Bay County high school football returns this week, with Kickoff Classics set for Friday, Aug. 14.All six Bay County football programs will take the field for their first live-action games ahead of the 2026 season, giving teams an opportunity to shake off the rust and get an early look at what they have been working on during the offseason.With all six games scheduled for Friday, local fans will have plenty of options to choose from. Mosley, Arnold and Bozeman will host their Kickoff Classics, while Bay High and Rutherford will hit the road. The calendar has flipped to August. Which means we're in the dog days of the NBA's year-round calendar. Little will happen over the next two months as teams across the league prepare for the 2026-27 season. Before we move on, though, let's reflect one last time on last year.The Oklahoma City Thunder had a league-best 64-18 regular-season record. Juggling injuries all year, they overcame notable absences all year. Alas, they fell short of a second NBA championship with a 2026 Western Conference Finals exit.To reflect on their 2025-26 season, Thunder Wire will conduct player grades for all 20 players who suited up for them this past year. Twelfth up is Thomas Sorber, who missed his first season with a torn ACL:Stay healthyThis is the big one for Sorber. It'll be about 18 months between games. That's a long time to be sidelined in basketball. He missed the last month of his collegiate season with foot surgery in Feb. 2025. He then had a season-ending torn ACL in Sept. 2025. And then he had a second knee surgery in July 2025. He missed a second straight Summer League. The first time he'll get to suit up for OKC will be in the 2026-27 preseason. I'm not a medical expert, but a bunch of lower extremity surgeries this early in your career as a big man can be scary.Let's see if Sorber can finally put this all behind him. The good news is torn ACLs are fairly easy to rebound from. The biggest consequence of the injury is the missed time involved with it. It'll be incredibly important for him to stay healthy in his first real year in the NBA. You have a four-year runway to show something after you get drafted.Earn backup minutesRight now, the Thunder center rotation is pretty set. You could make a sound argument that they have the deepest big-man room in the league right now. Good luck finding a better trio than Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein and Jaylin Williams. All three scale from being All-NBA talent to starter level. That said, there should be opportunities for OKC's other centers to get playing time. Thanks to the nature of the NBA's marathon-esque regular season.That's where Sorber could thrive. He'll battle Aday Mara for the center spot minutes. Both were recent top-15 picks in the last two draft cycles. I think I'd give Sorber the edge right now. He has a year in the NBA under his belt. He's also less of a project than his 7-foot-3 teammate. On top of all that, he could gain more playing time due to his positional versatility. Won't be a shocker if the 20-year-old morphs into a jumbo-sized power forward.Be a plus defenderIn his Georgetown tape, Sorber graded out as a good defender. He averaged two blocks in his sole season there. If he wants to be a legitimate part of OKC's rotation, he must show some rim-protection skills. Even though he's a bit undersized as a traditional center, I think the 6-foot-9 player has enough size to compensate for that. He won't be pushed around in the paint like your traditional young player.One of Sorber's perks was his physicality. He has an NBA-ready frame at 250 pounds. In fact, he might need to shed some weight if anything. But that's a great build to be at if you're going to hover in the paint. He shouldn't be bullied off the floor in post-ups. That's a start for his defensive makeup. The Thunder clearly value that side of the court over offense. A former Nebraska football coach was recently named the archenemy of a Big 12 rival. ESPN named Tom Osborne as the archenemy of the Kansas State Wildcats.Osborne coached Nebraska from 1973 to 1997 and finished his coaching career with a 25-0 record against the Wildcats. He would finish with a 50-0 record against the Big 12's two Kansas schools, KSU and KU.The perfect record against Kansas State would make Osborne a logical choice for archemey. I would argue that Nebraska should have been listed overall; naming Osborne excludes the '99 matchup between the Wildcats and the Cornhuskers. No. 7 Nebraska (8-1) would host No. 5 Kansas State (9-0) with control of the Big 12 North on the line. The Huskers would fumble a school-record ten times (fumbles were an issue in '99) but still overwhelm the Wildcats and win 41-15. "But the Wildcats' success in the 1990s would have been even greater had they not constantly run into a Cornhusker roadblock manufactured by the legendary Osborne. From 1993 to 