WNBA All-Star 2026: A'ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers lead fan voting after first returns; Caitlin Clark fifth
A’ja Wilson entered the 2026 season coming off her third WNBA championship and fourth WNBA MVP campaign. The Las Vegas Aces superstar forward has simply picked right up where she left off, averaging league-high 25.6 points per game this season, on pace for the second most of her W career, plus a W-best 2.2 blocks per contest. It’s only fitting that Wilson leads 2026 WNBA All-Star voting after the first fan returns, which the league announced on Wednesday. Already a seven-time All-Star, she’s piled up 308,249 votes. Second-year Dallas Wings standout guard Paige Bueckers isn’t far behind with 298,027 votes. Last season, Bueckers followed up a national championship at UConn by making her first WNBA All-Star team and then earning WNBA Rookie of the Year honors. Wilson and Bueckers are followed in the fan voting by three-time All-Star Indiana Fever center Aliyah Boston (282,186 votes) and seven-time All-Star New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart (255,879), who doubles as a two-time WNBA MVP. Two-time All-Star Fever guard Caitlin Clark (253,602) rounds out the top five.Last year, Clark — at the time not too far removed from her 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year season — was the leading vote-getter through the first fan returns. Here are the top-40 leaders in the first fan returns in this year’s WNBA All-Star voting:This story is being updated.

2026 Fantasy Football: Justin Boone's top sleeper picks at RB
Fantasy managers are smarter than ever, so finding a player who’s actually being slept on can be difficult. With that in mind, we’re shifting our focus to late-round targets who could drastically outproduce their ADP in 2026. Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL seasonOver the next week, I’ll shine the spotlight on my favorite sleeper candidates at every key fantasy position. Today, we’re taking a look at running backs.More Sleeper Picks from Boone: QB | RB | WR | TE Jonathon Brooks, PanthersBrooks was viewed as the future of Carolina’s backfield when the team selected him as a 21-year-old in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Had it not been for an ACL tear in his final college season, Brooks may have gone in Round 1. Even though Brooks was recovering from the serious knee injury, the expectation was that he could eventually emerge as a three-down back as early as the stretch run of his rookie season. However, his return only lasted three games before suffering another ACL tear, which has sidelined him ever since. That brief glimpse of him in NFL action included a nine-touch, 41-yard outing in Week 13 while playing just 21% of the snaps. He also flashed his versatile skillset with 23 of those yards coming on three receptions. Now, after missing the entire 2025 campaign, Brooks is back at practice and expected to be a significant part of the Panthers’ ground game in 2026 — alongside Chuba Hubbard. The 27-year-old Hubbard is just one season removed from a 1,366-yard, 11-touchdown season that made him the RB12 in fantasy points per game. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to repeat those numbers in 2025. Hubbard battled injuries and tougher competition for touches with Rico Dowdle stealing the starting job halfway through the year. While Hubbard remains the favorite to open the year as the lead back, it’s easy to envision Brooks eating into his workload and usurping him on the depth chart during the season. Even baking in the uncertainty around whether Brooks can regain his pre-injury form, there’s almost zero risk involved for fantasy managers who want to draft him this year — with Brooks going off the board outside the top-100 picks as the RB37 in ADP. I’m valuing Brooks as a high-upside sleeper and potential RB3/flex option, with a chance to emerge as a fantasy RB2 by the end of the season.Jacory Croskey-Merritt, CommandersExpectations for seventh-round picks are normally very low, with their main goal being just to make the team. By that measure, Croskey-Merritt had a strong rookie season last year, though it felt like he didn’t capitalize enough on his opportunities. Brian Robinson Jr. being traded before Week 1 and Austin Ekeler suffering a season-ending injury, left a three-man committee with JCM, Chris Rodriguez Jr. and Jeremy McNichols — which limited everyone’s fantasy ceiling. However, Rodriguez only topped 70 scrimmage yards twice and never went over 85 yards in a single game. McNichols was a distant third in terms of touches and production. Meanwhile, Croskey-Merritt went over 70 scrimmage yards four times, including twice during the final month. Fantasy managers will remember his contributions well, since he was the RB10 in fppg during the fantasy playoffs, topping 95 yards on two occasions and scoring four touchdowns over that stretch. He’ll carry that momentum over to this season as he tries to win the lead back job over pass-catching specialist Rachaad White and sixth-round power back Kaytron Allen. The coaching staff has made it clear that JCM needs to improve his contributions in the passing game if he’s going to consistently earn a larger role in the offense. While this could be a frustrating fantasy backfield to decipher week-to-week, there’s value to be had with all three Commanders’ RBs being chosen in the 10th round or later. Croskey-Merritt is the one I’m drafting most frequently, since he has the greatest potential to emerge as a difference-maker from this group after flashing that high-end production in December. Kenneth Gainwell, BuccaneersGainwell is fresh off an outstanding year in Pittsburgh, where he caught 73 balls for 486 yards and three touchdowns, while finishing the season with over 1,000 scrimmage yards and eight total TDs. More importantly, he proved himself capable of handling the starting job when called upon, which could come into play once again if Bucky Irving can’t overcome the durability issues that plagued him last season. In the four games where Gainwell saw at least 15 touches for the Steelers, he posted 134 yards and two TDs in the first, 105 yards in the second, 122 yards in the third and 126 yards in the fourth. If Irving misses time again, Gainwell will immediately be in the conversation as a top-15 fantasy back, while giving up a small amount of work to Sean Tucker. Initially, Gainwell will step into White’s former role as an overqualified No. 2 back with weekly RB3/flex potential thanks to his pass-catching prowess. But there’s a much higher ceiling waiting to be unlocked if Irving misses time or falters in any way.

