Lions safeties coach updates Kerby Joseph's practice regimen
With an abundance of caution due to his problematic and complicated knee injury history over the past year, the Detroit Lions elected to withhold Pro Bowl safety Kerby Joseph from organized team workouts this spring to give the star defender as much rest as possible before next season.Despite the franchise's protective measures, Lions safeties coach Jim O'Neil gave a somewhat grim update on the former Illinois Fighting Illini, saying he's not sure when Joseph will return to the practice field or how much he'll be able to participate in training camp this summer."I don’t know," O'Neil said before the Lions' final practice of minicamp on Wednesday, June 17. "I know he’s doing everything he can to get back as soon as he can. Dan (Campbell) and the medical staff have a plan, so whatever that plan is, that’s how we’ll go forward, and we’ll execute."The Lions' interception leader during each of the past four seasons missed the final 11 games last season due to a cartilage condition in his knee that he indicated is potentially career-threatening.When asked if Joseph needs to participate in the team's organized practices this summer, O'Neill said that he absolutely needs to practice in some capacity, while adding that it's unfeasible to expect anyone to immediately return to All-Pro status after a year off from action."Maybe not every day, but you need to practice," O'Neil said. "You can’t take a year off of football and expect to go play at an All-Pro level. And that’s everybody at every position. I mean, you need to practice to get the timing, to have the chemistry. I mean, we've got a lot of new guys, so absolutely, he needs to practice. Does he need to do it every day? Probably not."Lions safeties coach Jim O'Neil on whether Kerby needs to practice: "You can't take a year off football and expect to go play at an All-Pro level. Does he need to do it every day? Probably not.""If Kerby or BB are healthy enough to practice, those are our starting safeties." pic.twitter.com/IoNe6aTxxO— Will Burchfield (@burchie_kid) June 17, 2026O'Neil said Joseph and safety Brian Branch, who's expected to start camp on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon, will be the Lions' expected starters if the duo can practice at full capacity prior to the 2026-27 season."If Kerby or Brian Branch is healthy enough to practice, those are our starting safeties."As the Lions look to restore their dominance in both the NFC North and the league-wide picture, Joseph's status entering the season will be one of the franchise's top priorities over the coming weeks. For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like. World Cup Day 10: Super sub Undav, Curacao make history
World Cup Day 10: Super sub Undav, Curacao make historyAnother action-packed day of the FIFA World Cup saw the Netherlands and Japan run riot, and Curacao make history. We’ve recapped all the happenings from matchday 10, including what you may have missed overnight.Houston, we have a problem: Sweden smashed by five-star NetherlandsSweden headed to Houston with confidence after thrashing Tunisia 5-1 in their opener, but their clash against the Netherlands turned into a nightmare for Graham Potter’s side. The Dutch all but booked their place in the knockout rounds after an emphatic 5-1 win in Group F. Ronald Koeman’s call to bring in Brian Brobbey was a surprise, but it was a selection justified as the Sunderland striker shone.Brobbey scored twice inside the opening 17 minutes for the Netherlands, before Cody Gakpo added a brace of his own to make it 4-0 inside an hour. Anthony Elanga pulled a goal back for Sweden moments later, but it was Dutch delight when substitute Crysencio Summerville, the unfortunate omission for Brobbey, netted for the second straight game.Three-time runners-up without ever winning the World Cup, the Dutch were flying under the radar before this tournament. Perhaps, not for much longer.Super sub Undav delivers again for BrightonDeniz Undav has certainly put his hand up for more minutes for Germany. After scoring once and providing two assists off the bench against Curacao, Undav was at it again to rescue the Germans on Saturday night.Germany trailed the Ivory Coast, until Undav’s introduction on the hour. He turned in Nadiem Amiri’s cross to equalise just eight minutes after his introduction, before a sharp touch and finish secured three points for Germany in stoppage time.Undav’s impact booked Germany a place in the knockout rounds and saw the forward equal the record for most goal involvements as a substitute at a single World Cup tournament (5). He’s played only 56 minutes.Curacao make history with first-ever World Cup pointCuracao have already made history this summer as the smallest ever nation to feature at a World Cup, with the tiny Caribbean island holding a population of just over 150,000 people. After a 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opener, some sneered that their participation was a sign of the devalued competition brought about by an expanded 48-team tournament.Against Ecuador, they proved that wrong. Curacao followed Cape Verde’s example with one of the upsets of the tournament after holding the South American side to a goalless draw.Ecuador are no traditional powerhouse, but this is a team that finished above Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia in qualification, with only Argentina outperforming them in South America’s qualification pool.A goalkeeping masterclass from Eloy Room helped Curacao to a historic result, with his 15 saves equalling the World Cup record for a single game that did not go into extra time.Tunisia’s torrid tournament ends early after Japan humblingTunisia sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi following the side’s 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening World Cup fixture. The experienced Herve Renard was brought in as a desperate roll of the dice, but it has not made much difference. The North African nation was humbled 4-0 by Japan in their second fixture as a nightmare World Cup campaign continued.Their tournament is already over, with a final fixture against the Netherlands to be played for pride only. Given how both teams have fared so far, another thumping might be on the cards.Read – How FIFA’s new World Cup format manufactures dead rubbersSee more – World Cup Day 9: Scotland fume, historic red card, Ancelotti under fireFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

Top Kentucky Football transfer Lance Heard had minor spring procedure
Tennessee offensive lineman Lance Heard (53) speaks to the media during football media day, in Knoxville, Tennessee, July 29, 2025. | Caitie McMekin/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images There is an old saying that there is no such thing as a minor procedure when it happens to you. But that’s exactly what happened over the spring football season as top transfer Lance Heard had surgery on an undisclosed injury that was deemed “minor.”While Kentucky did not release what exactly the big left tackle had surgery on, anytime you are down your starting left tackle over Spring is not ideal. The good news is Heard has plenty of SEC experience, starting at LSU before transferring to Tennessee. The biggest thing for an offensive line is reps, but offensive coordinator Joe Sloan told KSR he was happy with what he was seeing.“You’re starting to see them work really well together, and they have an opportunity to be a strength of our team.” If that comes to fruition, Kentucky will have a really good year. As for the fans, expect a different style this year in Kroger Field.Kentucky’s offense will be differentUnder Mark Stoops, the calling card became a physical offensive line, a punishing run scheme, and a ball control style. That offense will be very different this year, not because of a shift away from the run game, but because there will be a lot more chances taken.Sometimes, that is a good thing, and other times it causes turnovers. Will Stein said he never called a play he didn’t think would score a touchdown. That aggressive style is what will define Stein’s time in Lexington. He chose a defensive coordinator known for dialing up the blitz. He has gone after nearly all the top recruits, and he isn’t backing down from saying he expects to be the best head coach in the country. Will it work? I don’t know, but I do know it will look different than what Mark Stoops was putting out. But it all depends on the health of the key players Stein brought in, and that starts with a healthy offensive line.

Countdown to Kickoff: Sarkisian will rotate playmakers more in 2026
We are just 77 days from toe meeting leather in Austin and the Longhorns “title or bust” season gets underway. For this “Prediction Saturday,” I wanted to take a step back from the player-centric predictions and turn to the head coach. Steve Sarkisian has a habit of “playing his guys” and not rotating often, particularly at RB and WR. I expect that to change this season. From Bijan Robinson to Johnathon Brooks to Tre Wisner, Sarkisian has often leaned on one running back. He’s used Jaydon Blue, Keilan Robinson and Roschon Johnson effectively but the gap between the RB1 and others has been sizable. This season, I expect Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers to largely split carries, with Derrek Cooper getting his fair share as the season goes on. I could see a 40/40/20 carry split between the three running backs. CJ Baxter+Tre Wisner ➡️ Hollywood Smothers+Raleek Brown🐂I see the vision now Sark/TexasBrown (5-9, 195): 1141 yards/6.1 YPCSmothers (5-11, 195): 939 yds/5.9 YPCBoth CAN be Top 10 NFL Draft RBs pic.twitter.com/8qmyduwSZI— Clint Goss (@NFLDraftDome) May 7, 2026For the WRs, I believe there is just too much talent at this position not to rotate. Obviously, Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley will lead the way and get the majority of the snaps. However, Sterling Berkhalter is making waves, Daylan McCutcheon seems to have taken a step forward and Kaliq Lockett, despite the injury, still is viewed highly. The backups are going to be able to keep the drop-off from the starters minimal. You add in Ryan Niblett and Jermaine Bishop Jr., you have eight players that are almost too good to keep off the field. It’ll be interesting to see the breakdown of the snaps but I expect it to be more equitable than year’s past. The Texas WR room really has potential to be one of the best of all time 🤘 pic.twitter.com/3rOMU5ph5j— John Burrows (@JohnBurrowsCFB) April 20, 2026It’s impossible to know exactly who Sarkisian trusts to be on the field consistently. I do think between Brown and Smothers, you’ll see the majority of carries and the starting trio of WRs will rack up the stats. I just believe this group of playmakers is better than Sarkisian has ever had, top to bottom. At practice, Derrek Cooper, Jermaine Bishop Jr., Sterling Berkhalter and more will make too many plays for him to not give him looks on Saturday. The ultimate decision is up to Sarkisian and his staff but I do think the unique talent could force his hand. On top of that, I believe he’s approaching this season as if this team will play at least 16 games. He’ll be looking to keep players fresh, giving the starters moments to breathe. Steve Sarkisian has utilized rotation effectively in the past. I believe this season, being effective will mean rotating more consistently. The RB and WR rooms are as deep as they’ve been during his tenure and he’ll use that to his advantage. We’ll have to wait to see if this prediction really comes true but this is one I feel very confident about. You’ll have the top playmakers but the depth will factor in heavily. This article originally appeared on Longhorns Wire: Countdown to Kickoff: Texas will rotate WRs, RBs more this season