1999, K-State lost six games to Nebraska and eight to the rest of the nation. In 1997, it beat 11 opponents by an average score of 36-11 but fell 56-26 to the Huskers."Nebraska would move on to the Big 12 Championship Game, where they would get revenge on the Texas Longhorns for an early-season loss and win the conference title 22-6. These attacks against Ms. Ali are about her religion,” said Frank Rosenblatt, an attorney and professor at Mississippi Christian University School of Law, who has known Ali for years and spoke highly of her willingness to mentor young lawyers.In recent days, people including some Mississippi politicians attacked Ali online for what they claimed are radical beliefs – without any substantiation. They accused her of fabricating the judicial appointment and speculated she would institute Islamic law. Social media posts falsely claimed she was appointed as a judge in Ridgeland or in Lumberton. “Mississippi appoints first Yemeni Sharia Hijabi judge,” Amy Mekelburg of New York, founder and editor-in-chief of the Rise Align Ignite Reclaim Foundation, wrote in a post on X. Bases there have regularly come under attack since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Iran on Feb. 28.Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met with Adm. Brad Cooper, who leads the U.S. Central Command, on Wednesday. Al-Zaidi said in a statement afterward that he had affirmed Sept. 30 as the “fixed and final date for ending the military mission of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in Iraq and completing the departure of its forces.” A U.S. official confirmed that the U.S. expects to complete its pullout by Sept. 30, but declined to say how many troops remain in Iraq or where they would be redeployed.“The United States, Iraq and coalition partners have achieved tremendous success in defeating ISIS and now the Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga and other Iraqi Kurdistan Region security forces, will lead the fight against terrorists in Iraq,” the official said.Two Iraqi Kurdish officials said a drawdown of U.S. troops and military equipment from Erbil began about three weeks ago. On 105.3 The Fan, Voch Lombardi talked about what he saw from the Cowboys right tackle and it wasn’t a glowing review.Is it a five-alarm fire? It shouldn’t be because Byron Young is the Rams’ second-best pass rusher next to Garrett. However, a team’s second-best rusher can’t look like an All-Pro if the Cowboys are looking to replicate what they did last year on offense.Maybe in passing situations this year, the Cowboys keep Brevyn Spann-Ford tied to the hip pocket of Steele to chip the rusher and allow him to get an extra step on a defender. At the end of the day, Terence Steele might be the offensive line’s fifth-best lineman, and that’s okay. As long as the Cowboys aren’t naïve to that fact and can game plan accordingly on game day, it should be fine. Steele has a few more weeks to show Tuesday’s practice was just a blip.Is the Justin Barron hype real?Maybe it was the inspiration from Luke Kuechly being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame over the weekend that caused Justin Barron to have a breakout scrimmage. The second-year, undrafted linebacker had not one, not two, but three interceptions against the Rams. One of them came against the starters and Matthew Stafford.What does that mean moving forward? Well, Barron has been in a rotation at linebacker for all of camp with the second- and third-team defense. The top three backers on the team are pretty much set in DeMarvion Overshown, Dee Winters, and Jaishawn Barham. However, the fourth and potential fifth spots are open for grabs.Curtis Robinson, a veteran who was signed before camp, was getting reps with the second team as the Mike linebacker in Barham’s absence. Having a capable backup at that spot is too important for Christian Parker’s defense, so if Robinson is being trusted with those duties, it might give him the leg up in spot No. 4. That means Barron might be fighting with Shemar James for that final spot in the linebacker room. James has the draft capital invested in him as a second-year player who led the team in tackles as a rookie. However, James hasn’t shown up in practice the way Barron did on Tuesday.The biggest test will come in the preseason games, and both James and Barron will get every opportunity to play. On Tuesday, it was just another reason to buy into the hype around Dallas’ dynamic trio and how they can bring this offense to even greater heights than where they were last year.Brian Schottenheimer’s culture is growingTo close out practice, the Cowboys got together for some extra conditioning. Schottenheimer has been having Dallas run sprints at the end of practice, not for disciplinary reasons, but to get his guys ready for the long season and be the best-conditioned team in the NFL. Schottenheimer has