Folarin Balogun's unlikely path to the USMNT reaches the World Cup — with more to come
IRVINE, Calif. — First things first: Folarin Balogun did not end up watching Netflix after his two-goal World Cup debut, after all."I couldn't find anything good to watch," he said in a Yahoo Sports interview Monday. So no Netflix, as he had suggested he would do upon returning to the USMNT's oceanside resort following the 4-1 romp over Paraguay on Friday at SoFi Stadium. And no collective reveling, either."We're still in camp and we're still focusing on the next game," he said. "We're in an intense tournament, so when we're finished, that's when the celebrations will come out."The 24-year-old striker did, however, allow himself to appreciate the historic accomplishment of becoming the first U.S. multi-goal scorer at a World Cup since Bert Patenaude's hat trick against those Paraguayans in 1930."Definitely, I'm giving myself time to step away and just process what a special night it was for the team and myself also," he said. "It's what you dream of as a little kid."World Cup hub | Viewer's guide | Power rankings | Predictions | Players to watchSince joining the national team three years ago, Balogun has injected a world-class striker's menace into the U.S. attack — something that was lacking at the 2022 World Cup."The kid's insane," teammate Christian Pulisic said. "He's lethal right now in front of goal. We're really lucky to have him. We're just hoping it keeps coming like this."Balogun increased his international goal total to 11 in 28 appearances. He also continued a searing run of form that took hold in Monaco's Ligue 1 and Champions League campaigns. For club and country, he has posted 14 goals in 19 appearances since mid-February.U.S. forward Haji Wright called Balogun a "very disciplined pro. He takes his work very seriously. … It's obvious to see why what happened the other day happened."Balogun and the U.S. will aim to sustain their attacking rhythm this Friday in Seattle against Australia, which also won its opener by surprising Turkey, 2-0."You can't fluke your way to these sorts of performances," Balogun said. "It comes from intense work over a long period of time, and then when you get to a stage like this, it's just about playing free, [applying] everything you've been learning."Balogun credited Coach Mauricio Pochettino for instilling proper ideas and tactics over the past year."The coach has given us the foundation to be able to be so intense and have such a dominating structure — the combinations he tells us to play with and the freedom he gives us," Balogun said.Balogun deserves much of the credit though his movement off the ball, strength under pressure and, of course, his finishing touch.Friday's first goal was a one-touch strike in the box set up by Pulisic. On the second, he received Malik Tillman's gorgeous through ball and used his speed, strength and picture-perfect shooting accuracy to extend the lead to 3-0 just before halftime.Throughout the half, he was instrumental in putting Paraguay under pressure in its own end."I think we saw a different side of 'Flo' — the guy who can do the dirty work, the guy who can get stuck in and put his body on the line for the team and be a clinical finisher," midfielder Weston McKennie said. Balogun's story — well, at least, the very short prologue — began in Brooklyn. Visiting from England, Florence Balogun progressed too far along in her pregnancy to fly back to London. So she gave birth to Folarin in New York and, through the 14th Amendment, he received birthright citizenship. They stayed with family for about two months before returning home.So that's how Balogun — bred in London to Nigerian immigrants — is qualified to represent the U.S. on the field. As for the qualities that earned him a place on the pitch, those developed at the Arsenal youth academy alongside current English star Bukayo Saka, another son of Nigerian immigrants. Balogun and Saka would go on to play together twice for Arsenal's first team in the 2021-22 League Cup.With Balogun's career blossoming — he flourished on loan at Reims in France before making a permanent move to Monaco almost three years ago — the English national program took notice. In 2018, he was named to the squad for the Under-17 Euros. His U.S. ties, though, had become known to the U.S. Soccer Federation."In the football world, people just speak," he said, "and I must have just come to light through conversations about my U.S. citizenship."So later in 2018, Balogun accepted an invitation to a U.S. U-18 camp for an unofficial tournament in the Czech Republic. "I had heard a little bit about him," said Marcelo Palomino, a midfielder currently with second-division Orange County SC, whose Irvine stadium is the centerpiece of the U.S. base camp this month."I was intrigued and curious, and then seeing he was in Arsenal's academy at the time made it even more intriguing. We all wanted to see what his level was like. Let's just say he didn't disappoint."Though he didn't have strong U.S. ties, Balogun said he "wanted to experience [the youth camp]. I'm somebody who's always open-minded. I want to give myself the opportunity to experience things and then I can make a decision from there. That situation was no different. It planted a seed in my head."The seed did not germinate right away, though. He remained with England for the U-20 and U-21 cycles, the final steps to the famed Three Lions squad. His mother, however, was high on the U.S."For me to have gone to America and for me to have had him there, it is just something that has really stuck with me," she told ESPN in 2023. "Even when he wasn't even thinking of making an international decision, I'd already made up my mind that he is going to play for America."The turning point came in 2023. In Orlando while the U.S. senior squad was in camp there, he met with U.S. officials and players."They made me feel welcome," he said. The fans also played a part, through messages to his social media accounts."The fans gave me so much motivation," he said. "They showed me so much support."Because Balogun had appeared in official youth competition for England, he needed to apply to FIFA for a one-time switch. Almost five years after his lone appearance at a U.S. camp, he was on course to change the national team's attacking fortunes. In ensuing camps, Balogun has built strong bonds with the established players, including McKennie."I'm still reserved and Weston's still bothering me," he said with a grin. "We sat next to each other on the plane [last month]. I'm trying to have a nap and he's flicking my ear."Balogun brushes off criticism of representing a country he has never lived in."It doesn't cross my radar," he said. "There's going to be critics."Of Colombian heritage, Palomino said "that's what's so cool about the U.S., in that you have people from all different kinds of backgrounds representing the country."It doesn't get much more American than becoming a New York Yankees fan, as Balogun has done. (His favorite player was Babe Ruth.) He also got caught up in the Knicks' NBA championship run, thanks in part to midfielder Tyler Adams, a super fan."I'm getting into all these things as I'm getting older," he said.Balogun also embraces the opportunity of growing the sport in the U.S.What's more American than that?"The best thing we can do is inspire the nation," he said. "Make a stand, make a statement. I want young kids to grow up and to be inspired by what we're doing here now. I want our journey to inspire millions of kids around America. My primary focus is on what we're doing here and to make sure we have a successful tournament."He's off to a great start.

How Jude Bellingham won over Thomas Tuchel to become England’s World Cup No 10
As Jude Bellingham walked off the pitch, a familiar tune rang out from the public address system inside the giant Dallas Stadium. Jubilant England fans sang along to “Hey Jude” as Bellingham walked towards the tunnel, waving to the crowd, embracing his teammates, taking the adulation in his stride. This was ostensibly Harry Kane’s night, scoring two goals which took him level with Gary Lineker’s tally of 10 at World Cups. But perhaps the evening meant more to Bellingham, a player who has been publicly questioned and privately doubted by his own manager, who has been subjected to scrutiny unlike his teammates. “Don’t bring Jude,” ran a headline in the Daily Mail earlier this season, suggesting England would be better off without him at the World Cup.“It’s good to put some of the noise aside and just show my country and my teammates how committed I am to helping us win football matches,” said Bellingham, after scoring England’s third goal in a 4-2 win.Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham embrace at full-time (Getty)One of the decisions Thomas Tuchel stewed over before this opening game – and throughout his 18-month reign – was whether Bellingham or Morgan Rogers should be his No 10. Bellingham missed last September’s qualifiers after undergoing shoulder surgery and it was unfortunately timed. That was the camp when England played their best game under Tuchel, winning 5-0 in Serbia, in which Rogers was excellent. Tuchel omitted Bellingham from the following camp despite his return to fitness at Real Madrid. There was also the infamous line about Bellingham’s “repulsive” on-field behaviour, which Tuchel attributed to his mother and a slip of the tongue in his second language, and for which he later apologised. Tuchel felt England created a “brotherhood” during their September and October camps, after a moment in Serbia when a group of England players conducted their own meticulous warm-down despite not playing in the game. Could a powerful personality like Bellingham slip seamlessly into the fold? Even when he made the World Cup squad, there was no guarantee Bellingham would start against Croatia. Tuchel was asked before kick-off, why Bellingham over Rogers? “It was really close,” the manager said. “In the end we stuck with the team that played and started so well against Costa Rica.” It was hardly a ringing endorsement of Bellingham’s qualities. Was he picked because of his big-game appetite, that knack for scoring when it matters? Of Bellingham’s six previous England goals, two opened the scoring and three were late equalisers, including the overhead kick against Slovakia at Euro 2024. No, said Tuchel. “A 50-50 call,” he called it, as if Bellingham had just beaten Rogers in a game of rock-paper-scissors in the dressing room.Bellingham applauds England fans after full-time (PA)There are a raft of other No 10s Tuchel could have chosen. Eberechi Eze didn’t get a kick here. Phil Foden and Cole Palmer watched the game on TV. But really, what is the point of Bellingham’s unique talents if you don’t use them? England have a player who Real Madrid bought for €103m aged 19, who won the Champions League at 20, who is at his fourth major tournament at 22. Steven Gerrard played his fourth aged 30. Frank Lampard was 36.Bellingham showed why he is an essential piece of England’s World Cup puzzle. There are the intangibles, like his sheer presence in an England team and what that brings. He already carries an aura that transmits confidence to his teammates, that makes opponents feel a little smaller as they line up in the tunnel. And any doubts sown when he lost the ball in the lead-up to Croatia’s first goal were forgotten in an outstanding second half. English football’s great malady has been an inability to keep the ball against capable opponents in tournament conditions, in summer heat when the pressure ratchets up. It is something Gareth Southgate began to remedy in the latter phase of his tenure, but this 45 minutes was better still.Bellingham was central to that control, receiving passes in deep positions and popping the ball off to a teammate, or shielding it from opponents, spinning into space and driving forwards with the ball at his feet. In that 20-minute blitz by England after half-time, Bellingham was physically and technically superior to everyone else in midfield. Then there were his tackles, three of them, more than any other player on the pitch. These were not just toes on the ball but full slides through his opponent, comprehensive clean-outs, taking the man with him as he went. They brought low-octave hums of “Juuuuuude” from the crowd and enthusiastic applause from his manager.Bellingham fires home England’s third goal of the game (Reuters)Jude Bellingham celebrates after scoring England's third goal (Reuters)And then came Bellingham’s goal, the culmination of a 23-pass move. Bellingham fixed his eyes on the goalkeeper and drove into the box, ignoring his teammates, holding off his marker and sliding a finish against the far post and into Dominik Livakovic’s net.It was a performance that encapsulated the best of Bellingham, a player whose greatest gift is to keep the ball from opponents using his body, his brain and his quick feet, whether that’s receiving a pass from one of England’s centre-backs under pressure, or powering into the opposite box with defenders bouncing off his frame.Perhaps a career path outside the Premier League’s gaze has stymied his appreciation in England. Above all, it is Bellingham’s abilities off the ball that go unnoticed, his positional sense, the way he hunts down opponents. No England player has won more duels since his international debut. No England player has won back possession more often in the final third. And perhaps it doesn’t help Bellingham that he is so hard to define, a No 10 who isn’t really a typical No 10 at all. He is a player who tackles, passes, dribbles and scores, who is strong and quick with his feet. His youth coach at Birmingham City famously marvelled at how he could play three midfield roles at once – numbers 4, 8, and 10 – so added them together and assigned him No 22.Bellingham is greeted by Thomas Tuchel after being replaced late in the game (PA)Tuchel said leaving out Rogers was a tough decision after his contributions in qualifying. But, he explained, “you can rely on Jude in these moments. He loves these pressure games, that brings out the best in him. So that’s an easy decision to let him play and to trust him. Also because of the last 16-17 days, how he bought into the idea of team spirit, into the idea of brotherhood.”It was telling that, when Declan Rice left the field with a minor injury in the second half, Bellingham dropped deeper beside Anderson. The relationship has at times been uneasy, but Tuchel showed his trust in Bellingham at a time when England were leading 3-2 and needed midfield stability.Did Bellingham feel he had something to prove? “A little bit, yeah,” he smiled. “I think I’ve got a bit of a chip on my shoulder, haven’t I? And you play best when you’re like that. I think that helps me a lot to find that focus early in the game and to find that intensity. “I know it’s part of being a footballer. I don’t hold a grudge against anyone who says bad things about me because sometimes I do deserve it. Today, I think it was nice to try and show people and remind them what I’m about.”

