Rory McIlroy finding 'comfort zone' at 2026 U.S. Open after solid start
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – Despite bogeys at his last two holes of the day, Rory McIlroy was pleased to be in the clubhouse with an opening-round 1-under-par 69 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Thursday at the 126th U.S. Open.“I think with the conditions today, anything under par or anything around even par is a good score,” the world No. 2 and reigning Masters champion said. “It was a day to really just keep yourself in the tournament and not shoot yourself out of it, which is exactly what I did eight years ago here.”That was a reference to an opening-round 78 when, as he put it, he was blown away by the wind. Speaking to Golfweek, McIlroy recalled standing on the 14th tee in 2018 during the first round and the wind was whipping off the left. “I remember being like I can’t aim far enough left to hit the fairway,” he said. “I wasn’t driving the ball particularly well at the time. I have a few more shots in the quiver to piece it together when I’m not feeling great. I have that low bullet I like to hit where I stand a little closer to the ball so I’m a little more upright. It’s become a dependable shot."More: U.S. Open hub: Scores, stories, video and moreAfter McIlroy missed the 36-hole cut in 2018, he headed to the Travelers Championship, where he remembers feeling in his comfort zone going to TPC River Highlands. The 2012 U.S. Open champ came to the following realization: “I've got this backwards,” he said. “I should be in my comfort zone at Shinnecock and not here.”At the end of the 2018 season when he was flying back from Dubai, McIlroy wrote in his diary that going forward he would build his game to compete at the major championships and excel at the toughest tests. What did he work on? “The things that you need to do well to excel at (majors), which is flighting the ball, hitting your numbers, wedge play, short game, putting, which is all the stuff that I feel like I've improved over the last few years,” he said.More: 2026 U.S. Open leaderboard, live updates at windy ShinnecockAnd the first round was a fine example of the strides he has made in his game since flaming out at the U.S. Open the last time it was played at Shinnecock. He’s recorded 18 top 10s at majors, including the two Green Jackets, in the last 31 majors. On Thursday, McIlroy started on the back nine and birdied Nos. 11 and 12 to get into red figures before making bogeys at 13 and 16.He spun a wedge to a couple of feet at the par-4 third for an easy birdie and then, after spraying his tee shot into the hay at the fourth, his second shot bounced off the cart path and when it came to rest, a fan bent over and tried to pick it up. In the fescue off the tee and then...Rory's in trouble on 4. pic.twitter.com/iSWk6KKJtL— U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 18, 2026But McIlroy salvaged par and after bashing a 396-yard drive at the fifth, wedging from 190 yards to 11 feet, he drilled the eagle putt to move to 3 under overall and held the solo lead. But he bogeyed Nos. 8 and 9 to settle for 69.“It's so tough. It's so difficult. I didn't feel like I hit two bad iron shots on the last two holes and put myself in pretty difficult spots and wasn't able to get it up-and-down, but overall a really good day,” he said. “It's a challenging golf course already, and you put 30-mile-an-hour winds on top of it, it tests the best players in the world pretty well.”Adam Schupak is a senior writer for Golfweek, covering the PGA Tour. This article originally appeared on Golfweek: Rory McIlroy finds comfort at Shinnecock Hills

Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia: Substitutes spearhead Swiss to emphatic World Cup victory
Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia: Substitutes spearhead Swiss to emphatic World Cup victoryStandings provided bySofascoreSwitzerland scored four goals in just over twenty minutes in a second half rampage against Bosnia & Herzegovina to soar top of Group B in their second group match at the World Cup.The Swiss lacked the creativity to unlock Bosnia’s disciplined unit up until Murat Yakin’s triple change with just shy of twenty minutes of normal time to play.Johan Manzambi’s exquisitely controlled volley was the start of Switzerland’s resounding win and Turak Muharemovic’s red card made the Bosnians uphill battle steeper.Ruben Vargas placed a pinpoint effort beyond the outstretched glove of Nikola Vasilj, and went on to assist Manzambi to convert from close-range for his second.Bosnia had something to momentarily soften the blow in California when Ermin Mahmic slammed home a volley, but Granit Xhaka’s penalty restored the three-goal lead to give Switzerland their first victory at this World Cup.As it happenedIn Switzerland’s pursuit to advance to the last 16 of the World Cup for the fourth successive time, the onus was firmly on them to breach the sitting Bosnian defence in Los Angeles.Commanding the ball from the outset, Switzerland aimed to address the shortcomings in front of goal that cost them dearly in the draw with Qatar, but failed to make their possession count in the first half.Captain Xhaka orchestrated with line breaking passes and slipped in Nottingham Forest winger Dan Ndoye, who ghosted into a pocket of space between defenders and fired into the side netting.Fabian Rieder was next to receive Xhaka’s services on the left flank, after being picked to start this time out in Yakin’s lineup, spraying a teasing low cross towards Ndoye. He could not apply the finishing touch and had a tame effort from the edge of the area to follow. The Swiss were continuing to bide their time and opting to pounce on the right opportunities, primarily through Xhaka, to burst into the penalty box, until Remo Freuler unleashed from range and whistled his strike wide.Bosnia kept sturdy to limit their opponents from fashioning anything to unsettle them, with Muharemovic in particular stifling Breel Embolo leading the line for Switzerland.40-year-old striker Edin Dzeko lofted an inviting ball towards Benjamin Tahirovic in one sporadic venture into Switzerland territory, igniting the Bosnian faithful flocking to Los Angeles admirably in their thousands.Shades of the 1-1 draw to Qatar emerged as Switzerland’s rhythm dropped and a lack of imagination in the final third left Vasilj largely untroubled between the sticks for Bosnia.Sergej Barbarez’s side ended the first half posing a threat as teenager Kerim Alajbegovic acknowledged finishing duties were reserved for veteran Dzeko, but Freuler sprawled to smother his shot.As the lowest ranked European team at the World Cup, there was plenty to build on with Ermedin Demirovic spotting Sead Kolasinac galloping down the left flank and bringing an intensity Switzerland could not summon just yet.The Swiss did start to craft better openings and Ndoye was again their weapon capable of inflicting the most damage.Another strike towards the near post was safely held by the Bosnia goalkeeper and lacked conviction once again, but he was the one to almost conjure the moment to lift his nation.Xhaka curled a delightful cross into the box, which Ndoye acrobatically reached for with a powerful overhead kick, only for Vasilj to repel from close-range and deny the Forest man’s magic World Cup breakthrough in this tie. This gave a platform for Switzerland to eventually reap the rewards for their attacking endeavours. Embolo’s header from a corner ricocheted off Nikola Katic, calling upon Vasilj to spring to his right and tip round the post.Esmir Bajraktarevic and Ivan Basic were the ones entrusted to make an impact from the bench for Barbarez, who seemed keen to test Switzerland’s back line and push to claim the full spoils rather than strolling to another draw.Right-back Amar Dedic pulled the trigger with a rasping drive for Gregor Kobel to parry moments before the second hydration break. The immediate impact from the substitutes came from the opposite dugout though, as Switzerland scored the game’s opener, courtesy of their attacking substitutes.Vargas clipped in a cross and Bosnia’s short clearance dropped to Manzambi, and Switzerland’s youngest squad member guided his volley towards the top right corner in the 74th minute.Manzambi’s pass carved open Bosnia and things went from bad to worse for them when Muharemovic’s late sliding challenge as the last man on Embolo prompted the referee to brandish a red card.Substitute Vargas rifled the free-kick to Vasilj’s side, but a swift Swiss move culminated in the Sevilla winger stroking a fine finish into the bottom right corner to double the advantage.Bosnia were unraveling and Vargas darted behind the defence to pull back to Manzambi – who began his career as a goalkeeper – for his brace, ticking towards ninety minutes.Although the result slipped away, the ten-men of Bosnia found a consolation goal when 21-year-old Mahmic smashed in a volley inside the box minutes after coming on.Amar Memic took down Djibril Sow, and Xhaka scored the resulting penalty to deliver the knockout blow, and Switzerland will sit at the top of Group B before they collide with co-hosts Canada. For more detailed reports, reaction, and analysis of the World Cup as it happens, head to our website and favourite our page on OneFootball. Brewers drop series finale to Guardians, 4-2
Jun 18, 2026; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA; Cleveland Guardians center fielder Daniel Schneemann (10) scores on a wild pitch in the seventh inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. Mandatory Credit: Benny Sieu-Imagn Images | Benny Sieu-Imagn Images Box ScoreThe Brewers were unable to complete a sweep of the Guardians on Thursday afternoon, as Cleveland stayed in the game all day before pulling ahead and ultimately winning 4-2 behind three solo homers.Shane Drohan worked around a one-out walk in the first, while Parker Messick set the Brewers down in order in the bottom of the frame.Cleveland had some traffic in the second, as Kyle Manzardo was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Gabriel Arias, but Drohan settled in to record a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to escape the mini-jam.The Brewers mounted their own threat in the bottom of the second, as Andrew Vaughn and Jake Bauers reached on a walk and single, respectively. Gary Sánchez then brought in the first run of the afternoon on a single just out of reach of second baseman Travis Bazzana, giving Milwaukee a 1-0 lead and putting runners at the corners with no outs.El Gary makes it a 1-0 ballgame→ https://t.co/eycfmE2vgmpic.twitter.com/mUNMxUADlv— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) June 18, 2026Blake Perkins followed with a groundout to third, as Arias went home with it to get Bauers trying to score. Cooper Pratt then struck out on a pitch over his head, and Joey Ortiz nearly extended the lead with a hard liner, but right fielder Kahlil Watson — in his MLB debut — made a nice diving catch to keep the score at 1-0.After Bazzana grounded out to begin the third, Drohan got into a nine-pitch battle with David Fry, who ultimately slugged a homer over the wall in left-center, just out of reach of Perkins, tying things up at 1-1.Drohan’s third-inning troubles continued, as he gave up a single and walk with one out, but he was able to keep the game tied with a pair of groundouts.Christian Yelich hit a ground-rule double to begin the third but would be stranded on the basepaths as Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, and Jake Bauers all struck out. After Drohan bounced back for a 1-2-3 fourth, the Brewers regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Sánchez drew a walk, Perkins doubled, and Pratt hit a sac fly to make it 2-1 Brewers.Cooper Pratt puts the Crew ahead with a sac fly→ https://t.co/68EQQYUZ6Zpic.twitter.com/p0umLA271n— Brewers.TV (@BrewersdotTV) June 18, 2026Drohan worked another scoreless fifth, and that marked the end of his day. It was a solid albeit inefficient day for the rookie lefty, as he went five innings with one run allowed on three hits and three walks, striking out three on 91 pitches.Joel Kuhnel took over for the Brewers in the sixth and gave up a game-tying solo homer to Manzardo on a 1-1 cutter he left over the plate.Messick kept the tie intact in the bottom of the sixth, and Cleveland pulled into their first lead of the game — and the series — in the seventh, as Grant Anderson gave up a one-out solo shot to Bazzana, making it 3-2 Guardians. Anderson continued to struggle from there, giving up a pair of walks before inducing a pop-out.Anderson was then pulled for lefty Drew Rom, who promptly walked Manzardo to load the bases with two outs for Arias. Arias didn’t need to do anything, though, as Rom buried his first pitch in the dirt, a wild pitch that allowed all runners to advance and extending the lead to 4-2 before Arias ultimately struck out.Against lefty reliever Tim Herrin in the seventh, Pratt drew a leadoff walk but was wiped out by a quick 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Ortiz. Yelich then walked, and Guardians manager Stephen Vogt went to Colin Holderman to face Chourio. After falling behind 0-2 against Holderman, Chourio worked it back to a 2-2 count before reaching on a hit by pitch that (luckily) went off his padding. Turang then followed with a walk of his own, and Vaughn got into a full count but grounded out to short to end the inning, as Brayan Rocchio and Rhys Hoskins both flashed the leather to end the frame.Rom worked around a single, a balk, a wild pitch, and a walk in the eighth, keeping the deficit at two with Hunter Gaddis entering to pitch.Gaddis, who gave up the go-ahead homer in Tuesday night’s game, walked Bauers to start things off, but Sánchez and the pinch-hitting Garrett Mitchell — who hit that homer on Tuesday — struck out. Pratt fell behind 0-2 but worked it to 2-2 before lining a single to right, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Vogt didn’t mess around, bringing closer Cade Smith in for Gaddis as he’d have to face the pinch-hitting William Contreras.Contreras walked on four pitches, meaning Smith would have to face the lefty Yelich with the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. Yelich couldn’t make anything of the opportunity, though, as he struck out on four pitches.Craig Yoho got the ninth inning for Milwaukee, and he gave up a leadoff double to Rocchio but stranded him at third behind a pair of strikeouts and a flyout.Still facing a 4-2 deficit after a pair of squandered bases-loaded opportunities, the top of Milwaukee’s order would have to mount a rally against the hard-throwing Smith. It wasn’t to be, though, Vaughn was the only player to reach via a four-pitch walk, with Chourio grounding out, Turang striking out, and Bauers flying out.It was a disappointing loss, as the Brewers had plenty of scoring chances — they had five hits and nine walks on the afternoon, but they also struck out 13 times. As a team, they went just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base, not ideal for a team that relies so heavily on small ball.Sánchez and Pratt both had an RBI in this one, and Vaughn led the team by reaching base three times, all via walk. Yelich, Bauers, Sánchez, and Pratt all had a hit and walk each.Beyond Drohan, who left in line for the win, Kuhnel took a blown save and Anderson took the loss with two runs allowed in the seventh. Rom and Yoho worked around traffic in the final few innings, allowing no runs and striking out five over 2 1/3 frames. After a solid 4-2 homestand, the Brewers are headed back on the road as they’ll take on the NL East-leading Braves in Atlanta beginning Friday night. Jacob Misiorowski is on the hill for Friday’s series opener, with veteran lefty Martín Pérez set to start for Atlanta. First pitch is set for 6:15 p.m.

