Patriots Sign Two Offensive Linemen In Four-Player Roster Shakeup
Patriots Sign Two Offensive Linemen In Four-Player Roster Shakeup originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The New England Patriots made four roster moves Saturday as Mike Vrabel’s team continued adjusting its depth following its preseason opener. New England signed offensive linemen Darrian Dalcourt and Joe Michalski, adding two versatile interior options to the training camp roster. The Patriots also released long snapper Niko Lalos and placed guard Andrew Rupcich on injured reserve. The moves come two days after New England opened its preseason schedule against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium. With roster decisions approaching, the Patriots are using the remaining weeks of camp to evaluate potential depth pieces throughout the offensive line.Patriots Add Two Interior LinemenDalcourt entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2024. The 25-year-old spent his rookie season on Baltimore’s practice squad before being released at the end of training camp in 2025. The 6-foot-3, 309-pound lineman later spent time on the practice squads of the Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns.Patriots make a series of roster moves: https://t.co/HM0X6x20YIpic.twitter.com/82dhrNzJx3— New England Patriots (@Patriots) August 15, 2026Dalcourt played his college football at Alabama, where he appeared at center and guard. His familiarity with multiple interior positions could help him receive an extended look from New England during the remainder of the preseason.Michalski offers similar positional flexibility. The 25-year-old signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted rookie in 2025 and spent the season on their practice squad. The 6-foot-4, 303-pound lineman played in 59 college games between Oklahoma State and his earlier stops, making 35 starts at center and guard. Neither addition comes with extensive NFL game experience, but both give the Patriots more practice depth at a position that has dealt with uncertainty throughout the summer.MORE: Mike Vrabel Sends Clear Message To Patriots’ Young PlayersAndrew Rupcich Heads To Injured ReserveRupcich’s move to injured reserve created one of the openings for New England’s new additions. The Patriots did not announce the nature or severity of the guard’s injury in their official release.Lalos’ departure came only five days after the Patriots brought him back. The 28-year-old initially signed with New England on March 16 before being released May 20. He returned Aug. 10, this time listed as a long snapper, but his latest stint ended Saturday. Lalos originally entered the league as an undrafted defensive end with the New York Giants in 2020. He appeared in six games that season, recording five tackles and one fumble recovery. He later spent time with the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL.The Patriots now will see whether Dalcourt or Michalski can capitalize on the late-camp opportunity. Both players face a difficult path to the initial 53-man roster, but their experience at center and guard could make them candidates for New England’s practice squad.More PatriotsLatest Patriots newsTom Brady's Patriots legacy: How legendary QB set new standardComplete history of Patriots championships

Michael Phelps returns poolside with his sons as 8-year-old Beckett eyes swimming
Michael Phelps attends the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, Calif., Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)2026-08-15T22:55:59Z IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Ten years to the week after ending his career at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics with 23 career gold medals, Michael Phelps turned up at the Pan Pacific Championships with two of his four young sons. And one is interested in swimming.Beckett, who’s 8, and brother Maverick, who’s 6, sat with their dad and mom Nicole watching two days of the international meet featuring the U.S., Australia, Canada and Japan. Oldest brother Boomer, age 10, was keeping youngest brother Nico, age 2, entertained at home.Beckett took a keen interest in the racing. The U.S. team is being overseen by Phelps’ longtime coach, Bob Bowman, who is an unofficial grandfather to the boys.“Grandpa Bob is giving him some pointers here and there,” Phelps said. “I would say he’s got more of a sprinter-type stroke, so not me, which kind of makes me happy.” The family is researching coaches in Phoenix, where they live, for Beckett.“If he wants to be a swimmer, I will support it,” Phelps said. “I will never push him into it. I want him to become his own person. I just hope he has fun.”Phelps was careful to explain some of the finer points to Beckett.“I was like, ‘Dude, if you want to train hard and literally grind, this is the sport,’” he said. Phelps began swimming when he was 7 in his hometown of Baltimore, where he was initially afraid to put his face in the water. He joined a local club partly to follow his older sisters who swam and also to channel his high energy levels that occasionally bedeviled his single mother, Debbie. He made his Olympic debut at 15 in the 2000 Sydney Games. Now he sees some of himself in his second son’s traits.“He has a hard time turning the switch off, so when he gets angry, he gets angry,” Phelps said. “That was the same way I was, so stare at that black line and scream as loud as you possibly can.”___AP sports: https://apnews.com/hub/sports

Bears WRs coach Antwaan Randle El called plays in the second half Saturday
The Bears scored 24 points and put up 235 yards in the second half of their 34-10 preseason win over the Browns on Saturday. Head coach Ben Johnson revealed after the game that wide receivers coach/assistant head coach Antwaan Randle El called the plays in the second half.“Has anybody ever had a better first outing than Antwaan Randle El?” quarterback Tyson Bagent said, via Dan Wiederer of TheAthletic.com. “That’s just who he is. He’s always prepared. He knows the ins and outs of the playbook. So really, it was not surprising — at least for us on the sideline.”Randle El, who turns 47 next week, impressed Johnson and the quarterbacks with the way he handled the call sheet.“He did a phenomenal job,” Johnson said. “He was part of the quarterbacks’ meeting [Friday] night, and we were talking about what was on the call sheet and their favorites and all that. I think it was a phenomenal experience for him. I know our guys really rallied around that.”Declan Doyle was the Bears' offensive coordinator last year, but Johnson called the plays. Thus, Johnson allowed Doyle to leave for Baltimore to become the Ravens' offensive coordinator and play-caller this season. The Bears believe Randle El is a rising star in the NFL coaching ranks and destined to run things in the not-too-distant future.“I know he’s going to be a head coach,” veteran quarterback Case Keenum said. “I think his demeanor in front of the team, his leadership qualities, are top-notch. Some of the best I’ve been around. His relatability to players? I mean, it’s the fact that he’s been there, done that with just about everything. And there’s no, for lack of a better word, ‘coachspeak’ to him. It’s all real.”Randle El, a former NFL star receiver, followed Johnson from Detroit to Chicago when Johnson was hired by the Bears in 2025.

3 questions for Jaguars after preseason win v. Saints
The Jacksonville Jaguars secured the come-from-behind win in their preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints. However, despite the outcome, there are some noteworthy questions surrounding the Jaguars coming out of this game as well. Let's take a look at three of the big ones. Can the Jaguars overcome injuries to the offensive line? The offensive line unit has been decimated by injuries as of late. Cole Van Lanen remains on the PUP list, while Patrick Mekari and Walker Little are still sidelined. Then, on the first play of Jacksonville's opening possession against the Saints, Chuma Edoga left the game. The starting lineup has had to be reshaped, and the Jaguars' depth up front is thin. The Saints' defensive front took advantage, totaling four sacks, six tackles for loss, and seven quarterback hits. The Jaguars' run game did get going, but overall, those were still hard-fought yards, with Jacksonville averaging just 3.3 yards per attempt. It remains to be seen how this unit will perform moving forward. Is the Jaguars' pass rush going to be fine? The answer right now is yes. The depth behind Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker was in question this offseason, while more steady pass rush production from the interior was a must this season.Danny Striggow had three tackles, half a sack, and a quarterback hit. BJ Green had a fumble recovery, with help from Wesley Williams on that play. Williams also showcased that well-rounded skill set that the coaches have talked about. UDFA Bryan Thomas Jr. flashed as well.Inside, Ruke Ohorhoro was quite disruptive, while Albert Regis generated a sack from the nose tackle position.Which Jaguars gave their roster chances a boost in New Orleans? There are two that stand out -- J'Mari Taylor and Yasir Abdullah.Taylor was the catalyst behind a few scoring drives in the second half. He also showed the ability to consistently turn very little into positive gains -- a very valuable trait for any running back to have. The challenge is that three roster spots are already accounted for, but can Taylor force the Jaguars to keep a fourth back as they often did in 2025?Abdullah totaled two tackles, one of which was for a loss, and a sack. He also contributed to a forced fumble and has been a regular special teams contributor. Abdullah is very much in the mix for a roster spot, likely competing with Jalen McLeod and Parker Hughes. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: 3 questions for Jaguars after preseason win v. Iowa State football names team captains for 2026 season
Iowa State football coach Jimmy Rogers has announced the captains for the 2026 football season. On Aug. 15, the Cyclones revealed its six co-captains to lead a roster that features 82 newcomers in the first year of the Rogers era: quarterback Jaylen Raynor, running back Aiden Flora, offensive lineman Jake Taylor, defensive tackle Max Baloun, defensive end Isaac Terrell and cornerback David Coffey.Raynor is entering his senior season after three years as a starter at Arkansas State. The dual-threat quarterback immediately took a leadership role upon arrival, before captains were officially named. He has a 62.9% career completion rate for 8,694 yards, 52 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. He also has 1,183 career rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 414 carries.Flora continues his ascent on the roster. A former walk-on that broke through on special teams as an All-Big 12 second-team returner last season, Flora is primed for a larger role and will be one of the top running backs on offense this year.Taylor was one of the Cyclones' top acquisitions through the transfer portal and a leader on the offensive line. The Oklahoma transfer has appeared in 16 games for the Sooners, including four starts in 2024, but injuries have hindered his career. Now healthy, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound tackle is getting a fresh start at Iowa State after spending four years with the Sooners. As for the captains from the defensive side of the ball, Coffey is another holdover that has become a cornerstone player for the new-look Cyclones entering the 2026 season. Coffey played in nine games last season and made 11 tackles, as injuries took a toll on Iowa State's defense. This year, he's going to be an integral member of the Cyclones' secondary as a redshirt sophomore.Baloun is a 6-foot-6, 293-pound defensive tackle that also served as team captain for Rogers at Washington State last season. The experienced lineman is entering his seventh year of college football. He previously played at Washington State and spent five years at South Dakota State, where he first got acquainted with Rogers. Baloun is back in action after a season-ending ACL injury derailed his 2025 campaign after four games. As for Terrell, he is coming off of a career year at Washington State. He played in 12 games and made six starts last season, finishing with 28 tackles with team-highs of 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks. He was named the Pac-12 Conference Top Defensive Line Performer and is expected to be a key catalyst in the Cyclones' new four-man front. The Cyclones open the 2026 season against Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Jack Trice Stadium.Eugene Rapay covers Iowa State athletics for the Des Moines Register. Red team wins Arizona volleyball Red-Blue scrimmage
The Red team during Arizona volleyball Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage | Photo courtesy of Arizona Athletics Saturday’s Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage showed some of the promise of the 2026 Arizona Wildcats and answered some of the questions, but there were still some left open when the Red team emerged victorious in four sets (20-25, 27-25, 25-18, 15-10).Red was superior in kills (56-35), hitting percentage (.181 to .109), and blocking (10.0 to 5.0). Both teams had four aces, but they struggled overall on serve. The initial team lineups were made to be as competitive as possible. Neither team was dominated by presumed starters or returners from last year’s team. After the second set, the roster was shaken up where more of the returners and presumed starters were stacked on the Blue team, but that didn’t slow down the Red squad. The Blue team started with Carlie Cisneros and Payton Woods at outside hitter, Britt Carlson at opposite, Journey Tucker and Maya Flemister at middle blocker, Harmony Sample setting, and Brenna Ginder at libero. Red featured Destiny Ndam-Simpson and Hayden Reeder on the left side, Kennedy Osunsanmi on the right, Mo Siapani at setter, Kristen Dear and Marina Vosloo at middle, and Brookelyn Hatton at libero.Eventually, Ginder, Ndam-Simpson, Osunsanmi, Flemister, Carlson, and Woods would flip sides. Hatton took off the libero jersey in favor of freshman Gigi Whann for a while, as well.A big concern for Arizona has been who would score after the graduation of Jordan Wilson. Ndam-Simpson showed that she’s ready to step into that role.“She can do all do it all as an attacker,” said Arizona head coach Rita Stubbs. The transfer from Creighton had 24 kills on .177 hitting. She was both more efficient and effective in the first two sets when on the Red team. She had 17 kills on .263 hitting before switching sides.“I have a lot of things that I’ve been working on that I’ve been growing in attacking and passing, especially passing,” Ndam-Simpson said. “Building consistency there has been huge for me, and continuing to just have confidence and belief in myself that I can do it.”Woods had some success on the attack, but she also showed where she needs to improve her game. She had 4 kills, but they were offset by 5 errors. The strongest part of her game turned out to be her block, where she was good for 3 total blocks. Two of them were solo.“It’s something to make the right sides think,” Woods said of her blocking. “Normally, right sides is like one of your big attackers. They’re normally really tall. So for me, just focusing on getting up and over the net, pressing, taking their best swing, and it definitely helps the defense. Especially when I’m in middle back and I have a good block set up.”The Wildcats got scoring on the right side from all three opposites. Each stood out in different ways. Carlson didn’t play in the fourth set, but she ended her three-set day with 7 kills on .208 hitting and a team-high 6 total blocks. Osunsanmi had 9 kills on .259 hitting and 1 total block. Renee Jones, who played all four sets on the Red team, had 5 kills on 13 swings without an error. She also threw in a block assist. The Red team had a wrinkle in their rotation with Siapani occasionally coming out for an opposite when she rotated to the front row. The Wildcats went without a setter on those occasions with the libero typically bump setting the ball. The change was to address the issue of having a small setter in the front row.“That’s something that we’re going to have to do if she’s the setter that wins out,” Stubbs said. “You know, the teams are going to go right after her because she has a small presence, and so you put a bigger block in because we have three opposites that are able to play, and then you run that offense that time without a setter on the floor. We have people that are capable.”In the middle, Tucker tied Carlson with 6 total blocks, but one of hers was solo. She also had 5 kills but countered with 5 errors for a .000 hitting percentage. When asked to name a player who was especially impressive, Stubbs singled out Flemister. The sophomore played on both teams. She had 2 kills on 5 swings without an error. She added 5 total blocks.“She showed that she was able to play the entire time, and as a blocker and as an attacker, so she stood out in a good way to me,” Stubbs said. The competition for setter continues to be the biggest question for Arizona. Sample is taller and she spread the ball around nicely, finding her opposites on a regular basis. However, the hitters on Siapani’s team were more efficient. Her sets turned into kills at a .357 clip while Sample’s scored at a .248 clip. Siapani actually had 6 fewer attempts than Sample, but her side scored on 41 of her sets compared to 30 for Sample. The biggest problem for all of the Wildcats was serving. As the match wore on, it became a war of service errors.“We have to be able to serve the ball in the court,” Stubbs said. “That goes without saying. There is a philosophy, if you just go after it as hard as you can, eventually it’ll go in. But we’re missing balls that were way too long, that there was not a chance that it was going to go in. So for me, it’s about serving and passing, and then everything else will come.”Overall, though, there were positives that came out of the scrimmage if only getting on the floor in front of fans.“We didn’t serve very well, but I’m excited about the group, and I’m excited that they got a reality check of what volleyball looks like and what we need to do more of,” Stubbs said.

