Bayern Munich’s deep lying playmaker — why Tom Bischof picked the number 8?
WIESBADEN, GERMANY - JULY 25: Tom Bischof scores his team's first goal by a penalty shot during the pre-season friendly match between SV Wehen Wiesbaden and FC Bayern München at BRITA-Arena on July 25, 2026 in Wiesbaden, Germany. (Photo by Christian Kaspar-Bartke/Getty Images) | Getty Images As part of the transition post Leon Goretzka, Bayern Munich handed he midfield role as well as the number 8 shirt over to Tom Bischof. The 21 year-old has shown incredible composure for his age and is keen to carry out the responsibilities of his role and as well as the weight of the shirt he inherited from Goretzka.A responsibility rather than a burdenThe number 8 shirt of Bayern has seen absolute stalwarts in Paul Breitner, Lothar Matthäus and the honorary president Uli Hoeneß himself. It comes with a certain legacy and weight that Bischof holds a lot of respect for. Leon Goretzka inherited the number 8 from Javi Martinez after winning the sextuple with Bayern. Javi sealed the Champions League and the treble in his very first season at the club with the 8 on his back. They added immense weight to a jersey that was already iconic. As graceful as he threads his passes, Tom Bischof answered the natural question of whether the shirt brings an immense burden with it. “When you play for Bayern, you’re generally under the spotlight anyway, regardless of what number you wear on your back. Nevertheless, squad numbers do have a significance for most people. It’s a special feeling to wear such a significant number. I just like it, it suits me. And I appreciate the fact it’s been entrusted to me. I want to take the next step now and I definitely believe I’m capable of it. So: incentive! I’m looking forward to wearing the number 8 shirt and will do so with pride,” said Bischof in the club’s magazine #Säbener51 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).A classy gesture beforehandAlthough he grew up adoring the number 10 shirt, the role of the box-to-box midfielder was the path that Bischof and the game chose. The 21-year-old was not the only young midfielder rising through the ranks in Munich. Aleksandar Pavlović who settled into a starter role in midfield is another suitable and an easy choice to succeed Goretzka’s shirt. Before throwing his hat Bischof did pitch the idea to his senior and only then did he make an official request with the club.“As a kid you dream of the #10. That’s what I always wanted when I was younger. Now I play more defensively, so #8 fits. I waited for a while out of respect for Leon, and then initially spoke to Aleks Pavlović. He’s been here longer and is a friend of mine, but Pavlo is sticking with his number. So, I asked and they indicated that I could have it,” he added acknowledging his ability and role’s requirement to defend deeper.Join the conversation!Sign up for a user account and get:New, improved notifications system!Fewer adsCreate community postsComment on articles, community postsRec comments, community posts

Raleigh went from finishing second to Aaron Judge in AL MVP last season to getting compared to a hitter from the 19th century on worst levels.Last week, the Mariners catcher took ownership of the team's worsening offense following the loss against the New York Yankees."We're not playing well. That starts with me," Raleigh said via the Seattle Times' Ryan Divish. "I'm awful. I've got to find a way to be better and to help bring the guys along. We just gotta play better. We're just playing very, very, very bad baseball in every facet of the game."Raleigh's hitting falloff has not helped the Mariners. They are 59-67 pending Wednesday's result and look outside the playoff race at the moment.

Royals stage another comeback to take the series from the Athletics
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - AUGUST 19: Vinnie Pasquantino of the Kansas City Royals hits a home run against the Athletics during the sixth inning at Kauffman Stadium on August 19, 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Reed Hoffmann/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Athletics have the only bullpen worse than the Royals by ERA in 2026. For the second night in a row, they let Kansas City take away a Sacramento lead. The Royals took the game 9-7 and set up a possible four game sweep for tomorrow afternoon. The day started poorly for Seth Lugo who gave up three consecutive hits to the first three batters of the game. All three were hard hit ground balls that found holes. Henry Bolte, Jeff McNeil, and Zack Gelof hit the ball 110, 105.8, and 102.9 mph respectively while giving the Athletics a quick 2-0 lead. McNeil’s was a double as Jac Caglianone was playing near the right field line and Kyle Isbel was shaded into left field while Jeff hit the grounder to right center which was wide open. Lugo then settled in and got through the fourth with seeming ease. The Royals had multiple opportunities to get to Jeffrey Springs, but failed to cash in a couple of them. Springs walked two batters in the second and then walked one and hit Jac Caglianone in the ribs in the third. Four free base runners in two innings with none coming around to score. Finally, in the 4th, Vinnie Pasquantino’s leadoff single set the table for their first score after Springs had a very awkward attempted pitch that he was not able to throw and balked Vinnie over to second base. Salvador Perez promptly jumped on a pitch and drove it to the left center gap to score him and make the score 2-1. That ribbie makes Salvy officially second all-time in RBIs at Kauffman Stadium behind only George Brett. Jac Caglianone was pinch hit for with John Rave in the 5th due to ankle soreness. He evidently tweaked something hustling for a single in the first and they decided to pull him after hanging in there through four. It sounds like it was precautionary and not serious. That’s a good call with at this point in the season. Lugo ran into his second round of trouble in the 5th inning. With one out and no one on Donovan Walton singled up the middle and the other Max Muncy did as well. Bolte followed that with a third consecutive single through the left side that scored Walton on a poor throw from Tyler Tolbert allowing the other two to move up to second and third. McNeil hit the fourth single in a row on an odd golf swing to score one more. A third RBI came when Gelof grounded out, but McNeil held up long enough to get him to first instead of a double play allowing Bolte to sprint home. A’s 5 and Royals 1. Kansas City got some offense going in the 6th to try and close the gap. Vinnie pulled a solo home run to right with one out for his 500th career hit.View Link Then with two down, Carter Jensen singled and ended Jefferey’s night. Sacramento brought in Scott Blewett who gave up another single to Tolbert and another opportunity for the good guys with runners in scoring position. Kyle Isbel could not keep the rally going though, so the inning ended 5-2. Seth did not come back out for the 7th, so he ended the night at 6IP, 9H, 0BB, 3K, and all 5 runs were earned. Alex Lange was the first Royal out of the pen and took care of the 7th with a tidy one two three. Elvis Alvarado did the same for the Athletics in the bottom half. Craig Kimbrel followed suit. The bullpens were just mowing everyone down after the single Blewett gave up. There was finally some more offense in the 8th beginning when Maikel Garcia started the inning with a single off Hayden Juenger, but it turned into three bases on an error from Lawrence Butler. Pasquantino drove a ball at 109 MPH off the pad at the top of the wall to just miss a second home run on the night and bring in Garcia to cut the lead to two. It was the fourth time Pasquatch had reached base on the night. Salvy walked to follow that and Juenger left without recording any outs on the night. Drew Rom came out of the visitor’s pen next and got Jensen to line out to center. It was deep enough to move Vinnie to third, but that did not end up mattering as the next batter, Tolbert, walked to load the bases. Kyle Isbel jumped on the first pitch and hit a ground ball through the left side moving all the runners up one base and making it 5-4. Isaac Collins had come in to pinch hit for Nick Loftin back in the 7th and now had a chance to tie the game up, which he did by driving a ball to the warning track in center allowing all three runners to tag up. Now last night’s hero, Bobby Witt, had second and third with two outs so the A’s intentionally walked him to reload them for Rave. Rave cleared the bases with a double to the right field corner and gave the Royals their first lead of the night 8-5. View LinkMaikel Garcia kept it going with his second hit of the inning by singling to right and plating Rave. The 8th ended with Pasquantino’s first out of the night. He was the 11th Royal hitter of the inning, and they managed 7 runs in the frame. The Royals bullpen is also adept at giving up leads, but Steven Cruz has been very good since he blew up a bit on June 21st, so he came on to try and lock the game down in the 9th. It was no longer a save situation with the Royals having a 9-5 lead. He gave up more than one run for the first time since that June game though and made the 9th a little more interesting than KC wanted. After getting Carlos Cortes and Jonah Heim to begin the inning, Walton singled to right with two down. Max Muncy then got ahold of one to center for a 2-run home run to cut the lead 9-7. It went back to the top of the lineup and Henry Bolte who grounded it to third. He is the fastest player in baseball on the basepaths this year making it less routine than maybe it should have been, but he was thrown out and the Royals sealed the win.

