(AP) — Visitors to Grand Canyon National Park are being warned about extreme temperatures that will hit the popular destination early next week after a recent increase in heat-related incidents in the inner canyon, including the deaths of three hikers.The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat watch at the Grand Canyon for midday Monday through Tuesday, forecasting temperatures that could reach or exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) at the low-elevation Phantom Ranch.People are “strongly advised” to avoid hiking in the middle of the day, the National Park Service said this week in a statement following a “recent influx of heat-related incidents.”An extreme heat watch was in effect June 16 when two hikers, ages 67 and 68, were found dead on the North Kaibab Trail, which the NPS describes as the most difficult of the major inner canyon trails. The service said they appeared to have succumbed to symptoms of heat-related illness. A third person, 72, died June 12 along the South Kaibab Trail after becoming ill from the heat, NPS said. Ever since taking over for Mike Fox as UNC's head baseball coach, Scott Forbes is continuing a tradition of college baseball excellence in Chapel Hill.Forbes has North Carolina in the College World Series for a second time in three seasons. Thanks to their 3-0 start in Omaha, the Diamond Heels are playing in the CWS Finals, breaking a 19-year drought.UNC's Championship Series started off on a sour note, though, losing 9-3 to Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon. North Carolina (53-13-1) scored three first-inning runs, leading many to believe the start of an offensive explosion, but bats disappeared and starting pitching struggled.Forbes made the right decision to start staff ace Jason DeCaro in Game 1. DeCaro played a major role in the Diamond Heels even playing for their first championship, going the distance in Game 2 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional.The Sooners got to DeCaro early, tagging him for seven runs in just under four innings. Deiten LaChance slugged a 2-run home run in the first inning, then tied things with a third-inning solo shot. Kyle Branch broke out of his Omaha slump, giving the Sooners a 2-run lead they never relinquished with a fourth-inning single, while small ball chased DeCaro.UNC left 10 men on base, creating flashbacks to the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Jake Schaffner was the only North Carolina hitter with multiple base knocks, while Gavin Gallaher and Colin Hynek were the only two batters to drive in runs.Sure, the loss is concerning because the Diamond Heels now face elimination. I’m just thankful that everybody got up from it because it was a pretty good collision, knocked the breath out of Jake. But I asked them when they came in, it was definitely not nerves with our guys. They were getting after it. I was impressed, honestly, how they jumped on us like that and we came right back. Obviously we gave up that 4-run inning, but that was just a tough play to make. They all caught it at the same time.”On channeling motivation from previous Game 1 losses:“Yeah of course. I’ve already done that. And it’s a weekend series. I just talked to them. I said, “you gotta forget this one, just like we forget all of them.” Win or losses, that’s being process-oriented. Don’t let outcomes be distractions. I told them before, you’re playing in a weekend series and we’re trying to do what we’ve done really well and win the series. Unfortunately, we lost Game 1 and that’s a stinker, but again, you gotta win two. We were in a really tough spot against a really good Southern Cal team. We found a way. I have a confidence in these guys and we’ll go about our business the same way we’ve been doing it all year.”On UNC's bats starting hot, cooling off as game progressed:“I thought he (Oklahoma pitcher Cord Rager) started, he’s got a good arm obviously. But early on, he couldn’t land that breaker very much and he couldn’t throw his changeup for a strike. He started throwing those, especially in some big 3-2 counts. The team, a lot of times that wins those 3-2 counts, ends up winning the game offensively. And it wasn’t like it was a really electric pitch, but he did enough to get you off the fastball. I felt like that was a good adjustment by his part and him being able to land that, we had to adjust and be able to fight two pitches instead of one.”On trust, checking in with his players before Game 2:"This team has come too far. I trust them. We’ve believed in what we believed in all year. And I’m gonna tell them tonight, we did it