SPORTS.YAHOO.COMVíctor Muñoz set for Liverpool medicalVíctor Muñoz set for Liverpool medicalLiverpool are close to completing the signing of winger Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna after triggering the player's release clause. The 22-year-old joined Osasuna from Real Madrid last summer but his performances have impressed enough for the Reds to trigger his £34.5 million release clause. With Muñoz currently a part of the Spain squad at the 2026 World Cup, the transfer still has some formalities left to complete, including a medical reportedly scheduled for next Wednesday according to journalist Will Unwin of The Guardian. However, Muñoz is said to have agreed a six-year contract with Liverpool which will make him the first signing of new manager Andoni Iraola.Muñoz played 36 games for Osasuna in all competitions in the 2025/26 campaign, scoring seven goals and making five assists.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup 2026 power rankings: England, Argentina and France make statements after round oneThe 2026 World Cup is fully into the swing of things with all teams now having played their opening match of the campaign in North America. After a build-up that centred around controversy, greed and conflict, fans have been captivated by some enthralling performances during round one of fixtures, with the likes of France and holders Argentina stamping their mark as rightful favourites. So much can change as the group stage progresses, but here’s how every team stacks up in The Independent’sWorld Cup 2026 power rankings, delving deeper into the top 10:1. Argentina 🇦🇷Lionel Messi hit a hat-trick for Argentina in their opener against Algeria (Getty)You could just put Lionel Messi’s name at the top of this list after round one. Argentina have gone into their World Cup defence with a side that threatened to grow stale, with a new generation of players not exactly coming through since the crowing glory of Qatar. But their strategy of four years ago remains effective: pass to Messi and let him work his magic. A scintillating hat-trick against Algeria had tears flowing as the 38-year-old equalled Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup goalscoring record, and with three points immediately on the board, Argentina’s hopes of back-to-back titles already burns bright.2. France 🇫🇷Kylian Mbappe starred for France as he surpassed Pele’s all-time World Cup goal tally (Getty)From one record to another, Kylian Mbappe stole the show against the Senegal to surpass Pele’s all-time World Cup goal tally. His quest to play in a third World Cup final at just 27 is up and running. Senegal were expected to pose a real challenge to Les Blues - they were of course the reigning Afcon champions, until it was decided weren’t anymore. But after a relatively impotent first half from Didier Deschamps’ side, they became unleashed after the break, their electrifying attack powering them to a devastating victory. Even first real VAR horror show of the tournament, baffling denying Mbappe a stonewall penalty when the score was goalless, couldn’t derail France on their way to the perfect start.3. England 🏴Harry Kane scored twice in England's World Cup opener (PA)Yes, it’s too early to start properly believing that England’s 60-year wait for World Cup glory will come this summer - but Thomas Tuchel’s boys got off to a pretty strong start in the United States. Harry Kane made sure to make his own Golden Boot statement off the back of Messi and Mbappe’s performances, with his brace integral in beating an ever-tricky Croatia side 4-2 in Arlington. Marks have to be taken off for surrendering the lead twice in the first half, something that resulted in Tuchel giving his players a stern team-talk at half-time. But they won relatively comfortably in the end, against the toughest opposition in their group on paper. You can’t ask for much more.4. Spain 🇪🇸Favourites Spain were held by Cape Verde in their opener (Reuters)The near-unanimous favourite among Indy Sport’s writers to lift the World Cup, Spain have gotten off to a pretty rocky start after being held to a 0-0 draw by debutants Cape Verde. This means they miss out on top spot in our power rankings, which would’ve probably been theirs if they had won, though a little bit of leeway can be given due to their lingering injury problems in the opener. Both Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams had to start on the bench, but each man did make a substitute cameo, which hints that they could be ready to play a greater role for the rest of the group stage.5. Germany 🇩🇪Germany thrashed Curacao after enduring a brief fright against the Caribbean minnow (Reuters)Seven goals in your World Cup opener, equalling the all-time competition record you set 20 years ago, seems like a sure-fire way of shooting right to the top of these power rankings. Maybe harshly, Germany have to settle for fifth due to the level of opposition; Curacao are smaller than the Isle of Man and their being here is a miracle in itself. The tiny Caribbean island also got one over on the four-time champions, snatching an equaliser on 21 minutes to give Germany a hefty scare - that alone knocks a few power points off. Then six more German goals flooded in as Julian Nagelsmann’s side demonstrated a ruthlessness that they have been lacking since 2014. Emulate this dominance against Ecuador or Ivory Coast and then we’ll start to really take the team formerly known as Die Mannschaft seriously.6. Portugal 🇵🇹Cristiano Ronaldo failed to impress in Portugal’s opener (Getty)“Leave the football before the football leaves you.” The immortal words of Jamie Carragher ring pretty true for Portugal’s 40-year-old poster boy, Cristiano Ronaldo, who put in a dismal display up top as Portugal slumped to a very underwhelming 1-1 draw with DR Congo. Portugal have the team to go far this year but with the likes of 2022 breakout star Goncalo Ramos on the bench, you wonder if the insistence to keep Ronaldo at the forefront is harming Roberto Martinez’s side. For now, they enter lower than they should in our power rankings.7. Brazil 🇧🇷 Brazil’s underwhelming performance has harmed their early ranking (Getty)Another favourite whose ranking has been harmed by a problematic opening performance, Brazil looked wooden against Morocco and could easily have suffered defeat if not for the brilliance of Vinicius Jr. Carlo Ancelotti’s men need to buck their ideas up, because after that display, they are showing signs of becoming this year’s high-profile early exit.8. Morocco 🇲🇦Morocco looked the better team against five-time winners Brazil (Reuters)Now to the “official” champions of Africa, whose ranking has been benefited giving the team above such trouble. Morocco are by no means an ultimate underdog of this tournament - the 2022 semi-finalists are ranked seventh in the world by Fifa - but by coming out much the better team against the Selecao, the record-winners chasing a sixth star, they have already stamped their mark in the finals.9. United States 🇺🇸The US eased past Paraguay in their opening match (Getty)U-S-A, U-S-A! The hosts are off to flyer and after a stellar opening performance against Paraguay, soccer fever is taking over. Folarin Balogun, a man whose American citizenship came by fluke, was at the heart of an outright domination of the South American side, his brace making up half of the US’ tally in a 4-1 win. Whether they can keep up this intensity against tougher opposition is yet to be seen - but after one very impressive game, non-football-watching Americans will actually be convincing themselves that the US can win the World Cup. So regardless of how misguided they may be, Mauricio Pochettino’s boys have earned their place in our early power rankings.10. Sweden 🇸🇪Sweden were firing on all cylinders in their World Cup opener (AP)Sweden weren’t expected to be at these finals when they slumped to a dismal last-placed finish in qualifying - in which Kosovo did the double over them. But after gobbling up their lifeline in the play-offs, one they got through the Nations League, the Swede’s are stateside - and going off their first match, they’re on fire. Alexander Isak and Victor Gyokeres both found their shooting boots for the opener, despite their respective struggles last term, which saw Sweden demolish Tunisia with such a verocity that the African side’s manager has now been sacked. Now brilliantly placed to progress, Graham Potter could be about to earn national hero status in Sweden. I wonder if Zara Larsson knows about the face-swap trend.Teams 11-4811. Netherlands12. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhere FSU's position groups rank in the ACC entering 2026Athlon Sports' preseason position rankings for the ACC offer a snapshot of where Florida State stands entering the 2026 season, with the Seminoles receiving mixed reviews across the roster. Florida State's complete Athlon Sports ACC position rankings were: quarterback (12th), running back (4th), wide receiver (3rd), offensive line (10th), defensive line (7th), linebacker (7th), and defensive back (8th).Among Florida State's seven position groups evaluated, the wide receivers earned the highest ranking, checking in at No. 3 in the conference. The Seminoles also received a strong evaluation at running back, where the unit was ranked fourth among ACC programs. The rankings suggest Athlon views Florida State's skill-position talent as one of the team's strengths heading into the fall. The Seminoles added several offensive playmakers through recruiting and the transfer portal while returning key contributors at both positions. On the other side of the ball, Athlon ranked Florida State's defensive line and linebacker units seventh in the ACC, while the defensive backs came in eighth. Those rankings place each group in the middle tier of the conference as the Seminoles work to improve a defense that underwent significant roster turnover during the offseason. The offensive line was ranked 10th, indicating continued questions surrounding one of Florida State's most scrutinized position groups. The Seminoles addressed the unit through both high school recruiting and the transfer portal, but national analysts appear to be taking a wait-and-see approach entering the season.Quarterback was the program's lowest-ranked position group, coming in at No. 12 in the ACC. Florida State is turning to transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels in 2026 after he arrived in Tallahassee from the Auburn Tigers. While Daniels brings significant experience to the position, Athlon's ranking suggests the conference remains deep at quarterback entering the season. With preseason camp still weeks away, the rankings provide an early national perspective on the Seminoles' roster makeup. Whether Florida State outperforms those projections will likely play a major role in determining where Mike Norvell's team finishes in the ACC standings this fall.Follow us @FSUWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida State news, notes, and opinions. This article originally appeared on FSU Wire: Athlon Sports releases ACC position unit rankings for the 2026 season0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSpartan Ventures 'all systems go' despite loss of MSU's AD, presidentEAST LANSING – J Batt is gone. Kevin Guskiewicz soon will follow.Their Spartan Ventures project, however, continues to move forward, approaching its July 1 start date that its head believes will boost revenue for Michigan State athletics.Jon Palumbo, who is the Spartan Ventures CEO and an executive deputy athletic director/chief operating officer, said on Monday, June 15, that the course remains the same for the new athletic department fundraising arm. And it is a mission he described as “extremely important” to continue, even with the loss of Batt as athletic director (to Kentucky) and the impending departure of Guskiewicz as president (to Clemson).