Cavs acquiring Peyton Watson and trading Max Strus to Clippers in 4-team deal, AP source says
CLEVELAND (AP) — Peyton Watson is heading from Denver to Cleveland as part of a four-team trade that will also have the Cavaliers sending Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers.A person familiar with the trade said Wednesday night that Watson, a restricted free agent who spent his first four NBA seasons with the Nuggets, will sign a four-year contract with the Cavaliers worth $88 million that includes a player option and trade kicker. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced.Cleveland will send to Denver an unprotected 2031 first-round pick and a 2032 second-round selection from the Sacramento Kings that it got after making a trade in June’s NBA draft. The Nuggets will also acquire Julian Reese from Washington. The Cavaliers are getting a 2027 second-round pick from the Clippers, but that will be sent to the Wizards. The 23-year-old Watson started a career-high 40 games last season and averaged career bests in points (14.6), rebounds (4.9) and assists (2.1). He gives the Cavaliers the wing player they were looking for after LeBron James signed with Philadelphia instead of returning to Cleveland for a third stint.Besides Watson, the Cavaliers were also looking at free agents DeMar DeRozan and Jonathan Kuminga.Strus and Dean Wade were the primary starters at small forward last season. Wade signed with Philadelphia during free agency.Strus missed the first 67 games last season due to a broken left foot, but had some big baskets and steals during the playoffs as Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018. The Cavaliers were swept in that series by the New York Knicks.Cleveland laid the groundwork for a move last week when it traded Dennis Schroder to Charlotte for Tre Mann to gain salary cap space. Mann's time in Cleveland won't last long; he's headed to Washington for Cam Whitmore.___See AP’s full NBA coverage here

Sophie Cunningham names WNBA legend as dream business partner
Sophie Cunningham already knows which WNBA star she would choose as a business partner: Diana Taurasi. She recently mentioned her as someone she wants to start a venture among all league players about. The Indiana Fever guard envisioned a yacht on a body of water. She also pictured drinks flowing and plenty of sunshine. Cunningham even agreed that the concept is similar to the popular reality series “Below Deck.” MORE: Sophie Cunningham debate continues as WNBA addresses fan shirt controversy“I’d probably go Diana Taurasi because she has the finances,” Cunningham said. “And then the business would be like being on a yacht, on a boat, on a lake or on the ocean. You know, drinks flowing, you’re getting a nice tan. But definitely on her budget, not mine.”However, the business idea sounds like a permanent vacation more than a venture. There was one important detail, Cunningham wants to live that lifestyle on Taurasi’s budget. The joke makes sense given their history.Cunningham spent her first six WNBA seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, playing alongside Taurasi. The franchise drafted her 13th overall in 2019. Cunningham has also spoken openly about her influence on her career. She called her the GOAT and praised the retired guard’s competitiveness, personality and professionalism.Sophie Cunningham’s 2026 seasonJul 31, 2026; Portland, Oregon, USA; Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham (8) speaks at a press conference before a game against the Portland Fire at Moda Center. Bad news confirmed for Commanders; Defensive tackle suffers significant injury
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Washington Commanders on the injury front. When the Commanders signed four new players on Tuesday, many wondered how Washington would make room for them. Head coach Dan Quinn then revealed several new injuries on the same day that center Nick Allegretti and tight end John Bates returned to practice. While most of the injuries didn’t appear to be long-term concerns, one did. Defensive tackle Johnny Newton missed practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. Quinn gave an update on Newton. “Johnny Newton injured his pec during the game,” Quinn said. "He’s currently in New York seeing a specialist there, so I’ll give you an update tomorrow after their meeting.”When asked if he was concerned it was a long-term issue, Quinn didn't know yet.“It could be. I’ll have an update later today. Anytime you go see a specialist with a pec, it could be [long-term].”Later on Wednesday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz confirmed the worst. Newton did indeed tear his pec and underwent surgery and is expected to “miss significant time.”Sources: #Commanders DT Johnny Newton underwent surgery for a torn pectoral muscle and is expected to miss significant time. The former Illinois standout has 82 tackles, 7 sacks (5 last year), 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 33 career games. pic.twitter.com/OVq4mvoxYT— Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) August 20, 2026Newton, the No. 36 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was a part of Washington’s defensive line rotation behind Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw and Tim Settle. 2025 undrafted free agent Ricky Barber Jr. will battle veterans Shy Tuttle and Byron Cowart for what’s likely the final roster spot at defensive tackle. Japan reports record exports and imports for July as energy costs climb
Vehicles are parked for export at a Yokohama port, near Tokyo on Aug. 1, 2025. (Takuto Kaneko/Kyodo News via AP, File)2026-08-20T03:00:54Z TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s imports and exports set records in July and soaring energy costs and a weak yen helped extend a trade deficit for a third month, government data showed. Japan’s trade deficit totaled 634.5 billion yen ($4 billion) last month, marking the third straight month of red ink, the Finance Ministry said in a preliminary report Thursday.Imports surged 27.8% from the same month a year ago to a seasonally adjusted 12.15 trillion yen ($77 billion). The war in Iran has sent crude oil prices soaring. Japan, which imports almost all its oil, previously relieved heavily on oil imports from the Middle East through the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively closed.Exports rose 23.2% to 11.51 trillion yen ($73 billion), as auto exports to the U.S. and other nations remained strong. Shipments of semiconductors and other electronic devices were also healthy. Japan’s exports have now grown every month for almost a year. By value, both imports and exports rose to the highest levels in July, since comparable data became available in January 1979, according to the ministry.Japan has been seeking alternative sources for energy imports, including the U.S.Japan’s central bank has intervened to prop up the currency, but that has had little lasting impact. The yen’s weakness is related to larger causes like Japan’s socioeconomic clout, which has been weakening, analysts say. The U.S. dollar is trading at about 158 yen lately, lower than the levels in July, when it cost more than 160 yen, but still higher than what it was a year ago at 140 yen. Read More A weak yen can work as a boon for Japan’s giant exporters, like Toyota Motor Corp., because it boosts the value of overseas earnings.Toyota and other exporters have reported hefty earnings recently, raking in the benefits of the weak yen.But the weak yen makes raw materials and other essentials such as food and oil more expensive when purchased abroad.Analysts increasingly have said Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s policies have had minimal effect so far in turning around Japan’s economy. Still, she is likely to stay in power, at least for the next several months, as no election is scheduled and her popularity with voters remains relatively high.___Yuri Kageyama is on Threads: https://www.threads.com/@yurikageyama YURI KAGEYAMA Kageyama covers Japan news for The Associated Press. Denver Nuggets guard Peyton Watson (8) drives to the basket during the first half of an NBA basketball game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets, on Jan. 14, 2026, in Dallas. (AP Photo/Julio Cortez, File)2026-08-20T03:02:00Z CLEVELAND (AP) — Peyton Watson is heading from Denver to Cleveland as part of a four-team trade that will also have the Cavaliers sending Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers.A person familiar with the trade said Wednesday night that Watson, a restricted free agent who spent his first four NBA seasons with the Nuggets, will sign a four-year contract with the Cavaliers worth $88 million that includes a player option and trade kicker. He gives the Cavaliers the wing player they were looking for after LeBron James signed with Philadelphia instead of returning to Cleveland for a third stint.Besides Watson, the Cavaliers were also looking at free agents DeMar DeRozan and Jonathan Kuminga. Strus and Dean Wade were the primary starters at small forward last season. Wade signed with Philadelphia during free agency.Strus missed the first 67 games last season due to a broken left foot, but had some big baskets and steals during the playoffs as Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018. The Cavaliers were swept in that series by the New York Knicks. Read More Cleveland laid the groundwork for a move last week when it traded Dennis Schroder to Charlotte for Tre Mann to gain salary cap space. Mann’s time in Cleveland won’t last long; he’s headed to Washington for Cam Whitmore.___See AP’s full NBA coverage here JOE REEDY Reedy is a sports writer based in Cleveland covering Ohio for The Associated Press. Rams Want More From Puka Nacua Before Giving Massive Extension