all year. So when we get back, we’ll shower, we’ll turn in our loops, we’ll have a postgame meal. And I want them to spend time with their families. We’ll meet right before we go to bed, but I’m not gonna go in there and try to pump them up. I don’t need to do that with this team. I’ll remind them go to bed and forget about it. Either way, if you win you gotta forget about it because sometimes, it can be even harder to get that second one when you win the first one, because you know what you’re gonna get from the team that lost that first one. So we’ll just keep doing exactly what we’ve been doing all year. And I’ll trust that process and I’ll trust our players.”On attacking Oklahoma's pitchers:“You wanna try to get a pitcher uncomfortable as much as you can. And when you have to move a guy from the wind-up to the stretch, that means you’re applying pressure and you have runners on base. So obviously, that was one of our big goals to find a way. But that’s most all pitchers. We challenge our pitchers to be just as good out the stretch as you are the windup because usually, you have to make your most meaningful pitches out of the stretch. But for sure, that’s what we were trying to do, scratch and claw. We couldn’t get that leadoff hitter on a ton, again they did, so that’s when you can apply that pressure.”On Tom Chmielewski and Cam Padgett's appearances giving the remainder of UNC's pitching staff much-needed rest:“Absoultely. I mean it’s all hands on deck. Even though it’s a weekend series, we did it at Clemson. We were tied and we went for it. Obviously, we have no choice but to go for it tomorrow. Everybody’s gonna be well-rested, Lynch will get us going and we’ll go from there. He will be ready to pitch.”On the need for UNC to make big pitches and Oklahoma's 2-strike approach:“I’m gonna have to watch and I’ll do that, I’ll watch some of his (DeCaro’s) pitches and Coach (Bryant) Gaines will do the same thing. Again, I thought he (DeCaro) looked really, really good and they’re (Oklahoma) hot. He made some offspeed mistakes and they made him pay for it. You always want to do a good job of executing those 2-strike pitches. Their approaches to get a swing off, that’s clear. They’re not spreading way out, just trying to move the baseball. More than 13,000 runners took part in the sold-out 2026 Citizens Queens 10K on Saturday morning in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.Hosted by New York Road Runners, the annual race sent participants on a 6.2-mile course through the park, passing iconic landmarks including the Unisphere and the Queens Museum.Now in its 13th year, the Citizens Queens 10K has become one of the borough's signature running events, drawing 11,600 adult athletes from across New York City and beyond.More than 1,000 children also participated in the accompanying Flushing Meadows Kids Run, which featured free races and dashes for young runners.The Citizens Queens 10K is the fourth of six races in the NYRR Five-Borough Series, showcasing New York Road Runners' commitment to the individuals and communities in each borough.For the third consecutive year, Citizens served as the title sponsor, hosting a post-race festival in Flushing Meadows Corona Park celebrating both runners and the Queens community. Perhaps Kyle Schwarber gave baseball fans a sneak peak at this year's Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park. The Philadelphia Phillies super-slugging lefty launched home runs in back-to-back at-bats on Saturday against the New York Mets — in the same inning.First he teed off a solo shot on Mets starter Freddy Peralta, taking the third pitch of the third inning, an 85-mph changeup, for a 456-foot ride, all the way over the right-center wall and into the second deck full of elated Phillies fans.Then, after Philadelphia chased Peralta later in the frame, Schwarber mashed the fourth pitch left-handed reliever Cionel Pérez tossed. The three-time All-Star, who seemingly gains more power with age, lifted a 97-mph sinker to almost the same spot he dropped off the other long ball, with the three-run shot sailing 457 feet.Schwarber's third-inning dingers danced a combined 913 feet across the Bank. They were the 33-year-old’s 26th and 27th homers on the year. And they drove in a total of four runs, half of the Phillies’ scoring output in the frame.By the end of the third, Philadelphia was up 11-0 on the NL East rival Mets.An equally tantalizing subplot started to unfold in that inning: Bryce Harper’s campaign for the cycle. Earlier, Harper opened the scoring gates on Saturday, rocketing a solo home run — his 16th long ball of the year — to right field. During the circus of the third inning, he lashed a double and a single. All that was left was the elusive triple, which he promptly secured in his next at-bat.That came in the fifth inning, when he shot a liner into the left-center gap and raced around the bases to cap the 11th cycle in Phillies history.This story is being updated.