“Spartan Ventures remains a critical piece of the future of Michigan State athletics. We’re all systems go, we’re pushing forward,” Palumbo said. “A lot of the work that I’ve been doing personally the last 10 months is towards the launch of Spartan Ventures. We’ve got great alignment. All the people who have been involved in helping us stand that up are 100% with it, and we’re going to keep that momentum going.”STUCK IN THE MUCK: With chaos at the top, Michigan State stuck in its own way againAbout an hour and a half after Batt was announced as the new athletic director at Kentucky, Palumbo took the dais inside Spartan Stadium’s club level to announce a new 10-year partnership with Michigan State University Federal Credit Union for a deal that will place MSUFCU branding and patches on Spartan uniforms and helmets, among other endorsements across all of its sports.Palumbo pointed to it as “a new revenue stream” to go along with being able to “maximize existing revenue streams.”April Clobes, the president and CEO of MSUFCU, on Monday said the deal “happened in less than two weeks.”“The comment that I made was this happened so quick and it was so professional and an extraordinary representation of what MSU is,” Clobes said.MSU's Board of Trustees approved the creation of the non-profit Spartan Ventures, along with its for-profit subsidiary Spartan Media Ventures, in October. It passed by a narrow 5-3 vote. However, in April, Trustee Mike Balow (R-Plymouth) voiced concern that the groups are not being transparent with the Board of Trustees and public about its operations, which includes non-disclosure agreements. Balow, Rema Vassar (D-Detroit) and Dennis Denno (D-East Lansing) were the opposition votes in October.“Alignment is important,” said Palumbo, who was hired by Batt from Georgia Tech last July as MSU’s executive deputy athletics director/chief operating officer and was appointed to head Spartan Ventures in March. “And so right now, it’s just trying to make sure that we’re aligned with everybody that’s here, with the VPs on campus that are still running their shops. Kevin is still here as we speak, so I’m making sure to we’re keeping a dialogue with him. And obviously the Board of Trustees, making sure we’re being transparent.”In May, Guskieiwicz announced he would be leaving to take the president position at Clemson after clashing with the three dissenting trustees over a revised code of ethics and conduct for the Board of Trustees. Denno eventually signed it, but both Vassar and Balow did not and were censured by the Board on Friday at their meeting in Benton Harbor. The State News, MSU’s student newspaper, reported last week that Vassar in mid-May gave MSU a 23-page, pre-litigation demand to university officials claiming she has been discriminated against during her tenure on the board. As of Wednesday evening, June 17, MSU had yet to announce either an interim president or an interim athletic director. All of that internal conflict led MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo to lash out at the Board of Trustees for losing Guskiewicz on the same day Batt left for Kentucky and the MSUFCU partnership was announced. Without mentioning his name, Izzo included a veiled dig at Balow, whose daughter, Sophia, was a member of the MSU swimming and diving team that former athletic director Bill Beekman disbanded in 2020. Part of Balow’s platform to winning an elected spot on the Board of Trustees in 2024 was to get MSU to reinstate the swimming and diving program.“He’s everything that is what I’ve always dreamed and hoped for for Michigan State – a blue-collar, regular guy that can do extraordinary things,” Izzo said of Guskiewicz. “So what else? I can’t name everything. I guess he didn’t reinstate the swimming program, I don’t know. I guess that’s something that’s maybe a bad thing he hasn’t done. Although he wasn’t here when it was [disbanded].”After the MSUFCU announcement on Monday, Palumbo – along with Jared Kozinn (president and chief commercial officer for Spartan Ventures) and Tim House (president of Spartan Athletic Foundation) – posted a co-signed letter to MSU’s athletic department website. It said work with Spartan Ventures continues with “a bold, innovative framework that brings private sector advantages, a revenue generation focused approach, and operational flexibility while maintaining alignment with the institution and a continued connection with the collegiate model.”“Great work has been done to get to this point, and the work will continue until we have provided our Spartan student-athletes with the resources they need to win championships,” the three wrote in the letter. “The foundation has been laid and the bricks are being stacked.“The future is bright for MSU. MSU Athletics success is an important part of that future. Spartan Ventures is a critical vehicle to achieve that success, and we are ‘all in’ to make it successful.”Asked if he felt there was anything in the coming two weeks that could stall the official July 1 launch date of Spartan Ventures, Palumbo said “I don’t worry about that.”“Our Board has been vocally very supportive of it,” Palumbo said Monday. “Obviously, things have developed over the weekend. But I believe that our Board is still very much a proponent of Spartan Ventures based on my conversations with them and what we’ve talked about. And as far as leadership, I’m the CEO of Spartan Ventures and I’m here, so I’m planning on continuing to do that job and move it forward. To answer the question, I don’t see any reason why it would stall.”Palumbo said continuing to reach out to sponsors and donors becomes an even bigger priority with the departure of Batt and Guskiewicz. And he said he is emphasizing to them that the vision of Spartan Ventures created over the past year “doesn’t change.”“I think it’s an honest dialogue, right? Any time there’s uncertainty in terms of future leadership, folks just want to hear what the plans are, right? And so I think we’re sharing what are plans are as they stand,” Palumbo said. “Could those change with new leadership? That’s always a possibility. But I think you just try to be as transparent with those folks [donors and sponsors] as you can and also understand that they may need a little time and space until some things develop.“But we’re doing our best to share exactly what I’ve shared with you guys – the vision doesn’t change. Michigan State athletics has been around a long time, it’s gonna continue to be here. And I believe we’ll continue to thrive, and that’s what we’re working to make sure happens.”Contact Chris Solari: csolari@freepress.com. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAge doesn't matter at this World Cup (except when trying to get to your hotel)Try as they might, Spain just couldn't find a way past Vozinha [Getty Images]This is my full column from the BBC Football Extra newsletter. If you're outside the UK and would like to sign up, head this way.I covered the Cape Verde v Spain game when a chap of a certain vintage became the talk of the town. The World Cup often throws up these heartwarming stories and the brilliant, unbeatable 40-year-old Vozinha stole the hearts of everyone watching. The fact that he certainly doesn't look young for his age, is that a polite way of putting it, made it even more poignant as did his tears of joy at the end.My trip down from Boston to New York hadn't been an easy one the previous day.The train journey itself was incredible, New England is a stunningly beautiful part of this planet. However, getting from Penn Station to the hotel in New Jersey was torture with a hefty suitcase. Here is a hint for travellers – taxi drivers will not take you to the other side of the Hudson unless you give them at least one arm and possibly a leg as a tip too.A broken down tube train and nearly two hours later, walking the final mile in sweltering heat, I was feeling my age just a little bit. I also felt the vast difference between those in TV who are whisked around in air-conditioned limos and those of us hacking it as radio and writing folk. But the performances of those older players gave me my zest back as did the fans sharing the journey with unshakeable positivity. It's not how old you are but how old you allow yourself to feel. And travelling football fans at World Cups make me feel like a teenager again. But be wary of pacy youngstersFrance showed us exuberance too this week – eventually. After a slow start, there was so much to admire about the French side in New York on Tuesday. The first half was dire to be fair, the pitch looked plastic, the players looked sluggish and I wondered whether or not Kylian Mbappe and co would be going down the same route as Spain. Then they woke up and sparkled making a decent Senegal side look like a bunch of old men.The genius of Michael Olise, when the shackles were removed and he was set free from the wing, changed the match completely. Suddenly, the rest of his team-mates seemed to get the memo, this is the World Cup!The pace from Bradley Barcola looked beyond human when he came on, but then Mbappe was on another level altogether because he can actually control the ball moving at those insane speeds. This is now infamously a World Cup liberally sprinkled with players over the age of 40, but as the tournament inexorably grinds on, I thought that maybe youthful genius will win in the end against the living legends on show.Well I thought that until 37-year-old Lionel Messi sauntered into the competition a few hours later and rolled back the years with an incredible performance. Then again he isn't really like other humans, so the rules don't apply to him.New York buying into World Cup excitementThe Met Life stadium was a spectacular sight pre-match in the France v Senegal fixture [Getty Images]Apart from the brilliance of the French, the much maligned MetLife Stadium was also an uplifting experience. Maybe not the best pitch or the most appealing external architecture I grant you, but the atmosphere in that bowl seating nearly 80,000 fans, sitting in near cliff face stands, is exceptional. I am slightly biased as Giants fan who has been on pilgrimage to see them play there. The real kicker was that when a number of the all-conquering Knicks players were shown the big screens watching on, the roar was incredible. Yes there were a lot of French fans and a good smattering of Senegalese, but the good people of New York had turned out in large numbers showing that they are beginning to buy in to the excitement of the World Cup.A delicate question...Back on the subject of the silver-haired fraternity, it was noticeable that many of the helpers at the games are septuagenarians or older. My first thought was you don't see that too often back in the UK, but then I thought, how nice they are giving jobs to these people to make sure they still feel valued in society. Then I mused, I wonder if they are just volunteers who aren't actually being paid but want to give something back to society, their city or even their club that is hosting the match.I mentioned this to a fellow media worker and he suggested another option. Maybe they have to do this manual work into old age because the public welfare and pensions systems in the US aren't as generous as most of Europe. Normally, I would ask the workers to find out, but if I am honest it is a trifle delicate to bring up with a stranger, even if he is saying 'how can I help you and have a nice day.' I will find a subtle way of asking and get back to you. I do hope it is not the case that this is no country for old men.Can Scots bridge sizeable gap?