The message Julian Alvarez sent to PSG, Arsenal: ‘Thanks, but I want to go to Barcelona’
The message Julian Alvarez sent to PSG, Arsenal: ‘Thanks, but I want to go to Barcelona’Not many expected Julian Alvarez to really step forward and make a public statement requesting a departure from Atletico Madrid. The player, however, surprised everyone after Argentina’s win over Austria last night as he came out to do exactly that, and the pressure on Atletico Madrid has mounted ever since.“The best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,” Alvarez confessed to the media last night. Barcelona, now, are looking to return with a bigger bid.Only one destination in mindAs reported by Fabrizio Romano in a recent update, Alvarez’s ‘dream’ is restricted to Barcelona and the player’s open admission was made keeping only one club in mind and not asking for a general transfer. The Italian journalist reports that PSG and Arsenal have both made approaches for Alvarez, but the player has turned them down with no hesitation. Julian Alvarez only wants Barcelona. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)“Thanks, but I want to go to Barcelona,” is what the player told both interested parties.Needless to say, the pressure is now on Atletico Madrid who must reconcile with the fact that a departure may well be the best solution for all parties involved. Further, Barcelona also face some pressure to help the player fulfil his dream after he came out openly to ask for the move.A difficult negotiationWithout Alvarez’s public gesture, a move to Barcelona was next to impossible given Atletico Madrid’s firm chance. His statement makes it possible, but it still remains very challenging.Los Rojiblancos, dealing with denial, are struggling to process the evolution of the situation. Instead of accepting the decision with grace, they are now looking to take legal action against the Blaugrana for making contact with a player under contract.A deal will be far from easy. (Photo by Charlotte Wilson/Getty Images)Atletico Madrid are said to be furious with how Barcelona conduct their business and are reportedly opposed to selling to the Catalans under any circumstances. For a move to go through, thus, will require all the stars to line up.Last season, Alvarez racked up eight goals and four assists in 29 league appearances playing for an Atletico Madrid that did not play the most attacking football. He is seen to have the right profile for Barcelona’s style of play, and the Catalans will return with a new proposal soon.

Fever's Caitlin Clark nearing one-game suspension after fifth technical foul
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is inching closer to a one-game suspension. Clark picked up her fifth technical foul of the season in the Fever's 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday, June 22, for clapping during an altercation that resulted in technical fouls being called on Indiana's Clark, Sophie Cunningham and Myisha Hines-Allen, in addition to Phoenix's DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas. Under WNBA rules, a player or coach is automatically suspended for one game upon receiving their eighth technical foul during the regular season. Every two additional technical fouls received during the regular season will result in an additional one-game suspension. Although Clark publicly stated she has deserved several technical fouls throughout the first 16 games the season, she disagreed with the one called against her on Monday."It's ridiculous. I got a technical for clapping, so we should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game that I'm going to be suspended for if I'm going to get technicals for clapping," said Clark, who finished with 24 points and nine assists. "If any technical should be taken away, it should be that one...I don't understand it."More: More fouls, more frustration: What’s really going on with WNBA officiating?Caitlin Clark after picking up her fifth technical foul of the season: "We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game that I'm gonna be suspended for."A player is suspended for one game upon accumulating eight technical fouls during the regular season.— Cydney Henderson (@CydHenderson) June 23, 2026If the technical foul against Clark isn't rescinded, she'll be three technical fouls away from a one-game suspension with 28 more regular-season games left in the season for the Fever. And she's not the only one. Clark and Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese are tied for the technical fouls this season with five each. There's been an uptick in technical fouls this season as players adjust to the new freedom of movement emphasis. There have been 98 technical fouls called, including three rescinded, compared to 53 at this point last season. (The total includes all types of technical fouls, not just unsportsmanlike conduct.) Despite the drastic increase in technicals, Sue Blauch, the WNBA’s head of referee performance and development, told USA TODAY there "have not been any changes to our sportsmanship guidelines.""Respect for the game was not actually a point of education this season," Blauch said. "Players generally know what's permissible in terms of a heat of the moment response... We never want to adjudicate passion out of the game ... but overreactions to a call or a no-call ... clapping at an official, waving 'em off, things like that. Obviously there's some magic words that fall into that category, but there's no change there."Caitlin Clark needs 'to be more aware'Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White said Clark needs to play with a certain level awareness as she approaches suspension territory over technical fouls."Certainly I think there are some that we could do without. There are natural things that happen that the energy of the game creates when you do get those," White said. "But there are some that we can be a little bit more in control of. And so yes, we'll continue to remind (Clark) and I think she has to have an awareness."Clark said she isn't going to change the way she plays basketball, adding, "I'm going to play with passion and if they're going to give me a technical foul for clapping, that's their choice."Angel Reese picks up fifth technical Angel Reese was called for her fifth technical foul of the season with 1:16 remaining in the Dream's 94-87 win over the Toronto Tempo. The foul was upgraded to a hostile act, which the Dream plans to appeal, Atlanta head coach Karl Smesko said."The (officials) said it rose to that. I didn't see it that way," Smesko said in his postgame presser. "I'm sure we'll be putting in an appeal for it. I think this one we have a good chance of getting reduced, but we'll see. We'll do our part to make sure that we put it in, we kind of explain what we see with it and hopefully the league will come to the right conclusion."Last season, Reese served out a one-game suspension on Sept. 5, 2025, after accruing eight technical fouls.Caitlin Clark technical fouls this seasonWednesday, May 13: Clark was whistled for her first technical foul of the season vs. the Los Angeles Sparks for arguing an offensive foul as the Fever were heading to the locker room for halftime. After the Fever's 87-78 victory, Clark took responsibility for the tech and praised the officials: "The refs are doing a tremendous job. I deserved the technical they gave me. It's great for the game, they are going to keep the hands off, they are going to make the play be good."Monday, May 22: Clark and the Golden State Valkyries' Janelle Salaün were called for offsetting technicals after a dustup under the basket as the halftime buzzer rang. Clark appeared to swat at the ball and caught Salaun's arm. Salaun responded with an elbow before they were both separated and rung up. Clark was also called for a Flagrant Foul 1 for setting a hard screen on Veronica Burton in the fourth.Thursday, June 11: In the Fever's 114-106 overtime win over the Chicago Sky, Clark emphatically swung her arm in the air toward the referee after no foul was called on her driving layup attempt. Clark said the technical was "definitely deserved" and added to the team's momentum. "I wanted it," she said.Saturday, June 13:Clark picked up her fourth technical foul of the season in the Fever's 85-75 win over the Connecticut Sun. She left the game with 22 seconds to go after getting a technical foul. Clark said she deserved it.Monday, June 22: In the Fever's 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury, Clark and Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner got tangled up in the paint while jockeying for position. Clark was called for a personal foul, but tensions boiled over after the whistle. Clark was called for a technical foul for clapping, while offsetting technicals were called on Sophie Cunningham and Bonner, in addition to Myisha Hines-Allen and Alyssa Thomas.Reach USA TODAY National Women’s Sports Reporter Cydney Henderson at chenderson@gannett.com and follow her on X at @CydHenderson.The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — Download for award-winning coverage, crosswords, audio storytelling, the eNewspaper and more. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Fever guard Caitlin Clark nears suspension after fifth technical foul

Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia Prediction: World Cup 2026 Preview & Best Bets
Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia Prediction: World Cup 2026 Preview & Best BetsCape Verde’s fairy-tale World Cup debut reaches its defining moment in Houston, while Saudi Arabia’s tournament survival hangs by a thread…Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia kicks off at 19:00 local time on 26 June 2026 at NRG Stadium, Houston. This Group H Matchday 3 fixture is live on ITV and ITVX in the United Kingdom.Group H standings heading into Matchday 3: POPULARBest World Cup 2026 Welcome Bonus 10 EXCEPTIONAL BetfredBetfredBet and Get New Bettor Bonus of £50 in Free Bets BET NOWWhat’s At StakeWith Spain already through and Uruguay sitting on two points, this game is a straight shootout for the second knockout spot. Cape Verde need only a draw to secure at minimum a strong chance of progression, but a win would seal their place with a game to spare and complete one of the most remarkable debut campaigns in World Cup history. Saudi Arabia, on just one point and with a goal difference of -4 after their 4-0 loss to Spain, must win here and hope results go their way, making this a genuine must-win occasion for the Green Falcons.VerdictCape Verde have been quietly extraordinary in this group, holding Spain to a 0-0 draw before scoring their first World Cup goals to snatch a 2-2 draw with Uruguay, and their unbeaten record makes them the value pick here. Cape Verde to win or draw at 11/8 represents real appeal given Saudi Arabia’s desperate need to chase the game and Cape Verde’s defensive resilience across both group outings.Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia Match PreviewNobody scripted this. Cape Verde, making their first ever appearance at a World Cup, arrive at Matchday 3 in a position that the small island nation could scarcely have dreamed of. A composed 0-0 against one of the tournament favourites in Spain, followed by a thrilling 2-2 comeback against Uruguay, has left the Blue Sharks with two points and genuine belief. Hélio Varela and Kevin Pina have already written their names into Cape Verdean football history by scoring the country’s first ever World Cup goals.Saudi Arabia’s situation could not be more different. A 1-1 draw with Uruguay offered some early promise, but the 4-0 thrashing by Spain exposed significant defensive vulnerabilities that Rui Aguas will look to exploit. The Green Falcons have conceded five goals in two games, their goal difference of -4 is the worst in the group, and they face the grim reality that only a win will keep their knockout hopes alive. Manager H. Renard knows his side must abandon any caution and go in search of goals. That dynamic shapes this game in Cape Verde’s favour. Saudi Arabia will be forced to commit men forward, which opens space for Cape Verde’s quick forwards on the counter. Rui Aguas has built a defensively solid structure throughout the tournament, and inviting pressure before hitting on the break is precisely the kind of game that suits a debutant side with growing confidence and nothing to lose.Team FormCape Verde – Last 5 Results– Uruguay (A): Drew 2-2, FIFA World Cup – Spain (A): Drew 0-0, FIFA World Cup – Bermuda (N): Lost 0-3, Friendly – Serbia (N): Won 3-0, Friendly – Finland (N): Drew 1-1, FIFA SeriesCape Verde’s World Cup form is the part that matters, and it has been genuinely impressive. Back-to-back draws against Spain and Uruguay, two sides with combined tournament pedigree that dwarfs anything Cape Verde have faced, shows a tactical maturity that goes beyond the romantic storyline. The pre-tournament friendly loss to Bermuda can be set aside as a preparation blip; what Rui Aguas has built for the real thing looks cohesive and hard to break down.Saudi Arabia – Last 5 Results– Spain (A): Lost 0-4, FIFA World Cup – Uruguay (H): Drew 1-1, FIFA World Cup – Senegal (N): Drew 0-0, Friendly – Puerto Rico (N): Won 3-0, Friendly – Ecuador (N): Lost 1-2, FriendlySaudi Arabia’s tournament form tells a story of two very different games. The draw with Uruguay suggested a team capable of competing at this level, but the 4-0 defeat to Spain raised serious questions about their defensive structure and their ability to handle pace and quality in behind. Firas Al-Buraikan has been their most dangerous attacking outlet in recent games, but the Green Falcons have struggled to create consistent chances against well-organised opposition.Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia OddsHere is a summary of the best available Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia betting odds from leading operators:Team NewsCape Verde head into this fixture off the back of two creditable World Cup performances and, based on what we have seen across the group stage, Rui Aguas is unlikely to make significant changes to a setup that has kept Spain off the scoresheet and matched Uruguay blow for blow. The squad blends experience, with Vozinha marshalling the goal and Roberto Lopes marshalling the defensive line, alongside the energy of younger players pushing for the historic result.Dailon Livramento has been the standout forward in qualifying, contributing four goals across the campaign, and will be central to Cape Verde’s threat on the counter. Garry Rodrigues and Jamiro Monteiro bring the kind of experience in midfield that gives the side a platform to build from, while the goals already scored in this tournament from Hélio Varela and Kevin Pina show that the creativity is spread across the squad rather than resting on one individual.Saudi Arabia’s Abdulelah Al-Amri is the Green Falcons’ only scorer at this tournament, while Salem Al-Dawsari, who carries 109 caps and 27 international goals, will need to step up as the team’s most experienced attacking presence. The 4-0 defeat to Spain will have been a blow to morale as much as to the goal difference column, and H. Renard will need a significant response from his attackers if Saudi Arabia are to have any chance of turning this result around.Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia Predicted LineupsCape Verde (4-3-3): Vozinha; Steven Moreira, Roberto Lopes, Logan Costa, Wagner Pina; Jamiro Monteiro, João Paulo, Kevin Pina; Garry Rodrigues, Dailon Livramento, Jovane CabralSaudi Arabia (4-3-3): Mohammed Al-Owais; Saud Abdulhamid, Hassan Al-Tambakti, Ali Lajami, Nawaf Boushal; Mohamed Kanno, Abdullah Al-Khaibari, Musab Al-Juwayr; Salem Al-Dawsari, Firas Al-Buraikan, Saleh Al-ShehriPredicted lineups based on available squad information – starting XIs to be confirmed closer to kick-off.Key Tactical MatchupThe duel to watch is Cape Verde’s defensive block against Salem Al-Dawsari’s ability to find pockets of space in behind. Saudi Arabia’s most capped and prolific attacker will be tasked with unlocking a Cape Verde rearguard that has conceded just twice in this tournament, both against Uruguay rather than on defensive errors. Roberto Lopes and Logan Costa have been solid as a central defensive pairing, and their composure against Uruguay’s pressure showed they can handle physical forwards. Al-Dawsari’s movement and experience give Saudi Arabia their best chance of breaking the Cape Verdean shape, but if Cape Verde’s midfield three can squeeze the supply lines and keep Kanno quiet, the Green Falcons will struggle to generate the volume of chances their goal difference deficit demands.Best Bets POPULARBest World Cup 2026 Welcome Bonus 10 EXCEPTIONAL BetfredBetfredBet and Get New Bettor Bonus of £50 in Free Bets BET NOW 9.9 EXCEPTIONAL HighbetHighbetBet £10 and Get a £20 Free bet BET NOW 9.8 EXCEPTIONAL ParimatchParimatchSports Welcome Offer Bet and Get for a £20 Free Bet BET NOWMain Pick: Cape Verde Double Chance (Win or Draw)Cape Verde double chance @ 11/8. Cape Verde have not lost a single competitive game in this World Cup, drawing against both Spain and Uruguay, sides with combined tournament experience that dwarfs anything Saudi Arabia offer. Saudi Arabia’s need to chase a goal means spaces will open up, and Rui Aguas has shown the tactical intelligence to make the most of exactly that kind of opportunity. With Saudi Arabia’s defensive frailties already exposed in a 4-0 defeat, backing Cape Verde to go unbeaten here is well-founded at this price.Goals Market: Under 2.5 GoalsUnder 2.5 goals @ 10/11. Both of Cape Verde’s World Cup games have produced exactly two goals in total, and their disciplined defensive structure makes it hard for opponents to find a way through in volume. Saudi Arabia are struggling for attacking creativity against organised defences, and while they need to score, that pressure can often produce a tense, tight affair rather than an open shootout. Under 2.5 goals has a strong base of evidence from both sides’ performances in this group.Scorer Market: Dailon Livramento Anytime ScorerDailon Livramento anytime scorer. Livramento scored four goals across Cape Verde’s qualifying campaign and leads their forward line with real energy. If Saudi Arabia’s defensive line is pushed high in search of a goal, there will be space in behind for Cape Verde’s counter-attacks, and Livramento is the player best placed to capitalise. He is sharp on the turn, direct, and has the finishing instinct that makes him Cape Verde’s most consistent goal threat.Accumulator TipFor those building a Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia accumulator or Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia acca, combining Cape Verde double chance with under 2.5 goals offers a well-reasoned double anchored firmly in both sides’ tournament form. A Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia bet builder could also consider Dailon Livramento to have a shot on target alongside under 2.5 goals to add a further layer to your selection. How to Watch and How to BetHow to WatchCape Verde vs Saudi Arabia is live and free-to-air in the United Kingdom on ITV and ITVX, kicking off at midnight UK time in the early hours of 27 June 2026 (19:00 UTC-5 local Houston time). Norway vs France Prediction: World Cup 2026 Preview & Best BetsTwo sides who have swept through Group I without dropping a point collide at Gillette Stadium on Friday, with a first-place finish and a favourable knockout draw on the line — and Erling Haaland vs Kylian Mbappé might just be the match-up of the tournament so far…Date: Friday, 26 June 2026Kick-off: 15:00 local (19:00 UTC)Venue: Gillette Stadium, Boston (Foxborough), USAStage: Group I, Matchday 3TV/Streaming (UK): ITV / ITVXGroup I Standings POPULARBest World Cup 2026 Welcome Bonus 10 EXCEPTIONAL BetfredBetfredBet and Get New Bettor Bonus of £50 in Free Bets BET NOWWhat’s At StakeBoth France and Norway go into this final group game with six points and a place in the last 32 already secured, but the stakes are far from ceremonial. The winner tops Group I and earns a potentially softer route through the knockout rounds, while the loser finishes second and faces a tougher path. France’s superior goal difference of +5 to Norway’s +4 means Norway must either win or match whatever France score to claim top spot — in a tournament this competitive, every marginal advantage in bracket positioning matters.VerdictFrance are the class act in this group and the best-priced Norway vs France betting odds of 4/5 on a France win reflect that gulf in tournament pedigree and squad depth. Kylian Mbappé has scored four goals in two games and France have conceded just once, making them difficult to oppose even at short odds.Norway vs France Match PreviewThis is the fixture Group I has been building towards since the draw was made. Norway’s return to the World Cup after a lengthy absence has been nothing short of spectacular — Ståle Solbakken’s side have scored seven goals in two games, with Haaland bagging four of them, and they’ve done it playing aggressive, front-foot football that has dismantled both Iraq and Senegal. This is their first World Cup since 1998, and the golden generation narrative has been real rather than hype.France, though, represent an entirely different proposition. Didier Deschamps has built a side that knows how to win at major tournaments — two World Cup titles, a runners-up finish in Qatar in 2022, and a squad packed with players who have performed on the biggest stages. Their 3-0 win over Iraq and 3-1 victory over Senegal were professional, controlled performances from a team that never looked troubled. They’ve allowed just one goal, their defensive shape has been immaculate, and Mbappé has been in the form of his career. The Norway vs France prediction hinges on whether Solbakken’s high-energy approach can destabilise France’s structure, or whether Deschamps’ backline absorbs pressure and punishes Norway on the counter. France have the individual quality and collective composure to control this match. Norway will cause problems — their attacking intent is genuine — but France winning and claiming top spot of Group I looks the most likely outcome in Foxborough.Team FormNorway — Last Five– Senegal (H): Won 3-2 (FIFA World Cup) – Iraq (A): Won 4-1 (FIFA World Cup) – Morocco (N): Drew 1-1 (Friendly) – Sweden (H): Won 3-1 (Friendly) – Switzerland (H): Drew 0-0 (Friendly)Norway’s World Cup form has been electric. Haaland’s four goals in two games have been the headline, but the team’s overall attacking output — seven goals, three different scorers — shows this is more than a one-man operation. The friendly results before the tournament were mixed, including a goalless draw with Switzerland, but once competitive football began, Norway clicked into gear immediately. Iraq and Senegal are not France, but winning both games and scoring freely builds confidence.France — Last Five– Iraq (H): Won 3-0 (FIFA World Cup) – Senegal (H): Won 3-1 (FIFA World Cup) – Northern Ireland (H): Won 3-1 (Friendly) – Ivory Coast (H): Lost 1-2 (Friendly) – Colombia (N): Won 3-1 (Friendly)France’s only recent blemish was a pre-tournament friendly defeat to Ivory Coast — since competitive football resumed, they’ve been relentless, winning three straight and scoring nine goals. Their 3-0 dismantling of Iraq was as one-sided as the scoreline suggests, and a 3-1 win over Senegal was similarly comfortable once Mbappé got going. Deschamps’ side are hitting their stride at exactly the right moment.Norway vs France Head to HeadThese two sides have met eight times in recorded competitive and friendly fixtures, with France holding the historical edge. The most recent meeting was a friendly in May 2014 in which France won 4-0 — a comprehensive result that illustrated the gap between the nations at that time. Norway’s most notable scalp came in an August 2010 friendly, winning 2-1 at home, while the head-to-head also includes a pair of 1989 and 1988 World Cup qualifying encounters that finished 1-1 and 1-0 to France respectively. There is no World Cup meeting between the two sides, making this a genuine first at the tournament. The historical record offers some mild encouragement to Norway — they’ve beaten France before and held them to draws — but the current context is very different. This France side is a two-time World Cup champion with depth Norway simply cannot match on paper, and the Norway vs France head to head at tournament level begins here with a blank slate.Team NewsNorway head into the match with their squad in good health and morale high after back-to-back wins. Erling Haaland is fit and firing, with four goals already in the tournament, and Martin Ødegaard has been pulling strings in midfield. Solbakken has largely settled on his best XI through the opening two games, and there is little reason to rotate heavily with a first-place finish within reach. Alexander Sørloth and Antonio Nusa provide depth in attack, while the defensive unit of Kristoffer Ajer and Leo Østigård has looked solid, though France will be their sternest test.France also appear to have no significant injury concerns ahead of the game. Mbappé came through the Iraq match without issue and is in outstanding form, supported by Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, and Michael Olise in wide areas. The midfield trio of N’Golo Kanté, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Adrien Rabiot offers both defensive solidity and creative thrust, while William Saliba and Ibrahima Konaté have formed an imposing central defensive partnership. Mike Maignan starts in goal, having been commanding throughout the group stage. Deschamps may make modest rotations given both sides are already through, but the expectation is that France will field close to full strength for a game that determines group standings.Norway vs France Predicted LineupsNorway (4-3-3): Nyland; Holmgren Pedersen, Ajer, Østigård, Bjørkan; Thorstvedt, Berge, Ødegaard (c); Nusa, Haaland, SørlothFrance (4-3-3): Maignan; Koundé, Saliba, Konaté, Théo Hernandez; Kanté, Tchouaméni, Rabiot; Dembélé, Mbappé (c), BarcolaPredicted XIs — squads to be confirmed.Key Tactical MatchupThe duel that shapes this game is Erling Haaland against William Saliba and Ibrahima Konaté. France’s central defensive partnership has conceded just one goal across two World Cup games, and their organisation against high-tempo attacks has been excellent. Haaland has scored four goals in this tournament, but he has faced nothing close to this quality of central defence. Saliba’s composure in possession and Konaté’s athleticism and physicality will test Haaland’s ability to hold the ball up and threaten in behind. If Norway can use Ødegaard’s creativity to pull France’s midfield and create space for Haaland’s runs, there is a goal in Norway. If France’s back four stays compact, Haaland may be starved of the service that has made him so dangerous in the opening rounds.Best Bets POPULARBest World Cup 2026 Welcome Bonus 10 EXCEPTIONAL BetfredBetfredBet and Get New Bettor Bonus of £50 in Free Bets BET NOW 9.9 EXCEPTIONAL HighbetHighbetBet £10 and Get a £20 Free bet BET NOW 9.8 EXCEPTIONAL ParimatchParimatchSports Welcome Offer Bet and Get for a £20 Free Bet BET NOWMain Pick: France to WinFrance to Win @ 4/5France are the World Cup favourites at 4/1 and the form book backs them up. Six goals scored, one conceded, and Mbappé in the form of his career. Norway are a genuinely good team making their first World Cup in nearly three decades, but France have the squad depth, defensive structure, and individual quality to control this match and claim top spot in Group I. At 4/5, it is not a long price, but the case for a France win is the strongest in the group.Goals Market: Over 2.75 GoalsOver 2.75 Goals @ 5/6Norway have scored seven times in two games, France have scored six. Both sides’ defensive records will face a far sterner test here than against Iraq and Senegal, but the attacking talent on the pitch — Mbappé, Haaland, Dembélé, Ødegaard — points strongly towards a match with at least three goals. The over 2.75 goals line at 5/6 looks well worth including in any Norway vs France acca.Scorer Market: Kylian Mbappé AnytimeKylian Mbappé to Score AnytimeMbappé has scored four goals in two World Cup games at this tournament and has been unstoppable. Norway’s defence has been tested by both Iraq and Senegal, but neither side carries anything like the threat that Mbappé, Barcola, and Dembélé represent. Backing the France captain to get on the scoresheet is the standout Norway vs France bet builder option — he has been the tournament’s most clinical finisher and faces a Norway backline that conceded twice to Senegal.Optional Pick: Both Teams to ScoreBoth Teams to Score @ EvensNorway have scored in every game at this tournament and their attack, led by Haaland, will not be shut out without creating chances. France’s offensive firepower makes them extremely likely to score as well. With four of the world’s most dangerous attackers on the same pitch and both sides needing nothing less than three points to guarantee top spot, both teams to score at evens makes for an appealing Norway vs France best bet.Odds Across OperatorsHere is a snapshot of the best available prices for Friday’s Group I decider at Gillette Stadium.Prices are correct at time of writing. Uruguay are second on two points following back-to-back draws, which leaves them needing at least a draw to keep their knockout stage hopes firmly in their own hands. With Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia meeting simultaneously, nothing should be taken for granted, and this match effectively doubles as a straight shootout for the group’s top two spots.VerdictSpain’s superior quality, momentum and clinical edge make them the clear selection here, and Spain to win at 1/2 is the headline pick in a match where Luis de la Fuente’s side should ultimately have too much for a Uruguay team that has yet to find top gear at this tournament. That price reflects reality rather than generosity, but pairing it in a bet builder with over 2.5 goals at 5/6 offers better overall value given Spain’s attacking firepower and Uruguay’s vulnerability at the back.Uruguay vs Spain Match PreviewThis fixture brings together two of international football’s most storied nations. Uruguay are two-time World Cup champions, their second title arriving via the legendary “Maracanazo” of 1950, while Spain lifted the trophy in 2010 in Johannesburg. The history between these sides adds genuine weight to what is already a high-stakes group decider at Estadio Akron.Uruguay, under Marcelo Bielsa, have underwhelmed so far. Two draws from two, conceding three goals including a wobble against Cape Verde, reflect a side that has not yet played with the cohesion Bielsa’s system demands. Darwin Nunez and Federico Valverde are capable of hurting anyone on their day, but they need service, and a midfield that has looked stretched at this tournament must tighten up considerably to contain Spain’s intricate passing game.Spain, meanwhile, showed exactly what they are capable of against Saudi Arabia, with Mikel Oyarzabal, Lamine Yamal and the supporting cast combining to devastating effect in a 4-0 cruise. Their only concern is the goalless draw with Cape Verde on Matchday 1, a reminder that Luis de la Fuente’s side can be caught in low-tempo games if they take their foot off the gas. Against a more dangerous opponent in Uruguay, expect Spain to be sharper and far more aggressive from the first whistle.Team FormUruguay – Last Five Results– Cape Verde (H): Drew 2-2 (FIFA World Cup) – Saudi Arabia (A): Drew 1-1 (FIFA World Cup) – Algeria (N): Drew 0-0 (Friendly) – England (A): Drew 1-1 (Friendly) – United States (A): Lost 1-5 (Friendly)Uruguay have drawn four of their last five and lost the other, a sequence that tells its own story. The heavy friendly defeat to the United States was alarming, and while the World Cup draws kept them in contention, neither performance suggested a team capable of taking down Spain. Maximiliano Araujo has been their brightest spark with two goals at this tournament, but Uruguay have yet to demonstrate the collective quality the occasion demands.Spain – Last Five Results– Saudi Arabia (H): Won 4-0 (FIFA World Cup) – Cape Verde (H): Drew 0-0 (FIFA World Cup) – Peru (N): Won 3-1 (Friendly) – Iraq (H): Drew 1-1 (Friendly) – Egypt (H): Drew 0-0 (Friendly)Spain’s 4-0 demolition of Saudi Arabia was the kind of performance that silences doubters, and their qualifying campaign, in which they won five from six and scored 21 goals while conceding just two, underlines their status as genuine World Cup contenders. The blip against Cape Verde and some unconvincing pre-tournament friendlies are minor footnotes. When Spain are switched on, as they were in Matchday 2, there is very little at this level that can live with them.Uruguay vs Spain Head To HeadThe Uruguay vs Spain head to head record is firmly in Spain’s favour. Across the last five recorded meetings, Spain have not lost once. The most recent competitive encounter came at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Spain prevailed 2-1. Before that, a 2013 friendly also ended in a 3-1 Spain win, and a 2005 friendly produced a 2-0 Spain victory. The one World Cup meeting between these sides came at Italia 90, where the game ended goalless. Uruguay are still searching for their first win in this fixture, and nothing about their form at this tournament suggests that record is about to change.Team NewsUruguay’s squad is without Luis Suarez, whose presence defined several of their recent tournament campaigns. Marcelo Bielsa must find a way to get the best from Darwin Nunez, who carries the burden of being the focal attacking threat, alongside creative support from Federico Valverde and Giorgian de Arrascaeta. Ronald Araujo and Jose Gimenez provide experience at the back, but the defence has been too porous across the opening two matches and will be severely tested here.Spain have no significant injury concerns flagged ahead of this fixture. Lamine Yamal, who came into the tournament carrying some fitness doubt, has been part of Luis de la Fuente’s plans and contributed a goal across the opening two matches. Rodri’s return to the Spain setup after injury added considerable steel in midfield, and with Pedri, Gavi and Martin Zubimendi all available, the manager is blessed with options throughout the pitch.Mikel Oyarzabal leads Spain’s scoring at this World Cup with two goals, while his overall recent form for the national team has been exceptional. Nico Williams offers constant directness on the flank, Dani Olmo brings creativity in tight spaces, and the depth in Luis de la Fuente’s squad means rotation carries minimal drop in quality. Uruguay simply do not have the same luxury of strength in depth.Predicted LineupsUruguay (4-4-2): Muslera; Varela, Gimenez (c), R. Araujo, Olivera; Valverde, Ugarte, Bentancur, de Arrascaeta; Max. Araujo, NunezSpain (4-3-3): Unai Simon; Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri (c), Zubimendi, Pedri; Yamal, Oyarzabal, N. WilliamsPredicted XIs based on available squad information. Squads to be confirmed.Key Tactical MatchupThe central battle that shapes this game is Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur against Spain’s fluid midfield three of Rodri, Martin Zubimendi and Pedri. Ugarte, capped 36 times for Uruguay and currently at Manchester United, is a destructive presence who will look to cut passing lanes and protect the back four. The problem is that Spain’s midfield rotates and presses with an intelligence that is hard to disrupt consistently. If Pedri and Zubimendi can operate in half-spaces between the lines, they will unlock space for Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams to attack Uruguay’s full-backs, who have already conceded three goals across the first two matches. Uruguay’s ability to win that midfield duel is the key to this game.Best Bets POPULARBest World Cup 2026 Welcome Bonus 10 EXCEPTIONAL BetfredBetfredBet and Get New Bettor Bonus of £50 in Free Bets BET NOW 9.9 EXCEPTIONAL HighbetHighbetBet £10 and Get a £20 Free bet BET NOW 9.8 EXCEPTIONAL ParimatchParimatchSports Welcome Offer Bet and Get for a £20 Free Bet BET NOWSpain to Win @ 1/2 Spain are the best price to win this match, and the case is straightforward. Luis de la Fuente’s side qualified with a record of five wins and one draw, scoring 21 goals and conceding just two. Uruguay have not beaten Spain in any of their last five meetings and are yet to win at this tournament after two draws. Spain’s quality throughout the squad is simply superior, and a point already in the bag means they will approach this match with confidence rather than tension.Over 2.5 Goals @ 5/6 Spain scored four times against Saudi Arabia and have genuine goals throughout their squad. Uruguay, meanwhile, have conceded three times in two games while also showing they can find the net themselves. The over 2.5 line at 5/6 looks well worth including given both teams’ outputs at this tournament. Spain’s attackers thrive in open games, and if Uruguay commit forward in search of a win they need to stay in qualification contention, space will open up on the counter.Mikel Oyarzabal to Score Anytime Oyarzabal is Spain’s top scorer at this World Cup with two goals already. His movement inside the penalty area, combined with a clinical finishing record for the national team, makes him the most compelling anytime scorer option in this fixture. He has been sharp whenever called upon under Luis de la Fuente and with Uruguay’s defence having struggled for consistency, he is well-placed to add to his tally.Spain to Win and Both Teams to Score Uruguay have scored in both of their group matches and carry enough of a threat through Nunez and Araujo to trouble most defences. Spain are good enough to win this regardless, but combining a Spain win with both teams scoring offers a more rewarding price than a straight Spain win alone, and the underlying evidence from both teams’ performances in Group H supports the selection.Odds Across OperatorsHere are the best available prices for Uruguay vs Spain from leading operators at the time of writing.Odds are subject to change. Bayern’s contract plans for Olise amid Real Madrid interest
Bayern’s contract plans for Olise amid Real Madrid interestMichael Olise is enjoying a fantastic World Cup for France. The Frenchman provided two assists in France’s 3-0 win over Iran, and has played a big role in helping his side reach the knockout rounds.Olise registered 26 assists for Bayern Munich in the 2025-26 campaign, but his future has come under speculation time and again.Real Madrid transfer threat for Michael OliseFlorentino Perez dropped a huge bombshell last month when he claimed that Real Madrid would make a €150m bid for a player who does not play in the Premier League. While he did not mention the name, it became quite evident that he was referring to Olise.Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to be interested in signing the former Crystal Palace winger, but Madrid “really want him”.Bayern have already made it clear that Olise will not be sold at any price this summer, and they are not prepared to listen to any transfer discussion regarding the attacker.Bayern Munich planning new contract for Michael OliseChristian Falk exclusively told CFBayern Insider that Bayern are planning a new contract offer for Olise, where they want to double his wages. The Bild journalist said: “Bayern want to nearly double Michael Olise’s wages in Munich as part of a deal to keep him at the club until 2031. You’ve heard the saying, if in trouble, make it double. “The trouble is from Real Madrid – they really want him, and they’re fully aware of just how good he was in the Bundesliga this season. He was the player of the year in Germany and has enjoyed a remarkable transformation since his €50m move from Crystal Palace. It wasn’t a €100m deal like Harry Kane’s, which is why his salary isn’t up to par with the likes of the Englishman or Jamal Musiala. He’s right in the middle of the squad’s earners, so about €15m. “Now, of course, he’s one of the most important players in the first XI, so he deserves more money. That’s why FC Bayern are prepared to give Michael Olise more money, and their argument is that if they’re prepared to offer more money, perhaps the France international can give them a few more years on the contract. In Germany, you can make a deal up to five years long, so the idea would be a contract until 2031. With that in mind, he can get closer to the top earners at Bayern Munich at around €25m a year.”Bayern Munich are planning to offer a new contract to Konrad Laimer, who is likely to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena.Olise has always maintained that he is enjoying his time in Germany, and Bayern see him as a big part of their future plans.

