The Arizona Cardinals may take a look at Brendan Sorsby
NFL teams are starting to inquire about former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby. Sorsby decided to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, which takes place in July.Sorsby decided a few days ago to part ways with the Red Raiders after the controversy surrounding his gambling started to become a problem for the school. Now, as an NFL prospect, the young QB is drawing interest from teams, including the Arizona Cardinals.According to Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro, the team may be interested.“It will be like almost any other pro day. I expect the Cardinals to be represented,” Gambadoro said. “What I can tell you is the Cardinals have done a lot of extensive research on Sorsby already, because there was a chance he could have been in this year’s (NFL Draft).“I would expect that they will have interest. Where in the draft, I can’t tell you. But because they don’t know if they have an answer at quarterback, they will continue to look at the quarterback position. Having Carson Beck in the third round does not rule out the Arizona Cardinals from taking a chance on Sorsby in the supplemental draft.”Besides the Cardinals, the New York Jets might be another team interested in Sorsby, since they didn't draft a quarterback in this year's draft. The NFL Supplemental Draft will take place on July 10.This article originally appeared on Touchdown Wire: The Arizona Cardinals may take a look at Brendan Sorsby

World Cup: Kane ties Lineker’s record with first-half brace in England’s win over Croatia
World Cup: Kane ties Lineker’s record with first-half brace in England’s win over CroatiaEngland started their 2026 World Cup campaign in style as Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Croatia 4-2. FC Bayern’s Harry Kane added two more goals to his collection as he has now tied Gary Lineker as England’s all-time top scorer in the history of the competition. Both strikers have World Cup Golden Balls, but Kane started this tournament with a chance to become the first player to win it twice. And, like some of the big names, he had a perfect start to his third World Cup.Kane put England in front in the 12th minute when he benefited from retaking a penalty-kick as Dominik Livakovic left his line early before saving the initial effort. Croatia responded with Martin Baturina’s superb finish, but the 32-year-old restored England’s lead with a powerful header from Declan Rice’s corner-kick.Former Union Berlin striker Petar Musa’s strike in the last meaningful action of the half saw the two teams enter the break 2-2. Ivan Perišić, who has played for both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern, provided the assist for the MLS striker. It was a completely different game after the restart, however. England could’ve won it with a huge margin, but only ex-Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford found the net. Bundesliga strikers Igor Matanović and Andrej Kramaric came off the bench for Croatia, while Josip Stanišić and Luca Vušković were in the starting lineup. All three German coaches – Julian Nagelsmann (Germany), Ralf Rangnick (Austria) and Tuchel (England) – won their respective games on matchday one at the 2026 World Cup. England sit top of the group before the other game between Ghana and Panama.

Alpine ‘Not Happy’ With Red Bull Over Missing Podium Trophy
Alpine, which successfully won the review over Pierre Gasly’s penalty, now owns a third-place finish this season at the Monaco Grand Prix. However, Alpine does not yet have the trophy, as Red Bull claims it is back in France and in Isack Hadjar’s possession. Hadjar did not cross the line in third place; rather, it was given to him after the fact, following Gasly’s penalties being enacted. Alpine and Gasly challenged the penalties to the FIA and then managed to get them overturned, marking a big victory for the French racing team.May 21, 2026; Montreal, Quebec, CANADA; Alpine driver Pierre Gasly (10) addresses the media during a press conference at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Mandatory Credit: David Kirouac-Imagn ImagesWith the team not having won the trophy yet, Sky Sports F1 reporter Ted Kravitz shared that Alpine and its executive, Flavio Briatore, were not pleased about not having it back. “I understand that Flavio Briatore has called it unsporting,” Kravitz said.“Flavio Briatore is not happy about it and has said it’s unsporting of Red Bull to unreasonably, in his mind, withhold the trophy from Monaco.”Plans were in place for Alpine to celebrate on Monday, but those will have to wait as there are new discussions about the trophy being held now. In reality, Alpine will likely be more upset about Red Bull and McLaren also appealing the result of the Monaco Grand Prix. Red Bull and McLaren are challenging the overturning of the result in the first place. Mandatory Credit: David Kirouac-Imagn ImagesAlpine’s real painAlso, Pierre Gasly is left with no way to get over the pain of his initial reaction. “It’s a real shame the one thing we can’t undo is that moment of elation where Pierre goes on the podium with the team and he sees all the guys and girls below,” Nielsen said.“We can’t give him that back, which is a real shame, because honestly, if I could choose, I’d rather have that then the points. But we’ll take the points because they are useful, it’s the best result we could have got and very positive.”

Republican police chief arrested for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor
Chad Essert, the 44-year-old Republican police chief of Bethel, Ohio, was arrested and indicted last Thursday on 56 counts of sexual battery and 14 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. He faces up to 280 years in prison if convicted on all charges. The alleged incidents occurred between 2005 and 2010 while Essert served as a teacher in Sharonville and an instructor at the Young Marines, a national youth program for children ages 8 through high school. Related GOP leader arrested for trying to hire a child prostitute Essert became Bethel’s police chief in 2021. Reporting from 2023 found that he had been fired or resigned under threat of firing from three of his previous law enforcement jobs for allegedly sexually harassing a female officer, intimidating witnesses, lying, and disobeying orders. A 2020 domestic violence charge accused him of hitting a woman with his vehicle, causing minor injuries. Conservative Christians and Republicans have repeatedly accused LGBTQ+ people and allies of “grooming” and “sexualizing” children. Essert is just the latest of a long line of Republicans to face legal consequences for such alleged crimes.

Cade Klubnik faces another injury setback as Jets proceed cautiously
The New York Jets aren't taking any chances with quarterback Cade Klubnik. As the team's 2026 NFL minicamp continued this week, the rookie once again found himself watching portions of practice rather than participating in them. Head coach Aaron Glenn provided an update.Per Coach Glenn, the Jets are exercising the precautionary approach. He named Klubnik as the only Jet who wouldn't participate in practice on Wednesday.Aaron Glenn says the only player who won't practice today - but will be available later in minicamp - is rookie QB Cade Klubnik, who sat out last week with back spasms. Glenn says it's precautionary, no need to rush him onto the field right now. #Jets— Dennis Waszak Jr. (@DWAZ73) June 16, 2026Klubnik continues working through back spasms that also limited him during organized team activities. The update arrived as both good news and frustrating news.On the positive side, Glenn expressed little concern about the long-term outlook. The negative news is that every missed practice represents one less opportunity for the rookie. As Glenn expressed previously, there's little reason to rush Klubnik back onto the field in June. At the time, Glenn described the move as precautionary. That message has not changed. In fact, videos from minicamp showed the rookie remaining active around the team while participating in individual work as he continued his recovery. For an organization focused on long-term development, patience makes perfect sense.Jets rookie QB Cade Klubnik was held out of 7-on-7 and team stuff with a minor back issue, but was able throw a little on a side field. pic.twitter.com/6CSE9wZ6yG— Dan Leberfeld (@jetswhispers) June 16, 2026The injury itself does not appear serious. What matters is the lost practice time. Klubnik entered the offseason needing every possible rep as he adjusted ro rhw NFL terminology, defensive disguises, and the speed of the professional game. Those lessons are difficult to replicate away from the practice field. The good news is there is still plenty of time. Training camp remains weeks away, and the regular season is even further in the distance. If the Jets had to choose between a healthy quarterback in July and additional reps in June, the answer would be obvious. Seeing as how that isn't the case, the answer about what to do now is also obvious.Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2026 offseason. Christian Pulisic ‘day to day’ after leaving USMNT’s World Cup opener with calf issue
Christian Pulisic continues to rehab an ongoing issue with his left calf -Credit:John Dorton/USSF/Getty ImagesThe status of the oft-injured Christian Pulisic has been a hot topic ever since he was substituted at halftime during the U.S. Men’s National Team’s 4-1 FIFA World Cup opener against Paraguay.Having largely been training alone, along with individual gym work, the 27-year-old’s status is now officially classified as “day to day” as he continues to manage a left calf issue, the United States Soccer Federation said, according to Steven Goff. This comes a matter of days after Tyler Adams was insistent that there was no reason to be concerned about his teammate’s injury.Pulisic last spoke with the media about the injury after the Paraguay game, where he explained, via ESPN, “I just got a bit of a kick first half, so I'm really hoping that it's nothing. Taking a little bit of precaution today, but I'm hoping I'll be fine the next few days.FIFA World Cup referee under investigation for alleged 'white supremacy' gestureCape Verde's hero's mom gets major US visa update after cross-party collaborationPulisic came off at the break during the U.S. Men's National Team's World Cup opening win against Paraguay -Credit:Shaun Clark/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images“Just the back of my leg, my calf area. But I've had similar things before and I'm staying positive. I don't think it's anything at all.”And while Pulisic has not addressed the issue since, teammate Antonee Robinson did speak with reporters on Wednesday, where he was asked about the AC Milan star.“He's not been training fully with the group yet. We've still got a couple of days to see where he is at,” he said, as per ESPN. “And you know, thankfully, we've got a lot of boys on the bench eager and ready to get involved and helping the team and with a lot of quality.“So it's a long tournament. If we don't have him back for the game, then you know, we're gonna make sure we have him back for the rest of the way, because we're gonna need him cause we're gonna need everyone, but hopefully we have everyone fit.”Should Pulisic be forced to miss out on the highly anticipated game against Australia on Friday, one which comes highly charged thanks to a back-and-forth between several USMNT legends and Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic, Pochettino would have several options to replace him.To listen to the latest episode of 'All Out Soccer' - CLICK HEREThe obvious answer could be Sebastian Berhalter who replaced him against Paraguay. That being said, other potential options include the scorer of the fourth goal against Paraguay, Gio Reyna, Tim Weah, or potentially Brenden Aaronson.Speaking on Wednesday, Aaronson said that whatever Pulisic’s status may or may not be, he doesn’t let that impact how he readies himself for the game. “I'm the type of guy that I'm always trying to be as calm as possible. I don't let any of the emotions of the game get to me at all,” he said.“I kind of take it day by day, and you know, if that opportunity comes, I'll always be ready. That's kind of where I am. I'm always ready to start games, play games, give my best and give my all. I'm looking at [it] the same way as it's a game to play and whatever role I'm given is I'm gonna give my best and it's just the player that I am.”The USMNT will face Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, on Friday, with a win enough for either side to secure a spot in the Round of 32 with a game to spare.