The Los Angeles Rams’ biggest non-Aaron Donald question is the status of star wide receiver Puka Nacua, who faces a possible suspension and a payday at the same time. Nacua is arguably the NFL’s best receiver and one of the biggest headaches for the Rams. He has a trial coming for his offseason biting incident, which could still result in an NFL suspension. Additionally, Nacua engaged in other off-field activity that sparked controversy, including a livestream with Adin Ross. The issue is that Nacua, when on the field and healthy, is a monster who catches more passes than someone of his height is expected to, while serving as the best point-of-attack receiver in the league. Jul 29, 2026; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua (12) speaks to media after training camp at Loyola Marymount University. Mandatory Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn ImagesGiven his elite level of play, it’s harder for the Rams to dig their heels in and hold out on paying him, since other teams will throw a lot of money at a player like Nacua. With the off-field and on-field circumstances, Rams insider Nate Aktins of The Athletic thinks a new contract between the Rams and Nacua looks unlikely before the season. “I think it’s a matter of time until Nacua lands a monstrous extension. I’m not quite at the point of predicting that will come from the Rams, but I know that’s definitely everyone’s hope,” Atkins wrote“But for such a massive investment, it’s worth it to them to become that much more certain that it’s the right move for their future and their culture. That’s still the hope for everyone, but it’s going to take an ongoing pattern that includes handling the pressures of games in-season in such a pressure-packed year.”Jul 31, 2026; Westchester California USA; Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua (12) at training camp at Loyola Marymount University. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn ImagesWhy the Rams are waiting to pay Puka NacuaNacua checked into rehab over the offseason, seeking help after a very public spiral, and since then he has worked with the team therapist and, by all accounts, is taking steps to improve his life. The Rams want to see it hold up over a full season, even if this is the last year of his deal. At worst, the Rams can franchise tag Nacua for a year and see how 2027 goes. Even if it costs the team more, LA wants to make sure whatever bet they make on Nacua is a good one. Yair Rodriguez out of Noche UFC; new main event booked
One of the biggest marquee bouts on the UFC schedule is no longer.Yair Rodriguez is out of Noche UFC vs. Jean Silva. In steps first-time UFC headliner and Arizona native Jose Delgado. The five-round featherweight clash will serve as the new headliner for the Sept. 12 event at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale. MMA Junkie learned of the new matchup from a source familiar with the booking, and Silva and Delgado confirmed it on social media. It's unclear why Rodriguez (20-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) withdrew from the bout. The contest would've marked his first competition since April 2025 and only his second fight since February 2024. It's been three years since Rodriguez has competed twice in the same calendar year, but he's remained atop the division, consistently contending against the featherweight division's other top talent.Delgado (12-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) trains out of the MMA Lab in Glendale and is coming off back-to-back wins over Andre Fili and Austin Bashi. He told MMA Junkie after the Bashi fight that he'd love to fight his home area, but wasn't sure if he'd need a little more rest time. One way or another, Delgado now steps into a massive opportunity against one of the division's top dogs. Silva (17-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC) was slated to headline back-to-back Noche UFC events, having served as one-half of the main event vs. Diego Lopes in 2025. Though he lost that bout by second-round TKO, Silva bounced back in January when he defeated Arnold Allen by unanimous decision. The updated Noche UFC lineup includes:Jean Silva vs. Jose DelgadoAlexa Grasso vs. Manon FiorotJoseph Morales vs. Brandon MorenoCurtis Blaydes vs. Waldo Cortes-AcostaEdgar Chairez vs. Tim ElliottDan Ige vs. David MartinezJJ Aldrich vs. Regina TarinIgnacio Bahamondes vs. Muslim SalikhovTommy Gantt vs. Drakkar KloseTommy McMillen vs. Marwan RahikiRafa Garcia vs. Zhu RongRamiro Jimenez vs. Rodrigo VeraYousri Belgaroui vs. Djorden SantosThis article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Yair Rodriguez out of Noche UFC; new main event booked

N.J. All Stars claim Little League World Series opener with walk-off homer for historic win
While opposing managers had started intentionally walking Bayonne star Mason Rincon because of his proven ability to wallop balls well beyond Little League outfield fences, New England’s staff decided to challenge Mason all night Monday in their Little League World Series opener.Rincon, 12, struck out in the first inning, then fouled out in the third. But in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the game knotted, 1-1, Rincon rerouted a pitch over the centerfield fence and onto the hill at Howard J. Lamade Stadium in Williamsport, Pa. to give Bayonne a 2-1 victory. He knew it was gone from the moment the ball hit his 32-ounce bat. To celebrate, he looked at his teammates in the dugout instead of watching the ball land, raised his arms out wide and implored the crowd populated with more than 200 Bayonne supporters to stand up. They erupted in applause.“My first-ever walk-off home run,” Rincon said afterward. “And for it to be on this stage, to feel the atmosphere of the stadium and feel everybody chanting my name as soon as I hit the ball, felt amazing to be honest.” The Hudson County kids will next play the Mid-Atlantic All Stars from West Chester, Pa. on Friday at 7 p.m. New England, which features players from Bridgewater, Mass., will now be relegated to the U.S. elimination bracket in the 20-team tournament that will run until August 30.Rincon, who moved from Brooklyn to Bayonne three years ago and lives one floor above his catcher, Jett Bridges, was the difference just as he has been all summer. He started the night on the mound, throwing so hard that his hat fell off multiple times. In all, he racked up eight strike outs, fielded his position on multiple occasions, surrendered one home run and started a double play when he shifted to shortstop in the fifth inning.Bayonne, which did not make an error in three games at the Metro Regional last week, proved to be the team with the better fundamentals as its New England counterparts threw three wild pitches, failed to field hard hits, committed two errors and hit a batter.Bayonne found a way forward in the bracket by scoring a run in the bottom of the first carrying out a disciplined approach at the plate that drove up the pitch count of New England’s ace, Domenik Mombeleur, throughout the game. Known as “The Dominator,” Mombeleur struck out eight Bayonne batters, and allowed four hits before being forced out of the game when he reached his 86th pitch with one out in the fourth inning.Rincon’s lone pitching blemish was a home run he allowed to New England’s leadoff hitter in the top of the third inning that tied the game. After he reached his pitch limit, Rincon moved to shortstop with the score still tied, 1-1, in the fifth inning, and immediately fielded a hot shot with a runner on first. From his knees, Rincon flipped the ball to second baseman Owen Feliz, who stepped on the bag before pivoting and throwing to first for the inning-ending double play.“I know everybody sees the home runs and everybody sees the runs we put up, but for me it’s our defense that has been the one,” Rincon’s father, Jaime, said. “We didn’t make an error in regionals. We haven’t given other teams 4, 5, 6 outs.”Then, in the top of the sixth inning, Massachusetts had a runner at second base when Bayonne first baseman Leandro Anaya snagged a line drive to get the second out of the inning. Relief pitcher Gabe Garcia Jr. struck out the next batter, who failed to check his swing on a curveball. But while Bayonne’s defense and pitching were top notch, there was a multi-inning stretch when Bayonne, known for its explosive offense, struggled to score. In the second inning, runners were stranded on second and third. Then, in the bottom of the third, Bayonne had runners at first and second when a single was stroked into the outfield. Jaime Rincon, the third base coach, held the lead runner, and Bayonne left the bases loaded to end the inning.MORE BY KEVIN ARMSTRONGThis 12-year-old phenom and his tireless dad are making N.J. New England’s Tristyn Lee diving catch ended the threat. But for all the wild swings, Rincon’s steadiness stood out. Whether it was on the mound, shortstop or at the plate, the multi-talented star who dabbles in dance and theatre when not playing baseball, took most everything in stride. When Bayonne, which had never been in the Little League World Series before, needed one more run to keep its unbeaten summer alive, it was Rincon who provided it, propelling his team forward to a Friday night encore beneath the lights in Williamsport.Read the original article on NJ.com. Angels’ bats sputter in loss to Astros
Aug 19, 2026; Houston, Texas, USA; Los Angeles Angels manager Kurt Suzuki (8) takes the ball from pitcher Tayler Saucedo (55) during a pitching change in the eighth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. The pitching pitched well enough to keep the Angels in the game, but the lineup couldn’t keep up. Two runs on five hits were all the Angels could muster on Wednesday in their 3-2 loss against the Astros in Houston. All the action happened in the middle innings. Christian Vázquez got the scoring started with a solo home run into the Crawford Boxes in the third inning. The Angels responded the following inning unconventionally by scoring a pair of runs on a fan interference call. With Denzer Guzman at the plate, Vaughn Grissom at second base and Josh Lowe at first base went for the double steal with a full count. Guzman drove it to left field, where a fan in the Crawford Boxes reached over the wall and made the catch. Since the runners were on the move, Lowe was about to reach third base when the fan caught the ball, so the umpires ruled both runs scored. The lead didn’t last long, though, as the Astros scored a pair of runs of their own the following inning. Yordan Alvarez singled, Isaac Paredes walked and Jose Altuve doubled in a run to start the fourth inning. Cam Smith then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Paredes. That was all that was needed, as the Angels’ lineup only had two baserunners reach scoring position outside of the fourth inning. The Angels struck out 11 times in this one, making it the 60th time this season they have struck out 10 or more times this season. Only the Pirates, with 61 games, have more.Right-hander Walbert Ureña wasn’t the dominant force he’s been all season, but he pitched well enough to give the Angels a chance to win. He tossed five innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.Although he got whiffs on 32% of his changeups thrown, Ureña’s changeup got hit around more than usual. The Astros had four hard-hit balls out of five balls put in play against Ureña’s changeup.

