SPORTS.YAHOO.COMClyde’s Colts recapLet me start by saying that I did not get the best look at the game. I got the Pat’s feed, so I heard too much McCoruty twin banter, along with another guy who talked with a big Bob’s Discount Furniture sign behind him. I am not sure that I heard a Colt player called out by name and I am sure that I did not see a highlight of a good play by a Colt player. It was a dreadful broadcast that I eventually turned down and just accessed my roster after most plays, to see who did something good or bad.It is not likely that anyone won a job Thursday night, unless they were in pretty good shape already. If it were me, I would say that one guy lost a job and that would CB Edwards. You have to be pretty weak to be targeted during a preseason game. I’d keep Jaylon Jones in a heartbeat over him right now. One of a couple of things I liked, was seeing pass rushers from a standing position. It looked like both Curry and Gumbs were allowed to do that, so maybe they are hoping that one of them has some natural instincts that can be unleashed situationally. I thought both did a good job of not giving away an edge, but I thought they looked tentative on backside pursuit. I get that they have likely been drilled about not giving up backside contain, but it seemed weird to not see them aggressive.Another thing I liked was the screen game. Those plays had to be in response to the way D’s played us post Pittsburgh. We have been bad at that aspect for quite some time, but I think that they have figured a little something out. If they can get some good results on tape, it could slow some teams down once we get to the regular season, but more likely they will have show they can beat blitzes once the bright lights come on.As far as AR goes, it was more of the same. He looks better with his legs than with his arm. Those that want to support him should take the approach that they take with Ballard. He committed two turnovers and scored 7 points on the way to halftime deficit. If you are a bottom line type, that would not be seen as a positive. I think I would tell him that I’d like to put in some packages/gadgets for him. If he is not receptive, I’d let him know he is the 3rd string QB and that he’d remain a Colt until free agency next year. It seems like he’d be a good guy to salt games away with the running game. He would at least be relevant and seen by other teams. It is not like Leonard was good either. I do think that he could be groomed to be a good, cheap, backup for three years.I thought we showed a little better covering the middle of the field, Edwards excluded. Not perfect and not against number ones, but it still looked better than recent versions of the defense. I thought Boettcher looked active. I think Wohlers may always struggle to stay on the field, as he either has bad technique, or a death wish. I also think that we have enough pass catchers. Consider that our top six WR did not play, nor did Warren and it looked like all who were targeted, answered the bell when called upon.Hats off to Freeland for going the whole way. The O-line didn’t look like a weakness, with only Travis getting a few snap among the depth chart’s first teamers. Maybe they didn’t blow open holes, but the pocket looked clean enough to me and they evidently did a pretty good job of selling for the screens. In the grand scheme of things, not much was decided, but it was successful enough for health and six penalties for 60 yards is not cause for alarm. Mission accomplished.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 75 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMIowa football duo to miss significant time due to injuryIn his media day press conference on Friday, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz revealed that a pair of Hawkeyes have suffered significant injuries.Third-year defensive back Kyler Gerardy and SMU transfer receiver Lance Beeghley are both expected to miss significant time and maybe the entire 2026 season altogether."Injury-wise, overall, not too bad. We have two guys right now that may miss a big part of the season if not the entire season. Kyler Gerardy unfortunately was injured Wednesday and Lance Beeghley, a receiver, was hurt about a week ago. Those two guys, we’ll see how that goes. Will know more as we move forward. Otherwise, we have some camp issues like every year. Nothing really noteworthy and to comment on," Ferentz said.Iowa also announced on Friday that transfer safety Tyler Brown is dealing with a muscle strain.Gerardy saw action in four games last season, logging 29 defensive snaps and five special teams snaps, per Pro Football Focus. The 6-foot, 199-pound defensive back recorded his first career solo tackle during Iowa's 37-0 shutout at Wisconsin last season.Beeghley, a 6-foot-2, 197-pound receiver, was a three-star signee in SMU's 2024 class, per 247Sports. The New Braunfels, Texas, product did not see any game action over his two seasons at SMU.In high school, Beeghley set school records for career receiving touchdowns and yards, finishing with nearly 2,500 receiving yards. Beeghley hauled in 62 catches for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHow Louisville football's Jeff Brohm felt about Cards' first scrimmageThe dog days of August are ramping up, with Louisville’s football season opener against Ole Miss just three weeks away. The Cardinals had their first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday, Aug. 15. The offense won the day, according to head coach Jeff Brohm.“(We) probably threw the ball more a little in this scrimmage than we had,” he said. “But overall, (there were) good things and bad, like everything. We’ve just got to get back to work. We play a good opponent that'll test us in a lot of ways, especially with their tempo and their quarterback and running back. And our defense will have to play way better.”Louisville’s offensive unit is full of playmakers at every skill position and is bolstered by the best tight end room Brohm has had at UofL. While projected starter Brody Foley missed time after suffering a concussion, Jaleel Skinner, Justyn Reid and Julius Miles provide depth and have traded time playing with the first-team unit. After six open practices and a closed scrimmage, here’s what we've learned about Louisville:Louisville defense still has work to doWhile the Cardinals’ defense has largely been impressive so far this fall, Brohm was less than pleased with the group’s performance in the first scrimmage of the preseason. He said they gave up too many big plays and “had a couple busts here and there that really cost us.” It’s especially of concern with Brohm keeping Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, the SEC’s passing yards leader last season, in mind. He attributed some of the errors to a lack of sustained mental toughness and focus throughout the scrimmage.“Probably half of it is execution,” Brohm added. “Half of it is we’ve got to reexamine the play-call and make sure that we're in something a little sounder, a little safer. Learn and manage when to take our risk and make sure when we do, that we hit. And if not, then we’ve got to pull that back."Louisville has fewer quarterbacks, but they're more capableFor as disappointed as Brohm was with the defense’s performance, it was also indicative of the offense’s production. Quarterback play this season is arguably the best Brohm has had at Louisville. Although the Cardinals normally carry as many quarterbacks as possible — they once played nine in a game — they have only five rostered signal-callers and have mainly repped three during spring and fall practices.Projected starter Lincoln Kienholz, Davin Wydner and Briggs Cherry have all competed well and made big-time plays for what’s expected to be an explosive offense.“I thought Lincoln had a good day, and it was good because he's had a good camp, and I think he's getting a better grasp,” Brohm said. “We're going to have to make sure we have enough in there to challenge the defense and enough in there where he feels comfortable with to execute early on, where he can handle not only executing, but calling the play and mastering what everyone's supposed to do. Davin's continuing to improve. Briggs can throw the football, just understanding what we're doing.”Louisville kicking game is coming alongDuring Louisville’s Aug. 6 media day, Brohm expressed a lack of confidence in the team’s kicking game. The group had added kicker Garth White from Rhode Island and, most recently, Australian punter Niall Hayes, but it still struggled in the earlier practices. Louisville focused on kicking more throughout the practices by adding periods of competition between the kickers. On Thursday, Aug. 13, for example, Louisville attempted four field goals. If the kickers had more makes than misses, the offense won. If had more misses, the defense won.Carson Hilbert missed the first field goal, but Nick Keller, Bode Shoaps and White hit theirs, resulting in the defense having to do pushups. Competitions were also created between the kickers to see who could kick the furthest.“We have some new segments there, and we’ve just got to work through it,” Brohm said. “We put them in as many tough situations we have and continue to do that for the next three weeks. They’ve got to, at some point, just believe and have confidence in themselves. There's going to be guys out there that haven't played a whole lot. So they got to know that they're battle-tested, they're well-prepared and they have to go out there and believe in it, and go get it done. And I think they can.”Miles, Harbin are Louisville's latest moveable piecesLast year, Louisville moved Shaun Boykins from receiver to running back. It came in handy at the end of the year when the Cardinals were down to Boykins, who transferred to Delaware State during the offseason, and Braxton Jennings, a walk-on who has since earned a scholarship. With some depth and injury concerns at running back, St. Xavier High School graduate receiver Marlon Harbin was moved over to and practiced with the running backs this week. The Mr. Football finalist played both receiver and running back in high school, totaling 688 receiving yards, 10 touchdown receptions, 355 rushing yards and 11 more scores on the ground.Julius Miles, too, is training at multiple positions. Originally signed as a tight end, Miles has been viewed as a weapon out wide in the red zone and has taken some first-team receiver reps. It’s well within his skillset, too: He was Florida’s No. 86 wide receiver in the 2026 recruiting cycle, per 247Sports, and the Sunshine State’s No. 21 tight end, per ESPN. Louisville has been successful in finding the right spots for its best athletes. The versatility that Miles and Harbin bring as true freshmen will not only be vital for the Cardinals, it'll help the two get on the field sooner.“Marlon will do whatever you ask, and he goes hard,” Brohm said. “He just has that knack and feel for the game. And you saw that when he played in high school. Julius is just a big athletic target. He’s got to get a little stronger and a little sturdier, but he likes to compete. He loves ball, and he can make plays for us. I think both those guys have a very bright future here.”Louisville uses caution on managing Isaac Brown’s repsSome people raised concerns when running back Isaac Brown didn’t practice to start fall camp. The junior phenom has since been a full participant in the Cardinals’ practices. Brohm said Brown “didn’t do as much today” during the scrimmage.