also talked about his mission to build the best culture in American sports. On Tuesday, it was a blending of the two. Dak Prescott told the media that he and DeMarvion Overshown came together and got the offense and defense to do the extra conditioning. This wasn’t something Schottenheimer made the call on; it was a player-driven move. One could look at it and say it’s corny for Dallas to do it in front of the Rams as they’re walking off the field, but the bigger takeaway should be that Schottenheimer’s culture is now self-sustaining.Players taking the lead and doing this on their own shows everything he’s trying to build in Dallas is working and that the team is buying into it. If they didn’t do their usual conditioning after practice, or only half the team did it, it would raise some eyebrows. In this case, it showcases that things are coming together as a team in Dallas. The Washington Commanders training camp rolls on for Day 11 in Ashburn, VA. Today will be a little different, with the Miami Dolphins in town for a joint practice Wednesday morning and the first preseason game on Friday night.Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to reporters before the start of Wednesday’s practice. Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and linebacker Leo Chenal also held Q&As after practice, while other players were interviewed on the field.Quinn outlined the structure of the joint practice, which would entail relatively short periods with an emphasis on 1-on-1s, red-zone work, 7-on-7s, team drills, including drive-the-ball work, two-minute drills and you-call-it segments. He didn’t provide much information on who would play in Friday’s preseason contest against the Dolphins, preferring to hold that information until game day. It’s safe to say, though, that first-team guys who work a ton in the joint practices probably won’t play in the game. The 2028 recruiting cycle is heating up, and the Oregon Ducks were name-dropped in another notable race that has heated up this summer.Four-star offensive tackle Aden Owolabi told Rivals (subscription required) that the Ducks are an early leader in the race, alongside USC and Oklahoma. Owolabi, a 6-6 lineman from Danville, California, is ranked as the No. 52 overall recruit in the 2028 class, according to 247 Sports.Owolabi didn't have any offers earlier in the spring, but his recruitment amped up quickly this summer. Oregon hosted Owolabi for a camp and extended him an offer in June. But even in Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s New York, getting the wealthy to pay more isn’t playing out as smoothly as supporters hoped.What seemed at first like an easy idea — slapping a new tax on people who own luxury second homes in the Big Apple but live elsewhere most of the year — has instead created a lot of confusion in the city’s notoriously convoluted world of real estate arrangements.“It seems very simple but the more you dig into it, the more nuances you look at, the more complicated it gets,” said Gary Bingel, a state and local tax expert and partner at EisnerAmper, an accounting firm. It has also prompted pushback from both the city’s very wealthy and the merely moderately wealthy.President Donald Trump, whose gilded Manhattan penthouse could be subject to the tax since his primary residence is now in Florida, said he was looking into whether federal intervention could “avert this disaster, before it is too late.” A group of homeowners sued over the city’s rollout of the tax, arguing that officials had not done enough to figure out who would have to pay the tax and instead made it property owners’ responsibility. A judge temporarily paused the process this week, but the city moved to appeal, allowing the tax effort to continue until it’s sorted out in court.Securing a new tax on multimillion-dollar second homes, known as pied-à-terres, was an early win for Mamdani in his quest to raise taxes on the city’s highest earners to pay for his ambitious liberal agenda. For example, letting a distant family member stay at a second home without formal documentation, or if someone owns one or more properties and rents them out, but the tenants don’t have documentation that the unit is their primary residence.