Sam Washington, father of basketball at 'The Saint,' still shapes Detroit youth
For Sam Washington Jr., having a father who often was away from the home he grew up in on the west side of Detroit was a good thing. In fact, it proved to be a good thing for many youths growing up in Detroit during the late 1950s through most of the 1980s.Because when the late, local legend, Sam Washington Sr., wasn't at his own home, it meant he was somewhere enriching the lives of other young people. One of Washington Sr.’s away-from-home spaces for doing good in his community was a cozy outdoor space behind Detroit’s 10th Police Precinct, 12000 Livernois, known as Hebert Field. There, he and a few other like-minded dads focused on finding ways for more kids — particularly Detroit kids — to be able to participate in positive, life-changing experiences. "Around 1967, the West Side Cubs were the only game in town for Black kids that wanted to play organized football or baseball or cheer, and my dad hated seeing so many kids getting cut because the Cubs (founded in 1957) couldn’t accommodate everyone that wanted to play,” the 69-year-old Washington Jr., who was fortunate enough to play for the Cubs, recalled. “That was a time when Detroit had a population of well over a million people (approximately 1.6 million). So, my dad (the athletic director at St. Cecilia Catholic Church) and other coaches and fathers from the Cubs (Allen “Jocko” Hughes, Leland Stein Jr. and Ron Thompson) started the St. Cecilia Beacons. “We didn’t just play (in the Catholic Youth Organization League) we had cheerleaders, food and tailgaters — the whole nine yards. And when we played in the fall, as it started to get dark, some of the dads would shine their car headlights on the field so we could keep on playing."Washington Jr. said another part of the Beacons' ritual entailed team members walking across Livernois, in unison, en route to Hebert Field after changing into their uniforms in the locker room within the venerable St. Cecilia Gymnasium at Livernois and Stearns. It is the same gymnasium — known simply as reverently as "The Saint" — where Washington Jr.'s father created a legendary basketball program in 1968, which is still talked about today by hoopers and fans alike across the country. And because Sam Washington Sr., a football, basketball and baseball standout at Detroit's Western High School, made the very most of his 54 years on Earth by using sports as a vehicle to advance thousands of young people in the game of life, his son can never go long without being reminded of his father's contributions to his beloved Detroit. This is true any time, but especially around Father's Day, because Washington Sr. was a father to so many."I can be anywhere and people come up to let me know how my father helped them," said the junior Washington, who 38 years after his dad's death following a stroke in his office at St. Cecilia, still has a hard time comprehending how his father was routinely able to work from 7 a.m. to midnight to keep the basketball program at "The Saint" running strong. "It was incredible how much time he spent at the gym. But growing up, I knew if I wanted to see him that's where he was going to be. I thought my dad was old when he was 40, but he never stopped wanting to help people. And being Sam Washington Jr., everyone knows that name and that keeps me on my toes."Part of being "Sam Washington Jr." also involves proudly serving as a caretaker of Detroit's basketball history. While speaking on consecutive days beginning June 15, Washington shared a boatload of stories about action that took place at "The Saint" across multiple decades, involving a Who's Who of sports royalty from Detroit, Michigan and even outstate.A short list of the leading figures in these stories includes NBA legends and Hall of Famers like Derrick Coleman, Terry Duerod, George "The Ice Man" Gervin, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Greg Kelser, Bernard King, Dan Roundfield, Campy Russell, Steve Smith, Isiah Thomas, Chris Webber, and Jalen Rose, who, as an elementary school student at St. Cecilia's school, was invited downstairs by Sam Washington Sr. to view footage of Rose's father, Jimmie Walker, who was selected first overall in the 1967 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. There also were stories about Detroit Pistons great Dave Bing, who paved the way for other NBA players to bring their talents to the "Mecca of Detroit Basketball."However, while stories about legendary players that played at "Ceciliaville" are virtually endless, Detroiters that have studied its history as closely as Washington, like Randy Henry, say there is much more to the story. And that is why the legacy of Sam Washington Sr. should be revisited today. In 1968, a 13-year-old Henry thought the opportunity to see Dave Bing play at The Saint for a quarter was a chance of a lifetime. But his visits to Livernois and Stearns afterward benefited him even more."At that time in Detroit, there were a lot of places where good basketball was being played, like the 4H Club, Peterson Park, Franklin Wright Settlements, Brewster Recreation Center, and Lasky Recreation Center," said Henry, a former longtime producer/director at WDIV-TV Local 4, who also produced "The Saint: Where Stars Are Made Not Born," a documentary film that was released in 2019."But if you wanted to find out if you could really play and compete, you came to St. Cecilia. And then, afterwards, we all walked down the street together to the Burger King and there was no retaliation," only respect. Henry continued: "Every high school coach in Detroit would be at The Saint evaluating the talent, and college coaches would come in from across the country. But the thing most people miss about The Saint, was that it wasn't just about great players. It was much more than that, because Sam started the basketball program and opened it up to the city to get kids off the street during the riots, and it continued to be our safe haven through the years.More: WeRun313's story is told across Detroit's streets and in a new bookMore: These Detroit singers with a rich history are united by music and more"Our roundtable discussions about the future, we had them at The Saint. And because you had to have discipline and follow Sam's rules, you had confidence when he helped to place you at a college and then we all couldn't wait to come back during the holiday breaks to brag about what we were doing."Sam and all of the adults put their arms around us and made us believe that we could go anywhere in the country and be successful. We were a family and we need more of what we had at The Saint today."Henry spoke from the heart on the afternoon of June 16. Later that day, Keith Bennett, Henry's dear friend and schoolmate at Mackenzie High School, explained that The Saint symbolized "family" to him as well, starting first and foremost with Sam Washington Sr."I didn't meet my father until I was 35 years old, but Sam did things for me that my father could not have done," Bennett, who was coaching high school athletes before he graduated from Mackenzie in 1974, said. With Washington's guidance and care, Bennett also was able to tackle other high-level responsibilities at a young age, including being assistant director of St. Cecilia's gym and assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Detroit.Bennett continued: "Sam became almost like my God figure because he always stood up for me and I became an extension of the Washington family." And because Bennett, like many other Detroiters, made a family connection with Sam Washington Sr.'s life's work, he will be happy to know that the son of the great man also is looking forward to continuing a proud legacy."I will definitely reflect on my dad's legacy on Father's Day because that's something I always do," Sam Washington Jr., who provides tutoring, SAT preparation, life-skill programs and basketball clinics through the nonprofit Sam Washington Foundation, said. Washington also said he hopes to have an opportunity in the future to provide programming for youths at the SAY Detroit Play Center at St. Cecilia, which currently is being built on the campus of St. Cecilia's Church, which includes the fabled gymnasium."My father was a visionary who was ahead of his time. He was doing free clinics and went to Lansing to allow our kids playing in high school to travel to different states, not just for the basketball, but for the life experiences. His door was always wide open, and he didn't care what color you were," he said."And everything he did came from his heart — he was a good man, a good father. When I was younger, I really didn't understand how impactful he was. But we can all still learn from him today."Scott Talley is a native Detroiter, a proud product of Detroit Public Schools and a lifelong lover of Detroit culture in its diverse forms. ‘She’s so bad’: Criticism mounts as Caitlin Clark continues to struggle in blowout loss
Jun 20, 2026; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) yells at the referee after a call during the game against the Atlanta Dream during the fourth quarter at State Farm Arena. Mandatory Credit: Jordan Godfree-Imagn ImagesThis week, the rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese was renewed as Clark’s Indiana Fever took on Reese and the Atlanta Dream twice in three days. Unfortunately for Clark, however, she went 0-2 in those games as she struggled to protect the ball, especially in Saturday’s game. While Clark got off to a hot start in Saturday’s game, she quickly cooled off and finished with a season-high in turnovers in what turned out to be a blowout loss to the Dream. As a result of her struggles, Clark received some heavy criticism from fans.Clark’s Turnover IssuesEver since she entered the league, Clark has led the league in turnovers, averaging a league-high 5.6 turnovers per game during her rookie season in 2024 and 5.2 turnovers per game in 2025. This season, Clark is once again leading the league in turnovers, averaging 4.8 turnovers per contest. She once again struggled on Saturday night.Clark started off strong in Saturday’s showdown with the Dream, scoring 13 points in the first quarter with no turnovers. However, she cooled down significantly the rest of the game, scoring just 13 points over the next three quarters combined. However, scoring wasn’t Clark’s biggest issue in the loss. While Clark finished the first quarter without a single turnover, she turned the ball over a season-high seven times through the rest of the game as the Fever blew an 11-point lead to eventually lose in a blowout, 113-96.Criticism Mounts for Caitlin ClarkAfter the game, Clark received a heavy dose of criticism on social media as a result of her turnover struggles on Saturday night.“5 turnovers in 5 minutes for Caitlin Clark but her fans will act like it’s a war crime when GMs don’t name her the best PG in the league,” one fan wrote in a post on X.“This game isn’t on Stephanie white, this game is on Caitlin’s lack of leadership and turnovers,” someone else added.“She is a massive net negative if she goes cold, because she is the least versatile and most one-way player in the W. If she’s not hitting her shot, she’s a boat anchor,” another fan wrote in a post.“This is her issue. It’s hard for her to put together a complete game. From start to finish. It’s either one half or the other. Or one insane quarter,” someone else added.“She’s not having a good season. That’s the bottom line,” another fan wrote.“Clark is a cancer. Those turnovers in the second half ruined the Fever’s lead. You cultists can keep blaming the coach and the teammates, but the team was better off without her,” someone else added.“She’s so bad,” another fan wrote.Clark is obviously a prolific scorer and playmaker, ranking fourth in the league in scoring with 20.8 points per game and second in assists per game with 8.2. However, her turnovers continue to be an issue, and that was once again the case on Saturday. The post ‘She’s so bad’: Criticism mounts as Caitlin Clark continues to struggle in blowout loss appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.