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber launched two long home runs in the Philadelphia Phillies' eight-run third inning against the New York Mets on Saturday night and Bryce Harper became the 11th player in franchise history to hit for the cycle.Schwarber led off the Phillies' huge inning with a solo homer off Mets starter Freddy Peralta, sending the ball 456 feet into the second deck in right field.Later in the inning, Schwarber hit a three-run shot off Cionel Perez into nearly the same spot, 457 feet away for his major league-leading 27th home run of the season.Schwarber is the 67th player in major league history to hit two home runs in an inning and the second this season, joining Houston’s Yordan Alvarez, who accomplished the feat on June 12. He's the fourth Phillies player to do so, along with Trea Turner (Aug. 19, 2023), Von Hayes (June 11, 1985) and Andy Seminick (June 2, 1949).Harper finished his first career cycle by the fifth inning. He hit a solo home run in the first, his 16th of the season. He doubled and scored on an error in the third, then singled after Schwarber’s second home run.In the fifth, he lined a ball into the gap in left-center field and motored around to third base for a two-run triple. Stirling stayed strong and even found a way to escape the choke after Cutelaba got him down to the ground.Back on the feet, Stirling reset and started using a lead jab to snap off some punches before throwing a knee that glanced off Cutelaba’s head. With less than a minute in the round, Stirling blasted Cutelaba with a stiff body shot that backed him up, although “The Hulk” was quick to fire back with a slick shot of his ownAs the second round got underway, Stirling was once again trying to maintain his reach advantage with Cutelaba looking to close the distance. Stirling cracked him with a powerful right hand before looking for a takedown and Cutelaba countered with a kimura attempt.Cutelaba used the submission to eventually get back to his feet but as he attempted a takedown of his own, Stirling was quick to reverse and separate to begin striking again.Another brief grappling exchange led to Stirling trapping Cutelaba against the cage and he just stood up before unloading a barrage of punches. Stirling eventually hammered him with some gruesome elbow strikes as well and Cutelaba was just absorbing punishment as the referee finally saw enough to stop the contest.Stirling is now 10-0 in his career with a perfect 5-0 record in the UFC as he continues climbing towards ranked competition in the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

Arrighetti’s first pitch of the game was drilled out to right center for a solo homer by Travis Bazzana to give the Guardians a 1-0 lead. Houston tied the game in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back singles by Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve to open the frame gave the Astros runners on 1st & 2nd with no outs. Yainer Diaz followed with an RBI single scoring Paredes, with Altuve advancing to third. Houston could do no more damage that inning, however, as Cam Smith flew to shallow left and both Jake Meyers and Brice Matthews struck out to end the inning. Missing out on that kind of opportunity to have a big inning would immediately come back to haunt the Astros. In the top of the 3rd, Kyle Manzardo hit a 2-run homer of a 91.6 MPH four-seam fastball from Arrighetti to give the Guardians a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 5th, Bazzana would get Arrighetti again. This time, Bazzana hit a 3-run homer to right center to give Cleveland a 6-1 lead. Arrighetti would pitch a 1-2-3 6th inning, and his final line would be 6 IP, 6 ER, 6H, 0BB, 8K, 3HR.In the 7th, the Guardians would add 2 more runs on 4 straight singles off Astros reliever Nate Pearson.Meanwhile, Guardians starter Joey Cantillo (W, 6-3), would retire 20 of the next 22 Astros batters following Diaz’ RBI single in the 2nd. He tossed 8 innings of 1 run ball while allowing 4 hits, one walk and striking out 9.With the loss, the Astros fall to 36-42, and the Guardians improve to 41-36Astros SP Kai-Wei Teng (3-6, 4.32 ERA) will oppose the Guardians’ Slade Cecconi (3-5, 4.60 ERA) in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 1:10PM CT.