“Those situations make it difficult to prove people are in there,” said Mark Limardo, a partner at the law firm Herrick in Manhattan who focuses on taxes. “The concept is simple, but the ownership rules and the documentation rules have made it very complicated.” Outcry and litigationCity Hall, for its part, argues that it shouldn’t be difficult to provide proof that someone actually lives in the city and says that its finance department is experienced in parsing tangled webs of paperwork. Mamdani, no stranger to razzing wealthy people, debuted the tax with a video singling out hedge fund CEO Ken Griffin by standing outside a Manhattan penthouse the billionaire purchased for around $239 million. The clip sent Mamdani’s supporters swooning, but Griffin later said it was “frightening” that a public official would call attention to one of his homes, especially after the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in the same neighborhood.The city then published an expansive online list of property owners who it said could be subject to the tax, listing their names, addresses and property values. The list, which the city is legally required to publish, inflamed tensions between the mayor and the city’s wealthy, many of whom argued the roll amounted to doxing or public shaming.The administration has mailed notices to a much smaller group — about 17,000 properties — that it suspected would be subject to the tax, telling them they could apply for exemptions. Mamdani announced the mailers in a celebratory social media post that read: “If you have a second home in New York City worth more than $5M, check your mailbox when you’re back in the five boroughs — because you’ve got mail.”He later pushed back the deadline for exemption requests following public outcry from people who claimed to have received the letters in error or had trouble navigating the process. The source of the messages is unclear.In late July, some 72,000 migrants swam or climbed over the border breakwater to reach the Spanish city, fueled by economic hardship and by false rumors circulating online about an open border. Nearly all have since returned to Morocco, but the surge had political repercussions around Europe. At least 80 people died in the attempt, according to official tallies. Human rights groups have reported higher figures.Would-be migrants are now also being urged to cross into Melilla, another Spanish autonomous city on the northern coast of Africa. Twitch is going to train Amazon’s AI models on streamers’ content unless they deliberately go into their settings and opt out, potentially sweeping up a wealth of streamers who either don’t hear about the announcement or follow steps stop it.On Wednesday Twitch announced a new setting that lets streamers opt-out of the training. The announcement confirms rumors that have percolated over the last week: It is using streamers to train Amazon’s AI models. The new toggle says, "Allow your channel content to train generative AI content models at Amazon." All users are opted in by default. It's located at the bottom of users' security settings page. "If you opt-out and decide to not allow your channel content to train Generative AI content models, your streams, VODs, clips, stream chats, and pictures and text on your channel will not be used in future training of a model developed by Amazon whose purpose is to generate or synthesize text, audio, images, or video," Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, says in its new FAQ section about generative AI."Opting-out of training generative AI content models does not opt you out of all AI or machine learning uses at Twitch," Twitch's support page says. "For example, Twitch will still run AutoMod, which helps keep our community safe, but does not retain your data and use it to produce content. Twitch may also still use your data to run AI-supported features, like captions, which automatically generate captions for your Clips but does not retain your stream or your clips to train a model that can generate new content." Twitch is positioning this setting as a favor to users. "We've added a setting that lets you opt out of having your channel content used to train generative AI content models across Amazon," the platform posted on X Wednesday. In practice, Twitch makes this choice for users unless they know about the new setting and proactively turn it off. This was the case on my own Twitch account, and users on social media are reporting the same.Twitch executives have been talking about using streamers' content to train AI for years. In 2024, Twitch Chief Monetization Officer Mike Minton said Twitch has a “role to play” in training Amazon's generative AI models, adding that Twitch content was already being used “in a prototyping, not in any kind of production scale, capacity.”Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Twitch's publicly available press email repeatedly bounced.