😱 CR7: horror numbers, is he still an asset for Portugal? 🇵🇹
😱 CR7: horror numbers, is he still an asset for Portugal? 🇵🇹Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t obliged to answer Messi, or at least he didn’t have to do it with a hat-trick: pulling it off would have been even more epochal than what we saw in Argentina-Algeria. But from his pride, hidden yet never completely so, we were all expecting something more. And surely CR7 himself had imagined this Portugal-DR Congo match differently: like those skiers who mime the entire giant slalom course with headphones on, only to crash at the first gate. Cristiano Ronaldo fell, and he made noise doing it.One of Portugal’s worst performancesThe numbers from his match show just how little he contributed to the game:25 touches in 100 minutes5 touches in the opposition box3 shots off target2 big chances missed0 one-on-ones attempted0 fouls wonCR7 did not play alone, and Portugal did not either: the Democratic Republic of the Congo defended in an organised way, made the most of their attackers’ qualities, and punished a light, very light defence without Rúben Dias and Inácio (both on the bench).Martínez’s team managed only 7 shots, with just 1 on target: it is Portugal’s worst result in that regard at a World Cup from 1966 to today.Should we still expect something from CR7?Waiting for Cristiano Ronaldo’s next exploit to decide a match at the highest level feels like a mirage, almost a utopia. Because the moments he has etched into our memory belong to a realm of absolute dominance, but recent history tells a different story. In fact, CR7 has now gone 10 matches without scoring in a major international tournament (European Championship or World Cup): 33 shots, 11 on target, and 0 goals. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he scored just once against Ghana, from the penalty spot, while Portugal’s real standout in that tournament was someone else: Gonçalo Ramos, now confined to the bench.Portugal’s great performances in the Nations League and in the first part of the World Cup qualifiers should not be forgotten, but the question is now becoming a fair one: at the highest level, is CR7 a burden or an advantage? The answers, and their impact, will not take long to arrive: we will find out in the coming matches, Cristiano Ronaldo’s last at international level. And that may not necessarily be a bad thing. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇮🇹 here.

Under the radar: These less-than-stars have made an impact at the World Cup
TORONTO (AP) — They’re the un-Messis, the not-Mbappés. They’re not even Haalands or Kanes. While the biggest names in soccer are getting the most attention at the World Cup, the expanded tournament also has provided some unheralded players with moments to shine. Here’s a look at some of their exploits through the opening matches that concluded Wednesday.Spoiler alert: Vozinha would have been on this list, but at 13 million Instagram followers and counting, the 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper has become too famous for it.Livano Comenencia, CuraçaoComenencia became the first-ever World Cup goal scorer for the smallest-ever country to qualify for the tournament. Curaçao fans may not remember their team’s 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany. They’re more likely to recall Comenencia’s strike from just inside the box.“The goal was absolutely fantastic for all of us, for the nation as well,” winger Kenji Gorré said. “It’s more history being made. The first goal ever scored on the world stage, it’s just phenomenal, and we’re all grateful that we were here to experience it (with) all the people in the stadium.”Comenencia, a 22-year-old midfielder who plays for Zurich in the Swiss Super League, has only recently reached the senior level. He played for the reserve teams of PSV Eindhoven and Juventus before securing a move to Zurich before the 2025-26 season. Now he has a World Cup goal to his name.Boualem Khoukhi, QatarWhile the 35-year-old center back won’t get credit for the goal, Khoukhi leaped with Swiss midfielder Miro Muheim for a cross and forced Muheim into scoring an own goal that equalized the match in stoppage time.Khoukhi celebrated the goal like it was his own, wheeling away to the corner of the pitch as his teammates mobbed him on the ground. His efforts helped Qatar secure its first-ever World Cup point.Despite playing professionally for more than 15 years, Khoukhi has hardly ever left Qatar. The defender spent the first seven years of his senior career at Al-Arabi and the last nine years at Al-Sadd.Jovo Lukic, Bosnia-HerzegovinaLukic had never scored for Bosnia before its opening draw against tournament co-host Canada. Playing for Universitatea Cluj in Romania, Lukic had made just one appearance for his country before May 29.However, with Edin Dzeko and Haris Tabakovic injured, Lukic was called upon to make his first competitive appearance for Bosnia in Toronto. The striker smashed in a header from close range off a corner kick in the first half and will forever be the answer to the trivia question, “Who scored the first World Cup goal on Canadian soil?”Elijah Just, New ZealandJust was perfectly composed in New Zealand’s opening match. He needed just two shots to score twice against Iran in a 2-2 draw. The winger plays for Scottish club Motherwell and has also played in Denmark and Austria. He became the first New Zealand player to score two goals in a World Cup game.Emam Ashour, EgyptNot a bad way to score your first international goal.Ashour’s outside-the-box blast opened Egypt’s World Cup scoring in a 1-1 draw against European power Belgium. Teammate Mostafa Zico was so excited for Ashour that he knocked the goal scorer over during the celebration.Despite the stars on the pitch in Seattle — including Jérémy Doku, Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah — it was the Al Ahly winger who was named man of the match.Ashour has played just one season in Europe, spending most of his professional career in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. But then, the World Cup has a habit of featuring unlikely stars.___Owen Cameros is a student in the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup

NBA Offseason Trade/Free Agent Rumors 2026: Antetokounmpo saga could drag on past draft, Kevin Love to Lakers
While New York is still celebrating its title — the parade on Thursday in Manhattan is expected to draw more than 1 million people — the NBA offseason is coming fast. And it's coming for the Knicks roster (more on that below). Here is all the latestAntetokounmpo saga drags on past draft?Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam set an artificial deadline of wanting to have the Giannis Antetokounmpo saga wrapped up by the NBA Draft. It makes sense. If the Bucks want picks in this deep draft class as part of any trade, they need it done by next Tuesday.Except, NBA insider Chris Haynes reported on SiriusXM NBA Radio that the Antetokounmpo trade saga — which has dragged on for seemingly years — could continue past the draft and into free agency."From what I'm hearing this could drag on into free agency. This could drag on until July…. Boston seems a little bit from what I'm hearing and gauging, Boston doesn't seem a promising destination…. I do still believe he will be moved this offseason but I'm not as certain as I was before that it'd be done before the draft."As NBC Sports recently reported, there is a growing belief around the league that Boston isn't all in on an Antetokounmpo trade, that it was exploring options but not serious. If the Celtics are out of the mix, that just leaves the Heat, with an offer the Bucks' front office clearly doesn't love (or they would have jumped at it long ago). For a couple of weeks now, all the rumors out of Milwaukee have sounded like a team desperately trying to drum up a bidding war, trying to find other interested teams, to spark a market that is tepid now after being hot at the trade deadline. This sounds like more of the same, and maybe the Bucks just strike a deal with Miami at the deadline and move on.Or maybe this drama will drag on longer — but it's not like the offers are not suddenly going to get better.Kevin Love to the Lakers? As we reported this week, league sources have told NBC Sports there is an increasing sense that LeBron James will re-sign with the Lakers. Money and comfort level on both sides are driving that.If he stays in LA, LeBron may reunite with Kevin Love, reports ESPN's Marc Spears."I'm hearing that [LeBron's] likely coming back [to the Lakers]. ... Kevin Love could likely be joining the Lakers too."@MarcJSpears gives some insight on what could be next for LeBron pic.twitter.com/EV1Qwqiixf— NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) June 17, 2026Trae Young declining optionAs expected, Washington's Trae Young will decline his $48.9 million player option for next season, reports Marc Spears of ESPN.This is the first step to him re-signing with the Wizards on a multi-year deal at a lower number (maybe three years, $120 million, or a little less). Young is not part of the long-term future in Washington — that will be focused around whoever they draft No. 1 next week — but he will be part of the transition.Ballmer doesn’t want to trade Kawhi LeonardWhat an owner wants, an owner gets. And Clippers owner Steve Ballmer doesn't want to trade Kawhi Leonard, reports Anthony Slater of ESPN.League sources said Ballmer has maintained a firm stance against a Leonard trade, preferring to continue building around his star forward. Will the league's eventual punishment of the Clippers for the Aspiration scandal change that? Maybe. Depends on what that punishment is. Just don't expect one of the punishments to be the Clippers being forced to void the remaining year on Leonard's contract (that's not really a punishment for either side, the Clippers would get their books cleared up and Leonard would just sign a massive contract somewhere else).Other trade rumors• Knicks owner James Dolan admitted that, as much as he would like to run it back with his championship roster, that may not be possible because he's not taking the team into the second tax apron. From an interview on WFAN’s The Carton Show (hat tip Hoop Rumors)."If we could bring back the whole team, exactly as it is, why wouldn't you? But I don't know if we're going to be able to. We're willing to stretch, but there's certain things in the NBA that you'd have to be suicidal to do and we're not going to do those. One of them is the second apron. Cannot go into the second apron. … I'll write as big of a check as possible, but I can't write a check that goes into the second apron."The core of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart and Miles Bridges are locked down. However, Mitchell Robinson, Landry Shamet and Jordan Clarkson are all unrestricted free agents, while Jose Alvarado has a $4.5 million player option. It may be tough to bring all of them back (don't be surprised if Shamet is holding the short straw when it's all done).• The Atlanta Hawks have gauged Jonathan Kuminga's value on the trade market, reports Michael Scotto at Hoopshype. Atlanta has until June 29 to decide whether to pick up Kuminga's $24.3 million team option for next season.• If Boston does decide to get serious about an Antetokounmpo trade — again, all the buzz in league circles is they are not serious — then there needs to be a third team to get Brown to a new home. It had previously been reported that the Bucks didn't want Brown — a player at his peak is not a fit for a rebuilding team — but now ESPN's Spears says the feeling is mutual: "I know Jaylen wouldn't want to play for Milwaukee.• Draymond Green has a $27.7 million player option for next season, and if he picks it up, the Warriors are open to trading him, reports Anthony Slater at ESPN. That said, the expectation is he opts out and re-signs for two years at a slightly lower number (two years, $40 million?).

