And this time, unlike last week against defending WNBA champion Las Vegas, they didn’t allow a double-digit lead to slip away.Mitchell was 11 of 16 from the field and she, like Clark and Sophie Cunningham, each made four 3s on a night Indiana finished with 16 on 25 attempts. Cunningham had 12 points, and Aliyah Boston added 19 points and seven rebounds. Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu each had 19 points for the Liberty. Jonquel Jones finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.Indiana took control with a 15-7 run late in the second quarter, extending the lead to 54-37. When Indiana’s 3s stopped falling in the third quarter, New York charged back quickly and cut the deficit to 66-57 with 6:51 to play. (Photo by Gus Stark/LSU/University Images via Getty Images) Today was the first day of full pads, and the media was allowed to view the usual three periods, which is about 12–15 minutes.During that session, I spent time hitting each position group, but the groups I spent the most time with were the edges, offensive line, QBs, and skill positions.Let’s start with the DBs and linebackers. Faheem Delane was still working with the first unit at the safety position. He looked really good in the limited amount of time I was able to view him. They were primarily focusing on alignment, depth, and having good eye discipline.As for the linebackers, TJ Dottery and Whit Weeks were TJ Dottery and Whit Weeks. Nothing more needs to be said. Davion Keys was looking very crisp throughout the individual periods as well.During the portion of practice where I watched the star position, I was able to see CJ Jimcoily, and he looks like a great fit for this spot. Dashawn Spears is the guy, but it’s comforting knowing he has great depth behind him.For the first time, I was able to see Jordan Seaton getting some live reps, and this young man looks like an NFL left tackle. His feet are so smooth and agile for someone his size. His first strike is absolutely violent and blew the opposing defender back with a head pop. It was really special to see him in contact.While watching the QBs, they were throwing to receivers and tight ends in several different scenarios. The TEs were primarily working in the red zone, and right now, the rhythm and relationship that Sam Leavitt and Trey’Dez Green are developing could and should be the separator for this offense. Anywhere Leavitt placed the ball, Green was going to get it and was doing so effortlessly.Once the QBs finished with the TEs, they worked on several different route situations with the receivers. One was a sideline pump-and-go that Leavitt was able to connect on deep with Tyree Holloway. They then worked on deep out routes from the opposite half, or wide side, of the field. The first one was completed to Jackson Harris. He had to make a little bit of an adjustment to the ball but was able to remain in bounds.The other ball was a back-shoulder sideline dot to Malik Elzy, who was able to keep two feet in bounds for the completion. Leavitt is getting better and better with each practice, and that’s promising to see.The final position group I wanted to share my thoughts on is the edges. Every day, I’m coming away impressed with Lamar Brown. He is truly improving every single time out. His technique, approach, and, most importantly, his attitude truly shine. He is giving his all—and I mean maximum effort—on each rep. He’s taking the coaching and applying it right away. This kid is absolutely special.This edge room has some depth concerns, but those concerns are rooted in a lack of experience. This room is very talented. Dylan Carpenter, Kolaj Cobbins, and now Jaiden Breaker are all really talented athletes. Can they turn the corner? That remains to be seen. But when it comes to Lamar Brown, he is turning that corner, and soon he will be turning heads.There’s a walkthrough tomorrow with no media availability. All-Star Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz will wear a brace on his injured right thumb through at least early September and is in jeopardy of missing the rest of 2026 season.Manager Mark Kotsay offered an update to reporters on Tuesday and didn't sound optimistic about Kurtz's chances of playing again in 2026."Four weeks of no mobility," Kotsay said of Kurtz, per MLB.com’s Martín Gallegos. "You probably can do the timeline and think through the scenarios in front of us for Nick."Kurtz landed on the injured list on Aug. 4 for a second time with the thumb injury that initially caused him to miss 10 games in July. He aggravated the injury that was diagnosed as an acute on chronic volar plate tear of the MCP joint in his right thumb.Nick Kurtz's second MLB season is likely done.AP Photo/Ellen SchmidtKurtz had a platelet-rich-plasma injection on Aug. 4 that Kotsay said Tuesday went well. But he's slated to wear a brace for four weeks following the injection, meaning he'll be restricted by the brace through at least early September. Kurtz would then need to work his wrist and his body back into baseball shape before returning to the field. Even if he ramped up before the conclusion of the season on Sept. 27, he'd be returning to a team that started Monday at 47-72, the second worst record in the American league. The Athletics aren't in the playoff hunt.There would be little motivation for the Athletics to bring Kurtz back at that point, and his season is likely done.If so, Kurtz finishes his second season as a bright spot in another down year for an Athletics team playing without a permanent home as it waits for its Las Vegas stadium to be built.Kurtz followed up his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2025 with his first All-Star selection in 2026. In 99 games, Kurtz has slashed .256/.296/.483 with 21 home runs, 69 RBI, 7 stolen bases and 79 walks. He fell off from a .290/.383/.619 slash line in his rookie season that also earned him a Silver Slugger award, but continued to show plenty of promise as an anchor for the Athletics' future.But his present with the team appears to be on hold.