Tyrese Haliburton reveals that Giannis Antetokounmpo is impossibly hard to scheme against
Tyrese Haliburton reveals that Giannis Antetokounmpo is impossibly hard to scheme against originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. Now that he is on the Miami Heat, Giannis Antetokounmpo will be a weapon for the team. Everyone in the NBA is familiar with his impact when he was playing for the Milwaukee Bucks, but now he will be the star in South Beach alongside Bam Adebayo. He is one of the most dominant players in the league, so it is not surprising that other players are wary of him and the Heat moving forward. As the Bucks' fiercest rivals, Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers were quite familiar with the Greek Freak.Tyrese Haliburton knows Giannis Antetokounmpo is impossible to prepare forOver the years, the Bucks and Pacers became fierce rivals. While the Bucks have had tremendous success, it seems Antetokounmpo and the team struggled to win against Haliburton's Pacers. It was a fierce rivalry with trash talk on both sides, but it seems Indiana won the war, especially with the two postseason series victories.Despite how it looked, the Pacers did struggle against the Bucks from time to time. They might have a lot of wins against them, but head coach Rick Carlisle was hard at work making adjustments, setting up schemes, and preparing his team to play against the Bucks.MORE: Giannis Antetokounmpo gets honest about what he wants ahead with the Heat of the 2026-27 seasonOne of the hardest players to prepare for is Antetokounmpo. Considering he is tall, impossibly strong, and quick, it is easy to see why he is such a dominant player. His physical strengths have helped him become a top player, but the way he uses that body to his advantage is also a big part of his success."We’ve just had so many different battles with Milwaukee that it’s hard not to say Giannis because we’ve played him so many times. Whatever scheme, he averaged, I think, like 50. We won, I think 4 out of 5. But it’s like, you can do whatever you want, but sometimes it’s nothing," Haliburton said about Antetokounmpo during a Numbers on the Board episode.Antetokounmpo joining the Heat is a big deal in the Eastern Conference. They will be playing against some of the top contenders like the defending champions, the New York Knicks, but it will be quite tough for the Heat to stand out despite the level of talent they have now.More NBA news:Nikola Jovic remains untouchable in the Klay Thompson trade talksDoc Rivers believes that Erik Spoelstra and Steve Kerr belong in the Hall of Fame alongside him alreadyHow Erik Spoelstra's belief has helped Davion Mitchell stand out for the HeatNorman Powell speaks about the real reason why he never got to play alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo in MiamiNo one is more excited about Giannis Antetokounmpo playing for the Heat than Erik Spoelstra

Charles Lee loves how the Hornets players are working together in the offseason
Charles Lee loves how the Hornets players are working together in the offseason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. After the 2025-26 season, the Charlotte Hornets are entering a new era without the stalwarts from the previous era. LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges were loyal players to the franchise, but it did not work out in the end. Despite their lengthy stint with the Hornets, they never reached the postseason during their tenure. The Hornets front office decided that it was time for a new era in Charlotte. They traded both players away, which has led to a huge shift for the Hornets, but thankfully, they have a team that is fully focused on helping each other develop with a similar goal.Charles Lee is glad to see how the Hornets are bonding ahead of the 2026-27 seasonWith players like Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel taking charge now, it seems there is a good environment for the Hornets. They might be young, but it seems that they are ready to step up and become the star players for the Hornets. At the same time, head coach Charles Lee has done a great job of establishing a strong culture within the team. That was apparent even with the former players on the team, but now, it is clear as day that the players are enjoying themselves in the space that Lee cleared out for them.MORE: Kon Knueppel lays out a goal for the Hornets in the postseasonEven in the offseason, it seems the Hornets are doing well with how they have bonded together. They are all working hard to be the best versions of themselves ahead of the 2026-27 season, which is quite good because it is important to be prepared ahead of a big year."It's so cool. Walking by the weight room and seeing six guys in there talking trash to each other, or the leaderboard that our performance staff has put together and they're all jockeying for position, or on the court during Summer League practices watching Brandon Miller interact with our young guys, Moussa staying after for practices, and Kon doing similar things," Lee said on WSOC-TV about how his players are bonding together."All the relationships, all the organic things that happen when you have a team that's so committed to being in town and committing to each other, are really fun to watch."Lee will be having a hard time playing against some of the top teams in the league. However, it seems he is prepared for the high-pressure season ahead because he believes in his team, and he knows that his coaching is working with the players.More NBA news:LaMelo Ball's return data to Charlotte while playing for Minnesota has been revealedChris Finch reveals that LaMelo Ball will open up Anthony Edwards to play his natural positionBrandon Miller knows that it is tough to see LaMelo Ball getting tradedKon Knueppel speaks about LaMelo Ball's exit with the HornetsThe Hornets have made a signing that explains the LaMelo Ball trade

