‘Woke joke’: WNBA team sparks outrage with ‘disgusting’ she/they mascot
Credit: X via @ItsMeghanLHallOne of the WNBA’s new expansion franchises, the Toronto Tempo, played host to the Indiana Fever for the first time in franchise history on Tuesday. Due to the massive draw that is Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark, the game was moved from Toronto’s normal arena of Coca-Coal Coliseum at Exhibition Place, to the larger-capacity Scotiabank Arena, where the Toronto Raptors play.Heading into the game, The Toronto Sun’s Matt Simmons wrote about just how big a draw Clark is.“There has never been a professional athlete in North American team sports who has changed her league and the business of her sport the way Clark has in three WNBA seasons,” Simmons wrote.Simmons also wrote about Clark’s impact on television ratings.“Of the 10 most-watched WNBA games played this season, all 10 include Clark and the Fever. She’s almost her own league, even as her fellow players tend to ignore her, rough her up, or denigrate her play.”Toronto was well aware of the extra eyes that’d be on the franchise, and used the opportunity to unveil the franchise’s mascots, Dez and Dot, at halftime of the contest. The Toronto Tempo have revealed their mascots:Dez (she/they) the Snapping Turtle and Dot (she/her) the Arctic Hare. pic.twitter.com/rgR6lD13xB— Meghan L. Hall (@ItsMeghanLHall) August 19, 2026Together, Dez and Dot offer a new spin on one of the oldest pairings in storytelling: the tortoise and the hare. Instead of slow against fast, they are steady and swift – a reminder that knowing when to change pace can be just as important as the pace itself,” the Tempo shared. However, some fans on social media were inexplicably upset with the inclusion of a mascot with a she/they gender.“I was so ready to be on board with this team. The Metro Gnome. Even a beaver could’ve been cool. Instead we get this woke joke,” one fan posted on X.“Oh boy trans mascots,” someone else added.“That thing is disgusting,” another fan wrote.Ultimately, the WNBA is a league that prides itself on its inclusivity. As much as outside agitators have tried to use it to advance their own personal agendas, it’s clear that those in and around the league are determined to keep it a safe place for everyone. The post ‘Woke joke’: WNBA team sparks outrage with ‘disgusting’ she/they mascot appeared first on The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions.

Braxton Ashcraft works 8 efficient innings, Oneil Cruz homers as Pirates top Tigers 4-1
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Braxton Ashcraft allowed five hits over eight efficient innings, Oneil Cruz homered in his return from the injured list, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Tuesday night.Ashcraft (13-5), a first-time All-Star this season, struck out four and didn't issue a walk while throwing just 80 pitches. The 26-year-old right-hander, coming off the first complete game of his career in a win over Miami last week, gave up a fifth-inning homer to Tigers rookie Brett Callahan but otherwise cruised to his fourth win in five starts.Ashcraft became the first Pittsburgh pitcher since A.J. Burnett in 2012 to record a complete game and then work at least eight innings in his next start.Mason Montgomery worked the ninth for his fifth save.Cruz, out since early June after breaking his left hand, turned on a 2-2 knuckle curve from Keider Montero (9-8) in the fifth inning and sent it 422 feet to right-center for his 15th homer of the season and his first since June 2. It was Pittsburgh's 81st homer at PNC Park, tying the 2003 team for the most in a season at the ballpark that opened in 2001.Spencer Horwitz and Bryan Reynolds added RBI singles for the Pirates, who have won four of six.Detroit, in a tight race with a handful of clubs for the final AL wild-card spot, has lost four of five.Montero was perfect through four innings but walked Esmeryln Valez on four pitches leading off the fifth before Cruz's homer. Montero surrendered three runs on four hits in five innings.Up nextThe series concludes on Wednesday. Carlos Prates: UFC promised Islam Makhachev title shot is next after signing new 8-fight contract
Carlos Prates had a front-row seat to the action at UFC 330 in Philadelphia this past Saturday. With his sights firmly set on the victor, Prates watched intently as UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev defended his title against Ian Machado Garry. In the end, it was Makhachev who walked away with a hard-fought unanimous decision to secure his first defense of the 170-pound title. The competitive affair left Brazil's Prates optimistic and excited to challenge the reigning pound-for-pound superstar Makhachev.Speaking Tuesday's on "The Ariel Helwani Show," Prates revealed that he had a conversation with UFC CBO Hunter Campbell while in Philadelphia — and according to the top-ranked knockout artist, Prates is indeed next in line."I'm the next for the title. New contract. The next one for the title, let's go," Prates told Uncrowned."Eight fights [on the new contract]. ... I think [Michael Morales] is going to fight Belal Muhammad or somebody, another fighter. Maybe, I don't know, but another fight."Throughout his UFC career, Prates (24-7, 7-1 in UFC) has been an exceptionally entertaining fighter. He's knocked out his opponents in all seven of his promotional wins, including former welterweight champions Jack Della Maddalena and Leon Edwards.By contrast, Prates isn't overly wowed by what he’s seen from Makhachev’s first two welterweight bouts."I think [Makhachev's style] is boring," Prates said of the former UFC lightweight champion. "I don't like watching fights at all. Striking fights or some friends, of course, I like to watch. But especially if there's a grappler fighting, I don't like to watch. I like to watch people getting knockouts, a lot of action and things like that."It's crazy because now I really like to train grappling more than striking, but I don't like to watch grappling and fighters going to the ground and boring fights."Prates, 33, last fought when he finished the aforementioned Della Maddalena in their May showdown in Perth. He was hopeful he'd get the title shot over Garry, but instead now must wait until what he expects will be December, due to the damage Makhachev recieved at UFC 330 and the champion's usual long wait between fights.Carlos Prates scored a massive win over ex-champ Jack Della Maddalena in May.Ed Mulholland via Getty Images"I'm in no rush. As much as I need to wait, I'm going to be training, you know. Studying, be training, so I can be more ready," Prates said."On the takedowns, or when he's striking, I see the way I can defend some things and stop some takedowns. … He has good kickboxing, bro. Of course, I'm much better, so I'm excited to test myself against him. … I really think I can win, shock the world, make everybody surprised. I will do this."Prates has his own history with Garry, too. The lone loss of the Fighting Nerds product's UFC career came to Garry in their April 2025 meeting in Kansas City.Much like UFC CEO Dana White and Makhachev after UFC 330, Prates was confused by Garry's extreme showings of respect in the title tilt. Regardless, he can see his old foe fighting for UFC gold again, and praised Garry for his mental strength at just 28 years old."I don't like that he hugged so much during the fight and being really friends. But everybody has the way they like to do the things," Prates said. "He likes this way, but I don't think it's a nice way to go to the fight."He's young, but his mindset is really good."As optimistic as Prates is to be next for Makhachev, nothing is official just yet.Surging contender Michael Morales was also in attendance at UFC 330, and seemingly stands as the lone obstacle in Prates' path to a title shot. Some sportsbooks have already given the undefeated Morales a better chance of dethroning Makhachev than Prates.Prates, though, isn't concerned about being skipped over for the title shot, and he even understands why Morales may get the public nod. The hype is justified with the Ecuadorian, he says. Prates admits a matchup between the two would be a great fight."People think Morales can fight better than me just because he's stronger, but of course, in the striking, I would kill Morales," Prates said. "Grappling? I don't know. Everybody calls that guy a wrestler, but I've never seen him try to get a takedown. Maybe people say Morales would have more chance to beat Islam because he's bigger, like he's really heavy, but in terms of technique and things like that, I think I'm much better."He's not overhyped. He's really good. He's undefeated. But I think people believe he has a better chance of beating Islam because he's stronger [than me] — [that] he's a bigger guy, and it would be a little bit harder for Islam to take him down."

Carlos Rodón looks strong in abbreviated return for Yankees from nearly 2-month layoff
The New York Yankees got a key piece of their rotation back Tuesday night with the return of three-time All-Star Carlos Rodón from a multi-week layoff. Rodón was limited to 4 innings in his first MLB game since June 28, but he looked good in those frames while allowing a single run via a solo home run.Rodón had been sidelined due to left elbow inflammation following a strong start to his season. He made multiple rehab starts before being cleared for Tuesday’s road game against the Baltimore Orioles. Rodón issued an early walk to Tyler O'Neill, but didn’t allow another base-runner in the first inning. He then faced pressure in the second before working out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam.Rodón works out of bases-loaded jam with 2 strikeoutsRodón got Carlos Narváez out with a swinging third strike for the second out of the frame. He then caught leadoff hitter Jackson Holliday looking with high heat on the outside corner. Home-plate umpire Will Little called the 96 mph fastball a ball. But catcher Austin Wells challenged the call, and ABS replay confirmed Strike 3 to end the inning.Carlos Rodón leaves the bases loaded ⛽️ pic.twitter.com/235eJ3jWvZ— YES Network (@YESNetwork) August 18, 2026The Orioles eventually got to Rodón with two outs in bottom of the third inning. He’d thrown 58 pitches in his last rehab start.A little help from LombardManager Aaron Boone decided to send him out for one more inning. Rodón delivered with a 1-2-3 frame with an assist from rookie sensation George Lombard Jr., who’s impressed with his bat and his glove since his Aug. 4 MLB debut.Lombard delivered the first out of the inning with a sensational put-out on a Christian Encarnacion-Strand ground ball. The Yankees went on to a 3-1 win to improve to 70-55 and strengthen their hold on the top wild-card spot in the American League. It added up to an encouraging outing for Rodón, who’d posted a 3.30 ERA in 46 1/3 innings prior to his injury. The Yankees are counting on his effective return for the stretch run of the season and the playoffs.

Rutgers Football Dismisses Former Four-Star EDGE Wydeek Collier-Johnson
The Rutgers Football program has dismissed former four-star EDGE rusher Wydeek Collier- Johnson for a violation of team rules, according to Richie O’Leary of The Knight Report. Further information about the cause of his dismissal is yet to be released. Collier-Johnson was a highly rated recruit coming out of the 2025 class, after he reclassified into the 2025 class after originally being a 2026 prospect. He was the highest-rated recruit for Rutgers in the 2025 class according to the Rivals Industry Rankings after spending his time in the high school ranks at Neumann-Goretti High School in Pennsylvania. During the last year of his high school career, Collier-Johnson recorded 35 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, and eight sacks. In addition to Rutgers, he received a lot of interest from Penn State coming out of high school. Despite being a little underweight for his build and position, standing at 6-foot-7, 240 pounds, Collier-Johnson did see some playing time in three games as a freshman, taking snaps against Norfolk State, Iowa, and Penn State. He did not record a stat in either of those games. With Rutgers’ questionable defensive line room, there was seemingly a good opportunity for Collier-Johnson to compete for playing time this fall. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano reinforced this belief during a few of his off-season press conferences. What the next chapter is in his playing career remains to be seen.