After a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans there's still no clarity for the San Francisco 49ers on their left guard battle according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.Shanahan on Tuesday spoke with reporters after the 49ers wrapped up their joint practice with the Titans and indicated that nothing changed in the race for the fifth and final starting spot on San Francisco's offensive line. Entering practice it was veteran Robert Jones and second-year player Connor Colby who were the presumed frontrunners at the position with rookie Carver Willis potentially making his way into the mix. That was where Shanahan said things still stood after practice. "I think it's too early to say," Shanahan said. "There definitely is a battle there. It's open for anybody. Those guys would probably be the lead at it. Love to get Carver in that, too. Him missing a week or whatever it was with his concussion made him out of it a little bit, but he's been out two practices in a row. It's still early. We want to see those guys in the games, too, but it's definitely a battle for us to see who gets that spot.”There's a distinct difference between an open battle with multiple good players and one hasn't been able to separate themselves, and an open battle with multiple players who aren't good enough to step into the vacancy. Colby and Jones have had some issues with the starting group, and now Shanahan is potentially resting the team's hopes on a fifth-round draft pick who is changing positions after playing offensive tackle in college. San Francisco won't need to nail down a definite starter until Week 1, but the fact they're inside of a month to go until their regular season opener and the coaching staff is still awaiting a player to put a stranglehold on the starting LG job is not a great sign entering their preseason opener. Nolan McLean bounced back on Tuesday, but his performance was wasted by a lifeless offense.The Mets' young ace tossed six innings, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out three in a 4-0 loss to the Braves on Tuesday night. However, the one hit he allowed was a solo home run to Ozzie Albies in the fifth inning.McLean’s strong outing came after he allowed five earned runs in his previous appearance against the Cleveland Guardians.The Mets put together just four hits the entire game, two coming off the bat of Carson Benge and were 0 for 2 with runners in scoring position.Jefry Yan followed McLean and there was no jumping in the air for him tonight. The southpaw recorded two outs but allowed a run on one hit and three walks as it was far from an entertaining outing.Chayce McDermott tossed 1 1/3 innings to end the game, allowing two runs on a Matt Olson homer in the eighth. The Mets were seeking their third win in a row and seventh in their last eight games but will have to start a new positive stretch on Wednesday night in the series finale and rubber match against the Braves.Zac Thornton will take the ball for the Mets. Thornton is 3-2 with a 2.52 ERA in seven starts this season. Tyler Mahle (3-9 with a 4.83 ERA) will toe the slab for the Braves.

Oregon football wrapped up its sixth practice of the 2026 season on Aug. 11 and the only part of coach Dan Lanning beginning to wear down is his voice, which was raspy from an afternoon of "encouraging" his players."It's that time of year," he said with a smile.Other than that, Lanning is thrilled to be in the thick of fall camp as the Ducks prepare for the Sept. 5 opener against Boise State."I love being on the grass, man," Lanning said. "I love seeing guys that make a mistake one day, they come out and fix a mistake the next day. A guy that pushes a little bit harder and fights his way through practice because it's taxing. "He's been an unbelievable teammate. He's been a great teammate for Dante (Moore), a great guy to have in the room," Lanning said. "I'm really excited to see what he can do and let the play speak for itself. But he's getting better every day. "With the injury that he (had) in the spring, I don't want to put a timetable on it, but he's going to be out for some time."Platt played in a reserve role and on special teams the past two seasons. Heading into the the Peach Bowl in January, he was moved to running back to give that position group some depth after injuries and transfers left the Ducks thin in the backfield.The top of the depth chart at inside linebacker for the Ducks remains Jerry Mixon and Devon Jackson. I just think Will, because he's gotten to do more football through the summer, that he's a little bit farther along, but I feel good about both of them."Even though Sorsby was signed from the NCAA transfer portal to give the Red Raiders certainty at quarterback during Hammond's rehab, Hammond was unabashed in his belief he was Tech's best option all along.Terrance Carter Jr. said that's been evident in the first week of practice. Glasker, a three-star recruit (247Sports) who graduated from nearby Lehi High last December so he could enroll early at BYU, was one of the breakout stars in spring camp and has picked up where he left off this month in preseason training camp.Sitake said Monday that Glasker has “solidified his spot” with the first-team offense, along with Oregon transfer Kyler Kasper and Jojo Phillips, the redshirt junior who has shown flashes of brilliance but a lack of consistency, partly due to injury, in three seasons in the program.“I didn’t anticipate that (sudden rise to potential starter), just because it doesn’t happen a lot,” Sitake said. “So it’s a credit to him how he’s picked up our playbook, and how smart he is. The 36-year-old is in his 16th season in the majors, all of which have been spent in Houston. But even the best ships see their sails rip from time to time. As impenetrable as the Fever have been to everything around them, the noise broke through over the weekend and touched a nerve.Publicly, Indiana head coach Stephanie White used her pregame press conference to offer a fiery defense of her character amid criticisms that she didn’t do enough to defend her player, Sophie Cunningham, after a hard foul in Saturday’s win over the Sky.Privately, her superstar guard, Caitlin Clark, promised to have her back. Clark and the Fever stepped up in defense of her coach, first on the court as they downed the Liberty for their seventh win in nine games. Then, they took to the podium postgame and made their feelings on their head coach known.“I talked to Steph earlier in the day, too, and I think we forget a lot of times, like, we’re human and she has feelings,” Clark said. “There’s moments that are really hard and sometimes that’s just the job you sign up for, but at the same time, it’s OK to feel those emotions and I just told her, like, I’ve been through the same thing. There’s been days where I’ve been really upset and you can have the thickest skin in the world, but sometimes it does get to you. “I think our world is just, we love to hate, we love to divide,” Clark added. “Like, that’s all we want to do. Nobody wants to see each other succeed and I think that’s a really painful thing for myself to watch. I feel like we need to do a better job at uplifting each other. I can assure you there was no way we were losing this game tonight, and I told her that before the game. There was no way we were losing this game for her.”However isolated the noise may have felt over the weekend, as it largely came from a vocal minority, it spilled over enough to lead to boos during pregame introductions when White was announced. Clark, who has ardently defended White this season, offered her strongest defense yet, calling out those fans who booed pregame.“It’s tough,” Clark added. “That’s my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest. And you can disagree and this and that, and I get it. It’s professional sports. People are going to boo, but at the end of the day, that’s our head coach and we’re going to ride for her and we’re always going to have her back and it’s never going to tear our locker room apart.”Clark was at the center of the team’s victory, finishing with 22 points and 10 assists in 35 minutes. Her backcourt mate, Kelsey Mitchell, continued her record-breaking run by scoring 28 points, giving her 17 straight games with at least 20 points.Behind them, the Fever are surging. They’re now 11-4 in their last 15 games and are moving up the standings, now just a game back of the Aces in the No. 3 seed. When the pair got into a verbal argument during a game earlier this season, the story blew up.Clark not only downplayed it at the time, but also spoke about her relationship with White. She revealed that, when she suffered her season-ending injury in the 2025 season, she “bawled in Steph’s arms.”Clearly, those words only lasted so long before the ficklest of fans turned on White again, this time for an even more irrational reason. This time, Clark stepped up for her coach not only by helping lead the team to a win for her, but also making her feelings on her coach and her team crystal clear yet again.“I just love her and I feel for her because I know it can be a lot of times,” Clark said. “She does a great job a lot of times blocking it out, but there’s other moments where it can get under your skin and that’s just being human and that’s just life. There are tough days and there are tough moments, but just proud of our group.“I think we showed like what we’re all about tonight. We came out, we had fun, we shared the ball and we played with joy and a smile on our face. To be honest, we really just did it for her and we did it for each other and the girls in our locker room.”