HOUSTON (AP) — Rookie Travis Bazzana set career highs with four hits, two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored Saturday night, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Houston Astros 8-1.Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run homer in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie, and tacked on an RBI single in the seventh.Bazzana took Spencer Arrighetti deep on the first pitch of the game for his second leadoff homer, singled in the third inning and then hit a three-run homer off Arrighetti in the fifth. Bazzana added an RBI single in the seventh.The first overall pick in the 2024 draft, who made his Major League debut April 28, is the second Guardians’ rookie to record a four-hit game and a two-homer game this season. Chase DeLauter hit two home runs at Seattle on March 26 and had four hits against the Athletics on May 1.Patrick Bailey added three hits and two runs scored for the Guardians.Joey Cantillo (6-3) pitched a career-high tying eight innings and allowed one run and four hits while matching a season high with nine strikeouts. The 26-year-old left-hander gave up one hit after the second inning.Arrighetti (7-3) allowed a season-high six runs and six hits over six innings with eight strikeouts. "It would be special," said Scheffler. "This tournament means so much to me. All I can do is go out there and try and execute. I have an opportunity to go out there and have a great round and give myself a chance to win the tournament."We've been battling hard for a few days and I did a good job of keeping myself in the tournament. I'll need a really nice round if I'm going to try and catch Wyndham."Scheffler's score was deceptively good on a day when gusting winds reached 40mph and ensured that the greens became firmer and even more perilous.Only one other player, Argentina's Emiliano Grillo - who moved to level par for the championship after signing for a three-under 67 - broke the par score of 70.It took one hour and 50 minutes for the first birdie to be registered in the third round, one of only two in 70 combined holes played by the field over the opening two hours.Scheffler's performance was all the more impressive given he bogeyed the first two holes and his resurgence arrived entirely on the harder back nine. A birdie on the 10th provided some impetus but his chip-in on the 14th followed by an outpouring of emotion signalled a shift in momentum. Further birdies at the 15th and 16th helped him play the final nine holes in 32 shots, matching the lowest score of the week.But Clark's lead was barely threatened. Unheralded American Stevens briefly got within two shots at four under par but he was one of several players whose challenge faded on the back nine.Rory McIlroy was another. The Northern Irishman had a hat-trick of birdies from the fifth, one of which was a sensational 66-foot putt, but five bogeys in his closing nine holes derailed his title hopes.Fitzpatrick's hopes of adding to his 2022 US Open triumph were all but sunk by a ruinous run of three successive bogeys to start his round. The normally unflappable Yorkshireman, playing in the final group with Clark, had started four back at three under but by the final hole his frustration was evident after he hacked out of deep rough and then overhit a chip. It led to a fifth bogey of the round as he finished eight off the pace.But even those at one under know that they will need to shoot low and hope Clark makes mistakes.Perhaps they will take inspiration from the last US Open held at Shinnecock Hills when England's Fleetwood shot a 63 in 2018's final round as he came from six back to finish one behind champion Brooks Koepka.

Jun. 20—Five days after returning from Las Vegas for a season opener against Purdue, Gonzaga will reportedly host New Mexico State on Nov. 7 in what will potentially serve as the team's home opener at McCarthey Athletic Center.The New Mexico State matchup, which was reported Friday night by Bracketeer.com's Rocco Miller, also becomes the first known home game on Gonzaga's 2026-27 schedule.Provided the Zags don't schedule another opponent between their Nov. 2 opener against the Boilermakers at T-Mobile Arena and the New Mexico State matchup, it will also double as the team's home opener. As of now, the team's next known game is a Nov. 14 matchup against LSU at Numerica Veterans Arena.Gonzaga has a strong track record when it comes to home openers, picking up its 36th straight victory last year with a 98-43 victory over Texas Southern.The Zags and Aggies have played just one other time, meeting on Dec. 7, 2013, at the Kennel. Three months before winning its third consecutive Western Athletic Conference championship, NMSU held Gonzaga to a one-point lead at halftime before the Zags outscored the Aggies by 11 in the second half to win 80-68.Sam Dower led the Zags with 22 points while Kevin Pangos added 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. WAC Player of the Year Daniel Mullings paced NMSU with 17 points while 7-foot-5 Aggies center Sim Bhullar had six points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.Under third-year coach Jason Hooten, the Aggies finished 16-16 overall last season with an 8-12 mark in Conference USA play. Jun. 20—Matthew Gleeson stood out in the sea of red, white and blue-clad soccer fans who gathered in the Gesa Pavilion Friday afternoon to watch the U.S. men's national team play their second match of the World Cup.Gleeson, an Australian native who holds dual U.S.