Mischievous Scotland fans give Boston's statues traffic cone hats
Scotland fans have taken inspiration from the Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow for their World Cup outfits [PA Media]Described as the "birthplace of the American Revolution", Boston's streets are teeming with monuments and landmarks that tell the story of the nation's history. And they're now experiencing something of a makeover.Scotland fans visiting the city for the World Cup have been decorating its statues with bright orange traffic cones, much to the bemusement of locals. The practice is familiar to anyone from Glasgow, where the Duke of Wellington statue at the Gallery of Modern Art has been wearing a cone at a jaunty angle since the 1980s.It's a mischievous visual engrained in Glasgow's identity - and was even a source of inspiration for the graffiti artist Banksy. The Duke in Glasgow's Royal Exchange Square usually has a traffic cone hat - as does his horse Copenhagen [Getty Images]An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 Scotland fans travelled to Boston for Scotland's opening match against Haiti last week - which ended in a 1-0 victory.Anticipation for their second match against Morocco on Friday is building and the conical pranks are perhaps an indication of high spirits. The Arms of Friendship statue at Charlestown Navy Yard received the traffic cone treatment earlier this week.Designed by Gillie and Marc Schattner, the artwork features a 36ft (11m) long bronze octopus holding up a number of the world's endangered animals including an elephant and a gorilla. The Arms of Friendship statue has been decorated with traffic cones [BBC]A couple of miles to the east on Faneuil Hall Square is a statue of the beloved former mayor of Boston, Kevin White. The Democrat served four terms, from 1968 to 1984, at a tumultuous time of racial conflict in the city.According to the Boston Globe, White governed in a "grand manner" and there was debate about whether the 10ft statue was tall enough when it was installed in the mid 2000s.Perhaps the Tartan Army thought he deserved an extra foot or two.Kevin White and his cone on Faneuil Hall Square [BBC]Scotland fans enjoyed the traffic cone treatment given to legendary basketball player Bill Russell [PA Media]A similar treatment was given to the statue of Boston Celtics basketball legend Bill Russell at City Hall Plaza.Brendan McGillicuddy, 26, from Boston, told the BBC he admired the statue's new addition on his way to work."I welcome it," he said. "I have no idea what it means but it's a nice little symbol of Scotland."It's a mark to say Scotland was here. I never realised it was a thing before the World Cup. I'd heard of the Tartan Army but not the cone thing. I'm here for it though."Bostonian Brendan thoroughly enjoyed the 'symbol of Scotland' [BBC]By Wednesday afternoon, Boston authorities had started to remove the traffic cones from statues - but fans are still keeping the momentum going in their own way.Alistair Blake, from Glasgow, and his two sons both gave an interview while wearing their own traffic cone hats.He started wearing them at the Euros because it was a bit of fun - and handy for the boys to spot him in the crowd.Alistair Blake said the hats were a bit of fun - and practical [BBC]He said: "It's a friendly Glaswegian gesture. I think you see it more here because there's so many statues."We don't get very far without someone stopping us and asking for a picture. "They think it's fun and want to know the symbolism behind it."Where does the tradition come from?Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, is famous for defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and later becoming prime minister. The Category-A listed statue of the duke on his favourite horse, Copenhagen, was sculpted by Italian artist Carlo Marochetti and erected in 1844 in Glasgow. However the tradition of his traffic cone is thought to have started by late night revellers in the 1980s.For years locals battled the council over the placement of the cone.It said the statue had once been minorly damaged and raised concerns around the potential for injury when attempting to place a cone. The council also reminded locals that the act was "vandalism" and police warned of criminal charges. But the prank continued and any attempts to free the duke of his plastic hat have always been quickly thwarted with the cone replaced within days. The prank was thought to have been started by late night revellers in the 1980s [BBC]Now images of the cone-topped statue are used to promote Glasgow and feature on posters, coasters and key rings. In 2023 Banksy called it his "favourite work of art in the UK", and it is was the reason he chose to hold his first exhibition in 14 years at the gallery.News of the traffic cones in Boston had made its way to the streets of Glasgow on Wednesday.Susan Law, who is originally from Paisley but now lives in Stamford, Lincolnshire, said the Boston statues were "brilliant"."It's fun and shows people are friendly," she said."I think the Americans are loving it and it seems to have been well perceived."The traffic-coned statue that inspired BanksyMackintosh statue gets cone treatmentArtist swaps Duke of Wellington traffic cone for paper-reading pigeonNicole, who is visiting Glasgow from Los Angeles with her daughter, said she had seen the photos of the Boston statues on social media but had not heard about the so-called tradition until she started planning her trip to Scotland."I messaged one of my friends in Boston who had no idea what was going on until I sent her one of the videos," she said."It's spread so quickly on social media that it is now recognisably Scottish and I knew the Duke of Wellington was the one statue I wanted my daughter to see over here."I've bought a bag with the Duke embroidered on it - it's really fun."She added that it was impressive the Scotland fans had managed to find so many traffic cones.Locals say the Duke of Wellington statue is now as important as famous landmarks [BBC]Marcos moved to Glasgow 10 years ago but was keen to show his friends, who are visiting from his home country of Spain, the iconic Duke of Wellington statue. "It's really cool and I'm happy the council gave up removing the cone," he said."I hadn't seen it before I came here but I knew about it and it is absolutely something that everyone can recognise as Scottish now."It reflects how funny and friendly people are in Glasgow."Many locals and tourists in the city centre agreed the cone demonstrates the best of Glasgow's sense of humour and brings the country together.Boston becomes 'mini-Scotland' before World Cup openerTartan Army feels the heat in Boston as World Cup kicks offJubilation as Scotland fans celebrate first World Cup win in 36 years

