Primary voters in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont, and Connecticut went to the polls on Tuesday, delivering mixed results for progressive candidates, but strong showings for LGBTQ+ Democrats. The Progressive wave that has swept Democratic primaries in some states this year continued in Minnesota, where out Rep. Angie Craig lost her bid for the party’s nomination to replace retiring Sen. Tina Smith (D) to the state’s Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan (D). Scott Dibble (D) ran unopposed and will advance to November’s general election, in which he is also running unopposed. And as of Wednesday morning, gay state Senate candidate Sam Rosemark was leading fellow Democrat Teresa Miller in the primary race to represent the state’s 44th Senate district with 52% of the vote. In the race for Minnesota governor, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar coasted to victory in the Democratic primary, securing 90% of the vote to face Minnesota House speaker Lisa Demuth (R) in November. Vermont In Vermont, out U.S. Rep. Becca Balint (D) ran unopposed in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, while Republican voters delivered Gerald Malloy a decisive victory with 76% of the vote. With the primary in the rearview, Balin said in a statement that she is focused on the November election and will “keep fighting to lower costs, protect Social Security and Medicare, defend our freedoms, and make sure our voice is heard in Washington,” according to WCAX. And Democrats chose economist Amanda Janoo to face off against incumbent Gov. Phil Scott (R) in the general election’s gubernatorial race. Down ballot, out incumbent state Sens. Tanya Vyhovsky and Becca White and state Reps. Brian Cina, Will Greer, Emilie Kornheiser, and Saudia LaMont all won their primary races, while Democrats chose out state Rep. Monique Priestley to run against incumbent Republican state Sen. John Benson, and out former state Rep. Mike Rice to face off against incumbent Rep. Sandy Pinsonault (R) in a race for a seat Rice previously held from 2023 to 2025. Wisconsin In Wisconsin, incumbent U.S. Rep. Mark Pocon (D) handily defeated challenger Douglas Alexander, winning 88% of the vote. Pocon will go on to run unopposed in the race to retain his seat. Another out incumbent, state Sen. Mark Spreitzer (D), ran unopposed and will face Republican Scott Fleming in November. In the State Assembly Democratic Primary, out state Rep. Christian Phelps (D) ran unopposed to face off against Republican challenger Michael Ayala, while two first-time LGBTQ+ candidates also won their primaries. Ismael Luna defeated incumbent Sylvia Ortiz-Velez in the State Assembly District 8 Democratic primary race, while Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford triumphed over four other Democratic candidates in the race to represent State Assembly District 76. With District 76 solidly blue, Martinez-Rutherford is likely to become the first transgender person to be elected to the Wisconsin state Legislature, according to Isthmus. Democratic voters also chose bisexual former five-term state Assembly member JoCasta Zamarripa (D) as their pick to go up against MAGA aligned Republican nominee Jay Schroeder in the race for Wisconsin secretary of state this fall. However, voters bucked the party’s recent trend toward progressive candidates by choosing David Crowley as the Democratic nominee for governor. Crowley, a moderate, eked out a close victory over democratic socialist candidate Francesca Hong. Connecticut In Connecticut, incumbent Gov. Ned Lamont (D) beat primary challenger Josh Elliott, the deputy speaker of the state House, to face state Sen. Ruan Fazio (R) in the general. The unclassified assessment, obtained by The Associated Press, was sent to Congress as part of an annual report on civilian casualties and reported earlier by NBC News. A Pentagon official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, said the department will submit the report in the coming months but had nothing more to announce. The Pentagon review focused on three airstrikes in April 2025 that were launched during the U.S. campaign against the Houthis. The militants were attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea, a crucial global trade route that leads to the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean, as well as Israel. Those strikes targeted hostile forces in or near Yemen’s rebel-held capital city of Sanaa as well as the Ras Isa port, the report said. A total of 153 civilians were killed and 243 were injured. The strike on the port was the most deadly, killing 80 people and injuring 171 others. It sent massive fireballs billowing skyward and turned tanker trucks into burning wrecks. The Houthis aired graphic footage of the aftermath on their al-Masirah satellite news channel, showing corpses