“We'll continue to work through and get him (Brown) back where he's feeling exactly the way we want,” he added. “We've had some other running backs with some few strains, too, because the workload has been pretty good, so we'll have to manage that. But it's something they all can come back from and get healthy.”The Cardinals have been intentional in limiting Brown’s practice reps to make sure he’s ready and durable for the season. Health became a problem last season when he played through a lower leg injury before it kept him out of four games. With Brown looking to put together a full season’s worth of tape, he’ll need to stay healthy. The biggest challenge of the season will come in the first game. Ole Miss’s rushing defense ranked 12th in the SEC, but it lost seven starters, and defensive coordinator Pete Golding was elevated to head coach.Reach Louisville football, women's basketball and baseball beat writer Alexis Cubit at acubit@gannett.com and follow her on X at @Alexis_Cubit. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTexas LB Ty’Anthony Smith did not participate in Saturday’s scrimmageDALLAS, TEXAS - OCTOBER 11: Ty'Anthony Smith #26 of the Texas Longhorns reacts in the second half against the Oklahoma Sooners at Cotton Bowl on October 11, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Tim Warner/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Texas Longhorns went through the most important practice of preseason camp, holding a scrimmage on Saturday morning that reportedly did not include junior linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith, according to reports from Inside Texas and Orangebloods.More details about Smith’s status with the team were not immediately available ahead of a media availability with head coach Steve Sarkisian on Saturday morning. During that availability, Sarkisian revealed that Smith was one of a number of players who missed the scrimmage due to the flu, which has impacted multiple players. Smith also missed practice time this week. After a breakout performance in the Citrus Bowl enabled by opt outs that included a team-high nine tackles (eight solo), one tackle for a loss, one quarterback hurry and two interceptions, Smith was expected to play a big role for the Longhorns in 2026. Instead, the coaching staff went out and landed two projected starters from the NCAA transfer portal in former Pitt standout Rasheem Biles and Florida State transfer Justin Cryer.A consensus four-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class ranked as the No. 350 player overall and the No. 27 linebacker, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Smith was a late addition after flipping from Texas A&M on Early Signing Day.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 34 Views 0 önizleme -

WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMA gay basher’s brutal crime haunted him. His penance turned him into a crusader against hate.(Dedicated to the memory of Charles O. Howard, 1961-1984.) Over the years, we have lost a number of good people of all social identities to hate-related murder. This article that I wrote in summer 1994 for World: The Journal of the Unitarian Universalist Association seems as though I wrote it just yesterday, since we continually witness accounts of similar incidents of senseless violence. I invite you to come back with me to a not-so-distant past — one that mirrors our present. Related Gay couple shot & one left in critical condition with wound to the head in bizarre road rage attack There are pivotal events in everyone’s life that forever separate before from after. For Jim Baines of Bangor, Maine, a pivotal event took place one July evening in 1984, when he and two friends attacked two gay men, killing one. The three assailants were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to a youth detention center. Today, at 25, Baines has turned his life around, and he is attempting to repay society for his crime. On occasion, he takes a voluntary unpaid leave from his sales job at an electrical supply company in Bangor, and travels to schools with state police officers to talk to students about hate crimes. Dive deeper every day Join our newsletter for thought-provoking commentary that goes beyond the surface of LGBTQ+ issues Subscribe to our Newsletter today I caught up with Baines at Biddeford Middle School in Biddeford, Maine where he gave a presentation to an 8th-grade assembly. The day was sparkling, with a hint of summer in the air. Over 100 students noisily entered a large music room with instruments and music stands scattered around. A teacher called the group to order saying, “I’d like to introduce two special guests – Detective Sargent Mike Harriman of the Maine State Police and his guest, Jim Baines. They’re here to speak about some issues I think are relevant to us all – respect for each other, consideration, and tolerance.” “I remember closing my eyes, thinking, ‘How could these young people have learned so much hatred in such a short time?'” Sargent Harriman began the presentation by defining a “hate crime” as “a criminal offense motivated by bias against another person’s race, religion, ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.” He cited a couple of recent examples of crimes involving race at area high schools, and then he showed two short videos – “Arresting Prejudice,” a police training film, and “Crimes of Hate,” a series by a local television station detailing Jim Baines’s story. Baines, about five feet, nine inches tall with sandy hair then walked tentatively to the front of the room. The students were quiet and attentive as he spoke. “The story I’m about to tell is true, very true,” he said nervously. “It’s about one night that changed my life drastically.” For most of that July day in 1984, Baines, then 15-years-old, had been drinking beer with two friends, Daniel Ness, 17, and Shawn Mabry, 16. That night, they took the car of one of the boys’ parents and drove around Bangor from party to party. “As the night went on,” said Baines, “we ran out of beer. And it was during our quest for more beer that our problems began.” They left a party at about 10:00 pm, along with two young women, ages 15 and 17 — one had a fake ID. Downtown, they drove across a bridge over a small stream and spotted two men walking arm in arm whom the teens recognized as local gay men. The two, Charlie Howard, 23, and Roy Ogden, 20, had just left a meeting of Interweave, a support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist of Bangor. Nighttime in Bangor, Maine | Melinda Fawver via Shutterstock The boys stopped the car, got out, and according to Baines, “began to push them around and really started to assault them,” demanding that they acknowledge their homosexuality. One of the gay men yelled to the other to run. Ogden got away; Howard, however, tripped on a curb, falling to the ground near the railing of the bridge. The three teens surrounded him, punching and kicking as he held onto the railing and screamed for help. One of the teens then gave the order to throw Howard from the bridge. When Howard heard this, he cried out in panic, saying he could not swim. His plea only enlivened the boys, who dislodged Howard’s hands from the railing and, with a mighty heave, tossed him into the stream some 20 feet below. The boys then ran back to their car. “We were feeling good, excited,” Baines told the students. “We thought it was a good accomplishment at the time, and we yelled and screamed as we drove off.” Afterwards, they even bragged to a friend that they had “jumped a f** and beat the s**t out of him and then threw him into the stream.” The young women in the car, on the other hand, were quite upset and warned the boys that the man could have drowned. At home later that evening, Baines had a hard time falling asleep. The next morning, the other boys woke him up and told him Howard had died. Baines felt as if he had been plunged into a nightmare: “I couldn’t believe it. I kept saying, ‘No way.’” Soon, local police officers arrested him, Ness, and Mabry and charged them with murder. According to a report from the medical examiner, the cause of death was drowning, with acute bronchial asthma as a probable contributing factor. Baines knew his life would never be the same again. “I remember sitting in the detective’s office,” he told the students, “my head in my hands, crying and just hoping the walls would swallow me up. How could I face my mother, knowing I did something so terrible? Then my mother walked in. We embraced. We both began to cry.” The following Monday night, the Reverend Richard Forcier and congregation president Lois Reed led a memorial service at the Unitarian Universalist sanctuary in Bangor. Over 200 attendees celebrated Charlie Howard’s life, and voiced outrage over his vicious murder. They then marched over the bridge where Charlie had been murdered, and in keeping with Charlie’s mother’s wishes, dropped a white rose tied with a lavender ribbon into the stream below. An image of Charlie Howard from his memorial. The procession terminated in a candlelight vigil at the Bangor police station. All along the line of the march, amid the marchers’ grief and rage, hecklers shouted homophobic epithets. A few weeks after the murder, the words “F**s Jump Here” were painted on the bridge. Four days after Howard’s death, the Reverend Richard Hasty led another memorial service at the First Parish Society, Unitarian Universalist, in Portland, Maine, followed by a protest march down Congress Street. Onlookers there also heckled marchers from the sidelines. Few in the community were willing to condemn such bigotry. Forcier, in an attempt to bring Bangor together, sent a letter to the leaders of area religious congregations to join him in discussing Howard’s murder and speaking out against intolerance. The response was deadening silence, save for the angry replies of a few fundamentalist ministers. A few months later, a local school board unanimously voted to cancel a proposed “Tolerance Day,” claiming the appearance on a scheduled panel of the president of the Maine Lesbian and Gay Political Alliance would have threatened the “safety, order, and security of the high school.” Three years later, a US Department of Justice report concluded, “Homosexuals are probably the most frequent victims” of hate violence. Things haven’t changed very much since then. Lois Reed, a member of the Unitarian Universalist in Bangor for 21 years and congregation president from 1984 to 1987 has led an annual service on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of Howard’s death. “Every year, after the memorial service,” she told me in a telephone interview, “we march to the bridge. People say some words of remembrance and throw flowers into the stream. Every year, except last year, we hear taunts from the streets, usually in the form of four-letter words. Sometimes, cars circle the block and people yell at us. The sign outside our church announcing their memorial service is often spray-painted with the word ‘f**got.’” Charlie Howard was Reed’s friend. She remembers him as “a good person, though he could be absolutely infuriating at times. He was very frail in appearance and was targeted because he was seen as vulnerable.” After their arraignment, Howard’s killers were released into their parents’ custody. According to a Boston Globe article, Thomas Goodwin, the assistant attorney general chosen to prosecute the case, said he had recommended their release because they were “not a threat to the community,” and had not intended to kill Howard. Sargent Thomas Placella, the chief detective on the case, in published accounts at the time of the murder, echoed this reasoning saying, “I’m not trying to lessen the severity of the crimes, but it’s not like these were axe murderers. These people came from respectable families who own property in the city off Bangor.” Three months later, Mabry, Ness, and Baines were convicted of manslaughter and given indeterminate sentences at the Maine Youth Center in South Portland. During Baines’s two years there, he continued his studies, and following release, he returned to high school and graduated