An Analytical Analysis Of What Real Madrid Need In Midfield (Post-Kroos)
Since Toni Kroos’s retirement, Real Madrid’s attack seems largely like an orchestra without a conductor, unable to find someone to cohesively pull the strings on a pitch filled with talented footballers with distinct skillsets. The de facto leader of Madrid on the pitch in the later years of his career, Kroos attempted over 100 passes per 90 minutes in La Liga in his final season at Madrid, completing nearly 95% of his passes, and 82 pass attempts per 90 in the Champions League. By comparison, Madrid’s leading passer from midfield last season was Aurélien Tchouaméni with only 65.5 pass attempts per 90 in La Liga and 55.7 per 90 in Champions. In fact, with Luka Modric’s subsequent departure, it was two centre-backs (Antonio Rüdiger in La Liga and Dean Huijsen in the Champions League) that led Madrid in pass attempts per 90 for the first time in nearly a decade. Two of the criticisms of Madrid post-Kroos/Modric is that the deeper players like Rüdiger and Fede Valverde don’t: i) circulate the ball quickly enough or ii) provide sufficient incisive passes to the forward line. We analyzed both points to see the validity of these concerns as it relates to Madrid’s midfield.Let’s first tackle quick ball circulation. Kroos’s final season at Madrid saw him attempt 22.2% of his passes one-touch (fourth percentile amongst midfielders in the top five leagues) and 53.7% within two seconds of receiving the ball (eighth percentile amongst midfielders in the top five leagues) in league play while Modric that same season saw 23.5% of his passes come via first touch (10th percentile) and 52.6% under two seconds (seventh percentile). By comparison, Aurelien Tchouaméni and Valverde last season distributed 26.4% and 26.3% of their passes, respectively in La Liga one-time (higher percentages than Kroos and Modric in 2023/2024) with nearly the identical percentage of quick passes (passes within two seconds of receiving the ball) as the German legend and Croatian maestro had in 2023/2024 (Tchouaméni: 53.8%; Kroos: 53.7%; Valverde: 53.3%; Modric: 52.6%).It is a popular misconception that being a tempo controller often requires playing the ball quickly and having a significant percentage of one-two touch passes. Kroos was not a great tempo controller because he often passed the ball first touch. As the chart above demonstrates, Kroos actually circulated the ball slower his final season than many of Madrid’s midfielders last season. The best tempo controllers know when to play first-time, when to hold on to the ball for several seconds, when to progress the ball and when to value retaining possession, understanding that the scoreline, moment in the match, and positioning of players on the pitch dictate when to move the ball quickly and when to slow the play down. Vitinha, considered by many to be the best deep-lying playmaker in the game today, distributed less than our out of every five attempted passes (18.3%) during live play last season in Ligue 1 from a first touch. In fact, the vaunted PSG starting midfield were amongst the European midfields that played the least number of quick passes. Less than 50% of the PSG’s midfield trio’s passes were distributed in under two seconds (Vitinha: 46.8%; Fabián Ruiz: 44.1%; João Neves: 49.4%). Rodri also saw less than half of his passes (49.3%) last season in the Premier League be in under two seconds. The following table demonstrates the correlation between passing the ball after one-touch and overall passing accuracy. Unsurprisingly, midfielders that pass the ball first-touch with higher regularity often have lower passing accuracy than midfielders that circulate the ball slower. Now let’s address incisive passing. For this we reached out to Madrid-headquartered Driblab, a leader in football data analytics. Driblab prepared for Managing Madrid an in-depth passing analysis of midfielders in the top-five leagues last season, looking at their line-breaking passes per 90 minutes and the percentage those passes represented of their total completed passes. Driblab’s analysis indicates that no Madrid midfielder featured in the top-20 in the top five leagues in line-breaking passes per 90 minutes, in part because of the low volume of passes from its midfielders. Vitinha led the top five leagues in distributing these incisive passes, averaging more than 10 per 90 minutes, with Juventus’s Manuel Locatelli and Bayer Leverkusen’s Aleix García coming in second and third — the Italian and Spaniard averaging more than nine line-breaking passes per 90 minutes. Both veterans had previously been mentioned as low-cost solutions to fill Madrid’s deep-lying playmaker role. Two players frequently mentioned as potential Madrid targets, Angelo Stiller and Adam Wharton, also scored high in this incisive passing metric. Stiller provided nearly eight line-breaking passes per 90 last season in the Bundesliga, comparable to Rodri in the Premier League. Wharton provided over six line-breaking passes per 90 despite averaging only slightly more than 42 pass attempts per 90, with nearly 16% of his completed passes being line-breaking passes, a testament to how the Englishman often looks to create scoring chances for his teammates through his passing verticality, but that also indicative that he really isn’t a tempo controller, but rather much more of an accelerator.Three other players that often come up as potential Madrid targets, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and Martin Zubimendi, did not fare as well in the incisive passing test, albeit in the case of the Chelsea midfielder his significant time playing in a more advanced role at the London club undoubtedly hurt his ability to execute line-breaking passes at a high frequency. Enzo averaged slightly more than five line-breaking passes per 90 last season (fewer than Tchouaméni or Arda Güler) while Zubimendi and Mac Allister each averaged fewer than four per 90. It is difficult to envision a scenario where midfielders averaging fewer line-breaking passes than Tchouaméni improve Madrid’s ball distribution.Finding the new Toni Kroos is next to impossible. The German was not only a top tempo controller and leading line-breaking passer, but also a prolific long-range passer who in his final season at Madrid had a phenomenal 86.7% accuracy on long passes while distributing 9.4 per 90 minutes in La Liga and Champions. Ideally, Madrid would want to have someone in midfield that not only sets tempo, but also consistently provides incisive, long passes to its dynamic forward line that with the recent signing of Yan Diomandé now features three of the top six dribblers in Europe’s top five leagues last season.Madrid might very well decide to focus internally and confide in Güler or Bernardo Silva to be its next leader in the midfield rather than look to bring on a new signing. Güler’s more than six line-breaking passes per 90 minutes came despite playing in a more advanced role for part of the season – a position on the pitch where it is more complicated to find teammates between lines – and despite attempting nearly half (59.6) as many passes as Vitinha (116.4) per 90 minutes. Playing in a deeper role, one would expect the Turkish phenom to significantly increase the number of line-breaking passes he distributes to teammates. Güler also proved to be a strong long-range passer, achieving a 71.1% accuracy with long passes last season in La Liga + Champions League and completing 3.3 per 90 minutes. That is significantly higher accuracy on long passes and more completed long passes per 90 minutes than Wharton (48.2%, 2.4 per 90), Stiller (49.5%, 2.6 per 90), Zubimendi (50%, 1.7 per 90), Enzo Fernández (58.7%, 2.5 per 90) and Bernardo Silva (59%, 2.1 per 90). Again, playing in a deeper role on the pitch, we would expect Güler’s successful long passes to increase substantially.A last-minute insurance policy in the event that Güler or Bernardo Silva do not emerge as the solution in a deeper role (recall that Bernardo has played relatively little in that role having played more over his last 50 matches in advanced positions on the pitch than in a deeper role and questions persist about his long-range passing ability) would be to sign Aleix García from Leverkusen. The Spaniard completed over six long passes per 90 minutes last season in the Bundesliga/Champions, one of only three midfielders (alongside Vitinha and Kimmich) to average more than six successful long passes per 90 minutes in the top five league play and Champions League. García also posted an impressive 76.7% accuracy last season when attempting deep passes. The Villarreal youth product led La Liga in passes that switch the orientation of the field in 2023/2024, his final season at Girona, another indication of his long-range passing capability. A poor man’s Kroos, García combines being a tempo controller with excellent long-range passing ability.

Jaguars rookie trending upward at rapid rate
Jacksonville Jaguars' rookie offensive lineman Emmanuel Pregnon earned some opportunities with the starters during Tuesday's training camp practice.Pregnon was one of the standout performers during the Jaguars' preseason opener against New Orleans, and he's continued to trend upward since then. From the way Liam Coen described it recently, it does sound like the Jaguars would prefer to have Pregnon continue developing in a backup role. However, numerous injuries up front aren't giving Jacksonville that luxury at the moment. The Jaguars are currently without Chuma Edoga, Cole Van Lanen, Patrick Mekari, and Wyatt Milum. So to navigate these injuries, John Shipley of Jaguars on SI noted that a popular offensive line configuration on Tuesday consisted of Pregnon at left guard and Ezra Cleveland at right guard.Afterward, offensive coordinator Grant Udinski praised Pregnon's progress."He puts in a lot of extra work on his own time," Udinski said, via Jaguars on SI. "I see him in here at the facility. I'll take a stroll downstairs and it's 10 o'clock at night and I'm expecting it's only the cleaning crews around, but it's Emmanuel rolling around through the locker room, just finishing up his recovery work. So, I probably don't have enough good things to say about a guy like that.”In a short matter of time, Pregnon has gone from primarily working with the backups to being a part of the potential preferred starting five in this week's preseason game. That said, Jonah Monheim is another candidate to start at right guard, which would allow Cleveland to stay at left guard. In the long run, Milum's absence is expected to be brief, and Edoga could still return during camp. Cole Van Lanen potentially coming back before Week 1 changes things as well, allowing the Jaguars to move Walker Little to right guard. But regardless of how things shake out up front, Pregnon's play is a very promising development. This article originally appeared on Jaguars Wire: Jaguars rookie trending upward at rapid rate

The Bengals are giving Landon Robinson a chance to play on offense
Aug 13, 2026; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Landon Robinson (96) reacts after a play in the first half against the Detroit Lions at Paycor Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Katie Stratman-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Not many teams in the NFL utilize the fullback position as they did 20 years ago, but let’s imagine the Cincinnati Bengals manage to utilize one this season. It’s actually conceivable, and it comes in the form of a seventh-round draft pick.Landon Robinson was seemingly on the Bengals’ radar from the Senior Bowl. Sure enough, the Bengals drafted the defensive tackle from Navy and an Ohio native in the seventh round this past April. Robinson shined in the preseason opener last Thursday, showing a ferocity to get into the offensive backfield and disrupt the flow of the play the opposing offense is trying to run. However, the Bengals have a deep defensive line, so they may find another way to keep Robinson on the 53-man roster: Giving him reps at fullback.5. We got our first look at rookie DT Landon Robinson as a short yardage fullback. His block on Demetrius Knight (#44) helped pave the way for a Samaje Perine TD.“Coach Pitcher came to me and said, ‘Hey Landon, have you ever played fullback?’” said Robinson. “I was able to sit… pic.twitter.com/KsHSbUa8xN— Dan Hoard (@Dan_Hoard) August 18, 2026Robinson at fullback? Before you quickly dismiss this notion, remember that Domata Peko came in multiple times and acted as a fullback in goal-line situations. A guy like Robinson can play a similar role.“Coach Pitcher came to me and said, ‘Hey Landon, have you ever played fullback?’” said Robinson. “I was able to sit in on a couple of offensive meetings, and he installed the goal-line package. “The quickness I use at D-line kind of translates to fullback. Low center of gravity and boom! I think it worked out pretty well.”Even being a blocker for Chase Brown or Samaje Perine down near the goal line can provide great value for the Bengals. Versatility is a great asset for any seventh-round pick trying to make the 53-man roster, and it looks like Robinson is showing just that in training camp.

South Korea says the South Korean and US militaries have agreed to shorten their drills

(AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon)2026-08-19T00:53:41Z SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The South Korean and U.S. militaries have agreed to shorten their drills at the U.S.'s request, South Korean officials said Wednesday, days after President Donald Trump ordered cuts to the exercises. The allies’ summertime Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises began Monday morning for an 11-day run, just after Trump ordered his Pentagon chief to “substantially reduce” them. Trump cited what he said was a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s refusal to join the U.S. war against Iran.South Korea’s military said in a statement the ongoing drills with the U.S. would end Friday, not Aug. 27 as initially planned. It said the allies also agreed to downsize some joint field training exercises. Many experts say Trump’s move threatens to hurt combined U.S.-South Korean readiness and eventually weaken their decades-long alliance.North Korea hasn’t responded to Trump’s overture. But earlier Wednesday, its state news agency slammed the U.S.-South Korean military drills as “frantic” and “extremely dangerous” and vowed to completely frustrate its rivals’ hostilities.