How Brewers' Jake Bauers conquered his fears to find All-Star form
LAS VEGAS — The Milwaukee Brewers’ Jake Bauers would wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, grab a baseball bat, walk over to the mirror and just start swinging.Over and over again, hours at a time, until exhaustion set in.He would wake up, pore over videotape of his swing, trying to detect any possible little thing that could end all of his struggles. It was relentless, night after night, day after day, the anguish and anxiety slowly eroding his soul, wondering how long he could do this.“It was a 24/7 thing," Bauers tells USA TODAY Sports. “I couldn’t turn it off. I was killing myself."Here he was, 29 years old with a wife and two young children, playing in his seventh different organization, wondering if his career was over before it ever really started.“It wasn't necessarily killing me like in life," Bauers said, “but it sucked as a baseball player. You call yourself a baseball player, you're getting paid to play baseball, and you don't feel like you're very good at it."It was near the end of the season last year, the Brewers were in Pittsburgh for a three-game series the first weekend of September, and Bauers knew his career was on life support. He was hitting .188 with a .315 on-base percentage and .333 slugging percentage.Bauers, in the starting lineup batting seventh as the Brewers’ DH on Sept. 5, popped up to the shortstop on a 78-mph curveball by Johan Oviedo in his first at-bat. Then, he struck out on an 86.3-mph slider his next. That’s when he completely lost it.“I remember going down in the tunnel by myself," Bauers says, “and screaming:“What is this?’“Are we going to keep doing this?“Can I even play?“Do I have what it takes?“Is this it?“I remember looking up at the scoreboard and it says .180," Bauer says. “Then, just saying, “[Expletive] it. I’m just going to go up there, not thing about anything, and just swing. Whatever happens, happens. I really don’t care anymore."Bauers stepped to the plate in the sixth inning, and with two outs and runners on second and third, slapped a two-run single to right field off reliever Carmen Miodzinski’s 97.3-mph fastball for a 3-2 Brewers lead. He came up again in the eighth inning, and this time, smoked a single to center field with an exit velocity of 104.4 mph. He even stole second base.Bauers’ confidence, which had completely vanished, came rushing back into his body. The next day, he went 2-for-3 with two RBI, hitting his first homer in three months. The next, 2-for-4 with a double and two more RBI.Bauers stepped aside mentally, cleared his mind, and let his natural talents took over.“That’s when I realized," Bauers says, “I just needed to get out of the way."He hit .378 with a .472 on-base percentage, .600 slugging percentage and a 1.072 OPS the remainder of the regular season, and had a .973 OPS in six postseason games. The Brewers, who had signed him to a minor-league contract the previous winter, this time signed him to a one-year, $2.7 million deal, making him a fixture in the everyday lineup, and a rejuvenated Bauers has run with the opportunity.Bauers, playing first base and the outfield, has responded with the finest season of his career. It’s not even the halfway point of the season, and he already has hit the most homers (13) of his career, and is just two RBI (46s) shy of his career-high, leading the Brewers in both categories. He’s hitting .269 with a .373 on-base percentage and .502 slugging percentage, with his .875 OPS being 41% above the league average. The Brewers are now campaigning for him to make the All-Star team.“I don't know, man,’’ Bauers says, quietly, “I haven't really even thought about the All-Star Game. It wasn't really something that I ever pictured for myself.“I mean, you have dreams like the All-Star Game when you come up, and you have things that you want to do in this game, but I've been beaten up in this game so hard that I think for a while, those kind of dreams kind of went out the window.“It's just trying to survive and keep my head above water."For a guy who has bounced around looking for a home his entire career, Bauers finally has found peace in Milwaukee. He has become the Brewers’ most consistent hitter, and a vital cog to their success, sitting back in first place in the NL Central.“This guy has meant so much to us," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “He came to us last year as a minor-league free agent, we don’t give him a big-league job, and he earned it by working hard every day. It wasn't easy. He had days when I could tell he was down, a guy that was scuffling, a guy that was saying, “What am I doing?’“Now, look at him. He’s having an All-Star season. Man, I’d love to see him make that All-Star team. What a great story it would for not only us, but for all of baseball."Bauers, who grew up in Huntington Beach, California, was considered one of the nation’s top high-school prospects with a scholarship to Hawaii. The San Diego Padres, and Murphy as their Triple-A manager for the El Paso Chihuahuas, drafted him as a 17-year-old in the seventh round, believing he could be a star.“He was a talked-about guy," Murphy said. “Everybody kept talking about how this kid can really hit. But then he was traded pretty quickly after that. And never stopped getting traded.’’Bauers was traded one year after the draft to the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-team swap that involved future All-Stars Trea Turner and Will Myers. The Rays traded him four years later in another three-way trade that included All-Stars Carlos Santana, Edwin Encarnacion and Yandy Diaz. In 11 years, he has gone from San Diego to Tampa Bay to Cleveland to Seattle to Cincinnati to New York to Milwaukee, with a couple of minor-league contracts and an out-right assignment mixed in, too.“When he got to the big leagues, because of the type of swing he had, people wanted him to pull," Murphy said. “They wanted him to hit homers. He had some bouts of hitting homers, but he got away from what made him cook.“I won’t say the organization, but he was with an organization that was saying, “We need you to do damage.’ I’m philosophically against telling a kid to do damage. You’ve got to be a pure hitter. So when he came to us, I said, 'Jake, I don't care if you're hitting homers. I want you to be the hitter you can be.'“Jake has done that, and you look at him now, and he’s a guy people respect because of the journey he’s been on."Bauers has become a role model for perseverance in this game.“It’s one of those things like [quarterback] Sam Darnold of the Seahawks," said Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald, Bauers’ former teammate in Seattle. “People’s progression happens at different moments. Jake was a big-time prospect. Started well, and then got lost in the shuffle, DFA’d here, traded there. Expectations get so high, but development is not this perfect linear. It’s different for everybody.“It’s a lot to put on young guys who are just trying to figure out who they are in life, and you don’t know who you are as a player."Jason Lane, the Brewers' offense and strategy coordinator, can certainly relate. He was an All-America pitcher and DH who led USC to the 1998 College World Series championship with the tournament’s most hits, batting .417 while also pitching. He was drafted in 1999 by the Houston Astros, and hit 26 homers to help lead the Astros to the 2005 World Series. He stayed for two more years and wound up playing for six different teams in three years. The next thing he knew, Lane gave up hitting, became a pitcher again, and found himself back in the major leagues in 2014 with the Padres. He spent his last professional season playing in the minors for Murphy in El Paso before joining the Brewers coaching staff after the 2015 season. When Bauers arrived in Milwaukee, Lane saw the talent, while also witnessing the constant mental torture, beating himself up so much he never gave himself a chance for success.“When we got him, he was fighting his mechanics and was just sort of frustrated the whole year," Lane said. “The next year, we started talking to him about vision and intent. Forget the mechanics, have your intent able to attack the ball right away. If you attack it the right way, it takes care of the mechanics. He was just overthinking everything."Says Bauers: “I was trying to be perfect. I mean, this game's hard enough if you're standing in the box trying to hit, and you're thinking about where your hands are, what your lower half is, and everything else. I was handcuffing myself."These days, Bauers looks like a completely different hitter. His chase rate has diminished and ranks in the 98th percentile. His bat speed has accelerated, ranking in the 97th percentile. His hard-hit rate is the 97th percentile. His exit velocity is the 92nd percentile. He’s hitting everyone, batting .270 with an .863 OPS against right-handed starters, and is actually better against left-handed starters, .289 with a .999 OPS.“He’s been playing the game with more peace and freedom,’" Lane said, “When you’re chasing results and mechanics, you get sleepless nights. You’re always like, 'What’s tomorrow going to be like?’“It’s really hard at the big-league level to convince guys that you can have a good day at the plate without getting a hit because it’s a result-based business. They’re fighting for their lives a lot of times. So it’s really hard to get that confidence back. There are so many guys go to the plate defeated before the first pitch is even thrown."These days, Bauers' self-doubt has evaporated, the confidence is back, and the game is joyous once again. The last time he had the feeling believing he’d have a success each game instead of consumed with averting failure?Bauers, without blinking, blurted: “high school.""I’m grateful for the journey of the past," Bauers says. "I look back to my major-league debut eight years ago, and there was a 22-year-old kid who thought he was going to be a Hall of Fame. The pursuit of the result became a negative thing. I put so much pressure on myself to live up to that.“I went through all of the hardships, but I’m grateful for all the struggles. I wouldn’t be the person that I am today without everything I've been through in my career."Bauers has fallen back in love with the game, and the game is loving him right back.“I have a completely different relationship with the game now than I did in the past,’’ Bauers quietly says. “I know that whatever happens today doesn't define who I am.’’Bauers stopped, looked away, and then softly said: “It just took a long time to realize that."Around the basepaths– The Houston Astros have told teams that they are wasting their time asking about shortstop Jeremy Pena and first baseman Christian Walker. They may be a sub-.500 team, but plan to be buyers at the deadline, not sellers, in a division in which only the Seattle Mariners are above .500. They are searching for bullpen help and a left-handed hitting outfielder.– The Los Angeles Angels also plan to retain their key players at the deadline with owner Arte Moreno not wanting to unload starters Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano, or outfielder Jo Adell. Detmers and Soriano still are under team control through 2028, while Adell is eligible for free agency after the 2027 season. If the Angels changed their mind and made Detmers available, they could demand a package greater than the one the Tigers will receive for two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. He not only has two more years of control than Skubal, but is earning just $2.7 million. He also is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball.Detmers' last six starts: 2-0, 1.36 ERA, 12 hits, 3 runs, 5 walks, 39 strikeouts, 33 innings.Detmers' last three starts: 1-0, 0.45 ERA, 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 18 strikeouts, 20 innings.– GMs believe there will be fewer trades involving prospects at this year’s trade deadline because of the impending CBA in which MLB is pushing for a salary cap.“If there’s a salary cap, the young players will be more valuable than ever before,’’ one GM said. “No one’s going to want to trade good young players making no money with a cap.– MLB executives believe the minimum salary will rise from $780,000 to $1.25 million when the next CBA is finalized. The union proposed a $1.5 million minimum in 2027, $1.65 million in 2028, $1.825 million in 2029, $2 million in 2030 and $2.2 million in 2031.– Mike Trout has never participated in the Home Run Derby, but with the All-Star Game being in Philadelphia, a 40-minute drive from his hometown of Millville, N.J., he said he’d consider it this year if All-Star officials invite him this year.– The Boston Red Sox will be on everyone’s speed dial next month with starter Sonny Gray, closer Aroldis Chapman, outfielder Jarren Duran and possibly first baseman Willson Contreras thought to be available.– Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton insists that teams are wasting their time making calls inquiring about his availability. He has a full no-trade clause and loves playing in Minnesota.– The Yankees are making it no secret they want Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers at the trade deadline.– The San Francisco Giants are hopeful of moving third baseman Matt Chapman– who is owed $100 million over the next four years and has a full no-trade clause – along with starter Robbie Ray and second baseman Luis Arraez. They're pessimistic about the odds of trading Rafael Devers or Willy Adames with their bloated contracts. – The sleeper in the Tigers Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal sweepstakes, several executives predict, will be Atlanta. The cost could be two of their top-10 prospects, including one who’s in the top 100 overall.– One father of an MLB player, after seeing MLB’s proposal banning high school graduates from being drafted until they’re 20 years old, is offering a counter-proposal.MLB can still draft high-school players, pay 50% of a signing bonus to players in lieu of them receiving NIL money, and retain exclusive rights to the player for three years. The player can still attend college, giving MLB the right to monitor his development and negotiate a contract after each season. After three years, the player can either sign with the team that drafted him or re-enters the drat if no agreement is reached.OR: Players can have the option of attending college or junior college for one year, and then decide whether to enter the draft after the first year or wait until three years.– Bryan Duffy, the grandson of Atlanta legendary executive Bill Bartholomay, has organized a GoFundMe me for Walter Banks, Atlanta’s beloved usher who began working in 1965 for the Atlanta Crackers, and has worked Altanta baseball, basketball and football games games as an usher since 1966, and inducted into Atlanta’s hospitality Hall of Fame in 2002.He is now being transitioned into a full-time health facility, where baseball dignitaries like Ryan Klesko have made donations to help provide for his care and honor his legacy.– While MLB informed three Giants relievers last week they could not write a Bible verse on their baseball cap, which they chose on Pride night, Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen said last year that MLB cracked down on him last year when he wrote Charlie Kirk’s name on his cap after his murderer last September, threatening a fine if he did it again.– Driveline founder Kyle Boddy and the Boston Red Sox have parted ways, less than three years after chief baseball officer Craig Breslow hired him to be a special advisor. His previous stint with an MLB team lasted less than two years when he was the pitching coordinator with the Cincinnati Reds.– Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper hasn’t played right field since April 2022 when he tore an elbow ligament but says he would be willing to move back to right field temporarily if it would help the Phillies acquire a right-handed bat.The Phillies appreciate the gesture, but are passing, having no interest in moving Harper back to the outfield and risking injury. They will continue to look for a right-handed hitting outfielder.– The Angels may be struggling at the big-league level again, but are the only organization in which every farm team has a winning record.– The Boston Red Sox, who had slashed their pro scouting department, have suddenly begun assigning scouts to MLB games recently.– The more things change, the more they stay the same department:The Red Sox scored three or fewer runs in 55.6% of the games, going 3-12 (.200 winning percentage) in those games, before manager Alex Cora was fired this season. They have also scored three or fewer runs in 55.6 of the games under interim manager Chad Tracy, going 5-20 (.200 winning percentage).– If Shohei Ohtani isn’t the starting pitcher at the All-Star Game, it may be difficult for him to enter the game in relief, the Dodgers say, while remaining as the starting DH.The NL starting pitcher is expected to be Phillies lefty Cristopher Sanchez or the Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski.– Padres closer Mason Miller still has not allowed an extra-base hit since Aug. 25, 2025, spanning 51.1 consecutive innings, the third-longest in MLB history.Brewers sensation Jacob Misiorowski’s last nine starts:87 strikeouts.1 extra-base hit. He’s the only pitcher since 1900 to accomplish the feat.– Misiorowski was asked by USA TODAY what’s the fastest pitch he could ever throw.“I think I can throw 105 mph," he said. How about 106?“I don’t think I could do that.’’His fastest on record is 104.5 mph.– The White Sox have been without their MVP, Munetaka Murakami since May 29, but remain in first place. They have had 13 players make their major-league debut this season, tying the 1944 Cincinnati Reds for the most since the All-Star break.‘‘I think you should stop thinking of this as a surprise,’’ White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery told reporters, “because we’re consistently winning, we’re consistently in every game.’’– Yankee starter Cam Schlittler’s 1.71 ERA through the first 16 starts this season is the lowest by a Yankee pitcher since Hall of Famer Whitey Ford in 1964, and second-lowest in 107 years.– Philadelphia Phillies rookie Andrew Painter, who was optioned to Triple-A after being lit up once again, was 1-8 with a 7.06 ERA and was told that he must improve his fastball. He was yielding a .404 batting average and .660 slugging percentage with the pitch.– While the landscape is filled with pitchers and position players who have struggled since the WBC, Eduardo Rodriguez has absolutely excelled since pitching 4 ⅓ scoreless innings to help Venezuela beat Team USA in the WBC championship game.He is yielding a 2.45 ERA in 15 starts, working at least six innings nine times, while yielding two or fewer runs in 11 games.– Future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander, 43, was hoping to become the last player to win 300 games in his career. Now, he’s hoping just to make another start in his career, as he was shut down again with a left hamstring strain just before he was scheduled to start Sunday in his first start since March 30."I've always said that I want to play until the wheels fall off," Verlander told reporters. “Maybe they are falling off.“I hope not. ... If I can't be healthy, and I continue to prove that I can't be healthy, that's something that I have to really evaluate. …It's disappointing to say the least."Follow Nightengale on X: @BnightengaleThis article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Jakers Bauers an All-Star? Yet, the President hasn't commented on their remarkable opening performance, securing victories in both matches against Paraguay and Australia. They dispatched the Socceroos 2-0 on Friday afternoon to guarantee top spot in Group D - leaving them with nothing at stake in their concluding group fixture against Turkey, giving Pochettino the opportunity to rest key players and manage workload.• Two FIFA World Cup games played in 'severe' conditions as temperatures soar• World Cup team threatening to implode over unpaid bonuses after months of waitingTrump has stayed highly engaged on social media, frequently commenting on sports while showing up courtside at the New York Knicks versus San Antonio Spurs clash in the NBA Finals.Trump called Pochettino to wish him well ahead of the tournament -Credit:Emilee Chinn, Getty ImagesTrump contacted Pochettino before the competition began, telling the head coach: "Well, I just got to say you're a fantastic guy, a fantastic coach.", reports the Mirror US."I know all about your record and your success, and I know how great the players are. Gary Lineker aims dig at BBC during shock World Cup cameo for ITV
Gary Lineker was back in familiar territory on Saturday night as he returned to free-to-air TV and even kicked off his ITV stint with a brief cameo as a presenter.Lineker, who presented BBC’s Match of the Day for 26 years until he departed the corporation last May, was announced on Friday as a pundit for ITV’s coverage of Germany against Ivory Coast in Group E of the World Cup.However, Lineker started his appearance on ITV with a typically light-hearted moment after he started to present the show before presenter Laura Woods interjected in comical fashion.Gary Lineker made an appearance on ITV during the World Cup (ITV)“Thank you very much for joining us on ITV for this one. Another day, another game, another channel,” Lineker started before being cut off by Woods.Woods added: “Gary, that’s my job!”Lineker replied: “Sorry, sorry. Old habits!”Lineker will present ITV game show The Box later this year and could not resist a slight dig at old employees BBC after they have drawn criticism for not being based in America for the World Cup, especially given ITV’s eye-catching studio backdrop in New York.“I have been doing a show daily for Netflix, we’re Times Square but I did desperately want to come and see your set,” Lineker said.“I think it’s absolutely amazing and I can confirm that it is real. What a backdrop.”You can take the man out of the presenting chair but you can't take the presenter out of @GaryLineker 😅 pic.twitter.com/ubMAOiGisN— ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 20, 2026ITV took a look back on Lineker’s own World Cup history before coverage turned to Germany’s match with Ivory Coast and the former England forward reflected on his golden boot in 1986 and being involved in the ‘Hand of God’ game against Argentina – where Diego Maradona also produced a wonderful individual goal. The ex-BBC host was also asked about Harry Kane drawing level with his record World Cup tally of 10 goals for England after the current captain struck a brace against Croatia on Wednesday.“I am not a violent man, but I did kick the door down! No, I was genuinely pleased for Harry. Obviously it’s taken him an extra World Cup to do it and there is quite a lot of penalties in there, but we’ll give him that,” Lineker said with a smirk.“Yeah, true (less minutes). In all seriousness, Harry is a way better all-round number nine than I was. I was very much a penalty box player and Harry does it all doesn’t he?“He drops back, his passing range is fabulous and I think he is our best ever number nine.”Lineker is also presenting the Rest is Football on Netflix (Seb Barros)The light-hearted nature of Lineker’s appearance continued when Woods allowed the 65-year-old to take the show into the break, but the veteran anchor did praise the “fabulous job” of his female colleague before focus turned to the World Cup action.

