SPORTS.YAHOO.COM49ers News: Mike Evans practices againSANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 13: Romello Height #94 of the San Francisco 49ers rushes pass Dan Moore Jr. #75 of the Tennessee Titans in the first half at Levi's Stadium on August 13, 2026 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) | Getty Images Can the 49ers depend on rookie WR De’Zhaun Stribling?“The team has long shied away from plugging any of its young wideouts into one position, instead asking them to learn all three spots (F, X or Z) before deciding where to put them. That workload can faze some players, but coaches and teammates have said Stribling isn’t bothered. The strong impression he left on the team was a result of the routine Stribling developed after the offseason program. Along with the studying film each day, he would say every playcall out loud or have someone recite it to him. Then, he would write it down or draw the play out so he could visualize it.Stribling would go through the playbook repeatedly, occasionally asking his mother or his girlfriend to quiz him or call out plays. He even joined fellow wideout Jordan Watkins for throwing sessions with Purdy and Jones in Nashville prior to training camp.”The Good and Not So Good from Day 12 of 49ers Camp: The Purdy-Evans Connection Needs Work“Give Samuel credit — he’s in the best shape possible and he shows every day, as opposed to lots of other veterans on the team. He’s one of the iron mans of camp so far, which is incredible….[Jack Jones] injured his hand early on Thursday night against the Titans, but practiced today and recovered a fumble. He takes the ball away from the offense seemingly every other practice, but his coverage isn’t exactly sticky. He’s an enigma.Mike Evans returns to 49ers practice as left guard competition heats up“Wide receiver Jacob Cowing, out since Aug. 5 with a hip flexor injury, returned to practice. He took a handoff on a running play, then dropped a pass from Jones. Later, he made a very nice grab of a Jones pass along the right sideline.”49ers DC Raheem Morris evaluates young players after preseason opener“San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris spoke with reporters after Saturday’s training camp practice. Here’s everything he had to say.”49ers’ Gracen Halton making an impression with both burst and outburst at camp (paywall)“After Halton’s first win in one-on-one drills earlier this month, 49ers tackle Trent Williams strolled over to the defensive line’s section to offer a handshake and encouragement. Both are Oklahoma products who met three years ago when Williams was on the sideline for a Sooners game, though Halton doubts the veteran tackle remembers the encounter.“I was one of the guys that said what’s up to him,” Halton said. “I was dang starstruck.”…Halton feels he’s making up for lost time.He hyperextended his knee on the first day of training camp and missed the initial week of practice. He didn’t exactly ease his way back into the mix when he returned, making plays in both one-on-one and 11-on-11 situations and letting everyone know about it.“That’s what I like to do,” he said. “I imagine myself as a lion going out to get the gazelle. So when I do those one-on-ones, my mindset is, I’m going off to hunt.”49ers change up their left guard rotation; Mike Evans and Jacob Cowing return“After Thursday’s game, Kyle Shanahan said this about Jones: “We felt he fit into our scheme and was a guy that we were able to get that we think can compete for that starting job, and if not, he can have some good depth for us.”That almost sounds like they want Willis or Colby to be the guy for the job. In the same breath, this shouldn’t be viewed as a demotion for Jones, who played in his first live game since 2024 fewer than 48 hours ago. The team has to manage Jones’ inevitable soreness. After practice, Trent Williams said it’s a three-man race and “may the best man win.” He believes Willis has a “high ceiling and a lot of potential.”0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 75 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMourinho personally calls €60m-rated Italian defender but Real Madrid block transfer request – reportMourinho personally calls €60m-rated Italian defender but Real Madrid block transfer request – reportJose Mourinho wants Alessandro Bastoni at Real Madrid, but convincing the club to make another major investment in defence could prove more difficult than convincing the Inter Milan defender himself.According to journalist Ruben Martin, Mourinho has personally spoken with Bastoni and views the Italian international as an ideal addition to his squad. It is said that the Real Madrid manager reportedly sees the need for another centre-back as more urgent than strengthening the midfield. That stance is largely driven by the uncertainty surrounding Eder Militao’s recovery and concerns over Antonio Rudiger’s current level. This is why Mourinho wants another high-quality defender he can rely on immediately, and Bastoni’s name has moved to the top of his thinking. However, there appears to be a difference between Mourinho identifying his preferred signing and Real Madrid being prepared to pay for him.The club has already invested heavily in strengthening their defensive options, and the prospect of another expensive arrival is facing resistance from within the Santiago Bernabeu hierarchy.Mourinho has already made contact with BastoniMourinho made direct contact with Bastoni. (Photo by Yu Chun Christopher Wong/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images)As per the journalist. Mourinho has taken a personal interest in the possibility of bringing Bastoni to Spain and has already spoken directly with the Inter Milan player to understand his situation.Real Madrid also made an informal approach to Inter during the World Cup, although the Italian club refused to put a starting price for the negotiations to begin.Instead, Inter referred to the €75 million figure previously communicated to Barcelona and made it clear that they would not consider a sale below €60 million, creating a difficult negotiation for Real Madrid.Bastoni is not a player Inter appear willing to lose cheaply, and Mourinho’s interest does not change the financial reality of the situation. Hence, any deal would require another substantial outlay from a club that has already committed significant money to its defence. The question is therefore not whether Mourinho rates Bastoni, as he clearly does.Bastoni is the player Mourinho prefers. (Photo by Janelle St Pierre/Getty Images)The real question is whether Real Madrid believe the current situation justifies another investment of at least €60 million.Real Madrid have spent heavily on their defenceReal Madrid have already invested in defenders such as Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella, and Florentino Perez believes the club has done enough business in that area of the pitch. From the club’s perspective, the defensive line has already been addressed, but Mourinho sees it differently. The Portuguese manager remains concerned about how quickly Militao can return to his best after his injury, while Rudiger’s form has also left him wanting another reliable option at the heart of the defence. But Real Madrid have informed their manager that another defender will not arrive under normal circumstances.A move could only become realistic if an unexpected departure creates space in the squad and the budget, or if a serious injury forces the club to reassess its plans.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 58 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMThe Weekly Bobbins: An Indefensible League OpenerAs season-openers go, this is one that will be remembered, but not fondly. Despite Jack Marriott’s sublime first-half hat-trick, the game was soured by some horrific defending that can’t be defended. The perpetrator in chief was Jeriel Dorsett, the defender that doesn’t enjoy defending. It’s fine to consider him a bit of a utility defender, as he can play at centre-back, where he’s passable, at best. But at left-back, it seems he hasn’t learned one iota about positional sense, engagement or what the best thing to do is at any given moment. It’s akin to him waking up every morning finding out he’s got to play in a position he’s never played in before, and making a hash of it every single time.Further to this are the knock-on effects of his consistently inconsistent play. Everyone else around him becomes nervous as to what he’s going to do, or, more to the point, not going to do. It causes disruption, because he can’t be trusted.