-Australian citizenship, was one of the few attendees among nearly 5,000 who were sporting a yellow and green jersey with "Australia" stitched down the side during the highly anticipated match between the two countries.While he considered repping jerseys from both countries, Gleeson said he's learned to "always stay with your roots.""I was born and raised in Australia, but I was very proud of how both teams performed, and, you know, I think the better team won," Gleeson said. "And I'm honorable enough to respect and acknowledge that."The 2-0 victory sent the men's national team to the next round of the tournament, and the team clinched the top spot in their group Friday evening with Paraguay's against Turkey. As for Australia, the Soccerroos would guarantee a trip to the knockout round with a draw and could still advance with a loss.While Gleeson remains hopeful Australia will advance, too, he said it was a "privilege" to see both squads square off on Friday."A shame there wasn't a couple of goals for Australia, as well," Gleeson said. "But like I said, I'm an honest man, and I think that the better team won."Jonathan Myers was among the U.S. fans who celebrated as the ref whistled the match over on Friday. Myers, who was in attendance in Inglewood, California, last week as the U.S. national team opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Paraguay, said the watch party had an "awesome setup.""I just love that they did this, and, you know, it's fun to get all of the fans together and everyone having a little patriotism," Myers said.While the U.S. has never won a World Cup, and has only advanced past the round of 16 once since 1930, Myers said this year's squad is "totally different than the U.S. in the past.""After the first game, it was like 'All right, they're a real team this year,' " Myers said. "And I think making a quarterfinal is a pretty good goal for them."Zach Brown said while he would have liked to see the team control the ball a little bit more on Friday, the U.S. played a "solid game.""They're really tight-knit, and the coach has been doing really well to get them working together," Brown said.Like Myers, Brown said he has grown more optimistic that the squad could advance in the tournament, especially if injured star Christian Pulisic returns from the left calf injury that kept him out of Friday's match."It's going to open up creativity a lot more," Brown said. The U.S. soccer fan was decked head to toe in red, white and blue clothing, complete with the arm and leg bands he bought online and a USA visor. The outfit, he said, earned him "lots of compliments.""Especially for my flowing, lovely locks," he said.The Friday watch party featured food trucks, water stations, and a bit of shade for fans as they watched the match on large video boards at the pavilion. The event, part of the festivities for the "summer of soccer," was the first of two planned for the tournament. Tickets to the next watch party for the World Cup final on July 19, which cost $5 per person, will go online soon.Many of the fans in attendance on Friday said they planned to come to the next watch party, too."It's a great party. Jun. 20—After a disheartening freshman season at the University of Washington tested Jeff Brown's love for basketball, he was lured back to Spokane to play for Gonzaga.At the time (1990), if anybody had tried to call Spokane "Hooptown USA," it would have evoked quizzical looks.Yet by the time Brown was done at GU, he was MVP of the West Coast Conference and had led the Zags to a 22-8 record and their first postseason tournament appearance. That success set in place a foundational cornerstone for a program that would become a national sports phenomenon.The swelling fanbase during Gonzaga's streak of success (27 consecutive NCAA Tournament bids) contributed to Hoopfest becoming the world's largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament — generating the self-applied title of Hooptown USA.His role in the early stages of regional basketball fanaticism leads to Brown's induction into the Hooptown USA Hall of Fame this week. It's a fine honor for a player who was on the verge of giving up the game before ever scoring a point for the Zags.Brown left Mead High as the Washington Class AAA State Player of the Year (1989), signing with Husky