(AP Photo/Rusty Jones)2026-08-16T00:59:40Z SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Candace Parker and Elena Delle Donne both used their Hall of Fame speeches to serve as a love letter to basketball. The sport has given so much to them, culminating with enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday night.Parker carried a ball up to the podium for her speech as part of the 2026 class that also included the 1996 U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team, Chamique Holdsclaw, NBA player Amar’e Stoudemire, longtime NBA official Joey Crawford, NBA coaches Doc Rivers and Mike D’Antoni, and Gonzaga coach Mark Few.“It felt weird to walk on the stage without the reason I’m here today,’ Parker said, talking to the ball. ”We did a lot together: dunk on UConn at UConn, shimmied over our right shoulder and hit that sick fadeway, had our own signature shoe, first woman to grace the cover of NBA2K. ... We stand on this podium as first-ballot Hall of Famers.” Parker, who won three WNBA titles, two MVPs, a pair of championships at Tennessee and two Olympic gold medals, then broke down while closing her speech, saying that “we were meant to be a love story that began 27 years ago.”Delle Donne also used her speech as a love letter to the game with all the ups and downs she faced in her career. But she always kept life in perspective, thanks to her older sister Lizzie, who is blind and deaf. “She never played in front of thousands of people, never had a standing ovation. never been interviewed after a big win. Yet I’ve never met anyone stronger,” Delle Donne said, choking up. “Thank you all for keeping me going.”Delle Donne won MVP awards in 2015 and 2019, the second of which came when she led the Washington Mystics to their lone WNBA championship. Delle Donne became the first player in league history to shoot more than 50% from the field, 40% from behind the 3-point line and 90% from the free-throw line. Holdsclaw went on to have an 11-year WNBA career. She also thanked the 1996 Olympic team, saying she had posters of their players on her wall when she was in high school. That team helped start the Americans’ 30-year Olympic dominance that has seen the U.S. win eight straight gold medals.Few has been Gonzaga’s coach since 1999 and has led the team to the NCAA Tournament every year. He’s won numerous West Coast Conference championships and reached the NCAA title game twice.“What a crazy, surreal moment for me,” Few said. “The town I grew up in had a population of 1,500 people and had one stoplight. Minnesota defeated the Las Vegas Aces 92-87 on Saturday night, improving to a league-best 29-7. The Lynx have won four consecutive games and nine of their last 10, giving them a 3.5-game advantage over the Golden State Valkyries.Rookie guard Olivia Miles led Minnesota with 23 points and eight assists against Las Vegas. Natasha Howard grabbed 11 rebounds, while the Lynx connected on 11 3-pointers and made 15 of their 16 free-throw attempts.A’ja Wilson delivered 32 points for the Aces, but Minnesota held off Las Vegas late to earn its second victory over the championship contender in eight days. The Lynx already have clinched a playoff berth. Every opponent in that stretch currently occupies a playoff position. The most important games will come against Golden State. The 24-9 Valkyries are the only team within four games of Minnesota and represent the most immediate threat to the Lynx’s hold on the top seed.Minnesota already owns two victories over Golden State this season. The Lynx earned an 87-84 home win June 4 before winning 81-75 at Chase Center on June 19. Another victory Wednesday would give Minnesota a commanding advantage in the season series. The teams will meet again five days later at Target Center.Lynx Keep Delivering Against WNBA ContendersSaturday’s victory gave Minnesota the regular-season series against Las Vegas. The Aces won the first meeting 100-97 on June 13, but the Lynx responded with consecutive victories in August. Miles scored 26 points in a 98-87 win Aug. 8 before leading Minnesota again Saturday. The Lynx have established the league’s best record by consistently beating quality opponents. They have defeated Golden State twice, Las Vegas twice and also own victories over Indiana, New York, Atlanta, Dallas and Washington. Minnesota also has been quick to respond when things go wrong. The Lynx suffered a surprising 89-82 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Aug. 6. They followed that setback by winning four straight games, including three against current playoff teams. Minnesota first beat Las Vegas at Target Center before defeating Dallas 103-90 behind Kayla McBride’s 43-point performance. The Lynx then escaped Portland with an 85-81 victory before completing the season-series win over the Aces. That stretch has reinforced Minnesota’s status as the team to beat.MORE: Indiana Fever schedule: Next five games, standings and latest team updateDifficult Tests Remain For MinnesotaThe Lynx control their path to the No. 1 seed, but their remaining schedule offers little room for complacency. Washington and Atlanta are fighting for postseason position, while New York remains a dangerous opponent despite an inconsistent season.Minnesota also will finish the regular season with consecutive games against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. The Lynx travel to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sept. 22 before hosting Indiana two nights later. Minnesota defeated the Fever 108-100 in their first meeting Aug. 2. Miles scored 28 points in that victory as the Lynx held off one of the league’s most dangerous offenses. The Lynx have received contributions throughout their rotation. Miles has emerged as one of the WNBA’s most productive guards, Napheesa Collier has returned to an elite level and veterans McBride, Courtney Williams and Howard have provided stability.Minnesota’s position is enviable, but the Lynx have bigger goals than finishing with the league’s best regular-season record. Three Ohio State players named to Outland Trophy preseason watch list
We continue on with the college football preseason award watch lists with the announcement of the Outland Trophy 2026 preseason watch list. As you would expect, there is some Ohio State flavor to the list, with three Buckeyes being named by the Football Writers Association of America. First handed out in 1946, the Outland Trophy is awarded to the best college football interior lineman. And with all the experience and ability the OSU offensive line has coming back this season, three of those linemen, Austin Siereveld, Carson Hinzman, and Luke Montgomery, were among the names appearing alongside other talented linemen.Siereveld, a two-year starter who was thrust into action during Ohio State's 2025 College Football Playoff national championship run, is heading into his redshirt junior season and was arguably the best Ohio State lineman last season. He was solid at left tackle, but may be moved to another position to get the best five guys on the field together. No matter where he plays, he should be the anchor of the line again and will be among some of the best offensive linemen available in the NFL draft next April.Hinzman, now entering his fifth year, grabbed the starting spot at center in 2023, moved to guard to start the 2024 season, but then was the starting center again for the national championship run when Rimington winner Seth McGlaughlin was lost for the season with injury. The Wisconsin native was then the unquestioned starter at center last season and was an AFCA First Team All-American and Third Team All-Big Ten. He is also on the Rimington preseason watch list for the best center in college football.Montgomery, like the other two, also carved out a piece of his legacy during the national championship run in 2024. He started the last two games of Ohio State's run and gained the confidence of the coaching staff to start all 14 games last season on the interior. Alexander Volkanovski vs. Movsar Evloev, Petr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili trilogy bout set for UFC 333
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 01: Alexander Volkanovski of Australia prepares to face Diego Lopes of Brazil in the UFC featherweight championship fight during the UFC 325 event at Qudos Bank Arena on February 01, 2026 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) UFC 333’s headlining fights are set with a long-awaited matchup between Alexander Volkanovski and Movsar Evloev, and Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili settling the score in a trilogy bout. The UFC officially announced the fights during Saturday’s UFC 330 broadcast, with Volkanovski’s featherweight title defense against Evloev being marked as the main event for the Oct. 24 event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Volkanovski (28-4) seeks the second successful defense of his second reign, while Evloev finally gets his championship opportunity after going 20-0 in his pro career.Yan (20-5) delivered arguably the best performance of 2025 when he defeated Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 323 to reclaim the bantamweight title, snap Dvalishvili’s 14-fight win streak, and avenge a loss from their first meeting in 2023. “No Mercy” has now won four straight fights following a career-worst three-fight skid and looks to put the stamp on his rivalry with Dvalishvili. For Dvalishvili (21-5), he is coming off of a well-deserved layoff after successfully defending his belt three times in 2025 before Yan foiled his attempt to become the first UFC fighter to record four successful defenses in a calendar year. Prior to that loss, Dvalishvili’s seven-year unbeaten streak included victories over Yan, Jose Aldo, Sean O’Malley, Henry Cejudo, Umar Nurmagomedov, and Cory Sandhagen, among others. All four headlining fighters hold spots in the MMA Fighting Pound-for-Pound Rankings, with Yan at 3, Volkanovski at 5 (tied with Tom Aspinall and Ilia Topuria), Dvalishvili at 8 (tied with Sean Strickland) and Evloev at 19.Other main card bouts announced for the event include Lone’er Kavanagh vs. Ramazan Temirov, Alexander Volkov vs. Rizvan Kuniev, and Arnold Allen vs. Aaron Pico.Several preliminary bouts are also now official, Dominick Reyes vs. Azamat Murzakanov, Abus Magomedov vs. Cam Rowston, Nikita Krylov vs. Abdul Rakhman Yakhyaev, and Grant Dawson vs. Nurullo Aliev.UFC 333 takes place at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 24.

Instant Takeaways from the Vikings preseason game against the Giants
It wasn't a particularly entertaining ordeal, but the Minnesota Vikings came away from their first preseason game with several positives. On a sunny day at MetLife Stadium, the Vikings set the tone early in a 13-10 win, offering optimism that their offseason goal of improving the run game could translate into on-field production.Of course, improving the run game is only one factor in returning Minnesota's offense to prominence. Kevin O'Connell wanted improved quarterback play, and while Kyler Murray only threw three passes, Carson Wentz showed command of the offense that could lead one to believe that although one quarterback competition is settled, another could quietly be brewing.Below are three instant takeaways from the Vikings' victory in their preseason opener.Instant Takeaways from the Vikings preseason game against the GiantsThe running game looked goodEven O'Connell's most loyal defenders can't hide his team's deficiencies in the run game. Since taking over in 2022, Minnesota has ranked in the bottom 10 in rushing yards three times, never higher than 19th in 2024. The Vikings hired former Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith to emphasize a wide-zone running scheme, hoping it would make teams think twice about doubling Justin Jefferson.Minnesota's first drive gave us a glimpse of what could be coming. Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason combined for six runs for 44 yards, each breaking off a run of 15-plus yards on the drive. On top of the offensive line providing good rushing lanes, rookie fullback Max Bredeson helped Jones pop off for an 18-yard gain on the Vikings' first play from scrimmage.Vikings' first play of the preseason is a 17-yard Aaron Jones run with Max Bredeson out front. That'll work! pic.twitter.com/bckauBpuTN— Will Ragatz (@WillRagatz) August 15, 2026Overall, Minnesota ran 26 times for 112 yards (omitting Wentz's clock-killing kneel-down). That balanced the 27 dropbacks the Vikings called, aligning with their run-first approach used in last season's five-game winning streak at the end of the year. This doesn't mean O'Connell has magically fixed his pass-happy tendencies, but it is a step in the right direction: he is practicing what the team emphasized throughout the offseason.Wentz had command of the offenseLost in Minnesota's QB1 controversy was how effective Wentz was in limited reps. When I attended training camp on Aug. 1, Wentz took advantage of his limited reps, working through his progressions and putting the ball in tight spots for his receivers to make a play. That was the case on Saturday, too. Wentz went 9/14 for 81 yards, with one going for a beautiful one-yard touchdown pass to Myles Price, where only he could get the ball. Earlier in the game, Wentz again rifled a pass to Price, providing the receiver an opportunity to shield the defender and pick up 28 yards on the play..@Vikings WR Myles Price with the gorgeous one-hander in the end zone 🔥Stream on @NFLPluspic.twitter.com/eJNwJzB8Vm— NFL (@NFL) August 15, 2026Wentz clinched the game with a six-yard strike on 3rd-and-3 to receiver Dante Fleming to seal the win. Contrasted with J.J. McCarthy's up-and-down day (4/7 for 34 yards, including a botched jet sweep that resulted in a one-yard run by McCarthy), Wentz appeared to be in total control of the offense. He replaced Max Brosmer after the second-year quarterback left with a wrist injury. Instead of failing with inferior teammates around him, Wentz gave off a sense of security under center. It makes me wonder if it will be him, not McCarthy, as the first quarterback off the bench in the event of injury or poor play from Murray. The defense is still greatThe Vikings' first-team defense played one series, giving Jaxson Dart flashbacks to his Week 16 meeting with Brian Flores last year. New York picked up one first down against the first-team unit, but ended up punting after six plays when Dallas Turner cleaned up a blitz by Blake Cashman. The Giants netted only five yards on the drive.Minnesota's backups were effective as well, intercepting two passes. Linebacker Jacob Roberts and rookie safety Jacob Thomas each picked off passes, showcasing that the defense can fluster opposing quarterbacks even when guys further down the depth chart see the field.Safety Jay Ward, EDGE rusher Bo Richter, and defensive tackle Elijah Williams each added sacks, too. These are three players who have opportunities not only to make the roster but also to contribute meaningful snaps. Ward is currently listed as a first-team safety, but the position group is crowded. He briefly knocked Dart out of the game with his sack, maybe putting a stamp on his path to the starting role.A big hit from Jay Ward to get the sack on Jaxson Dart 😳(Via @NFL) pic.twitter.com/3jw4uaoLt3— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) August 15, 2026This article originally appeared on Vikings Wire: Instant Takeaways from the Vikings preseason game against the Giants

