Report: Aston Villa star set to stay despite recent rumours
Report: Aston Villa star set to stay despite recent rumoursEmiliano Martinez to Juventus Off as Aston Villa Press Ahead With Zion Suzuki PlanJuventus will not be signing Emiliano Martinez this summer, despite fresh talks with Aston Villa that had narrowed the gap between the two clubs. According to The Athletic, Villa had received a renewed approach from the Italian side and there had been a growing sense that a deal was becoming more workable. Personal terms were not expected to present a problem for the Argentina international, but Juventus have now decided to move on to alternative options. That development leaves Villa in an intriguing position. Martinez remains one of the most influential figures at the club and his status has only been reinforced by another demanding campaign. He made 44 appearances last season as Unai Emery’s side secured a fourth-placed Premier League finish and lifted the Europa League, ensuring a return to the Champions League.Photo IMAGOZion Suzuki deal shows Aston Villa succession planWhile Juventus have stepped away, Villa have continued to shape the next phase of their goalkeeping department. The club have agreed a deal to sign Zion Suzuki from Parma, with the Japan international viewed internally as the first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026-27 season. A five-year contract through to 2031 has been lined up, with the move worth an initial €30m and potentially rising to €35m through bonuses. What stands out here is the timing. Villa accelerated their move for Suzuki as discussions over Martinez’s future progressed, yet the 22-year-old is still expected to arrive regardless of whether Martinez stays or goes. That points to a clear recruitment strategy rather than a reactive move late in the window.Villa transfer strategy remains activeMartinez, now 33, signed a fresh five-year contract in 2024 and has repeatedly been linked with a possible exit. There was significant noise around his future last summer too, when Manchester United explored a move and saw a loan offer rejected before turning elsewhere. Villa, though, have consistently shown they will only sanction major departures on their terms. His record at Villa underlines why. Since arriving from Arsenal in September 2020, Martinez has made 256 appearances and established himself as one of the defining players of this era. He also remained a major presence for Argentina at this summer’s World Cup, starting all eight matches as they finished runners-up after a 1-0 final defeat to Spain.Emiliano Martinez future still one to watchEven with Juventus out of the picture, it would be premature to dismiss the wider story. Villa are in the middle of a notable summer rebuild, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne having all moved on. Against that backdrop, the pursuit of Suzuki feels significant, and Martinez’s future may yet draw further attention before the window closes. For now, the immediate outcome is clear. Juventus have withdrawn, Martinez remains at Villa, and Suzuki looks set to arrive as part of a carefully planned transition in the Aston Villa goalkeeping picture. Our ViewAs a Villa fan, this leaves me with mixed emotions, and if I am honest, a fair bit of surprise. On one hand, keeping Emiliano Martinez feels like a huge boost. He is one of those players who gives the whole side edge, personality and belief. When you are going back into the Champions League, that sort of presence matters massively. At the same time, the Zion Suzuki move clearly tells us the club are thinking ahead. That is probably the sensible thing to do, even if it feels strange when Martinez has still been performing at such a high level. Supporters get attached to big personalities, and Martinez has been central to so many major moments in recent years, so any hint of an exit is always going to feel unsettling. What really catches the eye is that Suzuki is coming in regardless. That says Villa are planning for the medium term and not waiting to be forced into change. From a supporter point of view, that should probably be reassuring. It suggests the recruitment team and Emery are trying to stay ahead of the curve.Still, I do not think many Villa fans expected this to become such a live issue again. After another strong season, you would naturally assume Martinez stays as the established No 1. If he does remain, Villa suddenly have experience and succession planning in place together, and that could be a very strong position to be in.Source: Athletic

Exit-bound Barcelona midfielder turns down Saudi Arabia option as he eyes top-level challenge
Exit-bound Barcelona midfielder turns down Saudi Arabia option as he eyes top-level challengeMarc Casado’s future appears certain to be decided away from Barcelona, but a move to Saudi Arabia is not currently part of the midfielder’s preferred plan.According to SPORT, the Barcelona academy graduate is open to leaving the club but wants to remain in European football, where he believes he can continue competing at the highest level and play an important role for his next team.As a result, the Saudi Arabia route suddenly becomes uncertain, despite Barcelona’s interest in a financially attractive sale and continued efforts from Al-Hilal to sign the midfielder.Casado open to Barcelona exit but…The Barcelona sporting management is looking to accelerate departures as they attempt to clear space in the squad and improve their salary situation.Casado is reluctant to move to Saudi Arabia. (Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images)Casado is among the players expected to leave, and even the midfielder is willing to consider a departure, although he wants control over where his next move takes him.A transfer to Saudi Arabia had emerged as a possible solution, particularly because of the financial benefits it could offer Barcelona. But Casado does not appear convinced by the prospect. The midfielder’s priority is to join a club where he can become an important player and work under a coach who has genuine faith in him.His preference is to remain in Europe and continue playing at a high competitive level rather than accept a move primarily driven by the size of the transfer fee.Al-Hilal preparing improved bidAl-Hilal are preparing a fresh move for Marc Casado. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images)As such, Al-Hilal remain interested and are preparing another attempt to convince both Barcelona and the player. The Riyadh-based club have already made approaches worth around €30 million and are now considering an improved proposal before the transfer window closes, after knowing that Barcelona want at least €40 million for the player.Meanwhile, Casado has received several offers and has yet to make a final decision on his future, which has encouraged Al-Hilal to continue their pursuit. However, the biggest obstacle may not be Barcelona’s valuation, but the midfielder’s desire to continue his career in Europe.

USA Gymnastics used the Winter Classic in Springfield, Illinois, the Elite Challenge in Wichita, Kansas, and the USA Gymnastics Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as qualifying events.Athletes earned qualifying scores at each competition, with their two highest scores combined to determine final team standings. Matus held Team USA positions in Tumbling and Double Mini after the Winter Classic, maintained those standings through the Elite Challenge and secured both spots at the national championships in Tulsa.National championship season delivers Team USA berthMatus finished the USA Gymnastics Championships with four medals in four events:Tumbling: Gold medal and national championshipDouble Mini: Bronze medalIndividual Trampoline: Bronze medalMixed Synchronized Trampoline: Bronze medalThe results placed Matus on the podium in each individual Trampoline & Tumbling discipline she entered. Kushner sits with Netanyahu to talk Gaza after 2-hour meeting with Hamas
Palestinians remove iron from the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli airstrikes during the war with Hamas, repair and recycle it for construction, building tents or selling it, in Gaza City, Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026. (AP Photo/Jehad Alshrafi)2026-08-17T08:48:43Z JERUSALEM (AP) — Mideast negotiator and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner was meeting Monday with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the premier rejected the 15-point, U.S.-backed road map to move the truce deal forward in Gaza. In the latest round of meetings, the U.S. is angling for Israel’s approval of the road map. There is a lot at stake, including the lives of some 2 million Palestinians in Gaza, the reconstruction of the demolished enclave and future control over the territory. Hamas says it has agreed to the road map, which includes disarmament, and the group is urging mediators and the U.S.-created Board of Peace to “compel” Israel to sign on as well. But Israel, which under the road map must withdraw from Gaza, says Hamas must fully disarm before any Israeli withdrawal will occur.Israeli troops occupy about 60% of the strip and Netanyahu has previously threatened to advance. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Board of Peace Director Nickolay Mladenov were also in the meeting with Netanyahu, according to a source familiar with the plans and a diplomatic source. Both spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a closed-door meeting. Meeting follows Kushner conversation with HamasThe meeting comes after Kushner spent over two hours meeting Sunday with Hamas chief Khalil al-Hayya in Egypt on disarmament, according to a regional official and a Hamas official, who both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters. Officials from mediating countries Egypt, Qatar and Turkey also were there. The Hamas official also said the Hamas leader demanded Israel halt its attacks on Gaza and withdraw to the so-called “yellow line” dividing the territory before beginning implementation. The yellow line was never precisely defined. Israeli forces have moved beyond it and now control about 60% of Gaza. In May, Netanyahu said the next step was to move to 70% control, with Israel “tightening the grip” on Hamas “from every direction.” Read More Regional neighbors increase pressure on IsraelSeveral regional powers including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates issued a statement Sunday condemning Israel’s rejection of the road map, saying, “Israel now bears responsibility for obstructing the efforts to bring peace in Gaza.” Other signers included Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia and the ceasefire mediators. The foreign ministers’ statement called on the Board of Peace and the U.S. to take “immediate and concrete measures” to keep any party from obstructing the plan’s implementation. The White House referred questions about Kushner’s meetings to the Board of Peace, which did not immediately comment. The Tony Blair Institute also did not comment.Under the road map, Hamas would hand over weapons to the Palestinian technocratic committee meant to oversee daily operations in the territory. The committee has not yet entered Gaza. But Hamas has linked the surrender of its heaviest weapons to the creation of a Palestinian state and the road map entails the creation of a “credible pathway toward achieving Palestinian self-determination and statehood,” something Israel’s current government rejects.Until the road map is agreed to, other elements of the ceasefire are on hold, including reconstruction and the deployment of international forces to separate Israeli forces from committee-controlled areas. Netanyahu faces a challenging election on Oct. 27 as he tries to hold onto power with a coalition that includes ministers taking a harsh line on Gaza and it’s not clear whether he will take decisive steps on the ceasefire before then. Also coming up is the anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel that sparked the war.___Frankel reported from Jerusalem and Magdy from Cairo. Spurs' Vicario set to join Juventus on loan
Guglielmo Vicario has five international caps after making his Italy debut in 2024 [Getty Images]Tottenham have accepted a loan offer from Juventus for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, which includes an option to buy.The Italy international, 29, is set to travel to Turin to complete a move back to Serie A, with a non-mandatory £8.6m purchase option included in the deal.It follows Juventus' attempts to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, which has collapsed as Villa close in on signing Parma's Zion Suzuki.Martinez was known to have an injured finger and is currently unavailable for selection.Vicario, meanwhile, lost his place in the Spurs side under manager Roberto de Zerbi, who promoted understudy Antonin Kinsky to the role last season.De Zerbi has since confirmed Kinsky will remain his first-choice goalkeeper for the new season, with Martin Dubravka signed on a free transfer from Burnley in July to provide competition and cover. It is part of a club record spending spree by the north London club, who have signed six players while targeting two further attacking additions. They have also sold, loaned out or released several former first-team players, including captain Cristian Romero, England international Djed Spence and Yves Bissouma.Vicario made 117 appearances for Spurs after joining from Empoli for £17.2m in 2023.Latest Tottenham news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Tottenham - what do you want to know?