coach Andy Russo.But before Brown even got to UW, the Huskies replaced Russo with Lynn Nance. Under Nance, the freshman scored one field goal in 37 minutes of play for the ninth-place team in the Pac-10 Conference."It was a really rough freshman year," Brown said in a recent interview. "I didn't know if this was indicative of college basketball, but I wasn't sure that college basketball and I would be a long-term (relationship)."Former Mead High teammate Jarrod Davis, redshirting at GU, bumped into Brown's parents, who told him how unhappy Jeff was at UW. Unhappy, in fact, to the point that he was considering giving up the game."I said, are you freaking kidding me, get over here to Gonzaga," Davis recalled his pitch to Brown. "We're going to be good; we have this whole redshirt team (sitting out) ... we just need one piece."Davis could see how Brown's relationship with the game had changed. "He had lost it a little bit, mentally, he was burned out and tired of the dudes on the team and the grind of it. Coming to Gonzaga was a whole newfound love for playing again."Brown would have to sit out a redshirt season because of transfer rules that now seem so archaic.Davis had talked up his friend as such a great scorer that expectations were enormous when Brown joined the Zags for an offseason pick-up game. "I told (Jamie) Dudley and (Geoff) Goss and Stan (Matt Stanford) that this guy's gonna change it for us."On the court that first day, Brown was ordinary.Davis: "I remember Dudley coming up and he's like, 'This guy is the savior? He's terrible.' "Dudley, a point guard, recalled extenuating circumstances that he learned later from Brown. "He had been horseback riding with his girlfriend all morning, which, in itself, is ridiculous and hilarious, but his legs weren't great."Brown's initial performance? "It reduced expectations, that's for sure," Dudley said.When reminded that his new teammates questioned his athleticism, Brown responded "Rightfully so."Brown's apparent lack of conspicuous physicality surely caused some opponents over the years to underestimate his threat. He was listed at 6-9, but his athleticism was based in exceptional hand-eye coordination and understanding of the game, rather than the more obvious run-and-jump abilities."I was not going to beat anybody with my pure quickness or physical jump, right?" Brown said. "I was blessed with some size and some pretty good hand skills, and lot of credit would go back to my high school coach, Jim Preston. He played small-college basketball and had a huge knack for scoring."Brown was so efficient that his points accumulated quietly, like passive income, and it was only after the game that one would see he had been the leading scorer with 20 or more. In his three seasons, each ending in his being named all-conference, he averaged 17.9, 16.7 and 21.0 points.He was not without liabilities on the court. "Brown literally does not know what defense is; we still make fun of him about that to this day," Dudley said. "He was a scorer."Underestimating Brown was a mistake that came with costs. A high scholastic achiever, Brown wanted to play for Stanford and hoped to gain the attention of coach Mike Montgomery.Montgomery eventually told him he wasn't athletic enough.Fast-forward to the Zags' win over Stanford in the 1994 NIT: Brown owned the Cardinal, scoring 27 points, including three 3-pointers. "In retrospect, we probably made a mistake," Montgomery said.Brown was asked if any of the latter-day Zags, among those who arrived with showy credentials, played with similar court characteristics; he answered with a name that many would understand if they had seen Brown play."Obviously, he's much better than I was, but (Drew) Timme had very good footwork and very good hand skills," Brown said. People at times also questioned Timme's athleticism.Dudley agreed with Brown's pre-Timme assessment: "(Brown) couldn't rebound, he couldn't defend, but he was a lot like Timme in that way — incredibly crafty and inventive."Timme became GU's all-time leading scorer and a second-team All-American, obviously playing against higher-quality opposition than Brown, but his senior scoring average of 21.2 was only slightly higher than Brown's 21.0.Davis saw another comparison between Brown and Timme that some might overlook."The other thing that people don't know about Brownie, unless you really know him: He's the nicest guy on the planet, right?" Davis said. "But he's one of the biggest competitors there is. He'll kill you if he has to."Smart, efficient, sneaky-tough, Brown so perfectly fit coach Dan Fitzgerald's attack. It was a beautiful match. Brown's old teammates kid that a valid life goal would be to find somebody who loves you the way Fitzgerald loved Brown.Davis tells the story that one time he was hit on the back of the head by a misfired Brown pass. Fitzgerald pulled Davis from the game and chewed him out for Brown's