Todd Bowles suggests 2025 Buccaneers took plays off
After the Buccaneers blew a big lead on a Thursday night against the Falcons, he let the expletives fly regarding the team's in-game deficiencies. Recently, Bowles provided a less profane assessment of the factors that doomed the Bucs from turning a 6-2 start into a sixth straight playoff appearance.Via JoeBucsFan.com, Bowles recently addressed the team's 2026 prospects in an interview with Sports Day Tampa Bay."If we can prepare and we can execute, and we don’t look at the names on people’s helmets, and we can play the same every week and learn how to finish off games and close games out — instead of getting a lead and just taking plays off, or not having a lead and having to come back late,” Bowles said. While it's not a direct admission that the team took plays off, the context makes the message clear.“You just want to play four quarters and you want to go out there," Bowles added. "And I think we have those types of alpha dogs on our team right now that will make this team to elevate to that. When they start coaching themselves and don’t need too much coaching on the sideline, that’s when you know you’ve arrived."The Buccaneers are in one of the weaker divisions in the NFL, but that could be changing. The Panthers are better. The Saints are improving. And the Falcons could be onto something.Regardless, it's hard for any NFL team to succeed if they take plays off. And that seems to be one of the things the 2025 Buccaneers did.

USA vs. Paraguay, 2026 World Cup: Man of the Match
TOPSHOT - US forward #20 Folarin Balogun celebrates with teammates after scoring his team's third goal during the 2026 World Cup Group D football match between USA and Paraguay at the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood on June 12, 2026. (Photo by Patrick T. Fallon / AFP via Getty Images) | AFP via Getty Images The USMNT could not have asked for a better start to the 2026 World Cup. The team took a 1-0 lead in front of a raucous home crowd last Friday, scoring just 7’ minutes into the match after a driving run by Christian Pulisic to split a pair of defenders and a ball to Weston McKennie which was then redirected into the net by Damian Bobadilla for an own goal and the US was off and running. There had been some questions about the lineup coming into the match, primarily around whether Center back Chris Richards would be available to start as he had been dealing with injury but he was indeed set to go and was joined in the back by Tim Ream, who many thought was too old four years ago but is back again and looked up to the task in the team’s opener. For that matter, all eleven players looked up to the task on the day. It was as positive a result as the US have seen from all eleven players in a very long time, perhaps ever on this stage. The team would score their first conventional goal in the 31st minute when Christian Pulisic would find Folarin Balogun for his first goal of the night. Just before the halftime break the US took a 3-0 lead when a fantastic ball from Malik Tillman found Folarin Balogun again who did well to maintain control before blasting the ball to the top corner. At the half Sebastian Berhalter would come in for Christian Pulisic who was pulled due to some tightness in his calf after taking a kick. The substitution was dually unfortunate as Pulisic had been playing very well and the US took a more passive role in his absence. The defense did give up a goal in the 73rd minute when they failed to deal with a long ball and Mauricio took advantage to make the score 3-1. It wasn’t close to enough though and Gio Reyna would provide the icing on the cake in beautiful fashion with a stoppage time goal struck with the outside of his boot to curl around a defender and the keeper. After such a fine showing it’s not surprise that the player rankings were quite high across the board. Christian Pulisic ended the match ratings with fantastic 8.71 and all the starting field players scored above a 6.5 with a noticeable drop for the subs not named Reyna as things predictably tailed off in the second half. The highest of the rankings though were reserved for brace scoring Folarin Balogun who earns our opening match SSFC Man of the Match award with a 9.23 rating, a half point ahead of Pulisic and a full point above all the other players. NFL insider reveals Washington is not going to ‘press’ for 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk
As the world turns with Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers, another report from an NFL insider revealed the belief that the Washington Commanders will not look to trade for the controversial receiver. A trade for Aiyuk has always felt unlikely due to the contract number, commitment, and the confidence in Aiyuk’s commitment to playing football. Any return for Aiyuk would be in the final two rounds of the draft, in all likelihood. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported from Virginia, where the Washington Commanders currently are, and reiterated the biggest issue holding Aiyuk back from being able to join the Commanders and his friend Jayden Daniels. “I’ll use this end of things to tell you that the Washington Commanders are not looking to press for Brandon Aiyuk. And my understanding is if he becomes a free agent, they will then take a look at Brandon Aiyuk and the possibility of bringing him in and reuniting him with Jayden Daniels, who was sort of asked about Aiyuk today. When he talked about having a throwing session with his receivers and was asked, “Is anybody else gonna be there?” He sort of didn’t really answer that one.”The elephant in the room is that Aiyuk reporting for training camp would be the quickest way to gain his release from the 49ers. There is little to no chance the 49ers will allow Aiyuk to hang around the building and would likely release him as soon as he reports. If Aiyuk doesn’t report, the 49ers don’t have to do anything. The list Aiyuk is on is for players who are typically retiring. The team wouldn’t be obligated to pay Aiyuk any money without his attendance. Garafolo outlined plainly the process for Aiyuk to expedite his move to Washington. “Brandon Aiyuk is a possibility here in Virginia. If the 49ers let him go at some point, and that could be before training camp, but Aiyuk sorta has to force the issue here. He has to show a willingness to show up in Santa Clara before the 49ers go, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. No, no, no. No, don’t worry, we don’t want you getting injured here. We are then going to release you.” And then at that point, I would say it is extremely likely he winds up in Ashburn, but a couple of steps until we get there.”