Modric keeping Milan door open as Amorim meeting set to shape Croatian’s future
Modric keeping Milan door open as Amorim meeting set to shape Croatian’s futureLuka Modric has not yet made a final decision on his future at Milan, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that the Croatian legend is keeping his options open ahead of a scheduled meeting with new coach Ruben Amorim in the coming weeks, a conversation that could prove decisive in convincing him to extend his stay at San Siro.Modric is currently focused entirely on Croatia’s World Cup campaign following a difficult opening defeat against England, and has made clear he will not address his club future until after the tournament concludes. The 40-year-old, who turns 41 in September, made 37 Serie A appearances last season, contributing two goals and three assists, and holds a mutual option in his current contract to extend for a further year at €3.5 million net per season.MILAN, ITALY – MARCH 08: Luka Modric of AC Milan celebrates the victory at the end of the Serie A match between AC Milan and Inter at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on March 08, 2026 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)Love of Milan and Amorim’s tactical vision could convince Modric to stay despite Champions League absenceTwo factors could tip the balance in Milan’s favour. Modric and his family are settled and happy in Milan, a personal dimension that should not be underestimated for a player approaching the final chapter of his career. And Amorim’s vision for a more carefully managed, selective deployment of Modric, acknowledging that weekly double fixtures in Serie A and Europa League are beyond realistic expectation, could represent exactly the right conversation to persuade him.The alternatives remain on the table.A return to Dinamo Zagreb, his first club, holds emotional appeal. A non-playing role at Real Madrid is also a possibility should he decide the World Cup marks his retirement from football. But according to Gazzetta, via CalcioMercato, the last word has not yet been said on Modric at Milan.MILAN, ITALY – MARCH 21: Nikola Vlasic of Torino is challenged by Luka Modric of AC Milan during the Serie A match between AC Milan and Torino FC at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium on March 21, 2026 in Milan, Italy. Man City still offer 'compelling sales pitch'
[Getty Images]Manchester City are closing in on the appointment of former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca as manager on a three-year deal after reaching an agreement on compensation with their Premier League rivals.City players who are not involved in World Cup action are expected to return for pre-season in mid-July.But without Maresca being in place, any player potentially considering their future at the club has remained in limbo as they are yet to meet the new boss for talks.Transfer business has continued in the background though and City have already had two bids rejected for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. They are expected to make another offer. The chase for the England international will seemingly be done with Maresca's blessing as the club look to replace departing captain Bernardo Silva.City Xtra's Freddie Pye told BBC Sport: "Given the absence of any pre-season training until next month, and even those activities being restricted to non-World Cup players, perhaps Maresca and City have not lost out on anything via a delayed announcement, with the Italian likely to be in close contact over planning for the new season."City have a compelling and desirable sales pitch to offer players these days, irrespective of the head coach - though not overlooking the allure of Guardiola. This is a winning project for players, a clear opportunity to win immediate silverware, unrivalled facilities and perhaps joining the start of an exciting new era."The futures of players may be a different story, as some may view the departure of Guardiola as the end of a career segment themselves, giving them little reason to remain if being part of the more successful seasons of late at the club."Read more about Maresca being close to joining City here