Could Harvey Elliott Be “Like A New Signing” For Iraola?
ISTANBUL, TURKEY - MAY 20: Harvey Elliott of Aston Villa during the UEFA Europa League Final 2026 match between SC Freiburg and Aston Villa FC at Besiktas Park on May 20, 2026 in Istanbul, Turkey. (Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) | Getty Images One of the major—and I believe wholly justified—accusations against Arne Slot was his poor squad management during both of his campaigns in charge, including the title winning one. One of the players the he quickly sidelined was Harvey Elliott, who had been a fan favorite under Jurgen Klopp’s tenure. Although he never reached regular starter status under Klopp, many had expected to kick-on at Liverpool, having shown genuine flashes of brilliance in his ability to both pick out a pass and find the back of the net. However, after mostly riding the pine during Slot’s first season, he was understandably ready to find playing time elsewhere. A move to Aston Villa—with an obligation to buy if he got a paltry 10 league appearances—seemed like a great move for all involved. Unfortunately, Villa decided to keep the talented attacking midfielder on the bench, thus making it a loss for all involved. Well, Elliott is back at Liverpool, and doing some pre-preseason training, hoping to make a case for himself with new gaffer Andoni Iraola. Iraola has spoken briefly about Liverpool’s squad, including the players who weren’t as fancied by Slot.“For me, and I will tell them, [they] are all new signings,” Iraoloa explained. “For me, you are all new signings and I think we have a lot of quality in our squad, and [I’m] really looking forward to working with them.”Under both Klopp and Slot, Elliott found it difficult to nail down a spot due to some shortcomings in his physique, not ability. He’s a bit too slow to really be used as a winger, and a bit too easily bullied off the ball to be a midfielder. His pace (or lack thereof) on the wing might be a concern for Iraola too, but his workrate and football intelligence could help him find a way into the thin squad, especially since we know how much the new boss likes utilizing the five sub rule. Hopefully Elliott can make space for himself within the squad under this manager, and if not, hopefully he can find a permanent move somewhere that allows him to shine.

