رابطAPNEWS.COMSeahawks and CB Terrion Arnold, who faces felony charges, are working on a deal, AP source saysDetroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold reacts to a play against the Green Bay Packers during an NFL football game in Detroit, Nov. 27, 2025. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya, File)2026-08-14T00:00:30Z RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks and cornerback Terrion Arnold are working on a contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the contract hasn’t been finalized.Arnold, 23, is facing eight felony charges stemming from allegations he orchestrated the abduction and beating of three men in February. He became a free agent in June, when the Detroit Lions released him a few days after the kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy charges were levied.Prosecutors in Florida said Arnold arranged for the men to be pistol-whipped after he wrongly suspected them of stealing $100,000 in cash and luxury goods from him. Police called him the “primary conspirator” in the Feb. 4 attack, and a judge set his bail at $1 million.Defense attorney R. Timothy Jansen said in Hillsborough County court earlier this summer that Arnold is “absolutely denying these allegations.” Denise White, the CEO of EAG Sports Management, an agency that represents Arnold, said there’s “no credible evidence” against him, only accounts from others who may have an incentive to get a lighter sentence. Arnold has played in 25 NFL games, including playoffs, since the Lions took him with the 24th pick of the 2024 draft out of Florida State. The Seahawks hosted Arnold on Sunday, two days before he visited the New York Giants.Coach Mike Macdonald said Monday that Arnold’s visit and tryout went well. “It’s a situation where there’s other things surrounding it as well, we’re aware of that,” Macdonald said. “We’re working through the situation right now. I enjoyed meeting him and he enjoyed being here. We’ll see how it goes.” Read More The Seahawks fielded arguably the NFL’s best defense last season. No team allowed fewer points per game (17.2), and Seattle finished in the top seven in the league in sacks and interceptions.Arnold should add depth to a secondary that lost cornerback Riq Woolen to free agency and has been without second-year safety Nick Emannwori, who had offseason ankle surgery, during training camp. Macdonald said the Seahawks would look into Arnold’s background.“I trust our people to make the best decision for us,” Macdonald said. “We also think this is a great place to come work, too, and that people can be the best version of themselves if given the opportunity. Works both ways.”___See AP’s full NFL coverage here 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 8 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

رابطAPNEWS.COMTrump orders the Navy to return to an older system of launching jets off aircraft carriersDefense Secretary Pete Hegseth, from right, speaks as President Donald Trump and Jennifer Hegseth listen during a meeting about military families, in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2026-08-14T00:01:55Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is ordering the U.S. Navy to remove the advanced system used to launch fighter jets from its newest type of aircraft carrier and return to using older steam catapults that he has long said he prefers, according to a directive issued Thursday. The new mandate would likely cost billions of dollars and revert the Navy’s most advanced ships to a system that takes more sailors to operate and is more difficult to maintain. The memo directs the Pentagon and the Navy to present Trump with plans to remove the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, also known as EMALS, within two months. It also says the Ford-class carrier’s electromagnetic weapons elevators should be replaced. The move comes after years of Trump railing against the new, magnetically powered catapult system that shoots fighter jets off the deck of the carriers. It also comes at a time when the U.S. military is trying to find funding from Congress for all its desired equipment and as the Navy is struggling to fill its ships with enough sailors. Trump’s ire with the new technology goes back to at least 2017 in his first term, when he claimed the new system is “not good” and “doesn’t have the power” of the older, steam systems in an interview with Time magazine.“You’re going to goddamned steam,” Trump said at the time. The topic has frequently come up since then at rallies and other events. While Trump is looking to roll back the latest technology, the newest Chinese aircraft carriers employ electromagnetic catapults and France said it plans to use the system on its new carrier. Read More Trump’s memo directs the fourth Ford-class carrier, the USS Doris Miller, to be the first ship to include the new changes. That will leave the USS Gerald R. Ford, as well as the forthcoming USS John F. Kennedy and USS Enterprise, untouched. However, redesigning an already finalized ship for such a major system change will not be an easy task.General Atomics, the company that makes EMALS, told The Associated Press in an email that the decision not to proceed with the system on the USS Doris Miller “warrants careful reconsideration.” Trump’s memo that mandates the removal of the system also noted that one of the issues facing shipbuilding is the Navy’s constant design changes, “which have resulted in cost growth, delays, and cancellations.”General Atomics said the work on the Doris Miller’s catapults and arresting gear was already halfway complete and said “changing course now would introduce significant cost, schedule, and integration risks.”The move comes as Congress will weigh the necessary budget and funding bills that the Trump administration has said they need to fund the Pentagon and the Iran war.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth estimated last month that the war’s cost grew to $37.5 billion as Republicans prepared a $95 billion package to fund the military, along with other White House priorities.Hegseth said the supplemental war funding is an “urgent, necessary” injection of money, and with Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget a generational investment in the military. The House narrowly adopted both but the Senate still must act when it returns in September. Some of the key advantages to the electromagnetic system are its ability to launch aircraft at faster speeds while being easier to maintain, requiring fewer sailors to operate and using less space aboard the ship.EMALS aboard the USS Ford cut the number of sailors need to operate the catapults from about a dozen to two.Reverting to a system that requires more people to operate it comes as the Navy has struggled to translate its recruiting successes in the past year to actually filling jobs on warships. At the start of the year, the Navy had about 20,000 unfilled posts across the fleet. In February, the Navy touted the system in a press release that said it allowed the USS Ford to launch and recover aircraft at a higher rate than its predecessor, the Nimitz-class ships.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 63 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBrewers dealing with another injury during slump as Brice Turang is outLOS ANGELES – With Cooper Pratt already on the shelf, the Milwaukee Brewers double-play combination took another hit before a critical series.Second baseman Brice Turang was out of the lineup for the series opener Aug. 13 against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium while dealing with left knee pain. Turang is day-to-day, manager Pat Murphy indicated, after an MRI didn't reveal any serious damage. Turang will get a second opinion on the imaging. "Been nursing this knee pain and just got to a point where he really needs to take some time," Murphy said. "We don't know how long. They're saying day-to-day. He had an MRI today. The MRI did not reveal so far anything we're too worried about. Obviously, he can't play tonight."Turang, who is batting .268 with a .810 OPS and leads the team in runs and RBI, isn't yet ruled out for the four-game series between the top two teams in the National League. Pratt, the Brewers starting shortstop, is on the 10-day injured list while Jackson Chourio, batting leadoff in the opener, continues to play through a left thumb injury. It's not an optimal situation coming off a three-game sweep in San Diego. "A lot of things are hard right now but guess what?" Murphy said. With the starting middle infield duo out, the Brewers got creative with their lineup against the Dodgers in the opener, playing Gary Sánchez at first base and Andrew Vaughn at third. "Gary's a baseball player and we just keep putting baseball players out there," Murphy said. "Vaughn at third, Gary at first is not ideal. It doesn't show up on the metrics as this is going to be a great defensive team out there. Gary's a baseball player and his bat, how do we keep him out of there? And how do you get William [Contreras] going if you don't put him in there? That's the dilemma I'm in. With the middle infield out, it's tough." SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAnalysis: Fox News ran 206 WNBA segments this summerCredit: Fox NewsOn June 24, the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury met for the second time in three days. Both games fed Fox News’ WNBA content machine.During the Fever’s win on June 22, tensions flared, resulting in one chaotic scrum, one ejection, one Sophie Cunningham meme, and five technical fouls.During the Mercury’s win on June 24, Phoenix All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas’ fist made contact with Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark’s throat. The WNBA retroactively levied a one-game suspension against Thomas for “recklessly making contact with her fist to the throat area” of Clark.Thomas later disclosed that she and her teammates received death threats and racial slurs. Fever head coach Stephanie White and Clark condemned the vitriolic aftermath, as did several other WNBA figures. Instead of heeding that directive, however, Fox News used the Fever and Mercury’s two-game set as a launching pad into a summer of antagonistic WNBA coverage.Media Matters for America has published a report showing that Fox News has “devoted at least 13 hours and 34 minutes,” including at least 206 segments, to WNBA programming since June 25.Up until Cunningham’s comments about barring transgender athletes from women’s sports for an ESPN profile published July 21, Fox News almost exclusively discussed “hard fouls” in the WNBA. But from July 21 through Aug. 11, the network’s segments have been disproportionately dedicated to anti-trans rhetoric with the WNBA as the backdrop.Credit: Media Matters for AmericaFox News’ WNBA segments have sprawled across The Five, The Ingraham Angle, Hannity, and Gutfeld!. But while Laura Ingraham, who apparently has granted selective immunity from her 2018 “shut up and dribble” mandate, seems enthusiastic to diagram hard fouls, not every Fox News host is a willing participant in this peculiar pivot.“This is week three of The Five covering the WNBA, and I have to say, I’m done,” Jesse Watters said on The Five on Aug. 3. “I hate the WNBA. I don’t mind women’s basketball. My girls play basketball, but I don’t want to cover women’s basketball. I don’t want to be a WNBA analyst. We get paid to have an opinion about everything. And this is something I don’t care about.”At least Watters said the quiet part out loud.Earlier this week, Fever head coach Stephanie White delivered a powerful statement in the face of even more scrutiny over how she handled DiJonai Carrington’s Flagrant 2 foul on Cunningham.