with his class in 1987. | Dennis MacDonald via Shutterstock Charlie Howard’s murder is remarkable only by virtue of its unremarkability. Gay-bashing, of course, is not limited to Maine, a state that boasted the lowest murder rate in the US at the time of Howard’s vicious attack. The year of Howard’s killing, 90% of the 2,000 contacted for a survey by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (a civil right group based in Washington, DC) reported having been victimized because of their sexual identity. More than one in 10 had been threatened with violence. Victimization occurred at home, at school, and at other community sites: 45% of the males and 25% of the females had been harassed or attacked in high school or junior high school because they were perceived as lesbian or gay. About one-third of the respondents had been assaulted verbally, while more than one in 15 had been physically abused by family members. Three years later, a US Department of Justice report concluded, “Homosexuals are probably the most frequent victims” of hate violence. Like his crime, Baines himself was unremarkable. He told students at Biddeford Middle School, “I was not unlike any of you here. I was a grade-conscious, wanting to be popular, 15-year-old high school kid. I played football, basketball; I hung out with my friends on weekends. My grades were okay, and I was really looking forward to going to college.” Ness and Mabry were also “typical” middle-class teens, Ness a promising art student, and Mabry a karate enthusiast and star of the city hockey league. Why would three young men who seemed to have so much going for them feel compelled to commit a crime of hate? “As I look back now,” said Baines, “I don’t think I was ever homophobic.” His primary motivation, he said, was the desire for popularity. Even as he was beating Howard, he had thought, “My friends will look up to me for this, and I’ll be able to talk about it in school for a couple of years. “In high school,” he continued, “no matter how popular you are, you worry about being popular.” “Gay-bashing was happening every day. And it was more than just five or six kids doing it…. The parents knew. I believe teachers even knew. But nobody thought it would turn into something so serious.” He went on to explain why he and his friends had targeted gays: “We thought these people were much different than us and that we would get away with it because it was accepted. I considered that person different than I, less than I….Just like in school, you have your bullies that pick on the little kids; it’s the same idea.” A female student raised her hand and said, “When we think of gays, we think of a limp wrist, weird voice, and slurred speech and stuff, and we don’t realize that some people we hang around with every day could be homosexuals.” Another female student added, “I think a lot of people hate Blacks or women or gays or whatever just because they’re not a white male.” A male student asked Baines, “Do you think education in the schools about gay people would have changed your view” Baines pondered the question briefly and answered, “I look back and think, ‘If I would have been more educated about homosexuality, I would have been aware that it is there, and it’s something that shouldn’t be treated violently.’ I guess, if there was more education in that area, it would’ve probably made me think differently about the whole night.” In fact, Baines had gotten the opposite kind of education. “I did know that [homosexuality] was something my family looked at as unacceptable,” he remembered, “my family as well as the police.” A shot of modern-day Bangor, Maine in 2023. | Shutterstock Given the lack of appropriate education, it’s not surprising that, as Baines said, “gay-bashing was happening every day. And it was more than just five or six kids doing it.” In fact, it was considered an after-school extracurricular activity. Baines confided that local youth often stole from gay people, threw rocks at their cars, and once even pulled a gay man from his car and sent it crashing down a hill. “The parents knew,” he said. “I believe teachers even knew. But nobody thought it would turn into something so serious.” To Baines’s surprise, even during his trial, a man approached him wanting to shake his hand to commend him for his act. Forcier, the UU minister, confirmed Baines’s view that the community was intolerant. “Articles appeared in The Bangor Daily News likening homosexuality with being sexually active with animals,” he said. “The general climate fostered [gay-bashing], making it somehow permissible.” According to Jack McDevitt, Northeastern University professor and co-author of the book Hate Crimes: The Rising Tide of Bigotry and Bloodshed, young white males like Baines, Ness, and Mabry, between 16 and 21 and traveling in groups, fit the profile of typical gay-bashers. “Some young men fear and don’t understand gay and lesbian people,” he told me in a telephone interview. “In American society, gays and lesbians are the only communities that are still okay to hate.” He cited local and statewide efforts to pass anti-gay laws. Parents and clergy attempt to restrict classroom discussion of gay and lesbian experiences in the schools, and they ban books on the topic from school libraries. “The message kids are getting from society,” he concluded, “is ‘we don’t care about gay and lesbian people.’” Baines credits his change in attitude about gays and lesbians to a number of factors, including the therapy he received in the youth detention center. “They helped us identify our bad thoughts to monitor our thinking process,” he explained. “They made us look at the pain we caused and walk in our victims’ shoes.” In addition, since his release, he has made friends with gay and lesbian people. “I still loathe the Jim Baines who killed my friend.” Asked if Ness and Mabry had undergone similar changes of heart, Baines said he has lost touch with them. But about seven years ago, Lois Reed was at the UU of Bangor when a young man called, asking for the location of Charlie Howard’s grave. “At first, he didn’t identify himself,” said Reed. “We talked for about two hours, and he finally told me he was Shawn Mabry. I told him I knew, and I asked why he wanted to know about the grave site. I said that there are people who would think he was trying to get the information so he could desecrate it. But he said he wouldn’t, that he was just curious.” “He never apologized to me for what he did, but he asked me how I felt about the three of them. I said I wish them well and hope they will go on to lead productive and decent lives. I also said I hope they truly understand what they have done.” During Baines’s presentation at Biddeford Middle School, a male student asked if he had apologized to Howard’s family. For Baines, this remained an unfinished chapter of the story. Sargent Harriman explained that soon after the murder, people in the community had made threatening phone calls to Howard’s mother and had thrown eggs at her house, and she had since moved from the area. “I’ve made attempts to contact with her,” said Baines, “but with no success.” Throughout his presentation, Baines returned to his primary motive for speaking out. “Gay-bashing is wrong. Harassment is wrong,” he stressed. “People are people no matter what we think they are, no matter what they do, or no matter how different they seem to us. None of us really has the right to judge somebody else.” He expressed remorse for his actions saying, “If I live to be 90, I will never forget what happened that night. Gov. Kathy Hochul, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer were among those who also condemned the attack.Additional police security was added and Shabbat services continued Saturday.“We might want to be focusing on the beauty of our liturgy and the sanctity of Shabbat, and somehow the feeling of the imperfect and cruel world keeps flooding in,” Rabbi Rebecca Thau told congregants.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 36 Views 0 önizleme

(Photo by Bobby Goddin/Getty Images)Bobby Goddin via Getty ImagesAfter missing the 100 freestyle world record by the smallest margin in swimming last night, Kate Douglass broke the 50m freestyle world record in prelims Saturday morning, and she crushed it. Touching in 23.49, Douglass torched through 50 meters from the moment she left the blocks.ANOTHER WORLD RECORD!!! KATE DOUGLASS JUST TORCHED THE WR IN THE 50 FREESTYLE IN PRELIMS AT PAN PACS!!!SWIMMING IS ON FIRE RIGHT NOW!!! pic.twitter.com/dUH5jY9nJC— Kyle Sockwell (@kylesockwell) August 15, 2026Douglass’ swim marks the latest swing in a world record that's changed hands between Douglass and training partner Gretchen Walsh all summer long. The two former Virginia standouts have been trading the fastest 50 free in history back since Douglass first broke the record in June.Walsh had the record most recently, and now it's back with Douglass, fueling a rivalry between the two training partners that has quietly become one of the most compelling storylines in the sport this year. The swim adds an extraordinary week for Douglass at Pan Pacs. She opened the meet with a silver medal in the 50 butterfly, then teamed up with Walsh, Van Mathias and Will Modglin to break the world record in the mixed 4x100 medley relay that same night. Her 100 breaststroke bid on day two ended in fourth after McKenzie Siroky continued her upset run over the field, but Douglass bounced back in a big way on day three, leading off the American women's 4x100 freestyle relay in 51.69, the second-fastest 100 free in history, to help the U.S. to a new American Record and gold. Now, with a world record in the 50 free, Douglass has been part of a world record on two separate occasions at this meet alone, and it was almost three. She'll look to back up her 23.49 in tonight's final, where the pressure shifts from breaking the record to defending it in a head-to-head final duel with Walsh. Given how both women have swum throughout the week, the crowd in Irvine has endless reason to be excited for the showdown between Douglass and Walsh. who has to answer this swim the way she's answered every one of Douglass's all summer, will be watching as closely as anyone. The women’s 50m freestyle Pan Pacs final is set to commence at approximately 10:35 EST (7:35 PT) streaming live on Peacock and USA Swimming’s YouTube Channel.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 51 Views 0 önizleme