Mariners Beat Astros 10-5 in First Game of Offseason
Aug 15, 2026; Houston, Texas, USA; Seattle Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor (12) is congratulated by second baseman Cole Young (2) after both players score a run against the Houston Astros during the second inning at Daikin Park. Mandatory Credit: Erik Williams-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect That was an enjoyable baseball game. The Mariners beat the Astros 10-5 on Saturday in Houston. The offense strung together a bunch of hits early and found some power late. Emerson Hancock turned in another outing so good that it would have seemed laughable about this time last year. The season is over, of course, and the Mariners are still eight games below .500. But this was a nice reminder that even losing baseball seasons can have a few gems.Despite the final line, Hancock was in trouble right out of the gate. In the bottom of the first, he walked Yordan Alvarez and gave up three straight singles to open the scoring at 1-0. None of the singles were hit too hard, but with the bases loaded and just one out, this felt like a looming clunker. Then Hancock put together a fun little sequence to Christian Walker:Fastball paint, called strikeFastball paint, called ball but challenged for a strikeNasty sweeper away, chased for strike three and out number twoThen Hancock put together came a fun sequence to Taylor Trammell:Fastball down the middle, called strikeCurveball below the zone, chased foulFastball up in the zone, can’t touch it for strike threeThe Astros had Hancock dead to rights, but he wriggled out of it with two strikeouts on six total pitches. It was a phenomenal escape from the first inning. And from there, Hancock was fantastic. He gave up a Crawford Boxes homer to Christian Vázquez in the second, but he faced the minimum the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Now, it was just four innings, but I love “faced the minimum” stretches for pitchers, so I was looking forward to the seventh. Things started off well. Hancock got Walker to chase a high fastball for a strikeout. He fell behind Trammell 3-1 before getting a pop up — way, way up — that hit the roof and fell back into Hancock’s glove for what looked like the second out. Unfortunately, that’s considered a foul ball in Daikin Park, keeping the at bat alive. On the next pitch, Hancock got Trammell looking with a called strike, but Trammell successfully challenged for ball four. This wasn’t quite the end of the “faced the minimum” stretch, as a double play was still in order. And what do you know, Hancok got Cam Smith to hit a hard grounder right to the bag at first. Naylor scooped it, stepped on the bag for an out, then fired to second for the turn. But the throw hit Trammell while sliding into second (he probably would have been safe anyways), and this seemed the end to the “faced the minimum” stretch. I suddenly realized I was standing up — man, there really hasn’t been much to root for this season. Then, improbably, out of nowhere, with LaMonte Wade Jr. at the plate in a 1-1 count, Hancock turned and picked off Trammell at second to end the inning. I whooped audibly. Does this actually count as facing the minimum? Hancock did technically face four different batters in the inning, which would imply no. But he also got the first three batters out, and Wade got a fresh at bat to start the eighth, so yes? I don’t know what the ruling is here, but that was the most fun I’ve had watching an inning of Mariners baseball in a while.Anyways, Hancock’s night was over after seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out eight on 16 whiffs. The Astros managed just four hard hit balls against him. Hancock with the outing reached the 2.0 fWAR mark on the season, making him tied for the 48th best starter in the majors this year. Unbelievable. Also unbelievable: The Mariners offense was actually great from beginning to end on Saturday. Julio led off the second with a hard line drive single up the middle. Josh Naylor fell behind 0-2 and swung at a heater at his eyes, but got enough of it to poke a grounder up the middle and put runners on first and third. Cole Young followed with a dribbler to the first-base side of the mound. Hayden Wesneski charged after it but missed with a lunge, allowing Julio to score. After a strikeout from Cal Raleigh, Victor Robles hit a slicing line drive into right center gap. Varsho gave it a dive but fell just short and the ball trickled to the wall. Naylor, tagging at second on the play, came around to score easily. Young, not tagging from first, nearly caught up with him and scored with a slide into Naylor’s rear. Regardless, it was a two-run triple for Robles. Brendan Donovan followed with a single to make it 4-1.Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video. The Mariners had runners most innings from there. In the fourth, Young singled, Robles walked, and Donovan drove in another run with a single. In the fifth, Dominic Canzone and Julio each reached to lead off the inning. But they ultimately didn’t score, with Raleigh finishing the inning with a weak fly out. This was a fun game overall, and I hate to sour the recap with analysis, but it’s pretty clear how opposing pitchers are attacking Cal (these were all fastballs), and it’s pretty clear he can’t lay off. There were more runners in the sixth and seventh, but they didn’t score again until the eighth. Robles singled with two outs then stole second. Brock Rodden swatted what looked like it might be his first big league home run, but it clanked off that weird, two-story, chainlink, garage door, bullpen fence(?) in left center for an RBI double. Donovan followed with another single to score Rodden — his third RBI single of the day.Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video. The game was 7-2 at this point. José Ferrer came on to relieve Hancock. He gave up a double and a homer to make the game 7-4. If the season weren’t over, I might give you some analysis on this inning. Alas! The Mariners couldn’t stop scoring in the top of the ninth. Julio led off with a sharp ground ball single. Naylor dunked a looping single. And Young juuuuust snuck out a wall scraper to right for a three-run homer. With 10 runs on 15 hits, every Mariner reached based today except Randy Arozarena (understandable!) and Raleigh (understandable…). This was a great night for the offense.Your browser does not support the video tag. Download the video. The Astros would get one more. Jose Altuve led off the bottom of the ninth with a line drive into the right-center gap. It probably would have been a single or a double but Victor Robles laid out and landed nowhere near the ball and allowed it roll to the wall for a triple. A groundout scored him. Whatever. Seranthony Domínguez quickly set down the next two batters to deliver the Mariners a 10-5 win. It was the most enjoyable game in weeks.

Petr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili title trilogy fight co-headlines UFC 333
Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili will conclude their trilogy in the UFC 333 co-main event. After splitting results over their first two meetings, the rubber match between reigning bantamweight champion Yan (20-5 MMA, 12-4 UFC) and former titleholder Dvalishvili (21-2 MMA, 14-3 UFC) is official for the Oct. 24 fight card at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi (Paramount+).The bout was announced during Saturday's UFC 330 broadcast.Yan, No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie bantamweight rankings, reunited with the belt in December when he outworked Dvalishvili to a unanimous decision at UFC 323. It was a redemptive performance from the Russian, who suffered a lopsided loss on the scorecards in the first matchup in March 2023.The 32-year-old first became champion in July 2020, but lost it in his first defense when he landed an illegal knee on Aljamain Sterling that led to him being disqualified. Yan's subsequent years included a three-fight losing skid, but he's rebounded with four in a row to become a two-time champ.No. 2-ranked Dvalishvili will attempt to prevent Yan from getting a title defense in this reign and show that he was not his best self at UFC 323. Prior to the rematch defeat, the 35-year-old has won 14 consecutive bout, including three title defenses in 2025.There were questions about whether Dvalishvili's attempt at record-setting championship activity played a role in his loss to Yan in the rematch, and now he gets a chance to come out ahead in the rivalry. The latest UFC 333 lineup includes:Alexander Volkanovski vs. Movsar Evloev – for featherweight titlePetr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili – for bantamweight titleThis article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Petr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili title trilogy fight co-headlines UFC 333

Rescuers dig through rubble and landslides after Indonesia quake kills 47
In this photo released by the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), rescuers search for victims at a damaged building following an earthquake in Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026. (BASARNAS via AP)2026-08-16T02:48:46Z LABUAN BAJO, Indonesia (AP) — Searchers dug through collapsed buildings and landslide debris Sunday in eastern Indonesia as they searched for bodies and possible survivors a day after a powerful earthquake killed at least 47 people, injured more than 100 and displaced thousands. At least 24 people died in Manggarai regency and 17 in neighboring East Manggarai, with additional fatalities reported in Sikka, Ngada and Ende regencies, the National Disaster Management Agency said. Rescuers were still searching for villagers feared buried beneath landslides triggered by the quake across six regencies on Flores, a predominantly Catholic island in Muslim-majority Indonesia. The USGS said the magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck 68 kilometers (42 miles) north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province. The quake, at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles) off the coast of Flores, rattled much of the island and sent residents fleeing in panic. Tremors were also felt in neighboring West Nusa Tenggara and parts of southern Sulawesi. The disaster agency said the quake destroyed more than 900 homes and damaged nearly 450 more, forcing about 5,000 people into temporary shelters. Thousands more spent the night outdoors, fearing strong aftershocks. At least 167 public facilities, including schools, health centers and churches, were also damaged.Relief workers have begun distributing rice, ready-to-eat meals, drinking water, blankets and medicine, while emergency shelters were being set up for displaced residents. Authorities said restoring electricity and communications as well as delivering aid to remote villages isolated by landslides remained among the biggest challenges. The quake also struck Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo National Park, one of Indonesia’s best-known tourist destinations. Landslides blocked sections of the Trans-Flores Highway, a roughly 700-kilometer (435-mile) road linking communities across the mountainous island. Read More Many residents continued to sleep outside rather than risk returning to damaged homes. “The shaking was terrifying, so intense that my house nearly collapsed,” said Anastasia Imad, a farmer in Labuan Bajo, speaking from a makeshift green tent beside her damaged home. “We feared the aftershocks would bring it down on us while we slept.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Rescue teams resumed searches Sunday in areas that had remained inaccessible since the quake, particularly in Manggarai, East Manggarai and Nagekeo regencies.“We have cleared most landslides and reopened roads to previously isolated villages, although communication disruptions and power outages continue to hamper search efforts,” said Fathur Rahman, head of the Search and Rescue Office in Maumere, the capital of Sikka regency. He said rescuers were focusing on searching the rubble of collapsed homes and other buildings for possible victims.Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because of its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a horseshoe-shaped arc of seismic faults and volcanoes.Flores has experienced some of the country’s deadliest disasters. A powerful earthquake and tsunami in 1992 killed about 2,500 people on the island. In 2018, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake triggered a tsunami on Sulawesi that killed more than 4,400 people. In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 quake off Sumatra unleashed a tsunami that killed about 230,000 people in a dozen countries.___Associated Press writers Niniek Karmini and Edna Tarigan in Jakarta, Indonesia, contributed to this report.