Casemiro, Ancelotti's lieutenant and symbol of Brazil troubles
Casemiro was brought back into the Brazil team by Carlo Ancelotti but looked off the pace against Morocco (Dan Mullan)Recalled by Carlo Ancelotti, Casemiro became an untouchable figure for Brazil -- until a disappointing World Cup start made him a prime target for criticism at home. The former Real Madrid player, one of the leaders of the squad chasing a sixth world title, looked destined as the man to anchor Brazil's midfield at the tournament after an impressive final season with Manchester United. But his limp display in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Morocco, in which he was replaced at half-time, has left the 34-year-old enduring his lowest moment since first pulling on the famous yellow shirt in 2011.The performance has also strained the bond between Brazilian fans and Ancelotti, hailed as the man who could lead the five-time champions back to the summit for the first time since 2002.In his first squad selection, Ancelotti surprised many by recalling Casemiro, a five-time Champions League winner with Madrid during a nine-year spell in Spain. The holding midfielder had been out of the Brazil picture for more than 18 months, but Ancelotti revived his international career, starting him in 12 of the 13 matches he has overseen.Casemiro captained the side four times, scoring twice and providing two assists. While Brazil continued to show defensive frailties -- conceding 12 goals in those 13 matches -- his presence brought balance to the midfield.Ancelotti sees Casemiro as an on-field extension of the coach, giving the team structure and controlling the rhythm in possession."There are no players in Brazil with the same characteristics as Casemiro," Ancelotti said last year. When some suggested two years ago that Casemiro's legs had gone during a turbulent patch at United, Ancelotti did not share that view.- Biggest disappointment -However, in the opening match of his third World Cup, Casemiro looked off the pace, out of sync with Bruno Guimaraes and struggled to recover possession, a hallmark of his game."He was the player who disappointed most on debut," former Brazil great Romario said on his YouTube channel."Casemiro is the coach's favourite -— that's normal -— but given what he represents for the coach and the team, he really disappointed."Casemiro, who admitted on arrival in the United States that Brazil were "a little step behind" the main favourites, was completely upstaged by 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi against Morocco. He said Ancelotti explained that his premature substitution was to protect him after he picked up a booking. Fabinho replaced him and provided greater solidity alongside Guimaraes.Questions now surround whether Casemiro will start Friday's Group C match against Haiti in Philadelphia. The Caribbean side, appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, pushed Scotland before losing 1-0 in Boston."In Brazil we always want the best, we want to win, but it still depends on us," Casemiro said after the opener.Recovering his form is crucial as his club future remains uncertain following his departure from United.Reports claim Casemiro has agreed terms to join Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, but the move is on hold due to a compensation dispute with another MLS club, Los Angeles Galaxy, a source close to the player told AFP.According to the source, Galaxy are claiming discovery rights -- a mechanism that grants MLS clubs priority to negotiate with players. In this case, it concerns Ancelotti's embattled right-hand man with Brazil.raa/dam/mw/pi

JD Vance says sports teams “don’t have to do” Pride Nights anymore because “Trump won”
Vice President J.D. Vance wrote a social media message seemingly supporting an Major League Baseball player who wrote a Bible verse on their baseball cap during a June 12 Pride Night event at the Oracle Park ballpark in San Francisco, California. The image that Vance commented on showed San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Laden Roupp, who wrote Gen 9:11-16, a Bible verse about the rainbow, on his black cap bearing his team’s logo in rainbow colors. The verse, which follows God’s promise to never again flood the world for its sinful ways, says, “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the Earth.” Related Trump sparked fury like no other when he removed Stonewall’s Pride flag. Here’s why it hit so hard. Sports Illustrated (SI) posted the image of Roupp and noted that he was one of three Giants players who wrote Bible verses on their Pride caps as well as that the MLB had issued a warning to the players. In response to SI‘s post, Vance wrote, “Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore.” It’s unclear what exactly Vance thinks “we don’t have to do” anymore: hold baseball team Pride Nights, write Bible verses on ballcaps, or warn MLB players who break the league’s uniform rules by altering their apparel (as the MLB did in this case). Insights for the LGBTQ+ community Subscribe to our briefing for insights into how politics impacts the LGBTQ+ community and more. Subscribe to our Newsletter today It’s most likely that Vance meant that sports teams don’t have to hold Pride Nights or have players wear Pride-themed gear. The current presidential administration has largely sought to eliminate all LGBTQ+ recognition in its crusade to end all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, as well as its ongoing empowerment of anti-LGBTQ+ Christian conservatives. Despite Vance’s vague assertion, 29 out of 30 MLB teams are holding Pride Night events this year, Outsports reported; the only team not doing so is the Texas Rangers. Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore https://t.co/Dsl5DH2obf— JD Vance (@JDVance) June 16, 2026 After the Pride Night in question, Roupp deflected criticism about his Bible verse by saying, “There’s no hate at all. It’s just what I stand for and what I stand in. I believe in God, and that’s me.” When asked how he would respond to an LGBTQ+ critic of his Pride Night protest, he said, “I would push them to read the Bible,” as if only non-Christian queer people would take issue with his actions. He added, “We live in a country where you’re welcome to believe what you want. There’s a freedom of speech and stuff like that, so that’s really all I have to say about that. I’m just thankful that God has put me in this situation and that I can go out and share his kingdom.” MLB issued a warning to the Giants players, saying that the league’s uniform regulations prohibit any “alterations, writing or illustrations.” Outsports reported that there is no evidence that the MLB has ever fined a player for a uniform violation. While the Giants could independently discipline its players, no reports indicate that they have done so. In a statement, the team said, “We understand that the choices by individual players have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community and we are sorry for that.” After MLB issued a warning to the players, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent a June 16 letter to MLB, saying that the league “must answer for what appears to be a pattern of discrimination” against Christian players. Fox News recently accused MLB of launching an “attack on faith”, with contributor Mary Katharine Ham saying, “It’s not tolerant, and by the way, support for LGBTQ causes has been going precipitously down because of this behavior. It used to be a live and let live argument, which is something most Americans were very friendly to, and then it became ‘Bake the cake and wear the hat, you bigot.'” While Ham is correct that public and corporate support for LGBTQ+ causes has declined somewhat recently, the decline is largely due to federal, state, and local Republican attacks against companies and organizations that have LGBTQ+ inclusive DEI policies as well as right-wing campaigns targeting any groups that ally with the LGBTQ+ community. Despite this, a recent GLAAD study showed that most Americans support brands that back Pride and also politicians who oppose anti-LGBTQ+ attacks. Tiago Splitter takes over as Bulls coach and promises team will compete every night
CHICAGO (AP) — Growing up in Brazil, Tiago Splitter used to watch Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the middle of the night.“Hidden from my parents and at 1 a.m., watching M.J. games and rooting for the Bulls,” Splitter said with a wry grin. That was the most successful period in franchise history. Now the Bulls are hoping to start another winning era with Splitter on the sideline. The 41-year-old Splitter was formally introduced on Wednesday as the 25th coach in franchise history. He brings a wealth of experience that includes seven years in the NBA as a player and a challenging season as the interim coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. The addition of Splitter is the team's most significant move since Bryson Graham took over as executive vice president of basketball operations on May 4. The 6-foot-11 Splitter emerged from a crowded field of candidates that reportedly included Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori, Atlanta Hawks assistant Ryan Schmidt and Wes Unseld Jr., who was on Chicago's coaching staff last season. While describing why Splitter was the choice, Graham praised the coach's competitiveness and his ability to connect with players.“We are at the ground floor,” Graham said. “And so when you have someone that has a vision that aligns with yours, that knows how you want to play, and how to build a program, we just, I mean, we couldn’t be more excited.”Splitter joined Chauncey Billups’ staff in Portland last June. He was elevated from assistant to interim coach when Billups was arrested in October in a federal takedown of a sprawling gambling operation. Billups has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering.Splitter coached Portland to a 42-40 record and a five-game loss to San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs. It was the first playoff appearance and first time the Trail Blazers finished with a winning record since the 2020-21 season.“It wasn’t an easy situation,” Splitter said. “I think, you know, as the season went to the finish, to the end, we almost forgot about it and that was the great thing. ... That was most important thing for me, just like leaving the outside noise out of the picture and focusing on basketball and by the end, you’re having like a clear goal and finish the way we finished.”Splitter declined to discuss his departure from Portland.“I think there’s too many things being said already and I think that’s enough,” he said. “I’m past that and I want to think about the Chicago Bulls.”Splitter spent time with San Antonio, Atlanta and Philadelphia during his playing career. He was selected by the Spurs in the first round of the 2007 draft, and he helped the team win an NBA title in 2014.He worked for Brooklyn for five seasons from 2018-23, first as a pro scout and then as an assistant coach. He was an assistant for Houston for one year before coaching Paris Basketball Club to a French Cup championship during the 2024-25 season. That experience — both playing and coaching — was an appealing attribute, Graham said.“He’s got a phenomenal story,” he said.Splitter is replacing Billy Donovan, who resigned after six seasons. The Bulls had conversations with Donovan about returning, but he decided to step aside rather than work with a new front office.Chicago allowed 121.5 points per game this season, ranking 28th overall in the NBA. It finished with a 31-51 record while missing the playoffs for the fourth straight year. The Bulls pick No. 4 and No. 15 in next week's draft, and they also have plenty of salary-cap space going into free agency. But Splitter offered a diplomatic answer when asked about expectations for next season.“I can guarantee you one thing: We’re going to compete every night,” he said. “And we’re going to have high standards with everything that we do.”___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/nba