Man City in advanced talks for midfielder Bouaddi
Ayyoub Bouaddi started all five of Morocco's games at the World Cup [Getty Images]Manchester City are in advanced talks with Lille over a move for Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. The Premier League side want to conclude the transfer this week after agreeing to sell Rodri to Barcelona. It is understood Lille value the 18-year-old at 100 million euros (£85.6m).Bouaddi impressed at this summer's World Cup - starting all of Morocco's five matches in their run to the last 16 - after a starring role in Lille's Champions League victory over Real Madrid in 2024 announced him on the big stage. He functions as a deep-lying conductor - much in the same vein as Rodri - and would complement summer signing Elliot Anderson, who is more of a box-to-box midfielder.Bouaddi has played 88 times for Lille since making his debut in October 2023, three days after his 16th birthday, and helped them finish third in Ligue 1 last season.Spain captain Rodri is set to complete a £65m move to Barcelona in the coming days on a four-year contract. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has made 298 appearances across seven trophy-laden seasons at City after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a then club record £62.8m.The 30-year-old missed much of the 2024-25 campaign with a serious knee injury, and parts of last season were disrupted by a hamstring issue. However, he was back to his best at the World Cup in the summer, leading Spain to their second title and being named player of the tournament. It remains to be seen how a successful move for Bouaddi would impact City's interest in Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, but well-placed sources maintain that City manager Enzo Maresca retains a strong interest in the Argentina midfielder.Barcelona agree £65m deal to sign Rodri from Man CityLatest Manchester City news, analysis and fan viewsAsk about Man City - what do you want to know?

Money, AI and the race for talent: Inside college football's Build-A-Roster convention
NASHVILLE – The biggest ballroom in this downtown Nashville hotel is overflowing — standing-room-only — and College Football Hall-of-Famer Mack Brown is holding court.Brown — the last coach to win a national championship at Texas and North Carolina’s winningest coach — is explaining why fifth place beats second. On the talent-acquisition trail, that is.At this moment, he's the champagne cork to the seventh annual Personnel and Recruiting Symposium — a 48-hour event spanning parts of three days. For 1,600 staffers from 160 schools it's the networking equivalent of the NCAA transfer portal they navigate and the social equivalent of the record-label parties that dot this city during Country Music’s awards season. What is the @FBRecSymposium, going on now here in Nashville? It’s GMs, personnel staffs from 160 colleges, 25 @NFL & vendors from all sectors. It’s THE event in that realm & networking like recruiting in the Transfer Portal: hypersonic. pic.twitter.com/4LytEkfSqG— John Brice (@JohnDBrice1) August 4, 2026“I've been doing this 50 years; they've been doing it (the recruiting process) six months,” Brown tells the crowd. “And so many times, people in this room or assistant coaches didn't want to ask hard questions because you are afraid you'll get the wrong answer. I wanted to get an answer. I'd a lot rather be fifth than second. If you are second, you lose the next two, so I either wanted to get him or get out.“So, I ask questions. We had at Texas once, a mother said she was from Indiana. Sally (Brown’s wife) said, 'What about distance from home?' She said, 'Oh, he's not going to go far.' I said. 'Well, ma'am, we're not moving.' So, he's out. What are we wasting time for? You just asked her and she's not going to let him go. We’re out. That’s just facts.”FIRST LOOK: Inside college football's newest, most expensive stadiumHOMECOMING: Why BYU’s Kalani Sitake went home — for the first time since birthSome of the sport's top firms and agencies host everyone from college football general managers to showcase-game representatives to media and rival agents. Events turn the night of Monday, Aug. 3, into the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 4, and they repeat that pattern into Wednesday, Aug. 5.The event’s substance tracks at a similarly satisfying level, like a Deep South meat-and-three.A year after touting representatives from all 32 NFL teams, 25 franchises return for the 2026 iteration. The hallway outside the ballroom is lined with dual-sided vendor booths, spanning longer than a 100-yard kickoff return and spilling down the stairs into the registration area. Ghost Mail. Hudl. Monarch. Sportability. Tracker. Nutritional offerings and travel services.A.I. in football is literally centerstage when former Pittsburgh Steelers executive, Karim Kassam, now vice president of sports intelligence at event-sponsor Teamworks, presents the latest developments. There are more players than ever for these college programs to scout in this transfer portal era, but stretching finances – in some instances, reducing staff sizes — also maximize demands on personnel.“With 5,000 players in the transfer portal, there is not enough time to do this thoroughly; NFL teams can get away with this because they only look at draft-eligible players,” says the Harvard-educated Kassam, founder a decade ago of the Steelers’ analytics and research approach. “They ignore FCS altogether, and for the most part, they know everyone they need to scout a full year in advance.“I can extrapolate this trend for you. You are responsible for anyone who steps foot on a college football field anywhere in the country. The transfer portal can't be scouted the same way. You can ask your A.D. for a 25-person scouting department. Good luck. Or we can look to technology to find more efficient ways. It's worth thinking about what this future is going to look like.”He has suggestions.“What if scouts spent an hour a day giving autonomous agents little scouting tasks?,” Kassam asks. “Digital scouting assistants. Agents that can perform scouting tasks not as well as a seasoned scout, but some of them pretty well.“You're not going to stop watching film. You will have to check their work. If you're a scout, if you're a recruiter, what would you do with a dozen digital assistants great at some things and faster than you can dream of? I think it's worth asking the question. And I'm painting this picture and I can see it because it's not that far away. It's grounded in what we're doing today.”Panel discussions rule the event — particularly on contract negotiations, trends and player evaluations.General managers from Arkansas, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Texas, Texas Tech are among panelists; moderators from agencies and search firms, with backgrounds in football, such as Sean Magee, Ed Marynowitz, Pat Suddes and Clint Stein among them.Mini-breakout sessions implore these personnel pros to pose questions:“How does the front office manage the relationship between the head coach and the athletic department when their priorities diverge?”“How involved should the assistant coaches be in deciding what to pay players, and how is that communication with the front office managed?”“How do you balance the urgency of closing on a recruit or a portal target against the discipline of making sound fiscal decisions within budget?”The University of Cincinnati holds a standing meeting every Tuesday to discuss contract developments, trends in the marketplace and what that school’s administration is hearing in regards to potential rules changes, modifications or other potential legal issues. An executive from another school, name withheld due to the sensitive nature of the discussion, sheds insight on trouble-shooting approaches.“Administrations will always find ways to say no,” says the SEC executive. “You have to help them find ways they can say yes.“So, don’t just bring problems, bring solutions, come with compromises. Be ready to meet that middle ground so that you can take care of your priorities while understanding their perspective as well.”Billy High, Tennessee’s top roster-construction expert and former North Carolina personnel head, explains the Vols’ approach in securing intra-departmental alignment.“We talked at the beginning, really defining what the goals are in that athletic department and football program,” High tells the Competing Stakeholder Interests panel. “From a budgetary standpoint, being clear early and often. The communication piece is so key.“There are so many, especially now with revenue-share, so many different entities that are involved. You have to have that regular communication.”High issues one final message about finding common ground.“Coaches are always going to want more money, athletic departments are always going to want to pay less money,” he says. “But at the end of the day, the goal or shared interest is winning.”With every college program’s team in camp, and most NFL camps already two weeks old, the Aug. 5, schedule finishes before lunch.Still, it’s an overflow-crowd for the Tips for Young Evaluators session featuring NFL insight and the perspectives of top college personnel executives, Clemson’s Kevin Kelly — a 20-year NFL personnel veteran — and Georgia’s Will Myers, a national award-recipient for his work on the Bulldogs’ 2025 roster.During sessions from the previous day and that morning, attendees learn that in the past two years of the NFL Draft, “there have been more zero-star players drafted every year than five-stars; 76 0-stars to 49 five-star drafted in that time.”“About 550 to 600 signed as undrafted rookies each year; we see out of them 280 were 0-star prospects,” a panelist says.Kelly goes in-depth on arm length, how it factors into both NFL Draft evaluations and positional recommendations; he notes Clemson also measures hand-sizes for all of its prospective players.Myers points to the Rueben Bain exception — the ex-Miami Hurricanes consensus All-American and 2026 NFL Draft No. 15 selection.“Georgia, we are a height-weight-speed team,” Myers says. “A short-armed defensive lineman, why does it matter if it’s Rueben Bain if he’s explosive? A short-armed D-lineman loses faster, his pads are captured faster from a long-armed offensive lineman. He wins dirty, his pads are dirty; Rueben Bain is the exception.“That .031 seconds longer it takes because his pads are hard to capture [because his arms are longer], that matters. I’ve learned a lot about exceptions; we have some outstanding players that don’t fit the criteria and threshold. Luke Kuechly is probably the best linebacker I’ve watched. He had short arms. D’Angelo Ponds at Indiana, outstanding.“But, you have to ask: Does it stop them from doing something he needs to do?”Perhaps that answer rests in 2027, when this symposium convenes football’s roster-building leaders yet again. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Money, AI and the race for talent: Inside college football's Build-A-Roster convention