The Indiana Fever built up their walls, insisting they don’t pay attention to anything outside them. Really, they had no choice, lest they fall victim to the unrelenting noise surrounding them. But it doesn’t matter how thick the barrier is. Slam a sledgehammer into it enough times, and cracks will spread. When it broke on Tuesday night, head coach Stephanie White sat framed inside, pounding a Gainbridge Fieldhouse press conference table in tones unfamiliar for the level-headed leader.Her frustration was clear. So, too, that the Fever (21-12) aren’t immune to the storm roiling outside, even as they climbed to fourth in the standings. They’re clinging to home-court advantage in the playoffs following a 106-92 win over the New York Liberty. It was merely a month ago that Clark, the epicenter of increasingly loud discourse since she entered the league in 2024, said her own piece (at least in part) in the aftermath of an uncalled Flagrant 2 Foul committed on her by Alyssa Thomas. She took issue with outsiders commenting on her character, even when her team stood staunchly with her against such negative claims. White, in the wake of a called Flagrant 2 Foul committed by Chicago Sky wing DiJonai Carrington on Sophie Cunningham last weekend, did the same. Online mouthpieces of varying sizes dragged her name through the mud over the last few days, asserting that she didn’t care about her own player’s health and safety. That she went first to Carrington, a player she coached when they both were in Connecticut, even though she clearly went to speak to a ref; and regularly failed to defend her own players. “I stand by them, I will always stand by them,” White said in conclusion to a two-minute-long statement that stood as her only pre-game remarks to local reporters. “Everybody else can go to hell.” Stephanie White made the following statement before tonight's game: pic.twitter.com/VkYThRldsu— Indiana Fever (@IndianaFever) August 11, 2026Incorrect “news reports” on X — multiple degrees of separation away from credible sources — claimed on Tuesday morning that the Fever had fired her. The organization released a statement in conjunction with White’s remarks stating she has “full support.” White said that the response to the Carrington-Cunningham play prompted her to make the statement at this juncture. Her previous, less bombastic statements about the constant noise hadn’t been heard. She said the league was being hijacked for all the wrong reasons.That, and the play flared up in part because of Cunningham’s previous statements on transgender women’s participation in women’s sports, a discussion that is entering its second month despite there being no immediate decision needed. Carrington posted on Threads after the ejection, “White privilege,” and tagged the Fever, inflaming the situation further. It reached national broadcast news, with lawmakers and former NBA players forcing their way into the conversation by any means necessary. “As a women’s league, sometimes we’re an easy target,” White said. “We just want to try to keep the main thing, I think it’s important that we understand that we need to focus on this group and how they’re playing basketball right now, because they’ve been playing incredible basketball. And so I’d like to stop talking about the other s***.” Her players spent all last week attempting in vain to refocus on basketball, admittedly a selfish request given how well they’ve performed. The most frustrating thing is, for all the (waves hands as wildly as possible) other stuff people want to talk about regarding the Fever, they’re actually a pretty damn good basketball team with a championship ceiling, and proved it again against 2024 title winners New York on Tuesday night. “I can assure you, there was no way we were losing this game tonight,” Clark said. “And I told [White] that before the game. Clark took advantage of a sagging defender and drilled a 27-footer a mere 15 seconds into the game, eliciting a “silky start by Caitlin Clark” call that ESPN play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco surely had waiting in the holster. The entire first half screamed “eff ’em all,” even the smattering of fans at Gainbridge who booed their head coach. Clark, leading the league in assists (8.2) and fourth in scoring (21.7), said she felt sick hearing it. The Fever weren’t even in the locker room for halftime by the time Kelsey Mitchell extended her record streak of 20-plus point games to 17. The team was 11 of 14 from 3-point range, staking out a lead as high as 21. They went into the break up, 64-46, with 38 points combined from Clark and Mitchell. The backcourt duo came into the game combining to average 51.6 points per game over their last 10. Clark’s improved mid-range shot makes a defense look silly, and her teammates into sharp-shooting stars. The Liberty cut to within nine in a third quarter described as “a little slumpy” by Cunningham. The Fever then lit the fire anew, pulling away with ease for a 14-point win. They play again on Aug. 22 in New York, leading the series, 2-1. The box score rarely fails to showcase the embarrassment of riches White coaches every day. Mitchell led all scorers with 28 points, going 4 of 4 from the perimeter and 7 of 12 on 2s. Clark added to her career double-double mark with 22 points and 10 assists, drilling 4 of 8 3s. It was her 19th career 20-10 game, more than the totals of every other franchise. Cunningham was plus-17, a game-high, with 12 points, shooting 4 of 5. Mo Billings came off the bench for 14. Makayla Timpson started her second consecutive game and led on the defensive glass. Aliyah Boston, the third head of one of the league’s most lethal trios, went to work in the fourth, finishing with 19 points and 3 3s of her own. The 6-5 center had never made more than seven in an entire season before working to stretch the floor this past offseason, enabling the Fever to reach another level.“These women are playing incredible basketball, and they deserve to be celebrated for that,” White said after the win. “And I give them a ton of credit. Winners focus on winning. And that’s what they’re doing.” Incredible, and historic. It’s not that the Fever won that game for their coach. They’ve been winning, and performing, at a level no fan has ever seen. The Fever are averaging a record-high 95.906 points per game, on track to best the 2010 Phoenix Mercury’s 93.882. Their 115.27 offensive rating coming into Tuesday night is nearly identical to the league-leading Minnesota Lynx’s 115.35. Both outpace the elite 2019 Washington Mystics champions, known as one of the best offensive teams in league history (114.5).For years, the WNBA was mired in claims that final scores could barely crack 100 points combined. Now the Fever missing triple digits is a bad night at the office. It’s the type of fast-paced, heavy-scoring basketball the majority of people want to watch. And they are. For a second consecutive week, ESPN boasted its second-most-watched WNBA game in its history. Both included the Fever. It takes a mind-bending conspiracy to imagine those numbers are for all the other stuff — though, surely, someone is on social media conjuring the claim. Which is a real shame. Teams like this one don’t come around often, and there’s no guarantee the trio remains intact next year. White is not a “woe is me” coach. She takes blame as much as she gives it. To use the pre-game media window, all of which is pushed to YouTube and clipped onto social media, as a pulpit to those outside the room was done purposefully by someone who rarely uses the medium as such.The Fever cannot fully insulate themselves. But they can make their narrative clear, in their play on the court and their words off it. “First and foremost, basketball,” White said. “At the end of the day, our team is playing great basketball. Our league is the best athletes in the world. They should be celebrated.”

