SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCameroon claim first Wafcon title with victory over MalawiCameroon had previously lost in the Wafcon final in 2004, 2014 and 2016 - with all three defeats coming against Nigeria [Backpage Pix]Cameroon cruised to a 3-0 victory over tournament debutants Malawi to claim their first ever Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title.Marie Ngah Manga's close-range header put the Indomitable Lionesses ahead in the 20th minute and Naomi Eto doubled the lead with a stunning volley on the half hour mark in the Moroccan capital Rabat. The Central Africans made it 3-0 in the third minute of first-half added time as Eto rounded Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo and put the ball on a plate for striker Ngah Manga to score her fifth goal at the finals.Malawi, the lowest-ranked side at Wafcon 2026 at 153rd in the world, reached the final on the back of the attacking prowess of the Chawinga sisters Tabitha and Temwa. However, the two Scorchers stars were well marshalled by the Cameroon defence, who ensured the Southern Africans were unable to secure a fairytale ending to their unexpected run at the tournament.Ngah Manga missed a glorious chance to complete her hat-trick - and secure the golden boot outright - three minutes into the second half when she went past Sikelo but fired wide from six yards with the goal gaping. The Scorchers had their best opening just after the hour mark as Cameroon keeper Michaely Bihina saved a low effort from Tabitha Chawinga before her younger sibling turned and fired the rebound wide.Who are Malawi's Chawinga sisters? Why Cameroon keeper Bihina made waves at WafconCameroon's triumph is all the more remarkable given the Indomitable Lionesses missed the 2024 edition of Wafcon and failed to qualify for these finals, losing 3-1 on aggregate to Algeria in their second-round tie. However, the Central Africans advanced to the tournament on the strength of their world ranking after the Confederation of African Football (Caf) expanded the finals from 12 to 16 teams.Fifa president Gianni Infantino was on hand to present the trophy alongside Caf counterpart Patrice Motsepe, and Cameroon - who previously lost three Wafcon finals - also pick up $2m (£1.48m) in prize money as they become just the fourth side to win the title after Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa. Both sides will feature at the 2027 Women's Fifa World Cup in Brazil alongside fellow Wafcon semi-finalists Algeria and Morocco."We are very happy," Ngah Manga said on E4."We have been working so hard over all these years to get here. To finally be champions we are very proud."Indomitable Lionesses capitalise on errorsMarie Ngah Manga's double for Cameroon in the final moved her level with Temwa Chawinga and Barbra Banda on five goals at Wafcon 2026 [Backpage Pix]Both sides looked nervy in the opening stages, with the Southern Africans repeatedly trying to play in Temwa Chawinga with early balls forward - a tactic that worked well in their semi-final victory over Algeria. The opener came after Sikelo misjudged an Eto cross from the right and Grace Mendoua's header back across goal was tipped on to the bar by the Malawi keeper.Ngah Manga was on hand to pounce on the rebound from two yards out and Cameroon, ranked 82 places above their opponents, never looked back. The Indomitable Lionesses doubled their lead when Malawi failed to clear a corner and Eto pivoted before sending her first-time effort into the bottom right-hand corner.Sikelo was arguably at fault for the third as she decided to come off her line in an attempt to cut out Genevieve Ngo Mbeleck's through ball but Eto beat her there, got to the byline and crossed for Ngah Manga to head into an empty net from two yards.Valentine Nguele only took charge as Cameroon coach in June but has built a well-drilled side which upset Nigeria 1-0 in the quarter-finals and then beat host nation Morocco on penalties in the last four.Bihina was the star in both of those matches, pulling off nine saves against the Super Falcons and then keeping out an extra-time penalty and three more spot-kicks in the shootout against the North Africans. The 22-year-old Benfica goalkeeper was rarely called upon in the final as Malawi's challenge faded.Cameroon came close to adding a fourth late on but an Eto strike from a narrow angle was well saved by Sikele before Mendoua headed a corner across goal and wide.In injury time Indomitable Lionesses substitute Gabrielle Onguene tapped in but the 37-year-old was to be denied by the offside flag and booked for taking off her shirt in celebration.Cameroon football federation president Samuel Eto'o celebrated each goal wildly in the stands at the Moulay Hassan Stadium and the Cameroon bench and officials ran on to the pitch on the final whistle to mark their first Wafcon crown after final defeats in 2004, 2014 and 2016 - which all came at the hands of Nigeria.Decision to expand finals vindicatedMaz Farookhi, BBC World Service reporter at Moulay Hassan StadiumThis tournament was described to me before the final as 'the Women's Africa Cup of Nations of our lifetime', and rightly so.Aside from host nation Morocco, no-one would have predicted such a last four line-up or the two sides who would ultimately contest the final.Caf's decision to expand the tournament to 16 nations has proved to be the right one, allowing teams away from the likes of Nigeria and South Africa to demonstrate their qualities and bridge the gap to the continent's elite. In the end, this young generation of Cameroon players had too much for Malawi - with Monique Ngock sparkling in midfield once again to prevent passes up to the Chawinga sisters that had been so effective in their run to the final.Michaely Bihina's shot-stopping has also been a tournament highlight, as the fairytale for the team ranked 153rd in the world came to an abrupt end with some nervy defending. But both sides have next year's Women's World Cup to prepare for alongside Morocco and Algeria, who will be making their debut alongside Malawi.Farid Benstiti's Fennecs have arguably made the most marked improvement since the last edition of Wafcon 13 months ago, and there is so much to look forward to from the four guaranteed African teams in Brazil next year.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 142 Views 0 Anteprima -
linkSPORTS.YAHOO.COMAfter months of falling short, Scottie Scheffler runs away with FedEx St. Jude Championship for latest winScottie Scheffler built up a six-shot lead at one point on Sunday in Memphis to open the PGA Tour's postseason.Stacy Revere via Getty ImagesIt was only a matter of time before Scottie Scheffler pulled it off again. After a season full of near-misses and second-place finishes, the top-ranked golfer in the world absolutely ran away with the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday. Scheffler posted a final-round 66 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, which ended up giving him a massive eight-shot victory to open the PGA Tour’s playoffs. The win not only earned Scheffler a $3.6 million check, but it also solidified his spot atop the FedExCup standings with just two tournaments left on the schedule.Scheffler has been firmly at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings and the FedExCup standings throughout the year, but he’s struggled to actually win on Tour since his season-opening victory back in January. Since then, Scheffler has finished in second five times, including in his last start at the 3M Open. A pair of those runner-up outings came in the form of a playoff loss, too. While 11 top-10 finishes and a win is hard for anyone to complain about, it felt like a weird step back for the man who had dominated golf in vintage Tiger Woods-like fashion over the past several seasons. But finally this week, things clicked again. Scheffler took the 36-hole lead at the midway point of the tournament, and entered Saturday with a three-shot advantage. That was cut back to just a single stroke after his 2-under 68 on Saturday, which set him up in the final pairing with Sam Burns. But that was all that Scheffler needed to work with. Very quickly, Scheffler managed to push his lead to five shots by the time he made the turn on Sunday. He only went 1-under in his opening-nine, too, which was marred by a chip-shot that flew into the water after drilling a sprinkler head. Off the sprinkler head ... into the water 😮Scottie's bad break leads to a bogey, and his lead is down to one.📺 CBS pic.twitter.com/k3Ts1jUOpz— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 16, 2026At the time of his sprinkler head hit, his lead was down to just a single stroke. But by the time he sank a nearly 20-footer for birdie, just his third of the day at the time, that lead was suddenly six full shots. The tournament was over even before Scheffler added two more birdies the rest of the way just for good measure. The lead is now 6️⃣!Scottie Scheffler is dominating at TPC Southwind. pic.twitter.com/uGm2Xc93i6— Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) August 16, 2026Scheffler has now won 21 times in his career on the PGA Tour. All but six of those wins have come over the past three seasons, too. Scheffler is now just the fifth golfer in past 40 years to record multiple wins by eight or more strokes in his career. And his putter, which had been an issue just a few weeks ago, seemed completely fixed. He made 14 putts of more than 10 feet throughout the tournament, well more than anyone else in the field and the most in a single tournament in his career. In total, he gained more than nine shots on the green.Si Woo Kim finished alone in second at 9-under for the week. Alex Noren and Burns tied for third at 8-under.Rory McIlroy finished way back alone in 66th in what was his worst finish of the season this week, though he’s still safely into the field next week in St. Louis. Jordan Spieth, however, stumbled late to fall outside of the top-50 despite his T19 finish. There is still plenty of golf to be played before the FedExCup trophy is handed out later this month at East Lake in Atlanta. And with the Tour Championship moving away from the old staggered starting strokes format, the FedExCup title is very much up for grabs. But with the way he played this week, Scheffler has clearly found his dominant game once again after it had eluded him for months. And stopping Scheffler when he’s in that groove, as he’s proven time and again, is nearly impossible to do.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 139 Views 0 Anteprima