Harry Kane ties England’s record for World Cup goals in 4-2 win over Croatia
England's Harry Kane (9) celebrates after scoring a goal during the World Cup Group L soccer match between England and Croatia in Arlington, Texas, near Dallas, Wednesday, June 17, 2026. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)2026-06-17T22:10:54Z ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Harry Kane scored twice to equal the English record for World Cup goals, Jude Bellingham added another two minutes into the second half and England beat Croatia 4-2 on Wednesday.Martin Baturina and Petar Musa answered each of Kane’s first-half goals in a rematch of the 2018 semifinal game won by Croatia. Musa’s goal came on the final play before the whistle ending the first half. The even score didn’t last long once play resumed.Bellingham took a long pass and stayed clear of the defender the rest of the way, sending a shot past Dominik Livakovic and in off the far post. Marcus Rashford padded the lead in the 85th minute.Kane, who won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia by scoring six times, is up to 10 World Cup goals, tying Gary Lineker’s mark from the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. The 32-year-old striker’s first goal came on his second chance on a penalty kick after Livakovic’s save on the first try was nullified by a video review that showed both his feet off the goal line as Kane was striking the ball. Kane went the same way toward the right post with the second attempt, while Livakovic lunged the other direction, to his right. The penalty was called when Luka Modric, the 40-year-old midfielder who extended his Croatian record by appearing in his fifth World Cup, kicked Noni Madueke in the thigh.Kane matched Lineker’s mark when the Bayern Munich striker easily beat Livakovic with a powerful header off a corner kick from Declan Rice. Kane has 81 international goals. Read More Bellingham almost immediately had another great scoring chance soon after his seventh international goal. Livakovic made that save and about a half-dozen more in a matter of minutes during a frenetic English attack.Musa plays for Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas, which has its home games about 40 miles from AT&T Stadium. The retractable roof venue that is home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys is giving World Cup fans an air-conditioned reprieve from the muggy Texas heat, this time for white-clad English fans and Croatian supporters who were mostly wearing their country’s familiar red-and-white checkered uniforms, not the blue kits the players had on. Musa tracked a header from Ivan Perisic and put a one-timer past Jordan Pickford, who was also beaten in the 36th minute by Baturina. That shot into the left corner ticked off Pickford’s hand.England next plays Ghana in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in Group L on Tuesday, the same day Croatia plays Panama in Toronto.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

Korea coach slams 'unfortunate' drone incident at training
South Korea's head coach Hong Myung-bo said he expected a challenging clash against World Cup co-hosts Mexico (Ulises RUIZ)Coach Hong Myung-bo on Wednesday said a drone was spotted flying over South Korea's training session before their eagerly awaited clash with World Cup co-hosts Mexico, calling the incident "unfortunate."Victory in South Korea's match against Mexico in Guadalajara on Thursday would virtually guarantee progress to the knockout rounds, and put the winners in pole position to top Group A, which also contains South Africa and Czechia. But the Koreans' preparations on Tuesday were interrupted by the incident, which prompted fears of spying, with reports stating that the drone was brought down by Mexico's military."Yesterday during our training there was a drone in the sky, and we came to know about the fact. But fortunately it was right before we practiced our tactics, so it did not impact us significantly," said the coach."But, while we were preparing for the match, that was the most important timing. So, what happened was unfortunate," he told a press conference.Mexican federal authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while officials in the state of Jalisco told AFP they had no formal record of the incident.Drone flights have been banned over stadiums and facilities hosting World Cup matches and events in Mexico, as well as the United States.Korean coach Hong said he expected a challenging clash against Mexico, praising the opponents' "creative" midfield and telling reporters he expected a vocal home crowd to play a role."We fully understand that it's going to be a match with the home team, and we know that that's going to give benefits to the home team," he said."But my players have experienced such matches before, so it will be different tomorrow, and we need to control the rhythm and the flow of the match."Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the tournament's opening game last week, while South Korea came from behind to defeat Czechia 2-1.amz/rcw

Golden Knights surprisingly had a John Tortorella reason for hiring Ryan Craig as HC
Golden Knights surprisingly had a John Tortorella reason for hiring Ryan Craig as HC originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Usually, teams that have gotten so close to the Stanley Cup rarely change things up. They want to explore the team chemistry more and just patch up holes in the culture to get over the hump. The Vegas Golden Knights know better than this. They may have seen John Tortorella take over well for Coach Bruce Cassidy but this did not guarantee a long-term deal. Ryan Craig was instead given the role but their previous head coach still played a role on why the AHL head coach and former assistant took over the reins.Golden Knights unveil Tortorella reason for hiring CraigA lot of NHL fans may not know this but Coach Ryan Craig used to play for Coach John Tortorella. From 2005 to 2008. Craig was on the same Tampa Bay Lightning squad that Tortorella coached. So, there needed to be a big endorsement from the tenured head honcho before the Golden Knights hired their new one. General manager Kelly McCrimmon unveiled how Tortorella became part of why they hired Craig as the next head coach, via NHL.com."Interestingly, Tortorella had Ryan Craig as a player. He's got the same opinion of Ryan Craig that most people do. I know he was disappointed because he did want to coach our team next year, but I know also he's got a lot of regard for Ryan and a lot of respect for him. We thank 'Torts' for the guidance he provided our team since joining the organization in March. When the decision was made to bring Torts to Vegas, we needed an immediate impact to help us at a pivotal point in the season," the Golden Knights general manager said. "Torts' experience and leadership proved to be the boost that we were looking for, helping guide us to the Stanley Cup Final."Notably, there is still a chance that Tortorella lands with an NHL squad in the coming season. The Edmonton Oilers have yet to find a replacement for Kris Knoblauch after their disappointing first-round exit despite having Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard. For the Golden Knights, hopefully, the endorsement and respect that Coach Tortorella dished out to Coach Craig translates into winning another Stanley Cup in the coming years.More Golden Knights News:Kelly McCrimmon reveals why Golden Knights hired Ryan Craig as next head coachWhy Golden Knights aren't bringing back John Tortorella as head coachGolden Knights' Jack Eichel turned into Ben Simmons during Stanley Cup playoffs

A 'nasty' new front in Tennessee, and Jeffery Simmons is ready to live in the backfield
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — New Tennessee cornerback Alontae Taylor looks at the Titans ' revamped defensive line and one word comes to mind. Nasty. All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons has had an offseason to familiarize himself with what new coach Robert Saleh wants with a defensive scheme now asking the veteran and all his teammates to attack opposing offenses rather than rely on technique fighting through double-teams. “That’s my game," Simmons said Wednesday. "I like to play on the other side of the line of scrimmage.”Linebacker Cody Barton believes the scheme change will be huge for Simmons. “Jeff is one of the best to do it, and he’s just going to be causing havoc every play,” Barton said. Simmons had a career-best 11 sacks last season. A second straight 3-14 record led to Saleh being hired as the Titans' latest new head coach, and he has a strong record of putting together top NFL defenses by freeing up players to read quarterbacks and attack. Saleh said Wednesday that San Francisco switched in 2019 from a six-technique and a more old school 4-3 front. He said they brought in Kris Kocurek, a disciple of longtime defensive line coach Jim Washburn whose career included 12 seasons with the Titans where he rotated linemen and pushed them to be faster off the ball. That 2019 49ers' defense wound up third in fewest yards allowed per game and second against the pass helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl.Offseason additions to the defenseThe Titans spent the most money in free agency to help play this new defensive style. The Titans traded for defensive end Jeremiah Johnson II, signed veterans like John Franklin-Myers and Solomon Thomas for their toughness and traded back into the first round to draft lineman Keldric Faulk. “I imagine a guy like Jeffery will enjoy playing next to him because very similar in how they attack things and how they approach things," defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said of Franklin-Myers.Tennessee also signed Taylor and cornerback Cor'Dale Flott and Joshua Williams along with veteran safety Tony Adams to anchor the secondary. Linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. was a second-round draft selection to join Barton and third-year linebacker Cedric Gray.Rotation designed to stay fresh and fastThe defensive line will set the tone with a planned rotation limiting Simmons and his fellow linemen to 60% of the snaps. Saleh, who plans to also call the defensive plays in games, said the payoff comes in the fourth quarter when the Titans hopefully have worn out opposing offensive lines. That also keeps the Titans fresher and faster.“The faster the rush is, the faster we can get our feet in the ground, the faster we can anticipate where the ball is going,” Saleh said. “It also dictates whether or not the coordinator and the quarterback can call plays that are deeper developing and whether or not the quarterback can hold it.”Elbow no longer an issue for SimmonsComing out of games won't be easy for Simmons. The four-time Pro Bowler prides himself on staying on the field, and Simmons got his right elbow cleaned up this offseason after being unable to straighten out his arm fully for well over two and half years and forced to wear a brace during games. “My goal to come into this season is just to make sure I’m in the best shape of my life,” Simmons said.Contract status also not at top of the listSimmons also is in line for a contract extension with his current deal good through 2027. He signed a four-year extension in April 2023. As the Titans wrapped up their offseason Wednesday with the last open session of a mandatory minicamp, Simmons sounded focused on what's next on the field.“This organization been nothing but good to me, so I’m not so focused on the contract right now," Simmons said. "Like I said, my goal this offseason is let me go work my tail off and get ready for training camp.”___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