NFL fans react to Von Miller signing with the Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys may not have made a “splash signing” in the traditional offseason sense, but make no mistake: this is a significant moment for both the franchise and Texas A&M’s football community.Von Miller has been open for years about wanting to play in Dallas. The Cowboys, meanwhile, have been searching for a seasoned pass rusher who could stabilize the edge, mentor their young defenders, and bring championship‑level experience into the locker room. For now, it feels like a match made in football heaven, with both sides getting exactly what they’ve been looking for.Whether this partnership becomes a long‑term success story or simply a short‑term boost remains to be seen. Miller is entering the twilight of his career, and the Cowboys are navigating a roster that’s shifting under them. But the move is undeniably noteworthy not just because of Miller’s resume, but because of what his presence represents for a team trying to stay competitive in a loaded NFC.And as expected, the moment the news broke, NFL fans across the league jumped in with their reactions. Cowboys fans celebrated the addition of a future Hall of Famer. Aggies fans took pride in seeing one of their greatest defensive players land with one of the most visible franchises in sports. Rival fanbases chimed in with skepticism, jokes, and hot takes about Miller’s age, his production, and whether Dallas is getting the “real” Von Miller or just the name. That’s the beauty of a move like this: it doesn’t just shift a depth chart. It sparks conversation, debate, and emotion across the NFL landscape. And when a player of Miller’s stature changes teams, especially to a franchise as polarizing as the Cowboys, the reaction is always loud.Von Miller confirms the newsDallas ! At “Quasi-Public” Private Schools, 100% of Students Get Tuition Vouchers. There’s Almost No Accountability.
Atlas Preparatory Academy, a private school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Every student relies on taxpayer dollars from one of the state’s four voucher programs to pay all or part of their tuition. Caleb Alvarado for ProPublica At some point, my reporting colleagues and I began referring to them as the “100% schools.” We were following the money that flows from states’ public coffers into private schools through vouchers when we noticed a subset of educational facilities where tax dollars cover all or a big part of the tuition for every student. In essence, these were schools that were funded like public schools but didn’t operate with the same oversight or transparency. Our reporting found that these types of private schools exist throughout the country and that in Wisconsin — where I’m based — there were 39 that fell into that category during the most recent school year. Together, they were educating 7,923 children and taking in roughly $87 million from vouchers offered by the state. Atlas Preparatory Academy in Milwaukee was a 100% school in my city that had low test scores and declining enrollment while also receiving more than $4.3 million in voucher money for 357 students in grades K-12. It was one of the first schools I dug into, and immediately some of the facts I unearthed in public documents made me curious. There was, for instance, the money being made by its board chair, who also appeared to serve as a school administrator. His compensation was more than $150,000 in 2024. This dual role would be prohibited at a traditional public school in Wisconsin, though there are no such rules for private schools. In another transaction that would raise alarm in a public school setting, the same board chair’s accounting firm received tens of thousands of dollars from the school for accounting and consulting. During my reporting, it became clear that the school’s operations were not only discordant with public school policies but with basic governing standards for nonprofits, experts told me. More than a decade ago, a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction research paper on what it called “choice schools” asked: “When is a private school really a public school?” Though that question still resonates today, public officials supporting vouchers have yet to provide a clear answer. Help ProPublica Report on Education Have you had trouble finding a school or using a voucher-style program? Do you have concerns about schools — public or private — in your area? Help us understand how families across the country are navigating their school options. Share Your Experience Nor has there been any progress in Wisconsin or elsewhere in lining up the standards of private and public schools on a range of issues, even with the spectacular growth of private schools funded by taxpayer dollars. Voucher schools, for instance, are not required to serve all children with disabilities. Public schools are. Another major difference is transparency. In Wisconsin and elsewhere, information about public schools — good, bad or mundane — can be gleaned through open meetings, district YouTube channels and robust websites with detailed agendas, minutes, reports, statistics and information about enrollment, curriculum, special education services and more. Districts have to abide by Wisconsin’s open records law, meaning that reams of records are available to anyone who formally requests them. Not so for the private schools. Voucher schools must, by law, have at least two opportunities a year for parents to meet with the governing board. But the schools do not have to make those meetings accessible to the general public. In many states, private schools also don’t have to administer standardized tests or report those scores — in sharp contrast to the mandates for public schools. Wisconsin is different because it does require both students using vouchers and public school students to be tested, though parents can and do opt out. In recent years, Atlas Prep has fared poorly on the state’s report card for schools, garnering the lowest rating: “fails to meet expectations,” or one star out of a possible five. Not far from Atlas, Bay View High School, a public school, also has earned only one star on the state report card. Its website connects the public to the school’s improvement plan — its strategy to reduce dropouts and improve school culture — as well as information about local school council meetings and discipline methods, and about its science, technology, engineering, arts and math programming. The Atlas Prep website includes a tab labeled “Build Your Own Curriculum.” When you click on it, nothing loads. Though every student at the 100% schools we looked at relies on public funds for tuition, the money does not necessarily make up the institution’s total budget. The schools can take in additional revenue from investments, fundraising, grants or other means, but they are heavily dependent on tax dollars to maintain operations. “If the choice schools are really some kind of quasi-public schools, then in keeping with national efforts to turnaround struggling schools, it may be necessary to subject low-performing choice schools to financial sanctions, turnaround efforts or even closure,” the state Department of Public Instruction suggested in its research paper. That was back in 2011. Those types of accountability measures still do not exist. Some key financial documents are available, however, for Wisconsin voucher schools — if you know where to look. Read More How to Research Private Schools Like an Investigative Reporter Annual IRS information filings for many nonprofit schools are easily obtainable through ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer page. And independent financial audits, required by the state, are available through the state Department of Public Instruction. I requested those for a handful of Wisconsin’s 100% schools, and I visited four. One warm day in June, I stood in the lobby of one such school in Milwaukee, near a large fish tank. I’d sought days earlier to contact the woman running the school. An audit showed she was paying her own company rent for the building ($128,000 in one recent year). She put me off. “I’m not interested, ma’am,” she said via a phone in the foyer. “Please do not call us back again.” On the other side of town, I rang the bell at Atlas Prep’s high school building and asked to speak to the executive director, Michelle Lukacs. I was informed she was headed to a meeting and could not speak with me. By then, I was digging into Atlas’ finances, a process that would last several weeks and continue into July. Over multiple emails, I shared with Lukacs what I was learning, including the compensation of the board chair, Steven E. Menden. A licensed certified public accountant, Menden had compiled the school’s IRS filing since its formation in 2001. At times since then, Menden has been listed on the school’s website as “board advisor.” His daughter, Kaitlyn Menden, was also among the school’s most highly compensated employees in 2024. Her package was $127,674 in salary and benefits for a job in “business services.” (In an email to me, she described her role as wearing “many hats” beyond that, citing human resources duties, “oversight of the school’s technology hardware and cloud resources” and “special projects.”) In the past couple of years, records show, Steven Menden has taken on the role of board chairman. The fiscal year 2025 IRS form showed Menden putting in a 40-hour workweek for Atlas and earning $132,505 in pay plus $19,916 in additional benefits. What’s more, his accounting firm, Menden & Associates, had an $87,250 contract. Lukacs defended the school’s compensation practices, noting in an email: “Every person on our team, regardless of their role, earns their compensation and is not overpaid.” She explained that Menden is not compensated for his board service but for “Executive Management Services.” It would be forbidden for a public school board member in Wisconsin to also have a district management job under a legal doctrine regarding roles that are “incompatible.” “In essence, one cannot supervise oneself, which would include hiring and firing and disciplining oneself,” said Dan Rossmiller, executive director of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards. State law governing public officials also prohibits school board members from having a private interest in any contract over $15,000 that they bid for, vote on, negotiate or participate in. Violators can be charged with a low-level felony. There is no similar law that pertains to private school operators in Wisconsin. In an email to me, Menden explained how the Atlas board handles potential conflicts of interest. “Any conflicts of interest for either related or unrelated parties are resolved in favor of Atlas Preparatory Academy as outlined in our IRS mandated Conflict of Interest Policy,” he wrote. “This means that conflicted persons recuse themselves from the situation and do not vote or participate and the final decision that is made is strictly in the best financial interest of the school.” This organizational structure does not comport with best practices for the governance of a nonprofit organization, experts told me. “Board members are volunteers, and best practice is unambiguous that they should not simultaneously hold paid staff positions at the school they oversee — doing so collapses the separation between governance and management that gives a board its purpose in the first place,” said Chelsea Cross, a vice president at City Forward Collective in Milwaukee. City Forward is a nonprofit group that champions high-quality school options for students and has been critical of the performance of the Milwaukee Public Schools. Atlas Prep’s IRS filing indicated that Lukacs, the full-time executive director, earned $175,000 in salary and benefits and also had a board position. A third board member is listed as working only one hour a week for no pay. In a public school setting, Lukacs’ situation would be akin to a district superintendent also sitting on the school board — an arrangement that would raise issues over proper checks and balances since superintendents typically are hired by and report to the school board. Said Cross: “With 2/3 of its governing board also on the payroll — including the very executive the board exists to evaluate — Atlas Prep’s board cannot meaningfully hold its own leadership accountable.” Lukacs disagreed with that assessment. “This is a false statement,” she wrote in an email, saying that Atlas board members “model strong personal leadership showing integrity, confidence and consistency in their actions and decision making.” She told me she does not vote to approve her own salary “or vote in any other situation where a conflict of interest exists.” And she noted that countless hours have been invested at Atlas Prep in improving curriculum and student support. “While our standardized test scores do not yet reflect the level of achievement we aspire to, our staff has remained steadfast in its commitment to continuous improvement,” she wrote. I had asked Atlas Prep twice for a copy of the school’s conflict of interest policy, which Menden had mentioned. As of mid-August, I had not received it. I also requested a copy of the school’s contract with Menden’s accounting firm. I did not receive that either. At a public school, such contracts would be subject to open record laws. I easily found a link on the Milwaukee Public Schools website to a decade’s worth of contracts for school nurses, mental health services, fitness instructors, interpreters, color printers, portable toilets, busing, professional development and so on. But Atlas does not post those records online. It doesn’t have to. At Atlas Prep, the school’s executive director also serves on the board that oversees the director job. At a public school, these dual roles would not be allowed, but that restriction doesn’t apply to Atlas, even though it depends on public money. How India’s WTC final hopes take a hit after Bangladesh's historic win over Australia: Explained
Bangladesh pulled off a nine-wicket win over Australia in Darwin on Sunday, giving them one of the biggest wins in Test cricket and leaving Australia's 20-Test schedule over the next 12 months off to a difficult start.Cameron Green's maiden Test century at home delayed the result, but Bangladesh had already taken control of the match after three-and-a-half days of cricket on a Marrara Stadium pitch that offered a good contest between bat and ball. The result was unexpected given the records of the two teams. Australia had reached the last two World Test Championship (WTC) finals and won 18 of their previous 23 Tests. Bangladesh, meanwhile, had lost 22 of their previous 26 Tests outside Asia and had suffered innings defeats against Zimbabwe and a Cricket Australia XI in the previous two months.Yet Najmul Hossain Shanto's side produced a nine-wicket win in their first Test in Australia since 2003. It was Bangladesh's first long-format tour of Australia in 23 years and one of the biggest results in the country's 40-year history in international cricket. The result has also changed the WTC picture. Before the Darwin Test, Bangladesh were fourth in the WTC standings, one place above India. However, they had played only four Tests at that stage — losing 0-1 to Sri Lanka and beating Pakistan 2-0 at home — so their position was largely viewed in the context of the small number of matches they had played.Their win in Darwin has now pushed Bangladesh to 66.67 per cent, while India remain on 48.15 per cent.India had entered the Sri Lanka series after drawing 2-2 in England and beating the West Indies 2-0 at home. Their progress was then checked by a 0-2 home series defeat to South Africa. The two Tests in Sri Lanka were expected to be an important part of India's push for a place in next year's WTC final. But rain disrupted the second day of the opening Test in Galle after India had made a strong start, while more rain is forecast over the next three days.Bangladesh's win in Darwin has widened the gap between them and India to more than 18 percentage points. For India, the remaining WTC schedule leaves little room for dropped points. After Sri Lanka, they travel to New Zealand for two Tests before hosting Australia in a five-Test series.New Zealand have proved difficult opponents for India in their own conditions, while India may need something close to a 4-0 series win against Australia to remain in contention for the WTC final. The current WTC standings are:Australia — 77.77%South Africa — 75%New Zealand — 72.22%Bangladesh — 66.67%India — 48.15%

