SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEgypt hopes to continue rise of African football with first-ever World Cup win against New ZealandVANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — History is on the horizon for Egypt, a favorite in Sunday’s World Cup match against New Zealand. Not only could the 28th-ranked Pharaohs get their first World Cup win against the No. 83 All Whites, they also would be in strong position to make the knockout round. The match “is everything in our world for the moment,” Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said Saturday in comments translated from Arabic.Their pursuit of history is part of a larger surge in African soccer's global standing. The expanded 48-team pool at this year’s tournament helped give African teams more representation and a chance to show they belong at the top level of international soccer. A record 10 teams are representing the continent at the World Cup, Egypt among them.“The national squads of Africa have proven their great performance many times at the World Cup, including this one,” Hassan said.At the 2022 World Cup, Morocco made a memorable run to the semifinals.Other African teams have made their mark on this World Cup already, with Ghana and Ivory Coast winning their opening matches against Panama and Ecuador, respectively. Four African teams, including Egypt, played to a draw in their opening matches. The Pharaohs’ 1-1 draw against Belgium gave them their first World Cup point since 1990. They carried a lead into halftime against Belgium, the first time they had done so at the World Cup. In fact, the match against Belgium was only the second time Egypt had ever had a lead against an opponent at all in the tournament.Morocco staved off five-time champion Brazil, Congo escaped with a draw against Portugal and Cape Verde stunned tournament favorite Spain, holding it scoreless in a 0-0 draw. From a continent on the rise, Egypt has emerged as a powerhouse. Seven-time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Pharaohs want to demonstrate that their prowess extends outside of Africa at this year’s World Cup.“We want to represent African football and Arab football,” said Hassan, Egypt’s all-time leading goal scorer and a key player for the Pharaohs at the 1990 World Cup.Hassan’s experience helped propel an Egyptian squad headlined by stars Mo Salah and Omar Marmoush back into the tournament after missing out in 2022.Salah sits two goals shy of matching his coach’s record. The squad also features a solid lineup of younger players, including 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim. Abdelkarim made his international debut with the senior team in a friendly against Russia just last month, the latest debutant in a new generation of African stars. We want to live up to the aspirations of the Egyptian fans,” Hassan said. “I only think about bringing happiness to our fans.”After New Zealand, the Pharaohs face Iran in Seattle for the last match in the group stage. As Egypt closes in on history, the team plays for its fans and nation – and also for Africa.__Connor Joyce is a student in the University of Georgia’s Carmical Sports Media Institute.__ AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLow sign-up numbers lead to City Golf Championship cancellationJOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The annual City Golf Championship at Berkley Hills Golf Course has been canceled for this year. The three-round event was scheduled to take place next Friday through Sunday at the City of Johnstown-owned course in Upper Yoder Township.“Honestly, the main reason is just very low sign-ups,” Derek Hayes, manager of Berkley Hills, said. “Unfortunately, they have been kinda decreasing over the last couple years. We just hit a point this year where it’s so low that I just think it’s not even going to be a tournament. Having 10-ish people in an event really doesn’t constitute a tournament. So that just kinda made it a relatively easy decision to have to cancel.“I’m not a huge fan of it, but you obviously can’t force people to play, so there’s not much control we have in that aspect.”The tournament began in 1938.It was held every year until a two-year hiatus in 2013 and 2014.The event restarted in 2015 after Hayes’ company, Royal Berkshire, took over management.“I’m not sure what the future brings, but if there’s an opportunity to start it up again, I would certainly do my part, if that’s an option,” Hayes said.Hayes won the event in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPHOTO GALLERY | Grant Roscich's long putt on 18th hole seals Sunnehanna Amateur championshipThe 85th Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions appeared to be headed to a three-way playoff Saturday afternoon.University of North Carolina golfer Grant Roscich had other ideas.PHOTO GALLERY | Grant Roscich finishes 10-under-par to win Sunnehanna Amateur TourneyRoscich, who throughout the week spoke about bringing patience and consistency to the par-70 Sunnehanna Country Club course, heeded his own advice.Roscich made a 25-foot birdie putt from the edge of the 18th green, playing in the final group during the final round. The Glen Ellyn, Illinois, native secured a one-stroke win at 10-under-par 200.