Cavs Trade Grade: Cleveland finally has their answer at small forward
DENVER , CO - FEBRUARY 1: Peyton Watson (8) of the Denver Nuggets celebrates making a three pointer against the Oklahoma City Thunder during the first quarter at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, February 1, 2026. (Photo by AAron Ontiveroz/The Denver Post) | Denver Post via Getty Images It’s been a frustrating off-season for the Cleveland Cavaliers — or perhaps it was. They lost starting small forward Dean Wade in free agency to the Philadelphia 76ers, and then waited nearly a month for LeBron James to follow him there. While the rest of the Eastern Conference was improving, the Cavs were mostly sitting idle. That changed this past week as Cleveland sent Dennis Schroder to the Charlotte Hornets to free up cap space, and then traded Max Strus, an unprotected 2031 first-round pick, and a second-rounder for Peyton Watson and Cam Whitmore. After a month and a half of waiting, the Cavs have finally made their big move — one that could vault them back into the title conversation.First, we’ll start with what the Cavs gave up.The 2031 first-rounder is valuable both as a trade chip and as a useable asset. The lottery reform starting next season doesn’t reward tanking as it has for the past several decades. Instead, nearly missing the playoffs (not as a play-in team) gives you a better chance of landing the first overall pick than having the worst record in the league. Additionally, all lottery picks will be drawn instead of just the top four. We don’t know where the Cavs will be in 2031, but there’s a chance that pick could be a valuable top-five pick, even if the bottom doesn’t completely fall out for the franchise.More than that, there’s an opportunity cost with trading away this pick. The 2031 pick was the first one they could trade away, considering the 2027 and 2029 picks are still owed to the Utah Jazz from the Donovan Mitchell trade. Now, the only first the Cavs can move for the next two seasons is their 2033 selection. And considering how far into the future that is, and how their team is aging, it’d be unwise to do so. That 2031 first was essentially the last first-rounder Cleveland could trade away to help boost this core.Support us and Let ‘Em Know with Homage!Anything bought from the links helps support Fear the Sword. You can also shop all of Homage’s Cavs gear HERE. The link to the new City Edition shirt can be found HERE.There’s an on-court cost to this as well.Losing Strus will hurt. His shooting and ability to play with and without the ball opened up the offense. There’s more to spacing than just raw shooting ability. Strus knows when to cut, when to come off screens, and when to act as a decoy. That intuition — even more than the shot — is what made him so valuable to Cleveland’s offense alongside his ability to run second-side actions as a ball handler. Those are things that the Cavs will desperately miss, but the issue with Strus was his size and contract. At 6’5”, he didn’t have the necessary height and strength to cover larger opposing wings. That wouldn’t necessarily be an issue on most teams, but it was in Cleveland. The Cavs have long had too many shooting guards and not enough small forwards or point guards. Strus is one. His expiring $16.6 million deal is $7.5 million more than Sam Merrill’s, who largely fills the same role on offense. For those reasons, moving Strus makes sense. Whether Watson was the player to move him for remains to be seen. Both iterations of Cleveland’s core four have desperately needed a wing to connect the dynamic backcourt and two-center frontcourt. De’Andre Hunter was thought to be the answer in 2025, but came up short, resulting in him being dealt before the last trade deadline. Watson fits that same archetype, but there’s reasons to be hopeful that he’ll succeed where Hunter didn’t.Watson has shown to be an incredibly efficient outside shooter. He connected on 41% of his three-point looks last season, putting him in the 84th percentile for wings. This included knocking down 52% of his outside looks from the corner (97th percentile). That skill set should be useful on a Cavaliers team that we assume will rely heavily on high pick-and-rolls. Having someone who is that efficient from the corner should keep opposing defenses honest, opening up room to attack the basket. As impressive as the shooting efficiency is, Watson isn’t the high-volume three-point shooter someone like Strus is. Watson took just 3.6 outside shots per game last season, landing him in the 9th percentile for three-point volume from a wing. For context, that was less than half a shot more than Evan Mobley attempted last season (3.2), which isn’t ideal. There are legitimate questions about what kind of offensive player Watson is outside of his three-point shot.Watson mostly relied on his teammates — mainly Nikola Jokic — to create clean looks for him as a scorer. Nearly three-fourths of his field-goal makes were assisted. That suggests that he is comfortable fitting into an offense, but also isn’t a shot creator.Creating for others isn’t exactly his specialty either. Watson was in the 11th percentile in assist-to-usage rate (0.48), 35th percentile in assist percentage (9.4%), and in the 30th percentile for turnover rate (30th percentile) last season. While there are signs that point to Watson growing into a more well-rounded scorer than I laid out — mainly his impressive free-throw rate — there isn’t much to suggest that he has untapped potential here. Not being a proven offensive initiator is a concern. Shooting and playmaking are shortcomings for any lineup that includes two traditional centers. Watson fills one of those holes, but the playmaking responsibility will still be squarely on the guards. The ideal starting small forward for this group would be one that could provide a bit of both.Defensively is where Watson fits best. He offers the size, strength, and athleticism that should pair well with Jarrett Allen and Mobley. Watson is 6’8” and plays defense like he is. He’s a good rebounder for his position, can switch one through four, and has been in the 98th to 100th percentile for block percentage throughout his career. Those defensive skills have effectively allowed him to split his time between the three and four last year. This should allow him to be the ideal Wade replacement as he’s perfectly suited to slot into the starting lineup at small forward, and shift up to power forward when either Allen or Mobley are out of the game. This is what differentiates him most from Hunter, who struggled defensively and wasn’t an ideal option at power forward. The Cavs were never going to find the perfect starting forward for this group without giving up a member of the court four. As such, any move that they made would need to be a gamble of some kind. You can quibble about Watson’s fit with this group. There’s certainly reasons to be skeptical, and he most certainly isn’t an A+ match. But considering the cap space and draft capital the Cavs had available, you’d be hard-pressed to do better.Watson is the perfect type of player to roll the dice on. He has the size, athleticism, and shooting that this group desperately needs. And he also has upside to grow into a more complete offensive player. Whether or not he does will determine if Watson is a long-term solution at small forward.Koby Altman came into this summer with his hands tied behind his back considering the cap situation. Not only has he gotten the Cavs under the first apron, but he’s also addressed one of the team’s biggest weaknesses. We’ll see if it’s enough to make the Cavs true title contenders. At the very least, they’re in a far better position now than they were at the start of the offseason.Grade: A-

Kaylor Steger tops Mike Van Sickle in playoff to win Wisconsin State Open
FRANKLIN – As Kaylor Steger wiped tears from his eyes after winning the 106th Wisconsin State Open on Aug. 19 on the 18th green at Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin, Mike Van Sickle could only laugh to keep from crying while sitting on the patio.Steger bested Van Sickle on the first hole of a sudden death playoff following a Van Sickle 3-putt on the par 4 18th hole, but that came after the pair dueled down the stretch of the final round, trading impossible shots and clutch putts before Steger claimed his first State Open trophy.Steger turned pro shortly after winning the WIAA Division I state title for Oak Creek High School in 2014 and has contended in State Opens before but had never been able to break through. He is rostered in the Grass League [described as a “high-stakes par 3 golf league”], made 11 starts on PGA Tour Latinoamérica in 2023, and has been a mainstay on the mini-tours.“Just grinding for so many years and had so many chances at this tournament and to finally get it done, I’m just so thankful just for the opportunity to be able to do it,” Steger said. “A couple years ago I basically got DQ’d from one of the State Opens at SentryWorld [in 2023] because I ran out of golf balls. And I missed qualifying, I think I lost in two playoffs the next year to get into the State Open. "Just to get back and now to be able to not have to ever worry about it, that’s a little burden lifted off for sure.”This year, Steger took an assistant pro position at the River Bend Club in Virginia and has not played as much this summer as in the past.Despite that, Steger went back to some fundamentals taught by the late swing coach Dave Rasmussen and found a groove. The victory (and $15,000 winner’s check and lifetime exemption to the tournament) gives him confidence as the 30-year-old once again tries to fulfill a dream PGA Tour Qualifying School in the fall.“Just, I don’t know,” he said, “There’s something…I just can’t quite seem to give the dream up. You never know.”The cheery Van Sickle wasn’t flabbergasted over his final missed putts, it was the fact Steger shot an 8-under-par 64 over the final 18 holes of the 36-hole final day while Van Sickle fired a 7-under 65. This after Van Sickle began the round with a 1-shot lead.“I would have taken it,” he said. “On this course? Yeah. That wins. That wins 100 times out of a 100,” he exclaimed. “Somehow we got into the thousands. How many times out of a thousand? So hats off to him.”Beyond that, Van Sickle birdied four straight holes on his front nine to take a three-shot advantage, only to see Steger hole out a 3-iron from 242 yards on the 535-yard par 5 12th hole to even the duo at 12-under par.Van Sickle poured in an eagle putt on top of the Steger’s first career albatross to take a two-shot lead moments later, and it was then that the tournament effectively became match play. When asked how he would recount that hole in the future, Van Sickle quickly quipped, “It will not be told to anyone, ever.“I need to forget that that ever happened or I’ll never sleep another night in my life. If you told someone that happened in the final round of an event you were leading, it sounds ridiculous. Oh yeah, he holes out for double eagle an then I made an eagle and it’s like, OK grandpa, I’m sure that happened.’”Steger: “Everyone went crazy and I’m like, ‘Did that go in?’ And then he made eagle on top of me and I’m like, you gotta be kidding me! Respectfully. But that kind of got me going then.”Barrett Kelpin, who played with the pair in the final round: “That was wild. That was when I really knew. Like, ah, they’re getting pretty far out in front now. Then I made par on that hole. They were grooving pretty good at that point.”Van Sickle: “I’ve played enough golf to know it’s not enough, it’s never enough, you gotta go get one more.”Following the fireworks on the 12th hole, Steger ripped off four more birdies over his next five holes against Van Sickle’s one birdie. That gave him a 1-shot lead heading into the uphill 490-yard par 4 18th.Steger had to make par to win the tournament in regulation after Van Sickle missed his birdie putt, but Steger’s chip from the back fringe did not roll out and he bogeyed with two putts against Van Sickle’s par to send the tournament to a playoff hole.“Been in a lot of playoffs in my life and my record is pretty good,” Steger said. “Just honestly in my head, I was telling myself ‘I don’t lose in playoffs.’ And went and hit two good golf shots in there.”He then two-putted from about 30 feet to claim the title.Steger shot a solid 4-under 68 in the first round on Aug. 17, shot a 1-over 73 on Aug. 18 and 3-under 69 for the third round set him up for the final-round showdown.Van Sickle won quite a bit when he played full time in Wisconsin as a student-athlete at Marquette University – a program-record 11 times to be exact – and he’s been one of the more dominant players in the Pennsylvania PGA section the last five years. Heading into the tournament, he had claimed eight section wins. The 39-year-old’s second-place finish in his second start in the State Open bested his tie for third in 2025. He claimed a $10,000 prize for the finish.Whistling Straits professional David Bach finished in third at 10-under for the tournament after shooting a 5-under 67 in the final round.Kelpin shot a 3-under 69 to finish alone in fourth place at 9-under for the tournament.Trying to crash the party of professionals jammed at the top of the leaderboard were University of Wisconsin redshirt junior Charlie Erlandson and Marquette senior Mason Schmidtke.Schmidtke was at or near the top of the field since his opening round 5-under 67 on Aug. 17, and he stayed in the mix with an even par second round and a steady 1-under third round. That put him in one of the final groups for the finishing 18 but he faded out of contention over his final nine holes to finish 2-over on his fourth round and tie for 12th at 4-under for the tournament.Erlandson, however, shot a sparkling 6-under 66 in his final round to shoot up 13 spots and finish as the low amateur in a tie for fifth place at 8-under for the tournament. Erlandson, who won the Ray Fischer Amateur on June 28 when he played the final 36 holes at 18-under par, made seven birdies in his final round against one bogey.“It’s good, it’s a result of a lot of practice,” Erlandson said. “I mean, it’s a good steppingstone for sure. Low ‘am’ [is] awesome. I want to finish as high up as I can. A bad first round [74] kind of set me back. I played pretty well.”Erlandson tied with professional Patrick Adler, a Marquette alumnus, who shot a 3-under 69 over his final 18 holes. Brookfield’s Harrison Ott was once again denied in his bid to win his third State Open, and his first as a professional, as he closed with rounds of 72 and 70 to finish alone in seventh place at 7-under.Rounding out the top 10 were professionals Blake Wisdom (Lake Geneva) and George Kneiser (Dousman) in a tie for eighth at 6-under while professional Craig Czerniejewski (Hartford) and amateur Russell Dettmering (Merrill) tied for 10th at 5-under.Badgers’ Blake Wisdom catches fire in third roundUniversity of Wisconsin alumnus Blake Wisdom fired the round of the tournament during his third round early on Aug. 19. Wisdom, who played a graduate season for the Badgers before turning pro in 2024, shot a 6-under 66 to get into contention late in the morning. He began the day 1-over par through two rounds but by the time he completed a third round that featured eight birdies against two bogeys, he was tied for the lead. But because Wisdom began his third round seven shots behind leader Max Schwarz, the WPGA could not re-pair him with a later tee time for the final 18 holes. So, with a six-hole headstart on the final groups, Wisdom had a chance to set the pace for the final round. He did, too. At least initially. He continued his torrid play with two straight birdies to get to 7-under for the tournament and a share of the lead, but he cooled with two bogeys over his next four holes. He finished with a 1-under 71 for the final round and tied for eighth. This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Kaylor Steger tops Mike Van Sickle in playoff to win Wisconsin State Open

Hong Kong conglomerate seeks $1.5 billion in damages from Panama for takeover of canal ports
Cranes load a cargo ship at Panama Canal's Port of Balboa, managed by CK Hutchison Holdings, in Panama City, on Jan. 30, 2026. (AP Photo/Matias Delacroix, File)2026-08-20T03:48:20Z HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison said Thursday it was seeking more than $1.5 billion in damages from Panama after the country seized two canal ports caught in the crosshairs of U.S.-China tensions.CK Hutchison said in the statement that it had begun new arbitration proceedings against Panama and alleged that the Central American country had breached an investment protection treaty through “sovereign acts that targeted a decades-old ports concession” in a “state attack campaign” on the company’s assets in the Central American country.Panama’s government in February seized the Balboa and Cristobal ports, located on each end of the Panama Canal, after its Supreme Court that a concession held by CK Hutchison’s subsidiary to run the two ports was unconstitutional. The two ports at each end of the Panama Canal became part of U.S.-China tensions since Donald Trump’s return to the White House last year after he alleged China of “running” the canal. The Panama Canal is managed and owned by Panama. But CK Hutchison’s subsidiary Panama Ports Company had run the two ports on the canal from 1997 and had renewed its concession for 25 years in 2021.Beijing and Hong Kong had hit back at Panama over its takeover of the ports. CK Hutchison, controlled by the family of Hong Kong’s richest man Li Ka-shing, last year announced an initial $23 billion deal to sell its global ports business, including the two Panama ports, to a consortium involving U.S. investment firm BlackRock. But the deal had made little progress under geopolitical tensions and legal challenges among China, the U.S. and Panama. In March, Panama Ports Company had separately sought at least $2 billion in compensation from Panama over its takeover of the ports which it said was unlawful under international arbitration proceedings. CK Hutchison said the actions were making progress. Read More CK Hutchison added that Thursday’s new proceedings were focused on its treaty rights, which were distinct from Panama Ports Company’s contract rights in the earlier arbitration proceedings. In April, the subsidiary also launched arbitration proceedings against Danish shipping and logistics group Maersk after it took over some of its port operations in Panama. Maersk said at the time that it did not believe it was liable for the claims. Prince Harry emphasizes need to better apply veterans’ skills during roundtable with service members
Britain's Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, speaks at a roundtable about support for veterans, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)2026-08-20T03:23:03Z WASHINGTON (AP) — Prince Harry urged communities to better apply service members’ skills when they return to the workforce during an intimate gathering with U.S. veterans Wednesday night.“The world needs more heroes,” he told the roundtable. “And it’s not about creating more heroes because they already live among us. It’s about being able to really value their expertise, their experiences.”The Duke of Sussex, who served 10 years in the British Army, hinted that he’d soon launch a “commercial” solution that “really values those who served rather than expect them to volunteer.”He held the discussion with veterans, defense officials, military spouses and nonprofit leaders at a hotel ballroom in Washington, D.C. The conversation — which was organized by The Independence Fund, a nonprofit that helps critically wounded service members — lasted more than 80 minutes. Veterans’ services and mental health have become cornerstones of Harry and his wife Meghan’s philanthropy through their Archewell Foundation. The Duke of Sussex founded the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style international competition for wounded service members, in 2014. His advocacy also includes visits with wounded military personnel, like last year’s stop at a Ukrainian clinic that rehabilitates victims of war.Harry’s British military service included two tours in Afghanistan. He has credited his experience witnessing fellow soldiers’ battlefield injuries with inspiring him to help injured veterans lead healthy lives. In a 2023 Netflix series, he spoke openly about lacking the necessary emotional support upon his return from combat. Harry told the roundtable that it has been refreshing to hear the latest generation of veterans express an interest in “purpose” and “service after service” —- no matter their branch or country of service. He extolled their communication skills, moral leadership and ability to work in high stress environments. Read More But, he said in an interview with The Associated Press, that those skills are “not being transitioned over within the civilian world.” In between jokes about each other’s hair and their alma maters, wounded veterans emphasized the importance of exercise in their rehabilitation. Garrett J. Carnes, a retired marine corporal who lost both legs, said inactivity is difficult when they’ve spent so long priding themselves on their physical fitness. “I give all glory to Jesus Christ,” he said, “but man I am so thankful that he invented Jiu-Jitsu.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Others highlighted the need to improve the quality of veterans’ health centers in smaller towns and bolster mental health services at overworked Veterans Affairs offices.Jason Wheeler, a U.S. Navy and Army veteran, said it’s “not right” that he was unable to get his military benefits to cover a recent surgery. Sitting in a wheelchair, he teared up as he recalled the “humiliating” time he had to crawl off a commercial airplane with his service dog.He was told he would never walk again, he said, but has since walked over 1,000 feet.“I will not stop the fight. I will not quit,” he said. “We don’t have it in us.” Harry’s earlier stops Wednesday included Arlington National Cemetery, where he laid a wreath, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He did not mention reports of his decision to return to the United Kingdom for an extended stay with Meghan and their children. He declined to comment when asked to discuss the move.Sarah Verardo, the CEO of The Independence Fund, noted Harry’s impact on the patients at Walter Reed. A few veterans who told Harry they were too injured to participate in his Invictus Games left their interactions standing “taller and stronger” after he told them there’s “no such thing,” according to Verardo.Jane Horton, a senior defense adviser in the Trump administration and Gold Star wife, appreciated that Harry is using his platform to unite veterans.“To see someone that has turned pain into purpose in such a beautiful way such as Prince Harry — not only turn pain into purpose, but pain into service — resonated with the whole community and means a lot to us all,” she told AP.In an interview with AP, Harry spoke more broadly about the need to elevate “moral leadership.” He expressed concern that a “very, very small group of people are making decisions that are impacting the entire world” around politics and technology. “What we need,” he said, “is the younger generation coming into leadership who perhaps see the world slightly differently. And I think a little less testosterone might do as well.”___Associated Press coverage of philanthropy and nonprofits receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. Lynx star Olivia Miles leaves win over Valkyries early with awkward ankle injury
Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles went down with an awkward ankle injury late on Wednesday night in San Francisco. Miles left the Lynx’s 77-66 win over the Golden State Valkyries in the fourth quarter after she rolled her ankle stepping on Napheesa Collier’s foot by accident. Her status for the final stretch of the season is now unknown as the Lynx prepare for a postseason run while leading the league standings. Miles was trying to defend Valkyries guard Veronica Burton in the lane just past the midway point of the fourth quarter in the contest when she stepped on Collier’s foot. Miles’ left ankle rolled hard, and she started hopping awkwardly toward the baseline instantly, clearly in a lot of pain.Miles eventually went down on the baseline, and was tended to by teammates and the Lynx’s training staff. While she made it to their bench, Miles went back to the locker room minutes later and did not return to the contest. Nooooo Olivia Miles is down, I hope she is OK pic.twitter.com/m85ZZ62mgx— Danielle H. (@DanielleHobeika) August 20, 2026Specifics of the injury are not yet known.Miles had 20 points in the win for the Lynx while shooting 8-of-10 from the field. She had seven assists and five rebounds, too. The former TCU star, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the draft earlier this year, entered Wednesday’s contest averaging 19.9 points and 6.1 assists per game. The Lynx led nearly the entire way at the Chase Center and shot 50% from the field to pick up the 11-point win. They’ve lost just once in their past 16 games, and sit at 30-7 on the season. The Vaklyries fell to 25-10 with the loss, which snapped a seven-game win streak of their own.The Lynx have seven games left in the regular season, including back-to-back games against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever to end the year. While there is just more than a month before the playoffs get going, Miles being out for any real amount of time in the final run of the season would be a significant loss.

