Many immigrants face deportation without a lawyer at their side in court. This program tries to help
People arrive for immigration court hearings in New York, Monday, July 27, 2026. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)2026-08-09T11:36:00Z SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Lawyer Kamalpreet Chohan ran her finger down a list of 57 names of people scheduled to appear during a morning of hearings at the immigration court in California’s capital and pointed out one glaring absence.“None of these folks are represented,” she said.Chohan is the coordinator of a program that sends volunteer lawyers to immigration courts to assist people without representation and help them navigate the complicated legal system where the stakes are a future in America or deportation.Appearing without a lawyer opens up even greater risk under the second Trump administration, with the courts playing a key role in its mass deportation agenda. Courts are increasingly denying asylum, deportation officers have arrested immigrants in court hallways, the administration has packed courtrooms to cut backlogs and reduced lead time on hearings, prompting people to miss them.Data shows that legal representation can be vital to winning in court but many immigrants, unable to pay for a private lawyer or find a pro bono one, navigate the system without an attorney at their side.“Folks go into immigration court not knowing what’s happening. They come out not knowing what’s happening. And when there’s an attorney present,” Chohan said, “it’s just so helpful.” Immigrants aren’t provided an attorney but legal help makes a differenceUnlike criminal court, there is no guaranteed lawyer in immigration courts.Immigrants have to hire one at a cost of thousands of dollars or hope to get represented by one of the nonprofit organizations assisting low-income immigrants. But waitlists with those organizations are long, and many parts of the country just do not have that many immigration attorneys. Of the roughly 3.2 million pending deportation cases currently in U.S. immigration courts, people in 52% of those cases do not have a lawyer, according to an analysis of immigration court data by the Vera Institute of Justice, a think tank.A Congressional Research Service study from 2024 found that only 19% of people who did not have a lawyer won asylum or another avenue to stay in the United States. Among those who did have a lawyer, 47% were successful. Read More “Having an attorney is just super critical to be able to navigate the system successfully,” said Adriel Orozco of the advocacy group American Immigration Council. Chohan said she frequently runs into people who have been scammed by lawyers or people posing as lawyers who take their money but do nothing for their case. Ever since, he said he has done everything that has been asked of him while he tries to make ends meet, occasionally painting houses. He spent $4,500 on a lawyer who in the end did nothing to help him, he said.“He turned out to be a scammer,” said the man, who did not want to be identified for fear of endangering his case. He is worried about what comes next in court after being warned by the judge that he could be deported. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said. A nonstop day of consulting with clients, shuttling back and forth into courtOutside the Sacramento building where the court is housed is a long line of immigrants waiting for appointments with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is in the same building. Volunteers with a local anti-ICE resistance group stand ready to help.Upstairs, two immigration judges are on the bench. One hears the in-depth individual cases of immigrants who are pursuing their claim of asylum. The other judge has the master calendar docket, where dozens of immigrants will appear in brief hearings geared at making sure their case is ready to go to the next step.Signs taped to the wall remind people not to videotape or record inside the court complex. A security guard makes sure no one loiters in the hallways. Most people clutch stacks of papers documenting their cases. After immigrants file into the courtroom for their hearings, Judge Susan Phan introduces Chohan and describes the services her organization offers.“You are not required to meet with her but it is a rare opportunity that we have someone volunteering their time,” Phan said before launching into the day’s work. The need for a detailed asylum applicationChohan, who works with the California Immigration Project, starts each hearing in the courtroom. She has a clipboard to take notes, extra copies of forms and a crate of books for restless children attending court with their parents. She spends the bulk of her time in the waiting room, talking to immigrants after their hearings and scanning their documents to flesh out what else they need.Speaking to one young man from Mexico, she asks to see his asylum application, noting that the judge had pointed out that it was not that detailed. “Sometimes judges can deny a claim if there isn’t enough detail,” she said through one of the organization’s volunteer translators. The organization frequently has clinics to help immigrants fill out their asylum application. Chohan said she will alert him to the next one.Another woman holding a stack of documents is there with her son and wanted to make sure her children could come with her if she is deported. Chohan also briefed her on what to expect at her upcoming asylum hearing and said the organization will send her an asylum filing guide.Chohan highlighted places on forms where people need to give answers or answer in more detail. It’s OK to write “none” but she advises them to not leave boxes blank.Everything submitted in Spanish must be accompanied by a translation into English that must be done by a person, not an automatic online translator. Copies of every single page of a passport must be submitted. Documents must be sent in two weeks before the applicant’s hearing so the judge can review them.Over and over, Chohan reminds immigrants to download their receipt showing they paid the $102 asylum application fee so they can submit it to the court. Chohan said a lot of these procedures and forms are discussed in court but it is happening so fast and immigrants are listening through a translator that they do not always understand what is happening.“A lot of times when they go into court, they’re just happy that they’re out of court and they’re not being arrested,” she said.A changing immigration court systemChohan has witnessed the upheaval in the immigration courts during Republican President Donald Trump’s second term. She was in the court hallways last summer when ICE officers waited to arrest immigrants after their hearings. Earlier this summer she watched as the administration started holding “mega masters,” hearings with dozens of respondents at a time that are meant to clear a backlog but have created chaos.Chohan said there are not enough pro bono lawyers in the Sacramento area to help everyone who needs one so the “Attorney of the Day” program is often the next best thing. She believes everyone should have access to a lawyer. Until that day, she said, the program “helps bridge that gap.” REBECCA SANTANA Santana reports on the Department of Homeland Security, immigration policy and the federal agencies that touch on immigration. Rashford returns to Man United with Old Trafford stay an option
Rashford returns to Man United with Old Trafford stay an optionMarcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United training at Carrington today with an increasing possibility that he remains at Old Trafford this summer.Rashford has returned to Manchester United after a season-long loan spell at Barcelona, where he scored 14 goals across all competitions. The 28-year-old has not featured for the Red Devils since December 2024, having been frozen out under former manager Ruben Amorim. He joined Aston Villa on loan in 2024/25 before another temporary stint in Spain.Following Barcelona’s decision to not sign Rashford permanently, his future has been up in the air. Despite approaches from Turkey and the Saudi Pro League, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Rashford has no intention of joining a club outside Europe’s major leagues. His wages are problematic for interested sides, with a 25% increase following Manchester United’s Champions League qualification taking his salary to around £300,000-a-week. As a result of the lack of credible suitors, Manchester United have ‘opened doors’ to the prospect of Rashford remaining with Michael Carrick content to keep the winger.Fantasy Premier League – 69 classic FPL team names to use ahead of 2026/27See Also – The biggest transfer fees ever paid for teenagers in football historyFollow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