And one recent development indicates the team is now considering putting a brand-new player in at his defensive position.FORBES | By Peter ChawagaDodgers’ World Series Champ Offers 2-Word Response On Reaching Career Best With CardinalsToronto Blue Jays Weigh Vladimir Guerrero Jr Replacement As Slump PersistsAhead of a recent game against the Boston Red Sox, Blue Jays catcher Brandon Valenzuela was spotted taking ground balls at first base, a notable development given his primary position behind the plate.“Brandon Valenzuela is taking some grounders at 1B today in Boston,” The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon reported on X, formerly Twitter. “We’ve seen him do this a few (times) this year. Would be a way for Blue Jays to get him and (Alejandro) Kirk in the lineup.”Valenzuela has been an offensive sparkplug for the Blue Jays after receiving a call up to replace the injured Kirk behind the dish. But with Kirk back, slotting in Valenzuela at first base could allow the team to keep his hot bat in the lineup and perhaps offer Guerrero a bit of a rest at designated hitter as he works through his power outage. But the move is a bit of a surprise, as Valenzuela has never started a big-league game at first and has made more than six-times as many starts at catcher than he does at first base in the minors.FORBES | By Peter ChawagaGiants Skipper Addresses Rafael Devers Tension After Red Sox IssuesToronto Blue Jays Superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr Remains KeyUltimately, however, no lineup adjustment will matter as much as Guerrero rediscovering the power stroke that has made him one of baseball's premier hitters.“More than anything, though, the Blue Jays need Vlad — who sat out Saturday and Sunday against the (New York) Yankees with back tightness — to turn back into the fearsome slugger we’ve come to expect if they are going to make a second-half run, even with the injuries they’ve seen thus far to five different starting pitchers,” Mike Lupica wrote for MLB.com. “Guerrero has just three home runs and 27 RBIs.”Those numbers stand in stark contrast to the production Blue Jays fans have come to expect from their franchise cornerstone. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Trump admin sues world’s leading trans medical group, alleging financial blackmail of parents
The Trump administration took the next step in its attack on gender-affirming care for trans youth on Wednesday, filing a lawsuit against the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the leading global organization focused on transgender health and the primary developer of clinical guidelines for gender-affirming medicine. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, follows an earlier Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigation of WPATH over the same claims in the lawsuit, which accuses the 46-year-old organization of defrauding parents for the financial benefit of health care professionals. Related Judge halts Trump’s “retaliatory” investigations of major trans medical groups The FTC, which is not a medical regulator, brought the suit, joined by Republican attorneys general in Texas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Alaska. “Today, the FTC filed a lawsuit against WPATH alleging that the organization made false and unsubstantiated claims regarding the necessity, effectiveness and safety of puberty blockers, hormones and sex-change surgeries,” said FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson in a statement announcing the filing. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today WPATH “has provided the means for medical providers to make false and unsubstantiated claims to parents in order to sell pediatric medical transition services,” the FTC alleges. Ken Paxton, a MAGA loyalist who was endorsed by President Donald Trump in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat, signed on to the suit in his role as that state’s attorney general. “Any group that illegally promotes irreversible, life-altering ‘transitioning’ procedures to kids as safe and necessary will face the full force of the law for harming children,” Paxton was quoted in the FTC announcement. “We will not allow WPATH or any other organization to illegally promote or perform dangerous ‘transitioning’ procedures on our kids that leave them with permanent trauma and lifelong health consequences.” Among the complaint’s allegations, the FTC says WPATH deceptively promoted the benefits of “breast amputation” and “penis removal” for trans minors (even though such procedures are almost never performed on minors); failed to disclose the side effects “cross-sex” hormones for minors, including “pelvic pain, clitoral discomfort, vaginal pain, inability to orgasm, incontinence and erectile pain”; and blackmailed parents into the organization’s “profit” scheme by asking whether they “would rather have a live daughter or a dead son,” in the case of gender dysphoria diagnoses for boys. According to the FTC, parents in search of life-saving treatment for their children are dupes in a decades-long grift perpetrated by doctors associated with WPATH and the organization itself. Doctors’ characterization of gender-affirming care as “life-saving” is only a means of forcing insurance companies to pay for the treatments, thereby profiting health care professionals and WPATH, according to the suit. The FTC joined Trump’s anti-trans crusade last July when it sought public comment from consumers “deceived” by gender-affirming care providers. Then in January, the FTC accused WPATH and the Endocrine Society of defrauding consumers over their claims of the efficacy of gender-affirming care, and launched investigations demanding internal records and communications from the groups. The two organizations sued in February, claiming the FTC was retaliating against each for its protected speech in support of medically caring for trans youth. The judge in the case, James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, agreed, granting preliminary injunctions in May that halted both investigations, which he characterized as based on “retaliatory motive.” “On this preliminary record, with extensive evidence of animus and wafer-thin justifications lacking evidentiary support, it finds that WPATH is likely to demonstrate a causal link between its protected speech and the FTC’s issuance of the CID [civil investigative demand],” the judge wrote. Research by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law indicates nearly 1.5 million young people aged 13 to 24 identify as transgender in the U.S. Approximately 40% of trans and nonbinary youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, and 10% to 14% made an actual attempt, according to The Trevor Project’s latest survey on the mental health of LGBTQ+ young people. Numerous studies show the benefit of gender-affirming care on the overall wellbeing of trans youth. A 2026 study found that trans youth who get hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are less suicidal. A 2025 study found that gender-affirming medical care has positive effects on the mental health and psychosocial functioning of trans youth. A 2024 study found that 97% of trans youth didn’t regret transitioning, even a decade after receiving such care, and another study that same year found that only 1% of trans teens detransition. A 2023 study also found that HRT improves mental health for trans youth. Here’s how Utah basketball’s schedule for next season is shaping up
Utah head coach Alex Jensen calls out to his players during an NCAA basketball game against BYU held at the Marriott Center in Provo on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026. | Isaac Hale, Deseret News Next year’s schedule is slowly coming together for the University of Utah men’s basketball team.In addition to a variety of reports on nonconference matchups, last week the Big 12 announced its scheduling matrix for the 2026-27 season — giving a glimpse at who the Runnin’ Utes will play in their 18-game conference schedule. While there is still plenty to be set in stone, here’s a look at how Utah’s schedule is shaping up for the second season under head coach Alex Jensen.Utah basketball’s 2026-27 nonconference scheduleBased on various insider reports, here’s a look at where Utah’s nonconference schedule stands. The University of Utah hasn’t officially announced its nonconference schedule — last offseason, the school announced this portion of the schedule in mid-August.Nov. 5 — vs. Towson, Huntsman Center (via Runnin’ Hoops Podcast’s Andrew Crowley)Nov. 10 — vs. Weber State, Huntsman Center (via Alex Rosinski)Nov. 17 — vs. Eastern Washington, Huntsman Center (via Rosinski)Nov. 20, 22 (tentative dates) — Charleston Classic, TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina (two games) Dec. 2 — vs. California, Huntsman Center (via Runnin’ Hoops Podcast)Dec. 9 — vs. Cal Baptist, Huntsman Center (via CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein)Dec. 13 — vs. Abilene Christian, Huntsman Center (via Runnin’ Hoops Podcast)Dec. 22 — vs. Southern Utah, Huntsman Center (via Rosinski)TBD — vs. Washington, Huntsman Center — a return game of a home-and-home with the HuskiesBeginning with the 2026-27 campaign, college basketball teams can play 32 games during the regular season.Given that the Big 12 is playing an 18-game conference schedule and there are already 10 reported nonconference contests scheduled for the Utes, that leaves room for potentially four other nonconference games on Utah’s schedule. There are already a handful of games outside of conference play that will allow Utah to show growth after the program finished last in the Big 12 a season ago.In late May, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported that six of the eight teams playing in this year’s Charleston Classic will be Utah, fellow Big 12 school Oklahoma State, Dayton (A-10), Northwestern (Big Ten), Minnesota (Big Ten) and Virginia Tech (ACC), with the other two spots still to be determined. There will be two four-team pods at the Charleston Classic, which is typically played the weekend before Thanksgiving, and each team will play two games. The Charleston Classic will serve as a solid gauge for how Utah, heading into its third season in the Big 12, matches up again power conference competition. There are two other power league opponents reportedly on the Utes’ nonconference schedule at this point as well — California and Washington are both reportedly headed to the Huntsman Center in a return contest of a home-and-home series between Utah and each of the two schools. The Golden Bears, led by former Utah Valley coach Mark Madsen, went 22-12 last season, ended the year No. 72 in the NET rankings and played in the NIT. Cal beat Utah 79-72 in Berkeley in early December. The Huskies, under former Utah State coach Danny Sprinkle, went 16-17 a year ago, which included beating the Utes 74-65 in Seattle in late December.Among other nonconference opponents, Utah will reportedly host Weber State for a second straight season. The Utes had to rally to beat Weber State in overtime at the Huntsman last year, and this offseason, Utah added Wildcats transfer big man Malek Gomma. Two of the most recent reports regarding Utah’s nonconference games include a contest against in-state rival Southern Utah — the two schools’ first meeting in three years — and a fourth straight season hosting Eastern Washington.Utah basketball’s 2026-27 Big 12 scheduleWhile dates and times for each of the Utes’ 18 regular-season Big 12 conference games will be released at a later date, the program’s conference opponents for the 2026-27 season were announced last week.Utes’ Big 12 home gamesBYUColoradoOklahoma StateBaylorCincinnatiKansasKansas StateTexas Tech West VirginiaUtes’ Big 12 road gamesBYUColoradoOklahoma StateArizonaArizona StateUCFHoustonIowa StateTCUUtah will face BYU, Colorado and Oklahoma State twice, as the only three Big 12 teams it will play home-and-home contests against. After sweeping the Utes last year, the Cougars, who lost in the NCAA Tournament’s first round against Texas in the 2025-26 season, are on a three-game winning streak against their rival. Before that, though, Utah had beaten BYU two straight years at the Huntsman Center. Two teams who made the NCAAs last year, Kansas and Texas Tech, will also come to the Huntsman — the last time the Jayhawks made their way to Salt Lake City, Utah upset Kansas in Craig Smith’s final season two years ago.The majority of the Utes’ Big 12 road games will come against programs that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago and are among the teams expected to represent the league in the NCAAs yet again. That includes a road game against Arizona, which advanced to the Final Four last season.Six of Utah’s nine Big 12 road games come against schools who made the NCAA Tournament last year, a group that also includes Houston, Iowa State, TCU and UCF. In two years playing in the Big 12, Utah has won just two road conference games — last year at West Virginia, and two seasons ago against TCU.The Utes are coming off a year where they went 10-22 overall and 2-16 in league play in Jensen’s first season as coach — that includes marks of 1-8 at home in Big 12 action and 1-8 on the road.Through two seasons in the league, Utah has gone 10-28 in conference regular-season play — 8-11 at home and 2-17 on the road — while being winless in its two league tournament appearances.