Commanders had one of the NFL's 10 best offseasons
You could make the case that the Washington Commanders were among the NFL's most improved teams this offseason. While most people will name the Los Angeles Rams as having the best offseason, and rightfully so, they were already a Super Bowl contender. One year after going 12-5, the Commanders finished 5-12 last season. Injuries and age caught up to the Commanders, leading general manager Adam Peters to say in his season-ending press conference that his goal was to get "younger and faster" in the offseason. That's what Peters did. He especially attacked one of the NFL's worst defenses, signing edge rushers Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson and Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle Tim Settle, linebacker Leo Chenal, cornerback Amik Robertson and safety Nick Cross in free agency. Then, in the 2026 NFL Draft, Washington selected Ohio State All-American linebacker Sonny Styles. The Commanders got younger, faster and better in a hurry. Offensively, Peters added some help for quarterback Jayden Daniels, signing tight end Chig Okonkwo, running back Rachaad White, and wide receivers Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson, before using a third-round pick on wide receiver Antonio Williams. Most importantly for Washington's offense, Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin are healthy. How did the Commanders' offseason stack up against other NFL teams? Josh Edwards of CBS Sports recently ranked the top 10 offseasons, and he had the Commanders at No. 8. General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn microwaved their initial roster with veterans such as Bobby Wagner, Dorance Armstrong, Austin Ekeler and others, but the team is transitioning. The defensive front was a point of emphasis as the team brought in Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson, Leo Chenal, first-round pick Sonny Styles, fifth-round pick Joshua Josephs and others. Cornerback Amik Robertson and safety Nick Cross were good additions to the secondary. Third-round wide receiver Antonio Williams and tight end Chig Okonkwo should be immediate impact performers in the pass game. There's no doubt that Washington had one of the better offseasons. Could the Commanders have been ranked higher? Sure, but, as with the other nine teams on this list, it does not matter come September. Improvement will show in the win/loss column. As stated earlier, the Commanders will be better. How much better? Much of that depends on how they adjust to the schemes of new coordinators Daronte Jones and David Blough. But if Daniels remains healthy, Washington believes it will be back in the playoffs. PSG to rival Liverpool for Yan Diomande as Luis Enrique eyes Barcola replacement
PSG to rival Liverpool for Yan Diomande as Luis Enrique eyes Barcola replacementIvory Coast forward Yan Diomande has become one of the hottest prospects on the market, with half the clubs in Europe vying for his signature. At the moment, Liverpool are believed to be leading the race to sign the RB Leipzig star, but TyC Sports reports that Paris Saint-Germain could provide serious competition for the Reds.Diomande’s stock has gone through the roof over the past year, making him one of the most talked-about prospects across the continent. His impressive performances have put interested clubs on red alert, although Leipzig are heavily reluctant to sanction a move, having just brought him in last summer. The Bundesliga side spent around €20 million to sign him from CD Leganes. However, Diomande’s valuation has skyrocketed, surging higher than any other player across Europe within the same timeframe. While they’re aware of the growing interest in the Cote d’Ivoire international, Leipzig haven’t named a price for their most valuable asset.Interestingly, they’ve already turned down a stunning €100m bid from Liverpool. While the Reds have refused to throw in the towel in the race for Diomande’s signature, they’re already exploring other alternatives.Diomande’s performances have given Liverpool fans plenty to anticipate if their side can finalise a deal. The 19-year-old helped Leipzig secure a third-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, notching 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 games across all competitions. He also created 17 big chances in the Bundesliga last term, averaging 1.7 key passes per 90 minutes.Diomande has managed to keep his foot on the gas heading into the World Cup. He arrived as one of the tournament’s must-watch teenagers and so far has delivered even though he’s yet to open his goalscoring account. While he’s focused on helping his nation qualify for the knockout stages, negotiations about his future are simultaneously taking place behind the scenes.Diomande is seen as a long-term replacement for Salah, but PSG are looking to scupper that deal. The French champions are open to parting ways with Bradley Barcola this summer and are ready to launch a move for Diomande as his replacement.

“Makes the right decision” Ollie Watkins heaps praise on Arsenal manOllie Watkins has praised Bukayo Saka as both players represent England at the World Cup, even though the Arsenal winger is still not fully fit.Saka has not been starting matches for the Three Lions as he continues to recover and is not yet at the optimum physical condition required by Thomas Tuchel. His minutes are being carefully managed to avoid aggravating any lingering issues, with the coaching staff prioritising long-term fitness over immediate involvement.Despite these limitations, he remains one of the most important players in the England squad, with his ability and influence widely recognised. The current England team features several high-quality attackers, and Saka is consistently regarded as one of the standout performers whenever he is on the pitch.Saka’s Importance for EnglandWatkins has highlighted how much he values playing alongside the Arsenal forward, noting his intelligence and consistency in attacking situations. Their understanding on the pitch has already contributed to several promising moments for England during the tournament.Saka’s role continues to be carefully managed, but his presence still offers England a significant creative threat. Even when not fully fit, he is trusted to make decisive contributions when called upon, reflecting his importance within the squad structure.Watkins Praises Saka’s Quality and Decision MakingAs reported by Mirror Football, Watkins said:“He hasn’t missed a day of training so that’s a good thing. He’s a top quality player and he brings quality to the pitch for Arsenal and England as everyone can see.“Managing niggles is very important for a major tournament. I’ve only played with him a handful of times and I feel he always makes the right decision. That’s the hardest thing to do in football.”Watkins’ comments underline the respect Saka commands within the England camp, particularly for his decision-making, consistency, and ability to improve the attacking flow of the team._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. UConn vs South Carolina leads top non-conference games in women’s hoops in 2026-27
The transfer portal has closed, the coaching carousel has stopped spinning, spring meetings are over and the summer recruiting circuit is underway. Before we know it, the 2026-27 women’s college basketball season will be here.Teams are just beginning to finalize and release their non-conference schedules for the upcoming season, and there’s already several enticing matchups. One of the premier events that’s returning is the Ally Tipoff in Charlotte, North Carolina, which will feature a doubleheader matchup that includes North Carolina vs. South Carolina and NC State vs. Kentucky. The organizers haven’t set the date yet, but expect to see it pop up in early November and be broadcast on an ESPN platform.Dates for other marquee matchups are already locked in. UConn will host Iowa on Nov. 8, while Tennessee will face Baylor in Nashville on Dec. 18. UConn will also make a trip to Nashville this season to face LSU.Looking ahead, these are the 10 non-conference games that women’s basketball fans should circle on their calendars:Notre Dame vs. VillanovaRome, Italy: Nov. 1The season begins when Hannah Hidalgo takes the Fighting Irish abroad for an audience with the Pope.Coming off a season in which she powered Notre Dame to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2019, Hidalgo is primed for a strong senior campaign and will be eyeing her third consecutive ACC Player of the Year award. Should she win it, she’ll join an elite group of players to secure the honor three times, joining Alana Beard, Alyssa Thomas and Elizabeth Kitley. After a trip to the NCAA Tournament, Villanova returns Canadian national team guard Jasmine Bascoe, who led the Big East in scoring in conference play with 19.5 points per game.North Carolina vs. OklahomaParis, France: Nov. 2For the fourth consecutive season, women’s college basketball returns to the City of Light. This one is a double-header featuring the Tar Heels vs. Sooners and South Carolina vs. Maryland. The clash between North Carolina and Oklahoma could be a bit more intriguing as it features a backcourt matchup between Aaliyah Chavez and arguably the top incoming freshman in the nation, Kate Harpring. The daughter of a former NBA player, Harpring was named the Naismith and Morgan Wooten High School Player of the Year and is ranked as the fourth-best recruit in the 2026 class by ESPN. Harpring is expected to be a big contributor right away for North Carolina, while Chavez leads the Sooners into a post-Raegan Beers era.Virginia vs. DavidsonDavidson, North Carolina: Nov. 5This will be one the first early glances at a new-look Virginia squad after their magical run to the Sweet 16 last season. All-ACC standout Kymora Johnson returns after dancing with the transfer portal, while Aaron Roussell takes the reins of the Cavaliers after taking Richmond to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments.Roussell will return to his old stomping grounds in the Atlantic 10 Conference when he takes his Virginia team into Belk Arena for a matchup with the Wildcats. Following resets at Richmond and Rhode Island, Davidson could be a contender for the A-10 title this season. Under Gayle Coats Fulks, the Wildcats have won double-digit games in A-10 play in each of the past two seasons, and sharpshooter Katie Donovan returns to lead the diverse squad full of international talent.South Carolina vs. USCGreenville, South Carolina: Nov. 15The second of a two-game series between the Trojans and the Gamecocks, this matchup will be played on South Carolina’s turf at Bon Secours Wellness Arena, about 100 miles northwest of its campus in Columbia. South Carolina won this matchup comfortably in Los Angeles last season, but superstar guard JuJu Watkins will be in uniform this time, back from the injury that sidelined her all of last season. Also returning for USC is Jazzy Davidson, who won the USBWA’s Tamika Catchings Award for being the nation's top freshman last season.South Carolina was without a few key players last season too, but Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins will be back to reinforce the Gamecocks’ frontcourt after a year on the sidelines.UConn vs. South CarolinaUncasville, Connecticut: Nov. 24Geno Auriemma’s Huskies started last season 38-0 before being upset by Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks at the Final Four in Phoenix, Arizona. This will be the first meeting since that game, which ended with a regrettable tantrum from Auriemma. It’s a result that reigning National Player of the Year Sarah Strong hasn’t forgotten. While Azzi Fudd is gone from the Huskies, they did bring in the nation’s second-ranked recruit, Olivia Vukosa. For South Carolina, reproving its status as a contender again after losing in the national title game could begin with a win over UConn on the Huskies' turf.UConn vs. DukeBoston: Nov. 28Kara Lawson’s Blue Devils will meet Auriemma’s Huskies for the first time since the 2024 Sweet 16. This time, it’ll be inside a venue where Lawson got one of her first big breaks as a coach, getting an assistant gig with the NBA's Boston Celtics.Lawson has quickly elevated the Duke program, guiding the Blue Devils to back-to-back ACC Tournament titles and two consecutive trips to the Elite Eight. Duke will be led by All-ACC talent Toby Fournier in the front court, but is searching for its new stars in the backcourt after seeing Ashlon Jackson and Taina Mair drafted by WNBA teams. Fournier going head-to-head with UConn’s Strong under the basket will be a matchup to watch.LSU vs. North CarolinaChapel Hill, North Carolina: Dec. 2One of the headlining games in this season’s ACC-SEC Challenge, this will mark LSU’s first-ever trip to the historic Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, the gym where Michael Jordan began his rise to stardom. This will also be the first-ever meeting between teams coached by Kim Mulkey and Courtney Banghart. Both coaches led their teams to the Sweet 16 last season, where Mulkey’s Tigers lost on a buzzer beater to Duke and Banghart’s Tar Heels were outmatched by UConn.LSU will be figuring itself out in its post-Flau’Jae Johnson era, but returns big-time contributors in Mikaylah Williams and MiLaysia Fulwiley. Mulkey also added another talented guard in the transfer portal, landing Jada Williams from Iowa State.North Carolina added a few strong reinforcements of its own in the transfer portal, getting Sophie Burrows from Syracuse, Achol Akot from Oklahoma State, Chloe Clardy from Stanford and Gabby White from Virginia.Notre Dame vs. VanderbiltNashville, Tennessee: Dec. 3A rematch of an entertaining Sweet 16 game from this past season, Notre Dame’s Hidalgo will once again go head-to-head with SEC Player of the Year Mikayla Blakes, who led the nation in scoring with 27 points per game.Under National Coach of the Year winner Shea Ralph, the Commodores are coming off one of their best seasons ever, notching a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and winning a program-record 13 games in SEC play. In addition to Blakes, Vanderbilt also returns SEC Freshman of the Year Aubrey Galvan.Arizona State vs. GonzagaTempe, Arizona: Dec. 6Arizona State exceeded expectations last season in Year 1 under Molly Miller, making the NCAA Tournament. The Sun Devils are now expected to be even better in her second season at the helm after Miller brought in a talented transfer class led by Ruby Whitehorn, All-Big Ten defender Rashunda Jones and MAC Player of the Year Madi Morson.Gonzaga flew a bit under the radar last season, but won the WCC Tournament and made March Madness, where they lost to Ole Miss in the opening round. Still, Lisa Fortier’s Bulldogs return two of the most talented players in the nation in Allie Turner and Lauren Whittaker. Coleraine sign NI winger McMenamin from St Mirren
Northern Ireland international Conor McMenamin has returned to the Irish Premiership, joining Coleraine from St Mirren on a long-term deal after a permanent transfer was agreed. The 30-year-old signed for the Scottish side from Glentoran in 2023 and started in the League Cup final win over Celtic last season.McMenamin won the last of his 14 NI caps in June 2024, with his sole international goal to date came in a Euro 2024 qualifier against San Marino. He also has had previous stints in the Irish League with Linfield, Warrenpoint Town and Cliftonville. He excelled in his two-and-a-half year spell at the Glens, netting 33 goals in 66 appearances to earn his move across the water. His arrival strengthens a Coleraine side that won the Irish Cup and finished second in the Premiership under Ruaidhri Higgins last season and will look to win a first Gibson Cup since 1974 in the upcoming campaign."It's a really, really exciting signing for the football club," said Coleraine manager Higgins."He will play in a system with us where we feel we will get him into good areas of the pitch and he can show his true talent."When his name came up in conversation, you might think about what his hunger might be like coming home, but when I spoke to him, he's a true professional and he's desperate for success."He made it very clear that he wants to help us win things and we're now in a position that we have to win, and he's excited by that."He becomes the Bannsiders' second summer signing, following the recent arrival of Ben Doherty from Derry City.Anaylsis - Another statement signing for BannsidersMcMenamin won the League Cup with St Mirren last season, starting in the final win over Celtic [Getty Images]The capture of McMenamin is a statement signing for what already looks to be, on paper, a really strong Coleraine side.Adding him to a frontline that already contains prolific duo Matthew Shevlin and Joel Cooper, who netted a combined 41 league goals last season, is a tantalising prospect for Bannsiders fans.It also shows the club's commitment to continue to recruit quality in all areas in order to finally get over the line in the race for the Irish Premiership title after they fell just short last season.McMenamin had only signed a contract extension to keep him in Paisley until the summer of 2027 in January, saying upon signing the deal that he felt "settled" at the club. However, once fellow Northern Irishman Stephen Robinson departed the Buddies to take over at Aberdeen in March, McMenamin fell out of favour under interim boss Craig McLeish and was limited to appearances off the bench. He will therefore come to the Showgrounds hoping to rediscover the dazzling form that helped him establish himself as one of the best players in the league while he was at Glentoran and the Reds. While at 30 and after some injury issues recently he may not possess the pace he did a few years ago, he is still a direct winger that knows where the goal is and will relish having a point to prove.