Liberty to host Aces in WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship rematch
The Commissioner’s Cup final is headed back to New York, where the Liberty will face the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday, June 30, for a $500,000 purse. It is a rematch of the 2023 Cup championship, when New York upset Las Vegas in a preview of their eventual WNBA Finals matchup later that season. The Liberty are the hosts this time around, after winning their previous Cup in Las Vegas. They hosted the 2024 championship game — a loss to the Minnesota Lynx — but had to relocate to Long Island because of the NBA Draft. This is the first Cup title game to be contested at Barclays Center.New York clinched its berth in the final two games ago, but the Liberty earned the right to host by eking out a 96-95 win over the Chicago Sky on Wednesday. That gave New York a clean sweep (6-0) of its Eastern Conference games and the tiebreaker over Las Vegas. The Aces were in control of their destiny Wednesday due to their head-to-head win over Minnesota, needing only a win over the Phoenix Mercury to secure their berth. Las Vegas pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 86-76 in its first trip to Phoenix since clinching the 2025 league title on the Mercury’s home floor. Aces star center A’ja Wilson led the way with a game-high 33 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. The Liberty and Aces have not played each other yet this season. Their first regular-season matchup is on Saturday, June 23, in Las Vegas, an appetizer for the main event to follow in New York. But the teams are no strangers to one another; in addition to the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup, the Liberty and the Aces met in the 2023 and 2024 postseasons, splitting the two series as they split the two WNBA titles. The star power is off the charts, as the Liberty’s Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones and the Aces’ Wilson have won six of the last seven MVP awards and five of the last seven Finals MVPs.The Liberty finally have their full roster together, after welcoming back Sabrina Ionescu on Sunday against the Washington Mystics following a three-week absence due to injury. Ionescu had 5 points in her return and doubled that to 10 against the Sky, including the game-winning bucket with 10.3 seconds to play. New York is riding an eight-game winning streak. The Aces have won seven of their last eight games behind the dominance of Wilson, who is the favorite to capture yet another MVP trophy. She leads the league in points and blocks per game. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.New York Liberty, Las Vegas Aces, WNBA2026 The Athletic Media Company

DR Congo star says no ‘special plan’ needed to stop Cristiano Ronaldo
Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty ImagesDR Congo midfielder Ngal Ayel Mukau has admitted there was no special plan to stop Cristiano Ronaldo before Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.Portugal entered the match with Ronaldo once again attracting much of the attention, but DR Congo left with a point after frustrating one of the tournament’s biggest names. It was a blunt assessment, but not a disrespectful one from DR Congo midfielder, who showed his respect to Cristiano Ronaldo – one of the all-time greats.Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty ImagesNgal Ayel Mukau admits DR Congo didn’t use special tactics against Cristiano RonaldoAfter the game, Mukau was asked whether his side had prepared a specific approach to contain the Portugal captain.Rather than claim DR Congo had built their defensive plan around Ronaldo, the midfielder suggested the 41-year-old is no longer the same force he once was.“A special plan to contain Cristiano Ronaldo? To be honest, not really. We know that he isn’t the same as before. He’s a bit older now. But still, he’s one of the greatest… much respect to him.”Mukau recognised Ronaldo’s legendary status while also making it clear DR Congo did not view him as the same unstoppable threat he was during his peak years.Portugal held as Ronaldo faces familiar World Cup scrutinyThe 1-1 draw was a strong result for DR Congo and a frustrating start for Portugal. For Ronaldo, the spotlight is always sharper at a World Cup, especially at this stage of his career. He remains one of the biggest names in the tournament, but Mukau’s comments captured the reality facing Portugal.Opponents still respect Ronaldo. They still understand what he has achieved. But they may no longer feel they need to build an entire defensive plan around stopping him. That was perhaps the most telling part of Mukau’s answer after DR Congo walked away with a valuable point.Read more:How DR Congo fans mocked Cristiano Ronaldo after 1-1 draw vs. Portugal at World CupEx-Premier League striker slams ’embarrassing’ Roberto Martinez ‘scared’ to take Cristiano Ronaldo offWhen was the last time Cristiano Ronaldo scored in a World Cup amid disastrous start vs DR Congo

Lius Diaz dazzles as Colombia beat World Cup 2026 debutants Uzbekistan 3-1
Colombia opened their World Cup Group K campaign with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at the Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, as Daniel Munoz, Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz struck to overcome a spirited second-half response from the tournament debutants.Uzbekistan were disciplined for long periods under their Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro, but Colombia’s greater quality stood out in front of a crowd of over 80,000 on a cool, rain-tinged evening in Mexico City.Colombia, the Copa America runners-up, had early sights of goal through Jhon Arias and James Rodriguez, but Uzbekistan sat deep, scrapped gamely and waited for mistakes. Bekhruz Karimov almost profited when he burst forward, only for Jhon Lucumi to intervene before he could shoot.Diaz had the clearest chance of the opening half when he struck the post, before Abdukodir Khusanov slid in after the winger ‌had knocked the ball past him, taking out both the Colombian player and a pitchside cameraman who required medical treatment.Uzbekistan’s resistance finally cracked in the 40th minute. Diaz gathered the ball after an attack had broken down and clipped a fine pass into the path of Munoz, who guided home a neat finish for his third international goal. The large Colombian contingent erupted, their yellow shirts making the Azteca look and sound almost like home. Chants of “Vamos Colombia”, adapted from a Club America-style chorus, rolled around the ground, while Uzbekistan’s small band of supporters answered with drums of their own.Colombia’s Luis Diaz celebrates scoring their second goal [Eloisa Sanchez/Reuters]Fayzullaev scores Uzbekistan’s maiden World Cup goalUzbekistan improved after the break and equalised on the hour with the country’s first World Cup goal.Dostonbek Khamdamov fed Eldor Shomurodov, whose shot from the right side of the box was saved low by Camilo Vargas. The goalkeeper could not hold it, however, and Abbosbek Fayzullaev nodded in the rebound from close range.Abbosbek Fayzullaev celebrates scoring Uzbekistan’s first World Cup goal [Eloisa Sanchez/Reuters]However, Uzbekistan’s joy lasted only five minutes.Gustavo Puerta released Diaz in the 65th minute, and the forward side-footed across goal to restore Colombia’s lead. The crowd responded with chants of “Lucho, Lucho”.Uzbekistan kept pushing. Akmal Mozgovoy shot narrowly off target in stoppage time, Karimov hit the bar with an effort from distance, and Azizbek Amonov had a shot blocked after Otabek Shukurov’s pass. But Colombia had the final word, Campaz scoring in the ninth minute of stoppage time to settle a contest in which Nestor Lorenzo’s side had 15 attempts to Uzbekistan’s nine, ‌and extended their strong recent group-stage record to seven wins in eight World Cup matches.Colombia face DR Congo on Tuesday in Guadalajara, after Uzbekistan play Portugal on the same day in Houston.Colombia’s Jaminton Campaz celebrates after the match [Eloisa Sanchez/Reuters]The FIFA World Cup begins on June 11. World Cup panic meter: Brazil, Spain and Portugal all dropped points. Who should be most concerned?
All 48 teams have played one game at this World Cup, meaning it’s time to overreact to 90 minutes of soccer!Entering the tournament, six teams formed the top tier of favorites. Three of those teams won as expected in their openers, with the star of each scoring at least two goals in a multiple-goal win against a team considered second- or third-best in the group.France got two goals from Kylian Mbappé in a 3-1 win over Senegal. Lionel Messi’s hat trick powered Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria. Harry Kane scored twice in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia. Business as usual for those teams and their key players. The other three favorites (Brazil, Spain, Portugal) all dropped points in draws, with two of those draws coming against massive underdogs. Before rating each team’s concern level on a scale from 1 to 10 (with 10 meaning it’s time for complete panic), let’s talk through what this panic meter means.World Cup schedule | Group schedule, results | StandingsBecause of the forgiving format with eight of twelve third-place teams advancing, there’s still little chance that any of these favorites get eliminated in the group stage. One win or even two draws in the final two group games will likely get them through, so this exercise is more about trying to extrapolate what we learned from each team’s first 90 minutes into the potential deep tournament run that all these teams expect.BrazilBrazil’s 1-1 opening draw with Morocco was the least surprising of these three opening scores, as Morocco reached the 2022 World Cup semifinals and won Africa Cup of Nations this year, while moving up to seventh in the FIFA rankings, one spot behind Brazil. So the result itself is not concerning at all. Brazil’s remaining group opponents are Haiti and Scotland, who didn’t have a World Cup win between them until Scotland (perhaps undeservedly) beat Haiti on Saturday. However, Brazil rarely looked like Brazil against Morocco. The Atlas Lions dominated the first half hour, outshooting Brazil 12-3 and seizing a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Then Vinícius Júnior’s moment of individual brilliance tied the game and turned the tide. That’s what Brazil can do with its collection of attacking talent. All the pre-tournament questions about Brazil’s semi-existent midfield remain though. Thirty-somethings Casemiro and Fabinho don’t look like the answers, as Morocco frequently charged right through the center of the pitch to create chances. Master tinkerer Carlo Ancelotti may solve this puzzle, though I’m not optimistic.Brazil will be fine in the group stage, but a matchup with Japan or Netherlands is a strong possibility in the Round of 32, and either of those teams could similarly run riot on Brazil’s midfield and send the Seleção home early.Brazil concern level: 5SpainCo-favorite Spain’s 0-0 draw against debutant Cape Verde was the biggest surprise in the first set of group games. On the bright side, Spain dominated the game as expected, holding 74 percent possession and outshooting Cape Verde 27-6. Had even one Spain shot found the back of the net, this conversation wouldn’t be happening. On the not-so-bright side, this draw was reminiscent of how Spain has gone out in the Round of 16 at the last two World Cups. In 2018, Spain had 78 percent possession and outshot Russia 24-8, but was eliminated on penalties. In 2022, Spain had 76 percent possession and only outshot Morocco 13-6 before getting ousted on penalties. One might question Mikel Oyarzabal as Spain’s center forward, but he had five shots in the game and could easily have scored one. He had 15 La Liga goals for Real Sociedad this season, and he’d scored in six straight caps before Monday, so I think he’ll be fine.Plus Spain’s two best wingers, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, combined to play 22 minutes against Cape Verde as they continue recovering from injury. When they’re fit, the attack will be even more dominant, and Spain will still be far better than Saudi Arabia or Uruguay in Group H. I still expect Spain to win the group and go on a deep run in the knockout stage.Spain concern level: 2Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, joined Lionel Messi as the only players to appear in six men’s World Cups, but unlike his longtime rival, he was unable to find the scoresheet in Portugal’s opener.Xinhua News Agency via Getty ImagesPortugalJoão Neves scored in the sixth minute against Congo DR, and Portugal seemed en route to an easy opening win. But Portugal mustered only one additional first-half shot, and Yoane Wissa equalized for Congo DR on the stroke of halftime. Portugal controlled possession in the second half (68 percent) but did little with it, outshooting Congo DR only 5-2 while rarely looking in sync. Let’s talk about the Ronaldo in the room. The 41-year-old played all 90 minutes and appears anchored in Portugal’s starting lineup, but at times he’s more dead weight than inspiration. Portugal has a generational midfield behind him, and they seem focused on getting him the ball in the box rather than making optimal plays for themselves or others. Ronaldo is not the sole attacking issue for the Portuguese. Their wingers have not played up to their talent recently. Pedro Neto, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão and Francisco Conceição combined for a single shot and a single chance created in 180 minutes against Congo DR. They need to step up, and they would also benefit from a less Ronaldo-centric system. Colombia is atop Group K with three points, which means Portugal could face Ghana or Croatia in the Round of 32 as the group runner-up, then potentially get Spain in the Round of 16. Portugal’s ceiling is limited until its Ronaldo dilemma is solved, and that’s a big reason for concern.Portugal concern level: 8

Dodgers Reveal Special Luka Doncic Bobblehead Giveaway In Surprise Announcement
The Los Angeles Dodgers, out of nowhere, unveiled a special giveaway for a random game in August featuring the franchise’s cross-sport sister team, the LA Lakers, and superstar Luka Doncic. The giveaway takes place on August 21st, when the Dodgers host the Pittsburgh Pirates in Los Angeles. This will certainly be the biggest non-Dodgers player-related giveaway of the season, and fans should absolutely get tickets as soon as possible if they want a shot at it.The Dodgers are now owned by the same ownership group that bought the Lakers a few months ago — making the two sports franchises’ connection grow even stronger. Mar 27, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic (77) reacts after scoring during the second half against the Brooklyn Nets at Crypto.com Arena. Mandatory Credit: William Liang-Imagn ImagesThe Lakers and Dodgers have long been linked as the main teams in Los Angeles, and the Dodgers have featured plenty of purple-and-gold players in their giveaways. This one, however, will be the first to feature an active Lakers player in the Lakers’ new ownership era, feeling like the cornerstone moment of unity between the teams. Naturally, for such a massive moment, the player chosen is the biggest thing going in LA basketball — Slovenian guard Luka Doncic. Doncic arrived in Los Angeles a little more than a year ago, but he has since been totally embraced as an Angeleno, with murals and his name ringing loudly as the franchise player. He was an MVP candidate for much of the 2025-2026 season before a devastating hamstring injury took him out of commission for the tail end of the regular season and postseason. However, he will come with a renewed hunger for the 2026-2027 season.Luka Doncic Bobblehead BreakdownView this post on InstagramA post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation)The bobblehead is Lakers-centric, with Doncic in his full Lakers uniform, and the details make it clear that it is him. He has his signature armband and knee sleeve, along with a bright Hollywood smile. His name is plastered on the front, with the only Dodgers part of the collectible being the team’s name written on the inside. For any Lakers fan, big or small, this is a must-acquire and the perfect precursor to such a consequential Lakers season that will kick off a month and change from the giveaway.