strewn about the port. (AP) — A new study suggests a protective vest tested on a manikin during NASA’s first Artemis moonshot could drastically cut the radiation exposure of lunar astronauts during severe solar storms.Scientists reported Wednesday on the radiation-shielding vest worn around the moon by a female test dummy in 2022. No one was aboard that Artemis I debut flight, which paved the way for humanity’s long-awaited return to the moon in April by a flyby crew of four.Radiation remains one of the biggest threats to astronauts as NASA works toward a moon base. Shielding garments could keep lunar crews safe when solar storms strike and even allow them to venture beyond their shelters if necessary, the U.S., German and Israeli team reported in the journal Science Advances.A version of the vest was previously tested on the International Space Station. It didn’t travel with the Artemis II astronauts since it was a short 10-day mission with limited room, but may wind up a carry-on for future moon crews. Meant to be worn only during high-radiation and potentially cancer-causing solar events, the vest covers the most vulnerable human organs and tissue: lungs, stomach, bone marrow, breasts and ovaries. Women are believed to be especially susceptible to radiation-induced cancer. Artemis I carried two female manikins that spent nearly a month flying to the moon and back. Dubbed Zohar and Helga, the manikins — each a life-size 3 feet from head to lower torso — were strapped into the passenger seats of NASA’s Orion capsule. Zohar wore the 57-pound (26-kilogram) AstroRad vest, developed by the U.S.-Israeli startup StemRad and Lockheed Martin. The companies had already tested a prototype on the space station for comfort and function, modeling it after gear worn by nuclear disaster teams. Read More Helga flew vest-less, but like its companion contained thousands of radiation sensors.The study’s lead author, StemRad’s Jordan Houri, called it “the largest experiment ever conducted to determine astronaut radiation exposure beyond low-Earth orbit.” NASA, the German Aerospace Center and the Israel Space Agency provided the funding. Radiation exposure is much less for space travelers closer to home, thanks to Earth’s protective atmosphere and magnetic field. Artemis I encountered no major solar outbursts. But based on measurements gathered as NASA’s Orion capsule zipped through the inner Van Allen radiation belt, Houri and his team simulated how much protection the vest would provide during extreme solar particle events like those in 1972 and 1989 that detonated magnetic sea mines and collapsed a power grid.Lucky for NASA, the 1972 solar outburst occurred in between that year’s two moon landings, keeping the crews of Apollo 16 and 17 safe from potentially lethal radiation exposure.The latest findings showed the vest could reduce an astronaut’s radiation dose by about 60% in a solar storm as fierce as the one in 1972 and by nearly 40% in a calamity mirroring 1989. That’s equivalent to 193 days and 131 days, respectively, of unnecessary deep space radiation exposure, the scientists noted.While none of the Apollo moonshots exceeded two weeks, the moon-base stays envisioned by NASA will likely last weeks, if not months, driving up the risk of enduring a dangerous solar storm. Mars expeditions will last even longer — months, years and possibly entire lifetimes if SpaceX CEO Elon Musk achieves his goal of building a city on the red planet. The scientists are using their observations to trim more weight from the vest without sacrificing protection. Overall, talk coming out of Vikings' training camp is that the offense opens up a bit more with Kyler under center, per Boone. With McCarthy, the Vikings were trying to hide him within the offense a bit — not ideal for Jefferson.The fantasy community cares about Jefferson the most among skill position players in Minnesota and Boone believes this move to Murray will be good for the Pro Bowl wide receiver. Harmon isn't as excited about the move initially. McCarthy was apparently making a push during camp and looked better, but it's still Murray who is the guy. Harmon doesn't feel differently about Murray as a fantasy QB; he has him ranked QB15 as of now. Harmon is second-guessing himself on Jefferson. He wasn't worried so much two months ago but now thinks there could be a scenario where we see McCarthy come in late in the season, during the fantasy playoffs. So Harmon has Jefferson down at 15th overall in his consensus half-PPR rankings, with RBs like James Cook, Saquan Barkley, Ashton Jeanty, Derrick Henry and Kenneth Walker III ahead of Jefferson. The analyst is also skeptical of Murray overall, which Boone believes is fair. While Murray may not come in and be the end-all-be-all of QBs, Boone feels the Vikings just need him to come in and provide "average QB play."