'India A was the stepping stone': Gurnoor Brar credits domestic pathway for seamless transition
TimesofIndia.com in Lucknow: Gurnoor Brar may have quickly earned attention for his pace, hard lengths and ability to trouble batters at the international level, but the right-arm pacer believes his journey is rooted firmly in the domestic circuit and the India A structure that bridges the gap between first-class cricket and the national team.Brar was once again the pick of the bowlers for India as the six-foot-five-inch pacer picked up three wickets in the second ODI against Afghanistan at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday. He had also claimed three wickets in the rain-curtailed first ODI in Dharamsala. In the post-match press conference in Lucknow, Brar was asked about the reputation he carries as a fast bowler capable of relentlessly hitting the deck. The 26-year-old, however, was quick to downplay labels and numbers."I don't think much about reputation or expectations. I believe in myself and in the work I'm doing. Whether it's bowling hard lengths or fuller lengths, I focus on what I need to do rather than the results," Brar said after India's massive 170-run victory. For the Punjab pacer, consistency of preparation remains more important than match returns."Preparation matters the most and whether I can repeat my processes consistently every day. Even in these two matches, I feel I can do better. I know I can bowl better than I did today, and hopefully I'll improve in the coming games."A significant part of that development, according to Brar, came through the India A setup. The pacer described it as a crucial step in his progression and credited domestic cricket for giving him the platform to dream bigger."The India A setup was a big stepping stone. Performances in the Ranji Trophy can take you to India A, the Duleep Trophy and the Irani Cup. When I got the India A call-up, I was very happy," he said.More importantly, Brar found that the methods that brought him success in domestic cricket remained effective at a higher level."The same things that worked for me in domestic cricket, bowling fast, hitting hard lengths and swinging the ball, I tried to replicate at India A level as well."You miss, I hit! 🔥An absolute peach of a yorker from Gurnoor Brar to get his third wicket 🤌Updates ▶️ https://t.co/JYJ5l44iJ6#TeamIndia | #INDvAFG | @IDFCFIRSTBankpic.twitter.com/QtaH9BEBop— BCCI (@BCCI) June 17, 2026The India A dressing room also provided him access to experienced international cricketers. One of those was Mohammed Siraj, whose guidance proved valuable."Siraj bhai was there too, and I spoke to him a lot," Brar revealed. His learning curve was further accelerated at Gujarat Titans, where he spent time observing and interacting with some of the country's leading fast bowlers."The environment at Gujarat Titans helped me a lot. There are experienced people like Ashish Nehra sir, Siraj bhai, Prasidh bhai and Ishant Sharma. You learn so much from them," he said. While opportunities were not always guaranteed, Brar used every day as a learning experience."I was waiting for my opportunity, but at the same time I was observing what they did well and where they made mistakes. My focus was always on learning as much as possible so that whenever I got my chance, I could perform better."That growth has also reflected in his death-bowling skills. Brar stressed the importance of yorkers in modern cricket and said it is an area every fast bowler must work on."I think every fast bowler should work on yorkers. I also spend a lot of time on death bowling and improving my yorkers because they're very important, especially against quality hitters."Even after a successful start in Indian colours, Brar remains far from satisfied."I never get satisfied. I'm happy that I performed well, but I want to do more for Team India. I want to keep improving and contributing."Brar is tipped as someone who could be useful in South African conditions at the 2027 ODI World Cup, and the pacer has made the right start to his international career.

Phillies Option Andrew Painter to AAA
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 17: Andrew Painter #24 of the Philadelphia Phillies throws a pitch in the top of the first inning against the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park on June 17, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images) | Getty Images After Wednesday’s 12-4 defeat to the Miami Marlins where Andrew Painter surrendered six runs in just two innings of work, the Phillies will be shaking up the back of their rotation by optioning Andrew Painter to AAA. The Phillies have tried everything with Painter. They’ve tweaked his usage in certain starts to limit fastball damage, they’ve used an opener, and they gave him 14 appearances to figure this out. With a 7.06 ERA in 65.0 innings pitched, nothing stuck long enough. Through roughly the first two and a half months of the season, the Phillies have cycled through their number five and six starting pitching options from the big league roster. They went into the season with Taijuan Walker making starts with Zack Wheeler injured but he was released after just 22.2 innings of work because he had an ERA over 9.Now with Painter out, there is no clear answer for what the Phillies will do on the rotation’s fifth turn. Matt Gelb wrote that former Atlanta Brave and Chicago White Sox Bryse Wilson had triggered his upward mobility clause in his minor league contract, which could force the Phillies to add him to the roster. In 54.1 innings with the Iron Pigs, Wilson carries a 6.29 ERA with 2.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Alan Rangel is already on the 40-man roster and pitched for the Phillies earlier this year when they had Kyle Backhus open for the aforementioned Walker in the middle of their ten game losing streak. Rangel has looked solid, albeit not super inspiring with the Pigs, carrying a 3.74 ERA in 65.0 innings. Maybe the Phillies try bullpen games to patch things until the trade deadline. The bullpen lost a key leverage arm in Brad Keller to the injured list but have built up plenty of depth through minor league signings and waiver claims. They have the options to make it work even if it’s not an ideal scenario to go through every fifth day. Whatever path the Phillies go down, it will be without Andrew Painter, as he heads down to Lehigh Valley to figure out who he is moving forward.