FIFA World Cup hydration breaks impacting results in pattern too clear to ignore
Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty ImagesFIFA introduced mandatory hydration breaks at the 2026 World Cup to protect player welfare, but early evidence suggests they are having a bigger impact than anyone expected.Referees now pause play around the 22nd minute of each half for a three-minute break, regardless of weather, venue or whether a stadium is air conditioned. FIFA says it is about ensuring consistency across a summer tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The welfare argument is clear, especially in venues where temperatures can rise past 90 degrees. But there is growing concern that these breaks are changing the flow of games in ways that are hard to ignore.Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt – AMA/Getty ImagesFIFA hydration breaks are creating World Cup momentum swingsIn eight of the first 16 matches, teams scored within 10 minutes of a hydration break, turning what was meant to be a safety measure into one of the tournament’s biggest talking points.Curaçao felt that shift against Germany. Livano Comenencia had just equalized in Houston, giving the tournament’s smallest nation a real chance at an upset. Then came the break.Curaçao lost its edge, Germany regrouped and scored twice before halftime on the way to a 7-1 win.Alan Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast: “I actually felt sorry for them.” He added that the stoppage “killed their momentum” after Curaçao had just scored.Morocco had a similar experience against Brazil in New Jersey. They scored before the first break, but Vinicius Junior equalized less than 10 minutes after play resumed.Players coaches and fans question FIFA hydration break impactRoy Keane compared the stoppages to an American-style timeout, saying on The Overlap that soccer is loved for its pace and that the breaks disrupt the natural flow of the game.Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman admitted coaches can use the pause to tell players what to improve, which is exactly why critics say the rule is now tactical as much as medical.Virgil van Dijk also questioned the TV effect, saying mid-game commercials are not great for neutral viewers. In the United States, Fox has used the breaks for adverts, while Telemundo has not done the same.Fans have noticed too. There were boos for the first hydration break during Iraq vs Norway in Foxborough, a sign that the stadium experience is being interrupted as well. The debate is not about whether players need protection in extreme heat. They do. The question is whether a mandatory break in every match is reshaping the World Cup too much, and the early signs suggest it already is.Read more:DR Congo star says no ‘special plan’ needed to stop Cristiano RonaldoWhat IShowSpeed did for an Argentina fan at Portugal vs. DR Congo is going viralHow DR Congo fans mocked Cristiano Ronaldo after 1-1 draw vs. Portugal at World Cup

Photo by Alex Pantling - FIFA/FIFA via Getty ImagesLionel Messi has only played twice at Arrowhead Stadium, but his record there is already better than many NFL stars who have spent years trying to win in Kansas City. The Argentina captain helped his side open the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Algeria at Arrowhead, continuing a perfect record at one of the most intimidating venues in American sports. While the result was another positive step in Argentina’s title defence, it also produced a statistic that NFL fans may find particularly amusing.Photo by Maja Hitij – FIFA/FIFA via Getty ImagesMessi’s success at Arrowhead started before the World CupMessi’s latest victory in Kansas City was not his first taste of success at Arrowhead Stadium. More than two years before leading Argentina to victory over Algeria, he had already won there while representing Inter Miami.Back in April 2024, Sporting Kansas City moved an MLS fixture against Inter Miami to Arrowhead in anticipation of huge demand to see Messi in action. The Argentine delivered, scoring in a 3-2 victory as Miami left Kansas City with all three points. He returned to the same venue for Argentina’s World Cup opener and once again finished on the winning side. That means Messi now owns a perfect 2-0 record at Arrowhead Stadium despite making just two appearances there. One NFL quarterback knows how difficult that achievement really isArrowhead has long been regarded as one of the toughest road venues in professional sports, with the Kansas City Chiefs turning it into a fortress for much of the last decade.Few visiting players understand that reality better than Derek Carr. During his time with the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders, Carr made repeated trips to Kansas City as part of one of the NFL’s fiercest divisional rivalries, but victories were hard to come by.The veteran quarterback owns a 1-9 record at Arrowhead Stadium, highlighting just how difficult it can be for opposing teams to leave with a win. That is what makes Messi’s record so remarkable. After just two visits to Arrowhead, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner already has twice as many victories at the stadium as Carr managed throughout a decade of NFL appearances there. For most athletes, winning in Kansas City becomes a career-long challenge. For Messi, it has happened every time he has stepped onto the field.Read more:Lionel Messi VAR controversy sparks South Africa head coach criticism amid Themba Zwane’s banDavid Beckham sends ‘GOAT’ message to Lionel Messi after World Cup hat-trickEvery World Cup hat trick this century as Lionel Messi joins elite list

England banish embarrassing 24-year World Cup curse with statement win vs Croatia
Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer - GES Sportfoto/Getty ImagesEngland made a statement to the other 47 nations at the 2026 World Cup with their 4-2 victory over Croatia. The Three Lions are among the favourites to win the tournament, but, as always, many have doubts about their credentials. However, England supporters will be delighted with their performance against a solid Croatia team on Wednesday night.Thomas Tuchel’s side were not perfect by any means, but they proved to the world that they must be taken seriously.England also broke a 32-year curse, which suggests they are already a better team than in previous tournaments. Why England’s win over Croatia was historically significantEngland have typically struggled against strong opposition at the World Cup this century. From Portugal in 2006 to France in 2022, they had not beaten a team in the top 15 in the world rankings since Argentina in 2002.England beat Argentina 1-0 in the group stage, thanks to a David Beckham penalty, before losing to eventual winners Brazil. However, things have changed in 2026, as the Three Lions beat the 13th-ranked team in the world (Croatia) at the Dallas Stadium.England’s 4-2 victory ended a nine-game winless run (two draws and seven losses) against top-15 opponents at the World Cup.Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer – GES Sportfoto/Getty ImagesSome will argue Croatia are an ageing team on the decline, but few expected England to score four goals against them.It was undoubtedly a statement win, which also makes them huge favourites to advance to the knockout rounds as Group L winners. The Three Lions will be expected to beat both Ghana and Panama before entering the round of 32 with momentum on their side.Tuchel will not let his players get carried away, but perhaps it is time for England supporters to start dreaming big again.Read more:Soccer fan reveals how he managed to secure World Cup final ticket for just $60Stephen A. Rohit Sharma joins Sachin, Kohli, Ganguly and Dravid in elite list, becomes only fifth Indian batter in history to ...
Rohit Sharma became only the fifth Indian batter to complete 14,000 runs in List A cricket during India's second ODI against Afghanistan on Wednesday. The former India captain reached the milestone during a quick 48 off 39 balls. His innings included six fours and two sixes and came at a strike rate of over 123 before he was dismissed by Rashid Khan. With that knock, Rohit took his List A tally to 14,038 runs from 356 matches. He has also scored 37 centuries in the format, which includes one-day matches played at international, domestic and state levels.Among Indian batters, only four players have scored more List A runs than Rohit. Sachin Tendulkar leads the list with 21,999 runs in 551 matches and 60 centuries. He is followed by Virat Kohli (16,447 runs), Sourav Ganguly (15,622 runs) and Rahul Dravid (15,271 runs).Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first in the second ODI.India's innings was led by captain Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, who shared a 224-run partnership for the third wicket and helped the hosts post 402 all out.As part of India's preparations for next year's World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, while Gill moved down to No. 3. However, Jaiswal was dismissed for 4 in the second over.Rohit looked comfortable during his stay at the crease and appeared set for a bigger score before Rashid Khan's googly found an inside edge and hit the stumps.Gill then took charge of the innings and went on to score 154. The hundred was his ninth in ODIs and his first since becoming India's full-time ODI captain.Kishan provided strong support and made 125, registering his second ODI century and his first since his double hundred against Bangladesh in December 2022.The pair's 224-run stand laid the foundation for India's total of 402, putting the hosts in a strong position.India won the match by 170 runs in the second ODI in Lucknow on Wednesday and sealed the three-match series 2-0.

Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies could play for Canada vs. Qatar
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA - JUNE 17: Alphonso Davies #19 of Canada during a training session one day ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B match between Canada and Qatar at National Soccer Development Centre on June 17, 2026 in Vancouver, British Columbia. (Photo by Elizabeth Ruiz Ruiz/Getty Images) | Getty Images On its home soil, Canada got off to a rough start at the World Cup, as it could only eek out a 1-1 draw vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina.Desperate times might be calling for desperate measures as the Canadians could roll out Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies to play against Qatar at 3:00PM EDT in Vancouver, British Columbia. Canadian journalist Ben Steiner captured Canada head coach Jesse Marsch offered up this response when asked about this up on the status of Davies: “Alphonso is looking really good, so it’s just a matter of, ‘okay, what kind of game is it? What kind of moment is it? And how do we feel he can contribute?’”Is this Marsch giving a spoiler on what lies ahead or throwing Qatar a red herring to affect its planning? It is tough to say, but it would be hard to believe that Davies will kept out of this World Cup much longer.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts

🎥 Colombia dominate Uzbekistan, Luis Diaz is 🪄! Ghana beat Panama late!
🎥 Colombia dominate Uzbekistan, Luis Diaz is 🪄! Ghana beat Panama late!Colombia made no mistake in their opener and, led by their star Luis Diaz, who had a goal and an assist, beat Uzbekistan at Mexico City Stadium. With this win, the South Americans moved to the top of Group K, helped by Portugal’s draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Want to stay up to date on everything happening in the USA, Mexico and Canada? Don’t forget to bookmark the World Cup! To follow the competition, search for “World Cup” on OneFootball and click the star next to it so you don’t miss a single piece of news! For Uzbekistan, regardless of the defeat, it was a historic moment. Fabio Cannavaro’s national team was in fact making its World Cup debut. Los Cafeteros came flying out of the blocks and came close to scoring several times in the opening half hour. It was only a matter of time before Lorenzo’s side broke the deadlock and, right on the stroke of half-time, Luis Diaz stepped up with a pinpoint assist for Muñoz to make it 1-0.Uzbekistan, however, refused to give in and found an immediate equaliser at the start of the second half through Fayzullaev. The Asians’ joy was short-lived, with Colombia responding straight away to retake the lead just five minutes later. After setting up the first goal, Diaz did it himself this time and beat Yusupov with a low shot. In stoppage time, the South Americans put the game to bed for good with Campaz heading home for 3-1. Ghana-Panama 1-0Ghana got off to a strong start and beat Panama 1-0 at the end of a balanced, hard-fought match decided only in stoppage time. In Toronto, the Black Stars found the winner in the 95th minute thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi, who finished off an assist from Brandon Thomas-Asante and finally broke the Central American side’s resistance. For large stretches of the match, Panama looked the better side in terms of play. Thomas Christiansen’s team managed possession better and created the more dangerous chances, but could not find the decisive breakthrough. Ghana struggled, stayed compact and gradually grew into the game as the minutes passed. The match opened up in the second half, but the score still seemed destined to remain goalless. Just when 0-0 looked inevitable, the moment that changed everything arrived: in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Brandon Thomas-Asante found space on the right and delivered a perfect ball for Yirenkyi, who made no mistake from close range and scored the winner. Ghana are now second in Group L, level on points with England. There was no shortage of good-luck rituals in the stands at Toronto Stadium either. A video of a Ghana fan went viral in which, in his own way, he appeared to call on help from supernatural forces. And what can you say, it worked. But the surprises did not end there. During the match, Uzbek player Khusanov was involved in an incident that went viral within minutes. In trying to stop a Luis Diaz counterattack, the Asian player went in on the Colombian’s legs, but in the collision he also hit the cameraman on the touchline, who was literally knocked over. Keep, loan and sell - the Albion Unlimited view
[Getty Images]In recent weeks, we asked you which Brighton players you would choose to keep, loan and sell this summer transfer window and now BBC Radio Sussex have had their say. Host of the Albion Unlimited podcast Johnny Cantor, floated numerous names for each category alongside former Brighton striker Warren Aspinall, but has ultimately settled on these three players. "I am going to keep Olivier Boscagli," Cantor said. "I think he could be a really good player. I know he's spoken to me quite a few times about how frustrated he is about not playing regularly; he's played in the Champions League, been at a big club and come to Albion and he's not playing as much as he wants."So he may be thinking, and I'm not saying he is, that he's in the prime of his career at 28-years-old and thinking 'right I need to get out whether on loan or somewhere else' but I would keep him because I think he's going to be vital – particularly in Europe."In terms of loan, I'm going to go for Tommy Watson. We need to find a club where he's going to play regularly. I don't know where that is, it wasn't at Millwall, and I really feel like he needs to find somewhere where he's happy."For which player he would sell, Cantor agreed with the fans' conclusion."I'm going to go for the same as all the others – I think Carlos Baleba. That ship has sailed now and I think it's time to maybe find a place for him and move on in the midfield."They will need more of a physical presence because I do thinkg Baleba does have that and he's probably the best at it at Albion but for me, if it wasn't Brajan Gruda, I'd go for Baleba."Listen to the full episode and hear Aspinall's three players on BBC Sounds here

Giants Reacts fan survey: How has Buster Posey performed?

Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Giants fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys. This season has been an unmitigated disaster for the San Francisco Giants. The bulk of their offseason transactions haven’t paid off. The biggest moves from last year — signing Willy Adames and trading for Rafael Devers — are currently backfiring. And to this point, the splash move of the winter — hiring Tony Vitello straight from the college ranks — hasn’t really panned out.On the one hand, it’s early. Buster Posey has only been President of Baseball Operations for a season and a half, and he’s approaching trade deadline season, which he aced a year ago. On the other hand, the Giants have been one of baseball worst teams this year, while also committing numerous unforced errors on and off the field. Things just aren’t right. So we wanted to poll the community on the man at the top: Posey. How are you feeling about him halfway through his second season at the helm? Please take our survey

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The third major championship of the golf season is here, with the 126th U.S. Open set for Father's Day weekend at Shinnecock Hills. The Southampton, New York club is hosting the tournament for the sixth time, dating to the second U.S. Open championship in 1896. The course provides a notoriously difficult test for the world's best golfers; of the four U.S. Opens held at Shinnecock in the modern era, only Retief Goosen in 2004 (-4) won with a score better than 1 under par.The most recent U.S. Open winner there was Brooks Koepka (+1) in 2018 and he'll be looking for his first major win since the 2023 PGA Championship this week. His best finish at a major since then was a tie for 12th in last year's U.S. Open at Oakmont, where J.J. Spaun won his first major title. While you never quite know what you'll get at a U.S. Open, the usual suspects are favoured entering the tournament. The invite-only celebration will be livestreamed and kicks off a weekend of events centered around the Obama Presidential Center, which opens to the general public on Juneteenth.President Donald Trump is not among the announced guests. With a sledgehammer and a shovel, volunteers raced to save passengers in Texas plane crash
People attempt to pull passengers out of a plane after it crashed on a highway Tuesday, June 16, 2026, in Laredo, Texas. (Zayra Garza via AP)2026-06-18T04:32:44Z The business jet barreled cockeyed down the dark highway, knocking down one light pole after another, an orange glow of sparks trailing it. From a distance, Ivan Franco thought it must be a car. But as he approached in his tow truck, he saw it was a plane — broken in half, its fuselage resting on its side, bright fire beginning to rise above. He stopped and rifled through the rescue kit his company keeps in the truck, grabbing a sledgehammer as well as three fire extinguishers, which he handed off to police officers.“At that moment, you don’t think much about what to do, because I knew the plane could explode since it was on fire,” Franco told The Associated Press in Spanish. “My idea was to try to break the windows because the pilots hadn’t come out yet.”Franco was one of several motorists who happened across the crash in Laredo, Texas, late Tuesday night and rushed to help — putting their own lives in danger to help those on board escape as smoke filled the cabin. Passersby helped save livesPolice were also on the scene quickly, and their teamwork with the good Samaritans undoubtedly saved lives, officials said.“The officers and the good Samaritans that went to the scene, our firefighters that responded — I do also want to commend each and every one of them,” Laredo Police Chief Mike Rodriguez said during a news conference Wednesday. He said he asked his staff to track down all the civilians who helped. The Cessna Citation Latitude twin jet departed Tuesday evening from the Mexican resort city of San José del Cabo and was bound for Austin, Texas, the FAA said in a statement. The plane was operated by NetJets, a company owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway that lets people buy part ownership in private jets. NetJets said in a statement that it was cooperating with authorities. The crash occurred after its pilots reported mechanical problems while requesting an emergency landing at a nearby airport. The fuselage came to rest across a concrete barrier, while its tail broke off and fell to a lower section of roadway. Read More One person was killed: Joshua Baer, a leader in Texas’ technology and startup sectors. Three teenage passengers and two pilots survived, as did a person in a truck struck by the plane as it crashed. Authorities have not released more detail about the passengers’ connections to one another. Investigators combed through wreckage Wednesday for clues to the cause. It was the third significant aviation accident in as many days in the U.S. A B-52 crashed Monday during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California and killed all eight people aboard, while on Sunday, 12 people were killed when a plane on a skydiving outing in Missouri crashed. She recorded video as her husband ran to help.“It looked like part of a movie. I was in shock,” Garza said. Most worrisome was the fire: “I was concerned that it could have just exploded at any time.”Garza saw people leave their cars to try to smash the cockpit glass. Her video shows the aircraft’s door popping open slightly from inside as a voice cries “Help! Help! Help!” The rescuers strain to lift the door farther open as the three teenagers dart out, followed quickly by one pilot and then by another.Franco, a 23-year-old from Laredo, frantically swung the sledgehammer through heavy smoke. Others struck at the window with a shovel and tools from their own vehicles. Cockpit windows are designed not to shatterThey accomplished little more than spiderwebbing the cockpit window with small cracks: Airplane windshields have multiple layers of glass and are designed to remain structurally sound even if the outer layer shatters. The windows must be able to withstand a bird strike at cruising speed and hold up to extreme pressure differences at high altitudes.“They are basically bulletproof,” said retired airline pilot John Cox, who is CEO of Safety Operating Systems.Police officers tried to remove the final person inside — Baer — as the smoke grew thicker. Officers doubled over coughing after turning away from the smoke.Eventually firefighters with oxygen masks were able to get inside. Firefighters also removed a dog from the plane that was suffering from smoke inhalation. The dog was turned over to animal control and was expected to survive, said Jose Baeza, an investigator with the Laredo Police Department.Five officers were treated for smoke inhalation; the five people who survived the crash were also released from a hospital. As the plane crashed on the northbound lanes of the highway, its wing hit a truck traveling southbound. The driver of that vehicle also survived, Baeza said. There has been an outpouring of support on social media for those who stopped to help, heralding their bravery and selflessness. Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño called it “nothing short of a miracle that this tragedy did not become a mass fatality event,” thanks in part to the late hour when the crash occurred and the quick action of first responders.Franco said that as he tried to help, all he could think of was getting people out of the plane. But to do it, he had to conquer another feeling. “You’re in constant fear,” he said. “You don’t know what situation you’re in.”___Johnson and Golden reported from Seattle. One team is already off the Red Sox’s list for an Aroldis Chapman trade, and it’s not the Yankees
One team is already off the Red Sox’s list for an Aroldis Chapman trade, and it’s not the Yankees originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The National League Central has been one of the more competitive divisions in Major League Baseball this season. While every team was above .500 for much of the year, there's now just one team that isn't, with the Cincinnati Reds sitting at 35-37. The Reds have done some nice things throughout the year, but as a whole, haven't been able to compete at the level everyone expected. The offense, at times, can be very good, and the same can be said for one of the better pitching staffs in Major League Baseball. However, the bullpen has been a major concern, and until that changes, there will be legitimate questions about whether Cincinnati can actually compete with high-end teams in the second half or make the postseason.Trading for somebody like Aroldis Chapman could make a lot of sense, but according to one recent report, the chances of that happening are very low, giving the Boston Red Sox another team that likely won't be on Chapman's list of potential trade partners.“The Reds have made it clear that bullpen is their No. 1 priority, but trading for a “rental” such as Chapman doesn’t make much sense because their team is just not good enough to make that type of deal. To give up the prospect package that it would take to acquire Chapman would be a long-term mistake. I don’t think it’s a possibility, at least at this year’s deadline,” Jim Bowden wrote. If the Red Sox move on from Chapman, doing right by him and sending him to a contending team would be the right thing to do. Not to say that Craig Breslow should worry about that, but doing right by his veterans is often something he should at least attempt to do. Not that the Reds are a terrible team and in a bad spot right now, but there are far better teams out there for his services.More MLB news:Sleeper team heating up as Tarik Skubal trade candidateBraves get trade updates on Tarik Skubal, Freddy Peralta, and Joe RyanYankees get best possible news on Tarik Skubal tradeDodgers get great trade news on Tarik Skubal before trade deadlineBraves general manager joins shocking list ahead of MLB trade deadline

‘I hope it’s nothing more’ – Tuchel sweating over Rice fitness after Arsenal man complained about discomfort as England beat Croatia 4-2
‘I hope it’s nothing more’ – Tuchel sweating over Rice fitness after Arsenal man complained about discomfort as England beat Croatia 4-2England midfielder Declan Rice played a key role as England claimed a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening Group L game.Rice bagged an assist after delivering a stellar corner-kick that Harry Kane converted with precision. The Arsenal star recorded 52 touches, played four key passes, won 2/4 duels, recovered the ball four times, and made two progressive carries. However, England boss Thomas Tuchel brought off the 27-year-old in the 72nd minute as he looked a bit in discomfort.Fans will be worried about Rice’s fitness as he has endured an extended/gruelling campaign with the Gunners.Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) chief executive Maheta Molango highlighted Rice as one player at risk of injury due to the many minutes logged across the football calendar.Thankfully, Tuchel allayed fears that Rice had picked up a knock before the Three Lions’ games against Tuesday, June 23, and Panama four days later. The German tactician said (via Henry Winter) that Declan pointed to his lower back and upper hamstring and feels some discomfort.“I didn’t want to take any risks. It was a moment to protect him. I hope it’s nothing more. Declan reassured me at the end, it’s good. It’s nothing big to worry about.”England cannot afford for Rice to pick up an injury. He is key to their chances of winning this World Cup.His winning experience, leadership, drive, and ball-winning prowess make him one of one in this squad. When he is on the pitch, England look more controlled, aggressive, and secure in transition. If this discomfort lingers, Tuchel will be forced to rethink the midfield set-up. His absence would be a major blow to England’s tournament rhythm and authority.England cannot replace his presence in full flow, and their World Cup hopes may well hinge on his availability from here on out.