Miami University Hamilton volleyball banking on youth, experience and new leadership entering 2026
HAMILTON — The Miami University Hamilton volleyball team is entering a fresh chapter in 2026.A new head coach, an influx of freshman talent and an expanded schedule have generated excitement around the Harriers program as it looks to continue building toward becoming a competitive force in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. The Harriers finished 4-11 during the 2025 season, but optimism is high as Amy Zecher takes over as head coach after serving as an assistant last year.Zecher brings more than 13 years of coaching experience at the club, middle school, high school and collegiate levels.During her first season at Miami Hamilton, she helped oversee player development, practice planning and recruiting efforts while helping secure a four-player freshman class that will immediately reshape the roster.Miami Hamilton athletic director Chris Settle said Zecher is the right person to guide the program’s future.“We are extremely excited to start a new era of volleyball here at Miami Hamilton under the leadership of our first-year coach Amy Zecher,” Settle said. “Amy has a wealth of experience, knowledge and contacts in the volleyball world and has hit the ground running with recruiting.”Settle added that Zecher’s understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities that come with a regional campus made her a natural fit for the position.“But even more than that, Amy is a great fit for Miami Hamilton,” Settle said. “Being a regional campus, things have to be done a certain way to be successful and she gets it. Spending last year as our assistant coach enabled her to see all the ins and outs of volleyball at our level so I am confident she can get us to our first USCAA national tournament for volleyball.”That recruiting effort has already paid dividends. The incoming freshman class includes Aurora Scroggins, a middle blocker from Southwestern High School in Hanover, Indiana; Payton Marshall, a setter and defensive specialist from Bishop Brossart in Burlington, Kentucky; Kaelyn Alexander, a defensive specialist from Edgewood; and Brilee Stone, a versatile outside hitter and setter from Lebanon. The group joins a returning core that gives Miami Hamilton a blend of youth and experience.Senior outside hitter Sarah Pyles returns as the roster’s lone senior. The Dayton native and East Dayton Christian graduate is expected to provide leadership both on and off the court as the Harriers navigate a season featuring four freshmen and only three upperclassmen.Junior middle blocker Myiah Morris, a 5-foot-10 West Carrollton graduate, returns as one of the team’s most experienced front-row players. Fellow junior Lillie Kluesner, a 5-foot-8 right-side hitter also from West Carrollton, provides additional experience and offensive versatility.Sophomore Avery Fritz, a 5-foot-7 outside hitter and right-side hitter from Conner in Hebron, Kentucky, rounds out the returning players and gives Miami Hamilton flexibility on the attack. The roster reflects one of Zecher’s primary goals — building a program capable of sustained growth through recruiting and player development. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes technical skills, volleyball IQ, leadership and personal growth. A former collegiate volleyball player, Zecher believes developing student-athletes extends beyond the court and into the classroom and community. That same philosophy has helped fuel her success as owner and girls club director of Cincy Storm Volleyball Club, where she has developed athletes who have gone on to compete at the collegiate level.Zecher will not be alone in leading the program’s next phase.Assistant coach Roy Felts joins the staff and brings additional experience and leadership to a program working to establish a stronger foundation for long-term success.Miami Hamilton’s commitment to growth is also reflected in its schedule. The Harriers have expanded their slate for the upcoming season and will face a challenging collection of opponents that includes Boyce College, Edison State, Kent State and defending USCAA national champion UC Clermont. The schedule is designed to expose the roster to higher levels of competition while preparing the Harriers for future postseason opportunities. Each match will serve as an opportunity for Miami Hamilton’s young roster to gain valuable experience against established programs. The combination of new leadership, an ambitious recruiting class and a demanding schedule has created excitement surrounding the program.“The goal is to continue moving this program forward every day,” Settle said. “With the players we have returning, the incoming class Amy has assembled and the culture we’re building, we believe the future is bright for Miami Hamilton volleyball.”