Lukaku set to join Fenerbahce as Chelsea stand to benefit
Lukaku set to join Fenerbahce as Chelsea stand to benefitFenerbahce are closing in on a deal to sign Romelu Lukaku from Napoli, with the Belgian striker having agreed in principle to join the Turkish club.According to Gazzetta dello Sport, negotiations between Fenerbahce and Napoli are now in their final stages, with the transfer expected to be completed within the next 24 hours.Lukaku has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract worth €10 million, including bonuses, with Fenerbahce keen to add the experienced striker to their squad.Napoli are also prepared to sanction the 33-year-old’s departure, with the former Italian champions understood to need at least €10-12m from the transfer to avoid a capital loss.Fenerbahce close in on Lukaku deal with NapoliThe deal has an additional financial implication for Chelsea. Napoli agreed to pay the London club a 40 per cent sell-on share of any future transfer when they signed Lukaku in 2024.Gazzetta reports that Lukaku’s departure would also remove his €11m gross annual salary from Napoli’s wage bill, giving the Serie A side greater room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.Lukaku joined Napoli in 2024 and helped the club to the Serie A title that season. His proposed move to Fenerbahce would give him the opportunity to continue playing in the Champions League, with the Turkish club currently in the qualifying rounds. The striker’s agent Federico Pastorello is also expected to hold talks in Italy as the parties work towards completing the transfer.Fenerbahce’s move for Lukaku would give new manager Ismail Kartal another experienced attacking option as the Turkish club look to challenge for domestic honours and progress in Europe.Follow the Football Faithful on Social Media:Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | TikTok

How to spot the Perseid meteor shower, a summer light show that promises to dazzle
Ancient statues are seen during the Perseid meteor shower atop Mount Nemrut in southeastern Turkey, Sunday, Aug.11, 2024. (AP Photo/Emrah Gurel,File)2026-08-09T11:58:25Z NEW YORK (AP) — The Perseid summer light show is back — and viewing conditions are especially promising for the Northern Hemisphere. The meteor shower’s peak Wednesday night into Thursday morning coincides with a total solar eclipse across Spain, Iceland and Greenland and a six-planet parade — though the best time to view the fireballs will come after totality. As many as 50 to 100 meteors per hour may be visible under ideal conditions, according to NASA. The American Meteor Society estimates 30 to 50 meteors per hour could be seen from rural regions. Random meteors are visible in dark skies on any given night. Meteor showers tend to put on dazzling celestial shows and happen at predictable times every year when the Earth plows through trails of debris left behind by comets and, sometimes, asteroids. Those remnants collide with Earth’s atmosphere at extremely high speeds, producing streaks of light known as shooting stars. The Perseids are debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, an icy ball that orbits the sun every 133 years and isn’t scheduled for a return visit until 2125. Observations of this meteor shower date back over 2,000 years. The Perseids are a perennial favorite because they tend to produce brilliant fireballs. Summer temperatures also make this shower popular. “We don’t have to suffer through a cold winter night to get a good view of meteors,” said astronomer Zach Vanderbosch with McDonald Observatory in Texas. The moon will be in its new moon phase during the Perseids’ peak, making viewing conditions even better. Read More “The moon is beautiful, but it’s such a diva,” said astronomer Aparna Venkatesan with the University of San Francisco. “New moon means we don’t have moonlight flooding the sky, and you tend to see way more meteors as a result.”To spot the meteors, go outside after dark, away from clouds and city lights. Venkatesan plans to drive to the Sierra Nevada. The best views will be between midnight and dawn when the constellation Perseus is high in the northern sky. The meteors will appear to radiate from that constellation. Look up and give your eyes a half hour to adjust to the darkness. Vanderbosch recommends picking a patch of sky to focus on until a quick, bright streak passes by — even in your peripheral vision — and to avoid looking at your phone.“There’s just something magical about it,” Vanderbosch said.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Pakistan says new defense pact with Saudi and Turkey is ‘purely defensive’ and open to others
People watch fireworks in Lahore, Pakistan, Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, during celebrations of the signing a trilateral defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey in Mecca. (AP Photo/K.M. Chaudary)2026-08-09T12:15:08Z ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s foreign minister said Sunday a new defense agreement his country signed with Saudi Arabia and Turkey was not directed against any country and remained open to other nations in the region. The landmark Mecca Joint Defense Agreement was signed on Friday by the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the three countries seek to deepen security cooperation amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Sunday the agreement was “purely defensive in nature” and that other countries could join if they were willing to uphold its principles and resolve differences through peaceful means, adding the deal reflected a shared desire to strengthen strategic security cooperation. His post on X came a day after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan similarly said the agreement was not aimed at Iran or any other country. The agreement stipulates “that any armed attack against any one of the three states shall be regarded as an attack against them all,” according to statements released by the three sides. Dar said in his post the stipulation was consistent with the right of individual and collective self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter. Pakistan, he said, would continue working with countries across the region toward lasting peace and stability. “The Makkah Accord does not abrogate or replace any existing bilateral or multilateral agreements between these countries, or with other countries or organizations,” he wrote. Read More His comments followed overnight public celebrations of the agreement. Landmarks in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad and Saudi cities were illuminated in the colors of the Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani flags. The three countries bring significant but differing capabilities to the arrangement. Pakistan has extensive military experience and is the Muslim world’s only nuclear-armed country; Saudi Arabia brings substantial economic resources and regional influence; and NATO member Turkey has a large military and an increasingly sophisticated domestic defense industry. In Islamabad, defense analysts cautioned against viewing the agreement as the equivalent of NATO, despite its collective-defense provision. Abdullah Khan, an Islamabad-based defense analyst, said that although the agreement was signed during a period of heightened regional tensions, it should not be interpreted as being directed against Iran or another country. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have maintained close military ties for decades and signed a separate mutual-defense agreement in September 2025. Pakistan and Turkey also have expanded military and defense-industrial cooperation in recent years