“While this unit is in its infancy, we most certainly need a big, big upgrade at left-back”A back four needs to be solid, dependable and united. As a unit, we looked woefully disjointed, and it wasn’t only the defence, as we’ll get to. Yes, it’s only game one. Yes, it’s a marathon and not a sprint, but damn, there’s a lot of work to do.Udoka Godwin-Malife (or just Dokes) and Benn Ward were fine. Dokes was a bit quieter than I’d expected, but pretty much error-free until Luton Town’s fourth. Ward seemed to be putting out fires pretty well, but Paudie O’Connor is a worry.A few times he did manage to bail himself out of a tight spot, but his lack of pace is there for all to see. Balls over the top are always going to be a bit of an issue, but for O’Connor it’s like watching a glacier shift in real time.Overall, while this unit is in its infancy, we most certainly need a big, big upgrade at left-back. I would prefer Randell Williams or even Paddy Lane to take a berth there, rather than watch Dorsett flounder so badly week in, week out until Haydon Roberts is fit again, and who knows when that will be?They all need to find confidence in each other, back each other up when required, learn each other’s strengths and deficiencies. But on this showing they were far from composed or complete.Captain material? Then there’s the next big issue, in my opinion, and it will probably divide many. Lewis Wing is not captain material. There, I said it.There’s a school of thought that would suggest there’s a mental disconnect in the entire squad. We saw it clearly in the huge drop-off at the end of last season, and we saw it again against Luton. When we’re scoring goals and all is good in the world, we’re riding high and floating on rarefied air. From the first-half showing we looked like a team that could actually be easy on the eye and effective. But from the moment Luton scored their second goal, Reading’s mental fragility cracked like some cheap china. There was little reaction from the players beyond a bit of finger pointing and obligatory clapping of hands. Where’s the fight? Where’s the spirit?Chiefly, I believe this is because the captaincy is in the wrong hands. Wing is undoubtedly one of the finest players we’ve had in the hoops over the last few years. He has rescued the side and won games all on his own. That much is a given and can’t be underestimated. But – and it’s a huge, huge but – he’s a luxury player, and luxury players in my eyes should not be captains. It’s fine to want to build your team around him, that’s understandable, but as we saw, once Luton decided to flood the midfield and overrun Andy Rinomhota and Wing, we had no counter-punch.As a midfield pairing, Wing is the weak link. He’s a great interceptor of the ball, as his stats will attest, but he’s not quick enough or strong enough to be in a two.Neither he nor Rino had good games against Luton. Both were chasing shadows in the second half. Throughout they didn’t have support from Josh Stokes – who struggled to know where to be – or from Randell Williams, his replacement. But to return to Wing, I feel his captaincy style is not what we need, if he has a style at all. He’s not demonstrative, he’s not a leader of men, and his quiet disposition mirrors itself in the rest of the team when the chips are down. The team looks dejected because he is too.He doesn’t even attempt to lift the team when we concede. He’s invisible. Yes, there should be individual responsibility, it’s not all on the captain. But if he’s not giving the players even a mild ticking-off, then what is his captaincy for? Just by being the best player at one point? It’s not enough. The problem is the captaincy is almost certainly not going to be given to someone else. Not unless we bring in a natural born leader who commands respect, and it’s just not who we’re in the market for. We’re stuck with this leaderless leader who can lead by example but not by anything anyone else can replicate. That’s a focal point, not a figurehead. An unbalanced side? While we can appreciate what Leam Richardson is trying to morph the team into, it’s now switched from being too negative into something akin to kamikaze.Having two out-and-out wingers with pace who want to take on full-backs is absolutely fine, and what we’ve craved for so long, but there has to be stability behind them. The midfield two will be overrun without support, and Wing isn’t strong or mobile enough to contain attacks. Stokes’ role appeared to be to support Marriott, not to drop into midfield. He also didn’t look fit enough yet, but that’s by the by.Anyone who’s ever played a bit of Football Manager will know this set-up is bonkers. Forget the defence for a moment. We’ve got a box-to-box midfielder and a deep-lying playmaker in midfield. Ahead of them are an attacking midfielder, two wingers and a striker. Where’s the protection for the already shaky-enough defence? There’s symmetry in the formation, granted, but the balance is weighted far too much towards attack now. As we saw against Luton, we can counter-punch to great effect, but over the course of 90-odd minutes we’ll get outlasted by opposition who can flood the weaker areas and dominate from there. In short, everyone knows we need more bodies – and better bodies at that – in key positions. We’ve got a gem in Marriott, but the deficiencies are crystal clear. One game in and the new style is appreciated but the old failings are still glaringly bright.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 27 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM“Some Things He Could Have Done Better”: John Harbaugh Gives Honest Opinion on Odell Beckham Jr.’s Preseason Start With GiantsJohn Harbaugh, Odell Beckham Jr. © ImagnOdell Beckham Jr. left some sort of an impression on New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh as he tries to cement his place on the Giants roster for the season. However, he entered the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings with just over six minutes remaining in the first half and didn’t have a lot of time to prove himself.John Harbaugh spoke to the media after the game about Beckham Jr.’s performance, and found that he was good in some areas, but still had room for improvement.“I thought he looked pretty good, you know, he looked pretty good, made a couple catches, you know, did some things, some things he could have done better. He’ll be the guy, first guy to tell you that, you know, but I thought he looked solid, I would say”, Harbaugh said.“That was fun. I mean, you know, I love him though. I do. He’s, what he’s doing, what he’s fighting for, you know, I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. It’s going to turn out the way, the way it turns out, you know, based on what happens,” Harbaugh said about Beckham Jr. joining the Giants roster for good.Odell Beckham Jr. Talks About His PerformanceOdell Beckham Jr. seemed decently happy with his own display from the preseason clash with the Vikings.“I feel good being out there,” Beckham said to the media.“I feel, you know, when you see the tape or at practice, I’m getting open. But at the end of the day, a receiver always talks about this as the most selfless position on the field.“You, you wait around all game for everybody to do their job just for five opportunities maybe. So when they do come their way, you gotta make the most of them. And, today it was light.”Despite the comments, there is no guarantee that Beckham will make the 53-man roster for the Giants this season. Also Read:“Put Him on Ice Till Week 1, We Saw Enough”: NFL World Reacts As Jeremiyah Love Suffers Injury After Preseason Matchup vs Raiders“If You Could Fill The Ocean With People I’d Like To Play For That”: Emmy-Nominated Actor Reveals Taylor Swift’s Ambitious Plans During 2013 Cameo0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 76 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMBarcelona completely calm over fitness of key midfield duo after being left out of Basel friendlyBarcelona completely calm over fitness of key midfield duo after being left out of Basel friendlyBarcelona’s decision to leave Pedri and Gavi out of the squad for the friendly against FC Basel has raised eyebrows, but there is no alarm inside the club.In fact, according to SPORT, Barcelona are completely relaxed about the fitness of both midfielders. Their absence from the trip is understood to be a precautionary decision by Hansi Flick, who is unwilling to take unnecessary risks during the opening phase of pre-season.The two Spaniards were among the most notable absentees from the travelling squad, aside from players dealing with injuries or waiting for clarity over their futures. However, their situations are not being treated as injury concerns.Instead, Barcelona want to see two of their most important midfielders ready for the competitive campaign rather than pushing them through unnecessary minutes in pre-season friendlies.Pedri following specific individual planAlthough neither player travelled to face Basel, the reasons behind their absences are slightly different.Pedri has been working under an individual programme since returning for pre-season. Barcelona themselves have explained that the midfielder is “following a specific preparation in his first days of pre-season.”The club’s decision is believed to be linked to managing his workload rather than responding to any serious physical issue. Pedri is being eased back into full intensity, with Flick and his staff taking a controlled approach during the early stages of preparation. What about Gavi?Gavi’s situation is somewhat different. The Barcelona midfielder actually cut his holiday short by almost a week to return early and begin working under Flick. He has trained with his teammates, but the coaching staff have chosen not to involve him in every pre-season fixture. He was previously left out of the trip to Udine for the triangular tournament involving Nottingham Forest and Udinese, and he will now remain in Barcelona while the rest of the squad travels to Switzerland. The decision, once again, is based on workload management, as Flick does not see any value in forcing either midfielder into friendly matches when the official season is still ahead.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 66 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSocial media reacts to Nebraska's new alternate uniformsNebraska football officially has its blackout game scheduled for October 31 against the Washington Huskies. This was announced by the program on Saturday afternoon. This will be the second year in a row that Nebraska will host this type of event. They did so last year against the USC Trojans in what was a close contest. The game ended in a 21-17 loss for the Huskers, with the turning point coming when starting quarterback Dylan Raiola went down with an ankle injury. He was out for the rest of the game, and the Trojans were able to capitalize. Now, Nebraska will get a chance to win this game against a very talented Huskies team that features playmaking signal-caller Demond Williams. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMElena Delle Donne reflects on journey at Hall of Fame inductionElena Delle Donne soared to basketball’s competitive heights as a high school and college basketball star in her home state of Delaware, as a WNBA standout and an Olympian. All led to Delle Donne earning basketball’s ultimate and most enduring achievement on Aug. 15 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The 36-year-old Ursuline Academy and University of Delaware graduate was inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.Love letter to hoopsIn a moving speech during her enshrinement ceremony that featured frequent references to family, Delle Donne articulated a love letter to basketball.“You've been with me since I was a gangly kid in Delaware,” she said, “trying to shoot over a ladder named Oscar to help me develop my shooting arc. You never cared if I was awkward.“You turned my greatest childhood insecurity, my height, into a superpower. You never made me feel silly when I was wearing an oven mitt on my guide hand to develop better shooting form.”She was joined on stage by previous inductees Marianne Stanley, the former coach, and ex-Chicago Sky teammate Sylvia Fowles. While Delle Donne was being introduced by master of ceremonies Ahmad Rashad, a video displayed highlights of her career.“Elena Delle Donne is the ultimate mismatch and can score from virtually anywhere,” Stanley said in that clip. The 6-foot-5 Delle Donne was indeed practically indefensible as an outside shooter and equally reliable blocking shots, snaring rebounds and scoring in the post. She sparked Ursuline to four state titles and was a five-time first-team All-State selection from 2004-08. Her 2,818 career points at Ursuline remain a Delaware high school record, boys or girls.Delle Donne was 2008 consensus national high school player of the year as a senior and signed with NCAA power Connecticut. But Delle Donne left UConn after less than 48 hours in the summer of 2008 citing basketball burnout.“I've spent my whole life in love with this game,” Delle Donne said in her remarks, “minus the little breakup where I left UConn after 48 hours, quit the sport entirely, and decided to play collegiate volleyball, but we will not get into that tonight.”Mention of sister Lizzie brings emotions She later came to learn her departure was rooted in homesickness and detachment from family, which includes older sister Lizzie, who is blind and deaf and has cerebral palsy, autism and other health-related problems. In fact, Delle Donne, along with those in the audience and others watching on NBATV, became emotional when talking about Lizzie. Delle Donne’s wife Amanda, father Ernie, mother Joan, brother Gene, sister-in-law Jennifer and niece Gianna were seated in the front row.“Whenever I experienced my worst lows,” she said. “Burnout. Injury. Defeat. Doubt. The lesson I needed was never on the court. It was at home waiting for me with my sister Lizzie.”She later added “I have never met anyone stronger. … For a long time, I thought greatness looked like moments like this: Hall of fame ceremonies, awards, championships. Then I realized the bravest person I know has never experienced any of those things.“Lizzie changed the way I define greatness. She taught me that greatness isn't measured by applause. It's measured by courage, by joy, by showing up for another difficult day without asking ‘Why me?’ She taught me that some of life's greatest victories happen quietly. No cameras, no trophies, just extraordinary strength hidden inside ordinary days.”A success at all levelsDelle Donne is the first Delaware native to be enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Walter Davis, a 2024 inductee who starred at the University of North Carolina and in the NBA, did attend Hockessin’s Sanford School as a post-graduate student in 1972-73 after finishing high school in North Carolina and returning there for college. After leaving UConn, Delle Donne later enrolled at Delaware and starred in volleyball as a freshman but not basketball, sparking Delaware to a conference title and NCAA Tournament berth. She then returned to basketball in 2009-10.Delle Donne finished her Delaware career as the No. 5 scorer in NCAA Division I women’s history with 3,039 career points, despite missing 22 games due to illness or injuries. She was a three-time All-American and sparked Delaware to Colonial Athletic Association titles in 2011-12 and 2012-13, when Delaware regularly earned national Top 25 notice. The Blue Hens were 42-0 in CAA games and 63-6 overall those two years and beat West Virginia and North Carolina in the 2013 NCAA Tournament before losing to Kentucky in the Sweet 16.The second pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Delle Donne was league Rookie of the Year that season, was WNBA MVP in 2015 for the Chicago Sky and again in 2019 for the WNBA champ Washington Mystics. She made seven all-star teams, was a four-time first-team All-WNBA choice and was among the 25 players who made the WNBA’s 25th anniversary team.Delle Donne also won an Olympic gold medal playing for the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.“When you're playing, you think your greatest accomplishment will be a championship, or an MVP, or a Hall of Fame,” said Delle Donne, who remains in the sport as USA Basketball’s managing director of its 3-on-3 team. “But when the game slows down, you realize your greatest accomplishment was never what you achieved. It was who you became on the journey.“Basketball, you gave me confidence. You gave me purpose. You gave me friendships that will last far beyond the game. You gave me a platform to leave this game a little better than when I found it, but maybe your greatest gift was teaching me to recognize greatness in places where no scoreboard exists.’’Contact Kevin Tresolini at ktresolini@delawareonline.com and follow on Twitter @kevintresolini. (AP Photo/Mindaugas Kulbis)2026-08-16T09:41:00Z VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — It’s not all about short-legged speed when 150 corgis gather for an international race celebrating the little dogs. There’s a costume parade, the “smartest nose,” and — of course — the loudest bark. The fifth Corgi Race Vilnius drew dogs and their owners to the Lithuanian capital’s Vingis park on Saturday for what organizers said was the biggest edition yet. There were competitors from Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Germany, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, the United States and Britain — the country most closely associated with the breed, famously a favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II.“In the first year, we gathered 40 corgis from one city. This year, it’s 150 from nine countries, and for the first time we have a participant from the place where the breed originated,” organizer Edvinas Miskas said. “We call Vilnius the European capital of corgis, and when people from the breed’s homeland start coming to us rather than the other way around, that title begins to sound a little more serious.”Ninety-four dogs took part in the main running event, competing in qualifiers, semifinals and the final. In the final, which pitted corgis against each other over 25 meters (82 feet), the winner was American competitor GG, short for Gustave the Girl Dog. Another U.S. entrant, Mr. Corgington, finished a close second. Lithuania’s own Moka, a two-time former champion, was third. But much of the program dispensed with speed to explore the other skills of the dogs — and their owners. Read More There was a costume parade featuring 38 corgis in diverse outfits including a dinosaur suit, a dress and doggy sports gear. Amigo swept both the four-judge jury and the public Facebook vote for a flawless costume entry with a knight-like look. In the “smartest nose” challenge, dogs searched for hidden treats. Latvian corgis Tora and Rusty shared the win. And then there was the loudest bark competition. The first British competitor, 12-year-old Pembroke Welsh corgi Duke from Sedbergh in northwest England, didn’t participate in the main race because of his stately age but was a hopeful in the barking stakes after, as his owner put it, training for his whole life. It was Mr. Corgington who won the loudest bark contest, though. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. He was one of the most traveled competitors. The final race offered him a rematch after he finished second against GG at a major race at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Washington — her second consecutive win there. Half of the corgis registered in Vilnius this year were taking part for the first time. But six veterans — costume winner Amigo, Foksas, Foksis, Madeira, Bulka and Dziugas — have attended every edition.