“The entire day, the putts weren’t dropping,” Roscich said, “but like I’ve said the last few days – patience and consistency. I was being patient with it, letting it happen rather than trying to do anything with it. I made a good putt and it went in.”Gabriel Palacios, from Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Jake Birdwell, of Blaine, Minnesota, finished in a tie for second place at 9-under 201. Palacios had a 7-under 63 Saturday, and Birdwell shot 1-under 69 in the final round. For the first time in 10 years – and the fourth occasion in Sunnehanna Amateur history – the tournament was shortened from 72 to 54 holes after Thursday’s scheduled second round was suspended and eventually canceled due to gusting winds. The winds persisted throughout the week, including Saturday, but nothing as impactful as Thursday.“I felt like it was playing harder than on any other day. It was pretty windy throughout the day,” said Roscich, who began the final round with a one-stroke lead at 9-under. “It was a different wind. Most of the days, it’s been the same wind. Today was a little bit different and it was kind of hard adjusting to that.”Roscich shot a 1-under 69 after opening the tournament with a 5-under 65 Wednesday and recording a 4-under 66 Friday. He made the turn at even-par 35 in the final round, then paired a bogey on the par-three 10th hole with a birdie on the par-five 11th before reeling off six straight pars through 17.His approach on 18 landed within a few feet of the flag, but bounced and rolled to the edge of the green. Making par seemed like a reasonable objective, but Roscich's putt headed toward the hole and slowly dropped in, setting off a loud cheer among the fans encircling the green.“It’s a bad thought, but I was just thinking about the cars on the right and I’m like, ‘Just don’t do it over there,’ ” Roscich said, referring to the vehicles in the parking lot behind the trees adjacent to the 18th green.“ ‘The pin’s back right. Anywhere on the left, even the rough is good,’ ” he said, explaining the reasoning ahead of his second shot. “I hit a good wedge shot, just didn’t spin. I had 25 feet there.”Birdwell played in the final group with Roscich and Peter Kim, who tied for fourth at 6-under 204 with Matt Vogt and Jake Albert. The University of Illinois golfer began the final round at 8-under in sole possession of second place. Birdwell held the lead at 10-under after a birdie on No. 11.After three pars, he hit a rough spot, making bogeys on 15 and 16. Instead of a collapse, Birdwell recovered with a birdie on 17 to set a three-way tie at 9-under.“I missed that putt on 16 and told myself, ‘Now, I’ve got to make a birdie,’ ” Birdwell said. “There is no just coasting in with pars. You’ve got to make something.”Birdwell worked out of another tough spot on 18. His second shot soared over the green and into a bunker below the scoreboard located next to the bleachers. He chipped onto the green and saved par.“I’m surprised my drive got through to be honest,” Birdwell said of his approach on 18. “I didn’t think I hit it that far. The bunker was 350 and it was playing uphill 20 yards. It’s surprising.”Roscich’s long putt had already sealed the win before Birdwell’s final putt for par.“Congrats to Grant,” Birdwell said. “That was a good putt. I thought I was going to be able to get in a playoff, but he was scaring the hole all day.”Palacios had the best final round among the leaders. The University of Utah player entered Saturday’s competition at a respectable 2-under, but wasn’t near the top of the leaderboard. Then, Palacios got hot.His bogey-free round included birdies on 8, 10, 12, 15 and 17. Palacios made an eagle on the par-five No. 11.“I hit a good shot on 10 and put to 3 or 4 feet,” Palacios said. “I birdied that one and gave myself a look on 11, which I made. I put it close again on 12. I was able to convert those 5-to-6 footers, which were key to shooting this round.”Palacios nearly birdied the final hole, but his putt stopped an inch short of the cup.“That was close,” Palacios said. “That would’ve been nice.”0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews -

"He really stepped up his game in all phases and was a big reason why we won 19 games."Jr., P/SS/First Baseman, MontevideoGriffin Epema is the only non-senior to make the All-Area First Team, and quite frankly, it's well-deserved.Already a commit to the NCAA Division I University of St. Thomas, Epema possessed a 6-2 record and two saves with a startling 1.09 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched. He also batted an eye-popping .460 on 40 hits (nine doubles, five triples) with 31 runs, 24 RBIs, 23 stolen bases and 16 walks.Epema, who was named the conference's MVP, earned Class AA All-State, All-Section 3AA and All-West Central honors."Griffin is a very high IQ baseball player who has a great determination to win," Tim Epema said.Sr., Utility/P, MinnewaskaA do-it-all superstar, Connor Erickson's bat was up there as one of the most lethal.Erickson, committed to the NCAA Division III Concordia College-Moorhead, had a .478 batting average and a 1.450 on-base-plus-slugging percentage on 37 hits (16 doubles, five home runs) with a jaw-dropping 42 RBIs and 33 runs.An All-Section 3AA and All-West Central pick, Erickson played all nine positions, which included a .957 fielding percentage and a 4-2 record on the mound."Connor exemplifies every quality in a young man that everyone dreams of coaching," Lakers head coach Joe Alexander said. "On the field, he is one of the best players to play Minnewaska baseball with stats great enough to make it the second best