No Ebola cases found on quarantined river boat, Congo authorities say
Wiza Bondele, a health worker on the prevention and control team, poses for a photograph in Ituri province, eastern Congo, Wednesday, Aug 5, 2026. (AP Photo/Dieudonne Dirole)2026-08-09T12:00:06Z KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — No cases of Ebola have been detected among passengers on a river boat that was placed in quarantine near Kinshasa, health authorities have said. The confirmation announced on Saturday eased concerns that the rare Bundibugyo virus might spread to the Congolese capital.More than 200 boat passengers were placed in quarantine on Thursday in the port of Maluku, 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Kinshasa, after one traveler who was previously aboard the boat died with symptoms matching the Ebola virus.Specialist teams from the Ministry of Health were deployed to Maluku to examine all of those on board. Those exhibiting suspicious symptoms had samples taken and sent to a laboratory for analysis, the ministry said on Saturday, adding that the vessel was also decontaminated. The National Institute of Biomedical Research, which is responsible for testing, said that all suspected cases tested negative for Bundibugyo. It urged the population of Kinshasa to remain calm. Congo has been battling an Ebola outbreak that has been deemed the fastest in history in terms of transmission, with confirmed cases since it started in May reaching 4,200, including over 1,900 deaths. The river boat passenger had become sick and disembarked nearly three weeks ago in Pimu, in the province of Mongala, more than 1,000 kilometers from Kinshasa along the Congo River, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said on Thursday. The capital has no confirmed Ebola case, he added. News of the passenger’s death caused panic in Kinshasa, which is far from the eastern region hit by the outbreak, the second-largest outbreak on record, behind the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak that recorded more than 28,000 cases, including over 11,000 deaths. Read More Ebola is highly contagious and spreads through contact with bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen, and with contaminated surfaces and materials such as bedding and clothing.Health authorities say between 60% and 70% of new cases in the current outbreak are recorded outside of contacts being monitored, and that the outbreak is spreading at an “alarming” rate faster than efforts to track it. The medical charity Doctors Without Borders said this week that the outbreak is still “spreading at an alarming and unprecedented rate” and that the response, which has been expanding, “is still not reaching communities quickly enough to break transmission chains.”

Braden Fiske on Myles Garrett: Not all men are created equal
Myles Garrett missed some time at Rams training camp due to lower body soreness, but he's been back on the field in recent days and it sounds like he's in fine form. Defensive lineman Braden Fiske will be lining up on the same front as Garrett and it has not taken long for him to come to the conclusion that the two-time defensive player of the year moves differently than most players. Fiske said the key for the team is now to integrate Garrett into a group that also includes Kobie Turner and Byron Young. "Not all men are created equal, that's for sure," Fiske said, via the team's website. "He's a baller, no doubt. He's getting a slide, there's no doubt about that. Trying to work off him or vice versa, communicating. The biggest thing right now is working on our communication of how to rush together, how we're going to attack certain looks. As all four, the certain looks that we're going to get when he's on the field, preparing for that and doing our best to work off each other. It's been good so far though. I think we're making strides."The defensive front could welcome another big piece in the near future. Aaron Donald is expected to make a decision on coming back soon and the Rams will have to do a little more recalibrating for another player who would fit Fiske's feelings about the equality of defensive linemen.

Del Piero gives advice to Juventus, Kolo Muani and Alajbegovic: ‘Not too much pressure’
Del Piero gives advice to Juventus, Kolo Muani and Alajbegovic: ‘Not too much pressure’Alessandro Del Piero says that he is excited by what he has seen so far from Juventus and their work under Luciano Spalletti during the off-season, but has urged supporters not to put too much pressure on new boy Kerim Alajbegovic: ‘I’m sure Spalletti will know how to manage him’.Del Piero sat down to talk all things Juventus in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.Del Piero talks Juventus, Spalletti, Kolo Muani and AlajbegovicDel Piero has been in Australia as part of Juventus’s pre-season tour over the last week. The Bianconeri legend spent two years with Sydney FC between 2012 and 2014 towards the end of his career and says that ‘it is very pleasant’ to be back down under.“I have great memories of that experience, they welcomed me and my family so well. It wasn’t easy at the beginning, but then we adapted, also thanks to this large Italian community that helps with integration. The food, the weather, all the sights, it was really amazing.“It’s always exciting to come back and meet our emigrants and second-generation compatriots. It’s a special feeling.”The discussion then switched back to Juventus and what Del Piero expects from Luciano Spalletti’s side compared to last season.“There’s continuity compared to last year, both in terms of the squad and the coaching staff. The summer is an important but difficult period because you need to show the fuel that you will require during the season, but with so much travelling, it’s hard to train at the top level. The thing I hope most is that Juventus acts like a team, that’s it.”What does Del Piero make of Juve’s new recruits, Randal Kolo Muani and Kerim Alajbegovic?PERTH, AUSTRALIA – AUGUST 08: Kerim Alajbegovic of Juventus makes a run makes a during the match between Juventus and FC Internazionale at Optus Stadium on August 08, 2026 in Perth, Australia. (Photo by James Worsfold/Getty Images)“Kolo Muani did well during the period he already had with Juve. And I notice that he was welcomed back with a lot of enthusiasm, so that’s good.“The investment on Alajbegovic, on the other hand, makes me particularly happy. First of all because we’re talking about an exciting young talent who has a lot of potential. It’s also nice that such a highly-rated young lad has chosen the Italian division to develop. We’re getting used to them being stolen away from us.“Now, let’s not load him up with too much pressure. Let’s give him the time to grow and adapt. I’m sure that Spalletti will know how to manage him in this sense.”Del Piero is putting a lot of confidence in Spalletti this summer.HONG KONG, CHINA – AUGUST 5: Head coach Luciano Spalletti of Juventus FC talks to media during post match press conference after the preseason friendly between Chelsea and Juventus at the Kai Tak Stadium on August 5, 2026 in Hong Kong, China. (Photo by Yu Chun Christopher Wong/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images)“He doesn’t need my trust, though, nor the trust of anyone else because he has a great CV,. That’s not the big thing,” Del Piero insisted. When asked to follow up on that, he responded: “It’s about finding the right balance for the team. Juventus performed well in lots of games last season. Now they have to improve on consistency. The players are all saying that they’re happy to be going into the season with him, so the prospects seem good to me.”And what about Juve’s chances in the Europa League this season?“I’m sure Juventus will play to their fullest given that it’s a prestigious competition and a European showcase,” Del Piero said.BERGAMO, ITALY – DECEMBER 10: Former football player Alessandro Del Piero looks on prior to the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD6 match between Atalanta BC and Real Madrid C.F. at Stadio di Bergamo on December 10, 2024 in Bergamo, Italy. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)Lastly, Del Piero was asked if he will ever return to Juventus in a directorship or managerial capacity.“I’ve been asked this question a thousand times and I only ever answer like this: Only God knows what will happen.“For the moment, I’m enjoying this role that the club has asked me to do, because as a ‘legend’, I’m still in contact with lots of different people. My bond with Juventus and its colours goes far beyond the job I have.”