For the second time this season, FC Cincinnati lost a tough heartbreaking game at a crucial point in a major tournament to a Mexican side.\nCincinnati lost 2-1 to Atlas FC in their third group-stage game in the Leagues Cup Aug. 11 at TQL Stadium. Cincy conceded two goals from the 79th minute on to squander a big chance to advance in the tournament.\n\nCincinnati finished 2-1 in the group stage with six points. Pending the results of other group-stage games Aug. 12 and 13, Cincinnati will likely be eliminated from the tournament.\nIt was a similar finish to the club’s loss in the Concacaf Champions Cup to Tigres in the round of 16. Cincinnati lost a 3-0 lead in the aggregate series and was eliminated when Tigres scored at the death in March and won the game, 5-1.\n“Yeah, it's a tough one,” said Cincinnati’s Gerardo Valenzuela. “We definitely had the motivation and the confidence to go and win this tournament and we were playing so well in these few games.”\nCan FC Cincinnati advance to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals?\n\nCincinnati faces very long odds to be one of the four Major League Soccer clubs to advance to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.\nColumbus and Charlotte have already finished ahead of Cincy at the end of play Aug. 11. Columbus defeated Pumas in a PK shootout to finish with eight points in the group stage. Charlotte lost 1-0 to Pachuca and finished with six points, but finished ahead of Cincy in goal differential at plus-four to plus-three.\nEntering the night, there were five other MLS teams that could finish ahead of Cincy in points. I think we should have shown them, should have shown the same.”\nCincinnati conceded two goals late in the game\n\nHolding a 1-0 lead with 12 minutes left in regulation, FC Cincinnati allowed two goals on rebound shots to lose the game.\nAtlas tied it in the 79th. Florian Monzon knocked in a rebound off a shot that goalkeeper Evan Louro couldn't control, and it was 1-1.\nAtlas took a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute. Jesus Serrato, a 20-year old academy player for Atlas who came in late in the game, knocked in a rebound from close range after a hard shot form Ryan Mmaee.\n“With the first goal, with the turnover, and then the shot at the rebound and all of it, there are enough moments to prevent that,” Noonan said. “I think that's pretty clear. And then the second one, a couple duels lost with some direct play, and then still plenty of moments to prevent the shot. Yeah, that's a disappointing one with where we were positioned and how we finished.”\nFC Cincinnati couldn’t crack World Cup star Camilo Vargas\nCincinnati had 17 shots on the night. Atlas keeper Camilo Vargas, coming off an outstanding World Cup performance with four clean sheets for Colombia, made some outstanding saves down the stretch.\nOne of his toughest came in second-half stoppage time and set up a controversial call. Cincinnati’s Ayoub Jabbari was near the left post and headed a cross that Vargas saved. The ball deflected in front of him. Jabbari and an Atlas player slid to try to get to it. The Atlas player was called for a penalty when he missed the ball and hit Jabbari’s foot on the follow-through.\nThe call went to video-assisted review, and the lead official waved off the penalty. Vargas made a great save on Tom Barlow soon after, and the final whistle sounded.\nIf Cincy had tied the game late, it would have earned one point for the draw, then the teams would have gone to a penalty shootout for an extra point. Getting those one or two points would have been vital for Cincinnati's chances of getting to the quarterfinals. \n“We had a good opportunity with the chance that we didn't convert,” Noonan said. “It’s a 50-50 ball, but they didn't go to the penalty, so I don't have too much argument. We had a chance to finish before the penalty. When I look back at it, doesn't look like it's egregious in a call that shouldn't be overturned. So that's not the difference.”\nSaid Valenzuela: “It’s just finishing the game. Like the chances we get, we get multiple chances that even after the goal that we either could have tied or could have went up 2-0 and put the game away, then control the whole game.”\nFC Cincinnati took the lead with more Evander magic\n\nCincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute with another Evander shot from outside the box. All the Pope Power in the world couldn’t stave off a loss in extras on Tuesday, 5-4. | Chicago White Sox For the first seven innings, it certainly seemed like the White Sox (61-57) channeled the Pope in the series opener, mashing three solo home runs for three of their four runs in front of a 40,000-person crowd, all wearing Pope hats. Unfortunately, the Chicago bullpen wasn’t as blessed, and wound up blowing the save in the top of the eighth, allowing the Reds (57-61) to come all the way back and steal the game in the top of the 10th, 5-4.Righthander Sean Burke looked as good as ever, and outside of a solo home run given up to Eugenio Suárez, he was completely under control, only surrendering one run on three hits while striking out eight along the way. Burke put together three true 1-2-3 innings in his seven innings of work: the first, third and fourth (he technically recorded four outs in the third, with Héctor Rodríguez reaching on a dropped-third strike). In fact, Edgar Quero was just as devoured by Burke’s knuckle curve that dove out of the zone to the ground as Rodríguez, who completely whiffed. The pitch was so far out of the strike zone that it didn’t even appear in the MLB Gameday feed:Offensively, the South Siders were looking great early in the game, blasting three solo home runs and an RBI double to go up four runs, 4-0. The White Sox were averaging a long ball an inning through two, beginning with Brenton Doyle smashing a first-pitch, leadoff home run in the first, and Edgar Quero following it up with one of his own in the bottom of the second, giving Burke and Chicago a pair of insurance runs early in the game.The Good Guys took an inning off of the moon shots in the third, but Miguel Vargas picked it right back up in the fourth, driving the third Sox bomb of the day over the left-field fence, 3-0:The fun didn’t stop there, though. Randal Grichuk ripped his 15th double of the season to restart a rally, and advanced to third on a ground ball from Braden Montgomery to put himself in scoring position. With two outs, Quero was bailed out on an 0-2 count by getting hit by a pitch, and Sam Antonacci legged out a two-bagger to score the fourth run of the game for the South Siders, 4-0.Burke had cruised through the first four, and didn’t allow a hit until Eugenio Suárez took him deep on a solo shot in the fifth. He otherwise retired the next three batters in order, not letting the blemish to his outing get to him in the slightest. Suárez seemed to have Burke’s number tonight, however, as he smoked a double in the seventh, sending Sean with a parting gift before his day was over. Once again Burke remained calm and in control, striking out the final two batters he faced to complete his excellent performance, seemingly on the hook for a win with a three-run lead going into the eighth.The issue, however, is that the bats shut down for the rest of the game, and