SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEgypt hopes to continue rise of African football with first-ever World Cup win against New ZealandVANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — History is on the horizon for Egypt, a favorite in Sunday’s World Cup match against New Zealand. Not only could the 28th-ranked Pharaohs get their first World Cup win against the No. 83 All Whites, they also would be in strong position to make the knockout round. The match “is everything in our world for the moment,” Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said Saturday in comments translated from Arabic.Their pursuit of history is part of a larger surge in African soccer's global standing. The expanded 48-team pool at this year’s tournament helped give African teams more representation and a chance to show they belong at the top level of international soccer. A record 10 teams are representing the continent at the World Cup, Egypt among them.“The national squads of Africa have proven their great performance many times at the World Cup, including this one,” Hassan said.At the 2022 World Cup, Morocco made a memorable run to the semifinals.Other African teams have made their mark on this World Cup already, with Ghana and Ivory Coast winning their opening matches against Panama and Ecuador, respectively. Four African teams, including Egypt, played to a draw in their opening matches. The Pharaohs’ 1-1 draw against Belgium gave them their first World Cup point since 1990. They carried a lead into halftime against Belgium, the first time they had done so at the World Cup. In fact, the match against Belgium was only the second time Egypt had ever had a lead against an opponent at all in the tournament.Morocco staved off five-time champion Brazil, Congo escaped with a draw against Portugal and Cape Verde stunned tournament favorite Spain, holding it scoreless in a 0-0 draw. From a continent on the rise, Egypt has emerged as a powerhouse. Seven-time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Pharaohs want to demonstrate that their prowess extends outside of Africa at this year’s World Cup.“We want to represent African football and Arab football,” said Hassan, Egypt’s all-time leading goal scorer and a key player for the Pharaohs at the 1990 World Cup.Hassan’s experience helped propel an Egyptian squad headlined by stars Mo Salah and Omar Marmoush back into the tournament after missing out in 2022.Salah sits two goals shy of matching his coach’s record. The squad also features a solid lineup of younger players, including 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim. Abdelkarim made his international debut with the senior team in a friendly against Russia just last month, the latest debutant in a new generation of African stars. We want to live up to the aspirations of the Egyptian fans,” Hassan said. “I only think about bringing happiness to our fans.”After New Zealand, the Pharaohs face Iran in Seattle for the last match in the group stage. As Egypt closes in on history, the team plays for its fans and nation – and also for Africa.__Connor Joyce is a student in the University of Georgia’s Carmical Sports Media Institute.__ AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLow sign-up numbers lead to City Golf Championship cancellationJOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The annual City Golf Championship at Berkley Hills Golf Course has been canceled for this year. The three-round event was scheduled to take place next Friday through Sunday at the City of Johnstown-owned course in Upper Yoder Township.“Honestly, the main reason is just very low sign-ups,” Derek Hayes, manager of Berkley Hills, said. “Unfortunately, they have been kinda decreasing over the last couple years. We just hit a point this year where it’s so low that I just think it’s not even going to be a tournament. Having 10-ish people in an event really doesn’t constitute a tournament. So that just kinda made it a relatively easy decision to have to cancel.“I’m not a huge fan of it, but you obviously can’t force people to play, so there’s not much control we have in that aspect.”The tournament began in 1938.It was held every year until a two-year hiatus in 2013 and 2014.The event restarted in 2015 after Hayes’ company, Royal Berkshire, took over management.“I’m not sure what the future brings, but if there’s an opportunity to start it up again, I would certainly do my part, if that’s an option,” Hayes said.Hayes won the event in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPHOTO GALLERY | Grant Roscich's long putt on 18th hole seals Sunnehanna Amateur championshipThe 85th Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions appeared to be headed to a three-way playoff Saturday afternoon.University of North Carolina golfer Grant Roscich had other ideas.PHOTO GALLERY | Grant Roscich finishes 10-under-par to win Sunnehanna Amateur TourneyRoscich, who throughout the week spoke about bringing patience and consistency to the par-70 Sunnehanna Country Club course, heeded his own advice.Roscich made a 25-foot birdie putt from the edge of the 18th green, playing in the final group during the final round. The Glen Ellyn, Illinois, native secured a one-stroke win at 10-under-par 200.“The entire day, the putts weren’t dropping,” Roscich said, “but like I’ve said the last few days – patience and consistency. I was being patient with it, letting it happen rather than trying to do anything with it. I made a good putt and it went in.”Gabriel Palacios, from Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Jake Birdwell, of Blaine, Minnesota, finished in a tie for second place at 9-under 201. Palacios had a 7-under 63 Saturday, and Birdwell shot 1-under 69 in the final round. For the first time in 10 years – and the fourth occasion in Sunnehanna Amateur history – the tournament was shortened from 72 to 54 holes after Thursday’s scheduled second round was suspended and eventually canceled due to gusting winds. The winds persisted throughout the week, including Saturday, but nothing as impactful as Thursday.“I felt like it was playing harder than on any other day. It was pretty windy throughout the day,” said Roscich, who began the final round with a one-stroke lead at 9-under. “It was a different wind. Most of the days, it’s been the same wind. Today was a little bit different and it was kind of hard adjusting to that.”Roscich shot a 1-under 69 after opening the tournament with a 5-under 65 Wednesday and recording a 4-under 66 Friday. He made the turn at even-par 35 in the final round, then paired a bogey on the par-three 10th hole with a birdie on the par-five 11th before reeling off six straight pars through 17.His approach on 18 landed within a few feet of the flag, but bounced and rolled to the edge of the green. Making par seemed like a reasonable objective, but Roscich's putt headed toward the hole and slowly dropped in, setting off a loud cheer among the fans encircling the green.“It’s a bad thought, but I was just thinking about the cars on the right and I’m like, ‘Just don’t do it over there,’ ” Roscich said, referring to the vehicles in the parking lot behind the trees adjacent to the 18th green.“ ‘The pin’s back right. Anywhere on the left, even the rough is good,’ ” he said, explaining the reasoning ahead of his second shot. “I hit a good wedge shot, just didn’t spin. I had 25 feet there.”Birdwell played in the final group with Roscich and Peter Kim, who tied for fourth at 6-under 204 with Matt Vogt and Jake Albert. The University of Illinois golfer began the final round at 8-under in sole possession of second place. Birdwell held the lead at 10-under after a birdie on No. 11.After three pars, he hit a rough spot, making bogeys on 15 and 16. Instead of a collapse, Birdwell recovered with a birdie on 17 to set a three-way tie at 9-under.“I missed that putt on 16 and told myself, ‘Now, I’ve got to make a birdie,’ ” Birdwell said. “There is no just coasting in with pars. You’ve got to make something.”Birdwell worked out of another tough spot on 18. His second shot soared over the green and into a bunker below the scoreboard located next to the bleachers. He chipped onto the green and saved par.“I’m surprised my drive got through to be honest,” Birdwell said of his approach on 18. “I didn’t think I hit it that far. The bunker was 350 and it was playing uphill 20 yards. It’s surprising.”Roscich’s long putt had already sealed the win before Birdwell’s final putt for par.“Congrats to Grant,” Birdwell said. “That was a good putt. I thought I was going to be able to get in a playoff, but he was scaring the hole all day.”Palacios had the best final round among the leaders. The University of Utah player entered Saturday’s competition at a respectable 2-under, but wasn’t near the top of the leaderboard. Then, Palacios got hot.His bogey-free round included birdies on 8, 10, 12, 15 and 17. Palacios made an eagle on the par-five No. 11.“I hit a good shot on 10 and put to 3 or 4 feet,” Palacios said. “I birdied that one and gave myself a look on 11, which I made. I put it close again on 12. I was able to convert those 5-to-6 footers, which were key to shooting this round.”Palacios nearly birdied the final hole, but his putt stopped an inch short of the cup.“That was close,” Palacios said. “That would’ve been nice.”0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare -

"He really stepped up his game in all phases and was a big reason why we won 19 games."Jr., P/SS/First Baseman, MontevideoGriffin Epema is the only non-senior to make the All-Area First Team, and quite frankly, it's well-deserved.Already a commit to the NCAA Division I University of St. Thomas, Epema possessed a 6-2 record and two saves with a startling 1.09 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched. He also batted an eye-popping .460 on 40 hits (nine doubles, five triples) with 31 runs, 24 RBIs, 23 stolen bases and 16 walks.Epema, who was named the conference's MVP, earned Class AA All-State, All-Section 3AA and All-West Central honors."Griffin is a very high IQ baseball player who has a great determination to win," Tim Epema said.Sr., Utility/P, MinnewaskaA do-it-all superstar, Connor Erickson's bat was up there as one of the most lethal.Erickson, committed to the NCAA Division III Concordia College-Moorhead, had a .478 batting average and a 1.450 on-base-plus-slugging percentage on 37 hits (16 doubles, five home runs) with a jaw-dropping 42 RBIs and 33 runs.An All-Section 3AA and All-West Central pick, Erickson played all nine positions, which included a .957 fielding percentage and a 4-2 record on the mound."Connor exemplifies every quality in a young man that everyone dreams of coaching," Lakers head coach Joe Alexander said. "On the field, he is one of the best players to play Minnewaska baseball with stats great enough to make it the second best season in school history. Off the field, Connor is a tremendous young man who is very active in his church and all of his communities. ... His presence in our dugout will definitely be missed and almost impossible to replace."Sr., Catcher, LitchfieldLitchfeld could always lean on Tripp McCann to provide them firepower.McCann, who is committed to the NJCAA Division III St. Cloud Technical and Community College, hit for .423 on 33 hits (five home runs, five doubles, one triple) with 28 RBIs, 26 runs, 18 walks and 18 stolen bases. He ends his prep career as a Class AA All-State, All-Section 5AA and All-Wright County selection."Tripp had a phenomenal year hitting, finishing top five in four single-season categories and top 10 in several others," Dragons head coach Jeff Wollin said. "His positive, unselfish, team-first attitude was always present and was a big reason for any success our team had this spring."Sr., OF, LitchfieldOne of the speediest contact hitters out there, Alex Medina had an exceptional spring.Medina batted .404 on 36 hits (10 doubles, a school-record five triples, two home runs) with 33 runs, 19 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.A commit to the NCAA Division III Concordia College-Moorhead for football and possibly baseball, he wraps up his prep career as a Class AA All-State, All-Section 5AA and All-Wright County pick."Alex had an incredible senior season — both offensively, finishing top five in four single-season categories, and defensively, running down almost everything that didn't leave the ballpark — while leading his team to a 18-8 record," Wollin said. "But, what he does off the field, as a student, classmate and role model is equally impressive. "His on base skills, defensive ability, speed and arm on the mound give him all the tools you want in a high school baseball player and that will serve him well at the next level. He exemplifies what you want in a leader, both on and off the field, and led us to a place we have not been to in a while."So., P/Infield, YMEGunnar Fagen continued to build off of his strong freshman season.Fagen had a 4-2 record with a 2.72 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched. He also batted .409 on 27 hits (nine doubles, one triple, one home run) with 28 RBIs.He was an All-Section 3AA and All-Camden selection."Gunnar is a great kid who works hard, is a great teammate and is very coachable," YME head coach Nick Richter said. "He is always tying to get better and did a lot of great things for us."Sr., 2B/P, MontevideoAs electric of a lead-off hitter as anyone in the state, the Thunder Hawks could always rely on Ben Gunlogson for a spark.Gunlogson batted .402 on 35 hits with 29 runs, 14 RBIs, 13 walks and 10 stolen bases. His three home runs this season are tied for the most in school history. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRory McIlroy insults fan after abuse shouted at him at US Open in New YorkPhoto by Tracy Wilcox/PGA TOUR via Getty ImagesIt wasn’t the US Open Rory McIlroy was hoping for at Shinnecock Hills. He was in contention going into the back nine on Saturday, but a string of bogeys on the back left him well off the pace, and a poor Sunday capped off a disappointing week. One of the big storylines entering the week was how McIlroy would be received by the New York crowd. They hit him with a barrage of abuse at the Ryder Cup last year, so would that continue at Shinnecock? In the week’s build-up to the US Open, McIlroy said the crowd had been welcoming to him. The Ryder Cup was a totally different event, and the Northern Irishman was back to being a fan favourite.Unfortunately, the pleasantries didn’t last the entire tournament.Photo by Warren Little/Getty ImagesRory McIlroy insults heckling fan at the US OpenDuring his final round at Shinnecock, one of the New York fans relentlessly heckled McIlroy during his tee shot. After McIlroy hit his driver, they repeatedly shouted, “get in the bunker”, and followed with some indiscernible heckling as McIlroy headed back to his bag.It looked as if McIlroy was going to completely ignore the fan, but as he walked off the tee box, he glared at his heckler before motioning his arms in front of his stomach to call the fan overweight. The fans laughed, and the heckler sounded totally shocked by McIlroy’s response. It was an apt clapback, as the Masters champion didn’t even need a word to win the exchange. What Rory McIlroy said about New York fans at the start of the US OpenFor the most part, it was a pleasant reunion for McIlroy and the New York fans. Speaking in the week, he explained how much he loves playing in New York.McIlroy said, “Look, I love playing around New York. I love playing in this area. It’s got some of the best golf in the world.“This is a different — like the Ryder Cup is us versus them, very partisan, very — like it’s just a different beast. So, yeah, I have no — yeah, was it a rough week for me at times? Absolutely. But it is what it is. If that’s a price to pay to live the life that I’m living, then I’m okay with that.”It’s a shame it didn’t last the entire tournament, but one bad fan doesn’t come close to resembling the abuse he received at the Ryder Cup.READ MORE: Tyrrell Hatton delivers his verdict on the way the USGA set up Shinnecock for the US Open0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJamahal Hill bluntly says viral Alex Pereira clash at UFC PI was stagedPhoto by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty ImagesJamahal Hill and Alex Pereira appeared to nearly come to blows at the UFC Performance Institute in December 2024.The viral clip showed Hill confronting Pereira before the Brazilian threw sparring gloves towards him.A year and a half later, the former light-heavyweight champion has now set the record straight about what really happened.Jamahal Hill says Alex Pereira gym confrontation was plannedPhoto by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty ImagesHill now claims the entire scene was staged to build interest in a rematch with Pereira. That changes the context of a clip many fans saw as real tension after Pereira’s first-round knockout win over Hill at UFC 300.The former light-heavyweight champion told Home of Fight that he and the Brazilian star were never genuinely enemies.“Me and him are cool, bro. There’s never been any beef, there’s never been any animosity. We’ve never had to be separated or any of those things,” he began by saying.Hill then explained why the UFC PI moment happened.“There was the video… We planned that. That was for us to try to hype up a fight between the two of us, before the Magomed [Ankalaev]. I was trying to jump the line over Magomed.”At the time, it seemed like Hill was still chasing revenge after losing his title shot against Pereira. Now, he shockingly says it was simply promotion. It also shows how quickly UFC narratives can be manufactured around real competitive stakes.Read more:Josh Hokit blasts Daniel Cormier after ex-UFC champ criticised his Michelle Obama commentsArman Tsarukyan opens up on new fate of truck Justin Gaethje refused after Ilia Topuria winJustin Gaethje not sure Ilia Topuria will be the same after first career loss0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIran coach hails 'great achievement' after second World Cup drawIran's head coach Amir Ghalenoei hailed his team's performance against Belgium (Frederic J. Brown)Coach Amir Ghalenoei hailed Iran's unbeaten start to the World Cup as a "great achievement" that will be remembered by future generations, following a 0-0 draw with Belgium on Sunday.Having arrived at the tournament under the shadow of war between Tehran and Washington, Iran have drawn both their opening games, and remain in with a chance to qualify for the knockout rounds for the first time.Ghalenoei praised his players for holding Belgium, ranked 10th in the world, to a stalemate in Los Angeles on Sunday despite facing the strain of considerable visa and travel restrictions in the United States."This is a great achievement. We've had two games without losing in the World Cup, with the conditions that we've had," he said."We had less than 16 hours to get to do training before the game," he said, after his team was not permitted to travel early to the US from their base camp in Mexico."This is a great achievement, and it will be written about in the history of our football, and future generations will talk about this."Before the game, the Iran anthem was booed by members of Los Angeles' extensive Persian exile community, who oppose the country's hardline regime. But the team itself was vocally supported by a majority of the packed stadium."I want to thank all the Iranians, with different attitudes regarding politics. They supported us, and they gave us energy," said Ghalenoei.Ghalenoei said that despite Belgium having Nathan Ngoy sent off in the 66th minute, Iran were "lucky not to lose" given the strength of the opposition."I don't think any team in the world could have really sustained with such conditions, and played like this -- the conditions have been extremely hard for us," he said."Our players are really giving everything, they are playing with their heart."In an evenly poised Group G, Iran must secure at least a point in their final game against Egypt, which will take place in Seattle next Friday."Tomorrow we need to focus on the game with Egypt. Egypt is a very strong team, they have very good players. Our first and utmost aim is to reach the next round," said the manager.Iran midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh also paid tribute to the team's "spirit" and "amazing performance."He said the team would draw upon the experience of narrowly failing to progress from their group at the last World Cup, when they crashed out after a 1-0 defeat to the United States."Last World Cup, we tried to do the best thing, but very last minute, we couldn't do it," he said."But now I think the most important thing is we go to recover well, to make sure that we are ready for the next game."amz/rcw0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare

APNEWS.COMOh, brother! Brady Tkachuk getting traded to Florida to join Matthew Tkachuk, AP source saysUnited States' Brady Tkachuk (7) and Matthew Tkachuk (19) celebrate after the United States' win over Canada in the men's ice hockey gold medal game at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, Feb. 22, 2026. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)2026-06-21T22:23:02Z Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk are about to team up in Florida, after the Panthers pulled off another summertime blockbuster. The Panthers and Ottawa were finalizing a deal where Florida would send four draft picks to the Senators for Brady Tkachuk, a person familiar with the terms said Sunday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither team had released details publicly. The picks were Florida’s first-rounder this year, No. 9 overall, along with two picks acquired earlier Sunday in the Panthers’ move to send Mackie Samoskevich to Seattle, and another first-rounder in 2029.Brady Tkachuk has spent the entirety of his eight-year NHL career in Ottawa, and now he joins his brother, Olympic teammate and podcast co-host in Florida — the place where Matthew Tkachuk has spent the last four seasons, winning two Stanley Cups and getting to the final three times. The Athletic was first to report the pending trade.Brady Tkachuk has two seasons left on the seven-year, $57.56 million contract he signed in October 2021 when he also became Ottawa’s captain. As recently as late April, he bristled at conversation about his name being in trade rumors following a first-round playoff exit. It’s a move that makes sense for so many reasons and has seemed almost inevitable.Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk reveled in the chance to play alongside one another for USA Hockey at the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025 (winning silver) and the Milan Cortina Olympics this year (winning gold, the first for the American men’s program on the Olympic stage since the miracle in Lake Placid 46 years ago). Read More Their parents — their dad is NHL legend Keith Tkachuk — have a home in Florida and are regular attendees at Panthers games, and the USA Hockey ties means Brady Tkachuk already has relationships with many in the Florida organization. Bill Zito, Florida’s hockey operations president and general manager, had a role within USA Hockey during this past Olympic cycle and Panthers equipment manager Teddy Richards had a role with the 4 Nations and Milan Cortina teams as well. Brady Tkachuk was Ottawa’s captain for the last five seasons, and he was — by far in some cases — their leader in countless categories over his eight years with the Senators. No player had more goals (213), points (463), power-play goals (62), shots (2,202), hits (1,921), winning goals (28), multigoal games (30) and penalty minutes (821) in his tenure with the club, which acquired him with the No. 4 pick in the 2018 draft. And now, four years after landing Matthew Tkachuk, the Panthers have tapped into the Tkachuk family well of talent again. It also adds another big name to the list of players that Florida has locked up for several seasons going forward, including Aleksander Barkov, Aaron Ekblad, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe, Gustav Forsling, Anton Lundell and others. They’re all Stanley Cup winners, and now Brady Tkachuk would figure to have a real chance to get his name etched onto hockey’s chalice in the coming years as well.___AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno contributed to this report.___AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl TIM REYNOLDS Reynolds is an Associated Press sports writer, based in South Florida. twitter mailto0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIran's challenges at World Cup swirl outside draw with BelgiumINGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Iran took another step toward advancing in the World Cup on Sunday, but once again the off-the-field play dominated the conversation. At the match's conclusion, at least one attendee wearing a pre-revolutionary flag shirt was detained for trying to run onto the pitch. And afterward, though demonstrations were quieter than Monday's, an Associated Press reporter observed a fan who got into a scuffle with protesters being loaded into an ambulance. But before the match had even kicked off, U.S. Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin said Sunday that the Iranians had “tried to get somebody in yesterday” who had direct ties to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. In a statement, the soccer federation vociferously pushed back.“The claim that an official representative of the Iranian Football Federation attempted to board a flight to enter the United States yesterday and was prevented from doing so is an outright and undeniable lie,” the statement said.Mullin told Fox News that most teams travel with around 120 people, but the U.S. had accepted 53 in Iran's case. He said the rest of the people Iran had tried to secure visas for had “direct ties to the IRGC and aren’t their normal traveling group.” The federation called Mullin's claims “completely unsupported by any evidence or documentation, but also represent a clear attempt to cover up discriminatory behavior and unreasonable restrictions.” That statement echoed Iran's complaints throughout the tournament that politics have infringed on soccer, even as U.S. Vice President JD Vance said there was an opportunity to “turn over a new leaf” with talks beginning in Switzerland on the interim deal to end the war. Iran’s players and coach have complained about shuttling to and from Mexico instead of Tucson, Arizona, and the barring of some officials and staff, and the federation has said it would pursue a complaint against FIFA.Iranian national team player Alireza Jahanbakhsh said after the match that he doesn’t want to keep focusing on the challenging situation, and that players are now focused on recovery and preparing to travel to Seattle for the next game, against Egypt. He said he hopes the team can head there as soon as possible to adapt.“We don’t ask for much. We just ask for the same procedure as for all the other 47 teams,” he said. “Hopefully we can bring everyone who is involved and help us with us.”At the stadium near Los Angeles, fans wearing green-and-red scarves, stickers and T-shirts were mixed on the impact of the team's shift to train across the border in Mexico. Some said the team was unfairly burdened, while others who followed the team to Tijuana were thrilled to get closer access to the players.Shamira Ghaemmaghami, 66, of nearby Orange County, said she was supporting the players from her native Iran and also from Belgium. She said she respects the right of protesters to voice their opinions but feels sports should unite people, not separate them.“Fighting over these things, sports and politics should not be mixed,” she said. “They worked so hard to get where they are, both sides, actually.”Outside the stadium, a few hundred people demonstrated against Iran's government. Aside from some verbal altercations and the scuffle after the match, the protests were smaller than at Iran's first game and featured more security from the outset. Inside, some fans carried the red-and-green flags emblazoned with a golden lion and sun that predate the 1979 Islamic Revolution — a flag that seemed at least as visible as the official flag of Iran itself. They were also joined by a sizable crowd of Belgium fans wearing red and yellow and those donning jerseys from countries including Argentina, the U.S. and Mexico.Gerald Martinez, 66, of Tucson, wore a green Iran scarf. While not Iranian, he and his son decided to support the team when they initially announced they'd be training in their hometown. “I wish they were all here. I wish they were welcome,” Martinez said, adding he felt the team was suffering a disadvantage.Stefan Arts, 42, traveled from Antwerp, Belgium, and said he's met many people who were Iranian but supporting his country’s team instead. That's how Arman Sharif, 40, of Los Angeles, feels. He was outside the stadium to protest and said he feels the players are allied with the government in Tehran. “Whoever it is, we're a fan of the opponents,” Sharif said. ___Associated Press reporters Ty ONeil, Gregory Bull and Andrew Dalton in Inglewood, California; Gabriela Aoun Angueira in San Diego and Thomas Strong in Washington contributed to this report.___AP World Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/hub/fifa-world-cup0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare

Randall, who had open-heart surgery in 2024, was not expected to be in Southampton, New York, to watch Wyndham's final round in person. But without telling his son, Randall reportedly took a red eye to New York and got to witness his son win the U.S. Open for the second time. The scene on the 18th green was especially awesome with Wyndham celebrating with family and friends only to turn around and see his dad. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMColorado native Wyndham Clark wins U.S. Open Golf title for 2nd timeFor the second time in four years, one of Colorado's own is the U.S. Open golf champion.Wyndham Clark held off early challenges and on to his big lead, ultimately winning the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York.Clark is now a two-time U.S. Open champion after winning his first career major title in the 2023 edition at Los Angeles Country Club. He finished with a four-day total score of 4-under-par 276 to take home the 2026 crown. The Denver native held a six-shot lead through 54 holes. Victory was hardly in hand, especially after some early charges from Sam Burns and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He struggled out the gate with a front-nine 38 that featured three bogeys and no birdies as his large lead dwindled to one.But Clark got up and down from a tough lie on No. 9 for par and then birdied the tough 10th via a remarkable spinning wedge shot to five feet. From there, he converted numerous scrambling pars down the stretch as the field largely fell back on a tough, firm final-round Sunday at Shinnecock Hills.Burns mounted one last charge, making a birdie to reach 3-under but missing short birdie putts on the last two holes that could have applied more pressure.Clark then made his own finishing statement, draining a long birdie putt on the par-5 16th hole following a wayward drive and nasty lie in the rough.Though he bogeyed the 17th hole, Clark rallied to par the 18th and seal the win.FIRE HIM UP 🔥 Wyndham Clark birdies hole 16 in the final round of the U.S. Open. 