Series Preview: Milwaukee Brewers @ Atlanta Braves
Aug 6, 2025; Cumberland, Georgia, USA; Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Trevor Megill (29) and catcher William Contreras (24) react after defeating the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images | Dale Zanine-Imagn Images The Milwaukee Brewers are back on the road, as they’ll head to Georgia to take on the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series against the NL East’s top team. Milwaukee, fresh off a pair of series wins against the Phillies and Guardians, sits in first place in the NL Central, while the Braves, with a nearly identical record to the Crew, sit ahead of the Phillies in the East.Milwaukee’s injuries include Brandon Woodruff (expected to return next week), Coleman Crow (July), DL Hall (late July), Logan Henderson (early July), Jared Koenig (could return in the next week), Rob Zastryzny (late June/early July), Brian Fitzpatrick (likely out for the season), Carlos Rodriguez (TBD), and season-ending injuries to pitchers Quinn Priester and Angel Zerpa. Outfielder Brandon Lockridge is also nearing a rehab assignment, meaning we could see him in late June/early July.Atlanta is currently without pitchers Spencer Strider (TBD), Joe Jiménez (out for season), AJ Smith-Shawver (out until at least late 2026), Spencer Schwellenbach (late 2026), Danny Young (post-All-Star break), and Joey Wentz (out for season). Infielder Kyle Farmer is out with a forearm strain, catcher Sean Murphy is out until late July with a fractured finger, outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. is eligible to return this weekend (though it’s unclear if he’ll be ready at the 10-day mark), and outfielder Michael Harris II is listed as day to day with back tightness.Jake Bauers leads Milwaukee’s offense with 13 homers, though Brice Turang and Jackson Chourio aren’t far behind at 11 and 10, respectively. Chourio has been the best hitter on the team since returning from injury, hitting over .300 over his 38 games. Gary Sánchez and William Contreras have also provided some pop behind the plate, and Garrett Mitchell, Christian Yelich, Sal Frelick, Andrew Vaughn, Joey Ortiz, David Hamilton, and rookie Cooper Pratt round out the squad. As a team, the Brewers are hitting .254/.340/.395 (.735 OPS ranks eighth), with 67 homers (26th), 383 runs (third), and 72 steals (third).Matt Olson and Drake Baldwin are raking for the Braves, as Olson is hitting .276/.346/.552 with a team-high 20 homers and 19 doubles, and Baldwin, a Wisconsin native who missed the last few weeks, has 14 homers and is slashing .298/.381/.540 after winning NL Rookie of the Year in 2025. Harris has also had a resurgence, while Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley also provide some pop. Ha-Seong Kim, Mauricio Dubón, Mike Yastrzemski, and Dominic Smith round out the starters, with former Brewer Rowdy Tellez, Eli White, Jorge Mateo, and Sandy León serving as depth. As a team, the Braves are hitting .254/.320/.423 (.743 OPS ranks sixth), with 97 homers (sixth), 366 runs (sixth), and 39 steals (tied for 22nd).Aaron Ashby leads Milwaukee’s bullpen with 33 appearances, pitching to a 2.80 ERA, perfect 10-0 record, and 61 strikeouts over 45 innings. Trevor Megill, Abner Uribe, and Chad Patrick round out the Brewers’ “A” bullpen, while Craig Yoho, Joel Kuhnel, and Drew Rom are the “B” bullpen, with Grant Anderson fitting somewhere in the middle. As a staff, the Brewers have a 3.43 team ERA (fourth), including a 3.39 starter ERA (fourth) and a 3.48 bullpen ERA (ninth). They’ve struck out 708 batters (first) over 645 1/3 innings.Dylan Lee leads Atlanta’s bullpen with 33 appearances, pitching to a stellar 1.14 ERA with 40 strikeouts over 31 2/3 innings. Just about all of their bullpen has been great, in face, as closer Raisel Iglesias (1.16 ERA) is perfect across 14 save chances, Robert Suarez (0.59 ERA) has allowed just two runs over 30 2/3 innings, and Didier Fuentes (2.25 ERA over 28 IP), Reynaldo López (3.76 ERA over 40 2/3 IP), Dylan Dodd (2.08 ERA over 17 1/3 IP), James Karinchak (0.00 ERA over 3 IP), and Carlos Carrasco (3.46 ERA over 13 IP) have also been solid. As a staff, the Braves have a 3.39 team ERA (third), including a 3.73 starter ERA (fifth) and a 2.91 bullpen ERA (first). They’ve struck out 630 batters (12th) over 649 2/3 innings.Probable PitchersFriday, June 19 @ 6:15 p.m.: RHP Jacob Misiorowski (8-2, 1.34 ERA, 1.68 FIP) vs. LHP Martín Pérez (5-3, 2.90 ERA, 3.82 FIP)Misiorowski continues to dominate all opponents, as he’s among league leaders in just about every major category to this point. He leads the league in ERA (1.34), FIP (1.68), WHIP (1.68), and strikeouts (131) across 87 innings over 14 starts this season. He’s coming off the best start of his career, as he threw a 95-pitch complete game shutout with just one hit allowed and 15 strikeouts, also facing the minimum thanks to a double play. This marks Miz’s first career start against the Braves.Pérez, 35, is in his 15th MLB season and with his seventh team, as he’s had a resurgence with the Braves this year. An All-Star for the first and only time in 2022 with Texas, Pérez has been about as good as he was that season, pitching to a 2.90 ERA, 3.82 FIP, and 51 strikeouts over 62 innings this season. He’s earned the win in each of his last three outings, allowing six runs over 15 1/3 innings (3.52 ERA) on 11 hits and six walks while striking out 11. Pérez has made five career appearances (four starts) against Milwaukee, with an 0-3 record, 8.54 ERA, and 16 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings.Saturday, June 20 @ 3:10 p.m.: LHP Kyle Harrison (8-1, 2.47 ERA, 3.05 FIP) vs. LHP Chris Sale (8-5, 2.30 ERA, 2.82 FIP)If Harrison pitched for just about any other team, he’d be considered the ace of the staff. Thanks to Miz, however, he’s a measly No. 2, even with an 8-1 record, 2.47 ERA, and 3.05 FIP this year. He’s struck out 80 batters over 65 2/3 innings spanning 13 starts, and he also has solid peripherals. He’s coming off a nice bounce-back outing against the Phillies, outpitching Philadelphia ace Cristopher Sánchez as he went six scoreless innings with three hits, a hit batter, and no walks allowed, striking out three on 80 pitches. Harrison’s only appearance against Atlanta came while he was with the Giants in 2024, as he went five innings and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out six in a no-decision.Sale, 37, is another lefty veteran for Atlanta, as he’s in his 16th MLB season with his third team. The NL Cy Young winner in 2024, Sale has a 2.30 ERA, 2.82 FIP, and 92 strikeouts over 78 1/3 innings this season. He’s coming off back-to-back losses, though, as he allowed five runs over 11 1/3 innings (3.97 ERA) on 16 hits and three walks, striking out 12 against the Blue Jays and White Sox. Sale is a perfect 2-0 over five career appearances against Milwaukee, with a 1.89 ERA and 45 strikeouts over 33 1/3 innings. Sunday, June 21 @ 12:35 p.m.: LHP Robert Gasser (0-3, 4.88 ERA, 6.10 FIP) vs. RHP Bryce Elder (5-4, 3.15 ERA, 3.75 FIP)Gasser, who had a great start to his career in 2024, hasn’t quite found the same magic in 2026, though he is coming off his best start of the year. While he has an 0-3 record, 4.88 ERA, 6.10 FIP, and 24 strikeouts over 24 innings this year, he looked much better than those numbers indicate against the Guardians on Tuesday night, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless frames with two hits and two walks allowed, striking out five on 92 pitches as he took the no-decision in a 2-1 victory. This marks Gasser’s first career start against the Braves.Elder, 27, is in his fifth MLB season, all with the Braves. After earning an All-Star selection in 2023, he struggled in 2024 and 2025, but he’s bounced back nicely thus far in 2026. Across 15 starts, Elder has a 3.15 ERA, 3.75 FIP, and 73 strikeouts over 88 2/3 innings. He got roughed up against the Mets in his last appearance, allowing six runs on 10 hits and two walks with just two strikeouts over four-plus innings in an 8-1 loss. Elder has made four career starts against Milwaukee, with a 2-1 record, 4.30 ERA, and 18 strikeouts over 23 innings. How to Watch & ListenFriday, June 19: Brewers TV; listen via radio on the Brewers Radio Network (620 WTMJ in Milwaukee)Saturday, June 20: Brewers TV; listen via radio on the Brewers Radio Network (620 WTMJ in Milwaukee)Sunday, June 21: Brewers TV; listen via radio on the Brewers Radio Network (620 WTMJ in Milwaukee)PredictionThis will be a fun series featuring a few high-profile pitching matchups, two solid offenses, and two division-leading squads. Martin Brundle warns Monaco GP penalty saga has "no easy solution"
Motorsport photoFormer Formula 1 driver and Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle has branded the handling of the Monaco Grand Prix pitlane penalties and Pierre Gasly's reinstated podium "a mess with no easy solution".Writing in his regular post-race column following the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, which saw Lewis Hamilton secure his maiden grand prix victory for Ferrari, Brundle commented on the Monaco penalty situation.Several drivers were handed penalties during the Monaco Grand Prix for speeding in the pitlane. While the majority of those drivers served the penalties during the race, Gasly, who finished third on the road, had the time added after the chequered flag and lost the podium as a result.Alpine lodged a right of review, which was ultimately successful after the French team was able to provide evidence clearing Gasly that was not available to the stewards at the time. Gasly's podium was subsequently reinstated ahead of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. McLaren and Red Bull, whose drivers either served their penalties during the race or were affected by the reinstated podium, have now begun the appeals process. Mercedes had, but has since withdrawn.Martin BrundleMartin Brundle"That's a very complicated and uncomfortable decision," Brundle wrote of Gasly's reinstated podium. "Other drivers in Monaco had served their penalties and adjusted strategies accordingly, and Russell's race was destroyed, but because they were not post-race penalties nothing was changed for them retrospectively in the results."This will now be appealed by Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull who all lost out. Ferrari are not too bothered as it cost Mercedes and McLaren points. This also sets a precedent of not serving marginal in-race penalties to preserve the right to contest them post-race."It's all a mess with no easy solution. It turns out one of the timing loops in the Monaco pit lane was 77cm shorter than calibrated hence lots of 60.1kph recordings when the limit was 60kph."He concluded: "Lessons will be learned no doubt and the story will presumably run a while."To read more Motorsport.com articles visit our website.