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 31 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRookie LB Jack Kelly led New York Giants in playing time vs. VikingsThe New York Giants ushered in the John Harbaugh era with a sloppy and uninspired 13-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium on Saturday. There were few positives to take away from the game, which featured the Giants committing seven penalties while amassing just 201 yards and turning the ball over twice. However, much of that can be attributed to Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who unexpectedly used exotic looks and late-season blitzes rarely seen in preseason action. Here's a quick look at the snap counts from Saturday's preseason-opening loss.Offensive snaps: 54Defensive snaps: 59Special teams snaps: 24There's not too much to note from the snap counts. They were widely distributed, as they usually are in preseason games, with rookie linebacker Jack Kelly leading the team with 37 snaps. Fellow rookie, offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa, also got a healthy dose of playing time with 30 snaps.Veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. played 30 percent of the offensive snaps, which he desired as he fights to make the 53-man roster. This article originally appeared on Giants Wire: Rookie LB Jack Kelly led New York Giants in playing time vs. Vikings0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'It's never easy': Devdutt Padikkal opens up on long wait for India Test comebackDevdutt Padikkal marked his return to Test cricket in style, scoring his maiden century in the format during India's first innings of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka. The Karnataka left-hander produced a composed yet attacking knock, handling the challenging conditions with maturity and putting pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. Padikkal was particularly effective against spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha, combining caution with well-timed aggression. The 26-year-old came into the Test on the back of a century against SLC XI in the warm-up game and continued his strong run of form when it mattered most.Padikkal may have found it difficult to break into India's playing XI had Sai Sudharsan been fit and available for the series. However, his century has strengthened his case for a continued run at No.3.Speaking after the close of play on Day 1, Padikkal revealed that determination was key to getting through a physically demanding innings in Galle, where the heat and humidity took a toll.“In this knock, determination for me was playing through that tiredness and fatigue that I was feeling, especially towards the third session. I think it was getting really hot, and we were losing a lot of fluid. We were sweating all the time. So it was really important that I was determined enough to keep going and keep pushing forward,” Padikkal said in a video shared by BCCI.The batter also stressed the importance of maintaining concentration on a surface that did not make batting easy.“It wasn't the easiest of wickets to bat on. I think we had to make sure that we didn't play too many last shots. We had to make sure that we kept our minds in the game as long as possible because, like I said, again, when you get tired, it's easy to lose that discipline, and I think as a team we did that well today,” he added.Padikkal shared a 150-run partnership with KL Rahul before Rahul retired hurt on 77 after suffering from cramps. For Padikkal, the century was particularly significant as he had not played a Test for India since 2024 and had waited almost two years for another opportunity. His return to the side came after a prolific run across domestic cricket and the IPL. Strong performances in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, along with his IPL form, helped him force his way back into the reckoning.Padikkal admitted that the long wait had tested his patience but also gave him time to improve his game.“Patience for me, I think it was more to do with what I've gone through before this game. I think my last Test was in 2024. So it's been a long time coming, and I've had to patiently wait, look on from the outside. It's never easy. But at the same time, it gave me time to really work on my game and perfect things that needed perfecting. And I'm really glad that all that hard work came to effect today. It feels great,” said Padikkal. The left-hander also revealed that he felt nervous as he approached the three-figure mark, but eventually managed to overcome the pressure.“I was a bit nervous towards the end when I got closer to it, but I think that's part of it, and I'm really happy to get over that. Especially this ground, I think even when we came here with the India SI, I got a few runs and even in the warm-up game, obviously I got some runs. So yeah, I guess it's a really special place for me and glad to keep it going,” he added. 1332715020 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM“Seriously Unacceptable,” “Bench Him” – Yankees Fans Furious At Heliot Ramos After Failed Base-Running Attempt In Loss To Blue JaysHeliot Ramos - New York Yankees | © ImagnHeliot Ramos has been a source of frustration for New York Yankees fans since his trade-deadline acquisition. Ramos has gone hitless in his last 23 at-bats and has totaled just two hits in 31 plate appearances as a Yankee. The numbers have been highly discouraging for the Puerto Rican, who was acquired in hopes of getting the Bombers out of their offensive slump.Although his offense has been underwhelming since he arrived in the Bronx, fans are now questioning his competitiveness. The latest criticism came after Ramos was seen not hustling to first base following a misplay by the shortstop in Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays.Watch the video here:Fans expressed disappointment with what they felt was a lack of effort on the bases.“This is seriously one of the most unacceptable things of the season. When your offense is this bad….bad meaning one of the worst in baseball for over two and a half months and then this happens as a struggling newcomer. There has to be accountability here,” one fan commented. It was yet another lackluster night on offense for the Yankees, who managed only one run, off the bat of George Lombard Jr. The Bombers lost 4-1 and, with that, the series. The finale will be played on Sunday.Heliot Ramos is Having an Underwhelming CampaignRamos has a .244 batting average, nine home runs, 34 RBIs, and a .685 OPS in 84 games this season. Struggling badly on the pitch and under attack off it.But the introduction of a batch of talented youngsters from both sides of the Irish Sea brought renewed hope and optimism amongst the vast but disillusioned Celtic support that the good times would soon return after more than a decade in the doldrums, including a dreadful flirt with an unspeakable relegation in the immediate post-war years.Charlie Tully, Bobby Collins, Bertie Peacock, Willie Fernie and Sean Fallon were amongst the latest hopefuls to wear those famous Hoops and live the dreams of thousands across the globe, joining established stars such as Bobby Evans and John McPhail. In At the end of the storm, the first volume of Celtic in the Fifties, author and historian Matt Corr takes you step-by-step through that period from a Celtic perspective. From the controversial treatment of Tully, which threatened to end the Celtic career of the Irish genius, to the relief of a first major trophy lift in 13 years. From McPhail’s hat-trick against Rangers in the ‘Danny Kaye final’ to the infamous saga of the ‘second-hand’ St Mungo Cup. Stein’s list of teammates reads like a ‘Who’s Who?’ of Celtic greats, evoking memories of a quite wonderful era.The genius of Charlie Tully, Willie Fernie and Bertie Peacock. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReport: Barcelona still pushing hard for Rodri dealReport: Barcelona still pushing hard for Rodri dealRodri transfer latest as Barcelona close in on Manchester City agreementBarcelona’s pursuit of Rodri has moved into a more serious phase, with TeamTalk reporting that a third offer has now been lodged for the Manchester City midfielder. The latest proposal is said to be worth around €70million (£60m), a notable increase on previous attempts, but it still falls short of City’s asking price. There is a growing sense that this deal is edging towards a conclusion. City are understood to want a package worth €80million (£68m), and while the gap remains, the tone of the negotiations appears to have shifted. According to the report, “City sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk that they now expect a deal to be completed in the coming days, but Barcelona will need to get the overall package up to €80million (£68m).” That is a strong indicator of where matters stand.photo IMAGOBarcelona step up Rodri transfer pushThis has not been a sudden move. Barcelona first tested the waters with a bid of £38.5m, which was rejected quickly. A second offer, worth around €60m (£51m), also failed to make enough progress. Now, with a third bid on the table, the Spanish champions appear to have cleared one of the biggest hurdles, which is convincing City that they are prepared to move towards the required figure. The report states that “with bonuses and add-ons included, the two sides are now understood to be getting much closer to City’s valuation and there is growing confidence that the transfer will eventually be agreed.” That wording matters. It suggests this is now a negotiation over structure and final details, rather than a stand-off over principle.Manchester City stance becomes clearerRodri, now 30, is entering the final year of his contract and remains one of the most decorated midfielders of the modern City era. Since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2019, he has won four Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups, while also claiming the 2024 Ballon d’Or.There has also been a clear process from City’s side. TeamTalk reports that “City had insisted that Rodri return to England if a deal with Barcelona was not completed before the start of pre-season.” That happened, with the midfielder returning to Manchester while talks continued. It is also significant that “City had also made it clear to Rodri’s representatives that they needed to play an active role in getting Barcelona’s offer closer to the required figure.”Rodri camp heavily involved in talksThat part now looks pivotal. “TEAMtalk understands the player’s camp has indeed become heavily involved in the negotiations and is now working alongside Barcelona in an effort to find a solution.” When a player’s representatives are operating in tandem with the buying club, it typically means there is a shared confidence that the framework of a transfer can be reached. The key line may be the simplest one, “All parties remain confident