📺 NBC & Peacock pic.twitter.com/b90QiosAsu— NBC Sports (@NBCSports) June 21, 2026It was a wire-to-wire win for Clark, who led outright after every round. He is just the eighth player to do so in 126 U.S. Opens, joining golf legends like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Ben Hogan and Walter Hagen. The 2011 Valor Christian alumnus grew up in Highlands Ranch, playing and practicing at Cherry Hills Country Club.Clark won the 2009 and 2011 Colorado Class 4A individual state golf titles, including an eight-shot victory in 2011 with rounds of 64 and 64 at Pelican Lakes Golf Course in Pelican Lakes. After winning the U.S. Open and Wells Fargo Championship in 2023, Clark reached a career-high of No. 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings in April 2024 and played on Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup squads for the U.S.However, he struggled throughout much of 2025 and brought on Cherry Hills Director of Instruction Pat Coyner as his swing coach in September.Clark has surged since. This was his eighth top-20 finish in 2026, highlighted by a comeback win at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May with a final-round 60.Still, he has become a polarizing figure in the sport. Most notably, Clark reportedly damaged multiple lockers at historic Oakmont Country Club in a post-round outburst during the 2025 U.S. Open. He also was involved in a rules controversy at the 2024 Bay Hill tournament and prominently threw a club in anger at the 2025 PGA Championship. That meant Clark was far from a fan favorite on Long Island. Fans could regularly be heard rooting against Clark on the NBC broadcast.Still, Clark is a U.S. Open champion again, the sixth time a Colorado product has won golf's national championship.Hale Irwin (Boulder High School, University of Colorado alumnus) won the U.S. Open in 1974, 1979 and 1990. Woad missed her birdie try and Yamashita rolled in a short putt for the win.The 2025 Women’s Open champion and LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Yamashita now has her third LPGA title and will move up to third in the Race for the CME Globe season-long points race.Yamashita, 24, began the day five strokes behind 54-hole leader Jing Yan.“It had like a score gap with the top” to begin the day, Yamashita said through a translator on the TV broadcast. “But this week I had really good feeling, so I’m really happy to win.”Woad nearly stole a memorable win when she holed out for birdie from the sand at the par-4 17th hole. That put her at 18 under and meant she needed to par No. 18 to win outright. But a 4-foot putt to clinch the title lipped out, and she took bogey and headed to the playoff.“Obviously 17 was pretty – a bonus,” Woad said. “Didn’t have the easiest bunker shot and obviously made it. Thought it was going a little bit past, so was happy with that.“Felt like I hit an OK putt (at No. 18). Obviously lipped out on the high side. Yeah, Miyu played great in the playoff hole.”Yamashita birdied five of her first seven holes to close the gap. She added birdies at Nos. 10, 11 and 13 before hitting her only speed bump with a bogey at the par-3 15th. Yamashita hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation during the round.Meanwhile, Yan – a 30-year-old vet seeking her first career win – was the second- and third-round leader but couldn’t keep up. His father works as a real estate agent now, but he had a brief career as a professional tennis player.Wyndham Clark said his father was the driving force behind his interest in golf. The two golfed together frequently and Randall helped his son improve his game during his youth."My mom first took me to play golf, but my dad was the one who really got me into golf," Clark explained at the U.S. Open. "He picked it up just a few years prior to me starting at the age of 3. Every time I’d go golf at a young age was with my dad."There’s so many memories of us leaving at 6 a.m., our family on like a family vacation, and we’d play golf and come back before noon and that was the only way my mom would let us do that. There’s a ton of memories. And then he took me to tournaments.Additionally, Clark credited his father with instilling in him the qualities needed to achieve success."He instilled in me hard work and discipline and I feel like I get a lot of my fieriness from him," Clark said. "My dad is a big reason why I’m out here.""Hopefully, (Sunday) can be a great Father’s Day for him," he added.Who is Wyndham Clark's mother?Lise Clark was Wyndham Clark's mother. She won Miss New Mexico in 1981 and worked as a national sales director for beauty company Mary Kay.She died on Aug. 2, 2013, at age 55 after a battle with breast cancer. Her death hit Wyndham — then 19 years old and playing college golf at Oklahoma State — hard. He considered quitting the sport, as he recounted to reporters at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this year.“I was playing terribly,” Clark said, per CNN. “There’s many times when I stormed off the golf course in qualifying or in tournaments and just drove as fast as I could, I didn’t know where I was going.“The pressure of golf and then not having my mom there and someone that I could call was really tough for me. Then professionally, I’ve had multiple moments like that where you just, you miss multiple cuts in a row or you feel like your game is good and you’re not getting much out of it and you just contemplate [walking away].“Max Homa has a great quote: ‘Every golfer’s one shot away from thinking they can win the Masters or one shot away from quitting golf.’ It really is a great quote because that’s the truth. I’m glad I stuck it out and am here now.”Clark stuck it out and hung on one of the messages his mother delivered to him before each of his tournaments.Play big.“When she was sick and I was in college, she told me, ‘Hey, play big,’” Clark said at the U.S. Open, per CNN."'Play for something bigger than yourself. You have a platform to either witness or help or be a role model for so many people.'"I've taken that to heart. When I’m out there playing, I want to do that for her. I want to show everyone the person I am and how much joy I have out there playing and hope I can inspire people to want to be like me and be better than me."Suffice to say that Lise was one of Clark's biggest supporters. Thus, it's no surprise that he has thought about her often during the U.S. Open."I wish she could be here, but I know she’s proud of me, and she’s made a huge impact on my life – I am who I am today because of her," Clark said. "She was kind of my rock and my always-there supporter. So when things were tough or when things were going great, she was always there to keep me grounded and either bring me up or keep the high going."I'm getting a little choked up. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBelgium frustrated by structured Iran, as Group G remains tight in 0-0 drawRomelu Lukaku #9 of Belgium and Saeid Ezatolahi #6 of Iran head the ball during a 2026 FIFA World Cup match, Sunday June 21, 2026 in Inglewood, Calif.INGLEWOOD, Calif. – G stands for “grind” as Group G saw its third draw in three games at this World Cup on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.Despite its dominance on the ball, Belgium was unable to find much danger in the final third, and after a free-kick goal was deemed offside on video review in the first half, Iran put up a gritty and structured defensive performance in a 0-0 draw.“We had the opportunity to win, but I think this is a great achievement,” Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said. “Future generations will talk about this. What a great achievement.”The favored Belgians have now scored just one goal–an Egyptian own goal in last week’s opener–in two group stage games, while Iran happily took its second point of the tournament. Now, either New Zealand and Egypt have a chance to take control of the group tonight in Vancouver.“When you’re not efficient, you can’t score,” Belgium coach Rudi Garcia said, “and if you don’t score, you can’t win a match.”If either New Zealand or Egypt win tonight, Belgium–the 10th-ranked team in the world–will be on the third-place bubble entering the final round of group play.Iran has an edge on total goals scored (two) and currently sits in second place, which puts Iran in line to advance out of the World Cup group stage for the first time in its history.“The group is not weak. When there are so few matches, you can’t miss an opportunity, and we did,” Garcia said. “We have to keep our head down.”With a multitude of scenarios for group placings and knockout round destinations still in the air, there will be simultaneous Pacific Northwest kickoffs to finish off the group stage on Friday.Belgium (0-1-0, 2 points) will play New Zealand (0-1-0, 1 point) in Vancouver, and Iran (0-2-0, 2 point) will face Egypt (0-1-0, 1 point) in Seattle with a multitude of scenarios for group placings and knockout round destinations. The Group G winner will face a third-place team from one of Groups A/E/H/I/J with the possibility of playing the United States in the Round of 16, should the USMNT win its Round of 32 match. The second-place team from Group G will play the second-place team from Group D–either Australia or Paraguay, depending on their result Thursday in Santa Clara–with the winner likely facing Argentina in the Round of 16.The top eight third-place teams of the 12 groups move on, and with both Belgium and Iran sitting on two points, the likelihood of advancing takes a hit. There are myriad permutations still to play out for the third-place scenarios, and a goal differential of zero helps. However you look at it, the only way for any of Group G to secure a spot forward is to win next week.“We need to beat New Zealand to move to the round of 32,” Garcia said. “I’m trusting in our players that they will be confident and win.”Nearly every single statistic favored Belgium except for the scoreline on Sunday in what continues to be a frustrating World Cup for the Red Devils.Belgium was without Manchester City striker Jeremy Doku, who was held out due to illness, but the Belgians were still dominant on the ball with around 70% possession for most of the match.Belgian defender Nathan Ngoy took a straight red card in the 66th minute–Ngoy mishandled the ball and pulled down the Iranian forward as the last defender–and despite playing down a man for 24 minutes, the Belgians still held a 23-7 advantage in shot attempts, 7-3 mark in shots on target and 19-4 lead in attempts inside the box.“In the first half, we got ahead of ourselves. We were wasteful,” Garcia said. “We lacked efficiency. We talked about verticality. We didn’t have much room. We could have done much better spacing ourselves out on the crosses.”