Perez ready to push to sign Olise for Real Madrid despite €200m Bayern rebuffReal Madrid president Florentino Perez is determined to sign Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise despite the Bundesliga champions making it clear they have no intention of entertaining offers.Per Mundo Deportivo, Olise is viewed as one of the club’s dream Galactico signings after an outstanding campaign in which he bagged 22 goals and 31 assists in 57 appearances. The France international is bolstering his reputation this summer with impressive displays for Les Bleus at the World Cup, recording a brace of assists on his debut.Perez has announced he will make a blockbuster attacking addition, and the 24-year-old fits the bill.During his presidential election campaign, he pledged to bring a marquee signing to the Santiago Bernabeu, with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez reported as the primary target. However, Atletico ruled out any possibility of a sale, while some figures close to Real believe Olise has always been the club’s preferred long-term objective. The former Crystal Palace winger has enjoyed a sensational rise since moving to Bayern, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players. His performances have earned him Madrid’s admiration, even as Bayern maintain an uncompromising stance over his future. The German champions are understood to have informed interested parties that Olise is not for sale at any price.Their honorary president, Uli Hoeness, is suggesting they would reject bids in the region of €200 million. That valuation has done little to cool Madrid’s interest. Perez is prepared to test Bayern’s resolve regardless.Preliminary contacts have already been made with both the Bundesliga club and representatives close to the player to assess whether any opportunity could emerge later in the transfer window.Real Madrid recognise that completing such a deal would be extraordinarily difficult, particularly given Bayern’s firm position and Olise’s importance to Vincent Kompany’s side.Even so, the Spanish giants are refusing to abandon hope, with Perez convinced the electrifying winger possesses the quality and star power to thrive at the Bernabeu.

Arsenal ready bid to sign PSG star Bradley Barcola
Arsenal ready bid to sign PSG star Bradley BarcolaArsenal are stepping up their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. According to The Independent, the Gunners are ready to submit a formal offer for the Frenchman.Arsenal are determined to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s attack this summer, with Barcola emerging as one of the club’s leading targets following another impressive campaign.Despite being behind Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the pecking order, he still managed 13 goals and seven assists in 49 appearances. The former Lyon forward was looking unstoppable in the first half of the season until an injury slowed his momentum. The 23-year-old is guilty of missing many big chances, but his ability to find space in the opposition backline is a useful weapon.Barcola marked his FIFA World Cup debut with a goal in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal days ago.His brilliant run and composed chipped finish underlined why he is one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents.Arteta is keen to add quality and competition across his forward line, with Barcola viewed as a player capable of immediately challenging for a starting role on the left flank. He is a much-needed upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in Barcola in recent months. However, Arsenal appear to be making the strongest move as they seek another statement signing.PSG would ideally like to retain Barcola as he is a dangerous force under Luis Enrique, but the Champions League winners are also open to reshaping their attack.PSG’s interest in Arsenal-linked duo Julian Alvarez and Morgan Rogers is reportedly a reason why they are open to selling.Despite lifting the Premier League title and reaching the Champions League final, where they were beaten by PSG, the north London club wants another go for Europe’s biggest honours.A move for Barcola would be a major statement of intent as Arsenal look to retain their Premier League crown and finally claim that elusive Champions League title.

World Cup 2026: Golden boot battle heats up, Ronaldo off to frustrating start, Spain called for calm
World Cup 2026: Golden boot battle heats up, Ronaldo off to frustrating start, Spain called for calmRecords have already started falling, stars are laying down their markers and the opening days of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have left plenty to unpack. Not all heavy hitters have lived up to expectations, though, with several favourites already stumbling out of the gate.Read on, as we revisit several key talking points.Golden Boot race to go down to the wireFormer Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi held up their end of the bargain at the start of the tournament. Both coming from a different universe, both aspiring to create more World Cup history, the superstar duo hit the ground running in astonishing fashion. Mbappe inspired France to a 3-1 win over Senegal with a sublime second-half brace, becoming the first player in World Cup history to score at least two goals in five different games. In addition to overtaking Olivier Giroud as Les Bleus’ all-time top scorer, the Real Madrid talisman is now only two goals away from equalling Miroslav Klose’s World Cup scoring record. However, Messi beat the 27-year-old to the punch, drawing level with the legendary German striker, courtesy of his first-ever World Cup hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 rout of Algeria. After leading his country to World Cup glory in Qatar four years ago, La Pulga no longer has a point to prove. Yet, the Inter Miami megastar looks keen to settle the ‘GOAT’ debate once and for all.Mbappe and Messi have always been the point of difference, which also applies to Manchester City’s goalscoring machine, Erling Haaland, who excelled on his World Cup debut, netting a first-half brace to set the tone for Norway’s 4-1 humbling of Iraq.If matchday one was any indication, the battle for the Golden Boot could become one of the defining stories of this World Cup.No fairytale start for CR7 & PortugalFour years since Messi’s triumph in the Middle East, the eyes of the entire footballing world have turned to one man. Carrying the weight of expectations, Cristiano Ronaldo captained Portugal in their Group K opener against DR Congo.Seeking the one trophy that has defined so many careers and the one that is still missing from his glittering trophy cabinet, the 41-year-old has arrived in North America with one single purpose – to bring the World Cup home. However, Ronaldo is also a fierce competitor who has always paid attention to the way he’s perceived in world football, and after Messi’s show in Kansas City, he must have felt compelled to deliver a statement of his own.It was nothing like that. Congo had no intention of backing down in their first-ever World Cup outing despite facing an early deficit, and they ultimately held Roberto Martinez’s toothless team to a 1-1 draw.Meanwhile, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner often cut a frustrated figure, spending most of the game completely isolated in the box, without quality service and with no room to demonstrate his trademark shooting ability.Sebastien Desabre’s side did a fantastic job making one of the greatest footballers of all time look irrelevant in their tournament debut. To put things in perspective, Ronaldo finished the match with two idle shots off target. It was far from an ideal start for Portugal and their skipper.Spain urged to ‘swallow the disappointment’Spain headed into this summer’s tournament as bookmakers’ top pick to lift the trophy after their dominant 2024 UEFA European Championship run, but they faltered in their opening game.Debutants Cape Verde pulled off a miracle in Atlanta, holding La Furia Roja to a stunning 0-0 draw. Not being able to count on standout wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams from the start was a mitigating circumstance, not an excuse.Blasted by the media, Luis de la Fuente’s charges returned to their Tennessee training base six days before getting the chance to bounce back in a must-win clash against Saudi Arabia.Spain’s underwhelming result in their opening Group H game has seemingly knocked the wind out of their sails, piling pressure on the reigning European champions ahead of round two. However, during La Furia Roja’s recent press conference (via The Guardian), Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino insisted there’s no room for panic, admitting that “you have to swallow the disappointment.”Merino also urged his teammates “to recover as soon as we can.”With the margin for error growing thin, it’s reasonable to assume De la Fuente will restore several of his elite performers to the starting XI, with Yamal and Williams expected to return as the Iberian giants seek an immediate response.Top football storiesScott Parker column: Jude Bellingham is not fully appreciated in EnglandProtesters to rally against World Cup sponsor Hyundai before Mexico gameWill Kylian Mbappe become the World Cup’s greatest player?Football Today featuresTuchel’s England future hinges on World Cup successWorld Cup 2026: Mbappe lights up MetLife Stadium, Ronaldo’s last shot begins, England dare to believe againTunisia set to appoint Herve Renard as new head coachWhat to watchMatchday two kicks off with a pair of ‘make or break’ fixtures. After suffering defeat at the start of their first World Cup campaign since 2006, the Czech Republic cannot afford a slip-up against South Africa, who will be out to avenge a 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico. You’d need to go back to 1970 for the last time the Czechs lost their opening two World Cup matches, and they appear a good value to get back on track at the expense of Bafana Bafana’s knockout ambitions. In Group B, Switzerland and Bosnia & Herzegovina lock horns in a high-stakes showdown, looking to take a giant step towards qualification after drawing their curtain-raising games.Having lost just two of their last 17 group-stage outings at major tournaments, Murat Yakin’s men head into proceedings as favourites, but they’d be naive to underestimate the Dragons, especially after being held by Qatar on day one.Despite facing long odds, Bosnia can take confidence from winning the only previous meeting between the sides, though it was a friendly in 2016.