After deadly floods in India’s Assam, experts call for better warnings and long-term planning
A man wades through floodwater as State Deserter Response Force (SDRF) personnel travel on a boat headed to rescue affected people after heavy monsoon rain in Guwahati, India, July 24, 2026. (AP Photo/Anupam Nath, File)2026-08-19T01:02:52Z GUWAHATI, India (AP) — Rojo Neog left his house in India’s Assam state on the evening of July 19 to buy candles after heavy rain knocked out electricity. As he rode back on his bicycle, the Dikhow River suddenly rose and the current intensified. The floodwaters swept him away, and his body was found three days later, said his niece Priyakshi Gogoi, who lives nearby. Gogoi said floodwaters around her uncle’s village Hulang Katoni rose from knee-deep to neck-deep in about 30 minutes.“There was no warning, nothing,” she said. “In the morning we thought it’s fine, there is little flooding but it will subside, but we didn’t expect it to become so bad.”More than 100 people have died in flooding in Assam this year in what state officials have described as its worst flooding in about six decades. While flooding is frequent in Assam, climate and disaster experts said increasingly intense rainfall, sand mining, upstream deforestation, wetland loss, urbanization and heavy reliance on embankments are making floods more unpredictable and destructive. Experts said Assam and other states upstream must move beyond spending millions of dollars on flood-control structures and relief toward better early warnings, scientific mapping of changing risks and restoring the ability of forests, wetlands and floodplains to absorb water.“It’s very important to study and understand flood risks better in Assam,” said Himanshu Thakkar, coordinator of the environmental group, South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People. “Once we understand, we can also forecast well. Then we can prepare well and less people will be affected. India is very good at rescuing people or providing relief after the disaster, but is particularly bad in doing anything significant to reduce the possibilities of such disasters.” Each year from June to September, a series of heavy rains known as monsoons sweep through India, providing relief from heat, irrigating the country’s farms and replenishing its rivers. However, as global heat increases, the rain is becoming more erratic and intense, creating the conditions for deadly floods. India, one of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters, is also among the hardest hit by climate change. Assam state is among India’s most flood-prone, with about 40% of its land vulnerable to inundation from the Brahmaputra River and smaller rivers. Read More Floodwaters rose in minutesThe floods have displaced more than 700,000 people and submerged farmland while damaging roads and other infrastructure. Although many residents have begun returning home as floodwaters recede, thousands remain in relief camps.Krishna Karamkar jumped into floodwaters on July 19 when one of his two sons inadvertently fell into the overflowing Dikhow, which is a tributary of the Brahmaputra. The 42-year-old was able to save his son, but he perished. “He pushed our son to safety, but he got swept away by the river,” said Sumi Karamkar, his wife. The family lives in Nepalikhuti village, one of the worst affected with over 1,000 animals washed away and 200 houses destroyed. “I am now staying at my mother’s home nearby. I have received some assistance from the government but that’s not enough. Our family’s future has suddenly become so uncertain,” she said. In Bihubor village, 26-year-old Shravan Kumar said he took his parents to higher ground and returned with relatives and five boats to rescue neighbors. Kumar said people were clinging to trees and rescuers had to break through a home’s roof to pull out two children and their parents.“I have grown up in the area and have never seen such severe flooding before,” Kumar said in a phone interview.River experts said flooding has long replenished farmland and shaped farming and settlement patterns across Assam. But they said increasingly intense bursts of rain combined with other human-caused factors can overwhelm rivers and communities more quickly, leaving less time to react. In Nepalikhuti village in Assam, dairy farmer Prakash Sharma said he had finished milking his 24 cows in the morning when people began talking about the Dikhow rising.By 10 a.m., the only road out of the village was submerged. Sharma said he put a ladder against his house and helped his 75-year-old father and 65-year-old mother onto the roof. By about 1:30 p.m., he said, the village was under roughly 9 feet of water. “Some were taking shelter on rooftops, some on trees,” Sharma said. “For me, it was not just floods, it was a natural calamity of humongous proportion we had never seen before.”While Sharma’s family was saved by rescuers that afternoon, he said he’s still grappling with the tremendous losses he suffered.India has expanded flood forecasting and early-warning systems, but researchers said forecasting is only useful if information reaches the people at risk, they understand it and have somewhere safe to go.Mirza Zulfiqar Rahman, an independent researcher who has studied the Brahmaputra, said warnings sometimes fail to travel from government offices into communities and are rarely paired with enough drills and preparedness. Experts urge a shift from controlling rivers to living with themA recent report by World Weather Attribution said the flooding across Assam and neighboring northeastern states was worsened by rapid urbanization, deforestation and local vulnerabilities. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries carry enormous amounts of sediment from the Himalayas, continually reshaping channels, banks and river islands. River experts said this makes seasonal flooding difficult to eliminate, but human changes to the landscape have increased the danger. Sneha Ganguly of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Center, a co-author of the WWA report, said research increasingly points to unplanned urbanization, deforestation, degraded wetlands, poor drainage and inadequate flood management as factors that worsen flood risk.Assam has invested heavily in embankments, erosion-control structures, flood walls and other engineering. Experts said such infrastructure remains necessary in some places but can create additional risks if natural drainage isn’t preserved. “True adaptation requires moving towards living with rivers through wetland restoration and proactive early action before floodwaters strike,” said Emmanuel Raju, director of the Copenhagen Centre for Disaster Research at the University of Copenhagen who also worked on the WWA report.Rahman, the independent researcher, said flood planning should follow the natural contours of river basins rather than state and international borders. Rainfall, deforestation, mining and other changes upstream can alter how quickly water and sediment reach the Brahmaputra basin.Disaster management, he said, also remains too heavily focused on flooding aftermath, rather than reducing risks beforehand. Nihal Ranjit, a climate and disaster expert at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements, said communities in historically flood-prone areas once structured farming and daily life around seasonal inundation. Climate change is pushing some events beyond what people are accustomed to and able to cope with, causing people to move, he said.“This always existed, but climate change and climate impacts like floods are increasing this movement,” said Ranjit.___Arasu reported from Bengaluru, India, and can be followed on X at @sibi123. Once shaped by court rituals, China’s imperial cuisine lives on today
Chef Zhou Tong makes the minced pork pancake at Fangshan Restaurant inside Beihai Park in Beijing on July 23, 2026. (AP Photo/Andy Wong)2026-08-19T01:43:56Z BEIJING (AP) — It is said that Empress Dowager Cixi once dreamed of a pastry during the final decades of imperial China. The same treat was served to her at breakfast the following morning. Delighted, she summoned her chef and rewarded him with a silver ingot.“It was originally called ‘minced pork pancake,’ but because it had fulfilled her dream, it later became known as ‘dream pastry,’” said Zhou Tong, a chef at Fangshan Restaurant in Beijing.Fangshan specializes in imperial cuisine, preserving dishes like the one associated with Cixi and other culinary traditions from China’s imperial court. The restaurant was founded in 1925 by former chefs from the Qing Dynasty at Beihai Park, a garden where royals from several dynasties rested, handled government affairs and performed ritual sacrifices.“The name Fangshan literally means ‘imitating the imperial cuisine,’” said assistant general manager Di Xin.A handful of other Beijing restaurants also serve versions of imperial cuisine, while the Palace Museum preserves Qing-dynasty objects tied to court dining, including pastry molds. Every meal comes with its own rulesImperial cuisine encompasses the meals emperors ate daily and the feasts their courts held throughout the year. Each had its own rituals. Drinking milk tea, for instance, was an important first step at Qing-dynasty banquets, said Teng Deyong, a researcher at China’s Palace Museum.During the banquet, the emperor bestowed wine or food on princes and officials. Recipients performed rites and paid their respects to him before they ate or drank.Aside from banquets, sacrificial rituals were held. They followed a separate system and could involve meat offerings. “At the Palace of Earthly Tranquillity, there was the eating of sacrificial pork, which we know was one of the most important rituals of the Qing imperial court,” Teng said. Read More In that ritual, fatty pork was boiled without salt. After the ceremony, it was distributed among guests, and receiving the sacrificial meat was considered a great honor.Unseasoned food also appears in earlier Chinese ritual traditions. Wandi Wang, a professor of Chinese at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, said the “Book of Rites,” a classical work on rites and ceremonies, describes a meat broth known as “grand stew” that was served without seasoning during sacrificial ceremonies.“The absence of added flavoring was itself meaningful: the unseasoned dish evoked an earlier and simpler way of cooking and thus expressed a ritual ideal of honoring antiquity and remembering cultural origins,” Wang said. Traditional techniques keep imperial pastry-making alivePastries were key to imperial cuisine, and the court had an institution specialized in making them. Sweets made at Fangshan by Zhou include Cixi’s dream pastry and a small steamed corn bun. Their recipes are rooted in the imperial court.“When customers visit, our servers often tell them the stories behind these dishes,” Zhou said. “People enjoy them even more because they carry such meaningful history.”He learned his pastry-making technique from a master who had also learned from a mentor. It’s a craft that has been passed from one generation to the next.Traditional imperial methods mean cooking must be done by hand — no blenders or food processors are allowed. Ingredients like beans are pulverized using sieves and certain flours are handled in custom-made copper pots. “A machine may be more convenient, but the texture is completely different,” Zhou said. “You lose the delicate graininess and sandy mouthfeel that handcrafted pastries are supposed to have.”Among Fangshan’s bestselling delicacies are the pea flour cake and the red bean roll. During the busy season, customers order more than 200 of the cakes per day.Balancing ancient cooking methods with a changing worldWhen he joined Fangshan as a kitchen apprentice, now-executive chef Fan Liangliang had to relearn everything he was taught at culinary school. Rather than employing techniques that allowed him to work quickly, he embraced slower processes he had never heard of.One of them is “Nizihuo,” which Fan said involves mincing ingredients such as fish, shrimp or chicken into a smooth paste. It is then reshaped into decorative forms such as frogs, birds and flowers. “This is one of the hallmarks of imperial cuisine,” Fan said. “Every dish had to be innovative, visually beautiful, nutritious and worthy of presentation on the imperial dining table.”Rare ingredients such as bear paws are no longer served. Fan said adaptations are made to retain the spirit of each dish.Chinese cuisine has long reflected cultural values, politics and idealsA celebrated Chinese poet once wrote about cold noodles made with pagoda-tree leaves.“The poem is not simply a description of a dish,” Wang said. “Du Fu turns the verdant, fresh, yet modest dish into an expression of his political loyalty and thwarted ambition to serve the emperor.”She added that Chinese cuisine has historically carried meaning beyond food, reflecting broader ideas about politics, culture and aesthetics that have evolved as circumstances changed.“Preserving a culinary tradition begins with taking its history seriously,” Wang said. “Culinary heritage tells us not only how people ate in the past, but also how people in the present choose to remember and give meaning to that past.” Chef Fan said that at the heart of Fangshan’s imperial cuisine is a fusion of Manchu and Han culinary traditions, bringing together the culture of the Qing rulers and that of China’s majority population.“It’s not simply a collection of dishes from the two cultures,” he said. “It represents the blending of their different approaches to food into a unified cuisine.”Some inherited techniques such as stir-frying, braising and stewing have survived. And while some ingredients have been substituted both for availability reasons and to suit modern tastes, Fan said his team’s commitment to Chinese heritage remains strong.“When people dine at Fangshan Restaurant, I hope they experience more than just a meal,” Fan said. “They experience the weight of history.”___AP video journalist Wu Jia contributed to this report.___Associated Press religion coverage receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. Aces coach Becky Hammon ejected after erupting on officials over missed call on A'ja Wilson in game vs. Dream
Becky Hammon picked up two quick technical fouls and was ejected in the second quarter on Tuesday night.IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect / REUTERSBecky Hammon let the officials have it on Tuesday night, and didn’t make it to halftime. The Las Vegas Aces head coach was thrown out in the second quarter of their game with the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday after erupting on officials over what she felt was a missed call. Hammon, after a short jumper from Angel Reese was off the mark near the midway point of the period, suddenly charged toward the official complaining about a missed call while play went the other way. That earned her a quick technical foul. But Hammon didn’t stop there. She continued to scream at the official, and had to be held back by several assistants and star A’ja Wilson as she picked up her second technical. That led to her automatic ejection.Becky Hammon has been ejected.pic.twitter.com/9h6J8pzYHk— Underdog WNBA (@UnderdogWNBA) August 19, 2026The issue, it seems, stemmed from what Hammon clearly thought was a missed foul call on Wilson on the other end.Becky Hammon gets ejected with a double technical after she crashes out on the refs for not calling the foul for A'ja Wilson. pic.twitter.com/YSawFEeo5G— Ashwin (@Sudharsan_ak) August 19, 2026Hammon is in her fifth season leading the Aces this summer. Brian Flores's lawyers seek information from NFL about Jon Gruden, Colin Kaepernick cases
The lawsuit filed by Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores against the NFL and various teams has finally moved forward (as to several of the pending claims) to the discovery process. Which gives Flores's lawyers a certain degree of latitude to seek information that could help prove one or more of his claims. As noted by Daniel Kaplan, Flores has asked the NFL to produce documents relating to the Jon Gruden and Colin Kaepernick cases. The NFL is resisting.“Requests concerning Colin Kaepernick and Jon Gruden, along with other requests raised by Flores at the August 14 conference, are likewise not relevant or discoverable,” the NFL’s outside counsel wrote to the court, per Kaplan. On the surface, there's no connection to the Flores cases. To the extent, however, that his claim against the Texans arises from the argument that he wasn't hired to coach the team in retaliation for his recent filing of a race discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, the Dolphins, the Giants, and the Broncos, the Kaepernick case becomes arguably relevant.Like Kaepernick, Flores claims he was essentially blackballed via collusion of the franchises. While Flores has found employment as an assistant with the Steelers and Vikings, Flores has consistently been overlooked for head-coaching jobs. It's harder to connect the Flores case to the Gruden case. Gruden claims he was targeted by whoever deliberately leaked confidential documents in an effort to force him out as the Raiders' coach. Gruden isn't claiming that he had engaged in protected behavior for which someone retaliated against him, or that multiple teams decided to not do business with him. His case is about someone wanting him out — and about someone weaponizing emails from the Washington investigation to make it happen.Obviously, Gruden had pissed someone off sufficiently enough to get that person to try to take him down. Absent evidence that someone was retaliating against Gruden for doing something that insulated him against being forced out, or that the teams colluded not to hire him after he sued, it will be hard to connect the Gruden case to the Flores case for the purposes of getting documents regarding the Gruden case to use in the Flores case.