Massive DL Joseph Graves commits to Kansas State
Earlier this week, Joseph Graves went viral when a video from his official visit at Kansas State made its way around the internet. Five days later, he committed to the Wildcats, choosing the Big 12 program over N.C. State and more than 20 other offers. The hulking, 6-foot-2, 285-pounder took his OV to Manhattan the weekend of May 29 before visiting the Wolfpack the following weekend. The Wildcats emerged as the favorite following that trip, but got him back on campus again for an unofficial visit this past weekend. And that trip sealed the deal. He becomes the 24th commitment of the cycle for new head coach Collin Klein — and is the sixth new Wildcats pledge in as many days. K-State’s class now ranks among the top 30 in the country and No. 2 in the Big 12 a year after finishing No. 8 in the league. A Tulsa (Okla.) native, Graves starred at nearby Booker T. Washington as a sophomore, where he was the 5A-3 District Defensive Player of the Year. A dominant force on the interior, he finished that season with 82 tackles (52 for loss), 18 sacks and four forced fumbles.Ahead of his junior season, he transferred to national powerhouse IMG Academy. Last fall, he had 26 tackles and three sacks for a loaded Ascenders squad. He’ll be back there for his senior season before heading to Kansas State.Graves’ commitment comes after viral video at K-StateDespite taking his official visit more than two weeks ago, Graves’ trip didn’t gain much attention until last weekend when a video of his mom tackling him during his uniform photoshoot draw 10s of millions of social media impressions. He and his mom Megan Morris didn’t intend to go viral. They simply wanted to do something unique, she told Rivals’ Adam Gorney. “Joe had all these ideas about how he wanted to take his pictures and his videos and he said, ‘You have to tackle me in one of them,’ so I tackled him. He’s like, ‘You didn’t do it right, you have to tackle me again.’ So I guess on the second one I did it right.”DL Joseph Graves’ mom taking an active role during his official visit to Kansas State(via @X2Graves)https://t.co/rtWLQW0Cuipic.twitter.com/5Ndey8HFQV— Rivals (@Rivals) June 14, 2026Morris’ second attempt knocked Graves to the ground in a hilarious moment. “I expected her to barely tap me. I didn’t expect her to put me on the ground,” he said. “I was trying to flop a little bit but she came and knocked my head off. It was fun. It was a great visit.”From then, it felt like destiny that he would end up in K-State uniform. And with Thursday’s commitment that’s exactly what will happen.

Colts' Sauce Gardner wants everyone to know he was born in 2001, not 2000, and is 24 years old
With Sauce Gardner about to begin his first full season with the Indianapolis Colts, the All-Pro defensive back wants to clarify the record of his age. Gardner, whose given name is “Ahmad,” insists he is 24 years old, not 25. Yet that’s his listed age on sites including ESPN, Pro Football Reference, Pro Football Focus and Yahoo Sports with a birth date of Aug. 31, 2000. Apparently, even EA Sports’ “Madden NFL” game has that as Gardner’s birthday. “I’m 24!” Gardner told The Athletic’s James Boyd on the last day of Colts minicamp. “It’s crazy that I’m even being asked this.”Yet Gardner says his birth date is Aug. 31, 2001 and that he’s 24 years old. The NFL’s official website lists him as 24, though does not show his birth date. But Gardner says the correct birth date is listed on every official document since he played college football at the University of Cincinnati and was drafted by the New York Jets. Gardner says his driver’s license confirms his age, as does his passport, which the Colts verified. The four-year pro also cites another direct source for his age and birth date.“You can ask my mom!” he said to The Athletic. So how did such a mix-up occur? The problem apparently lies with Wikipedia, which had Gardner’s birth year as 2000. And as a result, Google searches on Gardner would cite the Wikipedia entry and list his age as 25, born in the year 2000. Wikipedia has since corrected the information and Gardner’s age is given as 24 in Google’s AI overview. Gardner was dealt by the Jets to the Colts last November at the NFL trade deadline. In exchange, the Jets received 2026 and 2027 first-round selections, in addition to receiver Adonai Mitchell. During his first two NFL seasons, Gardner earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and was named first-team All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl. He was limited to 11 games last year due to a calf injury. Less than five months before being traded, the Jets signed him to a four-year, $120.4 million contract that made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. (That deal has since been surpassed by the $124 million contract Trent McDuffie agreed to with the Los Angeles Rams after being acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs.)

Spurs predicted to cut ties with $229 million nightmare, acquire ex-Knicks All-Rookie guard
Spurs predicted to cut ties with $229 million nightmare, acquire ex-Knicks All-Rookie guard originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Considering the San Antonio Spurs’ season-ending NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks occurred less than a week ago, it’s safe to assume they haven’t yet recovered from missing out on an attainable championship. The fact that the Mitch Johnson-led ball club dominated the Knicks for a good portion of the series is impressive. Still, San Antonio’s inability to execute down the stretch of four of their five games was inexcusable, even for a young, inexperienced team. Veteran point guard De’Aaron Fox was supposed to offer the franchise a dependable late-game closer who made all the right reads when it mattered most. Instead, Fox had a nightmarish offensive showing in back-to-back outings (Games 4 and 5 with poor shooting performances and an unnecessary layup attempt in crunch time) and is still hearing about it days later. The real nightmare is Fox’s monster $229 million contract, as it would make life challenging for the Spurs if they ever zero in on trading him. Essentially, the Spurs could be stuck with Fox for the foreseeable future following his miserable postseason.CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn thinks there may be hope for San Antonio after all, though, floating the idea of the franchise trading him to the Toronto Raptors for a former New York Knicks All-Rookie guard.“Toronto has been linked to several big names over the past year,’ Quinn wrote last Sunday. “Fox isn't an ideal fit as a shaky shooter, but he's a major talent upgrade over their current guards, and the Spurs are one of the few teams that would likely be interested in one of their shakier contracts.”“Immanuel Quickley is overpaid at $32.5 million per year for the next three years, but he's uniquely valuable to the Spurs since he's been a very effective bench player in the past, his contract expires a year earlier than Fox's and therefore doesn't overlap with Harper's eventual rookie extension, and even if he's overpaid, he makes so much less than Fox that those savings could be beneficial in other ways.”Quickley’s high volume perimeter shooting, polished in-between game, and ability to hold his own as a defender in one-on-one situations contributed to one of the Raptors’ best seasons in recent years. The Kentucky product averaged 16.4 points, 5.9 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game on a Raptors squad that earned the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference and was a win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.Given that Quickley is young, performs on both ends of the floor, and is known for his high-IQ approach to the game, he would fit well with a Spurs squad that’s likely a few impactful additions away from being on the right side of a lopsided 4-1 NBA Finals series.More NBA news:Spurs predicted to cut ties with $229 million point guard after all-time NBA Finals blunderSpurs predicted to outbid Warriors for $101 million Lakers star, four-time NBA championLuka Doncic sends clear message to Lakers on roster they can't afford to ignore

Former Patriots fan-favorite named offseason standout for new team
Former New England Patriots edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson, who signed with the Washington Commanders in free agency, has picked up where he left off last season with his new team. According to Commanders coach Dan Quinn, via Ben Standig, Chaisson has been one of "few players that stood out/stepped up throughout the offseason program."He signed a one-year, $11 million deal with the Commanders in March, following a career season with the Patriots. The veteran defender recorded 10 tackles for a loss and 7.5 tackles in 16 games. He also racked up four tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and three sacks in the postseason. During the offseason, the Patriots decided to move on with Dre'Mont Jones, leaving Chaisson to take his talents elsewhere on a one-year prove-it deal. Dan Quinn highlighted a few players that stood out/stepped up throughout the offseason program:Offense - RB Rachaad White, WR Van Jefferson, WR Jaden BradleyDefense - DE T.J. Maguranyanga, DE K'Lavon Chaisson, DT Johnny Newton, LB Jordan Magee, LB Kain Medrano— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) June 18, 2026The Patriots could probably use Chaisson with some of the questions they currently have on the edge. Harold Landry III, who was banged up throughout the 2025 season, is still on the mend, and Gabe Jacas, the Patriots' rookie second-round draft pick, has yet to sign his contract. The hope is that Jacas' contract situation will eventually get resolved, and Landry will return at some point. But there are no guarantees for a Patriots team that still has a clear need on the edge. Liverpool to make big bid for World Cup star as Mohamed Salah replacement
Liverpool are prepared to pay £86m for Yan Diomande as they seek to make the RB Leipzig winger their successor to Mohamed Salah.New head coach Andoni Iraola is trying to complete a £120m double deal for wingers after arranging to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34m.Now Liverpool have turned their attention to Ivory Coast’s Diomande as they ready a package worth around €100m.Yan Diomande is one of Europe’s brightest young talents (AP)However, they face competition from the double Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain while Leipzig are thought to want at least €130m for the 19-year-old.Diomande, who excelled on his World Cup debut as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0, joined Leipzig last year for €20m from Leganes. He scored 12 goals and got eight assists last season in the Bundesliga to help Leipzig qualify for the Champions League. While Munoz is seen as a versatile attacker who can operate across the forward line, Diomande could be more of a replacement for Salah on the right.Diomande is shining for Ivory Coast at the World Cup (Reuters)At £86m, he would be the third most expensive signing in their history after last summer’s arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.Liverpool have prioritised forwards in this summer’s transfer market, with Salah leaving, Federico Chiesa likely to go and Hugo Ekitike missing the start of next season. They have bought from Leipzig in the past, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Ibrahima Konate and Naby Keita all arriving from the German club.