YouTube Gold: The Greatness Of Bo Jackson
ANAHEIM - JULY 11: Bo Jackson #16 of the Kansas City Royals plays in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 11, 1989 at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California. Jackson was named MVP of the game. (Photo by David Madison/Getty Images) | Getty Images Michael Jordan played in the NBA for 15 seasons between 1984 and 2003, and was widely considered one of the greatest athletes of his generation. But he wasn’t the best. That would have been his contemporary, Bo Jackson. Jackson played both professional baseball and football, and was an All-Star in each. His professional baseball career started in 1986, and his NFL career in 1987. His career – both of them – were full of legendary moments. Negro Leagues legend Buck O’Neill said that when Jackson hit the ball, he connected with a ferocity that he had only ever heard from two players: Babe Ruth and Josh Gibson. Then there was the wall running and the insane passes. In football, he pancaked Brian Bosworth so ferociously that it destroyed Bosworth’s reputation. But there are more stories, as we learn in this video with Jeff Pearlman. There are several interesting anecdotes, but the one that blows us away is him hitting a fly ball so high that he nearly reached third base before it came down. Several people verify this, including one of the opponents. Pearlman calls him the greatest athlete of all time, and, really, it’s hard to argue. ‘Furious’ cycling community calls for change after death of 19-year-old rider Finlay Tarling
The cycling community has rallied around the family of 19-year-old Finlay Tarling, who was killed in a collision at the Volta a Portugal, with the professional riders’ union “speechless and filled with anger” at his death as it called for a serious overhaul of racing safety measures. The Welsh teenager was hit by a non-race vehicle on stage eight of the race last Friday and died shortly after the crash. The vehicle, which was driving the opposite way to the riders, was not prevented from getting onto the course despite the race having not entirely passed that section of road. The Volta a Portugal, like many races below the level of grand tours including the Tour de France, does not fully close the roads for each stage but uses a rolling roadblock designed to protect the race convoy as it travels. Police and race organisation vehicles enforce temporary closures of certain sections until everyone involved in the race has passed through, before moving to the next section. Carlos Catanario, of the National Republican Guard (GNR), told RTP that Tarling was off the back of the peloton and riding downhill to catch up, with the broom wagon - the final vehicle in the race convoy - behind him. Catanario said the driver involved in the collision had been waiting at the roadside for the race to pass and asked bystanders whether he could drive onto the road, then did so before the broom wagon had gone past, signifying the end of the rolling roadblock. Catanario said the police escort “could not keep up” with Tarling and that there was no security presence preventing the non-race vehicle driver from accessing the course “because it was not one of the locations prioritised in the assessment that had been carried out”.The incident is now subject to a police investigation, but Portuguese media have reported that the driver is unlikely to face charges. Tarling’s death has led to calls for greater safety measures to be put in place to keep riders safe. The riders’ union, the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA), said: “We are speechless and filled with anger after the news of Finlay Tarling’s death at the Tour of Portugal. It is not right that a young athlete’s life should end this way, and we are furious that even today it is still not possible to prevent such serious accidents.”Finlay Tarling (second left) rode for the Great Britain Cycling Team and NSN Development (Getty)There has been a spate of deaths during bike races over the last few years. Swiss rider Gino Mader died aged 26 as a result of serious injuries sustained in a high-speed crash on a treacherous descent at his home race, the Tour de Suisse, in 2023. His compatriot, 18-year-old Muriel Furrer, died of traumatic brain injuries after crashing during the junior road race at the UCI World Championships - one of the sport’s most high-profile races - in Zurich the following year. She was not seen leaving the road and was not found for more than an hour. 19-year-old Italian cyclist Samuele Privitera died after crashing on a descent on the opening stage of the Giro della Valle d’Aosta last year. The sport’s governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), has faced calls to implement stricter safety measures in response to what is widely felt to be an increasingly high-risk sport, with average speeds going up and racing increasingly conducted at ‘full gas’ pace from the start of every stage. This year’s Tour de France was the fastest on record, eclipsing the record set just 12 months prior. Additionally, the cost of race security has risen in recent years and race organisers are coming under increasing pressure after a series of high-profile incidents involving course security being breached. Tarling won gold in the team pursuit at the British national championships in 2024 and was a talented time triallist (PA Archive)The last stage of the Tour Feminin International des Pyrenees was cancelled in 2023 after a series of near-misses involving riders and non-race vehicles driving on roads which were not closed to the public, with CPA president Adam Hansen saying the rolling roadblock was “not up to standard”. Several teams quit the men’s Etoile de Besseges race last year in protest at traffic entering the course and endangering riders.Hansen has also called for changes to cycling helmets as a result of the increased speed of road racing. He told BBC Sport: “They need a major upgrade. Bike helmets only need to meet standard testing like all helmets. EU standard CE EN 1078 is only rated for 19.5km/h and I do not believe this is enough for road racing.”The end of stage eight of the Volta a Portugal was neutralised and there was no stage winner as a result of Tarling’s death, while his team, NSN Development, withdrew from the race. Many riders wore black armbands for the remainder of the race, while a minute’s silence was observed before the start of the ninth stage. Race leader Alexis Guerin wore a black jersey rather than the traditional leader’s yellow and Portuguese rider Rui Oliveira dedicated his win on stage 10, the final day of the race, to Tarling and his family, saying: “First I want to give my condolences to Fin's family, friends, team - everyone. It's been a rough couple of days. I can imagine what they're suffering.“I said yesterday that I wanted to win for everyone that's supporting, but most of all for Fin's family and his team-mates. This one is for them."