Marsha didn’t throw the first brick. A Stonewall veteran busts some myths.
Mark Segal was a witness to history and a participant on “just another night out” at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969. The soon-to-be activist was just 18 when he arrived in New York City a few weeks before from his hometown in Philadelphia. He discovered Greenwich Village not long after, and “nirvana.” Related Edmund White witnessed the Stonewall riots, just the beginning of a revolutionary life In the days, months, and years that followed the uprising against cops that night at the Christopher Street bar, Segal became a central figure in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. His latest project is curating the new Philly Pride Visitor Center, unveiled just in time for America 250 celebrations at the site of the nation’s founding. Segal dispensed with “Hello” when he picked up the phone for his interview with LGBTQ Nation and started right in with his own question. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today Mark Segal: Good afternoon, Greg. How are you doing? LGBTQ Nation: I’m well, Mark. How are you today? Overwhelmed by all of the Pride things. Mark Segal, publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News. | Jasper Colt / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images I know, it’s the season, right? It is the season, but it seems to get more and more crazy every year. But you know what, that’s a great thing. I remember when we did it once a year on one day, so that was back in 1970, and look at what’s happened since. Kind of wonderful. How old are you, Mark? I’m 75. I’m an old man. That makes it your Diamond Jubilee year. You know what? It’s really great, because if you consider the alternative, it’s not so great. I’m a very happy old man. You don’t sound so old. I have a feeling you sound exactly the same as you did back in 1970. So that’s an interesting point. I don’t know. The most important thing is, my husband says I’m still cute. That really counts. I’m a very lucky man in a place none of us back in 1969 expected, right? It’s all good. The last time I watched Drag Race was when RuPaul was going on about how “We were there,” and the reason it all happened was Judy Garland, which is my least favorite of the myths. That gets me real angry. I’d like to talk about some of the mythology around Stonewall and get your views as a participant and witness. Stonewall has been described by people both advancing LGBTQ+ rights and those attacking them differently and the same, depending on their motivation. On the attacking side, just a couple of weeks ago, a school board in Wisconsin canceled a performance because a piece of music that students were scheduled to perform honored trans icon Marsha P. Johnson, who one board member described as “a cross-dressing prostitute who threw a brick at a police officer at Stonewall.” Another said the music would inspire the same kind of “political violence” that Stonewall did. A statement from the board called Stonewall “a six-day riot, which included police officers and attempting to burn down a building with human beings trapped inside.” Some LGBTQ+ activists might agree with those characterizations and applaud them. So, let me get your take on some common assumptions or misconceptions about that night, and whether or not they’re true. Number one, was Stonewall “a riot,” and is that a pejorative, or a label to embrace? And if it wasn’t a riot, what do you call it? A revolution. Number two, true or false: Marsha P. Johnson threw the first brick. False. What are the facts around that? There was no brick. I mean, there are many myths about Stonewall, and one of them is, “Who threw the first brick?” Well, there was no first brick, and the people who are attributed to have been throwing the first brick say some very contradictory things themselves in recordings that have been made since that time. Primarily, the people attributed to the brick were Sylvia and Marsha, my sisters from Gay Liberation Front, and both of them said contradictory things years after that happened. Marsha said that she was uptown and was up there till 2:00 am in the morning, and Sylvia said she was part of it, but maybe she didn’t throw a brick. How long did the riot last? Good question. So when I’m asked that question, I say, well, on that evening alone, hours. But my true answer is 365 days, because right after the riot, we were out there every single night leafleting in one way or another. One night, we were out leafleting for maybe, “If you get arrested, this is where you can go. These are people you could see for your legal issues.” Another might be, “If you have medical issues and you’re afraid to talk to your own doctor, here are other people you can see.” Another was, “We’re angry gay people. We’re forming this new organization called Gay Liberation Front, and we would like you to join us. And here’s where we’re meeting.” These were revolutionary. Since before Stonewall, if you were out on Christopher Street, our gayborhood, and you stopped on a corner, and you started talking with a group of your friends, the police would come along and maybe say, “Move along, people like you are not allowed to congregate.” Here we were defying the police, not only congregating, but leafleting to organize our community directly in front of the police, basically taunting them. We also created social organizations. We created the first gay youth organization, we created the first trans organization, and if all of that were not enough, to celebrate the new community we created, and to mark the first anniversary of Stonewall, we created the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, which created the first gay Pride march. Not bad for one year. Another assumption or misconception: gay men led the uprising to the exclusion of trans people, or trans people led it, alienating gay men. Oh, I mean, that line has been around for years. The obvious thing to realize is there were two groups of people at Stonewall: one group comprised people who lived in the area, had good jobs in the area, and as soon as they got outside of Stonewall, you know, they ran for the subway, or to catch a taxi, or just to get out of the area. The group that remained was a mix of disenfranchised people, people like me, who had no vision of what their future would be, marginalized people, and young activists. We were a very mixed group, and that included people of color and trans people. I mean, it’s a riot. Does anyone take a roll call at a riot? It’s difficult to stand there in the middle of a riot and count different people moving around or being chased by police. Another assumption or misconception: rioters tried to kill cops. I think for the most part, LGBT people were defending themselves against the cops. Remember, the cops came in, brutalized the gay community inside a place we thought was safe, right? We were safeguarding ourselves. Unfortunately, the earlier reports of Stonewall were written by straight white guys who gave their own slant to it — in the Village Voice, by a white straight guy who just happened to be friendly with Inspector Pine, who led the raid. So, which side do you think he would be more sympathetic to? What was he doing there? Good question! In all these years, I never said that or thought that, even. That is great. Was he called beforehand? Good point. Last question on that topic. True or false, people died at Stonewall. No. Have you seen that great clip from Drag Race about their discussion of Stonewall? Luckily, no. Yeah, it’s one queen correcting another: “Nobody was killed at Stonewall.” It’s pretty funny. The last time I watched Drag Race was when RuPaul was going on about how “We were there,” and the reason it all happened was Judy Garland, which is my least favorite of the myths. That gets me real angry. You know, people of my generation didn’t really care about Judy Garland. We were into Barbra Streisand and listening to Let the Sunshine In by the 5th Dimension. That was our generation. Judy Garland wasn’t. I like to ask people, what the hell did Judy Garland ever do for our community? She wasn’t particularly proactive. (Laughing) No. Yeah, I mean, nobody knew about the riot anywhere in the nation. There were only like three reports of it, in The New York Times, The Village Voice. I mean, there were no news vans in those days, no radio covered it, no TV covered it. We were invisible, and even our riot was invisible, almost. What’s changed for the LGBTQ+ community since Stonewall, and what’s the pre-Stonewall era that Donald Trump and his supporters would like to return us to?Oh, that’s like 12 questions in one. What has changed? Well, before you called, I was on the phone talking to the people who are putting together the July 4 celebration in Philadelphia, and that will include a parade that will be passing by Independence Mall, with an LGBT float. Think about that. They are creating a float for the LGBT community to be part of America’s independence. And where? In front of the symbol of America, Independence Hall. I am so proud that my city and my state take our history, and their history as part of the LGBT movement, very seriously. Philadelphia became the first city, not only to hold LGBT demonstrations, but it’s also the first city to open a citywide LGBT Pride visitor center for LGBT tourists, and that was paid for by state money. Our state wanted LGBT people to feel comfortable and welcomed in Pennsylvania. That’s sort of amazing. What’s the era that Trump and his supporters would like to take us back to?Oh, they’d like to take us back to before 1969, and in that case, I could use my own example. I grew up in the late 50s and the early 60s, and when I grew up and realized who I was, I knew instinctively that I couldn’t tell my parents, I knew I couldn’t tell my friends, but I didn’t understand why. We had no internet, no social media. The only thing we had were TV, radio, magazines, and newspapers, and guess what? I couldn’t find out anything in any of those, so therefore I had one place to turn to, which was the public library. And when I went to the public library, I found five books. What did I discover? Let’s see, I found that in the psychological department, I was psychologically unsound. I found in the criminology department that I was probably a criminal. I learned in the religion department that I was probably not moral, and I learned basically that I would end up having a very lonely, sad life. That’s what this 13-year-old kid learned, and that was pretty upsetting. But for me, luckily — and I guess it was the way I was raised — I didn’t feel there was anything wrong with me. But I didn’t understand why society felt that way, and luckily for me, again, I saw a show on PBS late one night, and they had real live homosexuals on TV. They said they lived in a place called Greenwich Village in New York. So on May 10, 1969, when I graduated high school, I hightailed it to New York. Checked into the Sloane House YMCA on 34th Street, and that night went looking for people who were like me. I eventually found Christopher Street and nirvana. That began my education on who I was, and also who we were. I love the quote that’s on your website from a friend who said, “Mark was so busy helping to create the sexual revolution that he didn’t have time to participate.” Did you really have no time to get laid in the 1970s? And what were you missing out on in New York then if you didn’t? (Laughing) You know what? I think you just stumped me. I think that quote was from Mark Horn, who was a member of Gay Youth and is a member of the Gay Liberation Front Foundation. We talk very often. I mean, I’m very lucky that I have the LGBT friends that I’ve had for over 50 years, and most of them I grew up with. I was 18 years old when I got to New York, and the friends I didn’t have in high school? Well, then I got them. You famously zapped through this period, including crashing the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. There have been some satirical protests confronting Trump, like that video at the Housing and Urban Development headquarters of Trump caressing Elon Musk’s feet with the caption “Long live the real king.” And statues erected on the National Mall by Secret Handshake, which are pretty effective statements. None have been as far-reaching as some of your zaps. Do we need more protests like yours now, and what’s your advice for activists? I love you for this question. I think we need to get back to that form of activism. I was doing an interview about the gubernatorial race here in Pennsylvania, and someone asked me, “What’s the difference between a politician who’s an ally and an LGBT activist like yourself?” And I said, you know, I’m willing to chain myself to something and get arrested. They’re there to change policy. My purpose is to give visibility to the policy. Gay liberation’s motto was “Out loud and proud!” and I took that to mean we had to become more visible, because if you become more visible, you’re no longer that green-eyed monster in the closet. That’s what Gay Liberation Front started. And I’d like to believe that I took that a lot further along by disrupting the Today Show, The Tonight Show, and Walter’s show. We were able to be seen by millions of people. They might not like what I did, but they discussed it. Discussion brings education, and education eventually brings equality. How old were you when you came out? I came out to my mother when I was 18. I was living in New York. I had become president of Gay Youth, and I thought, gee, you know, might be a good thing to tell my parents what I’m doing. I guess they didn’t know you were at the riot. Yeah, I mean, nobody knew about the riot anywhere in the nation. There were only like three reports of it, in The New York Times, The Village Voice. I mean, there were no news vans in those days, no radio covered it, no TV covered it. We were invisible, and even our riot was invisible, almost. When do you think Stonewall became “historical,” in the sense that people started referring to it as a milestone in the history of LGBTQ+ rights? That’s difficult for me to say, because it’s always been in my life. But the first time I remember it being historical is when we created Stonewall 25. Yeah. That’s when I thought of it as historical to some extent. It still is difficult for me to process it being historical, you know, because for me it was just another night out, until it wasn’t. Lakers mega three-team trade pitch reunites Los Angeles with disrespected $186 million superstar
Lakers mega three-team trade pitch reunites Los Angeles with disrespected $186 million superstar originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Lakers, like every other NBA franchise, isn’t perfect. While they’ve made their fair share of reasonable decisions, they’ve also made plenty of mistakes over the years that they’ve faced backlash for. Failing to inform former superstar Anthony Davis that he was involved in trade talks involving Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks is one of them, and the 10-time All-Star made that clear during an in-season interview with Draymond Green. Essentially, Davis viewed the move as a sign of disrespect after giving his all to the Lakers for nearly six seasons. Shockingly, though, NBA insider Scoop B. Robinson believes Los Angeles could reunite with Davis this summer in a mega three-team trade and put the past behind them.“Executing a trade of this magnitude (No. 2 overall pick, Lauri Markkanen, Jarred Vanderbilt, Dalton Knecht and Lakers draft capital to the Washington Wizards, the No. 1 overall pick, Trae Young, Jake LaRavia, and Lakers draft capital to the Utah Jazz, and Anthony Davis, Ace Bailey, two 2027 Jazz second-round picks, and two 2026 Wizards second-round picks to the Lakers) requires immaculate spreadsheet discipline,’ Slater wrote Tuesday.“The foundational mechanism enabling the salaries to balance involves complex roster decisions elsewhere on the ledger, specifically requiring Deandre Ayton to opt out of his current contract structure while Marcus Smart opts into his remaining salary commitment.”Bringing Davis back to Los Angeles for another stint, frankly, only makes sense for the Lakers from a nostalgia standpoint. The 10-time All-Star helped the franchise win its 17th title in 2020 and had plenty of memorable individual performances alongside LeBron James in Los Angeles. However, the Kentucky product was far too injury-prone for Los Angeles’ liking, which led to them shipping him to the Mavericks for a 27-year-old point guard who’s now the clear face of their franchise. Dallas grew weary of Davis’ health struggles as well, which explains why he currently competes with the Wizards despite expectations that he would be a significant part of Dallas’ future. If the Lakers feel inclined to take a massive gamble with Davis, though, another surprising deal could materialize.More NBA news:Spurs predicted to outbid Warriors for $101 million Lakers star, four-time NBA championLakers predicted to outbid Warriors, Cavaliers, Spurs for $101 million star, four-time NBA championLuka Doncic sends clear message to Lakers on roster they can't afford to ignore