(AP Photo/Robert Simmons)2026-08-16T02:26:23Z RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Joey Logano continued his surge toward the NASCAR Chase, winning Saturday night at Richmond Raceway with a late-race charge on fresh tires. The three-time Cup Series champion scored his second victory in the past four races while surging from 17th to ninth in the points standings. With 24 laps remaining, the Team Penske driver snatched the lead from Christopher Bell, who had pitted 20 laps earlier and was trying to stretch his tires to the finish on Richmond’s abrasive surface.Logano raced to his 39th career victory and third at Richmond. He won by 0.392 seconds over Chase Briscoe, who led a race-high 171 of 400 laps but was unable to catch Logano after losing the lead just before his final pit stop.Briscoe had a best finish of 11th in nine previous starts at Richmond, one of only three active tracks where he had yet to score a top 10. After qualifying second, he passed pole-sitter Ryan Blaney on the first lap to lead the first lap of his career on the 0.75-mile oval.Austin Cindric finished third, followed by Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott. Hamlin family dedicationIn an emotional ceremony Friday morning, Richmond Raceway dedicated the grandstand seats where Denny Hamlin’s parents sat for years watching NASCAR races long before their son became a 64-time winner in the Cup Series. Hamlin’s father, Dennis, died in a house fire last December. The track’s tribute was among the highlights of a homecoming weekend for Hamlin, who grew up about 20 minutes from the track.“It’s really the time I get to see my brother and sister that still live up here,” said Hamlin, who lives in the Charlotte, N.C., area. “I’ve got lots of high school friends that have their own campsite here. It will be amazing if they don’t get arrested.” Mirror drivingIn an appearance on Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s podcast this week, Ty Gibbs lobbied for removing the digital rearview camera that NASCAR implemented four years ago. Gibbs joked that some Cup drivers would be out of the series without the high-tech device that makes blocking easier by anticipating an opponent’s move. He’s gotten no feedback from NASCAR but hopes a change could be made in the offseason.“I didn’t hear anything on it, but I thought I’d recommend it,” GIbbs said. “I just think everybody probably agrees to it, too. I mean, a lot of people do, so I thought I’d say it. I think it could happen. They took windshield wipers off, and we run in the rain still, so I think it could happen.” Read More Another selloutRichmond Raceway announced its grandstands were full for the second consecutive year, marking the 11th sellout in 24 Cup Series races this season. 2026 Pan Pacific Championships: Kate Douglass sets 50-meter freestyle world record for the 2nd time in 1 day
On Saturday morning, Kate Douglass casually set a world record in her 50-meter freestyle heat. Saturday night, she swam the race again — and absolutely demolished her own record.Douglass sprinted to a gold medal in the event with a mind-boggling time of 23.19 seconds, pulling away to leave a sizable gap between her and the competition. The time shaved a full three-tenths of a second off her time from that morning’s heat, and left the commentators completely speechless.Douglass had been trading the record with fellow USA teammate Gretchen Walsh throughout the summer. After Douglass set a record of 23.59 in Indianapolis on June 19, Walsh beat the record just eight days later, recording a time of 23:55.On Saturday, Douglass took that stat back with a 23:49 — before smashing it hours later.Walsh came in second on Saturday, picking up the silver with a time of 23:74. Australia’s Meg Harris came in third with a time of 23.89.After setting a world record in the 500 free, Douglass didn’t have much time to enjoy the win. When Douglass was accepting her gold medal, she was still wearing her swim cap — because she immediately had to turn around and race again in the 200-meter breaststroke. She casually swam to a silver medal. This story will be updated.

Camden Brown stands out for Cowboys with 2 touchdown catches in 17-7 preseason win against Seahawks
SEATTLE (AP) — Rookie Camden Brown had two touchdown catches, including a diving, one-handed snag, to help lead the Dallas Cowboys past the Seattle Seahawks 17-7 in the teams’ preseason opener Saturday night. Brown caught a 39-yard pass from Sam Howell in the second quarter to put Dallas up 10-7. On the first drive of the third quarter, Brown snared a fade pass from Joe Milton in the back left corner of the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown. An undrafted free agent who started his career at Auburn before transferring to Georgia Southern, Brown has stood out throughout training camp. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound wide receiver has made good use of his frame, and demonstrated on Saturday he can also do so in an NFL game. Milton, who's entering his third pro season and second with Dallas, was impressive in his bid to be the Cowboys’ backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott. The 2024 sixth-round draft pick completed six of his first eight passes against the Seahawks' backup cornerbacks, and finished 12 of 15 for 107 yards and the TD to Brown. Howell, who is competing with Milton for the Cowboys' No. 2 job, was 8 of 12 for 94 yards and his touchdown pass to Brown. With Sam Darnold sitting out, Seattle rotated its backup quarterbacks throughout the night. Drew Lock led the Seahawks on a 13-play, 80-yard scoring drive to open the game. It was capped by a 5-yard touchdown catch by Montorie Foster Jr.Brandon Aubrey converted a 29-yard field goal to cut Seattle’s lead to 7-3 early in the second quarter. The Seahawks responded with a 15-play drive, but Jason Myers pushed a 45-yard attempt wide right before Brown caught his first touchdown pass. Jalen Milroe, currently entrenched as Seattle’s third-string quarterback, was 5 of 8 for 36 yards. Lock was 9 of 13 for 40 yards and a touchdown. Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue, who is competing with Phil Mafah to be Javonte Williams’ backup, was stifled by Seattle’s defense. Blue had 19 yards on eight carries. George Holani, one of the few healthy Seahawks running backs, paced Seattle with 12 carries for 42 yards. Zach Charbonnet, Emanuel Wilson and 2026 first-round pick Jadarian Price – all of whom could be options for Seattle this season at running back – sat out with injuries. Tyrice Knight led the Seahawks with 10 tackles, all in the first half. Curtis Robinson paced the Cowboys with eight tackles. Foster had a team-high five catches for 36 yards for Seattle. Malik Davis ran for 39 yards on seven carries for Dallas.Seattle’s Rashad Rochelle had a 52-yard punt return in the third quarter. The teams combined for 21 penalties and 174 penalty yards InjuriesSeahawks: Tackle Amari Kight (leg) left in the second quarter and put ice on his lower leg on the sideline. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 14: (L-R) Opponents Mackenzie Dern and Gillian Robertson of Canada face off during the UFC 330 ceremonial weigh-in at Xfinity Mobile Arena on August 14, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Ed Mulholland/Zuffa LLC) This is the UFC 330 live blog for Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson, the strawweight championship co-main event Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.Dern is currently ranked at No. 7 on the MMA Fighting Pound-for-Pound chart, while Robertson is No. 6 at 115 pounds in the Global Rankings. This is the first title defense for Dern (16-5), who became champion this past October at UFC 321 where she defeated Virna Jandiroba to win a belt vacated by Zhang Weili. Dern, a decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion prior to pursuing a career in MMA, struggled to find consistency early in her UFC career, but strung together three crucial wins to put gold around her waist. She can cement herself as the true queen of the strawweight division with an impressive performance against Robertson.Canada’s Robertson (17-8) looks to become the first woman from her country to become UFC champion. Before Robertson, Alexis Davis, Valerie Letourneau, and Felicia Spencer all had their shot, but none were able to finish the story. Robertson began her UFC run as a flyweight but dropped down to 115 pounds and has since won five straight fights to earn her shot. She currently holds the record for the most UFC submissions by female fighter (7).Check out the UFC 330 live blog for Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson below.PreambleMackenzie Dern! Defending champion! It’s real! You know what’s more real? Gillian Robertson could become the first Canadian woman ever to become UFC champion and the first Canadian to win UFC gold since Georges St-Pierre. Kind of crazy when you think about it, eh?Always tell me the oddsPlenty of respect for the champ as she’s a comfortable favorite at -215, per FanDuel. Robertson the underdog at +180.Round 1Keith Peterson the referee for your co-main event.Dern aggressive with the jab, she’s eager to advance. Robertson with the first takedown attempt, Dern holding strong. She’s controlling Robertson’s head as she pushes her to the fence. Robertson reverses the position then separates. Robertson telegraphs a takedown attempt and Dern easily avoids it.Dern breaks up a jab battle with a nice left hook on target. She definitely looks more comfortable standing, there’s a power advantage, too. Dern punches her way in, nice level change, and she gets the takedown. The champ staying busy, sneaking in strikes where she can while controlling Robertson. Dern in Robertson’s half guard, she hunts for a kimura. Good job by Robertson to break that attempt up, but Dern is staying heavy.Beautiful jiu-jitsu from Dern as she moves to Robertson’s back and gets a hook in. Dern all-in on a choke and that is clooooooooose. Robertson just manages to shift into an angle to stifle the choke and she puts a thumb up as the round comes to an end. Great round for Dern.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Dern.Round 2Dern immediately gets the takedown. Her confidence is through the roof and technique is on point. Robertson staying calm, but Dern is slicing through her guard like butter. Looking bad for the Canadian. Dern again working to take the back and with a lot of time left on the clock this time. The end could be nigh.Choke attempt from Dern, Robertson trying to turn into it and she manages to get there. The challenger in top position now, Dern keeping her legs in position to attack form bottom. Robertson fighting to keep Dern away from her leg. They roll on the mat, legs tangled, Dern still threatening the leg. Robertson attacking with hammerfists, not enough to deter Dern. After all that, it’s Dern on top now, still forcing Robertson to defend the leg. The champ content to sit on Robertson, another round presumably in the books.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Dern. Overall, 20-18 Dern.Round 3Dern looking comfortable with her boxing. It’s target practice for Dern right now. Robertson busy on the feet, but there’s not a lot on these punches. She stuffs a Dern takedown attempt and lands a few short uppercuts in the clinch. Dern pressuring her against the fence. The separate and Robertson starts to land a few jabs. Dern with a hard right. Robertson connects with a left. Dern answers with a body kick. More jabs from Robertson, she’s putting in an effort, at least. Dern with some excellent lateral movement to keep Robertson guessing. Takedown from Dern with a minute left.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Dern. Overall, 30-27 Dern.Round 4Dern still looking springy on the feet. Early takedown attempt and she has Robertson on her back. This could be the beginning of the end. Dern aggressively working to take the back again. Lots of time to work as Dern hunts for a choke.