Iran working to finalize Hormuz agreement with Oman, and other news from the Middle East

(AP Photo/Jehad Alshrafi)2026-08-17T09:37:56Z Iran said Monday it is working to finalize a joint statement with Oman on a plan to manage the transit of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Fully reopening the waterway to commercial shipping has been a key demand of the United States, but it remains unclear whether the deal will meet Washington’s criteria. The announcement came as the 60-day negotiating period to find a peace deal between the U.S. and Iran was expiring, with no word of an extension and both sides seemingly as far apart as they were two months ago. Here’s a look at the latest developments in the Iran war and the wider Middle East. Full coverage can be found here. Iran says it is near finalizing deal with Oman over plan for Strait of Hormuz shippingIran said Monday it has reached an agreement with Oman over a plan for ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz, which runs between the two countries, and the sides are now working to finalize details for a joint statement.Iranian Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told reporters in Tehran that “an understanding has been reached regarding the map of the transit route.”He did not elaborate, but details that have previously emerged suggest the deal would reopen the strait with ships entering through a route close to Iran and exiting through a route close to Oman. Ships would transit without paying fees or tolls during the interim period. The U.S. has sought an acceptable deal on opening the strait before ending its blockade of Iranian ports and it was not clear whether this would meet Washington’s expectations. Real Madrid academy forward Jacobo Ortega joins Strasbourg
Real Madrid academy forward Jacobo Ortega joins StrasbourgAlthough the six signings made by Real Madrid would excite the fans the most, another very prominent aspect of the club’s transfer market activity has been the sales of youth academy talent which have provided them with a very significant cash injection, reaching up to €200 million. The most notable of these academy players and graduates who have undertaken moves away from the Merengue club this summer include Gonzalo Garcia, Nico Paz, Cesar Palacios, Victor Valdepenas, and Mario Martin. Meanwhile, Los Blancos have also earned money from the sales of players like Victor Munoz and Alvaro Rodriguez, other La Fabrica graduates on whom they had sell-on clauses. However, these departures, and the earnings they entail, have not yet come to an end. As Diario AS has reported, another youth academy player, Jacobo Ortega, has now completed his move away from Real Madrid, as he joined the Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg Alsace in exchange for €10 million. Los Blancos will keep 30% of the player’s rights and have already confirmed his departure. This is another very good piece of business from the Merengues, as the youngster becomes the club’s most expensive sale of a player who had not yet made his debut with the first team. Ortega was still registered with the Real Madrid C team, but had already shown his talent and potential by being the top-scorer in the UEFA Youth League last season.Jacobo Ortega has now signed a five-year contract with Strasbourg, and at 20 years of age, has taken a very important step in his career. Hopefully, he will continue to develop at the French club and turn out to be an important player for them going forward. The youngster still has several years of growth and development ahead of him, but if everything turns out well, he can become a top-level forward in Europe, and maybe return to Real Madrid one day.

During her live halftime interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, Reese let an expletive slip on national television, and the network did not cut away in time.“I was playing like s— in the beginning, but it’s a game of runs,” Reese said. “You gotta put that in your back pocket just because you know you have teammates that have your back.”Angel Reese on Live TV 😭“I was playing like SH*T” pic.twitter.com/BKugUBppU2— BrickCenter (@BrickCenter_) August 16, 2026The comment aired uncensored, and clips spread across social media within minutes. Fans did not go easy on her.“How are they gonna allow her to curse on TV? There are kids watching this, fine her,” one fan wrote, part of a wave of replies that ranged from mild annoyance to calls for league discipline.Reese finished the first half with seven points on 3-of-10 shooting, nine rebounds and three assists. Not exactly clean numbers, but her fingerprints were all over Atlanta’s 7-0 closing burst that carried the Dream into the locker room with a four-point lead. Allisha Gray, Madina Okot and Rhyne Howard did the heavy scoring, and Reese credited all three by name in her interview.Analyst Monica McNutt praised Reese’s shift in energy as the reason Atlanta’s defense picked up, while Chiney Ogwumike called it contagious. The read did not sit well with Fever fans who watched Reese shoot 3-of-10 while Clark quietly matched her production on far fewer misses. Complaints about ESPN’s coverage piled up right alongside complaints about the language.Clark, meanwhile, was doing her usual damage. She scored 10 first-half points and dished five assists, right in line with her season average, even as turnovers piled up around her. The Fever shot just 3-of-13 from three in the half, a cold spell that let Atlanta hang around. With the score tied at 81-81 in the closing seconds of regulation, she grabbed an offensive rebound with a clean look at the rim and a chance to win it outright. She missed it. Naz Hillmon could not clean up the loose ball either, and the game rolled into overtime. Caitlin Clark’s Laugh Became The Real Story After The BuzzerESPN’s cameras caught what happened next. As Reese buried her face in her hands, Clark walked past her toward the bench with a visible smile, unable to hide her amusement at her rival’s misfortune. The moment went viral almost as fast as the curse word had.Caitlin Clark LAUGHING at Angel Reese after she missed a layup for the win 😭😭😭 pic.twitter.com/5Js8RijGUi— BrickCenter (@BrickCenter_) August 16, 2026Commentator Jason Whitlock piled on afterward, posting bluntly on social media that “Angel Reese is a comedy show.” However, Whitlock also picked Reese over Clark a few weeks ago. Reese still finished with a respectable double-double, 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, but on 5-of-16 shooting that told its own story about the night.Indiana closed it out in overtime behind Kelsey Mitchell, who hit a go-ahead layup with 13.6 seconds left to seal a 95-91 win, the Fever’s fourth straight. Clark finished with 26 points and nine assists, continuing to own the moments that matter most against Atlanta.None of this changes what Reese is this season, a three-time All-Star still putting up career numbers inside. The rivalry with Clark has followed both players since their college days at LSU and Iowa, through two national championship meetings and now three WNBA seasons of matchups that rarely stay quiet. But nights like this one are starting to define the story just as much as the stat sheet does, one rough quarter and one hot mic at a time.Atlanta will have little time to dwell on it. The Dream hit the road Tuesday to open a four-game trip against A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces, a far tougher measuring stick than Sunday’s rivalry game.

Tottenham agree deal with Juventus to send Vicario on season-long loan
FILE PHOTO - Guglielmo Vicario shouts during a soccer match. (is associated with: «Tottenham agree deal with Juventus to send Vicario on season-long loan») John Walton/PA Wire/dpaTottenham have reached an agreement to allow goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to sign for Juventus on a season-long loan, the Press Association understands.Vicario had been in limbo all summer after he asked Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi to leave and return to his homeland following three years in north London.Juventus emerged as Vicario’s favoured option, but they first targeted a move for Emiliano Martinez and then Parma youngster Zion Suzuki. However, after developments across the weekend, the Serie A club opened talks with Tottenham on Sunday and have wrapped up a season-long loan move with the option to buy the Italy international, PA understands.De Zerbi gave the green light for Vicario to leave after Antonin Kinsky stepped up to guide the club away from relegation with a string of fine displays in the final seven matches of last season.A transfer to Inter Milan initially appeared on the cards for Vicario before the Italian champions decided to go in a different direction with their goalkeeper situation. It left Vicario as an option for Juventus, but boss Luciano Spalletti had Argentina’s World Cup winner Martinez high up on his wish list before talks with Aston Villa stalled weeks ago with a gap in valuation over a final fee for the 33-year-old.Juventus next turned to Suzuki of Parma and, even after Paris Saint-Germain stole a march on the Italian club, the option for the Japan international to sign for the Old Lady on a season-long loan appeared a viable solution for all parties.A dramatic weekend of transfer movement has since followed with Suzuki’s move to PSG off and Villa now ready to sign the Parma goalkeeper, which momentarily opened the door again for Martinez to go to Juventus. With doubts over the fitness of Martinez due to a finger injury, Juventus accelerated their pursuit of Italy number two Vicario and are set to secure the services of the 29-year-old in time for him to feature in Sunday’s league opener at Frosinone.Vicario, who has made 117 appearances for Tottenham, signed from Empoli in 2023 and helped the club to Europa League success last year, but experienced a difficult 2025-26 campaign.

Boiler Alert! Tommy McClelland’s First Task & Transformation of Penn State
ORLANDO , FL - DECEMBER 27: Pop-Tarts mascots perform for fans before the Pop-Tarts Bowl between BYU Cougars and the and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL. (Photo by Peter Joneleit/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) | Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Ryan and I are back to chatting about Purdue football and this time we talk about Purdue’s game against Penn State which in the second half of the season. Purdue will travel to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions and while Penn State had a down season last year this is not a game I’m particularly excited about. Purdue will likely have a hard time because Penn State made some big changes in the offseason. They hired a new coach from Iowa State and he brought in roughly the entire Iowa State team. They’ve got some stars in the making on that roster. Before we get into that though we talk about Tommy McClelland and what he needs to do to bring Purdue athletics into the present day. Some folks might have to be shown the door and that’s okay. Sports are big business now. Gotta get used to it I guess. All that plus SNL, pop-tarts, and Ted Lasso. View Link