'It definitely made me a better person' - Jones on ACL injuries
[Getty Images]Former Coventry City winger Jodi Jones says his three anterior cruciate ligament operations made him a better person, just as former manager Mark Robins said it would.Jones was sidelined for a total of 897 days during a spell at the Sky Blues, which meant missing 130 games, between November 2017 and August 2021.He went more than five years between starting league matches, from the day he was first hurt playing for the Sky Blues in League Two, to featuring for Notts County in the National League after being sent out on loan by Oxford United in January 2023."Being a footballer is the best job in the world as you get up, you go to training and you play football, but you take it for granted at the time," said Jones on the Sky Blues Fancast. "When it happened, it was really tough at the time. I remember Mark Robins saying to me 'it will make you a better person and you will be so strong after this,' but at the time you don't really listen."Not in a rude way, but because it feels so far away. "It definitely made me a better person and a better man away from the football field. It's like it happened for a reason."It gave me a nice amount of time to focus on becoming a good father and I just worked on things I may have taken for granted before."And now, after putting his three ACL injuries behind him, Jones is enjoying his time at Notts County and looks forward to playing in League One next season."I wouldn't change it for the world," added Jones. "Would I have played at a higher level? Potentially. But I wouldn't have been able to stay at Coventry and create all those amazing memories, or met my partner and have the family I have now."Or create the memories that I have at Notts County, which are some of the best of my career."

The all-time leading World Cup goal scorers as Messi breaks record
The all-time leading World Cup goal scorers as Messi breaks recordLionel Messi wrote himself into the FIFA World Cup history books this week as he became the competition’s all-time leading goal scorerThe Inter Miami star grabbed a brace in Monday’s 2-0 win over Austria to send Argentina through to the round of 32 as group winners. The 38-year-old is the only player on his team to score at the tournament this summer, having bagged a hat-trick against Algeria in the opening week. That takes him up to 18 career goals in the competition, two more than previous record holder Miroslav Klose who won the World Cup in 2014 when Germany beat Messi’s Argentina in the final. The former Barcelona forward may not hold the record for too long, though. Kylian Mbappe has found the net four times this summer, taking his all-time tally up to 16 World Cup goals. It’s an astonishing return for the Real Madrid striker, who is playing at just his third World Cup.With both footballers potentially playing another six games, if their respective nations reach at least the semi-finals, there is a possibility that either Messi or Mbappe could reach Just Fontaine’s record number of goals at a single World Cup. ESPN picks a clear winner in Giannis Antetokounmpo trade between Bucks, Heat
ESPN picks a clear winner in Giannis Antetokounmpo trade between Bucks, Heat originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The NBA world is still processing one of the biggest trades in league history. Just days before the 2026 NBA Draft, the Miami Heat landed two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster deal that instantly reshaped the Eastern Conference. The trade sent Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami, while the Milwaukee Bucks received Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a pick swap and a second-round pick.At first glance, many fans viewed the deal as a massive victory for Miami. After all, Pat Riley landed one of the best players in basketball and immediately transformed the Heat from a play-in team into a legitimate contender.ESPN, however, saw things a little differently.ESPN surprisingly grades Bucks higher than HeatIn ESPN's post-trade analysis, Zach Kram awarded Milwaukee a B+ grade while giving Miami a B-. That difference made one thing clear: ESPN believes the Bucks came away with the stronger side of the deal. The reasoning wasn't necessarily because Milwaukee acquired a future superstar in return. Instead, ESPN viewed the Bucks as maximizing their leverage in a difficult situation after Antetokounmpo's desire for a fresh start became clear."The Bucks just about maximized their value in this trade," Kram wrote.Milwaukee received multiple young players, including Ware and Jakucionis, while also adding valuable future draft capital that could help jumpstart the franchise's next era.MORE: Pat Riley's biggest star acquisitions with Heat: Timeline of every franchise-altering move from Alonzo Mourning to GiannisWhy ESPN remains cautious about Miami's futureWhile Antetokounmpo instantly raises Miami's ceiling, ESPN questioned whether the Heat are truly positioned to win a championship right away. The outlet pointed out that Miami surrendered much of its young core and future draft flexibility to complete the deal. That leaves the Heat with fewer avenues to improve the roster if the current group falls short against contenders such as the reigning champion New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons.ESPN also noted that Antetokounmpo is entering his age-31 season and has dealt with injuries in recent years, creating additional pressure for Miami to capitalize on its championship window quickly."The Heat have vaulted themselves out of the play-in pack," Kram wrote, "but it's also a move that leaves the Heat with almost no valuable draft assets they can use for additional upgrades."Pat Riley finally lands the superstar Miami wantedDespite the cautious grade, ESPN acknowledged the significance of the move for Miami. Since LeBron James left in 2014, the Heat repeatedly appeared in trade rumors involving elite stars but never managed to close a deal. Jimmy Butler helped keep the franchise relevant, but Miami had not landed a true MVP-caliber player in more than a decade. That changed Monday night. Antetokounmpo averaged more than 34 points and 12 rebounds per 36 minutes last season and remains one of the NBA's most dominant forces. Pairing him with Bam Adebayo gives Miami one of the league's most intimidating frontcourts and instantly raises expectations throughout South Florida.Whether ESPN's grades age well will ultimately depend on one thing. If Antetokounmpo brings another championship to Miami, Heat fans won't care what grade was attached to the trade. But if Milwaukee turns those young players and draft picks into its next contender, the Bucks may end up being remembered as the true long-term winner.More NBA news:Pat Riley's biggest star acquisitions with Heat: Timeline of every franchise-altering move from Alonzo Mourning to GiannisBucks' Giannis era ends as Heat make massive championship swingBulls land defensive anchor Nic Claxton in blockbuster three-team trade5 things Mavericks fans need to know about new head coach Dusty MayThis is what a Timberwolves trade for Derrick White would look like

Kyle Bradish dominates, Orioles take series opener over Angels
ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 22: Taylor Ward #3, Leody Tavares #30 and Tyler O'Neill #9 of the Baltimore Orioles celebrate after ninth inning of a 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels during a game at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on June 22, 2026 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Scott Strazzante/Getty Images) | Getty Images If you didn’t know any better, if you hadn’t been watching the rest of the 2026 Orioles season, you could be tempted after a game like this one to conclude that things are definitely going to be okay with the Orioles. Maybe we are in the middle of where they’re finally doing it. Maybe. They certainly need games like this one to happen more often than they have been. Kyle Bradish had a masterful outing against his former organization, pitching eight shutout innings with nine strikeouts to help push the Orioles to a relatively easy 6-1 win over the Angels. The Orioles led this game from their very first batter. Taylor Ward, who hit 36 home runs for the Angels a year ago, greeted his former team with a 419 foot home run over the center field fence. Ward, traded for Grayson Rodriguez over the offseason, has not been homering at such a mighty rate for the Orioles. This was just his fifth long ball of the season. One run was nearly enough for Bradish to do the thing on its own. That’s not to say that it always looked that way. The Angels threatened to get the run right back in the bottom half of the first after a couple of one-out singles. We’ve seen many a game this year where the defense or the pitcher or both just collapse and give up the lead they just got. On Monday night, Bradish did not do the collapse. He rocked. That first inning was the closest they ever got to scoring against him. He rolled through the next seven innings, never allowing more than one runner to reach in any other inning. The only time he let the leadoff batter reach base, he induced a ground ball double play immediately afterwards. And, crucially, he was fairly efficient with his pitches, the real thing that let him get through eight. In all, Bradish tossed 101 pitches. It wasn’t a complete game, but it was the kind of start the O’s have been sorely lacking from him and others this year. While Bradish was dominating, the Orioles offense did not do that thing where they score early and then fall asleep. Well, mostly. Angels starting pitcher Sam Aldegheri did retire nine straight Orioles after giving up the leadoff homer to Ward. That streak came to an end as Gunnar Henderson drew a walk leading off the fourth inning. Pete Alonso muscled a soft liner that floated over the shortstop’s head into left field. We’ve seen the Orioles blow plenty of “two on, none out” rallies this season. Coby Mayo ended any question about that happening by connecting on a bottom-of-the-zone changeup and driving it out into the seats in left field. It didn’t clear the fence by too much, but enough is enough. This would have been a home run in 28 stadiums, but not Camden Yards. On the road, count it as an Earl Weaver special, with the Orioles now holding a 4-0 lead. The offense continued to add on for Bradish with a run apiece in the fifth and seventh innings, not that he needed it. In all, it was a strong, 11-hit effort. Henderson collected three of those hits, dragging his on-base percentage back over .300 for the first time since, if you can believe this, April 15. That’s another guy that the Orioles need to be able to have “back” if they’re going to sustain good things this season. Each of the top four hitters in the lineup scored at least one run and drove in at least one run.Unfortunately, the win did not come without a cost, as there was an in-game injury that caused more than a little bit of chaos. Starting third baseman Blaze Alexander fouled a ball off of his knee on the way to striking out in the second inning. An inning later, Alexander was unable to take the field and the Orioles had to put in a sub for him. Problem: With Jackson Holliday apparently not available due to groin tightness, with recent Orioles roster decisions leaving them bereft of any further bench infielders, and with Mayo already in as the designated hitter, that meant it was emergency substitute time. I’m talking Leody Taveras playing third base level of emergency, the first time Taveras has ever played anywhere on the infield in a professional career that spans back to 2016. Naturally, the very first ball in play after Taveras entered the game was a grounder to third. He fielded it and threw it to first. Alonso had to make a nice save to stop it from being an error, but still, the chance was completed. After the game, manager Craig Albernaz said that Alexander suffered a contusion from the foul ball and it locked up on him an inning later. The Orioles don’t seem to be concerned about a long-term injury problem here, but unless Alexander and Holliday can play tonight, they might need to make a roster move for an infielder so they don’t have to get weird again. Taveras only got the one ground ball chance before the Orioles gave up the DH to shift Mayo to third in the eighth inning. The Angels finally got on board in the ninth. Jorge Soler hit a leadoff homer against Rico Garcia. That continues a tough June for Garcia, as he’s allowed five earned runs in seven innings pitched. Even so, his ERA remains low at 1.95, and in Monday’s game that was the only guy he let on base, so the game never got too dramatic there towards the end. This is the sixth time this season that the Orioles have won three straight games. They have failed to win a fourth straight the previous five times. Is this the time they can change that, facing the team with the worst record in the AL? Tuesday’s game will answer the question one way or the other. Shane Baz is set to start the 9:38 Eastern game for the Orioles, with the Angels sending Ryan Anderson to the mound. Anderson has a 12.83 ERA in five games. It’s time to finally do this thing, Orioles. It’s long past time.**It is the longtime tradition on Camden Chat to choose the Most Birdland Player after each victory. What is “Most Birdland”? It cannot be explained. You just have to feel it. Sometimes, this is the most valuable player of a game, and other times, it is not. Let us know your pick for this excellent victory in the comments below.

Notre Dame Football Recruiting Roundup: What’s Next for this Irish Class?
Notre Dame is still on its football recruiting heater, and despite signing day being about five and a half months away, the overall class is pretty close to finishing up. Where Notre Dame Stands Right NowNotre Dame currently has 19 commitments for its 2027 class after Monday’s announcement by 4-Star WR, Julius Jones Jr. from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida. The Irish are ranked #3 in the nation by both the 247 Team Composite Rankings and the Rivals Industry Team Rankings. Those rankings could see a nice boost once Jackson Vaughn and Champ Monds get reevaluated after this season. Both players were 5-Star players in the 2028 class, but reclassified to the 2027 class. It’s more likely than not, they will see significant bumps this fall. In essence, the class has five 5-Star players.POSITIONPLAYERSTATEHTWTRIVALSRIVALS INDUSTRY247 SPORTS247 COMPOSITEESPNCOMMIT DATELSSean CraftNC6’4″215⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️6/24/25DLRichie FlaniganWI6’3″263⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️9/25/25OLJames HalterPA6’5″268⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️10/22/25CBAce AlstonOH5’11”175⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️12/9/25CBXavier HasanNC5’11”195⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️12/15/25RBLathan WhisentonTX6’0″200⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️3/25/26RBIsaiah RogersMA6’0″205⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️3/30/26SJohn Gay IIIFL6’1″190⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/22/26SZayden GambleFL5’11”190⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/25/26DLAidan O’NeilNJ6’5″240⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/1/26QBChamp MondsFL6’2″225⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/1/26WRJackson ColemanCO6’3″195⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/4/26TETitus HawkOK6’7″210⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/4/26OLOluwasemilore OlubobolaNJ6’6″295⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/12/26OLJackson HillCA6’6″300⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/14/26DLDavid FolorunshoIL6’3″285⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/15/26DEJackson VaughnNJ6’3″225⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5/26/26DEAbraham SesayPA6’6″235⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️6/16/26WRJulius Jones Jr.FL5’10”175⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️6/22/26What’s Left for Notre Dame to TargetThe class is starting to wrap up. The Irish are in great shape for Alexander and Igwebuike and I believe both will be Irish soon. Simien will announce on Friday, and it’s between Notre Dame, Texas A&M, and LSU. Parks should probably be in the same boat at Igwebuike and Alexander, but he did take a visit to Oregon last week after his visit to Notre Dame – so we’ll see how that takes shape. The Ending? If Notre Dame lands all four of those prospects, it all but guarantees another top 5 recruiting ranking, and it might even be in the conversation for a top 2 spot. It would give the Irish 23 commitments, which fills the roster up quite nicely, but will still leave room for around 10 players from the transfer portal. Of course, most of “how does this end” won’t be known until the end of December with National Signing Day and the opening of the transfer portal, but the Irish talent acquisition has been elite, and it looks to remain that way. Is Jaylen Brown still on the trade block for the Celtics? It's complicated.
It has become clear why the Milwaukee Bucks didn't take the Boston Celtics' offer for Giannis Antetokounmpo which included superstar Jaylen Brown. But for the Celtics? There are a lot of questions to answer after it was clear that they were willing to deal one of their best players.Given that Brown probably isn't happy with his name being thrown out there -- he sure didn't sound pleased -- the Celtics now have to placate him in some way... or they could turn around and trade him elsewhere. There's another way to make him happy, and that's to pay him a ton more. Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Brown is "extension eligible" in July, so that could be a chip the Celtics use to keep him in Boston so he and Jayson Tatum can continue to contend together.Reporting live on @SportsCenter -- on Giannis Antetokounmpo landing in Miami, the Bucks deciding between the Heat and Celtics, and the Boston-Jaylen Brown dynamics after he was offered in talks: pic.twitter.com/LXQwKb38oI— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 23, 2026Shams also reported that the Celtics aren't "shopping" Jaylen Brown beyond the Giannis offerShams On Jaylen Brown Celtics Relationship:“If this deal (Giannis trade) does not get done for the Celtics, it’s what is the future of Jaylen Brown… he’s got multiple years left on his deal… to my knowledge they’re not shopping him, this is a very specific situation.” pic.twitter.com/qzOQYnlHUE— SM Highlights (@SMHighlights1) June 22, 2026That's an intriguing wrinkle, but it was a risky one. If you don't get the deal done for the Bucks superstar -- and obviously they didn't -- you risk ticking off one of your best players and souring that relationship. So there's clearly some drama brewing in Beantown here, and we'll see how it plays out. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Jaylen Brown trade rumors: Could Celtics deal him after Giannis trade?