Arsenal prepare Bradley Barcola bid with PSG winger among key targets
Arsenal are looking into the necessary details before lodging a bid for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. The 23-year-old has continued his sparkling form from last season for the European champions after scoring on his World Cup debut in France’s 3-1 over Senegal.Barcola has become one of the game’s brightest stars, with Liverpool also thought to have tracked his progress, with Andoni Iraola’s side thought to be in the market for two wide forwards this summer. However, Mikel Arteta’s main priority this summer is to elevate the level of the attack and Barcola has now been highlighted as a target that could bring an upgrade to the starting line-up, as well as representing a realistic deal.PSG’s preference would be to keep the attacker but they are also open to reshaping the attack themselves. That’s because they hold an interest in two existing Arsenal targets in Atletico Madrid and Argentina striker Julian Alvarez and Aston Villa and England midfielder Morgan Rogers.Bradley Barcola #12 of France celebrates scoring his team's second goal (Getty)There is yet a possibility that Arsenal buy both Rogers and an attacker, such as Barcola, which underlines Arteta’s insistence on going to the next level, despite winning the Premier League and reaching the Champions League final, only to lose to Barcola’s PSG.The French winger was impressive in New Jersey with Les Bleus proving to slick in attack for Senegal during a sizzling second half. His delightful chipped finish doubled France’s lead and split Kylian Mbappe’s brace in the Group I victory. And Barcola could challenge Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli and Belgian Leandro Trossard to start on the left for the Gunners.

Canada players say they need 'swagger' and 'arrogance' to snag historic first World Cup win
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canada is ready to set aside its reputation for politeness, at least during the World Cup.With a chance to make history at home, after decades of World Cup disappointment, Canada’s players are talking less about manners and more about mentality.“I don’t think it’s always a bad thing to play with arrogance,” midfielder Niko Sigur said. “I think we’re at our best when we play with that swagger.”Canada opened Group B play with a draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, earning the country's first World Cup point. On Thursday at BC Place against Qatar, Canada will be seeking its first victory.“I think if we’re at our best and we’re all together, including guys off the bench and the starters,” Sigur said, “that we can give them a lot of trouble.”To make toppling Qatar more of challenge, Canada will have to do it short-handed.Alphonso Davies, Canada’s captain and its lone World Cup goal scorer before Cyle Larin found the net last week, might not be available after missing the opener with a lingering hamstring injury. Forward Promise David is recovering from a hip injury and Marcelo Flores, one of Canada's top performers during qualifying, was ruled out of the tournament in May with a knee injury.Defender Moïse Bombito has not played since suffering a broken leg in October. Before that, he had started every match during coach Jesse Marsch’s two-year tenure. The injuries have created opportunities for others, including Jayden Nelson, who replaced Flores on the roster after netting a stoppage-time goal against Uzbekistan earlier this month.“We know we have the weapons" needed to win, midfielder Stephen Eustáquio said. That confidence has become a recurring theme for Canada. Rather than focusing on the pressure of hosting, players have embraced the moment."You could use the word ‘pressure,’” defender Richie Laryea said. “I think we could use the word ‘ready.’”Laryea’s perspective reflects the attitude Marsch has tried to establish since taking the job. Canada has become known for its high-intensity pressing system and willingness to challenge opponents physically.“We’re always on the front foot,” Laryea said. “I think that coincides pretty well with getting in people’s faces.”Yet players understand there is a fine line between playing with an edge and going too far.Defenders Luc de Fougerolles and Alistair Johnston each carry yellow cards into the Qatar match. If teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored — which is where all four teams in Group B currently stand — FIFA’s fair-play system acts as a tiebreaker, meaning disciplinary records could influence who advances from the group.Four years ago, Qatar became the first host country to lose all three group matches. But after watching Qatar’s opening 1-1 draw against Switzerland, Sigur said Qatar should be taken seriously, pointing to its focus across 90 minutes.“It’s the World Cup,” forward Ali Ahmed said. “You can’t play this game on paper.”More than 50,000 fans are expected at BC Place for a match that could become one of the most significant in Canadian soccer history, and players have repeatedly referenced the energy they hope Vancouver can provide.“I think losing my voice will be a good call,” said Canada fan Adam Lovell, a member of a supporters' club called The Voyageurs. “I’ll try to set the tone with the fan culture.”Eustáquio is aiming for an aggressive start fueled by a sense of urgency to give the home crowd something to cheer.“Hopefully,” Eustáquio said, “that takes out the little bit of power that Qatar has.”He knows this is no time to be polite.___Drew Renner is a student in the University of Georgia’s Carmical Sports Media Institute.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup

UFC Freedom 250 brought loads of violence to the White House lawn Sunday in Washington DC.While all 14 fighters were suspended by the Association of Boxing and Combative Sports Commissions (ABC), nine received longer-than-mandatory time off for specific injuries sustained in the bout.On Wednesday, MMA Junkie received the full list of those medical suspensions, from California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) executive director Andy Foster, who served as one of the head regulators of the event.Receiving maximum durations, unsurprisingly, were headliners Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria, who engaged in a gutsy back-and-forth war. Topuria (17-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC), who was significantly swollen as he retired to the stool between Rounds 4 and 5, received a 180-day suspension and will need to seek oral and maxillofacial surgeon clearance. Gaethje (28-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) was given the same duration for injuries to his right wrist and left knee. Also receiving the 180-day suspension was Alex Pereira, who was finished by Ciryl Gane in the co-main event. Pereira (13-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC), too, will need maxillofacial CT scan clearance. His opponent Gane (14-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC), walked away relatively unscathed, needing only eight days off for rest in the commission's eyes.Check out the full list below. It's important to note that fighters can return prior to the conclusion of non-mandatory suspensions should they be cleared by a doctor. The full UFC Freedom 250 medical suspensions include:Justin Gaethje: Suspended 180 days or right wrist and left knee MRIs cleared; also suspended 45 days mandatory rest.Ilia Topuria: Suspended 180 days or until cleared by oral and maxillofacial surgeon; also suspended 60 days for TKO.Ciryl Gane: Suspended eight days mandatory rest.Alex Pereira: Suspended 180 days or until maxillofacial CT scan cleared as negative; also suspended 45 days for TKO.Sean O'Malley: Suspended eight days mandatory rest.Aiemann Zahabi: Suspended 180 days or until maxillofacial CT scan cleared as negative; also suspended 45 days for TKO.Josh Hokit: Suspended eight days mandatory rest.Derrick Lewis: Suspended 45 days mandatory rest for TKO.Mauricio Ruffy: Suspended four days mandatory rest.Michael Chandler: Suspended 45 days mandatory rest for TKO.Bo Nickal: Suspended four days mandatory rest.Kyle Daukaus: Suspended 45 days mandatory rest for TKO.Diego Lopes: Suspended 30 days or until left eye cleared by physician.Steve Garcia: Suspended 180 days or until left hand X-ray cleared; also suspended 60 days mandatory rest for knockout loss. This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Ilia Topuria, Alex Pereira suspended for UFC Freedom 250 facial injuries