How the Tartan Army captured the heart of Boston
[PA Media]In just over a week, the Tartan Army have drunk the bars of Boston dry and won the heart of the city and its people. It is estimated around 50,000 Scotland fans have visited the city in the period surrounding Scotland's two group stage matches.Scotland will play Morocco in the city later and afterwards the hordes of fans that have called the city home in recent weeks are expected to head to Florida. Many locals say they will be sad to see the Scottish football fans go.Countless videos of the Tartan Army's exploits have gone viral. From signing and dancing at Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox baseball team, to playing the bagpipes in the suburbs of the city, Bostonians have loved every minute of it.It's been good for business too.Devon Savage from Boston Beer which owns the Samuel Adams Taproom said the Tartan Army had "drunk them dry".She added: "For perspective, from Thursday-Sunday, the Tartan Army drank four times as much Boston Lager as we run through on a typical four-day holiday stretch like 4th of July."We had to schedule an 'emergency delivery' on Saturday morning. "We sold over 3,000 pints of Boston Lager over the weekend, with our teams picking up 70 empty kegs on Monday."A number of other local pubs also reported record sales, beating major events like the super bowl and St Patricks Day.Sean Hemenway, 28 from Boston said Scotland tops have been flying off the shelves at his classic football strip store. He said: "By 14:45 on game day, we had sold 67 units. That's a ton. Even USA strips were 29 off the pace."I've noticed a lot of Bostonians coming in to buy Scotland tops after meeting the fans out, and Americans don't pledge their allegiance for other countries like that."Once the Scots are gone it'll be a day of mourning. You guys are a part of Boston now."Steve Castigilone (left) said he has fallen in love with Scotland [BBC]But for locals, the visitors have brought much more to the city than a boost in sales. In the public park Boston Common on Wednesday a gathering of Bostonians was organised on social media as a chance to bring people together. Hundreds of people showed up.Those who attended swapped Irn Bru and Root Beer, while Scots and Americans alike chanted "No Scotland, No Party".One of those who attended was 30 year-old Steve Castigilone from Boston."I have completely fallen in love with Scottish people. They've made the cold-hearted Bostonians all warm up," he said."You have brought so much joy to our city and we don't ever want you to leave," he said. "I'm not a soccer fan, but I'm now a dedicated Scotland fan."Christian Harrington, 21, from the suburbs of Boston said: "This is a great sports city, but I think the energy has been low. If our sports teams aren't doing well the city is sad."But having you guys here has changed that. You came at such a good time, we needed it. I'm starting a petition to have it renamed from New England to New Scotland."Signs of appreciation are visible around the city [BBC]It's hard to put into words the warmth felt here for the Tartan Army.Just walking down the street in Boston wearing any type of Scotland merchandise will result in people waving, saying hi or shouting "good luck Scotland".Many of the people we've spoken to have put the connection down to the "warmth" and "energy" shown by the Tartan Army, as well as historic celtic connections. There have even been calls for what many people are calling the "cultural exchange" to become a regular occurrence and many Americans have pledged to visit Scotland in the near future. The state's governor signed an executive order to make Haggis legal again in Massachusetts- although it is still banned by federal law.Mayor Michelle Wu said she "feels lucky" the city was able to host two Scotland games."We hope that Tartan Army see Boston as their base for a long time to come," she added. And who knows? If the coming games go in Scotland's favour, the Tartan Army could end up back in Boston.Boston becomes 'mini-Scotland' before World Cup openerWhy are Scotland fans putting traffic cones on statues in Boston?Stag-do drag to World Cup - the rise of Scotland's other national anthem

Rory McIlroy explains the key to his strong US Open start in horrific conditions
Rory McIlroy was happy to shoot under par in the first round of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills considering his last experience at the Long Island venue.A one-under 69 – which included his first eagle at the event for nine years – was 11 strokes better than his opening effort here in 2018.That 80 was the joint-worst of his major career and led to him missing the cut, whereas despite a sloppy bogey-bogey finish to surrender the lead this time around, the Masters champion sat only one shot back towards the end a fog-delayed and windy first day.“With the conditions today, anything under par or anything around even par is a good score,” said the world No 2, who is seeking to win his first US Open title since making his major breakthrough in 2011.“It was a day to really just keep yourself in the tournament and not shoot yourself out of it, which is exactly what I did eight years ago here.“So I sort of went out with the mindset that pars were going to be good, and if you could pick up a couple of birdies here and there, that’s always a bonus. But really just minimising the mistakes. I did that for the most part today.“I didn’t feel like I hit two bad iron shots on the last two holes (but) I put myself in pretty difficult spots and wasn’t able to get it up and down.”Rory McIlroy did suffer a frustrating end to his round with back-to-back birdies (Getty)The highlight of McIlroy’s round was the 396-yard drive and a pitching wedge to 11 feet which demolished the 597-yard fifth hole, playing downwind, for his first US Open eagle since Erin Hills in 2017.It saw him become the first man to get to three-under, although two missed greens at the end of his round saw him fall back to one behind little-known 29-year-old American Sam Stevens, yet to win on the PGA Tour in 115 events.Amateur Ryder Cowan, who came through qualifying, and 2023 champion Wyndham Clark joined Stevens at the top of the leaderboard having started late in the afternoon along with Wolverhampton’s newly-crowned US PGA champion Aaron Rai, who had two birdies in his first four holes.McIlroy was paired with Ryder Cup colleagues Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Aberg and that team dynamic seemed to make a difference as their group was by far the best in terms of scoring to par.McIlroy battles the conditions but is right in contention (Getty)Aberg, who was two under through 12 holes, also finished one-under with the Englishman’s four birdies cancelled out by a quartet of bogeys for a level-par 70.World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, making his first attempt at completing the career grand slam, carded a two-over 72 which included four birdies, four bogeys and a double. The forecast 36mph wind gusts did not materialise later in the day but a steady breeze of around 25mph continued to make things difficult after play had been suspended for two hours after just 30 minutes due to poor visibility from fog.Players were recalled having initially been held for 30 minutes out on the course and play finally resumed at 9.05am local time (2.05pm BST), meaning later starters faced having to complete their rounds on Friday morning.

Could the Dolphins be getting new uniforms in 2027?
In 2013, the Miami Dolphins entered into a new era, redesigning their iconic logo and uniforms for a modern, refreshed look. The refresh brought about mixed reviews, with some fans upset at the color scheme and lack of a helmet on the dolphin in the new logo. But, things might be changing—again. According to Zach Cohen on X, who correctly predicted the 2026 uniform and logo changes made by the Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, and Baltimore Ravens, the Dolphins might be the latest team to refresh their uniforms in 2027. Per Cohen, Fanatics (the official manufacturer of the NFL) announced yesterday that they would be bringing back stitched jerseys across the entire NFL. However, two teams were left out of the initial jersey release—the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins. THEORY: Did Fanatics’ launch of stitched NFL jerseys for 30 teams reveal 2 teams planning new uniform redesigns in 2027?Connecting the drop with facts & rumors about why the Saints & Dolphins *could* be working on new primary uniforms! 🎥👇I transcribed my video below, but… https://t.co/4MNsDeByIipic.twitter.com/Z1s43ASPZY— Zach Cohen (@ZachCohenFB) June 18, 2026Regarding any new uniforms, Cohen states that teams must let manufacturers know ahead of time to get the proper materials and to prepare the new designs. Retailers are typically notified “as early as a year out”, in order to ensure that they aren’t left with a pile of outdated, unsold jerseys the following season. As such, if the Dolphins wanted to design new uniforms in 2027, now would be the time to to let Fanatics know—hence, no released “stitched” jerseys. Of course, it’s entirely possible that this is an oversight, and Fanatics simply forgot to release the jerseys for the Dolphins, as well as the Saints. But on the other hand, there has been a good amount of smoke regarding Miami’s likelihood of a uniform refresh. Before the start of the 2025 season, there was reported external and internal interest in a “NFL Rivalries” jersey for the Dolphins. These were soon released, much to the delight of fans. So, is this a continuation of those rumors, and will they materialize like before? Only time will tell. It’s worth noting that the NFL has a rule that teams must wait five years before completely changing their primary home and away uniforms, unless granted a special exception for relocation or ownership changes. However, the Dolphins last underwent a major refresh in 2013 (before a slight tweak in 2018), meaning they are free to undergo another uniform redesign, if so desired.Would you like to see the Dolphins don a new jersey in 2027? Let us know down below!