Ronnie Bell carted off because of heat as fights break out during Saints-Cowboys joint practice

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)2026-08-19T01:38:58Z OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — New Orleans wide receiver Ronnie Bell was carted off the field because of the effects of Southern California heat after being involved in one of several fights during a chippy joint practice between the Saints and Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday.“He just had to go inside for a little bit. He just got a little bit overheated,” New Orleans coach Kellen Moore said.Bell walked to the trainer’s tent following a second brawl between the Saints offense and Cowboys defense. Several minutes later, he was put onto a cart with his jersey and shoulder pads off. Bell was alert and sitting up as he was driven off the field.Bell is going into his fourth season in the NFL out of Michigan. He has 10 receptions for 113 yards and four touchdowns in 28 games with the San Francisco 49ers and Saints.Temperatures were in the high 70s Fahrenheit (around 25 Celsius) and it felt hotter because of unusually high humidity for the region caused by El Nino, seemingly exacerbating the intensity of a two-hour workout that nearly devolved into chaos on multiple occasions. The early fracases happened on the field closest to fans where the Cowboys offense and Saints defense were scrimmaging.Tensions carried over to the far field, where Dallas outside linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku got into a confrontation with several New Orleans players before teammates surrounded them in a massive scrum, with Saints center Erik McCoy throwing a Cowboys helmet high into the air. Ezeiruaku and McCoy later came to blows, leading to the second-year defender from Boston College being ejected for throwing punches. It was the second time in training camp that Ezeiruaku has been booted for fisticuffs. He was ejected from a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants for pulling a helmet off an offensive lineman. Read More “We’ll have a long conversation, you know,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “Donovan’s a very bright young man, and, again, he understands he can’t hurt the football team. It’s part of a growth mindset for him.”At the same time, Schottenheimer indicated an appreciation for players being willing to stand up for themselves and their teammates. “To be very, very clear, we’re not taking (expletive) from anybody, but we also have to have the discipline to not play over the edge and hurt the football team, get penalties, do things like that,” he said.In spite of those outbursts, Moore was largely pleased with the work the Saints did in the first of two joint practices this week. They will work with the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday.“Not the ideal flow of the joint practice, but we got the work that we needed,” Moore said.Schottenheimer was less than thrilled.“Honestly, I got to go look at the film ’cause I was playing referee the whole time,” Schottenheimer said. “Our football team needs this work, and overall, I was disappointed in the work today because I didn’t think we got enough good work. I thought there were too many bodies on the ground, and it just felt sloppy to me.”Mix-up leads to jersey change for SaintsThe Cowboys offense and Saints defense both came onto the field wearing white jerseys because of a miscommunication, prompting New Orleans staffers to scramble to find contrasting black tops.“My last name is Tyree today, and you could mistake me for a receiver,” linebacker Pete Werner joked, wearing a slim-cut No. 89 jersey instead of his usual No. 20. “I actually like the number, it’s a little small, it’s kind of snug, so it felt pretty good. I felt fast.” Saints RB Kamara injuredSaints running back Alvin Kamara left practice early because of a knee injury, and cornerback Quincy Riley departed with a groin injury. Moore did not immediately know the severity of those injuries.___See AP’s full NFL coverage here

🎥 São Paulo end drought, knock out Bolívar, face Boca nextThe quarterfinal stage of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana will indeed feature a major "Libertadores showdown."After Boca Juniors crushed Paraguay’s Recoleta 7-1 on aggregate, São Paulo did its part against Bolívar this Tuesday (18) in front of 42,087 fans.It won 3-1 at MorumBIS, advancing 4-2 on aggregate. It was the end of a six-match winless run after 21 games without scoring at least three goals. The focus now shifts to a turnaround in the Brazilian Championship.Check out the highlights soon. Well-worked move and SPFC take the leadDorival’s team’s mission was to overcome its own inconsistency, control the action, and then let its greatest quality shine through. All it took was one precise passing sequence and players competently “attacking the space” for the Tricolor to go in front.Iago played it to Danielzinho, and Luciano scored his 114th goal for the Tricolor. Iago had a good chance to extend the lead, SPFC did drop back at times, but it went into halftime deserving its advantage.A scare and... Calleri gets them! The Tricolor fans went through some tense minutes. The chance Luciano failed to take soon proved costly after the Tricolor defense failed to stop Asprilla from receiving the ball unmarked and leveling the score (61').But the relief did not take long to come. Echeverría intercepted the ball with his left hand, which resulted in a penalty. And the revitalized Calleri converted it (68').Peace of mind finally came thanks to Sabino in the air (76'). What now❓São Paulo will face the already mentioned Boca Juniors in the Sudamericana quarterfinals. The matches will be played between September 8 and 17.A possible semifinal opponent would be River Plate, Santa Fe, Independiente Olimpia, or Vasco. The Tricolor will be back in action on Sunday (23), when it visits Chapecoense. It is now nine rounds without a win in the Brazilian Championship. A’s Blow Late Lead, Fall To Royals 4-3
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - AUGUST 18: Jeff McNeil #22 of the Athletics reacts after being tagged out at home plate by catcher Carter Jensen #22 of the Kansas City Royals while trying to score during the 1st inning of the game at Kauffman Stadium on August 18, 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Athletics’ blew another late lead on Tuesday night in Kansas City, allowing three runs in the bottom of the ninth to let an easy win slip right through their fingers. This one hurt.Facing Kansas City left-hander Daniel Lynch IV tonight, the A’s got to work right away against the reliever-turned-starter. Zack Gelof drew a one-out walk to spark the first-inning rally and was immediately followed by a Jeff McNeil single and another walk to Jonah Heim. That loaded the bases and brought up rookie infielder Tommy White. A productive out would have been fine but the A’s ideally needed a hit, and White delivered with a base knock to left field to drive home one:Tommy Tanks drives one home, but McNeil is caught trying to make it two pic.twitter.com/JwRpiTpQ4T— Athletics on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) August 18, 2026McNeil got a bit greedy behind Gelof trying to score and was gunned down at the plate. That took the air out of the rally and the A’s would ultimately only come away with one. Felt like they left some meat on the bone there. That one run was enough for the Athletics’ pitching early. Righty Jack Perkins was initially slated to start but a late change saw left-hander Brady Basso get the ball for the first couple frames. He had a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the first then allowed one harmless single in the second. Pressing his luck, Mark Kotsay sent Basso back out for the third and Basso allowed another hit but also got one more out before getting pulled for Perkins.Perkins was just as effective as Basso. He finished the third inning and would end up pitching through the sixth inning. He’d only allow two base runners in his work tonight, looking sharper as the game went on. He ended his night on a massive high, striking out the side in the sixth including an inning-ending punchout of Royals star Bobby Witt Jr.Jack Perkins: 3 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 53 pitchesA much better performance from him tonight. The opener strategy worked to perfection and that’s got to be the strategy next time his turn comes up. Fingers crossed he can use tonight’s quality outing and build on it over the final few weeks of the season. He’s “lined up” to pitch next in Houston against the Astros.Back to the offense, things went quite for a few innings after that quick first inning run, with just one drawn walk between the second and fifth frames. It wasn’t until the top of the sixth did the A’s finally get those much-needed insurance runs. Henry Bolte smacked a leadoff single for the A’s third hit of the night, Gelof drew his second walk, and then it was McNeil coming through again with an RBI hit to make it 2-0 A’s:My name is Jeff 💥 pic.twitter.com/hEFWTIe13f— Athletics on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) August 19, 2026The A’s would add on another run in the frame thanks to a bases-loaded walk to Max Muncy. That made it 3-0 A’s and with the way the pitching was rolling it felt like the A’s could finally enjoy the final frames of a win.One of the newest members of the bullpen Drew Rom replaced Perkins for the seventh. The left-hander only faced three batters with two of them collecting doubles to make it 3-1. No cruising for the A’s tonight after all. Kotsay immediately came and got him, asking Luis Medina to put out the fire. Medina did just that, coming through by getting two groundball outs to escape the jam. Still a two-run lead and six outs to go.Medina stayed in for a quick bottom of the eighth and got two outs but also put two on with free passes. That brought out Hogan Harris for an extended save chance. First he ended the Royals’ threat by getting the final out of the eighth, then it was time for the ninth.Things did not go as planned. The Royals were able to load the bases with one out thanks to a catcher’s interference, a single and a walk. Then a two-run RBI single tied this game and then Bobby Witt Jr. walked it off for the Royals. A’s lose.A disgusting end to this game. The A’s were three outs away from their 50th win and instead allowed three runs. Unacceptable and tough to think about. Need to flush this one as fast as possible. It hasn’t been announced yet but tomorrow’s game lines up for a Gage Jump start. If the 23-year-old makes his scheduled appearance it’ll be his 16th of the year. He’s coming off a decent outing against the Rangers when he pitched into the sixth and allowed three runs, but only collected one punchout compared to four walks. He’ll try to clean things up tomorrow against a weaker KC lineup. The Royals, like the Athletics, haven’t announced their starting pitcher yet but if they stick with the regular rotation it’ll be veteran right-hander Seth Lugo making his 26th start. He’s been serviceable as a back-end type of pitcher for the past couple of years but at 36 he’s beginning to slow down. The righty will bring a 4.58 ERA into tomorrow night’s contest.