Anti-LGBTQ+ Christian nationalist finishes dead last in 3-way GOP state senate primary
Rabidly anti-LGBTQ+ Christian nationalist Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers (R) lost his re-election bid yesterday as he came in dead last in a three-way Republican primary for his state Senate seat. Deevers received only 29.93% of all votes, placing third behind his opponents, Curtis Erwin (who won 33.12%) and Jean Hausheer (who won 36.95%). In a video posted on Wednesday evening, Deevers blamed “wealthy outside groups” for spending “massive sums” to defeat him and other candidates. He also said he’s deeply grateful to his wife and six children, his church, and his local and national supporters. Related Conservatives freak out over cheerful message from gay/straight alliance teens Last year, Deevers said that Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, is not settled law because “there is just no right to gay marriage in the Constitution” and because marriage is “God’s institution.” Deevers’s campaign website also clearly states his anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs. It is outrageous that Critical Race Theory and Queer Theory dominate in many of our public institutions. I promise to support legislation to put a stop to all of this.” Friends, after Tuesday’s primary I wanted to say thank you and share what’s on my mind. Here’s a short message from me: pic.twitter.com/7873lCzWiY— Dusty Deevers (@DustyDeevers) June 17, 2026 The extremist watchdog group, Right Wing Watch, noted that, upon taking office in 2023, “Deevers provided a case study in what happens when Christian nationalists get in power as he sought to abolish abortion, ban no-fault divorce, outlaw pornography, and literally take the nation back to the 1600s. Time and again, Deevers declared that the fundamental purpose of government is to convert people to faith in Jesus Christ.” Indeed, Deevers introduced legislation in 2024 that would have massively fined and imprisoned consenting adults for sending sexual images or text messages to one another. The broadly and vaguely written bill would’ve allowed persecution of people acting in live theater performances, strip clubs, and possibly even burlesque and drag performances. Christian nationalist Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers loved to thank "Right Wing Boost" every time we highlighted his extremism, but it seems that the voters in his district were not impressed, as they just voted him out of office. https://t.co/JTfHVsvUcV pic.twitter.com/F6l5iFfY9O— Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) June 17, 2026 It’s unclear whether either of his opponents will be any less anti-LGBTQ+. Hausheer’s campaign website states, “I stand on two unshakable foundations: the Holy Bible and the U.S. Constitution. If your law breaks either, I’m not voting for it…and if your feelings are hurt by that, I suggest you read both.” Erwin’s website promises to protect “family values” (a common anti-LGBTQ+ dog whistle) and to defend religious liberty. Hausheer and Erwin will face each other in a Republican primary run-off election scheduled for August 25. 'If we lose, we lose in our way' - what Tuchel said at half-time
England players were on the receiving end of a half-time reproach from manager Thomas Tuchel as their World Cup campaign got off to a victorious start against Croatia.Harry Kane's double and a goal apiece from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford ensured England secured a 4-2 win in Dallas. But having taken the lead twice in the first half, the score was 2-2 at half-time and captain Kane said Tuchel delivered an important half-time message to the team."I thought it was a game of two halves. In the first half, we were OK," Kane told ITV. "[We were] really disappointed to concede in the way we did. I thought we dropped off."Credit to the manager, he gave us a speech at half-time and said if we lose, we lose in our way, and I think we saw that in the way we came out in the second half."We went full gas and they couldn't live with it. Credit to everyone for the first game of the tournament."England score four against Croatia in World Cup openerWho was the biggest attacking threat? England player ratingsIn a separate interview with BBC Sport, the Bayern Munich striker added: "The boss said at half-time to up the tempo, go man for man and completely take the game to them, and that is exactly what happened."You saw us at our best level, both with and without the ball and we could have scored three or four goals in that 20-minute spell in the second half."We did what we needed to do and finished the game off nicely at the end."Asked what he said to his team at half-time, Tuchel told ITV: "Even if we lose, it will not change my perception of the last 17 days, but let's do it our way."We were too focused on protecting the result. We were a back seven and we didn't defend. If the result doesn't go our way, we want to play our way."I tried to encourage them to go for it."The half-time team talk seemed to have an almost immediate impact as Bellingham scored within two minutes of the restart to put England 3-2 ahead. The Real Madrid midfielder told ITV: "It wasn't one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting; it was what the team needed."We have a mature group with great leaders in there. Everyone knew the level we had to get to. The start of the second half gave us a great platform."Play BBC Sport's new World Cup predictor gameWorld Cup fixtures and group standingsHow to watch the World Cup on the BBCEverything you need to know about the World Cup

He put together two very solid seasons for the Bonnies and led the team in assists in 2025-26. The NCAA granted him a fifth season of eligibility after his 2024-25 season was limited to just 10 games due to injury. With longtime Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt retiring, Bowen has decided to join Penn State for his final season of eligibility. Bowen shot just 41% from the floor last season , though his assist rate was 10th in the Atlantic 10. This looks like a decent pickup for Penn State, but we will see if he readjusts to the level of competition in the Big Ten after making just nine starts in his two seasons at Iowa. He is not the first St. Bonaventure player to transfer to Penn State. Izaiah Brockington joined the Nittany Lions from the Bonnies in 2018.Welcome, Dasonte!

Brendan Sorsby reportedly plans July workout for NFL teams before supplemental draft
Brendan Sorsby is tentatively planning to work out for NFL teams before the supplemental draft following the quarterback’s decision to end an unprecedented legal fight to retain his eligibility after he acknowledged making impermissible bets while playing college football.Sorsby plans to hold his pro day July 10 at a Dallas-area high school, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because the process for conducting the supplemental draft wasn’t complete. The deadline for applying for the draft is Monday, but there were still procedural issues related to a Texas district court’s temporary injunction that had cleared the way for him to play for Texas Tech this fall.Sorsby, who is from the Dallas area, would have to be ineligible from NCAA play to be able to apply for the NFL’s supplemental draft. That rarely used draft would be completed at least a week before the start of the first training camp in late July. The temporary injunction issued June 8 by a Lubbock County court prevented the NCAA from blocking the quarterback’s eligibility for what would have been his final college season. That would have to be dropped to make him ineligible again. The NCAA had declared the 22-year-old Sorsby permanently ineligible after he admitted making thousands of bets worth at least $90,000 during his time at three different schools. His college career began at Indiana, before playing for Cincinnati the past two seasons and then transferring to reigning Big 12 Conference champion Texas Tech in January. Those bets included at least 40 bets on Indiana while he was a freshman there in 2022, though none on the game in which he played for the Hoosiers that season. The June 22 deadline for entering the supplemental draft was among the key factors that led to the decision Monday for Sorsby to pursue the pros rather than move forward with the legal process that had gotten more uncertain.Sorsby filed suit against the NCAA on May 18. The case was heard June 1 in the 99th District Court in Lubbock County, where Texas Tech is located, and he was granted the temporary injunction against the NCAA on June 8. The NCAA and the Big 12 went to different courts this week. The NCAA on Monday asked a Texas appellate court for an emergency motion to stay the injunction, and for a resolution of the case before the start of Texas Tech’s season. The Big 12 went to federal court seeking an order to back its ability to use its bylaws for possible sanctions against Texas Tech if Sorsby had played this season.Sorsby, who never took a snap for Texas Tech, played in 35 college games, 24 at Cincinnati the past two seasons after 11 at Indiana the two seasons before that. He threw for 7,208 yards with 60 touchdowns and 18 interceptions while completing 594 of 968 passes (61.4%). He ran 320 times for 1,295 yards and 22 more scores. At Cincinnati last season, he threw for 2,800 yards and 27 TDs while running for 580 yards and nine touchdowns. He ranked third in the Big 12 with 281.7 total yards per game.

World Cup: Former Bundesliga star ties Messi’s assist record
World Cup: Former Bundesliga star ties Messi’s assist recordIvan Perišić became only the second player in the history of the World Cup to assist goals in four editions (since records began in 1966). The PSV winger provided the assist for ex-Union Berlin striker Petar Musa before England produced a dominant second-half performance against Croatia to win 4-2.The 37-year-old started his streak on his debut tournament in 2014. He scored and assisted in Croatia’s 4-0 win over Cameroon in a game most known for Alex Song’s red card for a violent act. He was a Wolfsburg player at the time, where he won the DFB-Pokal in 2015.Perišić repeated that feat four years later in a 2-1 win over England in the semi-final. After Kieran Trippier’s memorable free-kick, the then-Inter player was directly involved in both goals to send the minnows to a first-ever final. Despite his goal against France, Croatia had to settle for a second-place finish. They also reached the semi-final in 2022 as Perišić’s first two assists of the tournament came in the group stage against Canada. He also provided the cross for Josko Gvardiol’s goal in the third-placed playoff victory against Morocco.Lionel Messi is the only other player to assist in four World Cup editions on record. The Argentine tied Miroslav Klose for goals after his first-ever hat-trick in the competition against Algeria. The soon-to-be 39-year-old will hope to stretch his record to five tournaments in the upcoming games. In addition to Wolfsburg, Perišić played for Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern. He won the Meisterschale with both clubs as he was part of Hansi Flick’s treble-winning team in 2019/20. He is the second-most-capped player for Croatia, with 155 appearances.