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCowboys’ secondary unfolding as best-case scenario in training campWe didn’t know what we were getting from the Dallas Cowboys’ secondary in 2026. We knew Christian Parker had intricate plans for schematic change. We knew new players were expected to compete, and rehabbing players were hoping to return. We even knew what things were supposed to look like on paper. What we didn’t know is if any of it, or even some of it, was going to work out.Parker, a first-time defensive coordinator, was more a projection than proven entity. DaRon Bland and Shevon Revel were rehabbing cornerbacks with an uncertain permanent physical status. Malik Hooker and P.J. Locke were safeties with something to prove. While Caleb Downs and Jalen Thompson were new faces with massive expectations. With so many questions in the secondary, the entire situation had the potential to go extremely well or devastatingly horrible. Halfway through training camp, things are going pretty darn well.At the top of the food pyramid, Parker is completely as advertised. Not only does he look like Vic Fangio 2.0 in scheme, but his knowledge and ability to educate look next level. He’s instilling work ethic and accountability across the unit and his highly complicated scheme is getting digested at an impressive rate. After avoiding the PUP list at the start of camp, DaRon Bland has looked shockingly healthy in Oxnard. He may not be on a full workload, but he appears ahead of the curve and ready to reclaim the CB1 label that’s alluded him for two seasons.Similarly, Revel has exceeded all logical expectations. Last seen, he was quite possibly the worst cornerback in the NFL (see also: PFF grades), but a healthy offseason and tenacious attitude have made him a star in training camp. Even when players like George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb beat him in practice, he shows sticky coverage and elite physical ability. He bounces back with a vengeance, displaying the most important trait a cornerback can have: a short memory.Shavon Revel tells George Pickens “not this time” — effort and coverage is just outstanding. 🔥🔥🔥and that short-term memory to forget the last play that GP3 narrowly won.Revel is gonna be something. #Cowboyspic.twitter.com/Mh0QqubvJ0— Patrik [No C] Walker (@VoiceOfTheStar) August 8, 2026Hooker looks like he’s primed for a bounce-back year as a deep safety and Locke put an early camp injury scare behind him as he looks to be a fairly solid rotational option as safety. Even Julius Wood, a down-roster longshot, has been making a case for the final roster. With Downs being every bit as advertised as a safety-slot man hybrid, the backend is suddenly an embarrassment of riches for the Cowboys.Typically, when there’s an area of the team with this many questions, a fair number of those questions end in bad news. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe Marquette Men’s Lacrosse Single Season Goals ChartBobby O’Grady: Noted Good Goal Scorer | Marquette University By now, you should be more than familiar with our series of regularly updating leaderboards for various Marquette Golden Eagles sports accomplishments. Keep checking back to that link in the previous sentence for our charts as the seasons continue to churn through history and MU’s various teams continue to create new memories and accomplishments. Here, we take a look at the single season goals record for men’s lacrosse.Bobby O’Grady did not wrap up 2022 with the single season record for points, but he did knock down the program record for goals in a season. Before 2022, only Ryan McNamara had ever scored 40 goals in a season, and he did that exactly on the nose in 2016, the year MU won their first ever Big East championship. At the time, McNamara had become just the second Marquette player to ever record 35 goals in a season and the first to ever clear 37. O’Grady went flying right past the workhorse of Marquette’s first two NCAA tournament teams, and landed on 45 goals in MU’s 15 games in 2022. That makes him the first Marquette player to ever average a hat trick for an entire season. Up til now, Tyler Melnyk’s 2.57 per game in 2014 was the gold standard for the Blue and Gold. One year later, O’Grady took a run at breaking his own record. He ultimately fell short, finishing the campaign with 43 goals, but he accomplished something else instead. O’Grady is — even now, three years later — the only player in Marquette history to score 40 or more goals in two separate seasons. In 2025, O’Grady became the first Marquette player with 30 or more goals in three different seasons, and he’s the only player in MU history to tally at least 25 goals in each year of his four year career.O’Grady hasn’t been alone in redecorating this top 15 list in the past few seasons. Nolan Rappis now owns two of the seven best scoring seasons in MU history after back to back 30+ goal seasons. Carsen Brandt got into the action in the spring of 2026, putting up 27 goals and passing all but the 10 best seasons in MU history, all of which featured at least 30 goals. There’s a 50 goal season coming for Marquette men’s lacrosse eventually. Six men in the country scored at least 50 in 2026, and eight averaged at least a hat trick per game, just like O’Grady did back in 2022. That’s the kind of production you need to get there, you just need a season that goes on long enough to make it to the 50 goal barrier. We’ve seen a hat trick per game performance, so it’s only a matter of time before we see one happen again as the Golden Eagles put a postseason run together around it.Here’s what the chart looks like at the end of the 2026 season.View LinkFollow Anonymous Eagle on social mediaFacebook: AnonymousEagleInstagram: AnonymousEagleSBNBluesky: AnonymousEagle0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 51 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMLiverpool Legend “Excited” Ahead Of New SeasonLiverpool Legend “Excited” Ahead Of New SeasonRobbie Fowler sees Alexander Isak as key to Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool rebuildLiverpool enter the new season in a state familiar to all major clubs and yet uniquely tense when it happens at Anfield, poised between memory and reinvention, between the authority of what came before and the uncertainty of what comes next. In an interview with GiveMeSport, Robbie Fowler believes that uncertainty can become opportunity, particularly under Andoni Iraola, whose appointment has brought the promise of energy, aggression and a more direct sort of ambition.Fowler’s remarks, made at the launch of the Topps Flagship Premier League 2026/27 collection, sketched out an intriguing picture of where Liverpool might be headed. There was realism in it, because there had to be. Liverpool have changed manager, changed shape as a squad, and changed, too, in the wider imagination of the Premier League. Arne Slot’s title-winning first season in 2024/25 now feels a long way away after the collapse of 2025/26 and the upheaval that followed. Iraola arrives with a reputation for intensity and coherence, but also with the burden that attends any coach stepping into one of English football’s most exacting jobs.Fowler sounded energised by that prospect. “I mean, the obvious one is Liverpool,” he said. There is a telling simplicity in that answer. For all the noise that accompanies transition, Liverpool remain compelling because they have chosen a coach with a clear identity. Iraola’s Bournemouth side played with courage and without apology. They pressed hard, moved the ball forward early and asked questions of opponents before those opponents had settled into their own patterns. That sort of football can stir a crowd quickly. At Liverpool, where emotional momentum can become tactical momentum, it may matter more than most.Andoni Iraola brings clarity and riskFowler’s assessment of Iraola was shaped by the same qualities many observers admired at Bournemouth. “Probably excited, actually. When I watched Bournemouth last year, I think they were obviously a team who were easy on the eye, they were very attack-minded, the press was brilliant. So how they play the game is probably the way I want to see a team.”The phrase easy on the eye can sometimes be used lazily, as shorthand for something decorative. In this case, it feels closer to structural coherence. Iraola’s teams are legible. You can see what they are trying to do. The distances between players make sense. The pressing triggers are visible. The verticality is intentional rather than frantic. For Liverpool, after a season in which too much felt ragged and dislocated, that sort of tactical order may be every bit as important as any individual signing.Yet Fowler also acknowledged the obvious. “Obviously, coming to Liverpool from Bournemouth is a little bit different. The expectations and the pressures are probably a little bit different, so hopefully he gets a great start, gets a good run of results.”That is the unavoidable condition of elite management. Ideas are judged, eventually, by results. Time is always requested and rarely granted. Fowler, to his credit, made the case for patience, noting that any manager needs an opportunity to establish his methods. That is sensible, even if football has become increasingly hostile to the concept. Liverpool’s challenge will be to resist the temptation to interpret every awkward afternoon as evidence of deeper failure. Under a new coach, friction is not always a flaw. Sometimes it is the process by which a side learns a new language.Alexander Isak could define Liverpool’s attackThe most interesting section of Fowler’s comments concerned Alexander Isak. Liverpool’s £125m striker remains one of the most gifted forwards in the division, though his first campaign at Anfield never fully settled into rhythm. There were injuries, interruptions and the broader instability of a team that never found its own. What Fowler appears to see is a player whose skill set fits the new coach almost perfectly.“I think there’s a few. I’ll probably point to Rio, young Rio Ngumoha. I think he’s a wonderful player, very exciting.“But I think probably an outstanding player for me, who could probably progress under Andoni, is Alexander Isak. Probably didn’t have the greatest of first years as a Liverpool player, but we know how good he is. We’ve seen his form at Newcastle.Photo: IMAGO“I think the way Andoni wants to play, he wants his team to be massively on the front foot, get that ball forward as quickly as we possibly can, and someone like Isak could thrive on the way he wants his team to play.”This is where the tactical conversation sharpens. Isak thrives in stretched games. He is a striker of glide and incision, a forward who can receive early, attack space and turn transitional moments into something devastating. If Iraola can create repeated situations in which Liverpool recover the ball high and release quickly, Isak may find himself in the precise environment that best serves him. He does not need endless touches. He needs the right ones.Fowler went further, identifying pre-season conditioning as a decisive factor after an injury-hit year. “Yeah, massively excited. Look, I genuinely think he’s a wonderful player. I think when we saw him at Newcastle, I think any club, not just in the Premier League, but I think any club in the world would have taken him.“He’s a very, very good player, great goalscorer and, look, for whatever reason, it never materialised last year. I think that was maybe down to the conditioning of how he missed a lot of the pre-season.“It took a while, then we saw him starting to hit a little bit of form, and then unfortunately he gets that leg break. I’m glad he’s getting a pre-season behind him now because I think his fitness is good. He’s come out and said that himself; I think that’s documented. But as a forward, I think you need to be conditioned and getting the right sort of condition to play football.“I think getting that alertness and that liveliness into his game is massively important, so pre-season is massively important for him. He can be a difference.”That final phrase is a neat one. Difference-makers in title races are often discussed as abstractions, stars who somehow tilt seasons by force of aura alone. In reality, the difference is usually made by players whose qualities align with the team’s structure at precisely the right time. If Iraola’s football sharpens Liverpool’s transitions and raises the volume of service into dangerous areas, Isak may not merely improve, he may become central to the entire project. There is enough uncertainty around Liverpool to make the season compelling. There is enough talent to make it dangerous for everyone else. Fowler’s view seems to be that the path back to the top may not be immediate, but it is visible. In the Premier League, that is often the first requirement. The second is having the players to bring that vision to life. If Isak is healthy, if Iraola’s structure takes hold, and if Liverpool find just enough patience for the process, the story of their season may develop faster than many expect. Our ViewAs a Liverpool supporter, this report leaves you feeling curious more than anything, and that may be the right emotion for this team right now. There is obvious excitement around Andoni Iraola because his sides play with purpose, and after last season’s drift that matters a lot. You want to see Liverpool look like Liverpool again, aggressive, brave, direct when it is on, and organised without the ball. The part that really stands out is Fowler on Alexander Isak. That feels spot on. There is still a sense that many people have forgotten how good he is because his first year at Anfield never got going properly. If he gets a clean pre-season and the side starts feeding him in the right areas, he could explode. He has the movement, the touch and the calmness to become the focal point of this attack. It is also encouraging to hear Rio Ngumoha mentioned. Supporters always connect with young players who bring a bit of unpredictability. Liverpool need that spark in the squad.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 61 Views 0 önizleme -