ACC Preview #11 – Boston College
WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 29: Assistant coach Luke Murray talks with head coach Dan Hurley of the UConn Huskies during the first half of a game against the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight of the 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Capital One Arena on March 29, 2026 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images) | Getty Images #1 – UNC || #2 – NC State || #3 – Wake Forest || #4 – Virginia || #5 – Clemson||#6 – Miami || #7 – Louisville || #8 – Pitt || #9 – Georgia Tech || #10 – SyracuseFor the last few years, we’ve asked the same question about two coaches: why is no one going after Northwest Missouri State’s Ben McCollum and UConn assistant Luke Murray?Drake finally took a gamble on D-II coach McCollum, and it paid off quickly with a 31-4 record. His hometown school, Iowa, came calling after his one season with the Bulldogs, and he took the Big Ten job. Last year, he had a 24-13 record, and made the Elite Eight, which Iowa hadn’t done since 1987. And now, Boston College has hired Murray. This is Murray’s first head-coaching position, but he’s already done something kind of amazing: he’s no longer known just as Bill Murray’s kid. That was his tag for quite a while, and he was seen as something of a novelty. That faded as his reputation grew. Give this to Murray: he hasn’t taken shortcuts. He took a position at D-II Post, then was a grad assistant at Arizona. From there, it was assistant positions at Wagner, Towson, and Rhode Island. He started getting better jobs, beginning with Xavier, then Louisville, and, finally, UConn. He had worked for Dan Hurley at Wagner and Rhode Island before rejoining him in Storrs, and his stint at UConn really made him a desirable hire. Murray was responsible for UConn’s offense, and while the Huskies obviously had plenty of talent, the offense was consistently brilliant. UConn won back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, and was national runner-up this past spring. So why did he choose Boston College, which has been a train wreck since Al Skinner was fired back in 2010? Here’s what Murray told the Boston Globe: “I like the challenge. That was the thing that stood out the most. To me, it has the greatest potential when you look at the history of the program, the history of the university, the conference that it competes in. It’s a little bit of an overused term, but it’s kind of a sleeping giant in men’s basketball. And I think the challenge of coming in here and getting this program to its rightful position in the league was probably the thing that won out.”So what is Murray working with? What kind of a team has he assembled? Let’s take a look. ReturneeJack Bailey PortalMoney Williams – 6-4 SR – MontanaAndrija Bukumirovic – 6-7 – SR UT MartinJacob Furphy – 6-6 SO – UConnJB Frankel – 6-3 GR – Northeastern backup pointErnest Shelton – 6-5 SR – Merrimack Luke Hunger – 6-10 GR – George Washington Brandon Benjamin – 6-8 SO – FairfieldColby Duggan – 6-7 SR – CharlestonArmoni Zeigler – 6-4 SR – Ball State Jameson O’Toole – 6-3 GR – FordhamAly Tounkara – 7-0 JR – Arkansas StateFreshmenZak Smrekar 6-6 (Slovenia)Jordan Ghee – 6-4 – NRGiven what ACC fans have gotten used to at Boston College, this team might be a nice surprise. Bailey, a 6-10 redshirt freshman, is the only holdover. He came to B.C. as a bit of a project, so who knows how much he grew during his redshirt year? He’s a bit of a mystery for most of us. Williams is a 6-4 Montana transfer. He’s a high-volume scorer and playmaker. At Montana, he averaged 20.6 ppg, with several 30 point outings, and had one game where he scored 40. He gets to the line a lot too, and hits 85% there. However, against Louisville last season, he was held to 0-6 and scored just four points. Bukumirovic brings a versatile, efficient forward who can stretch the floor. He also rebounds well, with 7.8 per game last season, and he dropped 22 on Florida State in November. Furphy is an interesting case. An Aussie, he spent a year at UConn, but barely played. He’s said to have a really high IQ, and he can shoot. He could be a major surprise, and he’s ahead of most of his teammates, because he already knows Murray’s system. He’s likely to start. He’s not the only one who knows Murray’s system, though. Shelton played at Merrimack, and Merrimack coach Joe Gallo is close friends with Murray, and runs a very similar offense. Shelton, a gifted scorer, will understand Murray’s sets immediately. He didn’t shoot well overall (38.6%), but hit 34.6% on threes, which is a big part of why he’s now an Eagle. Hunger is there because he’s big and physical. At GW, he averaged 8.4 ppg, and 5.1 rebounds. If it turns out that all he can do is set bone-crushing picks and defend, well, you remember UVA’s Jack Salt, right? That’s a good role model for Hunger. Benjamin was one of the nation’s best rebounders at Fairfield, where he pulled down 4.25 offensive boards per game, which led the nation. He averaged 10.4 overall. He also has a 7-2 wingspan. He’s going to play. Duggan missed most of last year at Charleston with a shoulder injury, but he was really good at Campbell, where, among other things, he racked up a 32-point game against UNC. He’s intriguing. Hopefully, he’s over his shoulder injury. Zeigler averaged 12.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, and 1.4 steals at Ball State last season. He’s also former Tennessee point guard Zakai Zeigler’s half-brother. Frankel is likely to be a backup point guard. He really improved over his time at Northeastern, and, at a minimum, should be a competent reserve. Tounkara didn’t post dazzling stats, but he’s an excellent rim protector, and an elite rebounder. And if you start in February, his stats jump from 4.3 ppg and 5.5 rebounds to 8.1 ppg and 9.2 rebounds. O’Toole is the son of former Pitt assistant Tim O’Toole. He’s not likely to be a huge factor, but you never know. As for the freshmen, Smrekar was a real coup for Murray. A native of Slovenia, at 6-6, he has an elite feel for the game and is said to be a tremendous playmaker. B.C. beat out schools like Illinois and UConn for Smrekar, and when was the last time you could say that about a B.C. recruit? Ghee is a guy who is probably on a development path as a freshman. He’s apparently quite mature on and off the court, and looks like a good cultural fit for what Murray is trying to build. He’s a guy to keep an eye on in coming years, but he may not be a major factor this season. You don’t have to be a genius to see what Murray is trying to do. He designed UConn’s offense, and this should look somewhat similar, although with less talent. If we had to guess, which we are, actually, we’d expect B.C. to start Williams and Shelton in the backcourt, Smrekar and Benjamin at the forward spots, and most likely Hunger at center. But how much will the Eagles drop off if the second team started? That’d be Frankel, Zeigler, Furphy, Duggan, and Tounkara. There’s been a thing this summer where someone suggested that Duke’s second five would be ranked. We’re not suggesting anything like that for Boston College, but compared to the talent we’ve seen lately for B.C., this team has a lot more than it’s had in years. There’s still a lot to prove. Of the top ten players, only Furphy has played at a major basketball school, and he barely got off the bench. Still, this is a serious talent upgrade. Boston College has shooting, it has rebounding, it has at least one excellent passer, and it has rim protection. Toss in Murray’s well-established offensive chops, and this team has some potential. However, it is important to note this. As promising as Murray appears to be, this is his first time running his own program, and there is always an element of risk there. No one knows what kind of leader he’ll be. You don’t have to look too far for an example – Hubert Davis will do fine. An immensely appealing man when he was on ESPN, he spent nine years as a Roy Williams assistant, and was Ol’ Roy’s choice to take over the UNC program after Williams retired. Unfortunately, he seemed to have trouble connecting with his players, not to mention the media for that matter, and his teams were wildly inconsistent. He was let go this past spring. Obviously, we won’t know what to make of Murray as a head coach until we get a bit further into his career. One note of concern: the way the B.C. TV team was handled. According to Kevin Collins and Josh Maurer, they put a lot of time and effort into trying to arrange a meeting with Murray once he was hired, only to be consistently put off. Eventually, they were let go, and they maintain that Murray wanted no connection to the Grant era, and wished to rebuild from the ground up.B.C.’s A.D., Blake James, denies that Murray had any role in that, maintaining that the university and its multimedia rights partner made the decision. We’ll take him at his word, but for his part, Murray could have reached out at some point just to say thanks, sorry, really busy, let’s talk later, and he’s been conspicuously silent since the firings. The rest of us should probably view this as a learning experience for Murray, and hope that he’ll apply the lessons learned. As for on-the-court Murray, at worst, we would expect the Eagles to break even. Realistically, they have a shot at the NIT, and if things go very well, they could make what we used to call the First Four, but with a 76-team tournament, might call something like the Dirty Dozen. Bottom line: Boston College is on the upswing and will likely become an ACC factor again sooner rather than later. Go to the DBR Boards to find Blue Healer Auctions || Drop us a line