Barcelona prepared to facilitate summer exit as forgotten star looks for solution beyond La Liga
Barcelona prepared to facilitate summer exit as forgotten star looks for solution beyond La LigaInaki Pena’s time at Barcelona appears to be drawing to a close, with the goalkeeper keen to settle his future before the club’s pre-season preparations begin next month. The 27-year-old has now accepted that he is not part of Hansi Flick’s plans for the upcoming campaign, and with Barcelona’s goalkeeping hierarchy already defined, a summer exit is increasingly viewed as the most likely outcome.According to Mundo Deportivo, Pena is eager to avoid any uncertainty and wants his next move finalised as soon as possible. While he remains under contract with Barcelona until 2029, both player and club appear to be moving towards the same conclusion: a separation before the new season gets underway.Pena preparing for life away from SpainAfter spending last season away from Camp Nou, Pena returned fully aware that breaking back into Barcelona’s long-term plans would be a difficult task. Inaki Pena was at Elche last season. (Photo by Mateo Villalba Sanchez/Getty Images)That situation has now become much clearer following internal discussions regarding the squad for next season.Ideally, the goalkeeper is expected to report back on July 13 alongside Barcelona players who are not involved in the FIFA World Cup for the pre-season preparation. However, there is growing confidence that his future could be resolved before then.Barcelona are understood to be willing to facilitate his departure and are not expected to create obstacles if a suitable solution is found. The Catalan club’s priority is to reach an agreement that benefits all parties while maintaining some level of control over any future transfer value.Pena prefers overseas moveInaki Pena is eager to leave Barcelona. (Photo by Rafa Babot/Getty Images)The outlet reports that, despite attracting attention from clubs in La Liga, Pena has decided to continue his career outside Spain. That choice has narrowed the list of possible destinations, with clubs from Central Europe emerging as potential options. Turkey is also being mentioned as a realistic possibility given the goalkeeper’s positive previous experience at Galatasaray, where he spent part of the 2021/22 season on loan. For now, the player’s camp is waiting for concrete offers to arrive, but there is optimism that negotiations could accelerate in the coming days. Simply put, Pena’s objective is to resolve his future quickly and begin preparations with his new club ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Watch every goal from matchday seven of the 2026 World Cup
ARLINGTON, TEXAS - JUNE 17: Harry Kane #9 of England scores his team's first goal from the penalty spot during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L match between England and Croatia at Dallas Stadium on June 17, 2026 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Eddie Keogh - The FA/The FA via Getty Images) | The FA via Getty Images Matchday seven of the 2026 FIFA World Cup promised more of the same, as the current edition of the tournament continues to draw eyes despite the controversies off the pitch. Portugal faced off against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or DR Congo in short. Much like their Iberian neighbors Spain, they went away disappointed, succumbing to a 1-1 draw against a team more than 30 places below them. Then England went and soundly defeated Croatia, solidifying their position as one of the contenders for the trophy. Ghana vs Panama was a bit of a lowlight, compensated by the drama of an extremely late winner. Then Colombia went on to struggle against Uzbekistan, a team playing their first ever World Cup. If a few shots were a little more accurate, we could have been talking about a different result. Talk about dramatic. Check out all the goals, highlights, and more from the seventh matchday of the FIFA World Cup!Oh look a header in the box, of course it’s Ronal … wait what?João Neves' header was a work of art 🇵🇹What a start for Portugal pic.twitter.com/WPmfe4rytb— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) June 17, 2026A scrumptious delivery by Pedro Neto saw João Neves head the ball in after just six minutes played. Talk about an early breakthrough. Honestly, you’d expect Cristiano Ronaldo to get on the end of that and not the guy who’s 171cm tall. Brilliant header, though. Everyone watching it thought the same thing: “Too easy.” It wasn’t easy, Kane just makes it look easy. This goal saw Kane tie Gary Lineker as England’s top scorer at the FIFA World Cup. Cucho Hernández doesn’t think that way. Somehow he chased it down, fended off his defender, then put a perfect cross into the box. Jaminton Campaz converted with a leaping header, sealing the game for Colombia. His goal ended up being the final one of the matchday, which saw 13 goals scored and extremely late winners. Maybe that was the theme of the day. Now, with their first games all played, England seem to have a commanding lead and are well-positioned to qualify at the top of Group L. For the rest, it’s more of a mixed bag. Colombia put themselves in a good position with a win, but their performance did not inspire confidence. Things could change a lot in the coming weeks, as this tournament has proven exceptionally volatile. We’ll just have to wait and see. Christie pursues more dreams on same stage as idol Messi
Ryan Christie hopes to add to his 69 Scotland caps against Morocco [PA Media]Relaxing with his team-mates in their hotel in uptown Charlotte, Ryan Christie watched the Lionel Messi show on Tuesday evening. Agog, like the rest of us. An international footballer, yes, but in those moments of magic from the great man, just another mortal."When you chill out a bit, you turn back into a spectator," said the Bournemouth and Scotland midfielder."Watching Messi [scoring a hat-trick against Algeria] and stuff like that, it's incredible to watch that happen. It's immense and pretty surreal, to be honest."When I was younger, I idolised Messi, so to think you're playing on the same kind of stage as him now is pretty cool, especially the age he's at. Watching him do his thing was unbelievable."Tuesday was moving day in America, to an extent. A treble for Messi and doubles for Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland - the big boys came out to play. The tournament seemed to find another gear in the process. For Christie, there was never any thought in his young head that he would ever make it to a stage like this. "Non-existent," he said. "I don't know if it sounds bad to say that."I had aspirations of playing for Scotland when I was growing up - that was my pinnacle - but you didn't ever think further than that. I never, ever envisioned playing at a Euros, never mind the World Cup."I didn't watch Scotland in a major tournament, so in my head that just wasn't really a possibility at that point - and probably why, all those years down the line, when we had that night in Serbia [qualifying for the first Euros under Steve Clarke] it hit home so much."How sweltering Scotland can handle World Cup heatMeet the striker who doesn't score often - but Scotland win when he doesWhat could Scotland learn from Cape Verde as Morocco loom?Christie, famously and endearingly, became very emotional in the aftermath of that victory. "[The tears] were because it felt so out of reach for me and a few of the other boys," he said."So, to be doing this here is incredible. Everybody has that feeling that you're playing on a stage that literally all the eyes across the globe are watching you. You're just desperate to try and make a name for yourself."Following a cameo appearance off the bench against Haiti, the chance to make his mark could come from the start against the highly-dangerous Morocco in Boston on Friday (2300 BST).Scotland are considerable underdogs, which is fair enough. But every underdog can have their day and Christie's team have it within them to prove sticky opponents for Morocco. He takes confidence, he said, from the fact that Scotland have gone toe-to-toe with "teams that are as good as Morocco" in recent years. At 31, he's no wide-eyed innocent. He's not naive, he knows how brutally hard this is going to be against Morocco. He knows that Scotland will not dominate possession or limit Morocco to zero chances."We need to keep those numbers as low as possible and then do our bit when we do get the chance to hurt them," he explained.Christie also believes Scotland can make it hard for Morocco to break them down. Asked if he truly thinks that his boys can win, he replied: "Absolutely. I think we've got to think like that. Especially after the first result against Haiti."We're trying not to get too ahead of ourselves, but at the same time, you've got to draw confidence from that and ride the wave a little bit."Christie has just signed a new deal with Bournemouth and will remain at the club until 2029. He is, as they say, in a good place. Messi's exploits at 38 - he will be 39 this month - offers Christie a world of encouragement that this World Cup doesn't necessarily have to be his last.In England, he sees players getting better with age, guys in their mid-30s who are still operating well at the top level. "Some are pushing for the high-30s and still churning out unbelievable performances week in, week out," he said.Head coach Clarke has spoken often about the dynamic of starters and finishers, the importance of having influential players coming off the bench late on. That was the scenario Christie found himself in against Haiti. Tense moments, those.Would he rather be a starter or a finisher? "I honestly don't mind," he commented. "I'm not too sure, to be honest. The manager's been very, very big on that, especially since we've come into the camp."He's making everybody realise that every single person in our squad is going to be needed at some point, whether some boys play three, four, five minutes, some players might play every minute, but everybody's got a massive part to play. Everybody's taking that on and doing their bit so far."So to Boston for Morocco on Friday. One point and Scotland are more or less guaranteed a place in the knockouts. One stellar 90-minute performance, however challenging, and they're history makers."It's a dream come true to even play in a World Cup, but you have to quickly adjust your targets and adjust your mindset," added Christie. "From being happy to be here you want to go and create more and keep pushing the bar. The manager has kept the foot to the floor."Having achieved one dream by making it to America, Christie is now pursuing another. UN's Baerbock renews criticism of FIFA over World Cup entry issues
UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock has renewed her criticism of world football governing body FIFA over denied entries at the World Cup.Speaking at an event at the German House of Soccer in New York on Wednesday, the former German foreign minister said sport lived from bringing people together.Baerbock said entry and visa issues were therefore not a minor matter, as people could only come together and celebrate football if they were able to do so everywhere. FIFA would have to review the issue during and after the World Cup, she added.US entry rules have become a major issue around the tournament, with several nations affected.Baerbock had earlier criticized FIFA's cautious response in a podcast, particularly in the case of Somali referee Omar Artan, who was not allowed to enter the country.Baerbock said sport, and football in particular, opened doors in a divided world. She said sport connected people also because everyone knew they had to follow the rules. If the world were a little more like a football pitch, where even the biggest superstar had to follow the rules, it would be more peaceful, she said.Baerbock visited the fan gathering in New York to attend an award ceremony for former Germany great and 2014 World Cup winner Thomas Müller. The former Bayern Munich star now plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada and is working as a pundit for German television during the World Cup.

Crysencio Summerville: United launch formal enquiry
Crysencio Summerville: United launch formal enquiry Manchester United are looking to strengthen out wide, with Michael Carrick wanting a specialist to operate down the left flank.Crysencio Summerville has emerged as a concrete target, even though West Ham are proving a tough nut to crack during negotiations.A move for the Dutchman depends on INEOS’ ability to offload Marcus Rashford, but the co-owners seem confident of getting rid of the Mancunian if TEAMtalk are to be believed. They have claimed that the Red Devils have opened negotiations with the Hammers, launching a formal enquiry for the winger, who is lighting up the World Cup.United launch formal enquiry for Crysencio SummervilleIt has previously been relayed by The Peoples Person that the 24-year-old’s wage demands have meant there is very little chance for Serie A clubs to clinch a deal. That leaves Premier League clubs in pole position, with Tottenham Hotspur also interested in the former Leeds wide man.“Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have made moves to sign Crysencio Summerville from West Ham United, TEAMtalk understands.“The Hammers are understood to value the winger at around £50 million, a fee that reflects his potential and contract until 2029, although it may prove negotiable given their need to balance the books.Tottenham Hotspur are the main rivals in the race“Sources have told us that Manchester United have made formal enquiries and view Summerville as a prime candidate for the left-wing position, particularly if Marcus Rashford departs. We understand that the 24-year-old former Leeds star ranks highly in Manchester United’s data analysis.“Tottenham Hotspur also retain strong interest in Summerville. Sources have stated that Tottenham have contacted West Ham and see Summerville as a versatile attacking option, potentially as cover or an alternative to other targets.”West Ham will look to trigger a possible bidding war to extract the best possible price, but INEOS will be wary of such an attempt. The 20-time English league champions are also keen on Iliman Ndiaye and Yan Diomande should a move for Crysencio Summerville not work out.For now, United’s focus seems to be on agreeing a deal with West Ham for Mateus Fernandes amid a late push from Real Madrid as Michael Carrick targets a midfield overhaul.Feature image Julian Finney via Getty Imagesonline pollsThe Peoples Person has been one of the world’s leading Man United news sites for over a decade. Los Angeles warehouse fire prompts shelter-in-place orders due to hazardous air

Hong)2026-06-18T00:50:58Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fire at a massive warehouse blackened the skies near downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, prompting shelter-in-place orders in the area due to the risk of hazardous air.Los Angeles firefighters responded around 2:30 p.m. to the blaze, which was sending large plumes of dark smoke into the air in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. Local news stations showed smoke billowing from the burning roof of the warehouse, which was covered in solar panels.Officials issued an alert to the area shortly after, warning of “hazardous materials nearby.” Residents were told to close all windows, doors and vents, turn off air conditioning and bring people and pets to an inside room.Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Jennifer Middleton said there was previous concern over the fire burning an ammonia line, but that danger had “dissipated.” The roof blaze had been extinguished by late afternoon and firefighters were entering the building to assess the interior, Middleton said. Switzerland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina – Predicted lineup and team news
Switzerland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina – Predicted lineup and team newsSwitzerland arrive at Los Angeles Stadium tonight needing a major reaction following their deeply frustrating tournament opener.Murat Yakin watched his squad completely dominate possession against the Asian Champions Qatar before suffering a painful late equaliser. The Schweizer Nati created numerous clear opportunities and registered 26 shots without finding a winner. That wasteful performance kept the underdogs alive and eventually cost them two valuable points. Yakin now demands a far more clinical attacking display from his frontline. Securing maximum points against Bosnia-Herzegovina remains absolutely vital before facing co-hosts Canada.Switzerland team newsA completely healthy roster gives Yakin total tactical freedom ahead of this vital fixture. The Swiss coach can field his strongest available lineup without any forced alterations. Gregor Kobel will likely retain his spot between the posts following a relatively quiet opening game.Ahead of the goalkeeper, Manuel Akanji could partner Nico Elvedi to anchor a steady defence. Experienced full-backs Ricardo Rodríguez and Denis Zakaria look set to guard the defensive flanks.Midfield control rests with captain Granit Xhaka, who dictates the match tempo from deep. Remo Freuler and Michel Aebischer provide essential defensive coverage alongside their veteran leader.Yakin might still shuffle his attacking pack despite dominating the previous match. Noah Okafor offers incredible pace if selected to freshen up the frontline. Teenage talent Johan Manzambi also pushes hard for his first tournament start. That said, powerful forward Breel Embolo remains a natural starter to lead the line. Embolo opened his World Cup account against Qatar and represents their main attacking threat. Dan Ndoye will use his explosive acceleration to stretch the opposition defence.Switzerland predicted lineupSwitzerland possible starting XI: Kobel; Zakaria, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodríguez; Aebischer, Xhaka, Freuler; Ndoye, Embolo, ManzambiWhen will the match kick off?The FIFA World Cup group match kicks off at 20:00 BST tonight. How to watch Switzerland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina?The match will be broadcast live on BBC, ITV1 and STV in the UK.Read more – England player ratings vs Croatia: Kane and Bellingham star in World Cup openerSee Also- FIFA World Cup: The top goalscorers in World Cup historyFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