“We expected to dominate, and we did. We played as we wanted to play.”Ultimately, Belgium still couldn’t break through thanks in part due to the stellar goalkeeping from Iran’s Alireza Beiranvand, who put up seven saves in a Man of the Match performance.“One of our greatest goalkeepers in the history of Iranian football,” Ghalenoei said. “He’s extremely intelligent, very experienced. He had one of his best days today. He had the right concentration and given us one very valuable point.”Iran played with an excellent defensive structure and looked to push back on the counterattack. The one area Belgium did not earn the edge in was forced turnovers, where Iran held a 31-23 advantage.Team Melli was also the only side to find the back of the net on Sunday, as Medhi Taremi scored off a crafty free kick in the 25th minute. However, it was just a step too crafty, as the video assistant referee determined Taremi was offside on the free kick.“We were very unlucky it was slightly offside,” Ghalenoei said. “We could have got three points. They could have got three points. We both had equal opportunities."Now, both Belgium and Iran have equal opportunity to put themselves through to the knockout rounds for next week. For Iran, it’s a chance they relish, and for Belgium, it shouldn’t have come down to this.“We need to focus on the next match and stay calm,” Garcia said.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 5 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAfter missing his putt on the 18th hole, Sam Burns comes up one shot short at the US OpenSOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Sam Burns tossed his putter aside, fell to his palms and then down to his knees. The crowd around him groaned. He was that close to sinking a birdie putt on the 18th hole to tie leader Wyndham Clark at the U.S. Open and instead missed just right by a half-inch — maybe."I really thought I made that putt," Burns said after shooting a 67 Sunday to get to 3 under for the tournament and go into the clubhouse one stroke behind Clark. “It just didn't go in.”Burns sat down in the scoring tent, let out an exasperated sigh and put his hands on his head. He could only watch as Clark birdied No. 16, bogeyed 17 and two-putted in on 18 to win by the single shot Burns did not make down the stretch."I felt like I was chasing all day," Burns said. “It's unfortunate I just came up one short.”The heartbreak at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island came a year after Burns' miserable finish at the U.S. Open at Oakmont outside Pittsburgh. He led after two rounds, played in the final group Sunday and everything fell apart in the rain when he shot 78 to fall out of contention and into a tie for seventh.Burns was brilliant Sunday in his bid for retribution. Entering the final round at even par, seven back of Clark, Burns birdied three of his first eight holes to move past Scottie Scheffler and others into second place. “To start the day seven shots back, I knew it was going to take something really special,” Burns said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start.”Clark bogeying three of his first seven holes made it close, but Burns was never able to pull into a tie for first. Three-putting at No. 15 put him in a difficult spot, and he thought the back nine was playing difficult. With Clark shooting the same back-nine 35, Burns felt differently following this loss than a year ago, saying, “The guy who played the best won.”It just wasn't him.“Last year at Oakmont, I felt like more I lost the golf tournament,” Burns said. "I certainly don’t feel that way today. I gave it my best, and I did everything I could to have a chance to win.”When Burns was hitting balls on the driving range Sunday night, his dad, Tom came over with a fatherly message on Father's Day.“He just said he was really proud,” Sam Burns said as he got choked up. “I think we both knew how special it could have been for Father’s Day. But I know he’s proud.”Burns' wife, Caroline, is 37 weeks pregnant with the couple's second child, he said. Burns played with 2-year-old son Bear while waiting for Clark to finish and left the course with life perspective after another difficult defeat.“It’s a crazy life we live sometimes,” Burns said. “As a competitor, you want to go out there and compete as hard as you can and try to win. But at the end of the day, when you’re off the golf course, it’s really not that important and family is a lot more important than golf.”___AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy Senators traded Brady Tkachuk after on-and-off rumorsWhy Senators traded Brady Tkachuk after on-and-off rumors originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. It's easy to focus on the Florida Panthers in the moments after this headline-grabbing blockbuster trade. But with Brady Tkachuk now heading to the Sunshine State, it's worth thinking about the Ottawa Senators. A proud franchise has dealt away its biggest name. That's a huge deal in its own right. It's a massive moment that has arrived before the draft and before free agency. It could have long-lasting implications. The Senators got four big-time draft picks in return for Tkachuk, which is an obvious reason to do the deal. There's much more to it than that, though.MORE: It's time to ask a serious Matthew Knies questionWhy did the Senators trade away Brady Tkachuk? The reality is that this had been trending for a while, and that it seemed like Tkachuk was due for a change of scenery. He hadn't said anything too definitively, but it was clear from comments and from reports that Tkachuk wasn't happy anymore in Ottawa. The Senators had a disappointing 2025-26 season, which didn't help, and they had to decide what their future looked like.As a team without a ton of depth of talent, they likely didn't feel they could build a Stanley Cup-winning roster around Tkachuk, so they've moved on. Ottawa has decided to shift its timeline further into the future. Maybe 2026-27 isn't their season. The hope would be that a few years down the road, they can be contenders again. They took advantage of the obvious interest that Florida would have in adding the other Tkachuk brother to Matthew that they already have. The Panthers are also coming off a disappointing season that put pressure on them to make a big move. The Senators knew if they waited, Tkachuk's value could decline. So they made the deal while he was still at just about maximum level of return.More NHL news:Jack Eichel turned into Ben SimmonsFrederik Andersen heading toward an unceremonious exitCale Makar is about to become a lot more expensiveSabres have reached the Alex Tuch pivot pointSidney Crosby trade plans did a 180 for the Penguins0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMClark wins 2nd US Open title. Yamashita takes LPGA event in playoffSOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — On the edge of the greatest collapse in U.S. Open history, Wyndham Clark held his nerve against a charge by Sam Burns and a Shinnecock Hills gallery that never gave him much love Sunday until he captured his second Open title in four years.Six shots ahead at the start of the final round, Clark’s final act was two putts from just outside 50 feet for par that gave him a 3-over 73 and a one-shot victory over Burns.Clark, who won the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, became the first wire-to-wire winner of the U.S. Open since Martin Kaymer at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014.This sure didn’t feel like that. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMU.S. Open 2026: Keith Mitchell's wild week ends with an extraordinary tournament recordKeith Mitchell didn’t win the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, but he’s walking away with one of the more memorable even-par weeks in history. The man affectionately known as “Casmere Keith” for his smooth fashion sense, Mitchell shot a 41 in his first nine holes of the tournament, but came back with the seventh 29 in U.S. Open history shoot a remarkable even-par 70. That turned out to be Mitchell’s number for the week, as he went on to score three more 70s to become the first player ever in U.S. Open to record even par in each of the four rounds. That is an incredible achievement, both because of the brutish nature of Shinnecock and the fact that thousands of rounds have been posted in the 126 years of the national championship.Going into the week, Mitchell, 34, had never finished better than 20th in a major, and he’d only made the cut in half of his starts (7 of 14) in the big four. He had to reach only his third U.S. Open this year through 36-hole Final Qualifying. On Sunday, he ended up being in contention going into the back nine but made bogeys at 10 and 17 to shoot his fourth 70 and ultimately finish T-4 at 280, four strokes back of winner Wyndham Clark. The finish automatically qualifies Mitchell for next year’s U.S. Open at Pebble. Beach.“I might have not won, but I felt like I achieved a lot more than potentially I thought I was going to after about two hours into the [first]] round,” Mitchell said on Sunday. “… I think I won the week after that start.”For the tournament, Mitchell’s rounds got more consistent with each day. In round 1, he had four birdies and bogeys each to go with one eagle and one double bogey. In round 2, it was four birdies and four bogeys; round 3, three and three; and round 4, two and two.As much as Clark was lauded for his putting, Mitchell led the field for the week on the greens, gaining 1.77 strokes. On Saturday, he said, “This week I'm making some putts for par. I've tended to play better on harder golf courses for some reason … you have to be very disciplined, and I feel like I've done that this week, and my putter has been performing better than usual.”With his only tour win coming in the 2019 Honda Classic, Mitchell has consistently made cuts in 16 starts this year and posted two top-six finishes. His world ranking at No. 100 figures to rise nicely after this week.“I would say the confidence in my physical ability had always been there, but the last three days the confidence in my ability to perform has gone up a little bit,” Mitchell said. “My best finish in a major by far, might be the best finish of the year, actually, and it's at this kind of place.“I've never necessarily believed that I was … I don't know, if it's good enough, but was able to accomplish something this big, and for me right now, a T-4 is a win in my book.”There will be one more memory of Mitchell this week. It was the video of him finishing his round on Thursday, a bewildered look on his face and his hair flying in the wind.