season in school history. Off the field, Connor is a tremendous young man who is very active in his church and all of his communities. ... His presence in our dugout will definitely be missed and almost impossible to replace."Sr., Catcher, LitchfieldLitchfeld could always lean on Tripp McCann to provide them firepower.McCann, who is committed to the NJCAA Division III St. Cloud Technical and Community College, hit for .423 on 33 hits (five home runs, five doubles, one triple) with 28 RBIs, 26 runs, 18 walks and 18 stolen bases. He ends his prep career as a Class AA All-State, All-Section 5AA and All-Wright County selection."Tripp had a phenomenal year hitting, finishing top five in four single-season categories and top 10 in several others," Dragons head coach Jeff Wollin said. "His positive, unselfish, team-first attitude was always present and was a big reason for any success our team had this spring."Sr., OF, LitchfieldOne of the speediest contact hitters out there, Alex Medina had an exceptional spring.Medina batted .404 on 36 hits (10 doubles, a school-record five triples, two home runs) with 33 runs, 19 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.A commit to the NCAA Division III Concordia College-Moorhead for football and possibly baseball, he wraps up his prep career as a Class AA All-State, All-Section 5AA and All-Wright County pick."Alex had an incredible senior season — both offensively, finishing top five in four single-season categories, and defensively, running down almost everything that didn't leave the ballpark — while leading his team to a 18-8 record," Wollin said. "But, what he does off the field, as a student, classmate and role model is equally impressive. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRory McIlroy insults fan after abuse shouted at him at US Open in New YorkPhoto by Tracy Wilcox/PGA TOUR via Getty ImagesIt wasn’t the US Open Rory McIlroy was hoping for at Shinnecock Hills. He was in contention going into the back nine on Saturday, but a string of bogeys on the back left him well off the pace, and a poor Sunday capped off a disappointing week. One of the big storylines entering the week was how McIlroy would be received by the New York crowd. They hit him with a barrage of abuse at the Ryder Cup last year, so would that continue at Shinnecock? In the week’s build-up to the US Open, McIlroy said the crowd had been welcoming to him. The Ryder Cup was a totally different event, and the Northern Irishman was back to being a fan favourite.Unfortunately, the pleasantries didn’t last the entire tournament.Photo by Warren Little/Getty ImagesRory McIlroy insults heckling fan at the US OpenDuring his final round at Shinnecock, one of the New York fans relentlessly heckled McIlroy during his tee shot. After McIlroy hit his driver, they repeatedly shouted, “get in the bunker”, and followed with some indiscernible heckling as McIlroy headed back to his bag.It looked as if McIlroy was going to completely ignore the fan, but as he walked off the tee box, he glared at his heckler before motioning his arms in front of his stomach to call the fan overweight. The fans laughed, and the heckler sounded totally shocked by McIlroy’s response. It was an apt clapback, as the Masters champion didn’t even need a word to win the exchange. What Rory McIlroy said about New York fans at the start of the US OpenFor the most part, it was a pleasant reunion for McIlroy and the New York fans. Speaking in the week, he explained how much he loves playing in New York.McIlroy said, “Look, I love playing around New York. I love playing in this area. It’s got some of the best golf in the world.“This is a different — like the Ryder Cup is us versus them, very partisan, very — like it’s just a different beast. So, yeah, I have no — yeah, was it a rough week for me at times? Absolutely. But it is what it is. If that’s a price to pay to live the life that I’m living, then I’m okay with that.”It’s a shame it didn’t last the entire tournament, but one bad fan doesn’t come close to resembling the abuse he received at the Ryder Cup.READ MORE: Tyrrell Hatton delivers his verdict on the way the USGA set up Shinnecock for the US Open0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJamahal Hill bluntly says viral Alex Pereira clash at UFC PI was stagedPhoto by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty ImagesJamahal Hill and Alex Pereira appeared to nearly come to blows at the UFC Performance Institute in December 2024.The viral clip showed Hill confronting Pereira before the Brazilian threw sparring gloves towards him.A year and a half later, the former light-heavyweight champion has now set the record straight about what really happened.Jamahal Hill says Alex Pereira gym confrontation was plannedPhoto by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty ImagesHill now claims the entire scene was staged to build interest in a rematch with Pereira. That changes the context of a clip many fans saw as real tension after Pereira’s first-round knockout win over Hill at UFC 300.The former light-heavyweight champion told Home of Fight that he and the Brazilian star were never genuinely enemies.“Me and him are cool, bro. There’s never been any beef, there’s never been any animosity. We’ve never had to be separated or any of those things,” he began by saying.Hill then explained why the UFC PI moment happened.