Roeder, an extension specialist at Montana State University, tends to the college-owned flock at an old off-campus cavalry barracks called the Fort Ellis Research and Teaching Farm. The flock exists to give agriculture students hands-on experience. That includes learning how to raise high-quality sheep for sales like the one in Miles City that Roeder plans to take six animals to this September.“You’re taking your best of your best,” Roeder said. Roeder is on a mission to revitalize the regional wool industry. He manages the university’s new Wool Lab, a facility dedicated to making wool production more efficient and more profitable for Montana’s sheep ranchers. He has spent a lifetime watching synthetic fiber undermine demand for wool. Now, Roeder hopes the new facility can show students “why the wool industry is still important and relevant.” “I’m a little gray-haired. Finding this next generation was part of the investment in this lab, to be able to teach that next generation so they could innovate,” Roeder said.The new building opened in July. The on-campus facility also contains the Montana Department of Livestock’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and the Montana Department of Agriculture’s Analytical Lab. The Wool Lab cost about $10 million, funded by a combination of legislative appropriations and donations from private industry. The Wool Lab’s previous home, located about a mile from the new one, dates back to the 1940s. The Montana Legislature first approved funding for that lab in 1945, when the industry was mid-boom after years of substantial government subsidies for the wool industry during World War II. In the mid-twentieth century, wool labs were common at land-grant universities. But today, the only similar facility outside of Bozeman is at Texas A&M, according to Roeder. Synthetic fabric has overwhelmed the market share that wool once ruled, according to Roeder. “It’s really only been over the last 70 or 80 years that synthetics have come in. And they’ve completely dominated the whole fabric manufacturing system,” Roeder said.So Roeder has aligned himself with the natural-fiber industry, which includes cotton and wool-based clothes. He decries synthetic clothing’s environmental cost — it’s made from fossil fuels, releases microplastics when washed and doesn’t biodegrade — and describes natural products as more comfortable to wear. “I’m not against plastic or the oil industry, because I have a lot of friends in that industry, but maybe we shouldn’t be making $5 plastic shirts and importing them from China,” Roeder said. Roeder wants the Wool Lab to innovate cheaper ways to produce and process wool. Montana ranchers help steer the direction of the lab’s research. Every two years, 25 sheep producers come to campus to grade Roeder’s work.Those assessments aren’t public. But Stefanie Leach, executive assistant with the Montana Wool Growers Association, which wrote a $100,000 check for the new lab, told Montana Free Press the facility is doing necessary work. “Without the research there, our industry stays stagnant. Without them doing research, we have no new innovation,” Leach said. One way the lab hopes to boost the regional market is by helping ranchers breed animals that produce wool that can be worn comfortably next to human skin. That requires that wool fibers be less than 30 microns (0.001 inches) thick. Next-to-skin wool doesn’t itch. And most of the country’s domestic supply of next-to-skin wool comes from Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana, according to Leach. Becky Weed, a sheep rancher near Belgrade who utilized Wool Lab resources during her early days in the business in the 1980s, said modern ranchers don’t just need help producing a particular grade of wool — they need help processing and selling it. She said the market was different when she got into the wool industry four decades ago. “The mainstream wool growers at that time weren’t paying as close attention to what happened to their fiber, who was using it, who was marketing it, and how much they were getting paid for their wool,” Weed said. But that changed as the industry shrank. Now, sheep ranchers have to be more intentional, Weed said. She said she’s glad the Wool Lab is getting “a shot in the arm” and praised Roeder as “a real leader amongst the wool growers.” Roeder said conditions for wool producers are improving — the commodity price has doubled in the last two years and is currently at a six-year high — but the industry still suffers from years of economic neglect.