Eagles 53-man roster projection, depth chart after QB debacle vs Ravens
PHILADELPHIA − The Eagles finally have a preseason game to evaluate, albeit not a very good one as they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 24-7 on Aug. 15.But it served a purpose because the Eagles got a chance to see their backups, roster hopefuls and young players go against a different team for the first time after two weeks of training camp practices. So there could be some shakeups at some of the positions. That could be true at quarterback where rookie Cole Payton outplayed the two veterans vying to be Jalen Hurts' backup in Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee.Buy Philadelphia Eagles ticketsNow, there are plenty of grains of salt to be taken with this. Payton played the final quarter, both with and against deep reserves and players who won't make either team's roster. But Payton did something Dalton and McKee couldn't do: lead a scoring drive. Not only did Payton lead a drive, he also threw for the most yards (an unimpressive 37) and ran for the most of any Eagles player (45). He also accounted for four of the Eagles' six most first downs (the Ravens had 31). Most importantly, Payton led the Eagles' only touchdown drive, capping it with a 6-yard TD pass to Erik Ezukanma."It was off-schedule," Payton said about the TD pass. "I didn’t like the first couple of reads, so I was able to get out of the pocket and Erik did a good job in the scramble drill. Found him in the back of the end zone."Payton was asked if he had thought about trying to run the ball in."Yeah," he said. "But I felt purple jerseys on the goal line and Erik by himself." Then he added with a laugh: "And I was also gassed. I won’t lie."Here's how Payton's performance and those of some of his teammates have impacted our second Eagles' 53-man roster projection. Players are listed in order of where they stand on the depth chart.Quarterback (3)In: Jalen Hurts, Andy Dalton, Cole PaytonOut: Tanner McKeeComment: Did Payton do enough against the Ravens to make the Eagles believe he could be a viable No. 3 QB? At the very least, he proved the Eagles could use him in gadget plays, and that could make him worth keeping around as a change of pace from non-mobile QBs in Dalton and McKee. I'm counting on McKee getting traded before the preseason ends, and thus not cut. Dalton is a better No. 2.Running back (3)In: Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Will ShipleyOut: Dameon Pierce, Elijah Mitchell, Carson Steele, Ja'Quinden JacksonComment: Barkley and Bigsby can form a solid 1-2 punch, with Bigsby getting a few series during the course of a game to preserve Barkley throughout the season. None of the other running backs have shown anything to displace Shipley as either a receiver out of the backfield or on special teams.EAGLES WINNERS, LOSERS: 14 winners, losers from Eagles preseason Week 1 as new offense bombedTight end (4)In: Dallas Goedert, Johnny Mundt, Cameron Latu, Eli StowersOut: Grant Calcaterra, E.J. Jenkins, Stone SmarttComment: Stowers, the Eagles' second-round pick, had a holding penalty on the first play against Baltimore. But he did rally to have a team-high 3 receptions, albeit for 12 yards. Mundt stays because he's the best blocking tight end, and Latu stays because he's good on special teams.Wide receiver (5)In: DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Elijah Moore, Makai Lemon, Darius CooperOut: Hollywood Brown, Johnny Wilson, Quez Watkins, Britain Covey, Samori Toure, Brandon Hayes, Erik Ezukanma, Danny GrayComment: Hollywood Brown, who signed for $5 million, has been disappointing throughout camp. Cooper was having a strong camp until struggling against the Ravens. But he stays. Wilson has missed valuable time with injuries. Overall, this unit has been unimpressive, especially with Smith out for the past two weeks with a hamstring injury.Offensive line (11)In: (starters, from left) Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson. Reserves: Markel Bell, Fred Johnson, Drew Kendall, Cameron Williams, Micah Morris, Willie LampkinOut: Michael Jordan, Hollin Pierce, John Ojukwu, Jake Majors, Myles HintonComment: The starting unit is among the best in the NFL. The dropoff to the reserves, however, is steep. Bell gets the swing tackle spot over Fred Johnson. Kendall and Lampkin have had strong camps. Both can play center and guard. Kendall could be in the lead for both roles.Edge rusher (6)In: Jonathan Greenard, Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, AJ Epenesa, Arnold Ebiketie, Joshua WeruOut: Jose Ramirez, Keyshawn James-Newby, Tarron JacksonComment: Greenard should be off the PUP list before the end of camp. Weru, the Kenyan signed from the International Player Pathways program, was impressive against the Ravens, with a QB hit and a pass breakup that was negated by penalty. The Eagles will find a spot for him.EAGLES VS RAVENS: Eagles QBs brutal in preseason loss to Ravens. Who's winning backup job?Defensive tackle (6)In: Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo, Byron Young, Ty Robinson, Uar BernardOut: Zion Wilson, Gabe Hall, David BlayComment: The top three in Carter, Davis and Ojomo are stars. Robinson, the fourth-round pick last season, has come on strong after a slow start. As an IPP player, Bernard stays so that another team doesn't claim him.Linebacker (4)In: Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell, Jeremiah Trotter, Smael MondonOut: Chance Campbell, Deontae Lawson, Brandon GeorgeComment: Campbell was having a good camp until he was injured. He was beaten in coverage against the Ravens, while Mondon, the Eagles' fifth-round pick in 2025, has played better of late. Plus, he's established as a good special teams player. Trotter has had a good camp and could start on some NFL teams.Cornerback (5)In: Quinyon Mitchell, Riq Woolen, Cooper DeJean, Jakorian Bennett, Kelee RingoOut: Jonathan Jones, Mac McWilliams, Shaun Wade, Maximus Pulley, Ambry Thomas, Tariq Castro-FieldsComment: The Eagles' top three are among the top trio of CBs in the NFL. The dropoff, however, is dramatic. Jones, the 11-year veteran, has been injured. McWilliams had a brutal game against Baltimore. Ringo stays because he's a Pro Bowl special teams player. Keep an eye on Wade.Safety (4)In: Drew Mukuba, Marcus Epps, Michael Carter, Cole WisniewskiOut: J.T. Gray, Andre Sam, Kapena GushikenComment: DeJean will play safety in base packages, leaving Epps as the starter next to Mukuba the rest of the time. Carter had his ups and downs at safety against the Ravens after he had played nickel in is previous five NFL seasons. Wisniewski, the Eagles' seventh-round pick, appears to be an IR candidate as he has missed time with a hamstring injury. The Eagles aren't ready to give up on Wisniewski just yet.Specialists (2)In: Jake Elliott-kicker, Braden Mann-punterOut: Rocco Underwood-long snapperComment: Underwood, an undrafted free agent, is headed for the practice-squad elevation route unless the Eagles find someone better on the waiver wire. Elliott has had a solid training camp so far. Mann got a workout against the Ravens, punting eight times because of the inept offense.Contact Martin Frank at mfrank@delawareonline.com. ESPN ranks Jahmyr Gibbs contract extension against recent NFL deals
ESPN ranked Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs' deal as the fifth-best recent NFL contract extension.Gibbs landed just behind Atlanta Falcons rusher Bijan Robinson (No. 3) and just ahead of Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (No. 7). The trio were the only running backs featured on the list. After a short hold-in to begin training camp, Detroit signed Gibbs to a three-year, $67.5 million contract extension, with $51.5 million guaranteed. Incentives boost the potential value of the agreement to $75.75 million. The 24-year-old is young, elite, and unusually valuable as a pass catcher out of the backfield. This combination of traits makes him a rare, premium investment at the position.Like Gibbs, Robinson features that unique combination of run and catch traits. The former Texas Longhorn ranked No. 1 in total scrimmage yards and earned a first-team All-Pro selection in 2025.For the Lions, Gibbs rushed for 1,223 yards on 243 carries last season, averaging 5.0 yards-per-carry and scoring 13 touchdowns. His Pro Football Focus overall grade of 85.6 was fifth-best among qualified backs. Taylor led the league in both rushing touchdowns (18) and total carries (323).The price of each contract, overall roster construction philosophy, salary cap restrictions, and contention timeline were all factors in where each player fell on this ladder. Generally praising the contract, ESPN NFL writer Seth Walder delivered leveled skepticism about the broader idea of paying running backs top dollar. While Gibbs' contract represents top-of-market money today, marquee runners occupied a much larger portion of the overall cap in previous eras.Walder had this to say of Gibbs' extension:Gibbs' numbers last season weren't quite as good as Robinson's (168 rush yards over expected to Robinson's 249, and 126 receiving yards over expected to Robinson's 201, per NFL Next Gen Stats), but I think these are the best two running backs in the NFL.While this is top-of-the-market money for a running back today, it's less than what running backs were paid in the past. For example, in 2015, Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch signed deals that were worth the equivalent of $29.4 million and $25.2 million per year, respectively, in 2026's cap environment. Gibbs ranks fifth on this list, but the gap between No. 3 -- where Robinson landed -- and No. 5 in these rankings is small.ESPN's 10 most interesting recent NFL contract extensionsNo. 1: Brian O'Neil, OT, Minnesota Vikings (Four years, $96 million)No. 2: Darnell Wright, OT, Chicago Bears (Four years, $116 million)No. 3: Bijan Robinson, RB, Atlanta Falcons (Three years, $66.75 million)No. 4: Chris Olave, WR, New Orleans Saints (Four years, $124 million)No. 5: Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Detroit Lions (Three years, $67.5 million)No. 6: Zay Flowers, WR, Baltimore Ravens (Four years, $140 million)No. 7: Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis Colts (Two years, $44 million)No. 8: Jalen Carter, DT, Philadelphia Eagles (Four years, $152 million)No. 9: Denzel Ward, CB, Cleveland Browns (Two years, $62.2 million)No. 10: Matthew Bergeron, G, Atlanta Falcons (Four years, $96 million)For more Lions coverage, follow us on X, @TheLionsWire, and give our Facebook page a like. This article originally appeared on Lions Wire: ESPN ranks Jahmyr Gibbs contract extension against recent NFL deals