Warren Brinson, Packers D-line win Family Night: 'I want to dominate'
The Green Bay Packers are set to be without the jewel of their defensive line, Micah Parsons, for at least a chunk of the season, leading to justifiable concern over the ability of Green Bay’s front to hold up in his absence. If Friday’s Family Night practice at Lambeau Field is any indication, it appears a young group of defensive linemen is ready to step up.Second-year defensive tackle Warren Brinson quietly had one of the better performances of the night, particularly in the team portion of practice.Brinson was consistently disruptive with both the first and second team defense, getting into the backfield using various moves including a quick arm-over and a forklift. O-linemen Jacob Monk and Donovan Jennings found him especially hard to contain. He also showed some burst to get upfield quickly off the snap, forcing Jordan Love to step up and potentially into a sack, with Karl Brooks looking to clean up.The former sixth-round pick found the run game more of a challenge as a rookie, and there were still some moments of struggle in that regard on Friday night, but his impact as a pass rusher is notable. With a 12.3% pass rush win rate as a rookie, Brinson ranked 18th among 121 eligible defensive tackles, level with Byron Murphy II and Christian Barmore. With more of a rotational role likely in the cards in 2026, he could be a valuable part of Green Bay’s pass rush off the bench. After practice, Brinson told the media: “My goal is to go out there and just dominate, honestly. My coach always tells me I can be as good as I want to be, so I was just trying to prove it."Brinson also said he took Muay Thai and boxing classes in the offseason to work on his hand-to-hand combat skills. He continued: “I’m determined to be the player I need to be for the defense. I want to dominate, I want to go out there and be the best pass rusher on the team. When it’s time to call game I wanna be on the field, that’s what I was trying to prove out there today."On the edge, Lukas Van Ness and Barryn Sorrell were bright, with the latter making several plays in the run game, which was his strongest facet as a rookie.Speaking of rookies, Dani Dennis-Sutton showed why many experts thought he should have been drafted much earlier than the fourth-round.He had a couple of wins on the edge, including one using his patented spin move, and also beat Jager Burton on the inside, following up the regular pressure he had been generating from the interior in training camp.Green Bay’s front is off to a promising start as they look to inspire confidence they can get by without Parsons early in the year. This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: Warren Brinson, Packers D-line win Family Night: 'I want to dominate'

Kyle Shanahan is fully aware of the Mike Evans injury risk
Veteran receiver Mike Evans missed nine games last year due to injury. On Saturday, the coach of his new team was asked about the expectations for the 33-year-old receiver in his 13th season.“Yeah, it depends if he stays healthy," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters about Evans. "Mike to me is always, if you’re a starting receiver, you’re out there a ton which everyone is. I forget what it was last year, maybe hamstring, where he missed time and when that happens you miss games. "But Mike’s going to be a starting receiver here and we don’t like any of our guys to go every play. We want our guys going full speed and it’s hard to go full speed every play. So, we’re always going to spell guys. But hopefully, he’s got a little quad right now, which I know Mike probably believes he could be back right now. We’re being smart with him, but he’s going to be good to go.”The hamstring has been an issue on multiple occasions in recent years. It didn't interrupt Evans's string of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons, until last year. The 49ers will need him to be on the field as much as possible, given that he's their best option at the position. Before they'll have him on the field for games, they need him back at practice. He's been gone for nearly a week.

Vlahovic ready to listen to Besiktas €10m per season proposalDusan Vlahovic is starting to realise he won’t receive the offers he wants from Serie A, the Premier League or LaLiga, so is reportedly ready to listen to Vincenzo Italiano’s Besiktas. The former Juventus striker has been a free agent since his contract in Turin was allowed to run down on June 30.LECCE, ITALY – MAY 09: Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus FC during the Serie A match between US Lecce and Juventus FC at Stadio Via del Mare on May 09, 2026 in Lecce, Italy. (Photo by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images)There was also the possibility of a return to Juve on a lower salary than the €12m per season he was on, but they too appear to have moved on with Randal Kolo Muani and Kerim Alajbegovic coming in.According to Calciomercato, Sportitalia and TRT Spor, Vlahovic is finally ready to listen to the offer from Besiktas and give negotiations some serious thought. It would be a €10m per season salary, plus a large signing-on bonus and commission for his agent. In turn, Besiktas warned that they will not wait beyond the end of next week, but have been calling Vlahovic practically every day to convince him. They believe coach Vincenzo Italiano, who worked with the striker at Fiorentina during his most positive spell, can be a decisive factor.