“We have not had enough profitability in the industry for so long, there’s been no investment in facilities, structures, new barns and handling equipment. There just wasn’t the revenue to do it,” Roeder said. As Roeder herded and handled sheep at the Fort Ellis farm, he wore a hat decorated with an American flag in the shape of a lamb, a token of thanks from the Teton County Fair, where he’s spent more than a decade helping 4H participants raise and show their sheep and goats. His belt buckle, emblazoned with “Texas A&M,” commemorates his 1993 championship in intercollegiate wool judging. He said he’s confident the wool industry isn’t going anywhere, and that a next generation of Montana sheep ranchers has plenty to learn, and to teach.“Don’t ever put your fingers inside,” Roeder said, dropping his hand between a sheep and the pen’s metal railing. (AP) — A small Kansas town has agreed to pay $850,000 to a former reporter at its weekly newspaper to end her federal lawsuit over a police raid of the paper’s offices in 2023 that ignited a national furor over press freedom.Now-retired Marion County Record reporter Phyllis Zorn said in her lawsuit that the raid violated press freedoms and protections from unreasonable law enforcement searches guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. She also said it almost immediately led to health problems, causing the return of potentially life-threatening seizures that had been controlled for years with medication.Zorn’s attorney, Randy Rathbun, and an attorney for the city Marion, Jennifer Hill, filed a joint statement Tuesday — the third anniversary of the raid on the newspaper’s offices — that Zorn’s lawsuit was being dismissed. It was among the lawsuits filed in federal court against local officials over the raids of the newspaper’s offices, the home of Publisher Eric Meyer and the home of a former City Council member. Rathbun did not immediately return a phone message Wednesday seeking comment. Another attorney for the city, Scott Ufford, declined to comment about the settlement but confirmed the amount. Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody said he was investigating whether the paper had committed identity theft or other crimes in accessing a local restaurant owner’s state driving record, but authorities who examined the raids said they were not legally justified. Meyer, Zorn and others saw the raids as retaliation for hard-hitting local coverage and efforts to gather information about Cody’s past in law enforcement. (Christiana Botic/Verite News and Catchlight Local/Report for America via AP)2026-08-12T19:06:52Z Less than two years after opening, a liquefied natural gas terminal near New Orleans is seeking a multi-billion-dollar expansion under a new Trump administration “emergency” permitting process that shortens environmental review and may weaken protections for surrounding wetlands and waterways.The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted Plaquemines LNG, on the Mississippi River between Myrtle Grove and Port Sulphur, fast-tracked permitting under a “ national energy emergency ” President Donald Trump declared last year.The agency cut the public comment period from the typical 30 days to just 10, ending July 2, and is expected to move quickly to approve the expansion, which would allow the terminal to more than double in size, growing from nearly 590 acres to about 1,220. That would make the facility the largest LNG export terminal in North America, according to its owner, Virginia-based Venture Global. Environmentalists warn that the terminal’s expedited review could reduce scrutiny of dredging, in-water construction, and the filling of marshlands in a region suffering from rapid land loss. By the Army Corps’ estimates, the $18 billion expansion could damage up to 470 acres of wetlands and water bottoms in central Plaquemines Parish, about 25 miles south of New Orleans. “Louisiana is already dealing with a coastal crisis,” said Matt Rota, a senior policy director with Healthy Gulf, a New Orleans-based environmental group. “Destroying 400 more acres in Plaquemines Parish is ridiculous. I don’t know how many acres they have left, but it’s not that much.” Plaquemines has lost more than 250 square miles of land over the past 60 years to subsidence, sea level rise and erosion. The state’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority projects another 300 square miles — about half the parish’s remaining land — could disappear over the next 50 years. Much of Louisiana’s coast faces a similar threat. Since the early 1900s, nearly 2,000 square miles of the state have vanished, an area roughly the size of Delaware. Hundreds of other energy projects could receive expedited permitting under the emergency declaration, which Trump said was necessary to maintain a “reliable, diversified, and affordable supply of energy” for the U.S. military and economy. More than 30 LNG export terminals are under construction or proposed in the U.S. Plaquemines LNG is the newest of four terminals in Louisiana, including Sabine Pass, Cameron LNG and Calcasieu Pass LNG, which is also owned by Venture. LNG is natural gas chilled into a liquid for easier shipment overseas, where demand has surged as countries seek alternatives to coal and Russian gas. The industry’s critics say shipping natural gas abroad conflicts with Trump’s stated rationale for declaring an energy emergency: boosting what he described as the “nation’s inadequate energy supply.”