the Chicago bullpen apparently did not want to take Burke’s unhittable cue. Lefthander Bryan Hudson came in to relieve the starter in the top of the eighth, and he had a rare, weak outing where the batters were just all over him. Hudson gave up three straight singles before being taken out of the game, after Elly Da La Cruz mashed the third hit while driving in Cincy’s second run of the game to cut the White Sox lead in half, 4-2.Ideally Hudson would have lasted way longer than three batters, but he was getting dinked and doinked enought that Will Venable made the call to the bullpen early, bringing Grant Taylor in to manage what we hoped would be the final two innings of a win on the South Side. Taylor was able to get Sal Stewart to fly out for the first out of the inning, but he walked JJ Bleday to load the bases up and raise everyone’s heart rate. The Bleday walk didn’t end up coming back to bite them on the scoreboard, but Tyler Stephenson was able to poke a base hit out to right, scoring two runs to tie the game up at four. Thankfully, Munetaka Murakami made the wise decision to cut Braden Montgomery’s on-line throw headed home and fired to second behind Bleday to catch him off of second base for a clutch second out, before Suárez flew out to end the inning. All three runs were charged to Hudson, though Grant Taylor wound up with the blown save.The White Sox were brutally flat at the plate for the rest of the game, with only Murakami getting a hit, with a double in the bottom of the eighth to extend his on-base streak. Though the South Siders only left four on base, they went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.Lefthander Sean Newcomb came in for the 10th in an effort to prevent the ghost runner from scoring, but the Reds were able to score their free run while Chicago bombed all three opportunities in the bottom of the 10th. For Cincinnati, back-to-back fly outs let the runner advance to third, and score on a sacrifice fly from De La Cruz to take the lead, 5-4. Yep, the Reds won it in the 10th without the benefit of a hit. Great new rules, MLB.Sam Antonacci battled through a 14-pitch at-bat before striking out against Reds closer Emilio Pagán for the first out of the 10th. Luisangel Acuña and Tristan Peters were the last hope for the Good Guys, but both popped out in the infield, sealing a heartbreaker on the South Side, and losing a game on the Detroit Tigers in the division race to boot.Tomorrow is another day, and while we can hope the Cleveland Guardians can even out the series with the Tigers to hold the division lead to at least 2 ½ games, but the White Sox need to come back with a vengeance tomorrow and take care of business. Verdigris spent last season knocking on the door of the state tournament.With eight seniors back to help lead the way, the Lady Cardinals believe this could be the year they kick it down and return to that stage for the first time since 2022.Verdigris enters the 2026 volleyball season with an experienced roster and plenty of motivation after coming up just short of a trip to Class 3A state last fall, losing a five-set classic to Chouteau-Mazie in the regional championship.Coach Caleb Horton said he believes that experience gives the Lady Cardinals a foundation reminiscent of some of his better teams, even if there is still work to be done before the season gets underway.“They're pretty solid, and they're a lot of fun to watch,” Horton said. “But we still have struggles and are kind of streaky. But it'll be nice to get the season started and see how they handle it.”What Verdigris may lack in preparation time, it makes up for in varsity experience.Eight seniors headline the roster, including Addi McMahan, Andie Boyd, Emerson Wawrzonek, Kaydence O'Brien, ShiAnne Sanchez, Jylian Pagan, Mia Guerrero and Julia Timms.McMahan figures to be one of the Lady Cardinals' primary offensive weapons with her ability as a hitter, while Boyd provides consistency at setter. Wawrzonek, a transfer from Owasso, adds another experienced piece, and O'Brien gives Verdigris another steady senior presence.Although the group can occasionally be streaky, its understanding of the game stands out.“Experience wise, I've got a few smart players,” Horton said. “They understand the game really well. I've got some that are still learning, but they work hard, and I think as long as they have a good mindset, we'll be pretty good this season.”That volleyball IQ could prove especially valuable in a Class 4A landscape that offers little room for error.Six private schools reside in the Lady Cardinals' classification, creating another difficult road toward the state tournament. After getting close last season in 3A, navigating that field will be one of the team's biggest challenges.“Getting to the state tournament is going to be a little difficult, even though they did some moving around of the classes,” Horton said. “We've still got quite a few privates in there, and we'll try to claim one of those spots that are open.”Verdigris, however, may be better equipped to handle adversity this time around.Depth was an issue when injuries struck last season, but Horton said he believes the Lady Cardinals have more options throughout the roster this year.That has allowed the coaching staff to experiment with different lineups while also giving younger players opportunities to establish themselves.Charlie Watson, Sophi Nick, Jolie White, Trista Maxey and Tynleigh Jackson-Davis are among the younger players Horton is excited to see develop around the veteran core.Having those options could help Verdigris avoid overworking its primary rotation and provide insurance if injuries arise.“If we can stay away from injury, we'll be pretty good,” Horton said. “Last year, we had no depth. We were really strong, but any couple of injuries were really hurtful. This year, that's not the issue. Last year, that got us a couple of times. You play with what you got, and we knew that. But this year, it's nice to have a little bit of freedom to experiment and pull people up, give them a chance.”The early returns have been encouraging.The Lady Cardinals recently hosted a 10-team scrimmage and came away with only one loss, which came against North Rock Creek. The performance offered Horton an opportunity to evaluate different combinations before the results begin counting.Several early matches should provide further measuring sticks.Among the games Horton has circled is a rematch with Oologah after the Lady Mustangs defeated Verdigris last season. Verdigris will also have tournament competition to test its depth and consistency.There is a change to the conference schedule as well, with the Lady Cardinals' matchup against rival Inola moving to the middle of the season.That contest will also serve as the Lady Cardinals' senior night, putting an added spotlight on a class that will play a significant role in determining how far Verdigris goes.For Horton, the ingredients are there: eight seniors, improved depth, promising young players and the experience of coming painfully close a year ago.Now comes the part that matters most: turning that potential into the state-tournament appearance Verdigris narrowly missed last season.“It’ll be nice to get started,” Horton said. “We’re tired of scrimmaging each other and practicing.”