Phillies Acquire Hulking 25-Year-Old Russian Slugger After Historic Draft

(Photo by Brandon Sloter/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesThe Philadelphia Phillies have regularly leveraged their farm system depth to bring in win-now talent as they pursue a World Series championship in recent seasons. Now it seems they are willing to look outside of the more traditional avenues to restock the farm talent, as they’ve brought in a minor-league slugger whose journey to affiliated baseball was truly unique.FORBES | By Peter ChawagaCubs Former All-Star Could Miss Rest Of Season After Injury SetbackPhiladelphia Phillies Sign Unique 25-Year-Old SluggerAccording to his MiLB transaction log, the Phillies have acquired Lyle Miller-Green, a 25-year-old outfielder who was born in Tomsk, Russia.Miller-Green previously spent time in the Chicago White Sox organization and attracted national attention because of his remarkable background and rare physical tools.“When the White Sox selected a 23-year-old named Lyle Miller-Green with the 499th overall pick in the Draft in the 17th round on Wednesday, the young man who was saved from a Russian ‘baby house’ by two loving Americans was embraced yet again,” MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince reported in 2024. “Should Miller-Green, a 6-foot-6 right fielder from Austin Peay, seize this opportunity the way he has his upbringing in the U.S., this Siberian Sultan of Swat is going to be something special.”When Miller-Green was drafted, he made some history as one of the few Russian-born players to reach affiliated baseball.“Only five Russian-born players have played in the major leagues in the modern era, but only one — a right-hander named Victor Cole — debuted in the live ball era (since 1920) and was selected in the draft,” Castrovince added. “So for a full-blooded Russian to be selected in this process is unique.”FORBES | By Peter ChawagaMets Reunite With Braves’ Former Infielder After Surprising CutPhiladelphia Phillies’ Outfielder Sees Rare Baseball Journey Continue With New ContractFor the Phillies, the move represents a low-risk opportunity to add another intriguing athlete to the system.Miller-Green has batted just .241 in his minor-league career, mostly in High-A, so far. And the Phillies signed him after he was released by the White Sox. But while he remains a long-term project, the Phillies have shown a willingness to take chances on athletic players with significant upside. His combination of size, power potential and unique background makes him a prospect worth monitoring as he begins the next chapter of his professional career. And for a franchise that continues searching for future contributors wherever they can find them, particularly in the outfield, taking a chance on a 25-year-old Russian-born slugger with uncommon physical tools is the type of move that could eventually pay unexpected dividends. This article was originally published on Forbes.com