Thomas Tuchel complaint following England win prompts FIFA World Cup rule change
England boss Thomas Tuchel voiced his frustrations post-game with his inability to see his players during the national anthem -Credit:Marc Atkins, Getty ImagesEngland boss Thomas Tuchel was left so upset by the overwhelming presence of photographers during the national anthem prior to their win against Croatia on Wednesday that he called upon FIFA to make a change. The Three Lions made a stunning start to the World Cup in Arlington, Texas, after defeating Croatia 4-2 in the Group L opener. Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford found the back of the net for England, who will now turn their attention to Ghana, before wrapping up the group stage against Panama. There is widespread confidence that England could end its 60-year drought for an international trophy, and expectations have risen following an impressive opening. It was also a significant victory for Tuchel, but hours after his grievances to FIFA, the soccer governing body agreed to alter touchline positions, as per The Mirror US.FIFA World Cup referee under investigation for alleged 'white supremacy' gestureCristiano Ronaldo struggles as Portugal tie with DR Congo in World Cup opener -Credit:Etsuo Hara, Getty ImagesWednesday marked Tuchel's first World Cup match in charge of England, and he was surrounded by photographers as the national anthem played. With Tuchel being German, there was considerable curiosity as to whether he would sing England's national anthem.Tuchel ultimately didn't sing God Save The King, as photographers stood mere meters away from him during the anthem. Tuchel was frustrated by the excessive media presence and urged FIFA to make a change, as he couldn't even see his players."I have to tell you something, I am begging FIFA to change the position of the photographers in the national anthem because I could not see my team in the national anthem," he said. "I was waiting for this moment."It was a very, very special moment today, and I was standing in front of a wall of 50 photographers, half a meter away, and I could not see one single player. It ruined a little bit my experience."It is very emotional. When I was young and when I started coaching, this was too big to dream of this kind of occasion."To listen to the latest episode of 'All Out Soccer' - CLICK HEREPer The Times, FIFA has agreed to reposition coaching staff further along the touchline to ensure their sightlines to the players aren't obstructed by photographers during the national anthems. It's a straightforward adjustment, but a swift response from FIFA.Photographers were eager to capture Tuchel's every reaction during the anthem, yet he wasn't prepared to join in. Tuchel confessed to being too self-conscious, wary of the scrutiny or attention it might attract."I think we are not there yet. At the very end maybe," he said. "I am still a bit shy. I don't want to offend people and don't want to have the focus on that now."Tuchel will now turn his attention to preparing England for their game against Ghana, who secured a last-minute victory over Panama on Wednesday. Ghana are now level at the top of the group with England, while both Panama and Croatia remain on zero points.Victory against Ghana would seal England's spot in the Round of 32 and hand Tuchel the opportunity to rotate his squad against Panama. There remains plenty of work ahead, but it has been an ideal opening for England.

Daniel Ricciardo Admits He Was “Grateful” Red Bull Ended His F1 Career
Most drivers spend years after retirement insisting they left on their own terms. Daniel Ricciardo is doing something far more interesting: admitting he didn’t, and that he’s thankful for it.Speaking on Ford CEO Jim Farley‘s Drive podcast, the eight-time Grand Prix winner opened up about the final chapter of a 14-season, 257-start career that closed quietly after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, when Racing Bulls replaced him with Liam Lawson for the remainder of the season.“I broke my hand and it was such a nothing accident. I’d never really hurt myself racing all these years… I was like, okay, is this now a bit of a sign?”The hand injury happened at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, which broke the momentum of a comeback that had only just begun.Ricciardo had been fighting to prove he still belonged, and a low-speed practice shunt was the universe’s way of complicating that. He chose to ignore it.“I was like, no, there’s still unfinished business… I pushed through it and lasted another year in F1, ultimately got let go… I’d been let go twice in the last two years.”When the Decision Gets Made for YouThose final two years weren’t kind. He retained the Racing Bulls seat into 2024 but managed only three top-ten finishes across 18 races, while teammate Yuki Tsunoda recorded seven.A shot at the senior Red Bull seat, notionally available given Sergio Perez‘s poor run of form, never materialised. The paddock moved on without him.“In reflection, I was grateful that they made the decision for me.”It’s a striking thing to say. But Ricciardo backs it up with a level of self-awareness that explains exactly why he felt that way. He knew the edge had gone. He just couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud.“I knew I was probably done… Alonso, these guys are still in their 40s in F1 competing very highly, for whatever reason I lost a little bit of something, and it’s okay to admit it.”He retired from motorsport entirely in September 2025, aged 36, several months after his final F1 start. He now serves as a Ford ambassador, Ford being in its first year of a powertrain partnership with Red Bull, which makes Farley’s podcast a natural fit. The circle is tidy, if a little bittersweet. There’s a version of this story where Ricciardo clings on through 2025, chasing a seat he’d never get in a car that wouldn’t suit him, grinding down whatever goodwill remained. Instead, Red Bull made the call. He called it a relief. That’s probably the most honest thing an F1 driver has said about their own exit in years.

Minor league team forfeits Pride Night game after some players refuse to wear special jersey
YORK, Pa. (AP) — An independent minor league baseball team says it is forfeiting a game because some of its players refused to wear a special Pride Night jersey. The Atlantic League Pro Baseball’s York Revolution were planning to hold their 11th annual Pride Night event Thursday for a game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. But the Revolution announced the day of the game that it wouldn’t be played.“This decision was not reached lightly,” the Revolution announced in a statement. “Unfortunately, several of our players have refused to wear the scheduled Pride Night jersey and the club decided that hosting the event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with and playing the game.”The Revolution planned to continue with its Pride Night festivities as a “free and fun celebration of recognition and inclusion,” only with no game attached. Fans could redeem game tickets for another day, treating Thursday’s game as if it were a rainout. The Revolution said they were donating $10,000 to the Rainbow Rose Center “to support and further their work in making sure the York community is as inclusive as we strive to make WellSpan Park in York, Pennsylvania.”This announcement comes as Major League Baseball has run into some obstacles in its bid to promote LGBTQ+ inclusivity during Pride Month.Several San Francisco players added Bible verses to their themed caps or didn’t wear them at all during the Giants’ Pride Night on Friday. Two Los Angeles Dodgers players did not wear rainbow-themed caps with their teammates.MLB warned Giants players that writing on the caps is a violation of league policy, though the league added its issue wasn’t with the content of the respective messages but the act of modifying the cap at all.MLB’s response resulted in criticism from Vice President JD Vance and Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, both Republicans.

Where does Panthers' Bryce Young rank amongst NFL QBs in crunch time?
There are plenty of questions about quarterback Bryce Young's game going into his fourth year with the Carolina Panthers. Can he produce more than 200 passing yards per game consistently? Can he be more efficient targeting the short and intermediate parts of the field? Can he find a rhythm with any receivers outside of Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker? One thing you can't question, though, is Young's ability to perform in big moments. Time and time again, Young has answered the call with a great drive when Carolina needs points the most.If you go by EPA per pass attempt when trailing in the second half of games, Young ranks a respectable 12th in the NFL among starters—according to Warren Sharp:best QBs when losing in the 2nd half1. Matthew Stafford2. Jordan Love3. Bo Nix4. Josh Allen5. Caleb Williams6. Brock Purdy7. Patrick Mahomes8. Drake Maye9. Mac Jones10. Dak Prescott11. Baker Mayfield12. Bryce Young13. Tyler Shough14. Justin Fields15. Sam Darnold…— Warren Sharp (@SharpFootball) June 16, 202612th in this category is good—but when you narrow it down, Young's numbers are even better. The single most impressive thing that Young has done is producing game-winning drives. He's already up to 12 of those, more than any other quarterback since he entered the league in 2023.Young has accomplished all that without a distinguished play-caller, a Pro Bowl receiver, running back or tight end or a reliable offensive line. One has to think that Young can reach heights we haven't seen yet if the Panthers can only build up the supporting cast around him.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Where does Panthers' Bryce Young rank amongst NFL QBs in crunch time?

Colorado offensive line remains the biggest questions entering 2026
Colorado football enters 2026 with more depth and more optimism than a year ago, but the recurring concern is still the offensive line. Deion Sanders and his staff have rebuilt the roster in several spots, yet the unit up front still looks unsettled as summer workouts continue.Line battlesColorado brought in nine new linemen and returns six more from last season, which means the starting five could look very different by the time the opener arrives. At tackle, the leading options appear to be Bo Hughley, Taj White, Jayven Richardson, Leon Bell and freshman Xavier Payne.Guard is just as crowded, with Jayvon McFadden, Jose Soto, Yahya Attia and Chauncey Gooden all in the mix. At center, Demetrius Hunter brings Big 12 experience from Houston and may have an edge over Sean Kinney, but nothing has been locked in.That kind of uncertainty matters more on the offensive line than anywhere else. The group has to communicate quickly, build chemistry and handle different looks with little time for mistakes.Brennan Marion and Julian LewisThe timing is not ideal. Brennan Marion is installing a new offense, and Colorado is expected to hand the job to redshirt freshman Julian Lewis. That gives the Buffs a young quarterback learning a new system behind a line that still has to figure itself out.Marion's offense is built on tempo and movement, but it only works if the blocking is clean. If Colorado is still shuffling linemen in August, Lewis could be asked to play in a tougher setup than the staff wants.Early season testsThere is reason for hope as several of the linemen Colorado added have played in power conferences, and that experience should speed up the process. Still, the Buffs have road games against Georgia Tech, Northwestern and Baylor early in the season, and those matchups will show whether this group is ready.Colorado does have talent up front, but the question is whether they can turn that talent into a reliable group before the schedule starts getting really difficult.Follow James Carnes on Facebook, Instagram, and X.Contact/Follow us @BuffaloesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Colorado news, notes and opinions. This article originally appeared on Buffaloes Wire: Colorado football offensive line battles continue ahead of 2026

Jason Day pulls out of US Open with back problems
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Jason Day, the 2015 PGA champion and a two-time runner-up at the U.S. Open, withdrew Thursday from this year's Open at Shinnecock due to a bad back. The 38-year-old Australian was wincing in pain while warming up on the driving range. Opening on the back nine, he shot 7-over 42 and after making a triple bogey on No. 1, he climbed into a golf cart and left the course. Day opened the season with a tie for second at the American Express and finished 12th at the Masters, but has struggled since. He has finished second in the three majors he hasn't won — most recently in the British Open in 2023. His second-place finishes at the U.S. Open came in 2011 and 2013 and he was runner-up at Augusta in 2011. ___AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf

U.S. Open 2026: Shinnecock’s 10th and 13th holes showed why they’re two of most intriguing par 4s in American golf
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — The first piece of content with any real traction from the 2026 U.S. Open was posted by the championship’s X account at 6:56 a.m., and concerned an approach Harry Higgs attempted on Shinnecock Hills' 10th hole—his first of the day:What looked in the air like a prelude to a reasonable birdie attempt instead became a bogey after the ball spun back off the front of the green.Four holes later, on the 367-yard par-4 13th, he did it again, spinning a good-looking wedge off the green and making bogey.Higgs fought back through a fog delay and windy conditions to post a one-over 71, but after his round, the wedge on 10 was still at the front of his mind."I hit a great shot and just got smacked in the mouth to start," he said. "I got claps, then I got groans, and I think I heard some laughs, too. The difference between yesterday and today, especially early in the morning, was pretty stark in that the greens were a lot softer. Never in my wildest dreams did I think hitting a gap wedge from 100 yards would ever have spun back. That ball usually just skips forward and stops."Higgs and playing partner Chandler Phillips joked that they should do wellness checks on each other every few holes, and he could have used another on 13." I hit a gap wedge from 90 yards, and it landed just short and spun all the way off the green," he said. "Same thing. Usually, I can do a good enough job when you just basically baby it, it bounces once and just kind of stops. ... There's like two yards to land it in. And it has to have the right spin, and the right shape, and the right height. It's just, that's why they're so hard."Thirteen's a sneaky little hole," he added a moment later, " it would be damn near impossible, I think, to get it close to any flag. And then you should damn near fist pump when you hit it on the green."What Higgs experienced was just one way that the 10th and 13th holes, which might look easy on paper due to their modest length, but which played as the second- and sixth-most difficult holes, respectively, on a nasty day at Shinnecock. A few basic statistics taken late in the day on Thursday give the outline:10th hole, par-4 408 yards: 4.524 scoring average, 8 birdies, 57 bogeys or worse13th hole, par-4 367 yards: 4.308 scoring average, 10 birdies, 40 bogeys or worseIn the midst of a week where the topic of excessive distance and a pause in the possible implementation of a rollback dominated the pre-championship discussion, these holes aren't just difficult. They speak to a style of design that can still stare down professional golf's technological evolution and not just live to tell the tale, but come out decisively on top.Let's take a closer look at what makes them so potent even as shorter par 4s.No. 10On Thursday, the wind here was mainly off the right, and the tee shot presents you with an option: Carry it around 250 yards, and watch it roll to around 320 down a slope, leaving you with a short but difficult wedge, or laying back on top of the hill, which might present a slightly better angle, but also typically leaves a shot between 160 and 180 yards. For some, like Padraig Harrington, the choice was obvious."Cam [Young, his playing partner] laid up, and I think he had 180," he said. "I don't want that shot. I had 110. I'd definitely go for it. I just do not see it as a layup. ... I know it's not the easiest shot from down there, but I think it's easier than the 180-yard shot from the top of the hill."He might be understating the difficulty of the approach from down the hill. Early in the week, Adam Scott singled it out as one of the most treacherous shots on the course."The second shot into 10, I think, is fascinating, and it's mostly a wedge," he said. "It's not often that we get scared with a wedge."The scatter chart during the opening round showed a mostly divided strategy, but several of the apparent "lay-ups" were not intentional—just safer attempts to reach the downhill chute that got hung up on the upper shelf, particularly a section to the left where Rory McIlroy ended up en route to making par."I would probably prefer to be down the hill, especially today hitting a wedge," he said, "but the way we had that wind on Monday that comes out of the north where you get it straight down, I think it's almost better to be up on top because you can come in from a bit more of a height, and you're able to stop the ball a little bit quicker."Miles Russell is just 17 and still an amateur, and after a perfect drive—a "stinger finder”—he managed to stop a 96-yard wedge 14 feet from the hole and make par. Even he, though, found the approach unsettling."You just don't have that shot very often," he said. "It's so uphill and, and at that distance it's pretty unique. But you have to take the wedges when you can get them out here."Ben Silverman made a double bogey on 10 and spoke about his own dilemma off the tee."It's tempting to wanna stay up top of the hill on 10 to not deal with all the slopes, and you get more of a guaranteed lie," he said.Ultimately, he took the risk of going down the hill because he wanted the shorter distance, but he missed the fairway right, which is a fatal mistake."It got caught in the weeds, so then you're screwed," he said. "You have to hit the fairway on that hole pretty much unless you get a good lie and it kind of breaks left or something. You're going crazy uphill elevated to the green with maybe a 5-to-10 pace area of the green where you can actually hold the green. You need a good lie off the fairway."The stats bear him out—the combined greens in regulation stat from the left and right rough was 3-for-20. And once you miss the green, as Keith Mitchell found out, you're on the hook for a disaster. He flew his approach past the green, and the structure of the putting surface, which James Nicholas had depicted by making his hands into a steeple, means you have to be perfect; too long, and you'll roll off the front, too short, and it'll come straight back. Mitchell made the latter mistake and finished with a double bogey on his first hole of the day."If you miss the green and you miss in the wrong spot, it's almost impossible to get on," he said. "I remember saying at the green, 'I really have no idea if I can even get this ball on the green from off the back.' The elevation just drastically just sits up and then it goes down like 20 yards off the back."Again, the stats bear him out—the proximity of scrambling shots like chips and pitches from around the green was over 26 feet, making it the most difficult on the course.Jackson Herrington, runner-up at last year's U.S. Amateur and collegian at the University of Tenneseee, may have summed up the hole's inherent peril best after missing his approach and making bogey. "I know 10 seems pretty easy," he said. "I mean, you hit it 250 and it rolls all the way down to 320. But then, if you do do that, the pin's tucked over the right bunker, and even into that green, if you hit it down there, you gotta watch your spin."In short, there are pitfalls everywhere, from the first shot to the last, and as if the drive and approach weren't difficult enough, the shape of the green meant that it played as the hardest hole to putt from various distances, including 10-15 feet and inside five feet.No. 13The puzzle here seems simpler, because the hole is shorter at 367 yards with some general movement to the right, but while the most difficult shot is either the approach or the chip at 10, on 13 the unanimous vote was for the drive. With the wind almost directly in players' faces, and with an angled fairway, it played as the toughest hole on the course in accuracy, with only 54.39 percent of all players finding the fairway."It's straight into the wind off the left, and the fairway kind of slopes that way, so it's probably one of the tighter fairways on our golf course," Mitchell said. "And when the wind's in off the left for right-handed players, it's tough."Harrington made the argument that perhaps players were too conservative off the tee, and that landing in the fairway bunker 275 yards away wasn't the worst fate in the world. He used himself as an example—he missed the fairway badly to the right, but still hit to 15 feet and made par.Sam Burns adopted that strategy after discussing it with his caddie in the practice rounds."You don't have a lot of framing on that hole to shape it off the bunkers or grandstands or anything," he said. "It kind of just sits out there by itself. Yeah. In the practice round, I think we had like three wood, sand wedge, and today I hit like a driver, you know, pitching wedge or nine iron."Burns didn't mind going in the fairway bunker, but as it turned out, the wind was so strong that his drive went just 248 yards."We were laughing because we got up there, it was like 275 to the bunker," he said. "So I hit this chippy cut driver, and I looked back at my caddie, and I was like, 'I don't think that's within, like, 30 yards of the bunker.'"Ben Silverman was a victim of missing the fairway and knew that it would be tough to make par once he ended in the left rough."There's multiple mounds in the fairway that just send the ball sideways," he said, "so if you're not landing in the, in the right pocket, then it can just scream somewhere. The other difficult element of the tee shot, as Russell (who called it a "sneaky good hole") noted, is that it's elevated, meaning the ball stays in the air longer."You either have to hit it straight or fight the wind the way you want to," he said.Even from the fairway, though, the uphill approach isn't easy. Multiple players spoke of the small landing area for holding the green, including Ludvig Aberg, who was delighted to make one of the few birdies on the hole."The green is difficult," he said. "It's sloping quite dramatically left to right. Obviously with the wind kind of in off your left on the second shot, it presents a challenge."Russell noted the need to take spin off the approach—a lesson Higgs learned the hard way—and the stats showed that the only place where you could expect to hit the green more than half the time was from the side of the fairway.Nicholas might have suffered the most on 13, and his double bogey presented almost every element of difficulty the hole presents."It's straight into the fan today, and it's blowing 25 sustained out here. You've got to hit a wood, and you've got to keep it low. Put a spin on it, and it's going to go absolutely nowhere," he said of the tee shot. "I talked to my caddie off the tee, and we're like, we either take our risk here or take it going into the green...so I hit mini driver, hit a great shot, but it just kind of went up and soared right into the fescue. Thought I had a decent enough lie to go to the green, and I ended up getting it closed down, went way long left. At that point, you're just trying not to make triple. I tried to hit it in the bunker to give myself a chance to get up-and-down."He did, and avoided becoming the only triple of the day, but the damage was done. The only silver lining on 13 is that the green complex is slightly easier, meaning that proximity from around the hole and putting were slightly harder. This is the green where Phil Mickelson, frustrated in 2018, hit his own moving putt, but conditions were significantly less harsh on Thursday.• • •These two holes are rare creatures in American golf—short par 4s that nevertheless present a massive headache to professional golfers. It's true that the near-constant wind at Shinnecock gives them a boost in this regard, but in both cases, the design neuters modern advantages in unique ways. You can hit a big driver on 10, but the elevated, sloping green requires a deft touch with a risk of disaster, and 13 takes the driver completely out of play and puts an emphasis on finding the fairway.None of this is to suggest that it's possible for other courses to duplicate the time-defying black magic inherent to these holes, but only to heighten the appreciation of what makes them special, and to recognize the tactical and psychological challenge they'll pose to players who decimate holes of this length at the majority of stops on tour.