“The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that’s trying to hijack our league will not win,” White said, in part. “It won’t win. We are united, we are connected, [and] we will not be divided. Every day, these women put their ass on the line. Every day. When they go low, we go high. Love will win! Grace will win! Humility will win! And kindness will win! I stand by them. I will always stand by them. Everybody else can go to hell.”Will conservative media listen and leave the league alone? History, and the fact that their coverage has never been rooted in WNBA reality, suggests otherwise. Even if there isn’t any controversy to mine, the Fox News powers that be will find one. They already have in Enes Kanter and Royce White’s disingenuous antics. The post Analysis: Fox News ran 206 WNBA segments this summer appeared first on Awful Announcing.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 45 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKevin Durant congratulates 'inspiring' Russell Westbrook on retirementKevin Durant is a future Hall of Famer himself, but upon hearing the news of Russell Westbrook's retirement, he called his former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate "inspiring."A day after Westbrook announced he's bidding adieu to basketball, Durant took to X on Thursday, Aug. 13 to write a heartfelt post to the point guard, who played 18 seasons in the NBA. The duo spent eight years together early in their NBA careers. They took Oklahoma City, which moved from Seattle the summer Westbrook joined the team, to the playoffs five times. They reached the Finals in the 2011-12 season, where they lost to LeBron James and the Miami Heat.In his reflection, Durant gave insight into who Westbrook is as a player and person."A lot of people looked at the emotions on the court and thought Russ was loud, nah to me, he was quiet and methodical," Durant said. "He lead by example and once the lights were bright, he let everything out and experienced pure freedom. It was inspiring as his teammate and everywhere I went, I seen it inspire people from all walks of life, crazy thing is, he didn’t say much, he just showed up."Durant is a 16-time All-Star and won two championships after leaving the Thunder in 2016. Westbrook was named an All-Star nine times and became the NBA's triple-double king upon his own departure from Oklahoma City in 2019. They played together during the 2016 NBA All-Star Game when Westbrook was named MVP.The Slim Reaper recalled how he and the former UCLA standout developed a friendship. He said they encouraged each other through the highs and lows of their careers and the everyday moments, "bus rides, plane rides, card games, jokes and arguments," and concluded, "the whole thing, memorable!!"Durant shared a story of when he asked Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks if it's harder to work out before or after practice because he saw Westbrook coming in to train before. When he remembered Cheeks saying, "coming in before practice is probably harder," Durant took on the challenge that his point guard set the tone with, saying "since then, it’s been my routine."Durant reflected on the exclusive nature of being an NBA player and the understanding he and Westbrook have for each other and the game. He expressed hope that his teammate will continue his legacy, calling his career "iconic.""This basketball life is sacred to us as professionals, what we put into that court means everything," he said. "Some of us wish we could go back and do things with a little more intent and some can just wipe their hands and be satisfied with the time spent. Who u gonna be? We know what zero was on … keep inspiring in the next phase of life champ. ... much love and Congratulations on a iconic career."This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Kevin Durant congratulates 'inspiring' Russell Westbrook on retirement0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 14 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDespite not being the starter, J.J. McCarthy does not want to leaveThe Vikings quarterback battle did not even make it to the first preseason game. After weeks of build-up, OTAs, and training camp practices, we have now arrived at a decision on the starter by head coach Kevin O'Connell. On Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback for the start of the regular season. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news of the decision. With Murray being named the starter, that leaves McCarthy as the odd man out. But if you ask McCarthy, he seems to be happy in Minnesota despite the team going with Murray. He told the media, "This is the place I want to be. And I love every single person in this building. I love the state. I love the fan base and I'm going to continue to just do whatever I can for this team and this organization."This was a veteran answer from a young quarterback. For McCarthy, wanting to stay in Minnesota may be his best bet to get his career back on track despite this temporary setback. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWill Shohei Ohtani pitch soon? Dave Roberts provides update on Dodgers starLOS ANGELES — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided some encouraging news, if only a glimmer of it, regarding Shohei Ohtani’s ability to resume pitching.“He’s playing catch, potentially going to throw a bullpen soon,’’ Roberts told the media before the Dodgers opened their four-game homestand with the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, Aug. 13.Though the Dodgers have indicated they expect Ohtani to pitch again this season, the team has offered no timeline. It would be most critical to get him back when the playoffs start.Ohtani hasn’t pitched since July 3 because of inflammation in his left knee. He’d been brilliant on the mound until the knee issue surfaced. The knee problem hasn't kept Ohtani out of the lineup as the team’s designated hitter. He leads the Dodgers with 26 home runs, a slugging percentage of .544 and an on-base percentage of .393. Roberts indicated he expects Ohtani to play all four games against the Brewers and will evaluate him before the Dodgers start a three-game series at Colorado Aug. 17.This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Will Shohei Ohtani pitch soon? SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIslam Makhachev vs. Ian Garry: Four Brazilian experts make their UFC 330 picksIslam Makhachev and Ian Garry face off during the UFC 330 press conference. | 📷: Chris Unger/Zuffa/Getty Striker vs. grappler. Size vs. strength. Ireland vs. Russia. The UFC 330 main event on Saturday has fans and analysts intrigued by the technical and tactical possibilities of a five-round championship fight between Islam Makhachev and Ian Garry. The matchup presents a stark contrast in styles. Garry will look to use his length, movement and striking to control the fight at distance, while Makhachev figures to rely on his physical strength, pressure and elite grappling to bring the action to the canvas. How effectively each man can impose his preferred range could determine who leaves the Octagon with the belt. Sherdog.com Rio de Janeiro correspondent Marcelo Alonso spoke to four Brazilian specialists, all of whom expect a difficult, competitive fight. Three picked Makhachev to remain undefeated, while only one predicted Garry would leave the Octagon as champion.Fighting Nerds coach Pablo Sucupira sees a path for Ian Garry to upset Islam Makhachev Fighting Nerds head coach Pablo Sucupira: “One thing people don’t realize is that there’s a big physical disparity in this division. There are fighters at 170 pounds who could fight at 155, but there are others who could fight at 185. [Jack Della] Madalena, for example, isn’t a big 170-pounder, while Garry is very big. [Carlos] Prates, who looked big against JDM, looked small next to Garry. Garry is much bigger than Islam. Unlike Madalena, Garry doesn’t load up on his strikes. He uses his lead hand very well to control the distance and angles. It’s not easy to take him down and keep him on the bottom. In my opinion, he has the right game to beat Makhachev.”Ian Garry can shock Islam Makhachev, but three experts still back the champ UFC welterweight contender Michael Oliveira: “Islam Makhachev has already been knocked out. I don’t see him making that mistake again by straying from his game plan. Sooner or later, he will get to Ian Garry and impose his game. I see Islam winning in the third or fourth round.” Porrada Training Center head coach Ronny Markes: “Distance control will be a key factor for Garry. If he is able to prevent Makhachev from closing the distance and take him down, or frustrate his takedown attempts, he can surprise him. Because once the fight goes to the ground, Islam is on a different level. I watched him training here at the PI against an ADCC champion, a Brazilian who was more than 10 kilograms heavier, under grappling rules. It was an incredibly tough session, and Islam only lost by two or three points in that grappling sparring session. Islam has the cardio to fight hard for five rounds. If he manages to get the fight to the ground, he’ll create serious problems. Ian’s best chance is to use his reach and keep the fight at striking distance.” Astra Fight Team head coach Marcelo Brigadeiro: “People are saying that this is a different weight division and that Islam is smaller, but I don’t see it that way. The Russian is used to training with heavier guys at AKA. He also had a hard time making 155 pounds. Now he will be stronger at welterweight. I believe Islam Makhachev will once again impose his game and keep the belt.”0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 7 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

رابطAPNEWS.COMJared Kushner to visit Israel and Egypt next week with Board of Peace officials to talk GazaJared Kushner waits to walk into the ring after the lightweight championship bout at UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House, June 15, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)2026-08-14T00:34:59Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and negotiator Jared Kushner will travel to the Middle East next week to try to advance plans for an end to the conflict in Gaza after a deal recently announced by the Trump administration ran into Israeli opposition. An official with the Board of Peace, the body Trump established to oversee the fragile ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, said Kushner, board high representative Nickolay Mladenov, and executive board member and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair would arrive in Israel on Sunday. The group will then travel to Cairo, where meetings of a Palestinian technocratic group set to assume control of Gaza under a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal have been taking place for the past several months, the official said. The trip was reported earlier by Axios. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because planning for details of the trip has not yet been finalized, said the meetings would demonstrate the determination of Trump and the Board of Peace to “see peace, prosperity and sustainable security emerge” in a demilitarized Gaza where Hamas has ceded control to allow reconstruction of the devastated territory. But Israel has dismissed a recent deal announced by Trump for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw its forces from the Palestinian territory, marking a rare public display of friction with the Trump administration. Though Hamas accepted the plan to decommission its weapons, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in recent days that Israel would not withdraw until Hamas has completely disarmed. The deal had been seen as a potential breakthrough for ending the war in Gaza. The agreement was based on an October ceasefire that ended major military operations and brought about the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza, but it has stalled on other fronts.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 25 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