Man City, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool linked in midfielder moves
Man City, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool linked in midfielder movesWhy Eliot Anderson’s £150m valuation is shaping Inter Milan’s transfer plansPremier League interest drives Eliot Anderson’s riseEliot Anderson has become one of the most talked-about midfielders in European football this summer, with reports suggesting his future could trigger a series of major transfer moves across England and Italy.According to reporting from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Anderson sits at the centre of a potential transfer domino effect involving Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Inter Milan. While much of the attention has focused on other names linked to the Nerazzurri, it is Anderson who could ultimately influence several significant deals before the window closes. The 23-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable rise in value over the past year. Having established himself as one of Nottingham Forest’s most influential performers, he is now attracting interest from some of the wealthiest clubs in world football.Reports from Italy suggest that Manchester City remain determined to secure Anderson’s signature, even after seeing an offer worth around £120 million rejected. Nottingham Forest are believed to be holding firm at a valuation of £130 million, which equates to approximately €150 million. That figure alone underlines how highly Anderson is now regarded.Curtis Jones of Liverpool and Elliot AndersonNottingham Forest hold firm on valuationFew players have seen their stock rise as dramatically as Eliot Anderson’s over recent seasons. His blend of technical quality, work rate and intelligence in possession has made him a standout performer in the Premier League. Comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and capable of progressing attacks through both passing and carrying, Anderson has developed into a modern midfielder coveted by elite clubs.Manchester City’s interest is hardly surprising.Pep Guardiola’s side are constantly searching for midfielders capable of controlling matches in multiple phases of play. Anderson’s versatility and maturity have reportedly placed him high on their shortlist.Nottingham Forest, however, are in no rush to sell. The club’s negotiating position has been strengthened by Anderson’s contract situation and growing demand. With several clubs monitoring developments, Forest can afford to remain patient while encouraging a bidding battle.La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that only a relatively small gap remains between Manchester City’s latest proposal and Forest’s asking price. In the context of a £130 million deal, the difference is described as little more than a final negotiating hurdle.Inter Milan watching developments closelyAlthough Inter Milan are not directly pursuing Eliot Anderson, his future is becoming increasingly important to their transfer strategy. The Italian club are understood to be monitoring the situation because Anderson’s departure would leave Nottingham Forest needing reinforcements in midfield. Forest have maintained an interest in Davide Frattesi and could use proceeds from any sale to strengthen their squad. That possibility has attracted significant attention in Milan.Inter are looking to reshape parts of their midfield this summer and a sale of Frattesi would provide additional flexibility in the market. Consequently, Anderson’s move could indirectly influence a number of transfer discussions involving the Serie A giants. The original report from La Gazzetta dello Sport outlines a clear sequence of events. Anderson joins Manchester City, Nottingham Forest pursue a replacement, and Inter Milan gain resources to accelerate other targets.Whether every piece falls into place remains uncertain, but Anderson appears to be the crucial first step.Market influence extends beyond one transferModern transfer windows are rarely about isolated deals. Instead, they often revolve around a handful of players whose movements create opportunities elsewhere.Eliot Anderson appears to be one of those players this summer.A transfer worth €150 million would instantly become one of the largest deals involving an English-based midfielder. It would also demonstrate the premium currently attached to young, versatile players capable of thriving at the highest level. For Nottingham Forest, such a sale would represent a transformative financial return. For Manchester City, it would signal another major investment in the future of their midfield. For Inter Milan, it could create the conditions required to progress their own plans. Most importantly, it highlights just how far Anderson has come. Once viewed as a promising prospect, he is now being discussed as one of the most valuable midfielders in the Premier League. The coming weeks will determine whether Manchester City meet Nottingham Forest’s demands, but one thing is already clear. Eliot Anderson’s future has become one of the defining stories of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea and Man City close to Maresca compensation package
Chelsea and Man City close to Maresca compensation packageManchester City are nearing a financial settlement with Chelsea that will allow them to appoint Enzo Maresca as their new manager.Chelsea are demanding a compensation package from Manchester City for Maresca, with the West Londoners insisting they have evidence of an illegal approach for the Italian.Chelsea claim Maresca breached his contract by talking with Manchester City prior to his resignation at Stamford Bridge in January. As a result, Chelsea want compensation for Maresca’s exit. The head coach’s departure contributed to a dismal second half of the season that resulted in a 10th-place finish and absence of European football. Chelsea also paid to appoint Liam Rosenior from Strasbourg after Maresca’s exit.Though Chelsea chiefs are adamant that they have sufficient evidence to report Maresca and Manchester City to the Premier League, the Blues currently have no plans to do so and are confident a club-to-club resolution can be found.According to The Guardian, an agreement between the clubs, who have a strong relationship, is now close.Read – World Cup Day 10: Super sub Undav, Curacao make historySee more – How FIFA’s new World Cup format manufactures dead rubbersFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

Felix Nmecha ‘open’ to England return as Man United and Liverpool circle
Felix Nmecha ‘open’ to England return as Man United and Liverpool circleFelix Nmecha is open to leaving Borussia Dortmund this summer and a potential return to English football.Manchester United and Liverpool have been linked with Nmecha, who has enjoyed an impressive start to the World Cup this summer. The 25-year-old scored twice during Germany’s opening win over Curacao, before setting up Deniz Undav’s late winner against Ivory Coast on Saturday evening.Nmecha’s performances at the tournament follow an impressive period at Dortmund, where he’s emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s most impressive box-to-box midfielders. Premier League clubs have taken note, with TEAMtalk reporting that Nmecha is open to a return to England. The German came through the academy at Manchester City, but made only three first-team appearances before returning to Germany.A Premier League transfer is now deemed a ‘very realistic’ prospect this summer, despite Nmecha only signing a new deal at Dortmund in March. His contract contains no release clause, though sources around the player have hinted a fee of around €60m (£52m) could persuade the German side to sell.Real Madrid and Barcelona have also both checked in on the player’s progress and are monitoring his situation.Read – World Cup Day 10: Super sub Undav, Curacao make historySee more – How FIFA’s new World Cup format manufactures dead rubbersFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

The Latest: Vance and Iranian negotiators are in Switzerland to work on details of deal

(Nathan Howard/Pool Photo via AP)2026-06-21T08:40:00Z U.S. and Iranian negotiators are in Switzerland on Sunday for talks on working out key details of their interim agreement to end the Iran war.A team led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, is to meet with Iranian negotiators led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.Pakistani envoys are also in place, as well as Qatari mediators, for the technical-level discussions to end the conflict that began in late February. Vance said he was optimistic about making progress in talks about Iran’s nuclear program and a ceasefire in southern Lebanon. On the eve of the talks, Tehran announced it has closed the Strait of Hormuz again over Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Lebanon. The interim deal between the U.S. and Iran is meant to stop fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon, as well as calling for billions of dollars of Iran’s assets to be unfrozen. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose American tolls in the strait if a final deal with Iran isn’t reached in 60 days. The interim agreement calls for toll-free travel for 60 days in the waterway that is vital for the world’s oil supply. Here is the latest: The head of the UN nuclear watchdog is also at the scene of the talksRafael Grossi, chief of the U.N. nuclear watchdog — the International Atomic Energy Agency — met with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis on the sidelines of the gathering at the picturesque mountainside resort near Lake Lucerne on Sunday morning. The agency had monitored the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated between the U.S. and Iran under the Obama administration. Trump in 2018 withdrew the U.S. from that agreement. Read More Talks in Switzerland will focus on the Israel-Hezbollah war, Iran saysIran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei says Tehran will mainly focus during the talks on Sunday on the ongoing fighting in Lebanon.Tehran insists that the deal’s implementation start with a cessation of all fighting — including between Israel and Hezbollah. Baghaei said the U.S. “has been unable or unwilling” to hold Israel to the ceasefire.Iran will meet in the morning with Pakistani and Qatari mediators, and in the afternoon, there will be a four-way meeting including the U.S. negotiating team. There is currently only one day of negotiations planned, Baghaei told the state news agency. “The implementation of any document is more important than its signing,” Baghaei also said Sunday. Iran’s president has said that Iran will maintain its right to a nuclear program.“What is certain is that we will never back down from the right to enrich uranium, and the other side is also forced to accept it,” Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday, according to state media. A temporary lull in Israeli strikes in LebanonAs the U.S.-Iran talks were to kick off in Switzerland, a ceasefire appears to be holding in Lebanon, a lull that came after another day of heavy fighting. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported over 50 killed in Israeli strikes since the deal was signed on Thursday. Five Israeli soldiers were also killed.Israel says it targeted Hezbollah infrastructure on Saturday, including a tunnel network in the southern Lebanese town of Kfar Tebnit. But by Sunday morning, residents in southern Lebanon reported a lull in Israeli strikes. There also were no reports of Hezbollah fire from the Israeli side.Israel’s military has received instructions to uphold the ceasefire, and said it is only acting defensively, according to an Israeli military official who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military guidelines.—Melanie Lidman in Tel Aviv, IsraelPakistani mediators also in place in SwitzerlandPakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir are also in Switzerland for the high-level U.S.-Iran talks, the prime minister’s office said without providing further details. The technical-level talks at Bürgenstock Resort near the Swiss city of Lucerne are being held after Sharif dispatched his special envoy, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, to Tehran to persuade Iranian authorities to send a delegation to Switzerland. The meeting was originally scheduled for Friday but was delayed because of concerns raised by Iran.Naqvi later informed Islamabad that Iran was willing to attend the talks. Pakistan subsequently conveyed the development to Washington. Strait of Hormuz is once again a challengeThe strait has emerged as a key focus, with Iran’s joint military command saying on Saturday that it was closed again because of the U.S. “clear breach of its commitments” by failing to end the war. The interim deal is meant to stop fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon where Israeli forces are battling the militant Hezbollah group. The U.S. disputed Iran’s announcement, with the U.S. Central Command saying that traffic continues to flow and that 55 merchant ships transited on Saturday with more than 17 million barrels of oil.Ships began transiting after the interim U.S.-Iran agreement was signed last week. The U.S. lifted its blockade of Iran’s ports and now allows Tehran to sell its oil freely — terms that have left some in U.S. Congress asking whether the war was worth it. The interim deal signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian gives negotiators 60 days to reach a nuclear agreement, but the time can be extended.