What Alabama State football QB Andrew Body said about running in 2026
When Alabama State football quarterback, Andrew Body, injured his throwing shoulder for the third time in his career in 2025 — the question about how much he'd run in 2026 started generating buzz. Body was the second leading rusher for Alabama State last season with 518 rushing yards. Running the football has always been a component of Body's game, but it's also been the cause for two of his shoulder injuries. The Hornets are carrying big expectations into 2026 after being voted in the preseason to finish first in the SWAC East, and even bigger expectations are on Body after he was named to the Walter Peyton Award watchlist. So how much will Body run this season? "At the end of the day, I got to be me because that's all you can be," Body told the Montgomery Advertiser after Alabama State's scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 8. "You can't try to be somebody, or try to be someone else." The evidence to Body's statement might've been seen in the Hornet's scrimmage when Body ran the ball five times over the course of four drives — three of which were designed QB runs. ASU FB SCRIMMAGE NOTES: Observations during Alabama State football's first fall camp scrimmageTONY HULL & ASU FB OFFENSE: How new OC Tony Hull approached building Alabama State football's offenseBody isn't content with the season he had in 2025, and part of his evolution this season has to do with running the football. "That's the difference between being a running quarterback, and a quarterback that can run," Body said. "Instead of just running the ball to try to make a play, you're running it when you need to." The Alabama State QB is learning how to be a smart runner this season, but holding true to who is. If the Hornets want to find the offensive success they had last season, they'll need Body to be healthy and able to run when needed. West Indies suffer major ODI World Cup blow, miss direct qualification for 2027 showpiece
Two-time champions West Indies have missed out on direct qualification for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027, meaning the former powerhouse will once again have to navigate the qualifiers to reach the 50-over showpiece.West Indies’ fate was sealed after Afghanistan defeated Ireland by 92 runs in the rain-affected second ODI of their five-match series at Bready Cricket Club on Friday. The result guaranteed Afghanistan a direct place at the 2027 World Cup and left West Indies unable to break into the direct qualification places before the September 30, 2026 cut-off.The 2027 tournament will be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November, with matches spread across 12 venues.Third straight World Cup without direct entryThe setback extends a worrying trend for West Indies cricket. The two-time champions also failed to secure direct qualification for the 2019 and 2023 editions. They successfully came through the qualifiers in 2019, but suffered a stunning setback four years later when they were eliminated in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers and missed the main tournament in India. The West Indies will now have to go through the qualification route once again if they are to feature in the 2027 edition.Under the qualification system, co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have automatic places. The remaining seven direct spots are determined by the ICC ODI rankings, with the rankings cut-off set for September 30, 2026.West Indies are currently 10th in the ODI rankings, behind Afghanistan in eighth and Bangladesh in ninth. Zimbabwe, ranked 11th, already have an automatic place as co-hosts.That effectively means West Indies cannot move into the required top-nine bracket before the deadline.India series cannot change West Indies' fateWest Indies will have one final major ODI assignment before the cut-off when they travel to India for a three-match series in September and October. The first two games are scheduled for Thiruvananthapuram on September 27 and Guwahati on September 30.However, even winning both matches will not be enough to take West Indies into the direct qualification places, leaving their World Cup fate dependent on the qualifiers. For a side that once dominated the global 50-over game, another qualification campaign represents a stark reminder of the distance West Indies cricket has travelled from its former heights.Ireland also forced into qualifiersIreland have also lost their direct qualification opportunity. The Irish side needed to sweep their five-match series against Afghanistan 5-0 to remain in contention. Their hopes suffered an immediate blow when the opening ODI in Bready was washed out on August 5, before Afghanistan's 92-run victory in the second game effectively ended Ireland's hopes. With Afghanistan now assured of a direct World Cup place, West Indies and Ireland will have to take the longer route to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. 133064801