Jürgen Klopp reveals he wanted to bring Bayern star to Liverpool
Jürgen Klopp reveals he wanted to bring Bayern star to LiverpoolBack in 2023, Konrad Laimer left RB Leipzig to join Bayern Munich on a free transfer. However, if Jürgen Klopp had his way, the 29-year-old Austria international would have moved to Liverpool instead.“I wanted to bring him to Liverpool as a number six, but then he went to Bayern,” the former Liverpool head coach said in his role as a World Cup pundit for MagentaTV.While Laimer has mostly been deployed as a full-back for Bayern, Klopp said he would have used him in a more central role.“As for Laimer, I can say: in my team, he would play as a number six,” he added.According to reports, Bayern and Laimer are close to agreeing a contract extension beyond 2027.

Dricus Du Plessis pans Kamaru Usman for fight delay: ‘You didn’t want to sign the contract’
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 16: Dricus Du Plessis of South Africa prepares to face Khamzat Chimaev of Russia in the UFC middleweight championship fight during the UFC 319 event at the United Center on August 16, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC) Dricus Du Plessis believes Kamaru Usman has made a huge mistake signing on the dotted line to fight him.Their bout, which has been rumored for months but is finally official, will go down as the main event for UFC Fight Night Oklahoma City on July 18th. That’s not too long for us fans to wait, but “Stillknocks” hasn’t fought since his embarrassing loss to Khamzat Chimaev back in August 2025. He’s ready to go and discussed the newly announced fight on the Fight Forecast YouTube channel.“You think you’ve been waiting. I’ve been waiting!” Du Plessis exclaimed. “We’ve been talking about the fight for a long time.”“I was supposed to fight in April, got the injury,” he said. “Man, I think that was all for a reason because the fire in me to get back in there is like never before. I’m feeling great. Camp is going great.”According to Du Plessis, the holdup was all on Usman’s side.“Now I know you didn’t wanna sign the contract,” the South African said. “I know that for a fact. When I spoke to UFC, they said, ‘We’ve finally convinced him to sign.’ If you need convincing to sign, that’s a problem. But I can’t blame him. I would also not wanna fight me right now. It would be the smart move not to sign this fight, but you know, let’s go.”After Khamzat Chimaev dominated Dricus Du Plessis on the ground, there’s some questions about whether Kamaru Usman is a ‘smart move’ for Du Plessis. According to “Stillknocks,” it’s exactly what he wanted to prove he can hang with wrestlers.“I wanna go out there and prove what I’ve done,” he said. “Like I said, go out and figure this out and go show the problem that the middleweights have on their hands now. Because now I am more complete, and I was a complete fighter. But now I am complete in all areas, and I can’t wait to go and show that.”The loss to Chimaev snapped an 11-win streak for Du Plessis, and then the long layoff has people forgetting what an unlikely dominating force the former middleweight champion was. He’ll have the opportunity to remind everyone of his mettle on July 18th in Oklahoma City.

Colts roster breakdown: Who's a lock, on the bubble on special teams
With minicamp behind us, let's break down the Indianapolis Colts' roster through a different lens.In this series, we will be going position-by-position and placing each player into one of three categories -- are they a lock to make the team, likely to make the team, or on the bubble and fighting for a role? What this exercise can do is help bring into focus how many roster spots are actually available this summer, along with highlighting who may be on the outside and looking in.Rounding out our preview is the special teams unit.Roster locks (2): Rigoberto Sanchez, Luke RhodesThese are the only two players on the roster at their respective positions, and both continue to perform at high levels. On the bubble (2): Spencer Shrader, Blake GrupeShrader and Grupe are competing for the Colts' kicking job. Shrader missed most of last season after sustaining an ACL injury. Before that point, he was 14-for-14 on extra points and 13-of-14 on field goals, which includes hitting a game-winner against Denver.Grupe joined the team in Week 14 and was a perfect 10-for-10 on field goal attempts and 11-for-11 on extra points, according to PFF. The Colts then re-signed him earlier this offseason.Grupe is the far more experienced kicker of the two, which could prove to be an advantage for him. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Colts 53-man roster: Locks and bubble players on special teams

England vs. Ghana set to ignite Boston Stadium as fans flood Foxborough for World Cup clash
2026 FIFA World Cup action returns to Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Tuesday as England faces Ghana in a highly anticipated match, drawing fans from across the globe.Supporters from the United Kingdom have already made their presence known, flooding the region in what many have called a “British invasion.” But Tuesday’s match is also expected to showcase strong support for Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, as they make their fifth appearance in the tournament. On Monday night, hundreds of England fans rented out all four floors of The Greatest Bar.“Scotland thinks they started the party, we’ll finish the party,” England fan Shaun Bayliss said.Fellow fan Matt Hart added, “Really cool vibe, can’t help with the weather, but it’s just like being at home, really.”While Boston’s Ghanaian community is smaller, its pride is just as great. In Roxbury, excitement is building at RedRed, the city’s only Ghanaian restaurant. The eatery, which opened three years ago, has become a gathering place for fans eager to cheer on their team and share a taste of home.Owners say they’ve been closely following Ghana’s World Cup run and were thrilled to see the team secure a win against Panama in its opening match.“Our jollof rice is better than Declan Rice,” co-owner Will Akomeah joked, referencing England star midfielder Declan Rice. For many, the match carries deep cultural significance.“Oh, it’s a very big deal,” said Anna Akomeah. “In Ghana, we don’t have basketball and other sports. Soccer is the only game that Ghanaians really take pride in, so it’s everything to us.”Fans at RedRed are hopeful Ghana can pull off another victory against a tough English squad widely considered one of the tournament’s top contenders.Kickoff is set for Tuesday afternoon, with thousands expected to fill Boston Stadium for what promises to be another electric World Cup atmosphere in Massachusetts.Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts.Follow Boston 25 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch Boston 25 News NOW

Gary Neville heaps praise on ‘absolutely brilliant’ Liverpool target
Gary Neville heaps praise on ‘absolutely brilliant’ Liverpool targetNeville & Wright Praise Highlights Why Liverpool Are Chasing Yan DiomandeLiverpool supporters have become accustomed to seeing the club invest heavily when they identify exceptional talent early. Yan Diomande is increasingly looking like another player capable of commanding that level of commitment. The 19 year old Ivory Coast winger continues to enhance his reputation at the World Cup and Liverpool’s interest appears to be intensifying alongside it.Photo IMAGOReports over the weekend suggested Liverpool are preparing an improved bid after an initial €100m offer was rejected by RB Leipzig. It is an extraordinary valuation for such a young player, yet performances on the international stage are beginning to explain the excitement.Even seasoned pundits have been left impressed.Neville & Wright Pair Impressed by World Cup DisplaySpeaking during ITV Sport’s coverage of Germany against Ivory Coast, Gary Neville and Ian Wright were full of admiration for the young winger.Neville said: “Diomande on this left-hand side has been absolutely brilliant. Even when they double or triple up, it’s not enough to contain him. He’s too good.”Wright echoed those sentiments.“He’s lived up to the hype. His pressing is brilliant; his taking on is brilliant; his pace is scary.”Those are significant endorsements.Players who can dominate matches against elite opposition at major tournaments inevitably attract more attention and higher valuations.Liverpool will not be the only club taking notes.Liverpool Target Offers Rare ExcitementYan Diomande possesses attributes that are increasingly difficult to find. There is a directness to his game that unsettles defenders immediately. He runs at opponents, commits them and creates uncertainty throughout defensive lines.Photo IMAGOLiverpool have plenty of attacking quality, but genuine unpredictability remains one of football’s most valuable commodities. That is perhaps why the club appear willing to push so aggressively. The timing also makes sense. If Liverpool believe Diomande can become a world class attacker, delaying a move may only make matters more complicated in future transfer windows.Germany Match Underlined Growing ReputationIvory Coast suffered heartbreak in their defeat to Germany, but Diomande’s individual contribution stood out once again. The statistics paint an encouraging picture. He won 10 duels, completed four dribbles and produced two key passes during another eye catching performance.Photo IMAGOThose numbers support what the eye already suggests. He is becoming increasingly influential in high pressure matches.Liverpool’s recruitment department have developed a reputation for backing data with extensive scouting, and Diomande appears to satisfy both criteria.Transfer Fee Debate Will ContinueThe biggest obstacle remains the cost.Jay Bothroyd has already warned Liverpool against overspending, and that concern is understandable. Any fee exceeding £100m carries enormous expectations. However, market forces are relentless.Young players capable of producing elite level performances before their twentieth birthday are scarce assets.Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes now faces an important decision. Continue pursuing one of Europe’s most exciting prospects or walk away from an escalating valuation. For now, every strong World Cup display strengthens the case for action. The comments from Neville and Wright may prove to be another indication that Liverpool are chasing a player whose stock is rising by the week.

NBA reporter gives concerning LeBron James update for Lakers
Just days from now, LeBron James will officially become a free agent, and the world will find out what he will do with his basketball career moving forward. He could stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, join a different team or simply retire after 23 seasons in the NBA.Many have felt that it is very unlikely he will retire this summer, especially given the level of play he was able to sustain this season. But Ramona Shelburne said on ESPN's "SportsCenter" that while the Lakers have had "initial conversations" with James' representative, the superstar hasn't even committed to continuing his career, via NBA Base.“My understanding, had initial conversations with LeBron James' representative, but he has not even fully committed to returning next year in these conversations. The conversations were described to me as 'we're keeping in touch.' Okay, so there's no commitment to even returning or salary figures being discussed.“I think that’s been interpreted as something like, ‘LeBron is still assessing his options, whether that is retirement or whether that is other teams, and if there are other teams that he's looking at, what does that money look like?”Brian Windhorst reported just days ago that he believes James and the Lakers have been negotiating a new contract. The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer made $52.6 million this season, and while the Lakers are projected to have as much as roughly $50 million in salary cap space, it is very unlikely they will offer him the same kind of money he made this season. If he decides to leave and join the Cleveland Cavaliers or Golden State Warriors, he would have to take a steep pay cut, unless either team executes a sign-and-trade with Los Angeles. Cleveland will likely be limited to offering the taxpayer mid-level exception of $6 million, and the Warriors could give him the non-taxpayer mid-level exception of $15 million, should either team sign him outright in free agency. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: NBA reporter gives concerning LeBron James update for Lakers