“It’s hard to see how expanding an LNG export terminal is going to help domestic energy independence and reliability,” said Griffin Bird, a research analyst with the Environmental Integrity Project. “This has nothing to do with energy security,” Rota said. “It sacrifices the Louisiana coast to enrich billionaires.”Of the 833 billion cubic feet of gas exported from Plaquemines LNG last year, most went to Europe, with Germany receiving the largest share, at 19%, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The terminal is one of Louisiana’s largest industrial facilities, with 1.3 miles of river frontage, three ship berths, two gas-fired power plants, and nearly 30 miles of natural gas pipeline. It’s also one of the state’s biggest polluters. Plaquemines LNG is permitted to release about 8.1 million tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases per year, according to company records. That’s equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 1.7 million gas-powered vehicles.The only industrial facility in Louisiana that emits more than Plaquemines LNG is CF Industries, an ammonia producer in Donaldsonville that released about 10.4 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2023, the latest year available in the Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse gas emissions inventory. Those emissions, along with the carbon dioxide released when the LNG is burned for energy overseas, contribute to climate change, which is accelerating sea level rise and intensifying the storms that drive land loss in Plaquemines, Rota said. “Burning more natural gas means we lose Plaquemines Parish even faster,” he said. The terminal’s expansion would increase its production capacity from about 1.4 trillion cubic feet of gas per year to around 2.3 trillion. It’s unclear how the expansion will affect emissions, but federal filings indicate the larger facility could produce at least 9 million tons of greenhouse gases per year. Venture plans to use carbon capture and sequestration technology to inject a portion of the terminal’s carbon dioxide underground. Some Louisiana leaders welcome the expansion, saying it will spur economic activity and create jobs. The director, actor and Hollywood luminary Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were stabbed to death in their home in the upscale Brentwood section of Los Angeles on Dec. 14. Nick Reiner was arrested hours later and charged two days later. The grand jury indictment is a major step toward trial and allows prosecutors to skip California’s preliminary hearing process, where evidence is publicly aired. “This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement. “We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”The unsealed indictment reveals few new details in a case that has been shrouded in secrecy. But the lying in wait allegation along with other circumstances mean Reiner is eligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors say they haven’t decided whether to seek it. Unfortunately, college football, like any sport, is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league. That’s especially true at Ohio State.All Ryan Day has done, for the most part, is win. Five College Football Playoff berths in seven years. New Year’s Six bowls in the two years the Buckeyes didn’t make the Playoff. Oh, and a national championship in 2024. Not to mention a pair of Big Ten Championships.Coming off the disappointing end to the 2025 season, where the Buckeyes were ousted in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, less than four weeks after losing to Indiana in the Big Ten Championship, there is pressure on Ryan Day to get the Buckeyes back to the top of the College Football world. But how much pressure should there be? Not any more than there already is as the head coach at Ohio State. He’s led the Buckeyes to the national championship before, and that gives him vindication.Day has an .872 winning percentage in seven seasons as the Buckeyes’ head coach. I don’t care what school he’s the head coach for, winning 87 percent of your games in your first seven seasons as head coach is pretty darn impressive. Especially at a school like Ohio State, where literally every game is highly scrutinized. Heck, every play of every game is dissected. That’s pressure in and of itself.Think about this, too. The Buckeyes’ postseason last year was marked by offensive coordinator Brian Hartline taking the head coaching job at USF. Clearly, that was a distraction. Even if Day tried to downplay it, it was a distraction. Julian Sayin looked