    Two-A-Days: Okoboji Pioneers
OKOBOJI, Iowa (KCAU) - Last season was one to rembember for Okoboji football as the Pioneers secured the team's most wins in a single season since 2008, but the team is far from satisfied.Okoboji rolled into mid-October with a 7-0 record, but tumbled in the team's final two games - including a double-digit loss at home to Unity Christian in the first round of the IHSAA 2A Playoffs.Leading rusher and top returning receiver Asa Jacobsen is back to pace the Pioneers while quarterback Trey Vander Pol is back after throwing for over 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. Okoboji returns all but six carries from a year ago.The Pioneers have turned the page on last season, but are motivated to go even further."We felt like we were on top of the world all season. In those those last two games of the season, they suck. But they definitely helped to prepare us for this year. They got us in that mental state that we talk about trying to push past that and get the kids going next year," Jacobsen said. We've got a lot of key pieces back and a lot of guys that are bought in. You can sense the buzz around the town coming into the football season and we're excited to go win some more games this year.""We're really excited. We're just looking to compete and kind of build off what we had last year. But also we've got some new guys coming up and are really excited about that," Okoboji wide receiver and defensive back Miles Wasson added. "It's kind of just bringing us already a group of guys who have been through it and kind of some different leaders. But we're also looking for guys who can step up into that role."Okoboji begins the campaign at home against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on August 28th. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. Bears QB Caleb Williams shares why he paints his nails
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams does not care what people think about his painted nails. It has arguably evolved into his personal expression and identity in the NFL.How did it all start? He went to a nail salon with an ex-girlfriend in college and decided to give it a try.MORE: Chicago Bears shoot down claim team will change name to reflect possible Indiana move“I know who I am. I know what I like,” Williams said.Williams eventually painted several nails at a time. He even used them to troll opponents. At one point, he put “F*** Texas” and a horns-down symbol on his nails.Williams let it rip during his “The Rush Podcast” appearance with Maxx Crosby and Brogan Roback.“The nails thing is just something I used to do,” Williams said. “It used to be a little bit more of a motivation thing. Now I do cool designs on it. Now I do supportive things. I’ve done the mental health number on it, suicide prevention number, breast cancer awareness. “It’s like wearing pink cleats and pink headbands. It’s just gel on my nails. KANSAS CITY, Mo. Elvis Alvarado replaced Harris and got Isaac Collins to line out before Witt blooped a single into left for the Royals' sixth walk-off win of the season. The Athletics took an early lead as Zack Gelof drew a first-inning walk, and Jonah Heim drew another to load the bases. Klassen deals, two-out rallies lead Angels to win in Houston
George Klassen #58 of the Los Angeles Angels throws a pitch during an MLB game against the Texas Rangers on August 12, 2026 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.Rookie right-hander George Klassen is beginning to figure out how to succeed at the big-league level. The 24-year-old may never have been touted as a top-100 prospect by either MLB Pipeline or Baseball America, but he was always regarded as an intriguing prospect for his electric stuff and shaky command. In his second stint in the big leagues this season, his command has tightened up, and he's showing the type of ceiling he has. Klassen pitched the best start of his very young big-league career Tuesday night in Houston when he tossed seven shutout innings on only one hit in the Angels’ 3-1 win over the Astros. He needed only two pitches to dominate the Astros in this one. Klassen primarily used his fastball and slider, with the slider being the biggest weapon in his arsenal. It didn’t matter if Klassen’s slider was in the strike zone or not; it was unhittable. Hitters whiffed at his slider in 12 out of 20 swings and only hit one ball hard out of five balls put in play. Klassen also featured an upper-90s fastball that sat at 96.7 mph and topped out at 99.2 mph. The only hit he allowed on the night was off his fastball back in the first inning. Klassen struck out seven with three walks. Since rejoining the Angels’ rotation at the beginning of the month, Klassen has a 1.59 ERA in three starts with 15 strikeouts and eight walks in 17 innings pitched. The Angels’ offense thrived with two outs, recording a two-out hit after making an out in the first two batters of the inning four innings in a row, as well as scoring all three of their runs with two outs. Only one of their eight hits on the night came with less than two outs. Wade Meckler got things started in the third inning with a two-out single. He stole second base and then scored on Nolan Schanuel’s RBI single. The following inning, Josh Lowe belted his 10th home run of the season into the Crawford Boxes in left field, which also came with two outs. Then in the fifth, it was Schanuel’s turn to get things started with two outs with a single. He scored the next batter when Zach Neto’s double off the wall in left field kicked back toward the infield, out of the reach of Astros left fielder Taylor Trammell.