WWE Raw takeaways: Street Profits win men's tag titles
WWE SmackDown on June 22, 2026, took place at The O2 Arena in London, and featured a men’s tag title match between The Vision and The Street Profits. The go-home show for Night of Champions saw the King and Queen of the Ring finalists face off during promo segments. Ethan Page picked up a win over Dragon Lee and LA Knight pinned Jimmy Uso after assistance from Solo Sikoa of all people. Here’s the top takeaways from this week’s show:Oba Femi gets interesting reaction during promoOpening the show was Oba Femi, who of course, had the entire arena chanting his name. Femi, who takes on Jey Uso in the King of the Ring final at Night of Champions, took the mic to deliver a promo.Femi teased what would follow a victory over Uso, pondering which title he would chase. When he mentioned the WWE Undisputed Championship, held by Cody Rhodes, the crowd booed. When he said the World Heavyweight Championship, held by Roman Reigns, the crowd popped. If Oba Femi wins King of the Ring, which CHAMPION would he challenge? 🤔 @Obaofwwepic.twitter.com/rwheSIejvP— WWE (@WWE) June 22, 2026This was interesting because Reigns’ title is supposed to be the No. 2 belt in the company, yet that's the one fans want to see Femi chase. Sure, Femi and Reigns teased a showdown after WrestleMania, and many have suggested that it go down at SummerSlam. I get it. I want that too. However, I can’t help but wonder whether WWE is cool with the top title not drawing as much interest at the moment. It’s not the biggest takeaway in the world, but an interesting takeaway from the promo segment, which also featured Jey Uso yeeting and firing a warning shot at Femi.Lyra Valkyria turns on Bayley after losing tag title matchThe first match of this week’s show was for the women’s tag team titles, as the champs Brie Bella and Paige took on Bayley and Lyra Valkyria. Prior to the match, the challengers cut a promo about how frustrated they were with coming up short, and how badly they needed to win the titles in this spot, foreshadowing what was to come. The challengers came out swinging. Bayley hit an early Bayley to Belly, and Valkyria night a Nightwing to stop the momentum from Paige’s hot tag. Neither resulted in a pin. A moment later, though, Paige hit Rampage on Valkyria out of nowhere to get the win. The champs took their titles and left, while the frustrations of another loss became too much.Paige and Brie Bella RETAIN the Women's Tag Team Titles! 😤 pic.twitter.com/JM2qur7YDE— WWE (@WWE) June 22, 2026Valkyria snapped on Bayley, tossing her hard into the second rope, and unloaded on her. She paused for a moment to think about what she had just done, but then hit Bayley with a Nightwing before leaving her in the ring with officials.OH MY GOD!!! 😱@Real_Valkyria has TURNED on Bayley! pic.twitter.com/Bq0EamstpX— WWE (@WWE) June 22, 2026The match itself felt like it never got into that second gear, and the finish seemed rushed, making for another forgettable tag title match for the champs. Valkyria turning on Bayley is the story here, and it’s about time. They both should be on the singles scene, and hopefully, they’ll get back to that after this feud is settled.Chad Gable’s apology to Alpha Academy not acceptedEver since losing his mask, Chad Gable has been on an apology tour. This week, he attempted to make amends with his old Alpha Academy crew. Gable invited Maxxine Dupri, Otis and Tozawa to join him in the ring. Gable gave each a heartfelt apology individually, but Dupri wasn’t having it. She refused the apology because Gable burned all the goodwill he had with her. Otis and Tozawa followed Dupri’s lead and left the ring with her. It was one of the best promos we've heard from Dupri. .@WWEGable apologizes to Alpha Academy BUT @maxxinedupri has no desire to FORGIVE him! 😳 pic.twitter.com/7AoZZ1LB9p— WWE (@WWE) June 22, 2026It’s a necessary part of Gables character development to go through this process, but the sooner the apology phase of this thing is over, the better. Let’s get back to having Gable cook in the ring. Luckily, it appears we’ll get that next week when he takes on JD McDonagh, which could lead to a match against Dominik Mysterio. Gable feels like he’s in a spot where the crowds want to see him succeed, but there’s no telling how long that lasts since he always came up short before.Street Profits win tag titlesThe main event of this week’s show was a men’s tag team titles match between The Vision and The Street Profits. Logan Paul was ringside to support his stablemates, but wouldn’t be there for long. The Street Profits got big momentum after a hot tag to Angelo Dawkins, connecting with a Blockbuster. Montez Ford went for the cover, but Paul put Austin Theory’s leg on the ropes, and didn’t even try to hide it. The referee appropriately banished him from ringside.Back-and-forth action continued normally for a good bit, until Breakker tossed steel steps into the ring. Paul reappeared from the timekeeper’s area, attempting to give Theory brass knuckles. Joe Hendry appeared and chased Paul off, but he left the knucks on the ring apron.SAY HIS NAME AND HE APPEARS!!! WE BELIEVE IN JOE HENDRY!!! pic.twitter.com/8fINwaz2YP— WWE (@WWE) June 22, 2026Then Seth Rollins appeared and smashed Theory with the knucks. Breakker chased Rollins into the crowd; meanwhile, Dawkins and Ford put the finishing touch on Theory to win the tag titles for the fourth time.THE STREET PROFITS ARE THE NEW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!!!! 🏆 pic.twitter.com/eiUKq48Kae— WWE (@WWE) June 22, 2026The tag straps are back around the waist of a true tag team. Here’s hoping WWE gives a real focus on the tag division going forward. It’s a long shot hope, but a hope nonetheless. Not that long ago, before the roster cuts, that division was on fire, especially when they showed WWE that they made a mistake by not having the multi-way tag ladder match on WrestleMania. After being off TV for so long, it’s good to see Dawkins and Ford win the titles again. This article originally appeared on Wrestling Junkie: WWE Raw takeaways: Street Profits win men's tag titles

Kevin Borjas working on his UFC rewrite after major upset of Lima
LAS VEGAS – Kevin Borjas met the media Saturday after his win over Andre Lima at UFC Fight Night 279.Borjas (11-5 MMA, 2-4 UFC) outworked Lima (11-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) to close out the prelims at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. It was the biggest upset of the event; Lima was more than a 6-1 betting favorite.Borjas missed weight by three pounds, which was the first such infraction of his career. He said that largely was owed to him accepting the fight on short notice. Had he lost to Lima, it would've been three straight. And combined with the weight miss, it may have cost him his UFC gig."The team got together and we called this Operation Lazarus because we really did rise from the dead. That's how people saw me – they took me for dead," Borjas said at his post-fight news conference. "But you evolve, you mature, you train, you get better, and that's what we did as a team. I surrounded myself with people that believe in me, people that wanted to make this work. Trust yourself. When people say things, don't believe them – stick to the people who are going to help you out. This is what we were able to do and again, I have an opportunity to rewrite my history."Borjas had losses in four of his first five UFC fights after graduating from DWCS in 2023. But the major upset of Lima – the first loss of the highly touted Brazilian's career – might be the spark the Peruvian needs for a flyweight jumpstart, despite the weight infraction."No one accepted fights against (Lima), and I will take on those fights," Borjas said. "I feel that I've matured, I've gotten better, that I'm ready. I think I belong to the elite, and I showed what I'm all about. I feel that I'm a better fighter than I was before, and that I belong here."I want to rewrite my history in this organization. That's what I'm here for.Check out Borjas' post-fight interview in the video above. This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Kevin Borjas working on his UFC rewrite after major upset of Lima

Who will Sixers pick during NBA Draft 2026? 8 options for 76ers at 22
The fanfare is over, now it's time to get to work.Mike Gansey, the newly hired 76ers president of basketball operation, will have his work cut out for him trying to figure out a way to thread the needle by fielding a competitive team while looking toward the future. While veteran stars Joel Embiid and Paul George looked up to the task during the Sixers' miraculous first-round comeback against the Boston Celtics, it was evident the team was lacking depth during a disastrous second-round sweep at the hands of the eventual-NBA champion New York Knicks.Along with the likelihood of numerous missed games between Embiid and Paul, the pair's salaries of $50 million plus prevent the Sixers from spending to solidify a lineup anchored by young guards Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. That's where the draft comes in.With salary-cap limits and a roster full of needs, Gansey will need to hit on his first pick to help to Sixers now and in the future. Here's a look at who Gansey and the Sixers might select:What pick did the Sixers have? The 76ers hold the 22nd overall pick in the draft which the team acquired when it dealt guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder in February. In the deal, the Sixers also acquired three future second-round picks for McCain — the No. 16 overall pick in the 2024 draft. The Thunder own the No. 17 overall pick which was acquired from Philadelphia in a salary dump that sent center Al Horford to OKC in 2020.Sixers draft picks 2026. Who will 76ers draft?Unlike last year, the Sixers don't have a pick inside the lottery but will have a chance to select a quality player in what experts deem as a deep draft class. Here's who might be available when the Sixers pick at No. 22:Allen Graves, Santa ClaraFreshman, forward, 6-9, 225, 192025-26 stats: 11.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 1.8 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.9 BGP, 51.2% FG, 41.3% 3PT, 75% FTOne of the most under-the-radar prospects in college basketball this season was Santa Clara freshman Allen Graves, who came close to becoming a March Madness hero. The WCC Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year turned heads after posting 30 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals on Feb. 7 against Washington State. His scrappiness and high motor is an area where Graves stands out among the best in this class and is likely one of the reasons he chose to turn pro rather than return to college. The only players under 21 with a higher box plus-minus, per Bart Torvik, were Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson. One name they may have their eyes on with the first-round pick they acquired after trading Jared McCain is Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson. In his first NCAA tournament game, the big man recorded a season-high 18 rebounds while also knocking down a 3-pointer and grabbing a steal. He followed that up in the Round of 32 by showcasing more scoring touch, finishing cuts to the basket for 17 points against Texas A&M. Cenac was quieter in the Sweet 16 but still pulled down 10 rebounds. 'I got to earn my minutes. I got to do the little things… Defending, rebounding, spacing the floor,” Cenac told USA TODAY Sports. "Whatever team takes me… they're getting a winning player that loves winning and is going to buy into whatever to help that team win." Cenac also impressed at the NBA Combine, posting a 37-inch max vertical and strong agility numbers for his size. P3 places Cenac within its 'bigs plus” model, a rare archetype combining traditional size with wing-like mobility. Evaluators pointed to his 'unique tools” and described him as a potential 'matchup nightmare” due to his movement profile and physical traits, which suggest his significant untapped upside.— Bryan KalbroskyKoa Peat, ArizonaFreshman, forward, 6-8, 235, 192025-26 stats: 14.1 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 2.6 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.7 BGP, 52.8% FG, 35% 3PT, 62.3% FTArizona forward Koa Peat is naturally bouncy and athletic with good positional size, a strong frame and a near 7-foot wingspan. Peat is also a solid rebounder and passer for his position. The All-Big 12 forward will need to improve his jumper to carve out consistent, high-impact minutes at the next level, but he's still worth first-round consideration based on his body of work so far. Peat arguably had the most interesting decisions to make when it was finally his turn to announce if he would stay in college or turn pro.— Bryan KalbroskyJayden Quaintance, KentuckySophomore, forward, 6-10, 255, 182025-26 stats: 5 PPG, 5 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.8 BGP, 57.1% FG, 0% 3PT, 30.8% FTJayden Quaintance recorded just one start during his sophomore campaign as he recovered from a torn ACL, meniscus and fractured knee. Evaluators are "consistently expressing concern around his medicals" about the big man, per ESPN's Jeremy Woo. The big man is still one of the youngest players in this class, though, and he showed elite flashes during his time at Arizona State and Kentucky. When healthy, he is arguably the most talented defender in this draft class and could help a team that may need frontcourt help. During his freshman year when he was just 17 years old, per CBB Analytics, he led all D-I players in blocks per 40 minutes (0.7) on 3-pointers, regularly swatting shots on the perimeter. While his draft stock is not what it once was due to health concerns, his youth and frame give him an opportunity to become a special player in the NBA.— Bryan KalbroskyDailyn Swain, TexasJunior, guard, 6-8, 220, 202025-26 stats: 17.3 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.3 BGP, 54.2% FG, 34.4% 3PT, 81.5% FTAfter transferring from Xavier to Texas during the offseason and helping lead the Longhorns to the Sweet 16, Dailyn Swain emerged as one of the more intriguing breakout players in college basketball. The All-SEC forward is versatile and contributed across the board on both ends, scoring efficiently in the paint and in transition. Another appealing element is his effectiveness in isolation, where he can create for himself against defenders. Swain is quick, bouncy and a solid rebounder, and his 81.5% free-throw percentage suggests promising shooting touch. While he has three years of college experience, he's still just 20 years old, the same age as several NCAA freshmen. P3 categorizes Swain as a 'kinematic mover,” a fluid, efficiency-driven archetype that allows players to 'get wherever they want on the court” and has produced the highest density of NBA All-Stars in its data.— Bryan KalbroskyLabaron Philon Jr., AlabamaSophomore, guard, 6-4, 175, 202025-26 stats: 22 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.2 BGP, 50% FG, 39.9% 3PT, 79.8% FTEven though the All-SEC guard was not playing at 100 percent during March Madness due to injury issues, he played well in the tournament, recording 35 points during a loss against Michigan. He also notched 29 points in his first-round game and 12 assists in his second. The guard averaged 22.0 points per game this season, and he improved his 3-point shooting from 31.5 percent as a freshman to 39.9 percent as a sophomore, while also managing 5.0 assists per game in the process.— Bryan KalbroskyIsaiah Evans, DukeSophomore, guard, 6-6, 186, 202025-26 stats: 15PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.7 BGP, 43.3% FG, 36.1% 3PT, 86% FTEvans scored 218 points when shooting off the catch, per Synergy, which ranked third-best among ACC players last season. NFL analyst names Panthers' top training camp storyline
On Monday, the NFL announced the reporting dates for training camp. For the Carolina Panthers, rookies will be arriving back to Charlotte on Tuesday, July 21 and veterans on Wednesday, July 22.For most fans, the biggest story regarding these 2026 Panthers is starting quarterback Bryce Young, and whether or not he can take the next step forward entering his fourth season as a pro. But it may be the other side of the ball that draws some attention.According to Zachary Pereles at CBS Sports, Carolina's defense and how much they can level up is actually the top storyline for the Panthers going into training camp. Pereles writes:The Panthers made the biggest financial splashes at EDGE (Jaelan Phillips) and linebacker (Devin Lloyd) in free agency this offseason. Add in standout returners Derrick Brown and Jaycee Horn, plus some other nice surprises such as Mike Jackson and some young recent draftees, and this defense should reach another level. What level it gets to, though, will be crucial.By now, we know that Brown, Horn and Jackson are going to do their part—no matter how underrated they might be by the national media. But the rest of the unit, including their new faces, are up for questioning. As for the big free-agent additions, much will depend on Phillips and how well he lives up to the massive contract the Panthers signed him to. We believe Lloyd will perform at a high level as he did last season in Jacksonville, but Ben Solak at ESPN recently questioned whether that success will transition over to Carolina.Another big x-factor will be the progress of Carolina's second- and third-round picks from last year on the edge—Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. If they both take big second-year leaps, they'll go a long way towards improving the pass rush, no matter what happens with Phillips. At the top of it all is defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who has to figure out a way to make all the pieces fit and finally bring that pass rush up to par.Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content. This article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers 2026 training camp: Defensive development named top storyline