I feel really good. Yeah, last year I was banged up but, I mean, the whole team was.”He'll need to find a way to avoid being banged up. Part of his appeal is that he'll play through anything. At some point, however, it impacts his performance.That's where it could get interesting, if he has multiple injuries through which he's playing in 2026. At some point, Mayfield at less than 100 percent may not be a better option than Jake Browning at full strength. And the coaching staff (and/or the front office) may be inclined to ask him to take a seat, if they think it's in the best interests of the team.Given the contractual posture, that becomes a potentially dicey move. Mayfield is trying to earn his next contract. He may not take kindly to any talk of being removed temporarily.It all comes down to Mayfield avoiding unnecessary hits that he has a habit of at times embracing. It's one thing to be healthy when there's no contact. Starting in Week 1, it will be open season on all NFL quarterbacks. Mayfield's short-term interests, and his long-term prospects, may hinge on staying as healthy as he can, for as long as he can.

She’s part of a community of some 369,000 people in the island nation who are subject to rapidly changing policies — and some say discrimination — as tensions rise with China and Taiwan’s government questions the spouses’ allegiances. For the two months she served before being forced out of the legislature, Li was the country’s only China-born lawmaker who had immigrated to Taiwan by marriage.“It’s only because of Taiwan which has this free and democratic system, and the Taiwan People’s Party which was willing to give a political newcomer a chance, that I could have this opportunity,” she told The Associated Press in July. But now, fears of a military invasion by China have complicated Taiwan’s policy toward spouses like Li. With the sides still at an impasse in April, Li’s party expelled her. The government then toughened standards Chinese-born legislators must meet. “There’s no political consideration here,” a spokesperson for the Mainland Affairs council said in defending the decision. Some scholars, though, say that Taiwan’s government is enforcing the law selectively. “The government these few years, they are interpreting many of the laws wrongly, or in a distorted way,” said Bruce Liao, a law professor and expert in immigration law at National Chengchi University.“You can’t move against the Mainland,” he added. “But you can bully the ‘mainland spouses’ here, and use them to create hostility.” Others defend the approach as a national security matter. “The government has a compelling interest in protecting the safety of the country,” said Yen-Tu Su, a researcher at Academia Sinica in Taiwan. “And so usually the government would have some leeway in determining whether a foreign resident is a threat to the social order or safety of the society.”‘Mainland spouses’ are treated differently from other immigrants by lawEven before recent controversies, spouses born in China were treated differently from spouses born anywhere else. For example, “mainland spouses” can apply for Taiwanese citizenship after six years, while foreign spouses can apply in four years. They also must be Taiwanese citizens for 10 years before they can apply for government jobs, while foreign spouses can apply for most lower-level government jobs right after becoming citizens. Behind the difference in law is a question of loyalty. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)2026-08-12T04:02:32Z Doctors say President Donald Trump’s new executive order on vaccines is misguided and likely to stoke fear and confusion among parents at a time when measles is raging, immunization rates are falling and children are heading back to school. “Many families are finishing up that back-to-school checklist, and among those things is the medical checkup and assuring that their kids have their vaccines,” Michigan pediatrician Dr. Molly O’Shea said. “To put into question the safety or efficacy of these vaccines right now is really unfortunate and ill-conceived.” The order, signed Monday, advocates separating the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three different single-disease shots and giving all childhood immunizations at separate appointments when possible. It also includes several changes to the childhood vaccine schedule already attempted by Trump’s health department but blocked by a federal judge. The department is run by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who helped lead the anti-vaccine movement for years. Trump repeatedly suggested the number or timing of vaccines could play a role in rising rates of autism spectrum disorder, even though decades of studies have firmly concluded there is no link. He also strongly suggested that the MMR vaccine could be harmful or even deadly.Dr. Paul Offit, a Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia vaccine researcher and former government adviser, said the recommendations by Trump and Kennedy “are just not science based,” and it’s irresponsible to cast doubt on a vaccine that protects against measles when the nation is facing its biggest epidemic in more than 30 years.“The harm that it will cause is … to induce chaos and confusion into the system, so people aren’t sure what they’re supposed to do,” he said. Nearly 30 years after his father went missing, Ademi both feared and wished that his remains will finally be found. Ademi was just 9 when he last saw his father, Adem Ademi, a prominent surgeon who disappeared along with 22 other intellectuals in April 1999, just months before the end of the war. Some 1,600 people are still missing from the conflict, believed scattered in unmarked mass graves, and Ademi’s family had endured years of anguish and disappointments at failed efforts to find his father’s remains. They are now cautiously optimistic because the newly found graves are near to where Ademi was last seen. Excavations near the villages of Upper and Lower Kalluder, in the northern municipality of Zubin Potok, started in late July after the discovery of human remains there. Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti has said that the authorities believe the victims could be the missing intellectuals, who allegedly were caught as they were trying to flee Kosovo to avoid being rounded up by Serb troops. “Always, when we hear about the beginning of the excavations, there is a mixed feeling, a feeling of hope and a feeling of pain,” Ademi said. “No matter how many years pass, the feeling of pain will always exist … but at the same time there has always been hope, a feeling that finally the truth will be revealed.”Kosovo’s missing include roughly 1,200 ethnic Albanians, around 400 ethnic Serbs and dozens of Roma, according to the Humanitarian Law Center rights group. They moved from village to village before arriving in Baidoa, now a major hub for people fleeing drought, insecurity and food shortages, on Aug. 3.