“There was the video… We planned that. That was for us to try to hype up a fight between the two of us, before the Magomed [Ankalaev]. I was trying to jump the line over Magomed.”At the time, it seemed like Hill was still chasing revenge after losing his title shot against Pereira. Now, he shockingly says it was simply promotion. It also shows how quickly UFC narratives can be manufactured around real competitive stakes.Read more:Josh Hokit blasts Daniel Cormier after ex-UFC champ criticised his Michelle Obama commentsArman Tsarukyan opens up on new fate of truck Justin Gaethje refused after Ilia Topuria winJustin Gaethje not sure Ilia Topuria will be the same after first career loss0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIran coach hails 'great achievement' after second World Cup drawIran's head coach Amir Ghalenoei hailed his team's performance against Belgium (Frederic J. Brown)Coach Amir Ghalenoei hailed Iran's unbeaten start to the World Cup as a "great achievement" that will be remembered by future generations, following a 0-0 draw with Belgium on Sunday.Having arrived at the tournament under the shadow of war between Tehran and Washington, Iran have drawn both their opening games, and remain in with a chance to qualify for the knockout rounds for the first time.Ghalenoei praised his players for holding Belgium, ranked 10th in the world, to a stalemate in Los Angeles on Sunday despite facing the strain of considerable visa and travel restrictions in the United States."This is a great achievement. We've had two games without losing in the World Cup, with the conditions that we've had," he said."We had less than 16 hours to get to do training before the game," he said, after his team was not permitted to travel early to the US from their base camp in Mexico."This is a great achievement, and it will be written about in the history of our football, and future generations will talk about this."Before the game, the Iran anthem was booed by members of Los Angeles' extensive Persian exile community, who oppose the country's hardline regime. But the team itself was vocally supported by a majority of the packed stadium."I want to thank all the Iranians, with different attitudes regarding politics. They supported us, and they gave us energy," said Ghalenoei.Ghalenoei said that despite Belgium having Nathan Ngoy sent off in the 66th minute, Iran were "lucky not to lose" given the strength of the opposition."I don't think any team in the world could have really sustained with such conditions, and played like this -- the conditions have been extremely hard for us," he said."Our players are really giving everything, they are playing with their heart."In an evenly poised Group G, Iran must secure at least a point in their final game against Egypt, which will take place in Seattle next Friday."Tomorrow we need to focus on the game with Egypt. Egypt is a very strong team, they have very good players. Our first and utmost aim is to reach the next round," said the manager.Iran midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh also paid tribute to the team's "spirit" and "amazing performance."He said the team would draw upon the experience of narrowly failing to progress from their group at the last World Cup, when they crashed out after a 1-0 defeat to the United States."Last World Cup, we tried to do the best thing, but very last minute, we couldn't do it," he said."But now I think the most important thing is we go to recover well, to make sure that we are ready for the next game."amz/rcw0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

APNEWS.COMOh, brother! Brady Tkachuk getting traded to Florida to join Matthew Tkachuk, AP source saysUnited States' Brady Tkachuk (7) and Matthew Tkachuk (19) celebrate after the United States' win over Canada in the men's ice hockey gold medal game at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, Feb. 22, 2026. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)2026-06-21T22:23:02Z Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk are about to team up in Florida, after the Panthers pulled off another summertime blockbuster. The Panthers and Ottawa were finalizing a deal where Florida would send four draft picks to the Senators for Brady Tkachuk, a person familiar with the terms said Sunday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither team had released details publicly. The picks were Florida’s first-rounder this year, No. 9 overall, along with two picks acquired earlier Sunday in the Panthers’ move to send Mackie Samoskevich to Seattle, and another first-rounder in 2029.Brady Tkachuk has spent the entirety of his eight-year NHL career in Ottawa, and now he joins his brother, Olympic teammate and podcast co-host in Florida — the place where Matthew Tkachuk has spent the last four seasons, winning two Stanley Cups and getting to the final three times. The Athletic was first to report the pending trade.Brady Tkachuk has two seasons left on the seven-year, $57.56 million contract he signed in October 2021 when he also became Ottawa’s captain. As recently as late April, he bristled at conversation about his name being in trade rumors following a first-round playoff exit. It’s a move that makes sense for so many reasons and has seemed almost inevitable.Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk reveled in the chance to play alongside one another for USA Hockey at the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025 (winning silver) and the Milan Cortina Olympics this year (winning gold, the first for the American men’s program on the Olympic stage since the miracle in Lake Placid 46 years ago). Read More Their parents — their dad is NHL legend Keith Tkachuk — have a home in Florida and are regular attendees at Panthers games, and the USA Hockey ties means Brady Tkachuk already has relationships with many in the Florida organization. Bill Zito, Florida’s hockey operations president and general manager, had a role within USA Hockey during this past Olympic cycle and Panthers equipment manager Teddy Richards had a role with the 4 Nations and Milan Cortina teams as well. Brady Tkachuk was Ottawa’s captain for the last five seasons, and he was — by far in some cases — their leader in countless categories over his eight years with the Senators. No player had more goals (213), points (463), power-play goals (62), shots (2,202), hits (1,921), winning goals (28), multigoal games (30) and penalty minutes (821) in his tenure with the club, which acquired him with the No. 4 pick in the 2018 draft. And now, four years after landing Matthew Tkachuk, the Panthers have tapped into the Tkachuk family well of talent again. It also adds another big name to the list of players that Florida has locked up for several seasons going forward, including Aleksander Barkov, Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe, Gustav Forsling, Anton Lundell and others. They’re all Stanley Cup winners, and now Brady Tkachuk would figure to have a real chance to get his name etched onto hockey’s chalice in the coming years as well.___AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno contributed to this report.___AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl TIM REYNOLDS Reynolds is an Associated Press sports writer, based in South Florida. twitter mailto0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIran's challenges at World Cup swirl outside draw with BelgiumINGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Iran took another step toward advancing in the World Cup on Sunday, but once again the off-the-field play dominated the conversation. At the match's conclusion, at least one attendee wearing a pre-revolutionary flag shirt was detained for trying to run onto the pitch. And afterward, though demonstrations were quieter than Monday's, an Associated Press reporter observed a fan who got into a scuffle with protesters being loaded into an ambulance. But before the match had even kicked off, U.S. Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin said Sunday that the Iranians had “tried to get somebody in yesterday” who had direct ties to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. In a statement, the soccer federation vociferously pushed back.“The claim that an official representative of the Iranian Football Federation attempted to board a flight to enter the United States yesterday and was prevented from doing so is an outright and undeniable lie,” the statement said.Mullin told Fox News that most teams travel with around 120 people, but the U.S. had accepted 53 in Iran's case. He said the rest of the people Iran had tried to secure visas for had “direct ties to the IRGC and aren’t their normal traveling group.” The federation called Mullin's claims “completely unsupported by any evidence or documentation, but also represent a clear attempt to cover up discriminatory behavior and unreasonable restrictions.” That statement echoed Iran's complaints throughout the tournament that politics have infringed on soccer, even as U.S. Vice President JD Vance said there was an opportunity to “turn over a new leaf” with talks beginning in Switzerland on the interim deal to end the war. Iran’s players and coach have complained about shuttling to and from Mexico instead of Tucson, Arizona, and the barring of some officials and staff, and the federation has said it would pursue a complaint against FIFA.Iranian national team player Alireza Jahanbakhsh said after the match that he doesn’t want to keep focusing on the challenging situation, and that players are now focused on recovery and preparing to travel to Seattle for the next game, against Egypt. He said he hopes the team can head there as soon as possible to adapt.“We don’t ask for much. We just ask for the same procedure as for all the other 47 teams,” he said. “Hopefully we can bring everyone who is involved and help us with us.”At the stadium near Los Angeles, fans wearing green-and-red scarves, stickers and T-shirts were mixed on the impact of the team's shift to train across the border in Mexico. Some said the team was unfairly burdened, while others who followed the team to Tijuana were thrilled to get closer access to the players.Shamira Ghaemmaghami, 66, of nearby Orange County, said she was supporting the players from her native Iran and also from Belgium. She said she respects the right of protesters to voice their opinions but feels sports should unite people, not separate them.