linkAPNEWS.COMTrump orders Pentagon to scale back joint exercises with South KoreaPresident Donald Trump gestures as he boards Air Force One at Morristown Airport, Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, in Morristown, N.J. (AP Photo/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)2026-08-16T21:37:11Z WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon on Sunday to scale back planned joint military exercises with South Korea after the Republican president said South Korea declined to help denuclearize Iran.Trump said in a social media post that the exercises slated to begin this week are costly and “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile” to North Korea, which he said “has been unthreatening and respectful” while Trump has been in the White House.“Therefore, and based on the fact that it is too late to cancel, I have instructed Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to substantially reduce the Joint Military Exercises!” Trump wrote. The 11 days of exercises involving 18,000 South Korean soldiers were designed to beef up readiness against North Korean threats.U.S. and South Korean forces were expected to practice joint operations in complex scenarios, including a live-fire exercise to test joint precision targeting and maneuver, a wet gap crossing, and distribution of prepositioned military equipment, according to the U.S. military. A day earlier, Trump posted a photo of himself standing next to North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, writing that the two leaders get along great “despite the unfriendly look on this particular picture.”North Korea’s Foreign Ministry has called the U.S.-South Korean training “a rehearsal for an aggressive war” that is triggering a different level of instability in the region. Trump met with the reclusive North Korean leader three times during his first term to discuss the country’s nuclear program, most recently in 2019. Since returning to office, Trump has expressed interest in continuing those discussions. Read More This is not the first time that Trump has sought to end the exercises. During his first term he also issued a surprise announcement that called the wargames “provocative.”“We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money, unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should,” Trump told reporters after his 2018 meeting with Kim Jong Un in Singapore.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 82 Views 0 Anteprima

linkSPORTS.YAHOO.COMRory McIlroy has rough week, posts worst finish of the season at FedEx St. Jude Championship to open playoffsRory McIlroy finished at 8-over for the week at TPC Southwind, and didn't break par in a single round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesIt was a bad week in Memphis for Rory McIlroy.McIlroy struggled his way through TPC Southwind and ended up finishing alone in 66th at 8-over for the week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. While he is safely into the BMW Championship next week — McIlroy entered the tournament at No. 12 in the FedExCup standings — it was McIlroy’s worst finish of the season by far. “Obviously [I] didn’t come in here with a ton of reps,” McIlroy said on Sunday. “Almost felt like the more the week went on, the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit.”McIlroy entered the PGA Tour’s postseason after a long break. He hadn’t competed since his T40 finish at the British Open in mid-July. And that showed.McIlroy opened the tournament with a 4-over 74, and failed to break par in all four rounds. While he was already well out of contention at this point, McIlroy just looked out of it to start play on Sunday. He opened the final round with a double bogey on the first, and then went 5-over through the first six holes. McIlroy entered the clubhouse almost dead last in both Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, too. His issues, he said, felt “overall.”“I think as well when you’re sort of working through some stuff in your swing, I certainly do sometimes start to lose awareness of the target,” McIlroy said. “You start to make the golf swing more important than the golf shots sometimes, and that’s obviously not a good thing either.”While it didn’t matter much, and he still ended the day with back-to-back bogeys, McIlroy did show some life on the back nine. He made five birdies in an eight-hole stretch on Sunday to finish up his 2-over 72. “I hit some better shots coming in for sure,” he said. “Still a few loose ones as well, but five birdies coming in … definitely there's some signs of encouragement there.”McIlroy ended up finishing 25 shots back from Scottie Scheffler, who secured an eight-shot win later on Sunday afternoon.McIlroy has four top-10 finishes on Tour this season, which includes his second straight win at the Masters back in April. He’s made the cut in all 12 starts that he’s made this season, too, and entered the week at No. 2 in the Official World Golf Rankings behind only Scheffler. While McIlroy has more than proven himself capable, he’s heading to St. Louis well off from where he wants to be. “To me it’s more about obviously the execution of what I’m doing right now, and the execution wasn’t there this week,” McIlroy said. “As I said, I’m going to have to sort of put the head down and grind from now until Thursday to try to feel like I have any sort of chance next week.”0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 54 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNFL Preseason: Which Former FCS Rookies Helped Their Chances in Week 1?HOUSTON, TX - AUGUST 13: Wide Receiver Treyvhon Saunders of the Houston Texans catches a punt as safety Noah Avinger of the Los Angeles Chargers readies for the hit during the NFL preseason game between Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers on August 13, 2026, at Reliant Stadium in Houston, TX. (Photo by David Buono/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Football is back. It may have just been the preseason but helmets were cracking and pads were popping around the NFL last weekend as pro football’s most intense, three-week tryouts officially got underway. Several young players are clawing for spots and we are just a few short weeks away from when the bell rings and rosters have to be trimmed down to 53. As hard as it is to make an NFL team, it’s often even harder for the guys coming up from the FCS ranks. A handful of them, however, threw their hats into the ring during the first round of preseason games. Here’s who made a splash:Treyvhon Saunders, WR – Houston (Colgate)It’s clear that the Texans coaching staff wants the ball in Treyvhon Saunders’ hands because on Thursday night the ex-Colgate receiver got touches in nearly every facet of the game. Saunders carried the ball, caught the ball and got his try at both kickoff and punt returns as well. When the dust settled in Houston’s 27-7 loss, he had amassed 111 all-purpose yards. The highlight of his night was a 34-yard kick return early in the second quarter. Being an undrafted rookie, Saunders will need as many chances as he can get and his preseason is off to a great start. Houston takes on Las Vegas on Thursday evening in their second exhibition game and Saunders should again see some significant action. Charles Demmings, CB – Minnesota (Stephen F. Austin)One of the top FCS prospects in this year’s class, Charles Demmings has been impressing for the Vikings this summer but he really turned it up a notch on Saturday against the Giants. Demmings, who was a fifth round pick by Minnesota, saw the field a ton and made the most of it. He got matched up with guys like Odell Beckham Jr. and held his own. Demmings’ stat line was nothing special as he recorded two tackles (both solo) but that was a testament to how quiet he kept his side of the field. As he continues to improve he’ll surely get more playing time on the back end of the Vikings defense. Cole Payton, QB – Philadelphia (North Dakota State)The Eagles may have lost to Baltimore on Saturday evening in Baltimore but quarterback Cole Payton made a real case for himself to be in the QB room behind Jalen Hurts this season. He was a fifth round draft pick in the Spring and, on the lone scoring drive, Payton used his legs and his arm to make it happen. He led Philadelphia in both rushing (45 yards on three carries) and passing (37 yards on four completions) and was responsible for the only touchdown of the night. Payton flashed his speed and elusiveness several times, a sight that NDSU fans are all too familiar with. His effort ought to have earned him more of a look this week when the Eagles take on New England. COLE PAYTON QB2 SZN.ELITE BALL PLACEMENT! pic.twitter.com/WgnmFL7Xfy— SleeperEagles (@SleeperEagles) August 16, 2026Maximus Pulley, S – Philadelphia (Wofford)The other Eagle that performed well was the former Wofford Terrier Maximus Pulley. Pulley, who is officially listed as a safety on Philadelphia’s current roster, showed out against the Ravens. He got in on eight stops, six of which were solo. That made him the second-most productive tackler on the Philly defense. Pulley was on the field a ton and was around the ball more often than he wasn’t. It was a strong start to his preseason and if he keeps stacking that kind of production for the next two weeks, it’s going to be difficult to cut him by the end of August. Rashad Rochelle, WR – Seattle (Indiana State)It’s going to be really hard for rookies at any position to find their way onto the roster in any position for the defending Super Bowl champions but ex-Indiana State pass catcher Rashad Rochelle helped his case a little on Saturday night in Seattle. The undrafted rookie did not see much action on offense but special teams was a different story. The Seahawks tried Rochelle out at both punt and kick returns and he shined in each. Rochelle racked up 92 total return yards and nearly took it the distance on a 52-yard punt runback in the third quarter. Rashid Shaheed (another former FCS guys), of course, is still going to be the main return man but if Rochelle keeps it up he might just find a place alongside him.