(AP) — Several dozen people and their pets were rescued Saturday as floodwaters rose along the White River in Indianapolis, and emergency managers said that number was expected to climb as authorities in the city and elsewhere in central Indiana responded to what many described as historic flooding. The damage so far was concentrated along the river corridor from Hamilton County and into the northern Indianapolis suburbs. Farther east in Delaware County, sheriff deputies on Friday found the body of a 58-year-old woman who they believe died after trying to drive through floodwaters.Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett was joined by emergency managers during a briefing Saturday as he urged residents along the river to evacuate. A day earlier, he had declared a local emergency as heavy rains resulted in creeks and streams swelling throughout central Indiana. “This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime type floods,” Jacob Spence, director of Marion County Emergency Management, told The Associated Press. “So yeah, this is an unprecedented event and unfortunately we’re setting some new records.”Gov. Mike Braun has requested a presidential emergency declaration to free up federal resources to help with the response and recovery following days of record rainfall. Flash flood warnings and watches were issued across a swath of central Indiana on Saturday, and forecasters with the National Weather Service warned that more showers and thunderstorms would be moving into the area throughout the day. In Warren County, forecasters reported 2 inches of rain falling in the past six hours.Forecasters expected the White River to crest Saturday evening in the Indianapolis area, where National Guard vehicles were among those helping with the rescue efforts. An estimated 70 people had been rescued by midday, said Rita Reith, a spokesperson with the Indianapolis Fire Department. WWW.LGBTQNATION.COMRemember when Sonia Sotomayor had to correct a GOP judge who misunderstood a book for 5-year-olds?Supreme Court Justice Sam Alito, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, is getting called out online for completely misreading a book written for 5-year-olds. Oral arguments in Mahmoud v. Taylor were held this week. The case is about a group of parents who objected to so many parts of the curriculum at their Montgomery County, Maryland, schools that the school district revised its opt-out policy due to the “infeasibility of administering” all the opt-outs. The district decided to no longer allow parents to opt their kids out of parts of the curriculum. This led to the lawsuit, with some families saying that learning about LGBTQ+ people through books in the school violated their (the parents’) religious freedom. Related New Supreme Court case could force “Don’t Say Gay” laws on every school nationwide The parents objected to several books, but one in particular drew Alito’s attention: Uncle Bobby’s Wedding by Sarah Brannen. Brannen told Slate that the book was “written very simply, in language a 5-year-old can understand,” and yet somehow, Alito completely misread the plot. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Subscribe to our Newsletter today During oral arguments, attorney Eric Rassbach, who represented the parents, said that the book is objectionable to the parents because of the “mere exposure” of children to the idea of “two men getting married.” Alito decided that Rassbach’s argument wasn’t good enough and that the book is doing more than just exposing kids to the fact that two people of the same sex can get married. “I’ve read the book!” he said. “Do you think it’s fair to say that all that is done in Uncle Bobby’s Wedding is to expose children to the fact that there are men who marry other men?” “I don’t think anybody can read that and say, well, this is just telling children that there are occasions when men marry other men, that Uncle Bobby gets married to his boyfriend, Jamie. And everybody’s happy and … everyone accepts this—except for the little girl, Chloe, who has reservations about it. But her mother corrects her: ‘No, you shouldn’t have any reservations about this.’ As I said, it has a clear moral message.” That’s when Justice Sonia Sotomayor (appointed by President Barack Obama) jumped in because she, too, had read the picture book. But she understood the plot. “Wait a minute,” she started. “The reservation is about-“ But Alito cut her off and continued his tirade. Several minutes later, Sotomayor was able to go back to her point while questioning Rassbach. “The character, the child character, wasn’t objecting to same-sex marriage,” Sotomayor said. “She was objecting to the fact that marriage would take her uncle away from spending more time with her, correct?” Rassbach said that he didn’t know and that the character in the book found it “hard to express what their actual concerns are.” Sotomayor wasn’t going to let him get away with pretending like the children’s book was unclear on this point. She quoted the character Chloe saying, “He’ll have less time for me.” “It seems self-evident, isn’t it?” Sotomayor asked, apparently the only adult lawyer in the room who was able to understand the book. Alito later returned to discussing the book, saying that even though Sotomayor is right that Chloe was not chided by her mom for opposing same-sex marriage, the book still “subtly” tells kids that same-sex marriage “is a good thing.” Brannen told Slate that Sotomayor correctly read her book: “No one in the book has any problem with same-sex marriage. Everyone in the story supports Bobby and Jamie’s decision to marry, including Chloe.” Brannen said that she wondered if Alito was lying about having read the book, but then he quoted other parts of it during oral arguments, so she speculated about whether he was “being deliberately misleading.” Because the way he misread the book is significant when it comes to the legal arguments in the case: it’s one thing to say that a school can’t tell kids what view to have on a policy issue, like the legality of marriage equality, it’s another to say that a school can’t let kids know that LGBTQ+ people exist at all. That is, if the book involved a child being chided for objecting to marriage equality, the parents could argue that it’s political propaganda. But no one in the book objects to marriage equality at all. Brannen said that her book was actually about learning to deal with change and that same-sex marriage is presented as a normal part of life, an event that just happens to be the context for Chloe’s character growth. Alito didn’t seem to understand — either intentionally or not — that, for many Americans, same-sex couples getting married isn’t controversial at all and is just a part of life. Since same-sex couples have been allowed to marry throughout the United States for almost ten years now, same-sex weddings are just another thing that happens in America. “This paranoid homophobia lies at the heart of the whole case,” Slate legal writer Mark Joseph Stern wrote. “The Republican-appointed justices made it abundantly clear that they think woke educators are inculcating children with radical, pro-LGBTQ+ values in violation of their parents’ religious beliefs. These justices sound eager to give parents a veto over classroom materials to prevent their children from learning about LGBTQ+ families. And they have zero concern for the profoundly stigmatizing message this censorship sends to children who belong to those very families.” Subscribe to the LGBTQ Nation newsletter and be the first to know about the latest headlines shaping LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 32 Views 0 önizleme -

(The Michigan State Police, Seventh District via AP)2026-08-15T18:46:57Z A teenage boy and four adults were killed Friday in shootings that prompted a wide search for the fleeing gunman, whose body was ultimately found in a wooded area alongside one of his victims, authorities said. A teenage girl survived and was in stable condition, police said.Chad Hickman, 39, was found dead after a wide search in Missaukee County, police said. Police released the ages and genders of the victims on Saturday but did not specify whether they were related to each other or the suspect.Officers responded Friday morning to reports of a shooting at a home about 170 miles (270 kilometers) northwest of Detroit, where they found the bodies of a 16-year-old boy, a 45-year-old man and 40-year-old woman, and a 13-year-old girl in critical condition, Michigan State Police said.Authorities say Hickman fled that scene, leading to a large-scale search. Police found the body of a 53-year-old man at a second home, and then a 29-year-old woman, dead alongside Hickman, in the woods. All the victims died of gunshot wounds, police said. “This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved,” Lt. Ashley Miller said in a Friday statement. Miller said Saturday the investigation is ongoing.Hickman was convicted in 2024 of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse, according to court records. He was sentenced to one year in jail. In the same case, the court dismissed felony assault and criminal sexual conduct charges. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Friday she was monitoring the situation. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the Missaukee community,” she said. bağlantıAPNEWS.COMDemocrats disagree over abolishing or reforming ICE at DNC meetingDemocratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin speaks during the Black Caucus meeting as part of the DNC Summer Meeting, Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, in Austin, Texas. (AP Photo/Joel Angel Juarez)2026-08-15T18:49:15Z AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Democrats on Saturday approved dueling messages on whether U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement should be abolished or reformed, reflecting sharp opposition to President Donald Trump’s crackdown but revealing disagreement in the party ahead of the midterms. The Democratic National Committee, gathered for a summer meeting, also signed off on a raft of policy positions, including one that calls for “concrete reforms” of ICE and another for abolishing the agency that’s been at the center of several fatal encounters. ICE has been at the heart of a progressive rallying cry since 2018 during the first Trump administration, and has been renewed among some in the party after two recent fatal shootings by the agency in July. Saturday’s vote isn’t binding and doesn’t set the party’s platform, which will be determined at the 2028 convention, but it reflects the party’s differing views on a major issue. Candidates and lawmakers will continue to determine their own positions on the issue. Michele Johnson, a DNC member from Louisiana who proposed the measure to abolish ICE, said it’s time for Democrats to take a stand and pointed to the dissolution of ICE’s predecessor agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, as a precedent. “I think one of the reasons why people are not trusting the party is because we sound so academic,” she said. “We sound focus group tested, we sound poll tested because we’re worried about saying the wrong thing or doing the wrong thing and not just like, just stand on business, like take a position.” Not every DNC member was convinced, though. Yvonne Reeves-Chong voted against the measure, saying it would only gain support from a part of the party’s base, while drawing “fire” from another group of voters. Read More “I would strongly suggest we get to the business of winning races so we can make the policies that make a difference,” she said. DNC Chairman Ken Martin, who’s from Minnesota, where Renee Good and Alex Pretti were fatally shot amid the immigration crackdown earlier this year, said in an interview that the takeaway is that Democrats find the administration’s handling of immigration, including by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, unacceptable. “Clearly, the one thing that unites Democrats, regardless of their position on reform versus abolish or whatever other ways to change what’s happening, is people believe that what ICE is doing right now — and CBP and the federal government — should stop,” he said. “There has to be a better way.”Immigration remained a stronger issue for Trump than the economy or Iran, according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released this month, even after three people were killed in encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the span of under a week in July.Overall, the survey found that only 39% of U.S. adults approve of his performance on immigration, down from 49% at the beginning of his second term. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDevdutt Padikkal's 131 headlines India's dominant Day 1 at 288/2 in Galle on Independence DayDevdutt Padikkal stole the spotlight on a memorable opening day as India finished 288/2 against Sri Lanka in the first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on Saturday. On a rain-interrupted day that marked India's 600th Test match, Padikkal produced a sublime unbeaten 131 to put India firmly in control. Rishabh Pant was unbeaten on 27 at stumps, while Sri Lanka's bowlers struggled to make an impact on a pitch offering some assistance to spin.Jaiswal's aggressive start ends in run-outIndia captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal provided an aggressive start before his innings was cut short by a costly mix-up with KL Rahul. Jaiswal, who had raced to 32, was run out as India lost their first wicket for 47.Padikkal then joined Rahul at the crease after coming into the playing XI at No. 3 following Sai Sudharsan's injury setback. The pair steadied India's innings and guided the visitors to 101/1 before rain forced an early lunch break. After the resumption, Padikkal and Rahul took control of the contest. The Karnataka duo negotiated Sri Lanka's spin attack with confidence, rotating the strike and finding the boundaries whenever opportunities presented themselves. Both batters brought up their half-centuries as their partnership grew rapidly.By the tea interval, India had reached 197/1, with Padikkal and Rahul having added 150 runs for the second wicket. However, Rahul's excellent innings came to an unfortunate end when he was forced to retire hurt on 77 after suffering severe cramps and discomfort in his right hand. Rahul's knock came from 162 balls and included nine fours and a six.Padikkal completes maiden Test centuryWith Rahul off the field, Gill joined Padikkal in the middle. The left-hander continued to dictate terms and accelerated against the Sri Lankan attack. Padikkal brought up his maiden Test century off 134 balls, celebrating a landmark moment in his young Test career. His century was particularly significant as he became the first Indian batter to score a Test hundred on Independence Day and only the second Indian to score an international century on August 15 after Virat Kohli. Padikkal also became only the second Indian left-hander in the 21st century to score a Test century from No. 3, after Sourav Ganguly.Gill falls, Pant joins PadikkalGill's stay at the crease was brief as he was dismissed for 16, with Prabath Jayasuriya providing Sri Lanka with their only bowler-credited wicket of the day. Rishabh Pant then joined Padikkal and immediately injected momentum into the innings, finishing unbeaten on 27 off 36 balls, with three fours and a six.Padikkal remained unbeaten on 131 off 178 balls, having struck 12 fours and a six. The pair added an unbeaten 52-run partnership as India reached 288/2 in 73 overs at stumps.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 64 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCarragher: Midfield “Huge Problem” For LiverpoolCarragher: Midfield “Huge Problem” For LiverpoolCarragher Warns Liverpool Midfield Could Become a Huge ProblemJamie Carragher has rarely been shy when it comes to identifying Liverpool’s weaknesses, and his latest concern feels increasingly difficult to dismiss. For all the movement elsewhere in the squad this summer, Liverpool’s midfield remains largely untouched. Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo have strengthened the defence, Victor Munoz has arrived to bolster the attacking options, while Kostas Tsimikas and Harvey Elliott have returned from loan.Yet the most structurally important area of Andoni Iraola’s side may still be missing a specialist.Carragher believes Liverpool need a recognised No. 6, and he has described the current midfield situation as a “huge problem”.Carragher Questions Liverpool Midfield BalanceLiverpool were linked with Adam Wharton earlier in the year, while Elliot Anderson was also discussed before his move to Manchester City. Even so, adding a defensive midfielder has not appeared to be among the club’s immediate priorities.Carragher thinks that approach carries considerable risk.“The midfield issue for me is still a huge problem for Liverpool,” he said on The Overlap.Ryan Gravenberch performed the No. 6 role during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, yet last season exposed some of the difficulties involved in asking him to control large areas of midfield under a different tactical structure.Carragher believes those spaces could remain an issue if Gravenberch partners Dominik Szoboszlai in a deeper midfield pairing.“The problem Liverpool had last season was there was space everywhere in Liverpool’s midfield,” Carragher started. “That has not gone away at all.“That’s only going to get bigger with the deployment of Szoboszlai in midfield – it looks like they’re going to play him (there), rather than as a No. 10, almost as a central midfield player alongside Gravenberch, and that is just pure box-to-box.“I look at that midfield three and I worry about Liverpool.”Quality Alone May Not Solve Liverpool ProblemThere is an interesting contradiction within Liverpool’s midfield options. Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz all possess considerable individual quality, yet their collective instincts may leave the side vulnerable.Carragher explained:“When you name six or seven of Liverpool’s players, you can’t say they’re not top players.“You can’t say Gravenberch is not a really good player, or Wirtz, or Szoboszlai.“But as a midfield three, I look at that and think, oh no – there’s almost too much quality, but they all want to go and play and run.“And even in pre-season, the space is coming through the middle.”That may be the central issue. Midfields are rarely assembled simply by putting three gifted footballers next to each other. Roles matter, positioning matters, discipline matters.Liverpool currently have plenty of players capable of carrying the ball, pressing forward and influencing attacks. Carragher’s concern is whether anybody is truly equipped to remain behind the play and protect the spaces others vacate.Mac Allister Role Comes Under ScrutinyAlexis Mac Allister complicates the picture further.Carragher questioned exactly how the Argentine fits into Iraola’s midfield structure, particularly if Liverpool intend to rely heavily on Gravenberch and Szoboszlai.“What’s the point of Mac Allister if he’s not your passer? Because he’s not running everywhere – he’s supposed to sit in midfield and dictate the play,” Carragher continued.“But number two, Gravenberch isn’t what you’d call a complete midfielder…he’s not a Caicedo – he’s probably got a slightly different game. He’s not just an out-and-out No. 6.“We need to buy that type of player, not just to play every week, but what if Gravenberch gets injured?“You’re telling me that Liverpool’s central midfield will only be Mac Allister and Szoboszlai!?”Midfield Signing Could Define Liverpool SeasonLiverpool’s remaining transfer priorities appear focused heavily on attacking reinforcements, particularly in wide areas.Carragher’s argument is that a No. 6 could prove equally important.Liverpool have enough creativity, running power and technical ability across midfield. What they may lack is someone whose primary responsibility is control. That difference can seem subtle in August. Over the course of a Premier League season, it can become decisive. For Iraola, the challenge is ensuring Liverpool’s midfield has enough structure to match its talent. Carragher clearly believes that balance has not yet been found.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 47 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMKeeper, 55, saves three penalties in shoot-out as Newtonmore reach final[BBC]Newtonmore's 55-year-old goalkeeper Kenny Ross saved three time in a penalty shoot-out as the holders came from 2-0 down at Oban Camananchd to reach the Camanachd Cup final. The holders trailed to Connor Howe's first-half double at Taynuilt and looked spent. But Steven MacDonald pulled one back from the spot and Matthew Sloss equalised with three minutes left. Camanachd went down to 11 men late in the second half when Garry McKerracher was dismissed, but Newtonmore lost Declan Brannan to a second yellow early in extra time to level things. And with no further scoring, Ross made three spectacular saves in the shoot-out before Brodie MacBean converted to set up a final with local rivals Kingussie on 19 September in Oban. Those two lead the way in the Premiership, too, with Kingussie cutting Newtonmore's advantage at the top to four points after coming from behind for a 4-1 victory at Fort William.Victor Smith gave Fort the breakthrough midway through the first half, but four goals in 17 minutes early in the second half by Calum McLay, Rory Munro, Jack Nelson and Ruaridh Anderson gave Kingussie the points.Kinlochshiel moved up to third with a 2-0 defeat of Caberfeidh at Rearaig, John MacRae and Ali Nixon scoring in the second half.Play in the relegation zone went Skye's way when the island side defeated Kyles 3-1 at Tighnabruich, while Col Glen went down 2-1 to Lochaber at Spean Bridge.Dan MacDonald opened for Skye and Logan Sim equalised before Skye stretched away with a second from MacDonald and one from Jamie Gillies.Kyle Martin got the breakthrough for Col Glen and Ben Delaney equalised for Lochaber, whose winner from Stuart Callison came deep into stoppage time. This sees Skye edging towards safety with five points from nine games, with the relegation zone occupied by Col Glen on three points from 12 and Kyles with two from 11.In the National Division, Lovat defeated visitors Glasagow Mid Argyll 4-1 but are still unable to confirm promotion alongside Glenurquhart.