South Korea hopes for talks between US and North Korea after Trump downsizes military drills
U.S. Army's armored vehicles gather to cross a river at a training field in Yeoncheon, South Korea, near the border with North Korea, Monday, Aug. 17, 2026. (AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon)2026-08-17T10:44:45Z SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea on Monday expressed hopes for resumption of diplomacy between the U.S. and North Korea to ease animosities on the Korean Peninsula, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said he ordered annual U.S. military exercises with South Korea to be scaled back.Trump cited his good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the decision. The announcement baffled many in South Korea, a key U.S. ally in Asia where national security is a top priority due to threats from nuclear-armed North Korea. The 11-day, summertime Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises began Monday morning as scheduled and it wasn’t known which parts of the training were being downsized. North Korea did not immediately respond to the announcement. North Korea previously threatened strong responses to the U.S.-South Korean exercises, which it views as an invasion rehearsal. Experts say Trump’s step signals his willingness to reengage with Kim, but the North Korean leader, now emboldened by his advancing nuclear arsenal and expanding military cooperation with Russia, won’t likely return to talks unless he is assured of serious U.S. concessions. Trump orders military to ‘substantially reduce’ drillsTrump said in a social media post that the exercises are not only costly but “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile” to North Korea, which he said “has been unthreatening and respectful” during his time in the White House. Trump instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to “substantially reduce” the exercises, he said, adding that he recently asked South Korean President Lee Jae Myung if they would join the U.S. in the “denuclearization” of Iran, “and they said, ‘No thanks!’” Trump’s move is the latest example of the American president appearing to turn against an ally in favor of a leader cast by previous administrations as an adversary. Trump and others in his administration also have railed against NATO allies over a perceived lack of support for his war against Iran, even as they seek to confront an increasingly aggressive Russia in the Baltic region. The trust many South Koreans have in the U.S. has eroded following a tariff war instigated by Trump’s administration and his transactional approach to security. Read More South Korea hopes for talks between US and North KoreaLee’s presidential office said later Monday that South Korea hopes “friendly relationship” between Trump and Kim would lead to “meaningful dialogue” between the U.S. and North Korea and start discussions on promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. It said that South Korea will make necessary diplomatic efforts for that. South Korea and the U.S. are closely discussing practical and military contributions that can be made to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to South Korea’s presidential office, which said the countries have been closely coordinating over their joint military drills and readiness.Lee is a liberal who espouses improved ties with North Korea. Since taking office last year, his government has taken proactive steps to improve ties with North Korea, including turning off front line loudspeakers that blared K-pop music and world news and banning activists from flying balloons carrying propaganda leaflets toward North Korea. On Saturday, Lee offered to hold talks to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. But North Korea has shunned any talks with South Korea and the U.S. since Kim’s high-stakes nuclear diplomacy with Trump broke down in 2019. Kim has since used the long-running diplomatic stalemate with the U.S. and South Korea to expand his nuclear and missile arsenals by accelerating weapons tests and ramping up production of nuclear materials. He also has bolstered his diplomatic credentials by aligning with Russia over its war against Ukraine and taking steps to deepen cooperation with China. In September 2025, Kim said he held “good personal memories” of Trump but suggested he could only resume talks with the American president if the U.S. drops “its delusional obsession with denuclearization” of North Korea. Experts say Kim likely aims to win major concessions like extensive sanctions relief in return for limited denuclearization steps. “Trump’s recent social media posts about Kim Jong Un suggest a willingness to reengage, but North Korea is busy profiting from Russia’s war against Ukraine while modernizing its own military,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. Downsizing the U.S. and South Korean drills “can damage alliance coordination, slow the process of South Korea taking on greater responsibility for its own defense, and weaken deterrence against possible conflicts in Asia,” Easley said. Military drills test tactics and anger North KoreaSouth Korea’s military earlier said the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises this year would be similar to previous years in scale, with about 18,000 South Korean soldiers taking part. The U.S. military said the drills would incorporate lessens from recent conflicts such as North Korea’s battlefield experiences in the Russia-Ukraine front, while including a live-fire exercise to test joint precision targeting and maneuver, a wet gap crossing and distribution of prepositioned military equipment.North Korea’s Foreign Ministry on Friday accused the U.S. and South Korea of plotting more provocative drills this year and vowed to respond with “a new level of a deterrent.” Earlier this month, North Korea fired two ballistic missiles into the sea in a likely protest of the drills. This is not the first time Trump has sought to suspend the drills. After his first summit with Kim in 2018, Trump unilaterally announced the suspension of the U.S.-South Korean summertime exercises, calling them “very provocative” and “tremendously expensive.”Kim Dong-yub, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, said North Korea feels less urgency to return to talks with the U.S. and South Korea now than when it entered talks with its rivals in 2018, but is unlikely to completely ignore Trump’s overture. He predicted North Korea will likely say it has noted Trump’s post but will wait for further action showing the U.S. intends to drop hostilities against North Korea. AP Decision Notes: What to expect in California’s special congressional election
An American flag stands outside the office of California's 14th Congressional District in the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, Monday, July 20, 2026. (AP Photo/Tallulah Brown Van Zee)2026-08-17T11:15:45Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Four months after Democratic U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell resigned from Congress amid sexual assault allegations that torpedoed his campaign for California governor, his former Bay Area constituents will pick a replacement Tuesday to serve out the rest of his term. With two Democrats competing on the ballot, the seat in California’s 14th Congressional District is guaranteed to remain under Democratic control and further narrow an already fragile Republican majority in the chamber.State Sen. Aisha Wahab and Bay Area Rapid Transit Board President Melissa Hernandez were the finalists in the June 16 special primary, in which the top two finishers regardless of party affiliation advanced to Tuesday’s special election. The two also will compete in the fall in a slightly redrawn district for a full term that begins in January 2027. Wahab placed first in both the June 16 special primary and the June 2 primary for the full-term seat to replace Swalwell, who has denied the allegations against him. In both contests, Wahab led Hernandez by more than 20 percentage points.Hernandez has more than doubled Wahab’s fundraising and spending for the campaign, but as of the end of July the two were on roughly even footing in terms of cash in the bank. The race has also attracted the attention of several outside groups, including some affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful pro-Israel lobbying organization. United Democracy Project, a super political action committee backed by AIPAC, spent $1.2 million on the race in August in support of Hernandez and in opposition to Wahab, according to Federal Election Commission records. Another group, Bold America, which has received funding from United Democracy Project, has spent about $1.7 million on the race since the special primary, also in support of Hernandez and in opposition to Wahab. Read More Collectively, outside groups have spent about $4.1 million on the race since mid-July. About $3.7 million was spent to benefit Hernandez’s campaign, compared with just shy of $400,000 to benefit Wahab’s. The boundaries of the 14th Congressional District were redrawn as part of a new congressional map approved by voters in a 2025 statewide ballot measure known as Proposition 50. The map goes into effect for the full-term seat in January, while the winner of the special election will serve under the current boundaries for the remainder of the year.Proposition 50 was placed on the ballot in response to mid-decade redistricting efforts led by President Donald Trump in several Republican-controlled states. While the plan created a congressional map more favorable to Democrats, no dramatic changes were made to the 14th District. Under the current boundaries, Democrats make up 50.4% of registered voters in October, compared with 17.6% for Republicans. Under the new boundaries, Democrats comprise about 49.7% of registered voters as of mid-May, compared with about 17.4% for Republicans. In 2024, Democratic then-Vice President Kamala Harris carried the current 14th District with 65.8% of the vote in the presidential election against Trump. If the election had been held under the new boundaries, Harris would have received 65.4% of the vote. Both versions of the district are contained entirely within Alameda County in the East Bay. The current district includes Hayward, Livermore, Pleasanton and Union City, as well as parts of San Leandro, Fremont and Dublin. Here are some of the key facts about the election and data points the AP Decision Team will monitor as the votes are tallied: When do polls close?Polls close at 8 p.m. PT, which is 11 p.m. ET.What’s on the ballot? The Associated Press will provide vote results and declare a winner in the 14th Congressional District special election.Who gets to vote?Any registered voter in the current version of California’s 14th Congressional District may participate in the special election. How many voters are there? As of May 2026, there were about 423,000 registered voters in the 14th Congressional District, including about 210,000 Democrats, about 73,000 Republicans and about 116,000 voters with no party preference. How many people actually vote?Nearly 124,000 voters cast ballots in the June 16 special primary. About 276,000 people voted in the regularly scheduled 2024 general election in the 14th District. How much of the vote is cast early or by absentee ballot?About 98% of votes in the June 16 special primary were from absentee ballots delivered in person or by mail.As of Wednesday, about 52,000 ballots had already been cast in Tuesday’s election, about 32,500 from Democrats, about 7,800 from Republicans and the rest from unaffiliated or third-party voters. When are early and absentee votes released? In Alameda County, the first vote update of the night usually includes only results from mail voting, but the county typically still has a sizable number of mail ballots left to tally by the next morning. How long does vote-counting usually take?In the June 16 special primary, the AP first reported results at 11:17 p.m. ET, or 17 minutes after polls closed. The last vote update of the night was at 1:03 a.m. ET, with about 87% of total votes counted. The vote count reached 99.9% complete at 7:26 p.m. ET on June 18. When will the AP declare a winner? The AP does not make projections and will declare a winner only when it’s determined there is no scenario that would allow a trailing candidate to close the gap. If a race has not been called, the AP will continue to cover any newsworthy developments, such as candidate concessions or declarations of victory. In doing so, the AP will make clear that it has not yet declared a winner and explain why.How do recounts work? There are no automatic recounts in California. Any registered voter may request and pay for a recount. The AP may declare a winner in a race that is subject to a recount if it can determine the lead is too large for a recount or legal challenge to change the outcome. Are we there yet?As of Tuesday, there will be 77 days until the 2026 midterm elections.___Follow the AP’s coverage of the 2026 election at https://apnews.com/projects/elections-2026/. Ukraine energy company says its facilities seriously damaged after 13 Russian strikes in a week

(AP Photo/Francisco Seco)2026-08-17T11:12:59Z KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia attacked facilities of Ukraine’s Naftogaz Group 13 times over the past week and has targeted its premises almost 300 times since the start of the year, the state energy company said Monday.Russia has repeatedly battered the Ukrainian power grid since its all-out invasion more than four years ago. Moscow hopes to sap Ukraine’s will to fight by denying civilians light, heating and running water during the bitter winter months.Ukrainian officials, who say Russia is “weaponizing winter,” fear Moscow will pursue its campaign through the coming winter, too.Russian drones and missiles struck facilities in several regions of the country, with one asset hit multiple times during the week, Naftogaz said, reporting serious damage to equipment and production capacity. No employees were hurt in the attacks, the company said. With troops largely bogged down by drones and robots along the roughly 1,250-kilometer (780-mile) front line, both Russia and Ukraine are expanding their aerial campaigns and devising new long-range weapons.Ukrainian long-range attacks on Russia killed seven people, while four civilians died in Ukraine after strikes by Moscow’s forces, officials said Monday as they collated overnight attacks.Ukraine depended heavily on foreign military aid after Russia’s full-scale invasion of February 2022 but has gradually increased its domestically produced firepower, firing a salvo of more than 800 long-range drones at Russia on Sunday. Ukraine also has successfully targeted depots owned by Wildberries, Russia’s main online retailer, as far as 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from Ukraine’s border. Read More Russian forces have increasingly hit apartment blocks, ports, schools and hospitals, among other urban targets, killing close to 17,000 civilians, according to the United Nations. The death toll of 437 Ukrainian civilians in July was 70% higher than the same month in 2025, it said last week, as Russia’s barrages intensified.Russia has exploited Ukraine’s severe shortage of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, which are the only way of countering ballistic missiles. But Kyiv is swiftly innovating, with Ukraine now developing its own ballistic missile to hit back at Russia and working with European countries on developing more anti-ballistic air defenses.___Follow the AP’s coverage of the war in Ukraine at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine HANNA ARHIROVA Arhirova is an Associated Press reporter covering Ukraine.