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 88 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMScottie Scheffler Nears Tiger Woods’s Career Earnings As He Laps FedEx FieldScottie Scheffler’s dominant performance in winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis powered him past Rory McIlroy and brought him about $1 million away from catching Tiger Woods for the highest career PGA Tour earnings of all time. With the win in Memphis, Scheffler takes home $3.6 million, bringing his total PGA Tour career earnings to $119.96 million. Woods stands just shy of $121 million, while McIlroy finished 66th in this weekend’s tournament to bring his total to $116.49 million. Scheffler finished -17 on the week, eight strokes ahead of second-place Si Woo Kim. He had entered into Sunday at -13, in first place by two strokes. There was a brief scare when he had an unfortunate bounce off a sewer grate and into the water for a bogey on the par-5 third hole. However, after that, he birdied the fifth and sixth and was never seriously threatened, as he continued to compound his lead. It has been a wonky year for Scheffler, where he’s the No. 1-ranked golfer but was still a disappointment by his lofty standards. His only previous win in 2026—including majors—was at The American Express in January. Nevertheless, including this week, he finished in the top five 12 times and as runner-up five times. He’s ultimately won over $20 million on the PGA Tour this year. Next week’s BMW Championship in St. Louis—the second of three playoff events that kicked off this week with St. Jude—similarly awards $3.6 million to the winner, while the FedEx Championship to end the season has a $40 million purse—including $10 million for the winner. Scheffler would need to finish ninth or better next week to pass Woods in career earnings. Meanwhile, this was the final week to solidify position in the top 50 PGA Tour golfers. Those on the list are not only eligible for next week’s BMW, but also guaranteed entry into all of the tour’s signature events next year. The last four in were Michael Brennan, Eric Cole, Maverick McNealy, and Matt McCarty, while the first four out were Keith Mitchell, Jordan Spieth, Max Homa, and Harris English. Now the eighth LPGA player to reach 10 wins before age 24, Thitikul held off several players from her own homeland to collect the $300,000 prize. It marks the 23-year-old's third victory of the season, following an emotional win at the Honda LPGA Thailand in February and four-stroke victory over close friend Ruoning Yin in May at the Mizuho Americas Open."I would say every win it's means [because of] the sacrifice that we put in, the work we put in," said Thitikul. "I mean – you know, I've had a time that I doubt, like, what is going on in my games, and then, when you get it, you're just like, wow, this is what you're waiting for."Jeeno Thitikul completes her 2026 hat trick with a come-from-behind win in Portland 🏆🏆🏆 pic.twitter.com/7JzekVInao— LPGA (@LPGA) August 16, 2026Thitikul began the day two back at Columbia Edgewater Country Club and closed with a 64. Her ball-striking was superb, but it was her putter than sealed it for her down the stretch, edging compatriots Arpichaya Yubol (67) and Chanettee Wannasaen (63) by one stroke. Wannasaen also shot a final-round 63 to win the event three years ago after entering the field as a Monday-qualifier.Five Thai players finished in the top 8 at Portland. Wannasaen noted after the round how close they are on tour."I'm really happy when I see like them play good," she said, "because I know, like, what they went through. Like sometimes they feel burnout, same exactly as me, but we keep going, keep going."Former No. 1 Ariya Jutanugarn is the all-time leader in career wins for Thai players with 12, including two majors. Thitikul, of course, still has yet to win a major. World No. 1 Nelly Korda leads the way with four wins in 2026, followed by Thitikul, now with three. It marks the second consecutive year that Thitikul has won three times. A rookie in 2022, Thitikul has won at least twice in every season on tour except 2023.Perhaps most impressively, the consistent Thitikul now has 63 career top-10 finishes in 99 starts and $19.7 million in career earnings, putting her No. 6 on the all-time list just behind Cristie Kerr.American Sophia Schubert came into the week 125th on the CME points list. A solo fourth-place finish in Portland goes a long way toward securing her card for the 2027 season. At the U.S. Women's Amateur last week in Tennessee, Schubert served as a starter for the championship. She won the title in 2017. Rose Zhang posted her first top-10 finish on tour since late March despite suffering a back injury early in the week. The former Stanford star is trying to secure a spot on Angela Stanford's Solheim Cup team. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMScottie Scheffler back to dominant ways, wins by 8 at FedEx St. JudeMEMPHIS, Tenn. — Scottie Scheffler was back to his dominant form Sunday, turning a two-shot lead into a runaway in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He closed with a 4-under 66 for an eight-shot victory, the largest in the 68-year history at the TPC Southwind.Scheffler ended nearly seven months without winning, a season that has been marked by astonishing consistency but only one trophy to show for it from his season opener at The American Express in the California desert. This was only close for a fleeting moment. After months of little things getting in the way, Scheffler hit a bunker shot on the par-5 third that would have settled a few feet away for a tap-in birdie. But it landed on a sprinkler head, took a hard hop and rolled through the green into the water for bogey.“I was like, ‘Man, when is this going to stop happening?’” Scheffler said. That shrunk his lead to one shot over Sungjae Im. Then Scheffler made consecutive birdie putts on the fifth and sixth holes and was on his way. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMTop-ranked Scheffler powers to PGA St. Jude Championship victoryWorld number one Scottie Scheffler salutes fans after winning the PGA Tour St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee (ANDY LYONS)World number one Scottie Scheffler powered to an eight-stroke victory in the St. Jude Championship on Sunday, capturing his first PGA Tour title since January. The American launched the tour's FedEx Cup playoff series in convincing style, shrugging off an early bogey to card five birdies in a four-under par 66 for a 17-under par total of 263 at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.South Korean Kim Si-woo carded a two-under 68 to finish second on nine-under."I've had some close calls this year," said Scheffler, who had five runner-up finishes and four other top-fours during the extended dry spell that followed his season-opening victory at La Quinta, California."I feel like I kept saying at the end of each tournament 'Man, I feel like I'm playing pretty good. It's just the little things aren't going my way.'"Scheffler started the day with a two-shot lead, his first 54-hole lead in more than a year, but quickly got another unwelcome taste of little things going wrong when his shot out of a greenside bunker at the third hole hit a sprinkler head and bounced into the water for a bogey.Scheffler responded with a 10-foot birdie at the fifth, then rolled in 20-foot birdie putts at six and 11 before draining a 22-foot birdie at the 13th.A six-foot birdie at the 16th was just an exclamation point as those chasing systematically fell by the wayside.Scheffler's good friend Sam Burns, who started the day tied for second and played in the final group, took a double-bogey at the third and bogeyed the fifth. He finished with a three-over 73 and finished tied for third with Sweden's Alex Noren on eight-under.South Korean Im Sung-jae, who shared second overnight, fired a four-over 74 for a share of fifth. That was good enough to see Im move into the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings and book his spot in next week's BMW Championship.Four-time major-winner Scheffler, whose week included a superb 61 on Friday, claimed his 21st PGA Tour title. The more than six-month gap since his last victory was the longest he's gone between titles since 2023, when he won the Players Championship in March and didn't return to the winner's circle again until the Hero World Challenge in December.Although he's enjoyed a statistically superb year, missing just one cut, Scheffler admitted that couldn't compare with hoisting a trophy."Statistics are one thing, but being able to win golf tournaments is another," said Scheffler, who had nine wins in 2024 and six in 2025."This is a lot better feeling than having statistically another good week."bb/mjf0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 59 Views 0 Anteprima -