indecisive in the Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes scored just 24 combined points in those two games, with an offense that looked out of sync.Before the Big Ten Championship, the Buckeyes had won 16 straight games. In that stretch, the Buckeyes beat Tennessee, Oregon, Texas twice, Notre Dame, and Michigan. The win in Ann Arbor last year was business-like. It felt like there was no stopping Ryan Day and the Buckeyes after that game. The whole perception about Day felt like it had changed.With all the chaos in college football, Day is the steadying force. Look at all the teams that have new head coaches this season. Penn State and Michigan are two notable programs in the Big Ten alone. LSU has a new head coach. Those programs are all in transition to various degrees. Not the Buckeyes. Ryan Day is locked and loaded, and so too are the Buckeyes, going into the 2026 season.Even with last year’s disappointment, Day is still among the best head coaches in all of college football. Winning a national championship changes the perception of a head coach. It was that way with head coaches like Kirby Smart, Jim Harbaugh, Dabo Swinney, and now, Ryan Day. To think there should be a lot of pressure on him going into this season isn’t fair. Yes, there is automatic pressure applied when you’re the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. But any more pressure on Day is unfair. He led Ohio State to a national championship in this new era of college football. A steadying force during a time that could have broken the program. Day delivers, and he is poised to do so again in 2026.

No, Rory McIlroy isn't going to lose his PGA Tour status. At least, that's what he's banking on as the 2026 campaign wraps up.McIlroy is in the field at this week's FedEx St. Jude Championship, which kicks off the three-leg FedExCup Playoffs. McIlroy is already locked in for the final two events, too, which will bring him to 14 total Tour stops on the year. That, however, is one shy of the minimum amount required for McIlroy to maintain dual membership with the Tour and the DP World Tour. In theory, the Tour could take his status away in 2027. But so far, McIlroy said he has had "productive" discussions with new PGA Tour commissioner and CEO Brian Rolapp about the issue. "Brian and I have been in constant dialogue, basically since he took the job last year," McIlroy said from TPC Southwind on Wednesday, via the Golf Channel. "I think we've built up a really good relationship and we've had a couple of conversations last week about what I can do with the Tour going forward to fulfill the obligation to keep my membership."Even if McIlroy didn't find a way to work with the Tour, it's hard to imagine the league would do anything in this situation. McIlroy is the No. 2 golfer in the world, behind only Scottie Scheffler, and is undoubtedly among the biggest names in the sport. He's fresh off back-to-back Masters wins and has won 30 times on Tour in his career.Oh, and he was the face of the Tour amid its fight with LIV Golf in recent years. Having McIlroy playing on Tour is undoubtedly a massive benefit for the league. Rolapp also has a clause in the Tour's tournament regulations to allow exceptions to the 15-tournament rule "for medical reasons or other extraordinary circumstances." According to ESPN's Mark Schlabach, a decision hasn't been made in McIlroy's case as the season is still ongoing.McIlroy has played 11 times so far on Tour this season, most recently at the British Open when he finished T40 at Royal Birkdale. He will play in six other DP World Tour events after the Tour Championship, too, including at the Irish Open, the BMW PGA Championship, the Australian Open and the DP World Tour Championship. Finding a time to play in a FedExCup Fall event to get to 15 Tour events feels unlikely. "We've had productive conversations, we're figuring it out and it will all be fine. It will be a little bit of work between us," McIlroy said. "Especially with the strategic alliance with the DP World Tour I sort of pride myself on being a global player. I've got a lot of golf left this year after these events."McIlroy has four top-10 finishes in his 11 starts on Tour this season, most recently with a T7 run at the Genesis Scottish Open. He's entering the playoffs at No. 12 in the Tour's standings, roughly 2,400 points behind first-place Scottie Scheffler. The top 50 after this week's event in Memphis will advance to the BMW Championship next week in St. Louis. "This is a good week," McIlroy said. "Obviously I want to play well, but it's also a good week to just see where my game is at, do a lot of practice, or as much as I can in the heat."I think it's important to be here. He jokingly shut the door before opening it again, with the couple sharing a fun exchange.Shelton and Rodman have been publicly dating since March 2025.