that the situation will reach a successful conclusion, with Rodri still determined to make the move to the Camp Nou.” For now, he remains a Manchester City player. Yet the direction of travel is increasingly clear, and unless talks stall unexpectedly, Barcelona appear to be closing in on one of the biggest midfield deals of the window. Our ViewFrom a frustrated Manchester City supporter’s perspective, this feels like one of those transfers that makes perfect financial sense on paper and still leaves a bad taste. Rodri has been the reference point in midfield for years, the player who made everything settle down, the one who gave City control in the biggest matches. Seeing a Ballon d’Or winner pushed towards the exit, even for €80million (£68m), is hard to dress up as good news.If he truly wants Barcelona, then fine, no club can keep a player forever. But City supporters will fairly ask why it has come to this point. You do not casually replace a midfielder of this intelligence, composure and authority. There are elite players, and then there are system-defining players. Rodri sits firmly in the second category. There is frustration too in the idea that Barcelona can keep inching forward with bids until the selling club gives way. First £38.5m, then €60m (£51m), now €70million (£60m). It has felt like a long process designed to wear City down. Fans will want the club to stay firm and get every penny of that €80million (£68m) package.More than anything, this report underlines how important the next decision will be. If Rodri goes, City cannot afford sentiment, delay or half-measures. They need a ready-made answer, not a project, not a gamble, and not a player who needs two years to understand the role. Anything less and supporters will feel the club have willingly created a problem at the base of midfield.Source: TeamTalk0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMJoey Logano’s Playoff Push Gets Another Boost With Richmond TriumphFeb 15, 2026; Daytona Beach, Florida, USA; NASCAR Cup Series driver Joey Logano (22) during the 68th running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. © Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesJoey Logano leapfrogged into the top-10 standings after winning Saturday’s Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway. The result marks his second win in just four races.Logano had a podium start in the season-opening Daytona 500, but struggled to make headway ever since. At his lowest, the former champion was out of the Chase cutoff in 20th, while Team Penske teammate Ryan Blaney consistently finished top-10.With his latest win, Logano has tied Blaney for two wins this season. The No.22 driver addressed the resurgence in his victory lane interview, saying,“Don’t let the boys get hot, we’re pretty strong right now. It’s awesome to see the speed in the No. 22 again….we’ve had a great car here the last five races. We haven’t been able to capitalize with a win, we’ve been so close but sweet redemption today.”“We got a strong team, no doubt, and Paul made some great calls there. The 19 was better than us in that last run so I was trying to just manage the tires and yeah, kind of a fun back and forth….it’s getting the points that we need. This is important, we need to get ourselves back in the top-10 and I assume this gets us pretty close,” he added via NASCAR’s official website.Chase Briscoe finished runner-up after leading 171 laps. Meanwhile, Joey Logano’s teammate Austin Cindric grabbed his second top-5 of the season, finishing third.Logano made the most gains with a four-place jump in the standings, placing ninth with 659 points to his name. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver is also on a four-race streak in the top-10.Driving the No.19 Toyota, Briscoe was the fastest driver on track, but was led astray by brake issues in his final run. Logano, who led on six different occasions, took over for good during a pit stop with 25 laps left.“I thought that last run, I was a little bit better than him (Logano). It’s weird to be mad running second here, this has been a real struggle for me at this place…but just to be that close and not get it done is still frustrating,” Briscoe said via aforementioned source. The result marks Chase Briscoe’s maiden top-10 at Richmond Raceway. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMInside Nashville SC victory vs Inter Miami, holding Messi scorelessThe race for the MLS Supporters' Shield is now firmly in the hands of Nashville SC.NSC claimed a 4-1 win over Lionel Messi's Inter Miami at Geodis Park on Aug. 15, its joint-biggest win of the MLS season, to extend its lead atop the league to five points. NSC now sits on 43 points (13-4-2), while Miami looms behind on 38 points (11-5-3) in second.Hany Mukhtar bagged a brace, marking his first NSC goals since a hat trick against LAFC on May 17, while recent signee Elias Saad provided two assists. And while the one-sided win against last season's champion tightens Nashville's grip on first, Mukhtar was cautious on making any claims with 15 regular season matches still remaining."I told the guys before the game, we deserve to have this big match and it is a compliment to our achievement, what we've done the first 18, 19 games now. But we have to go game by game," Mukhtar said. "It's not a statement. There are too many games left and (we're) always focused on the next challenge."NSC is back in action on Aug. 19 at New York Red Bulls. How Nashville SC held Lionel Messi scorelessNashville SC hands Miami its joint-largest loss of the season, while becoming just the third MLS team to put four goals past the Herons. And while NCS's offense was in fine form, as all three forwards got on the scoresheet, its defense has now held Miami to two goals in its last three matchups.Miami's main goalscoring threat came via the eight-time Ballon D'or winner Messi, who entered the game with 16 goals in 12 prior appearances against Nashville. It took a team effort, along with some luck, to ensure he didn't add to that tally.Messi had a first-half penalty kick saved by keeper Brian Schwake, which was deflected out and put home by Miami's Sergio Reguilon before the referee deemed he'd entered the box early and the goal was overturned."We were lucky," SC coach B.J. Callaghan said afterwards, alluding to Messi's missed penalty. "But we'll take it, those are the things that happen. I think when our team plays Miami, there's familiarity and again it's a team effort. He's obviously their best player and you just have to make sure that you're aware at all times, because he's aware at all times in looking how to hurt you."I think it's a collective effort and I think you saw many different players tonight make plays. Even the solutions that came off the bench tonight, I thought did a really good job of making sure we contained him the best we could."Elias Saad providing flair from NSC wingMiami provided little in the way of defensive resistance in the second half particularly, which saw Nashville score three goals in a 14-minute span to all but secure the win. The first of those second-half goals came as Saad found Mukhtar for his second assist of the match and third since making his club debut on Aug. 1.Lining up on the left side of the front line, Saad has quickly built a rapport alongside Muktar, Sam Surridge and Cristian Espinoza up top, with his flair on the ball and passing vision leading to five chances created against Miami."He gives the team a different look. He's a very different player than what we had in the past," Mukhtar said of his teammate. "He goes 1v1, looks for (combinations) constantly. We're very happy that he's here. He's done a phenomenal job to come into the team, which is not easy, if you come to a team which is established, which is winning.More: Record-breaking goal not enough to lift Nashville SC past Monterrey in Leagues Cup"But we welcomed him with open arms and he (did) a phenomenal job tonight."Harrison Campbell can be reached at hcampbell@usatodayco.com and follow him on X (formerly Twitter) @hccamp.This article originally appeared on Nashville Tennessean: Inside Nashville SC victory vs Inter Miami, holding Messi scoreless0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMDebbie Kent's dominance for Lansing Laurels earned her spot in GL Sports Hall of FameDebbie Kent first went to the Lansing Laurels softball clinic when she was just 13. She was still too young to try out for the squad, but she became the batgirl.Little did she know then that eventually she would become one of the best pitchers to ever wear the Laurels jersey, and now Kent will be honored as part of the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame's 2026 class."I found out that my friends had nominated me for it, and it's a great honor," Kent said. "I really am very appreciative of it. My teammates and coaches are really the ones who should be getting it."As soon as Kent was old enough to participate during the Laurels clinic in the early 1970s, her pitching prowess was quickly noticed. She made the team and thrived on the mound from ages 16-18, and her entire family got to travel with her to see the Laurels play across the Midwest."That was the most important thing to me, having my family there to support me," Kent said. "We always knew when my dad arrived because he had a cowbell and he would start ringing it and you could hear it from two blocks away so everyone would know he was there."Kent played with a number of great players while with the Laurels, including Carol Hutchins, who would go on to become the longtime University of Michigan softball coach and was a Greater Lansing Sports Hall inductee in 2000. As teams, both the 1974 and 1975 Laurels squads were inducted in 2013.Kent attended Lansing Community College following her high school graduation and was one of the team's top pitchers there. Due to LCC competing at the club level at the time, Kent was able to still play for the Laurels in the summertime, where she continued to develop her game. While with the Laurels, Kent had a 30-14 record in the 1973 season and helped lead the Laurels to a 61-27 overall mark. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMRed Sox announce Masataka Yoshida update after exit from gameThe Boston Red Sox may have suffered a significant blow to their lineup Saturday after Masataka Yoshida exited the game with a left hamstring injury. The Red Sox will likely be making some changes to the MLB roster in the coming days. Yoshida appeared to hurt himself while running to second base on a double in the third inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He immediately showed a noticeable limp and was removed from the game, with the Red Sox announcing that he was dealing with left hamstring tightness.MORE: MLB awards predictions for the 2026 seasonYoshida has been swinging a hot batAug 14, 2026; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Boston Red Sox designated hitter Masataka Yoshida (7) flies out during the fish inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. Mandatory Credit: David Dermer-Imagn ImagesThe timing of the injury is particularly frustrating because Yoshida has been one of Boston’s more productive hitters recently. The 33-year-old entered Saturday batting .272 with five home runs and 28 RBIs, and he had been especially productive over the past month. Since July 5, Yoshida had hit .307 with three home runs, seven doubles, 17 RBIs and 15 runs in 30 games. He had also become a regular presence near the top of Boston’s lineup.Losing that production for any extended period would be a significant problem for a Red Sox team that has already dealt with its share of injuries this season.MORE: 4 MLB teams most likely to win the World Series, not including the DodgersIL stint appears likelyThe exact severity of Yoshida’s hamstring strain remains unknown, but an injured-list stint appears increasingly likely.Yoshida reportedly pointed to a previous hamstring injury he suffered while playing in Japan, saying that injury cost him approximately one month. That’s obviously not the type of timeline Boston wants to hear. For now, the Red Sox will have to wait for further testing before knowing exactly how long Yoshida will be unavailable. But considering how important his bat has become over the past several weeks, even a short absence would be a tough one for Boston. The Red Sox can only hope this latest hamstring issue isn’t serious enough to keep Yoshida out for another month.— Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSky Sports: Chelsea defender wanted by two major European clubs after missing friendlySky Sports: Chelsea defender wanted by two major European clubs after missing friendlyTosin Adarabioyo has interest from two European clubs and Chelsea are willing sellers, at the right price. If you enjoy Talk Chelsea coverage and want to see more of it, add us as a preferred source on Google to make us a favourite and see more of our content. At the start of the summer, we felt there was a good chance Tosin stayed at Chelsea. The plain fact was there were so many defenders to move on, and probably room for 5 in the squad. So selling him or loaning him wouldn’t have been as high priority as finding a move for higher valued players (like Trevoh Chalobah) or youngsters who need minutes (like Mamadou Sarr). But teams are always at the whim of the market, and in this case it looks like there’s simply more interest in Tosin than some of his teammates.Tosin set to leave – so who stays?Tosin (Photo by Darrian Traynor/Getty Images)We had already heard reports about Benfica being interested in the former Fulham defender, and now Sky Sports have added Marseille to the list.Because we signed him on a free, we don’t have to worry about any specific number in terms of a sale. We just want to bank as much as possible. With Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck now in the squad to take over his “leadership” role, we can now move on.If either of the interested teams proposes a solid deal in the next few days, we expect Tosin to be gone pretty quickly. That then creates the interesting question of who stays in his place to be the 5th centre back.In other news…Chelsea beat Real Sociedad in their final preseason game yesterday, with one player in particular showing some outstanding form.Chelsea’s squad for yesterday’s game told you a lot about where the Blues roster is at right now, with a lot to do before the window closes.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM'Team didn’t have confidence in me': Ravindra Jadeja’s candid revelation that left him 'disturbed'Ravindra Jadeja has opened up about the struggles he faced during the early stages of his India career, admitting that being pushed down the batting order often affected his confidence and made him question the team's faith in his batting ability. As India look to continue their dominance after a commanding Day 1 against Sri Lanka, Jadeja reflected on his growth as a Test batter and revealed how he developed the temperament to play long innings.“When I started, I used to bat at number 4. If you look at my entire Ranji Trophy career, my average is more than 60. Whatever Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy first-class cricket I have played domestically, my batting average is more than 60. So somewhere, I had that belief that I had that ability. But sometimes what happens is that you come into the Indian team and you don't get that batting number,” Jadeja said in a chat with broadcasters ahead of day two’s play, which has been delayed due to rain.Jadeja recalls confidence strugglesThe all-rounder admitted that regularly batting at No. 8 or 9, and sometimes even below Ravichandran Ashwin, affected his confidence during the initial years of his international career.“Sometimes the situation is such that I have batted at number 8 and 9 as well. So, when you are sitting in the dressing room with your pads on, next to you, a fast bowler is selecting a ball. Seeing all those things, my morale and confidence would go down. Sometimes you think to yourself, ‘I have to go and score runs,'” he added.Jadeja explained that watching bowlers prepare to bat ahead of him often made him feel that the team did not have complete confidence in his batting.“And in that same dressing room, a fast bowler is selecting the ball, thinking, ‘Come on, now bowling is coming.’ So because of all those things, my confidence was literally disturbed. I would think, ‘Oh man, what is this? The team doesn't even have confidence in me?’ So I have seen that in my early days, that I didn't get that number. Very low, many times I even went in to bat below Ashwin. So somewhere, all those things disturbed me,” Jadeja revealed.India in command after Day 1Jadeja's reflections came after India produced a dominant batting display on the opening day of the Test against Sri Lanka. India finished Day 1 on 288/2, putting themselves in a strong position after the rain-affected day's play. Devdutt Padikkal was the star of the day, scoring a magnificent unbeaten 131 to register his maiden Test century. KL Rahul also played a crucial knock of 77, while Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten on 27 at the close of play.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMReal Madrid forward not expected back from serious injury until early 2027Real Madrid forward not expected back from serious injury until early 2027Real Madrid have made a signing to add to their squad’s attacking firepower this summer, bringing in Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.Los Blancos shelled out a massive €140 million to bring the 19-year-old to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.Jose Mourinho now has a star-studded front three in the form of Kylian Mbappe, Diomande and Vinicius Junior. However, Real Madrid must also remember that they have yet another superstar in their ranks who is currently recovering from an injury.Rodrygo has been sidelined since 18 March 2026 after suffering a serious knee injury involving both his ACL and meniscus.Rodrygo still far away from a return to actionNow, according to Arancha Rodriguez, Los Blancos are expected to be without the Brazilian forward for several more months, with a return likely in early 2027.The initial recovery timeline for the Brazilian was estimated at between 10 and 12 months, meaning Real Madrid are unlikely to have him available during the first half of the new season.Rodrygo won’t be back until early 2027. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images)Given the severity of the injury, Madrid will naturally have little reason to accelerate his rehabilitation.Recovering from an ACL injury is already a lengthy process, while the additional meniscus damage makes careful management even more important. The priority will be ensuring Rodrygo returns fully prepared rather than simply getting him back onto the pitch as quickly as possible.Mourinho must plan without RodrygoFor Jose Mourinho, the situation effectively means constructing his attacking plans without Rodrygo for the opening months of the campaign.Despite having significant depth in the forward line, Rodrygo is as versatile as they come and could have had a useful role to play had he been fit.The 25-year-old can operate on either flank, centrally or behind the striker, giving a coach several ways of changing the shape of an attack during matches.Patience will be paramountRodrygo is recovering from a knee injury. (Photo by Yasser Bakhsh/Getty Images)Even an early 2027 return would not necessarily mean Rodrygo immediately returning to his previous level. After potentially spending close to a year without competitive football, rebuilding rhythm, confidence and sharpness could take additional time. This might have been one of the main reasons Florentino Perez sanctioned a move for a new superstar attacker this summer.Mourinho will be intent on not putting too much pressure on Rodrygo during his recovery and easing him back in once he is available.Once Rodrygo returns to action and slowly gets back to 100%, it remains to be seen how the attacking dynamics at Madrid shape up.For now, it is important that the Brazilian focuses on his recovery and returns to action without any further setbacks in the coming months.