رابطAPNEWS.COMJosh Kushner moves into spotlight after stunning purchase of Lakers with partner Bob IgerCrypto Arena is viewed before a Los Angeles Lakers NBA basketball game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Jan. 4, 2026, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Ethan Swope, File)2026-08-14T01:15:11Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — For a billionaire and a tech investor who also has one of the U.S.’ best-known surnames, Josh Kushner has managed to stay off the front pages and out of the world’s broader discourse to a remarkable degree. That’s all changed this summer, at least in the parts of the world with a passion for sports. The 41-year-old Kushner and his partner, former Disney CEO Bob Iger, reached a stunning agreement this week to buy the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers from Mark Walter at a valuation of $12.5 billion — the highest ever for a team sports sale. It’s been a wild two weeks for the 41-year-old Kushner, who followed up his failed attempt to purchase a stake in future World Cup profits in a much-criticized plan orchestrated by FIFA President Gianni Infantino by acquiring the glamorous Lakers in a shockingly swift deal.Until this month, many people didn’t even know that Jared Kushner — President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and his longtime lieutenant in government — had a younger brother with a thriving business empire, a supermodel wife and a passion for basketball. While Josh Kushner avoids the spotlight and rarely grants interviews, the success of his venture capital investment firm, Thrive Capital, has boosted him to mogul status in the past few years. Forbes estimates Kushner’s net worth at about $5 billion.Kushner’s partner in this historical venture is no secret to anybody, at least in Los Angeles or the entertainment industry or the larger business world. The 75-year-old Iger ran The Walt Disney Co. for two stints over the past two decades, leading the Hollywood behemoth into the streaming age before he stepped away from the Mouse earlier this year. Los Angeles is still reeling from the surprise of this deal: Just 10 months after Walter — the owner currently presiding over the renaissance of the back-to-back World Series champion Dodgers — formally took control of the Lakers, he essentially flipped them for a possible multibillion-dollar profit to two new owners with none of Walter’s sports ownership experience or credibility among Southern California fans.So who are the two men suddenly in charge of LA’s 17-time NBA championship team? Read More Kushner and Iger were reportedly introduced by their significant othersThe son of a real estate mogul, Kushner founded Thrive Capital in 2009 and health insurance company Oscar Health in 2012. Thrive Capital grew with early investments in OpenAI and SpaceX, among other tech companies. He remains close with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.Kushner and Iger reportedly first met eight years ago after they were set up by Iger’s wife, Willow Bay, and Kushner’s then-girlfriend, Karlie Kloss, whom he has since married. What started as a friendly mentorship turned into a business relationship shortly before Iger left Disney for the first time.Iger joined Thrive Capital in 2022 as a venture partner, with Iger connecting Kushner to the broader business world while Kushner educated Iger on the tech world. Iger left only months later to go back to Disney for another stint, but he stayed in close contact with Kushner, and they teamed up again this year. The new owners pounced quickly upon hearing about possible saleIger confirmed to the California Post on Wednesday that he had teamed with Kushner on pursuing an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas, only to pivot dramatically last weekend when they learned Walter might be looking to sell the Lakers.“We immediately decided that given the value of the franchise and the iconic nature of the team, that we would be really smart to pursue it,” Iger said. “The deal came together in three days. It’s that simple.”Iger acknowledged that the deal was finalized so quickly that he and Kushner hadn’t had time to make any long-term plans for the Lakers. New owners have basketball backgrounds, but not with the LakersKushner is new to the Lakers, but not to the NBA. He once owned a minority stake in the Memphis Grizzlies, but sold it to buy into the Miami Heat. He’ll have to sell that stake to complete his purchase of the Lakers. Kushner and Kloss also have been spotted frequently at Knicks games.Iger is a longtime basketball aficionado — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reportedly introduced him to Bay, a former NBA journalist, 30 years ago — but his particular background makes his Lakers ownership a bit strange.Iger grew up a Knicks fan, and after he moved to Los Angeles, he decided he couldn’t support the rival Lakers — so he became one of the Clippers’ most prominent fans, buying season tickets and forming a friendship with former point guard Chris Paul. Kushner’s political beliefs differ from his brother and fatherThousands of Lakers fans in progressive Los Angeles reacted with a raised eyebrow when they learned the name of their team’s primary new owner Wednesday, but it’s not that simple.Kushner’s surname is indeed among the most politically weighted in the world, but Josh Kushner and Kloss both have publicly said they don’t share the conservative beliefs currently espoused by his brother and their father, Charles Kushner.Josh Kushner has repeatedly donated to progressive political candidates, and he once stated in an interview that “liberal values have guided my life.” Kloss is an outspoken advocate for reproductive rights and other progressive causes.Iger has described himself as a political independent with progressive personal views. He briefly served in a business advisory forum for Trump in 2017 before resigning over his beliefs in environmental conservation. ___AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA GREG BEACHAM Beacham is a sports writer in California.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 4 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

رابطAPNEWS.COMWhat to know about a surrogacy dispute between a California couple, their surrogate and Texas courtsChildren's Medical Center is shown in Dallas, Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026. (AP Photo/LM Otero)2026-08-14T01:06:57Z A newborn with a severe heart defect is at the center of a legal battle between a California couple and a surrogate who flew from Alaska to Texas to give birth in a case that has drawn the attention of anti-abortion groups and GOP leaders.McKenna West, the surrogate, gave birth Wednesday to a boy with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a life-threatening heart condition. West, who is a nurse, said the couple had wanted to end the pregnancy at 20 weeks, after consulting with doctors about the diagnosis. The case quickly garnered national attention after Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton intervened and a judge in Dallas ordered two hospitals to ensure they provide life-sustaining care and that the baby remain in Texas until at least a hearing in late August. The Los Angeles-based couple, Omar Ahmed and Nausheen Gilkar, say West violated the surrogacy contract, and they obtained a restraining order that prevented West from seeing or holding the child after he was born, according to an attorney for the surrogate. Ahmed and Gilkar were in Dallas, Texas, with the newborn as he receives medical care, according to the couple’s attorney. West and her supporters have called the child Gabriel, but in court filings, the couple has called the boy Rumi. Here’s what to know about the case and surrogacy law in the U.S. California couple says surrogate broke their contractWest entered an agreement with the couple through Worldwide Surrogacy Specialists, LLC in August 2025. In court documents, the couple argues that West broke a surrogacy contract and that a California court determined she has no rights to legal or physical custody of the child. West’s lawyers have alleged the couple spent weeks pressuring West to seek an abortion after learning of the diagnosis. With legal support from the conservative Christian organization Alliance Defending Freedom, West petitioned a Dallas court to give her custody over the child two days before she gave birth. According to court documents in Alaska, the couple claimed West agreed with the decision to end the pregnancy after the diagnosis but then changed her mind and cut off contact. “After heartbreaking consultations with medical providers and their own research about the suffering and quality of life HLHS babies endure, A.B. and C.D. (birth parents) made the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy,” a filing from the parents’ attorneys reads. “It is undisputed that West initially agreed and that she herself made the initial appointment.” Read More Other court documents show the couple at one point chose to have West deliver in California and their child begin lifelong treatment from there.“West is harming Rumi by relocating to Texas, requiring him to be born in Texas, away from his parents and the specialized cardiac team in Los Angeles that will provide his lifelong care,” the court filing states. “Her actions are forcing Rumi to begin treatment (including critical heart surgery) in one state and be transferred to another.” Republican officials have rallied in support of the surrogateLive Action, an anti-abortion group based in Arlington, Virginia, paid for West and her two children to fly to Texas, which bans abortion, to seek medical care, according to Noah Brandt, a spokesperson for the group.Days before West gave birth, Paxton said his office was intervening in the case to “protect baby Gabriel’s life” by notifying UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas of legal obligations to provide life-saving care, and accused Gilkar and Ahmed of refusing to consent to life-saving surgery for the heart issue. The couple has denied those claims and their attorney, Lee Budner, accused Paxton of turning a family tragedy into “political theater.” The couple’s “worst fear,” Ahmed wrote in court filings, was that West “may try to keep our child from us after she gives birth to him.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Surrogacy law across the US is vague and varies by stateSurrogacy isn’t regulated on a federal level and each state has its own laws, which can leave room for gaps in interpretation, experts say. Maya Shulman, a California attorney and professor who has worked on surrogacy cases for more than 15 years, said she rarely sees cases like this. She emphasized the importance of contracts in surrogacy agreements, adding that many have ironclad details about termination and thorough details about what’s entailed. A surrogate is not a parent, Shulman said, and in this case, the baby’s health had to be considered. “You need to think about the quality of life for the baby,” Shulman said in reference to the heart defect. In California where she practices, a court would likely honor the surrogacy contract, Shulman said, recognizing the couple as the parents with custody of the child. The baby’s heart defect requires multiple surgeriesHypoplastic left heart syndrome is a condition where one side of the heart is underdeveloped and prevents normal blood flow. If untreated, the condition causes severe symptoms such as trouble breathing, skin rashes, weak pulse and ashen or bluish skin. The condition requires a set of three surgeries. The initial surgery, the Norwood procedure, is usually done within days or weeks of birth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Only about 925 babies in the U.S. are born with HLHS each year, according to the CDC.Without treatment, children affected by the heart defect can die within days or weeks. Surgical repairs are not necessarily cures, and additional surgeries or heart transplants may be needed, according to the CDC. ___ Associated Press reporter Becky Bohrer in Juneau, Alaska, contributed to this report. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 10 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