Sophie Cunningham reacts after getting booed by sold-out crowd
Aug 11, 2026; Indianapolis, Indiana, USA; Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) celebrates a made shot in the second half against the New York Liberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Mandatory Credit: Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn ImagesIndiana Fever reserve guard Sophie Cunningham has become one of the most controversial figures in the WNBA. Cunningham is having a career year from the three-point line, but the vast majority of the discourse surrounding her has focused on comments she made in a July 21 ESPN profile.“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” she said in the profile. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”Many around the league, including several head coaches and even her own, Stephanie White, spoke about embracing inclusivity for all people after the comments sparked intense debate. Some fans became staunch supporters of Cunningham’s in the aftermath of the controversy, while others have become some of her biggest haters. She found a lot of the latter when the Fever visited Canada to face the Toronto Tempo in front of a sold out crowd at Scotiabank Arena, where they rained boos down on her after she entered the game.Sophie Cunningham getting boo’d in Toronto pic.twitter.com/Q1RrecL00H— Shabazz (@ShowCaseShabazz) August 18, 2026After the game, Cunningham discussed the boos gracefully in her press conference.“I want to shout out the Tempo crowd and the city,” Cunningham said. “We’ve had so much. It’s my first time being in Canada. It’s a lot of our first times being in Canada, but the crowd was absolutely amazing. I think that’s what sports is all about. You’re going to get boos, and you’re going to get cheers, but just the fact that they’re so passionate and they’re loud and they’re putting on for the city, I think it’s absolutely amazing.”Sophie Cunningham on getting boos tonight in Toronto:“The crowd was absolutely amazing. Mike LaFleur missed out on more joint practices
The Arizona Cardinals will have a joint practice with the Green Bay Packers next week, their only joint practice of the preseason. If head coach Mike LaFleur had his way, they would have more. "I would love to do two joint practices," he told reporters on Tuesday. "I'd love to do three joint practices."For him, "you get two joint practices in, that's the equivalent of playing the two preseason (games), because it is a heightened, amped up environment. You're not tackling, but it's just, it's the amped up environment that you get."Additionally, "for some reason, the data says if you end up having those joint practices, you have a lower injury risk going into the first four weeks of the season."So why didn't the Cardinals have more joint practices this year? It wasn't for a lack of trying. LaFleur tried scheduling them right after he was hired in February. He found out "a lot of those coaches that were already hired already had their joint practices." He learned that he will need to call and schedule those joint practices immediately following the season. He is aware why the Cardinals never host joint practices. There isn't enough space at State Farm Stadium to handle two 90-man rosters, and practicing outside in August just isn't something any team would want to do. Next preseason, the Cardinals will have two home games, so they will only have one road opportunity to hold a joint practice, unless they were to hold one in Flagstaff like they used to do before 2013. The downside to not having joint practices is that players then need to get preseason reps. So that is why the Cardinals starters played last week and will likely play this weekend. Erin Patterson appeals 3 murder convictions in Australia over death cap mushroom lunch
Erin Patterson is escorted away from the Supreme Court of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, on Sept. 8, 2025. (Joel Carrett/AAP Image via AP, File)2026-08-19T03:09:03Z MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Triple-murderer Erin Patterson appealed her convictions Wednesday for poisoning four of her estranged husband’s relatives with death cap mushrooms.Three judges of the Victoria state Court of Appeal are hearing her appeal over two days against her convictions on three counts of murder and one of attempted murder relating to a lunch of beef Wellington pastries she prepared at her rural home in Leongatha in July 2023.Prosecutors are appealing the leniency of her sentence. The 51-year-old was sentenced in September last year to life in prison and must serve at least 33 years behind bars before she can apply for release on parole.Prosecutors want her to be sentenced for life without possibility of parole.Defense lawyer Richard Edney’s first ground for appeal Wednesday was an error that resulted in jury members being sequestered in the same hotel as a police witness and members of the prosecution team. “This was a very serious breach of sequestration,” Edney told the court.Another defense lawyer, Veronika Drago, said there was no evidence that Patterson had read online posts that reported death cap mushrooms had been seen near the towns of Loch and Outtrim. The trial heard evidence from a telecommunications expert that Patterson’s phone connected to towers near Outtrim and Loch. Drago said the evidence was that Patterson’s phone had possibly been in the area.“That in and of itself, in our submission, illustrates just how dangerous and unfair that evidence was” on Patterson’s trial, Drago said. Read More Another ground for appeal was that Prosecutor Nanette Rogers’ cross-examination of Patterson over five days had been “unfair and oppressive.”The defense team also argued that trial judge Christopher Bale had caused “unfair prejudice” by allowing evidence from Patterson’s Facebook “friends” into the trial.Patterson’s estranged husband, Simon Patterson, was invited to the fatal lunch but did not attend. His parents, Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, died. Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson, spent weeks in hospital, but survived. Patterson argued during her trial that the poisoning was an accident. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. If her appeal succeeds, the judges could overturn her convictions and order a retrial.Patterson did not attend court on Wednesday and watched the hearing by video in prison. In pretrial testimony only made public after her trial, Simon Patterson said he suspected his wife had deliberately made him seriously ill with dishes. No poisons were ever found.Erin Patterson was initially charged with three counts of attempting to murder him on three occasions around Victoria between November 2021 and September 2022. She had denied all charges.Prosecutors dropped all charges relating to the husband before her trial began in April 2025. Shares fall in Asia, with Kospi down 5.2%, while oil prices jump
A currency trader passes by a screen showing the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) at the foreign exchange dealing room of the Hana Bank headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. (AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon)2026-08-19T03:05:37Z BANGKOK (AP) — Shares slipped Wednesday in Asia after Wall Street pulled further from its all-time high as artificial-intelligence stocks resumed their decline. South Korea’s Kospi led the regional retreat, dropping 5.2% to 6,515.97. The two biggest companies benefiting from the AI boom tracked losses for their U.S. rivals. Samsung Electronics shed 6.9%, while memory chipmaker SK Hynix tumbled 7.9%.In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 sank 2.6% to 65,703.78. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong lost 0.4% to 25,382.66, while the Shanghai Composite index shed 1.5% to 3,927.70. Taiwan’s Taiex fell 1.4%, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.4% to 9,083.70. Apart from renewed jitters over criticism that AI-related stocks have shot too high, rising oil prices also were clouding market sentiment. Crude prices have been swinging sharply due to uncertainty about when and whether the United States and Iran can reach a deal to allow oil tankers to exit the Persian Gulf freely again. Brent was going for $72.87 per barrel just before the start of the war. Brent crude, the international standard, surged 0.9% to $91.83 per barrel. U.S. benchmark crude oil gained 1% to $84.88 per barrel On Tuesday, Wall Street pulled further from its all-time high. The S&P 500 fell 0.7% for a third straight modest loss. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.2%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 1.3%. Stocks that have been big winners in the boom around AI technology led the decline. They’ve been veering up and down this summer on worries that their prices have shot too high and that the strong demand for memory, processors and other building blocks of data centers may fizzle if AI proves less profitable than promised.Micron Technology dropped 7%, and the seller of computer memory was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500. So were chip companies Nvidia, which fell 2.3%, and Broadcom, which sank 3.2%. Read More Even with their recent swings, such stocks remain big winners, and Micron has more than tripled this year. Bond yields have been another concern. They have jumped since the war began because high oil prices are pushing inflation higher. That adds to worries over huge debt loads for governments, while surging borrowing keeps yields high. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury edged down to 4.70% from 4.72% late Monday but remains well above its 3.97% level from just before the war with Iran began. The 30-year Treasury yield also ticked lower but is still near its highest level since 2007. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. When bond yields are high, investors are less willing to pay high prices for stocks and other kinds of investments, particularly those seen as the most expensive.High yields have already sent the average long-term U.S. mortgage rate near its highest level in a year, which has hurt the housing industry. A report on Tuesday said homebuilders broke ground on fewer new houses last month than economists expected.High yields could also slow borrowing by Big Tech companies to pay for data centers, threatening a big source of growth for the U.S. economy. In other dealings early Wednesday, the U.S. dollar fell to 159.37 Japanese yen from 159.59 yen. The euro rose to $1.1582 from $1.1574.___AP Business Writer Stan Choe contributed to this report. Brewers match baseball’s modern-era record for biggest shutout, beating Mariners 22-0
Milwaukee Brewers' David Hamilton rounds the bases after hitting a three-run home run during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Seattle Mariners, Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, in Milwaukee. (AP Photo/Aaron Gash)2026-08-19T03:03:55Z MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers matched baseball’s modern-era record for the biggest shutout, beating the Seattle Mariners 22-0 on Tuesday night behind three-run homers from Christian Yelich, David Hamilton and Luis Lara and a two-run shot by Jake Bauers. The major league-best Brewers (78-48) matched a franchise record for runs in a game. Since 1901, the only previous 22-0 victories were by Pittsburgh over the host Chicago Cubs on Sept. 16, 1975 and by Cleveland at the New York Yankees on Aug. 31, 2004.Bauers scored the Brewers’ first run in colorful fashion. He doubled with two outs in the first against Bryce Miller (4-7). William Contreras singled, and left fielder Randy Arozarena’s throw to the plate easily beat Bauers, who slapped at catcher Cal Raleigh’s mitt on his slide. Raleigh dropped the ball, and Bauers dived back to the plate. Yelich’s homer made it 6-0 in the fifth. Hamilton went deep in the sixth to make it 9-0, and Bauers’ 22nd homer later in the inning made it 11-0.Milwaukee scored nine times in the eighth against Mariners infielder Leo Rivas, including Lara’s homer, which was the first of his career.Kyle Harrison (10-3), who allowed eight runs (three earned) over 4 2/3 innings in his previous start, held the Mariners to two hits in five innings. Shane Drohan worked two innings, Grant Anderson pitched the eighth and catcher Gary Sánchez completed the five-hitter, working around two hits in the ninth while throwing several pitches under 40 mph.Hamilton’s four RBIs were a career high. Yelich and Lara also drove in four runs each, and Garrett Mitchell had four hits. Up nextSeattle’s RHP Logan Gilbert (9-7, 3.28 ERA) and Milwaukee’s RHP Dustin May (6-7, 4.13) start on Wednesday.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Eternal sunshine of the Mariners mind: Mariners lose big to Brewers, 22-0
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - AUGUST 18: Bryce Miller #50 of the Seattle Mariners is taken out of game in the fifth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on August 18, 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by John Fisher/Getty Images) | Getty Images You want to empty your home, you want to empty your life, of the 2026 Mariners, and we here at Lookout Landing Lacuna are here to help. Hopefully you enjoyed the brief interlude of the Mariners winning a series against the Astros, as we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming of soul-crushing road losses with a 22-0 debacle against the Brewers. This game was close until it wasn’t, on paper at least, but with the Mariners offense flat in the first five innings of this game, a 1-0 deficit felt about as large as the eventual 2-0 deficit…then 6-0…then 11-0…then 22-0. I might have missed some in there. Honestly I sort of stopped paying attention, in the way that sometimes at the dentist’s office you transport yourself elsewhere mentally somewhere more pleasant. To paraphrase John Green a little, this game fell apart the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.Or to paraphrase Charlie Kaufman:The Mariners could have gotten on the board first in this one, with Brendan Donovan – whose bat continues to slowly heat up as he gets more regular playing time – led off with a double off lefty Kyle Harrison. But despite Donovan moving to third on a wild pitch, the Mariners couldn’t get that run across with no outs, as the top of the lineup went down in order after that – Randy Arozarena struck out, Dom Canzone grounded out, and Julio Rodríguez struck out one pitch after a pitch he should have walked on, a slurve well below the zone that was called a strike. Meanwhile, the Brewers came out swinging hard against Bryce Miller, making the kind of early loud contact that has unfortunately been a hallmark of Miller’s outings lately. He got lucky with a couple of deep flyouts – one tracked down by an excellent route by Julio in center – but then hung a splitter to Jake Bauers for a double, with Bauers narrowly safe at second thanks to a strong catch and throw by Robles in right. Unlike the Mariners, the Brewers were then able to score that run; William Contreras turned on a sinker inside and did just enough to get it into left field. The slow-footed Bauers should have been out at home, but the ball popped out of Cal Raleigh’s glove when Bauers ran into Raleigh, earning Cal a tough error. (Hilariously, at one point it looked like we’d debate that one run all night. That was before Julio Rodríguez threw a ball into the stands with just one out, allowing a run to score, and it somehow wasn’t even the worst thing to happen that inning. We were so young here, in this part of the recap. How happy is the blameless recapper’s lot!)It wasn’t much easier for Miller in the second as he labored through the bottom half of the Brewers’ lineup; he worked around back-to-back one-out singles but the Brewers just weren’t fooled by anything; he had just four whiffs by the end of the second with no strikeouts; meanwhile, the Mariners had struck out four times by the end of the third. The Mariners allowing a starter to settle in after making some noise early? Color me sadprised.Harrison had retired nine in a row by the fifth when Victor Robles worked a two-out walk and Brock Rodden knocked a ball up the middle that the shortstop was able to smother but not make a play on. Robles and Rodden then executed a risky double steal but Rodden was tagged out at second. Like the missed catch at home, at one point this might have made a difference in the ballgame. When I was young and upset, my mom used to tell me that one day, whatever intense heartbreak I was suffering would feel like nothing at all, that I wouldn’t even remember it. What she didn’t tell me was that the reason that would happen is because that sharp pain would be dulled by a lifetime of other, worse ones.Once again, in a cruel mirroring, the Brewers got some traffic in the bottom of the inning after Miller had retired nine in a row himself, with Hamilton eking out an infield single Cole Young couldn’t quite corral, followed by a steal where he was narrowly safe. Maybe losing the handle a little, Miller went on to walk Brice Turang on four pitches and then the Brewers executed a double steal of their own, as if to rub the Mariners’ faces in their own failure in the top of the inning. Jackson Chourio then hit a little flyball single that dropped right in front of Julio for a 2-0 Brewers lead, doubling up what already felt like an impossible 1-0 deficit. Miller then fell behind Jake Bauers 3-0 before walking him, loading the bases for the dangerous Contreras. Miller was able to keep Contreras in the yard, limiting the damage to a sac fly, but that brought up Christian Yelich. Miller made a mistake with his splitter, and Yelich – although not the fearsome hitter he’s been in years past – jumped on it, demolishing the splitter on the plate 396 feet to double up the Brewers’ lead.Postgame, Dan Wilson took accountability for leaving Miller in despite the hard contact the Brewers had been making off him all game: “It’s on me. I didn’t make the right choice.”That’s where in a merciful and just world this game would have ended, with each side trading half-hearted blows and the Mariners quietly limping to a shutout loss. But this game was not merciful despite how much fans might have wished for a mercy rule, as the Brewers went on to put the kind of hurting on the Mariners that brings national attention (derogatory). If the Mariners must be bad, can’t they just be bad in peace and leave us safely below the radar of fans with access to gif toolbars? But no, they must make a big, unignorable pile of mess. In architectural terms, they somehow created an unholy trinity of the J.Edgar Hoover building (depressing), Trump Tower in Vegas (tacky), and DIA (ugly, confusing, likely haunted by a malevolent spirit). The one thing that sucked about this game is it crushed underfoot one of the tender green shoots of hope I’d been nourishing for the back half of this season, namely that Josh Simpson Is Interesting. This felt much more like a spring training Simpson appearance, when he struggled to throw strikes. Things gotbad worsefromhereto the point where I don’t want to necessarily detail them any more, and I don’t think you want to read about them. How much deeper can a hole be dug? To the point where Leo Rivas was standing on the mound in the eighth. The numbers just kept ticking up in the runs column for the Brewers until it sort of just felt numb. Just tiny little rocks. The 2026 Mariners: technically it IS brain damage.“Obviously, it’s an embarrassing loss. We got our ass kicked,” said Bryce Miller postgame. “But at the end of the day, dwelling on it isn’t going to do any good. We gotta go back to the hotel, sleep, and come back tomorrow and play again.”“Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders,“ said Fredrich Nietzsche post-Enlightenment. Meet me tomorrow in Montauk Milwaukee.