Lakers just got the biggest update on LeBron James’ free agency yet
Lakers just got the biggest update on LeBron James’ free agency yet originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Free agency is just about two weeks away in the NBA, a very exciting time for fans and teams. The Los Angeles Lakers have one of the biggest questions to answer during this summer's free agency, with questions continuing to arise on what the future of LeBron James might look like, not only in the NBA, but more importantly, in Los Angeles.James has indicated that he wants to play, so there's at least reason to believe he could end up back in Los Angeles. It remains uncertain whether the Lakers will give him what he wants, but the latest reports suggest he intends to reach a deal with them.“I think LeBron’s intention is to play. I think the focus now is on finalizing a deal with the Lakers. Right now, he’s allowed to negotiate with them, and I believe they are negotiating. They are going back and forth. Free agency begins in 14 days, and in the next 14 days, I think he’s going to try to make a deal with the Lakers.“The amount of the deal might depend on what else the Lakers are able to do in free agency. If, in 14 days, he is at an impasse with the Lakers, and there is no deal there, then I think other teams, like the Cavs, should stand to attention. But the league generally believes the two sides are going to come together,” Brian Windhorst of ESPN said. One interesting point there was that if the Lakers sign other free agents, it will impact how much money they have to give James.I'd assume that if the Lakers go that direction, there's a better chance they'll give James the money he's looking for before making other moves. To lose James just to sign average free agents doesn't make a whole lot of sense.More NBA news:Heat’s dream LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo outcome will leave fans salivatingWarriors get Kristaps Porzingis free agency updateLakers fans will jump with joy after Deandre Ayton free agency newsSpurs’ Julian Champagnie just got an insane $100M contract planNew Austin Reaves update shows Lakers could actually lose young star

2026 World Cup, Day 8: Czech Republic vs. South Africa; Switzerland vs. Bosnia & Herzegovina; Canada vs. Qatar; Mexico vs. South Korea
DALLAS, TEXAS - JUNE 17: General stadium view as Ivan Perisic of Croatia is closed down by Elliot Anderson of England during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L match between England and Croatia at Dallas Stadium on June 17, 2026 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Michael Steele/Getty Images) | Getty Images Well, we’ve finally had our first stinker of this World Cup. Ghana and Panama did a whole lot of running about but neither side managed to do anything signifcantly entertaining … until about the last few minutes plus stoppage time, when Ghana snatched the win and all three points!England and Colombia both picked up wins as well, beating Croatia and Uzbekistan, respectively, unlike Portugal, who had to settle for a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. It was the African nation’s first goal and first point ever at the World Cup, causing the latest little shock at the tournament. So far, the expanded field has resulted in more shock results rather than an increase in blowouts, which is a surprising yet welcome development.Let’s hope it continues!CZECH REPUBLIC vs. SOUTH AFRICAWe begin the second set of group games with South Africa once again; this time they take on the Czech Republic, who almost snatched a point from South Korea in their first game. Bafana Bafana were chaotic, at best, last week against Mexico, finishing the game with just nine men on the pitch. Expect better from both sides in this one.Date / Time: Thursday, June 18, 2026, 12pm EDT; 5pm BSTVenue: Mercedes-Benz Arena, Atlanta, GA, USAReferee: Tori Penso (USA)On TV: FOX, Telemundo (USA); BBC One (UK); elsewhereStreaming online: FOX One, Peacock (USA); BBC iPlayer (UK)Chelsea interest: NoneSWITZERLAND vs. BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINAGroup B featured two 1-1 draws last week, so all teams have everything to play for. But not all 1-1 draws are equal: Switzerland were disappointing in theirs against Qatar; Bosnia were quite lucky in theirs against Canada.Date / Time: Thursday, June 18, 2026, 3pm EDT; 8pm BSTVenue: SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, CA, USAReferee: João Pinheiro (Portugal)On TV: FOX, Telemundo (USA); ITV 1 (UK); elsewhereStreaming online: FOX One, Peacock (USA); ITVx (UK)Chelsea interest: Former Chelsea midfielder Denis Zakaria started and played the full-90. But it was former Chelsea prospect Miro Muheim who made the bigger impact: he came on as a defensive sub in the 89th minute as the Swiss tried to lock down the 1-0 win, but would end up scoring the own goal to equalize for Qatar five minutes later. Oopsies. Own goal, by the way, leading the tournament in scoring, joint-top with Lionel Messi on three goals.CANADA vs. QATARCanada fell behind in the first half against Bosnia, and it took them nearly an hour to finally equalize through Cyle Larin. The hosts had plenty of chances before and after to win it, but could not make them count. Qatar survived similar pressure from Switzerland in their first game, so this could be yet another tight contest.Date / Time: Thursday, June 18, 2026, 6pm EDT; 11pm BSTVenue: BC Place, Vancouver, BC, CanadaReferee: Cristián Garay (Chile)On TV: FOX Sports 1, Telemundo (USA); ITV 1 (UK); elsewhereStreaming online: FOX One, Peacock (USA); ITVx (UK)Chelsea interest: NoneMEXICO vs. SOUTH KOREAMexico kicked off the World Cup with a bang, but then managed to produce a rather unimpressive 2-0 win over South Africa by the final whistle. A win’s a win, of course, and style points don’t count. But they’ll probably have to step up their game a bit against South Korea, who were also a bit wasteful against the Czech. They did come back to win in the end, but they’ll have to figure out what to do with a shockingly out of form Son Heung-min. Heat’s dream LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo outcome will leave fans salivating
Heat’s dream LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo outcome will leave fans salivating originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Miami Heat haven't been able to really find stars in free agency since LeBron James made the biggest decision in NBA history. James, who is undoubtedly a top-two player to ever play the game, with many even believing that he's the GOAT, now finds himself on the free-agent market once again. While he's much older at this stage of his career, now in his 40s, there's still reason to believe that he can be a nice piece for a contending team. With reports also indicating that the Heat are interested in Giannis Antetokounmpo, one reporter recently floated a dream scenario for Miami, one that likely isn't too realistic.“The Heat could accommodate a decent-sized James contract in a sign-and-trade by sending Andrew Wiggins to Los Angeles,” Sam Quinn wrote.“The Lakers have been linked to Wiggins since last offseason, and he could either opt in and spend a year there or the Lakers could work out a multi-year deal and make this a double sign-and-trade. The trio of James, Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo would at least make the Heat among the favorites in the Eastern Conference. Wiggins would be an ideal wing to help the Lakers out west.”If Miami were to get this creative and end up with Antetokounmpo, James, and continue to have a roster with Bam Adebayo and some of the other nice pieces on its roster, there's reason to believe that the Heat could be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. However, at this point, it's not rooted in reality.More NBA news:Warriors get Kristaps Porzingis free agency updateLakers fans will jump with joy after Deandre Ayton free agency newsSpurs’ Julian Champagnie just got an insane $100M contract planNew Austin Reaves update shows Lakers could actually lose young starCavaliers’ James Harden gets ‘stunning’ prediction that fans won’t love

Craig Breslow’s comments show Red Sox will fail at MLB trade deadline
Craig Breslow’s comments show Red Sox will fail at MLB trade deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Certain teams around Major League Baseball need to be very smart at this year's trade deadline. One of those teams is the Boston Red Sox, who have absolutely no reason to go out and make moves to improve their roster. I know that the Red Sox aren't as far away as it might seem, and one could argue that if a few things go the right way over the next few months, they can be a Wild Card playoff team, but I think it's absolutely insane to even think about adding players when they've played as poorly as they have throughout the season. That's why I'm a bit concerned about Craig Breslow's recent comments. Breslow, who should be on the hot seat more than anybody in baseball at the moment, went as far as to say that he needs to see how things are trending before the deadline before he makes a decision. I don't care if the Red Sox win 10 games in a row, I don't think anything has suggested that this team needs to be buyers at the deadline.“Where we are right now is there’s still a lot of games to be played between now and then, and more important than looking at most teams in the standings,” Breslow said, H/.T Heavy. “Right now, it’s most important to figure out how to play our best baseball. How to win more games and put ourselves in a better position… It’s kind of more art than science as you approach the deadline, because you need to think about where you are and where other teams are, but also kind of how you’re trending, right?”While I don't think that the Red Sox have any business adding players and need to trade guys, I can see a scenario in which it makes some sense to at least keep a couple of players around for the long term. To me, moving on from Aroldis Chapman would make sense, but if the Red Sox decide to keep him, I can at least understand the reasoning if they plan to compete next year. Still, they have no business worrying about adding at the deadline, even if things go as planned before August.More MLB news:Yankees top trade target already shut down by MLB insiderMets ready to make decisions on David Stearns and Carlos MendozaOne team is already off the Red Sox’s list for an Aroldis Chapman tradeSleeper team heating up as Tarik Skubal trade candidateBraves get trade updates on Tarik Skubal, Freddy Peralta, and Joe Ryan

Fans blast NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith for his World Cup take
Photo by Dave Kotinsky/Getty Images for SiriusXMStephen A. Smith has built a career on speaking confidently across the sports world, but his latest World Cup comment about France gave soccer fans an easy target. The ESPN analyst was discussing France during the 2026 World Cup after Didier Deschamps’ side opened with a 3-1 win over Senegal.France looked like one of the early tournament favorites again, but Smith’s wording made it sound as if the national team were still chasing a breakthrough that had never arrived. That is where the backlash began.Photo by Dave Kotinsky/Getty Images for SiriusXMStephen A. Smith gets France World Cup history badly wrongThe clip shared by Awful Announcing on X showed Smith asking a question that immediately confused soccer fans.“I’m wondering what France is going to do, could this be the year that they finally get it done and they win the World Cup?” Smith said. The problem is that France have already got it done recently. They won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, beating Croatia 4-2 in the final, and then reached another final in 2022 before losing to Argentina on penalties after a 3-3 draw.France also won the World Cup in 1998, meaning they are not a country waiting for a first title. In the current era, they have been one of the strongest tournament teams in international soccer, with Kylian Mbappe central to both their 2018 triumph and their 2022 run. That made Smith’s use of “finally” difficult to defend. France are trying to win another World Cup in 2026, not prove that they can win one for the first time.Fans rip Stephen A. Smith over France commentThe reaction online was immediate and blunt, with many fans arguing that Smith’s comment showed exactly why soccer coverage needs people who know the sport’s basic history. One fan wrote, “He’s such a g______ moron. He’s always been a moron.” Another said, “He can b_______ NBA topics but not soccer.”Others focused on how far off the comment sounded for a World Cup discussion. One reaction read, “Stephen A probably thinks the World Cup happens every year.”The criticism also turned toward the wider sports media landscape. One fan wrote, “That this guy gets paid millions of dollars a year to talk sports is a total indictment of the sports media industry.”Another summed up the frustration by saying, “This is the thing about Stephen A., let him talk about basketball. He’s embarrassing when he steps out.”Smith does not need to be a lifelong soccer voice to discuss the World Cup, but France’s recent history is not obscure. That is why the clip spread so quickly, and why the response from fans was so unforgiving.Read more:Stephen A. Smith’s embarrassing World Cup take linked to Wemby NBA finals defeatStephen A. What next for RB Leipzig after sacking Ole Werner?
What next for RB Leipzig after sacking Ole Werner?Ole Werner had just guided RB Leipzig back into the UEFA Champions League for the upcoming campaign but securing a return to European football in his first season in charge wasn’t enough to guarantee his job safety. On Wednesday, the Saxony club announced that they had parted ways with their head coach.“We were involved in the decision making process and analysed the season,” explained Jürgen Klopp, Head of Soccer at Red Bull. “Ole did a fantastic job; we qualified for the Champions League but we also have to look ahead at the same time.“When we considered what the workload might look like for us, Leipzig decided to make a change,” Klopp told MagentaTV. “Ole was released and a new coach will be announced soon.”That new coach is expected to be Martín Demichelis, currently of Mallorca. According to Sky Germany, Leipzig and the Argentine are in final negotiations over a contract until June 2028. Once an agreement is found, the Bundesliga club will activate the coach’s reported €2.5m exit clause.GGFN | Daniel Pinder