[Getty Images]I can't put it off any longer, I have to look forward to Scotland's crucial tie against Morocco. First of all the Afcon champions, well maybe champions – the courts will decide – are a better side than Scotland. Actually much better according to the Fifa rankings, 43rd v eighth is one mighty gap.The thing is, Scotland 'only' need a draw from either this or the following game against Brazil. Stevie Clarke has a few positive things to consider. His charges will play better than they did against Haiti, that was one of their least impressive team performances under his management even if they defended well and got the result. There are also a bunch of options open to him, specifically systems that have served the side well when they needed to shut up shop. These players have learned how to do this pretty well. There have been numerous examples of them being dominated by higher ranking opponents only to break away and skewer them. Norway in Oslo was one example, with two late counter punch goals after Erling Haaland had gone off thinking he had won his country the game. There was also the now historic qualifying match against Denmark that qualified Scotland for this World Cup. Three all-time great goals will be forever remembered, the fact that Denmark were the better side for the majority of the game can be lost in the mists of time.Remember Spain are second in the rankings and Cape Verde are more than 60 places below them. It is not impossible for Scotland to get a draw too, it's just pretty unlikely.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'We're buzzing' - Gvardiol 'one of the best young defenders in the world'BBC Radio Manchester has been talking to fans to get their reaction to Josko Gvardiol signing a new deal which will keep him at Manchester City until 2031.Kieran from Dukinfield is delighted by the news, describing it as "massive"."I was gutted by rumours of him going. He's been superb for City and doesn't always get the credit he deserves," he added."He's one of the best young defenders in world football. He can play left-back and centre-back, he's quick, strong and powerful, and he scores goal. That's why the biggest teams in Europe wanted him."Of course, money will talk and City won't be offering him pennies, but it's refreshing to see him stay at City instead of going to a team like Real Madrid or Barcelona, especially after Pep Guardiola left."We're buzzing to have him at City. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'The Red Baron' - who is Munoz?[Getty Images]Victor Munoz has enjoyed a meteoric rise.He spent the vast majority of last season playing in the Spanish third tier for Real Madrid's B-side. While he made six substitute appearances for the first team, including four at last summer's Club World Cup, he was offloaded last summer for 6m euros (£5.2m).But he has quickly impressed with his direct style of play at Osasuna, where the media have dubbed him 'The Red Baron' on account of his ginger hair and dashing style. He completed 75 dribbles in La Liga in his debut season - a figure bettered only by Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Lamine Yamal.Spain manager Luis de la Fuente says Munoz has "fantastic energy" and "lets us change the rhythm of a match".He marked his national team debut by scoring nine minutes after coming on versus Serbia in March. The 5ft 7in tall player has registered seven goals and five assists for Osasuna. The club reportedly rejected a €25m (£21.7m) bid from Sunderland for the winger in January, insisting the Black Cats pay his €40m (£34.7m) release clause. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIvory Coast striker Wahi barred from World Cup match in Canada amid match-fixing probeIvory Coast striker Elye Wahi, who is being investigated into suspected match-fixing, has not been authorized to travel to Canada for his team's next World Cup match against Germany, the Ivorian soccer federation said on Thursday.Ivory Coast faces Germany on Saturday in Toronto. The federation said Wahi will not be able to travel with the squad because “the necessary administrative authorizations for his entry into Canadian territory could not be obtained at this stage.”Wahi started in attack for Ivory Coast when it beat Ecuador 1-0 in its opening game in Philadelphia on Monday. He will remain in the United States pending the team’s return, the federation said. The French soccer league said on Wednesday that an “unusual amount of bets” were placed internationally on Wahi receiving a yellow card during a Ligue 1 game with Nice in May.The French league was alerted by partners monitoring betting markets about suspicious betting activity at international level concerning Nice’s home game against Metz on May 17, which ended 0-0, and in which Wahi was shown a yellow card. The French league said it passed this information to relevant police and gambling authorities, as well as the French Football Federation.Asked whether Wahi was questioned by police, the Marseille prosecutor's office told the Associated Press that “a 23-year-old professional football player, competing in France’s Ligue 1 championship, was arrested on May 29, 2026, as part of their investigation."The office added “the investigation concerns alleged offenses of organized fraud, organized sports corruption, receiving stolen goods, and money laundering.” The player was questioned while in police custody and was released without being detained. The office added the investigation was ongoing.Wahi’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF) said it has not been officially notified “of any judicial or administrative proceedings” concerning Wahi.“During this particularly delicate period, the FIF offers its full support to the player and reaffirms its confidence in him,” it said. “Elye Wahi remains an important member of the Ivory Coast national team.”May 17 was the last round of the Ligue 1 season. Less than two weeks later, Wahi helped struggling Nice stay in Ligue 1 when he scored twice in a 4-1 win over Saint-Etienne in the second leg of their promotion-relegation playoff. The 23-year-old Wahi had joined Nice on loan from German club Eintracht Frankfurt in January and scored nine goals in 18 games overall, helping Nice reach the French Cup final.___AP World Cup: https://apnews.com/fifa-world-cup0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFirst-round play suspended at 126th U.S. Open because of heavy fogSOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – The USGA expected heavy wind and possible storms Thursday at the 126th U.S. Open. But it was something else that caused a stoppage of play early in the opening round: Fog.Officials suspended play at 7:05 a.m. ET after fog blanked Shinnecock. When the horn sounded, only 12 players had completed a hole.Players were being held in place for 15 minutes in hopes of the visibility improving.Even before the stoppage, it figured to be a long and chaotic day at the national championship, with officials bracing for possible storms and wind gusts approaching 40 mph.The setup staff, concerned about the course becoming unplayable, had already slowed down the green speeds and modified hole locations.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNSL Week 8 Recap: Ottawa Rapid takes the throne as more drama unfoldsNSL Week 8 Recap: Ottawa Rapid takes the throne as more drama unfoldsThe Northern Super League (NSL) returned from a week-long break with another string of unpredictable results, with Ottawa Rapid FC taking the lead in the table. For weeks, the Montréal Roses looked untouchable. They sat at the top of the standings and seemed destined to extend their lead. Instead, the door for Ottawa opened and they were forced to settle for a late draw in Toronto.Of course, DB Pridham wasn’t going to let that opportunity go to waste.A commanding 3-1 victory over Vancouver Rise FC had ended their impressive winning streak. Unfortunately, it also sent the Rapid to the top of the table for the first time this season. Here’s the stinger: Ottawa is a genuine title contender.Elsewhere, Halifax Tides FC secured three points and a second clean sheet this season. They maintained their upward trajectory with a controlled victory over Calgary Wild FC.Three matches, eight goals, a dramatic equalizer, and a new league leader. Week 8 had everything.Halifax Tides FC 2-0 Calgary Wild FCSaturday, June 13 | Wanderers Grounds, HalifaxCalgary were set to be the ones to watch. Meanwhile, Halifax’s purposeful start paid off with an early breakthrough. A cleverly worked short corner found Julia Benati, who whipped her effort into the back of the net to put the Tides ahead.Calgary responded well and created chances through Kahli Johnson and Jorian Baucom, but Rylee Foster-Inman was equal to everything the visitors threw at her.Unfortunately for them, Halifax struck again just before halftime.Saorla Miller cut onto her right foot and calmly tucked home the Tides’ second, sending the home side into the break with a comfortable two-goal cushion. The Wild pushed hard after halftime and looked the more dangerous side for stretches. Goalkeeper Katelin Talbert made several key stops to keep the deficit at two, but Calgary could not find a breakthrough. In the end, the Tides managed to close out a convincing 2-0 victory.AFC Toronto 1-1 Montréal Roses FCSaturday, June 13 | York Lions Stadium, TorontoThis one felt destined to end in heartbreak for somebody. The first half was a tense and evenly matched game. AFC Toronto came closest to breaking the deadlock, first through a Kaylee Hunter free kick that crashed off the post and then a Nikayla Small effort that rattled the crossbar.Montréal had opportunities of their own, particularly from set pieces, but Sofia Manner kept the Roses at bay.The breakthrough