He would lift the Stanley Cup in 2023 after the Golden Knights defeated the Florida Panthers in five games.During the past three seasons, Craig would gain head coaching experience with the American Hockey League’s Silver Knights. What are key issues for Rangers and new manager McInnes?
Just a few weeks after missing out on the Scottish Premiership title with Hearts, Derek McInnes has taken on a new challenge at Rangers. He becomes the third manager or head coach in a year at Ibrox. In announcing his arrival, McInnes was designated the job title 'manager' by Rangers.Chairman Andrew Cavenagh promised a "summer of substantial change" in the wake of a disappointing 2025-26 season, but replacing Danny Rohl was not on his to-do list until RB Salzburg came calling. So what are the immediate tasks facing McInnes?'Real honour' as McInnes succeeds Rohl at Rangers'Atalanta eye Rangers' Raskin' - gossipImprove the mindsetAs Rangers' title challenge fizzled out last term, Rohl spoke repeatedly of the need to recruit "leaders".The German had earned plaudits for dragging his side back into a three-way tussle at the top but the squad's mentality came under the spotlight after a terrible post-split run in the Scottish Premiership.Rangers went into the final five games one point behind Hearts and two ahead of eventual champions Celtic, only to finish a distant third following four successive defeats and only one win, which came on the last day.Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland, whose move to Rangers was announced late last month, is a virtual guarantee of goals and the former Hearts skipper also provides valuable experience. The 30-year-old could be a candidate to instantly take the captaincy on following the Ibrox exit of James Tavernier. There is no doubt Rangers need a few more strong characters. Before the signing of Shankland, Cavenagh talked of cultivating a "pro-Scottish bias" at Ibrox and that should sit well with McInnes, who maintained a strong local core at Tynecastle amid a flurry of data-driven signings from across the globe.Bolster the defenceWith Tavernier gone, along with loan signings Nasser Djiga, Jayden Meghoma, Max Aarons and Derek Cornelius, building from the back seems like an essential place to start.Rangers conceded 43 Premiership goals last season - more than Celtic, Hearts and Motherwell and one fewer than Hibernian.Towering centre-half Emmanuel Fernandez grew in stature in his debut campaign and Tuur Rommens added tenacity and thrust at left-back following his January arrival from Belgium.Dujon Sterling provides aggression and athleticism but in three seasons at Ibrox has played just under half the games that Tavernier, eight years his senior, managed in the same time period.Like Sterling, John Souttar has had injury problems and has another year to run on his contract. The Scotland centre-half was sidelined for 10 games last term and, when fit, started just two of the last nine.New defensive recruits are certain but Souttar can take heart from the way Craig Halkett resurrected his career under McInnes, with Stuart Findlay another seasoned Scottish campaigner to flourish while working with the new Rangers boss. McInnes' tendency to field a back three may also suit Souttar, having looked more comfortable in that system with both Hearts and Scotland.Rangers' last title celebration in 2020-21 was built on a stingy defence leaking a mere 13 goals and a solid back four was the bedrock of success during the Walter Smith reigns, the first of which featured McInnes as a player.Pruning bloated squadScotland pair Lawrence Shankland and Findlay Curtis look set to be key men for Rangers next season [SNS]Rangers will hope to hold on to prize assets like Fernandez and Nicolas Raskin, but there will need to be goings as well as comings this summer.Of last year's intake, Lyall Cameron and Oliver Antman struggled to make an impact while Thelo Aasgaard, Djeidi Gassama and Bojan Miovski showed glimpses of promise but not nearly often enough.Nedim Bajrami, who has two years on his deal to run, was seldom seen. The same applies to Danilo, who was again underwhelming before an unremarkable stint in the Netherlands, while the lesser-spotted Oscar Cortes remains under contract until 2029.The blossoming of Findlay Curtis on loan at Kilmarnock, which earned the teenage winger a World Cup call, should soften the blow of Mikey Moore returning to Tottenham. His potential promotion to the Rangers starting line-up would push Antman or Gassama further down the pecking order too.Hit the ground runningRangers cannot afford another slow start.Last season, it took until late September for a first league victory and when Russell Martin was sacked on 5 October they were eighth in the Premiership, trailing McInnes' Hearts by 11 points. While Rohl was new to Scottish football, McInnes knows the terrain inside out - with the vast majority of his 814 matches as a manager coming in the Premiership. The 54-year-old made an instant impact at Tynecastle, winning eight of his first nine top-flight games and losing just one in 18 as Hearts came so close to ending a 41-year Old Firm stranglehold on the title.Rangers are scheduled to begin pre-season training this week, with a camp in Austria to follow. The Premiership kicks off on the first weekend of August, with the first leg of the third qualifying round for the Europa League on 6 August.Cavenagh and co have already invested heavily and will be in a hurry to see some silverware from their investment. The American had been backing Rohl to do that with a "revamped squad and a full pre-season".The man in charge has changed but the mission remains the same.Visit our Rangers page for all the latest news, analysis and fan viewsGet Rangers news notifications in the BBC Sport app

Man City World Cup 2026 Watch: Bernardo Silva withdrawn at half-time in Portugal vs DR Congo
Man City World Cup 2026 Watch: Bernardo Silva withdrawn at half-time in Portugal vs DR CongoBernardo Silva was Manchester City’s only representative in Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo on Wednesday night, tactically withdrawn at the half-time interval. An impressive DR Congo side threw a spanner in the works for Portugal’s World Cup opener, fighting back to secure a well-earned 1-1 draw at Houston Stadium, after midfielder João Neves put Roberto Martínez’s men ahead in the sixth minute with a sharp header.Despite monopolising possession, the Seleção failed to turn their dominance into clear-cut opportunities and were punished deep into first-half injury time as an unmarked Yoane Wissa capitalised on a fine Arthur Masuaku delivery to nod home from close range. The world’s 46th-ranked nation proved to be a formidable adversary 52 years after their debut in the competition, executing a disciplined defensive game plan while remaining hazardous on the counter-attack, with Cédric Bakambu rattling the woodwork.Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo made history by matching Lionel Messi’s record of appearing in six different World Cup finals, though the 41-year-old was left frustrated in his pursuit of becoming the first player to score in six separate editions. The veteran forward squandered Portugal’s best late chances, dragging two second-half cutbacks wide from substitute Francisco Conceição, leaving Neves’ early header as the heavy favorites’ solitary shot on target during a toothless team performance.Bernardo Silva match statistics vs DR Congo45 Minutes23 Touches17 Accurate Passes94% Pass Accuracy4 Passes Into Final Third1 Tackle1 Recovery1 Ground Duel Won1 Accurate Long BallMatheus Nunes was an unused substitute in the match.Ruben Dias was unavailable for Portugal vs DR Congo due to a lack of match fitness.Data courtesy of FotMob.