Then, in the first game of the off-season, those same silly Mariners went and won decisively and dare I say, entertainingly. Okay, so the season being over bit is hopefully obviously facetious, but the outlook remains grim nonetheless. In today’s Sunday game three against the Astros the series win is on the line for either team, but perhaps more emphatically, Seattle’s season’s hopes remain hanging onto an even thinner strip, and with but a pinky. SPORTS.YAHOO.COMMcIlroy admits concerns as Scheffler wins St JudeRory McIlroy is already assured of making to the 30-man season-ending Tour Championship [Getty Images]St Jude Championship - round four leaderboard-17 S Scheffler (US); -9 Kim (Kor); -8 ANoren (Swe), S Burns (US); -7 W Clark (US), Im (Kor)Selected others: -6 L Aberg (Swe), T Fleetwood (Eng); -5 M Fitzpatrick (Eng); -4 V Hovland (Nor), J Spieth (US); -3 H Hall (Eng); E J Rose; +3 S Lowry; +8 R McIlroy (NI)Full leaderboardRory McIlroy says "he felt lost" as he toiled to a 66th-place finish - 25 strokes behind champion Scottie Scheffler - at the St Jude Championship. While world number one Scheffler was a cut above the rest at 17 under overall as he claimed his first victory since January, more concerning for McIlory was that his eight-over total left him ahead of just two players in the first of the three FedEx Cup play-off events. The Northern Irishman, who won his second Masters title earlier this season had not played competitively since the Open Championship in July. And it told at TPC Southwind, where he failed to record a single round under par across the four days and struggled to find the sort of rhythm that will be needed if he is to claim an unprecedented fourth FedEx Cup later this month."I'm so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have a chance. I've just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit," said McIlroy, who is 13th in the season-long standings."Obviously didn't come in here with a ton of reps, (it) almost felt like the more the week went on the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit."I guess [it was] nice to shake the rust off a little bit but I'm going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete next week."To me it's more about the execution of what I'm doing right now, and the execution wasn't there this week."McIlroy's struggles were obvious particularly in from tee to green where he ranked 62nd out of 68 players for strokes gained. However, he would at least have been able to take some comfort from a seven-hole stretch on the back nine where he knocked in four birdies, albeit he finished with successive bogeys to bookend a round which began with a six on the par-four opening hole.Imperious Scheffler pulls clearThere were no such issues for Scheffler, who led by two overnight and never looked back during the fourth round. The four-time major winner outscored his playing partner and close friend Sam Burns by seven shots as he signed for a four-under 66 to get back on the winning trail. Scheffler's last victory was at the American Express Open on 27 January. And despite an early bogey, when he splashed out of a bunker and his ball hit a sprinkler head and ended up in the water, the only player to score better than the American on Sunday was Justin Rose, who carded a six-under 64 to end the tournament at level par. "I've had some close calls this year. It is always challenging playing with one of my best friends but I wanted to do my best," said Scheffler."I think I've been really consistent. That's what I'm most proud of. It's nice for it to pay off this week, this is a lot better feeling than having a statistically good week."Burns, who signed for a three-over 73 ended in a tie for third with Sweden's Alex Noren, with US Open champion Wyndham Clark and Im Sung-jae a stroke further back. The top 50 in the FedEx standings now head to Bellerive Country Club in St Louis for next week's BMW Championship. The top 30 after that event will progress to the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta which has a $40m prize fund.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 76 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COM6 performances of note from the Patriots’ 16th training camp practiceFoxborough, MA - August 3: New England Patriots running back Lan Larison and cornerback Channing Canada talk during training camp on August 3, 2026. (Photo by Danielle Parhizkaran/The Boston Globe via Getty Images) | Boston Globe via Getty Images The New England Patriots turned back the intensity on Sunday. After a full pads session on Saturday and another expected to come on Monday, head coach Mike Vrabel opted for a walkthrough. To recap it, please head over to our Patriots training camp notebook. In the meantime, here is who caught our eyes.Standout of the dayN/A: Considering that the Patriots held a walkthrough on Sunday, we will refrain from naming one individual player as today’s standout. The day was not about performance and competition, after all, but more on mental work and — from our point of view — who was part of which groups.Other performances of noteRB Lan Larison and RB Jam Miller: Larison was with the starting offensive group on Sunday working with quarterback Drake Maye as the No. 3 running back. He additionally also served as part of the top kickoff returner pairing alongside Kyle Williams. Miller, meanwhile, seemingly remains behind him on the depth chart for both roles despite a solid showing in the preseason opener.TE Tanner Arkin: Despite seeing consistent starter reps earlier in camp, Arkin did not join Drake Maye and company in the practice bubble on Sunday. He stayed outdoors with the backups providing looks for the starting defense, while only Hunter Henry and Eli Raridon went indoors.DT Isaiah Iton: With Christian Barmore still absent, Iton was the fourth defensive tackle to run with the top-level unit of Milton Williams, Cory Durden and Joshua Farmer. The Rutgers product was a dark-horse roster candidate last summer already, and could be in the process of becoming the same in 2026.ED Quintayvious Hutchins: The seventh-round rookie found himself among the first-team edges on Sunday. His group also included Dre’Mont Jones, who was back after exiting Saturday’s practice, as well as Gabe Jacas and Elijah Ponder. Maybe it’s a sign of things to come for the youngster, who has had some solid moments this summer.S John Saunders Jr: Coming off a good week that saw him catch an interception in both the joint practice with the Colts and the subsequent preseason game, Saunders Jr. was given reps with the starting defense on Sunday. He served as a fourth safety behind Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson and Dell Pettus. The Patriots will be back on Monday for another session closed to the general public. As always, Pats Pulpit will have you covered and bring you updates straight from Foxborough.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 114 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMCardinals 11, Cubs 4: Edward Cabrera gets rocked and Dansby Swanson is injured. How was your Sunday?Your recap for the Cubs’ 11-4 loss to the Cardinals Sunday is basically in the headline. Edward Cabrera returned from injury, got hit hard and didn’t have command, and then Dansby Swanson took a swing in the third inning and immediately came out of the game. I guess I could wrap things here, but… you come here for a complete recap and you are going to get one.First, I was amused by this sequence of social media posts. When Craig Counsell met with media before the game, here’s what he said about the Cubs upcoming rotation:Per #Cubs Craig Counsell, David Peterson will be moved to the bullpen for the time being as Edward Cabrera gets reinserted into the rotation.— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) August 16, 2026Five-plus hours later, after Cabrera’s disastrous outing, here’s what the media heard from Counsell:Craig Counsell said Edward Cabrera making another start when his spot comes up again will have to be discussed.— Jared Wyllys (@jwyllys) August 16, 2026Gee, Craig. Ya think?!?!?!I don’t know what was up with Cabrera. His velocity was fine. But when he wasn’t getting hit hard — four-extra-base hits including a home run in the first three innings — he was issuing walks, three of them in what wound up being a six-run fourth that put the game essentially out of reach.Personally, I’d put Cabrera in the pen and let David Peterson, who’s been really good as a starter, keep that starting spot. Before that, though, the Cubs did make an attempt to come back from a 3-0 second-inning deficit. And that’s when Swanson’s injury happened [VIDEO]. Your browser does not support the video tag. Swanson immediately left the game and was replaced by James Triantos. Triantos worked a walk, and one out later Pete Crow-Armstrong put a ball in the bleachers [VIDEO]. Your browser does not support the video tag. Well. Now it’s 3-2 and there’s at least a chance, right?Nope. In the top of the fourth, Cabrera retired the first Cardinals hitter, then loaded the bases with two walks and a single and walked in a run. After a sacrifice fly made it 5-2 and the other runners moved up to second and third, Ryan Rolison was summoned. Alec Burleson singled in a pair to make it 7-2 and then Rolison gave up a long home run to Jordan Walker and in just a few minutes’ time the Cardinals led by seven.Aaron Civale threw a pair of scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, despite loading the bases with two out in the sixth, so perhaps Civale can be counted on for multi-inning relief. His numbers with the Cubs have been quite good in that role.In the top of the eighth, Caleb Thielbar entered and allowed a hit and walk after one out, then struck out Burleson. But he wasn’t going to be allowed to face the righthanded-hitting Walker, so Trent Thornton was summoned. Welp, that didn’t work either, as Walker hit a two-run double to make it 11-2.The Cubs scored a couple of consolation runs. In the eighth, Seiya Suzuki led off with a double and went to third on an infield out. Tyrone Taylor, batting for Ian Happ, scored Suzuki with this sac fly [VIDEO]. Your browser does not support the video tag. For amusement value, Carson Kelly pitched the ninth and was throwing “fastballs” as fast as 74 miles per hour! He allowed a two-out single but did not allow a run. It’s the second time Kelly has mopped up this year and that reduced his ERA from 18.00 to 9.00, for whatever that’s worth.Miguel Amaya completed the Cubs scoring with his fifth home run with one out in the ninth [VIDEO]. Your browser does not support the video tag. Here’s the postgame update on Swanson:Per Craig Counsell, #Cubs Dansby Swanson will go on the IL with a left oblique injury. Severity not yet determined, he will get an MRI tomorrow.— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) August 16, 2026This is not good. Whatever you think of Swanson’s hitting, his defense will be missed, and oblique injuries are notoriously difficult to come back from. He might miss a month, depending on the severity. It means Nico Hoerner plays shortstop and Pedro Ramirez second base, and while those two are good defenders, it’s still a notch down from Swanson at short and Nico at second. Who will be recalled to take Swanson’s place on the active roster is uncertain, but it probably has to be either Justin Dean or Kevin Alcántara — those are the only two position players on the 40-man roster currently on option at Triple-A Iowa.A couple of final notes on this loss from BCB’s JohnW53:Going into today, the Cubs had surrendered 79 homers with any runners on base, second most to the Nationals’ 80. The White Sox and Yankees were tied for third, with 72. The combined average of the 29 teams besides the Cubs was just 59 — 20 fewer, 25.3 percent, than the Cubs’ 79.…..The Cubs have given up at least six runs in five of their last six games, including today. They also had allowed at least six runs in two of their previous five games, for a total of seven of their last 11.For the season, they have surrendered half a dozen or more in 37 games. They were 11-25 in the ones before today. So none of this is good. Here’s more not good news: The Brewers defeated the Dodgers Sunday so the Cubs are now five games out in the NL Central. And all of this is prelude to hosting a hot White Sox team that just swept the Tigers, beginning Monday evening at Wrigley Field. linkAPNEWS.COMArizona third baseman Arenado worried after leaving loss to the Braves with left trunk discomfortArizona Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado (28) follows through on an RBI grounder against the Atlanta Braves during the second inning of a baseball game, Saturday, August 15, 2026, in Atlanta. (AP Photo/Erik S. Lesser)2026-08-16T19:42:52Z ATLANTA (AP) — One day after hitting two homers, Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Nolan Arenado was fretting about a pain he’s never felt.Arenado pulled himself out of a 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning Sunday with what was described as left trunk discomfort. He only hopes it’s not too serious, especially when the Diamondbacks are vying for a playoff spot. They came into the day in a three-way tie with San Diego and Philadelphia for the final two NL wild-card spots.“I am worried,” Arenado said. “I’ve never had that before, so I don’t know what it is.”Arenado said he initially felt the pain while bending over in the batter’s box and it felt worse after he swung. He slowed up noticeably while running to first and quickly decided to leave the game.“I felt a little bit of pain in my intercostal area,” he said in the clubhouse afterward, pointing toward his left rib cage. “I don’t know. It just didn’t feel right. I haven’t really felt that before, so I had to get get taken out of the game.” With the team heading to Boston for the start of a three-game series on Monday, Arenado will have as MRI to determine the extent of the injury.“It doesn’t feel great,” he said. “I felt it before the at-bat, but it didn’t feel like pain or anything. Then, when I swung, I was like ‘ahh.’ It wasn’t getting drastically worse, but it doesn’t feel right. So I thought I would let them know.” That raised the concern of manager Torey Lovullo. Read More “The last thing he wants to do is take himself out of the game,” Lovullo said. “That’s just his mentality. He’s ferocious. He wants to play every inning of every game. When I got that news, it wasn’t great.”While expressing cautious optimism that the injury isn’t serious, Lovullo was taken aback when told by the media that Arenado described it as an intercostal issue, referring to the muscles between the rib cage.“That’s news to me,” the skipper said. “If he’s concerned, then that will ramp up my concern. We care about each other in this clubhouse.” The 35-year-old Arenado, an eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner, has made a big impact in his first season with the Diamondbacks. He is hitting .241 with 20 homers and 62 RBIs after being acquired in a salary-dump trade with St. Louis during the offseason.“He’s having a tremendous year,” Lovullo said. “I thought about giving him the day off, but he hit two home runs yesterday and had a really nice day. He didn’t want it, nor did he ask for it, but it’s one of those things where you’re got to be careful in different situations. He’s just been playing hard, but something didn’t feel right, so he spoke up.”Arenado said he’s used to the normal aches and pains at this stage of his career, especially when playing the day after a night game.“It’s a day game, so it’s hard to get going,” he said. “You always feel things that don’t feel quite loose, but you get loose as the game goes on. I didn’t feel it hitting it the cage today getting loose for the game. I didn’t really feel anything until I bent over to put my leg guard on. Then I felt a little something swinging and that was it.”Arenado was replaced by Ildemaro Vargas, who homered in the seventh to tie the game at 2, before Atlanta’s Matt Olson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame.___See AP’s full MLB coverage here0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 93 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMHarrisburg tops Renner for second straight Class A state amateur baseball titleAug. 16—MITCHELL — The Harrisburg Woodies had already learned the hard way what it took to beat Renner in the Class A amateur state tournament championship game.On Sunday afternoon, they proved they could do it again.Harrisburg defeated Renner 3-1 at Cadwell Park to claim its second consecutive Class A state amateur championship over the Monarchs in as many years. The championship is the second in Harrisburg club history, and it marks the first time since the Sioux Falls Brewers went back-to-back in 2019 and 2020 that a Class A team has repeated as state champions. The Woodies completed their championship season at 27-4.Sunday's championship game was the third consecutive season in which Harrisburg and Renner met for the Class A state title. Renner won the championship in 2024, before Harrisburg answered with a 4-3 victory over the Monarchs in last year's title game in Brandon. This time, the Woodies needed another win over their familiar opponent after falling to Renner earlier in the tournament.Renner sent Harrisburg into the elimination bracket Friday with a 6-1 victory. Rather than let the loss end their title hopes, the Woodies responded Saturday, defeating Tea 8-2 at Drake Field to earn another shot at the Monarchs."Having better energy than the last time we played them was a must coming into this one," Harrisburg center fielder Jack Sutton said. "We showed up a little bit flat on Friday, but I felt like we came into this one with a lot more energy and it spoke for itself."That energy showed immediately. Harrisburg jumped in front in the top of the first inning when Michael Oakland ripped an RBI single to score Sutton, giving the Woodies an early 1-0 lead. Harrisburg added two more runs in the second, with Sutton delivering a two-out, two-RBI double into left field to bring home J.T. Miller and Dalton Allen to give the Woodies an early 3-0 advantage that they would not give back. With the offense establishing the lead early, Harrisburg left-handed pitcher Tanner Brown took over. The former Augustana ace delivered one of the defining performances of the tournament, working all nine innings and keeping Renner off the scoreboard until the final frame. Brown threw 133 pitches, including 92 strikes, while striking out 15 of the 36 batters he faced. He allowed five hits, one run and two walks in the complete-game victory."My mindset was just not to walk guys," Brown said. "A lot of trouble happens when you walk guys, so I was just trying to get ahead and get that first strike early to keep the runners off the bags."For eight innings, Brown and the Harrisburg defense kept Renner from finding a run. The Monarchs finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth when Maddux Baggs lined an RBI double down the third-base line, scoring Renner's lone run of the afternoon."Yeah, it sucks giving up the run in the ninth, but that's baseball," Brown said. "Also, I know almost every single guy on that team, and