“We are very hungry and in a desperate situation,” Mohamed said. “We have nothing to eat and can only place our hope in God, as He is the one who sustains us through this ordeal that culminated in our trip.”The family’s journey is one example of a deepening humanitarian emergency in Somalia, where years of drought, conflict and economic pressures are pushing more families from rural communities into displacement camps as hunger rises and humanitarian funding shrinks. About 2 million people are facing emergency levels of food insecurity, more than double the number recorded last year, according to Plan International, which has provided assistance to more than 200,000 people in Somalia this year. The humanitarian group and Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency are calling for increased international assistance, with concern that the crisis could be compounded by another climate shock later this year.The U.N. Children are suffering from malnutritionData released in May by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a global hunger monitoring system, showed that about half of children under 5 in Somalia were facing acute malnutrition.Plan International, citing Save the Children, said the number of children receiving treatment for the most dangerous form of malnutrition in Baidoa had nearly tripled over six months.Dr. Omar Abdikarin, a nutritionist in Baidoa, said patients are arriving for treatment from the Bay as well as the neighboring Bakool and Gedo regions.“Malnutrition is prevalent in this region, and the majority of patients treated at this hospital suffer from malnourishment,” Abdikarin said.The health risks extend beyond malnutrition. Ghelani said she encountered children affected by outbreaks of diphtheria, measles, malaria, cholera and acute diarrhea. The prospect of heavy rainfall later this year presents a new threat to communities facing multiple crises. Intense rainfall and flooding could wash away homes and farmland, contaminate drinking water and force families to move again. Aid agencies warn that the expected El Nino conditions will compound the crisis for countless families before they have had time to recover from prolonged drought conditions. For families arriving in Baidoa such as Mohamed’s, the most urgent question is where to find clean water and food. The fire started about 4:15 a.m. while the Putri Yasmin ferry was en route from Padang Bai port in Bali to Lembar port on the neighboring island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province, according to the search office in Mataram, the provincial capital.The agency received an emergency report almost half an hour later and immediately deployed personnel and rescue vessels. Hariyadi said the rescue effort was supported by Indonesian navy ships, patrol boats and rescue vessels and a helicopter to make an aerial survey.The ferry was carrying 114 passengers and 17 crew members, Hariyadi said, citing passenger manifest data released by the Padang Bai’s port authority. The ferry also loaded 44 vehicles and 53 motorcycles.Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands where ferries are a common method of travel. This time, Cannon allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits in five frames. Despite that, the Knights only trailed by three when Cannon’s outing was over. Charlotte scored its three early runs on a single by Michael Turner in the first, a single by Ryan Galanie in the second, and a productive ground out by Turner in the fifth. In the sixth, the Knights trimmed the deficit on a single by Andy Weber to drive in Joey Wiemer, who singled and stole second to open the inning.The game’s biggest hit took place in the seventh. They're currently in a three-way tie with the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres for the final two wild-card spots.Karros hit his game-tying shot in the sixth off D-backs lefty Mitch Bratt that made it 2-all. The question of whether Tony Romo will continue to call NFL games for CBS has somewhat obscured the question of whether CBS will continue to broadcast NFL games.Like Fox, NBC, Prime Video, and YouTube, the CBS contract runs through 2029, once (as expected) the NFL exercises its prerogative to end the contracts four years early. Unlike the other networks, CBS has undergone a "change in control," which allows the NFL to reopen the current deal.The NFL already has embarked on active negotiations with CBS, with some reports suggesting the league may seek to bump the CBS annual fee from $2.1 billion to $3 billion — effective immediately. More recent reports have pointed to a stall in the negotiations, fueled by legal issues arising from its parent company's effort to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.At Tuesday's season-preview press event, CBS Sports president David Berson addressed the situation."We’re in constant conversation; we have so much business with them on so many other levels,” Berson told Drew Lerner of Awful Announcing. “There’s nothing to report on this right now, but the relationship is outstanding. We’re talking to them every day. I mentioned the viewership success we’ve had, I mentioned they covet reach so much; CBS is the number one network 17 of the last 18 years . . . so they really value what we provide and we also value what they’re providing. So conversations continue, but there’s nothing at this stage to talk about.”The NFL could, in theory, pull the plug on CBS and take its games back to the market. But who would assume the CBS Sunday-afternoon slate? The other networks have their existing windows. None of them presumably would want to add half of the full Sunday afternoon slate of games.And it would be important to keep the Sunday afternoon slate on broadcast TV. A pivot of a large swath of the most traditional "free" games to streaming would create more political pushback for the NFL.Of the broadcast networks, Fox already has its Sunday afternoon games. That leaves NBC and ABC, both of which have prime-time packages.If, alternatively, CBS does a new deal at a significant bump, what happens with the other networks? CBS probably wouldn't relish the opportunity to pay significantly more while the other partners are still paying the amounts due under the existing deals.The entire situation is delicate and tricky and likely at this point to lead to no new deals before the start of the 2026 regular season. Which is what the NFL seemed to want.And so the can will apparently be kicked into 2027. Which, coincidentally, may give the Commissioner even more leverage in ongoing talks to extend his contract, which expires in March.