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMEagles veteran may have won starting job after sitting out vs. RavensBALTIMORE — Before the Eagles took their first snap against the Ravens on Saturday night, one of their players emerged victorious.Notably, veteran safety Marcus Epps sat out with the other starters, making him a winner without having to play. Philadelphia’s defensive starters did not suit up for the preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium, so it’s clear now that Epps is one of them. The Eagles had Epps and Michael Carter II compete for the starting safety job during camp, but Saturday night’s decision to hold Epps out and play Carter indicated that the team viewed Epps as the starter.Carter will be the Eagles’ dime back and the team’s top backup safety and nickel cornerback. He has had a strong summer at safety, so it’s surprising the Eagles are not giving him a better shot to win the job.MORE BY CAYDEN STEELEYoung Eagles defender’s career seemed dim after rough start. Now: ‘He’s gotten so much better’Aug. 16, 2026, 7:36 a.m.Young Eagles player looked like a bust two weeks ago. Now he’s biggest preseason winner vs. RavensAug. 16, 2026, 2:07 a.m.The position battle at safety is not officially over until Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio says Epps is the starter or until Epps starts in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders. But it looks like Epps is ahead of Carter, and it’s his job to lose.Epps finished with 21 tackles in 12 games with the Eagles last year, including four starts. He is set to replace former Eagles safety Reed Blankenship, who signed with the Houston Texans in free agency.Carter was still playing during the second quarter, which further indicates where he stands. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMWhere 9 Jaguars position battles stand after first preseason gameFollowing the Jacksonville Jaguars' first preseason game, let's take a temperature check on where several key positional battles now stand. As far as the overall evaluation process goes when it comes to determining playing time, roles, and who makes the final roster, it's been a big few days, with the joint practice and preseason game likely carrying more weight. From the outside looking in, here is where things seem to stand.Third quarterback roleBased on playing time in the preseason game, Carter Bradley seems to have the advantage over Joey Aguilar. No mystery at tight endNot that we needed any more proof, but Tanner Koziol is very much ahead of Quintin Morris and Hunter Long on the depth chart.Wide receiver depthA similar situation here, while Austin Trammell offers experience and special teams help, CJ Williams and Josh Cameron are ahead of him in the wide receiver pecking order. Both rookies have often capitalized on their opportunities.Offensive line configurationThere's been so much movement due to injuries that it's not easy to know exactly where things stand up front. That said, Anton Harrison has seemingly stuck at left tackle since moving there. With Patrick Mekari and Walker Little sidelined, Jonah Monheim has often played right guard and Wyatt Milum right tackle. Depending on the severity of Chuma Edoga's injury, Milum could stay at tackle for the time being. Emmanuel Pregnon performed well in the preseason game and could push Monheim -- who is also the backup center -- for that first off-the-bench role at guard.Defensive end rotationBJ Green has made a lot of plays, paving the way for him to see regular rotational snaps. Danny Striggow should see his share of playing time as well. Wesley Williams has had a quiet camp but a very good preseason game. Zach Durfee has flashed enough to earn a roster spot, although as the fourth option in this rotation, how much playing time he sees remains to be seen.Defensive tackle rotationMatt Dickerson is ahead of Ruke Orhorhoro on the depth chart. Albert Regis will back up DaVon Hamilton.LinebackerVentrell Miller or Branson Combs? It seems too close to call right now. That said, it does seem that as of late, Miller has made a stronger push, perhaps giving him the slight upper hand. If the Jaguars keep an extra linebacker, Yasir Abdullah is very much in the mix for that role -- competing with Jalen McLeod -- after his performance against the Saints.Cornerback depthIf the Jaguars keep five cornerbacks, I think Jabbar Muhammad has the edge over Christian Braswell. Muhammad has made more plays throughout camp and has played both inside and out. If Jacksonville keeps a sixth cornerback, Braswell will be the favorite for that role, but watch UDFA Devon Marshall.SafetyCaleb Ransaw will be the Jaguars' third safety -- a role that does see playing time under Anthony Campanile. Jalen Huskey could be making a push for the fourth spot on the depth chart, potentially jumping Rayuan Lane after his performance vs. the Saints. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Where 9 Jaguars position battles stand after first preseason game0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 6 Views 0 Anteprima -
linkAPNEWS.COMRepublicans won the redistricting competition. Don’t tell that to this California congressmanRep. Kevin Kiley, I-Calif., a candidate for the California 6th District seat in the House of Representatives in the Nov. 3, election, appears at a campaign event in Citrus Heights, Calif., Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)2026-08-16T11:42:33Z LINCOLN, Calif. (AP) — One thing Anne Smull, a retired feedstore owner, was looking forward to on Election Day was voting for the man who currently represents her in Congress, conservative Rep. Kevin Kiley. Now she can’t. That’s because California Democrats sliced Kiley’s district six ways as payback for Republican redistricting in Texas and elsewhere. The chunk of the district that Smull, who identifies as a conservative, lives in is now grafted onto an overwhelmingly Democratic seat based in the state’s wine country.During a recent lunch at a cafe in Lincoln, a onetime agricultural town that has morphed into a bedroom community on the edge of Sacramento’s exurban sprawl, Smull was heartbroken to hear she can no longer vote for Kiley.“He believes in the same things I do,” Smull said. “It feels sneaky and underhanded.” Republicans started the redistricting competition. Democrats might finish itDemocratic voters in several other states know how Smull feels.President Donald Trump last year told GOP-controlled states to redraw their maps before this year’s midterm elections to increase the number of winnable seats for Republicans in order to help the party hold onto the U.S. House. The effort was turbocharged by a U.S. Supreme Court decision this spring that neutralized a key provision of the Voting Rights Act and cleared the way for Republicans to redraw more seats across the South that had elected Black Democrats.Democratic-leaning and heavily minority communities from Texas to Tennessee have been split into multiple congressional districts that dilute the Democratic vote by stretching deep into conservative areas. In the future, it is likely that more Republican voters in other states will go through what Smull and other conservatives in Northern California are facing. Democrats in Maryland, New York, Illinois and other strongholds have pledged to retaliate in time for the 2028 elections and split Republican-leaning districts the way their California counterparts did Kiley’s. Democrats have been hindered nationally by stricter rules against partisan line-drawing in their states, but California showed a way around that. California Democrats won voter approval last year to redraw the state’s congressional map, originally made by an independent commission, and formed five new Democratic-leaning seats. Read More ‘We have zero voice,’ says voter angry at the Democratic drive for a new political mapKiley’s is one of them. The reworked political lines led the two-term congressman to leave the Republican Party and run as an independent in the slightly Democratic-leaning district that now includes his home.He spoke out against partisan gerrymandering, even unsuccessfully trying to force the Republican-led House to allow a vote on a bill to ban mid-decade redistricting. “We’ve seen partisan divisions really spin out of control in really harmful ways, and I think exhibit number one is the redistricting wars,” Kiley recently told a group of voters in the suburb of Citrus Heights.Democrats contend Kiley’s party switch is purely a political trick to survive in a more liberal district. They note he still caucuses with House Republicans, has voted for many of the GOP’s priorities, including Trump’s sweeping budget and tax cut bill last year, and that political organizations run by House Republicans are spending money to back his reelection.Even some of Kiley’s supporters think the election was a factor in the congressman’s decision to become an independent. “My original thinking was he did it because of redistricting — maybe it’d help him get reelected,” said John Coburn, a 68-year-old retired business owner, at the Citrus Heights event.Coburn is furious at the Democrats’ redistricting and hopes Kiley wins. Coburn does not care that they did it in retaliation for Texas, where Republicans at Trump’s directive revised that state’s map to carve out up to five new winnable conservative seats.