(Andriy Andriyenko/Ukraine's 65th Mechanized Brigade via AP)2026-06-21T09:43:43Z Officials in Russia-occupied Crimea suspended civilian gasoline sales Sunday as Ukraine ramped up attacks on fuel supplies on the Black Sea peninsula.Gov. Sergey Aksyonov, the Kremlin-appointed head o Crimea, said that overnight Ukrainian strikes killed four people and wounded 28 others. He did not specify the target of the attack. He later wrote on social media that local gas stations would halt all sales to non-state companies and individuals for an undefined period.“Fuel will be sold only to government agencies that ensure the functioning and security of the Republic of Crimea,” Aksyonov said. “I ask everyone to remain calm and to only trust official sources of information.”Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted fuel supplies to Crimea in recent weeks, triggering the worst energy crisis in the region since it was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement Sunday that a Crimean oil depot, as well as an oil transport facility in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region were among the targets. He described the attacks as part of Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions” against Russia’s energy infrastructure. “Russia understands only strength, and our long-range strength is certainly working for peace,” he wrote.Russian officials in Krasnodar reported earlier Sunday that a drone strike sparked a fire at a Black Sea oil terminal in the village of Chushka. They said that Ukrainian attacks struck a ferry, killing one person. Read More Motorists struggle to find fuel The Crimean peninsula has had periodic fuel shortages from Ukrainian strikes before, but the current crisis is the worst since its 2014 annexation. At the end of May, authorities restricted the sale of gas to 20 liters (5 1/3 gallons) per vehicle owner per week, using prepaid coupons. Those were snapped up immediately following their release on an official messaging app channel, and motorists lined up for hours, waiting to refuel.Social networks have been abuzz with requests and advice on where to find fuel, and authorities launched a hotline for tourists in the area who have found themselves trapped. Some motorists bring their own gas from Krasnodar and elsewhere via the Kerch bridge, but they are restricted to carrying 100 liters (about 26 1/2 gallons) per vehicle. Some speculators are selling gas at double the market price. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. France restricts public alcohol consumption and outdoor sports as heat wave bakes parts of Europe

(AP Photo/Thibault Camus)2026-06-21T04:00:46Z PARIS (AP) — France put emergency services and military forces on wildfire alert, restricted public alcohol consumption and canceled some outdoor sports events to cope with a heat wave unfurling across parts of Europe. Multiple drowning deaths have been reported.About a third of France is under the heat red alert Sunday and temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday in some areas, in a country where air-conditioning isn’t widespread. The forecast for Monday is even hotter. The Eiffel Tower and other Paris venues set up misting stations to cool crowds, among a raft of measures announced by national and local authorities to minimize risks. Tourists in Rome sought relief in fountains. Spain’s Basque Country canceled some sports and cultural events. More than 200,000 people across Europe died from heat-related causes over the last four years, and most of the fatalities were preventable, the World Health Organization’s Europe office said this month. More above-average temperatures are expected this summer, which can cause heat exhaustion and life-threatening heat stroke. Human-caused climate change is tied to increasing extreme weather events and U.N. climate agency projections say the next five years should shatter more heat records. A rapid study found that human-caused climate change was responsible for killing about 1,500 people in an unusually early European heat wave last month. In this latest European hot spell, French media reported that four children drowned Saturday. Solstice parties draw large crowds in extreme heat France’s annual Music Day on Sunday is of particular concern. The nationwide summer solstice celebration involves thousands of concerts in village squares, rave venues and Paris clubs, bringing communities together and increasingly drawing British and other international visitors. The French government banned public drinking in ’’red alert″ zones, and ordered organizers of music day events to limit alcohol use to “preserve emergency services and allow medics to concentrate on taking care of the most vulnerable.”Some French trains were canceled, and the national rail authority dispatched thousands of extra staff to deal with potential problems as the heat threatened rails and electrical cables. Read More Authorities are notably worried about people living in the baking streets, and elderly people in nursing homes or isolated in their homes. About 15,000 older people died in France in a 2003 heat wave that became a national reckoning. The government announced reinforced wildfire readiness and ordered tightened surveillance of water supplies to France’s many nuclear reactors, and ordered 845 schools to close Monday. Spain, Italy, Germany swelter as tourists seek relief Spain kicked off the summer with large parts of the country on alert due to temperatures expected to hover around 40 C (104 F) — even in the interior of Basque Country, a northern region that typically experiences cooler temperatures.Authorities have suspended outdoor sports and cultural activities in the region. The heat wave is expected to scorch Spain at least through Wednesday. In Italy, authorities expanded heat warnings — referred to locally as “red flags” — to eight cities Sunday in northern and central parts of the country. Temperatures there are mostly in the upper 30s C (high 90s to low 100s F). Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. At one farm outside Milan, owners set up fans and sprinklers to keep cows cool. In Rome, tourists dunked their arms and occasionally their faces into the city’s famed fountain pools. Thunderstorms also threatened several regions. In Germany, temperatures are soaring into the mid 30s C (from 91 F to 97 F). A 23-year-old man drowned Saturday in a lake near Rheinstetten in the southwestern region of Baden-Württemberg, the German news agency dpa reported. Three other people are missing after swimming in the Rhine River, which has strong currents, a police spokeswoman told dpa.Britain’s weather office issued an “extreme heat” warning for much of southern England and parts of Wales on Monday and Tuesday, saying temperatures could exceed 35 C (95 F). The current record for a June day is 35.6 C (96 F), reached in 1976. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is convening a new government heat crisis meeting Sunday, and ordered government ministers to plan for better adapting France to heat waves in the future — including “via air conditioning, if necessary.”___Associated Press writers Derek Gatopoulos in Athens, Greece, Claudia Ciobanu in Warsaw, Poland, Jill Lawless in London and Teresa Medrano in Madrid contributed to this report.

Even when Stokes is cleared to resume his career and the captaincy, speculation will continue about the state of his relationship with head coach Brendon McCullum. All of England's management - Stokes, McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key - were backed after the dismal Ashes tour and now find themselves facing a crucial series decider.England have lost six of their past eight Tests, and the two wins were in extraordinary matches on substandard pitches in Melbourne and at Lord's. This is England's third successive defeat at The Oval.Yes, England can point to the disruption around this Test, but it was a self-inflicted wound.Allowances can be made for an XI with three debutants - Cox, James Rew and Sonny Baker - yet England have long identified these players as potential Test cricketers. New Zealand had their own disruption, with the retirement of Kane Williamson, whose replacement Henry Nicholls made a century.Trent Bridge will leave England nowhere to hide. With their best players available, on what should hopefully be a true pitch and against a strong New Zealand team, it is a must-win situation.Henry exposes Root againAny suggestion England could drag the match deep into the final day sat with Root, who began on 75.New Zealand are the latest opponents to pressure Root - and Harry Brook - with the wicketkeeper standing up to the stumps to seamers and the ploy worked again. With his seventh delivery of the day, the relentless Henry thudded the ball into Root's pad. Unlike Saturday, a review could not save Root, and England have a real quandary over how to counter-act Henry and New Zealand gloveman Tom Blundell. There was nothing Archer could do two balls later, when Henry got one to shoot low and into the stumps.Fisher had to rush to pad up and, when he arrived, chopped Henry on to his stumps. Tongue edged his first ball to first slip, leaving Henry screaming into the air in delight.Cox survived the hat-trick ball and entertained a healthy final-day crowd with some innovative strokes, until the sweep at Henry was one too many.Superb New Zealand go levelNew Zealand were caught cold on the substandard pitch at Lord's, yet here they were much too disciplined, skilful and wily for the callow England team. This is the first time New Zealand have played at The Oval since 1999, when a famous Kiwi series win led to England captain Nasser Hussain being booed by the home fans. Now the Black Caps have repeated the dose and have the chance for another series win at Trent Bridge. In the past 12 years, New Zealand are the only visiting team to win a Test series in this country and the class of 2026 could do it again.Henry was magnificent. One wonders what carnage he could have caused at Lord's had he not been hampered by a back spasm. He was backed up by the aggression of Kyle Jamieson and Will O'Rourke.Nicholls eased into the void left by Williamson, the left-hander's second-innings ton following on from the brave century made by Glenn Phillips in the first innings.New Zealand are settled, no-frills and battle-hardened - everything England are not.Get cricket news sent straight to your phone

LONDON (AP) — New Zealand won The Oval test by 253 runs after routing England for 209 just 48 minutes into the fifth and final day Sunday. The crushing win followed England's own big win at Lord's and sends the series to a decider in Nottingham starting on Thursday.England resumed on 182-5 with an improbable target of 463 and fast bowler Matt Henry took the last five wickets. The metronomic Henry gave a masterclass with a spell of 5-3 in 5.1 overs. They earned him 6-29 in the innings and, after his 5-80 in the first innings, 11-109 in the match, the best-ever match figures by a New Zealand bowler against England.Henry also achieved his first 10-wicket match haul in his 35th test.___AP cricket: https://apnews.com/hub/cricket