Ohio State tight end makes John Mackey 2026 preseason watch list
The John Mackey Award has been around since 2000 and is handed out by the Nassau County Sports Commission annually to college football's most outstanding tight end. With a bunch of preseason college football award watch lists being unveiled recently, the Mackey Award got in on all of the fun, with an Ohio State tight end landing on the preseason watch list.To be frank, Ohio State has not been known for tight ends during its illustrious history, but this year, many believe Northwestern transfer Hunter Welcing could be a good one. He was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention last season and will be entering his Redshirt Senior campaign after transferring to Ohio State.Last year, Welcing tallied 28 catches for 296 yards (10.6 avg.) and two touchdowns to lead the tight end position in Evanston. Nate Roberts is projected by many to be the starting tight end for OSU, but the experience of Welcing could win out, especially with the loss of Max Klare and Will Kacmarek, who are now both in the NFL. And don't worry, Buckeye fans, if Roberts does grab the starting nod and receive a bigger volume of time, he could be added to the watch list later in the season. In the meantime, though, there's no doubt Welcing will be in the rotation with his size, experience, and ability. .@hunter_welcing earns a spot on the John Mackey Award Watch List. 🌰 pic.twitter.com/n807DTtOdh— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) August 5, 2026Ohio State has never had a John Mackey Award recipient, since it is arguably the best at producing elite wide receivers in the entire country, but it would be nice to get the recognition when the John Mackey Award is announced on December 11 during ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show.Contact/Follow us @BuckeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Ohio State news, notes, and opinion. Dorival Júnior reflects on draw with Coritiba
Dorival Júnior reflects on draw with CoritibaCoach Dorival Júnior spoke at a press conference after the 1-1 draw with Coritiba at MorumBIS in São Paulo (SP), in a match valid for the 23rd round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship.“It’s frustrating because, from one play, we ended up losing the chance for a win. And this is something that has been happening repeatedly in several matches. It’s what we’ve been focusing on and working on the most, but set pieces have been taking away a real chance for us to be in a much better position in the league,” the coach said.“We owe our fans because of what we tried to do in the first half, playing practically the entire time in the opponent’s half. But, once again, we lacked the most important thing, which is making the decisive play and finishing the job,” he added.Dorival also commented on the fans’ presence at the stadium.“The fans did their part, and they did it very well. Once again, we fell short. The responsibility is ours. Today our goalkeeper practically didn’t have to make a save, so we had the obligation to try something different so that we could end the match with a win,” he concluded.Tricolor return to the field against Bolívar-BOL on Tuesday (18) at 9:30 p.m., once again at MorumBIS, for the second leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana round of 16. In the Brasileirão, the next match will be against Chapecoense on Sunday (23) at 6:30 p.m. at Arena Condá, in Chapecó (SC).This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Makhachev already holds the record for the most successful UFC lightweight title defenses (4) and captured welterweight gold this past November with a dominant decision win over Jack Della Maddalena.Garry (17-1) has long touted himself as a future UFC champion and the time is now for him to put his money where his mouth is. The brash Irishman won his first eight UFC fights before losing a decision to Shavkat Rakhmonov, but has bounced back with consecutive victories over former champion Belal Muhammad and top contender Carlos Prates. Though Garry is a live underdog, dethroning Makhachev would unquestionably send major ripples through the MMA world.Check out the UFC 330 live blog for Islam Makhachev vs. Ian Machado Garry below.PreambleI know I keep beating this drum, but…Ilia Topuria. Not much damage to speak of, but Garry is fully in defense mode. “F*ck you, Garry” chants ringing out through Xfinity Mobile Arena. Ravens’ rookie pass-catchers dazzle in preseason win over Eagles
Aug 15, 2026; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane (6) is greeted by teammates after his touchdown catch during the second quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles at M&T Bank Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Jesse Minter notched his first win as the Baltimore Ravens’ head coach on Saturday night, taking down the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 24-7. “It was a great experience,” Minter said after the game. “I want to give a ton of credit to our coaching staff.” Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle led his unit to 440 yards and 31 first downs, dominating with long drives throughout the game and putting up lopsided time-of-possession and play-count numbers. On the other side of the ball, Minter and defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver oversaw a near-shutout; the Eagles’ only points came with 2:24 left in the game after averaging just 4.0 yards per play and going 0-for-9 on third down. Special teams was the Ravens’ shakiest area with second-year kicker Tyler Loop missing an early 49-yard field goal and rookie punter Ryan Eckley shanking his first pro attempt for just 31 yards. Both bounced back later in the game, but their performance did little to quell questions about the team’s specialists. Minter also gave a “major shout-out” to undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano, who completed 22 of his 28 passes for 224 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Minter even downplayed the turnover, saying that he “liked the throw that he made” and crediting Eagles cornerback Kelee Ringo for making a great play.Fagnano admitted in the locker room that he should not have attempted the aggressive cross-body pass on second down in the red zone. But that was the lone mistake from an otherwise impressive NFL debut by the former UConn starter who was thrust into Baltimore’s third-string quarterback role after Skylar Thompson suddenly landed on injured reserve this week.Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, who got the start with Lamar Jackson resting, completed six of his seven passes. Five were caught by rookie pass-catchers, including a 29-yard wheel route from fourth-round tight end Matt Hibner that really got the offense going.Big play to @MatthewHibner to get things started!!Tune in on @wbaltv11pic.twitter.com/Ci16UyZol2— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) August 15, 2026“I kind of blacked out after the catch,” Hibner said, adding that he may have celebrated too much with fellow rookie Ja’Kobi Lane. Lane, a third-round pick, took his turn in the spotlight, too. He has dazzled with near-daily highlights at training camp and added to his summer tally with an 18-yard grab from Huntley early on and capping his night with a 16-yard touchdown from Fagnano. Not to be outdone, Elijah Sarratt led the offense with six catches and 66 yards, though he did lose a fumble while trying to pick up extra yards after the catch. Sarratt said that his coaches and teammates – veterans and rookies alike – found him on the sidelines after the turnover and told him to keep his head up.After the game, Huntley said that the Ravens’ rookie pass-catchers “came ready to play and showed their talent today.” First-round guard Vega Ioane also impressed in his NFL debut, generally holding up in pass protection including this physical rep against Eagles edge rusher Arnold Ebeketie:CLEAROUT BLOCK BY @vegaioane17. 😳Tune in now on @wbaltv11. pic.twitter.com/sZKpHVRXLW— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) August 15, 2026Ioane played just two series, but that was all Ravens fans needed to see after the team’s guard woes over the last few years. They can rest easy knowing that Jackson will be well-protected this year, at least from the right guard spot.Center is a different story altogether. The Ravens have been searching for their new starter ever since Tyler Linderbaum left in free agency. They narrowly missed out on multiple coveted prospects during the draft and instead have turned to a hodgepodge of players to compete for the starting job. Former Colts backup Danny Pinter got the start vs. Philadelphia, followed by Jovaughn Gwyn, who came to Baltimore from Atlanta with offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford. Ex-Browns starter Ethan Pocic did not come into the game until the fourth quarter, though he is coming off a torn Achilles and has had significantly less time in the Ravens offense than his competition. Saturday night’s game did little to solidify any player’s grip on the starting center job. Minter and Doyle have both said they want to give Pocic a fair shot once he is back to 100% physically and fully up to speed in the offense. Taking the field tonight is a sign of progress on both fronts, so joint practices and the team’s second preseason game in Minnesota should offer some more answers.

Diamondbacks 10, Atlanta 3: Nolan and the Hologram
ATLANTA, GA - AUGUST 15: Nolan Arenado #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks looks on after hitting a solo home run in the seventh inning during the game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on Saturday, August 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Brett Davis/MLB Photos via Getty Images) | MLB Photos via Getty Images I hope you all will forgive me for spending a portion of my Saturday mornings sorting through various somewhat bleak baseball things in preparation for the coming recap. For instance, today I found myself roaming around looking at the recent game logs for Harrison Grant Holmes and comparing them those of Eduardo Rodriguez (Holmes had a better run recently, at least until today), and then looking at how the Braves as a team hit versus left-handed pitching (10th in the majors, as opposed to 8th vs. right-handers). The Diamondbacks, incidentally, are 2nd in the majors facing lefties, at least in terms of OPS, which was nice to see. But Grant Holmes is not a lefty, so I scrolled down to see how we do against righties, and discovered the rather depressing fact that we rank 29th in the majors in OPS against right-handed pitching. I tend to try to look for something interesting that I could touch on and organize my thinking around, in case a Saturday game goes badly for us, as it feels like they often do.Anyway. As it turns out, I didn’t really need to, though it certainly didn’t look like it was going to be that way in the early going. Holmes caught leadoff man Lars Nootbaar looking to start off the game, then got Corbin Carroll to pop out on the infield and Geraldo Perdomo to strike out swinging on three pitches to make short work of the Snakes in the top of the first. Everyone’s favorite hologram then came on for the bottom of the frame and gave up hits to the first three batters he faced: a home run to absolutely straightaway center field to Ronald Acuña, Jr., followed by a double to Drake Baldwin and a maddening bloop single just behind shortstop that fell in and advanced Baldwin to third. ERod finally recorded his first out on an Ozzie Albies pop fly to shallow right, but Baldwin crossed the plate on a grounder to second. That wound up being all the damage done, but we were already in a hole and Rodriguez had already thrown 24 pitches. 2-0 AtlantaGiven our dismal 0 for 14 performance last night with runners in scoring position, and given how easily Holmes had disposed of the top of our lineup in the top of the first, it seemed like we were in a very deep hole. But the bottom two thirds of the lineup, perhaps shamed by yesterday’s aforementioned dismal performance, were having none of it today. Gabriel Moreno drewa five-pitch walk to lead things off, and was promptly advanced to third by a Max Kepler double into the alley in right center that rolled to the wall. Nolan Arenado grounded out slowly to third, allowing Moreno to score. Then Tim Tawa grounded a single to left, driving in Kepler and tying things back up. But we weren’t done! Ildemaro Vargas, starting at second today due to Ketel Marte’s gimpy knee, rolled over to second for the second out, but then Ryan Waldschmidt hit an opposite field liner to right that dropped for a single and scored Tawa from second. 3-2 DBACKSAnd it was basically off to the races after that. ERod surrendered a leadoff double to Atlanta left fielder Lane Thomas to start the bottom of the second, but then sat down the next three batters to leave Thomas stranded there and put up a very reassuring zero. Corbin Carroll led off the top of the third with a double to right. Perdomo launched a fly ball to deep center that allowed Corbin to tag and take third. Moreno then doubled off the wall in right center, plating Carroll. Kepler popped out the infield, which was unfortunate and frustrating, marking as it did the second out of the inning, but Nolan Arenado came to the plate for the second time in two innings and launched the third pitch he saw from Holmes into the seats in left center field:View LinkTim Tawa flied out to end things, but Nolan’s 29th of the season had extended the lead substantially. 6-2 DBACKSThings kind of cooled down after that for both teams, at least for awhile. Holmes walked Nootbaar and Carroll on five pitches apiece with two outs in the top of the fourth, which earned him an early end to his night, but the Braves bullpen got involved and put up three straight zeros in the fourth, fifth, and sixth. Eduardo Rodriguez, however, had settled down nicely, and was doing the same. He retired Altanta in order in the third and fourth, pitched around a two-out Acuña single that just trickled in and out of the glove of a diving Perdomo, and then recorded a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth to end his night on a very satisfactory note. But our offense still wasn’t done. In fact, Arenado himself wasn’t done. He stepped to the plate with two outs in the seventh against Atlanta lefty Brent Suter and launched his 20th home run of the year to pretty much the same place that he’d deposited his 19th:View LinkSo that was fun. 7-2 DBACKSThe game was mostly in the bag at this point, with Jonathan Loaisiga and Kevin Ginkel each pitching a pristine inning in relief, while the Braves relievers continued to toil along haplessly. Corbin Carroll tripled with off the wall in right with two outs in the eighth, but wasn’t able to score. In the top of the ninth, Moreno singled to lead things off, Arenado drew a one-out walk, and then with two outs Ildemaro Vargas, who’d been quiet all evening up to this point, sent a third souvenir over the wall in left to pad things a little more. 10-2 DBACKSWith an eight run lead, Torey Lovullo opted to go with Philip Abner, an admittedly low-leverage arm, out of the bullpen for the final three outs, and Abner got it done, though he did cough up one more run thanks to a Matt Olson leadoff double and then a couple of infield groundouts that allowed Olson to come around and score. But no harm done, and we had a very emphatic second win of the series! 10-3 DBACKSWin Probability Added, courtesy of FanGraphsHeroes: Nolan Arenado (4 AB, 2 H, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 HR, 1 BB, +13% WPA), Cabriel Moreno (4 AB, 3 H, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, +11% WPA)Zeros: None! Lars Nootbaar, Geraldo Perdomo, and Ildemaro Vargas each contributed negative WPA, but at ultimately negligible levels. Everyone played real good ball tonight! Good job, Snakes! It wound up being a nice and well-populated Gameday Thread tonight, with 289 comments at time of writing. Our Fearless Leader got the most rec’s for his observation regarding how helpful it might be for tomorrow to chew through some more of Atlanta’s bullpen, but I’m giving today’s Comment of the Game to piratedan for this early comment that aptly captures the whiplash many of us felt seeing the offense go off like this less than 24 hours after last night’s Dismal Performance (TM):Didn’t have this in my bingo card going into last night’s game, but I hope you can join us tomorrow as we go for the three-game sweep against the runaway leaders in the NL East! Michael Soroka goes for us, Bryce Elder goes for Atlanta. Elder got lit up last time out with 7 earned runs allowed to the lowly Mets on August 10, so with any luck we can make his month of August even worse. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AZ time, TheRealRamona will have the guest recap, so we hope to see you with all of your favorite morning baseball snacks tomorrow as we go for the sweep! As always, thanks for reading, and as always, go Diamondbacks!