“It's the most accurate meme of all time,” he said. “I felt exactly how I looked.”0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWe know how close Wild were to trading for Brady TkachukWe know how close Wild were to trading for Brady Tkachuk originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. It's well known that the Minnesota Wild are trying to make a big splash this offseason.Apparently, they were in on Brady Tkachuk. But in the end, it was the Florida Panthers who pulled off a blockbuster trade for the Ottawa Senators star instead. The Wild were in on it, though -- that much seems pretty sure. The Athletic's Michael Russo reported as much on X shortly after the deal was reported:"Can confirm (Wild) were on Brady Tkachuk’s list submitted to Ottawa a few weeks ago. Wild made a huge offer, so I think at end of day Brady made decision to go to Florida."That's a fascinating angle here. Tkachuk had control with a no-trade clause, so if he didn't want to go somewhere, he didn't have to. Minnesota wouldn't have necessarily been a bad destination from a competitiveness standpoint. The Wild are a very talented team, and they just reached the second round of the postseason.MORE: It's time to ask a serious Matthew Knies questionThe Wild were always going to have a disadvantage, though -- they don't have Tkachuk's brother on their team. When the Panthers became an option, it was likely easy for Tkachuk to point the Senators in that direction. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhy does everyone hate Wyndham Clark? Inside US Open backlashEditor's note: Follow for the biggest updates and highlights from the final round at the 2026 U.S. Open. For four days during the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, Wyndham Clark heard it.Fans cheered his misses and heckled him. Some were removed from the grounds. On the fourth hole Sunday, a young fan yelled at him not to choke and was walked out by security. Clark played one of the biggest rounds of his life as the player a New York gallery openly rooted against. The hostility was loud and the cheers for the players challenging him were louder.Winning his second U.S. Open probably made the harsh comments a little easier. There were cheers when he hung on to win. But it was clear that he is not well liked by golf fans at least."New York didn't really like me," Clark said at the trophy ceremony. "I love you guys."But I get it. Some of it's self deserved. I did some unfortunate things last year that I really regret, and I've said sorry multiple times, and I'm still sorry. So, hopefully, I can win you guys over eventually."Clark said he understood why people would root for Scottie Scheffler. The reasons behind his treatment were not a mystery.Wyndham Clark locker at OakmontThe clearest incident happened a year ago at this same championship. At the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont in Plum, Pennsylvania, Clark missed the cut by a single stroke then took his anger out on the locker room. The club banned him. To be reinstated, he had to pay for the damage, make a charitable contribution and complete anger management. He apologized in public, and he has kept apologizing since. Not Wyndham Clark's first tantrumOne month before Oakmont, at the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, Clark threw his driver after a poor tee shot on the 16th hole. The club struck a sponsor sign and knocked it down just a few feet from a flag attendant. He apologized for that one, too. Fans did not see a one-time slip. They saw a temper.Wyndham Clark lightning rod on PGA TourClark has become one of the harder players in the game to root for. Golf Digest wrote during the week that arguably no PGA Tour player in good standing draws as much bad feeling. Clark doesn't seem to mind. Last week, at the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto, he wore a Team USA hockey sweater during a round, rubbing in the fact that they beat Canada in their own game. Hecklers yelled "Canada hates you," at him.Sunday's US Open pile-onThe crowd wanted Scottie Scheffler, who was chasing a career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday. Fans sang Scheffler "Happy Birthday" on the first tee. Clark got a few shouts of his own name, but not much else that could be deemed positive or supportive. It wasn't just the "don't choke," comment that made it obvious Clark was the villain. When his approach shot rolled off the green on the 12th hole, the crowd cheered gleefully. One guy even shouted out "Scottie!"This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Why does everyone hate Wyndham Clark, even as he was winning US Open0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: After Trading Brady Tkachuk, Senators Eyeing Dallas Stars’ RFA Jason RobertsonIMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectIt was a seismic blockbuster that took the hockey world by storm late Sunday afternoon. The Ottawa Senators sent captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers to join his brother Matthew in a deal that has many around the sport shaking their heads. The Sens got only draft capital in return. Two first-rounders this year, another one in 2029, and a second rounder in 2030. Ottawa now has three first-round picks this year, four first-rounders in the next three years, and all of their own picks in all other rounds over the next few NHL Drafts. Could they be cooking up another massive deal using many of those draft assets?Insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period tells us that the Senators have Dallas Stars superstar forward, and restricted free agent, Jason Robertson on their radar. Things are very fluid, and there’s plenty of time for Dallas to explore its options, but sources say Ottawa is making a big push for Jason Robertson. If a trade cannot be ironed out and he hits July 1 as an RFA, the Senators could present him with a significant offer sheet. https://t.co/8HMfW5H5QD— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) June 21, 2026“Things are very fluid, and there’s plenty of time for Dallas to explore its options,” writes Pagnotta, “but sources say Ottawa is making a big push for Jason Robertson. If a trade cannot be ironed out and he hits July 1 as an RFA, the Senators could present him with a significant offer sheet.”To be clear, any offer sheet for Robertson would have to start with a 12. As in, a $12 million AAV or better. That’s what the Robertson camp is looking for, and that’s why the negotiations with Dallas have dragged out. The Stars have only $10.4M in cap space at this time, and they also have other free agents to try to re-sign. An offer sheet to Jason Robertson would cost four first-round picks in compensationThe NHL’s new offer sheet compensation tiers require any team handing out an offer worth north of $11.939M annually to surrender FOUR first-round picks in return to the player’s former team. As noted above, Ottawa does have four firsts over the next three years, including all three of their own. Is that what the Senators have in mind here? Perhaps they’d try the trade route first with Dallas. One proposed deal would look like this: Dallas currently has $10.4m in cap space to sign Bourque, Bunting, Benn, and most notably, Jason Robertson.Ottawa has $25m in cap space with no major unsigned player.Does 9th overall, 25th overall, Zetterlund, Hensler get it done? pic.twitter.com/7lGZ3yvzAW— Big Head Hockey (@bigheadhcky) June 21, 2026This hypothetical offer would have two of the Sens’ three first-rounders this year (#9 and #25, both acquired for Tkachuk) going to Dallas, in addition to highly touted American defenseman Logan Hensler, a 2025 first-rounder, and 26-year-old forward Fabian Zetterlund. If the Senators are somehow able to pivot from Tkachuk to Robertson, some would argue that they come out ahead in the end. Is Robertson a better player than Tkachuk? It’s a valid debate. The Dallas forward has three 40-goal seasons in the past five years, and an iron-man mark of reliability. He’s played in every single one of the 82-game schedules over the last four seasons. There’s still a lot that has to happen here first, however. The Stars have to concede that they cannot find a way to clear the cap space to get Robertson signed. Or that they just cannot come to terms with paying him north of $12M AAV. Robertson finished this past season with 45 goals and 96 points. Tkachuk missed 22 games in the regular season, and finished with 22 goals and 59 points in 60 games, while handing out 162 hits. It’s been a wild week of off-ice activity around the NHL since the Stanley Cup was handed out. And clearly, there’s much more to come in the days ahead. SPORTS.YAHOO.COM2026 World Cup: Cape Verde holds Uruguay to 2-2 draw to continue dream runCape Verde, one of the smallest nations at the tournament, is stunning the competition one game at a time. After forcing a 0-0 draw against Spain last week, the Blue Sharks did it again on Sunday, notching a second-half equalizer for a 2-2 draw against Uruguay.Even though Uruguay controlled most of the first half, it was Cape Verde that struck first. In the 21st minute, Kevin Pina smashed a free kick past the Uruguayan wall, past the fingertips of keeper Fernando Muslera and into the back of the net.The stunner was the first World Cup goal in the country’s history.Uruguay, though, didn’t take long to bounce back. The team scored its next two goals in a seven-minute span. The first came off a rebound header from Maximillian Araújo, who assisted Agustín Canobbio for the second late in first-half stoppage time.Uruguay held all of the momentum heading into the second half. But a Cape Verde substitute changed the tide: Three minutes after subbing into the game, Hélio Varela took advantage of a costly defensive mistake from Mathías Olivera, intercepting a poor pass back to beat Fernando Muslera one-on-one and bury the ball into the empty goal.Cape Verde players were immediately emotional after both goals, but they had to keep going. With the game holding at a 2-2 draw, Uruguay continued to put on pressure on the attack, taking 17 total shots and getting three times as many touches in the box as their opponent. But the Blue Sharks did not yield on defense, and held the 2-2 score line for the remainder of the game. This story will be updated.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup 2026: Third-place standings, tiebreakers explainedJune 17, 2026; Houston, Texas, U.S.; Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo during warm-up before the match. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images | Troy Taormina-Imagn Images The 2026 FIFA World Cup will look a little different than previous installments.Starting with the size of the field. For this year’s World Cup, the field expanded to 48 nations, up from the previous number of 32. This means the field is divided into 12 four-team groups, and it also means that the knockout stage begins with the round of 32, and not the round of 16, as in previous World Cups. That also means that teams that finish in third place in a group could still advance. To complete the round of 32, in addition to the top two teams from each group, the eight best third-place teams will move on as well. Here, we will be tracking the standings among the third-place teams. World Cup third-place standingsHere are the latest third-place standings. Remember, the top eight advance to the round of 32. Note: These are the third-place standings following Uruguay-Cabo Verde on June 21:TeamGroupWDLGFGAGDTCSPointsFIFASwedenF110660-338ScotlandC101110-4342ParaguayD10124-2-11322Cabo VerdeH021220-3267New ZealandG0102200185PortugalK010110-315CzechiaA01123-1-1140EcuadorE01101-1-2123Bosnia and HerzegovinaB01125-3-9164PanamaL00101-1-2034SenegalI00113-20015JordanJ00113-20063How do World Cup third-place tiebreakers work? Here is how FIFA will stack the third-place teams for potential tiebreakers:First, the greatest number of points in all group matchesSecond, the goal difference from all group matchesThird, the number of goals scored in all group matchesFourth, a team’s conduct score. If there are still ties after those four steps are applied, the teams still equal on points will be ranked according to the most recent FIFA World Rankings. For more on the team conduct score, including the current overall standings, we have you covered here.Update (Sunday June 21): With results from Saturday, Sweden is now the team atop the third-place standings, followed by Scotland and Paraguay.Previously: We have a new team atop the third-place standings. With both Brazil and Morocco winning on Friday, those two teams have moved up into first and second places, respectively, in Group C. That drops Scotland down into third place in Group C, and sees Scotland move to the top of the third-place standings, as they have three points from a previous win over Haiti. Results from Thursday have changed the table a bit. Now Brazil, Belgium, and Portugal are the three teams tied that played in 1-1 draws. As we saw earlier, Portugal drops out due to the three yellow cards — the team conduct score — and Brazil and Belgium are ranked according to their spot in the FIFA rankings. Bosnia and Herzegovina slide into the rankings thanks to the two goals over three matches, dropping Qatar down to fourth place in Group B (and out of these standings).Applying those tiebreakers to some of the standings you see above, the Netherlands currently sit atop these standings thanks to that third tiebreaker, and the two goals they scored against Japan. Then we can look at the four teams that played in 1-1 draws: Brazil, Belgium, Qatar, and Portugal. The next tiebreaker, following points, goal difference, and goals scored, is the team conduct score. Those first three teams each have two yellow cards, while Portugal secured three yellow cards in their 1-1 draw with DR Congo. So Portugal drops out, and the other three remain tied, and are therefore sorted by FIFA Rankings for the moment. The next tie we can look at is between Czechia, Ecuador, and Panama, teams that lost and have a goal differential of -1. Czechia scored two goals, so they slot into seventh place, leaving Ecuador and Panama fighting for the eighth and final spot (for the moment).Again, it comes down to the team conduct score between Ecuador and Panama. Ecuador currently has one yellow, while Panama has two. Ecuador slots in as the eighth team, while Panama drops out.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMOrioles clobber Dodgers, 12-1, to win series behind loud bats, steady startLOS ANGELES — The first two games of the series between the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers featured fireworks in the ninth inning— and raised heart rates for fans back in Baltimore. The Orioles lost the first in walk-off fashion after Ryan Helsley’s blown save but won the second after nearly squandering another lead because of poor defense.Sunday’s contest featured none of the above. The offense put runs up early, smacked 15 hits and blasted four homers; Brandon Young delivered yet another solid start; and the beleaguered bullpen buckled down for an easy-peasy 12-1 win over the two-time defending World Series champions. The Orioles scored at least one run in each of the first five innings, bouncing starter Emmet Sheehan early to get to the Dodgers’ bullpen. Colton Cowser led the way with three RBI hits, including a solo homer to continue his turnaround. Pete Alonso and Blaze Alexander put the nail in the coffin with homers in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.Sunday marked the first time the Orioles have scored in double digits since June 5. Baltimore had lost five of its past seven games entering Sunday, mostly a result of lackluster offense, scoring only 2.7 runs per game. But the bats came alive Sunday to deliver one of the most complete wins of the season.Young didn’t need nearly as much run support as he received. The steady right-hander continued with his impressive sophomore season, navigating through five innings of one-run ball against a powerful lineup that includes future Hall of Famers Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts. Young scattered five hits and two walks while striking out five. The right-hander has allowed three or fewer runs in 11-of-12 starts this season. The Orioles are 10-2 in games started by Young. Since the start of May, Young has been the club’s best starter, posting a 2.73 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.The back-to-back wins over the Dodgers after the nightmare that was Friday’s loss could put the Orioles (37-42) back on track as they look to get back to .500.When players arrived at Dodger Stadium on Sunday morning, they were greeted by a cloud of smoke caused by a nearby warehouse fire. The smoke cleared by first pitch, though, and the game started on time. The Orioles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.Taylor Ward led off the game with a single, advanced to third on Gunnar Henderson’s double and scored on a Samuel Basallo single. Cowser then drove in Henderson on a bloop single down the left-field line. After Max Muncy’s RBI single off Young in the bottom half of the first, Ward put his recent slump behind him with a solo homer to right-center field. Cowser then one-upped his outfieldmate by blasting a 406-foot big fly to straightaway center field. An inning later, the center fielder put Baltimore up 6-1 with a two-run, left-on-left single — his second hit off a southpaw this weekend after he entered the series 1 for 14 against them. The Orioles put up four more runs in the seventh inning on a Jeremiah Jackson RBI double and Alonso’s three-run, opposite-field homer, his 18th of the year. Alexander then put an exclamation point on the win with a two-run homer off former Orioles prospect Chayce McDermott in the eighth. The utilityman is hitting an eye-popping .446 with a 1.194 OPS since May 25.After Young finished the fifth inning, manager Craig Albernaz needed only two relievers to get through the final four frames. Left-handers Grant Wolfram and Keegan Akin combined to toss four scoreless innings without allowing a hit.The Orioles now have an opportunity to end the West Coast road trip on a high note as they head to Anaheim for a three-game series against the American League-worst Angels.____0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare -
SPORTS.YAHOO.COMU.S. Open 2026: Wyndham Clark hears the same two words before he hits a big shot. Here’s what they meanWyndham Clark was standing in the right rough of the 18th hole on Sunday, needing a par to win the U.S. Open, when microphones captured his caddie David Pelekoudas offer his final instructions. They were the same two words Pelekoudas said on the tee minutes earlier, and the same words he said to Clark dozens of times across four stressful rounds at Shinnecock Hills.“Good process,” Pelekoudas said, a somewhat vague phrase that Clark acknowledged played an important role in capturing his second U.S. Open title in four years.“My process is picking the correct club, trusting that club, being assertive, having my intermediate target, and then, you know, pull the trigger and have it be very kinda simple and lack of clutter in my brain,” Clark explained after his one-shot win over Sam Burns. “So every time he reminded me that I get back into the shot rather than maybe the moment or that I just made a bogey or someone else makes birdie. So it gets me back into, ‘Hey, this is what I do to hit a good shot, and I would do it.’”RELATED: The hidden meaning behind golf's biggest clicheThe significance of “good process” ties to Clark’s work with mental coach Julie Elion, who has been with the golfer since before his first U.S. Open win in 2023, and who has helped the golfer channel his focus as distractions have mounted. On Sunday, despite holding a six-shot lead at the start of the round, a healthy percentage of the gallery was instead supporting playing partner Scottie Scheffler, sometimes openly rooting against Clark. It would have been easy for the negative energy surrounding Clark to take over. But Elion and Clark had a similar experience to draw on from his first U.S. Open win at Los Angeles C.C. Although not as outwardly hostile as at Shinnecock, the crowd for Clark’s first major was also pulling for another player—in this case, playing partner Rickie Fowler. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler got part of what he needed — a crack in Wyndham Clark’s game that might have kickstarted his own run at completing the career Grand Slam. But Scheffler never nailed down the other part — namely, applying any pressure of his own on the player who left the door open Sunday at the U.S. Open before sneaking away with the win. While Clark hung on to beat Sam Burns by one shot and capture his second title in four years in the toughest test in golf, Scheffler will wait another year for a chance to fill that last hole on his Grand Slam resume.