(AP Photo/Lee Jin-man, File)2026-08-14T01:00:32Z SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Friday threatened to exercise its right to self-defense in a statement that slammed the upcoming U.S.-South Korean military drills as a war rehearsal that would be more provocative than last year. The U.S. and South Korean militaries are to start their annual large-scale drills Monday and have described the scope of this year’s training as similar to past years. The allies have said the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises are meant to strengthen their readiness against North Korean threats and reiterated that they are defensive in nature. The North Korean warning signals the country could conduct more weapons tests in coming days after its neighbors detected two ballistic missile launches off North Korea’s east coast in the past week. North Korea hasn’t commented on the launches, but outside experts assess they were likely meant to protest the U.S.-South Korean drills or upgrade weapons systems. In a statement carried by state media Friday, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry called the U.S.-South Korean training “a rehearsal for an aggressive war” that is triggering a different level of instability in the region.“It is our consistent principle of ensuring security to respond to a new level of a threat with a new level of a deterrent,” the statement said. North Korea “will more clearly express its stance on the enemies to cope with any threats and challenges through the responsible and decisive exercise of the right to legitimate self-defense.” North Korea also said the drills would be of a “more serious provocative nature and dangerousness than last year” and involve all the military assets and war-fighting modes of the U.S. and South Korea, a claim that those countries haven’t said. Read More Analysts say North Korea has often used its adversaries’ military drills as a pretext to ramp up weapons testing activities to expand its nuclear and missile arsenals and promote public support of leader Kim Jong Un. Kim has ignored the U.S. and South Korea’s offers to resume diplomacy and focused on taking steps to bolster his nuclear arsenal since his summitry with U.S. President Donald Trump broke down in 2019. Experts say Kim will likely eventually aim to use his advancing nuclear program to win greater U.S. concessions such as extensive sanctions relief. رابطAPNEWS.COMField of Dreams becomes the Hall of Fame, as 26 members come out of the corn for Phillies-Twins gamePlayers walk onto the field before a baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and the Philadelphia Phillies at the Field of Dreams movie site, Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, in Dyersville, Iowa. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)2026-08-14T01:11:00Z DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Major League Baseball came back to the Field of Dreams carrying a big piece of Cooperstown. The pregame pomp before the Minnesota Twins played the Philadelphia Phillies — adjacent to the farmland where the 1989 fantasy was filmed — featured 26 members of the Hall of Fame emerging from the outfield corn just as the ghost players did in the movie. With some of the loudest cheers saved for former Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt and former Twins catcher Joe Mauer, the capacity crowd of about 8,000 at the newly constructed ballpark in northeast Iowa soaked up the surreal atmosphere as the aged stars strolled into the infield for proper introductions.Fireworks were launched from the cornfield during the national anthem, and Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber followed with his own big bang — a stalk shot to right on Twins starter Taj Bradley’s third pitch of the game. After stealing the show at the inaugural 2021 event, which was played on the same footprint at a temporary setup that also hosted the 2022 game, Kevin Costner did not appear. But the star of the film — as the restless farmer Ray Kinsella who reconnects with his late father by playing catch on his front-yard ballfield — narrated the pregame video that helped pump some old-guard nostalgia through the new-school broadcast on global streaming giant Netflix. Both teams emerged from the corn together to take their places along the lines like on opening day, and Twins All-Star Byron Buxton — who came off the injured list in the afternoon to play — took the microphone to evoke a line from James Earl Jones, who played the author Terence Mann in the movie. “The one constant through all the years has been baseball,” Buxton said before Schwarber followed with a brief script on an idyllic late-summer night after heavy rain moved through the area earlier in the day. Read More Then came the legends, and living ones at that, unlike those wool-clad lads in the movie. Schmidt and Steve Carlton wore Phillies uniforms along with Jim Kaat, who played for both teams. Mauer and Bert Blyleven donned Twins jerseys. The others — Andruw Jones, Harold Baines, Fred McGriff, Adrián Beltré, Andre Dawson, Larry Walker, Cal Ripken Jr., Iván Rodríguez, Jim Thome, Scott Rolen, Tony Pérez, Tony La Russa, Jeff Kent, Fergie Jenkins, Joe Torre, CC Sabathia, Billy Wagner, Rollie Fingers, Lee Smith and Trevor Hoffman — helped form a half-ring around the diamond to represent about one-third of the Cooperstown contingent that’s still alive. This was the largest such gathering at a ballpark, not including the annual ceremonies at the Hall of Fame in upstate New York, since the All-Star Game in 2008 that feted the final season at old Yankee Stadium. No place evokes baseball and family nostalgia like the Field of Dreams siteBefore the game, Buxton played catch with his 12-year-old son on the nearby movie site that remains open to the public for no cost on non-event days. Twins manager Derek Shelton did the same with his 78-year-old father, a former educator who coached him on his high school baseball team. Shelton later complained that his arm was in weaker shape. “You don’t get old enough that an experience like that is not emotional to be able to do something with your father,” Shelton said.Phillies manager Don Mattingly, whose son just happens to be the club’s general manager, found himself harkening back to Indiana childhood ballgames with his brothers upon arrival on the team bus.“This place reminds me of when I was a kid,” Mattingly said. “You’d go down a dirt road, and all of sudden you’d see a cornfield and then there’d be a field there.”Both teams wore throwback uniforms — the Twins in home threads from their first season in 1961 and the Phillies in road jerseys circa 1940 — in step with the hand-operated scoreboard in right field. The permanent ballpark built for all kinds of events — including the opportunity to host MLB games on a recurring basis — also has plenty of amenities with the video board in left field, a state-of-the-art sound system and, of course, indoor plumbing. The feel of the farm was just as strong as the buzz of the ballpark, with natural sponsor John Deere pledging $100,000 per home run hit to hunger-relief organization Feeding America. The special environment didn’t erase the circumstance of the stretch run of the regular season, though, with both the Twins and Phillies in the thick of their respective wild-card races.“We’re not in Minnesota for three days,” Phillies star Bryce Harper said, “but we’re still playing the Twins three times and we’ve still got to win some games.”___See AP’s full MLB coverage here DAVE CAMPBELL Campbell is a sports reporter for The Associated Press, based in Minneapolis. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSeahawks prepare for Cowboys in first preseason game this weekenThe Seattle Seahawks will open their preseason schedule this Saturday when they host the Dallas Cowboys at Lumen Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. in Seattle as players begin competing for position ahead of the regular season. Training camp is underway as players contend for spots on the team’s final 53-man roster. The upcoming three preseason games over the next three weeks provide critical opportunities for both young players and veterans to secure their places on the squad.Linebacker Drake Thomas emphasized the significance of these exhibition games for players working to earn a spot on the team. Thomas explained that preseason competition played a direct role in his own career trajectory. “The only reason I’ve gotten the opportunities that I’ve gotten is because of preseason games,” Thomas said. “So, when I say it’s a huge opportunity, that’s not something small that I’m kind of brushing over. These next three weeks, these next 3 games can be life-changing for young guys in this league.”Defensive lineman Rylie Mills is among those looking to make an impact this preseason after being limited last season by an ACL injury. Following his recovery, Mills recorded a sack in the Super Bowl. He recalled the support from his teammates after returning to action and making a big play on the field. “The coolest thing for me after was going to the sideline and everyone kind of smacking my helmet,” Mills said. “I think it was just….everyone in here has seen me work and doing my knee and stuff and trying to be involved with the guys and just kind of waiting for an opportunity. You know to have a big moment and to have everyone to celebrate with. These are the guys that I have been with the whole time and I think that was the coolest moment for me.”Mills added that every snap matters during training camp and exhibition play. “I think that every rep’s an opportunity to get better,” Mills said. “So, for me you just gotta go all out every play.”Safety Ty Okada noted that despite offseason celebrations following the team’s Super Bowl victory, the defense remains focused on executing assignments and trusting teammates. “When you’re out there, just remember you’ve got 10 of your brothers out there,” Okada said. “You’re not out there trying to make every play on your own. Just own your slice of the pie, do your one/11. Things will work out for you and just try to trust your brothers next to you to go out there and make their plays and everything will work out well.”0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 62 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDodgers Make Catcher Shakeup With Smith, Rushing Still SidelinedThe Los Angeles Dodgers’ catcher position is the main point of concern for the team at this point, given that they are missing two valuable bats at that position: Will Smith and Dalton Rushing.Smith is still easing his way back into action, with a return looking like September at this point. Rushing, meanwhile, is looking to return as a pinch hitter by avoiding surgery despite a minor UCL tear. For Rushing, playing catcher looks to be a long shot, according to Dave Roberts, though he seems to be a bit more optimistic about his chances to work behind the dish. With both of them at least a week away, the Dodgers have two solid options to hold the fort down in Ben Rortvedt and Hunter Feduccia. May 26, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith (16) is greeted by pinch hitter Dalton Rushing (68) after scoring a run against the Colorado Rockies during the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn ImagesBoth catchers have experience with the Dodgers organization and the pitchers, and carry real major league experience that makes them effective backstops for the Dodgers. Still, in case either Rortvedt or Feduccia gets hurt, the Dodgers need a reliable third option, and they may have just found one in the minor leagues. Who is the Dodgers’ new catcherAfter releasing Chuckie Robinson, another defensive first catcher, the Dodgers signed Chadwick Tromp to a minor league deal. Tromp was just designated for assignment on July 31st, and on August 4th, he chose to enter free agency. Now, he lands with the Dodgers, a team that will need someone like him if more catcher injuries strike a team that, for the second year in a row, seemingly can’t avoid them. Robinson, despite being a great success story of a player who worked hard in the minors and ground to earn appearances for a contender like the Dodgers, has minimal impact with his bat. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn ImagesWhile Tromp is not near the hitter Rushing or Smith are, he can hit left-handed pitching. He, for his career, has a .273 batting average in 77 plate appearances against lefties. His .701 OPS against lefties is not ideal by any means, but it is good enough, especially when compared with Tromp’s experience in the major leagues, playing in 88 games. He is well-traveled as well, having played for the Giants, Braves, and Orioles throughout his career. Tromp may never get a crack this year, but he is right in line to step in if an opportunity strikes.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 49 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDraft goodJul 29, 2026; San Francisco, California, USA; San Francisco Giants top draft pick Jackson Flora (second from right) greets team president Larry Baer before a game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Oracle Park. Mandatory Credit: D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect I can’t help but try to get into the psychology of the poll respondents with these SB Nation Reacts surveys, and since these are supposed to be strictly Giants fans polled, I am fixating on the 1% who graded their 2026 amateur draft a “D.” Did they have money riding on a different #1 pick? Did Jackson Flora bully them in school? Who knows, but it’s safe to say that it’s a minority opinion, and not just among Giants fans.As Brady posted yesterday, Baseball American has ranked the Giants as a Top 5 farm system, a stunning development I just figured I’d never live to see. They’re barely a top 5 team in their division these days, and so seeing them in the upper echelon of anything other than being a staggering embarrassment of historic proportion with a mostly hopeless future guaranteed is not just a welcome surprise but a perspective-altering development.Could the Giants actually be on their way to opening a competitive window thanks to their f-f-f-farm system? Buster Posey’s (currently) tanked legacy is counting on it. A plausible worst record in franchise history to cement their worst 5-year stretch ever isn’t something he’ll be able to come back from, reputationally, without some sort of extended run of success or an outright World Series win within the next few years — but then again, he’s been graded on a curve, hasn’t he? Still, for as much as Buster Posey comes off as a dilettante in press gaggles and profiles (with an on-field result to match), this player development success is undeniable. It’s not just broken clock luck where the team has gotten things right because of high draft standings or someone falling into their lap. They’ve managed to bring their international scouting and signings up from afterthought to competitive with the typical frontrunners. They seem to have joined the pack leading the change from Three True Outcome type draft profiles to contact suddenly being important again. About a month before the draft, I was agog at how much the farm system had risen. Just like the SB Nation Reacts polling, there’s a decent amount of vibes baked into things like farm system rankings and prospect scouting. That makes sense since it’s betting on an uncertain future with only personal experiences and some player comps to go on. The Giants’ draft felt right. Their minor league win-loss record looks right. The players are performing in the way you’d hope to see actually developing players perform. With Bryce Eldridge’s graduation (formerly, a 55 Future Value player, per FanGraphs), the Giants still have six 50+ FV players, with Jackson Flora rated the #2 overall prospect. 4 of their 33 players with a projected floor of a minimum 40 Future Value (bench player) were drafted this year, 1 came from an international signing (Luis Hernandez) this season, and 1 from their trade with the Paadres (Joniel Hernandez). So, the data is overwhelmingly in support of the opinion that the Giants had a great draft on top of a good trade deadline. Their farm system is in very good shape. Maybe still missing upper level pitching and that one true prospect who is far and away the best like Eldridge was… but I’m still stuck on that 1%. Automatic f*** the Giants voting? I can respect that. Maybe Bolemon & Waechter don’t do it for some. Reasonable. I’m not going to let it bother me anymore, actually. The Giants are finally doing what needs to be done in order to become a competitive franchise again: prioritizing player development. The dream of the championship era was that the operation had been modernized and would be able to produce a steady-ish supply of position players and pitchers. That didn’t wind up being the case and was pretty far from the truth, in fact, as one of Farhan Zaidi’s first tasks upon taking over the front office was revamping player development to bring it in line with 21st century practices. The franchise also committed many millions of dollars to building a new training facility in Arizona. The fruits of that labor seem to be blossoming, finally. Can Buster Posey & Zack Minasian actually deliver on the promise of farm to table baseball? That’s a question for a separate poll. For now, it’s enough to enjoy this fantastic success.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 49 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

رابطAPNEWS.COMDocuments show federal surveillance operation in Minnesota targeted progressive groups, unionsCook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, speaks at the opening of the annual Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting in Nuku'alofa, Tonga, Aug. 26, 2024. (AP Photo/Charlotte Graham-McLay, File)2026-08-14T02:05:34Z MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal agents launched a sweeping undercover surveillance operation earlier this year targeting progressive organizations, labor unions and other groups protesting the immigration crackdown then raging through Minneapolis, according to court documents filed Thursday. The program, dubbed Operation Puppet Master, was aimed at what officials called a network of conspirators helping “violent opportunists and agitators.” The documents were filed in a case involving 15 people charged by federal prosecutors in June with impeding the crackdown, accusing them of conspiring against the federal government through a range of actions, from throwing ice chunks to setting up blockades. The government documents were released Thursday in connection with a motion from a defense lawyer in the case, Kevin Riach, who requested that officials disclose more material collected during the investigations. The reality, according to government documents revealed in court motions, was Department of Homeland Security officers infiltrating meetings in churches, schools and parks that were often simply discussions of constitutionally protected protests.A statement from the department said Homeland Security Investigations doesn’t comment on the existence or status of on-going investigations or investigative methods. The statement referred questions to the U.S. attorney’s office in Minnesota, which didn’t immediately respond to an after-hours email from The Associated Press. Puppet Master, and a later operation called Project Whipple Shield, were a “broad and irrational investigation” driven by politics and not criminal conduct, Riach said in a motion filed Thursday. Read More Take, for example, a Jan. 31 meeting in a Minneapolis library, when a Homeland Security report says an undercover officer identified as “UCA 9833” listened as supporters of a progressive climate group, the Sunrise Movement, discussed sit-ins, de-escalation tactics and “having a police liaison and safety marshal present during events.”“During the Action meeting, it was made clear that the Sunrise Movement organization focused on ‘peaceful’ protests,” the agent reported. Dozens of pages of documents describe agents secretly infiltrating meetings, monitoring activist chat groups and using license plate numbers to compile names of people who attended gatherings. A slide created by Homeland Security’s investigative branch titled “The Conspiracy” shows 18 organizations, from a small Minneapolis bicycle repair collective to the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of labor groups in the U.S.The government also obtained years of certain financial records for groups ranging from the Sunrise Movement to major unions, including the Service Employees International Union and the Communications Workers of America.“You are requested not to disclose the existence of this summons for an indefinite period of time,” warned a DHS request to FedWire, a money transfer system operated by the U.S. Federal Reserve.Groups that the government investigated were furious at the news.“Our union has become the latest target of a corrupt administration that weaponizes the legal process against law-abiding Americans exercising our Constitutional rights,” CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. said in a statement. “We will not be intimidated, and we will not be silenced.” The AP News Guild, the union that represents many Associated Press employees, is part of the CWA.On Thursday, a coalition of Minneapolis-area civil society groups defended the protests and criticized the investigations. The government is “lashing out desperately in hopes of intimidating people and organizations that have shown the power of communities acting together,” said a statement distributed by Unidos MN, a local human rights group.DHS deployed about 3,000 federal officers to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area for roughly three months starting late last year in what the department called its “ largest immigration enforcement operation ever.” It led to thousands of arrests, angry mass protests and the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens.Minnesota U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen said the 15 were part of two groups that he characterized as “antifa,” an umbrella term for a diffuse movement of militant left-wing activists. Defense attorney Riach said at the time that his client, Isaac Sant, had no affiliation with antifa, which he called “a boogeyman invented by the far-right.”___Kelleher reported from Honolulu.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 72 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