so it was just a blast throwing against those guys."Sutton finished with four of Harrisburg's 10 hits, driving in two runs and scoring once. Allen added three hits, while Oakland collected a hit and an RBI.Baggs provided the Monarchs' only run and one of their five hits, while Chaz Palmer, Ryan Hander, Dave Borchardt and Adam Durfee each recorded one hit. Jeremiah Mauch took the pitching loss after allowing six hits, three runs and five walks while striking out five batters in six innings. Eric Brothers worked three innings of relief, allowing four hits while striking out three.Renner finished its season at 14-8.Harrisburg's Dalton Lehnen was named the Class A tournament's Keith Cutler Most Valuable Player after going 10-for-22 (.455) at the plate while posting a 1.42 ERA, recording 11 strikeouts and earning one pitching victory.Cameron Jensen, of the Tea Steam, earned the Sid Lundquist Batting Champion Award for Class A, finishing the tournament 11-for-23 (.478) across three tournament games. The Yankton Lakers received the Richard Rockafellow Sportsmanship Award. Carson Jager, of the Brookings Cubs, was honored on Saturday night as the Class A recipient of the Tony Adams Hustle Award. Now, Harrisburg has a chance to build something even bigger. Two straight state championships have turned the Woodies into the latest Class A dynasty, and Sunday's victory gave the program its second title while extending a remarkable run against the same opponent that has stood in its way for three consecutive championship games.Sutton believes there is no reason the run has to end here."It's a brotherhood, for sure," Sutton said. "Everybody hangs out with each other. We want to be with each other. We want to play all these games together. And going forward, we have so much pitching and so many guys. It's going to be a blast for years to come. We're not done."0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 78 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMAngels crush Clark to reclaim Class B amateur crownAug. 16—MITCHELL — Three years ago, when Alexandria and Clark met in the Class B amateur baseball tournament bracket, the Traders scored a significant first-round upset to send the Angels home early.Sunday afternoon, with a state championship at stake, the Halos made sure no such surprise was in store.A massive first inning set the tone, as Alexandria steamrolled Clark 12-2 in seven innings at Cadwell Park to claim the club's sixth South Dakota Class B amateur baseball tournament title overall, all since 2013, and first since 2020. The Angels finished the season with a 21-3 overall record, also complete with the Sunshine League regular-season title, District 5B tournament title."It's an awesome feeling; there's nothing better," said Alexandria player/manager Peyton Smith. "My feeling is the next one is always the best one. I love this."Four batters and nine total pitches into the game, Alexandria grabbed the lead on a Tyson Gau single that scored Dakota Munger. It was just the beginning of a first-inning avalanche that saw 14 batters come to the plate and put Clark at a 9-0 deficit before the Traders came up to bat for the first time. Along the way, the Angels chased Clark starting pitcher Hudson Fuller, who had earned credit for two wins in the tournament, after just two outs."There's no better way to get started, especially in the championship game, but we knew we had to keep our composure because they were always coming back in earlier games," Smith said. "We had to keep our foot on the gas pedal."The Angels kept the offense rolling in the second, adding three more runs to make it 12-0.On the mound, Alexandria turned to Munger for the first time in the tournament, and he was in complete control from the first pitch. He sent down the first two batters he faced on strikes as part of his eight strikeouts for the game while yielding nine hits and one walk in the seven-inning complete game."Dakota is one of the better shortstops in the state, so we just couldn't take him off of that position," Smith said. "But I told him, 'This is going to be your game,' and he delivered. He's been big for us all year, and he did it again today."For his efforts, Munger was named the Keith Culter Most Valuable Player for the Class B tournament, finishing 13-for-25 (.520) at the plate with nine runs batted in and four extra-base hits, including a home run, across five games in addition to the pitching win in the title game.Clark got on the scoreboard in the third by way of an RBI double off the bat of Zach Toben, who was honored on Saturday night as the Class B winner of the Tony Adams Hustle Award. Toben's hit scored Cooper Pommer, who came around to score again in the fifth.Alexandria was paced by the bat of Ben Wilber, who had three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Munger added three RBIs, two hits and two runs scored. Jerrod Zens and Charlie Dubanoski each tallied two hits and two RBIs.Jakob Steen led the way offensively for Clark with two hits and one RBI, while Marik Junker added two hits. Fuller was tagged with the pitching loss, as Jack Heesch and Kaleb Drenth each made relief appearances. For Clark (10-9-1), the title game defeat ended a magical tournament run. The Traders, who won just one game between June 12 and the start of the District 1B tournament on July 25, came alive in the postseason with six victories in eight games, including four wins by a single run. After getting by Wessington Springs in the opening round, Clark's performances at Cadwell Park included wins over the Cornbelt League champion Dell Rapids Mudcats, another Cornbelt power in the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks and South Central League champion Tabor.Clark was recognized as the winners of the Richard Rockafellow Sportsmanship Award. Also among the post-tournament award winners, Weston Hansen, of Dell Rapids PBR, earned the Sid Lundquist Batting Champion Award for Class B, finishing 8 of 14 for a .571 average across four games. But the day belonged to the Angels, who won their 52nd state tournament game all-time, which ranks as the fifth-most in state amateur baseball history. This story will be updated.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 103 Views 0 Anteprima -

(Photo by David Berding/Getty Images) | Getty Images We were expecting the worst when we saw safety/linebacker Jamal Adams get carted off the field in the second quarter of the Minnesota Vikings’ 13-10 preseason win over the New York Giants on Saturday afternoon at MetLife Stadium. Sadly, those expectations were confirmed a short time ago.#Vikings defender Jamal Adams, who was carted off in yesterday’s preseason game, was diagnosed with a season-ending knee injury, source says. His season is over before it began. pic.twitter.com/BEOiYggDFR— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 16, 2026Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network has confirmed that the non-contact injury that Adams sustained to his right knee on Saturday afternoon was a season-ending one. His chance to play a significant role in Brian Flores’ defense in 2026 is over before it really got started. The injury came on the play that saw the Giants score their lone touchdown of the afternoon, as Jaxson Dart broke out of the pocket and scrambled to his left before finding rookie Malachi Fields for a 15-yard touchdown. Adams was flowing towards the play and went down without being touched. He went to the injury tent after the play, and after that was taken back to the locker room on a cart.Adams had made a really nice tackle for loss on the previous defensive series. You hate to see something like this for a veteran like him, as from all reports he had really gotten up to speed on the defense quickly and was poised to be the sort of player that Flores could move around to different spots in the Vikings’ defensive scheme. There has not been any word yet on the injury to quarterback Max Brosmer, who was supposed to finish out the fourth quarter of yesterday’s game but was pulled after one series with an injury to his right wrist. Carson Wentz, who played most of the third quarter, went back into the game in Brosmer’s place and finished out the contest. When we get an update on that injury, we will pass that one along to you as well.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 41 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMSeahawks work out former Oregon State star running backCORVALLIS, OR - NOVEMBER 08: Oregon State Beavers running back Anthony Hankerson (0) reacts after scoring a touchdown during a college football game between the Oregon State Beavers and Sam Houston Bearkats on November 8, 2025, at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Oregon.(Photo by Brian Murphy/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Seattle Seahawks enter the second week of preseason with a tryout for yet another running back, one who should be familiar to college football fans in the Pacific Northwest.Former Oregon State star Anthony Hankerson, who was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise brutal Beavers team, worked out with the Seahawks over the weekend, per the NFL’s transaction wire.Hankerson was recently let go by the Miami Dolphins, who signed him as an undrafted free agent. Originally a member of the Colorado Buffaloes, Hankerson transferred to Oregon State in 2024 and became the first Beavers running back since Jacquizz Rodgers to record back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. As an extra bit of trivia, Hankerson was the main Oregon State replacement for former Seahawks draft pick Damien Martinez, who’s currently on the Green Bay Packers roster.Hankerson, who had a Pro Day but didn’t participate in the NFL Scouting Combine, did receive a minicamp invite from the Seahawks after the draft before signing with Miami. Seattle’s running back room is considerably banged up, with neither Jadarian Price nor Emanuel Wilson featuring against the Dallas Cowboys due to their respective injuries. Jacardia Wright has also been dealing with a leg injury and sat out the preseason opener, leaving George Holani, Velus Jones Jr, T.J. Harden, and Justin Jones as the available backs on the night. It remains to be seen how soon any of Price, Wilson, or Wright will be able to return for this week’s joint practice and subsequent game against the Tennessee Titans. At this point, Hankerson is highly likely to be camp/preseason fodder just to get through the rest of August, with the chance to impress enough for practice squad consideration. We’ll see if the Seahawks sign him ahead of Monday’s practice.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 9 Views 0 Anteprima -