Akram and his 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, allegedly began their attack by throwing four IEDs toward a Jewish crowd, but the devices failed to explode.Police described the devices as three aluminum pipe bombs and a tennis ball bomb containing an explosive, gunpowder and steel ball bearings. Hong, File)2026-08-12T04:02:34Z NEW YORK (AP) — It may be hard to believe, but even Sir Anthony Hopkins doubts himself sometimes. “There’s a part of me which says, ‘you didn’t write that,’” he recalls of composing his debut album, “Life Is a Dream.” “What’s it called? Impostor syndrome.”Thankfully, it did not stop him from finishing the collection of 12 compositions he crafted over six decades.Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra and recorded at London’s Alexandra Palace in April, it will be released by Decca Records on Aug. 21.“My first love, or vocation really, is music,” said the 88-year-old actor. “That sounds very official, but I was raised with a lot of music (of the) postwar years, and it influenced me. And I started playing the piano when I was quite young.” He picked up the instrument at 4 and began composing years later, writing his first piece, a waltz, in 1960. He was 22 at the time. “I find more freedom with music,” he says, compared to acting, which he labels “a discipline, you have to know your stuff. But music for me is a freewheeling kind of art form.”And he’s had his fair share of experience. Prior to the release of “Life Is a Dream,” Hopkins had composed scores for a number of films. “The opening of ‘Shadowlands’ is my first adventure in composing music,” he said, referring to the 1993 film he starred in as “The Chronicles of Narnia” author C.S. Lewis. Then he became the principal composer on a few other movies that he also starred in and directed, including 1996’s “August” and 2007’s “Slipstream.” 2020’s “Elyse.” Hopkins’ childhood informed “Life Is A Dream”“It’s about my childhood,” he says of the album, which shares its title with the Pedro Calderón de la Barca play. “It’s basically the memories of my childhood and growing up in Wales, and my developments in life, my adolescent years,” and so on. But he says “there’s a great sadness in it all because — don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a wonderful life — but underneath it all, there is the knowledge that life is one long goodbye. From the moment we’re born, we begin to die,” he starts to laugh. “Sounds so cheerful!” Read More That tension — or better put, wisdom — carries throughout the release. Take the first single as an example. “1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra: ll. Bracken Road” is the middle composition in a three-part suite about a particular summer in South Wales. He says it contains a “melancholy and sadness,” a sense that arises with its cello. “It’s the welcomed sound of nostalgia, of the strange, whimsical pain of life,” he describes the song. “All music is actually based in pain. Sounds pretty preposterous, but it is. It’s about the yearning.” The same can be said about the song “Stella Aria” — named after his wife, director and actor Stella Hopkins — that deals with “the loneliness in all of us,” he says, but is part of a path to “sheer happiness.” Hopkins has been reflecting for quite some time now — both in his memoir, “We Did OK, Kid,” released last fall — and on this album. “I look at my own life now, and especially this year; I’m going to be 89 at the end of the year. And I look back and I’m thinking, ‘good God, I couldn’t have planned any of this.’ From the moment I decided to become an actor, 70 years ago, I thought … ‘Why did I do that?’ I didn’t know, because I was pretty useless in school? I didn’t know what else to do. So I tried for a scholarship, became an actor instead of a musician. And suddenly I’m given a huge plate of success by some force of nature.”“I’m without fear of mortality,” he adds. “I’m just so grateful I’ve lived this long.” How Bradley Cooper was instrumental in the albumIn a surprising turn of events, actor Bradley Cooper “passed me on to Dudamel,” says Hopkins, after witnessing Hopkins’ composition a few years before with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Seal. Dudamel was on board.But when it came time to record at Alexandra Palace earlier this year, “I’m sitting there thinking, ‘How the hell did I write this?’ I have no idea,” said Hopkins. “And Dudamel said, ‘This is wonderful.’ … He is one of the most astonishing people I’ve met. He’s so full of life and so full of energy and love, and it’s quite extraordinary.”It’s a shared affection. “The same depth of imagination, humanity and emotional truth that has defined his extraordinary work on stage and screen is present in his music,” Dudamel said in a statement. “Anthony approaches music with the heart of a storyteller and the instincts of a poet, creating sound worlds that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.”Live performance may be on the horizonAfter his debut album, live performances may be next. The government’s latest report on consumer prices, to be released Wednesday, should provide some hints. It will be closely watched by the inflation-fighters at the Federal Reserve as well as Republicans facing tough midterm elections, not to mention consumers still struggling with high grocery prices. Americans have grappled with worsening inflation since early last year, after tariffs lifted the cost of imported goods. Then this spring, the Iran war raised oil and gas costs, pushing inflation to its highest level in three years. The AI buildout has also increased prices for computer chips and electronic equipment. All three trends could end up having only temporary effects and if they fade, inflation could drop back to the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Wednesday’s inflation report is expected to show that consumer prices rose 3.4% in July from a year earlier, according to a survey of economists by data provider FactSet. That would be down from 3.5% in June and lower than the recent peak of 4.2% in May.On a monthly basis, prices are expected to have risen just 0.1% from June to July, after they fell in June on sharply lower gas costs. Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core inflation may cool for a second month, to 2.5%, down from 2.6% in June, according to FactSet. Core prices — which the Fed pays particularly close attention to — likely rose 0.2% from June to July.A big reason inflation has cooled in the past couple of months is that gas prices fell after a cease-fire was reached in the U.S.-Iran war. Average gas prices were lower last month than in June, so that should reduce last month’s inflation reading. But gas prices rose again in late July and earlier this month, meaning inflation could pick up again when August’s figures are released next month, adding a layer of uncertainty. Read More On Tuesday, gas averaged $4.01 a gallon nationwide, 13 cents higher than a month ago. Overall, price increases have stayed above the Fed’s 2% target for more than five years, suggesting that more than temporary factors may be at work. The cost of services such as healthcare, restaurant meals, and car maintenance are on average rising at more than 3% annually, and they aren’t particularly sensitive to gas prices or AI investment. Rising costs for services often reflect higher wages, as companies charge more to offset the cost of higher pay. But incomes aren’t growing fast enough to sustain inflation, economists note. It’s a confounding situation that has left many economists — and Fed officials — seeking more information to determine where inflation is headed. “You’ve got all these things that are just not the way the economy used to behave,” Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, said. For many consumers, years of sharply rising grocery prices have led them to adopt a wide range of coping strategies, from comparison shopping, to couponing, to cutting back on favorite foods. Some retailers, such as Walmart, have responded by rolling back food prices, a trend that could have lowered July’s inflation figures. Yet many other firms are still passing on higher costs. Paint company Sherwin-Williams is planning an 8% price increase effective Sept. 1 to offset higher raw material costs, CEO Heidi Petz told analysts late last month. She said that because of the company’s strong relationships with suppliers, it was able to delay price increases until now.“We are seeing the impact of higher oil and related cost pressures, and we expect continued volatility throughout the balance of the year,” she said.Wednesday’s report comes as the Federal Reserve is sharply divided over whether it should hike its key interest rate to combat inflation. The Fed kept its rate unchanged, at about 3.6%, at a meeting late last month. But the vote was 9-3, with three dissenters favoring a rate hike. And at a July 29 news conference explaining the decision, chair Kevin Warsh was vague about the Fed’s next steps, in keeping with his focus on reining in the central bank’s previous willingness to signal whether it was prepared to raise or cut borrowing costs. “If inflation continues to be elevated ... interest rates could well be part of that solution,” he said. “But I wouldn’t say it’s in isolation.” Long-term interest rates rose after Warsh’s comments, suggesting investors worried that inflation could worsen in the coming months and the Fed might not lift borrowing costs to fight rising prices. Complicating matters, the government said last week that employers had cut jobs in July, a sign of potential economic weakness. The Fed typically avoids rate hikes when hiring is faltering, because higher borrowing costs could slow the economy further.