Wales' next generation getting a taste of Test life
Anwen Owen, Freya Bell and Lily Hawkins have played in Celtic Challenge with Gwalia Lightning [Huw Evans Picture Agency]After a Six Nations that was hit by injuries to key players, Wales are having a look at the next generation this summer.Sean Lynn's side will face the Barbarians at Allianz Stadium in Twickenham on Saturday (17:00 BST) after the men's fixture in the double-header.It is a chance for Wales to start building towards WXV Global Series, with the Premiership Women's Rugby (PWR) play-offs also pushing the management towards looking at young talent.Experienced players are likely to feature against the Baa-Baas but bright prospects have been brought in for an eye-opener at the Vale Resort."The door is open for selection, and this is a good opportunity for our younger players to taste what is expected at international level," said head coach Lynn when announcing his 33-strong squad.Holmes sees progress as Wales look to next generationJames takes over as Wales scrum coachNorth to bid farewell for Barbarians against WalesThe boss bemoaned the loss of Alex Callender, Kate Williams, Gwen Crabb, Nel Metcalfe and Lisa Neumann during the Six Nations, when his record moved on to 14 losses in 15 Tests. The pressure is mounting after three wooden spoons on the bounce, but Wales believe there is exciting talent that can eventually bring brighter times in this World Cup cycle.Players are pushing for international honours in a year that ends with September fixtures against South Africa and USA in Cardiff plus two away October Tests in Japan. From exams to Test campLily Hawkins made her first Gwalia Lightning start in February [Huw Evans Picture Agency]Lily Hawkins sat A-level exams in biology and physical education (PE) earlier this month before linking up with the national squad. The Coleg Gwent student started the season aiming to have a leadership role with Wales Under-18s, and possibly train with Gwalia Lightning.Instead, the 18-year-old scrum-half from New Tredegar scored a try on her Lightning debut and is now learning from Wales' best."It has been a bit of a hectic year," she said. "I have gone from college to PDC (Player Development Centre), to under-18s, to Gwalia, to under-21s, to seniors."I have loved it all and they have been great opportunities. Whatever comes, whether it is expected or not, I put 100% in."Hawkins balanced revision with rugby and intends to extend her studying at Cardiff Met next year. The teenage half-back – who says her biggest asset is effort – will push Keira Bevan and Seren Lockwood ahead of the Barbarians game in a first taste of senior international standards."It's been intense and the level goes up," she said. "Quite a few youngsters have come into the environment."It's a great opportunity and test for us. Anything that comes now is just a bonus."Freya Bell caught the eye of Wales coach Sean Lynn playing for Cardiff Met [Huw Evans Picture Agency]Wales gave reason for optimism in round two of the Six Nations when a strong finish earned a four-try bonus against Grand Slam winners England.Freya Bell won her first cap in the 62-24 loss in front of 26,247 fans at Bristol's Ashton Gate the week after the centre had been vice-captain for Wales Under-21s against France at Cardiff Arms Park."It's been a bit of a whirlwind and I've had a bit of a crazy year. To make my debut against England was an incredible experience," said Bell, who also came off the bench in Ireland."I had been injured and was just hoping to be back for the Under-21s, so getting called up to the senior squad was amazing and I didn't expect it at all. I just want to play more now."Injuries to Hannah Dallavalle and Carys Cox opened the door for Bell, who caught the eye of Lynn playing for Cardiff Met."He has told me to just play to my strengths, to be a confident ball player and carry hard," she said."I am quite a physical player who likes to tackle hard and carry hard."After an unexpected chance in the Six Nations, Bell will hope to keep pushing the seniors over the coming months.Following Jac Morgan's leadAnwen Owen played for Cwmtwrch and Nelson Belles [Huw Evans Picture Agency]While Hawkins and Bell have enjoyed rapid rises, Anwen Owen has reaped the rewards of persistence.Formerly a centre, the 24-year-old is now aiming to follow in the footsteps of Jac Morgan by becoming an international flanker from Cwmtwrch RFC.The Cardiff Met student got her foot in the door thanks to her exploits with Gwalia Lightning in Celtic Challenge."I started playing rugby when I was four and it's always been a dream to come into Wales squad and hopefully represent my country," said Owen."There have been a lot of tears – happy and sad – through highs and lows to get to this level. When here you just have to take it in your stride, grab the opportunity and enjoy the moment."Owen gets the chance to pick the brains of established back-rowers Alex Callender and Alisha Joyce."It's been intense to come into the set-up, and to try and keep up that standard is a good kind of tough," she said."There are a lot of youngsters coming through and we have to try to make it harder for the coaches to pick the team."

Inside the high speed world of Olympic speed skating with Brittany Bowe
Olympic speed skating is a sport defined by precision, endurance, and extreme mental focus. For athletes like Brittany Bowe, every race is a test of physical strength and psychological control. Competing on ice at speeds reaching up to 36 miles per hour, skaters push their bodies to the absolute limit while racing against both time and gravity. The difference between victory and defeat can come down to fractions of a second, making every moment on the track critically important.Brittany Bowe, an Olympic long track speed skater, describes the intense atmosphere that surrounds each competition. Even before stepping onto the ice, the environment is filled with noise, movement, and pressure as other skaters race around the oval. However, the moment she enters the rink, everything changes. Her focus becomes extremely narrow, allowing her to tune out distractions and concentrate entirely on performance. This shift in mindset is essential for competing at the highest level of the sport.Speed skating itself is a demanding discipline that takes place on a large oval track. While Olympic events are held indoors, much of an athlete’s training happens outdoors in freezing conditions, often in snow and harsh weather. This combination of controlled competition environments and extreme training conditions helps athletes build both resilience and technical skill. Races are short but incredibly intense, requiring perfect balance, timing, and stamina. One of the most challenging aspects of the sport is the moment just before the race begins. Athletes must remain calm while simultaneously managing rising adrenaline and nerves. According to Bowe, this creates a powerful mental conflict where the body is ready to explode into motion while the mind tries to stay composed. During the race itself, her senses become highly focused, almost isolating her from everything except the track and her movements. The physical demands of speed skating are equally extreme. As athletes round the corners of the track at high speed, they experience intense gravitational forces that pull against their bodies. This pressure places enormous strain on the legs, often creating a burning sensation that feels overwhelming. Despite this discomfort, skaters must maintain control, technique, and speed without losing momentum or balance.Crossing the finish line brings a powerful release of emotion and relief. After enduring intense physical pain and mental pressure, seeing a winning time or position makes the entire effort worthwhile. For athletes like Brittany Bowe, success is not just about medals or records. It is about pushing beyond limits, mastering control under pressure, and proving what the human body and mind are capable of achieving on the ice.

Pollard overtakes Gayle as record T20 run-scorer
Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has overtaken compatriot Chris Gayle as the record run-scorer in T20 cricket. Pollard, 39, moved to 14,583 runs with a century for MI New York in Major League Cricket, climbing above Gayle's tally of 14,562. The right-hander scored 1,569 runs in T20 internationals, with the rest coming in List A T20s around the world in domestic and franchise cricket. Gayle, who last played a competitive T20 in 2022, had led the standings since March 2014.It is a record that could change hands numerous times in the coming months with former England opener Alex Hales sitting 134 runs behind in third and Jos Buttler in fourth and 212 runs behind. Buttler could play up to eight T20s for England between July and September. Pollard is also the record T20 appearance holder with 736. He is combining playing and coaching currently. He was batting coach for Mumbai Indians during the Indian Premier League and will be head coach at MI London in the men's Hundred this summer. Pollard's landmark came in a 30-run defeat for MI New York against Washington Freedom and was only his second century in T20 cricket. He is the only middle-order batter in the top six of the standings, with the other five openers or top-order batters. Gayle was the fastest batter to each landmark between 6,000 and 14,000 T20 runs.He holds the record for the most sixes in T20 cricket with 1,056 - Pollard is 70 behind. Gary Lineker makes ITV guest appearance at the World Cup and takes aim at the BBC
Photo by Samir Hussein/WireImageGary Lineker has spent decades as a fixture of World Cup coverage, and he could not resist getting involved again — just not on the channel viewers were used to seeing him on.The presenter left the BBC last year after 26 years fronting Match of the Day, his exit arriving abruptly following a row over his social media posts. He had even been lined up to lead the corporation’s tournament coverage before those plans were scrapped.Instead, Lineker turned up as a studio guest on ITV during Germany’s Group E meeting with Ivory Coast. He was his usual entertaining self, sharing a joke with anchor Laura Woods and slipping in a sly dig at his old employers.Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty ImagesGary Lineker makes two BBC references during World Cup guest appearanceLineker joined ITV’s panel alongside Ian Wright, Gary Neville and Duncan Ferguson, having made the short trip to the broadcaster’s studio in New York. When the broddcast was coming to a close, Lineker began: “Thank you very much for joining us on ITV for this one! Another day, another game, another channel…”Woods played along with a mock objection, telling him: “That’s my job!”Lineker, smirking, replied: “Sorry, Laura. Old habits…”It was a knowing nod to the 26 years he spent presenting Match of the Day before leaving the BBC.His second reference was aimed at the setting. The BBC chose to base its World Cup coverage in Salford rather than send its team across the Atlantic, a decision that has drawn criticism — and ITV’s New York skyline backdrop offered the former England striker the chance to take another pop.He said: “We are in Times Square, but I desperately wanted to come and see your set, and I can confirm it’s real! What a backdrop!”It was all quite light-hearted, but there is definitely lingering resentment and rightly so. Seeing the 65-year-old back in front of our television sets was a reminder of the kind of entertainment and fun he brings to his punditry.Hopefully, we see plenty more of Lineker over the coming weeks.READ MORE: Gary Lineker asked if USA can win the World Cup and his answer was brutal

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the leading run-scorer in this year's IPL [Getty Images]Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi struck a remarkable 11-ball fifty for India A, breaking the record for the fastest half-century in the history of List A 50-over cricket. The 15-year-old's latest remarkable feat came for India A against Sri Lanka A as he made 94 off 29 balls in a total of 377-9, a knock that included 10 fours and eight sixes. He faced just one dot ball in his fifty and hit five fours and five sixes from the other 10 balls to bring up the landmark. Sooryavanshi's knock came on the same day that he was not included in India's full squad for the upcoming one-day international series against England. He has been named in their T20 side for matches against both Ireland and England next month, when he could make his international debut after an incredible rise which has included being this year's leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League (IPL).Virat Kohli could return to the ODI side if he passes a fitness test after a hamstring injury, while fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is also included but batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and all-rounder Hardik Pandya miss out.