Photo by Vaughn Ridley - FIFA/FIFA via Getty ImagesWorld Cup stadium concessions have become a daily talking point. Almost every match seems to bring a new photo of food or drink that leaves fans questioning how prices reached this level. The Mercedes-Benz Arena has been one of the few exceptions to that mood. Elsewhere, complaints have focused on expensive items that supporters feel do not match the cost. This Thursday brought another example from Toronto Stadium. A brisket sandwich, crisps and a Coke were enough to restart the debate.Brisket sandwich and Coke price at Toronto Stadium sparks backlashPhoto by Dan Mullan/Getty ImagesThe latest criticism came after X account “Footy Scran” shared the price of a stadium meal in Toronto.According to the post, a brisket sandwich with crisps and a Coke cost $39.83 Canadian dollars, around $28.18 United States dollars. That price quickly drew anger from supporters online. Trump’s DOJ encourages Christian MLB players to sue over Pride ballcap controversy
Assistant U.S. Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who heads up the Civil Rights Division of President Donald Trump’s Justice Department, waded into the ongoing Major League Baseball (MLB) cap controversy, stoking outrage over the league’s reaction to a San Francisco Giants player displaying a Bible verse on his Pride Night ballcap. “It is illegal to treat employees differently” on the basis of “protected characteristics, and religion is one of those protected characteristics under our federal laws,” Dhillon said in an appearance on the right-wing Newsmax outlet, encouraging unnamed plaintiffs to pursue legal action through private litigation or through her “friend,” Andrea Jacobs, the head of Trump’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Related JD Vance says sports teams “don’t have to do” Pride Nights anymore because “Trump won” It was unclear who would be suing, as neither the Giants nor MLB have issued any sanctions against the San Francisco team’s starting pitcher, Laden Roupp nor against the other two players who added Bible verses to their caps that night. MLB did give them a warning, saying that regulations prohibit any “alterations, writing, or illustrations” on league uniforms. The players wore the altered hats last Friday night at the Giants’ Pride celebration at Oracle Park. Roupp’s bore the words “Gen 9:11-16” next to his cap’s rainbow-colored Giants team logo. Subscribe to our Newsletter today The verse follows God’s promise to never again flood the world for its sinful ways, adding, “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the Earth.” Following a bad outing on the mound — the Giants gave up five runs to the Chicago Cubs and lost by four — Roupp was unfazed over the controversy his hat inspired. “There’s no hate at all. It’s just what I stand for and what I stand in. I believe in God, and that’s me,” he said. “We live in a country where you’re welcome to believe what you want,” Roupp added. “There’s a freedom of speech and stuff like that, so that’s really all I have to say about that. I’m just thankful that God has put me in this situation and that I can go out and share his kingdom.” It was left to Giants management to acknowledge that the alterations were inappropriate. In a statement, the team said, “We understand that the choices by individual players have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community, and we are sorry for that.” In her Newsmax appearance, Assistant AG Dhillon said the MLB holds players like Roupp and the others to a different standard. “They’re treating people of faith and their faith-based messages on their hats differently than, say, employees who want to have pins that are LGBTQ or other types of messaging on their hats, and they tolerate that,” Dhillon claimed. “In other words, if they’re applying that uniform policy in a discriminatory manner, that definitely could be the basis of an employment discrimination claim by a private lawyer or by the EEOC,” she added. Dhillon’s stoking followed Vice President JD Vance doing the same two days before, when he responded to MLB’s warning with a cryptic post intended for his audience of one: “Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Mauricio Pochettino noncommittal on Christian Pulisic status for Australia game: ‘We’ll see’
Christian Pulisic has been following a ‘modified’ training schedule this week.Photograph: Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesUS men’s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino offered very little clarity on the status of US playmaker Christian Pulisic on Thursday, casting further doubt on his status ahead of the United States’ second’ group stage match against Australia on Friday afternoon.“I think as you know he was training individually all week,” Pochettino told reporters at his pre-match press conference. “Like always, I think tonight or the day before the game we have a meeting with our medical area, we will assess the whole group, and tomorrow we will communicate if we agree on something tonight. He is evolving, he is much better from Friday, we’ll see.”Related: A mercurial talent to a workhorse: who should replace Christian Pulisic if he misses the Australia game?Pulisic injured his calf in training last week and was pulled at half-time of the US’ 4-1 victory over Paraguay after aggravating the injury. He has been following what US Soccer has deemed a “modified training program” ever since, with US players and coaches offering little else in the way of clarity. The Milan midfielder was not seen with the full group in the portions of training open to media this week at the team’s training base in Irvine, California. Pulisic could be seen in the auxiliary gym next to the team’s training pitch on Monday and Tuesday, then emerged on to the field with trainers doing drills with a ball on Wednesday. After arriving in Seattle, Pulisic trained separately from the rest of the squad again on Thursday at the University of Washington’s soccer complex. He was briefly spotted on the training pitch during a brief huddle before the session began in earnest, sporting a wrap around his left calf. Pulisic then disappeared into a nearby training facility, accompanied by US performance staffers and was not seen again during the portion of training open to media. The tenor from Pulisic’s teammates has evolved through the week.“I know he really wants to be (on the field tomorrow),” said US midfielder Weston McKennie on Thursday. “And he’s doing everything that he can and the staff is doing everything that they can as well.”Brenden Aaronson, speaking on Wednesday, said similar. “We’re really hoping that Christian’s going to be back for the game, of course,” he said. “We know that he’s going to give us his all to get back into the team and be there for the game.On Tuesday, Tim Weah said “I think he’ll be ready for the game and ready to be with the team … I’m just praying to God that he feels 100% fit”“Christian will be ready, everyone. Let’s relax,” midfielder Tyler Adams said on Monday. “He’ll be fine.”Related: How a furiously contested friendly set the stage for USA v Australia at the World CupThe US could go several different routes in terms of replacing Pulisic. From adjusting his approach further back in the XI or rolling out an in-form Gio Reyna or deploying a player like Leeds United midfielder Brendan Aaronson. Undeniably, though, the loss of Pulisic against Australia could prove significant, given how well Pulisic played against Paraguay and how much of a central figure he is to the team.“When this type of thing happens it’s always painful,” said Pochettino. “But I think Christian is strong, with a great mentality and is doing a fantastic effort to try and be ready as soon as possible … He is doing a massive effort to be ready. For every single player who loves their country it is an amazing opportunity.”

Scotland won't shy away from shot at history - Robertson
[BBC]Captain Andy Robertson says his squad will not "shy away" from the chance to make history by being the first Scotland squad to make it out a group stage at a major tournament. One point against African champions Morocco would almost certainly do the job after their Group C opening win over Haiti. "I try to not think about it because we've got such a tough task ahead of us," said Robertson."I don't think any of the lads and the coaching staff shy away from us wanting to be the first team to be able to do that for our country."We know how difficult that is going to be, were out playing against one of the best teams in the world but we believe we can make any game difficult and if we can do that, put in our best performance, then I believe we can get what we want and hopefully be the ones to achieve history."Scotland's performance against the Boston Stadium was not barnstorming stuff despite the narrow victory. And the left-back knows an increased showing will be needed."I've always thought every game is a big opportunity," said Robertson."I think Saturday was a really good result and got us the three points which we needed and now we are going into the next game looking for the same."We know what we want to try and create and what we want to try and do. We know we're going to need more, so we're looking forward to it."

It’s no Super Bowl, but UFC Freedom 250 draws 7 million viewers on Paramount+
Credit: Amber Searls-Imagn ImagesDefenders of the UFC Freedom 250 were right when they said the MMA event was watched by as many people than an annual football bowl; they just got the game wrong. The June 14 White House-hosted UFC fight drew an impressive audience on Paramount+, averaging 7 million viewers in the United States, according to Nielsen streaming figures. That makes it the largest exclusive live stream in the platform’s history. The event also pulled in an additional 1.2 million in Latin America. For perspective, the first-ever UFC card on Fox averaged 5.7 million viewers in the U.S. and peaked at 8.8 million. That was the most-watched MMA event in U.S. history until Netflix’s Ronda Rousey-Gina Carano fight night, which averaged 9.3 million U.S. viewers and peaked at 11.6 million.Paramount+ says nearly 17 million people (15.26 million in the U.S.) watched at least one minute of the event. Viewing totals from other territories will be released next week. There’s no denying this is a big win for UFC, which is in the first year of a seven-year, $7.7-billion deal with Paramount. The fight card was much-maligned from the jump, seen by critics as a crass spectacle. But in the end, poor optics and bad weather were no match for the pomp and circumstance of seeing MMA fights on the South Lawn of the White House, even if the lasting cultural memory of the eventwill be a gross comment. On paper, all of this should be something to celebrate for CEO Dana White and proponents of the UFC White House event. However, many defenders, including White, invested a lot of time and energy in pumping up the notionthat the event posted Super Bowl-like numbers. That was patently absurd for obvious reasons, but since it became such a talking point, we wanted to make sure we provided a fair clarification.UFC Freedom 250 came close to matching a bowl in viewership: the 2025 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl between Penn State and Clemson, which averaged 7.6 million viewers. So, congrats to all on posting bowl-like numbers, just as you said. The post It’s no Super Bowl, but UFC Freedom 250 draws 7 million viewers on Paramount+ appeared first on Awful Announcing.