رابطAPNEWS.COMCook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown expected to return to power following electionCook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, speaks at the opening of the annual Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting in Nuku'alofa, Tonga, Aug. 26, 2024. (AP Photo/Charlotte Graham-McLay, File)2026-08-14T02:11:20Z WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown is expected to lead the South Pacific nation’s government for a second term after his party won more seats than any other group in this week’s election.Voting continued for one of 24 Parliamentary seats in the country of 17,000 people, which is made up of 15 islands. Bad weather prevented electoral officers from reaching the island of Nassau earlier in the week and results there were expected late Friday New Zealand time. However, Brown’s Cook Islands Party, a nationalist group that has governed since 2010, was already celebrating victory after winning 12 seats which promised a fifth term in power. A 13-seat majority is required to form a government, but Brown’s party has joined with independent lawmakers to pass laws before.“Today my heart is full of gratitude,” Brown wrote on Facebook. “Thank you to everyone who came out and voted, for taking part and making your voice heard. This is what makes our country strong.”In the seat yet to be decided, the incumbent, a member of Brown’s party, is competing with an independent candidate. Voters worried about cost of livingAhead of the ballot held Wednesday in the islands, local news outlets reported that inflation and the cost of living were voters’ chief preoccupations. The war in Iran has prompted economic anxiety throughout the South Pacific, where tiny and remote nations are heavily dependent on imported products, including diesel for power generation. Brown’s opponents hoped dissatisfaction about the price of goods, water, electricity and transport would prompt a closer election. However, preliminary results released by a government agency showed the Cook Islands United Party, which split from Brown’s group in 2018, had won just four seats, up from three in 2022.The socially liberal Democratic Party, which held five seats and led the opposition before, fell out of Parliament altogether. In an upset, party leader Tina Pupuke-Browne lost her seat by three votes, ending eight years in office. Read More Result signals minimal fallout from dispute with New ZealandIt will be a second term as prime minister for Brown, 63, who entered Parliament in 2010 after a career as a public servant and property developer. He won his seat of Takuvaine with a large majority in this week’s vote. The result indicated Brown had survived unscathed a saga that began in 2025, when he quarreled with New Zealand’s government over a suite of deals he signed with Beijing, without first consulting Wellington, Cook Islands’ biggest funder. Cook Islands is a self-governing country with a 60-year free association relationship to New Zealand, which means it’s defended by New Zealand’s military, and its citizens hold New Zealand passports. The close ties require Cook Islands leaders to speak with Wellington before making pacts with other countries that might affect New Zealand. When Brown signed a series of cooperation deals with Beijing in February 2025, he defended his decision not to consult Wellington about them. New Zealand disagreed and an escalating standoff led Wellington to freeze millions of dollars in funding to Cook Islands last June, citing security concerns about the range and contents of the Beijing deals. Frosty relations eased in April when the two countries signed a defense pact clarifying their ties and pledging that New Zealand would be Cook Islands’ “partner of choice regarding defense and security matters.” Wellington feared the prospect of China occupying that role.In recent years, Beijing has vied with Western powers for influence and closer ties with Pacific Island leaders whose tiny and often aid-reliant countries lie in a vast, lucrative and strategically important ocean. Ousted opposition leader protested China dealsWhen relations broke down last year, some Cook Islanders, including then opposition leader Pupuke-Brown, protested the prime minister’s actions. Pupuke-Brown accused Brown of jeopardizing ties with New Zealand, where thousands of Cook Islanders live, work and study. However, the resumption of aid from Wellington this year appeared to have quashed the outcry.Brown is also a proponent of Cook Islands developing a deep sea mining industry in its large and possibly rich exclusive economic zone. The matter has divided leaders throughout the Pacific, with detractors warning the practice could harm fragile ocean ecosystems. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEnnis Rakestraw Jr. Suffers Injury During Lions Preseason Loss to BengalsThe last thing the Detroit Lions needed Thursday night was another injury in the secondary.Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened.Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. left Detroit’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals in the second quarter after suffering an injury while attempting a tackle. He did not return to the game, and the severity of the injury was not immediately known. For a player who has already had his first two NFL seasons interrupted by injuries, the sight of Rakestraw leaving early was particularly concerning.Another Injury Scare for RakestrawDetroit selected Rakestraw in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but the former Missouri standout has barely had an opportunity to establish himself in the NFL.He played only eight games as a rookie and logged just 46 defensive snaps. His entire 2025 season was then wiped out by a shoulder injury, leaving him with only six career tackles entering 2026.This summer was supposed to be his chance to finally get back on track.Instead, Thursday ended prematurely. That is especially frustrating because Rakestraw badly needed preseason snaps. He entered the opener trying to regain ground in a cornerback competition that has become increasingly crowded, with Nick Whiteside emerging as one of Detroit’s biggest training camp risers.Lions Cannot Afford More Cornerback InjuriesDetroit’s outside cornerback picture already looks much different than it did a year ago.The Lions released Terrion Arnold earlier this offseason, and Arnold agreed to sign with Seattle on Thursday. Detroit now projects D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin as its primary outside corners, with Rakestraw, Whiteside and several others competing behind them. That makes Rakestraw’s health important even if he does not open the season as a starter.Depth disappears quickly in the NFL.One injury to Reed or Ya-Sin could suddenly push the next cornerback into a major role.Detroit was hoping Rakestraw could become one of those dependable options.Rakestraw Was Already Fighting for PositionRakestraw’s training camp had been uneven before Thursday. He received first-team opportunities during the offseason, but Whiteside’s emergence and some inconsistent practice performances had pushed Rakestraw into a genuine fight for snaps. That made the preseason particularly important.Rakestraw needed live game repetitions after essentially losing an entire season of development. Now the Lions have to hope this latest injury does not cost him even more.Bottom LineThere is no reason to speculate about the seriousness of Ennis Rakestraw’s injury until the Lions provide more information.Still, the timing could hardly be worse.Rakestraw entered the preseason needing healthy snaps to reestablish himself in Detroit’s secondary after injuries derailed his first two seasons. Instead, his first game of 2026 ended in the second quarter after another injury. For Rakestraw, the hope is that this proves to be nothing more than a brief scare. For the Lions, it is another reminder that their cornerback depth may be thinner than they would like.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 3 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJoe Burrow starts and backup Joe Flacco throws a TD pass as Bengals beat Lions 16-14CINCINNATI (AP) — Joe Flacco threw a touchdown pass in relief of Joe Burrow, Evan McPherson kicked three field goals and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Detroit Lions 16-14 Thursday night in the preseason opener for both teams.Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor got his starters at least three plays. Burrow and the first-string offensive line played two series, with the franchise quarterback going 5 of 6 for 39 yards.Detroit's Dan Campbell didn’t play most of his starters, including quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Offensive tackle Blake Miller, taken with the 17th overall pick in the NFL draft, was in for 33 snaps, all in the first half.Luke Altmyer played most of the game and went 13 of 22 for 130 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The undrafted rookie directed a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter, capped by his 24-yard pass to Tarik Black with 1:35 remaining. Altmyer's 2-point conversion on a keeper got the Lions within 16-14.Cincinnati recovered the onside kick but went three-and-out and punted. Russ Yeast then picked off Altmyer at the Lions 35.Detroit got a pair of first-half field goals from Jake Bates on a sloppy night for the offense. The Lions committed two turnovers and also turned it over on downs at the Cincinnati 29 late in the first quarter. The Lions drove to the Bengals 33 on the first series before Jordan Battle picked off Altmyer at the 25 after the pass went off the hands of wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa. The Bengals turned a Lions turnover into a touchdown in the second quarter. A bad handoff between Altmyer and Jacob Saylors was recovered by defensive end Cashius Howell, Cincinnati's second-round pick, at the Lions 7.Two plays later, Flacco connected with rookie tight end Jack Endries on a 4-yard screen pass to make it 10-0. Flacco finished 5 of 8 for 51 yards.Third-string QB Josh Johnson was 10 of 19 for 84 yards.Bengals starters see early actionBurrow was in for 13 snaps. He threw a 16-yard strike down the middle to Ja'Marr Chase on the Bengals' second offensive play.He completed passes to four players, including two to running back Samaje Perine. With Taylor trying to show different looks on offense, Burrow was under center on the first four plays and seven overall. One thing Taylor won't like is that Burrow was sacked once and then hit while throwing on third-and-4 from the Lions 38 during the second series. That drive ended with McPherson's 56-yard field goal.Defensive tackles Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen both played three snaps. The Bengals traded their first-round pick to the Giants to get Lawrence, while Allen signed during free agency after playing for the Vikings last season.Dobbs proves to be a quick studyDetroit quarterback Joshua Dobbs, signed as a free agent on Monday, led the Lions to field goals on two of his three series. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMFernando Mendoza's Raiders debut proved Kirk Cousins value – and that's OKThe Silver and Black have a golden rule. In developing a plan to bring along their future franchise quarterback in Fernando Mendoza, the Las Vegas Raiders have emphasized patience. The No. 1 overall pick isn't being hurried into the starting lineup, with veteran Kirk Cousins claiming the first-string reps in training camp. That setup has promoted an atmosphere of tolerance from first-year coach Klint Kubiak, who has permitted his young players to sort out issues in real time during practices. But one message from the coaching staff has been clear throughout the summer: All mistakes should be learned from, and none should become habitual problems.By that measure, Mendoza's preseason debut was a success. His first work in a game setting in Aug. 13's tilt against the Arizona Cardinals wasn't without its share of slip-ups or setbacks. The Heisman Trophy winner's first throw was a backfoot heave out of bounds with coverage clamped down on his receivers, and his first drive stalled out after just six plays and 11 net yards.Yet Mendoza carried over the theme of resiliency that has colored his early acclimation to the NFL.On a night in which Kubiak followed through on his pledge to give the top pick extensive work, the quarterback finished 10-of-16 passing for 96 yards and one touchdown. More importantly, he calibrated his internal clock to largely keep the opposing pass rush at bay. After coming from an Indiana offense that afforded him easy solutions on his first read, he worked through his progressions, albeit to mixed results. And he fired tight-window throws – including on his first touchdown pass, a 6-yard strike to Jack Bech on third-and-goal – without veering into recklessness.Above all, though, he avoided repeating errors. And he even found a way to push through when circumstances were far from ideal.Mendoza still seems a long way from closing in on Cousins for the starting gig. For the time being, though, a franchise that has been stuck in a series of perpetual resets seems to have a path forward with its prized pick. Here are more key takeaways from Mendoza's first game action:Climbing out of deep holes could be challengingBetween its league-high 64 sacks surrendered and an inert running game, last year's Raiders offense frequently submerged itself into depths from which it could not escape. Kubiak's attack is largely built around avoiding such scenarios. The ask of Mendoza will not entail having him bail out the rest of the unit on third down. Thursday's performance, however, reinforced the rookie's need to stay on schedule.Mendoza's only grimace-inducing moment of the night came on a second-and-18 play on his second drive. In trying to check down to fellow rookie Mike Washington Jr., he led the running back into a massive hit from cornerback Denzel Burke, who was waiting in the flat. The Raiders then played it safe on third-and-long, waving the white flag with a draw.Mendoza excelled at Indiana in obvious passing situations, with his back-shoulder connections becoming his signature throw. At least for now, though, the quarterback is still trying to find his place within the offense before he can truly lift it up.No major hiccups with the basicsFor whatever ups and downs Mendoza experienced, he managed to steer clear of any major gaffes. The offense seemed to get set up without too much trouble, with no delay of game penalties on the night. Aside from one false start, the pre-snap process looked relatively seamless. The under-center work figured to be a point of emphasis, given both Mendoza's lack of experience in that area and his new scheme's reliance on play-action looks. Though he also a heavy dose of shotgun snaps, Mendoza managed to get clean exchanges when under center. His best throw of the evening even came on the kind of decisive dropback the team is eager to see more of. He kicked off his second drive by firing a tight-window throw off play-action to sixth-round rookie receiver Malik Benson – with whom he's formed a promising connection in camp – for 19 yards.Cousins serves reminder of his valueWith his one-day practice absence last week after getting into a training camp skirmish with Maxx Crosby, the 15-year veteran quarterback temporarily ceded first-team reps to Mendoza. On Thursday night, he made sure not to leave the door ajar. The offense was supremely clean in Cousins' lone drive, with a 13-yard touchdown to tight end Michael Mayer capping the 10-play, 68-yard march. There was nothing dazzling about the effort, but the heightened level of efficiency – particularly in all operational elements – drove home the value of leaving the offense in the hands of a capable caretaker until Mendoza is fully ready. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Fernando Mendoza's Raiders debut proved Kirk Cousins value – and that's OK0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 33 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMInstant takeaways from Colts preseason performance v. PatriotsThe Indianapolis Colts fell by a score of X to X to the New England Patriots in their preseason opener. But this time of the year isn't about wins and losses. In the preseason, individual performances often take priority, with playing time, roles, and roster spots up for grabs. With the clock now at triple zeros, here are our instant takeaways from what took place.- Anthony Richardson was 11-for-14 passing for 145 yards -- although his performance was more up and down than the stat line shows. That said, the passing game generated four plays of at least 16 yards and Richardson's impact with the ball in his hands was felt, as he rushed for 54 yards and a score. He did have an interception, but it went through Coleman Owen's hands.- Riley Leonard's performance was more inconsistent. He was 10-for-20 passing for 89 yards with an interception that was a bad decision and a bad throw. He seemed to struggle to find a rhythm.- Linebacker is a question mark, but the backups -- who saw starting snaps in this game -- Jaylon Carlies, Austin Ajiake, and Bryce Boettcher performed well.- On the flip side, it was very up and down for the backup cornerbacks. Mekhi Blackmon was penalized twice, and Johnathan Edwards had a rough showing.- That said, Edwards will be a very good special teams player for the Colts.- Rookie defensive end George Gumbs showcased his potential, logging a sack and a tackle for loss. Fellow rookie Caden Curry had a good night as well.- Coleman Owen was quite impressive as a return man. When it comes to the final roster spot at wide receiver, that role could be the differentiator between Owen, Deion Burks, and Anthony Gould.- Jaylahn Tuimoloau got the start and went against backup tackles, but it was a quiet night for him.- Ulysses Bentley's ability to impact the passing game can help him make a roster push. DJ Giddens remains sidelined, and the Colts could use that pass-catching element.- Of note, Dalton Tucker got the starting center reps with Tanor Bortolini not playing. Jalen Travis was at right tackle and Blake Freeland at left tackle.- Jonathan Owens is going to be an important special teams player this season.- Blake Grupe entered the game with the advantage over Spencer Shrader, but Grupe was 0/1 kicking, while Shrader was 2/2, which included making a 61-yarder late to tie the game.- Tight end Will Mallory has put together some good practices as of late and continued that performance in this game. Shane Steichen needs to get him more opportunities this season. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Instant takeaways from Colts preseason performance v. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAhmed Hassanein Dominates During Detroit Lions Preseason Loss to BengalsThe Detroit Lions may have lost their preseason opener Thursday night, but Ahmed Hassanein looked like a player who had absolutely no intention of wasting his opportunity.Detroit fell 16-14 to the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium, but Hassanein delivered one of the most impressive individual performances of the night. His final stat line jumped off the page:4 tackles, 3 quarterback hits, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss and 1 forced fumble. For a player who has been generating buzz throughout training camp, Hassanein just showed everyone that his production is not limited to Allen Park.Hassanein Wasted No TimeHassanein made his presence felt immediately. On his first defensive snap, the Lions edge defender got to Bengals starting quarterback Joe Burrow for a sack. That was only the beginning.Hassanein later pressured veteran quarterback Joe Flacco on consecutive plays before producing his biggest moment of the night in the third quarter. With Cincinnati threatening in the red zone, Hassanein came screaming off the edge and knocked the football out of quarterback Josh Johnson’s hand for a strip sack.It was exactly the type of disruptive play Detroit wants to see from a young defensive lineman fighting for a significant role.Training Camp Hype Is Translating to GamesDan Campbell has spent much of training camp praising Hassanein’s relentless effort. The Lions have experimented with him in the big-end role, and Campbell has repeatedly pointed to Hassanein’s motor, physicality and willingness to compete on every snap. There was still an obvious question entering Thursday.Would it translate when Detroit lined up against somebody other than its own offensive line?Consider that question answered.FOX 2’s Jennifer Hammond summed it up perfectly after Hassanein’s performance:“Not just a practice player, Ahmed Hassanein is meeting the moment.”He certainly did against Cincinnati.Hassanein Is Making Detroit’s Roster Decision EasierBefore the preseason opener, Hassanein looked like one of Detroit’s biggest training camp risers. After Thursday? It is getting increasingly difficult to imagine the Lions leaving him off the 53-man roster.Aidan Hutchinson and DJ Wonnum sit atop Detroit’s edge rotation, while Tyler Lacy has received significant work in the big-end role. Derrick Moore is another young player Detroit likes.Hassanein needed to separate himself from the rest of the competition. Two sacks, three quarterback hits and a forced fumble is one heck of a way to do it.There are still two preseason games remaining, but Hassanein is no longer simply fighting to get noticed. Now he may be fighting for playing time.Bottom LineAhmed Hassanein entered Thursday night as one of the most intriguing players in Lions training camp.He left Cincinnati as one of the biggest winners of Detroit’s preseason opener.Four tackles. Three quarterback hits. Two sacks. Two tackles for loss. One forced fumble. That is production.More importantly, it backed up everything Dan Campbell and the Lions coaching staff have been seeing in practice.Detroit lost the game.Ahmed Hassanein may have won himself a job.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 23 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM6 standouts from Packers' preseason loss to the SteelersThe Green Bay Packers took the field on Thursday night but fell 28-9 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first of three preseason matchups.Fortunately, wins and losses are irrelevant this time of year, and the lopsided result still produced some standouts. Here's who stood out for the Packers in Pittsburgh:Edge Lukas Van NessAn impressive offseason that carried over into training camp has now led to a strong start to the preseason for the 2023 first-round pick. On the defense’s opening drive, Van Ness displayed strong effort and nearly got home after a nice pass rush on second-and-6. A blitzing Zaire Franklin was officially credited with the sack, but it was Van Ness who applied the initial pressure and ended up on top of Mason Rudolph. It was exactly the kind of play you want to see from the guy who will be your top edge rusher in the absence of Micah Parsons when the regular season starts.Edge Brenton Cox Jr.Now in his fourth year with the team, Cox looked like a guy worthy of snaps during the regular season. On a first-and-10 to start the second quarter, he set the tone by driving starting right tackle Dylan Cook into the lap of Rudolph for a 9-yard sack. Later in the same quarter, Cox got pressure on Will Howard to force a throwaway. Cox has shown steady improvement since joining the team in 2023 as an undrafted free agent.S Kitan OladapoThe Packers sent so much pressure on Thursday that the third-year safety recorded a sack. It was 3rd-and-long in the second quarter when Oladapo came off the edge and chased Will Howard out of bounds to force a punt. Oladapo has primarily been used on special teams throughout his career, so it was good to see him make a play on defense and show his potential versatility.S Murvin Kenion IIIThe Packers need someone who can contribute on special teams and round out the safety room, and tonight that looked like a role best suited for Kenion. The undrafted rookie out of Nevada flew around the field on Thursday to record a team-high six tackles, all of which were solo. He was also in coverage on an incompletion in the red zone. Kenion isn’t a lock to make the team, but he made a pretty compelling case in his preseason debut.QB Kyle McCordThe former Philadelphia Eagles draft pick handled himself well behind shaky protection to go 12-for-16 for 102 passing yards. With 46 seconds left in the first half, McCord ran an effective two-minute offense, leading a 35-yard drive to get Green Bay into field goal range. He also showed really good poise on a couple of completions against imminent pressure. Tyrod Taylor is cemented as the Packers' backup, but McCord looked like a viable practice squad option if he doesn’t sign elsewhere.K Trey SmackSmack came into Thursday’s preseason opener making just 72 percent of his field goal attempts in practice. Only three kicks ended up counting, but the rookie responded by making all four of his attempts in Pittsburgh. His first attempt was a 58-yarder that split the uprights but was negated by a roughing the snapper penalty. However, Smack got another chance from 58 yards just before halftime and drilled that one as well. His other two makes were right down the middle from 37 and 38 yards. There’s still a long way to go before he’s named the kicker for Week 1, but this was exactly the performance you wanted to see after an up-and-down start to training camp. This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: 6 standouts from Packers' preseason loss to the Steelers0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 21 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -
رابطAPNEWS.COMHeavy rain causes flooding near Tokyo that kills 4 and disrupts train and air travelRecord-breaking torrential rain floods a road, causing a car to stall, in Ichikawa, Chiba prefecture, Japan, on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026. (Kyodo News via AP)2026-08-14T02:53:16Z TOKYO (AP) — Record-breaking rainfall that pounded cities east of Tokyo overnight flooded roads and dozens of homes, stranded thousands of people, caused power outages and left at least four people dead and one missing. The Japan Meteorological Agency downgraded its most severe warning for heavy rain in more than a dozen municipalities in Chiba prefecture as rain subsided Friday morning but forecast more rain later in the day.Photos and television footage showed widespread damage after daylight, with homes, cars and parts of railway tracks flooded with muddy water. The Ground Self Defense Force said it dispatched buses to pick up about 4,000 stranded people who stayed overnight at the Soga train station, a local route that also serves Tokyo Disney. The theme park did not report any damage. Thousands more people were stuck at the Narita airport serving the Tokyo region, with trains out of the area stopped. Hundreds of people took shelter overnight at the Chiba prefectural government building. The prefecture said four people were found dead and another person was missing. The victims included a man found floating on a flooded road in Ichikawa city and a woman who had been stuck in a flooded car in Sakura city. Another person pulled from a flooded car in Kashiwa city was presumed dead. More than 80 homes were flooded in the prefecture and nearly 230,000 residents across the prefecture were advised to take shelter, Chiba officials said. The torrential rain and flooding also knocked out power to about 23,000 homes Friday morning, down from 68,000 earlier, according to the TEPCO Power Grid. رابطSPORTS.YAHOO.COMNiners rookie WR De'Zhaun Stribling introduces himself with 63 receiving yards in preseason openerThe San Francisco 49ers are facing some major questions at wide receiver following. De’Zhaun Stribling is looking like an answer. The rookie second-rounder was the breakout star of the Niners’ preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday, posting seven receptions and 63 receiving yards on eight targets.Half of his yards came on a highlight-reel sideline catch in the second quarter.DE’ZHAUN STRIBLING IS LEGIT 🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/mI8JBDkkez— Sleeper49ers (@SleeperSF49ers) August 14, 2026The Niners selected Stribling 33rd overall out of Ole Miss in April, adding him to a wide receiver corps that was, and still is, conspicuously missing All-Pro Brandon Aiyuk last season. Jauan Jennings led all Niners wideouts in yards last year and left in free agency for the Minnesota Vikings. Ricky Pearsall had the second-most and is out for the season with a PCL tear. That doesn’t mean the receiver room is empty now, though. The Niners brought in a pair of veterans in Mike Evans and Christian Kirk during the offseason, and recently welcomed back Deebo Samuel too.Kirk is the youngest of that trio at 29 years old, though, so finding some younger blood was needed. Stribling was considered a bit of a reach at No. 33 — Yahoo Sports had him as the No. 68 prospect in this year’s draft — but he’s got legitimate speed with a 4.36-second 40-yard dash, good size at 6-foot-2 and was a featured player on an Ole Miss team that reached the College Football Playoff semifinal.Combine his preseason opener performance with a good review from quarterback Brock Purdy in training camp, and you have the makings of a good start to a professional career.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 7 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDetroit Lions injury updates: Good news on Ennis RakestrawAug 13, 2026; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Cincinnati Bengals running back Tahj Brooks (25) runs with the ball against Detroit Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (2) in the first half at Paycor Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Katie Stratman-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect The Detroit Lions had a couple of injury scares during their preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. But it appears it’s mostly—if not, all—good news for Detroit. After the game, Lions coach Dan Campbell said that Ennis Rakestraw appears to have avoided a major injury. At the start of the second quarter, Rakestraw took some friendly fire from linebacker Devin White, and a few plays later he made a low tackle on a play and did not initially come up. After walking off the field under his own power and going into the medical tent, he went into the locker room and did not return. However, Rakestraw got an x-ray which showed no structural damage, and Campbell says it could be something as small as an arm contusion.“It’s not major. It ended up being—it’s not a head shot—we just think he got a little contusion in the arm,” Campbell said. “It kinda made it numb, so I think he’ll be alright.”Later in the second quarter, third-year defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo suffered an injury and did not return. Campbell downplayed the injury but did admit he may be entering concussion protocol.“He just got a little bit of a—got his bell rung a little bit,” Campbell said. “So he could be (in) concussion protocol—but I don’t feel like any of those (injuries) are serious.”The last player injured could be the one that may be more serious. Lions safety Loren Strickland came up limping while chasing down a receiver in the second half. Campbell said he’s still hopeful for Strickland, but they need to do some imaging first. “I think all of those guys are okay. Strickland, I think, right now is the one that’s going to be—don’t know. We’ve got to get an image on that,” Campbell said. Overall, that’s all pretty good news to get out of Cincinnati with minimal injuries.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 52 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMike Vrabel expresses confidence in Andy Borregales after 3-miss performanceAug 13, 2026; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots place kicker Andy Borregales (36) lines up his field goal kick against the Indianapolis Colts during the first half at Gillette Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Eric Canha-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect With 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Andy Borregales had a chance to break a 13-13 tie and give his team a win in the preseason opener over the Indianapolis Colts. However, the New England Patriots’ place kicker hooked the 49-yard attempt to the left and had to watch the ball sail pass the upright. It wasn’t the first time this happened. Borregales had already missed two of his four previous field goal attempts, sending a 56-yarder and 55-yarder wide to the left in the first and third periods, respectively. After the game, head coach Mike Vrabel was pretty straight-forward in his assessment of the situation.“We expect him to make them,” he said. “That’s pro football. They’re banging them in from 60 yards. They have two kickers on their roster. Andy knows we have to make those field goals.”While Vrabel’s answer was blunt, he did later express confidence in his team’s second-year kicker.“We’re going to have misses, we’re going to have mistakes in everything we do. We just need to be able to come back,” he noted. “We need to be able to bounce back. We need to be able to answer. Guys are going to drop a pass. Guys are going to miss a block. We’re going to miss a kick. We just have to not let those things pile up.“Andy’s been really good with that, and I would anticipate him getting back to work and really start to focus. Maybe it was a footwork thing or trying to over-swing, but I have confidence in Andy. You want to be able to make those. We got in a position to win the football game, and you got to be able to make them.”Borregales joined the Patriots as a sixth-round selection in last year’s draft, and as a rookie won the kicking competition against former practice squad member Parker Romo. However, his career got off to a rocky start: he missed his first career field goal attempt and the following week shanked a couple of extra points.Nonetheless, the Patriots showed trust in him. Borregales kicked a 53-yard game-winning field goal later that same game against the Dolphins, and went on to split the uprights on his next 37 combined attempts. He was a bit more shaky down the stretch but still remained a valuable contributor while making 81.6% of his field goals and 96.8% of his extra points as a rookie.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 59 مشاهدة 0 معاينة -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRecapping Anthony Richardson's performance in Colts v. PatriotsAnthony Richardson played the entire first half in the Indianapolis Colts' preseason opener against the New England Patriots, and he put together what may have been his best performance of training camp.Richardson finished the first half by completing 11-of-14 passes for 145 yards. Under Richardson, the Colts' offense was able to generate several chunk plays, with four players recording one reception of at least 16 yards. We also saw Richardson's ability to impact the game with the ball in his hands, rushing for 53 yards on six attempts with a touchdown. In the final minutes of the first half, Richardson led a scoring drive and put the Colts in field goal range at the end of half. That said, there were ups and downs as well. While Richardson's interception should have instead been a reception by Coleman Owen, the pass was slightly off target and into tight coverage. He also fumbled once as a ball carrier. But overall, a promising performance for the fourth-year quarterback who is competing with Riley Leonard for the backup role. Now, the biggest thing for Richardson will be maintaining this consistency moving forward. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Recapping Anthony Richardson's performance in Colts v.