linkSPORTS.YAHOO.COMGeorge Kittle says he has 'a chance' to play in 49ers' Week 1 opener vs. Rams coming off Achilles tearGeorge Kittle told reporters Sunday that he has “a chance” to play in Week 1 when his San Francisco 49ers take on the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. Just the fact that it’s on the table is remarkable. If it holds true, Kittle’s recovery will mark the latest milestone in the evolution of enhanced recovery from an injury that used to be considered career-threatening. Kittle ruptured his right Achilles tendon in a wild-card win over the Philadelphia Eagles in January. He missed San Francisco’s ensuing divisional-round loss to the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. If he suits up for Week 1, he will have recovered from his Achilles injury without having missed a regular-season game. Here’s Kittle on his recovery and his chances to play in Week 1 while speaking with reporters Sunday:INCREDIBLE: #49ers George Kittle says he's "Hitting top speeds" and that he has a chance to play in WK1 Vs #Ramspic.twitter.com/DdNLotcCUK— 49ers & NFL News 24/7 (@49ersSportsTalk) August 16, 2026“I have a chance,” Kittle said. “We’re running around a lot, hitting top speeds. Hopefully we’re back in pads sooner than later. Just trying to check the boxes and not be a dumbass.”Can Kittle, Jones join Jayson Tatum?Kittle and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones are attempting to join Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum in resetting expectations for athletes in their recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon.Tatum shocked the sports world when he returned last NBA season to play the final 16 games and in the playoffs for the Celtics. He sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon in the prior season’s playoffs and was initially expected to miss the entirety of the 2025-26 season and postseason. Instead, he returned with weeks remaining in the regular season to play well and with few restrictions. Tatum underwent an advanced, minimally invasive procedure with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Martin J. O'Malley. The procedure projects to reduce the risk of complications and recovery time from a ruptured Achilles' tendon and appears to have worked as intended for Tatum.Jones also underwent surgery with O'Malley. He ruptured his Achilles tendon in Week 14 in 2025 and missed the final four games of the season. He’s on track to return for the start of the regular season.Kittle didn’t undergo surgery with O'Malley. But he did with Dr. Neal Elattrache, another renowned orthopedic surgeon who regularly works with high-profile professional athletes. Kittle also sustained a clean, high tear of his Achilles tendon, which offers an optimal prognosis for recovery. The sooner Kittle can come back for the 49ers, the better, obviously — especially considering the spate of injuries on their roster. But don’t expect them to take unnecessary chances with the All-Pro’s health as they seek his return for the long-run and have an eye on making the postseason.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 59 Views 0 Anteprima

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMNorthwestern football position previews — linebackersCHICAGO, ILLINOIS - NOVEMBER 15: Braydon Brus #33 of the Northwestern Wildcats in action against the Michigan Wolverines during the first half at Wrigley Field on November 15, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images) | Getty Images We’re back again with another positional preview, breaking down each group’s quality, depth and expectations as we’re now just three weeks away from opening kickoff — still at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.Beginning last month, Inside NU has been publishing previews on quarterbacks (7/6), running backs (7/15), wide receivers (7/20), tight ends (7/28), offensive linemen (8/4)and defensive linemen (8/9).This week, we’re taking a look at the Wildcats’ linebackers.OverviewReturners: Braydon Brus (Gr.), Kobie McKinzie (Gr., Oklahoma transfer), Nigel Glover (R-Jr.), Jack Sadowsky V (Sr.), Payton Roth (R-Jr.), Jason Reynolds II (R-Sr.), Matthew Smith (R-So.), Max Mohring (Fy.), Josh Veldman (R-Fy.), Lincoln Creager (R-Fy.), Qayvier Johnson (R-So.), Miles Crutchley (R-Sr.)Losses: Mac Uihlein (graduated), Yanni Karlaftis (graduated), Nathaniel Campbell (graduated)Newcomers: Max Mohring (3-star), Amare Jordan (3-star), Parker Maiers (preferred walk-on)Unlike the defensive line, the linebackers won’t have to adjust to new coaching. Defensive coordinator Tim McGarigle leads this group for his third straight season after being promoted in Jan. 2024. A Northwestern alum (2006), McGarigle knows a thing or two about running a linebacker room — he finished his playing career at Northwestern as the program’s all-time leader in tackles, recording 545 across his time in Evanston. Last season, under his command, the defense allowed just 19.8 points per game, good for fifth in the Big Ten behind Ohio State, Indiana, Iowa and Oregon and 24th nationally. He’s also shown an ability to build some of the conference’s best talent, having coached six All-Big Ten linebackers in Evanston since being hired as the linebacker coach in 2018, including Uihlein last season, Bryce Gallagher and Xander Mueller in 2023 and 2020 Big Ten Linebacker of the Year Paddy Fisher. But McGarigle has his work cut out for him after losing Uihlein. The alum called plays for the room from the MIKE spot and landed on the All-Big Ten third team with 100 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, four interceptions and one forced fumble — one of the biggest drivers of the Wildcats’ defensive success last season. Two other big names who exited the program following the 2025 season were transfer portal pickups Yanni Karlaftis from Purdue and Nathaniel Campbell, a grad transfer from Yale. Despite high hopes, Karlaftis’s season was cut to just five games due to injury, and he finished with just 11 tackles on the year. The replacement for that production falls to a pair of players who split the reps at this position just last season. Braydon Brus, a graduate transfer fitting the mold of standouts such as Uihlein, Xander Mueller and Bryce Gallagher, won the WILL job last season. Kobie McKinzie, a transfer from Oklahoma, started seven games at MIKE and one at WILL for the Sooners, stepping into the group as the answer for the gap in the middle. McGarigle’s defense typically runs a Multiple 4-3/4-2-5 scheme that leans heavily on a MIKE and WILL as the base, with a SAM mixed in on three-linebacker downs. It’s also reasonable to expect both Brus and McKinzie’s roles to shift from game to game, similar to how Uihlein and Brus operated last season.Beyond those two, the Wildcats are banking on internal development from returners who didn’t see much of the field last season. Nigel Glover, a former four-star recruit, is the leading candidate for a breakout year. Now entering his third year in Evanston, he has struggled to get on the field. In 2025, he recorded just five tackles in 12 games. Another addition to the group is Iowa State transfer Jack Sadowsky V, who managed six tackles in his 13 games last season. Payton Roth (eight tackles in 13 games) and Jason Reynolds II round out the second and third strings as depth and special-teams contributors.Key PlayerBraydon BrusA returning starter from last year’s team, Brus is set to operate as the connective tissue for the linebacker room, and he’s shown he can put together the type of season McGarigle’s defense needs.Following a 2025 campaign in which he logged 81 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery, Brus is set for a production increase in his fifth and final season. In Northwestern’s bowl win over Central Michigan, Brus turned in a team-high 11 tackles and a pass breakup to close out the year. He beat out Karlaftis for the starting WILL job at the beginning of last season, and now inherits a leadership role with Uihlein gone.Looking back at the program’s recent history at the position, Brus looks poised to be the newest addition in a line of standout fifth-year Wildcats linebackers. Last August, McGarigle noted Brus’s work ethic, describing him as a player who’s “in [the weight room] early in the morning” and is “going to put in every single bit of effort, leaving no stone unturned.” With McKinzie next to him, Brus already has experience to lean on in the retooled room.Biggest QuestionCan the linebackers replace Uihlein’s playmaking?McGarigle’s group returns about as much continuity as a coach could ask for, but the real loss was in production. Uihlein wasn’t just a tackling machine — his four interceptions and 6.0 tackles for loss were the type of playmaking that turns a good defense into a tough one. Replacing that is more than just plugging someone in his place.McKinzie arrives with a real resume and was rated as Northwestern’s second-best transfer of the offseason by On3, behind only quarterback Aidan Chiles. Coming from Oklahoma, he’s gone against a high level of competition in the SEC. Still, he now steps into a much bigger role that includes road trips to Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon. Whether he’s able to match Uihlein’s coverage and ball production at MIKE — not just tackle numbers — remains to be seen in his first year in Evanston. And now in his third year, maybe it’s finally Glover’s time to fulfill those breakout candidate expectations. If 2026 is the year it happens, extended snaps behind Brus and McKinzie would deepen a depth chart that otherwise thins out quickly beyond the top names. If it’s not, the margin for error becomes smaller.Projected 2026 LB Depth ChartMIKE: Kobie McKinzie, Nigel Glover/Jack Sadowsky VWILL: Braydon Brus, Nigel GloverSAM/Special Teams: Payton Roth, Jason Reynolds IIDepth: Matthew Smith, Max Mohring, Josh Veldman, Lincoln Creager, Qayvier Johnson, Miles Crutchley, Amare Jordan0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 90 Views 0 Anteprima -