mistake.Brown played internationally for a few years and returned to Spokane in his mid-20s without a clear career path. As an Academic All-American and the National Scholar-Athlete of the year in 1994, he had many options."In a large part, I owe my career to Dudley taking a chance on me," Brown said.His old teammate was in San Diego at the time, and gave Brown an entry to software sales. "No matter what Jeff did, he was going to be successful: he's smart, he's driven, likable," Dudley said. "But he had zero idea what software was."As Dudley predicted, Brown caught on quickly. "I've been in technology the last 25 or 30 years, and I'm currently in the process of co-founding an AI company," Brown said.Apparently having successfully won over his girlfriend with superior equestrian skills, Brown and his wife just celebrated their 26th anniversary. They have two sons.And they're all huge Zag fans."Like anyone that played there, I feel like we all have a small part in building the foundation. I think my crew, in that early '90s era, were uber competitive, Type A personalities."More specifically, Davis pinpoints the importance of Brown's contributions, which might be unrecognized by current GU fans."If Jeff Brown does not come to Gonzaga, they don't go to the NIT, they don't get (Matt) Santangelo, (Casey) Calvary, any of those guys," Davis said. "He's the one, singular guy you can point to."Davis acknowledged the huge influences of Mark Few and staff along the way, and the great legacy of John Stockton in the early '80s, and, of course, the dozens of sensational players on the teams ever since. But ..."I'd go to the mat on this, in terms of the true turning point of that program," Davis said. "I don't believe there's anyone bigger than Jeff Brown."

Travis Bazzana recorded his first career four-hit game and first multi-homer game while Joey Cantillo worked a career-high-tying eight innings as the visiting Cleveland Guardians rolled to an 8-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday, June 20.Bazzana finished 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs — also a single-game best. The former first overall draft pick homered in the first and fifth innings and carried the offense alongside Kyle Manzardo, who finished 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.Cantillo (6-3) logged more than six innings for the first time this season en route to his third quality start. Cantillo allowed one run on four hits and struck out a season-high-tying nine batters.Bazzana started the scoring with haste, drilling the first pitch of the game from Astros right-hander Spencer Arrighetti (7-3) out to right-center field. On weekends like this one, he's one of the fastest breaststrokers in the United States.This week, the former Hoosier broke two American records at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis. The swim made him the fourth-fastest performer in history and left him just one-hundredth of a second shy of becoming the first American to break the 58-second barrier."Both were good," Mathias said. "I didn't have any expectations. Just go for it."Instead of focusing on what he narrowly missed, Mathias is looking at what comes next."I think just missing it by a little bit is going to keep us hungry for more," Mathias said. "I wouldn't ask for it any other way. A return to elite swimming — and American records in breaststroke — wasn't part of the plan.For most of his career, he specialized in middle-distance butterfly. During his fifth season at IU, he shifted his focus to sprint freestyle and breaststroke, earning NCAA All-America honors before stepping away from competition after the 2023 NCAA Championships to become the Hoosiers' director of operations.Two years later, Mathias and Indiana’s coaching staff watched the results of the 2025 U.S. Swimming Trials at the IU Natatorium and came to the same conclusion: He could compete with the nation’s best. Mathias returned to training. Just eight weeks later, he earned a spot on the U.S. national team by swimming 26.76 seconds in the 50-meter breaststroke at the U.S. National Championships in Irvine, California, qualifying for the Pan Pacific Championships.Now, Mathias is balancing international competition with the day-to-day responsibilities of helping run one of the country's premier college swimming programs."It's been unique," Mathias said. "I'm kind of riding a fine line between the two right now. Trying to figure that out still."The balancing act becomes a little easier during the summer, when Indiana's workload slows, giving him more time to train. But after a week that included two American records, his focus quickly shifts back to the office."Hit a hard reset this next week," Mathias said. "Get back in the office, push some paper and get ready for the rest of the summer."As for what's next in the pool, Mathias isn't overcomplicating it."Let's keep having fun," Mathias said.