Ohio State kicker makes Lou Groza preseason watch list for 2026
The Ohio State kicking game has been the brunt of jokes over the last few seasons because of some clutch misses, but the OSU coaching staff is hoping that comes to an end after dipping into the transfer portal to land former Baylor placekicker Connor Hawkins. And while it doesn't mean anything about how things will ultimately go on the field, Hawkins was one of the names appearing on the Lou Groza preseason watch list when it was unveiled last week.Originally out of Liberty Hill, Texas, Hawkins spent the last two years at Baylor, but was redshirted after very limited action in 2024. Last season, Hawkins made 18-of-22 field goals (81.8%) and was successful in all 37 extra point attempts. What might be news to Buckeye fans is the fact that his longest was a 54-yarder, something OSU hasn't seen in a long, long time. He led the Big 12 in field goal percentage last season. The Lou Groza Award has been around since 1992 and is awarded to the top college football placekicker annually by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. The award is named after former OSU and Cleveland Browns kicker Lou Groza. Mike Nugent is the only Ohio State player to have won the award, and that occurred back in 2004 when Nugent was a consensus All-American.Recognition for one of college football’s top kickers. @connor_hawk1ns is on the Lou Groza Award Watch List. pic.twitter.com/l7DW76PxjD— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) August 7, 2026These watch lists can -- and will -- change throughout the college football season, with the winner being announced on December 11 as part of ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show.Contact/Follow us @BuckeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Ohio State news, notes, and opinion. Donald flies Welsh flag in Hundred final at Lord's
Aneurin Donald's strike rate of 225 topped The Hundred table of regular batters during the group stages [Rex Features]Welsh Fire might not be involved in the Hundred final on Sunday at Lord's but there is set to be a Welsh batter.Aneurin Donald will take his place in the top order of the Nottingham-based Trent Rockets when they face Manchester Superchargers this evening (18:15 BST).The 29-year-old from Gorseinon near Swansea started his career with Glamorgan but left in 2018 and is now at Derbyshire."I am massively proud and passionate of my heritage and Welsh cricket," said Donald."I left Glamorgan a long time ago but love to keep a track of Welsh cricket even if I'm doing it with a Trent Rockets shirt on."And Donald is quick to remind people it is the England and Wales Cricket Board. "I'm always correcting people that I'm playing as a Welshman, not an Englishman, and it's something I'll always push."Glamorgan and Wales have a special place in my heart and there'll always be that attachment to Welsh cricket."I'm looking forward to hopefully flying the flag at Lord's and getting a trophy."Remarkable strike rate leads to Hundred breakthroughAneurin Donald first joined Derbyshire on loan in 2023 before making the move permanent [Rex Features]Donald is hoping to be part of a successful Trent Rockets side in front of a capacity crowd in London."It's going to be exciting to roll out in Lord's in front of a full crowd in a final," he said."Lifting a trophy would be a huge moment. For myself and my career, it'd be up there. "I want to try and soak the day in, because they come and go quickly and careers are short."Donald was picked up in the auction by Trent Rockets and experienced a successful T20 Blast campaign with Derbyshire. He was the sixth highest runs scorer with 489 in the tournament, but it was his astonishing strike of 230 that stood out."It's an obvious strength of mine, and this format is compressed even more," said Donald."It's more important you're efficient with your balls and that's something that seems to have worked over the past few years."The format is different for the players, probably more so than people realise because it is so much faster."After being forced to wait his chance with the Rockets' international line-up, Donald came in for injured England batter Tom Banton and kept up that strike rate when Rockets topped the table."I've been fortunate enough to get a chance, which is difficult with these teams," said Donald."To be able to have played a small part in this and feel I've finally put my stamp at this level has been important."I'm lucky to have landed at Trent Rockets, it's an unbelievable place to be involved."It is tough to get in the side and hold a spot down, but when you get a chance you're desperate to take it with both hands."As you go up the levels, you've got to take opportunities you get."I feel like I've been around the block a bit. I'm probably in the best position to kind of cope with that and be ready for my chance."Donald knows he is in his position because of his county career."I love Derbyshire and it's nice to feel settled, they've been amazing since I moved there," said Donald."My game has gone from strength to strength and I've got a lot to thank Mickey Arthur (director of cricket) and the club for."I feel so valued. Getting the opportunity to captain in white ball cricket is a massive feather in my cap and something I always wanted to do."All you need to know about the 2026 Hundred finalsWhat next for Welsh Fire? The Hundred 2026 tables, top run-scorers & wicket-takersInternational ambitions in a franchise cricket worldIn 2017, Aneurin Donald equalled Ravi Shastri's record for Glamorgan's fastest double hundred in first-class cricket off just 123 balls, eventually scoring 234 off 136 balls [Getty Images]Donald was a Glamorgan prodigy who seemed destined for senior international honours when playing for England Under-19s.That never quite materialised, but a decade on Donald has not given up hopes of a call-up in white-ball cricket. "The landscape's changed since I made my first-class debut," said Donald."You now have franchise cricket and these opportunities around the world to play in front of massive crowds on the biggest stage with the best players and that's a massive draw."Any county cricketer who comes through the system says Test cricket is the pinnacle and wanting to get a cap for England is definitely up there."I'm not sure I could sit here with a straight face and say I'm probably in the mix to do it in red ball."However this [Hundred] platform, and certainly white-ball cricket, I'm excited to see where it takes me."After The Hundred Donald will play in a 10-over league in Canada after being involved in that format in Abu Dhabi last year.He hopes to be involved in lucrative 20-over tournaments in UAE, Australia, South Africa and Pakistan, while the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the holy grail for franchise cricketers."I've always felt I've had an ability to do it at franchise level and levels above, and it's nice to feel I'm showing that now," said Donald."Hopefully a few doors will start to open, certainly on the franchise circuit, and then you never know with the England white ball stuff."All I can do is keep knocking at the door and, most importantly, performing on every stage and in every opportunity I get."Soaring heat, falling crowds - The Hundred's peculiar summer'The Hundred and county cricket can co-exist'Given his qualities, it is no surprise Donald is a big supporter of the Hundred concept which has divided cricket fans."It is safe to say the standard has gone up this year, especially with the overseas players we have," said Donald."Guys who play in leagues around the world can't speak highly enough of The Hundred."You're playing with the best players in the world in front of massive crowds on TV."As a professional sportsman, it feels like the pinnacle right now in terms of English T20, or close to T20."Donald also believes it has succeeded off the field."The Hundred has achieved a lot of what it's set out to be," he said."It's been obvious to see how many families and kids are in grounds throughout the school holidays. "The product is great entertainment, although it's not perfect."Donald hopes The Hundred can continue to co-exist alongside the T20 Blast and the 50-over One Day Cup."The Hundred is here to stay and hopefully supporting the county game," he said."While the Blast has probably had a little bit of heat over the last few years, it's a great competition with good overseas players and teams."It's a good proving ground, a great product itself which is well followed and well organised."The Hundred is a separate entity but the Blast and Metro-Bank [One Day Cup] competitions are good and county cricket is brilliant."There is a good will there where the Hundred can coexist and benefit the other domestic tournaments."A run out to wound the egoOne thing Donald will be doing on Sunday is committing to his running between the wickets.Earlier this month, he was in supreme form with 23 from 10 balls when he was inexplicably run out against MI London after failing to ground his bat."I pride myself as a relatively switched-on bloke, so to have done that has hurt my ego," said Donald, who was relieved the Rockets won by six wickets."This is probably a good place to get on record my apology. "Not only do I apologise to Pete Moores and Sam Billings (Trent Rockets head coach and captain), I apologise to all my coaches from under nines and all the way through, because that's the first rule, everyone knows to run your bat in. "Doing that on television in a big game, when I was in good form, was pretty dumb and I have learned my lesson. "I've seen a few clips of that online, it's tough to get rid of, and everyone since has been telling me not to forget to run my bat in this weekend."So that'll be first on my list. You might see me diving into the crease on Sunday!"Donald will be hoping that will not be necessary at the home of cricket where he will aim to provide the Welsh firepower for Trent Rockets.Get cricket news sent straight to your phone