‘He’s Going Down’ – Banluelok Promises Fireworks Against Songchainoi At The Inner Circle 27
Banluelok Sitwatcharachai has been waiting for a fight like this, and he has no intention of letting it pass him by.The Thai striking veteran faces former ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Title challenger Songchainoi Kiatsongrit in the atomweight Muay Thai main event of The Inner Circle 27 on Friday, August 21, streaming exclusively for members only via live.onefc.com from Bangkok’s historic Lumpinee Stadium.View this post on InstagramBanluelok arrives at this crucial contest with a 90-22 career record and a 5-1 ONE tally that includes four finishes, the only blemish being a 2025 defeat against future ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Nadaka. Since that setback, he has put together back-to-back victories in 2026, rebuilding momentum at exactly the right time. Standing across from him is a contracted ONE athlete with a 60-21 professional record and a name that carries genuine weight in the atomweight division, despite a recent rough patch. For Banluelok, this is the fight that changes everything. When the matchup was confirmed, Banluelok’s reaction was immediate and unambiguous. The significance of the opportunity was not lost on him for a single moment, and the chance to test himself against one of the division’s most recognizable names hit him with the full force of what it could mean for his career.Banluelok said:“I was hyped when I found out I got Songchainoi. This is the ultimate fight to prove whether I’ve got what it takes to earn a ONE contract.”View this post on InstagramBanluelok has done his homework on Songchainoi. The 25-year-old from Kiatsongrit Muay Thai Gym is built around relentless forward pressure and punching power that has troubled every opponent he has shared the ring with across a 10-3 ONE record. He is durable, aggressive, and dangerous in close quarters. But Banluelok has identified a structural limitation in Songchainoi’s game that he believes gives him a significant edge in this matchup. He said:“Songchainoi is an aggressive brawler, but his only real lethal weapon is his hands. That’s different from other guys I’ve fought who bring a more well-rounded attack.“The only area where he has the upper hand is pure power. But as long as I don’t get caught clean, I’m confident I can absorb his power. As for his durability, yeah, he’s tough as nails, but I trust my power too. If I hit him right on the spot, he’s going down.”View this post on InstagramThe Rachanon affiliate is not simply aiming to win on August 21. He wants to make history in the process. Songchainoi’s durability is the stuff of division legend, a fighter who has absorbed punishment that would have ended most bouts. The prospect of becoming the first man to put him away carries a weight that Banluelok has fully embraced. His target on fight night is precise, and the reward he believes it will bring is equally clear. He said:“My goal is to be the first man to knock Songchainoi out. If I pull that off, I’m confident the ONE contract is mine. Even if it goes to a decision win, I still think I have a great shot — Numsurin [Chor Ketwina] earned his contract by beating him on points, after all.“This is easily one of the biggest fights of my career. I’m going to do whatever it takes to get the win and prove to everyone that I belong on the main ONE roster.”View this post on InstagramTwo Goals, One Night To Achieve Both For BanluelokThe ONE Championship main roster contract is the immediate prize, but Banluelok Sitwatcharachai’s ambitions stretch well beyond August 21.The Thai veteran carries unfinished business with Nadaka from their 2025 encounter, a performance he has never made peace with and one that has fueled every session in the gym since. Claiming a contract by beating Songchainoi would set the stage for the redemption fight he has been chasing.Banluelok said:“Right now, I’ve got two main goals. First is securing that ONE Championship main-roster contract. Second is getting a rematch with Nadaka. I was so disappointed with my performance in our first fight. I completely underperformed and let down everyone who was cheering for me. I want a chance to redeem myself, and I’m 100 percent confident that if we run it back, I’ll bring a completely different performance.”View this post on InstagramShould the contract not materialize immediately after August 21, Banluelok is not without options. The atomweight division is stacked with names who represent genuine tests, and the Thai veteran has already identified the next fighters on his list.He said:“Honestly, I’m confident a win here guarantees a contract because Songchainoi is the absolute top of the division, barring Nadaka. But if it doesn’t happen right away, I’m ready to take on Petnimingkorn [NamkangIceland], Numsurin, or Rifdean [Masdor] next.”View this post on InstagramSource

Judge will consider new trial for Karmelo Anthony in Texas track meet killing
Supporters of Karmelo Anthony chant as they pose for photos outside the Collin County Courthouse after Judge John Roach Jr. was recused from the next phase of Anthony's murder trial, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, in McKinney, Texas. (Elías Valverde II/The Dallas Morning News via AP)2026-08-20T04:02:26Z McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — A judge on Thursday will consider whether to grant Texas teenager Karmelo Anthony a new trial following his murder conviction earlier this summer in the stabbing death of a 17-year-old athlete at a high school track meet.In a legal victory for Anthony, the judge who presided over his trial was removed from the case Wednesday. Judge Michael Chitty was then assigned to consider the motion from Anthony’s attorneys asking for a retrial in killing of Austin Metcalf. Anthony, now 19, was sentenced to 35 years in prison in the case. He attended Wednesday’s hearing wearing a green prison jumpsuit. His parents and Metcalf’s also attending the hearing.Anthony’s attorneys had asked for state District Judge John Roach to be removed in part because of a TV interview in which Roach said jurors “got it right” when they delivered a guilty verdict. In seeking a new trial, Anthony’s attorneys have argued that the June proceedings were marred by strict courtroom rules and improper jury instructions. They have also said Anthony’s decision to not testify came after a dispute with prosecutors over an agreement to focus the trial on the events leading up to the stabbing.Jurors in the trial had rejected Anthony’s claims he acted in self-defense during a confrontation with Metcalf in the stadium bleachers last year. Students who took the stand described a heated exchange over Anthony’s refusal on a rainy spring day to leave a tent that belonged to Metcalf’s team. The case attracted national attention in part because of a flood of social media posts that amplified the killing in racial terms. Anthony is Black; Metcalf was white. Lawyers on both sides, however, told jurors the tragedy had nothing to do with race. Read More During the recusal hearing Wednesday, Anthony’s legal team focused on comments Roach made to a Dallas TV station after the trial had ended. In the interview, which was played as the hearing began, Roach was asked if the jury got “it right.”“Yeah, they did,” Roach said, adding: “Whatever they say, they got it right.” During the interview, Roach also defended his courtroom rules and spoke about the onslaught of online postings about the case. As national attention on the killing intensified last year, the families of both Metcalf and Anthony said they had been targets of harassment.Several schools were competing at the track event when Anthony sat under the Memorial High School tent that was perched in the bleachers. Metcalf and others had repeatedly told Anthony to leave, witnesses testified, leading to an escalating confrontation.Prosecutors said Anthony provoked Metcalf, and witnesses testified that Anthony was the aggressor.Anthony at one point reached inside a bag and replied: “Touch me and see what happens,” according to a police report.Metcalf pushed Anthony, according to witnesses, who said Anthony then pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest. 获取更多RSS:https://feedx.net https://feedx.site

A quiet channel between ICE and Iran shaped deportation flights, newly released emails show
A man waves an Iranian flag during a pro-government gathering at a square in Tehran, Iran, Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026. (AP Photo/Vahid Salemi)2026-08-20T04:02:59Z LOS ANGELES (AP) — U.S. immigration officials worked with Iran to deport Iranians in 2025, newly released emails show, revealing a working relationship between the U.S. and Iranian governments despite tensions mounting between the countries.Hundreds of emails exchanged between U.S. immigration officials, which were obtained by the National Iranian American Council and made public Tuesday, offer the most transparent play by play yet of how the two countries worked together to arrange for more than 100 Iranians to be flown back to Iran on three separate immigration flights in September and December 2025 and January 2026. The emails show that Iranian officials had some influence over which Iranian immigrants in the U.S. were sent back to their home country, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials apparently heeded some last-minute changes to deportation lists at the request of Iran. “Per request from the Iran Embassy I added a few cases,” one unnamed ICE official wrote in late August, a month before the first deportation flight in September. Just over a week later, someone with the same job title moved to make another, unspecified change to the deportation list after they said they met with the “Director at the Iranian Embassy.”“Iran has requested that I amend the previous manifest and expedite the removal process,” the official wrote. In a Sept. 26 email, just three days before the deportation flight left U.S. soil, an ICE official said in an email that the Iranian Embassy was still making requests for three additional Iranians on the flight. It’s not clear who ended up on the flight, which ended up being much smaller than initially planned. Iranian officials were still making requests the day the flight departed, although one official wrote that those requests were denied. Coordination of the flights remained a high priority even as ICE officials acknowledged internally that Iranians were fleeing Iran amid the deadly 12-day war with the U.S. and Israel in June 2025, emails show. The flights departed just months after the U.S. and Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Iran. Read More The new emails highlight a clear departure from a decades-long practice by the U.S. of welcoming Iranian dissidents, exiles and others since the 1979 Islamic Revolution forced a large number of Iranians to flee. The deportation of Iranians to a country whose government has a pattern of violent persecution against women, religious minorities and political dissidents has drawn significant criticism from human rights activists. The Department of Homeland Security did not offer comment in response to an emailed request sent Tuesday afternoon. Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. Email address Sign up By checking this box, you agree to AP's Terms of Use and acknowledge that AP may collect and use your data pursuant to our Privacy Policy. Some deportees were handpicked by Iranian officials, emails showIranian officials acknowledged in September 2025 that as many as 400 Iranians could be returned under an agreement with the Trump administration. They said most of the Iranians had crossed into the U.S. from Mexico illegally, while some faced other immigration issues. It is not clear from the emails how frequently U.S. immigration officials had direct contact with the Iranian government. Sometimes messages were conveyed through Qatari officials, who helped charter the deportation flights through Doha, but other times officials reference regular meetings with the “Iranian delegation,” the “Director at the Iranian Embassy” and other unnamed Iranian officials. It is not clear whether the people Iran put on the list had volunteered to repatriate or if they were forced. Previous reporting from The New York Times revealed that asylum-seekers were among those deported to Iran, while others said they were deported against their will. At least one person was deported who wasn’t supposed to be, emails showed. “An Iranian not included on the final manifest we sent to the Qatari MOI was boarded on the flight,” an unnamed U.S. official wrote. In response, another unnamed U.S. official wrote, “I have no idea how the case/person got through on the plane.” US prioritized deportation efforts during warEmails suggest that pressure to carry out the Iranian deportations came from the highest levels of the Trump administration, even when U.S. and Israel were exchanging strikes with Iran in a 12-day conflict between June 13 and June 24, 2025. Just days after Trump’s June 16 warning on social media that “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” the former acting director of ICE, Todd Lyons, called the repatriation of Iranian immigrants a “priority” in an email sent to the agency’s head of removal operations Marcos Charles and a number of unnamed staff. Shortly after Lyon’s email, Charles forwarded the message to a group of officials whose names are redacted. An unnamed ICE official responded, warning that “removal will prove difficult” amid the ongoing conflict because Iran wasn’t issuing the travel documents for Iranians eligible for deportation. On top of that, the Iranian airspace was closed to all flights during the bombings and Iranians were fleeing the country.Charles was unfazed, telling staff in a subsequent email to make a plan to deport 58 Iranians with final removal orders in ICE custody at the time. “We need a plan forward ASAP,” Charles wrote. Another official, who name was redacted, urged colleagues to “identify a solution for this White House priority.”Jamal Abdi, the president of the National Iranian American Council, said the emails undermine Trump’s assertions that the U.S. is at war with Iran to save ordinary Iranians from a repressive regime.“It demonstrates that the top priority here was to kick out as many people as possible by whatever means necessary,” Abdi said.Iranian officials had access to immigration detaineesOn several occasions, the emails show ICE officials arranging for Iranian officials to meet for unspecified reasons with people detained in the U.S., echoing testimony from Iranian asylum-seekers in an unrelated lawsuit filed by an unaffiliated Iranian interest group in July.Eleven Iranians in immigration detention said they were forced to meet with Iranian government officials while in ICE detention. Those Iranian authorities knew intimate details about their asylum claims, according to the sworn declarations filed in a Washington, D.C., court in July. The lawsuit alleges that U.S. immigration agencies have been illegally sharing confidential information about Iranian asylum-seekers with the Iranian government. The U.S. government is allowed to work with government officials of foreign countries to coordinate deportation logistics. However, federal regulations passed in the late 1990s prohibit the government from sharing information that could reveal that the person getting deported applied for asylum.DHS vehemently disputed the lawsuit’s allegations. “These allegations that ICE shared asylum application records with the Iranian government are FALSE,” DHS said in a statement in July. Champagne growers race to preserve quality in record-early harvest
A grape-picker puts Chardonnay grapes into a crate on a plot of the Gobillard vineyard in Hautvillers, Champagne region, France, Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026. (AP Photo/Aurelien Morissard)2026-08-20T04:05:33Z HAUTVILLERS, France (AP) — Champagne producers are racing to pick their grapes as the region’s earliest harvest on record gets underway, after extreme heat and drought accelerated ripening, leaving growers a narrow window to preserve the quality of the region’s world-famous sparkling wine.On the hillsides of Hautvillers, teams of grape pickers start work at 6:30 a.m. among rows of vines that were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015.For Alexandre Gobillard, production director at the Gobillard & Fils Champagne house, beginning the harvest in mid-August was once almost unthinkable.“It’s historic in Champagne,” he said. “I’ve been working at the estate for 30 years, and when I started, my father used to tell me: ‘On Aug. 15, go on vacation.’ Today, it’s Aug. 18 and we’re in full harvest. We’ve never seen anything like it.”At 50, Gobillard represents the fourth generation to work the family vineyards. Gobillard & Fils grows 40 hectares (about 100 acres) of vines and produces about 1.5 million bottles a year. A changing climate brings an earlier harvestChampagne’s official harvest opened between Aug. 12 and Aug. 17 this year, depending on the area and grape variety — roughly a month earlier than what was once common in the region. A late-March frost hit vines after mild temperatures triggered early budburst, reducing the potential crop. It was followed by four heat waves, which never happened before, Gobillard said. Sun-scorched grapes turned partially brown, something Gobillard said he had rarely seen. He explained that losing roughly 10% of the grapes would mean a loss in volume rather than affect the quality of the wine.Earlier harvests have become increasingly common in Champagne and other French wine regions as temperatures rise. In neighboring Italy, extreme heat has also prompted sparkling-wine producers to harvest sooner and pick grapes at night. Read More David Chatillon, president of the Union of Champagne Houses, acknowledged weather conditions this year will lead to a clear decrease in yields.“But it’s not just because of the drought,” he said. “We lost 43% of the potential production to the spring frosts, and the drought has clearly made the problem of lower yields even worse.”Chatillon said climate change has been a focus of the industry for the past 25 years, prompting investment in research and innovation to adapt to evolving conditions, including developing grape varieties that are more disease-resistant and ripen later. Heat speeds grape ripeningGobillard has seen the shift unfold across generations of his family.“My grandfather’s generation harvested 100 days after flowering, my father’s 90 days, and today we’re down to 80,” he said. “We’re going to have to change our habits.”This summer’s record temperatures compressed the ripening period even further. In June, temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of Champagne.“The vine needs water to live,” Gobillard said. “The water was drawn out of the grapes to keep the vine alive, and as a result we had a much higher concentration of sugar. That’s why it happened so much faster.” Sign up for Morning Wire: Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day. As his daughter operated the wine press, Gobillard watched the year’s first juice flow with a mix of excitement and anxiety. He quickly took a sample to measure its sugar level — a key indicator of potential alcohol content and of whether the grapes have been picked at the right moment. “Champagne shouldn’t be too alcoholic. ... We’re looking for delicacy,” he said. An early harvest tests Champagne’s traditionsThe early harvest also poses logistical challenges in a region where grapes are traditionally picked by hand, with some workers still on summer vacation and others facing transportation delays.Gobillard hopes to complete the harvest at the estate in about nine days, a job requiring around 120 workers recruited mostly from across France and Poland.“It really changes how we look at Champagne’s traditional methods,” said Geoffrey Bonnet-Gobillard, 30, commercial director of the family Champagne house. “Hand harvesting comes with a lot of constraints — housing people, feeding them, recruiting them. It’s very difficult, especially with early harvests in August.” Those pressures could eventually force producers to reconsider some long-established practices as agricultural machinery becomes more sophisticated, he said. The house sells most of its Champagne in European markets, including Britain, Belgium, Italy and Spain, as well as in West Africa, with smaller volumes going to the United States and Asia, Bonnet-Gobillard said. High stakes for a global industryAccording to Comité Champagne’s 2026 industry report, 266.1 million bottles of Champagne were shipped in France and abroad last year, generating 5.7 billion euros ($6.6 billion) in sales. Exports accounted for 56.5% of shipments. Champagne represented about 8% of global sparkling wine consumption by volume but 31% by value. The sector supports around 30,000 direct jobs and requires roughly 100,000 seasonal workers for the harvest, according to Comité Champagne. Despite this year’s difficult conditions, Gobillard said the grapes he inspected were encouraging.“I’m very happy with what I’m seeing,” he said. “We were worried that the drought would leave us with very light bunches, but in these plots we’re really pleased. The quantity should be sufficient and the quality will be there.”But there is little time to spare. “It’s time to cut them. We’re going to have to move quickly,” he said. Russian missile barrage kills at least 6 in Kyiv, injures 33
A policeman stands next to the bodies of two people killed during an overnight Russian attack in Kyiv, Ukraine, Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026. (AP Photo/Francisco Seco)2026-08-20T04:38:32Z KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian missile barrage overnight Thursday killed at least six people in Kyiv as explosions echoed across the capital throughout the night, local authorities said.At least 33 people were wounded in the attack, according to Ukraine’s Emergency Service. The air raid alert remained active into the early morning hours Thursday. The strikes hit 12 locations across Kyiv’s Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts, damaging residential buildings, a medical facility and an educational institution. Emergency crews pulled people trapped under the rubble. Russia has intensified ballistic missile attacks on the capital to constrain Kyiv’s air defense stocks. Kyiv has limited systems capable of intercepting ballistic threats, while supplies of missiles for its U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems remain chronically constrained. U.S. President Donald Trump had authorized Ukraine to obtain licenses to produce Patriot air-defense systems, but later reversed that decision.Ukraine, meanwhile, has intensified its own campaign of long-range strikes against weapons depots, military facilities and other strategic targets deep inside Russian territory, seeking to degrade Moscow’s ability to sustain its attacks on Ukrainian cities. In Solomianskyi district, the top two floors of a 9-story residential building were destroyed and fires broke out on other floors. People were also trapped in two residential buildings and a school shelter.