Eagles training camp: Biggest questions facing every RB on the roster
If nothing changes between now and the start of training camp, the Philadelphia Eagles will arrive in late July with five tailbacks and one fullback on the roster. If Sean Mannion's offense borrows concepts from the systems popularized by Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay, fullback Carson Steele may have a clear path toward making the roster, maybe. At running back, however, the math becomes more complicated. Philadelphia carried three tailbacks for much of last season, and there is a reasonable argument that they could follow a similar blueprint again. That makes every roster spot important. Here are the biggest questions facing each member of Philadelphia's backfield.Saquon BarkleyHave Eagles fans already seen the best version of Saquon Barkley? This feels like an unfair question until you remember what Barkley accomplished during his first season in Philadelphia. Nobody expected him to join the 2,000-yard rushing club. Even fewer expected him to do it immediately after arriving. Still, history has always told us that following a 2,000-yard campaign with another equally dominant season is extraordinarily difficult. The physical toll alone makes that challenge daunting. Barkley followed suit and followed his Offensive Player of the Year campaign with a more modest 1,140 rushing yards last season. That's still a productive season by normal standards, but it naturally raises questions about whether his absolute peak is already behind him. The Eagles believe a healthier offensive line and a longer offseason could help reverse that trend. Another interesting subplot remains whether Howie Roseman extended Barkley too early or whether he simply secured a franchise cornerstone before the price increased.Tank BigsbyWill the Eagles remember how effective this player can be?Few players earned fan support as quickly as Tank Bigsby. When given opportunities, he ran with purpose, power, and aggression. He consistently fell forward, bringing an element of physicality that fit perfectly within Philadelphia's offensive identity. Many Eagles fans believe Bigsby deserved more touches than he received. They may have a point. If Philadelphia can find ways to increase its workload without diminishing Barkley's impact, the Eagles could develop one of the league's better one-two punches. The question isn't whether Bigsby can contribute. The question is whether the coaching staff will consistently make room for him. Will ShipleyCan Sean Mannion find a meaningful role for Shipley?Shipley remains one of the more difficult players on the roster to evaluate. His snap count increased from Year 1 to Year 2, yet his rushing opportunities declined. The Eagles experimented with him as a kick returner, but he never fully established himself there either. That's what makes training camp important. Shipley does several things reasonably well, but the Eagles still need to identify what he does exceptionally well. There is only one football to distribute among Barkley, DeVonta Smith, Makai Lemon, Dallas Goedert, and several other offensive weapons. Finding a niche could determine Shipley's future.Dameon PierceIs he competing for a roster spot or a practice squad role?Pierce enters camp facing an uphill climb. His rushing production has declined over the past several seasons, and he has never developed into a major receiving threat. If the Eagles keep only three tailbacks, Pierce may need to outperform multiple competitors simply to remain in the conversation. There are reasons for optimism. His kick-return experience provides additional value, and his former draft pedigree still carries some weight. The problem is that roster spots aren't awarded based on what a player used to be. Philadelphia will need to determine what Pierce can be right now.Elijah MitchellHow much tape can he put together for other teams?Sometimes, training camp becomes less about making one roster and more about auditioning for another. Mitchell may fall into that category. His familiarity with concepts that resemble portions of Philadelphia's offensive scheme could help him during preseason action, but the path to a roster spot appears crowded. Unless injuries change the equation, Mitchell's best opportunity may be using preseason games to showcase himself for organizations seeking backfield depth elsewhere. That's not necessarily a bad outcome. Plenty of players have leveraged strong preseason performances into opportunities with other franchises.Carson SteeleIs he already a roster lock?Pay very close attention to Carson Steele. Fullbacks are uncommon in today's NFL, but they remain valuable in offenses influenced by Shanahan-style principles. That's why Steele's presence feels noteworthy. If the Eagles intend to feature those concepts, Steele's role becomes obvious. He can lead block, contribute on special teams, and provide versatility that many modern offenses simply don't possess. The alternative would be to attempt to sneak him onto the practice squad and elevate him early in the season before he must be elevated to the 53-man roster. This article originally appeared on Eagles Wire: Biggest questions facing every RB on the Eagles' roster

Serie A giants interested in up to five Real Madrid players – report
Serie A giants interested in up to five Real Madrid players – reportAccording to a report from Italian outlet TuttoSport, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Serie A giants Juventus have set their sights on signing as many as five Real Madrid players. This includes the likes of Franco Mastantuono, Dani Ceballos, Fran Garcia, Gonzalo Garcia and Brahim Diaz. Real Madrid are expected to accelerate the exit operation after having completed four signings already. Despite that, though, the Los Blancos intend to sign more players, but to do that, they need to make room on the roster. The uncertain casesNotably, of the five players mentioned, Real Madrid are open to the summer departure of four, albeit with different conditions.Starting with Mastantuono, the Argentine did not have the desired impact in his debut season, and the growing expectation is that he could leave on loan to gather top-level experience.Gonzalo Garcia could leave Real Madrid. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images)Gonzalo, on the other hand, faces the risk of permanent exit considering the competition for places. As reported before, Real Madrid are open to the permanent sale of the La Fabrica youngster, but they will retain significant control over his future, possibly through buyback clauses or a percentage of future sales.Certain exitsAt the same time, the same cannot be said for the likes of Ceballos and Fran Garcia, who are almost certain to leave the club this summer. It must be remembered that Real Madrid have completely opened doors for Ceballos’ exit and, despite earlier reluctance, they are willing to give him the letter of freedom. This means the Los Blancos will not demand any transfer fee for the former Real Betis midfielder.Ceballos will be allowed to leave for free. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)Furthermore, Fran Garcia’s place has been called into question as soon as Real Madrid signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea.Right now, Real Madrid have four left-backs fighting for a single spot and Garcia is the most likely candidate to leave considering the current set of circumstances. Then comes the case of Brahim Diaz, who has been on Juventus’ radar for a long time, although the player has communicated that he does not wish to leave Real Madrid this summer. All in all, Juventus’ interest in these five Real Madrid players can culminate if personal terms are reached, something that will be difficult with Ceballos, as he is aiming to rejoin his boyhood club, Betis.

Offside rule in soccer faces pushback every World Cup cycle, but here's why it exists
Offside rule in soccer faces pushback every World Cup cycle, but here's why it exists originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. You can set your watch to it. Every four years, there's going to be a surprising amount of pushback against the offside rule in soccer (world football). Those who turn on the World Cup and are mostly new to the game will be surprised by it in some form.Either there's anger at how it's enforced, or confusion at how it works, or simply uncertainty for why it exists at all.The reality, though, is that it's a very logical rule. It may get a lot more scrutiny, and seem a lot more nitpicky, thanks to video replay reviews. But without offside, this sport wouldn't look anything like it does.MORE: With Messi, history and magic go hand in handHow does offside rule work in soccer?A player cannot have any part of his body that is eligible to play the ball (aka not his hands/arms) beyond the last defensive player at the moment the ball is played toward him. They use those freeze frames on the broadcast to analyze these calls. The player can't be past the last defender at the very instant his teammate is hitting the ball in his direction. If he's beyond, it's essentially a turnover, and the opposition gets a free kick from the offside spot.MORE: Cape Verde captures the magic of sportsCan you be offside on a throw-in?This is one of the quirks of the rule -- no, you cannot be offside on a throw-in.Can you be offside on a corner kick? You can also not be offside on a corner kick.Other exception to offside ruleThe one other main exception is when playing in your own half of the field. You cannot be offside in any way if the player beyond the defense is on his own side of midfield. This prevents the defense from pressing permanently high up.Why does offside rule exist?Simply put, without offside this sport wouldn't be the same. It wouldn't be close. There will always be narrow margins, no matter how you redefine this rule, unless you got rid of it permanently. And if offside was just gone entirely, it would have massive consequences. Offensive players could spend whole games "cherry-picking" at the far end of the field. Would defenders stay with them? Would the game become massively spread out at all times? It would get rid of beautifully timed runs and passes. It would eliminate the need for perfectly in-sync defensive lines.Teams would come up with all sorts of new approaches, some that we can't even picture. It almost certainly would not be good for the game, though.Offside is here to stay, and that's OK.More FIFA World Cup news:USA, England can't actually play on July 4thWhy Norway brought 600 pounds of salmon to the World CupEloy Room leads Curacao to astounding World Cup historyIt had to be Mo Salah for EgyptLamine Yamal outdoes Messi, Ronaldo in historic moment for Spanish wunderkind

Golf talk with Urban Meyer, Niemann-Gate and should pro golf ditch Long Island?
For 54 holes, Golf Twitter would have had you believing that the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock was one of the most boring major championships ever. Then, Sunday happened. We often forget that much of the good stuff doesn't happen until the final round, like Wyndham Clark nearly spoiling a six-stroke lead, the fans turning on him, Sam Burns making a serious push, etc. These majors are always building toward the back nine on Sunday, and the back nine on Sunday delivered at Shinnecock. That said, not everyone cared for the fan behavior, understandably so. It was downright uncomfortable even for those watching from home. Americans pulling that hard against an American is probably not something we will ever see again in our national championship, or any major for that matter. Then again, the PGA Championship is coming back to Long Island at Bethpage Black in 2033. Golfweek's Eamon Lynch, speaking on Golf Channel Monday morning, argued that the PGA should ditch Bethpage in 2033, and Long Island entirely, because their fans continue to prove that they are a "stain" on the game. Sheesh. Harsh? Or fair? We discuss that and much more on this week's episode of The Loop podcast. Plus, we chatted with the great Urban Meyer, who joined us live at Liberty National after the Liberty Cup. Please, have a listen below, and like and subscribe to The Loop wherever you find your podcasts:

SEC-Big Ten war is real, and Kentucky's new AD may just shift the power
Walk with me as we cross the line of could-be, and leap directly into the theater of the absurd. J Batt is your new athletic director at Kentucky. A rising star in the business of administration, and one of the top fundraisers in all of college sports. There’s a reason Hall of Fame Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo sounded despondent when speaking of the university losing both its president and athletic director in the same summer. Or as new Michigan State football coach Pat Fitzgerald told me in March: “J Batt is the real deal. A game-changer.”And this is where we jump into the deep end of the absurd, because frankly, we’ve been there in college sports for the past five years, anyway. Transformative moves: NFL sees NIL chaos — and smells a threat to its empire | OpinionDeep wounds: Brendan Sorsby drama ends, but not before tearing college football apartWhat if Batt, 44, who is close friends with legendary Alabama coach Nick Saban and was deputy athletic director in Tuscaloosa from 2017-22, could take the SEC deep inside the thinking of the Big Ten and its pursuit of becoming the biggest, baddest conference in all of college sports. You know, the title currently held — tenuously, at best — by the SEC. What do Big Ten presidents truly want with a proposed 24-team College Football Playoff, and where are the weak links or stress points in the pursuit? Is there a possibility for the SEC to work with the Big Ten — and not just on pushing back against federal intervention in college sports? Batt spent barely 12 months in East Lansing before returning to the SEC, and if you listen to Izzo, it’s clearly because of lasting and lingering dysfunction within the university that also led president Kevin Guskiewicz to leave for Clemson — while taking an $800,000 annual pay cut.Guskiewicz hired Batt away from Georgia Tech, in what was considered a coup for Michigan State. In one short year, Batt fired Jonathan Smith after two seasons as football coach, and hired Fitzgerald. Four days later, Batt announced an historic $401 million donation from a single donor that heavily benefits Spartan athletics. Translation: Batt isn’t just some figurehead, he’s a mover and shaker.Which brings us all the way back to the SEC/Big Ten rivalry. If you don’t think Batt knows exactly what’s going on inside the Big Ten’s future plans, you’re not following along. You better believe SEC commissioner Greg Sankey will spend time with Batt in the very near future, and do his best to deconstruct Batt’s Big Ten intel. No different than Big Ten presidents and commissioner Tony Petitti doing the same with Ross Bjork, who was hired as Ohio State’s athletic director in 2024 after spending the previous 12 years as athletic director at Ole Miss and Texas A&M.Or Sankey did with Trev Alberts when Texas A&M hired him away from Nebraska in 2024.It’s all part of the high stakes competition between the leagues. Who do you know, and what do you know? And can it be of value when you arrive in your new destination. “Any sort of prognostication is misguided right now,” Batt said of the future of college sports during his introductory news conference at Kentucky. “You’ve got to be strategic and smart.”He was speaking of Kentucky’s future. He may as well have been speaking of the SEC, too. It’s not as absurd as you’d think. Matt Hayes is the senior national college football writer for USA TODAY Sports Network.