Inside Missouri State football's fall camp scrimmage
SPRINGFIELD — Long passes and big hits filled Plaster Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 15.Missouri State hosted a full speed scrimmage with many players showcasing their talents, though other areas need improvement before the first game of the season. Here are some takeaways from the Bears' scrimmage.Skyler Locklear takes majority of quarterback snapsSkyler Locklear is one of two quarterbacks competing for the starting job. Locklear is a fifth-year senior transfer from UTEP. He played the most snaps and played primarily with the No. 1 roster against the No. 1 defense for Missouri State throughout the scrimmage. Across the practice, Locklear went 13-for-21 passing. The scrimmage included drives starting inside his own 5-yard line, 25-yard line, red zone, along with two-minute offensive drills. Missouri State football: Running back Ramone Green Jr. eyes big yearDuring the two-minute offense, Locklear threw a perfectly placed ball on the sidelines for a 30-yard gain to wide receiver Mekhi Miller. Locklear’s other big play was a 55-yard pass to star wideout Jmariyae Robinson, whose feet did most of the yardage gain. But Locklear's on-time delivery was key. “I think our guys rally around him and believe in him,” Woods said. “You can see why he’s been a starter in certain times and he’s won some games.”While Locklear did have some big plays, he struggled with consistency. When the ball was set inside the two-yard line, Missouri State rarely earned a first down. The Bears defense was on the mark. “He’s still a little careless with the ball,” Woods said. “He can be impatient in the pocket on occasion, but we move the ball when he is in the game.”Injuries to key players affect scrimmageHenry Belin IV is the other quarterback competing with Locklear for the starting role. Belin is a fifth-year transfer from Duke and played a majority of the scrimmage with the second unit. Unofficially, Belin went 3-for-6 across the scrimmage. He did not play the final 45 minutes of the event, which included red zone and two-minute offense drills. “Henry has been battling a little bit of shoulder soreness,” Woods said. “We need to see where that is at. What does that look like in the short term future, long term future. That will impact our decision.”Missouri State football: Inside J.J. O'Neal's decision to return to the Bears for final seasonAnother key absence during the scrimmage was running back Breezy Dubar. The Boise State transfer has been at the top of the depth chart throughout camp. In his place, Nixa native Ramone Green Jr. played alongside Locklear. “He (Dubar) has been nursing some soreness and some things,” Woods said. “We wanted to make sure that we were taking care of him.”Special teams success highlighted by Yousef ObeidDuring the second half of the scrimmage, Missouri State’s defense was humming. Deflections and tackles for loss were commonplace, with players like linebacker Jared Lloyd and Iowa State defensive end transfer Markell Chapman making an impact. Thanks to the defensive stops, special teams were utilized often. Starting kicker Yusef Obeid was on the mark throughout. He hit field goals of 41 and 44 yards with ease. During the two-minute drill, Obeid nailed a 57-yard field goal to give the offense the win. Obeid was unable to go perfect throughout the scrimmage. Logan-Rogersville’s J.J. O’Neal was able to fight through the line and block one of the kicks. Michael Osei-Bonsu’s early role with the team Fan favorite Michael Osei-Bonsu took another step forward in his football career. The basketball star-turned-first-year football player made an impact as a third-team defensive end. He was also a starter during field goals, playing as the team’s right tackle. “We have a developmental plan all the way through November,” Woods said. “Guys like Mike Osei-Bonsu, not ready to be an every down player right now. But, he very well could be in a month and a half.”Liam Keating covers high school sports and Missouri State athletics for The Springfield News-Leader. Our updated 53-man roster projection for the Bengals
The 2026 Cincinnati Bengals now have a game's worth of film to help them arrive at their 53-man roster, which feels a lot closer after preseason game No. 1.The Bengals will have to get the roster down to 53 players by Sunday, Aug. 30 ahead of their Sept. 13 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The organization needs film and information to make its personnel decisions, and plenty was learned during the 16-6 win Aug. 13 against the Detroit Lions at Paycor Stadium.Bengals Lions Dexter Lawrence What Dexter Lawrence gleaned from first snaps in Bengals stripesBengals Dohnte Meyers Bengals' Dohnte Meyers drove from Atlanta to practice with Joe BurrowThe game was played throughout a steady rain for more than a quarter, and combined with the first two weeks of training camp, a clearer picture emerges of the Bengals' personnel. Here are our updated 53-man roster projections after the Lions game: Bengals quarterbacks (2)Joe Burrow, Joe Flacco.Analysis: The Bengals are obviously set at quarterback, so here's the stat lines from the preseason opener against the Lions: Burrow went 5-for-6 for 39 yards. Flacco went 5-for-8 for 51 yards and a touchdown. He was also credited with a fumble on an errant snap that eventually ended his first series of two on the night. Bengals running backs (3)Chase Brown, Samaje Perine, Tahj Brooks.Analysis: Our top-three projected running backs combined for 10 carries against the Lions. That, combined with what we've seen in training camp, has us keeping our top three intact.Bengals wide receivers (6)Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Andrei Iosivas, Colbie Young, Charlie Jones, Mitchell Tinsley. Analysis: We have Colbie Young at No. 4 after two weeks of camp, plus his preseason debut in which he was targeted a team-high four times with two catches for a team-high 28 yards. Interestingly, established No. 3 receiver Andrei Iosivas was targeted four times and made two catches for 20 yards. That's interesting because some observers think Young could be in a position to challenge Iosivas for the No. 3 receiver designation. Whether that competition is real or imagined, both players and the entire offense can benefit from Young and Iosivas pushing one another.Bengals tight ends (4)Mike Gesicki, Drew Sample, Erick All Jr., Tanner Hudson.Analysis: Keep an eye out for Texas product and seventh-round draft pick Jack Endries. Against the Lions, he obviously did enough to have his number called while backup quarterback Joe Flacco was on the field. Then, Endries grabbed himself a catch-and-run touchdown.Bengals offensive line (9)Orlando Brown Jr., Dylan Fairchild, Ted Karras, Dalton Risner, Amarius Mims, Cody Ford, Jalen Rivers, Brian Parker II, Connor Lew.Analysis: Our projections for the offensive line room haven't changed.Bengals defensive line (11)Dexter Lawrence, Jonathan Allen, B.J. Hill, Boye Mafe, Myles Murphy, T.J. Slaton Jr., Shemar Stewart, Cashius Howell, Kris Jenkins Jr., Cedric Johnson, Landon Robinson.Analysis: McKinnley Jackson could end up being the odd man out on the d-line, and that's what we project will happen as things stand. Jackson got some first-team snaps against the Lions, turning in two tackles. Bengals linebackers (5)Barrett Carter, Demetrius Knight Jr., Oren Burks, Shaka Heyward, Joe Giles-Harris.Analysis: We know who the Bengals want to be the starters (Carter and Knight) and we didn't see enough to make a shakeup. Bengals cornerbacks (6)DJ Turner II, Dax Hill, Jalen Davis, Tacario Davis, Josh Newton, Bralyn Lux.Analysis: No changes to our projected cornerback room. Bengals safeties (4)Bryan Cook, Kyle Dugger, Jordan Battle, PJ Jules.Analysis: Kyle Dugger was one of the Bengals' offseason free-agent additions, and he blew up the Lions' first play from scrimmage in the game. Battle, a veteran, had an interception basically fall into his hands later on that Lions drive.Bengals specialists (3)K Evan McPherson P Ryan RehkowLS William WagnerAnalysis: Nothing came close to changing for our projections of this group. The field goal operation went smoothly in the rain as Evan McPherson connected on a 56-yard field goal. Punter Ryan Rehkow banged his first three punts for an average of about 52 yards, placing two inside Detroit's 20-yard line. Absolute vise grip from the champion. Nice knee from Makhachev as Garry works to stand. Makhachev powers Garry to the fence.Makhachev just leaning on Garry, firing knees into his hip. Not much damage to speak of, but Garry is fully in defense mode. “F*ck you, Garry” chants ringing out through Xfinity Mobile Arena. Makhachev stuck to him like glue.Still little significant offense, but that’s a round in the books for Makhachev.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Makhachev.Round 2Garry not hesitating to throw kicks from distance. Makes sense, he got taken down being conservative in the first round so maybe take a few more risks. Little output from both fighters as they size each other up. There’s a body kick for Garry. Looks like there might have been a kick below the belt, Makhachev doesn’t react, but Garry pauses to apologize.Makhachev gets a hold of Garry, but Garry forces the action to the cage while sneaking in body shots. They separate and Makhachev lands a punch and then a MASSIVE head kick. Garry is dropped. He’s back up fast, but he looks wobbly. Makhachev closes the distance and throws Garry. The champion in complete control with two minutes left in Round 2.This might be giving Garry time to recover, but he’s being smothered. Garry trying to work his way up, Makhachev with relentless pressure, just draining that gas tank.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Makhachev. Overall, 20-18 Makhachev.Round 3Garry trying to set up his offense with kicks but there’s been little follow-up and Makhachev has been the more dangerous fighter in close. Garry at least managing to keep the champion at bay this round, but not sure how he expects to win throwing almost nothing. Then again, not much from Makhachev right now either.Almost on cue, Makhachev dives in for a leg and there’s the takedown. Garry not fully down and he manages to reverse position, stand, and land a few strikes. Impressive sequence for the challenger. Garry lands a head kick and that got Makhachev’s attention. Oblique kick scores for Garry, he’s been working to establish that. Round to the challenger, perhaps.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Garry. Overall, 29-28 Makhachev.Round 4Garry again attacks the oblique. Hard body kick by Garry, he’s scoring points. Makhachev with a single leg, Garry countering well and they’re scrambling. Makhachev relentless with his wrestling and he gets the takedown, Garry already working to get up. The champion wants to stay heavy, but Garry’s size is helping him to find an angle to power up.Garry with short shots to the body. This is a tough round to score. Makhachev with a high-crotch lift and he dumps Garry, with little impact, though. An argument could be made Garry has done more damage, minimal as it is.Big effort from Makhachev to score another takedown, but Garry is right back up. I think he’s winning this round.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Garry. Overall, 38-38.Round 5Garry working to cut off the cage. Makhachev with a couple of punches to back Garry off, but Garry catches him with a counter right. Straight right scores for Garry. Takedown from Makhachev, not much behind it but he initiates a scramble and Garry is right back up. They’re back in a familiar struggle against the fence.Clean takedown for Makhachev and he has the back. Garry not getting back up easily this time. Less than half a round to go and Makhachev is in control. No answer for Garry right now with Makhachev stuck to his back, landing short strikes, and vaguely threatening a choke. Love it or hate it, this is winning.MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Makhachev. Overall, 48-47 Makhachev.

Mackenzie Dern wins 115-pound title defense at UFC 330; Makhachev goes for record win streak
Mackenzie Dern, top, battles Gillian Robertson in a women's strawweight title fight at the UFC 330 mixed martial arts event Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Derik Hamilton)2026-08-16T03:35:33Z PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Mackenzie Dern successfully defended the 115-pound championship in her first title defense with a unanimous decision victory over Gillian Robertson in the first of two championship fights on Saturday night at UFC 330.Dern (17-5) won the vacant strawweight belt in her last fight at UFC 321 and won a lopsided and lackluster first defense against Robertson.Dern won 49-46 on two scorecards and 48-47 on the third.“I wanted to get the submission with Gillian,” Dern said. “I definitely wanted to submit her. That was the goal.”Dern nearly made Robertson (17-9) tap in the first round with a choke hold that about turned the challenger’s face as pinkish-red as her braided hair. Dern might have won the bout had it stretched even another 30 seconds, but Robertson was saved by the bell.Too bad the fight didn’t end there. The next four rounds were relatively uneventful, and the title match slowed to a near complete stop as they mostly locked up on the canvas with barely a strike thrown. Dern’s 7-year-old daughter peered her head over the barricade from her front row seat and shouted encouragement each time mom got close to her side of the cage. The little girl could be heard well over a rowdy crowd that had about been lulled into passiveness — and eventually, boos in the fifth round — in the humdrum title fight. The next one should be a banger. Islam Makhachev can set the UFC record for most consecutive wins with 17 if the 170-pound champion defeats Ian Machado Garry in the main event.Makhachev is tied with UFC Hall of Famer Anderson Silva with 16 straight victories. Makhachev (28-1) has not lost since UFC 192 in 2015, and he won the welterweight crown in his first attempt when he beat Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in November 2025. Read More Edson Barboza left his fight gloves on the mat and choked back tears as he retired following a lightweight loss on the main card to Esteben Ribovics. The 40-year-old Barboza received a standing ovation and was flanked by his family as he officially called it quits after an MMA career that began in 2009. He made his UFC debut a year later and won multiple Fight of the Night honors. He lost the last four fights of his career. “Every single fight, I promise I did my best,” Barboza said from inside the cage.Barboza dropped to his knees and bowed his head as he lay down his gloves and was consoled by UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer as he made the final walk back to the locker room.UFC held only its third numbered card in Philadelphia and first fight event overall in the city since 2019.UFC 101 was held in August 2009, and UFC 133 was in August 2011. Philly fight fans were in the mood to make up for lost time and about packed the arena and were wild for the punishing action the preliminary fights delivered hours before the main card was set to start. It’s a perfect fit for a city that loves their bullies. The fans got an early reward when 39-year-old Philly fighter Jeremiah Wells —- who was booed on his walkout — won via submission on the card’s opening night and won over the inhospitable fans.Tresean Gore won his middleweight fight, but lost his teeth in a unanimous decision victory over Vecente Luque. Gore took a flying knee to his mouth and lost most of his bottom front teeth. They littered the cage and the fight official picked at least one up with his gloved hand. Gore pulled down his lower lip to show the bloody results as he talked to fight announcer Joe Rogan.Charles Johnson celebrated his submission victory by leading the crowd in an off-key rendition of “Fly, Eagles. Fly.” It helps to pander. He walked out of the cage to a big ovation.___AP MMA: https://apnews.com/hub/mixed-martial-arts DAN GELSTON Gelston is an an Associated Press sports writer covering major college and pro sports in Philadelphia, including the 76ers, Flyers, Eagles, Phillies and Villanova. twitter mailto