U.S. Open Matches Masters As Richest Golf Major With $22.5M Purse
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — This week’s U.S. Open purse is getting a$1 million boost to $22.5 million, tournament organizers announced Wednesday, matching the Masters as golf’s richest major championship. In April, prize money at Augusta National surpassed the U.S. Open with a $1.5 million bump over the 2025 Masters. The last time the two majors had the same purse was 2016, when they both paid out $10 million.“We believe we’re the best championship in the game, and we want a lot of aspects to be the best championship in the game,” USGA CEO Mike Whan said at the organization’s pre-tournament press conference. “Where we go, how we treat the players, how we pay out.”The USGA did not increase the U.S. Open purse last year, paying out the same $21.5 million in prize money as in 2024. That marked the championship’s first time since 2021 with no pay bump.J.J. Spaun and Bryson DeChambeau each won $4.3 million in 2025 and 2024, respectively. This week’s champion will take home $4.5 million—the same amount Rory McIlroy won at this year’s Masters.“Some of that’s just personal pride,” Whan said. “We want to be big. We want to be the best. We want to make sure it’s life-changing in multiple ways.”However, Whan also said the U.S. Open is “not in a race, we’re not chasing,” echoing what he told Front Office Sports last month. “It wouldn’t bother me a bit if Augusta was more or less the same,” Whan said at the time.“We think it’s a measure of how we feel about our championship,” Whan said Wednesday of the U.S. Open’s prize money. “It needs to be significant and stand out. We think $22.5 million does.”Bill Streicher-Imagn ImagesMajor MovementThe U.S. Open is the third of the four majors to raise its prize money so far this year. The PGA Championship increased its purse to $20.5 million last month, up from $19 million in 2025.The Open Championship has paid out $17 million in prize money each of the past two years, and has not yet announced the purse for next month’s tournament.Prize money in golf has skyrocketed since the 2022 emergence of LIV Golf, which launched paying unprecedented $25 million purses at every tournament, and this year has paid out $32.3 million in prize money at each event.Despite not having major status, the PGA Tour’s Players Championship has had a $25 million purse and $4.5 million winner’s check since 2023, the same year the PGA Tour started paying out $20 million purses at its eight signature events each season.Equitable Pay?This week’s$22.5 million purse increase marks a roughly 4.6% bump over the 2025 U.S. Open’s prize money of $21.5 million.Earlier this month, the USGA increased the U.S. Women’s Open purse by $500,000 to $12.5 million—a roughly 4.2% bump above the $12 million purse in 2025.The post U.S. Open Matches Masters As Richest Golf Major With $22.5M Purse appeared first on Front Office Sports.

Alan Smith tips Arsenal to cash in on academy graduate
Alan Smith tips Arsenal to cash in on academy graduateAlan Smith has suggested that Arsenal could consider selling Ethan Nwaneri this summer because the attacker would represent pure profit as he continues to struggle to establish himself in the club’s first team.Nwaneri is one of the most highly regarded players to emerge from the Arsenal academy in recent years, and the Gunners sent him on loan to Olympique Marseille at the start of this year to aid his development.Although he did not receive as much playing time as Arsenal would have hoped during his spell away from the club, there is little doubt that he remains one of the most talented teenagers in world football.Arsenal’s Long-Term View on NwaneriThe Gunners continue to regard Nwaneri as a player who could become an important part of their squad in the future. Arsenal have worked closely with the youngster’s development and remain committed to helping him fulfil his potential. His progress has been monitored carefully, and there is a belief that he can eventually establish himself as a key figure within the team if he continues to develop in the right environment.Despite that confidence, the possibility of a sale cannot be completely ruled out because of the financial advantages such a move could provide.Financial Considerations Could Influence DecisionAs an academy graduate, Nwaneri would generate pure profit for Arsenal if he were sold, given that the club did not pay a transfer fee to acquire him. This financial aspect could become a significant factor should a suitable offer arrive.According to the Metro, Smith believes Arsenal may be tempted to cash in on the youngster under the right circumstances. He said: “As an academy product, it’s pure profit, isn’t it? And he hasn’t had much of a sniff at all and then went out on loan.“I think as a manager, as a club, you’re always a bit reluctant to let a talent like that go who you’ve nurtured, but with the financial regulations it could free up money to buy elsewhere.“So we’ll see on that. But the player himself might feel that he could do with a move if he feels the gaffer doesn’t really have trust in him.”While Arsenal value Nwaneri’s potential, the combination of limited first team opportunities and financial considerations could make his future a subject of discussion in the months ahead._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. U.S. Open: Can Justin Rose complete Britain's major hat trick?
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Justin Rose could become part of a unique golf record should he win a second career U.S. Open this week. The 45-year-old Englishman could make it a three-peat of British major winners this year, following Rory McIlroy's Masters win and Aaron Rai breaking through at last month's PGA Championship. The Brits, which can also include Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood, who was the 2018 U.S. Open runner up at Shinnecock Hills, will face stiff competition, of course. Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa are among the favored Americans who will challenge for the season's third major."I don't think it necessarily suits a British player any more than it does the Americans," Rose said on Wednesday, one day before the U.S. Open tees off. "They seem to come over and play great golf in The Open Championship every single year. I feel like their record at The Open Championship is actually stronger potentially than our own sometimes. I don't really see that being an advantage per se, but I like that you should never go against a run, and three in a row would be good."Justin Rose of England runs up the hill to the 15th tee box prior to 126th U.S. Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on June 17, 2026 in Southampton, New York.Tracy Wilcox via Getty ImagesRose is right, especially for the European players, who are so used to playing in the U.S. as part of the PGA Tour.Play Golf Pick 'Em now to make your predictions for the U.S. Open!"I think just over time we've got a lot more comfortable with the style of golf that you need to play and the setups around here," said Rory McIlroy.Rose missed has a missed cut (2004) and T10 finish (2018) on his Shinnecock U.S. Open résumé. The tournament in general has not been kind to him. Since winning at Merion in 2013, he’s seven missed cuts, including five out of the past six.Rose's major performance this season has given him confidence heading into the 2026 U.S. Open. He finished T3 at the Masters and T10 at the PGA Championship. He has missed only one cut since early March and finished T12 at the Memorial two weeks ago.Looking back is not in Rose's forte. Between the Masters and PGA Championship, he finished T65 at the Cadillac Championship and T45 at the Truist Championship. Not exactly inspiring weeks that would put you in a good mood heading into a major. The now 45-year-old Rose says he keeps a focus on the bigger tournaments on the calendar and tries to find his form as they approach. That includes effective preparation and allowing his body to recover at the right time."Obviously that's a very hard thing to do is to, kind of peak on demand, but you've got to give it a go, right?," Rose said. "You've got to kind of stack the odds in your favor. Me and my team, we talk about ticking boxes. As I prepare for a major, I tick as many preparation boxes as I can to give myself ultimately the best chance I can of playing well."They're the events that grab my attention. They're the events that are going to change my career. They're the events that I've sort of been getting up for and playing well in. So I'm excited."