Preseason awards keep piling up for a duo of Auburn football defenders. Pro Football Network recently released its 2026 college football preseason All-American teams, which included two Tigers. Linebacker Xavier Atkins earned first-team honors while Rayshawn Pleasant earned a third-team nod as a return specialist. Atkins is one of five SEC players on Pro Football Network's first-team All-American squad, joining Georgia's KJ Bolden, Florida's Bryce Thornton, Oklahoma's David Stone, and Texas' Collin Simmons. He was college football's highest-graded linebacker a season ago, earning an impact score of 90.4 from Pro Football Network after logging 60 solo tackles and nine sacks. He is also the highest-rated linebacker on the first team.Rayshawn Pleasant had an opportunity to prove his worth as a returner on a greater stage last season and took full advantage. He returned 17 kickoffs for an average of 24.2 yards last season, with one returned for a touchdown. He will have more eyes on him this season as a third-team preseason All-American and is the lone kick returner from the SEC to be featured. The SEC leads all of college football by having 22 representatives on Pro Football Network's preseason All-American teams. The Big 12 follows with 15 players, with the ACC and Big Ten each having 14. Both players have already garnered preseason respect by earning spots on preseason watchlists, including the Paul Hornung Award for Pleasant and the Bronko Nagurski Award for Atkins. The Democratic primary for a seat in Congress representing parts of the Miami area got ugly on Tuesday when voters received a campaign text message smearing the leading candidate with an accusation that he is HIV positive. Shevrin Jones, Florida’s first out Black state senator, is running to replace retiring Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL). Should Jones win the primary in the deep blue district, he’s all but assured of becoming Florida’s first gay member of Congress. The state’s primary election is next Tuesday. The blanket ban was abandoned in 2023 in favor of individualized screening. The same story was weaponized in Jones’ first run for Florida Senate in 2020. He won that race. The candidate condemned the underhanded tactics.” “What makes it so disgusting is that somebody decided to use my sexuality and HIV as weapons in a political campaign,” Jones told the Miami Herald. “There are people across South Florida who are actually living with HIV every single day, raising families, going to work, serving their communities, and living full lives. He added in one more detail, calling it “a crazy night,” before saying, “But it’s football, baby,” implying he was going to focus on the 2026 NFL season from now on. It’s not necessarily a surprise for Kelce to speak highly of his wedding day. That’s a common refrain from couples. In this instance, though, Kelce has experienced a lot of great days. He made the NFL, developed into a multi-year All Pro, won three Super Bowls and is on the way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Those are some pretty high highs. While Kelce could have easily walked away from football following his marriage, he decided to come back for at least one more year. Kelce’s stats have taken a step back in recent years, but he’s still maintained his Pro Bowl ceiling. The last time Kelce exceeded 1,000 receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns came back in 2022. One more resurgent year — from Kelce and the Chiefs’ offense — could lead to yet another Super Bowl ring for the newly-married Kelce. Given everything he’s accomplished so far, that likely wouldn’t rate as a top-5 day for the tight end, but it would be a pretty great to cap off a tremendous career.

The Denver Broncos released their first depth chart of 2026 on Wednesday, as is mandated by the NFL.The league requires clubs to publish a depth chart before their first preseason game, but many teams (including the Broncos) call it an "unofficial" depth chart, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, it's the first depth chart we have received from the team this summer, so it's worth discussing. Denver coach Sean Payton, as usual, has rookies at the back of the line as they have to prove themselves before climbing the depth chart. Let's jump into a few quick takeaways. Takeaways from Broncos' first depth chart 1. Jarrett Stidham is listed as QB2: Stidham, who has served as Denver's backup quarterback since 2023, is facing competition from Sam Ehlinger this summer. Ehlinger has gotten some reps with the second-team offense at training camp, but he's still listed as QB3 going into preseason. 2. Marvin Mims is WR3: Courtland Sutton and Jaylen Waddle are listed as the two starting wide receivers, and Marvin Mims is listed as a third starting receiver. Pat Bryant is listed as the backup behind Sutton, Troy Franklin is behind Mims and Lil'Jordan Humphrey is listed after Waddle. 