Pitching Woes Continue: Dbacks 4, Red Sox 9
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - AUGUST 18: Gabriel Moreno #14 of the Arizona Diamondbacks rounds the bases after hitting a grand slam against the Boston Red Sox during the third inning at Fenway Park on August 18, 2026 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Dbacks fell once again for the second consecutive night in Boston 9-4. To make things worse, the Phillies and the Padres won so now the Dbacks are 2 games outside of the third wild card spot. They are losers of 3 in a row and are 4-6 over their last 10 games.Despite everything happening off the field with this team and Ketel Marte, it was actually the pitching that let this team down for the second consecutive night. The Marte news is no doubt a distraction im sure for this team, however having Ketel Marte on the field isn’t going to change the fact that this pitching staff has given up 20 runs the past 2 games. You aren’t going to win very many games giving up that many runs no matter who you are running up there to bat.Merrill Kelly continued his skid as his stuff has really regressed late into the season. Kelly allowed 6 ER in just 4 innings tonight including 4 walks. What has become especially alarming about Kelly is just how few of his pitches he is throwing in the zone. This was first brought to my attention weeks ago by Snakes Territory’s own Jesse Freidman, and tonight he noted that Kelly only threw 38.4% of his pitches in the strike zone. Last year, Kelly’s in zone rate was 47.8%. And it wasn’t just tonight for Kelly as he has had a sub 40% in zone rate for several of his last starts. Whatever is going on with him isn’t going to be a simple fix im afraid. He really has some issues he needs to iron out physically, mechanically, or perhaps both. The offense was rather quiet again with the exception of a Gabi Moreno grand slam in the top of the 3rd inning. It was just like you drew it up too as with 2 outs Waldschmidt and Vargas each singled, and Carroll was hit by a pitch brining up exactly who you wanted at the plate in this situation, the teams hottest hitter Gabi Moreno. Moreno then proceeded to get ahead in the count 2-0 and then absolutely unloads on a mistake pitch 428 feet over the green monster for a grand slam. Like I said, just like you drew it up. Team baseball passing the baton to the heart of the lineup.Unfortunately Merrill Kelly would hand the 4-3 lead immediately back to the Red Sox just 4 batters later. Terrible timing for a team desperate to get some momentum. Then the Dbacks offense would proceed to do almost nothing for the rest of the game outside of a Perdomo double in the 6th and a couple of singles gathered around.Aside from the Gabi grand slam, the highlight of the game for me was seeing Justin Martinez back on the mound pumping 102mph fastballs. He did walk 2 guys in the inning and was far from perfect, but to be able to get him back out on the mound is huge for this team. What a bullpen these guys can theoretically run out there now that Martinez is back!Like I said in the beginning, im sure the Marte situation is a distraction, but you aren’t going to win many games giving up 9 or more runs. The offense has not looked good since the Marte news broke with the exception of 1 swing from Gabi Moreno sure. However the Dbacks were not going to win either of these games with how poorly the pitching has shown up in this series.Tomorrow will really be the test for this team as they send the red hot Brandon Pfaadt to the mound to try and avoid the sweep, but the offense will have to rebound against Payton Tolle and his power fastball. The Dbacks badly need to get some momentum back on their side and try and put this Ketel Marte situation behind them the best they can if they want to save their season. And hopefully tomorrow can also be some good news on the Ketel front if all goes well on his MRI.

Brewers match MLB's largest shutout win since 1888 with 22-0 blowout over the Mariners
The Brewers matched a franchise record with their 22 runs on Tuesday night, too.IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect / REUTERSThings were incredibly easy for the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. They rolled to a dominant 22-0 win over the Seattle Mariners in what ended up being a blowout that Major League Baseball hasn't seen in well over a century. That matched the largest shutout win in MLB history since the start of the 1888 campaign, according to MLB's Sarah Langs. A 22-0 win has only been seen twice since then, first by the Pirates in 1975 and by Cleveland in 2004, though both of those were done on the road. A larger home blowout dates back to 1885, when the Giants picked up a 24-0 win. The Philadelphia Quakers also grabbed a 24-0 win in 1887, but that was on the road, too.The Brewers had 22 total hits in the win on Tuesday, and had built up a 13-0 lead through seven innings. They dropped five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, thanks in part to home runs from Christian Yelich, David Hamilton and Jake Bauers. But it was the eighth inning when things really fell apart for Seattle. The Brewers put up nine runs in the frame, which turned the contest into a dominant win into the historic blowout. Luis Lara hit his first MLB home run during that stretch, too, and actually hit it off of Mariners third baseman Leo Rivas. With the game so out of hand, the Mariners turned to putting position players on the mound.First HR as a Big Leaguer for Luis Lara 🥹 https://t.co/g93RxSejVQpic.twitter.com/HDnKAqiLsh— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) August 19, 2026Later in the eighth, things somehow got worse for Seattle. Julio Rodríguez forgot how many outs there were and threw a live ball into the stands in the outfield after catching a fly ball, which ended up allowing two more runs in for Milwaukee. It was, by all accounts, an awful inning for Seattle. Rodríguez looked so defeated in the outfield. The Mariners were losing 19-0. Somehow the worst play of the game came after that with Julio Rodriguez simply not paying attention.Unreal. https://t.co/jVNfJOlGLJ#Mariners#TridentsUppic.twitter.com/Vjg6QZuUrQ— Dusty Baker (@DustyBakerTV) August 19, 2026Bryce Miller got the start for the Mariners, though he allowed five runs and seven hits before he was pulled from the mound. Kyle Harrison, on the other hand, allowed just two hits and had eight strikeouts in his five innings on the mound. The Mariners only managed five hits throughout the night, and had four errors. The Brewers' 22 runs matched a franchise record, too.The Brewers now sit at 78-48 with the win, which marked their fourth in a five-game span. That's the best record throughout all of Major League Baseball, and has them ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central race. While things almost certainly won't be as easy as they were on Tuesday night, the Brewers are clearly clicking right now in Milwaukee as they enter the final stretch of the regular season. With the postseason right around the corner, that's a great spot to be in.

White Sox Minor League Update: August 17-18, 2026
George Wolkow is seeing beach balls at the plate, blasting two more homers Tuesday night to give him five over his last five games. | George Wolkow/Instagram Charlotte Knights 9, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 8 (10 innings)The Knights (65-56) struck first in the second inning. Edgar Quero led off with a double, and Caden Connor drove him in for a quick 1-0 edge. Shane Smith, still lost, flooded the basepaths with traffic in the bottom half and let the RailRiders swipe the lead right back. Jairo Iriarte took over in the third and immediately served up a two-run homer. By the fifth, Tanner McDougal was getting shelled for four unearned runs, and Charlotte was buried, 8-1. Ouch.Apparently, though, the Knights offense wasn’t interested in going quietly. Charlotte finally came alive with three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run bomb from Junior Perez and four walks, before erupting for four more tallies in the ninth. Mario Camilletti delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double, and Andy Weber added an RBI single to complete the surge and knot things at 8-8. Jaden Woods kept the RailRiders off the board in the ninth to send it to extras, where Rikuu Nishida started at second as the ghost runner. Michael Turner moved him to third with a ground out, and Ryan Galanie brought him home with a sacrifice fly for the 9-8 lead. The bats went quiet until Campbell decided enough was enough, launching a homer in the eighth to tie it up and drag this one into extras.Neither side could get its ghost runner home in the 10th, but the Barons got the job done in the 11th. Jordan Sprinkle started the inning at second and moved to third on a Colby Shelton ground out before Ryan Burrowes lifted a sacrifice fly to bring him home for the 4-3 lead. Jackson Kelley made things interesting in the bottom half, striking out the first two batters before issuing an intentional walk and another free pass to load the bases. Grayson Fitzwater came through with the equalizer, an RBI single to tie it at 1-1.The Ballers grabbed the lead an inning later, using a single, ground out, balk and wild pitch to manufacture the go-ahead run. They gave themselves some breathing room in the seventh when Fitzwater struck again, ripping a two-run double to stretch the advantage to 4-1. The pitching staff made sure that was more than enough. The D-backs answered with six runs across the next three innings, which would give them more than enough offense to grab the victory. Josiel Veras and Diego Natera chipped in RBI doubles to make it 6-3 in the fourth, but this one never got interesting. Suddenly, it was 5-3, and the Jays looked a little less smug. The sixth brought some textbook small ball from the Sox when Orlando Patino singled, Felix Lebron walked, Samuel Luis bunted, Hector Paulino grounded one home, and Fernando Graterol’s bases-loaded walk tied it up. The Sox had a golden chance to jump ahead in the seventh — Ronald Cardozo led off with a triple, but the bats fizzled. China recovers rocket stage on land for first time, after earlier recovery at sea
In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, the Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket takes off at the Dongfeng commercial space innovation pilot zone in northwestern China Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. (Wang Jiangbo/Xinhua via AP)2026-08-19T03:33:11Z BEIJING (AP) — China has successfully recaptured the first stage of a rocket on land for the first time, state media reported Wednesday, as the country seeks to advance its space program.Although this marks China’s first successful recovery on land, it is the second time the country has recovered a rocket stage, following a successful recovery on a sea platform in July.Chinese state news agency Xinhua said the reusable rocket, Zhuque-3, was launched Wednesday morning and that the rocket’s first stage was recovered afterward. Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin have been recovering rockets since 2015, helping drive down launch costs by reusing hardware that would otherwise be discarded after carrying satellites and other payloads toward space.Xinhua said that Wednesday’s recovery also marked China’s first use of deployable landing legs and deemed the result “a major breakthrough in the country’s reusable rocket technology.” On July 10, the first stage of a Long March-10B rocket separated from the second stage after liftoff and returned to a platform at sea. That time, it was recovered using a net-capture system. The next day, on July 11, Japan conducted the first test flight of an experimental reusable rocket, which took off and safely landed.Japan is also trying to catch up with the technology needed to cut launch costs and compete in the global space market.