Ronaldo fails to shine as DR Congo earn historic World Cup point
Yoane Wissa's goal secured the Democratic Republic of Congo's first ever point at a World Cup in a 1-1 draw with Portugal (RONALDO SCHEMIDT)Cristiano Ronaldo's record-equalling sixth World Cup got off to a disappointing start as the Democratic Republic of Congo secured their first ever point at the finals, drawing 1-1 with Portugal in their Group K match on Wednesday.Yoane Wissa's header cancelled out Joao Neves's early goal and the African side -- appearing in their first World Cup since 1974 when it was known as Zaire -- more than held their own.Ronaldo, 41, was largely a peripheral figure throughout the match -- failing to make the impact his great rival Lionel Messi had done on Tuesday in scoring a hat-trick against Algeria. The DRC's achievement was even greater given their preparations had been disrupted by the Ebola outbreak back in their country. Some Portugal players were wearing wrist bands, given to them by their Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, in tribute to late team-mate Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash last year.Portugal got off to the perfect start, with Neves powering home a header from Pedro Neto's cross in the sixth minute. However, despite dominating possession they lacked a cutting edge and well into time added on in the first half their opponents made them pay.Wissa rose unmarked to head past Diogo Costa in the Portuguese goal sparking wild celebrations on the pitch, the bench and among the Congolese fans in the stadium as the Newcastle forward registered his country's first ever goal at a World Cup. Former Portuguese defensive bulwark Pepe, watching from the VIP seats, did not look impressed. Bernardo Silva had started the day by joining Real Madrid on a free transfer but he ended it by watching from the bench after Martinez took him off at half-time.He was briefly off his feet celebrating when Joao Cancelo's overhead kick hit the back of the net -- only for it to be ruled out for offside. The Congolese were matching the Portuguese, though, and 35-year-old veteran striker Cedric Bakambu shrugged aside Bruno Fernandes, but his shot came back off the near post. Ronaldo finally had a chance to shine when presented with a chance by Francisco Conceicao's pass but he fluffed his lines sending it wide of the post. The same combination linked up again minutes later, Conceicao -- a far livelier presence than Silva had been -- teeing up Ronaldo but once again the result was the same, the ball went wide.Portugal thought they had at least got a corner but when it was not given Conceicao slammed the ball into the ground in frustration as his side failed to pick up three points in their opener.pi/nf

Home Run Derby 2026: Drawing up a dream Derby field, featuring Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, Bryce Harper and more
We are less than a month away from the most delightful, awe-inspiring, low-stakes, good-natured event on the baseball calendar: the Home Run Derby. This year, MLB’s smorgasbord of big flies will take place July 13 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, home to the 2026 All-Star festivities. Unfortunately, last year’s dinger champ, Cal Raleigh, likely won’t be around to defend his title, as the Mariners’ catcher has endured an injury-riddled first half. As of this moment, none of the eight Derby contenders has been announced, so let’s take this opportunity to craft ourselves a dream field. A good Derby needs diversity: righties and lefties, moon shots and laserbeams, heroes and heels, youngsters and geezers, innocence and experience. Something for everybody, everybody for somebody. To be clear, the following octet is an unrealistic, pie-in-the-sky hope. Some of these sluggers will forgo participation due to injury, fear of injury or, in Shohei Ohtani’s case, the pursuit of a Cy Young. But let’s at least dream about the world we want to live in.Kyle Schwarber, Phillies, left-handedBryce Harper, Phillies, left-handedWe can group the hometown heroes together. Both Schwarber and Harper have put together All-Star-caliber first halves, and both should end up as reserves for the Midsummer Classic. If that comes to fruition, it’ll be difficult — near impossible — to envision either of the two biggest Phillies, two lads who have built their legends around the dinger, sitting out the Derby. That said, it would be rare to have two Derby contenders competing in their home ballpark. That hasn’t happened since Justin Bour and Giancarlo Stanton showed out in the 2017 edition in Miami. But Harper and Schwarber have matched up in the Derby once before. When Harper won the thing at Nationals Park back in 2018, he barely edged out Schwarber in the finals. A showdown between these two longtime teammates in front of a roaring Philadelphia crowd would make for magnificent television.Nick Kurtz, Athletics, left-handedThere’s something beautiful about a guy nicknamed The Big Amish having an over-abundance of power. Prior to Drake Baldwin’s blast on Tuesday, Kurtz, a childhood Phillies fan from nearby Lancaster, owned the single longest homer in MLB in each of the past two seasons: a 471-foot shot last weekend and a preposterous, 493-foot blast in September.Barring injury, that prodigious juice should be on display in July. Kurtz, who currently ranks fourth among AL first basemen in All-Star voting, has blossomed into one of the game’s most entertaining sluggers. Even if he doesn’t get voted in, he’s a near-lock to be added as a sub and thus is an absolutely perfect Derby candidate.Mike Trout, Angels, right-handedTrout — the future Hall of Famer, three-time MVP and soon-to-be 12-time All Star — has never competed in the Derby. That’s like LeBron James never doing the dunk contest or the Phillie Phanatic never doing the hot dog eating contest. Of course, given Trout’s lengthy injury history, it’s more likely that we’ll see him in the Kentucky Derby than the Home Run Derby. But Trout, a die-hard Eagles fan with a soft hoagie-mouth accent who turns 35 in August, will never have a more compelling opportunity. His 2026 season has been one of rejuvenation, of turning back time, of feeling young again. He’s playing center field every day, he’s staying healthy, he’s putting up amazing numbers for a bad Angels team. What better way to celebrate, to honor this new lease on his baseball life than by hammering batting practice fastballs into the South Philly sky? Shohei Ohtani, Dodgers, left-handedThere’s no chance. Zero shot. Not in a million years or for $700 million. Besides, he’s a pitcher anyway. It’s hard to believe now, but Ohtani competed in the Derby once upon a time, putting on quite a show at Coors Field in 2021. The then-Angel clocked 28 homers but was ousted by fellow generationally wealthy slugger Juan Soto in the first round.Given all that’s on Ohtani’s plate — hitting, pitching, Funyons — it’s hard to imagine the two-way dynamo risking the biscuit to hit some taters. It’s even harder to imagine Dave Roberts, Andrew Friedman and Dodgers ownership giving him the green light.Hope, though, it gets us out of bed in the morning. It's highly unlikely that Shohei Ohtani will compete in this year's Home Run Derby. But hey, we can dream.Amy Monks/Yahoo SportsMunetaka Murakami, White Sox, left-handedLast winter, Murakami’s free agency produced a much smaller contract figure than anticipated, as evaluators held serious doubts about the Japanese slugger’s ability to hit big-league pitching. The White Sox scooped him up on a relative bargain, and so far, so very, very good. He has smoked 20 homers in just 57 games.Murakami is currently on the injured list due to a hamstring issue, making his All-Star Game and Derby participation both thornier propositions than they might have been. Even if he’s off the shelf before the break, the thrilling, first-place Chicago White Sox might ask Murakami to take it easy. It’ll be hard for MLB to leave him out, though, if he’s fully healthy.Junior Caminero, Rays, right-handedIf we can’t have Big Dumper, let’s at least book the guy he beat in last year’s finals. Caminero’s performance last summer was a delight, epitomizing what this glorious event, at its best, can be: a showcase, a starmaker, a platform for exciting, young sluggers to announce themselves in front of a national audience. That’s exactly what happened with the suave, exuberant Rays third baseman. Caminero put up quite a fight in the final, ripping 15 homers to nearly chase down Raleigh’s total of 18. He deserves another bite at the apple.Pete Alonso, Orioles, right-handedEvery great Derby has a villain. Considering the context, nobody would play that role better than Alonso. Even though the longtime Met left the NL East last winter, his name still makes many a Philadelphian’s skin crawl. His introduction at a Citizens Bank Park Derby would surely elicit a warm, thorough hailstorm of boos from the welcoming crowd. Sadly, though, Alonso lags behind in a crowded field of AL first basemen, leaving his presence at the Midsummer Classic in serious doubt.Alonso, who in 2021 became just the second hitter to ever win consecutive Derbies, sat out last year’s event for the first time in his career. It’s unclear whether Pete still identifies as The Derby Guy. Perhaps 2024 was his final hurrah. Let’s hope not; he needs just one more win to tie Ken Griffey Jr. for the most all time.Sure, the intense seriousness with which Alonso approaches the proceedings is somewhat corny, strong meme fodder. But it’s also phenomenal theater. What is the Derby if not theater? This stage needs its greatest actor, its most committed thespian. Come on, Pete, give the people of Philly what they want.