finally arrived just after the hour mark, though not before more drama. A Montréal defender conceded a penalty after a handball inside the area. Hunter stepped up but sent her effort wide, keeping the game scoreless. The missed opportunity did not deter the hosts. A flowing move involving debutant Jordan Brewster and Hunter ended with Lauren Rowe curling a stunning finish into the top corner to give Toronto a deserved lead. With time ticking away, it looked as though AFC Toronto had done enough. Then came Lisa Pechersky. Deep into stoppage time, the wing-back drove into the box and bent a brilliant effort beyond Manner to rescue a point for Montréal and silence York Lions Stadium.Toronto squandered their two points, while Montréal salvaged one to extend their unbeaten run, though the following result knocked the club off the top of the table.Vancouver Rise FC 1-3 Ottawa Rapid FCSunday, June 14 | Swangard Stadium, BurnabyThe biggest match of the weekend arguably delivered the biggest statement.Vancouver entered the contest riding a wave of momentum and looking every bit like the title contenders they were last year. Ottawa soon foiled their plans. After an entertaining opening half with multiple efforts from De Filippo drifting wide, Min-a Lee broke the deadlock with a spectacular strike from outside the area that flew into the corner.Vancouver responded exactly as league leaders do. Jessica De Filippo kept battling and eventually found the equalizer just before halftime, ensuring the sides went into the break level. The second half belonged entirely to Ottawa, however. Less than five minutes after the restart, DB Pridham restored the visitors’ lead with a powerful finish. The decisive moment came shortly afterward when Vancouver’s Kennedy Faulknor brought down an Ottawa attacker in the box, conceding a penalty and earning a red card. Pridham then stepped up and calmly converted for her second goal of the afternoon.Another standout campaign has reinforced Pridham’s status as one of the NSL’s most compelling talents, though players outside Europe’s traditional power centres often remain on the periphery of awards conversations like the Ballon d’Or.Down to 10 players and trailing by two, Vancouver never truly recovered. Ottawa defended resolutely, saw out the match, and celebrated a victory that felt bigger than three points.By the end of the weekend, the standings had a new look. Ottawa Rapid FC stands alone at the summit of the Northern Super League, having dethroned Montréal and injected fresh intrigue into the title race.Related articles from Her Football Hub:A language of survival: The perseverance and heart of the Ukraine women’s national teamChicago Stars sign Leila Ouahabi following Man City departureEarth FC: The environmental campaign ‘defending where football lives’0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow are Arsenal’s World Cup internationals doing after opening group games? How are Arsenal’s World Cup internationals doing after opening group games? With the first round of World Cup group games now concluded, let’s have a look at how Arsenal’s internationals are getting on so far.Photo by Mattia Ozbot/Getty ImagesWednesday night brought to an end the first round of World Cup group games, with Colombia and Uzbekistan the final two teams to play at the tournament.Arsenal had 16 players called up for the World Cup, though Jurrien Timber subsequently withdrew due to injury. Of the remaining 15, 11 have been in action so far, with the other four still waiting for their first appearance.Let’s have a look at how the players are getting on, and how likely their countries are to make the knockout stages. As a reminder, the top two teams from each group will qualify, but eight third-place finishers will also progress, so three points might be enough depending on your goal difference, and four points almost certainly will be.Photo by Al Bello/Getty ImagesGroup C – BrazilGabriel Magalhaes played 90 minutes and Gabriel Martinelli was an unused substitute as Brazil drew 1-1 with Morocco. Brazil certainly have more work to do in their remaining games, but a win over either Scotland or Haiti would likely see them through to the knockouts.Group E – Germany and EcuadorKai Havertz starred for Germany against Curacao, scoring a brace and winning the Player of the Match award. Germany’s 7-1 win will likely see them through to the knockouts on its own.Unfortunately, Piero Hincapie and Ecuador suffered a last-minute defeat to the Ivory Coast, so they have it all to do in their remaining games against Curacao and Germany. Given Germany’s early form, Ecuador’s next match against Curacao could be make or break.Group F – SwedenViktor Gyokeres provided a goal and assist in Sweden’s 5-1 win over Tunisia, which was vital, as their next two games are against tough opponents in the Netherlands and Japan. The other match finished in a 2-2 draw, so if Sweden were feeling ambitious, they might start thinking about trying to win the group. They’re certainly in a good spot to progress.Photo by David Ramos/Getty ImagesGroup G – BelgiumLeandro Trossard played 90 minutes for Belgium against Egypt, but they could only manage a 1-1 draw. The good news is that the other match between New Zealand and Iran also ended in a draw, so it’s still all to play for in Group G.Group H – SpainArsenal’s internationals will be disappointed with their opening game against Cape Verde, as none of them started, only Mikel Merino came on, and the match finished 0-0.Martin Zubimendi and David Raya will have to wait for their first appearances, and Spain will need to improve against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Again, the good news is that the other game ended in a draw, so all four teams sit on one point after one game.Group I – France and NorwayWilliam Saliba played 90 minutes in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal, whilst Martin Odegaard played 81 minutes and provided an assist in Norway’s 4-1 win over Iraq. Both are in a strong position to progress, and they’ll hope to wrap that up in their next game, before facing each other on the final day.Group L – EnglandDeclan Rice and Bukayo Saka both provided assists and Noni Madueke won a penalty as England won their opening game against Croatia 4-2. Ghana beat Panama in the other game, and the two winning teams will face off against each other in the next match next Tuesday. That means a win in the next game could potentially qualify England for the knockouts and also win the group, depending on the other result. At the very least, it would put England on the verge of both achievements.Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty Images0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPSG leading race for teenage sensation shining at the World Cup and wanted by Real Madrid – reportPSG leading race for teenage sensation shining at the World Cup and wanted by Real Madrid – reportReal Madrid’s search for midfield reinforcements is extending far beyond the biggest names in the market, but one of their most exciting targets may already be edging towards a different destination. While much of the attention has focused on the club’s pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, Real Madrid’s recruitment team continues to monitor several emerging talents across Europe. Among them is Lille sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi, a player regarded as one of the brightest young midfielders in world football. However, the race for the Moroccan prodigy is becoming increasingly complicated.According to Rodra (h/t Madrid Zone), Paris Saint-Germain currently hold a significant advantage in the battle to sign Bouaddi, potentially creating a major obstacle for Real Madrid’s transfer plans.Real Madrid view Bouaddi as a serious midfield optionBouaddi is on Real Madrid’s radar. (Photo by Vincent Carchietta/Getty Images)Bouaddi’s rise has been impossible to ignore over the past year. The Lille midfielder has developed into one of Ligue 1’s most promising young players and recently enhanced his reputation even further with an eye-catching display for Morocco against Brazil at the FIFA World Cup.At just 18 years old, he has already attracted comparisons with some of the game’s most respected midfielders. Names such as Patrick Vieira, Sergio Busquets and N’Golo Kante have all been mentioned when discussing elements of his playing style, showing the unique blend of defensive intelligence, athleticism and technical quality he brings to the pitch.Real Madrid have been tracking his progress lately and see him as a potential addition capable of strengthening the club’s midfield for both the present and the future.Importantly, the teenager is also viewed as a credible alternative should negotiations for Fernandez fail to progress as hoped.PSG hold an important advantageDespite Real Madrid’s interest, the Spanish giants are far from alone in their admiration.PSG are leading the race for Bouaddi. (Photo by Vincent Carchietta/Getty Images)Paris Saint-Germain have been following Bouaddi for some time and are believed to be in a strong position thanks to their familiarity with the French market and their ability to offer a clear pathway within Ligue 1.For a player who has already established himself at Lille, remaining in France could prove an attractive option, especially with PSG continuing to build a squad around young elite talent. That local advantage is one reason why the French champions are currently considered favourites in the race.Despite the competition for the young midfielder, completing a deal will not be easy because he remains under contract with Lille until 2029, placing the French club in a strong negotiating position. Combined with his recent World Cup displays and growing interest from PSG, any transfer fee is likely to increase significantly in the coming months. That reality explains why Real Madrid are still evaluating all available options rather than blindly following targets.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNI and Republic of Ireland learn World Cup routeNorthern Ireland face a difficult 2027 Women's World Cup play-off with Portugal, while the Republic of Ireland will take on Kazakhstan. Michael McArdle's side will be underdogs against Portugal, who beat NI twice in Euro 2025 qualifying. If they can win that game, then either Iceland or Croatia await in the second round of play-offs.Given their world ranking, even if Northern Ireland could stun two of Europe's biggest sides they could still face an additional inter-continental play-off to make it to the finals. The Republic of Ireland, who qualified for a first World Cup in 2023, will face a first round tie with Kazakhstan. If Carla Ward's side win their first round, then they will face either Belgium or Poland in a bid to reach the finals. The first round ties will take place in October, while the second play-off round are scheduled for the international window in November and December.Women's World Cup: England draw Greece in round one of World Cup play-offsDifficult tie for Republic of IrelandThe Republic of Ireland made history by qualifying for the World Cup in 2023 and will be hopeful of qualifying for back-to-back tournaments. Ward's side had a strong qualifying campaign and narrowly missed out on automatic qualification after losing in France in their final game. While they have to travel a long way for their play-off with Kazakhstan, it is a tie the Republic will be favourites to win, especially with a home second leg. If they can navigate the first round, then a difficult second round tie with either Poland or Belgium awaits. Despite being the lower seeded team, Belgium will be more dangerous opponents for Ward's side. Last year, Abbie Larkin scored a last-minute goal in Belgium to earn promotion to League A on agrregate, which was the springboard for their qualifying campaign. The Republic of Ireland twice defeated Poland in World Cup qualifying - a 3-2 win in Gdansk before a 1-0 victory in Dublin - so will be optimistic should they meet again in the second play-off round. It's a difficult route to Brazil for the Republic of Ireland, but it is certainly achievable. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBittersweet World Cup for Gaza's football fansPalestinian football fans gathered to watch the World Cup Group on a giant screen (Eyad Baba)In the darkness of a market in the central Gaza Strip, where power outages are a part of daily life, a brightly lit screen showing a World Cup match holds everyone's gaze.Dozens of men and boys stood transfixed as they watched Belgium play Egypt -- a much-anticipated fixture for Palestinian football fans eager to witness the prowess of their idol, Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah. The 1-1 draw in Monday's match didn't dampen their spirits, with some fans climbing onto their friends' shoulders and waving huge Egyptian flags.Smiles spread across the crowd gathered among the ruins of the Nuseirat neighourbood which, like the rest of the Gaza Strip, was devastated during the two-year war between Israel and Hamas."The World Cup is not a trivial event for Gazans," said Mustafa Siam, a member of the Palestinian Football Association (PFA), whose president was denied visas for the United States and Canada."Palestinian football fans will try to follow the matches and forget their worries and pain," he told AFP, wearing a tracksuit top in red, the colour of the Palestinian national team.Owners of the small makeshift cafes that have sprung up across the Palestinian territory are doing their best to try to recreate the atmosphere of previous major tournaments. And they are attracting an audience, despite the dire situation facing Gaza's population. In Al-Zawayda, in the central Gaza Strip, a tent in a camp for displaced people shows a match on a small television screen.Fans sit on plastic chairs arranged on the sandy floor, their chatter mingling with the hum of a worn-out generator. "We try, as much as possible, to experience the World Cup -- loved by both young and old," said one customer, Eid Al-Attar."Will I ever get the chance to attend an opening match or any World Cup match inside the stadium?" he wondered."Of course, it's a dream for every football fan, but here in Gaza, that's forbidden for us because we are occupied and besieged," he told AFP.Israel strictly controls all entry and exit points into Gaza, where a ceasefire came into effect in October. A small number of people are able to leave in special cases, particularly for medical treatment.- 'We were happy' -In Gaza City, 27-year-old Mazen al-Ghoul watched the World Cup opening ceremony with a feeling of "oppression"."The world is living and enjoying life, while we don't even have homes, schools or electricity to watch the matches," he said.Several people who spoke to AFP recalled the previous World Cup, held in Qatar in 2022, when screens had been set up at Palestine Stadium and Yarmouk Stadium in Gaza City. Then, thousands of football fans had massed to watch the evening matches. Now, several small seafront cafes are showing the games, but generators frequently cut out. Spectators are left exasperated while staff work to patch up the old machines, connected by fraying electrical wires.Other restaurants and local venues where people used to watch the football were destroyed during the war.Marwan al-Sheikh, 30, who now lives in a tent, remembered watching the previous World Cup with friends in Gaza's trendy cafes. "We were happy," he said."I no longer feel that enthusiasm. I watch the matches in a cafe set up in a tent. Today, we are miserable, our view of the world has changed -- not just when it comes to football."- 'Escape' -On a beach in Khan Yunis, in the south of the Palestinian territory, another high-stakes football showcase was being played out far from the global spotlight.Young men, some barefoot, dart around in the sand under the guidance of a volunteer coach improvising drills amid the shouts."Football is the only escape in life," said Mohammad Abu Tah, one of the coaches of a hastily-formed team inspired by the World Cup."Our own 'World Cup' starts on land that is destroyed, devastated, full of hardship and wounds," added his colleague Jaber al-Basheeti, mentioning amputee players, destroyed facilities and numerous shortages of equipment. And while there were no stands, there was no shortage of spectators, with fans perched on broken blocks of concrete arranged around the makeshift pitch. str-az/crb/mj/acc/smw/dc0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMManchester United have an interest in Como midfielder Martin BaturinaManchester United have an interest in Como midfielder Martin BaturinaManchester United are among several Premier League clubs interested in Como midfielder Martin Baturina. The 23-year-old has seen his stock soar after an impressive debut 2025/26 season in Italy after leaving his native Croatia for the first time. He notched eight goals and four assists in 34 games to help his side secure Champions League football—firmly putting him on the Old Trafford radar as United themselves prepare to return to Europe’s premier club competition after a two-year absence.Alongside Manchester United, Aston Villa are also in the race for Baturina. The Premier League duo face competition from continental giants Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga champions actively inquiring about his availability. Leeds United also previously failed in their attempt to sign him during a past transfer window.Any deal for Baturina will require navigating a strong financial stance from his current club, as the ambitious Como hierarchy have already turned down an official €50 million opening offer for the midfielder with ‘immense quality’. Under the guidance of manager Cesc Fabregas, Baturina has become a centrepiece of the Serie A club’s setup, and Como have no intention of allowing their prized asset to leave without demanding a premium fee.Even in defeat, Baturina enjoyed a dream World Cup, scoring a stunning goal against England and proving to be a constant thorn in the Three Lions’ flesh, and this has only increased his global profile and market value. While Como remain determined to stand their ground, the financial muscle of the Premier League’s heavyweights could test their resolve.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid will no longer have buy-back option for Liverpool-bound former academy star – RomanoReal Madrid will no longer have buy-back option for Liverpool-bound former academy star – RomanoReal Madrid’s involvement in Victor Munoz’s move to Liverpool has become one of the more intriguing subplots of the summer transfer window, particularly following conflicting reports regarding the club’s future rights over the player. The Spanish winger is set to complete a high-profile transfer to Anfield after Liverpool moved to beat Newcastle United in the race for his signature. With the Premier League giants triggering his €40 million release clause and reaching an agreement with Osasuna, the deal is now entering its final stages. However, questions have continued to circulate regarding what level of control Real Madrid still hold over the player’s future.According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, it appears that some of the information being reported is inaccurate. What’s the story?Following reports suggesting that Real Madrid retained a buy-back clause as part of Munoz’s transfer to the Premier League, Romano has now provided a very different explanation.Victor Munoz will play for Liverpool. (Photo by Florencia Tan Jun/Getty Images)The journalist states that Los Blancos do not possess any buy-back option that would allow them to automatically bring the player back in the future.Instead, Real Madrid’s protection comes through a right of first refusal mechanism. This means that if Liverpool decide to sell Munoz in the future and another club submits an acceptable offer, Real Madrid would have the opportunity to match those terms before a transfer is completed.Even then, however, the final decision would remain with the player. In practical terms, Real Madrid have maintained a degree of influence over Munoz’s future without retaining the direct control that a traditional buy-back clause would provide.Liverpool move delivers major financial boostWhile Real Madrid may no longer have a route to automatically re-sign the winger, the club has still benefited significantly from the transfer.Real Madrid will lose their buy-back options for Victor Munoz. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)Having retained 50% of the player’s economic rights when he left the club for Osasuna, Real Madrid are entitled to receive half of the €40 million transfer fee being paid by Liverpool. That translates into a substantial €20 million boost for the Spanish giants without having to negotiate directly with either Liverpool or Osasuna. The new arrangement could still prove valuableAlthough the absence of a buy-back clause may disappoint some, the agreement still leaves Real Madrid in a favourable position.A right of first refusal is not as powerful as a buy-back option, but it ensures Real Madrid remain connected to the player’s future development. If Munoz explodes into a star at Liverpool and eventually becomes available on the market again, the Spanish club will have an opportunity to enter the conversation before other interested teams complete a deal.