“Fighting over these things, sports and politics should not be mixed,” she said. “They worked so hard to get where they are, both sides, actually.”Outside the stadium, a few hundred people demonstrated against Iran's government. Aside from some verbal altercations and the scuffle after the match, the protests were smaller than at Iran's first game and featured more security from the outset. Inside, some fans carried the red-and-green flags emblazoned with a golden lion and sun that predate the 1979 Islamic Revolution — a flag that seemed at least as visible as the official flag of Iran itself. They were also joined by a sizable crowd of Belgium fans wearing red and yellow and those donning jerseys from countries including Argentina, the U.S. and Mexico.Gerald Martinez, 66, of Tucson, wore a green Iran scarf. While not Iranian, he and his son decided to support the team when they initially announced they'd be training in their hometown. “I wish they were all here. I wish they were welcome,” Martinez said, adding he felt the team was suffering a disadvantage.Stefan Arts, 42, traveled from Antwerp, Belgium, and said he's met many people who were Iranian but supporting his country’s team instead. That's how Arman Sharif, 40, of Los Angeles, feels. He was outside the stadium to protest and said he feels the players are allied with the government in Tehran. “Whoever it is, we're a fan of the opponents,” Sharif said. ___Associated Press reporters Ty ONeil, Gregory Bull and Andrew Dalton in Inglewood, California; Gabriela Aoun Angueira in San Diego and Thomas Strong in Washington contributed to this report.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWyndham Clark's dad celebrated U.S. Open title in cool Father's Day surpriseFor Wyndham Clark, Sunday was certainly a Father's Day that he won't forget anytime soon. The PGA golfer did not know that his dad, Randall, was going to be at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Sunday until the tournament was over with Clark greeting his family after the major championship. Randall, who had open-heart surgery in 2024, was not expected to be in Southampton, New York, to watch Wyndham's final round in person. But without telling his son, Randall reportedly took a red eye to New York and got to witness his son win the U.S. Open for the second time. The scene on the 18th green was especially awesome with Wyndham celebrating with family and friends only to turn around and see his dad. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMColorado native Wyndham Clark wins U.S. Open Golf title for 2nd timeFor the second time in four years, one of Colorado's own is the U.S. Open golf champion.Wyndham Clark held off early challenges and on to his big lead, ultimately winning the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York.Clark is now a two-time U.S. Open champion after winning his first career major title in the 2023 edition at Los Angeles Country Club. He finished with a four-day total score of 4-under-par 276 to take home the 2026 crown. The Denver native held a six-shot lead through 54 holes. Victory was hardly in hand, especially after some early charges from Sam Burns and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He struggled out the gate with a front-nine 38 that featured three bogeys and no birdies as his large lead dwindled to one.But Clark got up and down from a tough lie on No. 9 for par and then birdied the tough 10th via a remarkable spinning wedge shot to five feet. From there, he converted numerous scrambling pars down the stretch as the field largely fell back on a tough, firm final-round Sunday at Shinnecock Hills.Burns mounted one last charge, making a birdie to reach 3-under but missing short birdie putts on the last two holes that could have applied more pressure.Clark then made his own finishing statement, draining a long birdie putt on the par-5 16th hole following a wayward drive and nasty lie in the rough.Though he bogeyed the 17th hole, Clark rallied to par the 18th and seal the win.FIRE HIM UP 🔥 Wyndham Clark birdies hole 16 in the final round of the U.S. Open. 📺 NBC & Peacock pic.twitter.com/b90QiosAsu— NBC Sports (@NBCSports) June 21, 2026It was a wire-to-wire win for Clark, who led outright after every round. He is just the eighth player to do so in 126 U.S. Opens, joining golf legends like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Ben Hogan and Walter Hagen. The 2011 Valor Christian alumnus grew up in Highlands Ranch, playing and practicing at Cherry Hills Country Club.Clark won the 2009 and 2011 Colorado Class 4A individual state golf titles, including an eight-shot victory in 2011 with rounds of 64 and 64 at Pelican Lakes Golf Course in Pelican Lakes. After winning the U.S. Open and Wells Fargo Championship in 2023, Clark reached a career-high of No. 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings in April 2024 and played on Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup squads for the U.S.However, he struggled throughout much of 2025 and brought on Cherry Hills Director of Instruction Pat Coyner as his swing coach in September.Clark has surged since. This was his eighth top-20 finish in 2026, highlighted by a comeback win at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May with a final-round 60.Still, he has become a polarizing figure in the sport. Most notably, Clark reportedly damaged multiple lockers at historic Oakmont Country Club in a post-round outburst during the 2025 U.S. Open. He also was involved in a rules controversy at the 2024 Bay Hill tournament and prominently threw a club in anger at the 2025 PGA Championship. That meant Clark was far from a fan favorite on Long Island. Fans could regularly be heard rooting against Clark on the NBC broadcast.Still, Clark is a U.S. Open champion again, the sixth time a Colorado product has won golf's national championship.Hale Irwin (Boulder High School, University of Colorado alumnus) won the U.S. Open in 1974, 1979 and 1990. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMiyu Yamashita beats Lottie Woad in playoff to win Meijer LPGA titleMiyu Yamashita of Japan fired a final-round 64, then defeated England’s Lottie Woad on the first playoff hole to capture the Meijer LPGA Classic title on Sunday in Belmont, Michigan. The pair replayed the par-5 18th hole at Blythefield Country Club, where Yamashita got much closer to the pin than Woad on their third shots. Woad missed her birdie try and Yamashita rolled in a short putt for the win.The 2025 Women’s Open champion and LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Yamashita now has her third LPGA title and will move up to third in the Race for the CME Globe season-long points race.Yamashita, 24, began the day five strokes behind 54-hole leader Jing Yan.“It had like a score gap with the top” to begin the day, Yamashita said through a translator on the TV broadcast. “But this week I had really good feeling, so I’m really happy to win.”Woad nearly stole a memorable win when she holed out for birdie from the sand at the par-4 17th hole. That put her at 18 under and meant she needed to par No. 18 to win outright. But a 4-foot putt to clinch the title lipped out, and she took bogey and headed to the playoff.“Obviously 17 was pretty – a bonus,” Woad said. “Didn’t have the easiest bunker shot and obviously made it. Thought it was going a little bit past, so was happy with that.“Felt like I hit an OK putt (at No. 18). Obviously lipped out on the high side. Yeah, Miyu played great in the playoff hole.”Yamashita birdied five of her first seven holes to close the gap. She added birdies at Nos. 10, 11 and 13 before hitting her only speed bump with a bogey at the par-3 15th. Yamashita hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation during the round.Meanwhile, Yan – a 30-year-old vet seeking her first career win – was the second- and third-round leader but couldn’t keep up. She bogeyed twice and birdied twice in her first five holes and was stuck on 14 under for a while. After bogeying her final two holes, Yan signed for a 1-over 73 and tied for seventh at 13 under.Taiwan’s Wei-Ling Hsu and China’s Yan Liu posted matching 67s and tied for third at 15 under. His father works as a real estate agent now, but he had a brief career as a professional tennis player.Wyndham Clark said his father was the driving force behind his interest in golf. The two golfed together frequently and Randall helped his son improve his game during his youth."My mom first took me to play golf, but my dad was the one who really got me into golf," Clark explained at the U.S. Open. "He picked it up just a few years prior to me starting at the age of 3. Every time I’d go golf at a young age was with my dad."There’s so many memories of us leaving at 6 a.m., our family on like a family vacation, and we’d play golf and come back before noon and that was the only way my mom would let us do that. There’s a ton of memories. And then he took me to tournaments.Additionally, Clark credited his father with instilling in him the qualities needed to achieve success."He instilled in me hard work and discipline and I feel like I get a lot of my fieriness from him," Clark said. "My dad is a big reason why I’m out here.""Hopefully, (Sunday) can be a great Father’s Day for him," he added.Who is Wyndham Clark's mother?Lise Clark was Wyndham Clark's mother. She won Miss New Mexico in 1981 and worked as a national sales director for beauty company Mary Kay.She died on Aug. 2, 2013, at age 55 after a battle with breast cancer. Her death hit Wyndham — then 19 years old and playing college golf at Oklahoma State — hard. He considered quitting the sport, as he recounted to reporters at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this year.“I was playing terribly,” Clark said, per CNN. “There’s many times when I stormed off the golf course in qualifying or in tournaments and just drove as fast as I could, I didn’t know where I was going.“The pressure of golf and then not having my mom there and someone that I could call was really tough for me. Then professionally, I’ve had multiple moments like that where you just, you miss multiple cuts in a row or you feel like your game is good and you’re not getting much out of it and you just contemplate [walking away].“Max Homa has a great quote: ‘Every golfer’s one shot away from thinking they can win the Masters or one shot away from quitting golf.’ It really is a great quote because that’s the truth. I’m glad I stuck it out and am here now.”Clark stuck it out and hung on one of the messages his mother delivered to him before each of his tournaments.Play big.“When she was sick and I was in college, she told me, ‘Hey, play big,’” Clark said at the U.S. Open, per CNN."'Play for something bigger than yourself. You have a platform to either witness or help or be a role model for so many people.'"I've taken that to heart. When I’m out there playing, I want to do that for her. I want to show everyone the person I am and how much joy I have out there playing and hope I can inspire people to want to be like me and be better than me."Suffice to say that Lise was one of Clark's biggest supporters. Thus, it's no surprise that he has thought about her often during the U.S. Open."I wish she could be here, but I know she’s proud of me, and she’s made a huge impact on my life – I am who I am today because of her," Clark said. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBelgium frustrated by structured Iran, as Group G remains tight in 0-0 drawRomelu Lukaku #9 of Belgium and Saeid Ezatolahi #6 of Iran head the ball during a 2026 FIFA World Cup match, Sunday June 21, 2026 in Inglewood, Calif.INGLEWOOD, Calif. – G stands for “grind” as Group G saw its third draw in three games at this World Cup on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.Despite its dominance on the ball, Belgium was unable to find much danger in the final third, and after a free-kick goal was deemed offside on video review in the first half, Iran put up a gritty and structured defensive performance in a 0-0 draw.“We had the opportunity to win, but I think this is a great achievement,” Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said. “Future generations will talk about this. What a great achievement.”The favored Belgians have now scored just one goal–an Egyptian own goal in last week’s opener–in two group stage games, while Iran happily took its second point of the tournament. Now, either New Zealand and Egypt have a chance to take control of the group tonight in Vancouver.“When you’re not efficient, you can’t score,” Belgium coach Rudi Garcia said, “and if you don’t score, you can’t win a match.”If either New Zealand or Egypt win tonight, Belgium–the 10th-ranked team in the world–will be on the third-place bubble entering the final round of group play.Iran has an edge on total goals scored (two) and currently sits in second place, which puts Iran in line to advance out of the World Cup group stage for the first time in its history.“The group is not weak. When there are so few matches, you can’t miss an opportunity, and we did,” Garcia said. “We have to keep our head down.”With a multitude of scenarios for group placings and knockout round destinations still in the air, there will be simultaneous Pacific Northwest kickoffs to finish off the group stage on Friday.Belgium (0-1-0, 2 points) will play New Zealand (0-1-0, 1 point) in Vancouver, and Iran (0-2-0, 2 point) will face Egypt (0-1-0, 1 point) in Seattle with a multitude of scenarios for group placings and knockout round destinations. The Group G winner will face a third-place team from one of Groups A/E/H/I/J with the possibility of playing the United States in the Round of 16, should the USMNT win its Round of 32 match. The second-place team from Group G will play the second-place team from Group D–either Australia or Paraguay, depending on their result Thursday in Santa Clara–with the winner likely facing Argentina in the Round of 16.The top eight third-place teams of the 12 groups move on, and with both Belgium and Iran sitting on two points, the likelihood of advancing takes a hit. There are myriad permutations still to play out for the third-place scenarios, and a goal differential of zero helps. However you look at it, the only way for any of Group G to secure a spot forward is to win next week.“We need to beat New Zealand to move to the round of 32,” Garcia said. “I’m trusting in our players that they will be confident and win.”Nearly every single statistic favored Belgium except for the scoreline on Sunday in what continues to be a frustrating World Cup for the Red Devils.Belgium was without Manchester City striker Jeremy Doku, who was held out due to illness, but the Belgians were still dominant on the ball with around 70% possession for most of the match.Belgian defender Nathan Ngoy took a straight red card in the 66th minute–Ngoy mishandled the ball and pulled down the Iranian forward as the last defender–and despite playing down a man for 24 minutes, the Belgians still held a 23-7 advantage in shot attempts, 7-3 mark in shots on target and 19-4 lead in attempts inside the box.“In the first half, we got ahead of ourselves. We were wasteful,” Garcia said. “We lacked efficiency. We talked about verticality. We didn’t have much room. We could have done much better spacing ourselves out on the crosses.”“We expected to dominate, and we did. We played as we wanted to play.”Ultimately, Belgium still couldn’t break through thanks in part due to the stellar goalkeeping from Iran’s Alireza Beiranvand, who put up seven saves in a Man of the Match performance.“One of our greatest goalkeepers in the history of Iranian football,” Ghalenoei said. “He’s extremely intelligent, very experienced. He had one of his best days today. He had the right concentration and given us one very valuable point.”Iran played with an excellent defensive structure and looked to push back on the counterattack. The one area Belgium did not earn the edge in was forced turnovers, where Iran held a 31-23 advantage.Team Melli was also the only side to find the back of the net on Sunday, as Medhi Taremi scored off a crafty free kick in the 25th minute. However, it was just a step too crafty, as the video assistant referee determined Taremi was offside on the free kick.“We were very unlucky it was slightly offside,” Ghalenoei said. “We could have got three points. They could have got three points. We both had equal opportunities."Now, both Belgium and Iran have equal opportunity to put themselves through to the knockout rounds for next week. For Iran, it’s a chance they relish, and for Belgium, it shouldn’t have come down to this.“We need to focus on the next match and stay calm,” Garcia said.0 Comments 0 Shares 1 Views 0 Reviews