Rohl thanks Rangers after first day in charge of RB Salzburg
Danny Rohl took charge of Rangers for the final time in mid-May [SNS]Danny Rohl thanked Rangers after leaving the Scottish Premiership outfit for Red Bull Salzburg and taking his first training session with the Austrian club. The German, 37, departed Ibrox after eight months, having previously managed Sheffield Wednesday. Derek McInnes was appointed Rangers manager shortly after Rohl's departure was announced."I've been here several times in the past and know Salzburg well – the club has always stood for attacking, courageous football," Rohl said at his first news conference with RB Salzburg."That's precisely the path we want to take. We want to return to the identity that distinguished the club for so many years."I have to also thank Rangers, who agreed to this move."Sporting director Marcus Mann commented: "It's true that we had agreed with Danny a week ago."A few points came up that needed clarification, which is why the matter dragged on a bit. We certainly would have liked to finalise it a few days earlier but the important thing is that it worked out. Sometimes you can have different opinions on things – those have now been resolved."

Teams to watch in potential move for QB Brendan Sorsby in NFL Supplemental Draft
The 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft is a hot topic following the likely entry of Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who was forced into the process after a suspension related to betting on NCAA games. While the supplemental draft is rarely a focal point for teams looking to find a franchise quarterback, Sorsby's combination of tools and the unique circumstances around his entry have made this a particularly intriguing event for front offices around the league. On the "Football 301" podcast, Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice and guest Bill Barnwell of ESPN discussed the ins and outs of Sorsby's profile, his fit in the NFL, and — most importantly —the kinds of teams that could roll the dice on acquiring him via the supplemental draft's blind-bidding process. Tice and Barnwell agreed: No first-round bids are coming, and a second would be a surprise. The sweet spot: a late third- or early fourth-round bid, potentially devalued given the blind auction nature and positional inflation at QB.Sorsby is not the "next Mahomes" (despite some aggressive internet comps) — but in a league desperate for viable QBs, he could command significant mid-round interest. As Tice summed up, "It only takes one," and in the supplement draft, with its unique risk/reward dynamics, Sorsby's path into the league could hinge on which front office trusts his talent over his off-field red flags. This will be the rare supplemental draft worth watching. Here are the teams to keep an eye on as potential suitors for Sorsby.Teams with extra draft picks: Extra ammo, extra interestTeams with multiple picks in a round or surplus future selections have more flexibility to gamble in the supplemental process. As outlined by Tice and Barnwell, these teams are automatically in the conversation:New York Jets: Three first-rounders (though unlikely to burn a top pick), possible flexibility with other Day 2 assetsCleveland Browns: Two firsts, plus extra fourths and a fifthMinnesota Vikings: Multiple picks in the third and fifth roundsGreen Bay Packers: Two extra picks in the fourthCarolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins: Extra mid-round selectionsTeams with question marks at quarterbackSorsby isn't viewed as a surefire franchise starter, but his tools, mobility, and "late third, early fourth" grade, according to Tice, make him intriguing as a future upside play, especially for teams unsettled at QB.Pittsburgh Steelers: They have a crowded but unproven QB room; they could swing for upside without the pressure to play Sorsby immediately.Said Barnwell: "The one that seems most obvious to me is the Steelers ... Given that there's not really a path to them getting a quarterback. If … you see this guy as a second-, third-round borderline player, let's go and use the second-round pick on him … the upside is the upside."Cleveland Browns: They’reknown for dart-throwing at backup QB spots. The Browns possess extra draft capital to play with. However, as Tice points out, "Then it's just recreating the messy bed that you just had last year."Minnesota Vikings: Added extra picks, have flexibility to "throw a fourth away," and are in a long-term search for a franchise QB.New York Jets: Surplus picks could allow for an upside bet at QB without cratering their 2027 capital or threatening the short-term timeline.New Orleans Saints: Barnwell sees a potential fit here."Sneaky fun team … Offensive line got better … Everything's there that I want to see,” Barnwell said. “Is it going to be good? Maybe. I don't know. I want to watch it though."With uncertainty at QB beyond the current plan, they could throw a mid or late pick Sorsby's way.

Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan go full throttle, script India's second-fastest double-century partnership
Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan put together the second-fastest 200-plus partnership by an Indian pair in ODI cricket as their 224-run stand helped India post 402 all out against Afghanistan in the second ODI in Lucknow on Wednesday. The duo added 224 runs for the third wicket in just 140 balls at a run rate of 9.6 after Afghanistan opted to bowl first. Only the 208-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul against the Netherlands during the 2023 ODI World Cup came faster among Indian pairs. That stand had come in 127 balls at a run rate of 9.82.The partnership was built around Gill's 154 and Kishan's 125, with both batters scoring centuries. It was also the first time two Indian batters scored ODI hundreds in 80 balls or fewer in the same innings. Overall, it was only the eighth such instance by any team in ODI cricket. Kishan reached his century in 71 balls, while Gill got there in 77 deliveries.India had shuffled their batting order as part of preparations for next year's World Cup, with Yashasvi Jaiswal opening alongside Rohit Sharma and Gill moving down to No. 3.The move did not work for Jaiswal, who was dismissed for 4 in the second over. Rohit looked set for a big score and struck 48 before Rashid Khan dismissed him with a googly that took an inside edge onto the stumps.Gill then took control of the innings and found support in Kishan. The pair attacked the Afghanistan bowlers and quickly rebuilt the innings after India were reduced to 96 for 2.Gill mixed caution with aggression on his way to his ninth ODI century. The hundred was also his first since taking over as India's full-time ODI captain.Kishan, meanwhile, ended a wait of more than three years for an ODI hundred. It was his second century in the format and his first since the double hundred against Bangladesh in December 2022. After reaching his fifty, the left-hander accelerated sharply, scoring his next 50 runs in just 19 balls. The heat in Lucknow began to affect Gill as the innings progressed. He needed treatment after the 34th over and appeared troubled by cramps, but continued batting and carried India deep into the innings. The 224-run stand finally ended when Nangeyalia Kharote dismissed Kishan for 125 off 79 balls. His innings included 14 fours and seven sixes.Gill went on to score 154 from 110 balls before falling while attempting a reverse sweep. His knock contained 22 fours and two sixes. After Gill's dismissal, India lost momentum. Kharote led Afghanistan's fightback with figures of 4 for 76, while Rashid Khan claimed three wickets.KL Rahul was dismissed for a first-ball duck, while Shreyas Iyer made 26 before departing. India eventually lost seven wickets in the final 10 overs but still finished with 402 all out in 49.5 overs.