3. John Franklin-Myers: Zach Allen is listed as one of the starting defensive ends and D.J. Jones is listed as the starting nose tackle. The starter listed in JFM's old DE spot is Malcolm Roach, with Eyioma Uwazurike listed as the backup behind him. Interestingly, Jordan Jackson is listed as Allen's backup with Sai'vion Jones a third-choice DE. 4. Jahdae Barron's still a backup: The team's first-round pick in 2025 hasn't managed to win a starting spot through two summers with the club. Riley Moss is listed as a starting outside cornerback across from Pat Surtain and Ja'Quan McMillian is the nickelback. Barron is listed as the primary backup for both spots, and he will play in dime situations this fall. 5. Broncos have many options to return kicks: Michael Bandy and Cameron Ross are listed as the backup punt returners behind Marvin Mims. Tyler Badie, RJ Harvey, Jaleel McLaughlin and Kolbe Katsis are listed as the backup kickoff returners. With Mims scheduled to become a free agent in 2027, the team might start planning ahead with returner tryouts this summer.Denver's set to play three preseason games this month before setting a 53-man roster. Cadillac F1 has named a new team principal as it prepares for the second half of the GM brand's inaugural Formula One season.Marcin Budkowski, a 49-year-old Polish-French engineer, will take the helm as Cadillac has struggled to gain consistency from the back of the field. Determined to be competitive in its first year, Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss said the leadership change was a planned transition from building a team to putting points on the board. Future challenges include developing the team’s 2027 car and preparing for hybrid powertrain changes that could include a V-8.Cadillac F1 is the only team yet to score a point at the midseason break. The world’s fastest and most popular motorsport returns Aug. 23 at Circuit Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix.“We're at this inflection point with the summer break,” said Towriss in a call with media Wednesday. “Cadillac has gone through this initial build phase . . . and now as we look at the development phase, there's a real opportunity here to build something new. We're delighted to welcome Martin to Cadillac Formula One (and) excited about what he brings to the table. This is the perfect time to make (a leadership) change as we go into the second half of our inaugural season (and) as we start to think about building the 2027 car.”Budkowski replaces Graham Lowden, who did yeoman’s work to get the F1 field’s 11th team to grid in just 10 months after Cadillac received approval to race in 2025.Budkowski joins the team with more than two decades of F1 management experience, including senior roles with Ferrari, McLaren and Formula One’s FIA organizing body. His most recent role was with Renault/Alpine — another relatively new F1 team that joined the grid in 2021 — where he led the team's transition as executive director and board member."From the beginning, our goal has not been simply to participate in Formula 1, but to build a next-generation team capable of competing at the very front,” said Towriss.After 11 grand prix, the team is stuck at the back of the field. Progress demanded more urgency when Aston Martin — which had been mired at the back of the fields with the two team Cadillacs — made big strides at the last Hungarian Grand Prix, leap-frogging Cadillac F1 into mid-field contention with a 12th and 13th place showing.Both Cadillac’s meanwhile, failed to finish, the latest in a concerning bout of unreliability to go with the team’s lack of pace.“Cadillac Formula 1 Team has an extraordinary foundation and ambition,” said Budkowski. “My focus will be on aligning our people, tools and information flow so the right decisions are made quickly, and the performance of the car improves every time we go racing.”Cadillac’s journey has been a trial by fire in a multi-billion-dollar circus that races 24 grand prix across five continents from March to December. Cadillac F1, headquartered in Indianapolis, has engineering operations in Silverstone, England, as well as engine development in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Pontiac.“It was great to get to this point, but it's really going to be that next phase of growth, this evolutionary step of, does the worm turn into a butterfly?” Towriss told Racer.com in an interview.The motorsports world has been impressed with Cadillac’s entry but the expectations for results are high. “It might seem harsh to describe any Formula One team as a worm, but if there is one at the moment, it’s Cadillac,” wrote Racer at the midseason break. “Not because of the pace of the car — that has actually been respectable — but because so much still remains undeveloped.”That development includes work already on the 2027 car, and beyond as F1 evolves a radical 50/50 hybrid, electric-V6 engine powertrain package in 2026 that has been panned by drivers.General Motors Co., which makes some of the world’s most powerful V-8 engines, has expressed an interest (along with other power unit makers) in the sport moving to the hallowed V-8s of yore.“The power unit manufacturers have responded to (the new regulations) with the best options that they had in front of us,” said Towriss of the controversial rules. “You certainly are seeing talks now about less electrification, V-8s for the future. I think GM has been on record that they're a fan of that direction.