Manchester City 3 Atletico Madrid 1: Thoughts and observations from City’s final preseason friendly
Manchester City 3 Atletico Madrid 1: Thoughts and observations from City’s final preseason friendlyManchester City 3 (Omar Marmoush 57′, 59′, Rayan Ait-Nouri 90′)Atletico Madrid 1 (Jorge Domínguez 43′)Manchester City have concluded their preseason tour of Asia with a 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Young right-back Jorge Domínguez gave Atletico Madrid just before halftime. However, a brace from Omar Marmoush and a late Rayan Ait-Nouri goal saw Enzo Maresca’s side pick up a comfortable victory.Enzo Maresca fielded a strong starting eleven for today’s match. Maresca got a good look at the senior players in his squad before making a raft of substitutions for the sceond half. All told, Maresca gave his senior players more minutes as he ramped up his preparations for the 2026-27 season in Seoul.First half thoughts observations.Outside of a poor back pass from the Atletico Madrid defence which saw Tijjani Reijnders force a save from the oncoming Jan Oblak in the Atletico goal in the second minute, the opening five passed by rather innocuously. Atletico Madrid enjoyed a spell of possession in the game’s first five minutes. Enzo Maresca’s side was looking good on the counter which led to Manchester City’s first real opening of the match in the seventh minute.Manchester City won possession in midfield and Tijjani Reijnders made a surging run at the backpeddling Atletico Madrid defence. Reijnders worked himself into a position to shoot but his left-footed shot was well blocked by the Atletico defence. The rebound fell to Phil Foden who saw a right-footed shot from a great position blocked once again. Two minutes later, Savinho made a driving run from the right. The Brazilian winger beat Atletico Madrid’s left-back Dani Martinez with some neat footwork to work himself into a great position to shoot. However, Savinho’s shot lacked power and Jan Oblak saved with ease.Manchester City were having joy attacking down their right wing. Savinho in particular was looking especially dangerous. What did stand out was that Matheus Nunes wasn’t making a forward run once he played the ball to Savinho. This allowed Savinho the opportunity to drive at the Atletico Madrid throughout the game’s opening 15 minutes. It will be interesting to see if that is trend that Enzo Maresca sticks with throughout the 2026-27 season to allow his wingers to have space to operate in.Josko Gvardiol heads a great chance wide from a Phil Foden corner.Manchester City perhaps should have taken the lead in the 19th minute from a corner. Phil Foden floated in a dangerous corner from the right to the back post. Josko Gvardiol headed the chance wide with Jan Oblak in man’s land. Atletico Madrid defender Dani Martinez did a good job to crowd Gvardiol out, but you did feel that Gvardiol should have done better with his header.Just before the first half hydration break, Savinho fired a shot just wide of the far post. Tijjani Reijnders attempted to play a ball in behind the Atletico Madrid defence. Reijnders’ ball wasn’t dealt with by Dani Martinez, and his attempted clearance only succeeded in playing in Savinho in behind. The Brazilian winger cut inside and unleashed a powerful strike at goal. However, Savinho’s shot went wide of the far post with Jan Oblak scrambling.Manchester City were having joy down both flanks in the games opening half-hour. Antoine Semenyo and Savinho were by far and away Manchester City’s most dangerous attacking threat. Watching the pair attack the Atletico full-backs and put in balls to the back post, it was easy to picture Erling Haaland enjoying the service on offer when the 2026-27 season begins.Antoine Semenyo and Savinho create openings but no City player was on hand to open the scoring.Manchester City created three great openings from both flanks between the 35th and 37th minutes. First, Antoine Semenyo made a surging run from midfield and worked himself into a great position to cross from the left. Semenyo played in a great low cross which the Atletico Madrid defence cleared away before Omar Marmoush could tap in. Savinho had his turn to beat the Atletico Madrid left-back and put in a teasing cross across the six-yard box from the byline, but no City player was on hand for a tap-in. The Brazilian international tried it again in the 37th minute and played in another teasing low cross that the Atletico Madrid cleared away before any Manchester City attacker could get on the end of it to open the scoring.Jorge Domínguez gives Atletico Madrid the lead after City fail to deal with a corner.Atletico Madrid took the lead in the 43rd minute through 16-year-old right-back Jorge Domínguez. Diego Simeone’s side floated in a corner that was only cleared to the edge of their own area by the Manchester City defence. The ball was put back into the City area by Atletico and Ruben Dias made a mess of a clearance, and the ball fell to Jorge Domínguez in a great position just outside the six-yard box. Domínguez beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a composed right-footed finish after being played on by Josko Gvardiol. Perhaps the goal was harsh on Manchester City but they should have dealt with the corner in a much better fashion. After Ademola Lookman fired over under pressure from Vitor Reis and Antoine Semenyo made two impressive runs and fired a shot wide, the halftime whistle blew. Diego Simeone’s side would take a 1-0 lead into the interval. From a Manchester City point of view, the way that Semenyo and Savinho attacked from the wings was particularly impressive. Seeing Matheus Nunes not make any attacking runs from the right-back position was interesting. This tactic allowed Savinho the space he needed to attack on the right. However, Enzo Maresca will not be happy with the manner in which Atletico took the lead. All told, Manchester City were impressive in the first half and perhaps with a proper striker on the pitch, they would have capitalized on the chances that Savinho and Semenyo created.Second half thoughts and observations.Rico Lewis replaced Vitor Reis at halftime, in the only substitution made by Enzo Maresca. Atletico Madrid didn’t make any substitutions at halftime, as both managers wanted to take a better look at the players who started the match. Josko Gvardiol moved to centre-back as Rico Lewis slotted in at left-back.Atletico Madrid would have the first chance of the second half. Mateo Kovacic lost possession deep in his own half, which allowed Atletico the opportunity to break. The ball was played to Obed Vargas, who was in a great position to shoot. However, Vargas’ shot was partly blocked, which took all the sting out of the shot and Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the ball with ease. However, the way Mateo Kovacic lost possession wasn’t what Manchester City wanted to see.Omar Marmoush equalizes for Manchester City after some magic from Antoine Semenyo.Manchester City would make it 1-1 in the 57th minute. Omar Marmoush scored the goal but came after a piece of magic from Antoine Semenyo. Mateo Kovacic played a ball to Semenyo on the left wing. The ball was behind Semenyo and appeared destined to go out for an Atletico throw-in. However, Semenyo acrobatically kept the ball in play and surged to the byline on the left wing. He played a teasing low ball across the six-yard box for Omar Marmoush to tap in from close range.Semenyo does it again to set Omar Marmoush up for another tap-in to give City the lead.Enzo Maresca’s side would take the lead two minutes after equalising. Once again, Antoine Semenyo created the goal from the left wing. The Ghana international got in behind the Atletico defence and got the end of a quality through ball. Semenyo again played a good ball into the penalty area for Marmoush to score his second goal of the match. It did seem that Antoine Semenyo was offside but with no VAR in use, and the linesman keeping his flag down, the goal stood. In the 64th minute Diego Simeone would make ten substitutions. The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for local hero Lee Kang-In when he took to the pitch for Atletico Madrid.Arnau Ortiz would head a good chance straight at Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 71st minute. The chance came from a cross from the left wing after the ball was over the top of Manchester City, creating an opening for Atletico Madrid.Atletico Madrid were having the better of the game as the game ticked into the 76th minute. Lee Kang-In fired a good chance over the bar from eight yards after some neat work on the left by Atletico Madrid. A good picked out Lee Kang-In who fired his shot high and wide.Rico Lewis would play in Divin Mubama with a ball over the top of the Atletico Madrid defence in the 77th minute. Mubama was onside and in space and got into a great position to shoot. Mubama hit a strong left-footed strike from close range on goal that Atletico Madrid’s substitute goalkeeper Salvi Esquivel saved well with his feet.Matheus Nunes would see a 25-yard rocket batted away by Salvi Esquivel in the 85th minute. Phil Foden played a from the left to the right which found Matheus Nunes with space to shoot. The Portuguese international obliged and fired a rocket at goal that Esquivel punched away. After squandering a gilt-edged chance, Rayan Ait-Nouri seals the win for Enzo Maresca’s side.Rayan Ait-Nouri should have made it 3-1 to Manchester City in the 89th minute. Claudio Echeverri was played in behind on the right and he squared the all to Ait-Nouri who was in acres of space through on goal. However, Ait-Nouri’s touch was poor and Salvi Esquivel gathered the ball. The Atletico Madrid keeper tried to set his team away on the counter with a quick throw but Divin Mubama won possession near the halfway line. Mubama played in Rayan Ait-Nouri who was onside and he beat Esquivel with a calm left-footed shot to seal victory for Manchester City. The remainder of the match played out without incident and Enzo Maresca’s side picked up a 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.Second half thoughts and observations.Antoine Semenyo was the star of the second half. His two assists were utterly superb and he looks to have laid down a marker for the 2026-27 season during City’s preseason tour of Asia. It was pleasing to see Omar Marmoush bag a brace and get into the positions he needed to be to profit in the second half.Enzo Maresca’s system is becoming clearer. The wingers are crucial to how City play and that has been impossible to ignore in all three friendlies that Manchester City have played. It stood out more today. Out of possession, City look stable and their ability to win the ball back quickly could be vital for them this season.Today’s victory over Atletico Madrid caps off a good preseason tour for Manchester City. They will now return to Manchester to begin working towards their FA Community Shield clash with Arsenal in a week’s time.Manchester City player impressions.Gianluigi Donnarumma- A quiet gane for Donnarumma who could very little about Atletico Madrid’s goal.Matheus Nunes- Nunes played well and showed against how important he is for his team. Vitor Reis- The Brazilian defender was the only City player taken off at halftime. I thought he was again composed in possession and defended well when required. His first half display capped off a promising preseason tour for Vitor Reis. Ruben Dias- Dias will be better after getting through 90 minutes and it was his error that led to Atletico’s goal. Josko Gvardiol- Gvardiol was better at centre-back rather than left-back and the fact that he played 90 minutes is a major positive. Mateo Kovacic- Kovacic was tidy in midfield however the one time he lost possession in his own half was his only blemish. Tijjani Reijnders- Reijnders had some moments early in the match before he drifted out of the game.Phil Foden- That was probably Foden’s best performance of City’s preseason tour. He wasn’t dazzling but his ability to dictate the tempo of the match was impressive. Antoine Semenyo- Semenyo was brilliant once again. He grabbed two assists and looks primed for a big season. Savinho- Another good performance from Savinho. He was a constant threat on the right wing throughout the match. Savinho has shown he could play a role for City if he doesn’t depart the club before the transfer window closes.Omar Marmoush- Marmoush was anonymous in the first half. However he got in the right positions in the second half to bag a brace which should do his confidence the world of good.Substitutes.Rico Lewis- Lewis slotted in at left-back and inverted into midfield as he does. He played well and showed what he can offer Enzo Maresca this season throughout City’s tour of Asia.Nico Gonzalez- Nico wasn’t spectacular but his team does look better with him at the heart of their midfield.Divin Mubama- Mubama grabbed an assist and he has shown his worth with two goals and an assist in three matches.Rayan Ait-Nouri- Ait-Nouri grabbed a late goal and you do wonder if he will play on a wing this season rather than at left-back.Claudio Echeverri- A lively late cameo from Echeverri. He’s a serious talent so hopefully his 2026-27 season is more productive than his 2025-26 campaign.