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 81 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSports Mania gears up for Jags fans as the start of football season arrivesThe countdown to football season has started as the Jacksonville Jaguars take the field Saturday for their first preseason matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Local fans are already getting geared up for the new season. At Sports Mania on Beach Boulevard, the sales floor is currently a sea of teal, black, and gold. The high energy follows a historic previous season where the Jaguars clinched the AFC South title and made a deep playoff run. “Anything Jags-related last year blew out the doors, blew out of the tent, blew out to the parking lot, blew out everywhere we had a chance to sell it,” said Trevor Ellsworth, store manager at Sports Mania. “This year we almost had to do a full reset, because with the playoff run last year, the cupboards were bare,” Ellsworth said. For fans navigating the packed racks of jerseys, hats, and accessories, the sheer volume of choices is something fans like to see. “It’s hard to make a decision what to get,” said Jags fan Jack Flickinger, who stopped by the store ahead of today’s game. “I was just down in the area, figured I’d get some new Jags swag for the car for the season.” While fans are riding a wave of optimism, the high stakes of maintaining last year’s winning drive also bring plenty of pressure. “If this season starts like last season ended, this beard’s gonna be completely white by the end of the first quarter,” Ellsworth joked. Despite a schedule featuring fewer true home games and reduced stadium capacity this year, Sports Mania managers say they are fully prepared to keep the fan base equipped. Management confirmed that even more merchandise is scheduled to hit the shelves soon, with additional shipments of gear already on the way to sustain Duval pride all season long. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 22 Views 0 önizleme -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMA late Liberty surge, sparked by Marine Johannes, sinks the Sun as Sabrina Ionescu sitsUNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Jonquel Jones scored 23 points and Marine Johannes keyed a fourth-quarter run to help the New York Liberty beat the Connecticut Sun 82-75 on Saturday.New York (22-14) played without Sabrina Ionescu, who tweaked her left ankle in a 85-81 win over Los Angeles on Thursday. Liberty Coach Chris DeMarco said before Saturday's game that Ionescu was day to day and they were being precautionary with her.The Liberty, who have won nine of their past 11 games, got off to a slow start without Ionescu. The Sun led 27-19 after one quarter. This came after the Liberty gave up 40 points to the Sparks in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game. Jones then got going, scoring 19 points in the first half as New York rallied to take a 46-37 lead at the break.Connecticut (8-25) hung around and trailed 63-62 early in the fourth quarter. With New York reeling and the shot clock set to expire, Johannes hit a one-legged off-balance 3-pointer to make it 66-62.That started a 10-2 run by New York to seal the win. Johannes, who finished with 17 points, hit another 3 to close the burst. This was Jones' last time playing in Connecticut; the Sun are moving to Houston next year. Jones spent six years with the Sun before coming to New York in 2023. The Sun retired her No. 35 jersey in June during the Liberty's previous trip to Connecticut. The 2021 WNBA MVP was a late scratch for that game because she wasn't feeling well.Breanna Stewart struggled early on, missing her first seven shots before scoring with 2:32 left in the second quarter. She finished with 11 points.Connecticut also was shorthanded. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReports: Juventus contact Emi Martinez again after Aston Villa make move for Zion SuzukiEAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY - JULY 19: Emiliano Martinez of Argentina reacts during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final match between Spain and Argentina at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19, 2026 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Image Photo Agency/Getty Images) | Getty Images The goalkeeper situation at Juventus has no end in sight, and Saturday brought another twist in the saga that seems to see something completely unexpected happen every couple of days lately. You thought Zion Suzuki was going to Paris Saint-Germain? Ha, think again! All of this has kicked off another potential instance of the goalkeeper Domino effect coming into action. Aston Villa, a club linked with Suzuki earlier this summer, are now reportedly trying to accelerate a deal after things fell apart with PSG due to potential commission costs for agents. And because of that, according to multiple reports out of Italy, Juventus saw an opportunity to check in with their first initial backup plan this summer, current Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez, to see if things can be rekindled after much of June and July involving reports of the Bianconeri trying to bring the World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022 to Turin.Per Fabrizio Romano, talks between Juve and Villa are “not at advanced stages after today’s call.” He adds that “physical issues” that Martinez suffered during the World Cup earlier this summer — i.e. playing with a broken finger that he suffered before the Europa League final — are very much a potential sticking point and Juve are also considering other options in goal.Consider all of this something that I didn’t expect to be writing about this weekend. The Suzuki move to Paris Saint-Germain looked like it was just one official announcement away from happening. Then … poof! Suzuki’s move to PSG was a thing of the past, commissions were not deemed suitable all the sudden and the private jet that that two-time defending European champions to pick up the Japanese goalkeeper was canceled.Interesting little Saturday.Aston Villa had been linked to Suzuki earlier this summer, and a potential move to Villa Park was viewed as a potential thing to unlock Martinez’s departure and potential move to Juventus. Then we waited … and waited … and waited … only for Suzuki to then become an option for Juve as the Martinez move stalled. The general consensus in reporting following all of this happening on Saturday: Juventus moving for Martinez still looks like an extremely tough thing to make happen — especially now with the 2026-27 season about to begin. Aston Villa have reportedly submitted the same type of financial package that PSG did for Suzuki, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Martinez is on his way to Juve because of it. Why? Because of money, honey — the same thing that has always made this deal something that hadn’t already taken place this summer.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 93 Views 0 önizleme -

Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Los Angeles Lakers are going to be totally different this year. The obvious difference is that LeBron James is gone. But, it's not just about James. When a player of his status leaves a franchise after nearly a decade, it shifts the whole dynamic of that team and its remaining stars. Now, Luka Doncic is really the face of this franchise. He's a superstar and can handle the pressure, but one NBA analyst thinks he's going to really have to step it up in the new season. He's not wrong, either. The Lakers are in a bit of a tumult after losing James, and this next season is pivotal.Luka Doncic needs to 'show up in shape' for 2026 season, NBA analyst saysIn a piece for Bleacher Report out on Saturday, Grant Hughes names one player with the most to prove on every NBA team going into the new season. For the Lakers, it's Doncic. Hughes notes that while Doncic will "absolutely going to get his numbers" and is a "great bet to average more points and free-throw attempts per game than anyone else in the league," there are some questions."But can he show up in shape? Can he avoid the injuries that have broken him down over the course of almost every season in his career?" he asks. "Can he deliver in the postseason against a Western Conference headlined by the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs?"He also wonders if Doncic can finally win MVP, which he's been a favorite for but hasn't been able to do in eight seasons. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona bought a winger and sold a striker: The complicated legacy of Ferran TorresBarcelona bought a winger and sold a striker: The complicated legacy of Ferran TorresThere was something irrational about Barcelona signing Ferran Torres from Manchester City in December 2021.The club were drowning in debt. President Joan Laporta had revealed only months earlier that Barça owed €1.35 billion.Lionel Messi had departed because the club could not make the numbers on a new contract work, and La Liga had imposed a spending limit on the Blaugrana that season.Barcelona could buy Ferran, but even registering him for the La Liga campaign required further financial manoeuvring.Yet the Catalans found €55 million, with another €10 million potentially payable in variables, and spent it on a 21-year-old forward from Manchester City.It was more than a transfer. It was one of the first significant acts of faith of the new era, and it came on an unproven Spaniard with potential.Dani Alves had technically become Xavi Hernandez’s first signing a few weeks earlier, but Ferran was the first major investment in the new coach’s project.Four and a half years later, Ferran leaves for PSG for a reported €50 million, signing until 2031.He does so having just completed the best goalscoring season of his Barcelona career and, weeks earlier, scored the extra-time winner that made Spain world champions. It is an extraordinary place for the story to end because Barça spent much of these four and a half years trying to figure out what they had bought. It looked straightforwardA €55 million signing from Man City. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images)At the beginning, the answer seemed quite obvious. Ferran was young, versatile, Spanish and already accustomed to positional football under Pep Guardiola. He could operate from either flank, attack space without the ball and appear inside the penalty area with the instincts of someone more comfortable around goal than the average winger. His first six months offered enough encouragement. He scored seven times in 26 appearances after arriving midway through the 2021-22 season. There were imperfect finishes and frustrating nights, but there was plenty of movement and attacking impetus to like.Ferran understood where space was going to appear before it actually did. He attacked the back post. He ran beyond defenders. He drifted from wide positions towards the penalty area rather than waiting for the game to arrive at his feet.Looking back now, Barcelona were already seeing the qualities that would go on to define him as a footballer. They simply misinterpreted them for a significant while. For years, Ferran was spoken about through his versatility. He could play on the left. He could play on the right. He could fill in through the middle. It started off as a compliment but eventually became his problem.Versatility slowly gave way to uncertaintyThe 2022-23 season was when the cracks began to appear. Barça had signed the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha and had Ousmane Dembele in the best form of his career at the club. They were no longer as dependent on Ferran as they had been in his first half-season. The forward scored seven goals in 45 games, exactly the same number he had managed in 26 matches during his first half-season.The 2022/23 season was a frustrating one for Ferran personally. (Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images)There were players better suited to receiving