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup’s Biggest Social Media Winners Aren’t Always SuperstarsATLANTA, GEORGIA - JUNE 15: Vozinha #1 of Cabo Verde applaud fans after the 0-0 draw during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match between Spain and Cabo Verde at Atlanta Stadium on June 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)Getty ImagesBefore-and-after versions of social media follower counts often dominate discussion during the FIFA World Cup. The tournament's greatest branding opportunity is not necessarily for players who already command massive global audiences. Instead, the World Cup can be transformative for lesser-known players who suddenly find themselves on the biggest stage in sport. In today’s digital age, success on the field can dramatically accelerate a player’s personal brand. The World Cup offers a unique environment where relatively unknown players can increase their visibility very quickly, attracting new fans and establishing international recognition almost overnight. The scale of the tournament is unmatched. Players who may be known only within their domestic leagues suddenly perform in front of audiences numbering in the hundreds of millions. A standout performance, a crucial goal or a memorable save can introduce a player to fans across every continent. Social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube then allow fans to continue following that player's journey long after the tournament ends. While stars such as Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi generate lots of attention, they already possess global brands and follower counts that stretch into the tens or hundreds of millions. Their World Cup performances may reinforce their status, but the tournament’s biggest social media winners are often players who begin the competition with little international recognition.Take Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha. He’s a perfect example of this overnight social media fame. His outstanding display in Cape Verde’s 0-0 draw against Spain captured global attention and introduced him to millions who may never have seen him play before. Highlight clips and reaction videos fueled his social media presence. Less than 24 hours after the game, Vozinha already had some 10 million Instagram followers — more than NBA superstar Victor Wembanyama (6.2 million) and NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes (6.4 million). The same also applies to players from other smaller soccer nations. New Zealand’s Tim Payne, for example, may not command the same international spotlight as Europe and South America’s elite stars, but that doesn’t mean he can’t get noticed by influencers. When an Argentine commentator called Payne the “least known player” at this World Cup, millions of soccer fans acted as if it were a personal insult and took to social media. In recent weeks, Payne has seen his Instagram following grow from less than 5,000 to more than five million after social media personality “El Scarso” had called him the tournament’s least-known player in late May. For many fans, the World Cup is about discovery. Every tournament introduces audiences to new players, new teams and unexpected heroes. A defender who shuts down a world-class attack, a goalkeeper who delivers a remarkable performance or a midfielder who drives an underdog run can become a global talking point within just days.SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 09: (EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE) (EDITOR'S NOTE: This image has been digitally altered.) Tim Payne #2 of New Zealand poses for a portrait during the official FIFA World Cup 2026 portrait session on June 09, 2026 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Harry How - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)FIFA via Getty ImagesMoments like these often have an immediate impact on social media growth. Fans search for player profiles, follow accounts and engage with content as they learn more about emerging stars. Social media growth is not driven solely by performances on the field. Fans increasingly seek authentic content that provides insight into players’ experiences during the tournament. Training-ground footage, team celebrations, travel diaries and behind-the-scenes moments build deeper connections between players and fans. For lesser-known players, these interactions can be especially valuable in converting casual viewers into long-term followers. Brands also recognize the opportunity. A player who captures the imagination of fans during the World Cup can quickly become an attractive partner for sponsors and advertisers. Companies often look for players with engaged audiences and compelling stories, particularly those representing emerging soccer markets. The World Cup’s global reach makes it uniquely powerful. Domestic leagues can attract big audiences, but the World Cup commands greater worldwide attention during a shorter span of time. For players from smaller nations, one memorable game can create opportunities that extend far beyond the tournament itself. Whether it is Vozinha frustrating one of the tournament’s top teams or a player like Payne getting attention, digital influence is increasingly important. The players who stand to gain the most from this World Cup over the next few weeks are often not the superstars everyone already knows, but the lesser-known ones. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM‘This is why I came to New York’ – Jalen Brunson sends heartfelt LinkedIn message to Knicks fansPhoto by Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesJalen Brunson’s message after winning the NBA title with the Knicks sounded less like a victory speech and more like a letter of gratitude to the city that changed his career. He did not just thank the fans. He spoke directly to them, acknowledging their belief in him long before the rest of the league fully caught on.Four years later, that belief ended with a banner.Jalen Brunson sends heartfelt Knicks LinkedIn messageIn a post shared on his LinkedIn, Brunson addressed Knicks fans after leading New York to its first NBA championship since 1973.“Winning an NBA Championship with the New York Knicks is everything I ever dreamed of. The fans, the city, this organization… This is why I came to New York. I’m so proud of this team. No matter the situation, we never stopped believing in each other or lost sight of our goal.”He added another line that felt made for a fanbase that waited 53 years.“Thank you, New York. I am forever grateful. And always remember…The Magic is in the Work.”The rest of Brunson’s post continued in the same tone. He spoke about belief, preparation, and giving back through his Second Round Foundation, which supports under-resourced and underrepresented young people.Jalen Brunson’s free agency gamble became Knicks historyPhoto by Elsa/Getty ImagesBrunson’s 2022 move from Dallas to New York is now seen as one of the most significant decisions of the modern NBA era. What was once criticized as an overpay is now a settled argument after Charles Barkley called Brunson the greatest free-agent signing in league history and Shaquille O’Neal admitted he was wrong. The numbers tell the story. Brunson averaged 24.0 points in his first year with the Knicks and led them to the second round in 2023. The following season, he jumped to 28.7 points per game, became an All-Star, and carried an injury-hit team through another seven-game playoff series.New York kept building around him, and Brunson kept proving them right. He remained the offensive engine through another strong season, then entered 2025-26 with the credibility of a franchise player and the responsibility of turning promise into a title. In the Finals against San Antonio, he put up 32.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game, capped off by a 45-point performance in the title-clinching Game 5. Brunson was named Finals MVP, completing a journey from a doubted signing to a Knicks legend. That is why his message resonated. Brunson did not just come to New York for a contract. One of the bigger issues that the club faced was some inconsistency from their man in between the sticks, Robert Sanchez, who wrapped up the campaign with nine clean sheets, but having allowed 49 goals to slip past him, the most in his time at Stamford Bridge. While it's clearly not all on Sanchez, this hasn't stopped the Chelsea executives from surveying their options elsewhere in an attempt to improve their shot-stopping ability, which has led them towards looking at Diogo Costa. The Blues are keeping tabs on Costa🚨#Chelsea Chelsea are closely monitoring Diogo Costa, the FC Porto goalkeeper.🔥 The Blues are considering a bid of around €60M. 👀 Porto may demand a higher fee if Costa impresses with Portugal at the World Cup.⚽ Manager Xabi Alonso is seeking a reliable option after… https://t.co/joiQtyTaa4pic.twitter.com/XCGNlrZ1B4— Ekrem KONUR (@Ekremkonur) June 18, 2026As reported by Ekrem Konur, the Blues are believed to be looking at Costa, who is currently employed at FC Porto, as well as being a member of Portugal's National Team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Portuguese shotstopper is coming off quite the impressive campaign, having been crowned Primeira Liga champions for the third time in his career, having played a huge role in their title-winning run, posting 21 clean sheets, allowing an astonishing 15 goals in the net through his 33 appearances. While it won't be beneficial to them now, given that the Blues won't be playing any European football in the coming year, Costa has plenty of experience in several of the European competitions, having played all eight seasons of his career split between time in the Champions League and the Europa League. It's not known at this time what the Primeira Liga champions value their star goalkeeper at, but according to Konur, the English side isn't afraid to shell out a bid of €60M to get talks started, with that fee potentially having to go higher depending on how the Portuguese keeper does in North America for the World Cup.In Portugal's opening match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which resulted in a shocking draw, Costa allowed one shot through at the half, while making another save later on in the game. A Seleção das Quinas' next match will come on Tuesday, June 23, when they are set to take on Uzbekistan, who will look to bounce back from a tough opening match against Colombia on Wednesday night.MORE TRANSFER NEWSAston Villa among six Premier League teams eyeing Barcelona wingerArsenal, Manchester United among teams eyeing Brazilian wonderkidArsenal, Liverpool among teams interested in Moroccan wonderkidLiverpool, Manchester United tied to relegated West Ham starFormer Champions League winning striker's move to MLS on the cardsLiverpool, Bayern Munich lose race to sign German wonderkidBayern Munich's €65m transfer target has stellar World Cup debut0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBraves' Walt Weiss gives brutal Ronald Acuna Jr. injury timeline update amid ongoing strugglesBraves' Walt Weiss gives brutal Ronald Acuna Jr. injury timeline update amid ongoing struggles originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Atlanta Braves are struggling mightily right now, and there seems to be little momentum toward turning things around. Injuries are beginning to pile up for Atlanta, and this time, there are no easy answers.Ronald Acuña Jr. has already dealt with multiple injuries this season. The former MVP initially suffered a hamstring injury in Colorado.