GOP reps lob outing threats, MI ends conversion therapy ban & Dem apologizes for anti-trans stance
Trump administration created secret, rigged trials to kick trans people out of the military A defense lawyer astonished: “Going in, I had hoped I was paranoid, and boards’ outcomes were not predetermined. It turned out to be much worse than I thought,” said Army Reserve lawyer Priya Rashid. Why it matters: The military entered new territory when it started kicking out people who were previously allowed in, all because of their identities. Moreno, who is not out and is married to a woman, was linked to a gay dating app account several years ago. Why it matters: One Republican threatening to out another as punishment for not supporting his reelection campaign shows how powerful homophobia is in politics. Did Rep. Max Miller threaten to out GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno as gay on CNN? Michigan becomes the first state to end its conversion therapy ban Why it’s over: Michigan was one of 27 states that ban licensed mental health professionals from practicing conversion therapy on minors, but the Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that such bans may violate the free speech rights of therapists. A federal court ruled against Michigan’s ban. Why it matters: This is probably the end of these sorts of laws. The administration also said the change was prompted by a need for compliance with the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) of 1995. Somehow, it’s only trans students whose safety isn’t worth the paperwork. 2026-08-09T12:57:42Z LONDON (AP) — The alleged leader of an Irish organized crime gang is on his way back to Ireland from Dubai to face charges that he ran an international drug smuggling and money laundering empire with tentacles that stretched to Britain, Spain and the U.S.An Irish military plane carrying Daniel Kinahan, 49, is expected to land on Sunday evening at an airport outside of Dublin after a court in Dubai refused to block his extradition, Irish media reported.Kinahan is expected to be taken directly to the Special Criminal Court in Dublin where he will face charges of directing an organized crime group, Irish broadcaster RTE reported. He will then be held at the high-security Portlaoise Prison about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southwest of the capital.Irish media say a huge security operation is underway to ensure Kinahan faces justice. It will included armed police, members of the armed forces and the prison service — which recently acquired a bomb-proof escort van to transport organized crime suspects, terrorists and other high-risk prisoners, Irish broadcaster RTE reported.