Bayern Munich News: The aftermath of FC Bayern’s 4-2 win over Heidenheim; Bayern to make massive splash for Erling Haaland?; and MORE!
HEIDENHEIM, GERMANY - AUGUST 18: Jamal Musiala of FC Bayern München falls over during the match and requires treatment by FCB team doctor Prof. Dr. Peter Ueblacker during the preseason friendly match between 1. FC Heidenheim and FC Bayern München at Voith-Arena on August 18, 2026 in Heidenheim, Germany. (Photo by EyesWideOpen/Getty Images) | Getty Images Die Folgen: Bayern’s 4-2 win over Heidenheim (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich ended its preseason slate of friendlies with a nice (but scary) 4-2 victory over Heidenheim. While the play was choppy, but ultimately good enough, the story — again — revolved around the health of Jamal Musiala, who collapsed on the field for the second game in a row. While there will be plenty of focus on that for days to come, it was a strong ending to the preseason.Aside of some early mistakes, Bayern Munich was the better, more dominant team. Let’s dive into the details — here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI: Here’s how we line up this afternoon 🫡 pic.twitter.com/iT8WvTl0kT— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) August 18, 2026It was revealed right before the game that Joshua Kimmich was battling an adductor issue (there were rumors that he had picked up an injury during the World Cup…could this still be lingering?), while Tom Bischof and Manuel Neuer were held out due to load management. That all led to a very mixed bag of a lineup, especially in the central midfield. Kompany would sub pretty liberally, so it seemed as if almost everyone was on some kind of minutes restriction. From what it looked like Maycon Cardozo was the No. 10, Felipe Chávez was the No. 8, and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye was the No. 6. All scuffled at times in those roles (as expected). That was the deepest we saw Ndiaye sit as a midfielder since joining the club (and he had some rough moments). It only took Heidenheim five minutes to get on the scoreboard. After some traffic and confusion in the Bayern Munich midfield, three errors led to the goal (and one of them is not the position of Upamecano, who could do nothing to prevent that goal) — Chávez made a bad pass into Arijon Ibrahimović, putting him under duress. Of course, Ibrahimović lost the ball, and Bara Sapoko Ndiaye tried to clear rather than secure the ball and it deflected off the Heidenheim player hard. Yannik Wagner took advantage of it and beat Jonas Urbig on a legitimate breakaway for a 1-0 lead.Clearly, that was not the finest moment for any of the players involved, but it seems unlikely that we would see that combination again (maybe ever). You could also argue Urbig could have done better there, but it was a clear breakaway for Wagner and he took advantage of it. In the 25th minute, Chávez would get some payback as he drew a free kick and subsequently took it. Chávez’s curling, knuckler tucked in right under the crossbar (after nicking it). All of a sudden it was 1-1. In the 45th minute, Bayern Munich conceded again with some sloppy play. This time, Alphonso Davies was a little late in attempting to close down and contend a diagonal ball in. That led to a poor clearance by Ndiaye, whose header landed right on the foot of Julian Niehues for a pretty sensational volley goal. There were some issues with positioning and communication defensively as a unit and on Niehues’ goal, it was evident. In the second half, Binder drew a penalty, which was converted by Ibrahimović to knot the game at 2-2. Binder is such a tantalizing player, but he just needs time and work to fine tune his game. The kid has some electricity to him for sure. Harry Kane, who subbed in, had a good look in the 65th minute after a really nice pass from Musiala (who had a great burst), but did not have his best placement on his shot attempt.A minute later, though, something happened with Musiala, who stopped playing and eventually went down (off camera). Play was stopped and it was unclear exactly what happened with the Germany international. Musiala was only on the field for roughly five minutes. After the game, Musiala revealed that he has a medical condition that he is dealing with.Bayern Munich would take the lead (not that it was important after the Musiala episode) after Olise found Luis Díaz for a 3-2 lead. Nathaniel Brown would add another goal as well to really put the nail in Heidenheim’s coffin for the match. At this very moment, Brown seems to be ahead of Davies in terms of performance. Aleksandar Pavlović had the assist on Brown’s goal. Even if Brown is leading the race, Davies should get the right to start the season in his normal perch, though Brown should also be granted a quick hook if it does not work out.Overall, it was a choppy game (as expected), but Bayern Munich’s depth and quality were able to shine through. If you missed our Initial Analysis, Match Awards, or Observations, check them out below: Bayern plotting big move for Haaland as post-Kane solution? (Goal)Bayern Munich expects to keep Harry Kane for at least another two season (hopefully three), but there will be an end to the relationship at some point. When that happens, Bayern Munich could pull a massive ace of its sleeve — Erling Haaland. While the Norwegian mega-star has a contract that runs through 2034, the Bavarians could be ready to splurge in a few years to get him out of that deal early:€250 million changes the calculations! Bayern Munich’s new deal may not be merely a financial move. It could hold the key to a huge future transfer. With 250 million euros injected into the club’s coffers, the most important question begins to circulate in Munich: is the Bavarian giant preparing to fund the post-Harry Kane era? And if so, could Erling Haaland be the name awaited to succeed the English striker? The matter may have come as a shock to Bayern Munich’s fans, who had dreamed of one day owning a part of their club, and perhaps had saved money to realise that dream. It seems the opportunity has passed. Through his group “Viessmann Generations Group”, businessman Max Viessmann acquired the remaining 5% of Bayern Munich’s shares for 250 million euros. That deal values the Bavarian club at around 5 billion euros, at a time when its large cash reserves have turned into an important financial asset for the future. So what could Bayern do with this huge sum? Before we get into Goal’s dream scenario, the deal referenced has been disputed by one outlet in Germany after two others had the initial report: In reality, sporting director Max Eberl can invest this financial strength in protecting the team’s stars from the ambitions of Europe’s elite, according to the German newspaper “Bild.”.The real ambition may go beyond keeping the current stars, extending to the years ahead, especially with Harry Kane approaching a new phase in his career. Now 33, the English striker will leave Bayern facing the need to think seriously about a successor within two or three years. He is one of the greatest goalscorers ever to have worn the club’s shirt. Here a name familiar to Bavarian fans appears: “Erling Haaland”. The Norwegian striker was close to moving to Bayern before he chose Manchester City, after Munich had been part of his considerations during 2022. Today the circumstances have changed. Guardiola has left Manchester City. At some point in his career, Haaland may look for a new challenge and a different experience. Will the Norwegian striker one day feel that his adventure in England has lost some of its shine? And will he then remember his wonderful years in the German league with Borussia Dortmund, and the visit that led him to Munich years ago?If that happens, Haaland may find Bayern’s doors open, and the club’s coffers able to fund a heavyweight deal. Perhaps the ideal scenario for the Bavarian giant would be for Haaland to succeed Kane in leading its attack, ushering in a new era at the Allianz Arena. The reality of the potential deal is that it will cost a lot of money to get Haaland…a ridiculous amount of money. Is it possible? Sure.Is it probable? Eh…maybe not.As great as it would be to get Haaland, it would have to be a massive deal to acquire him and then even more to pay him. It would likely go against Bayern Munich’s operating philosophy. By then, though, maybe Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß will not hold power positions and a more adventurous set of shot callers will occupy seats on the supervisory board? For this writer, Haaland would likely be worth it (especially knowing that prices are only going to rise), but fiscal responsibility has been a staple of Bayern Munich’s existence. It is a very fun thought…no doubt. John Schneider: "Shocking" allegations against Terrion Arnold would have prompted Seahawks to cut him
It's still unclear why the Lions cut cornerback Terrion Arnold after he was arrested on eight felony charges. It is clear based on the latest installment of this season's Hard Knocks that the Seahawks would have cut Arnold, too.The third episode of this year's show includes a sideline conversation between G.M. John Schneider and special-teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh at practice, regarding the free-agent with whom the Seahawks have struck an agreement but have not yet officially added to the team."If you're [the Lions], why would you release him?" Harbaugh said to Schneider."Well, it was because it was very shocking," Schneider replied. "Like, if you read The Athletic article, it's not good, you know?""And you would imagine if it was flipped, it'd probably be the same thing here?" Harbaugh said. "I think we probably would have had to let him go," Schneider admitted."Because it's just the nature of like — when you're the team, it's different than the second-chance team," Harbaugh said. "It's totally different." "Yeah. I get that," Schneider said. The rest of the episode includes some of the due diligence the Seahawks performed, with Schneider making it clear that he spoke to former Alabama coach Nick Saban about Arnold. There's also a scene in which Schneider and Arnold's agent, Nicole Lynn, tentatively agree that Arnold will accept an offer from the Seahawks. There's nothing in the episode regarding whether incoming ownership was consulted regarding the move. It would be fair for Vinod Khosla and/or his wife Neeru (who will be the controlling owner, if the deal is approved next week) to push back on the notion that it would be acceptable to the Seahawks to be Arnold's "second-chance" team if the facts reported were sufficiently "shocking" to prompt the Seahawks to cut him, if Arnold had already been on the roster. That's not to say Arnold doesn't deserve a second chance. But it seems premature to declare him ready for one. The criminal case against him is pending. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.Mike Vick, for example, got his second chance after he pleaded guilty to dogfighting charges and paid his debt to society by serving a prison term. At this point, the charges against Arnold are unresolved. The facts that Schneider found "shocking" could be entirely true — Saban's vouching for Arnold notwithstanding. The whole thing is just odd. And, as a source with another team put it last week regarding the Seahawks' willingness to move forward with Arnold, "They won, and they don’t care."New ownership might feel differently. Especially after watching the latest episode of Hard Knocks.

Texas teen convicted in fatal stabbing at track meet seeks a new trial and judge
A courtroom sketch provided by Pat Lopez shows Karmelo Anthony, center, at the defense table, the jury on the left and the presiding judge on the right, June 4, 2026, in McKinney, Texas, during the trial of a teen accused of fatally stabbing another during a track meet in suburban Dallas last year. (Pat Lopez via AP, File)2026-08-19T04:07:03Z DALLAS (AP) — A Texas teenager convicted of fatally stabbing a 17-year-old athlete at a high school track meet is arguing that a judge did not fairly preside over the high-profile case and is asking for a new trial.Karmelo Anthony, now 19, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison after a Collin County jury in June rejected his claims of self-defense during a confrontation with Austin Metcalf in the stadium bleachers last year.Hearings on Anthony’s requests for a retrial and a new judge were set to begin Wednesday in suburban Dallas.Anthony’s legal team has argued that a retrial is warranted in part because state District Judge John Roach enforced overly strict courtroom rules and gave incomplete instructions to the jury that convicted the teenager at the end of the nearly weeklong trial. Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before returning the verdict. The case attracted attention in part because of a flood of social media posts that amplified the killing in racial terms. Anthony is Black; Metcalf was white. Lawyers on both sides, however, told jurors the tragedy had nothing to do with race.Anthony did not testify during the trial. During the trial, students described a heated exchange over Anthony’s refusal on a rainy spring day to leave a tent that belonged to Metcalf’s team. The teens went to different high schools.Several schools were competing when Anthony sat under the Memorial High School tent that was perched in the bleachers. Austin Metcalf and others had repeatedly told Anthony to leave, witnesses testified, leading to an escalating confrontation.Prosecutors said Anthony provoked Metcalf, and witnesses testified that Anthony was the aggressor. Read More Anthony at one point reached inside a bag and replied: “Touch me and see what happens,” according to a police report.Metcalf pushed Anthony, according to witnesses, who said Anthony then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest.

Mesmerizing jellyfish take center stage at 1st US museum dedicated solely to the floating predators
An employee cleans a display at the Jellyfish Museum, a facility that is home to about 20 unique species of jellyfish found in Florida and other parts of the world, Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, in Pompano Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)2026-08-19T04:06:28Z POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The floating tentacled predators pulse and swirl in hypnotic patterns in the dark museum space, lit primarily by images projected on the walls and the glowing light from the saltwater tanks. The private Jellyfish Museum in Pompano Beach, Florida, just north of Fort Lauderdale, is believed to be the first museum in the United States dedicated solely to the translucent invertebrates, and one of the few such spaces in the world, according to the city and the museum’s founders. It was created by Alex and Yana Yanovsky, who previously developed successful aquariums in Ukraine, including their first jellyfish museum in Kyiv. The couple left those facilities behind when they fled Ukraine following the 2022 Russian invasion, operations manager Jessica Eisenbarth said. The museum, which opened this past spring, is the couple’s first aquatic attraction since immigrating to the U.S., but they’d like to expand. “When they left Ukraine, they moved to Florida, and then they immediately wanted to share their passion here,” Eisenbarth said.Jellyfish have survived for over 500 million years, making them older than dinosaurs and even trees. Their ancient origins are part of their allure, along with their hypnotic, pulsing movements. They have no heart or brain, and are made up primarily of water, giving them a translucent look.Yana Yanovsky came up with the idea for the jellyfish museum after noticing how popular the jellyfish were at their other aquariums. “Jellyfish are some of the most resilient creatures on Earth. While they lack a brain, they maintain a simple nerve net that allows them to respond to their environment,” Yana said in a statement provided by the city. “Their movement is mesmerizing, almost meditative, and they play an important role in marine ecosystems.” Read More Monty Graham, director of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, said he’s not surprised someone made an aquarium dedicated specifically to jellyfish. He credits the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California with kicking off the popularity of jellyfish exhibits at aquariums all over the world. Monterey Bay Aquarium began displaying jellyfish in temporary exhibits in 1985 and opened a permanent gallery in 1996.“Jellyfish are cool, they’re things that people don’t get to see up close unless they’re scuba diving,” Graham said. “So here was this opportunity, in a controlled environment, very beautiful settings. It clicked all the buttons and checked all the boxes, and it was a very good, positive thing.” The nearly 10,000-square-foot (900 square meters) Jellyfish Museum houses roughly 20 unique species of jellyfish found in Florida waters and other parts of the world. Different species can be rotated through the museum’s 21 tanks. Some current occupants include Japanese sea nettles, moon jellyfish, spotted jellies and upside-down jellyfish, the last of which can be found among Florida’s mangrove swamps. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. The jellyfish are acquired through licensed aquaculture partners, according to the city. The space is designed to exude calm and tranquility, general manager Iryna Pelypkanych said. It was converted from a former Wells Fargo bank branch with about $100,000 in community redevelopment grants from the city of Pompano Beach. Guides teach people about the role jellyfish play in marine ecosystems and the importance of protecting them. “The biggest idea here is to leave people with the feeling that they know something more about the population of jellyfish,” Pelypkanych said. “Because so far, we know around 4,000 different species that can be called jellyfish.”