“I felt close again,” Scheffler said. “It’s just little things here and there.”With Clark struggling most of the day, the world’s No. 1 player celebrated his 30th birthday by making a grand total of two birdies over a round of 1-over 71 at Shinnecock Hills. He actually beat Clark by two shots in their final-pairing showdown. But he came in trailing by six.In a more telling sign of the opportunity he could not cash in on, Scheffler started as the best bet to reel in Clark among those jammed in a four-way tie for second heading into the round. He left in a three-way deadlock for fourth, passed up by Burns (67) and left behind by fellow birthday boy Tom Kim, who shot 70 and finished alone in third.Scheffler’s struggles were all part of a strange day and a strange vibe around Shinnecock. It was filled with lots of cheers for everything he did well, but also cheers for Clark’s mishaps — the product of a New York crowd familiar with Clark’s history of smashing a locker at Oakmont last year out of frustration.“You like seeing the fans cheer for you,” Scheffler said. “I think sometimes it can get a little too much when balls are kind of going off greens and you start hearing cheers. That felt a bit much to me.”It never really led to momentum, though, for the Texan, who won the British Open last year and put himself in position to become the seventh player to complete the career Grand Slam. He’ll have to wait until next year at Pebble Beach. On Sunday at Shinnecock, he spent most of the day stuck in neutral. His chances to mount a comeback got delayed on the par-3 seventh, where he needed two shots from a bunker and a 15-foot putt just to save bogey. That kept him within four of Clark. But he never drew closer than three.Scheffler’s last, best chance might have been on the par-5 16th, when Clark teed off into the thick fescue and Scheffler was in perfect shape in the fairway. But Scheffler hit driver off the deck into the rough and Clark hit a fantastic shot back into the fairway. When Clark made birdie there to Scheffler’s par, the lead was five and it was a two-man contest between Clark and Burns, who was playing three groups ahead.“He showed what he’s made of there with a great birdie on 16,” Scheffler said. “Wyndham has a pretty good -- I don’t know if ‘escapability is the right word — but he’s, I would say, a very underrated scrambler.”With the tip of his cap, Scheffler also gave a nod to reality: He lost this tournament over the first two and half days — or maybe even over the first nine holes, where he made the turn at 3 over after a three-putt from 30 feet for double-bogey on No. 8.Two months ago, Scheffler overcame a similarly slow start at the Masters and made a Sunday charge to finish one shot shy of Rory McIlroy in what would have been an unprecedented comeback from 12 strokes down heading into the weekend. This time, Scheffler was eight back of Clark after the first day.“I’ve been pretty good in first rounds over the last few years, and for some reason, the sharpness just hasn’t been there early in tournaments,” Scheffler said. “I haven’t had those leads that I’ve needed in order to win tournaments. I’ve been playing catch-up all year.”And so, Scheffler heads into the defense of his British title still with four majors to his name, but no U.S. Open. One thing those wins have in common: He has had at least a share of the lead heading into the final round of all of them.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEmmet Sheehan struggles again as Orioles rout DodgersLos Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan (80) is relieved from the mound by manager Dave Roberts (30) during the fourth inning at Dodger Stadium. LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers spent much of the first three months of the season avoiding prolonged slumps, finding ways to win even when certain parts of their game weren’t clicking. On Father’s Day at Uniqlo Field at Dodger Stadium, none of that resilience showed up.Instead, the Dodgers were thoroughly outplayed in every phase as the Baltimore Orioles rolled to a 12-1 victory Sunday afternoon, handing the Dodgers its first consecutive losses since May 12 and sending the club into a lengthy road trip searching for answers. At the center of the Dodgers’ latest disappointment was right-hander Emmet Sheehan, whose struggles continued in another difficult outing.Sheehan lasted just 3 1/3 innings, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four. He threw 82 pitches, only 47 for strikes, and allowed a pair of home runs as his ERA climbed to 5.32.The Orioles wasted little time putting pressure on him.Ryan Ward launched a solo homer in the second inning to extend Baltimore’s lead to 3-1. An inning later, Colton Cowser crushed a home run to center field to make it 4-1.Cowser delivered the knockout blow in the fourth. With runners aboard and the Dodgers already trailing, Cowser lined a single to center field that plated two more runs and stretched Baltimore’s advantage to 6-1. Moments later, Dave Roberts emerged from the dugout to remove Sheehan, ending another frustrating afternoon for a pitcher still trying to find consistency.“I think just being a little more consistent with my mechanics and more consistent on where I'm putting the ball,” Sheehan said when asked what needs to improve.Later, his frustration became even more apparent.“I think my execution was really bad,” Sheehan said. “At this point, my coaches, teammates, the fans, they all deserve better than what I'm putting out there right now. I can tell you I'm giving 100%. That's never going to change. That's all I can say.”Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Emmet Sheehan (80) goes into the windup against the Baltimore Orioles during the third inning at Dodger Stadium. Jonathan Hui-Imagn ImagesLos Angeles Dodgers pitcher Emmet Sheehan (80) goes into the windup against the Baltimore Orioles during the third inning at Dodger Stadium. The honesty reflected the reality.Sheehan has flashed the talent that made him an intriguing young arm, but too often lately, mistakes in the strike zone have been punished. Sunday was another example. Baltimore consistently found barrels against fastballs that leaked over the plate and capitalized on opportunities when Sheehan fell behind in counts.Roberts acknowledged afterward that the right-hander is still searching for answers.“It just hasn't been where we needed to be, where he wants it to be,” Roberts said. “Right now he's probably searching a little bit, but he'll get a start this next one, and we'll see where it takes us.”The game unraveled further once Sheehan departed.Jack Dreyer inherited runners on first and second with one out in the fourth inning, but both eventually scored as Baltimore extended its lead. By the late innings, the Orioles were piling on.Pete Alonso delivered the loudest blow of the afternoon, crushing a three-run homer to right-center field in the seventh inning for his 18th home run of the season, pushing the lead to 10-1.Baltimore Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso (25) hits a three-run home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers during seventh inning at Dodger Stadium. Jonathan Hui-Imagn ImagesBaltimore Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso (25) hits a three-run home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers during seventh inning at Dodger Stadium.Blaze Alexander added a two-run shot in the eighth, capping Baltimore’s six-run explosion over the final two innings and completing the rout. The Dodgers’ offense offered little resistance. The Dodgers managed just five hits and one run, continuing an uncharacteristically quiet stretch at the plate. Shohei Ohtani collected a second-inning single and a walk before Roberts removed him in the seventh inning with the game well out of reach.“Shohei is fine,” Roberts said. “I just wanted to get him out of that game.”Kyle Tucker endured another rough afternoon, going 0-for-4 and seeing his batting average fall to .234. Even more concerning was the complete lack of production from the bottom of the lineup. Tucker, Ryan Ward, Alex Freeland and Chuckie Robinson combined to go 0-for-14.The offensive approach frustrated Roberts as much as the final score.“We're taking hittable strikes and chasing spin,” Roberts said. “It's just not who we are.”That sentiment summed up the entire series. The Dodgers entered the weekend looking to build momentum before a demanding road trip. Instead, they dropped the series and finished June’s home schedule with one of their most lopsided defeats of the season. Now the focus shifts to the road. The Dodgers head out for a three-city trip through Minnesota, San Diego and Sacramento beginning Monday against the Twins. Eric Lauer is scheduled to start the opener. For the Dodgers, the timing may be welcome. After an afternoon where their starter couldn't find command, their hitters couldn't find answers, and the Orioles couldn't stop scoring, a change of scenery might be exactly what they need.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWorld Cup: Cape Verde stun another former champions as Uruguay in danger of early exitWorld Cup: Cape Verde stun another former champions as Uruguay in danger of early exitCape Verde continued their surprising run in their World Cup debut with a stunning 2-2 draw with the inaugural champions Uruguay. Spain lead the group with four points, while the two teams and Saudi Arabia also have the opportunity to make it into the Round of 32.Following their brilliant goalless draw with Spain, Kevin Lenini scored Cape Verde's first-ever World Cup goal from a direct free-kick. The 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha then conceded two goals in the closing stages of the first-half as wingers Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio turned the game around. However, the debutants fought back to earn a deserved point after an entertaining encounter. Helio Varela saved his first international goal for the grand stage as he scored three minutes after his introduction with a composed finish. Former Eintracht Frankfurt, St. Pauli and Schalke attacker Rodrigo Zalazar is still waiting for his tournament debut, while Guillermo Varela played the entire game for Uruguay once again. The right-back has played a single season for Eintracht Frankfurt nine years ago, on loan from Manchester United. Both teams drew their first two games of the tournament. Cape Verde will face bottom-placed Saudi Arabia in the final round of the group stage, while Uruguay take on Spain in what would be a stern test for Marcelo Bielsa's men.0 Commentarii 0 Distribuiri 4 Views 0 previzualizare