Litchfield helps Sunrisers boost knockout hopes
The Hundred women's competition, HeadingleyWelsh Fire 121-8 (100 balls): Kemp 72* (45); Sharma 3-13Sunrisers Leeds 122-4 (74 balls): Litchfield 55 (25); Smale 2-23Sunrisers Leeds won six wicketsScorecard. TableSunrisers Leeds kept their hopes of making The Hundred knockout phase alive with a six-wicket win over Welsh Fire, which simultaneously eliminated their opponents.Set 122 for victory, Sunrisers opener Phoebe Litchfield delivered a stellar knock in the must-win encounter as she made a superb 55 off 25 balls to break the back of the chase. Her side remain fourth in the standings but moved on to 16 points - two behind third-placed Manchester Super Giants. The Super Giants host Sunrisers at Old Trafford on Tuesday with the victor progressing to the Eliminator. However, Fire's bid to finish in the top three was extinguished by the result, with one match of their group stage campaign left.Litchfield hit shots all round the 360 - cutting, pulling, driving and ramping a Fire attack which struggled to contain the Australian's skill and aggression. The opening batter's knock featured six fours and three sixes and when she was eventually dismissed - caught via a leading edge off Georgia Wareham's bowling - Sunrisers required 31 off 48 balls.Annabel Sutherland's 28 off 18 balls had Sunrisers within striking distance, before Dani Gibson and Jess Jonassen got them over the line with a mammoth 26 balls remaining."Our team is gaining momentum and things are starting to fall into place," said Litchfield, who was named the player of the match. "I've just walked out and tried to keep it simple by watching the ball. Our bowlers set things up and I've had the freedom to play pressure free."Earlier, Fire had been restricted to 121-8 after a disciplined bowling performance by the Sunrisers.Deepti Sharma was the pick of the home side's attack with 3-13, while fellow spinner Hannah Baker took 2-15.That Fire were able to post anything like a competitive target was largely due to an aggressive knock from Freya Kemp. The England all-rounder used her leavers to good effect as she whacked an unbeaten 72 off 45 balls, including six fours and three sixes. There was an element of fortune, though, as Kemp benefited from some poor fielding from the Sunrisers. She was dropped three times - twice by Sutherland and once by Cassidy McCarthy - as only she and Georgia Voll, with 16 off 18 balls, made double figures for Fire. What else is happening on Sunday? In the men's competition, Sunrisers and Fire remain in the hunt for the finals and face each other at 14:30 BST.Elsewhere, London Spirit welcome Birmingham Phoenix to Lord's, with the women's game at 14:30, and the men's at 18:00.You can follow ball-by-ball commentary on all four matches on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, BBC Sounds and the BBC Sport website and app.The women's and men's matches between Spirit and Phoenix will be shown live on BBC Two and via iPlayer with coverage starting at 14:15.The Hundred: Who needs what to progress from group stages? All our Hundred Who Am I? quizzes in one placeThe Hundred 2026 tables, top run-scorers & wicket-takers

Josh Downs missed Saturday's Colts practice with a groin injury
The Colts have not had Alec Pierce on the practice field at all this summer and they were missing another wideout at practice on Saturday. Josh Downs did not take part in the session and the Colts said that he is dealing with a groin injury. They did not offer further information about the extent of the injury or how long Downs might be out of action. Pierce is on the physically unable to perform list after having ankle surgery this offseason and head coach Shane Steichen said earlier this week that there's no timetable for his return. Ashton Dulin, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and Anthony Gould worked as the first team wideouts for the Colts on Saturday.

Red Sox latest winning streak ends at 9 games with 7-3 loss to Athletics
The Boston Red Sox almost did it again. Two nights after rallying from behind five times to defeat the Chicago White Sox in 13 innings, Boston was down by four runs to the Athletics going into the bottom of the ninth with their nine-game winning streak at stake. Facing A’s closer Hogan Harris, Jahmai Jones hit a one-out double. But Harris then struck out Ceddanne Rafaela, getting him to chase a fastball that darted inside way out of the strike zone. Caleb Durbin kept the inning alive for the Red Sox, hitting a middle-middle slider for a single to drive in Jones. Was it happening again? Willson Contreras followed up with a single as Harris again left a pitch in the middle of the zone. Perhaps trying to overcompensate, the A’s closer then stayed largely out of the zone but walked Andruw Monasterio as a result.Bases loaded with two outs. A base hit by new addition Eli White could trim the deficit. An extra-base knock might even tie the score. And if White hit a home run, the magic would continue for the Red Sox.However, the mystic fortune couldn’t push Boston over the hump on Saturday night. Harris once again threw a fastball right down the middle of the zone and White drove it to center field, briefly giving a jolt to the fans at Fenway Park. But the fly ball fell a few feet short of the warning track and Henry Bolte caught it for the final out. The Red Sox’s latest winning streak ended at nine games. But Boston is still the hottest baseball team on the planet, winning 27 of their past 31 games. A’s starter Gage Jump was sensational, racking up 11 strikeouts in 6 innings while allowing 2 runs and 3 hits. Bolte and Tyler Soderstrom each hit home runs off Red Sox reliever Raymond Burgos. Boston starter Jake Bennett gave up 4 runs, 5 hits and 3 walks in his 5 1/3 innings. He’s allowed 3 or more runs in four consecutive starts. Curiously, the Athletics have given the Red Sox their only two losses during their past 13 games. Jump won the July 28 matchup as well, pitching 6 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts. And Bennett also took a loss for Boston. The Red Sox will attempt to get the win train back on track on Sunday by starting trade deadline addition Erik Miller in a bullpen game. Miller, a left-handed reliever, was acquired from the San Francisco Giants on Monday in a surprising deal for former shortstop prospect Marcelo Mayer.

Dowdle or Warren RB1? Steelers keeping plans close to the vest
This article originally appeared on SteelersNOW.com.The Pittsburgh Steelers running back position in 2026 will almost certainly be dominated by a combination of returning starter Jaylen Warren and 1,000-yard free agent addition Rico Dowdle. But how exactly the starts, playing time and touches will be distributed between the backs still feels very much up in the air as we enter the third week of training camp. Both backs started for their teams last year, with Warren starting 16 games for the Steelers and Dowdle making 11 starts for the Carolina Panthers. Both backs led their team in rushing: Warren had 958 in 16 games for the Steelers and Dowdle rushed for 1,076 yards in 17 games in Carolina.