(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)2026-08-17T01:14:45Z PHOENIX (AP) — There’s certainly a good case to be made that Diana Taurasi is the best player in WNBA history. For Phoenix Mercury fans, that case is already closed: She’s undeniably the G.O.A.T.Taurasi was inducted into the Mercury Ring of Honor on Sunday at halftime of a game between the Mercury and Portland Fire, with the franchise retiring her No. 3 jersey and celebrating a superstar who has become synonymous with basketball in Arizona for more than two decades.“This place has made me who I am,” Taurasi said just before her banner was unveiled in the arena’s rafters. “You guys let me grow, you let me fall, you let me get back up and gave me the space to become who I am today. Through the championships, all the good times and all the bad times, the loyalty you have given me is something I will take with me forever.” Two decades of excellence in ArizonaTaurasi, 44, played for the Mercury from 2004 to 2024 and won just about every championship and award that is possible for a player. She’s the WNBA’s career scoring leader (by more than 2,000 points), an 11-time All-Star, a six-time Olympic gold medalist, a five-time scoring champion, a three-time WNBA champion, a two-time WNBA Finals MVP, the 2009 regular-season MVP and the 2004 Rookie of the Year. She said Sunday’s honor ranks up there with her biggest accomplishments.“Today’s a big one,” Taurasi said before the game. “Today feels different. When your number goes up there, you can’t use it anymore, it’s done. So if there was any little competitiveness still in me, I think today it goes up in the rafters with the number and it feels really good.”More than the sheer numbers, she’s remembered for her fierce personality that resonated in Arizona, helping turn the Mercury into one of the WNBA’s premier franchises. Taurasi was surrounded on Sunday by friends and family, including her wife Penny Taylor and their two children. Read More She said she’s lucky to have 20 years of friendships to celebrate — including her long relationship with the “X-Factor,” which is the nickname for the team’s loyal fan base. “When I walk into (the arena), I don’t see strangers, I don’t see employees,” Taurasi said. “I see friends, I see people I go to dinner with, I see people I text regularly with. This isn’t just something where I showed up and said, ‘Well, let’s see what we can do here and then leave.’”“I treated this like my extended family. I think that’s why walking in today — I’m really emotional.”Thousands of fans celebrateHundreds of fans had gathered in downtown Phoenix more than two hours before the game — many wearing the No. 3 jersey Taurasi donned for two decades — even on an August afternoon with temperatures topping 105 degrees. Some took pictures in front of a mural featuring Taurasi on the side of the arena. The announced attendance was 16,513, a sellout and a testament to how much the WNBA has grown since she debuted with the Mercury in 2004 after a stellar college career at UConn.A string of tributes flowed throughout the evening, including from Suns star Devin Booker, former teammate Brittney Griner and recent football Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Larry Fitzgerald. Three-time WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes and 23-time gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps were also in attendance.Taurasi’s name was in lights several feet off one of the baselines, with some real, live goats grazing on hay. There was also a “Goat Plush Toss” where game staff threw toy goats into the stands. There’s no doubt who fans in Arizona believe is the greatest WNBA player of all time.“When you’re in the Valley, there’s a reason you call her the G.O.A.T,” Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts said. “We all believe that, the impact that she’s made on this organization.”___AP WNBA: https://apnews.com/hub/wnba-basketball DAVID BRANDT Brandt is an Associated Press sports writer based in Phoenix. Two of Prates’ last three foes are former champions: Leon Edwards and, most recently, Jack Della Maddalena. Makhachev has stated he wants to remain active and fight before Ramadan. So a fight with Prates in January would be perfect. Garry already has a win over Prates as well, so there’s plenty left for him at the top of the division.Gabriel Bonfim vs. Sean Brady was announced live on the UFC 330 broadcast. The No. 5 and No. 6 contenders will square off in Las Vegas at the Meta Apex. The winner of this fight will look for a No. 1 contender fight. Who better to face than the last contender to fight for the title?Mackenzie Dern vs. Zhang Weili (strawweight championship)Feb 17, 2024; Anaheim, California, USA; Mackenzie Dern before fighting against Amanda Lemos during UFC 298 at Honda Center. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Connect (Reuters)Mackenzie Dern defended her strawweight title for the first time at UFC 330. After a dominant victory over Gilliam Robertson in which Dern dominated both on the feet and on the ground, the biggest challenge awaits. Despite now defending her strawweight title, Dern never actually beat the champ to become the champ. Zhang Weili vacated her strawweight title to try and become a two-weight champion. Weili fell short at 125 against Valentina Shevchenko. Now the clear move is to come back down to 115 pounds and win back the title Weili held for so long. She can walk into a title shot whenever she pleases, and no one will bat an eye. Jalin Turner vs. Mateusz Gamrot (lightweight)Mar 8, 2025; Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; Jalin Turner (red gloves) prepares to fight Ignacio Bahamondes. Mandatory Credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images via Reuters Connect (Reuters)Jalin Turner returns after a short-lived retirement and comes back with a bang. With the first left hand landed, Turner dropped and finished Kaue Fernandes in the first round. Before his retirement in 2025, Turner was a consensus top-15 lightweight in the world. Now back and looking as good as ever, ranked opposition should be next. Mateusz Gamrot is coming off a recent loss to the surging Quillan Salkilld in August 2026, which means a fight down in the rankings should be in store.Turner couldn’t have reintroduced himself better, and the matchup offers the intrigue of a striker vs. grappler matchup.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 51 Views 0 Anteprima -

SPORTS.YAHOO.COMPatriots’ Christian Gonzalez Might Have Had Issue With Robert Kraft’s CommentsPatriots’ Christian Gonzalez Might Have Had Issue With Robert Kraft’s Comments originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.Comments about contract situations often don't sit well with certain players in the National Football League. For one guy who's currently dealing with that, Christian Gonzalez, he's been somewhat quiet to the public, at least in the media, about everything going on behind the scenes. Gonzalez has shown up to practice, though he's dealing with an injury, and doesn't seem to be looking to sit out. The young man obviously wants to be paid like the best cornerback in the NFL, though he hasn't said much about it and is letting his play do the talking. The same can't be said for New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who came out earlier in the offseason and stated that he's looking to make Gonzalez the highest-paid corner in the NFL. That likely changed, at least the price, on Saturday, when it was announced that Devon Witherspoon agreed to a four-year, $132 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks. Some have thought this could speed up the process with Gonzalez and the Patriots, but the latest report suggests the former Oregon standout might be a bit upset that Kraft came out and said New England tried to make him the highest-paid corner in the league."Robert Kraft, the owner, had said publicly, 'Hey, we offered to make him the highest-paid corner in the league.' He didn't take it. I don't sense Gonzalez loved that all that much," Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported, H/T Heavy. The 24-year-old Gonzalez hasn't said he was upset with Kraft for doing this, though Fowler raises a fair point in these negotiations. Players often like to keep things quiet, so Kraft coming out and talking about it could have bothered him.More PatriotsLatest Patriots newsTom Brady's Patriots legacy: How legendary QB set new standardComplete history of Patriots championships0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 22 Views 0 Anteprima