Mariners try again, succeed in 7-5 win over Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Dustin May (21) watches an RBI single by Seattle Mariners left fielder Taylor Ward during the first inning of their game Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. | USA TODAY Network via Reuters Co Ah, the difference only 24 hours can make. On Tuesday, the Mariners wore one of the most lopsided losses in the history of baseball. With a 22-0 scoreline, it’s safe to say they had a bad day. Setting aside the context of one of the franchise’s most disappointing seasons to date (at least to this point), it happens to the best of us.Despite briefly becoming the laughingstock of the sports world, the 26 players making up the active roster of the Seattle Mariners had no choice Wednesday morning but to wake up, roll out of bed, and try again. All they could do was move forward.Move forward, they did. The Mariners rode an early lead to a 7-5 victory over the best team in baseball Wednesday night in Milwaukee. As if fueled by the embarrassment of the night prior — and perhaps a bit of BABIP luck — the Mariners offense left no time to ruminate any longer, jumping on Dustin May right off the bat. Back-to-back singles by Brendan Donovan and Randy Arozarena set the table for Dominic Canzone, who lined an RBI double into the left-center gap to give Seattle a 2-0 lead before May could even record an out.View LinkMay was able to finally retire a couple of Mariners to secure the first two outs of the inning, but he’d walk both Cole Young and Cal Raleigh to load the bases and extend the inning. These walks would haunt, much to the Brewers starter’s dis-May; Taylor Ward dumped a single into shallow right to bring across two more runs, giving the Mariners a 4-0 lead after only a half-inning.View LinkMuch like the Brewers the night before when facing Leo Rivas, the Mariners had no intention of stopping there. After Milwaukee was held scoreless in the bottom of the first, Donovan led off the second inning the same way he did the first, with an infield single — he’d reach base four times over the course of the evening. Randy Arozarena took a pitch off the forearm and Canzone blooped a single into left field to load the bases again with nobody out. Julio Rodríguez would advance the runners and tack on another run by driving a sacrifice fly to deep center field, making the score 5-0.One pitch later, Josh Naylor snuck a single down the right field line to score two more.View LinkYoung and Raleigh were put away to retire the side, but the Mariners were able to chase May, holding a whopping 7-0 lead midway through the second. The comfortable lead was plenty of room for Logan Gilbert to get to work. He didn’t have his best stuff on Wednesday and had some trouble putting away hitters in a fashion somewhat reminiscent of his struggles early in the season. He allowed leadoff walks in both of the first two innings and paid for it the second time, with Joey Ortiz following it up with a line-drive homer over the wall in left to cut the Mariners lead to 7-2. Like I said though, Gilbert had a similar look to earlier in the year. Usually, the damage done off of him isn’t the problem as much as a lack of efficiency. This was the case tonight — he’d begin the sixth inning but was unable to record an out, his night coming to an end after five-plus and 100 pitches. Eduard Bazardo entered the sixth in relief, facing the first of a couple of dicey situations the bullpen would encounter as the Brewers refused to go away quietly. Ortiz lined a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded to narrow the lead to 7-3, but Bazardo was able to strikeout a couple in the frame to prevent an unraveling.View LinkBy this point, the Mariners bats had quieted down. DL Hall pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the Brewers, buying some time for his team to mount a rally. The Brew Crew threatened again in the seventh against José Ferrer, but came up empty from an opportunity with two outs and two runners in scoring position. It was in the bottom of the eighth where the Mariners’ lead briefly looked to be in danger. Seranthony Domínguez allowed a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles to cut the deficit down another run and bring the tying run to the plate. He hunkered down though, earning a ground-ball double play by Cooper Pratt that narrowed the score to 7-5 but left the bases empty. Gabe Speier came on and worked a groundout to end the inning.Andrés Muñoz slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth, setting the 2-3-4 of the Brewers lineup down in order to earn his 100th save of his Mariners career.View LinkIt may sound cliché, but Wednesday night’s Mariners victory was emblematic of both baseball and life. One day, life gives you everything you can handle and it gets the best of you. The next, well, maybe you kick the best team in baseball in the teeth before they even know what hit them.Tuesday was ugly. Wednesday, the series is tied. Rubber game Thursday.

Cubs BCB After Dark: Would you re-sign Clay Holmes?
May 15, 2026; New York City, New York, USA; New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes (35) delivers a pitch during the third inning against the New York Yankees at Citi Field. Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect It’s Wednesday evening here at BCB After Dark: the coolest club for night owls, early risers, new parents and Cubs fans abroad. Please come in and sit with us for a while. There’s no cover charge. We validate parking. There are still a few tables available. The hostess will seat you now. Bring your own beverage.BCB After Dark is the place for you to talk baseball, music, movies, or anything else you need to get off your chest, as long as it is within the rules of the site. The late-nighters are encouraged to get the party started, but everyone else is invited to join in as you wake up the next morning and into the afternoon.Last night I asked you if you thought Pete Crow-Armstrong would reach the rarified “40-40” mark this year. You all were quite optimistic, as 63 percent of you thought he’ll get there. Here’s the part where we listen to music and talk movies. You’re free to skip ahead if you want. Or you’re free to join us.Tonight we’re featuring guitarist Julian Lage with the SFJAZZ ensemble in 2025. John Medeski is on organ, Jorge Roeder is the bassist and the drummer is Kenny Wollesen. This is a nice bit of funky fusion for those of you who like that. This is “Speak to Me.”Sorry I don’t have a movie to talk about tonight, so I’m going to throw the floor open to you. I wrote about The Roaring Twenties on Monday night, so tonight I thought I’d just ask you for your favorite gangster films. In particular, I’m curious as to whether you think one of the first two Godfather films is the greatest gangster movie of all-time (and which one) or whether you lean towards Goodfellas. Or maybe one of you will put in a bid for Infernal Affairs or its US remake, The Departed. (I don’t remember who did it, but a while ago one of you suggested that I watch Infernal Affairs and to whomever made that recommendation, thank you.) There are a lot of other great gangster films, both classic and more modern. There are those who argue that Bonnie and Clyde is among the most important American films ever made, as it heralded the end of the old studio system and the Production Code and ushered in the New Hollywood Era of the late-sixties and seventies. That’s an era that many think is the golden era of American filmmaking. I haven’t seen Miller’s Crossing in a long time, but I remember it being very good. I don’t think Casino is as good as Goodfellas, but it is pretty darn good. There are both versions of Scarface, although I think the Pacino version is too over-the-top. I guess that’s part of the appeal. Going back to the 1930s, The Public Enemy and Little Caesar are stone-cold classics. There’s The Untouchables, which I haven’t seen in a while but which gives up the phrase “That’s the Chicago way!” There’s also that scene that’s an homage/rip-off of Battleship Potemkin. Bugsy Malone has a certain insane charm that has never been recreated and never will be. If you’re familiar with the film, you know what I’m talking about. So what great gangster films am I missing?Welcome back to all of you who skip the music and movies. The Cubs gave up a heck of a lot to get right-hander Clay Holmes for the final two months of the season and the playoffs. Infielder Jefferson Rojas was one of the Cubs top two prospects and he certainly has the potential to be an everyday regular and maybe even an All-Star. But after a poor first start with the Cubs (and we can forgive that since it was his first start in three months after an broken leg), he’s been nails in his two most recent starts. Even before the Cubs made the deal for Holmes, there was a lot of talk about how Holmes was perfect for the Cubs. As an extreme ground ball pitcher, few pitchers are as well suited for the Cubs elite infield defense as Holmes. Over Holmes last two starts, he’s thrown 12 innings and has allowed just one run.So the question is, should the Cubs make a long-term commitment to Clay Holmes? He’s a free agent at the end of the year. Right now, none of the current Cubs starters are under contract for next year. The Cubs rotation in 2027, if they don’t sign anyone else, is:Edward CabreraBen Brown Javier AssadJustin Steele (if healthy)Cade Horton (if healthy)Jordan Wicks (??)Braxton Garrett (??)So clearly the Cubs are going to have to sign some starters this winter. Should Clay Holmes be one of them?In this article, written when Holmes was still a Met, estimated that Holmes would sign a deal for three years and between $60 and $75 million. (The Athletic sub. req.) Of course, the uncertainty of the upcoming lockout and the collective bargaining talks complicates things. But would you make that commitment to Holmes?Holmes turns 34 in the offseason. That means that any three-year deal with Holmes would take him through his age-36 season. If you’re worried about age-related decline, you might not want to re-sign Holmes. But Holmes has been remarkably healthy throughout his career. Yes, he just missed three months, but that was the biggest injury of his career and it came on a comebacker that broke his fibula. That’s a freak injury and not the sign of someone who is injury prone. His other trips to the injured list in his career have been short, with the longest one coming in 2022 for back spasms. He missed three weeks that time.So let’s say Holmes would sign a three-year, $70 million extension. If you were Jed Hoyer and Carter Hawkins, would you make that offer? Would you offer more? I apologize for the crappy way this question is posted. This feed polling system doesn’t allow for many characters and options. I hope you know what I’m asking. If not, ask for clarification in the comments.By the way, I also apologize for using a photo of Holmes in a Mets uniform. But I have a policy of only using photos taken at night for After Dark for thematic reasons and Holmes hasn’t pitched a night game for the Cubs yet!Thank you for stopping by, both tonight and all week. I hope we’ve made your evenings a little brighter. Please get home safely. Stay cool and dry out there. Recycle any cans and bottles. Tip your waitstaff. And join us again next week for more BCB After Dark.