wide and beating opponents. There was one of the greatest centre-forwards of his generation occupying the penalty area. So, where exactly was Ferran meant to adapt? This was a question that would follow him throughout the Xavi era.He was a winger who often looked most dangerous when leaving the wing. A forward capable of playing centrally without being treated as the team’s centre-forward.He slowly got labelled a “useful player”, but not in the right connotation. At least, the €55 million price tag did not allow him to be viewed as that. The fee became part of every poor performance. Every missed chance carried extra weight. Every indifferent display reopened the same conversation. To his credit, Ferran improved in the 2023-24 season. There were flashes of something more substantial, including a hat-trick against Real Betis, but the identity crisis remained.Barcelona knew the 26-year-old could do several things. It took Hansi Flick to decide what he did not need to do.Flick’s greatest invention with Ferran was to keep things simpleFlick did not invent Ferran Torres, the striker. Pep Guardiola had used him centrally at Manchester City, while Barcelona had occasionally done the same before the German arrived. What changed was the role clarity and definition that Flick gave Ferran. In many ways, he simplified him.He was used less and less on the touchline. His position was not left ambiguous like in previous years. He was given a very clear mandate: you will play as a striker.Under Flick, the attributes that sometimes seemed awkward on the wing suddenly became coherent.Flick unlocks Ferran. (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images)The constant movement mattered more than isolation dribbling. His willingness to sprint behind centre-backs became an attacking weapon. His instinct to arrive in scoring positions was no longer something dragging him away from his role and became the very thing Flick fed into. The transformation showed immediately in the numbers. Ferran reached 19 goals and seven assists in 2024-25, his best season at the club to that point. He also finished as the Copa del Rey’s top scorer with six goals, scoring the late equaliser against Real Madrid in the final before Barça won in extra time. This was not the prettiest version of Ferran. However, it was easily the most coherent one. From Lewandowski’s alternative to a Barcelona No. 9The second season under Flick confirmed that his striker evolution was more than just a prolonged purple patch.Ferran scored 21 goals and supplied three assists in 49 appearances across all competitions in 2025-26.In La Liga, his 16 goals earned him the Zarra Trophy alongside Lamine Yamal as the division’s highest-scoring Spanish player.By April, he had reached the milestone of 200 Barça appearances. More importantly, the discussion around him had changed.Previously, Ferran starting games ahead of Lewandowski meant rotation. Now, it had emerged as a legitimate tactical choice.Lewandowski remained Lewandowski: pedigree, penalty-box presence and an almost absurd body of goals behind him.Ferran produced his career-best numbers last season. (Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images)Ferran offered something different. More running. More pressure. More movement across and behind a defensive line. There were games where Flick realised that he needed that kind of striker more than he did someone like the veteran Pole, whose legs kept getting wearier with every passing day. There were still droughts because the Spaniard’s Barcelona career was never going to become completely linear. There were still moments when the finishing deserted him and the old frustrations resurfaced. However, that is part of who Ferran is.Barça’s success was not transforming the 26-year-old into something flawless. It was about transforming him into something identifiable.Just as everything made sense, Paris swooped inThat is what makes the timing of this farewell very strange. Most expensive signings leave when the club accepts that they miscalculated with the player and sell him on to cut their losses.Barça are doing the exact opposite with Ferran. They are parting ways with him at a time when his stock is at the highest it has ever been in his career. There is something very modern-Barça about the contradiction. For perhaps the first time since Ferran arrived, the sporting case for keeping him is crystal clear. That is also the reason why the financial case for selling him has become so compelling. That, along with the fact that he wanted PSG.Barcelona bought potential and transformed it into a near-finished product, only for PSG to swoop in. It has a sense of deja vu.It is not too dissimilar to what happened with Ousmane Dembele a few seasons ago and how his career has transformed since moving to Paris. This is not to suggest that Ferran will go on to become a Ballon d’Or winner in France, but there is a feeling that he still has one more level to his game that Barça will not get to enjoy.Ferran says goodbye. (Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images)So, was Ferran Torres a successful Barcelona signing?Eventually, it all comes down to this one question.Calling him an unequivocal success feels generous considering the size of the original investment and the long stretches when he seemed peripheral to Barcelona’s best attack.Terming him a failure is even harder to defend. He leaves with seven major trophies: three La Liga titles, three Spanish Super Cups and a Copa del Rey.On a personal note, he leaves with 207 appearances and 65 goals. Those are not the numbers of a failed story. For much of his Barcelona career, Ferran survived. He survived tough spells under Xavi. He survived uncomfortable games on the wing.He was rarely central to the story. However, he was always part of it.Spain may remember Ferran Torres through one clean image: the ball reaching him in extra time of a World Cup final, the finish and the eruption that followed.Barcelona’s memory of him may always remain a bit more clouded than that.Back in 2022, Ferran said: “Haaland and Mbappe? I think that I can compete with them, I know how far I can go.”The 26-year-old can still go on to live up to that prophecy. It just will not be in a Barcelona jersey. He will not leave as one of Barcelona’s great forwards. He will leave as something more complicated: not a legend, not a failure, but an unmistakable Blaugrana story.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 92 Views 0 önizleme -

(AP Photo/Lindsey Wasson)2026-08-15T19:29:58Z SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks and cornerback Devon Witherspoon have agreed to a four-year, $132 million contract extension, with $101 million guaranteed, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the contract, which would make Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, hasn’t been finalized. On March 26, the Seahawks exercised their fifth-year option on Witherspoon, but elected to sign him to a long-term deal on the same day they started preseason play against the Dallas Cowboys. Witherspoon, 25, was selected No. 5 overall by the Seahawks in the 2023 draft. In the same round of that draft, the Seahawks selected wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who in March agreed to a four-year, $168.8 million contract with $120 million guaranteed. In three seasons with Seattle, Witherspoon has been selected to the Pro Bowl each season. He also made the second-team All-Pro team and helped the Seahawks win the Super Bowl last season. Witherspoon appeared in all three of Seattle’s playoff games during its Super Bowl run, making 17 tackles and four passes defended. In 43 regular-season games, Witherspoon has 249 tackles, 32 passes defended, 16 tackles for loss, 4 1/2 sacks and two interceptions. ___See AP’s full NFL coverage here 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 82 Views 0 önizleme

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPatriots urged to make realistic but unfortunate roster move with fan favorite WRPatriots urged to make realistic but unfortunate roster move with fan favorite WR originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New England Patriots are heading towards the 2026 regular season with a renewed sense of confidence in the offense despite reaching a high ceiling last year.Part of the reason why there is such confidence in this year's team is the offseason wide receiver pickups of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs. Both are incredible additions, and with the already in-house WRs, this is suddenly a very strong WR room. However, this does mean some bad news for one fan-favorite WR. As Bleacher Report's Moe Moton is urging the Patriots to do, cutting ties with Efton Chism III. It'd sting to see him go, but unfortunately, there's not really much of a reason to keep him around.Patriots urged to cut Efton Chism III in move that's unfortunate reality for fan favorite WR"Even if the New England Patriots trade Kayshon Boutte ahead of final roster cuts, Efton Chism III will probably be on the outside looking in at five wide receivers ahead of him on the depth chart," Moton writes.Brown and Doubs are the clear No. 1 and No. 2 options in this offense, but even behind them the Patriots will have some solid receivers to turn to.Mack Hollins is a bit of an odd veteran WR, but he does the dirty work well and has his fair share of moments that warrant keeping him on the roster.DeMario Douglas and Kayson Boutte have flashed potential during their Patriots careers, and either could be traded if the opportunity came around. But both would ideally be on the roster for the 2026 season.MORE: ESPN analyst predicts Josh Allen is already a Hall of Famer despite lack of Bills playoff successKyle Williams, the second-year draft pick who showed promise last season, is not likely to lose his roster spot to Chism this summer even though he's been a little underwhelming. With all of those WRs in mind, Chism is, at best, the team's No. 7 WR. No team is keeping seven receivers, especially since there's a chance Chism could make it back to the practice squad after roster cutdowns anyway.Chism just doesn't really have a path to the roster unless a WR is traded, and he really stands out during preseason and camp, and the Patriots need to keep six or more WRs on the roster through cutdowns.Releasing Chism makes a lot of sense for the Patriots, and Moton's urging of the Patriots to do so is the unfortunate reality facing the fan favorite WR.More NFL news:Ben Johnson responds to Liam Coen’s pointed Caleb Williams commentLamar Jackson is already predicted to be a Hall of Fame QB for Ravens per ESPNEagles' Jalen Hurts 'shouldn't have trouble' reaching Hall of Fame if he can continue to have playoff successCowboys QB Dak Prescott projected by ESPN to be behind Lions QB Jared Goff for HOF chancePackers edge Micah Parsons already predicted to be on cusp of Hall of Fame0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 79 Views 0 önizleme -

In 2025, she defeated Peyton Stearns in three sets in the same round of the Cincinnati Open on her way to a quarterfinals appearance, where she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Though a disappointing result in her hometown tournament, McNally added onto a bounce-back year that included a career-high singles ranking (No. 50) earlier this summer. McNally has won at least one main draw match over the last five WTA1000 tournaments and is 16-10 overall in her last 10 events. Her Cincinnati Open is not over, though. McNally will team up with Iva Jovic in doubles. That tandem will face China's Xu Yifan-Tang Qianhui in the first round of the doubles draw later in the tournament. Fellow Cincinnati native Peyton Stearns will play in the Round of 64 to begin the Aug. 15 night session against No. 27 seed Clara Tauson.