“I don’t care about Texas, I live in California,” Coburn said, adding that “40% of the state is Republican, and we have zero voice. Zero. It’s not how our Founding Fathers intended.” For Democrats in the district, a rare political opportunityIn an interview, Kiley said his switch to independent was no political gambit. If he wanted to stay in the House, he argued, he could have had an easier time staying in the GOP, moving to a more conservative district that included parts of his old one and running in a Republican primary there.“I could have gone there and run and played the same game these other politicians are playing,” he said.Kiley said he is caucusing with Republicans to avoid losing his seats on committees and that in the next Congress he will try to change rules so independent members do not lose committee seats because they do not caucus with one of the two major parties.Among his backers, he noted, is onetime Democratic presidential hopeful Andrew Yang, a former technology entrepreneur who co-founded a centrist party for independents. The Democrat running against Kiley, former state Sen. Richard Pan, scoffs at his rival’s newfound independent status.“He was a MAGA champion when he first ran for Congress, and now he’s trying to say ‘I’m not,’” Pan told a crowd at a senior community in Roseville, referring to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement. Earlier that day, Pan swung by the Placer County Democratic Party office, tucked away on the second story of a brick shopping arcade in Lincoln’s compact downtown.Placer is a Republican county that stretches from the Sacramento suburbs to the northwestern shores of Lake Tahoe. The entire county is in Kiley’s current district, but it will be divided among three districts in the new map.Kathleen Crawford, chair of the county Democratic Party, was enthusiastic about the county getting carved up.“It’s worth it, because we have an opportunity to get Democratic representation, which has been missing from our county,” Crawford said. “I’ve been here 15 years, and this is my first real opportunity to elect a Democrat.”A never-ending cycle that cuts out ‘the little people’Lincoln’s downtown is flanked by fruit, vegetable and flower farms, as well as new subdivisions. The community and its neighboring suburbs have become a destination for people fleeing the San Francisco Bay Area’s housing prices. That has helped change the once solidly conservative area into a political battleground where skilled mapmakers can draw winnable seats for Democrats.Ed Church, a 61-year-old risk manager, was eating lunch at Simple Pleasures cafe in Lincoln when he contemplated Kiley’s shift. A Democrat, Church has not been a Kiley fan and he was bemused by the congressman’s move.“If that’s how he’d been initially and not so MAGA, I probably could have supported him,” Church said of Kiley’s independent status. Now Church, as a Lincoln resident, is in a purely Democratic district and will not have a say in Kiley’s fate in November. His main criteria in the election will be “who’s going to stand up to Trump?” Across the street at a gun store, Wesley Johnson, 43, who considers himself a conservative independent, said he was dispirited by the state’s redistricting.“I feel Northern California is not represented fairly,” Johnson said. “San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles control everything.”He acknowledged Republicans were doing the same thing in states they controlled and said he did not know how it could stop.“You’re just cutting out the little people,” Johnson said.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

linkAPNEWS.COMBen Franklin chose America. Son William chose the crown. This civil war is a microcosm of revolutionThe Benjamin Franklin House is pictured in central London, Monday, May 11, 2026. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung)2026-08-16T11:38:39Z LONDON (AP) — In central London, near where tourists and business travelers board Eurostar trains to Paris, lies the burial place of Benjamin Franklin’s eldest son — a man whose life and family relationships were upended by his stance on the American Revolution.William Franklin was buried at the graveyard of St. Pancras Old Church following his death in 1813, more than three decades after he was forced to leave America because of his service to the country his father fought so hard to win independence from. His burial in the capital of what was then the British Empire is a reminder that the Revolution was as much a civil war as it was the founding act of the United States of America. It is also, historians say, a reminder that the conflict that destroyed friendships and ripped apart families 250 years ago continues today.“Now especially, I think it is important for people to understand that American history is 250 years of everybody disagreeing with each other,” said James Taub, associate curator at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia.“The American Revolution is an ongoing event. We are living it, right still to this day,” he said. “And we’re all taking part in it in one way or another.” America’s creation story is anything but simpleAfter President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair in Washington, after the band concerts and barbecues and fireworks that marked Independence Day celebrations across the U.S., the country is still faced with the task of forming a more perfect union out of the anger and confrontation that have filled the period since the Republican returned to the White House in January 2025. It is a messy process that started amid the wreckage of the Revolution. Read More Often simplified as the tale of the plucky patriots who banded together to defeat the mighty British Empire, the revolution was more accurately an eight-year war fought by people who once saw themselves as British against the armies of their former sovereign. As much as one-third of the population remained loyal to King George III and at times during the war loyalist Americans were the biggest contingent of troops in the British forces. Enslaved Black people fought on both sides of the conflict, as did Indigenous people. People based their allegiances on who they thought was more likely to deliver freedom and justice. That complicated reality played out in the Franklin family. A revolution for the colonies and a tear in the Franklin family’s unity When Ben Franklin flew a kite into a thunderstorm in 1752 to demonstrate that lightning was essentially a massive electrical spark, young William Franklin was by his side.Five years later, father and son traveled to London together after Ben Franklin was sent to the capital of the British Empire to represent Pennsylvania’s colonial government. As Ben Franklin settled into his home at 36 Craven St., which today serves as a museum of the Founding Father’s life in London, William studied law and married. Both enjoyed London’s culture and nightlife.William Franklin returned to America and became governor of New Jersey in 1763, a post he would hold for the next 13 years. But father and son came into increasing conflict when Ben Franklin returned to Philadelphia in 1775. While the elder Franklin backed growing calls for independence as a member of the Continental Congress, William rejected the authority of Congress and continued to represent the king. William Franklin was arrested by the emerging American government’s forces as “an enemy of the country’s liberty” in January 1776 and imprisoned until October 1778, much of the time in solitary confinement. After his release in a prisoner exchange, he became a leader of the loyalist community in the British stronghold of New York City.Following the defeat of British forces, William Franklin sailed for London in 1782. He is believed to have had only one brief meeting with his father between his arrest and Ben Franklin’s death in 1790.Franklin warned his son about the risk from the royal tiesThe bitter split came about even though Ben Franklin repeatedly warned his son that if he did not step down as royal governor, the new government would arrest him, said Daniel Mark Epstein, who chronicled the relationship in his book “The Loyal Son: The War in Ben Franklin’s House.” But William Franklin would not relent. “He was absolutely not gonna budge,” Epstein said. “He was the last governor to leave his office, and he had to be dragged away literally in irons.”Epstein sees the Franklin story as cautionary tale for the angry citizens of 21st-century America, a country marked by easy access to guns and falling educational standards. By contrast, colonial America was a highly literate society where 90% of the population could read and people were more likely to argue out their problems than resort to violence.Yet still the colonies’ differences with Britain descended into war.“Our educational system has failed us here,” Epstein said. “We’re really in a terrible crisis in terms of education. People find it very, very difficult to have rational arguments because they don’t have the language and yet there’s this crazy availability of weapons.”Taub takes a broader view, seeing echoes of the conflicts that ignited the Revolution in the tensions of today. He said Americans need to understand the complexities of the Revolutionary era so they can see how unique the Declaration of Independence was in 1776 and why so many other countries have since modeled their founding documents on it.“It makes me feel better about us today,” he said. “And I think it will show that we’re just part of 250 years of an ongoing story and 250 years of an ongoing mission that was laid down, a cause that was laid down by people in 1776.”___Part of a series of stories exploring life in the United States as the country marks its 250th anniversary.
