 44 Mannarino saved it but Fery kept his nerve to force an error that secured the set. After a medical timeout to stop his nose bleeding, Fery maintained his standards in the second set and broke Mannarino in the ninth game with a blistering forehand.Fery, who beat fellow Briton Toby Samuel in the first round, then held his serve to complete victory. He will face either seventh seed Francisco Cerundolo or Jenson Brooksby in the last eight.Former British number one John Lloyd, commentating on the match for the BBC, was impressed by Fery's performance."I see no reason why he can't be top 50," he said."He's quick, nasty to play against, he moves well, isn't afraid to change it up with the slice, and he likes the big stage."Meanwhile, top seed Alex de Minaur of Australia secured his place in the quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-1 win over Canada's Denis Shapovalov.Norrie beaten at Queen's on injury returnLive scores, results and order of playGet tennis news sent straight to your phone0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy isn't JC Latham at Titans minicamp? Robert Saleh updatesTennessee Titans coach Robert Saleh explained why starting right tackle JC Latham is absent from Titans mandatory minicamp, and he doesn't seem overly concerned about the absence.Latham is dealing with a minor injury and the Titans are holding him out of practice for precaution. "Yeah, he's dealing with something," Saleh said in a short response when asked about Latham.Latham is the only major Titans contributor who wasn't on the field for the first day of mandatory minicamp on June 16. Veterans like Jeffery Simmons and John Franklin-Myers made their first appearance in pads for a practice open to media, but both were limited in how many on-field reps they took. For the most part, the Titans are opting to ease young players and experienced players alike into the offseason program as to not over-exert players during a time of year that Saleh has been adamant doesn't matter very much to his evaluation. One example is the way the Titans have treated first-round pick Carnell Tate, who missed one day of practice with a minor injury out of extreme caution but was back on the field two days later.Latham was the Titans' first-round pick in 2024. He started at left tackle as a rookie before bumping back to the right side, his natural position from college, in 2025. Latham missed time in 2025 with a hip injury initially sustained during training camp that lingered into the early months of the season. Across two years with the Titans, Latham has appeared in and started 30 games.Jeffery Simmons injury updateJeffery Simmons also has a minor injury he's working through, Saleh said."He's dealing with a couple of things," Saleh told Nashville reporters on June 17.Saleh's plan for Simmons in 2027 is to reduce the number of defensive snaps in an effort to get the best of him when he is on the field."If there is a 60-play game and Jeffery plays 40 of them, the hope is that it's 40 passes. That's the goal."Saleh clarified that Simmons is also a good run defender, but the goal is to get him on passing situations where he can be 1-on-1 on third down and two-minute situations.Femi Oladejo injury updateFemi Oladejo hasn't been on the field during minicamp as he continues to be "nursing an injury."Nick Suss is the Titans beat writer for The Tennessean. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMESPN Analyst Calls Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade 'Worth The Risk' For CelticsESPN Analyst Calls Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade 'Worth The Risk' For Celtics originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The NBA hot stove is burning with Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors. Although it would require a significant roster shakeup, the Boston Celtics remain linked to a potential blockbuster for the Milwaukee Bucks superstar. Some fans may question whether the Celtics should blow up their current roster, especially if it means breaking up the championship-winning duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. An ESPN analyst made the case for Boston rolling the dice on Antetokounmpo anyway. On Wednesday morning, a day after Jay Williams garnered headlines with a dubious claim about Brown, "Get Up" continued to debate whether the Celtics should pursue Antetokounmpo. Vincent Goodwill explained why he would try to acquire the two-time MVP."If I'm the Boston Celtics, and I haven't won a championship in a couple of years, and I've been shooting all these threes. Bringing Giannis in, if I could fit him into what I do, I think that would be the perfect sort of fit," Goodwill said.Goodwill could see the Celtics enduring some rough patches next season if they reassemble their roster around the "Greek Freak." However, the senior writer believes Antetokounmpo has multiple peak years left."It takes a year to get your stuff together," Goodwill said. "It takes a year for you to lose, and then you go up like a rocket ... Do you have two years with Giannis? I say you have three with Giannis at this level. He's 31 right now. The miles are starting to add up."Given that claim, it's a bit curious that Goodwill likened Giannis to a Hall of Famer who won a title in his first season with the Celtics."Kevin Garnett is the person I always use as the comparison," Goodwill said. "But I think for the Celtics, he's worth the risk."According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Antetokounmpo would be open to discussing a contract extension if he got traded to Boston. However, the Celtics are reportedly "uncomfortable" working with his agents out of fear of details leaking to the public.Windhorst also noted that the Bucks have continued long-running talks with the Miami Heat, a reported favorite to land the 10-time All-Star.More NBA: Report: Celtics Looking For NBA Draft First-Round Trade Amid Giannis Antetokounmpo Rumors0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 2 Views 0 Προεπισκόπηση