“Sunday morning brought bad news to the Braves, but it could have been worse. The team placed Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-day injured list after he strained his left hamstring in Saturday’s 9-1 win over the Rockies at Coors Field. Acuña got an MRI late Saturday night, and the Braves made the decision early Sunday,” MLB.com’s Owen Perkins wrote. Then, just last week, Acuña suffered another setback. This time, he re-injured his hamstring, leading to another stint on the injured list.“Less than 24 hours after Ronald Acuña Jr. expressed optimism that his latest injury scare wasn't serious, the Braves were forced to make a move they had hoped to avoid. Atlanta placed Acuña on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain prior to the Braves' 2-1 loss on Wednesday,” MLB.com’s Zach Sweet wrote. It is devastating that Acuña has suffered these injuries, especially after initially believing the latest issue was not serious. Braves manager Walt Weiss recently provided an update on Acuña, and the outlook is not encouraging.“Weiss said Acuña is a “long way” from returning. Because the hamstring strain is in the same spot, the Braves will be more cautious than they were when Acuña missed nearly three weeks with the previous strain,” Braves reporter Mark Bowman posted. With Atlanta taking a cautious approach, it appears Acuña is likely still several weeks away from returning. It feels especially unfortunate given everything he has dealt with over the past couple of seasons. He was just beginning to find his rhythm in 2026 before the second injury interrupted his momentum. While it is the right decision for Atlanta to be cautious, given the team’s struggles, the timing makes this a particularly difficult update.More MLB news:Dodgers' Dave Roberts sounds the alarm on Shohei Ohtani's knee injury after latest updateBraves named best fit for $32M 2x Cy Young winner as rotation falters amid Spencer Strider injuryYankees predicted to trade for Giants' $151M 5-time Gold Glover to replace struggling Ryan McMahonPhillies predicted to trade for $426M 9-time Silver Slugger, 3x MVP in dream blockbuster deal0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRefusal by players to wear Pride Night jerseys leads to Revs' forfeitA refusal by several players to wear a special Pride Night jersey led to the York Revolution deciding to forfeit an Atlantic League baseball game against Southern Maryland scheduled for Thursday, June 18. As a result, the club said, and out of respect for the Pride Community and the York community, that Pride Night will continue as the feature element of the evening at WellSpan Park, even without a game. “To be clear; this action by the players is completely inconsistent with our vision as the Most Welcoming Place in York,” the team stated. “As a small token of our regret for the last-minute change of plans and support for our LGBTQIA+ representing partners we are making a $10,000 donation to the Rainbow Rose Center to support and further their work in making sure the York community is as inclusive as we strive to make WellSpan Park in York, Pennsylvania.” Please consider subscribing to support local journalism. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEngland have a new exciting way under Thomas Tuchel but two problems remainIt wasn’t just the performance that England had waited years for, it was an attitude.“Even if we lose,” Thomas Tuchel told his players at half-time in Dallas, “we do it our way.”There is so much in those few words that could yet have resulted in so much more than the four brilliant goals they got against Croatia. There was a new ethos, and the fulfilment of a promise. Tuchel had long said he wanted to restore a proper Premier League intensity to the national side, and here it was, offering one of the best performances in the World Cup so far.Maybe the best? That’s a debate that might seem more trivial, but could well point to how this tournament ends up finishing. Here, at the beginning in Dallas, England hadn’t initially started as well as anticipated. They went in at half-time of a then erratic 2-2 no doubt expecting a rocket. The watching world probably expected similar, given assistant manager Anthony Barry’s strikingly candid half-time interview.Jude Bellingham of England celebrates scoring his team's third goal (Getty)Tuchel didn’t go as far as his coach, though. He was as forthright as ever, sure, but encouraging as well.Harry Kane described it as “a great speech”.The Bayern Munich striker noted: “He told us to ‘take the shackles off, calm down and let’s go’. He said “what’s the worst that can happen?”There was then the crescendo, the call to arms. These may seem like mere words, that of course always sound better in victory, but a key was how they changed England’s play. They signalled an abandonment of caution, a will to… go for it.If it’s going to be unfairly easy to unfavourably compare Gareth Southgate to Tuchel with performances like this, it’s undeniably true that the former manager’s time was characterised by constraint.Harry Kane opened England’s account at the World Cup (PA Wire)England were superbly structured, but only rarely displayed the adventure to open opposition systems, and almost never in tournaments. It was all more staccato.Southgate didn’t so much throw caution to the wind as wrap it around the team.Tuchel, as Kane intimated, whipped that off.The team was released, to rage through Croatia in England’s best tournament spell in years.“I loved the reaction,” Tuchel said.It was surely hard for anyone else not to admire, which feeds into that question. Was this the best performance of the opening round? That’s probably going a bit too far given how England required that half-time team talk in the first place, but it may well have formed the best 15 minutes. In that spell, England maybe hit a peak that no one else has yet reached.England’s Marcus Rashford celebrates scoring his sides fourth goal (PA Wire)Croatia could barely keep up with it. Only desperation and luck kept the ball out and the score down. All of Kane, Anthony Gordon, Jude Bellingham and, later, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, were rampant.Bellingham’s goal, which felt emotionally symbolic for the player and the team, best distilled that drive; the absence of any doubt or hesitation. He went for it, just like the team. That, especially, is what Tuchel loved. It’s why he kept Bellingham on after a poor first half.He knew there was much more there. And has any other team in the tournament really done more? Has anyone matched that 15 minutes?Has anyone really matched that? Germany opened Curacao at will… but that’s Curacao, not Croatia. USA were maybe closest, but for longer rather than quite as high. Argentina were more about one player, in Lionel Messi. France were more about brilliant bursts, even though they had more tactical control. That’s why it feels that 15-minute spell was the best spell of football without necessarily being the best overall performance.England manager Thomas Tuchel applauds their fans after the match (Reuters)England still have issues to solve, and there were caveats. The midfield still needs to be worked on, with the added complication of Declan Rice struggling through an injury. It obviously helped that Luka Modric couldn’t even last the hour, an advantage that England will not enjoy against superior midfields.Tuchel will know he needs to address that. England’s shape there was often all over the place, especially in the first half. And even after the second-half surge, Croatia began to find gaps again. Tuchel has to get that trio right. If not, it will put further pressure on a suspect defence. That may be Tuchel’s greatest concern. He loves John Stones, especially for his leadership, but he just wasn’t able to move in the manner that has made him exceptional. Tuchel could have a decision there. England did drop off and there is the lingering question over whether that intensity can be replicated in the more oppressive conditions of stadiums that don’t have a roof. The solution to both problems may have come in the same strength, though. Tuchel used the immense strength in depth, the “finishers” off the bench. They may need more in more testing conditions.Bellingham of England hugs Thomas Tuchel (Getty)They still did it here, though. They did something the country has wanted for years, maybe decades, but were never really allowed.Tuchel didn’t just enable it. He demanded it and drove it.The team then blazed. This wasn’t just their way, it’s a new way, based on vintage English ideals. And it was, briefly, better than anything the World Cup has seen so far.Tuchel didn't so much throw caution to the wind. He set it ablaze.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMArsenal is not afraid to pay a huge fee for teenage forwardArsenal is not afraid to pay a huge fee for teenage forwardEli Junior Kroupi has emerged as one of the most sought-after young players in European football following a superb maiden season in the Premier League with Bournemouth. The Frenchman enjoyed a remarkable campaign and finished as the highest-scoring teenager in England’s top flight, an achievement that has significantly enhanced his reputation across the continent. His performances have attracted attention from several leading clubs, with many viewing him as one of the brightest young talents currently playing in European football. As a result, speculation surrounding his future has continued to grow in recent months.Bournemouth Determined to Protect Their AssetBournemouth regard Kroupi as one of their most important players, but the club have long been recognised for their willingness to sell when the right offer arrives. The Cherries are expected to consider substantial bids for the forward, although reports suggest they could demand more than €100 million for his signature. Such a valuation reflects both his potential and the importance of his contribution to the team. The sizeable asking price is also seen as a way of discouraging clubs from making a move this summer, particularly given the growing interest in the teenager from some of Europe’s biggest sides.Arsenal and PSG Monitoring SituationAccording to Sport Witness, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to spend heavily in an attempt to sign Kroupi because they believe he has the potential to become one of the best players in the world.Despite still being a teenager, he already plays with confidence and fearlessness, qualities that have impressed scouts and decision-makers at elite clubs. Those attributes, combined with his productivity in front of goal, have convinced admirers that he could develop into an even bigger star in the years ahead. Both clubs reportedly view him as a player capable of making a significant impact if his development continues at its current rate. That belief explains their willingness to consider a major financial commitment. While Bournemouth remain determined to keep hold of him unless an exceptional offer arrives, Arsenal are reportedly prepared to make a substantial investment because they believe Kroupi can reward that faith with top-level performances and continued growth in the future._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFlick views Barcelona captain as fifth-choice option ahead of the new season – reportFlick views Barcelona captain as fifth-choice option ahead of the new season – reportBarcelona have several issues to solve in terms of their squad ahead of the new season, both in terms of signings and sales. There are some players whose prominence has grown in the last 12 months, and there are others whose has dropped off a cliff in the same period. One such player who had a very difficult 2025/26 season was captain Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan had many moments to forget over the course of the campaign.Perhaps the most telling one came at Stamford Bridge, when the captain was sent off following a horrendous tackle. Subsequently, he took a sabbatical to get his mind right.Although he did show signs of improvement after returning from the sabbatical, his future in Blaugrana still remains very much up in the air.Dropping down the pecking orderFlick sees Araujo as his fifth-choice defender. (Photo by Molly Darlington/Getty Images)According to AS, Flick sees Araujo as useful and respects his status in the dressing room as first captain, but currently considers him the fifth centre-back in the squad, behind Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen. That is a major shift for a player who was once viewed as Barça’s defensive leader.Araujo has physical power, recovery speed and personality, but Flick’s structure appears to demand different qualities at centre-back: cleaner build-up, sharper positioning and constant coordination in a high line. This should not be framed as a lack of respect. Araujo has given Barcelona a lot, and the club also supported him through a very difficult personal period after he stepped away because of mental health issues. However, football moves quickly. Pau Cubarsi has grown into a central figure, and Barça’s defensive hierarchy no longer belongs automatically to Araujo. The 2026/27 season will be difficult for Araujo. (Photo by Guillermo Legaria/Getty Images)The financial side makes the situation even more complicated. Araujo is not a low-cost squad player. If he is now seen as the fifth choice while earning a significant salary, Barcelona have to study the case carefully. It is now up to AraujoFor now, neither the club nor the player are said to be pushing for an exit. Still, he has a decision to make.If he stays, he must accept that his role has changed and fight his way back with performances, not status. That means adapting to Flick’s demands, whether as a centre-back, right-back or emergency option.Barcelona also need to be honest with him. Araujo deserves clarity. If another defender arrives and his pathway narrows further, a sale might become a necessity. This is a difficult one from the club’s perspective and for the player himself. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Araujo and how Barça handle this situation involving one of the leaders of their dressing room.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Austin Reaves could leave Lakers if contract offer is too lowThere seems to be a quiet confidence that Austin Reaves, who is expected to opt out of his contract this summer, will agree to a new contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, it isn't exactly a foregone conclusion that he will remain with the Purple and Gold.He is eligible for a max contract that would pay him as much as $239 million over five years to stay put. Many believe he isn't quite worth that much money, even after averaging 23.3 points and 5.5 assists a game this season and becoming a legitimate All-Star candidate.Michael Scotto of HoopsHype wrote in a recent article that if Los Angeles makes the guard an offer he or his representation considers too low, he could end up leaving."Ultimately, there’s a strong belief within league circles that if the Lakers offer Reaves close to or the full max, he’ll stay in Los Angeles," Scotto wrote. "However, if the Lakers submit a low-ball offer, Reaves will consider other offers, and the possibility of a sign-and-trade could also emerge."Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times recently said on Spectrum SportsNet that Reaves is seeking a max contract. Teams such as the Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks could reportedly make a run at him as well. There are those who feel the Lakers would be better off executing a sign-and-trade involving Reaves because of his lack of athleticism and defense. But a team source said that the concerns about the 28-year-old's defensive shortcomings are "overstated."Reaves has made it clear multiple times that his preference is to remain with the Lakers. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Report: Austin Reaves could leave Lakers if contract offer is too low0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup fever: Scottish, Moroccan fans amped for high-stakes showdown at Boston StadiumThe 2026 FIFA World Cup returns to Foxborough on Friday as excitement builds ahead of a pivotal Group C showdown between Scotland and Morocco at Boston Stadium.Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., with both teams entering the match fresh off strong results in their opening games, raising the stakes for what could shape the group standings moving forward.Players from Morocco arrived in the Boston area on Wednesday, landing at Hanscom Air Force Base. Team Scotland has been in town since last week, having played in the first World Cup game in Foxborough on Saturday, when they defeated Haiti 1-0. Morocco played to a 1-1 draw against powerhouse Brazil on Saturday as well. While preparations on the field have been focused and businesslike, the atmosphere off the pitch is anything but.Fans from around the world have flooded into Massachusetts, creating a festive, international atmosphere across the region. Morocco supporters, many dressed in red jerseys and waving flags, gathered in large numbers at Boston City Hall Plaza on Wednesday night, chanting and celebrating ahead of the match. Some fans are still trying to secure last-minute tickets, while others are planning to attend official watch events, including FIFA Fan Fest in Boston and a large viewing party in Revere.Scottish fans, many sporting traditional kilts, have also made a strong showing — and appear to be embracing the shared celebration. They’ve been partying so much that some bars in Boston are running dry on beer.“It’s fun to have fun and peace and to be together, to celebrate together,” said Morocco supporter Aziz Baoussouh.“So long as they don’t beat us, it’ll be happy days,” said Scotland fan Scott Paterson with a laugh.“If everybody here locally treats the Moroccans just like they’ve treated us, they’ll be here for a good time, and we’ll all have a great time,” added Oliver Travers. The growing energy is even visible inside Boston Stadium, where heavy fan activity has left some seats in the stands broken. While the focus remains on Friday’s matchup, anticipation is also building for upcoming games, including England’s appearance at Boston Stadium next week — a development that could stir different emotions among Scotland supporters. For now, though, the spotlight is firmly on Scotland and Morocco as Foxborough prepares for another electric World Cup night.Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.Follow Boston 25 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch Boston 25 News NOW0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPhillips’ maiden test century leads priceless morning for New Zealand at The OvalLONDON (AP) — Glenn Phillips' maiden test century led a priceless second morning for New Zealand against England at The Oval on Thursday.New Zealand was bowled for 391 after resuming on 291-7 and Phillips was the last man out for an even 100 on a warm, sunny morning. The Black Caps would have thought 350 a bonus with their tail exposed and the new ball imminent. But England's own valid hopes of quickly cleaning up the tail were undermined by overdoing the short balls and not having its most potent weapon, Jofra Archer. His eight overs in a row of venom bowled at the end of Wednesday were exhilarating but probably also taxing in his first test since December.England's leading striker didn't appear until close to lunch, the 19th over of the morning. He collected New Zealand's ninth wicket and the innings was over moments later. In three overs before lunch, England made 15 without loss.Archer's duel with Phillips on Wednesday night was the highlight of the first day. Archer's barrage of bouncers landed Phillips frequently on his back, along with blows on a finger and two on the shoulder. But by the time Archer reappeared on Thursday, Phillips was on 97. Maybe fittingly, Phillips hit two runs and a single off Archer to reach his first test hundred. Archer gave Phillips a congratulatory tap on the back. Thanks to England's misplaced short-ball tactic, Phillips and tailender Kyle Jamieson cashed in.They scored 74 runs together in the 12 overs in the first hour and New Zealand flew past 350.Jamieson was dropped on 15 by Ben Duckett looking into the sun with his sunglasses on his cap, and New Zealand's tallest ever cricketer at 2.07 meters (6-foot-8) was tonked twice on his helmet. From 6 overnight, Jamieson hit six more boundaries, a couple of them exquisite cover drives. He was out for 41 off 48 balls, his highest test score in six years. He was bowled by part-time spinner Jacob Bethell, who took a team-leading three wickets.Jamieson's exit ended an entertaining partnership with Phillips of 87 from 96 balls.Phillips had resumed on 49 and brought up 50 off the day's second delivery with a top edge over the wicketkeeper. Without Archer to duck at, Phillips punished the wayward balls of Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue.Bethell’s spin was hailed after just five overs of the new ball.Phillips passed his previous highest test score of 87 against Bangladesh in 2023 and comfortably racked up his hundred off 133 balls with 18 boundaries, following two centuries each in one-day internationals and Twenty20s.Then Matt Henry fell to Archer and Phillips holed out to deep midwicket.___AP cricket: https://apnews.com/hub/cricket0 Commentaires 0 Parts 15 Vue 0 Avis

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJazz, Walker Kessler engaged in 'tense negotiations' over extensionTim MacMahon: The Jazz are determined to keep Walker Kessler. Now, there is a gulf between the Jazz front office and Walker Kessler's camp in terms of his value. The Jazz have put it off on the table for five years and roughly $140 million. Walker Kessler's representation believes his value is significantly higher than that. There were discussions with the Indiana Pacers before they traded for Zubac about trading for Kessler, giving up two first-round picks and signing him to a deal that would have been north of that. The Jazz have also been very firm: They want a five-year deal, they want a five-year commitment. Kessler is a restricted free agent. The Jazz would have the right to match any offer that he received in restricted free agency, and they're using that leverage. These are tense negotiations.