Red Sox-Fernando Tatis Jr. Blockbuster Proposal: Who Says No?
San Diego Padres slugger Fernando Tatis Jr.If the Boston Red Sox are going to turn their season around, it's not going to be thanks to small changes. If the Red Sox really want to right the ship, they need to get bold and make a splash in the trade market. Specifically, Boston needs to target an elite right-handed bat. The lineup is lefty-heavy already and is missing an important right-handed bat in Trevor Story. Plus, of course, the Red Sox let Alex Bregman walk in free agency before the 2026 season. Boston doesn't need to just add around the edges, but instead find a way to add another star to the organization, preferably under team control or a long-term contract. One player who would be a dream target would be San Diego Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. Despite a lack of power this season with just two homers, Tatis would give the Red Sox the right-handed bat they need and he's under contract through the 2034 season. If Craig Breslow is looking for a guy who could help save his job and the team's season, Tatis is the guy to call about, even if the Padres don't want to talk. Here's a mock trade the Red Sox should call San Diego about and offer: Red Sox Receive: OF/INF Fernando Tatis Jr.Padres Receive: OF Jarren Duran, RHP Brayan Bello, INF Mikey Romero (No. 11 prospect), RHP Jedixson Paez (No. 19 prospect)Do you have a take to get off your chest? Do you want to engage in a growing Red Sox community? Comment on our content alongside staff and fans alike!Poll: Would you want to see this trade? In this scenario, the Red Sox give up an All-Star-level outfielder along with a young starter on a long-term deal. Plus, the Red Sox would be giving up a former first-round pick and a pitching prospect. They would cut costs while arguably getting better as a team overall. Boston would get a player who can help the club right away, either in the outfield or at second base. More MLB: Four Homers? Cardinals Top Prospect Captured MLB World's Attention

10 men and a statue: Portugal are sacrificing another World Cup for Cristiano Ronaldo’s ego
Anything Lionel Messi could do, Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't do better. A day after the Argentinian began his World Cup in a manner to suggest his talent is timeless, his great rival started in a way to show his powers have waned with the passing of time. Messi’s treble against Algeria gives him 16 World Cup goals, double Ronaldo’s tally. More pertinently, it justified Argentina’s policy of building a team around an ageing legend. For the third tournament in row, however, the danger is that Ronaldo holds Portugal back. A draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo highlighted the difficulties of trying to win the World Cup with a team of 10 men and a statue. For one of the favourites, it was a wretched start. Houston, they had a problem. Or he was the problem. Ronaldo’s impotence condemned Portugal to a draw which, in turn, could mean there is no last reunion with Messi in the quarter-finals in Kansas City: fail to win the group and they will have to plot a different path altogether. As Ronaldo appeared in a sixth World Cup, he remains yet to become the first player to score in six. He did not get particularly close.Ronaldo has now gone 10 matches at the World Cup or Euros without scoring for Portugal (Reuters)That Portugal had three-quarters of possession and an xG of just 0.69 could indicate their striker was starved of service. But when the player in question lacked the speed to run behind defenders or the movement to elude them, Portugal were trying to beat an obdurate side with a non-presence in the box. They could not press or stretch a defence or drag opponents out of position. Instead, Ronaldo stood on the fringes of the game. Even when a cross was headed in for a seemingly trademark Ronaldo goal, the scorer was actually the diminutive midfielder Joao Neves. The veteran eventually mustered three shots, none on target. There was a cost to Portugal beyond the inability to test goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi; another Lionel to come out on top against Ronaldo. For his first shot, the 41-year-old stabbed wide but should have left the ball for Bruno Fernandes, free behind him and visibly irritated.Ronaldo lingered on the pitch throughout the game. In one respect, there is a logic in that: why take off a man with a record 143 international goals, and the best part of 1,000 in professional football, when his team required a goal? He had moved so little that even a man in his forties may not have been exhausted. And yet, it underlined the impression he gets preferential treatment. Two of the front three were substituted: the booked Bernardo Silva at half-time, Pedro Neto after 70 minutes, Even when Goncalo Ramos came on, it was Vitinha who went off.It conformed to a theme. In Euro 2024, Roberto Martinez removed Ronaldo in just one of his five appearances. The strange alliance of captain and manager meant that decisions only impacted other players.Since then, Ronaldo has scored in qualifiers, in the Nations League, in the Saudi Pro League. And yet an ability to average almost a goal a game there again felt irrelevant at elite international level. The most significant number by the end was not Ronaldo’s 973 career goals but the nine tournament games he has gone without finding the net.Roberto Martinez has been accused of being too ‘scared’ to take Ronaldo off despite Portugal’s struggles (Reuters)His drought in World Cups and European Championships now stretches back 10 matches, 801 minutes. There is a question of how long that barren run would have to be for Martinez to drop him, or substitute him. There is, admittedly, the issue that Portugal lack high-class centre-forwards now, with Ramos now a Paris Saint-Germain substitute. But the replacement wingers Rafael Leao and Francisco Conceicao at least brought verve, with a speed and willingness to dribble at defenders. Fernandes can like having runners around him, and arguably had too few, particularly in Portugal’s starting 11. Vitinha and Neves can excel at stylish passing, but they still benefit from speed in front of them. Silva likes quick combination play. Can he do that with Ronaldo?Maybe, in the final reckoning, Portugal suffered from the clemency that was supposed to benefit them. Ronaldo should have been banned for this game, due to his red card against Ireland. A fixation on the famous that seems shared by Fifa and the United States may have been the real reason he escaped with a suspended suspension. But had Ronaldo been ineligible, Portugal would have been forced to investigate life without him, to either try another striker or another way of playing. And, terrifically as DR Congo played and impossible as it is to know for certain, it is hard to escape the sense that Portugal would have won if they played without Ronaldo. And so, as in Euro 2024, they risk sacrificing another chance of glory on the altar of his ego.

Arsenal’s latest transfer stance on Marcus Rashford comes to light
Arsenal’s latest transfer stance on Marcus Rashford comes to light Arsenal’s latest position on a swoop for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has emerged.Uncertain futureRashford’s future is in limbo after Barcelona made the decision not to keep him despite his superb loan spell in the 2025/26 season. He contributed 14 goals and as many assists across all competitions to help the Blaugrana retain their La Liga crown. Barcelona had the option of retaining him on a permanent transfer for just £26m but they opted against it.Hansi Flick’s side remains open to a cut-price deal or even another season-long loan, but United are not entertaining such talk at the moment. Over the weekend, there were suggestions that Michael Carrick would be open to working with Rashford at Old Trafford.Speculation around this was further fuelled after it was reported that Rashford would prefer to stay at United rather than join another English team. It’s understood that he has a £40m release clause, which is practically valid for any club except bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.Arsenal, fresh from winning the Premier League, have been mentioned as an interested party in the England international. There have also been claims that United have offered him to the Gunners as they push for a permanent parting of ways.Arsenal are expected to be busy in the market as they look to build a team capable of defending the title. They could do with bolstering their attacking options. With Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard both tipped to leave, Rashford could be the one to benefit. However, according to The Mirror, Arsenal are not prioritising a move for the Carrington academy graduate.Arsenal’s stanceThe newspaper says that Rashford is poised to return to United after the World Cup for showdown talks with club officials about his future.Rashford holds the opinion that his best option is to move on.But Arsenal is unlikely to be where he lands, with the North London club cooling on the idea of adding him to their ranks.A good World Cup from Rashford could be United’s ticket to a summer sale.Featured image Alex Caparros via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade.
